dia production rights for the Games. Unfortunately CBC, who had the rights, didn’t see the need to air any of the Dressage (that we could find), and Equine Canada had its hands tied in making the effort to make the most of this huge opportunity to promote the sport. If I were a sponsor, I would be understandably angry that all the signage and branding that was paid for received not one minute of air time. Apparently the same will be true for the Eventing coverage, and that is shameful. Surely there is a way to ensure every sport gets recorded, even if through subcontractors, so that there is a record of the performances at the very least. Live stream it if the media moguls don’t believe there is an audience — at least the number of views can be recorded and perhaps result in later footage appearing on mainstream TV in the future should the numbers merit it. Imagine riding in the Pan Ams and for your country, and your family isn’t even allowed to video on their phones while there are no official options made available — ridiculous. Some official recording needs to be available so that fans get to watch and sponsors get their money’s worth. Stands were half empty due to an overabundance of “corporate allotments” (freebies) which were not utilized, and live media coverage

Oh Canada! Pan am Pride (and PuT down) As we go to press for this issue, Canada has just won the Team silver medal in Dressage at the Pan Am’s in Toronto, and Chris von Martels won the individual bronze medal in the Freestyle! (see page 40) Canada’s Dressage team pulled off personal bests, and fantastic scores. Chris von Martels was only .5% behind gold medal winner Steffen Peters! Steffen is a household name in the States, and considered one of the best in the world, and here Canada is hot on his heels! We need to be more vocal about our sport — if we don’t shout it out, no one will, and the public media will be apathetic at best. We followed the Games as best we could with the very limited coverage, as there was no live streaming due to me8

was non-existent. We can only imagine the number of Pony Clubbers that would have given their right arms to be there, screaming for Canada… I did see the silver medal in Dressage mentioned ONCE in the CBC ticker tape on the bottom of the screen… Thank goodness for Chef d’Equipe Alison Martin (of Vancouver BC) and Karen Robinson, blogger extraordinaire, for their exciting and informative posts, which helped make us all feel just a little bit connected to Toronto. Alison commented, “Being part of the team in your home country is so special; there is an amazing energy and vibrancy that you don’t get anywhere else. As a Canadian, you feel that the energy is all for you, and you feel extremely well supported.” Alison, you helped all of us tap into that energy — thanks so much. (Also, kudos to “The Hacker”, whoever you are, who posted video of all the Canadian riders’ tests — we love you! Naughty, and likely illegal, but greatly appreciated by Dressage fans everywhere…) Show Jumping and Eventing are taking place in Toronto after we go to press for this issue, so we will report those results on line at Gaitpost. com as they happen, and have the stories and photos in the September issue of Gaitpost. Eric Lamaze, Ian Millar, Tiffany Foster, and Yann Candele comprise the Show Jumping team, and Eric Lamaze, who had several horses to choose from, has selected Coco Bongo, owned by Artisan Farms LLC, as his mount for the 2015 Pan American Games. The Canadian Eventing team will consist of Jessica Phoenix, Colleen Loach, Waylon Roberts, and Kathryn Robinson. The Eventing portion of the Games gets underway with the Dressage phase on July 17 at the OLG Caledon

Pan Am Equestrian Park in Caledon, ON. CrossCountry will follow on July 18 at the Pan Am Cross-Country Centre in Mono, ON, with competitors returning to Caledon on July 19 for the final jumping phase. Toronto Trivia Approximately 6,135 athletes from 41 nations will compete in 36 sports at this 17th edition of the event which runs from July 10 to 26. And a record 45% of competitors are expected to be female, the most ever for any multi-sport event. The Games will also be the largest multisport event ever held in Canada, with double the number of athletes that competed in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Foaling Frenzy We at the Gaitpost have been overwhelmed by the response to our request for photos for our Foal Feature this month. Thank you, everyone, for sending in your baby pics for all of us to enjoy. than Connaisseur, owned by Sara Pocock of Langley, BC, and Rafalca caught on the first breeding — not bad for an 18 year old maiden mare! Connaisseur, a 2007 Imported Hanoverian Stallion (Con Amore x Donnerhall) placed third in the Pavo Cup in 2011, and moved to Canada in late 2012. All those Connaisseur baby-cousins out there will be keeping an eye out next spring for that special delivery! Adios, Antonio! On July 8th, many friends and colleagues got together at Paton and Martin Vet Services Equine Clinic to say goodbye to Dr. Antonio Cruz. We are all very sorry to see such a superb surgeon and caring veterinarian leave the Lower Mainland, but Antonio and his family are moving back to Europe. Antonio did promise to send the Gaitpost “News from the Dark Side”, (his words, not ours!) and give us reports on what he is up to in the horse world in Europe, which will be an interesting perspective, no doubt. We wish Dr. Cruz all the best of everything in this big move…. Aw, shucks…. Earlier this year, the Gaitpost entered the American Horse Publications Association’s 2015 competition for Awards Promoting Excellence in Equine Media. Our August 2014 cover placed third in a big class, (see page 18), and in the General Excellence category, the Gaitpost received the following comment: “This little publication does a big job of making the most of its real estate. The covers are clean and engaging yet carry as much information as some larger-format magazines. The use of an added colour on the Contents page draws attention and makes it pop. In most cases, photos were well chosen for being able to work the small spaces. The event coverage included some highly entertaining writing and some personable first-person accounts.” While we didn’t place in that category, we are very proud of how we did for our first time, and have big plans to come back in 2016 and take on the “big guys”! headlinenews Bit by Bit The Alberta Wish Ride July 7, 2015: The Alberta Wish Ride heads to Alberta’s corn capital, Taber, to kick off the 7th year of the event which supports the Children’s Wish Foundation. In its 7 years, the event has been held at six different locations. Those locations are determined by the local volunteer committee organizing the event and it also exposes the event and the cause to a wide range of Alberta’s population. This is the first year for the event in Taber, which will be August 22nd. For the fourth year the ride will also be heading out from the Historic Reesor Ranch in Cypress Hills on September 12th. “We’re very grateful for the local teams which have organized these events,” said Alberta Wish Ride Chair Irene White. “They’ve been working hard to put the events together and finding local sponsors who help defray our costs.” White said the ride puts on a first class experience for the riders and, wherever possible, the looks to donations and sponsors to offset costs so the maximum amount of funds raised can go directly to the Wish Foun-

