a few words from our editor
N
ETWORKING used to be just a buzzword among the business circles. One “networks” to meet other people, develop friendships or professional alliances, find employment and conduct business-to-business marketing. These days, networking has taken on a different meaning. Now you don’t have to attend meetings, conferences or cocktail parties to “network.” You can just go online and begin to socialize. Social networking has now become one of the most active web-based activities in the Philippines, with Filipinos being declared as the most active users on a number of web-based social network sites such as Friendster, Multiply, Facebook, and now Twitter. The use of social networking website has become so extensive that the country has once-again received a new tag—it’s now “The Social Networking Capital of the World” with 83 percent of Filipinos surveyed are members of a social network. We’re also now the nation of top photo uploaders and web video viewers. Social networking has become such a part of the Filipino cyberculture that it is now being used in the Philippines not only as a form of advertising, but also as election campaign material, as well as a tool to aid in criminal investigation. Technology has allowed us to conduct our “social networking” a bit easier. Laptops, netbooks, smartphones are available practically anywhere; your choice will actually depend on your needs and budgets. Now social networking has even broken into the realm of television with “smart” internet TVs on offer from practically all electronics manufacturers. The real limitation now is the data transfer rate offered by our friendly telecom providers (although that’s another story).
This month, we’re doing the social networking bit with a summer twist. We’ll give you the 101 on how you can network from home, attend eyeball parties, take on MMORPG enthusiasts, listen to music from the “cloud” or even do a little good while playing games via Alter Space. Our cover girl, cosplay goddess Alodia Gosiengfiao, will be our companion through this sunny, sizzling season. Armin A. Amio EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

May2011
JVC’s GZ-HM450 looks quite impressive out of the box. Its glossy black exterior and minimalist design gives the product a classically neat look. Users will immediately notice that this camcorder is lightweight yet solid in its build. However, don’t expect this camcorder to survive an accidental encounter with the brute force of gravity. Overall, the HM450’s size and weight make it a perfect fit in one’s palm, especially when shooting at difficult angles and/or for extended periods of time.
22
Opening up the side panel reveals the 2.7-inch touchscreen LCD display, which is relatively vivid and clear in its own right, but it might not impress the more serious amateur filmmaker expecting pristine playback. JVC has incorporated touchscreen navigation, and while it is definitely intuitive (as it allows the chassis to be minimal of physical controls), some users might find the surface area of the display quite small to accurately navigate. Nevertheless, the touchscreen is rather responsive and will pose no catastrophic hurdles.
able to quickly navigate through this camcorder’s basic features.
prone to struggle when light sources were scarce.
Equipped with Image Stabilization technology, any shots taken with the HM450 will be free of camera shake, unless of course you decide to dabble in its epic 40x zoom capability. While this level of magnification is a great feature to have, one might discover that it will not be needed on a day-to-day basis. Moreover, such extreme zooming functionality degrades image quality to a pixilated mess, unless of course it is for a creative purpose.
Another interesting trait is the Face Sub-Window which allows users to record a close-up shot of a single person while simultaneously shooting a group of people. This is achieved by simply touching the face on the display that you want to enlarge. While in theory this feature sounds quite useful, it takes quite a bit of practice and awareness to fully utilize it, and is definitely more of a novelty than a necessity.
Browsing the menus can be quite daunting in the beginning because some of the icons have no text descriptions describing its particular function. Users might find themselves initially playing the guessing game because of this. With some consultation from the manual and good memory work, one will be
This Everio camcorder also comes with the Intelligent Auto feature which performs equally smart as well, helping users to get the perfect take by adjusting brightness and color to cater to the scene that is being shot. While the HM450 did perform excellently with regulating contrast and hues, the autofocus was

With the features out of the way, the most obvious query would be video quality. Shooting at 24Mbps high bit rate recording at 1920x1080i through a Konica Minolta HD lens, the HM450 seems impressive. However, with a 1.5-megapixel CMOS sensor, users should expect some minimal setbacks in overall image quality.
While this version of the Everio will definitely be a step up from your ancient point-and-shoot camera, it still seems a little expensive with regards to its features and quality. There are various point-and-shoot consumer cameras that have leveled up and can surpass the performance of the HM450, which might make consumers wonder what JVC had in mind. Nevertheless, one advantage that this camcorder has is its size and weight, making it a perfect companion for your travels. Granted, while it is considered a low-entry budget consumer camcorder, it will perform the necessary recording tasks while adding a few interesting bells and whistles along the way. Despite its drawbacks, the HM450 will ultimately preserve your memories, which is what really matters in the first place.

From the very first time I laid eyes on this beauty, I fell in love with it. The color and the thinness with the dotted rubberized-feel finish added glam and bit of masculinity to it. You’ll surely fall in love as well.
This is the first time I saw a laptop with speakers on its wrist-rest, and I thought it was a pretty amazing idea. We all know that netbooks often have “not-so-awesome” audio features, but the Toshiba NB520 proves us wrong. It has a built-in 2x2-watt Harman Kardon stereo speakers which releases crisp and
clear sounds. I tried playing games, watched videos and even listened to recordings while setting this device on its loudest. You could also connect an MP3 player on this netbook and use the speakers separately; you don’t even need to turn it on. This is perhaps the only netbook that makes it a must-have if only for its ultimate listening experience. Toshiba NB520 comes with a 10.1inch 1024 x 600px LED-backlit display and it can support 720p HD playback, just right for this little wonder. It is bundled with the
Toshiba bulletin board software where you can find help tips, computer care and make a real bulletin board. This provides users with customizable space where they can place a calendar, clock, to-do list and even photos and notes. It’s just a drag and drop program so you will surely find your way around. The speakers and the fine finish are pretty cool although I’m not really a fan of the touch pad, I felt the rough texture isn’t the best way to go. It was not too responsive for tracking and it’s left and right clicks buttons was located at the edge
of the laptop so they were hard to press. This could be the ultimate media netbook except for the low definition built-in web camera. The Toshiba NB250 would be perfect for users who enjoy their music, movies and other media. Users will be able to have a go with it for 8.5 hours when fully charged. So if you are specific about a netbook that can support your multimedia needs, the Toshiba NB520 is your perfect match.

The Nexus line of phones has always been more of a showcase of Android than anything else. The first variant, the HTC-made Nexus One, was a showcase of everything Android 2.1 (Éclair)—and the Nexus S is no exception. Made by Korean manufacturing giant Samsung, the Nexus S uses the next evolution of Android, the 2.3 Gingerbread. Aside from the regular code tweaks, Gingerbread leverages better power management, one-touch word selection/copy and paste and NFC (near field communication) capability.

The Nexus S has impressive tech specs: 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and, most importantly, a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Hummingbird chipset. The external build of the phone isn’t your typical slab of a smartphone. If you look closely at the unit, you’ll see that it has a slight upward curve to it, probably so the unit will fit better when you make and take phone calls. Aside from the volume rocker on the left side and the power/unlock key on the right, there’s a noticeable dearth of hard keys. Right on the bottom of the www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
bezel of the screen lies the four touch-sensitive buttons present in most Android builds.
it to the clipboard. Pressing on a word allows you to drag anchors up to the text you want to copy or edit.
The real star of the device, of course, is the software and in this case it’s the Honeycomb build of Android. There aren’t a lot of changes on the UI as most of the tweaks are actually done behind the scenes. The device feels tighter somehow and consumes a lot less juice than its Froyo-equipped brethren. One of the major UI changes probably lies in how the device handles the QWERTY keyboard, which now sports better functionality for word suggestions, copy and paste. Additionally, users are able to quickly select a word by pressing and holding it, then copying
As mentioned earlier, the Nexus S has NFC (near field communication capability) via a chip embedded on the back plastic cover. NFC is basically a set of short-range wireless technologies, typically requiring a distance of 4 cm or less, that allows devices to interact with NFC tags like posters, menus and the like. Ideally, you’ll be able to tap or wave your NFC-equipped device over a poster equipped with a NFC tag, which then gives you information about the product being featured in that particular poster. It’s all very new, and unfortunately there
weren’t any NFC tags near us that I could use the Nexus S with. As I mentioned before, the Nexus S is much more power-efficient than its Froyo-toting brethren. Other Android-equipped smartphones in the Nexus S class are barely able to go through a day before needing to be charged. The Nexus S is able to keep up with a day’s worth of use with moderate texting, browsing and video with enough juice left over for an additional half day of use. It’s also noticeably fast, and is able to tackle most of the games and apps in the Android Marketplace without issue.

There’s a huge selection of monitors available in the market these days. Everything from the standard 15-inch display to the utterly ridiculous 30-inch monsters can be had at a fantastically thin footprint and at a price that you can’t beat. Sadly, professional grade monitors aren’t as prolific. Thankfully, HP has decided to step up the game with the ZR series of monitors, and the subject of this month’s review is the 24-inch ZR24W. But don’t let the ZR24W’s lack of charm fool you. This is a very specialized monitor designed for photographers and other professionals who need accurate color reproduction for their works. The manual controls help move along color calibration faster than those annoying touchscreen dials, and the tradeoff for the unusually thick screen is that you get far better viewing angles than other skinnier models. The ZR24W uses IPS (In plane switching) technology, which is different from the TN (Twisted
Nematic) technology used in regular displays. In a nutshell, IPS displays have way better color reproduction and better viewing angles than regular TN displays. The result is you get extremely vivid colors, with no viewing angle issues whatsoever. One nice thing about the ZR24W’s whole setup is that the stand allows the monitor to swivel from - 45° to + 45°, and tilt from 5° to + 30°. While I don’t do a lot of Photoshop, I’m a huge movie buff, and the ZR24W lent itself well to my
large HD movie gallery. Of course, getting that much performance does come at a price, both literally and figuratively. The ZR24W uses more power than its other contemporaries, and its slower, 7ms speed may not impress some. And it’s certainly pricier. We haven’t been able to get a local price yet, but if overseas listings are any indication, you’re looking at least $420 (about Php 18,000) investment.
gadgetslab
Right off the bat you’ll see that the ZR24W cares not for form. Sure, it’s got the requisite industrial styling cues like sharp corners and dark gray-on-gray color scheme, but aside from that it’s built primarily for performance and reproducing the most accurate colors possible. There isn’t much in the way of touchscreen controls or any other frivolous gimmicks when it comes to changing the settings on this gigantic monster—it’s all manual buttons, located on the bottom right of the screen.

