It’s Show Season! As the show season starts to warm up here on the west coast, it is already in full swing in the southern states. California and Florida have seen what Canadians can do, and it is exciting to read about the their adventures (see Canadians Shine in the South, p. 30).

in the Christine Traurig clinic in February and the Charlotte Dujardin clinic in Los Angeles March 8th and 9th. Charlotte rode one horse on the Saturday, and chose Kobal, and had nothing but good things to say about him and Leslie’s training of him. If Charlotte had a bigger suitcase, she’d be taking him home with her! The second day, Charlotte had Leslie riding lots of leg yields and circles in passage, and piaffe pirouettes, to get the hind leg quicker, much to the delight of the oohing and aahing audience.

THE SUSTAINABLE ATHLETE: ARE INJURIES PREVENTABLE?

T

raditionally, equine veterinarians have been trained primarily to treat problems that already exist. However, I have always thought of myself as a professional that would like to prevent injuries rather than to treat them. Despite being trained as a surgeon, I only like to do surgery when it is strictly necessary and the benefits outweigh the risks. I prefer to be a “preventionist,” if you like. As a specialist in equine sports medicine, I want to instill in riders the value of proper conditioning and training to produce a

14

April 2014

sustainable, durable athlete and reduce the risk of injury. In today’s competition environment, horses are subjected to higher stresses and workload than ever before; therefore the margin for error becomes quite small. Riders, trainers, and owners are under high pressure to compete and succeed. Appropriate conditioning, both physical and psychological, becomes critical to success. We need to understand that athletes (whether equine or human) need an integrative support

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

www.gaitpost.com

team to maximize the chances of being successful. The higher the expectations, the more critical this becomes. The question always is: are injuries preventable? There are no substantial studies that look into the issue. However, one can always look at the mechanisms of injury, and with an understanding of the biological operation of an organism, we can conclude that many injuries are indeed preventable. So many of the injuries that I see on a daily basis are the result of fatigue, inappropriate conditioning, or simply ignoring or failing to recognize early signs of trouble (a bit of heat, mild pain, or inflammation). So what can we do about this? The first step is to choose the appropriate horse for the job: genetics specific for the discipline, clean medical history, and suitable conformation. Foot conformation is especially important. The second step is to condition the horse appropriately, beginning with a foundation where strength, stamina, and speed can be built upon. This is perhaps the most time consuming aspect and where patience really becomes a virtue. As each horse is different, it is imperative that we follow the tempo of the horse and work on the psychological aspects of happiness, confidence, and trust in addition to physical conditioning. I cannot overstress how important it is not to rush through these steps. In general terms, it may take around 12 weeks to build an appropriate foundation in a performing horse. During the conditioning period, we need to introduce exercises where the proprioceptive ability of the horse is developed and enforced. Proprioception is the ability of the body to sense its orientation in space. This becomes exceedingly important in disciplines where speed or large forces are encountered, as inappropriate

placement of feet during performance may lead to acute injuries. In addition, flexibility and strength are trained through the use of training aids and ground exercises specifically designed for this purpose. The stronger the horse, the more resistance to fatigue—and the less fatigue, the less prone the horse will be to injuries. The training and conditioning process ideally needs to be monitored by a qualified veterinarian trained in sports medicine. A veterinarian would coordinate the trainer and rider’s efforts, as well as the others members of the team such as farriers, chiropractors, and massage therapists. Monitoring should be based if at all possible on objective outcome parameters. There are scientific ways to monitor the response of the body to the effects of exercise. They include heart rate monitors, blood lactate levels, MRI studies (specifically in racehorses), and movement analysis among other things. Although these are not yet widely used, they should have an important place in the conditioning program of equine athletes. Once the horse is ready to start more discipline specific training, we must also take into consideration work intensity, travel, and competition schedules. Horses are not machines or tools, so we must consider each horse’s abilities and needs prior to designing an exercise schedule. As training progresses, we must pay close attention to the horse’s condition, level of happiness (a painful horse is an unhappy horse), and movement variations. It is imperative to keep an eye on possible signs that might herald injury, such as crankiness, heat, or swelling. The rider must know the horse’s legs like the palm of his or her hand. The legs should be evaluated daily before and after work for any changes from baseline. Performance horses should have

