No trip to a destination is complete without diving into the local food scene. At La Union, which is surrounded by water, seafood abounds. There is, however, one restaurant to rule them all.
SEAFOOD RESTAURANT
Riverfarm is a seafood restaurant located at km 282 Baroro Bacnotan, La Union, and is an agritourism destination. The quaint restaurant, as told by owner Cesar Ocampo, started with his father’s Golden Tilapia fish farm. He then built a hut to where he could go to rest, which then developed into a small restaurant. Fourteen years later, it now sits on a huge expanse of land next to the Baroro river. Ocampo shares that they also plan to open a bed and breakfast soon facing the river. The main part of the restaurant has an open, native design allowing the fresh breeze to blow across the dining area. River Farm’s dining hall also extends to the river, with floating cabanas and a river cruise experience to make dining extra special, for a small additional fee. The restaurant serves fresh seafood, majority of which is harvested from the restaurant’s own seafood farm on the daily. Riverfarm prides itself with its home-grown Golden Tilapia, raised in
suspended nets. This farming method results in a fresh, clean taste and impeccably white flesh, with great texture. If you’re looking to visit La Union, you must try Riverfarm’s specialties: Steamed Golden Tilapia, a steamed tilapia smothered in a rich sauce; Boatman’s Delight, a boodle fight-like setup with different grilled and steamed seafood; Riverfarm’s Hot Pot, mixed seafood sinigang which boasts an
all-Ilocano blend; and Pako-Pipino Salad, which is a fresh, healthy mix with refreshing flavors. Riverfarm is everything you’d hope a countryside dining experience to be: relaxed, close to nature, and filled with mouthwatering delights.
It doesn’t matter how much you eat before you leave for a roadtrip, hunger always catches up. For long journeys on the road, Goldilocks Bakeshop has a wide range of treats to satiate your cravings. From classics like polvoron, mamon, and ensaymada, to ready-to-eat Filipino favorites such as dinuguan and paksiw na baboy, the bakeshop chain offers convenient, filling food choices to keep you full on your journey.

In the heart of San Fernando, in the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it street of Zandueta is Halo-Halo de Iloko, loved by both locals and tourists for its delicious and, as the name suggests, uniquely Ilocano version of our de facto national frozen dessert.
The restaurant is open from 9 am to 9 pm every day, but is open until 12 midnight during the Holy Week. For more information visit: facebook.com/ magpasarapkamuna
and sinampalukang buknok (buko and manok). Every item on offer is a celebration of local produce and thoughtful preparation, none exemplifies this ethos more than the halo-halo. As much as possible, each ingredient is taken from a town in La Union, where agri-tourism is being pushed by the local government. The restaurant offers different variations of their halo-halo including regular, fiesta, buko, fried and ginataan. This also includes a seasonal special ingredient like pastillas (December to January), and avocado during the rainy season. Mercado has been featured in Madrid Fusion and the World Streetfood Congress for his efforts in local cuisine. He showcased his creation: the Okoy Tikyosko, a variation of the popular deep fried shrimp snack. It’s made with mung bean sprouts, shrimp, squash and other ingredients, fried in a skillet. It looks more like a Spanish omelette than a traditional okoy.
The restaurant is run by owner and head chef Xavier Mercado, who personally does the prep work for all of the establishment’s menu items. He tries to keep his recipes a secret from everyone except his wife, who also helps out in the kitchen. Halo-Halo de Iloko started out in 2004 as a hole-inthe-wall a couple of blocks from its current location. It served just Mercado’s version of halo-halo. He was forced to relocate the restaurant to his ancestral home because of the sudden influx of people. “They keep on coming back even the balikbayan, they come back with even more people every two or three years,” he remarked. The singular menu has expanded over time as well, serving up Ilocano favorites and new concoctions such as dinengdeng, Ilocano burger, 56
APRIL 2018
Mercado explained that he and his family has always had a strong appreciation for food: “We love to eat. We love to travel. We love to explore. And I love to experiment.” Halo-Halo de Iloko will be moving to a bigger establishment at the end of the year behind the CSI Mall still in San Fernando. It will be a village of bamboo houses and a Spanish colonial-inspired building.
When’s the worst time to crave for pizza fresh out of the oven? When travelling to far-flung provinces, that’s when. That’s not a problem in La Union, though. The first Greenwich Pizza branch in all of La Union stands at the corner of P. Burgos street in the city of San Fernando. It’s done in a cool industrial style, drawing customers to come in for both food, and a great time with friends. The interior is very modern, with different seat and table styles for customers to enjoy. And since it’s Greenwich, you can be sure your food is served hot and fresh. Favorites like the Overload Pizza, lasagna, and chicken plates are available, along with the rest of the restaurant’s long-time favorites. You can even have them deliver the pizza to you, should you feel like staying in. Planning a Summer getaway in La Union? Make sure to drop by Greenwich, San Fernando La Union with your barkada.

