VOLUME 209I s s ue sa ndCount i ng !
Almost two decades ago, the first issue of Gadgets Magazine came out. For the record, I had absolutely nothing to do with it at the time, trying to get through highschool was all I was trying to accomplish. Back then, devices were much bulkier, significantly simpler, and every bit as interesting as they are now. Technology and getting information about it to our readers has always been at the heart of this endeavor, and we count ourselves truly fortunate to still be doing that today. We have endured the ups and downs of the industry, the advent of new media, and everything else this exciting segment has brought, and we will continue do so with even greater passion and dedication than we did 19 years ago. Thank you for being with us on this journey, and we promise to keep this going for many, many more years to come. Ren Alcantara Editor-at-Large

PH 3 Wireless Headphones Reviewed by Gabriel Pe
A good pair of headphones is never a bad investment. But with so many features and specs, it’s difficult to decide which one is right for you. When H-Audio launched the PH3 last June, the catchy design and the active noise cancellation immediately piqued our interest. DESIGN First of all, let’s get one thing out of the way: the design is not for everyone. I personally appreciate the minimalist look. It’s simple, and straight to the point with its patriotic message—kinda like the national flag-colored shirts or the Ninoy glasses that popped up a few years back. For those who don’t like being seen with the design or think that the flag motif is a little over the top, it’s barely visible from afar. H-Audio has also fitted the PH3 for comfort thanks to memory foam pads covered in soft faux leather. The main problem, however, is the color. I really like things done in white, but the texture of the material covering the outside of the headphones is a dirt magnet.
HARDWARE The PH3 is an Over-Ear Hi-Fi stereo headphone with active noise cancellation capable of deadening 15-20 dB of volume between 50-500 Hz. The headphones are also equipped with Bluetooth 4.1 for wireless connectivity. The simple design of the outside also translates to the port and buttons. The right earcup has the volume and power buttons, as well as the micro USB port for charging, the auxiliary audio port, and the power indicator. The left ear has the active noise cancellation switch as well as its accompanying indicator.
USER EXPERIENCE Right off the bat, I’ll tell you that the only way to enjoy this headphone is with the active noise cancellation turned on. Without active noise cancellation, the device sounds like an echo chamber. Once the active noise is turned
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
on, the audio quality improves significantly, delivering clear audio and a nice bass hit. The PH3 is versatile and great for both casual listening and gaming. I have used the device all the way from listening to tracks at the office, transcribing interviews, and some late-night CS:GO. Thanks to the active noise cancellation, I was able to do all of that without interruption or distraction, especially while working at home. Moving on from the sound, using the PH3 was bliss. Battery life was amazing, exceeding 10 hours on Bluetooth and with active noise turned on. The memory foam earpads were also really pleasant to use. Throughout the day, I found no need to take the headphones off except when the battery finally decided to give up. Charging time was also decent, delivering 10 hours of use from a three-hour top-up. One large problem I had with the PH3 was portability. The lack of hinges to fold the cups back made it bulky when placed in a bag. Using the included auxiliary cord is also a hassle. The telephone-cord-style cord restricted movement and had a tendency to fight back when stretched. H-Audio could have done justice to the design of the cord if they had extended it by an inch or two. The only instance when the aux cord was useful was when I was using my phone a few meters from my head, but putting it in my pocket was not comfortable, and this is coming from a guy who stands all of five feet.
SPECIFICATIONS: • HiFi Stereo • Wireless range of 20m • Active Noise Cancellation up to 15-20dB and between 50-500Hz • Bluetooth 4.1 • Sensitivity 119+3dB • Impedance: 32 ohms +/- 10% • Auxiliary port 3.5mm • MicroUSB port What’s Hot: • Good sound and solid bass • Great design • Active noise cancelling • Great battery life • Clarity • Comfortable to wear What’s Not: • Portability • Dust magnet • Short auxiliary cord • Sounds echo without active noise cancellation on
VALUE Coming at PHP 7,480 the PH3 is a great mid-priced pair of active noise-canceling headphones. The cherry on top is that each purchase contributes toward H-Audio’s sound healing program which helps the underprivileged youth in the country.
BOTTOMLINE The PH3 is a great versatile headphones for the casual listener.

Lenovo Yoga S730 Reviewed by Jewel Sta. Ana
When it comes to sleek and convertible laptops, there’s only one name in the market that comes to my mind, and that is Lenovo. For years, Lenovo has offered stylish laptops for everyday use, and with the arrival of the refreshed versions of its Yoga series, consumers are in for a more optimized computing device. Through our good friends from Lenovo, we got our hands on the first Yoga model that was released in the local market. Is the Yoga S730 a hit or a miss? Let’s find out. DESIGN The Yoga series has become a cult favorite for its sophisticated design and its capability to transform into multiple modes (either a laptop, tablet, and a few modes in between), but the S730 is far from its previous siblings. It has adopted a new naming convention, bearing the letter “S” for slim at just 11.9 mm thin. Apart from being the slimmest laptop from the brand, it retains the premium look to its DNA. Our review unit comes in an iron-gray with an aluminum, exterior chassis which is definitely something that you would want to bring out in a coffee shop. On its left side lies the headphone and microphone combo jack, together with a USB-C 3.1 Gen-1 port. When turned to the right, it reveals the two Thunderbolt 3 ports (one of which has an alwayson charging feature) and a reset button. The power button is ergonomically placed just above the minimalist, white LED backlit chiclet keyboard. Yoga’s iconic logo embossed in silver is placed on the upper left corner of the device.
HARDWARE For a tech journalist who is always on the go, it gives almost everything that I want in an ultrabook. It boasts a 13.3 Full HD display with razor-thin bezels that maximize screen size for streaming digital content online and is equipped with Dolby Vision for immersive entertainment. This is paired with the Dolby Atmos speaker system, bringing in the action from your screen right in front of you. The front-firing speakers are placed underneath to give way to its cooling system which pulls air in through secondary vents hidden in the keyboard.
hours changed my mindset. It’s a good device for multitasking, and I personally think that it optimizes my productivity as a writer. Replacing the usual touchscreen display and pen support on the latest Yoga unit is a chiclet keyboard and large trackpad which makes accomplishing everyday tasks pleasant even during travel. However, it lacks USB and HDMI ports so you may want to invest on external USB-C ports. Switching between background apps is buttery smooth. However, don’t expect it to handle graphics-intensive PC games since it doesn’t have a discrete graphics unit. It’s definitely not a portable gaming laptop, but it can decently run lighter games like The Sims 4 and CS:GO. The S730 also ticks a lot of boxes in the entertainment section. It has a 13.3-inch FHD display powered by Dolby Vision which adds a punch of color to any digital content being viewed. However, you won’t be able to get a 4K option unless you take advantage of its Thunderbolt 3 ports and an external display. The placement of its Dolby Atmos speakers might be odd since it is underneath, but it is purposely made to deliver impeccable, surround-sound audio flowing above and beneath you even in high volumes. Lenovo claims that Yoga S730’s battery can last up to 12 hours, but upon my experience with the unit, it only lasted up to eight hours. It might not be the posted 12, but plenty to keep going throughout the day especially while traveling. Its Rapid Charge technology more than makes up for that, giving you an 80 percent charge in an hour.
Lenovo has invested a lot in its hardware without compromising mobility or performance. Combining power and speed, the Yoga S730 equipped with an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor mated with 16 GB LPDDR3 memory and 512 GB PCle SSD storage. To top it off, it comes with a fingerprint scanner with Windows Hello.
Adding more security features to the laptop is a free one month trial of McAfee LiveSafe and Microsoft Office 365, pre-installed Lenovo Vantage (the brand’s own device management app), and a very responsive fingerprint scanner through Windows Hello.

compelling specifications on its latest generation of Yoga series starting with the premium Yoga S730. For some, it might be a larger investment than initially expected, but such a powerful ultrabook is a worthy one, particularly if it helps you accomplish money-making work. SPECIFICATIONS: • Processor: 8th generation Intel Core i7-8565U (WHL) • Graphics: Intel HD 620 • Display: 13.3-inch FHD (1920x1080) display with Dolby Vision • Memory: 8 GB/16GB LPDDR3 • Storage: 128 GB/256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB PCIe SSD • Speaker System: Dolby Atmos • Battery: 42 Wh, up to 12 hours • Operating System: Windows 10 Home • Ports: 2 x USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (one with always-on charging), USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, headphone/mic combo jack • Features: fingerprint scanner, Rapid Charge technology • Dimensions: 307 mm x 210 mm x 11.9 mm • Weight: 1.1 kg What’s Hot: • Premium and solid build design • USB Type-C with Rapid Charge and Always-On charging What’s Not: • Limited ports for peripherals • Absence of an external GPU option

COVER STORY
Life is digital. It’s hard to imagine existence without our devices. In a world where hyperconnectivity is the norm, and FOMO (fear of missing out) is a natural occurrence, smartphones, laptops, and wearables have become not only tools for communication but also necessities for living in the modern age. No matter how people try to avoid using gadgets, we spend more and more time with them. These days, one device has multiple functions so users won’t have to have multiple gadgets for calls and emails. Buyers now consider camera features when comparing what smartphones to buy. Manufacturers have built laptops that can do double duty as work and entertainment machines. Then, there are laptops that can be converted into tablets. Audio devices are no longer limited to audiophiles. Even everyday users are meticulous in choosing which earphones or headphones have the best noise-canceling feature, or which one has the best bass. Listening to music, or watching videos, or playing mobile games are Filipinos’ way of dealing with traffic, so it is only right to invest even just a little bit on the best earphones. While too many devices came out this year than we have room for in the magazine, here are some of the ones that impressed us the most.

Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, Nathan Blecharczyk
To date, Airbnb pulls in revenue in the billions of dollars, and under the leadership of Chesky, CEO; Gebbia, CPO, and Blacharczyk, CSO; the company is all over the world, with a number of subsidiaries under it, without owning a single bed for rent. It’s a perfect example of disrupting big businesses, and great for everyone involved, all from the humble start of a few air mattresses.
The first of the trio, Brian Chesky, is a New York native, and the child of two social workers. He showed an early interest in art, particularly drawing and designing, eventually getting a degree in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. Work saw him take a post as an industrial designer at a firm in Los Angeles. It was at this point that his friend Joe Gebbia convinced him to move to San Francisco to start a business together. Joe Gebbia, a Georgia Native, likewise had a design background with a degree in Industrial Design and Graphics Design, and the addition of some business courses at Brown and MIT. The pair left their jobs, and it was about at this point that the path to Airbnb started to unfold. A design conference in San Francisco saw a huge spike in hotel bookings, leaving visiting participants nowhere to stay. Coincidentally, the enterprising pair couldn’t make rent that month, increased. Seeing their need to avoid being homeless, the influx of people, and an opportunity before them, Chesky and Gebbia shelled out for three inflatable mattresses, and made space in their apartment for rent. The venture saw three guests at their first Airbed and Breakfast. The third member of the Airbnb trio is Nathan Blecharczyk. A Harvard Computer Science graduate, Nathan displayed a knack for business and IT early on by putting up his own software company in high school. His path intersected with Chesky and Gebbia in San Francisco, becoming the fledgling Airbnb’s CTO. Airbnb eventually got the attention

