There aren’t too many Canadian equestrians who can lay claim to being veterans before reaching their 40th birthdays, but Langley, BC’s Hawley Bennett-Awad has found herself in just that position as she heads to Normandy. She and Gin & Juice (Ginny) are easily the most experienced pair on the Canadian Eventing Team. “How crazy is that!” says Hawley when asked how she feels about her position as a team veteran. “I’ve been on the team since 2003, which I think is pretty spectacular,” she says. “It’s an interesting situation to be in this time.” Hawley’s teammates are all former team mates from past Olympics, WEG and Pan Am Games, and Hawley believes there is strength in that shared experience. “Jessie and Selena are my really good friends, and I couldn’t ask for a better team mate than Peter,” she says. “I think it’s why it worked out so well in Kentucky four years ago. Working well together as a team paid off. I hope we will have the same results in France.” The results of the 2010 Canadian Eventing WEG Team are a tough act to follow: a team silver medal. The Canadian Eventing Team Selectors had a larger pool of horses and riders from which to choose in 2010, and Canada was able to take advantage of the option to send six horses and riders on the team and as individuals. Just four will travel to Normandy via Amsterdam and England this August (“planes, trains and automobiles” says Hawley), with no traveling reserves. Notably absent from the team are Equine Canada’s 2013 Horse and Rider of the Year, Rebecca Howard and Riddle Master (Rupert). With stellar results from last year that included 12th place finishes at both Badminton and Burghley, Rebecca and Rupert were among the more than 50 percent of the field at this year’s Badminton to fall victim to the Cross Country course. A much more difficult track than last year, combined with extremely poor conditions due to weather,
Karen Pavicic and Don Daiquiri
took its toll on many. “We were indeed victims of this year’s Badminton course,” said Rebecca in an online statement. “When we hit the back rail of an oxer early on course, Rupert sustained an injury that, in hindsight, is what caused our trouble later on course and resulted in our day ending at the Mirage Pond.” Disappointed not to be on the WEG Team, Rebecca has found the silver lining: Rupert’s prognosis for a full recovery. “This is, of course, the reality of the sport we are in,” she said. “I can only wish Team Canada the very best (bon chance!) in France this summer.” Hawley and Ginny will compete at the Rebecca Farm CCI in Montana before traveling to Europe in August. “I ran Ginny at Rebecca Farm before the last world championships, and she won it. It’s one of my absolute favourite events — a perfect test for us before WEG.” drEssagE — KarEn maKEs hEr WEg dEBut Canadian WEG Dressage Team: • Megan Lane (Collingwood, ON) — Caravella (13 year old Canadian-bred Dutch Warmblood mare), owned by Megan Lane; • David Marcus (Campbellville, ON) — Chrevi’s Capital (14 year old Danish Warmblood gelding), owned by Deborah Miculinic Kinzinger; • Karen pavicic (Surrey, BC) — Don Daiquiri (12 Countdown to Normandy continued on page 10

Making the 2014 WEG Team is the realization of a lifelong dream for Karen Pavicic. Having been the fourth team member (with Lionheart) on the 2007 Pan Am Games Team that won silver in Rio de Janeiro, she says this replaces the Pan Am experience as a new high point of her career. “I have been fortunate to have ridden and trained several good horses in my life, and each one is special for different reasons,” she says. “However, Don Daiquiri (Dono) is the horse of a lifetime for me, and I am truly grateful to have him in my life. Although he has his quirks and was quite challenging in his youth, he is beginning to blossom as a Grand Prix horse now.” Achieving the results that have qualified Karen to be on the WEG team has been a long road. “I’ve worked very hard and have sacrificed a lot (as has my family) to have accomplished this goal in 2014,” she says, “but it has been worth every moment, and I have enjoyed the process very much. I wouldn’t be here without the love and the support of my family and friends, and the many people who have helped me along the way.” Karen and Dono traveled to Europe in May with the help of a $20,000 C-DAAP (Canadian Dressage Athlete Assistance Program) grant. She and Dono competed successfully in France and Austria, and they will have one more outing at
the CDI Cappeln in Germany on the first weekend of August before joining their team mates at the team training camp in Aachen, Germany. Her two children, Katie and Niko, as well as husband David, will all be in France to share the experience with her. “I’m super excited to be going to Normandy to represent Canada, and especially the West Coast!” EnduranCE and rEining: morE of thE BEst from thE WEst Western Canada is well represented on both the WEG Endurance and Reining teams, which were announced in June. headlinenews Bit by Bit Canadian Eventing Committee Announcement July 8, 2014: It is with considerable regret that the Canadian Eventing Committee (CEC) announces the resignation of Graeme Thom as chair of Canadian Eventing High Performance Committee, and in addition, the position of chef d’équipe for the Canadian Eventing Team heading to the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, FRA, later this summer. “Graeme has been a considerable influence in the philosophy, direction and the organization of our High Performance Program, and he has managed the Canadian Eventing Team for five major Championships over the past nine years,” said the chair of the Canadian Eventing Committee, Peter Gray. “His attention to detail, foresight, expertise in budgets and logistics for Team training will make him very difficult to replace.” Gray will be acting as interim chair of the High Performance Committee and is working closely with Thom, who has offered his assistance over the next few weeks, to ensure the riders are provided with the best team management available.