dation. The ride has very little overhead and in the past six years has donated over $200,000 to the foundation. All details regarding the rides including registration and pledge forms are available at albertawishride.ca. BC’s Bill Ulmer Wins Second Consecutive Bonus from SSG Gloves Bill Ulmer claimed his second SSG Gloves bonus in a row while local rider Andrea Strain also cashed in during the SSG Gloves “Go Clean for the Green” promotion held June 24 to 28 at the Thunderbird Show Park ‘West Coast Classic’ in Langley, BC. Having claimed a $1,000 bonus from SSG Gloves following the $3,000 Dexter Associates Realty Canadian Hunter Derby on Saturday, May 30, Ulmer returned to the grass derby field to capture his second straight victory in the SSG Gloves promotion by winning the $5,000 Cobblestone Hunter Derby. Ulmer topped a 43-horse starting field to take the win riding Beach Drive, a 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Ulmer’s wife, Susan Lund, for the past four years. tion to his loyalty to the Canadian glove manufacturer. That brings his total bonus money won to $2,000 so far this season. Andrea Strain of Langley, BC, took top spot in the $15,000 Kubota Canada Grand Prix. Strain emerged victorious riding Djakarta, her 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare. For wearing SSG ‘Digital’ riding gloves on her way to victory, Strain was also presented with a $1,000 bonus from SSG Gloves. Final Eligibility Decision for Individual Dressage Final at TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games July 14, 2015: A final decision was reached on the number of riders per country for Sunday’s Individual Dressage Final and a new start list has been made following a draw. The competitions at the Pan-American Games are staged under Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) rules, but the FEI decides on the sports format and this year introduced a new concept with the combination of Small Tour and Big Tour. Based on the Technical Handbook, it was announced at a meeting of chefs d’equipe on July 12th

that four qualified riders from each country would be eligible to go through to the Individual Final and the draw was then made for the Individual Final (Freestyle), including four riders from both the United States of America and Canada. No protest was lodged within the 30 minute deadline after that meeting, and an attempt to lodge a protest after the deadline was rejected by the Ground Jury. However, at a chefs d’equipe meeting on July 13th, it was announced that according to the PASO rules, a maximum of three riders per country would be eligible to go through to the Individual Final. The chefs d’equipe present at the meeting unanimously agreed to ask PASO for an exception so that four riders could participate, and that the two riders that would lose their places could start in the Individual Final as extra riders. Later in the day, two nations — Venezuela and Mexico — stated that they had changed their minds. When PASO was informed that there were two countries that were no longer in agreement with the original vote, PASO said it would not agree to an exception in these circumstances. This resulted in a re-draw, dropping Canada and USA’s fourth riders.

At The Back Gate

with Caroline Holmberg by Jessica Lefroy

O

riginally from Gothenburg, Sweden, Caroline Holmberg got a relatively late start in the industry, not picking up riding until the age of twelve at a local riding school. Though she competed up to the 1.30 level, she never had ambitions to pursue a career from the saddle, instead focusing her attention on a career as a professional groom. While still in school she began helping a friend by attending international shows on the weekends, in the process making contacts within the industry. She was soon offered a job in Germany and after graduating high school at the age of 18, left home to begin her career. Stints with Marcus Ehning and Rodrigo Pessoa eventually led to a position with Tiffany Foster in 2011. Along with two other grooms, Caroline is responsible for all of Foster’s show horses and travels to competitions such as the Global Champions Tour events, at Spruce Meadows, and the Winter Equestrian Festival. Among her charges is Tripple X III, affectionately known as Hugo in the barn. The stallion is described by Caroline as a “big but gentle horse who loves to snuggle,” and together the pair have criss-crossed the globe. “I love all the horses, but Hugo is very special to me,” she says. “I spend more time with him than anyone else in my life. He really shows you that he likes you and is always happy to get all my attention. He loves to work and always tries his hardest in the ring.” Another familiar face in her string is Victor, whom she says is a real sweetheart but can 14

be grumpy at times. “Victor is also very brave; he used to be a carriage horse when he was young, so nothing scares him.” Southwind VDL, or Boy is the oldest of the group at 17 years of age. “Boy is extremely kind and a little bit shy. He has a huge heart, and is a real fighter. He always puts his head on my shoulder when we hand walk.” As a team, Foster’s group have amassed their fair share of victories, but Caroline is quick to pinpoint one of her favourite moments. “Winning the Nation’s Cup with the Canadian team at Spruce Meadows in 2014 was definitely a proud moment for me,” she says, “but anytime your horse and rider win or do well in the ring it makes you proud. We all work so hard towards it, and it’s a great feeling when it pays off.” To ensure that the horses are in the best possible condition both of mind and body is Caroline’s most important task, and knowing the horses in her care and being aware of their eccentricities is of utmost importance. “Horses competing at this level of the sport require extensive care,” she explains. “They usually haven’t made it this far unless they are sensitive and particular in their wants and needs. The rider obviously has to know their horses well, but I think as their groom I get to spend so much time with them that I get to know them extremely well. Knowing all their quirks, likes, and dislikes allows me to make sure they are happy and healthy every time