1999, Ma, with the investment from 18 of his friends, started a brand-new company, Alibaba. com. Alibaba was a website that facilitated business to business market deals. On October 1999 and January 2000, Alibaba received foreign investments amounting to USD 25 billion. In 2003, Ma started added new subsidiaries to Alibaba with Taobao Marketplace (an online marketplace like eBay), Alipay (Alibaba’s e-currency), Alimama (Alibaba’s marketing platform), Aliexpress (Alibaba’s marketplace for international customers).
Airbnb
If you’ve ever planned a vacation, particularly one overseas, you will no doubt be aware of just how difficult it can be to find a reasonably priced place to stay. Once you’re out, there’s the additional matter of the home you leave behind, just sitting there, being useless. Airbnb solves both those issues in a single, elegant manner. The idea for the home-sharing service sprung from the minds of Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, entrepreneurs with a great idea, and the ability to make it happen.
the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. He left the position because he saw a bigger opportunity in striking out on his own on the Internet.
Jack Ma
In 2018, Ma was named as China’s second richest man with a net worth of USD 37.2 billion. Alibaba is still China’s largest e-commerce platform and with stakes in other Asian internet marketplaces like Lazada. It is Asia’s largest e-commerce platform.
Alibaba
Ma Yun or most commonly known as Jack Ma, was born on September 10, 1964 in Hangzhou, China. As a young child, Ma had always been fascinated by the English language. During his childhood and teenage years, he would talk with foreigners at the Hangzhou International Hotel, offering them tours of Hangzhou in exchange for English lessons, in fact his nickname Jack was given him by a foreigner who found it difficult saying his name. Ma’s life was a rollercoaster. He failed his college entrance exams twice and after graduating with a degree in BA English, no company was willing to hire him. When KFC first opened their doors in Hangzhou, Ma and 23 others applied for jobs. KFC hired the 23 individuals except Ma. This failure motivated Ma, and after the KFC incident, he was hired as an English and International Trade lecturer at Hangzhou Dianzi University. After his teaching stint, Ma started his own translation company, Hangzhou Haibo Translation Agency. In 1995, as part of a business trip in the US, Ma was introduced to the Internet. There he noticed the lack of Chinese products on the online space which gave him an idea. He started his second company, chinapages.com which gave Chinese companies webpages. He eventually left Chinapages due to stiff competition from telecommunications companies in China. From 1998 to 1999 Ma was head of an internet company backed by
Ginni Rommetty, IBM
Virginia Marie Rometty, or simply Ginni Rometty, is not your ordinary boss. She is the first woman to hold the reins of IBM, a colossal computer company responsible for some of the best technologies we enjoy today. The Illinois-native Rometty was born of an Italian-American family. At the age of 15, the would-be CEO was already a hard worker, taking on various jobs to support her family. This perseverance put her at the top of her high school class and got her a GM STEM scholarship at the elite Northwestern University. As one of the few women in the engineering program, it seemed like Ginni was being groomed for her norm-defying future. After her short stint at General Motors institute, in 1981, Ginni joined IBM as a systems analyst and systems engineer. She rose through the

ranks and assumed the role of CEO in 2012. Since taking on the position, IBMs revenue has increased drastically. She leads the company with pride, towards a future where IBM would be recognized as a world leader in AI, cloud computing, and blockchain. Rometty is always on the lookout for the next big thing and she is taking big steps to make it known. IBM recently acquired cloud computing firm Red Hat, and is heavily invested in blockchain R&D.
computer engineering at the University of California (UCLA) but eventually dropped out to help launch a start-up file sharing and search engine company, Scour Inc., with his classmates. Kalanick became a millionaire when he sold the assets of Red Swoosh, a filesharing firm he built with a friend, to Akamai Technologies. Meanwhile, Camp, who is a Canadian, completed his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Calgary and garnered his master’s degree in software engineering five years after. He launched StumbleUpon, an online content discovery portal that matches the interests of the user by using recommendations from connected peers and social networks and then later on sold to eBay.
In 2011, Dorsey returned to Twitter as an executive director after Williams stepped down. In July 2015, Dorsey was named interim CEO when Dick Costolo stepped down from the position. He became the permanent CEO three months after. In its first few years, Twitter started as a laughing stock in mainstream media. There were people who believed that the platform was narcissistic in nature with people posting updates on themselves every so often. This changed in 2008 when US Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain used the site as a platform to update their supporters on the campaign trail. By February 2019, Twitter recorded a total of 321 million active users. At present, the platform is being used by various media organization for real-time news updates.
Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp Uber
They say that bright innovations start from small and spontaneous ideas. In Uber’s case, the commuting experience of two friends on a snowy evening in Paris lead to a eureka moment that would eventually introduce the concept of ride-hailing apps. Ten years ago, entrepreneurs Travis Kalanick and Garett Camp founded UberCab which enabled passengers to get a ride from their smartphone. It officially kicked off in San Francisco a year after, providing black-car service within the area. It became a huge hit, attracting investors including venture firm First Round Capital, company advisor and entrepreneur Chris Sacca, and Napster cofounder Shawn Fanning. In 2011, the company went international and was launched in the city where the duo conceived the idea—Paris. It rolled out UberX, a service that allowed people to work for Uber driving their own car. Since then, the company has been providing cutting-edge, transportation services to meet the growing demands of its customers. This includes UberPool (carpooling service), Uber Eats (food delivery service), Uber Freight (shipping service), Uber Bike (e-bike and e-scooter rental service), and Uber Copter (helicopter service). Uber now operates in more than 600 cities globally, and changed urban mobility. It is reported to venture on drone delivery, safer self-driving cars, and shared air transportation in urban areas. Kalanick and Camp have a strong background in Software Engineering and built their own startups. The former mostly spent his childhood with computers, writing codes during middle school and decided to pursue 30

Jack Dorsey Twitter
Jack Dorsey was born on November 19, 1976, in St. Louis, Missouri. Dorsey was already interested in computers and communications at an early age. He started programming during his highschool days at Bishop DuBourg High School in St. Louis. When he was 15, he wrote a dispatching program that helped manage taxis. Dorsey went on to study at the University of Missouri-Rolla for two years before transferring to New York University in 1997. Like most tech icons, Dorsey would drop out of college in 1999. In 2000, he moved to California where he started an online dispatch company. Dorsey was interested in the capabilities and possibilities of instant messaging. He approached a company run by Blogger founder Evan Williams called Odeo. At the time, Odeo was interested with instant text messaging while Dorsey was interested in user status updates. He proposed combining the two and with the help of other Odeo executives, Noah Glass and Biz Stone, they started a platform which sends status updates as SMS which they called Twttr. In 2006, Dorsey posted the first-ever tweet, “just setting up my twttr.” Dorsey was named as Twitter’s first CEO before stepping down in 2008 to give way to Williams who funded the project. He left the company soon after. In the time he was away from Twitter, Dorsey started a new company called Square, which with the help of square device left customers pay on their phones using their credit cards.
Reed Hasting and Marc Randolph Netflix
Before there were online video streaming services and the Internet, a few decades ago there were video rental companies. Who would have thought that the world’s leading media streaming service provider had such humble beginnings? American software engineers Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings founded Netflix in 1999 as a DVD subscription service. Randolph, who finished his geology degree at Hamilton College, designed the initial user interface of the website which features an online catalog of movies. In 1999, the duo created a business model that led to its current success: a subscription-based service with no due dates or late fees and unlimited access to content. Hastings took over as the head of Netflix in that same year while Randolph focused on product development. The latter left the company three years later, entrusting everything to co-founder and former Peace Corps officer Reed Hastings. Finishing his graduate studies in Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University, Hastings piloted initiatives that would improve Netflix’s online services. It began streaming movies and television shows in 2007, propelling the rise of Internet TV. Shortly, it has become a household name. Hastings also partnered with consumer electronics brands, including video game www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
consoles, to allow streaming in a wide array of devices. In 2013, Netflix ventured into media production with its first-ever original drama series House of Cards. And the rest was history. At present, it has produced over a thousand original titles and acquired a license to international, award-winning films and TV programs. The global video streaming service is currently available in over 190 countries.

His words have often gotten the ire of experts and the public alike, but at the very least, he manages to get a conversation going. Whether you view him as loud and obnoxious, the perfect candidate for a fiery burnout, or so far ahead of his time as to constantly be misunderstood, nobody can deny the impact this man has had on the world today.

Who knew that a curious child gifted in numbers would become the catalyst of change for a tech company nearing bankruptcy? Tzwu-Fang Su, better known to computer nerds everywhere as Lisa Su, was born in Taiwan to parents who valued the importance of math and science. This interest, instilled in Lisa as a kid, stayed with her until she and her family emigrated to the United States. She would be known to take apart then put back together her brother’s remote control cars: a display of her technology prowess early in childhood. After graduating from Bronx High School of Science, Lisa challenged herself and went on to major in Electrical Engineering at the premier Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Throughout her years in uni, Lisa would work on various technologies such as silicon wafers, semiconductors, and other similar devices. She pursued a master’s degree then a PhD at MIT while exploring silicon-oninsulator (SOI) technology, which she would be inducted into the National Academy of Engineering. Working with different tech companies, Lisa made the decision to jump to AMD. The American multinational semiconductor company was then likened to a sinking ship for its dipping sales. With her management and leadership skills, Lisa, who became CEO in 2014, pushed the company to branch out beyond PC. Under her wing, AMD became the exclusive chip provider for the Xbox and PlayStation. The microprocessor manufacturer continues to diversify with coveted CPU and GPU architecture, allowing it a revenue growth of 25 percent in 2017. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
Where does one even start when talking about a man like Elon Musk? Equal parts brash, brilliant, and controversial, Musk is a larger-than-life figure whose personality and status are right up there with the giants of the tech world. Elon Musk was born in the academic city of Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971. He moved to Canada when he was 17, and then once more to the US two years later to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with an Economics degree from Wharton, as well as a Physics degree from the College of Arts and Sciences. While his original plan was to pursue a Ph.D. at Stanford, he changed course and instead dove right into an entrepreneurial career. Armed with double degrees, a unique approach towards work, and an intellectual brilliance that would clearly take him places, he co-founded Zip2 in the 90s. This company was bought up by Compaq for the neat sum of USD 340 million in 1999. From that initial success, he moved on to creating an online bank, which eventually became PayPal, which was in turn acquired by eBay in 2002 for a cool 1.5 billion USD. Along with being the Founder, CEO, and lead designer of SpaceX, Musk is best known as the man behind Tesla. His role as CEO and product architect of the company has allowed it to become the name is electric vehicles worldwide. Musk himself said that the goal of his numerous companies is generally to change the world and humanity keeping global warming in check, and keeping the human race from going extinct. He famously gave up his post advising US President Trump after Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. There’s much more to Musk than saving the world though. He also started The Boring Company, whose primary preoccupation is tunnels, but may be best known for creating a personal flamethrower. Because why not? Musk is also known for being vocal about, well, a lot of things. From his stand on AI (it’s summoning the demon), public transport

Jeff Bezos was born on January 12, 1964. Even as a child, Bezos already displayed interests in science and technologies. He converted his family’s garage into his own little laboratory where he experimented with different contraptions. He once rigged his bedroom with an electric alarm system to keep his younger siblings away. Bezos graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1986 with a degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. After which, he was offered jobs from different tech giants Intel and Bell labs. He settled for a job at Fitel, a financial technology telecommunications startup, and then transitioned to the banking industry working as a product manager for Bankers Trust. In 1990 he joined D.E. Shaw & Co., a newly founded hedge fund, where he became the company’s youngest senior vice president at the age of 30. Bezos left D.E Shaw & Co. in 1994 to start his own company, Amazon, in his garage. Initially, it started as an online bookstore. Bezos launched Amazon.com a year later and opened the company to the public in 1997. In 1998, Amazon.com started to branch out of the book market, selling CDs and videotapes. Clothes, electronics, and toys later followed. With major retail partnerships, Amazons yearly sales jumped from USD 510,000 in 1995 to over USD 232.9 billion in 2018. Catriona Gray Taking the reins of her destiny
Words by Marlet D. Salazar Catriona Gray took control of her journey to become the Philippines’ fourth Miss Universe. After failing to capture the world, Catriona immediately worked on the blueprint of her quest to conquer the universe. She meticulously picked her team by looking at their expertise and how each of their strengths stitches into her vision. She worked independently, but with a group of dedicated individuals, who believed and supported her all the way to the crown. It’s a natural thing for Catriona to plan and organize to achieve her goals. She admits to being a big dreamer with clear goals and a stubborn spirit to realize them. “I’m very goal-oriented, and once I’ve set my mind on something, I put my heart and soul into it, and make sure I have all the tools to make it happen,” said Catriona. “This is why I am thrilled to represent Smart Signature, which empowers everyone with the digital experience they need to achieve more and realize a much better version of themselves. With Smart Signature, we have one less thing to worry about while pursuing our goals and making a difference.” A digital native and very well-versed in technology, Catriona makes extensive use of the Internet for research, and more importantly, as an effective way to get her voice out there as an advocate for educating the youth and raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.

