THE PERFECT HOME THEATER WITHOUT THE HASSLE

Over the last couple of years, streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ have taken over as our go-to media. Their boundless library of movies and series is now our favorite way to kill time, before bedtime or to while away a lazy weekend afternoon. Streaming has gotten so big that even movie studios have realized its potential creating special content that’s readily accessible.

To fully enjoy an immersive cinematic experience, you’ll need some essentials. First a beefy internet connection, a high-resolution TV, and finally some banger audio. The first two requirements are pretty straightforward, but finding great audio is a whole other ball game.

In the olden days to create a great home theater you would need a whole load of speakers. You’ll have to calculate the size of the room and where the speakers will be positioned. Then you’ll have to mount and hang them to properly simulate the surround sound you hear in theaters. Worse of all, you’ll have to find a way to connect them, often with the wires looking like a mess… Of course, all these are in the past.

JBL SOUNDBARS ELEVATE YOUR HOME THEATER

The five new soundbars within the lineup all have 3D Surround sound thanks to Dolby Atmos®, while the JBL BAR 1300 and 1000 has additional DTS:X support. This new lineup features Multibeam technology for even better 3D Surround sound capabilities. Multibeam is JBL and Harman’s proprietary tech that basically uses an angled speaker array within the soundbar to “beam” sound to your walls and create the 3D Surround sound.

Finally, all BAR-series have Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, AirPlay 2, Alexa M2M, and Google Chromecast builtin. You can just set it up with your voice assistant-enabled device (smartphone or smart speaker) and you can use it to do commands.

Other features of the BAR-series include wireless detachable speakers (on some models). These rear speakers have rechargeable batteries within them which you can charge by reattaching them to the main unit after you’re done watching a movie.

THE RIGHT JBL BAR SOUNDBAR

JBL BAR 300

The JBL BAR 300 can be considered the youngest sibling in the BAR-lineup. This 5.0-channel soundbar is a compact all-in-one soundbar perfect for homes that don’t have much space to work with. Its 260W output still packs a punch and still offers immersive sounds. Like the rest of the series, the BAR 300 has MultiBeam which enables 3D surround sound even without the additional wireless speakers.

JBL BAR 500

The JBL BAR 500 is one of the two models that doesn’t have detachable speakers. This 5.1-channel soundbar still offers 3D sound thanks to the Dolby Atmos surround and JBL’s MultiBeam system. It still has a powerful 590W output which can still provide an immersive experience. It’s also the last model in the lineup that has the 10-inch subwoofer.

JBL BAR 800

The JBL BAR 800 is the perfect mid-ground in the BAR-lineup with its 5.1.2- channel and 720W output. It still offers a 3D surround experience with the detachable wireless speakers as well as the two up-firing drivers. It also has the same 10-inch subwoofer similar to the two much more expensive models.

JBL BAR 1000

The JBL BAR 1000 is a 7.1.4-channel soundbar that delivers a panoramic 3D surround sound. It has four up-firing drivers (two in the main unit, and two more in the detachable speakers) that offer a realistic height effect. It also has a 10-inch wireless subwoofer. Placed just beneath the BAR 1300, the JBL BAR 1000 outputs 880W, which still offers an immersive sound experience.

The JBL BAR 1300 is the crème de la crème in the lineup. This soundbar is the ultimate 11.1.4-channel soundbar and delivers the best 3D cinematic experience. It’s rated for 1170W output making it the most powerful in the lineup.

The 11 audio channels have 6 up-firing drivers so you can get the most realistic height effects. It is also one of the three models that feature detachable wireless surround speakers. The two detachable speakers can be used anywhere as a standalone Bluetooth speaker. Lastly, the JBL 1300 features a 10-inch subwoofer.

Country Manager, Harman International

Larry Secreto’s current journey with Harman was an unexpected one. In 2014, he had just opted for early retirement from his 20-year journey with another consumer electronics company. Just as he was ready to kick back and relax, he was approached by Harman International to head the brand’s local representation in the country.

Here are Secreto’s thoughts about Harman International and his leadership role in this premier audio company.

GOALS

Harman International is one of the world’s leading audioelectronic companies. It is the parent company of audio brands such as Harman Kardon, JBL, Infinity, and AKG, among many others. This broad portfolio of audio solutions is what Secreto aims to bring to more Filipinos when he joined the company.

“I had a very simple goal when I joined Harman. To bring out the best products and reach as many Filipino consumers as possible. In 2014, not many local consumers were aware of the fully-packed, superb sound quality, and very durable products we carried. So I made sure that it became very visible in both online and offline stores.”

ORGANIZATIONAL STRENGTH

As the Country Lead for Harman International, Secreto believes that the organization’s strength comes from its vast pool of international engineers who are able to roll out the best products pooling their insights on consumer preferences.

“Our company is very determined to advance the technology of consumer audio. Our engineers are making sure to bring out the best products by combining and synchronizing the different consumer preferences all over the world.”

CHALLENGES

Like other brands and products, Secreto and Harman have faced many challenges, and two of these stand out in particular.

“There are several challenges along the way. Primarily, we have to adjust to the change in target market. We used to target the millennials 6-7 years ago, but there’s been a growing market

for Gen Z in the last couple of years, and their preferences are slightly different, so we had to adjust quickly as we see this as the future market for us.

Another big challenge, which I see as very common here, is similar to that of other brands. As the products become more popular, the number of counterfeits is growing, largely enough that many consumers get fooled into thinking they look like the original products. We have done many campaigns for consumer education, but it seems like there are tons of these products free-flowing inside the country.”

FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY

Looking ahead, Secreto foresees more Filipinos embracing better audio solutions, especially as these become more accessible and affordable.