What does it mean to be labeled a “total package”? I guess when it comes to a person, it implies someone who is pretty much well-rounded. In the realm of compact cameras, the aforementioned standard is also present. Much like a person, the hundreds of cameras out there are measured up to a certain set of features—style and performance—that everyone deems important. With all the camera lines and brands trying to “compact” all these features together, I have yet to encounter one that is as complete as the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX10. Simply put, the DSC-TX10 is, by far, what I would call a total package. Here is a camera that does not put in mediocre features nor does it sacrifice one feature to make room for another.
May2011
Off the bat, the first thing about the DSC-TX10 is that it is a rugged action camera—waterproof (up to 16ft), shockproof (5ft drop), freeze-proof (14°F) and dustproof—making it one tough cookie. But the good thing is that function does not reflect fashion, because this camera does not look like your typical “all-proof” camera. It bears none of those rubber casings, bulky housing or hefty weight. Sony has wonderfully stuck to its classic Cyber-shot design—sleek, stylish, and streamlined. You will appreciate both its protective features, and the portable, easy-to-handle form it comes in. Clocking in at 95.6mm x 56.1mm x 17.9mm and weighing just 4.7 oz., the camera feels like just a stack of playing cards in your pocket. However, one downside is that the size may prove to be quite slippery in outdoor activities. In terms of its other specs, the
26
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
DSC-TX10 packs in a wallop of high performance. It uses a 16.2-megapixel back-illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS sensor which works well with Sony’s Carl Zeiss lens and 4x optical zoom to produce stunning high-resolution photos that have excellent low-light sensitivity and noise-free clarity. I was blown away with the clean and crisp photos the DSC-TX10 took in various settings, even when I tried it out in a dim garage studio where the optical image stabilization and 3200 ISO range proved to work at a good advantage. Photo colors were at a good balance, save for some hue issues that occur in backlit or high contrast situations. Other minor issues involved a lack of overall sharpness in wide-angle shots (despite the 25mm bright wide angle), and some grainy shots beyond ISO 800. The TX10 also allows you to shoot equally brilliant movies with capabilities for 1080i HD video, coupled with stereo sounds, optical zoom, and autofocus. The added HDMI output is also a nice touch when transferring and viewing videos at full clarity in any HD screen. This is again another high-performance surprise that is set inside such a stylish
compact camera. A large 3-inch touchscreen LCD occupies the rear face of the unit, and where the settings and operations can be found. Viewing was brilliant however, the interface was quite confusing and cluttered with so many options that you can get lost trying to tap away to find the right setting. It’s also good the camera design still included tactile buttons outside the screen that cover the more basic and important operations such as power, playback, shoot and zoom. Some buttons are also a bit too small or close together that, although the touchscreen is relatively responsive, you end up pressing multiple buttons at the same time. This is why I appreciated that Sony included a neat little stylus hanging on the strap of the unit. Even if does give you one more thing to handle during operation, it’s still good thinking on the part of the manufacturer. If you are fond of exploring different scenes and shooting modes, the TX10 will definitely not leave you wanting. It unfolds a nice set of shooting options that include: 3D still image,

background defocus, natural flash, soft skin mode, backlight correction, sweep multi-angle mode, Smile Shutter technology, and Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode. Sony was not kidding when it set off to give its consumers a “life without walls.” Bringing the 3D experience to more than just your television set, the Sony Vaio F Series is testament to this evolution, after which anything more real, and you’d have actual physical presence. This particular model sports a 16-inch premium black design that is not for the faint-hearted (in this case, meaning, not for the average user). Just looking at its depth and breadth of 398.5 x 35-45 x 271.5 mm, you know you’re not looking to find anything “cute” about this machine.
Now I may not know exactly what makes a laptop as great as it is in a more technical sense but I do know what’s cool and this Vaio knows how to amaze. It turns on and the keyboard lights up underneath, as if it were ushering you to experience something incredible (at least, that’s how I felt when I turned it on). Then it immediately sets everything up for you and once it does, you’re ready to start doing what you normally do on a laptop. I immediately go online and saw that the screen was incredibly crisp and bright, thanks to the 240 fps high frame rate of the LCD and because it also has Intel’s second-generation processor inside, which simply means (for all of the technical jargon the explanation of the processor came with) that your computer assures you a better visual

experience, sound quality, and energy efficiency. The sound is incredible with Intel High Definition Audio and Dolby Home Theater technology, so you’d probably rather watch movies on this thing than on your own TV. The Vaio also goes on standby when not in use in order to conserve energy and can last about 3-hours on full charge with average use.
seeing a few sample videos in 3D, I realized how our own 2D experience was no comparison and how we could’ve lived so long without it. It was crisp and incredibly clear with such depth and realism. Although after a while, my eyes did begin to hurt somewhat. Perhaps these poor eyes need a bit more getting used to seeing things in 3D.
But I suppose the highlight of this PC is its 3D capabilities. This laptop uses Nvidia’s 3D Vision technology and comes with its own Sony glasses – the same glasses that come with the Sony Bravia 3D HDTVs, which use a built-in IR emitter. The glasses look very high-end and durable, with a nice curve that fits the face snugly. I could even wear them comfortably on top of my own thick, librarian-looking frames. When you first turn on the Sony Vaio, it helps you start up the whole 3D experience so you can see if your glasses are working properly or if you’re seeing in 3D properly. After
Aside from watching 3D videos and 3D movies, it has a Blu-ray drive, so you can also watch Blu-ray 3D movies with it on the Full HD screen. Gaming is supported by the 3D Vision technology, so you can play games on the laptop’s display in stereo 3D mode, but you can also connect the laptop trough the HDMI 1.4 video output to a 3D-capable HDTV and use the bigger screen in 3D as well. You also get to watch 2D videos and movies with a simulated 3D effect.
gadgetslab
You’ll also know this once you carry all 3.2 kilograms of it that’s it’s something you’d want resting snugly on your desk or any other designated work (or play) station. Its black glossy finish is also a bit of a smudge-magnet so it would be best if you kept it pristine in one place. But from just basically looking at it, you’re almost assured of ease of use as it has a full-on spacious keyboard and ample room for your wrists to rest as well as a large dotted trackpad. Just above the keyboard are three circular buttons: Assist, 3D, and Vaio. Assist takes you to VAIO Care, in case you have any problems with your computer. 3D allows you to switch to 3D display when watching HD
content. Vaio takes you to its control center from system information right down to the 3D Function where you can adjust the 3D settings.

REEBOK EASYTONE EXPRESS TRAINERS

WHAT’S HOT: • Lightweight • Fun to walk in • Ideal for walking and leisure time WHAT’S NOT: • Not very stylish BOTTOMLINE: The Reebok EasyTones can be a part of any woman’s wardrobe as these allow her to get that “little extra” exercise as she goes about her daily tasks. I know I really needed to start exercising. And what better way to set off my journey to physical wellness than a new pair of training shoes meant for walking. I know I don’t have the physical stamina to join the ranks of runners so I decided—early on—that walking will be my thing.
May2011
Reebok’s EasyTone Express makes exercising fun and less of a burden. Different from Reebok’s Runtones, there are moving airpods on the EasyTone Express trainers that target the butt, hamstrings and calves. The balance pod system was invented by a former NASA engineer Bill McInnis. These supposedly tone the muscles in the legs and bottom while the wearer walks. Designed specially for women, the EasyTones have a female-specific footbed.
28
Using the balance ball technology as inspiration, the trainers give the users that feeling of running on sand. This constriction supposedly helps tone and strengthens key leg muscles while walking or running. It www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
creates instability with each stride, making the abdominal, bottom and leg muscles work harder. Plus you will burn extra calories with every step you take. McInnis and his team at Reebok used electromyography to test the product. Sensory electrodes were attached to key muscles and these sensors measure the levels of muscle activation as a woman walks. By comparing the changes in muscle activation between different types of shoes, they determined which shoes are working the muscles hardest. In these tests, it was found that muscle activation increased when using EasyTone compared with other shoes. After the first wear, I did feel muscles
I had forgotten about. At the bottom of the shoe are six air balance pods that help create a “softer ride” for the user. The three pods are located on the back of the shoe near the heel to take in air, while the three pods in the front force it all out—his action increases the muscle activation in your gluts, quads, and calves. Actually, it felt like I was walking on air. At first, wearers may feel a bit unstable with every step they make but soon enough they will get the hang of it. It feels like I have two sponges under my soles—one at the toe, one at the heel. They’re actually so comfortable you can actually
stay on your feet longer than you’d expect. The slanted heel propels the foot forward for an improved walking stride. The EasyTones are actually three times softer than a traditional foam-based shoe and the extra cushioning from the molded shoe liner reduces the impact on the foot during exercises. I never liked that “wet socks” feeling that you get after a long walk. So it’s nice the EasyTones have open weave mesh uppers that allow support as well as breathability. A polyurethane removable insole makes washing easier.

It’s surprising to know that Instant Messaging and chatting has been available for more than 10 years now. Where before we talked to friends only physically, the explosive success of Facebook and Twitter has made almost everything we do online an event that, with our permission, is broadcast to our circle of friends.

