ABOUT JULIETTE ARISTIDES
J
uliette Aristides founded the Classical Atelier at the Gage Academy of Fine Art in Seattle, in 2001. This year marks its fifteenth anniversary—a noteworthy milestone for any art
institution. It was the first atelier school of traditional realist painting in the Northwest and for a decade and a half has guided scores of students towards a life of reflective seeing and creating. Although primarily an artist, Aristides is so much more. Teacher, lecturer, writer and arts advocate – her impact on the visual arts in Seattle and across the country has extended far beyond the frame of any one of her paintings. Juliette embarked on her art journey in the 1980s and 90s when art based on careful observation was largely a forgotten discipline. At the time resources were few and information was scant. Like many who were determined to master this neglected art form, she had to cobble together an education, driven by the passion to learn the secrets of how to see and how to record the beauty of what you see. She enrolled in a series of remarkably diverse schools — ranging from the nation’s most prestigious institutions such as National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, to grass-roots, artist-run ateliers such as Barnstone Studios, The Atelier in Minneapolis, and Jacob Collins’ legendary Water Street Studio (which she joined at its inception). Fortunately these schools happened to offer some of the best instruction available at the time. But each program revealed only a part of the puzzle. Aristides had to absorb various techniques and principles from different teachers and distill them into her own holistic vision. Her ability to comfortably synthesize information and readily share it with others lies at the heart of her writing and teaching. It forms the core of the Aristides Classical Atelier. Aristides believes in the Italian Renaissance concept of disegno. This term, which ostensibly means “drawing,” also includes the concept of “design.” To her drawing involves far more than simply copying what you see. It is a complex process where one must analyze and dissect visual information and reconstruct that knowledge on paper or canvas. This process affects the entire person and is a transformative experience. Each student who has had the benefit to study with Aristides comes away with a greater appreciation of the visual wonders of our world. eorgetown Atelier is a thriving full and part-time artistic community in South Seattle, presenting the foundations of classical art as building
blocks for imaginative professional artists. Georgetown programs are designed to develop visually inventive gallery and industry artists alike. Our apprenticeship-style approach specializes in classical drawing, classical painting, and digital painting, offering the guiding principles of the classics as a flexible system that students can ultimately shape to the needs of their own visions and endeavors. Founded by Tenaya Sims 2012 graduate of the Atelier.
DA VINCI INITIATIVE
T
he DaVinici Initiative began as a series of conversations between the Mandy Theis (2015 Atelier graduate) and Juliette Aristides. Mandy,
formally a public school art teacher, envisioned bringing skill based training into public school education using her Atelier training and content from the book Lessons in Classical Drawing. The vision to provide serious artistic skills to children in public school was made a reality by the Art Renewal Center, under the leadership of Kara Ross, in collaboration with Mandy. It has blossomed into a national movement to bring solid art skills to public school children.
The Da Vinci Initiative is a non-profit that supports skill-based, Atelier training in K-12 schools by providing atelier training for art teachers in more than 20 states, hosting atelier workshops for school districts, producing lesson plans that teach visual literacy skills, and more. MASTERCOPY PROGRAM
O
ver the centuries, artists in studios, private collections, and museums around the world have reproduced famous works of art with the goal of furthering their edu-
cation. Artists such as Rubens, Velazquez, Fantin-Latour, Ingres and Degas have all spent periods of time studying great paintings. Frye Art Museum partners with the Aristides Atelier, allowing select advanced-level art students from the Atelier program at Gage Academy of Art to create copies of works from the Museum’s collections. Re-Mastered is the only museum program in Seattle that allows student artists to create master copies from original artworks using traditional media in a gallery setting. Visitors are invited to speak with artists about their experiences as they paint in the Museum’s galleries. CAPITOL CIDER Seattle’s favorite public house is the home to a permanent exhibition of mastercopies produced by the Aristides Atelier. he Aristides Atelier would have not been the same without the collabo-
ration and friendship of David Dwyer who has co-taught this program since 2008. David is a realist painter who specializes in still life and floral painting and pastel figure drawing. He exhibits his work locally and nationally and has been featured in the books Classical Drawing Atelier, Classical Painting Atelier, Lessons in Classical Drawing, and Lessons in Classical Painting as well as Artists’ Magazine and Artists and Illustrators Magazine and the 2007 cover of the Stranger Magazine. A 2007 graduate of the Aristides Atelier, Dwyer is a passionate advocate for realist art education. He currently the Board President of the Gage Academy of Art; he leads specialized workshops for artists and educators and actively participates in the in the Frye Art Museum’s Re-Mastered program.

ver the years the principles of an Atelier education have been made available to a wider audience through our books and video. These documents give readers a glimpse of
Atelier training and feature many works by our current and graduating students. Ateliers, which have produced some of the greatest artists of all time, are experiencing a renaissance.