“The audio industry in the Philippines is on the upswing. With the advent of technology, people easily adapt to changes. With the availability and affordability of audio streaming platforms as well as movie streaming, more and more Filipinos will demand better-quality audio equipment. Moving forward, as music features and platforms advance, such as Dolby Atmos, many consumers will adopt and switch to audio products that are capable of playing on such platforms.”

MESSAGE

Finally, Secreto has a special message for consumers of JBL and other Harman audio products.

HOW AUDIO DIRECTS YOUR MEDIA EXPERIENCE

Audiovisual media rely on both your eyes and ears (hence the term) to transport you from your couch to distant worlds, whether real or imagined. While sound often takes a supporting role to visuals, it is nonetheless a critical part of the entire experience. Imagine having to watch your favorite shows on mute and just relying on subtitles and sound markers such as [BANG], [WIND HOWLS], or [EERIE FOOTSTEPS APPROACH]. Not too immersive, eh?

From the big screen to the gaming console, and even to those annoying commercials that interrupt your latest YouTube binge, sound not only completes the package as an aural filler. Rather, sound has the power to surface emotions, play with our senses, and transport us into the heat of the action. Strap on your headsets, and let us explore how sonic sorcery can bewitch our minds and leave us spellbound.

Lights, camera, audio!

In the realm of silver-screen flicks and small-screen series, sound is essential to creating an immersive viewing experience. This especially goes for the sheer thumping power of cinema speakers, which is hard to replicate at home unless you have some serious cash to spend. But even with just your device’s native speaker or a basic pair of in-ear headphones, sound can change your perception of a scene. Think of those subtle moments when ominous music thumps just as the bad guy reveals their true, evil intentions. Or even the triumphant overtures that accompany the main character’s

underdog triumph. Or those sweet K-pop melodies whenever the serious guy glimpses the happy-go-lucky gal. These audio cues, while evident in hindsight, are done on purpose to further emphasize the emotions that we must feel in the moment.

For example, recall the haunting score from Jaws. It’s just two simple yet highly iconic notes on repeat — da-dum, da-dum — and suddenly you are on the edge of your seat, awaiting the inevitable scene where someone wins a first-class ticket to see inside Mr. Shark’s stomach. Sylvester

Stallone’s Rocky also features a highly motivating simple beat in da-da-daduuum, da-da-da-duuum. Or if you’re looking for more modern examples, think of Hans Zimmer’s trademark swells in Inception and Interstellar that highlight the movies’ epic adventure or The Avengers’ theme song that makes you want to suit up for battle.

Pro tip! If you want to watch a horror movie for the plot without jumping out of your boots, try watching it on mute. Without the deep and rumbling sounds to indicate incoming danger, they just are not as scary.

It’s-a me, audio!

Jumping on over to the realm of video games, audio is crucial to likewise bringing about emotions and reactions. With horror games such as Silent Hill, Amnesia, or Outlast, audio designers layer various sounds, such as barely audible whispers, creaking doors, and even dripping water, to create an atmosphere of tension and fear. Often, these moments of uneasy quiet are used to make impending jump scares more anticipated — which ironically makes them even more surprising — as well as make players more likely to throw their controllers in shock.

With action shooters, the sound design enhances the intensity and seriousness of combat. Explosions, bullets whizzing past, everything going boom, and a tense soundtrack helps players feel fully immersed during chaotic firefights. Meanwhile, stealthier sections behind enemy lines drown you in silence, and haunting opera background music emphasizes the sheer magnitude of what you have to accomplish. And with puzzle platformers, audio cues are used to validate correct moves and provide a sense of accomplishment after solving a particularly tough level. In the case of Valve’s platformer Portal, the AI

companion named GLaDOS will even mock players for managing to make themselves stuck in a level. Talk about putting salt in the wound.

While some audio effects and music lend themselves as classics in particular genres, certain ones have made themselves all-time video game sound icons. Super Mario’s coin ding, Mortal Kombat’s “Finish him!,” Street Fighter’s “Hadouken!,” and Pac-Man’s waka-waka-waka — all these are not just iconic, but they also bring back fond childhood memories for those of us who grew up with them.

Ads are designed to grab our attention with what little runtime they have, and audio is a big part of this. Whether it’s a jingle, a sound effect, or an intriguing voiceover, sound can quickly capture the viewer’s attention and make the advertisement stand out. Moreover, did you know that there’s a specific term for how sounds are used to create distinct audio-based identities for businesses? It’s called sonic branding, and it’s one of the ways brands sway our purchasing decisions and ingrain themselves in our top-ofmind list. Just think of that catchy song that you randomly hum without prompt or even familiar audio cues that unmistakably correspond to a specific brand. For instance, Mcdonald’s has the papara papa vocalization, Old Spice has its whistle theme, and Jollibee has “Bida ang saya!”

The next time you find yourself moved by a haunting movie score, immersed in a gaming world, or humming a jingle that won’t leave your head, remember that it’s all part of the psychology of sound!

THE EVOLUTION OF AUDIO

Over the last couple of years, media consumption has tremendously evolved. Since Netflix and the rise of streaming services, we have been consuming more and more content.

Part of the consequence of the rise of media consumption is the improved quality. As we advance with more media consumption, the quality has also dramatically increased. A perfect example of this would be the increased visual upgrade in just the last couple of years. From the late 2010s we have completely transitioned from HD streaming to now up to 4K (QHD) and 8K is already on the horizon.