BBC via the RSS portion of the app. The best thing is that it works in the background and sends a popup notification on screen every time there’s an update, so as long as my iPad is on, I now always know what’s new with my friends and what’s in the news.
Having said that, I must admit that I’m really not a Facebook addict. I do have an account which I check from time to time—not everyday—and I definitely do not post everything that I do on my wall although I like to see if there are new posts and updates.
I like Boxcar because it is free, and there’s a beta version for my Mac, so I can access it from both the iPad and my laptop. Setting up is a breeze. All I needed to do was to add the service of my choice and select which app should be opened when I access my Facebook and Twitter accounts. All I needed to do to add RSS updates from my favorite news networks was to input their website addresses. Setting up the email account was the only one that required additional steps. To access my Gmail account, boxcar created a unique forwarding address that I had to add to my Gmail account so that it would automatically forward my mail to my boxcar address.
Since I got my iPad, I’ve logged in to my social network accounts more often than I used to just because of the many great apps that I found fun and easy to use. Here are a few of them:
FRIENDLY Among all of the Facebook apps available for the iPad, and the ones I’ve tried, I liked Friendly best. It
might take a while to load but once it’s been set up, the streamlined interface is very easy to use. Friendly opens in the Live Feed page with tabs for Events and Places. There’s a navigation bar on top that allows access to Profile, Friends, Messages, Notifications, etc. The layout is very comfortable to use because it looks like Facebook. IM+ This is the chat app that I often use because it supports all of my online chat services. With this one free app, I can simultaneously log in to my Google Talk, Yahoo!, Facebook and Twitter Accounts. Setting up is easy —all I needed to do was add each service, enter my username and password, and my contacts appeared on the left side of the window. I like chatting on my iPad using IM+ because the chat window is big, and there’s a selection of different wallpapers to choose from to make the chat background more interesting. Even if this free app comes with ads, they’re not conspicuous so anyone can live with it, especially if the ad-free Pro version is priced at $9.99.
GETGLUE I like watching TV shows. I listen to a lot of Audiobooks and I have ebooks galore. But of course there are the movies; GetGlue allows me to “like” my favorites and based on the trend of my choices, GetGlue recommends similar shows or music. Every time I check in to a TV show or music, my Facebook friends get notified what I’m watching or listening to. Collecting stickers for achieving a certain level of competency in GetGlue is very inspiring, I end up trying my best to reach the targets. My dream now is to earn enough stickers so that I would receive actual stickers from GetGlue. GetGlue is a great software. It delivers a unique service not offered by other iPad and Facebook services. With an iPad-friendly graphical interface and the functionality of a web browser, the GetGlue experience is light-hearted and relaxing, and it’s really a great tool for people who want to explore and share interests outside of the usual relationship topics of social networking. Best of all, this app is totally free.

All-New Ford Ranger Unveiled
the hottest machines that take you places
By Armin A. Amio
Bigger. Wider. Higher. These three words best describe the all-new Ford Ranger, the fifth iteration of the internationally sold model although there were four previous ones sold in North America.
May2011
Unveiled in Bangkok, Thailand (a natural choice considering that it is the second-biggest truck market in the world), Ford executives debut the new Ranger to the regional press, one day before it makes its first public appearance at the Bangkok International Motorshow. Available in three cab styles— Regular, Super and Double—and up to five series (depending on market demand), the new pickup truck gets three new engines—two Duratorq TDCi diesels and one Duratec gasoline unit—as well as two drivetrains (4x2 and 4x4) and two ride heights with the 4x2 Hi-Rider sharing the same frame as the 4x4 model. This gives customers a much wider choice, not to mention price points. The 2.2-liter Ford Duratorq TDCi fourcylinder diesel engine has a rated peak torque output of 375 Nm and
30
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
power output of 110 kW (150 PS). The 3.2-liter TDCi five-cylinder diesel engine offers 470 Nm of torque and power rated at 147 kW (200 PS) while the 2.5-liter Ford Duratec four-cylinder gasoline engine allows 226 Nm of torque and power at 122 kW (166 PS). Ford says it can be after-market upfitted to run on LPG. Still true to its “Built Ford Tough” genes, towing capacity is up to 3350 kg on selected models with diesel engines. Certain variants also have an outstanding payload capacity of up to 1500 kg.
Peter Fleet, Ford president for Asean, said the new Ford Ranger is the first truck to be built under the One Ford strategy as part of the US automaker’s global product program. The pickup will be produced from a single global platform that replaces the two platforms currently in production regionally. It will be manufactured in Thailand, South Africa and Argentina. Design and development came from Australia, effectively bringing together the full engineering expertise of Ford around the world. Its designers took their inspiration from the Casio G-Shock watches so popular during the 1980s. At 5359 mm long and 1850 mm wide, the new pickup’s rugged looks are backed up by its beefy size. But thanks to a responsive steering system, turning requires no more than 3.5 turns of the wheel (lock to-lock), allowing the Ranger to
maneuver easily on the narrow streets of Asean and while parking.
Joe Hinrichs, group vice president and president for Asia Pacific and Africa, and concurrent chairman and CEO of Ford China, said the engineers have paid special attention to the rear seats in the truck, with the second row in the Super Cab more spacious than key competitors. The B-pillar has been moved forward allowing bigger legroom and knee clearance. The Regular Cab and the Super Cab have a bigger box volume at 1.82 cubic meters and 1.45 cubic meters, respectively, while the Double Cab has a space of 1.21 cubic meters. The Ranger Double Cab offers 23 storage spaces in the cabin. It also has a deep center console bin that can accommodate 8.5 liters. In some models, the duct from the air-conditioning unit can cool up to six cans of beverage. The glove box is large enough to accommodate a 16-inch laptop computer while door pockets can fit in 1.5-liter bottles. There is also ample storage for mobile phones and other small items in the console and in areas within easy reach of the driver. Underneath the rear seats, a hidden storage area for tools can easily be accessed. The new Ranger also comes with the newest technology available for vehicles these days—Bluetooth 1, USB and iPod connectivity as well as voice control over the radio, CD,
iPod, USB, electronic air-conditioning and mobile phone. Dual-zone climate control and cruise control are provided in the high series variants while selected models get a five-inch color screen with satellite navigation. Flood-prone Ranger buyers will be glad to know that the truck’s key electrical components and air inlets have been placed high in the engine compartment, enabling the pickup to go deeper than any others. The 4x4 and 4x2 Hi-Rider models can wade through up to 2.6 feet of water. Its ground clearance is about two-thirds of a foot as the driveline components have been mounted above the frame rail so that items like the transfer case and oil pan are protected by crossmembers. Ford says car-like passenger comfort is a key element in the design process, so the new Ranger gets a carefully tuned suspension. The rear suspension also provides Ranger with a firmly planted ride for high-speed driving on dirt roads with reduced sway and less vehicle ‘skate’ on corrugated or rough surfaces. Safety features include: Electronic Stability Program that applies brake inputs and engine torque reduction to control wheel slip as well as mitigates over- or under-steer reactions in slippery conditions or when the driver makes sudden lane changes to avoid an accident; a Trailer Sway Control system that monitors the behavior of the tow vehicle and trailer array to sense the advent of trailer sway and apply braking countermeasures to reduce its effects; Adaptive Load Control which provides additional stability assurance for drivers dealing with heavy payloads; as well as Roll-over Mitigation that closely monitors the Ranger’s speed, lateral acceleration and steering angle, and intervenes to restore stability if the vehicle is in danger of rolling over. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Emergency Brake Assist are designed to recognize when the driver is in a panic braking situation and increase

the force used to slow the vehicle. Craig Metros, chief designer of the all-new Ranger, mentioned the inclusion of a proprietary pedestrian protection system that includes a “hexageneous” under-bonnet structure to reduce the potential for pedestrian head injuries and a front bumper design that incorporates energy-absorbing materials. Before its unveiling, the new Ranger has gone through extreme testing. Tested in Australia, Dubai, Thailand, North America, South America, Sweden and South Africa, it had to face severe heat and cold, monsoon rains, high altitudes as well as rushing rivers, arid deserts and potholed roads. Prototypes clocked more than a million kilometers on the road, supported by countless hours of exhaustive testing in laboratories, Ford said. “The all-new Ranger is in a league of its own,” said Gary Boes, vehicle line director for Ford’s new compact truck platform. “It’s unique in that it delivers all that’s expected of a truck and more without forcing a tradeoff on the customer. At the end of the day, the customer not only gets class-leading towing, payload and water-wading capabilities but also superior fuel economy, cabin refinement and the latest technologies.”

SUZUKI SX4 CROSSOVER: The Smart & Practical Choice

To be a top-of-mind choice in the hatchback wars, one must be stylish and smart. Whether it’s in the showrooms (with exterior and cabin design) or on the road (with performance), the auto in question must meet the aesthetic and practical needs of would-be buyers. Such is the ability of the Suzuki SX4 Crossover.
If you’re wowed by the exterior, the interior will make jaws drop in a
good way as well. The gauge cluster offers everything the driver needs to know—including fuel range, trip distance, outside temperature and a digital clock—in easy-toread binnacles. The head unit has an auxiliary socket for access to external MP3 players, and totes eight speakers for clear yet forceful delivery of sound. The comfortable cloth seats can handle four or five, and the rear seats fold 60/40 to swallow bigger cargo. Plus, there are a number of storage bins all around the cabin to store stuff – especially
handy on long trips. Matching the wow factor of the cabin and body shape is the performance. 110 hp and 150 Nm of torque (from a 1.6L 16-valve DOHC naturally aspirated straight four ) reside under the driver’s right foot, all ready at his disposal thanks to variable valve timing (VVT) and a balanced four-speed gate-type automatic transmission. And discs on all four wheels plus dual airbags provide superior active and passive safety needs. Add to that the
comfort features of elevated back seats that give the rear passengers a better view of the road ahead, while the high ground clearance, ideal seat height and large door openings provide easy entry and exit into the vehicle. All these make the SX4 Crossover the perfect car for everyday driving. With slick performance matching a comfortable cabin and sleek body styling, the SX4 is definitely a stylish and practical choice in the hatchback market.
mobility
For starters, the Suzuki SX4 Crossover displays sporty tinges coming from renowned auto designer Giorgetto Giugiaro/Italdesign—such as unique honeycomb design, a large lower grille, built-in roof rails and black fender arch—that make the future owner want to display his car to all and sundry constantly. Also, the quarter panel glass near the A-pillars makes turning into 90-degree intersections a lot easy.

125 Years Of Bosch: Invented For Life
The Diesel Passenger Car Turns 75
In 1922, Robert Bosch, company founder of Bosch, issued the development contract for the diesel injection pump, initially for use in trucks. It looks like 20 years from now, diesel engines will still remain one of the most important power-train types in passenger cars. Now as one of the world's leading providers of diesel systems, Bosch has based its forecast on the diesel engines’ enormous development potential in which fuel consumption and emissions will be cut further in the future.
75 Years Of Diesel Innovations In Passenger Cars In the 1930s, Daimler-Benz planned to expand to passenger cars with diesel engines that had Bosch injection. The world's first seriesproduced diesel passenger car, a Mercedes-Benz 260 D, celebrated its premiere at the Berlin Automobile Exhibition in 1936. It used a third less fuel than a gasoline model for the same power output. By 1950, Bosch had manufactured 1 million diesel pumps for passenger cars and trucks.