Back Gate continued from page 14 we go into the ring. The only real trick to keeping them happy is getting to know them so well that they are never aggravated or upset when it comes to traveling, in the barn, or when it’s time for them to perform. Caroline loves to use the Vetrolin products, especially the shampoo and liniment, and also swears by many of the Exhibitor Brand products; she admits to not being able to braid without Quic Braid. Holmberg’s after-class routine varies very little from horse to horse. There is always a bath, then regular ice boots on all four legs during the time it takes them to dry off. Some horses get a magnetic blanket after they show, some before, and sometimes even both depending on the horse. Feet are packed with Epsom Salt Poultice, and she uses Traumeel gel and Tendonil gel on the legs with regular standing bandages over top. For the bigger classes, or sensitive horses, she will use frozen zinc bandages underneath the standing wraps. Regular work from the chiropractor and acupuncturist is 16

performed every three weeks or so. Caroline spends the winter months in Wellington, Florida, which she says feels like a second home, but is primarily based out of the farm in Antwerp, Belgium. One of the biggest benefits to life as a groom can be the travel, but living out of a suitcase can also be trying. “Sometimes I don’t even have time to do my laundry before I hit the road again,” laughs Caroline, “but, it becomes a routine and you just make it work. That’s why it’s very important to have a good team at home to back you up and get the next team of horses ready to get on the road with preparation when I am short of time in-between travels. I definitely enjoy a week at home once in a while even though it doesn’t happen very often! Most of my closest friends are doing the same job as me, so it has kind of become my extended family.” Holmberg’s dream of a career with horses has taken her around the globe and into the stables of the world’s top riders. Though demanding in its expectations, it is a life that she believes is rewarding for many reasons. “I love my job because I get to spend every day doing something that I love and that I’m good at. I also love the feeling that through my hard work I’m contributing to Tiffany’s success and career. I’m lucky enough to work for and with great people so that definitely makes it even more enjoyable. I was young, the Gothenburg Horse Show used to host the jumping World Cup Final every year, and I would always hang around for hours after the show had ended on Sunday night to watch the international grooms pack their trucks and load up their horses, thinking that one day I wanted to be like them. That was 15 years ago; every day is different with horses, and there are of course ups-and-downs as there are in any other job, but overall it’s a great way to live and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

Gaitpost Magazine Receives American Horse Publications Award AHP Members Honoured for Excellence in Equine Publishing Media.

M

embers of American Horse Publications claimed 192 honours on Saturday, June 20 as the long-anticipated results of the AHP Annual Awards Contest for material published in 2014 were announced. This year’s competition was judged by 27 professionals and included over 60 classes, 837 entries, and 115 contestants, of which 72 were finalists. Looking at stats from another angle, 60 first place plaques were awarded, over 300 certificates were presented, and 405 slides were shown at the awards presentation held on closing night of the “Tally-Ho at the Alamo” Seminar. Attendees experienced a jammedpacked three-day educational and networking

conference held at the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, on June 18-20, 2015. AHP members came from all over the United States and Canada to applaud this year’s winners and enjoy a final night with friends, old and new. A reception co-sponsored by Dover Saddlery and i-5 Publishing, publishers of Horse Illustrated, Young Rider and HorseChannel.com, preceded the Awards Banquet sponsored by Zoetis. Breyer Animal Creations provided their 65th Anniversary Edition of Glitterati as a centerpiece which one lucky attendee at each table took home. The General Excellence Award is a coveted honour for print publications and this year’s recipients included Paint Horse Journal, in the Association Publication circulation under 15,000 class, The American Quarter Horse Journal in Association Publication circulation 15,000 and over class, Equine Journal in the category for State or Regional Publication, Driving Digest in the SelfSupported Publication circulation under 15,000 class, and EQUUS in the Self-Supported Publication with circulation 15,000 and over category. All winners in the five General Excellence classes were eligible for the Overall Publication Award judged by a separate judge. The prestigious award was presented to Driving Digest, a bimonthly publication on driving for every equine. Gaitpost magazine received third place for their August 2014 cover design, with the judge commenting, “I love this cover. The foal gallops into the picture. The dandelions dot the field in the background creating a lyric quality to the piece. The title ‘Foals’ is drawn in a rhythmic script. The purple of the masthead is a perfect counterpoint to the colours in the rest of the composition.” Congratulations and credit to Gaitpost’s Art Director, Linda Horn, and photogra-

Canadian Dressage Athlete Assistance Program Supports Riders for 2016 Olympics Canada’s Dressage talent is highly competitive, and the country’s top Dressage riders are known for their international successes. Canadian high-level Dressage athletes put 100 percent of their efforts into improving their skills and scores and developing winning relationships with their horses. The riders themselves aren’t the only ones who are so dedicated to Canadian Dressage that they give their all to make it successful — the Canadian Dressage Athlete Assistance Program (C-DAAP) also gives 100 percent of its net proceeds from all fundraising events to riders. The organization is completely dedicated to raising funds to help Canada’s Dressage athletes offset the costs of training and competing. In just the past two years, over $130,000 was awarded to riders with another $80,000 planned

to be given this summer. With the help of CDAAP, Canadian Dressage is quickly taking a stand as a formidable global competitor as all four of its 2015 Pan American Games Dressage Team members have received support from CDAAP in the past. The Canadian Dressage Athlete Assistance Program Advisory Council was recently formed to assist in setting criteria for recipients and dispersing the funds. The Council includes highly respected members of the Dressage community, such as Nancy MacLachlan, David Marcus, Nancy Olson, Chris Von Martels, and Victoria Winter, with Deborah Kinzinger Miculinic serving as the chair of the committee. Miculinic is the owner of two of the Grand Prix horses that David Marcus rides, including Chrevi’s Capital, Marcus’ mount in the 2012 London Olympic Games. “My vision of developing C-DAAP into a national program and providing hardworking Canadian Dressage riders with the financial support that they need to make it to the top of their sport is finally coming together,” Miculinic said.