She sees the digital realm as “a tool, platform, or a microphone to enhance your community and personal brand - or just get your voice out there.” As of this writing, Catriona has 6.1 million followers on Instagram. Her job as Miss Universe requires her to travel a lot and be constantly in touch with people, so she uses different social media sites to engage with her supporters. It’s a known fact that Catriona has the most exquisite and sultry voice, so music streaming comes naturally for her. She uses her data plans when streaming movies or videos. “I never like it when it’s quiet,” she quipped. As an only child who lives away from her parents, and with a hectic travel schedule, she also relies on mobile apps to keep in constant touch with family and friends. In an act worthy of the Miss Congeniality tag, Catriona even created a chat group to stay connected with her fellow Miss Universe contestants after the competition. Always a go-getter, Catriona is definitely making her mark as Miss Universe and Smart Signature brand ambassador. It’s going to be a hectic reign, but it’s a journey that she has prepared for all her life, and one that she hopes will inspire everyone to take charge of their own destiny.

MOBILITY
2,500-KILOMETERS WITH THE ISUZU MU-X AND ISUZU D-MAX Words by Belle Alba Photos by Clifford Dela Paz and Gilbert Chao
We were about to set off from Manila to Dumaguete on a 10-day road trip with three motorcycles, and wrestled with which support vehicle would be the best option for our team. Initially, we thought taking along one van would do the trick, as it would carry all the gear for our group of four riders and four support staff. After much discussion, though, the group agreed that two vehicles—an SUV and a pick-up truck—would be the better combination. With two vehicles, the lead car could scout out the terrain, stop at vantage points for those Instagram-worthy photo-ops, as well as race on ahead to ensure space on the RoRo ferries for those crucial sea crossings.
The plan was to take off from Manila and take RoRo ferries to cross the islands of Mindoro and Panay on our way to Dumaguete City in Negros Island. We’d spend three days in Negros, then backtrack the same route home to Manila. In all, it would take some 10 days and about 2,500-kilometers. Happily, our friends at Isuzu Philippines Corporation very readily sent along an Isuzu mu-X 3.0L LS-A 4x2 AT and an Isuzu D-MAX RZ4E LS 4x2 AT—both ideal for our needs. As weather was unpredictable, the crew’s luggage and other critical equipment were all securely stowed in the spacious cargo room of the mu-X, while the open cargo bed of the D-MAX was a great solution on how to safely carry a small jerrycan of spare fuel, odd-sized stuff and, if the need arose, even transport the two-wheelers in the convoy. The Isuzu mu-X 3.0L LS-A 4x2 AT, powered by a 2,999-cc Blue Power diesel engine with turbo-intercooler that delivers 177 PS of power and 380 Nm of torque, easily took on the steep inclines of the Mabinay highway linking Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental to Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental. The Isuzu D-MAX RZ4E LS 4x2 AT, with its smaller 1,898-cc Blue Power engine, could not be left far behind with its maximum power output of 150 PS and 350 Nm maximum torque. We averaged about 250 to 300 kilometers each day, spending some 6-hours on the road which meant interior amenities were much appreciated.
40
AUGUST 2019
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
The mu-X, in addition to its 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, also has a 10-inch roof-mounted monitor so rear passengers can watch videos while traveling. With three rows of seats, the mu-X can accommodate up to seven people, making it ideal for barkada or family bonding road trips. While the D-MAX is less posh, its 7-inch audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and 6 speakers still make listening to your Spotify playlist a pleasurable experience. Across the flat coastal roads, rolling terrain, and winding mountain roads of Mindoro, Panay, and Negros islands, the Isuzu mu-X and D-MAX kept passengers safe with features such as dual airbags, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, high-mount stop lamp, reverse sensing system with reverse camera, among others. Additionally, the mu-X has a driver assist
system that includes electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, and hill descent control for a more confident drive. As we moved from island to island, we were subjected to micro-weather patterns like sudden torrential downpours, when the high ground clearance of the mu-X (230 mm) and the D-MAX (225 mm) kept us worry-free despite the occasional deep pools of water on the road. When the sun shone hot and bright, making the day oppressively humid, the interior cabins of both vehicles were cool havens with their air-conditioning systems which, on the mu-X, was an auto-climate control system with independent rear cooler control. With all the gadgets that we brought along, we were also very happy with the 12-volt accessory
socket (x2 on the mu-X) and three USB charging ports on both the mu-X and D-MAX. There was no need to fight over who needed to charge his/her phone, and we were even able to install front and rear dashcams to monitor our journey. Ten days and 2,500-kilometers on the Isuzu mu-X and D-MAX went by like a breeze, with our biggest worry being the low-pressure area that caused rough seas and high waves during the 4-hour ferry crossing between Caticlan in Malay, Aklan, and Roxas in Oriental Mindoro. So, going on a long, cross-country road trip through variable terrain? Worried about unpredictable weather? Lugging a lot of gear? Concerned about creature comforts? Want to be sure that everyone will be safe? Isuzu has you covered with the Isuzu mu-X and the Isuzu D-MAX.

Words by Ren Alcantara The D-Max, Isuzu’s well-loved pickup, has gotten a serious upgrade in the form of the Boondock variant. Available with either a manual or automatic transmission, the 4x2 D-Max Boondock comes with Isuzu’s powerful 3.0 liter 4JT1 BluePower turbodiesel engine. With greater ground clearance through new, 17-inch black alloy wheels, upgraded nitrogen-charged dampers, and Yokohama Geolandar tires, the Boondock edition is made for more serious trucking than the standard variant of the pickup. All told, you get an additional 12 mm more ground clearance, and a 100 mm increase in vehicle height, for a more imposing vehicle. Isuzu has also included a few cosmetic and functional changes out-of-the-box to further differentiate this from its standard stablemates. A blue-trimmed front grille, rocker panels, a bed liner, and roof rack round off the whole ride. Isuzu offers the

D-Max Boondock variant in either cosmic black, or galena gray. We were able to spend a day with the Boondock edition of the D-Max, taking it through city traffic, to where the roads ended to take some photos of the truck in its natural element. While it would have made a fine subject on its own, we felt that to do it justice, we’d have to load it up a bit. So we called up our friends at Adventure Cycles Philippines, and borrowed not one, but two KTM bikes for the D-Max Boondock to carry—and it did so without complaint. Through the drive, bumps, turns and photos, those of us sitting inside wouldn’t have known we had KTM’s 200 Duke and RC 390 strapped down to the truck bed. Should you want (or need) a bigger, badder D-Max, the Boondock variant can be yours for PHP 1,390,000 with a six-speed manual transmission, or PHP 1,455,000 for the six-speed automatic transmission version.

The size of the Croner makes it versatile enough to be used in different industries from agriculture, construction, and even sanitation.
Being the only Japanese company in the Volvo group, UD developed the Croner as a hybrid of European technology and Japanese quality. To maintain quality, UD tested the Croner in three different continents during development before coming up with the final model.
“Named after the Greek god Chronus, Croner was designed to save your time, and as we all know saving time means saving money. Croner has been developed to help our customers optimize the use of time, to make every moment count,” said Steve Hedouin, managing director, UD Trucks Philippines.
The UD Croner has two different variants: the smaller LKE with 210 hp and 825 Nm of torque, and a large PKE with 250 hp and 950 Nm of torque. Both variants are available in 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmissions.
Apart from the Croner, UD Trucks also launched their telematics service which lets truck owners track and monitor their fleet through their computers or even on their phones via the UD Telematics app. UD’s telematics system can

track location, fuel economy, as well as engine problems. Trucks owner can also customize telemetrics to their needs. They could set boundaries on their trucks with the system notifying them if the vehicle crosses the said boundary. They could also monitor the driving behavior of their drivers with the system, recording almost everything from harsh acceleration and braking to whether or not the drivers are wearing seat belts. In the future, the company also plans to add a CCTV in the truck cabin for owners to monitor drivers. The UD’s Telematics system will be available soon in all vehicle variants. AUGUST 2019

All-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class launched Auto Nation Group, the official distributor of Mercedes-Benz in the Philippines, has unveiled the all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class, redefining practicality, versatility and safety while putting emphasis on a sportier tourer identity. This is the third iteration of the B-Class since Mercedes-Benz introduced the compact tourer in 2005 as part of a new segment of vehicles showcasing cutting edge, hip, and exciting designs catering to a younger market.
The B-Class Offers More User Value and Space With an exciting and progressive new design, the new B-Class has redefined its relaxed and practical look with a sportier profile without sacrificing space or user value. Dubbed as a small multi-purpose vehicle, one of the main highlights of the new B-Class is its spacious interior and cabin. The new B-Class offers increased interior dimensions from its predecessor, offering more headroom and elbowroom in both the front and the rear. The seat is also more elevated to a more level position making it more comfortable to sit
in the vehicle. It also improved the all-around visibility, minimizing the risk of overlooking vehicles and pedestrians. The new B-Class has a through-loading capability for longer luggage, thanks to its 40-40-20 lay-fold rear seats capability. Whether its dad’s golf bags, mom’s luggage, or the baby stroller, the new B-Class offers no compromise on space. Highly functional, versatile and adaptable, too, moms and dads will appreciate the many ways the B-Class can serve as their family vehicle.
High Safety Standards The new B-Class, being an ideal family vehicle, showcases state-of-the-art active safety features which were only available on more premium models such as the prestigious S-Class. The new B-Class is equipped with an extended Active Brake Assist as a standard. Depending on the situation, it can effectively help to mitigate the consequences of rear-end collisions with slower-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles ahead, and even with crossing pedestrians and cyclists, or prevent them altogether. If the distance drops significantly below the safety threshold, the system issues a visual warning to the driver. If it detects a serious risk of collision, the driver receives an additional, audible warning. It also computes the brake pressure required to prevent a collision, if this is still possible. If, having been warned, the driver then steps on the brake pedal, the system is capable
52
AUGUST 2019
of boosting insufficient braking pressure in line with the needs of the situation. In doing so, it makes the best possible use of the remaining distance in order to leave the vehicles behind room to brake. If the driver fails to respond, Active Brake Assist can go one step further and brake autonomously if the danger of collision persists, so as to mitigate the severity of the accident or, in the best case, even prevent it. Also included as standard is Attention Assist with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn the driver in a timely manner of inattentiveness and drowsiness. To add to one’s peace of mind, the vehicle comes equipped with airbags for driver and front passenger, including windowbags and kneebag for the driver, as well as ISOFIX child-seat mounts and TopTether attachment points in the rear backrest, plus a host of other safety features.

MBUX: “Hey Mercedes!” From its debut on the new A-Class, the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is now also found in the all-new B-Class, revolutionizing a new era in automotive connectivity. At the heart of the MBUX system is a highly intelligent virtual assistant, which is activated by pressing a button in the steering wheel or by simply saying, “Hey Mercedes.” It caters to voice commands to attend to infotainment
functions such as destination input, phone call, music selection, climate control, and ambient lighting. MBUX comes with a natural speech recognition program that helps it to recognize and understand nearly all sentences from the fields of multimedia and vehicle operation. The MBUX feature is equipped with a 7.4-inches touchscreen display—a highlight of the
comprehensive touch control concept that combines the functionalities of the touchscreen, a touchpad on the center console, and the touch-control buttons on the steering wheel for less driver distraction and stress. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn, thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX is customizable and adapts to the user.
Sporty Design with Practical Performance The all-new B-Class is a combination of sportiness and being practical. The profile of the new B-Class is sporty, dynamic, and athletic without sacrificing its space or user value. Inside, the new B-Class continues what the new A-Class started. Its interior is featured by the wide screen display, which serves as the instrument cluster and the infotainment system powered by the MBUX. The five round air vents feature a high-grade turbine look with finely styled air ducts, inspired by the world of aviation. Its Artico-leather seats offer excellent ergonomics and a high degree of comfort even on longer journeys. Under the hood, the new B-Class is powered by an in-line 4 engine with 7-speed dual clutch transmission that produces 136hp and 200Nm of torque.
The new Mercedes-Benz B-Class is priced at PHP 2,690,000. All Mercedes-Benz dealerships nationwide (EDSA Greenhills, Alabang, BGC and Cebu) started accepting pre-orders and reservations on July 23.

