ARE WE HEADING INTO AN ALL-DIGITAL ERA?
round five years ago, I tried an experiment. I went cashless for two months to see if I could survive using as little cash as possible and settling my payments through what was then a burgeoning e-wallet scene.
Little did I know that, propelled by a paradigm-shifting pandemic, what was then an experiment has become the new norm. The Visa Consumer Payment Attitudes study for 2023 showed that almost 55% of Filipinos use cashless payments. Based on the study, 43% of Filipino respondents carry less cash in their wallets. This marks a significant change
in Filipinos’ attitude towards traditional cash payments.
Beyond the Philippines, cashless payments have taken off around the world. The Capgemini Research Institute’s 2023 World Payment Report found that noncash transactions reached 1.3 trillion. Statista forecasts that cashless transactions will increase to 2.297 trillion by 2027.
Driving the global cashless trend are the new ways of transfering money. There are several methods for cashless payment. Globally, the largest and most common are credit and debit cards. Second, and rapidly becoming more popular, are QR payments through e-wallets/ mobile wallets. There is also online banking and money transfer, NFC through e-wallets or mobile wallets, and finally, the fast-growing buy now pay later schemes.
The most recognizable and most common cashless payment method is payment utilizing your credit or debit card. Major retailers have been serving credit or debit users since the 1950s. They have been around for so long that they are considered a pillar in banking and financial services.
Also, an innovation for the cashless trend was the rise in digital banking. Online banking was an important result of the 1990s internet boom. It was a game changer in banking and finance, allowing depositors instant
access to their accounts either through their smartphones or computers.
Digital or online banking allows users to seamlessly receive and send funds to other users not only in real-time but also securely. Online transactions completely remove the need to physically transfer cash from one account to another, as the bank’s own records would keep track of your transactions and balances.
E-wallets, sometimes called mobile wallets or digital wallets, are financial apps that store your financial information, and sometimes even your banking details. As the name implies, they function like a wallet that users can place money digitally and then use these to pay for purchases or bills.
E-wallets burst into the scene in 1998, when Paypal became the first mainstream e-wallet in the world. In 2003, a similar trend started in China with Alibaba creating Alipay. Now e-wallets dominate as the go-to digital payment solution.
There are two major ways how e-wallets complete a cashless transaction. First, there’s “tap-topay” which utilizes your device’s NFC and RFID to complete a secured connection and transaction. Tap-to-pay works beyond your mobile device, with the same technology being used in new credit and debit cards. The card’s EMV chips function like your phone’s NFC antenna, and data can be transferred through NFC and RFID.
The second major way is through QR codes. QR payments utilize your device’s camera to find and scan a specially generated QR code. Once scanned the app recognizes the payment details encoded in the QR image and translates it within the app to complete the transaction. The only remaining step is to authorize the transaction through your chosen authentication method.
What is the future of cash?
There are a number of reasons why people are going cashless. Studies indicate that the major reasons are ease of use and accessibility. Cashless payments are faster than traditional payments. A simple tap or click, and you’re good to go.
It’s this reason why cashless adoption is rapidly rising. As many ditch the plain old dough, what’s next? Just what is the future of money?
There have been several commentaries and studies on the topic.
Just before the pandemic, there were individuals who heralded cryptocurrencies as the future of finance. Blockchain technology and the decentralized nature of crypto led many to believe that the future of money lies in a transparent and secure system.
One country actually accepts cryptocurrency as legal tender. El Salvador adopted the
cryptocurrency Bitcoin as a recognized legal tender in 2021. This means that you can use Bitcoin like regular currency.
Unlike El Salvador, the world is not keen on completely jumping in on the crypto train just yet. Many point out that the current crypto ecosystem is not conducive to making it a legitimate fiat currency replacement. The market remains volatile and unpredictable, two traits most governments don’t want for their economy.
Enter Stablecoins. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies but, unlike traditional crypto, have a stable value. While regular cryptocurrency is highly
dependent on supply and demand to determine its price, stablecoins are tied either to traditional fiat currency or a commodity.
The perfect example of stablecoins is the cryptocurrency Tether. Tether’s value is linked to the US Dollar, and the blockchain’s algorithm controls the supply to maintain stability and avoid fluctuations. Still, it’s not a foolproof system. In 2022, the stablecoin TerraUSD (UST) collapsed in what was essentially a crypto version of a bank run. A bank run is when depositors lose confidence in a bank and suddenly withdraw all their money. As banks move cash behind the scenes, a surge in withdrawals increases the chances of the bank defaulting,
and tied to its national banks and reserves. In a way, it’s similar to when banks print new cash, but instead of new paper money or coins, they assign the value to a digital token, achieving stability with the necessary infrastructure.