All the way from the suburban streets of Mexico City, Olas Banditos has brought flavorful Mexican cuisine in the coastal town of San Juan, La Union. Coming from two Spanish words that literally mean “Wave Warrior,” the Mexican joint officially opened its doors in September 2016. It offers food choices to satisfy the discriminating palates of both locals and tourists in the area. The brainchild of Mike Oida and Luke Landringan, this restaurant offers homemade Mexican dishes that will tickle everyone’s taste buds. Strategically located along the surf strip of San Juan, this restaurant is the most eye-catching establishment you’ll see. A colorful skull with a surfboard in its background, together with its name, is emblazoned on the entrance. Meanwhile, their vibrant and large menu installed as a mural welcomes visitors. Its interiors are a mixture of contemporary, dynamic, and vibrant Mexican patterns, which perfectly complements their cuisine.
Flauta, a homemade tortilla drizzled with cheese and special sauce; Karne Asada Quesadilla; California Burrito with french fries, beef, and tomatoes mixed in a special sauce, the Beef Burrito; Homemade Churros with Caramel and Chocolate Sauce; and their famous Horchata—rice milk drink topped with cinnamon. If you happen to be around when it’s available, their Shrimp Burrito is also a must-try. Booze is also one of their special offerings to guests, specifically pitcher cocktails like the Margarita.
The store is open from 11 AM to 11 PM, Mondays to Thursdays, and up to 1 AM during weekends. Be sure to visit this unique restaurant if you ever find yourself in San Juan!
With its mouth-watering Mexican delicacies, customers keep coming back for more. From burritos to quesadillas and churros—they’ve got it all! Among their best-sellers are the Chicken
Summer is a great time to get to get away from the stresses of the city and cool off at the beach. The scorching heat, however, can be a little too much for the weary traveler. Have a tall glass of RC Cola to quench your thirst and cool you off, with its citrusy, carbonated goodness. Grab a glass while you chill by beach or gulp one down to cap off a long day on the road.

I like big cars, but I’ve avoided driving pick-ups and large vans, considering them too difficult to maneuver, too heavy for long drives, and just too workman-like for me. Driving the Ford Ranger 2.2 Wildtrak 4x2 AT was a liberating experience, as I loved how the truck’s exterior brawn was perfectly complemented by its interior refinement. First, let’s talk about the brawn. The Ford Ranger’s tag line is “Built Tough” and, indeed, this is embodied in its aggressively muscular design, heightened by the Wildtrak accent grille. It rides high on 18-inch alloy wheels, and with a ground clearance of 237 mm and a wading depth of 800 mm, this is a ride that’s not easily intimidated by whatever challenges it meets on the road, whether it’s other trucks and buses, rough terrain, or even some river crossing. The 2.2-liter TDCi turbo diesel engine is capable of producing 160 PS of power and 385 Nm of torque. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and with an electronic power-assisted steering for effortless maneuverability, it’s very tempting to just ignore the speed limit and let the Ranger run free on the expressway. Luckily, an adjustable speed limiter can be preset to ensure you don’t run afoul of the highway cops. Front double wishbone and rear leaf spring suspensions make for a comfortable ride, while front disc and rear drum brakes ensure sufficient stopping power when needed. You literally need to step up into the driver’s seat of the Ranger which, on the 2.2 Wildtrak variant, is a plush two-tone black leather with brown

Wildtrak accents. Once positioned behind the wheel, you’re transported into a truck built for geeks, starting off with 12V sockets for both front and rear as well as two USB ports—more than enough outlets to power your mobile devices while on the move. Vehicle information, multimedia entertainment, and navigation are all accessible via the 8-inch touchscreen display and the dual TFT instrument cluster. Ford’s SYNC technology lets you use your phone for calls, play music, and access your apps. The 6-speaker audio system delivers superior sound quality, with excellent stereo separation. In addition to in-cabin creature comforts, the Ford Ranger is also packed with the usual alphabet soup of safety features including front driver and passenger as well as side and curtain airbags, 3-point ELR seatbelts, and ISOFIX child seat anchors, among others. For me, though, the most notable is its electronic stability program with hill start assist and trailer sway control. On the Ford Ranger 2.2 Wildtrak 4x2 AT, driving over 230 kilometers to San Fernando, La Union, with only brief pit stops on the way was unexpectedly fun and exhilarating.