EXECUTIVE PROFILE
Pallasena Viswanath Philippines Managing Director, HP Inc. Words by Marlet D. Salazar | Photos by Jezeil Romero There is something remarkably philosophical about Pallasena Viswanath, managing director at HP Philippines, that upon entry to the vast meeting room, the air was suddenly filled with optimism. You would hang on every word he says because you know there’s a lesson or two to be picked up over the course of a casual conversation. Viswanath has been with HP for 30 years and climbed the corporate ladder by embracing every possible opportunity to learn. He started as a Sales Engineer in Bangalore, India and after years of serving in multiple geographies, he was tasked to head the company’s Philippine headquarters. Viswanath shares with Gadgets Magazine some of his thoughts on life, work, and HP’s brand values.
GOALS HP’s mission is to create technology that makes life better for everyone, everywhere. There is innovation in everything that we do. Our brand promise is to engineer innovation and experiences that amaze. We bring the latest PC and print innovation and services to the Philippines.
CHALLENGES We never have to believe that we are always ready for the future. It’s almost like we’re telling that you can be disrupted in the market. The only way to stay ahead is to be aware of what could come and prepare yourself for that. There is one philosophy that I follow. You’ve got to stay in the present. You’ve got to be in the present and make the most of what you are doing while you look forward and keep reinventing yourself. Never be satisfied with what you know. You should try and be satisfied with what you have. I’m still within this framework of how technology is going to improve the lifestyle of everybody everywhere. At HP, we innovate so people succeed in technology.

THE HP PORTFOLIO We are focused on bringing products which are the most secure in the world: HP printers and PCs. However, people are too focused on the perimeter. It’s like you focus a lot on the fence but you gave away the keys. The PCs and printers, all the keys are into the network. We make the most secure products for the industry across all devices. Everything in the world now is connected, everything can be reached, and everything can be breached. That is just a few of the reasons we incorporated all security solutions we can think of in all our product lineup. If you buy an HP product, you have a chance to be secure. That’s the slogan we really like to say.
THE INDUSTRY
ON LEADERSHIP
As rapid urbanization and hyper-globalization megatrends continue to impact the Philippines, we are observing denser living conditions, increased mobile workstyles and lifestyles, and faster information transfers from smartphones, to printers to laptops; all over the world. Consumers, mobile workers, SMBs and large businesses will need to master new skills for this future and HP is reinventing our PC and print innovation to address the unique needs of our customers in the Philippines.
At HP Inc., leadership is expected of my team as we recognize that everyone can be a leader in some way or other. We define leadership as imagining the future, inspiring the team, and making it happen. When we talk about imagining the future, it’s all about aiming for the extraordinary. Never be satisfied with what we have. Building a vision and a picture for you, people around you, and the society at large. The next part of it is inspiring and bringing in the team together. Whether you’re a big leader, or big manager running a big organization, or if you are an individual contributor, you’re never alone. You
have an ecosystem to work with. You got to always inspire people around you to subscribe to that vision that you have. Create a vision and inspire the team. The most important thing after that is about making it happen. Those are the leadership principles with which we are adapting at work and they align very much to my own core set of values as well.
PHILOSOPHY
MESSAGE
My philosophy is to stay positive, working with trust, and believing in the good of everybody around you. Always know that there is a better way to do things. In HP, nowadays, we call it the growth mindset. It’s a term that has come about that reflects the fact that everything is possible. We have gone away from saying something from saying no, we never say no in HP. That has become my philosophy also even today. At best or at worst, I say “not yet.” That growth mindset set something which we are embracing across the company.
Stay humble but stay hungry. One thing we must remember is that there are no elevators in life to go up. You have to take the stairs. You have to be ready to take the stairs. It can be a grind sometimes, but when you reach and take the stairs and go up, you are going to be a stronger person than the way you started with. That’s my message to my team, always.

Stream it, baby! Apps to download for your next binge-watching Words by Jewel Sta. Ana
Even back in high school, my friends remember me as a cinephile who’s always on the lookout for video streaming websites. At that time, their availability was limited to specific regions, meaning the only means of catching up with foreign programs and movies was through cable TV and prohibitively expensive subscriptions. One of the big disruptors of our age, video streaming has redefined the way we watch and access content whether it’s on our television screens or smartphone displays.
HOOQ
For both new and classic Pinoy content
Those who enjoy local films shouldn’t miss downloading HOOQ on any smart mobile device. A joint venture of Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Singtel, it is the first paid video-on-demand service to launch across Southeast Asia. The inclusion of Filipino movies and TV shows in its library was made possible through its partnership with local production companies such as Viva Films, GMA, and ABS-CBN. Updating its catalog daily, it contains a massive library of both new and old Filipino movies and shows. The lineup includes award-winning indie films 100 Tula Para Kay Stella, Die Beautiful, The Day After Valentines, Ulan, Meet me in St. Gallen, I America, Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B, and 2 Cool 2 Be Forgotten.
PROS: • Updates its libraryregularly • Lower monthly subscription fee compared to competitors (PHP 149)

VIU
For your quick fix of K-dramas and Korean movies
If there’s one thing that my aunts and I share, it would probably be our undying love for K-Dramas. I remember when we used to bingewatch Lovers in Paris on DVD sets that we bought overseas. Now more than ever, it’s easier to access thousands of K-Drama titles for free through Viu. The video streaming provider is under Hong Kong’s PCCW Media, top ICT company, delivering content in different genres from Asia’s top content providers with local language subtitles, as well as original productions. Its library also boasts Korean variety and reality programs from the country’s largest television networks that cater mostly to K-Pop fans and K-Drama junkies. Such shows are Produce 101, The Return of Superman, Encounter, and While You Were Sleeping.
CONS:
PROS:
• Some titles require an additional rental fee on top of the subscription fee
• Uploads the latest episodes real-time • Zero subscription fee (for basic account)
CONS: • You need patience waiting for the ads to finish playing • Access to movies requires subscribers to upgrade their basic account to premium

The humble beginnings of streaming
Before getting to today’s endless hours of highdef streaming content, broadcasting networks had basically been live streaming special reports and sporting events since the 1990s. The term, which literally means broadcasting of real-time video to an audience over the Internet, expanded in meaning through time. It’s no longer just television networks who have
the infrastructure to stream anymore. With the right equipment, anyone can be a streamer. Gamers can easily broadcast gameplay to their fans through streaming platforms such as Twitch. Celebrities and influencers also break geographical barriers through Facebook and Instagram Live to get their messages to their followers.
NETFLIX NETFLIX
For original and international digital content at your fingertips
Any discussion on streaming services wouldn’t be complete without mention of Netflix. Founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1977, Netflix had its humble beginnings as a video rental company. To survive in the changing times, it started to venture into media streaming which put the company into low-earth orbit. Apart from partnering with local and international distributors and creators to gain exclusive streaming rights for a variety of TV shows, documentaries, and movies, Netflix also produces and distributes their own digital content covering various genres. Its notable series include the cult favorite BoJack Horseman, the zombie hit Kingdom, Stranger Things, the web series adaptation of Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why, and the animated series for Sanrio’s Aggretsuko. You can even find classics like Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and Big Bang Theory in their complete glory. It also provides membership plans tailored for everyone’s needs and supports thousands of internet-connected devices including Chromecast, Playstation 3 and 4, the X-Box One and 360, and smart TVs.
PROS: • Lets you enjoy up to 4K videos • Supports most smart devices and game consoles
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
CONS: • Content availability varies by region • New content is not available right away
The rise of media streaming providers opens a massive door of opportunity for both traditional broadcasting companies and independent production houses to share their content with the rest of the world. It makes watching more mobile and present, responding more to the growing demands of the audience. These groundbreaking video streaming apps give tons of ways to enjoy content online.

JONY IVE’S Most Iconic Designs Words by Gerry Gaviola
Jony Ive’s announcement of his eventual departure from Apple later this year is nothing but unfortunate, though the sum of his creations will forever be remembered.
Apple and Silicon Valley’s prominent tech reporters. Ive, who’s been a key player in Apple’s design choices over his 30 years of service, has announced that he’ll be leaving the tech behemoth soon to start his own design firm, of which, Apple will be served as one of its primary clients.
Jony Ive’s resignation announcement has caused a series of seismic dramas between

the WSJ’s controversial coverage over the announcement, here we take a step away from all the turbulence and focus on Jony Ive’s design legacy. Influencing not just tech design, but design in general, his language and style showcased in Apple’s operating systems, devices, and even spaces will forever emanate.
iPod Mini Like many people, my first introduction to Apple was through its iconic music player, the iPod. Every now and then, when I flick through a contextual menu in my iPhone and the haptic feedback, as well as the “click wheel” sound activates, I find myself reminiscing the first iPod that introduced a similar feel. The extremely popular iPod mini featured the first ever solid-state click wheel, which was ergonomically designed for better navigation and control. Encased in a beautiful aluminum body, the cheaper relative of the then iPod came in an array of vibrant and inviting colors which enticed many to make the purchase. Photo Source: Apple
apple watch series 4 The Series 4 features the first major redesign of Apple’s ever so popular smartwatch. From reviews here and there, you’ve probably already been made aware of the rounded screen corners and the bigger screen real estate albeit a preserved overall size. However, paying more attention to detail will reveal the watch’s most probable underrated feature—its new shape. Compared to the Series 3 and below, the shape of the Series 4 actual appears rounder and consistent in an unobtrusive pleasing way. Apple’s rounded corners for this device, as well as for many of its other offerings, look stunningly consistent for a reason. Photo Source: Hackernoons.com

Apple’s attention to detail is ever so present when you take a closer look at its product designs. Many non-Apple devices which feature a rounded corner don’t exactly look visually pleasing for a reason. If you care about design, you’d know that pulling of rounded rectangles can be tricky since the transition between the straight line to the actual curve can seem abrupt, thus causing a sudden jump in curvature. Apple fixes this by using a special formula which incorporates ellipses. If you have an Apple device near you, notice how they’re not perfect rectangles with perfectly rounded corners. They actually follow an elliptical pattern.

The iPhone has always been a winner when it comes to sleekness and power. Birthed from another beautiful redesign, the iPhone X preserves the legacy of which iPhones are most famous for. Inside and out, it seems that nothing is wasted on the phone. In the exterior, we see a beautiful slab of OLED technology wrapped around durable stainless steel. On the back is a premium glass design which makes way for the phone’s wireless charging. Its internals is nothing but precise and well thought out, with its custom fit logic board, battery and camera components.
Before the G3, computers were grey, dull, and served little or no design inspiration. The G3, released in 1998, changed that with 11 colors to choose from. The computer, released during the time of newly returned Steve Jobs, featured a brightly colored translucent plastic enclosure that allowed you to see the tech inside the computer.

ios 7 Major redesigns can be risky as the essence of the product can often be lost in translation. Taking another risk, Ive stepped up and was mainly behind the company’s iOS 7 major design overhaul. Veering away from the dated skeuomorphic design, iOS 7 featured a much flatter and modern aesthetic painted in pastel colors. Adding to this was iOS’s translucent design coupled with the introduction of the parallax effect.

Allow us to paint a scene. You’re riding a train on your way home, or maybe you’re on your lunch break, and you see people holding their phones in landscape mode. Maybe they’re streaming digital content or recording a vlog. You look around, and notice more and more of them, as if some kind of disease has infected smartphone users, with no regard to age or gender. They’re hooked to their smartphones as they tap furiously and concentrate harder on their screens than their surroundings. Curious, you try to sneak a peek to see what’s going on. But before you get near, you’ll hear a faint and familiar anthem in the background. You can now see, as you move closer to their screens, a majestic base with five characters.