Alongside the visual aspect, audio technology has also dramatically improved. While not as noticeable as visual quality (because we’re more visually reliant), audio technology has changed, with more and more quality audio available via streaming. Similar to visual quality, to get the best audio you’ll also need upgraded audio equipment. Over the last decade, High Fidelity (Hi-Fi) audio equipment has become more and more accessible to the masses.

To know how we get to near immaculate sound, we need to go back to how we first tried to harness sound in the first place.

The Phonautograph And The Beginnings Of Sound Recording

Audio cues are part of our evolution as human beings. Not only do we communicate, but we also listen to sound cues in our environment for danger. Over time, we also used sounds to create rhythms that became marching orders for the rise of empires. Developed alongside the rhythms were hymns and melodies, used to venerate temples and gods and goddesses.

As humanity gained wealth and stability, the music once used for veneration became art and leisure. For the longest time in human history, the enjoyment of music was limited to hearing it in person. It was not until the late 18th century when we tried to bring music into our homes without any instrument. This was the invention of music boxes that enabled people to enjoy music without going to the opera or playing an instrument themselves.

With the industrial revolution, audio recording took shape. At this time, the electric microphone was introduced, the phonautograph was invented, and the phonograph later made. These three would usher in the age of sound recording, with the phonautograph being the first device to actually record visual sound waves.

The Phonautograph would be the precursor to the phonograph. The Phonautograph was invented by Frenchman Edouard-Scott de Martinville in 1857. It was the first device used to capture sound waves on the air and transcribe it onto paper or glass. While it was able to record sound, there was no way to play it back. The transcription served only as a visualization of sound waves.

It needed another 30 years for sound to be actually played back. In the 1870s, Thomas Edison invented the

phonograph, based on an idea of automated speech sounds for the telephone, an early concept of a recorded message if you will. From this idea, he experimented by playing back telegraph messages from wax paper, and eventually made the phonograph. If you’re unfamiliar with the phonograph, you might be familiar with its other name, the gramophone. It is the music player you would see in your grandparent’s house or in period films. The gramophone can record and playback the recording on a wax cylinder or a disc record.

The phonograph eventually become the gateway of the world to listen to concerts in the comfort of their homes. Orchestras, bands, and even singers used the newly made device to record their songs to reach a wider audience. The public, on the other hand, bought phonographs to bring the orchestra into their homes.

The Electric Age And Mass Media

By the dawn of the 20th century, new technology was rapidly taking over as the go-to music device, the radio. From music at home with a phonograph, for the first time, the public was now able to listen to music in real-time, and it was largely thanks to microphones.

Italian engineer Guglielmo Marconi created the radio. It came from using electromagnetic waves to wirelessly transmit telegraphs over long distances. He created portable transmission and receiver boxes able to transmit sounds over long distances with the core of the device being an electronic microphone to transfer sounds to electronic waves.

In 1910, Marconi’s device was placed at the New York Metropolitan

Opera House for a broadcast of a performance of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci. The broadcast was heard around New York City and is credited as the first public radio broadcast in the US.

This trial pushed radio into the limelight as an entertainment device. Prior to this, it was mainly used as a communication tool rather than for leisure.

Fortuitously, the electrification of the world allowed for massive improvements in audio recording and production. From the low fidelity sounds of the phonograph, the electric microphones and electromechanical recorders were miles ahead in terms of sound recording quality, thanks to a much wider sound frequency range.

Western Electric was a major force in audio technology during this period. The former subsidiary of the Bell Telephone company invested heavily in audio during this time and made multiple electric systems, including the Vitaphone which finally gave sound to film.

It was also during this period was Nathanial Baldwin invented headphones. While headphones were technically available to phone operators, Baldwin’s invention was much more lightweight, and was made for various audio communications, and not telegraphs unlike its predecessors. The US Navy used these new headphones en masse as they were the first to order from Baldwin.

Post-War And The Rise Of High Fidelity Recording

The next major era in audio history was just after World War II. In the 1930s the Germans found a way to use magnetic tape to record broadcasts. It was initially limited to Germany (for obvious reasons) but was subsequently brought to the world by the Allies post-WWII.

The magnetic tape recording allowed more fidelity and was much more compact and portable than the bulky vinyl discs. A story goes that the magnetic tape sound recorder was leaps and bounds better than vinyl, attracting the late American singer Bing Crosby. Crosby was so impressed by the quality of the recording because

it rivaled live broadcast quality. The tapes could also be played back countless times with no appreciable loss of quality.

Another important innovation during this era was the creation of the Hi-Fi stereo headset. John Koss is credited with the development of this headphone when he created it alongside a private listening system. It was also the first headphone to be made exclusively for music listening.

it was built directly on the headphone. Then there’s the open-back headphone from Sennheiser which opened the door for a wider sound stage yet lightweight for all-day usage.

The Digital Age

As computers became more powerful and accessible, so did the audio-sphere adapt. The 1970s became the start of the modern age of audio with the arrival of digital recording.

There were a few standards that became the bridge from magnetic tape to digital. There was the digital audio tape and the digital compact cassette. The compact cassette was a game changer when the first Sony Walkman arrived. The Sony Walkman was the first portable audio player to catapult music listening to new heights. Its portable size made it a must-have for everyone who wanted to bring their music on the go.

The landscape of audio continued to evolve from there, from compact cassettes to VHS tapes for movies and videos. Then, the multi-media file became more handy with compact discs (CD).

At this time, the first Active Noise Cancelling headphones were made available to the public courtesy of Bose.

The iPod, Bluetooth, and Streaming

Finally, by the 2000s, the shape of modern music listening emerged, thanks to the second portable audio device to influence the industry, the Apple iPod. The iPod allowed you to bring your music wherever you go all in the most portable way possible. But what really set it apart from the other MP3 players was the iTunes integration that allowed customers to legitimately get their music.