EIA: Everyone Needs To Start Paying Attention

E

quine Infectious Anemia (EIA) or more commonly known by its lab test as “Coggins” is a serious disease that for many years has flown way under our radar. The incidence in Canada is low, however almost all of the positive cases are in Western Canada. The rate of infection in the tested population is around 0.2%, although this can be deceiving as the rate is much higher in certain geographical areas where the horses are not generally tested. There are certain areas in Western Canada where disease remains highly prevalent (endemic). There are three forms of the disease. Acute refers to the clinical signs after infection and can 22

August 2015

vary from a mild fever, anemia, abortion, to rapid death. The chronic forms are generally found in recovered horses but can have intermittent relapses, while the inapparent forms are infected horses who are not showing any clinical signs. These horses when stressed can develop clinical disease. In general, but not always, healthy carrier horses are not carrying a high viral load hence represent a reduced chance of spreading the virus. Sick horses with a high virus load can be very contagious. Infected horses remain infected for life; there is no treatment and no vaccine. The disease is spread through infected blood by biting insects such as horse and deer flies. Equally

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

www.gaitpost.com

important is the spread by blood transferred through contaminated needles. The disease is federally reportable and positive horses must be euthanized or kept in an insect-free quarantine at least 200 meters from any horse. Once a positive horse is identified, the CFIA takes control and implements testing and control programs. The premises where the horse was located will be quarantined for 30 – 45 days and a 30 day trace-back of all contact horses will be implemented. So why would a disease of low incidence not normally identified in our recreational/show horse population warrant such special attention in this article? Well I want you to re-read the last sentence in the previous paragraph — the property where the horse was tested will be QUARANTINED. Let that sink in…QUARANTINED! In June of this year, a scenario unfolded which brought this disease into clear focus for horse owners. In general, the situation was as follows. At a large public show stable on Vancouver Island, a pony which had been on the premises for over six years, and who had attended many local and large BC horse shows, tested positive prior to being shipped to the USA. The horse had been purchased from a show stable in the interior of BC. It is suspected that the horse became infected prior to moving to the island. As a consequence the infected pony was euthanized and the show stable was quarantined. All in-contact horses including those recently moved from the property were tested. At one point there was discussion of a large horse show being quarantined and all horses tested, because two in-contact horses from this stable had been moved to the show prior to the positive testing. So what does this scenario tell us? It points out how easily it is for an infected equine to find its way into the midst of our horse population. Although the risk of transmission of this disease

from the healthy infected pony was small, the potential is real and must be seriously considered. The show season for this stable was over! The loss of this great pony was significant but the economic implications were huge. Consider the effect on your personal recreation plans, show season or horse business if this had been you facing this situation. In a previous article I talked of BIOSECURITY. Testing for EIA (Coggins Test) is a very simple, straightforward and relatively inexpensive biosecurity protocol. I think that the take home message of this article is that the presence of this disease on your premises has serious emotional and economic consequences. It seems that it makes abundant sense that all stable owners, large or small, show facility management, rodeo committees etc. anywhere in Western Canada should implement a mandatory testing protocol prior to any horse (equine) entering the premises. It makes equal sense that horses prior to purchase should be tested. Who would want to inherit this sort of a problem! This would go a long way to reduce the potential for a positive horse causing the huge emotional and economic impact of having a positive horse identified at your stable, farm or equestrian event.

“The premises where the horse was tested will be QUARANTINED. Let that sink in…QUARANTINED!”

he Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), world governing body of equestrian sport, has launched the FEI Awards 2015 to celebrate the world’s exceptional equestrians. The annual salute to excellence, courage, commitment and dedication has started with nominations open at www.feiawards.org. “Our sport is unique and extraordinary,” FEI

President Ingmar De Vos said. “Our athletes and everyone working in the equestrian community have amazing track records of success, incredible personalities and fascinating back stories. Time and time again as spectators and on television we see sensational victories, but there is so much more to our sport than meets the eye. “These awards honour everyone who makes our sport happen, highlighting the true value of horse sport and its contribution to our global society. HRH Princess Haya created these important awards and I am proud to continue this tradition, which is now part of our community.” The Longines Rising Star Award — won last year by Lambert Leclezio, who at just 17 became the first athlete to represent Mauritius at a World Championship when he stepped into the Vaulting arena at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 — is for equestrians aged 14 to 21 who demonstrate outstanding sporting talent and commitment. The Reem Acra Best Athlete — awarded to Dutch jumping legend Jeroen Dubbeldam, who

scored individual and team gold at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 and helped the Netherlands clinch the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Final just weeks later — celebrates the athlete who over the last 12 months has demonstrated exceptional skills in the arena, and has taken equestrian sport to a new level. The Against All Odds Award acknowledges people who have pursued their equestrian ambitions despite physical issues or extremely difficult personal circumstances. Last year this award went to Para-Equestrian Dressage athlete Sydney Collier (USA) with her service dog Journey. The Best Groom Award — won last year by Jackie Potts (GBR) who has spent over 20 years as groom and right-hand woman in the stables of world Eventing number one William Fox-Pitt (GBR) — is dedicated to the vital behind-the-scenes team members who work 24/7 to ensure their horses get the best possible care and attention. The FEI Solidarity Award — which went to equine therapy centre Equal Ark (SIN) last year — will be presented to an FEI Solidarity or equestrian development project, or an individual or organization that has demonstrated skill, dedication and energy in expanding equestrian sport. Nominations for the FEI Awards 2015 will close at midnight on August 28th, 2015. The winners of the awards will be flown to the glittering FEI Awards Gala presented by Longines in Puerto Rico’s capital San Juan, where over 350 guests from the global equestrian community, including representatives from the FEI’s National Federations around the world, will celebrate their triumphs.