Propelling the mobile gaming phenomenon in the Philippines A few moments later, their speakers blast an announcement: “Welcome to Mobile Legends! Five seconds until the enemies reach the battlefield, smash them!“ It piques your interest. Before long, you’ve installed it on your phone as well, joining the masses of people with their eyes glued to smartphone screens. In the highly competitive and saturated world of mobile gaming, how did Mobile Legends manage what so many others have failed to achieve?
THE MYTH Developed and published by Chinese gaming company Moonton, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a 5v5 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game designed for mobile devices. Imagine Riot Games’ League of Legends, but played on a smaller screen. Two opposing teams need to battle and destroy each other’s bases while defending their own. It offers over 80 playable heroes, quick team matchmaking, a variety of game modes, built-in live streaming, and fast-paced gameplay which captured the hearts of both young and old. Initially, it rolled out to China, Indonesia, and Malaysia before it made its worldwide debut three years ago in iOS and Android mobile devices. Basically, players are randomly drafted into two teams for the ranked, classic, and arcade modes.
Each team, which consists of five heroes with corresponding roles, should push over three lanes to dominate the game and take down the opponent’s tower. Players can control their respective characters through a virtual joystick on their screen which includes movements and abilities. The heroes are classified into six different roles which have corresponding unique skills: Marksman, Assassin, Mage, Support, Fighter, and Tank. Each hero has its own item builds that optimize performance and power during the game. As of this writing, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has over 12 million downloads on the app stores and is one of the top-grossing mobile games worldwide.
THE RECEPTION Mobile Legends first made waves in to the Southeast Asia region after a soft launch in China, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Due to its user-friendly gameplay which is a first of its kind, many have become hooked on the title. You can play it whenever and wherever you want as long as you have mobile data. For the mobile game to thrive in the largest continent, the developers created a series of marketing initiatives like releasing a set of relatable heroes with Asian origins and backgrounds. The list includes original characters such as Lapu-Lapu (The Philippines), Chou and Zilong (China), Kagura and Hayabusa (Japan), Gatotkaca (Indonesia), Yi Sun-Shin (South Korea), and Rafaela (Egypt). With a professional league already in its third edition, Mobile Legends has morphed into the premier mobile game title in the region. In fact, it recently held the Southeast Asia leg of its competition in the Philippines last June 19 to 23 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. According to ABS-CBN’s report last June 4, the Philippines is the second most important market for Moonton and that the team will focus on organizing more www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
events for the Philippine market in the coming months. Business World’s report, meanwhile, reveals that the rapid growth of Mobile Legends represents the growth of esports in the country. The annual league being held in the country is also very timely as it gears up for the Southeast Asian Games where esports will debut as a new category later this year. The multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game was already short-listed as one of the official titles to be played. For people who work from 8 AM to 5 PM daily like Clifford Dela Paz and Jezeil Romero, Mobile Legends serves as one of their stress relievers. Dela Paz was one of the first Filipino players who witnessed its humble beginnings in 2016 while Romero discovered it in 2017. Both entered the game through the influence of their close friends. A casual gamer himself, Dela Paz didn’t expect Mobile Legends: Bang Bang to be a future esports title since it looks unconventional. “Parang ang hirap kasi niyang laruin kasi smartphone lang ang gamit mo. Walang typical na screen, keyboard, at
headset (It seemed like it was going to be difficult to play, since you’re stuck on a smartphone; there’s no typical screen, keyboard or headset.), “he stated. This admin staff regularly spends over 4 hours a day on the game while Romero, a graphic artist, plays about two hours daily. They both love to clash against other players in ranked mode and have reached Epic—the third-highest division in the game. Dela Paz currently holds an Legend V (level 12) account while Romero has an Epic II (level 9) account. Romero prefers Support and Tank-types such as Angela and Minotaur. Meanwhile, Dela Paz picks Fighter and Marksman heroes like Leomord and Moskov who stand out during clashes. When asked about her perception of Mobile Legends as a title that most females could play, Romero shared her thoughts without hesitation. “Mas madali kasi siyang laruin. Hindi sya complicated kagaya ng ibang games na na-encounter ko sa PC (It’s easy to play, and isn’t complicated like some other games I encounter on the PC). “

THE CONTROVERSY The road for Mobile Legends (ML) as an eSport was long and arduous. With their early success in China and some of SEA, the game got the attention of another eSports giant, League of Legends (LoL). Because of the striking similarities between the older Lol and ML, LoL developer Riot games sued ML’s developers for copyright infringement. The case was initially dropped because of a lack of jurisdiction. Based in Los Angeles, Riot sued Moontoon in a California court which has no power over the Chinese company. While the Riot case was dropped, their parent company Tencent could pursue legal action in China. The case was decided in 2018, and Chinese courts ordered Moontoon to pay 19.4 million Yuan to Tencent and Riot games for damages. Even with the win, it was reported that Tencent still had plans to sue Moontoon for other infringements. Despite the controversy and court case, ML persisted. There are now different ML tournaments in the country: the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Pro League (MPL), the Nationals, and recently Moontoon held the Southeast Asian championship in the country. THE RISE OF ML
IN ESPORTS
The Philippines has always been big for eSports in Southeast Asia. The country has already played host to a number of global eSports tournaments. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang’s rise as one of eSports’ biggest titles has been meteoric. The game came from obscurity and is now a part of the official lineup for the first-ever medal event for eSports at the Southeast Asian Games starting in November. According to eGG Network Philippines Chief of Operation Rommel Torres, the rise of mobile legends eSports in the country may be attributed

Team ArkAngel finished third at the recent MSC
to the success of other Filipino gamers in different titles. “During that time, that was the peak of TNC winning against OG in The International 6. I knew Filipinos wanted to have that same dream—lahat ng Pinoy (all the Filipinos) during that time,” Torres said. The thirst for glory and easy entry makes ML appealing to Filipinos, Torres notes. The accessibility of a smartphone app made ML readily available for the majority of Filipinos who would otherwise have needed separate hardware for other titles.
“When I saw ML, I saw the potential for Filipinos playing it while on break, especially in the Philippines, where the travel takes forever. Yung travel is 2-3 hours, and when you go on any mode of transportation, you see people playing ML,” said Torres. Among those who have tasted being on top in ML is team ArkAngel, who recently finished third in the Mobile Legends Southeast Asian Cup (MSC). The group is composed of team captain Jeff Franklin “Jeffqt4ever” Anaya, Ashley Marco “Killuash” Cruz, Allan Castro “Lusty” Mayor, Jason Rafael “Jay” Torculas, and Kyle “Ryo” Barceño.
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
The group bested some of Southeast Asia’s best ML pro teams at MSC, winning USD 15,133 or over PHP 780,000 in the process. The team also came close to reaching the finals but fell short against powerhouse Indonesian team Louvre Esports. But like most Filipinos, the team didn’t see ML growing to the phenomenon that it is now. “Nung una hindi kasi pang ano lang siya, pangpalipas oras lang talaga siya. Pag wala kang makalaro sa DoTA tapos pang palipas oras lang ang ML. Tapos may biglang unang tournament, MPC ba yun tapos sumunod yung MPL, tapos biglang sumikat yung ML sa Pilipinas, biglang nagboom so ayun. Hindi naman ineexpect na magkakaroon talaga ng pro players,” said Mayor. (At first we didn’ t think much of it because it was just a game we played to pass the time. If you didn’t have anyone to play with in Dota you would play it. Then there was one tournament, I think it was MPC, then came MPL, then ML suddenly became popular in the Philippines. I did not expect there would be pro players). What drove them try ML was their experience with MOBA’s such as DoTA 2 and LoL. “Yung larong Mobile Legends po kasi 5v5 MOBA talaga, lahat po kami pare-parehas kaming naglalaro ng DoTA before. Tapos parang sabi namin mas madali maglaro sa phone kaysa pumunta pa sa computer shop. Tapos ayun sinubukan po namin. Sa sarili ko po, nakita ko na mas convenient siya, kaya ayun na lang nilaro ko sa bahay,” said Torculas. (Mobile Legends is 5v5 MOBA, and we were all DOTA players before. We then realized it was easier to play on the phone rather than go to the computer shop. We tried it, and found it was more convenient, so that’s what played at home) According to the players, the current team was formed after the sudden rise of ML. The team found immediate success, winning the third season of the MPL and now placing third at the MSC. The group is now setting its eyes on defending its title in the fourth season of the MPL, as well as preparing for a domestic title defense. The group is also preparing for the

Mobile Legends World Cup coming this November. More and more people are now watching and joining in the conversation of eSports. In the mid-2000s and early 2010s, eSports events were mostly groups of enthusiasts getting together for small and intimate tournaments and a bit of socializing. But when developers and investors started giving money, the landscape of eSports changed. Prize money was getting bigger, and more and more people started going to the events. Esports tournaments are now the next big sporting event. Tens of thousands flock to arenas just to get a glimpse of their favorite team or player do their thing. eSports organizers had to change their approach in order to keep the teams and audiences happy. This meant holding tournaments that were closer in scale to concerts or conventional sporting events. Organizing Mobile Legends tournaments is much like organizing any other eSports tournament notes Torres. You have to have logistics, lodging, equipment, and food for the teams, while a great venue is needed to satisfy the audiences. What makes ML different from other eSports in the country, is how it’s marketed. Unlike DoTA and LoL, ML is a relative new-comer. “Professionalizing ML, kasi (because) ML players are very casual, they don’t wanna spend time and watch. There’s MPL and there are certain leagues that people watch. They know certain players and certain teams that they invest their time with. That’s why the branding is very important,“ said Torres. He adds that unlike DoTA which mostly has a team with players of different nationalities, ML is marketed the other way focusing on nation versus nation. The recent MSC is the perfect example of this with teams from Southeast Asia duking it out on the fields of the Land of Dawn. Teams were presented as representatives of a country and not as a team. “We focus ML in countries. That the main story of MSC is the country’s (Philippines) defending the championship and all,” Torres said.
The immediate future of Mobile Legends in the eSports scene is bright. Just this July, Moontoon announced an ML World Cup scheduled for November this year. The ML World Cup will be the first worldwide competition for ML and could be the defining tournament for the game, like The International for DoTA 2 or Worlds for League of Legends. All big esports names have their own culminating tournament every year. The ML World Cup could help Mobile Legends achieve worldwide recognition. Going back to SEA and In Indonesia, the fourth season of the MPL will achieve what most esports titles could only dream of, franchising. Their league will be the first SEA a feat once only reserved for some of eSports greatest title such League of Legends and Overwatch. Franchising means that players and teams will be able to earn a steady income from the revenue of the league itself. The new franchising system will also remove relegation among the teams participating, meaning teams part of the league will never be removed from their spot. With teams secured in the league, investors could also come and grow the team itself. With the SEA Games and the ML World Cup coming in the next few months, ML fans have a lot to look forward to. but aside from the tournaments, the constant content updates are also a good sign that Moontoon is investing its time to improve the game be it in new content or balance update. However the greatest thing ML has offered is the chance to break boundaries between generations. “If you went to MSC or the MPL games, Fathers showed up with their kids to watch the game--that’s very important for me. It’s very engaging, because before it was very hard to connect with your child, like my dad during my time, we just watched PBA. That wasn’t the case for my other brothers as they’re not really athletic so they couldn’t relate. So I have friends that have kids already, so they bond playing the game, which really is why there are games int he first palce,” said Torres.

During the 90s, Mario Kart was the game of choice when it came to cartoon racing games. While there were many challengers, such as Sonic Drift for the Sega Game Gear and Mickey’s Racing Adventure for the Game Boy Color, everyone mostly played Mario Kart. Sony’s answer to the Nintendo juggernaut was Crash Team Racing, which originally came out in 1999. Twenty years later, we get a remake called Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, which follows in the footsteps of the 2017-2018 releases of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, the remake of the platformer trilogy. Nitro-Fueled also includes content from the 2003 game Crash Nitro Kart and the 2005 game Crash Tag Team Racing.