CKY MOUNTAIN O R SHOW JUMPING
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE By Eleanor Klawer with John Anderson ecently, I had the pleasure of going to the Rocky Mountain Show Jumping facility in Calgary for the first time and what a pleasure it was. It was a hive of activity, not the least buzz of which was surrounding John Anderson, owner and master-ofmaking-things-happen at RMSJ. John, a frequent member of Canada’s Show Jumping team, grew up in the area just south of Spruce Meadows where his family has owned a huge tract of land for decades. Now John is developing Anderson Ranch into a premium show facility with a bit of a twist — he is developing it for all disciplines, and for all levels, for John hasn’t forgotten the grass roots of the sport. This man takes multitasking to a whole new level….and repeats mantras such as: “KEEP thE fun in sPort!” John hasn’t forgotten to make it fun as well. His ideas for interacting with audiences

at shows are entertaining and endlessly inventive (more on that in the next issue of Gaitpost magazine). Goby’s Grill, a beautiful log timber building on the show grounds, is integral to John’s plan. “People need a place to congregate, to meet, and socialize. There has to be somewhere to unwind and have some fun. It is where everything really starts.” Goby’s is a lovely pub, with great food, and certainly fills the bill when it comes to partying and meeting everyone — when looking for someone on the grounds, if they aren’t in the barn then they must be in Goby’s! “i lovE thE futurE” Partying aside, horses are big business at RMSJ. RMSJ was originally formed for the purpose of finding and developing quality show jumping horses to offer for sale to all levels of competition. Along with this original mandate, RMSJ has grown to include 20+ Show Jumping Tournaments in 2014, the

There are several new barns of permanent show stalls, soon to number near 500, and the whole property is linked by lovely trails and grass areas. A large derby field is being built on the south side of the property, possibly the largest in Western Canada, and will be open to hack or “flat” horses attending the shows. No more round and round a crowded warm-up ring for some outside time! The environment is to be as natural as possible for the horses, with a chance to enjoy some peace and tranquility. “thE City is right thErE!” The Royal West (Oct. 23 – Nov 4, 2014) is a huge and fantastic undertaking that John has been making a reality. When he heard that there would be a new Agrium building on Calgary’s Stampede Park, John knew it was a priceless opportunity to further the sport in Western Canada. It is a state of the art facility in the heart of Calgary, and the future home of the Royal West. Worthy of an article all its own, The Royal West features the CET National Medal Finals, Young 16