Bank runs are rare in modern times as governments have placed certain safeguards and systems to prevent banks from immediately collapsing. This system includes insurance, bonds, and sometimes necessary bailouts from the government to prevent a domino effect. Unlike a governmentbacked currency, stablecoins lack the necessary infrastructure and system needed to prevent another Terra from happening.
This leads us to Central Bank Digital Currencies or CBDCs. CBDCs are digital currencies that, unlike cryptocurrencies, are wholly-backed by a government
The main difference between a CBDC and a digital wallet/ money is that the latter still has an equivalent cash amount tied to it. In essence, the 50 pesos in your e-wallet has a corresponding 50 pesos deposited in a bank. Depending on how central banks adopt CBDCs, these could be distinct from existing circulating money or could replace a portion of the circulating money.
Central Banks around the world have either adopted CBDCs or have started testing CBDCs. Many, including the US, UK, and the Philippines, are still in the process of determining how to adopt CBDC.
CBDCs are still relatively new, so there is still a sense of wait-andsee whether it could be the future of money. For now, cash remains king in the foreseeable future. Through centuries of utilizing and trading with cash, it has become the bedrock of society. As we strive toward a digital financial future, for now, cash is still its foundation.
he Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is encouraging Filipinos to maximize the bank’s Mobile Check Deposit feature on the BPI app, which allows clients to deposit checks in five minutes.
“As part of BPI’s customer obsession culture, we have developed the Mobile Check deposit feature on the BPI app, allowing customers to conveniently transact anytime, anywhere. While the channel to transact is new, the same rules on clearing remain the same, thus customer need not worry about any delays in crediting the deposits to their accounts,” said Fitzgerald Chee, Head of Consumer Platforms.
The Mobile Check Deposit feature is currently accessible to BPI Preferred, BPI Gold, and BPI Private Wealth clients without any fees. Local checks below PHP 500,000 can be deposited via the app and clients can monitor deposit status as an added feature.
The following details are required to be written on the back of the check before depositing it through the BPI app: “Bank of the Philippine Islands” or “BPI”, date of the check deposit (MM/DD/YYYY), BPI account number, and client signature. Physical copy of the check must also be kept for 12 months in case of dispute.
Clients may also deposit any time. For checks deposited after 3PM (PHT), or on weekends and holidays, it will be processed the next banking day.
With this feature of the BPI app, BPI continues to digitalize transactions as part of its Phygital strategy. “As everyday transactions are migrated onto its digital platforms, branches can now take on a more advisory role -- helping our clients do more and maximize opportunities to grow their funds,” Chee added.

Digital transactions in the Philippines have reached a new milestone, with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reporting a rise in digital payment transactions from 42.1% in 2022 to 52.8% in 2023. vivo has significantly upgraded its mid-range smartphone with vivo Y28’s premium look, featuring a metallic high-gloss frame that adds a touch of sophistication to its vibrant color. Weighing only 199g and measuring 8.09mm thick, it’s remarkably slim and lightweight, making it comfortable to hold for extended periods. The back of the smartphone is a composite plastic material decorated with glitter particles that shimmer under light, creating a dynamic flow pattern that I had fun playing with. Vivo also retains its signature small logo at the bottom left corner.
Looking closely at the camera module, I noticed a subtle yet elegant 3D diamond pattern on the sides, making the camera look even better. Also, the dynamic light feature (the small circle beside the second camera lens) is reminiscent of a small “aura light” design, enhancing its visual appeal.
The front camera design of the vivo Y28 has been upgraded to a hole-punch style, providing more screen space for a better viewing and editing experience. The vivo Y28 boasts an eye-catching overall design, and its gleaming orange finish adds a touch of satisfying vibrancy. But if this color is not your style, the vivo Y28 also comes in agate green, giving off a forest vibe.