an appropriate warm-up and cool down followed by icing legs and application of wraps after each workout. An appropriate warm-up is 15-20 minutes of active walking with some trot. Stretching exercises should be performed once the horse is warmed up, so ideally one should dismount, perform some stretches, and remount to continue with work. The benefits of appropriate warm-up are well known and scientifically demonstrated. Not only does warm-up allow the musculoskeletal tissues to become more pliable and flexible, but it also increases the heart rate to accom-

modate the needs of the impending exercise. This ensures blood flow to organs, muscles, and extremities are appropriate to cover the requirements of exercise. Each training session must have specific targets in mind for rider and horse, and both units need to work in unison for a successful session. Once the work has been completed, the horse should be cooled down until heart rate has decreased to below 60 beats per minute. In fit horses, this may occur in 10-15 minutes, possibly sooner depending of the intensity of exercise performed. Following the cool down period, stretches should again be performed and the horse’s legs should be iced and wrapped. There are many benefits of cold therapy post-exercise, and there is ample information to support its use. The best way to cool the legs is with a machine such as GameReady that applies both compression and ice, but cold hosing or ice boots are preferable to doing nothing. There are many more aspects of the equine athlete’s well-being that go beyond the scope of this article. However, the most important thing to take from this is that the incidence of injuries in sport horses can be reduced with appropriate daily care and dedication. The real success is not how many horses succeed under a specific program, but how many horses remain in the program along the way. All the drugs in the world cannot be substituted for an appropriate conditioning program. Dr. Antonio Cruz has extensive experience with various horse breeds and disciplines of horse sport including Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds, Show Jumpers and Dressage horses. His clinical activities, albeit broad, have always leaned towards lameness and orthopedics and his research at the University of Guelph was focused on lameness and bone adaptation to exercise and arthritis. Dr. Cruz is also fully trained and experienced in all facets of equine surgery including arthroscopy (joint/OCD surgery), laparoscopy, colic, oral/dental, foal surgery, cervical stabilization (wobbler) surgery and all aspects of soft tissue surgery. His wealth of practical and clinical experience will now be available to other vets in BC that are in need of a specialist and also for routine procedures.

he Town of Caledon Parks and Recreation Department, along with its partners, the Toronto 2015 Pan American/Parapan American Games Organizing Committee (TO2015), the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, and Equestrian Management Group, announced that a contractor team has been selected for the next phase of construction at the Caledon Equestrian Park. Led by Caledon’s own Sierra Excavation, the next phase will see the construction of the Pavilion Building, judges’ tower, and septic system. The demolition of the existing Pavilion took place on January 27, and the new buildings are scheduled to be in use for the 2014 horse show season. “This is obviously a hugely important project for the Town of Caledon,” said Mayor Marolyn Morrison. “And to be able to award it to a local team of such outstanding quality is a tremendous benefit for Caledon. I’m so proud that we have local people working to build this legacy project.”

“We’ve been looking forward to getting going on this next major milestone,” said Craig Collins, CEO of Equestrian Management Group. “The construction of the new grandstand will serve as a distinguishing landmark for this community, and for equestrian sport.” “When putting together my team, I wanted to ensure that we had a team that understood the agricultural style and nature of this project,” said Dominic Scrivo, President of Sierra Excavation. “And I’m also proud of the fact that local trades are front and center.” After a public call for proposals, the team of Sierra Excavating Enterprises Inc. of Caledon, and LD Cairns of Alliston/Cookstown, was selected to construct the next phase of the Caledon Equestrian Park project. ARE YOU READY TO COACH?