Horse Finals, the $50,000 Western Canadian Hunter Derby Finals, the Royal West Championships 1.10m – 1.45m, Western Canadian Talent Squad Finals, and over $450,000 in total prize money, including CSI3* Events. This show is a major boon to Western Canada’s equestrian sport. Put it in your calendar, October 23rd to November 1st, 2014, and be sure to attend. True to John’s mandate of inclusivity, there will be something for everyone and there will be no shortage of entertainment. It will be an incredible show, in all senses of the word, where many disciplines will be featured amongst some of the best Hunter and Jumper competition in Canada. Where else will kids and ponies be able to rub shoulders with their Grand Prix idols, and even compete in the same arena? The drive to Calgary is so much better than it was even a couple of years ago, and John hopes to attract horses and riders from all over and from all levels. Come for the competition and stay for the party! Do not miss this inaugural Royal West horse show. It is the beginning of another great Calgary tradition, so get in on it at the start. Check in to the Gaitpost in future editions to learn more about the Royal West…and the innovative ideas for the future that Rocky Mountain Show Jumping has for all of us.

the best of north american sport horse breeding to be showcased
W
ith breeding season wrapping up, horsemen and women are now turning their attention to the preparation of their best young horses for annual inspections. With that in mind, the KWPN-NA (Royal Dutch Warmblood Studbook in North America) recently announced dates and locations for the 2014 KWPN-NA Keuring Tour. A respected jury of Royal Dutch Sport Horse experts, including Lana Sneddon (IN) and Deborah P. Harrison, DVM (CA), will be joined by fellow judges Bart Henstra and Arie Hamoen of the Netherlands in a whirlwind tour of keurings at 13 different sites in the United States and Canada during the month of September. They will be looking for the “best of the best” from North American breeders as foals, yearlings, young horses, geldings, stallions and mares are evaluated for conformation, move-

ment, and potential talent for sport. “The keuring tour is very important for our breeders and for the studbook,” explained Willy Arts, Chairman of the KWPN-NA Board of Directors and long-time breeder with DG Bar Ranch in Hanford, CA. “The primary goals are ‘quality control’ for the breed here in North America as well as to educate both breeders and spectators.” Equine veterinarian, sport horse breeding judge, successful breeder and stallion owner Dr. Deborah Harrison of Lio Lomas Dutch Warmbloods in San Juan Bautista, CA, agreed with Arts. “These keurings give breeders an objective opinion of their horses and how they meet the Dutch system’s expectations and goals for their type of horse and sport direction,” said Harrison. “Our goal as judges is to evaluate, educate, and advise the participants at a keuring, imparting as much

information as we can. We advise them on what they may need to improve on, since as breeders their goal is always to improve the next generation. We see wonderful horses on this tour, and I always enjoy being part of the jury and I am happy to help breeders in any way I can to pursue their breeding goals.” Participation in last year’s KWPN-NA keurings increased markedly over previous tours, and both Sneddon and Arts expect the growth and support for the Royal Dutch Sport Horse to continue among North American breeders. “There’s no question KWPN horses are continuing to increase in popularity and are in high demand causing strong sales for breeders,” said Sneddon. “When sales are good breeders get excited about breeding and spend more time planning and researching breeding choices and aren’t stifled by a low budget, which in turn causes quality to improve.” Arts also expects the growth to continue, adding, “Quality is going up every year, and I contribute this to the strict selection system and Industry News continued on page 20

ism,” said Show Director Simon Brooks-Ward. “Every year, we endeavour to bring the very best horse men and women from around the world to London for this truly special occasion.” “Both the Ukrainian Cossacks and the Metropolitan Mounted Police have been real crowd pleasers in the past and are the perfect complement to Olympia’s world class competitions in Dressage, Show Jumping and Carriage Driving,” he continued. “It is very exciting to have such a phenomenal line up at Olympia once again.” Living up to its reputation as one of Europe’s premier indoor equestrian events, Olympia 2014 will once again host three FEI World Cups in Carriage Driving, Dressage and Show Jumping. The Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage leg takes place on December 16 and 17, the FEI World Cup Driving leg presented by Dodson & Horrell on December 19 and 20 and the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping leg presented by H&M on December 21. The climax of the seven day equine extravaganza will finish with the Olympia Grand Prix on Monday, December 22.