As early as 1960, Bosch unveiled the first distributor pump, which was lighter and more compact

And yet they will offer dynamic, refined driving characteristics with an output of roughly 100 kilowatts.
than existing in-line pumps; thus paving the way for the use of diesel engines in smaller passenger cars. The phenomenal 1975 VW Golf became the first compact-class diesel model to have a high-speed diesel engine, which delivered high revs yet was economical.
Bosch launched the first electronic control systems for its distributor and inline pumps in 1986, while in the following year, Munich-based BMW became one of the first automakers to start using electronically controlled distributor pumps. “Sheer Driving Pleasure was now possible with the first turbo diesel engine made by BMW, which was available in the six-cylinder 524 td, the world's fastest series-production diesel-powered passenger car of its day. In 1989, the first axial piston pump for diesel direct injection revolutionized the diesel engine.
Common Rail: 21st-Century Injection Technology Of all the alternatives available in the late 1990s, common rail injection technology ultimately established itself as the leading solution. The 1997 Mercedes-Benz 220 CDI and the Alfa Romeo 156 JTD became the first cars to use the innovation. It provided constantly high injection pressures of up to 1,350 bar for all the cylinders served by the common rail. The common
rail system made multiple injections possible for the first time. In 2003, Bosch unveiled the third generation of common rail injection featuring piezo electric inline injectors. Compared with its predecessors, this system further reduced the diesel engine's fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, while also reducing the associated running noise.
The Future Is Diesel Bosch diesel technology will pave the way over the next few years for even more efficient passenger car drives based on the internalcombustion engine. Taken together, all the individual technical developments associated with the internal-combustion engine are giving rise to engine concepts that will be ready for the market in 2015. The diesel engines of the future will have just three cylinders and a displacement of some 1.1 liters, thanks to extreme downsizing.
They will be fitted with a slew of additional products, all of which will combine to increase the efficiency of the powertrain: a start-stop system to automatically switch the engine on and off when the vehicle comes to a stop, for instance at lights or in traffic jams; thermal management that gets the engine quickly up to the optimal operating temperature and keep it there; and a highly efficient alternator that utilizes brake energy as one source for charging the battery. Diesel passenger cars of the future will run even more efficiently with Bosch technology; so much so that a diesel-powered car in 2015 will consume just 3.6 liters to drive 100 kilometers. That is some 30-percent less fuel than a 2009 standard diesel model uses. In diesel hybrids, on the other hand, the fuel consumption of diesel engines will be reduced by as
much as some 40 percent. Bosch engineers are already working on systems for future engine concepts that are being devised by automakers and will therefore continue to promote the refinement of internal combustion engines.

Women like their cars cute, attractively priced and hot. No, not hot in the muscular looks. Rather, they would like a vehicle that’s nimble, easy to drive and tote lots of amenities yet still offer decent loading space for cargo and people.
These were the results from a recent survey conducted by respected automobile website TrueCar.com, where it was also discovered that women are directly responsible for 45 percent of new car purchases, and have input into 80 percent of new car purchases. Women look for autos that offer a safe, impressive interior at an affordable price—meaning, it's possible to get comfort amenities, a decent audio system, ABS and airbags without spending a bundle. And this is where Suzuki’s expertise in compact cars gives it the upper hand when it comes to capturing the female market. Its compact cars such

as the Celerio and SX4 Aero offer value-for-money features, offering a more comfortable ride plus providing amenities to keep passengers occupied for long stretches and with features to keep occupants protected in case of an accident. Females who look for an SUV or an MPV, want (according to the aforementioned TrueCar.com survey) a hauler that offers a comfortable ride, yet tote convenience features that affect seating for children and occupant safety. This is where the Jimny, APV and the SX4 Crossover come into the picture. All told, safety, comfort, practicality and value are top priorities for women car buyers. Styling, design and performance are also important, but not necessarily more so than practicality. In short, what women want in automobiles, women get in Suzuki cars.
Petron Enertripid Promotes Fuel Savings & Road Safety as we approach an intersection, particularly when trying to avoid getting caught at a stop light. More often than not, this effort is futile and just wastes gas. 2. Don’t go heavy on the pedal. To save gas, step lightly on the accelerator. A heavy foot on the pedal is not only a gas-guzzling practice, it can also produce an uncomfortable, jerky ride no thanks to the resulting short bursts of speed and constant braking. Save yourself and your passengers from a high-stress ride, keep your foot light on the pedal.
Petron EnerTripid educates motorists on how to optimize their resources and get the most value from their fuel expenses. To help us save on fuel consumption Petron EnerTripid recommends the following:
3. Life is not a race. To save on gas, maintain a steady pace. Even race car drivers know that a smooth drive is also a fast drive. Maintaining a constant speed at the recommended speed limit is often the quickest way to get to your destination. Enjoy the drive.
1. Beating the red light consumes more gas. We tend to accelerate
4. The longer you stay in low gear, the more gas you spend. Shift up to
save gas. Be a mindful driver and take note of your engine rpm. Shift up at the earliest possible time, not only to save gas but also to keep your engine running at the most efficient gear. 5. Maintain the recommended tire pressure. Studies have shown that under-inflated tires result in higher gas consumption. Make sure to have your tire pressure checked each time you gas up. 6. Plan ahead and combine several trips into one. Each time you start your car from a cold start consumes more fuel. Instead of running several short trips, try to schedule all your errands into one longer trip to save gas. 7. Giving your car a regular tune-up saves gas. Follow your vehicle’s recommended service maintenance schedule to keep it in tip-top shape. A well-tuned vehicle is more fuelefficient than a run-down one.

GRAN TURISMO 5
where playing around is considered a good thing
By John Nieves
DEVELOPER: Polyphony Digital PUBLISHER: Sony Computer Entertainment
Six years—it’s been six long, excruciating years since Polyphony Digital last unleashed PlayStation owners into the virtual streets of Gran Turismo 4. The wait is finally over, and Polyphony Digital has finally let loose the Gran Turismo 5 to petrol heads everywhere. Is it worth the wait? The answer is a resounding yes. Every aspect of the game shows off Polyphony Digital’s notorious attention to detail to absolutely everything—from the light refracting off the Audi R8’s headlights, to the sudden oversteer that catches you out when you accelerate too early off a turn. Add next-gen graphics into the mix, and you have one of the best driving sim games in the market. “The Real Driving Simulator” tag was never this true.
May2011
There are literally dozens and dozens of cars available for you to use, from the lowly Nissan Silvia to the raging Italian monster/car Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce. The cars drive like their real counterparts too: a vintage Dodge Challenger isn’t built for curves and it tells you that via the shaking camera and the audio cues as you try and get the heavy muscle car through a chicane.
40
Veterans of the series will recognize some of the elements of GT 5—from the license sections where the game teaches you the basics and the finer points of driving fast to the racing events. New to the series are the B-Spec events which allow you to play a coach of sorts. You’re tasked to coach a team of drivers and guide them through different events just like the A-Spec game mode. You’ll be able to give them commands throughout the race, but most of it lies in the skill of the AI player and the car you gave it to handle. This is where the game stumbles a bit—aside from giving them a few commands they’re largely on their own and the AI drivers have a knack www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
of screwing up even the most basic of turns. There are also special events which include go-kart racing (more challenging than it sounds), NASCAR races and everything in between. You’ll even be able to drive through Top Gear’s race track, that stretch of heaven where Stig takes demo cars out for a spin. Like most games, GT 5 has adopted a small exp/leveling system for players. Basically this limits the quality of the vehicles you can buy and the race events you can join. One main complaint I have is that a lot of the new stuff in GT 5 only appear when you’ve invested a bit of time into the game. Most AI opponents are pushovers when you start, but unexpectedly turn pro once your level hits the double digits. Ditto for the damage system. You’ll also be able to go online and compete with other players. There are the requisite social network integration and matchmaking options included to make playing online easier. As is with most PSN titles, the overall GUI experience could be better, but once you’re playing with 16 other people all of those issues disappear. While you can play the game with just a standard SIXAXIS controller, you’ll need to grab yourself a decent driving wheel to really experience the game like it was intended. If you own a PS3 and love cars, this game is a no-brainer purchase.
websites Specialty Social Networks By Presy Alba
Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org) defines social networks as “social structures made up of individuals (or organizations) called "nodes," which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.”
Social networks are nothing new. A century ago, many such networks were started and remain strong today—social and civic clubs like the Rotary, Lion’s, Kiwanis, Zonta, etc. are great examples of how structured networks can impact their communities with their shared vision and knowledge sharing. What’s different with the web-based social networks is that the site or network just provides the platform, and any one who joins can create his or her own circle—no membership qualification and no club oath required. The individual has control over which activity or interest group to join or unjoin. But one thing remains the same, the networks are still based on relationship and/or common interests.
There are more specialized social networks that limit the user’s circle or network by requiring them to define their familial relationship with other users. These are familybased social networks that connect members to stay in contact with one another. There are many familyoriented social networks but in addition to Facebook, my family likes and uses Geni (www.geni.com) to stay in touch.
Geni is a genealogy and social networking website that was launched in January 2007 with the objective of creating a family tree of the world. At Geni, family profiles are private—users can enter the names and the email addresses of their parents, siblings and other relatives. The Geni website allows users to graphically organize and complete their personal family tree. Geni then uses the email addresses provided by the users to invite family members to join, complete their own profiles and add their own connections, expanding the family tree and the network further. I like Geni because it allows my family to share important events even when we live in different parts of the world. It also allows us to share photos and videos of milestones—school events and competitions of the nephews and nieces, vacations trips, and other important happenings of each branch of the family. Geni also reminds us when birthdays and anniversaries are coming up and allows us to notify the family when a significant milestone is about to happen. Another type of specialized social networking is based on location. Yahoo! Koprol (www.koprol.com) is one such network. Designed for mobile devices, Koprol allows users to post their location and add short status updates, and then see how many other members are in the vicinity.
specific product or service. Adding information like address (complete with a map), phone numbers, email address and website (if available), and photo of the building exterior, makes it a lot easier to set up to meet people in a new place. Users can also share their opinion about a place by “liking” it and adding a short comment or review. Still another type of specialization is the entertainment-based social network. GetGlue (www.getglue. com) offers its members access to their website via any web browser from a desktop or a mobile device and also via device specific applications like GetGlue for iPad, iPhone and Android. If you love to watch TV shows and movies, read books and listen to music a lot—and you want to share your interests with your friends, Getglue is the perfect specialty social networking site for you.
I like Koprol because it keeps me connected to my friends, share my favorite places with them and also connects me to people who are in the same location. With Koprol, I don’t have to call or text my friends to tell them where I am. I only check in to a location, and if they are following me, they’ll know exactly where I am.
May2011
Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc. are great examples of social network sites that offer users a platform where they could define their own social circles by creating profiles, photo albums, messaging
and chatting with a network they build based on their own personal criteria—hey can friend or “unfriend” any person who has an account in the same site.