I

hope the short coaching articles in the last couple of issues have you thinking: • Do you have knowledge and experience and dream of teaching riding lessons? • Are you already teaching or coaching and starting to think about becoming certified? • Do you regularly attend horseshows and have students who are successful? If any of the above pertains to you, seek advice on how to achieve your goal and get on track! There are many benefits to becoming a certified coach or instructor. The most common reason cited by many is that a certified coach gets cheaper insurance. Although this is true, the reasons to become certified are many. As the coaching program in Canada grows and develops, it is becoming advantageous to become certified. Certified coaches are respected because during the evaluation process they must prove their competency. There are prerequisites. There are tasks to complete, lesson plans to write and outcomes to prove competency. A certified coach has had a criminal record check, has done an online test on “Making Ethical Decisions”, and has done First Aid. They have an Emergency Action Plan in place. They must stay current by www.gaitpost.com

submitting updating hours. They work within Canada’s Long Term Equestrian Development model. They have proven their commitment to the sport and their students. They are part of a “system”. At first this sounds like a daunting task. But it need not be. Lifelong education and professional development are important in every chosen career. How do you get started? First step is to go to either the HCBC or EC websites and read all the helpful material. Look into the Learn to Ride program and prepare for these riding tests. Take lessons! Watch clinics! Enjoy the learning! Next would be to contact HCBC’s manager of coaching, Wendy, and open a file. Now the very important part…… choose a mentor to help you learn to teach and coach. It is important that this mentor is familiar with our national coaching program. Look into the many excellent training courses which are offered in our province. Finally, read, absorb, and be prepared to live our Coaching Code of Ethics. As a famous person once said, “In sport we do more than develop athletes — we create good citizens.” How true!

Its founder, Dr. Mark Dedomenico, was first introduced to the Thoroughbred industry by his father, and in 1970 they purchased Woods Creek Training Center, a facility in Monroe, WA, capable of housing 120 horses in training. With decades of experience and success in the industry came a desire to open a facility nearer to the sport horse and racing population, and in 2004 he purchased 100 acres and began construction of Pegasus Training and Rehabilitation Center. It offers to the equestrian community accessibility to the highest veterinary standards and equipment, a staff of experts, and proven training that yields results on the track. We are currently involved in several research projects being conducted at Pegasus, and we feel that the lay-up time for most injuries can be decreased with the

use of hyperbarics and aqua therapy. We have seen impressive results with horses returning to competition at the same level or even a higher level than they did pre-injury. As well, Dr. McIlwraith has found bio-markers in the blood that warn you if your horse is about to suffer an injury.” Plans for the future include the addition of an operating room, diagnostic treadmill lab and an expansion into podiatry. Dr. Dedomenico, along with Dr. Gordon Cohen, a pediatric cardiovascular and transplant surgeon, have begun to focus research into determining the cause of Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage in equines. He is proud of his vision and the facility that it has produced, but receives the most satisfaction from knowing he has served the industry he loves. “We are proud to offer our customers the highest quality equine facility and staff, which has resulted in a long list of stakes winners and a significant number of horses we have been able to return to competition through our training and rehabilitation programs.”