Preparing a road trip for a baker’s dozen meant that we needed to transport not just a lot of people, but also a lot of gear. Fortunately, our friends from Ssangyong sent over a Rodius 2.0L 5AT EX to help us with our logistical concerns. Although the official product brochure bills the Rodius as a “dynamic SUV,” it’s more commonly classified as a van or MPV due to its low profile and 9-seat configuration. While its front and rear bear a family resemblance to its siblngs, the Tivoli and Korando, the overall impression is reminiscent of a more sedate station wagon or mom-mobile. Powered by a 2.0-liter common rail turbo diesel engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, the Rodius produces 155 hp at 4,000 rpm and 360 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm from a rear-wheel drive system. The e-tronic automatic transmission is based on Mercedes-Benz technology, thanks to Ssangyong’s previous collaboration with the German auto-maker. Built-in artificial intelligence learns the driver’s shifting habits and uses the information for more precise gear changes. Road bumps are cushioned by front double wishbones and rear independent multilink suspensions. Brakes are ventilated discs all around. The best seats in the Rodius were the second and third row captain seats which can be reclined, have adjustable armrests, and can slide forward and back. The fourth row is a padded bench seat which can be folded down for additional cargo room. In front of each second row seat is a foldable table attached to the back of the front seats. These premium seats are convenient for easy entry and egress, and also have access to a charging socket and USB port. To combat the summer heat, the Ssangyong Rodius 2.0L 5AT EX has an automatic single zone climate control system with 9 vents to help keep the cabin cool all over. The audio system consists of a 7-inch touchscreen LCD head unit with 6 speakers. Standard safety features include seatbelts, driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability program, remote keyless entry, and rear parking sensor. It must be noted that the Ssangyong Rodius topped the 2017 DOE Fuel Economy Run, logging in 33.12 km/L.

The 4x2 carries a 3-liter, four-cylinder, inline, Euro 4-compliant, Blue Power diesel engine with Turbo Intercooler that pushes a maximum of 177 PS at 3,600 rpm and has a torque of 380 Nm at 1,800 to 2,800 rpm. This translates to plenty of vroom whenever you need it. Stopping the vehicle are ventilated discs on both axles, while suspension is a combination of an independent double wishbone with coil spring and stabilizer for the front while the rear is supported by a five-link coil spring and stabilizer bar. Like its predecessors, the 2018 mu-X looks just as imposing and assertive as its specs, boasting of clean, bold lines with strong chrome and gray accents across the front and sides of the vehicle. But for any roadtrip, how it looks and feels on the inside is what matters most. The LS-A AT variant assures both driver and passengers a comfortable ride with spacious rows, nicely moulded seats (with electronic adjustment for the driver), and plenty of compartments for personal effects. Other creature comforts include an 8-inch entertainment console with navigation, a 10-inch, roof-mounted screen with DVD playback (oh, yes), and plenty of charging ports for both the front and back rows. With more than plenty of power and a lot of personal touches for comfort, the new mu-X is the noble steed to take with you on your next adventure.

GAMING
Words by Jose Alvarez Developer: Outpost Games, Inc. | Publisher: Outpost Games, Inc | Platform(s): PC
Many of our older readers may be familiar with the TV show Survivor, which has been set in multiple locations around the world (including the Philippines). The idea of a survival-based game has been touted around for years, but did not fully come into fruition until the advent of consistent online multiplayer games. One of the first co-operative survival games was Dead by Daylight, which involved four survivors working together to escape from a killer. However, SOS: The Ultimate Escape (or just simply SOS) involves people working with (and against) each other for survival.