The plot revolves around a new villain named Nitros Oxide, who wants to challenge the world’s greatest racers. If Oxide wins, he will turn the Earth into a parking lot. It’s up to Crash and the characters of the Crash Bandicoot universe to stop him from achieving his goal. The racing game is typical in its execution: the first to get to the finish line wins. You’re also tasked with competing against other drivers. You can pick up power-ups to boost yourself or weapons to charge ahead at the expense of others on the track. There are five modes that carry over from the original game: adventure, time trial, arcade, versus, and battle. The first four modes are race modes, while the fifth mode pits you against several other players in a battle mode where you can score points by eliminating enemy racers. The original 31 tracks from Crash Team Racing and Crash Nitro Kart are available in the game. In Nitro-Fueled, there is online multiplayer and the
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
ability to choose different karts that the player can customize. Therefore, you can compete with other players around the world. Many remakes of games are getting the face-lift of online multiplayer and it is near impossible to avoid. The power slide, one of the most important aspects to master in the game, felt natural despite not playing it for over two decades. The game also has a higher learning curve (especially if you’re doing the CTR Challenges). For those who have played the original game or are racing game veterans, the transition should be seamless, but for those new to the game (and genre) might find themselves playing catch-up. Only 8 characters are available at launch. To unlock more characters, karts, and customization items, you have to play through adventure mode and complete challenges. This lets you earn Wumpa Coins. Those who want to unlock
characters available in Crash Nitro Kart will have to purchase them via the Pit Stop. There are also Grand Prix events where players can take on challenges to unlock new characters. Some of the unlockable characters include Tawna from the first Crash Bandicoot game, baby Crash and Coco, and even Spyro the Dragon, who appeared on the Game Boy Advance version of Nitro Kart. For people who want additional nostalgia, you can even unlock polygon versions of Crash, Coco, and Neo Cortex (the antagonist of the series), as well as low-poly karts and a retro-themed bonus track. Nitro-Fueled is a great change of pace if you’re looking for a racing game you can pick up and play, but can be more difficult than Mario Kart. There is enough content to unlock that will keep the replay value sky-high even months after the release, and I would recommend this for racing game fans or people who want another quality game to add to their consoles.

Before I entered the fun world of tech journalism, my mom had immersed me in literature, particularly during my childhood years. Through reading, I was able to travel to different places, and by far one of the most memorable was the magical world of The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. If you were to ask me if I’m one of those girls still hoping to get their Hogwarts letter, you would get a resounding “yes.” So when I stumbled upon the latest Harry Potter mobile game in the app store, installing it was a no-brainer.
LIVE LIKE A WIZARD In a nutshell, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an augmented reality (AR) game that puts players in the fantasy world of the Harry Potter books. Co-developed by Niantic and Warner Bros. Games of San Francisco under Portkey Games (a game division dedicated to creating games inspired by J.K. Rowling’s original stories), Wizards Unite requires you to get up and walk around in the real world, but interact with characters, collect magical ingredients, brew potions, and fight dark wizards through augmented reality. It’s pretty similar to Pokémon GO, but instead

of catching ‘em all, you get “traces of magic” around your neighborhood. Set in a post-Deathly Hallows timeline, Potterheads now have the chance to fulfill their dream as wizards and witches. They are tasked by the Ministry of Magic, together with the International Confederation of Wizards, to investigate an unusual phenomenon called The Calamity that threatens to tear down the wall between Muggles and magic. You’ll need to prepare your most comfortable footwear, though. This title will actually motivate you
to move around and walk, even if you are a couch potato. Freeing up some space on your phone will also help since it eats up about 200 MB of storage. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite requires an internet connection. You may use mobile data, but we highly recommend to connect to a stable Wi-Fi connection for a smoother and more immersive experience. Players can also personalize their Ministry ID which serves as the official member badge of the Statute of Secrecy (SOS) Task Force. This includes their avatar, name, title, profession, wizarding achievements, and wand specifications.
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
YOUR DICTIONARY TO THE WIZARDING WORLD Getting everything you can out of a game as complex as this one can be tricky, so you have to know some terms before you start. Your main goal as an SOS Task Force officer is to prevent the magic of the Wizarding World from bleeding into the Muggle world, and you do this by finding things called Foundables from the World Map. These are special magical creatures, characters, memories, and items from various timelines of the Wizarding World that you encounter on the map. To gather Foundables, you need to tap the small floating discs with different symbols on the map called Traces. Some Foundables are guarded by various Confoundables that can be defeated by casting a spell, done by tracing the corresponding glyph on your device’s screen. In gathering Foundables successfully, accuracy and speed is the key. Foundables vary in difficulty and type. Hunting Foundables starts by lining up an AR reticle to lock on to the target. Specific potions boost your performance in either fighting foes in Inns or
is where you can buy all your wizardry needs. You can either shop the best deals to get the most of your collected gold, find tools to become a topnotch Task Force member, fill your purse, or get potions as well as indispensable ingredients that you can use in interacting with Confoundables. Portkey Portmanteaus, meanwhile, are locked, muggle-proof trunks that contain Portkeys which transport you to different locations within the wizarding world. Once they reach a certain level, players will have to choose three different professions that unlock unique skills and abilities: Auror, Magizoologist, and Professor. Aurors like Harry Potter are trained to defeat Dark Forces; Magizoologists like Newt Scamander are strong against Beasts; while Professors like Filius Flitwick and Minerva McGonagall can duel Curiosities. Players from different professions are encouraged to work together to defeat Wizarding Challenges and unlock rare content.
RECENT UPDATES At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Niantic announced the first-ever Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Festival in Indianapolis. Along with this announcement, the Pokémon GO developers also shared that iconic dragons in the Harry Potter franchise, from the Common Welsh Green to Antipodean Opaleye, are on their way to the game. However, it will only be available in certain regions. Players will also soon be able to record their walking distances even without running the app. Augmented reality games such as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite create an entirely different experience. Its little details make it distinct from, but still comfortingly similar to Niantic’s Pokémon GO. The game may receive a lot of criticism due to comparisons to Pokemon Go, but one thing is definitely sure: it offers a more fantastical setting that every aspiring Hogwarts student dreams to experience.
Confoundables. Foundables, when collected, go directly to Registry (Ministry of Magic’s own record of Foundables that you have returned). Rewards are earned through finding Traces on the map, returning the Foundables, and unlocking Treasure Trunks. You will see landmarks like Inns (a real-world location for refilling Spell Energy, a primary resource in the game to cast spells), Fortresses (where players can combat with other fellow wizards and complete challenges), and Greenhouses (a breeding place for potion ingredients). Some ingredients can also be collected within distinct biomes. Players can also brew different potions according to their needs during various weather conditions. Your valuables can be stored in a Vault. Here, you can review the inventory of potions, dark detectors, and other wizard tools of the trade. Its space is usually limited, but you can expand its capacity to accommodate your growing cache of supplies through Diagon Alley. The said in-app market store

Another neat feature is the pay-out option where the seller can keep track of his/her payments for the week and when they will be received. Should any questions arise, there’s a handy FAQ menu that contains answers to the basic problems as well as some technical ones. Lastly, SureTayo is adding a Rewards menu where promos and other special offers will be placed.
these are what we call the informal economy, the people who sell on Instagram, Facebook. The setup is quite different and the challenge is the buyers don’t really know who they are. There are a lot of bogus sellers out there and as well as a lot of bogus buyers. So we came up with a solution to cater to this individual market and we call it SureTayo,” said Robertson Chiang, founder and Chief Technology Officer, Dragonpay. SureTayo was initially launched as a website only platform in 2018. According to Chiang, they were not entirely sure of an app at launch but after listening to customer feedback they have acknowledged the need for a mobile app.
The app also makes it easier for buyers to make payments. After a seller sends the invoice, the app will notify the buyer via SMS. A link is provided in the message which buyers could use to direct them to any Dragonpay accredited payment method.
“At first we wanted to go through the traditional web application because we felt it was safer. You don’t have to maintain an Android app or an iOS app because, in theory, a webpage can render in any device. But what we found out that people who are really on-the-go, they prefer the app eh. It doesn’t have to render and keep going back to the server back and forth for the display. But the app doesn’t go through, it’s really snappy and it’s really designed for the form factor of your phone,” Chiang said.
“We have always recognized that there is a very large market for individual sellers. So
Also present at the launch was actress and online seller Nikki Valdez who is also a user of the app.

“As seen earlier on the video it’s very easy because I don’t have the online invoice order whereas here there is,” said Valdez. Valdez owns an online bakeshop where she sells pastries and customized cakes. “I just send the details and price lists of the cakes and (using the app) they just send me the details. I will make the invoice and send it to them through the order option, and then it is returned to me with all their info,” she adds. The Sure Tayo app now available for free in both the Google Playstore and Apple App Store. AUGUST 2019

Smart 5G alliance aims to accelerate tech innovations in PH
The 5G alliance is sealed by Smart Communications chairman and CEO Manuel Pangilinan (3rd from left) and Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins (4th from left).
Over the past few months, Smart Communications (Smart) has been gradually pushing its 5G efforts through partnerships with various technology companies for different use cases. At the Philippine Digital Convention held last month, PLDT Enterprise formally announced its Smart 5G Alliance composed of global tech leaders and local stakeholders across the business, government and academe sectors. This alliance is envisioned as an accelerator for 5G innovations within the Philippine setting. A few months ago, Smart officially introduced Ericsson as its partner in powering up the industrial use of 5G at the Clark Economic Zone. The subsequent launches saw the introduction of Huawei as its partner in the roll-out of the technology in the Makati Central Business District; Nokia for the education sector; and Cisco to improve transportation in the country. Since November of last year, PLDT-Smart has powered up 5G sites across Luzon, namely at the Clark Freeport Zone, Makati Central Business District, the Ateneo de Manila University, and as of late, the Araneta Center in Cubao. The formal announcement at the Philippine Digital Convention 2019 sealed the firm’s efforts in providing industries—and soon consumers— the speed and scalability of 5G technology. “Our strategy of developing use cases across verticals aims to leverage on the capabilities of 5G such as enhanced mobile broadband speeds, ultra-low latency, and network intelligence—to further boost the capacity of local industries,”
Smart fires up 5G at Clark Freeport Economic Zone.
said Jojo Gendrano, FVP and head of Enterprise Core Business Solutions, PLDT, in a media statement. He also stressed that while the core of the hype on 5G is all about speed, scale and reliability are notable benefits the technology can provide. Last year, Smart and PLDT fired up 5G cell sites to signal the entry to offering 5G-powered digital services. “We want to find out the right way to do 5G in the Philippines because 5G is different from any of the past technologies, 2G, 3G and 4G. 5G will provide a more flexible and powerful platform for more compelling and relevant services,” said Joachim Horn, chief technology and information advisor, PLDT-Smart, in previous launches. He also stressed the reason Smart is focusing on offering 5G, initially, to enterprise customers.
“Our focus for future 5G services is initially for Enterprise customers, for whom it will mean completely new use cases, like with drones, Internet of Things and other specialized services, for example. These services can utilize 5G’s capabilities like low latency, very high resilience and very high reliability,” he said. Pioneering members of the 5G Alliance include Cisco, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Microsoft, Nokia, Palo Alto, SMS Global Technologies, Araneta Center, the Ateneo de Manila University, and the Clark Development Corporation. “We remain committed to growing the 5G alliance so that we may bring the network’s use cases across platforms, in the hope that this will bring real value to the Filipino public,” said SVP & Head of PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups Jovy Hernandez.

According to the report of the International Data Corp. (IDC), the global shipments of wearable devices are expected to reach 222.9 million units this year and will increase to 302.3 million units in 2023. Behind that growth is the propagation of smartwatches and ear-worn devices, which will account for more than 70 percent of all wearable shipments by 2023, according to IDC’s Worldwide QuarterlyWearable Device Tracker. “Not only is the market diversifying in terms of form factors, but it is also diversifying in terms of connectivity and distribution,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager, IDC’s Mobile Device Trackers. “Among all watches, close to half will have the ability to connect to a cellular network by 2023 as consumers along with enterprises and healthcare look to free the watch from the phone and as telcos push forward subsidies or financing options for watches with cellular service.” “In addition to the proliferation of devices is the expansion of wearables use cases,” said Ramon Llamas, research director for IDC’s wearables team. “Smartwatches, as always, will still tell you the time, but will move deeper into health and fitness and connect with multiple applications and systems, both at work and within the home. Ear-worn devices, while still centered on providing audio, will nudge into other areas like language translation, smart assistant deployment, and coaching.”

PHISHING EXPEDITION
WAYS TO RECOGNIZE PHISHING AND HOW TO AVOID IT Words by Marlet D. Salazar | Infographic by Chini Soriano
Phishing is perhaps one of the oldest — and most effective — cyberattacks that has been unleashed upon humankind. Cybercriminals use email to trick recipients to click on a link that will lead them to websites. These websites may contain malicious software that may infect users’ computers or may collect data from the email recipient.
This infographic dissects how criminal hackers victimize unsuspecting users by making them believe they are clicking on legitimate websites through an email sent using bogus email addresses and often using popular brand names as bait.