The FEI Tribunal has also issued its Final Decision in the case involving Gillese De Villiers (RSA) and the horse Tra Flama at the Endurance competition of the FEI World Equestrian Games 2014, following a positive finding for a Controlled Medication Substance. Samples taken on August 28th, 2014 from the horse returned positive for the Controlled Medication substance Phenylbutazone and its metabolite Oxyphenbutazone. Phenylbutazone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory used for the treatment of pain. Tra Flama was vetted out at the second Vet Gate on the Endurance course. has 30 days from the date of notification to appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Separately, the CAS has upheld the FEI’s principle of strict liability in the application of the EADCMRs in an appeal lodged by HH Sheikh Hazza Bin Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan (UAE) against the FEI Tribunal ruling of April 7th, 2014, but has reduced the period of suspension for the athlete from 27 to 18 months. The horse Glenmorgan, which HH Sheikh Hazza rode to win the CEI3* in Al Wathba (UAE) on February 11th, 2012, tested positive for Propoxyphene and its metabolite Norpropoxyphene. Propoxyphene, which is an opiate analgesic, is classified as a Banned Substance under the FEI’s EADCMRs. As the rider and therefore the Person Responsible, HH Sheikh Hazza was immediately suspended from March 12th, 2012, the date on which he was notified by the FEI of the positive case. A two-month provisional suspension was imposed on the horse from the same date. HH Sheikh Hazza conducted extensive inves-

tigations to establish the source of the Propoxyphene between mid June 2012 and late February 2014. In its Final Decision, the FEI Tribunal imposed a 27-month suspension, taking into account a previous rule violation by Sheikh Hazza in early 2005. Sheikh Hazza lodged an appeal with the CAS against the findings on May 6th, 2014. The CAS rejected the athlete’s argument that making the rider the Person Responsible (PR) for the horse is an unnecessary and/or disproportionate interference with fundamental rights, and so unlawful and therefore outside the powers of the FEI. The CAS accepted the FEI’s argument that the PR and strict liability provisions simply mean that if the horse has a prohibited substance in its system, the athlete’s results with the horse are automatically disqualified and the athlete will be banned unless he/she can show that the substance got into the horse’s system through no fault or negligence of the athlete. The CAS took into account that systems had FEI News continued on page 30

The Ride Across Canada

Leadership to Relationship

by Terry Nichols

I

have been fascinated by the herd dynamics of horses for many years. I love to watch as they move each other around a pasture in order to determine the pecking order. Horses have a need to know where they stand in the herd. There is a process to determine which number slot each horse will take in that pecking order, and only once that is established can there be peace. I have also witnessed many leadership styles in a herd of horses. I have seen insecure horses 28

August 2015

lead a herd, but because of their lack of belief in themselves, they can only get the others to follow with an overaggressive nature. There is a lot of biting and kicking and running around in this herd. Not as much sharing of feed piles and reciprocated grooming. I have seen leaders that were so respected in the herd that just their very presence commanded attention and the horses around didn’t question…only followed. They could eat with, groom with, and interact

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

www.gaitpost.com

with the other herd members, but when the time came that the herd needed direction, this was the horse that the horses followed. I love to watch this leader confidently walk to the feed and the other horses move aside to let them pass. It is interesting to watch horses compete for leadership. Moving each other, pushing space, biting and kicking and running if necessary, and once it is determined which horse is the leader, the show can stop and peace can return. I have seen a bear at the edge of our pasture and the lead horse kept grazing calmly, the other horses grazing as well. That horse decides if the bear is a threat or not, and the herd checks in to see what they should do. Paul, my husband, and I have had many conversations about the similarities of a herd of horses and a group of soldiers. What horses deem to be good leadership qualities and what troops consider good leadership qualities are very similar. If we are to be good leaders for our horses, what does that look like? We have come up with some ideas that make good leaders for horses and for soldiers. And now for the Ride Across Canada, for soldiers to be good leaders for their horse partners. GOOd LEAdErshiP FOr hOrsEs And sOLdiErs is: • Having a plan and following through with the plan. • Communicating your plan clearly. • Looking ahead. • Rewarding effort. • Being assertive when necessary in order to be clear. • Not micromanaging a competent team member. • Having trust. • Helping to prepare for change in the plan. I am the instructor for the veterans who join The Ride Across Canada. These men and women join me for a few hours to learn the skills they will need to join Paul on horseback for their leg of this ride. It has been an honour and privilege to teach, and I am enjoying finding ways to help military connect with horses. I get the veterans www.gaitpost.com