L.A. Noire (PS3, 360)
From Rockstar Games, the developer of the infamous Grand Theft Auto series, comes an open world game set in the late 1940s. For those that are expecting another Grand Theft Auto clone will be disappointed. As the name suggests, the game has a noire-feel as the main character rise through the ranks of the 1940’s Los Angeles Police. L.A. Noire will feature next generation facial capture technology called MotionScan. This is an important technology you, the player, will have to judge for yourself whether the person you are questioning is telling the truth from their facial expressions.
Shift 2: Unleashed (PC, 360, PS3)
The Need for Speed franchise has gone through numerous iterations throughout its lifetime since its debut in 1994. But in its heart, it has always been a more arcade-type racing game than a full on racing simulation. This has changed with the latest Need for Speed title, Shift 2: Unleashed. Although EA has dropped the Need for Speed name in the title, it is still pretty much a part of the franchise. This “forking of the game is geared toward racing simulation fans that like to tweak the cars for better handling than better looking. Shift 2: Unleashed features more than 140 licensed vehicles that are available for racing and tuning. The game will exclusively feature the just announced Huayra, the successor to the Zonda from auto-maker Pagani. There are also 40 real-world locations including Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and Suzuka in Japan.
Super Street Fighter 3D Edition (3DS)
The 3DS is the latest portable gaming hardware from Nintendo. Similar to its predecessor the DS, the most prominent feature is the ability to show full 3D without the need of special 3D glasses. One of the launch titles for the device is Super Street Fighter 3D Edition. Just because the game is in a portable system, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition does not skimp on any of the features from its console counterpart. You still get all your favorite characters as well as fully rendered 3D characters running at 60 frames per second in 2D mode and 30 frames per second in 3D mode.

The sequel to Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II expands the franchise from the land of Ferelden to the neighboring state of Kirkwall. For those that have finished the first Dragon Age, you will be able to carry over your character. On the other hand, your choices in the first game can be carried over to Dragon Age II where these choices will have an impact in some of the dialogue. Speaking of dialogue, the main character, Hawk, will now be able to converse with other characters as opposed to the first game. The game is told in a framed narrative. This means that the story being presented has already happened where the narrating character, Varric, tells the story of your rise as the Champion of Kirkwall. While still keeping the tactical and strategic aspects of the first game, Dragon Age II will have faster action as well as more streamlined RPG-elements. www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Duke Nukem Forever (PC, 360, PS3)
(PC, PS3)
It is the title that would not die. Announced in 1997, Duke Nukem Forever was repeatedly delayed until the developer, 3D Realms, in 2001, said it would be released when it’s done. Since then, the game has been synonymous with vaporware. In 2010, it looked like the final nail on the coffin was place when 3D Realms announced that it has stopped development of Duke Nukem Forever. However, later that year, 2K Games announced that Gearbox would be taking the helm of the games development and that it would finally be released in 2011, after 13 years of development.

Portal 2 (PC, 360, PS3, OS X)
Portal 2 is the much anticipated sequel to the surprise first person puzzler, Portal. The player returns to the destroyed Aperture Science Lab and again wields the portal gun (officially known as the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device) that creates portals connecting two surfaces across space. Just like the first game, you will have to maneuver and solve numerous platforming and physics-based puzzles while trying to escape the game’s antagonist, the psychotic AI, GLaDOS. Whereas the first game was only a single player experience, Portal 2 allows multiplayer in the form of twoplayer co-op. In two player co-op, you and a friend control two robots must navigate the Aperture Science Lab in a separate story from the single player campaign.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, 360, PS3)
Crysis 2 (PC, 360, PS3)
The first Crysis was infamous as the game that brought any gaming rig to its knees. At the time of its release there was no hardware that was powerful enough to be playable with all graphical settings at maximum. On the other hand, the rewards, in terms of graphics were stunning. Crysis 2 brings you to the city of New York which has been invaded by aliens. You take control of a Force Recon Marine who is given the Nanosuit 2.0, an upgrade to the first Nanosuit of the first game which gives you speed, strength, and stealth for brief periods.
feature
Developed by the Bethesda Game Studios, it is the fifth in the Elder Scrolls series which began in 1994. It is an open world, action role-playing game. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim retains the traditional open world gameplay from previous Elder Scroll games. Although not a direct sequel to the last Elder Scrolls (Oblivion), Skyrim is set 200 after the last game in the land of Skyrim. You are a Dovahkiin (Dragonborn) and must defend the land of Skyrim against the massive dragon, Alduin.
featur Mortal Kombat (360, PS3)
Mortal Kombat is the ninth installment of the franchise. In a way, this latest iteration is a return to the first three Mortal Kombat games both in gameplay as well as story-wise. The developer has tweaked the game to have deeper gameplay for more dedicated players. The game will feature 3D characters and backgrounds but will retain its 2D fighting gameplay.
Gears of War 3 (360)
Gears of War 3 is a third-person shooter. It is the third and final chapter of the series starring Marcus Fenix and his squad. It will feature all the loose ends from the first two games. Gears of War 3 also has new characters, including a number of female characters which are all playable. New moves in the game include the ability to swap weapons with squadmates as well as knock over enemies while going over cover. There will also be a fully controllable mech suit that will be available in certain parts of the game. And multiplayer will have a new mode called Beast mode where you try to survive wave after wave of COG members.
Mass Effect 3 (PC, 360, PS3)
Mass Effect 3 is a third-person RPG shooter and is third and final chapter of the trilogy. It will finally close the chapter of Commander Shepard as he saves the Earth and the whole galaxy from the ancient Reapers, whose purpose is the eradication of all life. From the debut trailer, it looks like Shepard will be able to go to Earth which wasn’t possible in the previous games. Decision that the player has made in the first two games will affect the game and can change the story. Speaking of the story, characters from the past games will make appearances in Mass Effect 3.
Alice: Madness Returns

(PC, 360, PS3, OS X)

From American McGee, Alice: Madness Returns is the sequel to the American McGee’s Alice which was released in 2000. It is a dark retelling of the Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Madness Returns is set 11 years after the first game (which incidentally is the same time difference between the release dates of the actual games). She has been released from the asylum of the first game and in the care of a London psychiatrist. Unfortunately, her hallucinations have increased and she must once again return to Wonderland to save its denizens and eventually her sanity.

Dirt 3 (PC, 360, PS3)
May2011
The spiritual successor to the Colin McRae Rally series, the Dirt franchise has expanded to more than just rally racing. Across the series, mode such as Rallycross, Raid, and Landrush were added and with the latest in the series now adds Gymkhana. Gymkhana is time-based where one needs to memorize the course and perform different driving techniques. Aside from the plethora of current and classic rally cars, Dirt 3 will also feature American Driver, Ken Block’s, DC Shoes Ford Fiesta, which he is currently driving at the 2011 World Rally Championship.
Minecraft (Java platforms, iOS, Android)
Unlike most of the games in this list, Minecraft is already playable even before it’s released near the end of the year. Minecraft is a sandbox building game. Although still in development, people were willing to play just to be able to play Minecraft so much so that Notch has received literally hundreds of thousands of dollars. And since the time of this writing, the game currently has 989 players online in 830 servers and over one million players have bought the game. Not bad for a game that is currently in beta.
Batman: Arkham City (PC, 360, PS3)
The sequel to arguably the best superherobased videogame in the last decade, Batman: Arkham City is still a stealth action-adventure game. This time, the game will be expanded to a whole city, as the name suggests. The game follows about a year after Arkham Asylum. A number of villains such as the Joker, Harley Quinn and the Riddler will return. It was also announced that other Batman characters will appear in the game such as Catwoman, Hugo Strange, Mr. Freeze, and Talia al Ghul.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, 360, PS3)
feature
Those that fondly remember the first two Deus Ex games will be excited that Deus Ex: Human Revolution will be coming out this year. Human Revolution will continue the first-person roleplaying game of its predecessors while it itself will be a prequel to the first two Deus Ex games. The game still has that cyberpunk theme reminiscent of Blade Runner. Just like the game’s precursors, you will be able to take multiple paths to achieve an objective.

The Last Guardian (PS3)
There is a lot riding on The Last Guardian. First, the developer has developed excellent games such as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, both released on the Playstation 2. Second, trailers of The Last Guardian indicate a strong narrative involving a small boy and his giant four-legged creature with wings. Aside from that, there really isn’t any other information about the game except that it will come out by the end of the year.
Brink
(PC, 360, PS3)
Brink is a team-based, multi-player, first-person shooter. Unlike other first-person shooters, Brink will integrate parkour-style abilities within the game. The game will allow for 16 players to play online with eight players per team. Players will choose between two factions, the Resistance and Security. Each faction has their own back story which leads them to fight each other for control the floating city known as the Ark. Players will also be able to customize their characters depending on the players’ play-style and upgrade their character and items through experience points gained by completing objectives.
Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)
Star Wars: The Old Republic is slated to be the World of Warcraft-killer due to its strong brand franchise as well as the developers behind the game. Bioware has not only worked on another Star Wars game, Knights of the Old Republic, but is also developing two other games on this list, namely Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect 3. Aside from the Jedi and Sith classes, players can also choose to be a smuggler or even a Republic Trooper. It was also announced that the game will feature voice-acting for NPCs as well as space combat with the player’s own ships. On the other, the company might have bitten more than it can chew. This is the first time that Bioware will embark on the MMORPG space. It is also developing the concurrently with DA2 and ME3 which can be said that they are spreading themselves too thin and thus release a subpar game. We can only hope that Bioware will retain its level of quality as seen from its previous games.
Battlefield 3 (PC, 360, PS3)
May2011
The true successor of the Battlefield 2, Battlefield 3 will revolve around a new conflict in the not too distant future in the Iraq/ Iran border. The game will feature combined arms battles that has made the series popular. It will also feature 64-player battles for the PC which the consoles will have a maximum of 24-players. The developer, DICE, will also use its latest game engine, Frostbite 2, which will feature even more advanced destruction, sound, and graphics compared to the previous Battlefield games.