vivo’s ability to create eye-catching devices is undeniable. The vivo Y28’s design is so sophisticated that I initially mistook it for a flagship smartphone. Its fresh
appearance caught my eye immediately because of its major glow-up over its predecessor. A minor complaint is that its back cover material could be prone to fingerprint smudges during prolonged use. Happily, it is bundled with a clear jelly case that can help protect against smudging to maintain a pristine appearance.
Beyond its impressive color and design, the vivo Y28 also delivers solid performance. As a mid-range smartphone, the main camera takes decent photos, but image quality may be inconsistent. With good lighting, image colors are vibrant and details are sharp. However, in low light or when zooming in, image quality can deteriorate (same with the front camera). As for shooting videos, the main and front cameras can capture videos in 1080p and 720p at 30 frames per second. However, the videos can be slightly grainy and shaky due to the low frame rate and lack of stabilization.
The miniature dynamic light feature of the vivo Y28 isn’t just for a show; it serves a practical purpose that is convenient for busy individuals. For example, it can alert you to notifications, count down during selfies, and even dance to your music. You can customize its blinking behavior with
three settings: dynamic for rapid blinking, rhythm for normal blinking, and soft for slow blinking. So, even when placed face it down, the smartphone can still alert you through this additional feature. The 90Hz responsive display of the vivo Y28 is able to deliver smooth scrolling and animations.
In the realm of gaming and entertainment, the vivo Y28 may not be a powerhouse but it delivers solid performance for casual gamers and entertainment enthusiasts. I was able to play Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with a high frame rate and medium graphics for clear visuals and responsive controls, allowing me to easily navigate and engage with the action. For Call of Duty, I set the graphics to low and the frame rate to medium. Although this means the visuals aren’t as crisp, the game remains playable and runs without major issues.
In addition, the vivo Y28’s Ultra Game Mode provided helpful customization options to optimize the gaming experience. While the vivo Y28 performs well with less demanding games, it may heat up and lag when running more graphically intensive games like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves.
Overall, the vivo Y28 is an excellent entertainment companion. Its vibrant 1080p display, dual stereo speakers, and powerful volume booster that reaches up
to 300% make it ideal for movies, games, and music. Even at maximum volume, the audio quality remains impressive, with clear vocals and distinct melodies. Although the bass may be subtle when playing music, it’s still noticeable and adding depth to the sound.
With all of these upgraded features, the vivo Y28 still manages to deliver impressive battery life. Even with regular use, including streaming, browsing, and gaming, the battery often lasts well into the next day with 30-40% still remaining by the time you’re ready to recharge. However, as with any smartphone, your actual battery life may vary depending on how intensively you use power-hungry features like in gaming. But overall, the Y28 strikes an excellent balance between performance and battery longevity, making it a dependable companion for day-to-day tasks.
Priced at PHP7,999 for the 8GB+128GB model and PHP9,999 for the 8GB+256GB version, the vivo Y28 offers options to suit different needs. The higher price of the 256GB version may raise some eyebrows, but the extra storage could be worth the investment for those who need it. Meanwhile, the 128GB version offers excellent value, providing a solid balance of features and performance.

Last year, we reviewed the HONOR X6a, a budget smartphone that had some compromises but was a good basic smartphone. HONOR has updated the X6 lineup with the HONOR X6b, which comes with a much more powerful processor, more RAM, and a more durable body — all at an affordable price.
The HONOR X6b carries the same design elements found in last year’s HONOR X6a. It has the same boxy design and a square camera setup.
The HONOR X6b comes in three distinct colors: Forest Green, Starry Purple, and Midnight Black. Our Forest Green test unit looks great; it has a smooth back with a matte finish, plus the added shine effects add to its appeal.
You’ll immediately notice the heft when you take the phone out of the box. It’s not heavy but rather something that you can hold with confidence. Compared to other similarly-priced devices, you can immediately tell that the build quality of the HONOR X6b stands out. This is not surprising as HONOR received a 5-star rating from Switzerland’s SGS for the X6b durability (more on this later).
The device features a 6.56-inch TFT LCD display with a 720 x 1612 resolution. The display has a 90 Hz refresh rate and 780 nits of max brightness. Also on the front is the 5-megapixel selfie camera. At the back is the square camera bump with its dual-camera setup. On the left is the sim and microSD tray, while on the right is the volume rocker and the power button, which doubles as the fingerprint reader. Finally, beneath the phone is a 3.5mm headphone port, a USB Type-C charging port, and a single downward-firing speaker.
In terms of size, the HONOR X6b has a dimension of 163.6 x 75.3 x 8.4mm, almost the same as the HONOR X6a. It’s a bit heavier at 192g due to the SGS-rated protection HONOR added to the device.
The HONOR X6b is powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 processor. The processor is not the most powerful, considering it’s already four years old. That said, it still is capable of performing everyday tasks. Paired with the processor are 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The RAM is expandable to another 6GB with HONOR’s RAM Turbo.
During testing, the G85 processor showed its age. While it can still run games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Genshin Impact (surprisingly), you’ll have to compromise graphic quality for smoother gameplay. I found that Mobile Legend’s sweet spot was a high frame rate with a medium setting. Meanwhile, Genshin Impact was playable in the lowest setting.
What’s impressive are the phone’s thermals. Despite heavy testing, the HONOR X6b did not heat up. Even during benchmarking, the phone remained cool and still raring to go.
Speaking of benchmarks, here are the numbers I got from the device: 245282 for Antutu v10.3.4, 434 single core and 1369 multi-core for Geekbench 6, 7334 Work 3.0 for PCMark on Android, and finally 743 in 3Dmark’s Wild Life.
In the camera department, the HONOR X6b has a 50-megapixel main shooter at the back paired with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Unlike last year’s HONOR X6a, the camera has no dedicated macro lens. At the front is a 5-megapixel selfie camera. In terms of video, the HONOR X6b can shoot 1080p videos with up to 30fps.
The camera is not as capable as the more expensive HONOR X-b series, but it still gets good images with good lighting. Outdoor shots are reasonably sharp, and the added AI processing gives a more
vivid output. As for low-light and night mode, you’ll want to find a tripod or a stable hand for better effect.
For video, 1080p is sufficient if you have a tripod or a gimbal; otherwise, there is no stabilization whatsoever.
Finally, the Honor X6b has a 5200mAh battery similar to last year’s model. However, HONOR upgraded the charging speed to 35W fast charging, now capable of powering the device from 10% to 100% in just over an hour.
The HONOR X6b is a great budget-level phone. Its major strength lies in its decent processor and RAM combo. While the MediaTek Helios G85 may not be the latest, it delivers on most everyday tasks.
What makes the HONOR X6b stand out is its durability. As mentioned earlier, the HONOR X6b has a five-star rating from SGS. The device has collision reinforcement on its corners, buffer and anti-drop architecture, and a forcedistributed design. This is a phone that can withstand most accidents and mishaps.
HONOR is so confident in its durability that they encourage reviewers to try
to drop-test the device. Of course, we obliged, and after a few drops from different angles (face first, sides first, backside first, etc.) onto tile flooring and a wood table, the device carried on as if nothing happened. However, we don’t encourage anyone to do this at home, as deliberate damage voids any warranty.
Another thing I like about the phone is its 5200mAh battery that just kept chugging along. I got around two days’ worth of regular use — a bit of gaming here and there, and maybe an hour or two of Netflix at night. The large display was also great for binge-watching videos.
Speaking of media binging, one thing that is disappointing about the HONOR X6b is its speaker. The single speaker, although loud, lacked depth. Fortunately, it still has a 3.5mm headphone port, which is relatively rare among current smartphones.
The HONOR X6b is powered by MagicOS 8.0 based on Android 14. Part of the UI’s feature is HONOR’s Magic Capsule feature. Magic Capsule turns the device’s small notch into an added notification bar under certain apps. Currently supported apps are the device’s timer, recorder, and media player. The Magic Capsule does recognize YouTube and Spotify although both are displayed as a media player. Hopefully, HONOR can continue expanding the recognized apps as they update the feature.
Coming in at just PHP6,999 the HONOR X6b has a very persuasive price point. What it lacks in certain aspects, it more than makes up for in others. Overall, it is a satisfactorily balanced phone for those on a tight budget.