to hold the reins like they are holding mugs of beer…They don’t forget that! We use the “Cautionary word of command” to get ready for a change like a turn or a stop. AND whoa…AND turn…AND walk on…some preparation for the horses, the same as marching troops on a parade square. “The last order stands”…If I ask a horse to stop, they should stay stopped until they are asked something different. They should maintain the gait that the rider asks for until they are asked for a different gait. Some horses and troops that question leadership may not follow the command, and it is up to the leader to get them back on track so the plan can be accomplished. If the leader can follow through and accomplish the mission, there is peace in the herd, and much respect is gained. Now for the other piece that I see where horses are our partners but appreciate the gentle sides of their leaders…not as common of an approach in the military leadership that I have seen, but it is useful with horses and is useful when communicating with civilians. I describe riding like dancing. Being sensitive to your partner. I use words like, “soft”, “flowing”, “connected”, and “aware”. I witness the softer sides of our veterans when this comes together in their riding. When the minds become connected and the bodies move easier together…dancing. Our effectiveness increases as a leader when we include sensitivity and awareness of our partner, when we ask nicely first before we escalate, when we notice how they are doing, and when we treat every horse differently and adapt ourselves to their needs. I believe the horses appreciate the effort, and it is my goal that I can be what my horses need…only then will I be a truly respected leader and partner. I see horses bringing the military culture and civilian culture together. Creating a place for effective leadership, respect, and sensitivity…the perfect combination. Thanks to our horses for giving us these opportunities for growth and understanding and friendship. They are such powerful teachers, healers and partners. communities for Veterans Foundation, The Ride Across canada www.communitiesforveterans.com

elcome to the 2015 Foal Feature. We have such a lovely collection of foals this year — congratulations to all the breeders, and thank you very much for sending us your photos — all breeds, all sizes, all irresistibly adorable. There is a horse out there for everyone, and we must give thanks to the people that breed our future partners, for there is rarely a profit in the venture, although much pleasure. It is pretty much a given that anyone reading the Gaitpost is a horse lover. We all feel the pull that these animals have on us, and that pull is multiplied tenfold by a cute foal. Why is this? All babies are cute, and we react instinctively to protect them. But breeding is an expensive, labourintensive, and often heartbreaking venture. It is a gamble, tossing the gene pools in the air and seeing what lands. I long ago gave up the notion of breeding for profit — now that was a dream! The return on a good foal was usually offset by the expenses of another foal’s mishaps or mistakes. I now breed for myself, and have had the best experiences as a result. I breed because of the pleasure in watching the mares and foals in my field. I breed because it brings an excitement and revitalization to

my barn. I breed because I am an optimist, and I love envisioning the futures the babies in my barn will have. I love riding a homebred. They are blank slates that are completely my responsibility. Look at these photos of my friends in my field, and I don’t need to explain any further. This is why I breed.

erman Riding Ponies are known as a small warmblood because they move like a large warmblood but in a small package. They have been bred in Germany for over 40 years for children because of the trainability, rideability, athleticism, and amazing temperament to compete in Dressage, Eventing, and Jumping. They have become increasingly popular for small adults as well as children, as these ponies can be just as competitive in the show ring as large horses My journey with German Riding Ponies started five years ago after seeing them competing in the Dressage Ring in the Lower Mainland of BC. Being a small adult, I knew then that was what I wanted to own and ride. After two years of researching the breed, we travelled to Florida where I purchased a nine month old German

Throughout these five years of owning a German Riding Pony, my love of the breed lead me to follow the Dressage career of the 2012 Bundeschampion Westfalen Pony stallion Golden State, owned by Melissa Mulchahey, who imported him from Germany to California last year. This palomino stallion has amazing movement and temperament, and recently won the 2014 USDF First Level Dressage Horse of the Year. Canadian Dressage Team Claims Silver Medal at Pan American Games

F

ollowing a hard fought battle with the United States, the Canadian Dressage Team claimed the silver medal on Sunday, July 12, at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. Dressage competition is taking place July 11, 12, and 14 at the OLG Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park in Caledon, ON. Brittany Fraser of New Glasgow, NS, Megan Lane of Collingwood, ON, Belinda Trussell of Stouffville, ON, and Chris von Martels of Ridgetown, ON, earned the team silver medal for Canada in front of a home crowd. With a final score of 460.506 points, the United States claimed the gold medal — and the only qualifying spot available for the 2016 Rio Olympics — 38

over Canada with 454.938. Brazil (414.895), already pre-qualified for the Olympics as the home nation, narrowly edged out Mexico (412.467) for the team bronze. Two days of competition held July 11 and 12 determined the team standings. Fraser and von Martels contested the small tour level for Canada while Lane and Trussell competed at grand prix, a new requirement for Olympic eligibility that was introduced at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games. A total of 10 countries contested the team medals, with Argentina, Canada, Mexico and the United States eligible for Olympic qualification. Fraser and von Martels both produced strong