Then the next revolution happened. Bluetooth technology became fast enough to allow the streaming of large data almost in real-time from devices. This was the spark for Bluetooth headphones to slowly gain market acceptance.

Finally, in 2006, Spotify was founded in Sweden by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon. It is currently the largest music streaming platform, with 527 million users globally as of March 2023. Spotify as well as Youtube changed the way we consume music. Prior to the two, to enjoy legitimate music, you needed to have a physical disc or buy a digital copy from the iTunes store. Now you don’t need a physical copy. Instead, you can just stream it from the platform’s server to enjoy.

EARPHONES, BUT BUILT DIFFERENTLY

Wired earphones have been with us for so many years with the singular purpose of delivering excellent audio quality. Still, their shape and form have continually changed, with more features added to suit entertainment needs. These were typically connected to an audio source through an earphone jack.

Now we have wireless earphones, or what we now call “ earbuds” that are built to fit on the ear canals, and are connected via Bluetooth. These are usually batterypowered and need to be charged for continued use.

Let’s take a look at other interesting aspects of the now increasingly popular “earbuds.”

Waterproof, Even Underwater. Earbuds that are built with an IPX7 rating or higher have the ability to be submerged in water for longer hours. This means you won’t have any problems if these types of earbuds get wet — you can even swim with the fish with it. Depending on how you use it, if you are more into tough workouts or training in the swimming pool, you might consider getting one with a built-in MP3 player. Bluetooth earbuds work better if you are close to your audio source and sounds can be choppy beyond a certain fixed distance.

Tracking Technology. Wireless earbuds usually come in a storage case with a battery bank that charges the earbuds automatically. But what happens if you misplace your Bluetooth earbuds or simply forgot to return it to the case? Earbuds are tiny and difficult to find. To address this problem, Apple has perfected its tracking technology, allowing for pinpoint accuracy in locating their Apple Airpods. Other audio brands like Bose, Sennheiser, and Skullcandy has a similar Tile Tracking Technology for their Bluetooth earbuds.

Active Noise Cancellation. When focusing on a task or simply enjoying some “me time” by listening to some music or podcasts, extraneous noise can be distracting. The introduction of Active Noise cancellation (ANC) in small and lightweight can elevate the listening experience.

Spatial Audio. Audio brands such as JBL, Samsung, Sony, Bose, Apple, Anker, Beats, and others offer the finest sound quality. With the introduction of spatial audio, you are able to enjoy a surround sound home theater effect in your earbuds. With the effect of sound coming from every direction, this brings a cinema and concert-like experience to your ears.

DJI WIRELESS MIC

For the longest time, GADGETS Magazine relied on a lapel mic in our interviews. It can be a bit of hassle to quickly prepare it at times, especially if the mic decided to tangle itself for no apparent reason. But the beauty of a wired lapel mic is in its quality. You get clean and crisp audio with less background noise, as compared to a boom mic. But wires are still a hassle, so when the opportunity to upgrade came around, we decided to go with a wireless mic, like the DJI Mic.

WIRELESS MIC

DESIGN

The DJI Mic is a small and cute wireless mic system. It comes with its own carrying case that doubles as the charging case.

Opening the case, you’ll see the three devices — the two transmitters (the mic itself) and the touchscreen receiver. Also in the case are the USB-C and Lightning adapter for the receiver, so it does not only rely on a 3.5mm connection.

Currently, the DJI Mic only comes in black, which can be tricky to hide if your presenter is wearing a white t-shirt or light-colored dress. Fortunately, the back of the transmitter is magnetic and DJI included magnets to help you find creative ways to hide it.

The transmitter has a USB-C port and power button on its left, and then the link and record (more on this later) buttons on the right. Then on top is the mic itself and a 3.5mm mic output, in case you want to add your own lapel mic to it.

The receiver has an adaptive port beneath, allowing you to connect it to either USB-C or Lightning. On the side are the 3.5mm

audio out port so you can connect it to your camera via 3.5mm audio, and the 3.5mm audio monitor port, so the camera man can monitor the audio even if you’re further back. There’s also the power button, and an additional USB-C port.

HARDWARE

Being a wireless mic, the DJI Mic uses the 2.4GHz frequency band for its wireless transmission. The 2.4Ghz is rated for up to 250 meters away from the receiver, which holds true provided there’s a clear line of sight. But even without line of sight, the wireless mic still functions over a fair bit of distance.

The DJI Mic has a ton of features in its arsenal. First, the transmitter can double as a recorder. When you set up the device

you can press the mic to also record the audio while it simultaneously broadcasts to the receiver. This is a lifesaver in case the camera loses audio or if you forget to set the audio setting on the camera.

Another great feature is the safety track function. You can set up the mic system to automatically have a backup track in case of problems with the initial audio clips. The mic will record a separate audio at minus 6db which helps in instances when you can’t repeat the interview.

There are also loads of settings in the receiver, including turning the transmitter from mono to stereo. This lets the transmitter record separately, letting the audience hear stereo audio, perfect during interviews.

In terms of audio quality, the microphone does its job pretty well, coming out sharp and crisp. However, you do need to be cautious of the transmitter gain, as a bad setup can leave you with a pretty low audio.

DJI’s website has the frequency response of the DJI Mic at 50Hz – 20kHz and 150Hz – 20kHz when you have the Low Cut feature turned on.

USER EXPERIENCE

One of the main reasons why we decided on the DJI Mic is its ease of use. The receiver is controlled by a touchscreen and a fairly easy-tounderstand UI. There you can adjust the mic gain, shift the recording mode, and even separately tune the gain on each transmitter.

