Capture highly detailed scenes as you learn techniques for combining contour drawings, grisaille underpaintings and watercolor glazes. Simplify complex scenes into initial sketches that are light and loose, and then create a grisaille underpainting that brings extraordinary dimension to your work. Move on to using a limited watercolor palette to enhance your piece with harmonious color. Practice expressive contour lines to create depth and hatching techniques to create texture. Instruction includes specific examples and many in-class demonstrations. D16011W

Quickly learn to capture a variety of gestures of the human figure at a small scale from life. Emphasis is on observation, body structure and knowledge of proportion to create a new figure each one or two class sessions. As sessions progress, learn to observe from life and better understand gestures three-dimensionally. Sculpted gestures include a range of standing and sitting poses. Because you are capturing a variety of sketch poses by breaking down and re-building a new gesture each class, you become accustomed to working with the figure as a whole, and be better able to judge your own work with a critical eye. Instruction includes working alongside students, demonstrations, critiques and individual feedback throughout the class. Students wishing to keep the models from each class session may pay an extra fee per armature. S16003W

The building blocks of abstraction are line, form, color, value and surface. The "subject" of the drawing could be the process of its making or the materialization of a vision, or fall somewhere in between process and vision. D16008W

Learn the foundation of classical figure drawing through the practice of the short pose. Develop techniques to capture the movement of poses, and to make simple yet elegant and dynamic figure drawings. A requisite for the serious figure artist, you emerge with a durable reference figure and irreplaceable anatomical expertise. The Aristides Atelier, based on time-tested studio traditions, offers the opportunity to study classical drawing and painting techniques with master artist Juliette Aristides. Information is presented in a variety of formats intended to enable students of all levels to grasp even the most difficult concepts. You graduate with an unparalleled understanding of the principles of art. The Aristides Atelier curriculum is designed to provide fundamental drawing and painting skills with a strong emphasis on observation from life. Like the great studios of the past, working from the human figure in life drawing and painting forms a pillar of our program.
Challenging and inspiring for artists of all skill-levels, the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier empowers artists with the tools and techniques to express their individual vision and develop their own artistic voice. Rooted in the figurative tradition but often deeply personal in style and consciously narrative in content, KOH artists build familiarity with many different approaches to both the human figure and the still-life, as well as other subjects in a variety of media, and learn to express complexity and nuance through a sophisticated array of skills.
The Faigin Atelier works with a small group of painting students interested in focusing their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of a year. Atelier instructor and Gage co-founder Gary Faigin uses still-life as a vehicle to teach the basics of representation, including value, drawing and perspective, as well as paint-specific techniques like glazing, impasto and control of edges. For more advanced students, studio still-life is a time-honored subject with unlimited potential. No other subject matter offers the artist quite as much control over every aspect of their pictorial effect, and none has as rich and interesting a history.

art history: a personal journey
1/21-3/17[9 wks]
BEGINNING IN FALL, 2015, Gage Academy of Art is proud to present a series of lectures on art history. Featuring Gage teaching artists as well as art historians from the Seattle art community, these lectures feature an intimate look inside the artists and movements that helped shape art from the Renaissance through the 20th Century. Register online for a single lecture, a quarterly series or the entire 2015-16 program, and delve into the techniques, ideologies and personalities that define art in our world.
Explore a clear and intuitive method for seeing form and understanding the structure of the human body as a foundation of artistic expression, allowing for more accurate drawing and composition. Discussion topics include anatomical detail as it relates to the working of bones and musculature, as well as overall shapes and general principles of construction and action as exhibited on the model.