performances for Team Canada in the Intermediaire I test. Riding Zilverstar, an 11-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding sired by Rousseau, von Martels earned an impressive score of 76.210% from the judges, which ranked him third overall in Sunday’s competition. “It was a very good test; it was personal best again,” said von Martels, 32, who is making his major games debut. “He’s going so well at the moment. We’ve focused a lot over the last month and a half to prepare for these Games. He’s peaking at the right point. We are thrilled.” For the second day in a row, Fraser produced a world-class performance for Canada riding All In to place just behind von Martels with a score of 76.079%. Strong trot and canter work were highlights for Fraser and the 10-year-old liver chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding (Tango x Damiro) that she owns in partnership with MarcAndre Beaulieu. “It was awesome, just like yesterday,” said Fraser, 26. “My horse did it again, and I’m really happy. We are so close with the U.S., and we all wanted to give really great performances.” Of her successful Pan Am Games debut, Fraser said, “It was amazing! It was like a dream come true. There is so much work that is involved in getting here, and it really pays off in the end. It’s crazy! The amount of support I’ve been getting is really incredible. I’m so thankful for that.” Lane and Trussell both contested the Grand Prix Special. The youngest member of the Canadian Dressage Team, Lane, 24, earned a score of 71.392% riding Caravella, a 14-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood mare (Contango x Riverman) owned by the athlete and her mother, Cathy Lane. “I think I have the best team that I could ask for,” said Lane, who is based 10 minutes from the OLG Caledon Equestrian Park at Deer Ridge Equestrian in Loretto, ON. “The dynamic, the energy, and the positivity are like nothing I’ve experienced. With that to lead up to a medal, I’m over the moon with this experience.” Lane has been partnered with Caravella, a mare that was competing as a Hunter before Lane purchased her, for the past six years. pair has grown up together, moving through the levels from junior up to Grand Prix. “Capping off our career with a medal — that was on the ‘to do’ list!” smiled Lane. “I’m so happy with her. We’re partners for life, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner. It’s moments like this when you can sit back and reminisce about all the effort that goes into it, and the support you have received, whether it be from sponsors, grooms — everybody who is behind the horse and yourself. It’s an amazing experience!” Riding in the anchor position for Canada was Belinda Trussell, who is an Olympian and three-time World Equestrian Games competitor. She was aboard her veteran partner Anton, a 15-year-old dark bay Sachsen-Anhaltiner gelding (Antaeus x Melit) owned by her mother, Robyn Eames, and her husband, Marc Trussell. The pair earned a score of 75.078% from the five-member judging panel. Discipline Reports continued on page 40

and Therapist Usha Knabe. With the team competition now complete, a total of 23 horse-rider combinations will move forward to the Individual Final on Tuesday, July 14. Riders do not carry forward their scores from the first two days of competition, allowing everyone to start on equal footing in the individual freestyle competition. Individual medals will be awarded at the conclusion of Tuesday’s competition. All four Canadian Dressage Team members finished in the top eight individually on both Saturday and Sunday, and all four earned scores of over 70% on both days. As only the top three riders from each nation move forward to the freestyle, Lane will sit out for Canada. Canada’s Chris von Martels Claims Individual Bronze Medal Chris von Martels of Ridgetown, ON, claimed the individual bronze medal in Dressage freestyle competition held Tuesday, July 14, at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. Dressage competition took place July 11, 12, and 14 at the OLG Caledon Pan Am Equestrian Park in Caledon, ON. Following a hotly contested team final that saw the United States edge Canada for the gold medal, 21 athletes returned on Tuesday to determine the individual medals. Von Martels and Zilverstar went from strength to strength, producing a fluid, energetic test set to music by U2. The five-member panel of judges rewarded the pair with a score of 79.50%, giving von Martels the

individual bronze medal. Von Martels was in good company in his major games debut, as United States Equestrian Team veterans Steffen Peters and Laura Graves claimed the individual gold and silver medals. Peters, a three-time Olympian, rode Legolas 92 to the winning score of 80.075% while Graves, who made waves at last year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in France by placing fifth individually, earned a score of 79.825% for silver riding Verdades. For von Martels, earning personal best scores in all three phases in front of a home crowd was a thrill. “I’m very proud,” said von Martels, 32. “Our home town audience is, of course, very fanatical and supportive, which is a boost.” Continuing to speak of the Canadian Dressage Team’s strong results at these Games, von Martels noted, “I think it paints a clear picture that we are really competitive on the international scene. Not only here in Canada, but in Europe or the U.S. We have proven at this competition that we are absolutely right on track with the rest of the top countries of the world.” Canada’s other two representatives, Belinda Trussell and Brittany Fraser, both received a score of 76.800%. Using the artistic marks to break the tie, Trussell was placed fourth while Fraser earned fifth. Trussell choreographed the required technical movements for the grand prix freestyle to an original composition by Arlene Bynon and Dave Grein. Her freestyle choreography featured an impressive piaffe and passage tour that started her test with Anton, a 15-yearold dark bay Sachsen-Anhaltiner gelding (Antaeus x Melit) owned by Robyn Eames and Marc Trussell, on a high note. At her first major games in the role of chef d’equipe, Alison Martin was thrilled with the Canadian Dressage Team’s performance, noting, “They rode exceptionally well. So many personal bests were achieved this week. They fought hard and I really feel they came out with an excellent experience. “They were excited about showing on home

turf, having a major games in their home country and, for Megan and Belinda, in their hometown,” continued Martin of North Vancouver, BC. “They felt super supported. They were totally energized by the opportunity to show here, and the fact that we were fighting for gold.” Discipline Reports continued on page 42

Discipline Reports continued from page 41 Authoritative German victory on home ground at Hagen Team Germany were in a league of their own when winning the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup Dressage 2015 pilot series on home soil in Hagen. With three scores in excess of 70 per cent and a massive 81.160 for last-line rider, Kristina Broring-Sprehe with Desperados FRH, they finished more than 15 points ahead of their nearest challengers from Denmark, while Spain slotted into third. A total of eight nations lined out for this highly-competitive leg that gave Chefs d’Equipe a chance to test horse-and-rider combinations, and team spirit, ahead of next month’s allimportant FEI European Championships in Aachen (GER). Russia lined up a close fourth ahead of Switzerland in fifth while the defending series champions from The Netherlands slotted into sixth ahead of the USA in seventh and Great Britain in eighth and last place. the results in this pilot series, and Hagen chose to run the FEI Nations Cup Dressage over just a single competition, the Grand Prix. First out for the German side, Hubertus Schmidt had an uncomfortable time when he and his 12-year-old stallion, Imperio 3, had to endure a heavy downpour as well as gusty winds. However they still managed to post a hefty 72.5 which, when it turned out to be the team discard, gave a strong indication of German superiority on the day. The individual scoresheet told the full story at the end of the day, with Germany’s BroringSprehe, Werth and von Bredow-Werndl filling the top three places ahead of Kaskprazak, Merkulova and Ferrer-Salat. Broring-Sprehe had every reason to be in buoyant mood, as she was married just over two weeks ago to long-time boyfriend Christian Broring in a civil ceremony. They plan a church wedding following the FEI European Championships 2015 in Aachen, and the 28-year-old German Dressage star certainly pleased her Chef d’Equipe with her sparkling ride in difficult circumstances. “Kristina was very, very good even though her horse got quite excited due to the weather,” Klaus Roeser said, “and Isabell was very good. Hubertus was a bit unlucky. There was very heavy wind and rain as he started, and he coped really well so his horse could show his quality, but they both had an early shower! All four riders did a great job!” he added.