Setting up is also extremely easy. The microphone is essentially plug-and-play — just attach the receiver to the camera with the included clip and cable, and you’re good to go. The plug-and-play system extends to all devices — just use the adapter and plug it in, and you’re good to go. There’s no transmitter pairing needed nor additional software installation.

The DJI Mic is also extremely portable. The whole carrying case is just slightly bulkier than a pocketbook. Battery

management is also great since all three device charge in the case. The case itself only needs a single USB-C to juice it right back up.

Battery life lasts for around 5 hours of continuous use. The devices need 70 minutes of charge to fully power up. The case is rated for 2 hours and 40 minutes to be fully charged, and a single charge can then fully charge all three devices about 1.8 times.

VALUE

Coming in at around PHP 9,000 for the two transmitters and receiver kit, and PHP12,000 for the single transmitter and receiver kit, the DJI Mic is not for an entry level device as it’s a pretty hefty investment. But if you can afford the expense, it is honestly one of the best wireless lavalier mics out there, and hands down worth every penny.

HPI then released the powerful TM125 in 1979, the TM110S model in 1980, and the first TMX155 for heavy-duty tricycle use in 1981 pioneering the fourstroke aircooled engine in the country.

In 1983, Honda Motor Co. Ltd took majority ownership which gave birth to Honda Philippines, Inc. The company then launched the XL125SR model to the Philippine market.

From there, HPI continued the tradition of bringing new motorcycles to deliver mobility and comfort to Filipinos. Among the products introduced were the C70DD Econopower in 1984 and the trendy PF50 in 1989.

Honda then unveiled the C100 Dream model in 1996 which was wellappreciated by many Filipino motorists,

In 2003, the company celebrated its 30th anniversary. To mark its 30 years of progressive partnership with the Filipino people, HPI launched the TMX125 and the limited edition XRM110. This was followed by the Wave 125S, XRM110, and XR200 motorbikes in 2004.

In February 2005, HPI produced its 1 millionth motorcycle units and held a groundbreaking ceremony in its new Batangas plant, a factory that would then become the country’s largest motorcycle manufacturing plant. A year later, HPI made the big move from Parañaque to the new and more

advanced manufacturing facility in Batangas. In 2007, the XRM125 was introduced.

By 2008, the company produced a total of 2 million motorcycles and successfully released the XRM RS125 model. This was followed by Honda BeAT and Wave Dash 110 in 2009 and the CB110 in 2010.

In 2011, the company unveiled the CBR150R and Scoopy models and achieved an accumulated production of 3 million motorcycles. HPI then introduced the TMX Supremo motorcycle the following year. To mark its 40th anniversary in 2013, the company achieved a total production of 4 million units, later growing to 5 million in 2016.

The popular model Click125i and Click150i models, “The Game Changer”, were launched in 2018 in

which HPI attained the No. 1 market share in AT segment in the Philippines and later succeeded by the Genio, ADV150, and Supra GTR150 in 2019. That same year, HPI attained an overall production of 6 million motorcycle units. In 2020, the company had its first successful localized automatic (AT) production of Honda BeAT, allowing for the release of the new version of the motorcycle together with AirBlade150.

In 2021, HPI unveiled the Honda X-ADV, TMX125 Alpha, XRM125, PCX160, Dio, CBR500R, and CB500X in the country. HPI then reached an accumulated production of 7 million motorcycles in 2022 and introduced new exciting models, such as the Click160, CB150X, AirBlade160, ADV160, and Click125 in 2022. And with its second successful localized

AT production this year, the company recently launched the newest version of Click125 models.

They say that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. The Legend of Zelda franchise has been a critical and commercial success since its debut on the NES in 1986. The franchise is the creation of legendary video game developers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. Spanning almost four decades, multiple generations of gamers have looked to Zelda as one of the best action RPG franchises ever. Zelda games have come

out on every Nintendo console from the NES all the way to the Nintendo Switch. Classic Zelda games can also be found on the Virtual Console, and some even have been remade or remastered. The latest entry in the franchise, Tears of the Kingdom, is proof that the franchise is continuing to wow and amaze gamers to this very day.

A sequel to 2017’s Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom picks up with helping Princess Zelda save Hyrule from the evil machinations of Ganondorf once again. I have always avoided placing

spoilers in my reviews, but the story has raised the bar even by Zelda standards. You explore not only Hyrule, but also the Sky Islands and the Depths, two new areas in the game. There is a lot to do and a lot to explore in this installment of Zelda, with exploration and customization at the peak of the franchise itself. Players have created some of the most ridiculous devices in the game, and that’s just one aspect of the game.

What’s new to the game? Zonal devices allow players to use for combat, movement, exploration, and other purposes, which players have used to customize their horse, homes, and other aspects of the game. There are also five new powers: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall, and Autobuild. Ultrahand allows players to pick up and move objects and even fuse them together for the ridiculous building that players are doing in-game. Fuse allows Link to combine certain items to link to weapons and armor in order to augment their abilities or increase their durability (i.e. fusing explosives to an arrow will allow the arrow to explode on contact). Autobuild recreates a device that is made with Ultrahand which consumes zonalite. Ascend allows players to move upwards through solid surfaces. Recall can be used on an object to rewind its movement.

Shrines and Korok Seeds come back to Tears of the Kingdom. If one clears a Shrine, you can choose for Link to increase his health or the size of his stamina wheel. You can also use these Shrines as fast travel points. Korok Seeds add to Link’s inventory, allowing you to carry more weapons, shields, or bows. If you want to keep all your creations, you should find more Korok Seeds. Accessing The Depths is also extremely challenging for Link. You temporarily lose one heart until you return to the surface or travel to a Lightroot.