cultural Winter Fair and looks forward to another exciting event in November 2014. Jump Canada has awarded the 2014 CET Medal Finals, to the Royal West, produced by Rocky Mountain Show Jumping. The Royal West horse show will be held this October at the Agrium Western Event Centre in Calgary, AB. The venue is currently being constructed with a completion date set for June, and will also be the new home of the Calgary Stampede. This highly-anticipated new competition was conceptualized and brought to fruition by CET veteran and Canadian Olympian, John Anderson, who also operates Calgary’s popular Rocky Mountain Show Jumping venue. Anderson’s plans for the Royal West include a focus on international Show Jumping, complemented by national Hunter and Jumper classes, breedspecific competition, indoor Eventing, and other equine-related entertainment. He also plans to add Western Canadian flair through Barrel Racing, “Mutton Busting,” and much more. Having the Royal West host the 26th edition of the CET National Medal Finals (which will mark the first time in history the final takes place outside of the Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair) is especially meaningful, since Anderson’s mother, Barbara, was the founder of the CET Medal series. During the 25th anniversary of the CET National Medal Finals at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 2013, Barbara was honoured for her long-standing commitment to the next generation of Canadian riders. Jump Canada is pleased to recognize this exciting new competition, and eagerly anticipates its inauguration in the fall of 2014. 2013 hCBC AWArdS gALA The Horse Council BC Awards Gala was held on March 8, 2014 to celebrate the athletes, coaches, horses, volunteers and all around amazing people who stood out in 2013. just to celebrate at the Awards Gala and to get a chance to meet and mingle with the nominees, speakers from the Summit earlier in the day, and other guests. QMFM Radio Announcer, Crystal Darche, was the host for this year’s big Gala and was an absolute star. She was the perfect host for the evening, adding an element of humour and lightness to the whole event. The HCBC Awards Gala would not have been the same without her. Steve Charles from Totem Photographics was the photographer for the evening and everyone had a great time posing in front of the logo banner and the “paparazzi” to get their photos taken! The Youth High School Recognition Achievement Award was presented to Emily Lim, Courtney Palleson, Natasha Grapes, Kathleen Penner, Lindsay Stuart, Roechelle Hrehorka, Rebecca Alves, and Natalie Alves. The Alf Fletcher Youth Sportsmanship Award was presented to five dedicated riders for their exemplary show of sportsmanship at competitions throughout the year. These riders were Winter Koyote, Sage Loeppky, Emily Winkel, Mackenzie Nelson, and Hannah Beaulieu. The Best Competition of 2013 went to the Mountain Magic Endurance Ride CEI 1*. This was a full day of competition which included Limited Distance, Open 50 mile and FEI. Competitors came from all over British Columbia, including Vancouver Island. This ride increased the level of competition in B.C. and brought new enthusiasm for international competition to Endurance. The Bob James Volunteer of the Year Award went to Deb Oakman, an extraordinary volunteer with the Back Country Horsemen of BC, North Vancouver Island Chapter. Deb was pivotal in getting Vancouver Island’s first equine campsites built and in having a 40km trail designated to be protected for all recreational users. Coach of the Year was awarded to Brent and Laura Balisky. They are a remarkable team of coaches from the Lower Mainland. In 2013 not only did they successfully complete their High Performance Coach certification with Equine Canada, 2 of only 3 coaches in Canada www.gaitpost.com

to have achieved this level, they had a fantastic year of showing with their students. Athlete of the Year went to Brian Morton. Brian was named Top Canadian Rider at the Spruce Meadows Masters in 2014 along with successfully competing and winning in Hunter Jumper shows across North America. The Horse Industry Professional of the Year went to Jack Polo, General Manager of the Maple Ridge Equi-Sports Centre. Jack is known and highly respected for his generosity and ‘can-do’ attitude. He is always willing to work with clubs and riders to make their experience at MREC the best it can be. The Horse of the Year Award – Non Competitive went to How ‘Bout Jose, New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society’s mascot. Jose was a favourite on the racetrack and is now a favourite at New Stride. He helps new volunteers get accustomed to working with horses and is the face of New Stride’s sponsorship program. The Horse of the Year Award – Competitive went to the BC born and bred Warmblood, Lucky Boy. Lucky Boy is the mount of local rider Kaylie Martinoff and had a very successful competition career in 2013. The newly named Sherman Olson Lifetime Achievement Award honours individuals who have made exceptional contributions to BC’s equestrian community. This year the Sherman Olson Lifetime Achievement Award was awarded to Pam Arthur. It is hard to find an avid equestrian in BC who does not mention Pam Arthur as one of their key influences and mentors as coach, official or trainer. The extensive list of her past students who have gone on to achieve successful coaching and riding careers is impressive and shows Pam’s positive committed influence. Canada’s Olympic Eventing Team Member, Hawley Bennett-Awad, had this to say; “Pam was instrumental in the success of taking Hank from a pony club mount to a four star event horse. She is the best, most knowledgeable horse person I have ever been around, and is the best teacher I have ever seen teach.” Congratulations to all the nominees and winners for the 2013 HCBC Awards! A big thank you to all of the sponsors and attendees.

n response to recent discussions in the equestrian community about the length of time that FEI anti-doping cases may take to prosecute, the FEI is keen to clarify its procedures. “It is the FEI’s role to ensure the full integrity of competition and fair play, while at the same time ensuring that the rights of the athlete are fully protected,” FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos said. “As an international governing body, the FEI cannot allow that athletes would ever be condemned or sanctioned without having the proper opportunities to defend themselves. It is of course regrettable, on every level, whenever there is a positive finding, but the FEI has to follow due process in the interest of all parties involved.” Following the confirmation of a positive sample, it is the FEI’s duty to prove to the Tribunal that there has been a violation of the Equine

Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations (EADCMR). A positive finding is simply the start of the process. In the event of a provisional suspension being imposed following a positive finding, the Person Responsible (PR) can apply at any time for a preliminary hearing to request lifting of the provisional suspension. The PR has the right to contest the positive finding, including challenging the sample collection and analysis procedures to the Tribunal. The PR also has the right to provide an explanation for the presence of the prohibited substance in order to reduce or eliminate the applicable sanction. The finding of a rule violation can only be made once the case has been heard by the Tribunal. It is only when the Tribunal confirms in its Final Decision that there is a rule violation that the automatic disqualification from the compe-

iN mEmoriAm: gENErAL PiEro d’iNZEo (iTA), 1923-2014 General Piero d’Inzeo, one of Italy’s greatest Olympic Jumping champions, has died at the age of 90 in Rome, just three months after his younger brother Raimondo passed away. The brothers, who were both military officers, were the first athletes in the world to compete in eight Olympic Games. Piero D’Inzeo, who would have celebrated his 91st birthday on 4 March, won a total of six Olympic medals. At his first Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1956, he claimed individual bronze and team silver. He then won individual silver and team bronze at Rome in 1960, followed by team bronze in Tokyo in 1964 and Munich in 1972. At each of these Games, Piero and Raimondo shared the glory and special bond of team gold. Piero d’Inzeo also won medals at four consecutive FEI European Championships. He took the individual title in 1959 at the Parc des Princes in Paris (FRA), individual silver in Aachen (GER) in 1958 and 1961, and shared silver with the legendary Hans Günther Winkler in London (GBR) in 1962, the same year that d’Inzeo won the prestigious Dublin Grand Prix in Ireland. As well as his incredible medal haul, Piero d’Inzeo had a formidable international track record, winning numerous Grand Prix. He won the Aachen Grand Prix a record four times between 1952 and 1965, and it was not until 2013 that this impressive tally was matched by Great Britain’s London 2012 team gold medallist Nick Skelton. www.gaitpost.com

tition can be applied. Other sanctions may also be imposed by the Tribunal. The FEI is a signatory to the WADA Code and has to respect the WADA principles, which include the right to a fair hearing. All parties involved have to be given time to prepare their submissions in order to properly defend themselves. Signatories to the WADA Code apply the same principles, and sports involving animals have to be consistent with the WADA Code. Piero d’inzeo (iTA), who with his brother and teammate raimondo were the first athletes in the world to compete in eight olympic games, is pictured on Uruguay at the Stockholm 1956 olympic games where he took individual bronze and team silver.

To this day, Piero d’Inzeo also remains the rider with the most wins at the Rome CSIO in the famous Piazza di Siena (ITA), with a phenomenal total of 64 victories, seven of them in the Grand Prix. On Piero’s 90th birthday last March, the Italian Defence General Staff awarded a joint medal of honour to the two brothers, Piero and Raimondo. Together they represented a golden age of Jumping and created an incredible equestrian and Olympic legacy for Italy. In recognition of Piero d’Inzeo’s Olympic contribution, his body was laid in state at the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) Hall of Honour, prior to his funeral this week. “Piero d’Inzeo was an officer and a gentleman,” said John Roche, FEI Director Jumping. “With his brother Raimondo he accomplished great things. The world has lost a great horseman.”