Xiaomi has elevated its smart band series with the new Xiaomi Smart Band 9. Offering more than just fitness tracking, this smart band seamlessly combines fashion and function to keep you in control of your goals while effortlessly maintaining your style day in and day out.
Xiaomi has improved the appearance of the Smart Band 9, adding an aluminum alloy frame and NCVM (Non-Conductive Vacuum Metallization) texture in a mystic rose color for a more luxurious feel and a metallic-like finish. The smartwatch features a bright 1.62-inch AMOLED touch display with a 192x490-pixel resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and up to 1200nits of brightness (which you can adjust or leave on auto mode). Whether
in bright sunlight or a darker room, the screen stays clear and responsive, making it easy to use anytime. The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 weighs a mere 15.8 grams without the strap and measures 46.5 x 21.6 x 10.95mm for a comfortable and lightweight fit.
The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 retains its TPU band material, offering flexibility and durability. It has an adjustable size range of 135-210mm. Wearing it on my left wrist was easy and comfortable, thanks to the adjustable sizing that lets it fit snugly or
loosely based on personal preference. I also tried it on my right wrist, and it felt just as comfortable, though inserting the band was a bit tricky. Beyond its sleek and practical exterior, the Smart Band 9 shines with its customizable watch faces. The choice of designs allowed me to easily switch up the look to match my mood or fashion style, making the smartwatch feel uniquely tailored to me.