Twisted Metal (PS3)
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier
The name Tom Clancy should familiar to those who enjoy reading non-fiction, political thrillers. Since Rainbow Six, Tom Clancy has placed his name on other franchises such as Splinter Cell, Endwar and Ghost Recon. The Ghost Recon franchise lets the player control a four-man squad of Special Forces soldiers, known as Ghosts, though different missions, with each soldier having special skills and weapons.
May2011
The previous years have seen a number of reboots of older games. Another title that is getting the same treatment is Twisted Metal for the PlayStation 3. Originally launched in 1995 for the original PlayStation, Twisted Metal is a vehicular combat game where players choose between 12 different vehicles with their own drivers, abilities and weapons. The new game features the same vehicular combat as its predecessors. It will focus heavily on multiplayer combat with fourplayer split-screen offline and up to 16 players online as well as numerous multiplayer game modes.
Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (PSP)
When not making new sequels to either the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games, Square Enix is rereleasing updated version of their prize JRPGs. Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection was announced for the PSP in December last year. It is currently the definitive version of Final Fantasy IV. There is also a new story called Interlude that will bridge the gap between both games.
(PC, OS X)
The last game on the list is a bit of gamble as Blizzard, the developer of the Diablo franchise has only said that the game will come out “when it’s done”. Although there are strong indications that Diablo III will arrive within the year, most likely during the tail end of 2011. Gameplay is largely similar to its predecessors which is an action role-playing game. Diablo III is set 20 years after the last game. Five classes have been announced which are the Witch Doctor, Barbarian, Wizard, Monk, and Demon Hunter.

Alodia Gosiengfiao By Michelle Callanta-Toledo
EVERY GAMER’S FANTASY BECOMES A REALITY AS FAMOUS COSPLAYER ALODIA GOSIENGFIAO BREATHES LIFE INTO YOUR FAVORITE GAME CHARACTERS WITH HER ELABORATE, EXTRAVAGANT, AND EXACT COSTUMES. EVEN THOUGH IT DOES HELP THAT SHE IS ALREADY PRETTY TO BOOT AND COULD PROBABLY GIVE THE ACTUAL CHARACTERS SHE PORTRAYS A RUN FOR THEIR MONEY, WE AT GADGETS MAINTAIN THAT SHE IS PRETTIEST WHEN SHE’S HER HAPPY AND BUBBLY SELF. What was your first costume? Do you have any memories of that very first costume? Did you purchase it or maKe it yourself? My first costume was from the online game called Ragnarok. I dressed up as a Priestess. Well, firsts are always memorable. Even if we did not win that time, it marked the start of an incredible journey! We had our first costume commissioned. (Thank you, Mang Poly!) He was our first cosplay tailor and we were his first cosplay clients.
What would be your “dream” costume?
The Baroness (from G.I Joe), Super Mario (girl), WitchBlade Amaha Masane, and school girls.
As Gadgets Magazine is into the tech-lifestyle trend, what are your favorite gadgets and why? I love my Canon 450D with 100mm macro lens, iPhone 4, Cintiq & Intuos tablets, Sony Handycam XR350, iMac & MacBook Pros, Bose QC3 headphones and earphones, and of course, my Sony PS3.
Do you have any gadgets that are on your wish list? I’d love to upgrade my DSLR because it is bit outdated and I’d like to capture videos using various depths of field. Then a couple more lenses like a 180mm macro lens and the fish-eye lens. I’m also looking into getting some Bose speakers for my iPhone and PS3.
Do you think social networking sites have helped you as a cosplayer? What makes cosplay such a worthwhile endeavor? I feel that it has helped me so much because it has enabled me to share my works to the world. It has also helped me learn from other people who are experts in their own fields. When I surf, I see so many inspiring works and it has somehow pushed me to do different things.
As a very popular cosplayer, you probably have dozens of costumes. How exactly does it feel when you’re wearing a costume? Do you actually embody that character?
Cosplay for me is a worthwhile endeavor because it truly makes me happy. Why? As an artist, this particular hobby exercises different crafts. Sewing, crafting, sculpting, make-up, hair-styling. Then this leads you to meet other artists from different fields such as photography, set design. It is such an amazing hobby! I LOVE cosplay!
It feels amazing because you can be whoever you’d like to be. There are many different personas and I like trying various ones. I find it fun portraying different auras from jolly to Goth, from cute to evil/sexy. As much as my inner and true persona comes out most of the time (which is happy and bubbly), I still try to exude the traits original to the character I’m doing during performances and shoots..

But what exactly is an Eye-Ball Party and where did the term originate from?
The Eye of the Beyond The Party:Get-Together
By Benjamin Arnold Photos By Jonver David
May2011
I remember back in high school, when I was a total nerd and lacked a proper social life, I would get online and chat with people from around the world. I was in this “Online Clan” that was named Bio-Men and my screen name was Black Eight—corny I know, but I enjoyed that when I was a kid. They would occasionally hold what they would call Grand Eye-Ball Parties for clan members, though I never actually attended one. But what exactly is an Eye-Ball Party and where did the term originate from? An Eye-Ball Party also known as an EB Party is an internet term used in describing the get together of online friends. The idea behind an EB is to enhance social relationships beyond a computer screen. The actual phrase “Eyeball” originated in the
70
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
1970’s when Citizens Band radio (CB Radio) was introduced in the United Kingdom. It was slang for meeting someone off air and was widely used by teenagers to develop their social life. With the advancement of technology today, the CB Radio has been replaced by mobile text messaging or the internet, but the EB Parties still take place to this day. In today’s modern age, EB Parties are now being utilized by companies or organizations as an effective marketing tool to promote products, brand or even philanthropic campaigns. Ramon Macutay, Marketing Director for Level Up! Games and popularly known as GM Tristan of Philippine Ragnarok or PRO—one of Level Up! Games’ large online gaming communities, said; “If you’re in an industry or sector where managing your community is important, organizing EBs are invaluable. First, you get to touch base with your community and customers, they get to tell you (firsthand) their issues with your product and service and you (as the marketer or service provider) can answer their questions in real time. It is a very important part of community management. There are a lot of pundits who all agree that a brand, product or company will
generate “cults” or die-hard fans. Even social media and the Internet are seeing this trend. The companies that learn to harness the power of these “cults” (and one of them is managing EBs) will prevail versus those that do not.”
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
May2011
With that in mind, EB parties are more than just a simple “get together” of people to further develop social interactions, but more of a tool used to unite them—to solidify a single thought or promote a higher cause. One great example of this is the Twestival (Twitter Festival), which is an event that utilizes social media—more specifically Twitter—to connect communities offline, in a Grand EB sort of way, to promote a world changing cause while having fun as a group.
71
The recent Twestival Manila was put together by local organizers to raise at least Php 140,000 for JeepneED, which is a non-profit organization that directs funds to transforming jeepneys into mobile science and technology labs—to help in the education of rural schools in the Philippines. Rosario Juan, one of the organizers details, “We’ve had first-hand experience in how social media has helped us in periods of great distress, such as Ondoy. We now know that social media can be an invaluable tool in raising awareness about certain causes and, subsequently, mobilizing people to help.”
“We’ve had first-hand experience in how social media has helped us in periods of great distress, such as Ondoy. We now know that social media can be an invaluable tool in raising awareness about certain causes and, subsequently, mobilizing people to help.”
Macutay also states that, “The Internet is a great tool to communicate. But it fails in comparison to real contact. Socializing is best done via EBs, events and the like. It allows for a deeper sharing of knowledge and information. Something that supplements the information that you do via Forums or social media. Besides, meeting real friends in real events is always better than having thousands of ‘virtual’ friends in Facebook and yet, you have no real social life.” So in addition to being a way of enhancing social relationships, EB Parties can turn simple online “shout-outs” or “status messages” into a reality— whether it be to develop a brand, sell a product or even raise funds for a good cause.
For further info regarding online life, social networking or to support Twestival Manila and JeepneED, visit www.gmtristan.com, www. geekzkrieg.com, manila.twestival.com and www.jeepneed.org
• Always attend “official” EBs. If in doubt, call or contact the company to first check if the event is legit • Look for the “fine print”. Does the EB need a purchase? Does it have dubious mechanics for its games or contests? If it’s too good to be true, contact an official from the company and verify. • Verify the friends that you meet. If they claim that they are so-and-so, do ask some questions that you know he or she only knows. That way, you can be sure that the person isn’t an impostor • Don’t bring your valuables like iPads, gadgets or lots of cash to EBs.

beautylab Slender Down With Slendertone By Benjamin Arnold and Michelle Callanta-Toledo
Slendertone is a US Food and Drug Associationapproved, easy-to-use abs belt that uses Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) to deliver abdominal workout to firm up the core muscles and flatten the tummy area. Recommended to be used once a day for 20-minutes, Slendertone equates to doing 120 sit-ups. And with seven programs and 99 different intensity levels to choose from, you can tailor-fit your workout and train your muscles at a comfortable pace. The beauty about Slendertone is that it targets not only the muscles you see, but also the ones difficult to reach using conventional exercise. This is because its patented EMS technology mimics the body’s natural muscle movements. Signals are sent between three medical grade gel pads, reaching nerves that branch out to all three main abdominal muscles—the rectus, oblique and transversus abdominus—causing deep, strengthening contractions and effectively working the entire core. As the signal strength increases, the nerves in turn cause your muscles to contract and relax naturally, delivering a complete workout to the ab muscles. This same EMS technology is prescribed in hospitals and clinics worldwide to strengthen and rehabilitate muscles.
May2011
Michelle says:
76
At the launch of Slendertone, I immediately asked its distributor, the Primer Group of Companies, to send two units to our office that same week. After all the other ab belts I’d seen on the Home Shopping Network, I was delighted to finally get my chance to see how these belts worked and if they really did work. But of course, my excitement did not make me delusional and I knew that maximum results would only be achieved if I accompanied this fascinating little wonder-belt with some exercise and a balanced diet. So on top of the Slendertone, my colleague Ben and I decided to also do the cereal diet where we replace dinner with cereal while throwing in a bit of exercise (yes, I consider 20-minute walks exercise). www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph

Now the Slendertone already comes with those three gel pads, 3 triple-A batteries, and the instruction manual which makes preparation quick and easy. The gel pads are soft and sticky but don’t leave any trace on your skin after your use. You wrap it tight around your abdomen, press start and it will indicate the number of minutes you want it on you—20, 25 or 30 minutes. Then you can increase the amount of EMS (from 1 to 99) for both right and left pads accordingly by pressing the right and left buttons which will also appear on the monitor of the belt.