Pavicic’s success began on February 21 when she topped the leaderboard in the FEI Grand Prix with a score of 69.440%. “I was really happy with my horse today,” said Pavicic of her win. “He was a little bit tired when I brought him out, but overall, super rideable and relaxed. My goal was to be mistake-free, and I accomplished that for the most part. I’m really happy about that.” She followed up the next day with an even score of 70% to win the FEI Grand Prix Special. “It’s been a fantastic journey,” added Pavicic, speaking about her six-year partnership with Don Daiquiri. “I think that’s the really great thing about this sport. I am also extremely fortunate to have a highly supportive family (huge shout out to my hubby David especially!), friends, clients, supporters, and sponsors. Thank you everyone! GP: Have you had to change how you manage your horses in the hotter, damp climate? KP: The weather has been challenging, can be very hot and humid (apparently it’s been unusually warm this season) but can also get quite cold at times, too. The first CDI in January I had my down coat on, 2 weeks later at the next one it was 29 degrees at midnight still! Difficult to manage for sure! Good quality hay is challenging to get and it is also very expensive! GP: What’s next? When do you come home? KP: I have 2 more CDI’s here, mid March and end of March. I am hoping to qualify for WEG, however one score is required between May 1st and June 30th. This is extremely difficult to obtain on the west coast. Good question re: Home! Really it all depends on how the next two competitions go. If things continue to go well then I will either stay east to obtain my scores or travel to Europe. I hope to be home in early April (myself, not the horses, if my scores look good) for a couple of weeks. GP: How are you managing the logistics of a long distance family? KP: I met up with my husband in Toronto last weekend (he was there for business), and he and the kids will be coming for part of Spring Break later this month. It’s the hardest on me, I believe, as they still have their regular activities and routines, family, friends and school. I’m afraid that I do get terribly homesick, however having Ashley Moore and Kat Southam as well as some good friends visiting from home is very helpful! GP: What is the atmosphere in Wellington? KP: The atmosphere is amazing! Never have I experienced anything quite like it before... everything is horsey and it is a very small community. Everywhere you go you will see somewww.gaitpost.com

one that you know that’s in the horse industry. There are many, many social events with invitations to events, and/or parties almost every day of the week (sometimes multiple invitations on the same night!). There is always something to do, day and night. Because it is so concentrated, there are many more opportunities here. The Adequan Global Dressage Festival Series has done a fantastic job promoting Dressage shows here and they have worked hard to gain more sponsorship, therefore offering quite a lot of prize money. As a result, they have had some if the largest CDI’s to date! I believe that next year it will attract even more horses and riders. It is a fantastic Canadians Shine continued on page 61

Lying well outside the top-18 qualification zone as the class began, his result sent him rocketing all the way up the leaderboard from 31st to 14th place and into a place at the Final in Lyon, France in seven weeks’ time.

The course yielded 12 clear rounds out 50 entries for an exciting jump-off of top international riders from eight different countries. In the end, it was once again Ben Maher who led the victory gallop after completing the fastest clear jump-off round in 40.85 seconds aboard Urico. The pair finished over three seconds faster than second place finishers Laura Kraut and Nouvelle with a time of 44.09 seconds.

Nicola Philippaerts receives the Longines watch prize from Kalle Sternberg, Brand manager for Longines.

“I’ve almost no words for this, it’s unbelievable!” said the 20-year-old rider who was filled with excitement after an extraordinary performance that saw him pip three-time FEI World Cup Jumping champion Marcus Ehning from Germany by two-hundredths of a second while The Netherlands’ Maikel van der Vleuten slotted into third. Son of Belgian jumping star Ludo Philippaerts, and twin-brother of Olivier Philippaerts who also competes successfully at international level, Nicola was one of ten who made the cut into today’s jump-off against the clock. There were a few first-round surprises, but none bigger than that which saw Ludger Beerbaum lose his chance of clinching a place at the Final when pulling up Chiara after losing his right stirrup on the turn to the triple combination. He was five places off a qualifying spot going into the competition and seemed more than likely to collect enough points to make the cut. The Final won’t seem quite the same without the man who lies third on the current Longines World Rankings and who was the first German to clinch the FEI World Cup Jumping title when winning through with the great mare, Ratina Z, at Gothenburg in 1993. Ludo Philippaerts could be seen jumping up and down with excitement and pride at his son’s victory in such prestigious company. “Yes my father was pretty pleased all right, he was jumping nearly higher than me!” Philippaerts said afterwards.