One of the best things about Tears of the Kingdom is that you aren’t just fighting enemies or solving puzzles, which were staples of previous Zelda games. I felt like I had to use my brain more often than I would in most video games I play, where I’m mindlessly blasting enemies to get a high score or to impress my friends if it’s a multiplayer game. In essence, this is the perfect blend of critical thinking, logic, and gaming all in one, all with a familiar franchise’s branding to make it entertaining.

I would give Tears of the Kingdom my highest recommendation as there is endless replay value and fun due to the world-building and customization of what you can do in-game. There is some sort of duality of man at play here — you can increase the complexity of the game or just have mindless fun using the Ultrahand and Fuse abilities. Either way, this is a strong candidate for many video game awards in an already-packed year for gaming.

When Cameron interacts with an object or a person, there is a shiny golden moth that hovers above his head, indicating a hotspot for characters to interact with. You can re-read the past conversations by pressing H on a PC; on a smartphone, a book button is at the top of the screen. Once Cameron is outside of his bedroom, you will be accompanying him to the bathroom. The game does not indicate the bathroom’s location, so you will need to look for it.

Dogs have a high sensitivity for detecting danger and Billy starts to bark when Cameron enters the bathroom. When he’s done with his business, the monster from his dream appears right outside the window and startles him and Billy. The monster disappears and Billy suddenly runs off outside the house with Cameron chasing after him. You need to aid Cameron in looking for Billy, and encountering a sinister scarecrow

and being chased by it is included in the “looking for Billy” package.

But be careful, since you hold the life of Cameron when making your a choices. For example, while hiding from the scarecrow, he hears someone breathing inside of a log. You will get to choose to “enter the log” or “keep going,” and since my urge of choosing “enter the log” is much more powerful even though I know it’ll be the death of me, I still chose it, and there I got jumpscared by the scarecrow and game over is written all over my screen. But you’ll be able to go back where you died and redo what you did, so you can continue searching for Billy with Cameron.

When playing on a smartphone, the game instructs you to tap and drag your finger to make Cameron walk, and slide down to make him crawl. There is also a button of an eye with a hand on the right

corner of the screen that you can press to interact with the objects and people when Cameron is in front of it.

On a PC, you need to press the letters W,A,S,D, and Shift to walk around. For interacting with objects and people, you can press the letter E. For instance, as Cameron goes to check his cabinet to see if the monster from his nightmare is in there, it’s his dog Billy, who jumps out from the closet. Cameron feels relieved and ready to go to the bathroom as he was initially hesitant because of his nightmare.

Cameron’s arc ends with the creepy scarecrow final chase, when you can choice to hide inside a dark well or run through the woods. The scene then transitions to the main story of the game wherein you will meet and play a group of teenagers who have different complicated stories, fears, and traumatic memories.

Gaming

You must solve puzzles and make choices as they are the keys to help the characters in overcome their challenges. The game is age-restricted due to these pyschologoical horror vibes.

Moth Lake starts with the unfamiliar behavior of animals and the disappearance of the little boy Cameron in the City. The main three characters, Toby, Murray, and Scraper decide to investigate the case, and suddenly Bruno, Ellie, and Alba join in the investigation driven by their curiosity. Each of these characters has a different skill set on their character profiles for specific areas. Scraper, though, is “completely useless.” However, he is the “spice of comedy” in the game as he gives out comedic comments everytime

Ellie deduces pieces of information during the game or when he randomly shares or does some unnecessary stuff.

Toby is the brawn in the group, Murray is the climber, Ellie is good at deduction, Bruno is the runner, and Alba is agile. When you play these characters, you’ll feel the teamwork that they have in order to survive from eldritch monsters and support each other after they individually conquer their own demons. There is also a mood meter for the characters and this mood meter must not fluctuate because the atmosphere will get depressed wherein they insult each other, be on edge, and act selfishly. When I played Bruno and had his mood meter level so low, he easily

got mad and regretted his decision in investigating with them.

Their facial expressions are also transparent, so if you see any of the characters with a sad or angry face, then it’s a sign that their mood meter is low. The mood meter will only decrease if you make the wrong choices and sometimes it happens to the given plot of the characters. But when the mood meter is full, it means that the characters are in a good mood, smiling, and they help each other. There is also an extra funny animation when the characters are in idle position. When in a general mood, the player can unlock hidden scenes. nd I wasn’t able to unlock this because I was too invested in the story. Sui Arts shares

Close-up shots of the characters’ expressions and monsters are included and it fuels the horror factor of the game. It also builds a connection between you and the characters as you are able to grasp and feel their

emotions while helping to solve their own past and fears. When I played Ellie, it was revealed that her past and fears were connected to what happened to her brother. Her story was one of the scariest that I encountered as she blamed herself for not being able to save him.

I forgot to mention that the soundtrack of this game is interesting because it helps in emphasizing the emotions of the characters in every scene. As you are being chased by an eldritch monster, the music builds up more adrenaline as you find a way to hide or defend yourself from the monster. The whole concept of the game reminds me of the TV series Stranger Things, particularly the tone of the colors and its time period. The difference is there is no upside down world, but only another dimension that opens in a total eclipse, and the elder people sacrifice a child every year just to keep the monsters calm and prevent wrecking the whole city. When you play the game, everything changes, making it the best game to play when you are in the mood to twist your mind in discovering the secrets of Moth Lake City.

GOOGLE UNVEILS NEW AI FEATURES

At Google’s annual I/O developers conference, the company announced over 100 product updates, including AI-powered features coming to Android, Bard, Maps, Photos, and Workspace, details about Google’s latest large language models, new ways to preview experimental features in products—including an experience that brings generative AI into Search—and much, much more!