Now eternally dancing with the love of her life, George.

he waited just eighteen days to join him. Dianne was born in Shanghai, China on October 24th, 1932. Her father John Braidwood managed Lever Brother’s Far East Division, and they resided in the British sector. Dianne’s parents met in 1928 Warsaw Poland where 25 year old John was Lever Brother’s youngest plant manager. After the marriage John and Zofja (anglicized to Wenda) transferred to Shanghai. On leave to visit Poland in 1939, Dianne and family narrowly escaped the invading Germans. After a short stay in England living in the company town Port Sunlight, John decided to settle the family in Vancouver, renting a home 22

on Angus Drive while he returned to Shanghai. Dianne attended York House Elementary until a doctor suggested her health would improve in a drier climate. Wenda moved the family to the village of Naramata, just outside Penticton. They decided to build a holiday resort in Naramata on beach front property Wenda had judiciously purchased. Dianne attended Penticton High and graduated in 1951, reserving the first three dances on her dance card for Bud (George). Dianne and George married November 8th, 1952. Their wedding reception was the first for the Braidwood holiday resort: Sandy Beach Lodge.

For the next 25 years, Dianne fully supported, encouraged and prompted all George’s successes. At the same time she gave birth to Kathy on October 4th, 1953 — George’s birthday present. Dianne continued working as a bank teller supporting the family while George apprenticed and studied to become a CA. Stephen was born on August 4th, 1955. Then Jane came along 11 months later on July 21st, 1956, and Laura was born on March 2nd, 1964. Dianne retired from the bank to look after her family. Dianne missed the family-friendly, clean, fast food restaurant in Chicago called McDonald’s. Finally after much prompting, George agreed to approach McDonald’s for one franchise to keep Dianne happy. He came back with the rights to western Canada and an option for the rest if he could raise the funds. Once again, finances were tight. Four years and 32 stores later, George sold McDonald’s and Dianne built her dream home in Langley (after living for two years in a double wide trailer). They built a riding ring and everyone started riding competitively. Dianne bred and trained BC’s first homebred AQHA champion. As a real estate enticement, Dianne and George built Thunderbird Equestrian Centre in Langley while George also began his own restaurant chain: The Keg and Cleaver. Dianne’s business career began. She took over management of Thunderbird and ran the horse shows. Dianne was the Chamber of Commerce’s Businesswoman of the Year. When she was 65, the property was sold for development. Instead of retiring, Dianne proposed building another Show Facility from the ground up and doing it right. The result: Thunderbird Show Park now ranks number two in North America. Horse Council BC recognized Dianne’s accomplishments with a Lifetime Achievement Award. As well, she was inducted into Jump Canada’s Hall of Fame with a Builder’s Award. She spent her final years peacefully at home attended by her angel caretakers: Lena, Liberty and Myrna. Dianne is predeceased by her husband George, brothers-in-law Bill (Janet) and Larry, and sister Allison. She is deeply missed by www.gaitpost.com
her four children: Kathy (Mark), Stephen (Trish), Jane, and Laura (Brent). As well, she is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Laura Jane, Christine, George (Trisha), Jill (Max), Stephanie (Quinten), Scott, and Matthew. Three greatgrandchildren and another on the way will miss Nana: Rees, Logan, and Hugh. Dianne is fondly remembered by her sister-in-law Sara Lee, and brother-in-law Jim (Janan). She is also greatly missed by her first cousin Christine Billingham (Roger), Katie, and Fred in England. As well, Dianne is remembered by many nieces and nephews who loved summering in Naramata and family parties.

Lameness investigation: Not an easy task
D
ogmas are dangerous things. You tend to believe that problems are always the same and the manner in which we diagnose them never changes. When talking about lameness diagnosis, the dogma of nerve blocks is that they always give a definite answer as to the anatomical location of the lameness and that only one pathology exists. It is either black or white. It only makes sense, right? You freeze the area where the pain is coming from and your horse will feel like new and will move like a million bucks. But beware! Progress is devious enough to keep challenging us. As suspected by many of us for a long time, research is teaching us that nerve blocks often don’t do what they are supposed to do, and that, 26
august 2014
in itself brings a new dimensional complexity to the investigation of lameness. Also, many high performance horses present with several problems all at once, confounding the problem and making a final and accurate diagnosis time consuming, and at times frustrating and expensive. I am not sure if it is just me or that the lameness problems I see are getting more chronic, more complex and more subtle to detect. One could argue that the highly prevalent use of “other” methods to handle a lameness delays the proper professional attention needed to diagnose a problem, and by the time I see a problem, many times it is already chronic. And this in itself is a problem. Why? Chronic problems tend to induce compensa-