CANAdA domiNATES FLoridA’S FuruSiyyA FEi NATioNS’ CuP March 1, 2014: The Canadian Show Jumping team comprised of Yann Candele, Tiffany Foster, Eric Lamaze and Ian Millar dominated a starting field of 12 countries to win the $75,000 Furusiyya Nations’ Cup, presented by G &C Farm, held Friday night, February 28, at the 2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. Canada finished the two-round competition with a total of eight faults, followed by Great Britain in second with nine faults and the United States in third with 12 faults. The win marked the sixth victory for Canada since the inception of the Nations’ Cup in Wellington in 2002. Canada led the way at the half-way mark, having posted a perfect score of zero faults thanks to clear rounds from reigning four-time Canadian Champion Candele riding Showgirl, ten-time Olympian Millar riding Dixson, and 2008 Olympic Champion Lamaze aboard Powerplay. The top eight countries returned for a second round of competition over the track set by 2008 Olympic co-course designer Steve Stephens. Canada pulled away from the pack when lead-off rider Candele posted a second clear round with

Purchased last fall by a group of owners committed to the success of the Canadian Show Jumping team, the pair is quickly proving itself to be deserving of their support. “We were in Barcelona at the (Furusiyya Nations’ Cup) Final last year and Eric was thinking already about the World Equestrian Games coming up and he looked at Showgirl and approached the owner about acquiring the mare for me,” explained Candele, 42, of Caledon, ON. “Eric is not selfish and he is all about the team. He put a group together of Canadian and American owners to be able to have that mare compete for Canada now under me.” Candele continued, “All the success of today is about Eric and his team spirit, and Ian and Tiffany were as solid as can be. In the first round he was a bit unsettled, and got a little bit rushed in a couple of places, but came back really well in the second round, and I was very happy with him.” Millar, 67, of Perth, ON, added only four

faults to the bottom line for Canada when the plank at fence 7b fell. He was aboard Dixson, an 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding owned by Susan and Ariel Grange that he has been riding for approximately one year. “Dixson is coming along extremely well,” noted Millar, who has his sights firmly set on the next cycle of World Equestrian Games, Pan American Games, and Olympic Games. “I’m very pleased with him tonight; his progress is great and we just need to get better and better. He’s the right age, and he has his whole future in front of him. I’m very proud to have him.” Having produced a fault-free effort in the first round riding Powerplay, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Artisan Farms LLC, such was Canada’s strength that Lamaze did not have to return for the second round. A score of eight faults had already won the title for Canada, and Lamaze could not have been prouder of his teammates. dressage report Adrienne Lyle and Wizard Earn First World Cup Qualifying Score with Freestyle Win March 6, 2014: Adrienne Lyle and Wizard brought enthusiastic energy to their Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night to claim the Palm Beach Dressage Derby trophy. It was the 31st anniversary of the Derby and the first time it was held at the Stadium at PBIEC as part of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Not only did they win the trophy with a 76.525 percent, their second highest score to date, but they also earned a qualifying score for the 2014 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Final. Lyle must earn one more qualifying score to be in the running to represent North America in Lyon, France, next month. The North American representation for the 2013 Reem Acra World Cup Dressage Final in Gothenburg, Sweden, included two Canadian riders, Jacqueline Brooks and Jamie Irwin, with no athletes from the USA.

“It would be wonderful to get the chance to go to the World Cup, but it is something I will have to thoroughly discuss with my coach, Debbie McDonald,” Lyle said, adding that if she earns the two qualifying scores then a decision will be made about competing in Lyon. “Everyone involved with Wizard’s care must make sure the timing and logistics are all doable while keeping Wizard’s best interests at the forefront.” Lyle said in the short time until the next competition, she will give Wizard a little down time to relax and then practice her freestyle a bit more. She said she had a chance to ride through her new choreography only once before performing it at the CDIO3* Nations Cup where she and Wizard Discipline Reports continued on page 44