The Studio Bake Bread Gallery is a family venture of the Escuderos, who saw it fit to open up their first shop in their neighborhood. “My family has been in the food service business for over 20 years, but we were always exposed to just the hot kitchen; and so we wanted to try something new because we know how competitive the market for bread is nowadays and also how perceptive Filipinos are of bread,” said Studio Bake communications manager Bea Escudero.
Studio Bake opens in Alabang Words by Robby Vaflor Photos by Theresa Eloriaga
Southies now have a new place to get their bread fix as Studio Bake formally opened its doors at the Festival Mall Extension in Alabang, Muntinlupa last March 15, 2018.
The boulangerie’s recipes have been curated from the family’s industry experience as well as favorites from their own home. Studio Bake offers three main bread types, specifically: sweet dough–like chocolate twists and sticky cinnamon rolls; laminated dough–like croissants and Danish pastries; and artisanal–like boules and baguettes. Studio Bake assures its customers that each batch is freshly made everyday with quality ingredients, but tagged at a very reasonable price. “All the products we give out come straight from the oven. It’s all fresh, and we make sure that we use top quality ingredients: real butter, for example [...] We wanted to give people a reasonable price, but at the same time give them good quality products,” added Escudero. Hakata Ikkousha RAMEN PROFESSIONAL Words by Robby Vaflor Photos by Theresa Eloriaga
It was a sleepy Thursday noon at the annex of Festival Mall in Filinvest City, Alabang, Muntinlupa. Most shops in this area won’t be expecting much foot traffic until offices and schools release their occupants a few hours from then. Except for one, which was getting quite a few visitors: Hakata Ikkousha.

Ikkousha originated from Hakata-ku, a ward in the city of Fukuoka in Japan which is home of the Hakata-style tonkotsu or “pork bones” ramen. The restaurant was founded by Kousuke Yoshimura in pursuit for the finest, most authentic bowl of tonkotsu ramen. Marivic Tomoda, CEO of Ikkousha Manila learned from her stay in Japan that Ikkousha really offers the best ramen, a discovery which she and her husband intends to share with the Filipino people: “My husband is from the city of Fukuoka in Hakata and I stayed there for 20 years already. And since I’m from Manila, he thought we should bring Ikkousha here.” Unlike most ramen places in the Philippines with the lengthy menus and modern spins on the beloved noodle dish, Ikkousha is a no-nonsense restaurant that takes pride in the quality of its ingredients and preparation. “Lately there have been a lot of ramen places that popped up here in Manila. The difference is the authenticity of [our] ramen. All the ingredients, the Hakata way, we made sure we kept,” said Tomoda. The menu is straightforward with three main tonkotsu ramen types: the original tonkotsu, the spicy god fire, and the tonkotsu black. That and a few side dishes and additional toppings. When simple is done well, it transcends “delicious” and onto the realm of the sublime. And Ikkousha has that down pat. Everything down to the most basic ingredients like soy sauce are sourced from Japan, staying true to the recipe. Save for the pork which they get fresh from a local partner grower. The water is made sure to reach a certain level of softness (fewer mineral content) for optimal boiling. The pork bones are simmered for 48 hours to achieve the creamy, milky, umami-rich broth that bubbles at the top. The noodles are suggested to be served firm or al dente, and the bowl is topped with fall apart-tender chashu, subtly seasoned ajitama egg, spring onions and kikurage mushrooms. Simple and perfect. Bayad Center Mobile App: A Game Changer in Bills Payment Adapting to the various paying habits of its customers and to the growing technology, Bayad Center expands its horizons by releasing its own app for mobile devices. The app enables you to pay your bills anytime, anywhere in just one tap. It has several features like Bill Reminder that notifies its users the due dates of their bill, helping users manage their finances. Meanwhile, the Branch Locator function aids customers in finding the nearest Bayad Center within their area. Both options are available even when you’re offline, which makes it perfect for those without a regular Internet connection on their phones. With its Bill Payment button, customers may accomplish their transaction in real time through their credit or debit card, as well as with their Pay Pal account. Future updates to the app will add remittance services, prepaid phone loading, and instaSurance selling. Users may also use the Bills Payment Management where they can view the history of their payments across different channels, and Crowd Sourcing Tools which provide information
that will help others identify branches with lesser queues near their location. “Everyone wants everything to be simple. The BC Mobile is just that. It puts together in one app all your payment needs, no bells and whistles- it sends you a reminder for your due dates, it shows you the nearest BC location
and authorized partners and it allows you to pay your bills on the fly. No need to enroll in different online payment sites, because BC Mobile carries under its umbrella the string of billing partners, and the seal of service and reliability that Bayad Center offers,” says CIS Bayad Center Inc. marketing head Wendell Kristian Labre.
Schneider Electric Launches Smart Panel, Compact NSXm, and PowerTag Schneider Electric recently unveiled its newest innovations aimed at helping make energy consumption efficient and sustainable across homes and industries. The Smart Panel, Compact NSXm, and PowerTag are Schneider Electric’s foray into the IoT ecosystem. These new products present a shift in electric panel board design: from traditional to smart, and from technical to more user-friendly. Smart Panels These digitized electrical panelboards, which has a simple plug-and-play architecture, help users measure energy consumption through embedded and stand-alone metering and control capabilities. These Smart Panels are able to pinpoint overloads and inefficiencies proactively, enabling users to make smart and informed decisions. Smart Panels communicate directly in real time by sending data to a computer or a smart device, making it easy to track a building’s electrical system status and increase operational efficiency, energy expense optimization, reliability and safety. All these are made possible through an advanced hardware working tandem with an innovative software. Compact NSXm Compact NSXm is Schneider Electric’s newest brand of molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) that follows its 60-year line of circuit breakers. With a clean compact design built to provide 92