tory changes, not only physical but also psychological. The way a horse moves is the result of an interaction of mind and body. The physical problems are actually structural and have to do with differences in muscles, tendon receptors, and so on, but more importantly are in the processes that regulate motion. We know that horses like symmetry, and they will do everything in their power to reach it, even if that means, as it often does, adjusting the movement in the other extremities. We do the same thing! We like symmetry! What the body doesn’t know are the long-term consequences of doing so, such as the generation of other problems! Enter the realm of multi-leg lameness, where symmetry may be present to the untrained eye and the horse may seem to be moving fine. However, the performance is affected, because the horse can no longer do the same movements with the same degree of skill, or simply, the horse is tired of working through pain and says a crystal clear and loud NO! By using and developing our recently acquired gait analysis system, not a Lameness Locator, but what in my opinion is a more detailed gait analysis tool (I dislike the term “Lameness Locator” as it does not “locate” the specific origin of the lameness), I am learning to look at horses differently. I am learning to understand more deeply how they move and why they move in the way they do. It has been an interesting experience so far to see many horses through the eye of leg sensors with the invaluable input of our brains, and realize how many horses either have more than one problem or more than one leg af-
www.gaitpost.com
fected. This process takes time, effort, patience and finesse. This process needs your understanding and collaboration, as a thorough investigation may take several days. Sometimes repetition of the same tests for consistency is needed, as is an appropriate and consistent setting, such as suitable area to lunge the horse in soft and hard ground, which sometimes is only available through our hospital. If you want to avoid all of this, then prompt and early attention to a lameness by a qualified veterinarian, or regular soundness evaluations before and after competition, will allow you to attend to a problem earlier and will help to avoid further costs and headaches. And then, we still have the diagnostic imaging part, from the basic xrays and ultrasound, to the more advanced bone scan or MRI, but we will leave that for another day. The days where lameness diagnosis were one nerve block away are not gone, but sure enough they are not the most common for me these days. The dogma “one lameness one problem” is no longer valid. Dr. Antonio Cruz, a past tenured faculty member of the ontario Veterinary College and Western College of Veterinary Medicine, is the only Equine Board Certified Surgeon and Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist in British Columbia, and one of three in Canada. in addition, he holds several postgraduate degrees and an extensive academic career with over 30 peerreviewed publications, mostly in the area of equine orthopaedics, making him one of the best qualified individuals in his field. he is based out of Paton and Martin Veterinary Services in aldergrove where he runs a referral surgical service.