The upgrades aren’t limited to design—the sensors are better, too. The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 has an improved 2-channel PPG dual light system and a single PD sensor, making it more accurate and responsive. It features a linear resonant actuator that makes the vibrations super precise, so you’ll notice them for notifications, calls, or when the timer goes off. The vibration strength has been boosted by 40%, making it more noticeable. Also, the sound has been dialed down from 46dB to 40dB, so it’s much subtler.
This smartwatch has a high-precision 6-axis sensor, heart rate monitor, blood oxygen sensor, and ambient light sensor. I was hoping for extras like an ECG monitor, hydration tracker, or body composition analysis, which have been left out, given the price point. Nevertheless, it’s still a solid smartwatch to use.
Regarding connectivity, the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 has the upgraded Bluetooth 5.4 for a fast and much more stable connection. I experienced this seamlessly through notifications from my smartphone, and
data syncing with the Mi Fitness App. It is compatible with Android 8.0 and up, and iOS 12.0 or higher. With 5ATM waterresistance, it held up while I was washing dishes and sweating through workouts.
But what really amazed me while testing the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 is its battery life. With the upgrade to a 233mAh battery, it lasted much longer than I expected. I’ve been able to go several days on a single charge, even with regular use like tracking workouts and getting notifications.
Two words for its appearance: lightweight and stylish. That’s what hit me as soon as I strapped on the Xiaomi Smart Band 9. It’s super comfortable because I can easily adjust the strap to fit exactly how I like it. The material of the strap is also a winner— it’s soft and doesn’t irritate or scratch my skin, no matter how long I wear it. The sleek design works whether I’m sweating from working out or just running errands. On the other hand, I can see how some might find it a bit too small, especially for those who prefer a bigger screen. But for anyone who values comfort and subtlety,
this is a solid choice. While I wasn’t able to explore the style options offered by other bands, but I was able to play around with the variety of watch faces. While they’re pretty standard, they still offer a nice range to match different moods and styles.
After a few days with the Xiaomi Smart Band 9, I’ve been monitoring my heart rate, sleep, and running data, and it’s mostly accurate. The heart rate monitor provides consistent readings whether I’m resting or exercising. The sleep tracking offers a good overview of my sleep quality, including light sleep, deep sleep, REM, and wake-ups. Just a quick tip—make sure to wear it snugly while sleeping to ensure the most accurate sleep tracking data.
The running metrics are pretty reliable for distance and pace. One thing I wish it had, though, is a running map on the smartwatch so I can track my route instead of just seeing it through the Mi Fitness App. I also tested the 5ATM water resistance of the Xiaomi Smart Band 9, and it passed with flying colors. I dunked it in water for about 10 minutes, and it still works just fine. I could even turn it on while it was underwater, though swiping through the interface was a bit tricky—
so the touch responsiveness isn’t great underwater. Still, it’s reassuring to know it can handle some water without any problems.
I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I have to say it again—the battery life of the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 is truly impressive. It was able to last for about 3 weeks on a single charge, even with regular use of tracking features, checking notifications, and monitoring workouts. This added a lot of convenience since I barely had to think about the battery life. The charging performance is also great. It goes from 7% to 100% in just a few minutes, so I rarely had to wait long for it to charge. This quick turnaround is perfect for those times when I need a fast power-up and want to get back to using it without delay, especially on busy days. Its impressive longevity and fast charging are the standout features that add a lot of value to the band.
Xiaomi has managed to keep the Smart Band 9 budget-friendly at PHP1,999
while ensuring it doesn’t skimp on style or functionality. For that price, you get a smartwatch that combines essential health-tracking features with a sleek design, and a powerful battery. It is an attractive choice for those who want a smartwatch that’s both practical and chic.

One of Smart’s key initiatives is to broaden the reach of 5G technology by making it affordable and accessible to Filipinos. With this goal in mind, they are introducing the ZTE Blade A75 5G. This mid-range smartphone combines affordability with impressive features and is designed to deliver a seamless Smart 5G experience.
The ZTE Blade A75 5G stands out with its main camera size and placement, highlighting its photographic capabilities. The centrally positioned camera lens serves as a focal point for the design and adds to the smartphone’s visual appeal, giving the smartphone a sleek, DSLR-inspired look. Although the camera’s size might seem vulnerable in terms of durability, this smartphone includes a transparent jelly protective case and screen protector for added protection. Apart from its camera design, the back of the smartphone features a minimalist look. Coated in a sky-mirror glass of pure black with glittering particles, ZTE calls this variant “Diamond Black,” which exudes a sophisticated and poised vibe, enhancing its overall elegance. For a more vibrant option, the ZTE Blade A75 5G is also available in “Mint Green.”
This smartphone weighs about 204.2g, making it slightly heavier than average, likely due to its larger main camera. Despite this, the weight doesn’t entirely affect the portability or gaming comfort. Other than its weight, the ZTE Blade A75 5G size is 163.6 x 74.9 x 8.6mm, which is fairly comfortable to hold and use. The ZTE Blade A75 5G features a dual SIM card tray on the left side and a USB-Type C charging

The ZTE Blade A75 5G has a lot going for it, though there are a couple of limitations to be aware of. But let’s talk about its camera performance. Its 50MP main camera delivers impressive photos, though you might notice slightly less vibrant colors than higherend models. It also offers a variety of color filters to personalize your photos. However, I encountered some issues when taking multiple shots. The camera’s responsiveness tends to lag, causing a delay that sometimes results in blurry images. Its 2MP bokeh depth sensor could be improved as it sometimes struggles to blur the background accurately, occasionally focusing on the subject instead.
The front camera performs well under proper lighting, delivering decent selfies. However, you might notice some graininess and a lack of vivid colors, especially in less optimal conditions. Don’t expect top-tier quality when it comes to video recording on the main and front cameras. Although it supports 720p, 1080p, and even 4K resolution, the frame rate is capped at 30fps, which can result in grainy footage, especially in lower light. Also, since there’s no built-in stabilization,
videos may appear shaky, particularly when capturing handheld shots or movement.
Now, let’s talk about its Smart 5G performance. I used this smartphone as my hotspot while working, and I have to admit, it delivered fast internet speeds.
Based on the test using Ookla’s Speedtest, it achieved impressive download speeds of 103Mbps and upload speeds of 15.9Mbps, which is more than adequate for handling demanding online activities such as streaming videos, working through documents, and downloading files. Plus, the 128GB storage capacity of
this smartphone stood out. It provides ample space for downloading games, capturing numerous photos and videos, and installing apps like Spotify and Netflix without running out of room. But if you’re curious whether this smartphone can work with other SIM cards, such as Globe, it’s important to note that it is locked to Smart, TNT, and SUN networks.
When it comes to gaming, the ZTE Blade A75 5G handles light gaming well. I was able to play Mobile Legends: Bang Bang smoothly with high frame rates and high graphics settings. I’ve also been playing Cats & Soup: Fluffy Town, and the
graphics are impressively clear and welldetailed for such a light game. You can play more demanding games like Genshin Impact, but only with the graphics set to the lowest setting. Also, keep in mind that the device may heat up, and you might experience some lag during gameplay. With a 6.6-inch display, this smartphone delivers a good viewing experience for movies and gaming, and the 120Hz refresh rate adds fluidity.
The speaker is a significant downside, as the sound quality remains weak even at maximum volume due to having only one speaker. For better audio experience, headphones or an external speaker are definitely recommended.