2 User clicks on the link
IF MALWARE IS DOWNLOADED
a. Link may contain malicious software (malware) that can infect and harvest data from computer b. User willingly hands over information such as credit card details
a. Malware will infect the computer or network and criminals may either delete all sensitive files and hold them ransom b. Malware may wipe all corporate data from network
Email sent asking to: a. Update profile and contact details b. Join contests

What is Netflix’s secret sauce for success? How the streaming giant disrupted — and dominated — the industry Words by Nicole Batac
You don’t have to be subscribed to Netflix to know what the company offers. It has lorded over the video streaming space since it switched gears from a DVD rental service back in 2007. It’s now available in over 190 countries with around 148 million paid subscribers. Netflix is untouchable—for the time being. The likes of Disney and Apple are breathing down its neck and are gearing up to steal its crown. But we can’t discount what Netflix has done for video streaming, and how it’s managed to stay ahead of its competition for so long. What is the company’s secret? We can say that it isn’t just one thing.
House of Cards is Netflix’s first self-commissioned original content series released in 2013. It had its final season in 2018.
The people Netflix has a self-proclaimed “unusual employee culture.” Netflix’s former chief talent officer Patty McCord and her team wrote the now-classic document “Netflix Culture: Freedom & Responsibility,” which you can now read on the company’s job site. It describes things like how Netflix is always on the hunt for the best people. Innovation is at the heart of the company, and it wants every employee to be involved. McCord was once quoted in an interview saying, “Most of the innovation around the culture at Netflix wasn’t to
do anything radical and new but to stop doing stuff that didn’t matter anymore.” Netflix is a company that isn’t afraid of failure if there are lessons to be learned. Chairman and CEO Reed Hastings said before, “We’re in a creative-inventive market, not a safety-critical market like medicine or nuclear power. You may have heard preventing error is cheaper than fixing it—yes in manufacturing or medicine, but not so in creative environments.”
The tech Foresight and luck are involved in Netflix’s rise. When it started to shift to video streaming from renting out DVDs, the company was at the right place at the right time. Video streaming speed and reliability increased as viewing devices became cheaper and ubiquitous. Advances in video compression technology in the early 2000s also meant it was easier to stream large video files over the internet. This also demonstrated that from the tech side, Netflix knew what it was doing. We’ve heard Netflix describe itself as a tech company. And it’s continuously worked on getting the tech behind its service right. At its Los Gatos
76
AUGUST 2019
offices, the company has cell tower equipment to help its team test its app running on mobile devices under different mobile or Wi-Fi conditions available around the world. It’s done everything from simply adding the Netflix button to smart TV remotes to encourage users to check out the app, to optimizing its videos for mobile viewing, to learning to deal with outages early on. The company uses Amazon’s AWS data centers across three regions. When one of these regions goes down, Netflix automatically redirects its traffic to the two other regions. The company even purposefully takes a region offline occasionally for testing purposes.
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
The subscribers It’s no secret that Netflix leverages subscriber data to help improve its service. Distributing online allows them to gather large amounts of data on subscribers. This, in turn, helps it provide content that would appeal to its global audience. It doesn’t say what they collect, but it has been a useful tool to make sure the company is serving varied interests. And with its innovation-centric mindset, the company is known to scale up ideas that work. On top of that, the company likes to conduct in-person interviews with members as well as people who haven’t subscribed yet to find out what they think about the service and the shows.
But it doesn’t stop at gathering data from within the app and from talking directly to its customers, Netflix uses social media to help gauge response to its content. Twitter is a useful tool to discover the public’s reaction to shows. According to CNBC, new Netflix shows get 30% more mentions on Twitter when compared to new cable television shows. And the service can be used to gauge future success or cancellation of its original programs. Shows like Sense 8 and The Get Down exhibited declines in social media activity ahead of getting canceled. The service responds to what the public says (or doesn’t say, in this case).
The content The information Netflix gathers from its users help dictate how the service evolves the content it offers. And so far, it has its competition beat with the depth and breadth of what it offers. You get the splashy, attention-grabbing originals mixed with some classic and popular shows and films. Recently, we’re seeing the increase of localized content as well, which is where Netflix is placing a lot of its hopes in the future.
After years and years of being in the business, it has built a substantial library that you might never know the depths of. And with the nature of the business, the service loses and gains rights to stream shows and films for a prescribed number of years. This might be bad for those who love re-watching their favorites, but it’s good for ushering in fresh content and keeping subscribers locked in.
The internet distribution model allows Netflix to serve different audiences and interests simultaneously and separately. The company isn’t tied to the traditional TV distribution model, allowing them to try out different formats, delve into varied subject matters, and change up how to distribute its content.
The company has said before it aims to have half of its library to be shows and films made exclusively for the company. It was last reported to have spent around US$12 billion on new content. And it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they spend more in the coming years, especially with competition looming.
Netflix has harnessed its strengths to maintain its hold on the market. But it must continue to develop compelling, exclusive material to keep subscribers interested. It needs to make sure that the tech remains reliable. And that it has the right team that knows how to address the needs of its base. If they don’t deliver, then the company might lose its crown.

STAYING HEALTHY AT HOME WITH TECHNOLOGY Words by Gabriel Pe
The months of July and August usually bring the most unpredictable weather of the year. One minute we are all frying under the scorching sun, and the next we’re drowning in floodwater thanks to monsoon rains and typhoons. Thankfully the advancement of technology has created home appliances capable of preventing the spread of disease usually associated with the fickle weather. As part of their 2019 portfolio, Sharp Philippine Corporation released several new products to help keep us healthy, and keep our homes comfortable.
AIR PURIFIER
You might think of air purifiers as merely a novelty, and we don’t blame you. Years ago, the need for such a device was limited to a few specific cases. Fast forward to today, pollution has brought about different airborne irritants, and contaminants, so the need for an air purifier is clear, particularly if you have kids. Sharp has an air purifier fitted with a mosquito catcher. The air purifier uses Sharp’s Plasmacluster ion technology which emits positive and negative ions to neutralize any airborne mold, viruses, bacteria, and allergens. The mosquito catcher works by using UV light to attract mosquitos, while an air inlet sucks the mosquitos into the machine where they are trapped on a glue sheet. Aside from mosquito catchers, Sharp’s air purifier also has a HEPA filter which captures particles as tiny as 0.3 micron.

HEALSIO HOTCOOK
REFRIGERATORS
A healthy diet is vital in maintaining one’s health, and Sharp has introduced a new health directed cooking appliances line called the Healsio.
Apart from the airborne threats, a more effective way to prevent disease is through food safety and healthy eating. Refrigerators are at the forefront of food safety. A great refrigerator fights the spread of bacteria in our food. Sharp’s latest refrigerator line-up has their Plasmacluster Ion technology built-in, preventing any virus from spreading to our foods. It also has silver and copper nano deodorizing technology to keep your refrigerator smelling fresh.
The Healsio Hotcook is a waterless automatic cooker that uses the ingredients’ own moisture to cook. This gives any meal a much deeper flavor. It has an automatic stirring unit capable of 100 plus different cooking methods. It also has an automatic temperature control to prevent any burned foods.
HEALSIO VACUUM BLENDER The second Healsio product is the Vacuum Blender that creates a vacuum in the blending compartment. Vacuum blending reduces oxidation inside the compartment, thus, giving whatever you juiced a longer shelf life. It could also produce better tasting juices and it preserves nutrients that would otherwise be diluted by air.
MITE CATCHER While not entirely new for 2019, Sharp’s mite catcher is definitely one to look for. Mites usually feed off dead skin and blood and have a life cycle of a few months. They also carry a multitude of viruses and diseases. Sharp’s mite catcher is a small vacuum cleaner that has their Plasmacluster Ion technology and has a built-in heater that automatically kills any mites that it catches.
AIR CONDITIONER Air conditioners with built-in air purifiers have started to flood the market since their release early in the decade. Sharp’s latest super-premium inverter type air conditioners have the same Plasmacluster Ion technology as their air purifiers, and have their own IoT technology for a more pleasant user experience. You could connect your air conditioner and air purifier with Sharp’s Air Purifier mobile app for mobile control of your appliances.
RACTIVE AIR VACUUM CLEANER
The best way to keep healthy is with a clean environment. Sharp’s Ractive air is a cordless ultra-lightweight stick-type vacuum cleaner coming in at only 1.5 kg. It has different modes and has a turbo fan motor with cyclone technology.

TRAVEL
A Paradise called Bali You don’t have to spend a fortune to marvel at this beautiful island Words by Paula Candoy | Photos by Ayra Salvador
Before “Instagram-worthy” became a thing, was place whose photos made my heart skip a beat. The greens of this tropical paradise and how they blend with the colors of the sunset is remarkably breathtaking. It was that natural beauty that piqued my interest, and made the destination a constant topic among friends. The endless talk led to dreaming, and the dreaming became planning, until finally, we found ourselves aboard a budget-friendly airline that would take us to Bali, Indonesia.
My friends and I created an itinerary that would appeal not only to those who have limited resources but also to those who want to make the most of their stay. A four-hour plane ride from Manila took us to Denpasar International Airport, where we went straight to the foreign exchange counter. To our delight, the exchange rate when we arrived was at 1IDR = 0.0037PHP. While we’re talking about budget-friendly, allow yourself to spend a bit on Grab, instead of taking a cab, to save yourself the stress and harassment that can come from having to deal with the occasional bad taxi. We were a group of seven people so it was definitely more practical to book a villa. The first villa that we booked was in Kuta; the nearest town from the airport, making it one of the most accessible places in Bali. We also learned that Kuta
80
AUGUST 2019
is perfect for night owls like us, who are always ready for a bit of bar-hopping. Right after checking in, we immediately got down to business and paid a visit to Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, one of the biggest and tallest statues in the world. We rented bikes to get around the vast park that offered breathtaking scenery that I realized, really is good for the soul. The Uluwatu Temple gave us perhaps the most stunning views of the waves crashing on the side of a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. It would have been the perfect place to shoot a dramatic movie scene with an appropriate epic score. For sunset-stalkers, pay a visit around 5 p.m. and wait until the changing colors of the sky, and the quiet blanket of night turn you into a whole different person. Let me snap you back to the real world for a moment though. Be wary of monkeys at the
temple. They are attention-seekers who will take any opportunity to grab your belongings and disturb you from your quiet soul-searching. If you still have time to spare, I suggest you pay a small fee, and watch a Kecak dance performance at the amphitheater to cap off your day. We opted for the Nusa Penida Island Tour on the second day. The island in the southeast of Bali appealed to us simply because it remains unspoiled. We strongly recommend pre-booking the tour to save time and make the most of your vacation. Nusa Penida can be reached through the Sanur Port, which we got to by booking a Grab. The 30-45-minute boat ride from the port thoroughly built up the excitement and anticipation, and the destination did not disappoint. The sheer size of the island overwhelmed us but we were more excited to see Kelingking Beach. We were sad

we didn’t get to take a dip in the water, as there was so much yet to visit, but the visit was still worth it for the famous T-Rex-shaped cliff that draws visitors in from all over. Our thirst for Bali’s beautiful scenery was also met with a thirst for fruit shakes, which was quickly satisfied at Angel’s Billabong.
(about PHP 700) Make sure you snap a photo to immortalize the memory, and don’t miss out on the free tea and coffee tasting just after the snapshot.
A visit to Bali must always be marked with swimming at Crystal Bay, and its clear, cool water perfect for the summer weather. A trip to Bali wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Ubud. We left Kuta for Ubud Villas--a famous tourist spot in upland Bali that is surrounded by rainforests and rice terrace, with a side trip to Uma Pake where the people in charge gave free tours for tourists. The Bali Swing and Nest is famous for a good reason. We had to try it out for 200,000 IDR
You might be thinking that all rice terraces look the same. We have our own up north in the Philippines, but since we were in Indonesia already, we just had to see the difference. While the terraces themselves are roughly the same, the experience was one all its own. The Tegallalang Rice Terracesare vast and photogenic, and instead of an entrance fee, the caretakers accept donations. For our trip, we decided to save the best for last. A stay at Seminyak Villa allowed us to experience the nightlife at Bali and have a bit of a food trip. We had our lunch at The Beat Cafe, which offers a variety of international cuisine for a reasonable

price. I ordered Nasi Ayam,a chicken and rice dish, which was excellent. Dessert was courtesy of Kynd Community, which has become a favorite destination because of its IG-ready interior, and their superb vegan ice cream. We made the most of the villa stay by just chilling and reminiscing over the events of the previous days. I have to say that the villas in Bali are super worth it especially if you travel in groups. Just find your price range on Airbnb. Based on that quick trip to Bali, I realized that even a lifetime wouldn’t be enough to fully experience the beauty of a paradise such as Bali. If you are a first-timer like me, who has plans of going back, you can try out our itinerary, which I can assure you is budget-friendly. We managed to pull if off with just PHP 15,000!

prowess, which makes the songs hit hard. As far as music is concerned, I favor sadder tracks, and while it’s not a downer on the whole, it’s more a stay-home-on-a-rainy-day kind of album, which I love. Favorite Track From that Album: It’s got to be the title track, Grace. It’s a Buckley tour de force. On display is his skill as a lyricist, singer, and a bit of his guitar chops as well. It’s also not super sad, but full of emotion. If all you know of Buckley is his cover of Hallelujah, give this a listen.
Favorite Album: Limasawa Street. The album showed the diversity of genres that the band can play. It goes from upbeat to simple acoustics backed up by strong vocals just like Araw-Araw and Leaves. Favorite Track From that Album: Araw-Araw’s message brought me to tears when I first heard it. Should the right guy and the right time come, it will be the song for my walk down the aisle.