Rights & Responsibilities T
he previous Gaitpost articles (February, March, April) were primarily concerned with our EC coaching system and the changes that have occurred during the last decade. Tips on how to become certified and information on the evaluation process were included in those articles. This month, I would like to discuss the rights and responsibilities which a certified coach must be aware of while coaching at a competition. Coaches carry a huge responsibility on their shoulders. Above all, we as coaches hope to create ‘good citizens’. These ‘good citizens’ are not only good competitors, often striving for excellence, but also riders who respect the concept of
28
august 2014
fair play. Rules are in place to assist in this area. Rules are there to ensure a level playing field for all competitors and cover the protocol for riders/ athletes and officials. It is important that the rules are followed. Only then do we have ‘sport’. Occasionally at competitions there are concerns and sometimes even complaints. Sometimes they pertain to riders/athletes, sometimes horses and, at times, even officials. That is where the Rule Books help! Coaches need to be aware of rules in both the EC General Regulations and the rule book concerning the discipline in which they coach. If an injustice is observed — something
Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag
www.gaitpost.com
which is unfair, abusive or generally unbecoming to the equestrian sport — what should be done? It is always a good idea to go to the rule books yourself. Often this can be a great learning experience and can help to avoid unpleasant, and sometimes embarrassing, situations. But sometimes things need to be dealt with immediately. In this case, the Steward is the person who can help you with your concerns. The Steward is the person who is there to help, prevent and intervene. They are the ones who can often rectify the situation immediately. Usually, concerns need to be dealt with at the show — not at a later date. If the situation, for example, is alleged abuse towards a horse, then eye witnesses (who are not afraid to stand up for their beliefs) need to come forward at the time. Another example of a situation where the steward might need to be involved is ‘Unauthorized Assistance’. This occurs if an onlooker tells a Jumper rider that she forgot to go through the finish line or tells an Eventer to go faster. A caller in a Dressage test talking to the rider in the ring is also an example. There are very clear rules regarding outside assistance. Usually the penalty in this case is elimination. This makes for a fair and level playing field. Every competitor who is a member of EC is bound by the Code of Ethics, Statement of Principles and Code of Conduct. Every certified coach is also bound by the Coaching Code of Ethics. If there is a problem at a show, it needs to be rectified as soon as possible. There are ways of doing this — the first step is to go to the rule
books and the Steward. If, by some chance, the rule book does not address the issue, competitors, coaches, officials and all members of EC have the right and responsibility to change or make suggestions for rules. It is the right thing to do, and part of being a good citizen and member. It helps the sport, both short and long term. Now, getting back to the ‘good citizen’ concept. The right thing to do has been discussed above. Go directly to the Steward at the show with facts and proof of the situation. Counterproductive actions are many. Criticizing, doing nothing, going to the wrong person for help, or writing scathing emails and letters after the fact will not help the situation. Riders, horses, officials, parents, spectators and coaches will all make mistakes. For the good of the sport, take the right action! Since this article is directed towards coaches, in summary I would like to reiterate some important points. Teach your students how to act in a respectful manner at competitions. They will follow your lead — you are the role model. If something is wrong, use it as a ‘teachable moment’. Involve the student in correct procedure as to rectify the situation with the help of the most appropriate person. Make it a positive learning experience for your student (and maybe yourself!). Think of the big picture of our sport — the long term. Know the rules — it is your responsibility as coaches. Carry a rule book with you to shows and refer to it when necessary. In addition seek help from the show Steward.

I love finding the common thread of good horsemanship running through all the different disciplines, and this was no exception. This would be a wonderful experience for horses and owners of all levels and abilities, building respect and trust with the horse in a safe and patient manner. Our group was a broad mix of disciplines — Dressage, Hunter, Western, Pleasure —

Debbie was a very good coach, with good progression of the lessons, being positive and supportive of everyone. It was interesting to watch the other riders and horses as their confidence increased through the day. It was like the horses began to realize each obstacle was a game, a puzzle to be figured out, and they shed their preconceived attitudes about working with (or against) their moms. Bling has always been a supremely self-confident horse, and getting him to work with me instead of toying with me has been the challenge. The right balance of respect and trust is harder to find on some horses than others. Paddocks for the horses were separated from each other and in the shade, parking was Jay King and handsome Chico ample for bigger rigs, and on the suspension bridge, like pros. the course was completely fenced off for safety. A nice lunch was put on for us, and a Challenge was organized for the participants; our very own Andrea Beaulieu reigned supreme with the pretty Serena, winning the competition at the end of the day. I think I can speak for all of us when I say it was a fun day, playing with our horses, and we would like to thank Debbie and Laurie for a great time. I highly recommend this activity as a compliment to any discipline, and to anyone needing help handling their horse on the ground or in the saddle.

n June, I had the pleasure of attending the Performance Advantage Symposium in Calgary, Dressage Canada’s presentation of the best talent in support of high performance competition. The concept was first introduced as the Dressage Canada Florida Fortnight this past winter, in support of many of Canada’s top riders performing in Wellington, and it received such great reviews that Dressage Canada brought it home to Canada for those of us left up here. The first one was in Ontario, two weeks prior, and this one was preceding the Calgary CDI3* at the lovely Rocky Mountain Show Jumping facility. The symposium was organized by Christine Peters of Dressage Canada, and Desi Dillingham, MBE, Special Advisor (Dressage), was also present to inspire and encourage. Desi is building and leading a team of experts to design and implement programs for Canada’s current and future international Dressage stars. Dillingham 34