I began with 40 and every day I increased the setting until I reached 55 in about 4 weeks. A setting higher than you can take will result in this uncomfortable stinging pain. I could even feel my thighs begin to twitch and I’d kind of lean towards one side, almost in a cringe. But it wasn’t exactly painful and you can feel your abs tightening. With regular use, you will start to feel them getting firmer. The pads evenly distribute the electrical impulses so all your abs get a workout. But after only a month, the gel pads began to lose their stickiness and form and the more I used it, the more painful the impulses became. A sticky residue began to leave on my skin as the pads deteriorated. Now replacement pads are sold for about Php 890. I guess if you want to invest in this machine, you have to make it a point to lead a well-balanced lifestyle. On its own, Slendertone won’t give you the results you want unless you—as Slendertone’s Asia Pacific business development manager Sue Lewis said: “eat less [and] move more.”
Benjamin says: Losing weight has always been a perpetual task for me. I am not really that fat, but I am not exactly fit either. Being the kind of guy that enjoys sports that are not easily accessible like surfing or wall climbing, I have had to rely on crash diets to lose weight—but that only lasts me a few weeks. Eventually I get hungry and eat, instantly regaining whatever amount of weight I lost. With the Slendertone, the claim on the box is that I could get an equivalent of 120 sit-ups in a matter of 20 minutes. Out of the box, the Slendertone comes with five pieces: the main band that wraps around the waist; three separate gel pads, one of which is the main middle pad and the two are placed on the left and right sides of the waist band; and then the EMS power source and control panel. After putting the device together—which is very simple because of the easy-to-follow markings—I tried out the Slendertone by placing it on my abdominal section and setting it on program 3 at 50/50 power level. My initial reaction to the sudden flow of electricity through my abdomen was to cringe forward—as I wasn’t used to the feeling. I could feel my muscles involuntary contracting and my body would try and counter. But half way through the session, my stomach became accustomed to the muscle stimulation and the uncontrollable urge to wince slowly subsided to be nothing more than a tickle.
Though I didn’t lose a dramatic amount of weight, I did notice that my stomach area has tightened. This became evident to me when I bumped into a friend and she said, “Oh my God! What happened to your stomach? Where did it go?” In addition, when my trainer would have me do exercises related to the abdominal muscles, I found I was more capable of completing sets—so in a way, it conditioned my abdominal strength and endurance.
beautylab
After the 30-minute program, I took off the belt to find my skin red from where the gel pads were. But according to the manual this is normal as the blood flow in those areas were stimulated. I continued this once a day for approximately one month, increasing the level from 50/50 to around 70/75. Of course I didn’t expect dramatic results from just sitting in my chair with the Slendertone on—I helped it along by going to the gym and adjusting my diet with the support of Michelle.

hit the right notes with the latest sound tech
SoundCloud: The next place for music By Steven Vea
Any musician face the reality that his music must exist somewhere on the web. There have been various sites that have tried to cater to these needs, but there are only a few that have stood out in the recent past. One of the relatively recent pioneers that propelled personal music sharing was MySpace, which enjoyed a great number of unsigned musicians flock to their site. While it initially centered on networking by providing “a place for friends,” it eventually evolved into a “space for music,” endowing its many users with artist pages to promote and publicize their songs. One great attraction of MySpace was the ability for people to extravagantly “pimp” their artist page, using preset templates or by dabbling in technical source code. Furthermore, another great enticement was the built-in streaming audio player, which eliminated the need to provide a link to an external site where the songs were hosted, thus allowing visitors to preview music before downloading it. However, as time waned on, the site’s popularity dwindled as spam started to surge through its traffic, infecting users’ comments sections and flooding their inboxes with unwanted and irrelevant messages from strangers. MySpace also began to garner an unspoken reputation as a place to “meet” people in a rather provocative manner, as the site slowly featured several NSFW profile pages.

So where did people migrate to in order to share their music amidst the Facebook and YouTube revolutions? When it comes to sharing your personal music online, SoundCloud is quite possibly the best option on the web. It has been around since 2007, silently building what can be considered a purely musical following, in the sense that most of its registered users are musician and pure music enthusiasts. After all, their catch phrase is: “Your Sound, at the Heart.”
78
While its slogan might not be the most linguistically pleasing, SoundCloud does live up its intentions. Firstly, and most importantly, the site excels because it provides users a multitude of options to share their music through other popular networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), negating the need to visit the actual artist page. Sharing
www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
is done through their trademark streaming audio player, which consists of a visual representation of the music in a waveform, rallying behind the phrase “visualizing your music.” The player is not only aesthetically pleasing, but can be embedded and customized as well. Furthermore, SoundCloud also provides user widgets and badges, catering to bloggers and social networking addicts. Another unique feature is that people can comment and give feedback on a precise point in time in any uploaded song via timeline, which is useful if users want to comment on an exact transition or harmonic part. This also extremely useful for DJ mixes (to which the site has gained most of their following), because people can inquire about song titles and the like without having to painstakingly elucidate the actual time. SoundCloud is effective because it acts more like a hosting platform than a hub for networking, which keeps the site clean-cut and spam free. Since the site is purely musical based, there are no “unwanted tourists,” and one can be guaranteed that every comment they receive on their uploaded music is constructive. Furthermore, the site has connected with Creative Commons, providing its users with a multitude of sounds to creatively remix and reuse. Signing up to the site free and grants its users two hours of free uploads, which could be equated to approximately two full length albums or a recording of a live DJ set. If that weren’t enough, SoundCloud has recently joined the apps game, allowing its users to record their sounds on the go and instantly share them online. A multitude of third party apps have been developed that are compatible with the site as well. SoundCloud is perhaps the new breeding ground for undiscovered tunes and the perfect place on the web to witness the evolution of music to undiscovered proportions. Its distinct music player and various sharing options truly make the site stand out among its competitors.

HUMANFOLK HUMANFOLK is a world music project between Johnny Alegre (guitar, bamboo percussion, voice), Susie Ibarra (kulintang, drums, percussion, voices) and her husband, Roberto Juan Rodriguez (drums, percussion), together with renowned Philippine musical artists Cynthia Alexander (guitar, vocals, bass, bamboo percussion, gongs), and Malek Lopez (keyboards, synthesizer and sound design). In June of 2008, they recorded a musical suite by Alegre, entitled “Humanfolk”, which consequently became the name of the concept band.
Humanfolk’s music combines indigenous Philippine elements of bamboo and gong instruments, with folk-jazz, Brazilian, Cuban, Indian and Iberian strains, with overlays of electronica and urban Southeast Asian sounds. The amalgam becomes a rich electro-acoustic environment, replete with modal improvisation, wordless songs, rambling melodies and exotic harmonic progressions. Their seminal recording, catalyzed by the Phil-American percussion avant-gardist and indigenous music advocate, Susie Ibarra, with the Cuban-born drummer Roberto Juan Rodriguez (whose musical chops were honed in the orchestra of the great bassist-composer, Israel “Cachao” Lopez),
Johnny Alegre is a recording artist whose pioneering albums and performances have received favorable notices from the jazz press in London and Los Angeles, as well as his native Philippines. Cynthia Alexander’s award-winning albums and endearing repertoire have captured the imagination of a formidable following in the contemporary Philippine indie music scene. Her exquisitely-crafted music, compelling melodies and prose-poetry are distinctly Asian yet warmly assimilative of popular western influences with touches of classical. Malek Lopez is the keyboardist and electronic musician behind groups such as Drip and Rubber Inc. His collaborations with kindred artists such as Chris Brown and the Teichman Brothers have brought Manila’s underground electronica culture to venues of convergence in Berlin and Kuala Lumpur. Susie Ibarra’s name is legend in the rarefied ethno-musical and avant-garde jazz genres in the global landscape, with a cachet of recordings and formidable collaborations with Derek Bailey, John Zorn, Mark Dresser, David S. Ware and so forth. She was voted “Rising Star” in the 57th Annual Critics Poll (2009) of DownBeat Magazine in the Percussion category. Roberto Juan Rodriguez, from his heady days with Cachao and the Miami Sound Machine, is breaking ground afresh with his and Susie’s fusion of electronica, ethnic music and jazz in Electric Kulintang, and with his own AfroCuban ensemble, Septeto Rodriguez. The brave Philippine endeavor, HUMANFOLK, could very well be one of Asia’s more compelling musical associations in recent years.
featuredartist
In “The Epiphany of HUMANFOLK,” Alegre shares, “Just a few days before Susie’s and Roberto’s return to New York in late-June of 2008, the five of us converged in Shinji Tanaka’s studio to interpret, improvise on, and record a suite of compositions, collectively entitled “Humanfolk”. Shinji’s sizeable Sound Creation facility suddenly appeared cramped, as his studio floor was littered with our instruments of all manner. Drums, cymbals, brass and wooden kulintang, bamboo buzzers and rain sticks, acoustic and electric guitars, the grand piano fixture, tambourine, and assorted world percussion such as shakers, clappers, guiro and kalimba. It was possible for anyone among the five of us to pick up any instrument and play it credibly. And so Humanfolk happened, indeed, on a very special day that collected the stuff of dreams.”
have brought these adventurous musicians together into the same room: guitarist-composer Johnny Alegre; singer-composer and multi-instrumentalist Cynthia Alexander; and the electronica exponent and sound designer, Malek Lopez. In the succeeding months, they also recruited the keyboardist-vocalist and Chapman Stick player of Fuseboxx, Abby Clutario to supplement the vacuum created by the US-bound departure of Ibarra and Rodriguez. .