Favorite Album: The beats of all the tracks in Avīci (01) absolutely eargasmic.
Favorite Artist: Avicii was the artist that introduced me to the house/electronic genre. I love his beats and sometimes, even the lyrics that accompany his songs. May he rest in peace.

It is our hope that you will believe in them as much as we do, and that you will champion them as only each of you can,” said Roslyn Pineda, VP for artist relations and business development, Sony Music Entertainment Asia. “Being part of the Sony Music Regional team I would get calls from my colleagues from other 84

countries saying, ‘Roslyn what is Hugot?’, as many of you know that is one of the top playlists on Spotify. Another question that I got is, ‘Why is Quezon City, the No. 1 city outside my artist’s home city?’ So this is all part and parcel of the current global fascination of Asia. It is a region of incredible growth and potential. As they say, it’s the Asian century, and the talent here in the Philippines is just as incredible.” Also present at the launch event was Ariel Fung, executive vice president, Sony Music Entertainment Asia. “I think everybody knows that the Philippines is an up and coming market, and especially with the current digital growth of the market here and this is the particular reason why we’re here. Denis is really keen on signing up and growing local artists from every market and definitely the Philippines is one of the markets and this is what we are doing here today, and I am so happy to witness the first group of artist that we are signing from the Philippines,” said Fung. Fung also noted he hopes that the latest batch of artists will not only be promoted in the country but as well as in the rest of the region. He also

Digital leadership expert ‘Equalman’ headlines PLDT Digicon 2019
Erik Qualman shared his insights on the effects of digitization on business.
Digital leadership expert and No. 1 bestselling author Erik Qualman (Equalman) headlined the Philippine Digital Convention 2019, which gathered together renowned thought leaders and key stakeholders last July 18-19 at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City. A frequently requested speaker of the Fortune 500, Erik, who is also known as Equalman, has helped organizations understand how digitization has transformed and disrupted traditional business models. “Digital leaders are made, they not born,” said Equalman. “At the end of the day, when you look at digital transformation at the core, it’s all about relationships.” Formerly a sitting professor at Harvard and MIT’s edX labs, Equalman’s books are used in over 200 universities. The most popular title among his works, “Digital Leader,” made him the second most likable author in the world, just a spot behind Harry Potter’s J.K. Rowling. “When it comes to digital leadership, it’s not what we take from the world, it’s what we leave behind,” he said. As in past years, this year’s Digicon aimed to give guests a first-hand experience on how the ground-breaking solutions of today and

innovative concepts of tomorrow can be used as the enterprises’ edge on the future. The two-day event kicked off with a digital expo, aptly referred to as the Digital Grounds Tour, which featured an unprecedented take on digital evolution. Following the said exhibit was the convention’s plenary session, headlined by Equalman as well as other tech and business leaders.
For his part, Equalman, who is listed by Forbes and Fortune as a Top 100 Digital Influencer, delivered a presentation focused on digital leadership and innovation. On the second day of the event, guests had the opportunity to participate in a series of deepdive workshops across verticals conducted by industry mavens and expert analysts.

YouTube shows off partnerships with first-ever Brandcast event Online video colossus YouTube highlighted the importance of partnerships, and the changing media landscape with the first-ever Brandcast event. Brandcast gave guests an idea of the current consumer trends that drive media consumption and viewership. Gone are the days where people are tied exclusively to the TV for their shows, and entertainment in general. With smartphone penetration in the Philippines at a staggering 70 percent, the way we consume content is changing. Filipino YouTube viewers increasingly customize their viewing, with each person watching more videos that are in-tune with their own personal interests and needs. This has led to the disappearance of what we had come to know as primetime viewership, and given way to a more on-demand viewing trend. One of the fastest-growing global YouTube markets, the Philippines has seen spectacular growth in users–both on the side of creators and viewers, since their first strong local push in 2016. There are now more than 750 channels with more than 100,000 subscribers, and over 20 media channels with more than one millions subscribers.
Helping make those numbers possible are YouTube’s industry partners. Smart Communications launched a free YouTube campaign in 2018. Free YouTube Every Day gave subscribers an hour of free YouTube access daily, and the results were nothing short of amazing. The campaign saw an twofold increase in mobile data, and a 62 percent revenue increase for yearon-year mobile revenue. Cebu Pacific also leveraged YouTube to grow their business. When they debuted the Super Seat Fest 3.3 Sale campaign earlier this year, they used digital media; YouTube included, to engage its target market, inform them of their new timed approach to destination sales, and ultimately boost seat sales three times over previous efforts. Broadcast giants ABS-CBN and GMA have taken to embracing YouTube as a partner as well. Instead of seeing online streaming as competition, they worked together to make content accessible to viewers, even reaching those who normally would no longer watch broadcast TV. Now, viewers can catch up on shows that they missed without having to wait for reruns, all according to their own schedules, on their own smart devices. This

put them in the top 50 YouTube channels globally. Only five channels in the SEA region are in that elite group, and the Philippines bagged two spots.
Opening of Cavitex C5 Link Flyover expected to ease travel time Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar recently announced the opning of the first section of the Cavitex C5 Southlink—a 2.2-kilometer flyover crossing South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) traversing Taguig and Pasay City. “We are supportive of road engineering solutions for everyday problems. This is a vital project that will cut travel time in half from the usual 1.5 hours spent to cross from Villamor Airbase, Pasay area to Taguig City. With three lanes in each direction of this flyover, passage of the anticipated 8,000 vehicles will be eased when they use the flyover,” announced Secretary Villar. The PHP 1.6-billion C5 Link flyover is now accessible to vehicles plying between Fort Bonifacio, C.P. Garcia (C5), Taguig City, Parañaque City, Las Piñas City, and Pasay City. The alignment features the bridge that crosses Metro Manila Skyway (at-grade) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). The C5 Link flyover is expected to reduce vehicular traffic in Sales interchange near Villamor Airbase. The flyover is also expected to decongest SLEX East and West Service Roads and EDSA.
A promise of a better and more efficient road network awaits motorists and residents of neighboring cities when the 7.7-kilometer C5 Link Expressway comes to its full completion.
This is the second public-private partnership with Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation to open this year following the successful completion of the NLEX Harbor Link Segment 10 in February 2019.

HP Ink Tank proves superior in print quality, installation over other brands A study conducted by Keypoint IntelligenceBuyers Lab (BLI) proves that HP Ink Tank printers produce superior print image quality compared to inkjet models from other competitive brands. In a comparative image quality evaluation, BLI used its proprietary image quality test targets to compare printed images produced using the HP Ink Tank printer and inkjet printers from other leading brands. It tested the color and black prints and copies in default mode to compare the color density and visual quality. The tests reveal that HP Ink Tank printers deliver vibrant colors not only with images but also with text, even in draft mode. The lines are smoother without a tiny speck of rough edges, the fine details are clear, and the colors are brighter than the others. Using the copy mode also yielded similar results. HP Ink Tank printers can print up to 8,000 color or 6,000 black pages. HP’s prints do not fade quickly and HP-printed documents can last up to 22 times longer than others. HP Ink Tank also proved advantageous over other printers in terms of setup and installation,
especially with ink refill. The ink tanks and refill bottles are designed to avoid spills. The bottles have an easy grip and the tank holes are wide enough to avoid any spillage. The bottle cap also serves as protection for an ink spill. Just remove the caps on the printer and place the bottles
upside down. There is no need to squeeze the bottle which is sometimes the cause of the mess. With fewer components, HP Ink Tank is easy to set. Users can also print wirelessly from the smartphone app.

RELIC
MULTI-USER DUNGEON Words by Jose Alvarez
Today, we can all interact with each other online through various methods such as text messaging, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, game distribution platforms such as Battle.net and Steam, and even in games such as World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and more. What started the phenomenon of online chatting and even served as a primitive MMO? The Multi-User Dungeon (MUD) was the precursor to many online multiplayer games and was also a primitive chat system. A typical MUD describes where you are, listing off objects, players, and non-player characters (NPCs) in the area and where the exits are. You enter commands via text, such as attack (creature here) or take (item here). You can also move north, south, east, or west to go to the next area. Will Crowther is credited with creating the first MUD, 1975’s Colossal Cave Adventure, on the DEC PDP-10 computer. This was essentially a computer version of the popular pen-and-paper game Dungeons & Dragons. The same year, many dungeon crawlers were created on the PLATO system, which was also the precursor to Internet forums, message boards, email, chat rooms, instant messaging, and multiplayer video games. Don Woods expanded on the game the following year. The game is more commonly known as Adventure. It contained references to D&D, including a computer-controlled dungeon master (DM). The late 1970s saw an explosion in the creation of MUDs all throughout the United States. One of the most important MUDs came out in 1977. A group of MIT students created another PDP-10 game called Zork, which became widely played on ARPANET (the precursor to the commercial Internet). Zork was ported to multiple programming languages throughout the 1970s, and by 1978, Roy Trubshaw created the eponymous Multi-User Dungeon as a tribute 92

to the Dungeon variant of Zork. He then handed off development to Richard Bartle in 1980. MUD basically allowed players to gain points to reach the rank of Wizard, the highest in the game. This gave the player special powers over mortals and could not be killed. MUD and other variants of the game ran on the local network at the University of Essex. Accessing JANET (the British academic X.25 computer network) allowed players to connect on weekends as well as between 2 am and 8 am on weekdays. MUD also had the distinction of being the first Internet multiplayer online role-playing game in 1980 because the university connected to ARPANET. Bartle had licensed the game to CompuServe (an early Internet service provider) and the original MUD game shut down in 1987. However, this did not stop the MUD from gaining popularity elsewhere in the world. In the United States, Alan E. Klietz developed Milieu in 1978. This MUD utilized Multi-Pascal on the CDC Cyber 6600 series mainframe. This was operated by the Minnesota Educational Computing
Consortium (better known as the developer of the original Oregon Trail). By 1983, Klietz ported it to the IBM XT and renamed it Scepter of Goth. Ten to sixteen users were supported connecting by modem. It was also the first commercial MUD and franchises were sold to other locations. In 1984, Mark Peterson developed The Realm of Angmar and rewrote it 10 years later for MS-DOS, calling it Swords of Chaos. Bulletin board systems (BBSes), a precursor to the commercial Internet, was the preferred way to connect to MUDs. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, PCs were able to display more complex graphics and the advent of the commercial Internet basically made MUDs obsolete. While graphical MUDs were available as early as 1985, games such as 1999’s EverQuest eventually took the place of MUDs by the late 1990s. At this time, the term massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) took the place of graphical MUDs. Many things you see in online communication (instant messaging, chat rooms, etc.) are all a result of MUDs and MMORPGs would have not existed were it not for the development of the initial MUDs. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