commented “The past few months I have truly enjoyed working with everyone I’ve met and have been impressed by their encouragement and support, and their firm belief that Canada has the raw talent necessary to make an impact on the world stage. We have a big job ahead of us but I’m confident with the right team of experts all pulling together, we can make a difference.” Desi’s strength appeared to me to be an extraordinary ability to make big goals seem achievable. With her energy and enthusiasm for the sport combined with her experience pulling British Dressage from the doldrums to the top of the world, Desi made it all seem possible. Canada just needs to believe in itself. Presenters included Christilot Boylen (demo and ride), Cara Witham ( FEI 5* judging insights), Dirk Stroda (Mental Performance coaching), Sandra Sokoloski (sport physiotherapist), Karen Nyrop (FEI veterinarian), and Dr. Chang

Dirk Stroda I have listened to a few sport psychologists over the years and Dirk was particularly impressive. His simplicity of progression was very effective, and he opened everyone’s eyes to how much one positive thought for the day can make a huge difference over time. It is hard to summarize such a powerful presentation and the effect it had on me and on the group as a whole. His exercises made a palpable difference to the atmosphere in the room, and a couple of simple points were possibly lifechangers. A must-attend if you ever have the chance…
Volunteers were wonderful at RMSJ! Where else do you get homebaked goodies at a clinic? equine canada
Cara Witham Cara gave a very interesting presentation on analyzing Dressage scores and choosing the movements that can make the most improvement in the score with, by focusing on them in training. These would be the marks with the most variability in scores, ie 4’s and 8’s. A movement consistently scoring 5’s is obviously something the horse struggles with at this time, and grinding at it is not likely to produce positive results. Choosing a movement that is capable of attaining 8’s and making it consistent will go a lot further toward increasing total scores. Cara showed a method of graphing all movements over all tests in a level that would be highly informative in training. Also keeping notes of Judges’ comments make sense for future reference, because they all have their own focus in judging. Cara also provided headset commentary of the CDI tests as they were being ridden the following weekend, and that was a great learning experience. Watching as tests developed exactly as Cara predicted, on training issues that arose early in the test and caused problems later, was hugely educational. Cara’s insight, experience, and humour were a special combination, no doubt.

Desi Dillingham
Dr. Karen Nyrop Dr. Karen Nyrop, an FEI veterinarian with Burwash Equine Services, had a wonderful combination of information and experience in her presentation regarding choosing and maintaining high performance horses. She was a very sensible, practical, and approachable clinician with a wealth of advice. Sandra Sokoloski As a physiotherapist that rides and treats many riders, Sandra had a really good take on what riders do to their bodies and their effect on their horses’ performance. Sandra has an equestrian rehabilitation programme practice focusing on analyzing movement patterns, correct posture, improving body awareness, and enhancing performance. A rider needs to take their body seriously to have any longevity in the sport, and Sandra had a very good method of analyzing riders and suggesting exercises specific to their issues. In June, Karolyi had produced a fault-free jump-off effort, only to have Judge eclipse his time by more than two seconds. This time, Karolyi left nothing to chance, laying it all on the table with another clear effort in a blistering fast time of 38.13 seconds. tant for Canada to have been invited to Aachen,” said Lamaze, who is a Rolex testimonee. “It is an honour for Canada to have a full team in Aachen and for us as riders to represent Canada in that arena. We have a strong team and for us to be competing with the greatest nations in the sport, together as a team, is great preparation for Canada for the World Equestrian Games. It is really nice to be part of a Nations’ Cup at a show in the league of Aachen’s stature, and to measure ourselves as a nation prior to going to the World Equestrian Games.” Canada has enjoyed great success to date in 2014, winning the Nations’ Cup events in Wellington, Florida, in February and Coapexpan, Mexico, in May. In June, Canada won the North American, Central American, and Caribbean League of the Furusiyya FEI Nations’ Cup to qualify for the b2,000,000 Furusiyya Nations’ Cup Final in Barcelona, Spain, from October 9 to 12. The Canadian Show Jumping Team will compete in Aachen, Germany, thanks in part to funding provided by Own The Podium. The Canadian Team will be led by chef d’equipe Mark Laskin and Team Manager Karen Hendry-Ouellette. Toronto’s Jordan MacPherson, 24, has declared JEM Stables Inc.’s Piccobello du Val de Geer, a 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare sired by Kannan. “Depth in our program is something we’ve really targeted and these developing tours help to address that need. I’m thrilled to have Jill back on our team. She’s such a quality rider, and we’ve missed her contributions,” said Jump Canada chef d’équipe, Mark Laskin. “The guidance and leadership she will provide to Lizzie, Jaclyn and Jordan on this tour will be invaluable. With three riders having the opportunity to wear the maple
leaf for the first time and two teams competing on consecutive weeks in Europe, it’s an exciting time for Canadian Show Jumping.” In addition to gaining valuable international experience competing in Europe, the team will take part in the Nations’ Cup competition at CSIO 3* - W Bratislavia, which will mark the inaugural appearances for Duff, Gingras and MacPherson at the senior team level. The three riders will be receiving their red Team Canada riding jackets from Frantisi Inc., a long-time sponsor of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. In addition to Laskin, this tour is supported by Team Manager, Karen Hendry-Ouellette and Stable Manager, Darren Roberts. A Nations’ Cup is the only competition in show jumping where riders, in teams of four, compete as a country. The top three scores from each team are counted towards the final result of the two-round competition.