A recurring theme across many of these announcements was Google’s commitment to investing in AI responsibility, which include approaches that will help people identify AI-generated content whenever they encounter it. This also includes building Google’s models to include watermarks and other techniques to ensure every one of its AI-generated images has a markup in the original file to give people context if they come across it outside of Google’s platforms.

Bard, Google’s collaborative AI, is now available in over 180 countries including the Philippines! This means that there will no longer be a need to be waitlisted. Bard will also be going multimodal soon and will be able to combine images and text in prompts and its responses, which will be pulled directly from Google Image Search. EMBEDDED MALWARE WARNING!

PLDT and Smart urge internet users to protect themselves against malwares that have been embedded in legitimate websites. PLDT and Smart’s Cyber Security Operations Group (CSOG) says that even without the user’s knowledge, these malicious codes can initiate the download of harmful files in a ‘drive-by download’ attack.

“Once downloaded, these malwares exploit the vulnerabilities of your device, allowing cybercriminals to steal your personal data, create disruptions, or take control of your credentials,” warned Angel Redoble, FVP and chief information security officer of PLDT and Smart.

These malicious files can lurk in websites without detection. Users can trigger the attack by simply visiting the site. Outdated applications or software are especially vulnerable to drive-by downloads.

TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST STEALTHY ATTACKS, CSOG SUGGESTS DOING THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS TO SECURE YOUR DEVICES:

1. Regularly update your web browser and operating systems to ensure that your device is running the latest security patches.

2. Uninstall and delete applications you are not using to prevent them from being exploited by malwares.

3. Carefully read and review security pop-ups before clicking them.

4. It’s best to use an administrator account when installing programs in your computers.

5. Keep your antivirus up to date.

PLDT and Smart have been ramping up efforts to protect customers from cyber-attacks. In March 2023 alone, PLDT and Smart blocked more than 1.7 billion attempts to open malicious domains. CSOG has also thwarted more than 1.2 billion cyber-attacks and data breaches against its network and assets in the same time frame.

Fresh from the success of its latest plant-based wastewater treatment project, the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) bats for more areas of collaboration with industry and government to scale up sustainable innovations designed to address water pollution.

Through its Technopreneurship and Collaborative Applied Research (TechnoCoRe) thrust, T.I.P. is now completing the product and system operations manual for its phyto vortex

technology to facilitate its adoption in other sewage treatment facilities.

The system is a first of its kind in the Philippines and integrates phytoremediation, FOG (fat, oil, grease) remover, and vortex technologies to eliminate primary and secondary effluents from water sources using reed beds and plants as organic decontaminants.

T.I.P. has been working on the project since 2021, after signing a research collaboration agreement with Subic Water and Sewerage Co., Inc. (SUBICWATER), under the official project title Constructed Wetland for Wastewater Treatment of Effluent from a Water Provider

The school rendered extensive applied research services courtesy of faculty members, students, and consultants from its various engineering programs led by the Chemical Engineering Department of T.I.P. Manila and the TechnoCoRe Catalyst Office.

They worked together with industry practitioners to design, test and validate the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of the phyto vortex system, according to T.I.P. Manila vice president for academic affairs Dr. Rosalinda Valdepeñas.

A series of design upgrades were done to ensure that the integrated technologies used can successfully treat wastewater in compliance with the Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The project was inaugurated last April 17, 2023, at the CUBI Sewage Treatment Plant of SUBICWATER in Subic, Zambales with officials from the

Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Subic Bay Water Regulatory Board (SBWRB), Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Ecology Center, SBMA Public Works and Technical Services Group, and Morong Water District in attendance. DOST financed more than half of the estimated PHP8.3-million total project costs while T.I.P. and SUBICWATER shouldered the rest. Rollout for the phyto vortex system on other sites will depend on SUBICWATER and other interested local government units.

“We hope that the impact of this collaborative endeavor goes beyond the confines of Subic as the phyto vortex system holds immense potential for large-scale application throughout the Philippines,” Dr. Valdepeñas said.

The project is part of the DOST Collaborative Research and Development to Leverage Philippine Economy (CRADLE) program with the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) as the monitoring body.

Dr. Valdepeñas thanked DOSTCRADLE and SUBICWATER for entrusting T.I.P. with this technological opportunity. “It serves as a shining example of how academia and industry can collaborate to create real-world solutions that benefit our society,” she said.

MORE WEIGHBRIDGE STATIONS AVAILABLE FOR NLEX EXPRESSWAYS TRUCKERS

NLEX Corporation has set up more weighbridge stations for truckers entering NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector to help them comply with the anti-overloading policy of the government which aims to promote motorist safety and prevent early deterioration of roads caused by overloading.

The tollway company is strictly enforcing the anti-overloading provisions of Republic Act No. 8794 otherwise known as “An Act Imposing a Motor Vehicle Users Charge on Owners of all Types of Motor Vehicle and for Other Purposes”. It is also implementing the 33-ton weight limit on the Candaba Viaduct southbound, as affirmed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The new weighbridge stations are located in SCTEX Porac, Pampanga, and Concepcion, Tarlac. The privatelyowned ACB Truck Scale Services weighbridge in Dinalupihan, Bataan, has also been opened to all trucks from Monday to Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Truckers need to pay a PHP400 to

PHP600 fee, which will go directly to ACB, depending on the truck types.

NLEX is also eyeing to open more stations in the coming months to further promote safety and convenience. These locations will be in SCTEX Floridablanca and Dinalupihan, and NLEX Marilao, Mindanao, and Karuhatan.