o it’s beginning to feel a bit like spring in places! While we dodge the last snowflakes of winter, it’s time to start planning for the upcoming riding season. It should be a great year for the Eventers out there as we have a great competition schedule this year. For those of you who are thinking about trying our sport – we have some great opportunities for you as well, starting with our spring series clinics April 5 & 6th in Chilliwack at the Island 22 event site, and April 19-20th at the Johvale event site in Pritchard. Our Adult Rider Program continues to grow and planning is currently underway for the Adult Rider Camp at the Dot Ranch in Merritt on July 7-9th, 2014. Check out the Horse Trials BC website at www. horsetrialsbc.com. This year we have made a change to the Horse Trials BC temporary memberships, so if you are thinking of joining us at a clinic or an event, please ensure that you make yourself aware of the new limitations of the temporary memberships. This year, we are limiting the usage of temporary memberships to one per person, which can be used at either a clinic of your choice, or at an event, at the starter and preentry level only. For more information, please see our website. The temporary memberships are still only $25, and are available through the Horse Council BC website. If you are renewing your Horse Council BC membership, please remember

that you can renew your Horse Trials BC membership at the same time! Hope to see everyone out in May for our first Events of the year. We are very happy to have Mustang Powder Horse Trials in Chase offering an FEI competition in May this year. Come out and join us for some great competitions! For those of you who are planning on riding at the Preliminary level, please note that Horse Trials BC is working with the organizers who offer this level of competition to ensure that all scheduled Preliminary competitions avoid cancellation due to low numbers – so if you are planning on using a scheduled BC Preliminary competition as a qualifier – plan away! vex is a well-known name in safety wear in many other sports, most notably skiing, and they have now developed an equestrian helmet which has proven very popular in Germany where they are made. I recently had the opportunity to try one of the new Uvex helmets, and was impressed by several points, most notably the fit. If you have: a) spent a medium-sized fortune on a helmet only to find it bobs around after a good haircut, b) have difficulty fitting a ponytail under your helmet comfortably, or like to put your hair up underneath occasionally, or c) have a difficult-to-fit head, then this is definite-

ly a helmet you should check out. This helmet has five ways to adjust the fit, resulting in a hat that won’t move when bending over, even without the chinstrap done up! It is comfortable, light, and attractive, with this model having a bit of bling. A more traditional helmet is also available with the Perfexxion Active model. The interior lining can be removed and washed, and the helmet is light and airy to ride in. This is well worth a try if you are in the market for a new helmet. To find a store near you, visit canpro-horseequipment.com. This helmet was evaluated for fit and comfort only.

from Montreal, Canada, was a bit taxing on the horses, and she felt Rigaudon Tyme’s fitness was finally back up to par this weekend. “This weekend, he was already way more on the ball. It took us quite a while to come here from Montreal to Florida, and I think it took the [horses] a full four weeks to recover. I think they’re just getting in shape, so I think next year we might have to come four weeks earlier!” Strasser smiled. “This is exactly the music I want for such powerful horses. I have two big, powerful horses, so you need something that’s a bit more expressive.

The three-man side of Tommie Visser (Vingino), Laurens van Lieren (Ulysses La Haya) and Diederik van Silfhout (Arlando) pipped Belgium for the honours by almost a full five-point margin, while Sweden finished a close third

You can’t put light music on a powerful horse. It’s a lot of fun because he has this huge canter and it’s exciting to ride. It’s a lot of fun when you have a horse like that,” Strasser described. Strasser has brought Rigaudon Tyme along since he was a three-year-old. Strasser usually buys prospects around that age before bringing them up through the ranks, an experience she describes as occasionally stressful, but incredibly rewarding.

ahead of Germany in fourth place. The French fixture presented the second leg of the second pilot season for this team event which is proving a big winner with Dressage riders all around the globe. The first leg took place at Wellington in Florida (USA) just over a week ago with an historic victory for the host nation. And as the series continues to spread its wings, it is clear the battle for the 2014 title is going to be a big one. Riders from six nations — Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands and Russia — lined out and just 16 marks separated the first team from the last, as France slotted into fifth place ahead of Russia in sixth. Scores over 70 percent for both Visser and Van Lieren put the night’s result beyond doubt. Ground Jury members Jean-Michel Roudier from France, Australia’s Susan Hoevenaars, Poland’s Wojtek Markowski, Maria Colliander from Finland and Great Britain’s Isobel Wessels awarded 70.460 to Visser who competed after the first break in the class of 23 competitors.
