In a step-by-step approach, begin building your drawing with a block-in, the foundation of the classical drawing process, and then model the large and small forms with tonal values. This workshop focuses on the quick sketch, as you practice reducing a scene to its key elements. Pencil, pen or watercolor; emphasis is placed on recording the basics — the viewer’s impression and main idea. An understanding of general principals of perspective is helpful, but guidelines, vanishing points, etc., are foregone in favor of loose capture, while still invoking the artist’s subjective viewpoint and sensibility. Class is held outdoors as the weather permits, but principles can be demonstrated and explored through interior settings and still-lifes. Each day includes a demo on a specific focus: contours, contrast, composition, artist compositional options and more. D1576SU

Monday  9:30am-12:30pm  6/29-7/27

Experimenting with traditional watercolor techniques including various washes, glazes and scumbles, stretch the boundaries and experiment with looser approaches and different color pallets for flesh tones. This course is a study in both drawing portraits and application of watercolor in portrait painting. Study from live models focusing on the head, facial structures and proportion emphasizing the economy of line; capturing the essentials of the human face with simple contours, but without shading or value, allowing the watercolor to build the volume and structure of the head and face and render the values. Light, shade, form and volume are constructed in gestural, broad strokes with the interplay of warm and cool colors with multiple layers of watercolor. Drawing experience recommended. Beginning

P1577SU

This rigorous workshop addresses accurate drawing of the large forms and gestures of the figure, the translation of those forms into color masses, the depiction of the color of the light that pervades an environment, as well as paint handling, surface preparation and other technical issues. Working quickly and decisively on one-day figure paintings, you learn to simplify complex observed scenarios, create compelling personal compositions with the human figure as your subject and create paintings that work as a cohesive whole.

Advance your understanding of the human figure’s complex construction while heightening your ability to draw a figure from observation. This workshop is designed to bridge the gap between standard life drawing practices and anatomical studies of the figure. Working from the model you systematically draw the figure to fit landmarks within a set proportion system. Simultaneously, you further your understanding of the figure’s structure by geometrically breaking down the forms of the figure as they are posed in space. Emphasis on gesture, balance and proportion are stressed throughout to aid in the illusion of credibly posed figures. You should leave this class with a better understanding of the figure’s key landmarks, form sense and construction as well as a greater ability to render a figure from life and from memory.

While attending the Boston Normal Art School in the late 19th century, artist and educator Albert H. Munsell (1858-1918) was keenly aware that a practical theory of color did not exist. From his own work and experiments, he devised the Munsell Color System, a practical notation system in which color is defined according to hue, value, and chroma. Munsell’s work was hugely influential in evolving color science theory at the turn of the century, and served as the basis for today’s color matching technology.

Discover the techniques behind painting flesh tones in egg tempera as it was practiced in 14th and 15th Century Italy, and as documented by Cennino Cennini in his book Il Libro dell’Arte. We paint a head starting with an ink underdrawing, progressing to a green underpainting, adding verdaccio in the shadow areas, adding reds to warm areas, then glazing warm tones and judiciously taking away the greens. In this five-day workshop students create collage works directly from the figure model, developing a dynamic, colorful composition with multiple figures from cut paper. The first session is a, “color lab” in which the group creates a rich palette of painted papers to be used throughout the week. This is a full range of tertiary and saturated colors for expressing the geometry of pictorial space through value, temperature and intensity.

FIGURE COLLAGE: VALUE & TEMPERATURE

The errors that distort a portrait drawing begin with the very first pencil strokes, and express misconceptions about the subject of the drawing. Typically, they are hard, dark lines drawn to represent symbols of mistakenly conceived objects, i.e, the head, face and features of the model. Discover an approach to basic block-in construction, including point-to-point vision, measuring length and tilt by eye, looking for the non-parallelism of the two sides of the form, avoidance of horizontals and verticals and more. Students work on one-day poses with the focus on block-in rather than finished drawing.

Venture outside of the, “figure drawing box” by exploring alternative mediums to render the human figure. Classical ideas of rendering form are stressed throughout, but realized with unique techniques and supplies. Working from the model each day you focus on a new combination of different drawing mediums, such as ballpoint pen, acrylic, shellac and sandpaper on prepared surfaces of paper and wood. Approach this with an open mind and get outside your comfort zone so that you leave this workshop on a path to broadening your skill set and open doors to new ways of creating an image.

The Aristides Atelier, based on time-tested studio traditions, offers the opportunity to study classical drawing and painting techniques with master artist Juliette Aristides. Information is presented in a variety of formats intended to enable students of all levels to grasp even the most difficult concepts. You graduate with an unparalleled understanding of the principles of art. The Aristides Atelier curriculum is designed to provide fundamental drawing and painting skills with a strong emphasis on observation from life. Like the great studios of the past, working from the human figure in life drawing and painting forms a pillar of our program.

The Kang-O’Higgins Atelier emphasizes drafting and painting skills to empower you with the language you need to achieve full visual expression. Led by Mark Kang-O’Higgins, this course cultivates fluency with anatomical and technical knowledge, but also goes far beyond technique. You are encouraged to find your own forms of expression as you build familiarity with many different approaches to the figure embodied in historical and contemporary drawing and painting techniques. To this end, you engage in exercises that explore tonal relationships, light, measurement, figure structure and anatomy, and are expected to have a solid understanding of these issues in order to progress.

The Faigin Atelier works with a small group of painting students interested in focusing their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of a year. Atelier instructor and Gage co-founder Gary Faigin uses still-life as a vehicle to teach the basics of representation, including value, drawing and perspective, as well as paint-specific techniques like glazing, impasto and control of edges. For more advanced students, studio still-life is a time-honored subject with unlimited potential. No other subject matter offers the artist quite as much control over every aspect of their pictorial effect, and none has as rich and interesting a history.

The Magrath Sculpture Atelier is a multi-year, part-time Atelier designed to confer the core disciplines needed to become a practicing figurative sculptor at a high level of excellence. Led by celebrated sculptor Michael Magrath, students learn to become adept in both traditional approaches as well as contemporary concerns in a variety of media. Build cumulatively upon the core skills of drawing and modeling from life, while adding critical understanding of anatomy and composition in the round and relief, as well as technical skills such as mold making, casting, basic fabrication and subtractive techniques in wood, stone, metal and composite materials.

The Georgetown Atelier at Gage Academy of Art is located in Seattle’s eclectic Georgetown neighborhood. Designed to provide students with a solid foundation in traditional drawing and painting, the Atelier features a curriculum of both observational and constructive methods to provide a balanced education. Founding instructor Tenaya Sims, a graduate of the Aristides Atelier, has both extensive training as a classical artist and an industry professional, and has modeled the curriculum from both territories. The Georgetown Atelier offers students a variety of programs to meet the needs of diverse interests, budgets and schedules, including full- and part-time programs in classical drawing and painting, digital painting and illustration.