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) concluded the National Finals of its premier e-motorsports tournament, the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup Philippines (TGR GT Cup PH), on August 18, 2024, in a thrilling live event at the SM Mall of Asia.
Held live for the first time in a public venue, the TGR GT Cup PH Finals drew large crowds as top sim racers in the country put the pedal to the metal of their racing rigs for a chance to bring home cash prizes, exclusive TGR merchandise, Autocross Challenge seats, and the honor of representing the Philippines at the Asia Finals.
The Finals began with the Quarterfinals on August 17. The Top 40 fastest e-racers from the qualifiers battled it out on Trial Mountain in the Toyota GR Yaris RZ “High Performance” ‘20. The participants were seeded into four batches of 10 players each, and each batch went head-to-head for three race heats. The
first race held a qualifying time trial to set the grid, while the second race put winners of the first race at the back of the grid in an exciting reverse grid. The third race once again had the racers put in their fastest lap for a chance to start higher on the grid.
Past TGR GT Cup PH Sporting Class champion Luis Moreno and defending champion Russel Reyes solidified their places as top contenders, winning all three races of their respective batches. Past Junior Class champion Enzo Ison also dominated his batch.

The Semifinals pitted the Top 20 on the Suzuka Circuit in the Toyota GR Supra RZ ’20. Similar to the Quarterfinals, the Semifinals held three race heats for two batches of 10 players each. Qualifying time trials were done for the first and third races, while the second race reversed the grid, putting the top placers of race one at the back. Weather conditions, which were chosen at random, were thrown into the races to further test the skill of the drivers. The first race was met with drizzle, the second race with dry weather, and the third race with fullon rain.
Race one of the first batch of the Semifinals saw Luis Moreno crossing the finish line with an eight-second lead from the rest of the pack, with Jether Miole in second after a close fight with Enzo Ison, who finished third. Ison then went on to win the second race, with Moreno and Miole close behind. The third race was dominated by Moreno with Ison and Miole rounding up the second and third spots.
Russel Reyes drove strong and steady to maintain his lead after starting from pole position in the first race of the second batch, which he won. Matthew Ang and Stanley Golez followed right behind in second and third. The second race saw similar results to that of batch one, with Ang taking the win, and Reyes and Golez in second and third, respectively. The same three e-racers dominated the rainy third race, with Russel Reyes in first place, Matthew Ang in second, and Stanley Golez in third.
For the National Finals, three different tracks with three different cars were introduced for the three race heats. E-racers sped through the Deep Forest in the Toyota GR Yaris RZ “High Performance” 20 for the first race, the Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in the Toyota GR 86 RZ ‘21 for the second race, and finally, the Fuji International Speedway in the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept ‘18.
With 10 of the best players remaining, tension was high with the races seeing more wheel-to-wheel action as the top e-racers pushed their limits on the
virtual racetracks. Players who were put in different batches in the earlier races faced each other for the first time in the National Finals. This was met with enthusiasm from the audience as cheers echoed in the SM Mall of Asia for their favorite racers.
Russel Reyes took pole position in the first race but was overtaken by Luis Moreno who went on to win the race after undercutting Reyes in a clever pit strategy. The second race was a reverse grid, which put Moreno at the back with Reyes and Ison in front of him. Race two ended with Moreno
on top after making his way to the front of the pack, followed by Ison in second, and Reyes in third. For the third race, positions were reversed once again based on the results of race two, and dynamic weather conditions were enabled. Moreno delivered a masterclass with his pit strategy, which put him ahead of Ison and Reyes, but behind Jether Miole, the race leader. A mistake cost Miole the lead, and Moreno was quick to take advantage of the opportunity.
The final lap of the last race was met with adrenaline-filled action as Moreno made contact with another driver, putting Ang in the lead. Race three ended with Ang in first place, Moreno in second, and Ison in third.
Official results were announced, revealing Luis Moreno as the TGR GT Cup PH 2024 Champion with 75 points, Enzo Ison in 2nd Place with 48 points, and Russel Reyes in 3rd Place with 45 points. Special awards were
also given to Ison for Driver of the Day and Matthew Ang for Fastest Lap.
“This has been a fun event. Thank you so much for giving us sim racers the opportunity to have another shot at the [TGR GT Cup]. Hopefully there’s more to come,” shared Russel Reyes.