maximum convenience, Compact NSXm saves up to 40-percent in installation time with visible external auxiliaries that lessen installation error. Its roto-active braking system prevents short circuits during the interruption process. It also has Everlink patented connections that prevents heating failures and guarantees long-lasting secure connections. It also has integrated earth leakage protection to prevent shock and a Green Premium ecolabel. PowerTag For those with existing panel boards and would like an upgrade, Schneider Electric’s PowerTag is the solution. This small power tag has wireless sensors which accurately monitor energy consumption in real time for small buildings to large facilities. PowerTag users are able to manage their energy consumption more
efficiently and economically on all electrical loads, from IT and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) to machines, pumps and process equipment as well as pinpoint specific problem areas. PowerTag sensors are compact and easy to install on existing or new panel boards. Devices connected to these smart products can be controlled and monitored remotely via Schneider Electric’s dedicated web app accessed through an IP address. This gives users total control over their energy consumption along with acquiring significant data to prevent complications and ultimately bring up savings. Though the smart products collect and analyze data, no sensitive information is taken apart from usage habits. This ensures the safety of your data along with your connected devices. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
ePLDT VITRO Makati Receives PCI Data Security Standard Version 3.2 Certification guidelines on physical space, data storage, and security profiles. As the largest data center facility in the country to date, VITRO Makati has a maximum capacity of 3,584 racks sitting on a nearly two-hectare property. It is the first data center to be awarded with the ANSI/TIA-942 Rated 3 Design Certificate, which emphasizes the redundancy design of the data centers to ensure the highest availability during unplanned maintenance and infrastructure expansion. ePLDT, the industry-leading enabler of digital enterprise solutions in the Philippines, announced that its premiere VITRO Data Center in Makati City recently received the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) Version 3.2 certification, an international accreditation given to merchants and service providers who passed the security standards set by the PCI Security Standards Council in protecting cardholder data.
Compliance with the PCI-DSS alleviates the vulnerabilities that come with the whole cardprocessing ecosystem which includes point-ofsale devices, wireless hotspots, transmission of cardholder data to service providers, personal computers or servers, and systems operated by service providers and acquirers that maintain relationships with merchants that accept payment cards.
PCI-DSS, the global data security standard created by a consortium of international credit card companies, applies to all entities that store, process, and/or transmit cardholder data, covering technical and operational system components included in or connected to sensitive cardholder information.
VITRO Makati is the second ePLDT data center to receive the PCI-DSS version 3.2 certification. Last year, VITRO Pasig was certified for version 3.1 and was recently upgraded to 3.2. The two data centers were assessed and certified based on the international standard’s established
Furthermore, VITRO Makati is recognized by NTT Communications as Nexcenter-compliant for adopting its data center design practices and management experience. This allows clients to experience the same international standards applied on all 140 Nexcenter facilities in 84 cities of 19 countries. VITRO Makati is operated and maintained by professionals who are guided by ISO standards such as Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2008), Business Continuity Management System (ISO 22301:2013), Information Security Management System (27001:2013), IT Services Management System (20000-1:2011), and Environmental Management System (14001:2004).