Apart from these, there are 12 existing locations along the entire stretch of NLEX and four satellite locations in partnership with private firms. These private stations are the TAG Metal Weighbridge in Ninoy Aquino Highway, Bgy. Sta Maria, Mabalacat, Pampanga; Clark Development Corporation (CDC) Weighbridge in Clark Freeport, Mabalacat, Pampanga; Subic Bay International Terminal Corporation (SBITC) Weighbridge in San Bernardino Road, Subic Port District, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Zambales; and Mega Subic Terminal Services, Inc. (MSTSI) weighbridge in NSD Compound, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Zambales.

NLEX management notes that having these weighbridge sites in place will

help reduce overloading incidents that threaten the safety of motorists as the extra load may affect the driver’s control of the vehicle. This will also protect roads from further damage and improve the efficient movement of cargo.

Last year, NLEX partnered with stakeholders in the business sector to set up weighbridge stations closer to their respective bases as part of its initiative to ease the daily operations of various companies while advancing road safety. It has also implemented the 33-ton weight limit on the Candaba Viaduct southbound as studies showed that continuous heavy loads caused great strain on the bridge.

With safety as a paramount priority, the company has been carrying out road safety programs and measures since 2005, in keeping with its mission of elevating the customer experience and providing safer and more comfortable travel.

ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (Philippines) (STT GDC Philippines), a joint venture between Globe, Ayala Corporation, and Singapore-based ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), recently announced that it is expanding its footprint in Asia with the development of its largest and most interconnected carrier-neutral data center in the Philippines.

This announcement comes as the company celebrates its first anniversary milestone since the formation of the JV. The data center campus also marks STT GDCs’ single largest data center project development to date across its global portfolio.

“With the Philippine digital industry set to grow at a projected compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20% through 2030, we are seeing rapidly growing demand for high-quality colocation services in

Have you ever heard the term “X walked so Y could run?” Today’s modern social networks can thank MySpace for walking so that Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms could run. People around my age (around 32-38 years old now) were among the most active users of MySpace, myself included. People spent hours on MySpace customizing their pages (making it a great way to learn HTML), talking to others on the platform through private messages and forums, and finding groups for common interests.

MySpace also helped launch the careers of bands such as Bullet For My Valentine, From First To Last, and the recently disbanded Panic! At The Disco. However, within a few years, this was all relegated to the background as other social media platforms rose in popularity. Why isn’t it the titan of social media that it was in the mid-to-late 2000s? Could it have stayed relevant today had a few things gone their way or if certain social media platforms didn’t take off the way they did?

MySpace was launched on August 1, 2003, by eUniverse employees who saw potential in Friendster’s social networking abilities. Friendster also launched in 2003 as a social networking company initially from Mountain View, California but later expanded to Asia, where it became very popular in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. Among eUniverse’s employees was Tom Anderson, more commonly known as “MySpace Tom.” Anderson served as MySpace’s first president and was also the first friend you made when you set up a MySpace account.

As previously mentioned, MySpace was also a place you could learn and test HTML, and users enjoyed the immense customization of the platform. One of my favorite features of the platform was that you could choose a song to place on your profile that started playing when you visited another user’s profile. Some users even developed templates that one could use if one was too lazy to code their own page. In 2005, MySpace was talking about acquiring Facebook for the low price of US$75 million (US$116.5 million in 2023) but founder Mark Zuckerberg turned them down, and probably for the best (Facebook is worth over US$670 billion as of this writing).

News Corporation purchased MySpace in July 2005 for US$580 million (US$900.9 million in 2023),

beating out Viacom to purchase the website itself. By 2006, MySpace was worth US$1.7 billion and its star was rising as a result of the purchase. By August 2006, the 100-millionth MySpace account was created. Later that month, MySpace signed an advertising deal with Google that guaranteed US$900 million over three years and brought in US$30 million a month in revenue by October of that year. News Corporation attempted to merge MySpace with Yahoo! back in 2007; MySpace was worth US$12 billion at the time.

MySpace could not hold back the surge of Facebook in the late 2000s. Facebook overtook MySpace in Alexa ranking by April 2008, and a year later surpassed MySpace in the United States in unique visitors. One explanation for MySpace’s decline was their “portal strategy” that built audiences around entertainment and music, while Facebook and Twitter had added new features to enhance the user experience and social networking experience in general.

A former MySpace executive also claimed that the advertising deal with Google placed more ads on an already ad-heavy site, making the site slower and less user-friendly as a result. Today, ads are even more intrusive and are unfortunately seen as a fact of life, which was a foreboding for the fate of MySpace. MySpace’s focus on monetization was in stark contrast to Facebook’s focus

on user engagement, which ultimately led to Facebook’s meteoric rise and MySpace’s downfall.

Changes in MySpace’s leadership team in 2009 also contributed to the site’s downfall throughout the 2010s. Reports surfaced that MySpace lost 10 million users between January and February 2011, while News Corporation also placed MySpace up for sale in February 2011 at a price between US$50 million to US$200 million. The MySpace brand was in freefall as Specific Media purchased the site in June 2011 for only US$35 million. News Corporation chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch even admitted that the purchase of MySpace was a “huge mistake” comparable to Time Warner’s disastrous purchase of AOL back in 2000.

The late 2010s relegated MySpace to the background as the site changed ownership several times between 2016 and 2019. MySpace’s failure to adjust to the times and to create better user experiences were just some factors in its downfall. As for MySpace Tom? He currently travels the world and is active on social media such as Instagram, while people fondly remember him as the face of the once-giant social media site in an era where social media has become controversial. While everyone is spread out all across social media platforms, remember that MySpace created a path for the current social media giants to traverse.
