ABSTRACT MARK MAKING
Artwork by Jeffrey Simmons
painting
While abstract painters are not alone in using unusual techniques to inspire new imagery, the history of abstract painting is full of artists who moved beyond the traditional brush-on-canvas methods. Studying under the guidance of renowned artist Jeffrey Simmons, this class examines different non-traditional approaches to mark making — such as staining, stenciling, and dragging paint — while finding inspiration from the history of abstraction. All levels $255
BASICS OF OIL PAINTING
Develop a foundational knowledge of oil painting material and technique through hands-on exercises. Combine your new knowledge with drawing skills to understand the concepts of contour, value, shape, volume, form and perspective for a more comprehensive experience. Principles of paint handling and proper use of material, will go hand-in-hand with building skills to render still-life objects progressively from simple to more complex. Beginner $255

Tue 1:30pm-4:30pm 6/26-7/24 The most efficient way to develop your observation and intuition simultaneously is to practice Alla Prima painting. The ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses, these elements hold the power and personality within a portrait. In this class, we will work with a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim.

Working from a live model, you will systematically draw the figure to fit landmarks within a set proportion system. Emphasis will be given to gesture, balance, and proportion to aid in the illusion of credibility. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of the figure’s key landmarks, form sense, construction, and gain greater ability to render a figure from life and memory.s. BAS-RELIEF SCULPTING
Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 6/9-6/10
Develop drawing skills beyond two dimensions by working compositions in clay. This uncommon art form, rarely practiced nowadays, has been historically used in art, architecture, and even coin and medal minting. Students will learn to capture the likeness of a portrait through compositions that are simple to mold in clay into finished works, and learn the skills necessary to create subtle details in relief. Instruction will include demonstrations, critiques, and individual feedback throughout the class.

Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 7/7-7/8
Applying color theory principles and using specific exercises, we will learn methods for color mixing and layering; how to mix beautiful grays and neutrals; and how to identify and recreate colors in nature. This class is designed for students who already have some experience with watercolor and want to learn how to make the most dynamic use of color in abstract painting.

REALISTIC FLESH TONES IN OIL
Fri-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 7/20-7/22
Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 7/21-7/22
Create lively and realistic flesh tones in oil by copying masterworks from the classical tradition. Students may use limited (two and three color) palettes, as well as full-color flesh palettes. Intermediate $215
Join us for a storytelling workshop, where our main focus will be on the conceptualization, writing and drawing of a short-form, multi-page comic. Using the tools learned in class, students will work start-to-finish on a story of their own design, with the goal to create a three-page visually compelling narrative by the end of the workshop. All $315
Fri-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 7/20-7/22
In this three-day workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of how to build upon observation and extend into the imaginative. On the first day, you are introduced to core principles and exercises and begin by re-shaping a rock as a still-life object in your drawings. During the following days, you will learn to create an invented/ imaginary composition that draws both from the live model, the re-shaped rock, as well as external or internal sources. PORTRAITS IN WATERCOLOR
Sat-Sun 9:30am-4:30pm 7/14-7/15
Experimenting with traditional watercolor techniques including various washes, glazes, and scumbles, we'll stretch the boundaries and experiment with looser approaches and different color palettes for flesh tones. Studying from a live model, we will focus on the head, facial structures, and proportion, and emphasize the economy of line. We will capture the essentials of the human face using simple contours, but without shading or value, allowing the watercolor to build the volume and structure of the head and face and render the values. SUMMER OF LOVE
“
My portraits evolve slowly, over a series of sittings. My hope is that the model will forget my presence, and drift ever deeper into her thoughts. Though I pay acute attention to the body's expression of those thoughts, I am aware that she is offering me only glimpses into her private world. As a teacher, my goal is to help my students explore pastel and the emotional and physical complexity of the human presence, and weave the elements into a unified image.
"
“
As an educator, I strive to empower fellow artists to achieve excellence in their craft by fostering a set of rational tools— both optical and conceptual—that can help support, guide, and illuminate the emotional experience of drawing and painting from life.
"
Eric Elliott
After having relocated to Colorado as Assistant Professor of Painting at Colorado Mesa University, Eric is back to teach at Gage! I’ve known Eric for years -- since the days of his Behnke Foundation's Neddy Artist Fellowship award. For those who know his art, Eric’s “Observing Abstractly” workshop speaks volumes of his process and inspiration.
“
Painting and drawing is just communication through line, shape, edge, and color. First you have to learn how to see it and then you have to learn how to use it. And, once you learn the basics of the language, communication becomes easier, but that doesn't mean that you're going to be Hemingway. That takes lots of practice, and even then a little luck helps.