The focus has been on Dressage over the past two days, with 15 riders from nine nations competing in Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and Freestyle to test all areas of the organization, including the field of play and training areas, footing, results and timing systems, as well as the back of house facilities, stabling, horse arrival and departure areas, and media services. “It’s a really fantastic stadium and the sports side is top-class”, FEI Dressage Director Trond Asmyr commented after two days of Dressage

competitions. “Of course as it’s a test event we will need to go through all the small details to be sure that if anything needs to be worked on or improved that it’s done, but the starting point is excellent and everyone is very much looking forward to coming back to Normandy in August.” Carl Hester, a member of Britain’s Olympic gold medal team at London 2012, acted as foreign rider representative for Dressage and also took top spot in the Grand Prix Special with Nip Tuck, reversing Monday’s Grand Prix placings with team mate Gareth Hughes (DV Stenkjers Nadonna). Hester was also impressed with the venue set-up. “It’s going to be brilliant,” he said. “It’s absolutely spot-on from a structural perspective. The footing is excellent and it will only improve for staying in place between now and the Games so that we can really ride to the maximum. It was definitely worth coming here and it should give the riders lots of confidence going into the Games.” Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein (DEN), who finished third on both days with Fabienne, was also complimentary about the venue and orga-

I’m very confident that things are going to work out well here.” As CEO of the Games Organizing Committee, Fabien Grobon is the man in overall charge of ensuring that everything is in place in time for the Games, and he too was pleased with the first two days of the final test event. “The two days went as expected, and even though we decided not to have spectators for the Dressage so that we could test other aspects, we had a great show for the horses. Now we need to stay focused for a lot more horses in the Jumping and a big crowd coming tomorrow when our goal is to welcome around 24,000 spectators to the venue. FEI Nations Cup Eventing: Germany back in the winning groove June 30, 2014: A powerful German team cruised to an easy victory in the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2014 held at Strzegom, the Polish venue which is still in celebratory mode after being awarded the 2017 FEI European Eventing Championships earlier this month. Sandra Auffarth’s Opgun Louvo, European team gold and individual silver medallist in 2011 and Olympic team gold medallist in 2012, is also back from a spell on the sidelines and finished second, and Dirk Schrade was third on his 2013 European team gold medallist, the delightful chestnut Hop And Skip. CONDOLENCES BCHJA again extends condolences to the Tidball family on the death of their matriarch, Dianne. Dianne was a strong supporter of the riding community in BC. Her determination and vision have helped turn Langley into the horse capital of BC. Her passion for excellence has turned her family’s Thunderbird Equestrian Centre into today’s internationally acclaimed Thunderbird Show Park. The BCHJA executive would like to acknowledge Dianne’s contribution in developing the fledgling BCHJA into the province wide organization it is today. She was a builder and her vision will be missed.