Visa cards can be used to pay on modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City, creating a seamless transit experience and inclusive acceptance for daily commuters and tourists in the Philippines
Visa, a world leader in digital payments, is collaborating with Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI), a transit mobility solutions provider, and GHL, a leading nationwide payment service provider and payment acquirer. This collaboration has enabled the use of Visa cards for payments on modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City, the second biggest city in Cebu.
The initiative kicked off with an official launch ceremony at the Cebu IT Park Transport Terminal, with Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI) working in partnership with local transport operators, Lahug Apas Transport Cooperative (LATRANSCO) and Mandaue Transport Cooperative (MTC), to launch 120 modern jeepneys in Cebu and 20 modern jeepneys in Mandaue City. The onboard terminals in these vehicles now accept Visa payments. This initiative, part of a pilot project, signifies Visa’s commitment to promoting transit acceptance in the Philippines with plans to expand to more modes of transit in coming years.

From the first point (Shell North Edsa), YClub traveled to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, where everyone made memories that were more than just a ride.

The year 2020 reshaped our general perspective, but that doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned the things we’re passionate about. This comeback activity came with a twist! Starting the weekend right, YMPH gathered 120 YClub members with 3 different classifications to represent the diverse Yamaha products. Instead of following the traditional one-route touring activity, Yamaha created three different routes with 40 riders each to let everyone feel more excitement with every twist of a throttle.
Exuding elegance and premium aura, the NMAX riders prepared for the route where a classy adventure awaited. Their assigned route let them feel the NMAX high-class comfort and maximum reliability during long rides. On top of the riding experience, riders got to experience being a golfer
as they participated in the golf putting activity in Subic.
The second group took a different route to fully unleash the performance of Sniper155 and Mio Aerox. They took a route filled with exhilarating curves and experienced a Moto Gymkhana activity, Japan’s popular motorcycle time trial sport.
The third route captured the aesthetics of Mio 125cc riders (Mio Gear, Mio Gravis, Mio Fazzio). It offered a scenic vibe with a balance of stimulating calls for adventure every step of the way. Riders were greeted with a challenge to be creative by making Latte Art – fully expressing themselves just as how their motorcycles suit their lifestyle. All routes led to one destination, Las
Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, where all 120 riders shared what they had experienced throughout the day. The next day, completing the 281km adventure, YClub members ride to Mount Samat to seal off the entire touring experience with a photo op.

Studying the pressing problems of today’s Filipino communities, the participants created scienceforward solutions that matter for the people who
need them most. After months of hard work on concept mapping, intensive training, and a dedicated build period where they brought their ideas to life, the top two schools made their final presentation on July 25-26, 2024.
Based on the criteria of novelty and patentability, functionality and unique selling point, collaboration, design and feasibility, extensibility, and practicability, three schools were awarded the Youth Innovation Prize (YIP).

(Smart) team up with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) to launch Innovation Generation 4.0 (InnoGen 4.0) with the theme Innovation for All. The program calls on the tech-savvy youth to pitch their technology-enabled solution that empowers persons with disabilities.

InnoGen provides more than just financial and connectivity grants. It offers a rich learning
environment through lectures, workshops, and mentoring sessions, fostering knowledge sharing and technological skill development.
From the submitted entries, PLDT, Smart, and NCDA will initially admit the best 100 ideas in Phase 1, with the teams becoming part of the Kilo 100. These teams will take part in the first learning sessions on Concept Development, which include Design Thinking and Ideation, Basic Validation, and Writing and Designing proposals.
After submitting their concept papers, the top 50 teams will advance to Phase 2, or the Mega 50. During this phase, qualified teams will dive deeper into user research to anchor their solutions on the actual needs of their intended customers. They will also have opportunities to join mentoring sessions with tech mavericks who offer real-world experience in the start-up scene. The teams’ objective is to come up with the best value proposition, lean canvas, mockup, and/or wireframe.
After deliberations, the Top 25 teams will enter the final phase, or the Giga 25. Lecturing and mentoring sessions will tackle Basic Prototyping, Integrated Payment Platforms, Data Privacy, and Idea Pitching. The teams will work on a minimum viable product of their proposed solution, which will be presented on Demo Day.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) will soon be better equipped to handle and respond to emergencies, natural disasters, human-induced incidents, and other distress calls.
The E911 National Office, through its executive director Francis Fajardo, has facilitated the trial of a cutting-edge, next-generation 911 system that will provide the PNP with world-class emergency response capabilities like that used in the US and Europe.
Fajardo takes his cue from the current administration’s focus on quick response and resilience in the face of disasters and emergencies. Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin Abalos has also issued a directive to adapt the national emergency program to the digital age by making it useful for all public emergency calls countrywide.
In line with this, Fajardo asked NGA 911/NGCS to provide the
national police with its patented call-handling system. NGA 911 Philippines/NGCS is a subsidiary of NGA 911 LLC (Next Generation Advanced 911), the global innovator of emergency calling technology and leader in next-generation emergency communications worldwide
The state-of-the-art NGA 911 call handling system will let the PNP respond to distress calls and provide emergency response at unprecedented speed, accurately pinpointing location.