QUINCY JONES

Q: Soul Bossa Nostra MCA Music Inc. By Paolo Toledo
To music fans, the name Quincy Jones will all at once conjure up thoughts of a legend. One of the most acclaimed producers and composers of all time, “Q” has www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
Fast forward to 2011 and to Q’s latest studio album, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra. This is his first release since the criticallyacclaimed Q’s Jook Joint in 1995. Much like its predecessor, this album gathers songs from Jones’ rich production arsenal and features a powerful lineup of today’s artists who reinterpret a chosen track in their own flavor. Bear in mind that this comes off as more of a tribute from the artists, rather than Q’s work
The Reason. New song additions include What I Meant to Say as well as Is This The Day from which the album got its title. The beauty of this acoustic album lies in how the songs were translated into their acoustic counterparts. Drums and cymbals were replaced with a cajón or a percussion box on some songs while the sounds of the classic acoustic strings give a softer, smoother and soothing feel to the songs. The only song on the album that doesn’t seem to fit into the acoustic theme is What I Meant To Say with its piano and drum inserts. But though it doesn’t fit in with the acoustic feel of the album, on its own, its sound is superb.
Is This The Day, the lead single of the album also has its great points. The lyrics, along with the simple blend of stings and percussions, set a perfect mood changing blend of music that makes this album a must have for any Hoobastank fan or acoustic fan alike.
himself. That being said, listening to the reworked songs on the album may be one big “hit-ormiss” experience. The original versions of Q are solid. Even when reinterpreted, most of them still carry the same charm, and add a nice touch on top. Songs such as “Get The Funk Out Of My Face” (Snoop Dogg), “Ironside” (Talib Kweli), “Betcha Wouldn’t Hurt Me” (Mary J Blige, Q-Tip, Alfredo Rodriguez), and the first single, “Soul Bossa Nostra” (Ludacris, Naturally 7, Rudy Currence), all wonderfully bring out a fresh twist to the sound without losing its original luster. However, some covers are atrocious and sadly out of place. Akon fell disjointed on 1972’s “Strawberry Letter 23”, while the Michael Jackson classic, “P.Y.T” was destroyed by the electronic woo-ing of T-Pain, sadly dragging down Robin Thicke along with him. But all in all, Quincy Jones is still Quincy Jones, and with a talentpacked album redoing his classic, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra will still be something you can’t go wrong with.
FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE Between Two Lungs MCA Music Inc. By Paolo Toledo
In the magical land known as the UK, the flight of spell-casting sirens and fairies has never tapered. From Lily, to Amy, and Kate, a crop of femmes has penetrated various scenes with enchanting voices, and powerful songwriting. Now we witness the emergence another mythical entity: the dark pixie, otherwise known as Florence And The Machine. Listening to Florence Welch is nothing less than spellbinding. She works her way into your ears with a dance of dark words and beautifully painful melodies. Think Bjork over strings, harps, and an arrangement that sounds dirty indierock and angelic soul at the same time. This bipolar characteristic is evident as Flo’s wailing baritone haunts every song in Florence And The Machine’s debut, Lungs, and its re-release, Between Two Lungs. The follow-up is basically a 2-disc pack comprised of the original album, plus a CD of remixes, live sets, and a couple of new tracks. To say that Lungs is a good album is an understatement. Listeners will find themselves lost and bewildered in an emotional and musical jungle from the Massive Attack-approach and swirling harps of “Dog Days Are Over”, the Jack White rawness of “Kiss With A Fist”, and down to the sinister blues of “Girl With One Eye” where she rasps, “My reputation’s kinda clouded with dirt / That’s why you sleep with one eye open / That’s the price you paid.” The second disc, aside from the remixes, is highlighted by the live collaboration between Florence and Dizzee Rascal (“You’ve Got The Dirtee Love”) where an interesting mix of urban Brit is thrown into the pot of harps and howls. Overall, Florence’s performance almost becomes ethereal, while the lyrics scream of a bleeding heart – one that is set to sprinkle the pop skies with poisoned pixie dust.

It’s all about directions
81
By Princesse Lim-Fernandez
Contrary to popular belief, feng shui is not about signs or year of birth, but the study of the environment/surroundings and the art of placement. Signs are one’s personal luck and if there are things bound your way, we cannot change them for they are determined according to date of birth. But don’t fret, we’ll make luck come your way and reduce bad luck with proper feng shui. Every year flying stars change their order which then determines which directions are lucky and unlucky. The resulting feng shui chart shows all the directions and the stars situated on each. Every direction also has its cure and luck items, to enhance good luck or ease any bad luck. For the Year of the Metal Rabbit this year, three bad stars are positioned into one location—east. This is the first time after such a long while this has happened. This is one reason why areas in the exact east—like Japan and the Middle East—are experiencing many conflicts. The luckiest star—which the wealth star—can be found in the northwest area. You can realize the full potential of luck by checking the direction of your main door, bedroom, bedroom door and headboard. To enhance luck in the northwest area, place a pair of jade money catchers alongside a water fountain. Money catchers have insatiable appetite for wealth, which makes them a good item to enhance the direction of the wealth star; it is also a guide for decisions related to money and finance. The water fountain is a representation of continuous flow, which also motivates wealth. The most unlucky direction of this year is the east, and to alleviate its effect, position a brass gong and a safety medallion. The brass gong and safety medallion are used for safety and to avoid accidents. This will lessen bad luck. You also have to make sure that the east direction will be calm and quiet. Avoid hammering, drilling or renovating in this direction. Noise attracts and motivates bad luck especially in this location where the Disaster Star, Three Killing Star and the Tai Suey are currently located. When placing a luck item, make sure that the area is clean, well-lit and clutter free in order to reach its full potential.

Making Filipinos Believe
meet the people that make your tech-lifestyle a reality SONY PHILIPPINES President & Managing Director
Takao Kuroda
By John Nieves Photo by Benjamin Arnold
You’d think that a well-known brand like Sony wouldn’t have problems getting their products to fly off the shelves. You’d be wrong. Filipinos are notoriously price sensitive, and sometimes it takes a lot of convincing to make them realize the value of a well-built device. It’s up to Sony Philippines President and Managing Director Takao Kuroda to make them believe. As head of one of the biggest and most recognizable tech brands in the country, it’s his job to align Sony’s overall strategy with the peculiarities of the local market.
May2011
He’s very in tune with the local pulse of the market. “The Philippines is more western-influenced compared to other ASEAN countries – buying behavior, trends, and many more. Filipinos are very connected to the internet also and are much updated with all things that are happening outside the country. Thus our efforts and strategies are also different compared to the other ASEAN countries. We are more digitalized so we reach out more through the net now. The Filipinos are very priceconscious too as compared to others but when they do buy something, they make sure that they get their money’s worth.”
82
Thus he has tailored their strategies around the peculiarities of the local market. “We also noticed that Filipinos are very conscious as well with their budget, which is why we always do promos and packages for our loyal consumers. We had our very first Sony 3-Day Sale last year, which was a very successful event because of our loyal consumers. And we also had the BRAVIA trade-in last year as well, wherein people was able to upgrade to a BRAVIA LCD TV by just donating their old CRT TV to Sony’s cause and getting up to 4,000 pesos discount for a new BRAVIA TV. It was also a very successful project.” He adds, “In general, Sony www.gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
is very well loved by the Filipino market and they prefer this brand over all the others. The perfect mix of products and the availability of content is our biggest edge from competitors.” 3D is Sony’s main focus this year, and Mr. Kuroda is introducing products to the local market to expand Sony’s 3D ecosystem. “Since our first showcase of the 3D BRAVIA last year, Sony Philippines continues to introduce 3D consumer products to complete the promised 3D World. From the our legendary PlayStation3 and 3D Blu-Ray allowing playback of 3D content, to the NEX-5 that made 3D Sweep Panorama possible, to the recent unveiling of the new VAIO F, Sony’s 3D, and now, the launching of the new 3D Cyber-shots and Handycams, we are continuing on the path of revolutionizing the 3D experience, to enable consumers to shoot, play, and share their usergenerated 3D content wherever they go,” he said. He adds, “We would like our consumers to fully experience the full force of the 3D World Created by Sony without leaving the comforts of their own home. Mr. Manny Pacquiao, who is our Sony 3D World Ambassador, also shared his seal of approval with all his fans. In the
coming years, you will see more of this technology.” Like many of its contemporaries, Sony has also been affected greatly by recent natural disasters that hit Japan a month ago, but Mr. Kuroda reassures customers that Sony’s operations continue as planned. “Operations at several Sony Corporation and Sony Group sites and facilities have been affected by the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami, and Sony is monitoring the status of each of these sites on an on-going basis, while also considering the most effective recovery measures. The company is currently evaluating the full impact of the earthquake, tsunami and related power outages on Sony’s businesses and consolidated financial results. While certain production sites in Japan have been moderately affected, there has been no report of employee injury or facility damage, and operations continue.” With all of his efforts poured into Sony, it’s a wonder then that Mr. Kuroda is still able to indulge in some of his interests. “I enjoy playing golf, running, going to the cinema and drinking (and singing) with friends.”

Isuzu Philippines donates to Japan calamity victims The 2010 Dealer of the Year awardees of Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC) were supposed to leave for Shanghai, China, in June as an incentive by IPC for being the dealer performers. The trip would have included a mix of 40 delegates from Isuzu Cagayan de Oro, Isuzu Makati and Isuzu Batangas, among others. Instead, through the initiative of the winning dealers themselves, IPC decided to donate the money—amounting to P2.5 million—to the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In a letter sent to the dealer owners to explain the
matter, IPC President Ryoji Yamazaki said: “I realize that this is not a simple matter for everyone concerned as you have all exerted much effort to earn your slot in this trip. Nevertheless, this sacrifice is sure to result in comfort and safety for more people in need.” IPC has turned over the amount to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) which, in turn, will give the donation to Red Cross Japan. The Japan donation is just the latest corporate social responsibility effort by IPC, whose tagline is “Your Responsible Partner.” Every year, it has been a tradition at IPC to launch several CSR projects that are
environment-oriented. The company also donated to typhoon Ondoy victims in 2009 and landslide victims in Leyte in 2006, among others, in its desire to look after the community it does business in. The P2.5-million check was turned over by IPC executives Ryoji Yamazaki (president) and Yuki Kato (EVP) on March 17 in Manila to Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon. “I commend Isuzu for this exemplary humanitarian act,” said Gordon. “It proves that even corporate entities can make sacrifices for the good of others. May this serve as an example for others to follow.”