The call handling system that the PNP will trial will include the hardware, software, data, and all the procedures and policies related to answering every emergency request for help.

We can integrate with the local government’s CCTV systems and provide enhanced location and situational awareness for front liners and first responders. Morong, Rizal, is the first municipality in the country and Southeast Asia to harness NGA 911’s next-generation advanced technology to provide leveled-up public safety and service to its residents. Alaminos in Pangasinan, Cagayan De Oro City, and Cebu City will soon also have their nextgeneration emergency response command centers in place.

The Quezon City government and tech-enabled express logistics company Ninja Van Philippines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to extend vital support to the city’s local businesses, particularly those in e-commerce.
The MOU was signed by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Ninja Van Philippines country head Jose Alvin Perez, and Ninja Van Philippines chief commercial officer and regional head of marketing Sabina LopezVergara. and Markets) on Wheels, a mobile entrepreneurship caravan that brings business support services directly to MSMEs nationwide. At these events, Sun Life financial advisors will provide financial consultations, helping entrepreneurs future-proof their business and personal goals.

Y2K BUG
Ihave been with Gadgets for about half of its existence—a long time in terms of technological advances. Since then, smartphones and other gadgets have only gotten better. There were moments of uncertainty in the technology world, and one of them just happens to be one that I bore witness to— the Y2K bug. Why was it such a big deal, and what came out of it?
Most reports centered around the Y2K bug came about because computers read dates as two digits—for example, January 1, 1999 read as 1/1/99, and thus the clock turning over to January 1, 2000 would cause confusion as computers would read it as not January 1, 2000, but rather, January 1, 1900, or 1/1/00. The reason dates only read two digits instead of four is because mainframe computers and personal computing memory was expensive. Some reports priced memory at USD10/KB to over USD100/KB in 1975 (USD59.10-USD591.03 in 2024 dollars), and in attempts to lower the prices and make them accessible to everyone, many manufacturers chose to use two digits for the date instead of four. The assumption for this was to expand use of computers at the cost of allegedly rendering them useless by the year 2000.
The earliest reports of the Y2K bug began as far back in 1958, when Bob Bemer noticed that this would be an issue when he was working with genealogical software. He attempted to bring this issue up with various stakeholders ranging from fellow programmers to IBM to the United States federal government and even international organizations such as t he International Organization for Standardization for 20 years,
recommending the COBOL picture clause should be used to specify four digit years for dates.
The first time that this issue was addressed online was as early as 1985 on a Usenet newsgroup. Spencer Bolles said, “I have a friend that raised an interesting question that I immediately tried to prove wrong. He is a programmer and has this notion that when we reach the year 2000, computers will not accept the new date. Will the computers assume that it is 1900, or will it even cause a problem?” His questions began to gain traction in the 1990s, when Computerworld ran an article by Peter de Jager about “Doomsday 2000” and other programmers, such as David Eddy, coined the term Y2K in 1995.
The problem even gained the attention of the United States Department of Defense. “The Y2K problem is the electronic equivalent of the El Nino and there will be nasty surprises around the globe,” said former United States Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre. The brokerage industry made moves to address this in the 1980s, namely because bonds had maturity dates beyond the year 2000. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) hired 100 programmers to address these issues, spending USD20 million on the Y2K issue.
Date programming had to be changed as well; credit card systems saw bugs as early as 1997, with processing issues happening with cards that had expiration dates beyond the year 2000 and a lawsuit even filed over this issue. Microsoft Excel, the C programming language, JavaScript, UNIX, and the Windows 3.x file manager had to make adjustments, not to mention a slew of other programs, applications,
and more. Some solutions, such as date expansion to four digits, date 3indowing, date compression, and more were also proposed for legacy systems.
What happened on January 1, 2000 itself? Anything that used a computer was affected, but the extent varied. Reports from various countries included minor glitches such as deleting new text messages to nuclear plant radiation monitoring systems failing in Japan, a video store incorrectly assessing a USD92,150 late fee due to a tape being 100 years overdue in the United States, 30,000 cash registers printing receipts with 1900 dates in Greece, and more. It is estimated that the cost of the work done to prepare for Y2K was more than USD300 billion, although a final cost may be unknown due to the variation of errors and the severity of such errors. A recent software failure by CrowdStrike in 2024 also brought down computers worldwide and was also compared to the Y2K bug.
After January 1, 2000 came and went with much fanfare and (relatively) little effect on technology, people got back to their lives with ever-increasing importance on gadgets and technology. While there are many issues that technology still has to address to this very day, people are now more proactive than ever with events similar to Y2K. In fact, I myself learned about issues involving the year 2010 and 2022 which went virtually unnoticed compared to Y2K. While we continue to rely on technology, we have to be proactive about solving issues created by technology as well, and the Y2K bug was one of the examples where prevention helped, even though the impact was not as big as people expected it to be.