Kent Farrington and Voyeur Top $400,000 Pan American Cup, Presented by Rolex July 12, 2015: Kent Farrington (USA) and Amalaya Investments’ Voyeur concluded the Spruce Meadows ‘Pan American’ Tournament CSI 5*, presented by Rolex, with a masterful win Sunday. Competing in the $400,000 Pan American Cup, presented by Rolex, competition ended impressively as the three highest ranked American riders in the world claimed top honours. With Farrington leading the way, Beezie Madden (USA) finished second aboard Abigail Wexner’s Simon, and McLain Ward (USA) placed third riding Sag-

amore Farm’s Rothchild. Thirty-three entries contested course designer Guilherme Jorge’s (BRA) first round track, with nine combinations earning the chance to jump-off, and five clear rounds over the short course. Colombia’s Roberto Teran set the standard in the jump-off aboard ARK Partners LLC’s Arkos des Rosiers Z, clear in 42.36 seconds, to eventually fifth. Charlie Jayne (USA) and Alex R. Jayne’s Chill R Z immediately upped the pace, finishing with a time of 39.56 seconds to earn the fourth place prize. Ward jumped the next clear, and easily took the lead with his remarkable partner, Rothchild, in 38.98 seconds. The lead quickly changed hands, however, as Farrington and Voyeur blasted through the course in 36.71 seconds. Last to go, Madden and Simon jumped into second with their time of 38.09 seconds. Rich Fellers (USA) and Harry and Mollie Chapman’s Flexible clocked in at 38.14 seconds, but brought down the final fence to place sixth with the fastest fourfault round. Farrington won the same competition in 2014 aboard RCG Farm’s Uceko and was back this time aboard the talented Voyeur, a 13-yearold Dutch Warmblood gelding (Tolano van’t Riethof x Goodwill ). Farrington and Voyeur most recently won the $400,000 RBC Grand Prix, presented by Rolex, during June’s ‘National’ Tournament and have been on a hot streak all season. On Sunday, the pair sprinted easily through the jump-off course to secure a substantial margin of victory. “I had the advantage in the jump-off towww.gaitpost.com

day of going after McLain,” Farrington noted. “He is one of the most competitive riders in the world, and we always have a good rivalry between us, so I got to watch him go. Unfortunately, coming after me was one of my Kent Farrington & Voyeur. other rivals, also one of the best in the world (Beezie Madden). It was a tough day of sport today and I thought my horse was fantastic.” “My horse has a huge gallop,” Farrington commented on his jump-off. “Between the second and third fence I think I did one less stride than everybody else in the competition. The rest of it, I just kind of stayed on the same pace. He has a monster gallop, and he is naturally fast across the ground anyway and that is a big advantage in a field like that.” Madden worked hard for her clear round as well, as Simon was extra strong throughout the first round. In the jump-off, she then rode the plan that she knew was best for her horse. “He was actually a little stronger than usual today,” Madden detailed. “I don’t know that I have ever shown him this many weeks in a big field, so I think it is catching up with me a little

Ward will pilot Rothchild in the Games, while Farrington will jump up-and-coming talent, Gazelle. Madden is on her way to Europe for the rest of the summer. Of 19 Nations entered in FEI competition, 12 nations depart Calgary, Alberta with Championship Titles, important FEI World Ranking points, and their piece of over 6.2 million dollars in total prize money. FLAWLESS DUTCH SCOOP FURUSIYYA VICTORY AT FALSTERBO The Dutch showed precisely why they are the reigning World and defending Furusiyya champions when soaring to victory at the sixth leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping Europe Division 1 League in Falsterbo, Sweden. It took just three of the four members of Rob Ehrens’ side to clinch it when Harrie Smolders, Maikel van der Vleuten and Leopold Van Asten all jumped double-clear, leaving anchorman Gerco Schroder with nothing to do for the entire afternoon but to watch from the sidelines. There were five nations chasing qualifying 44

August 2015

points for the Furusiyya 2015 Final in Barcelona in September and it seemed that the Germans, who were also in the hunt, might force the eventual winners into a third-round jump-off. But in the end they had to settle for joint-runner-up spot along with their hosts from Sweden, while Switzerland slotted into fourth ahead of Spain in fifth and USA in sixth place. The extraordinary run of Di Lampard’s British side ground to halt today, when the country that has enjoyed three victories so far this season lined up seventh despite a fantastic double-clear from anchorman Michael Whitaker. Team Poland finished last, hampered by a fall for anchor partnership Piotr Morsztyn and Osadkowski van Halen at the penultimate oxer in the opening round. The real battle was played out by the four points-chasing countries, the Dutch and Germans neck-and-neck on a zero score at the halfway stage followed by the Swedes and Swiss with four apiece. Like Dutch Chef d’Equipe, Rob Ehrens, Otto Becker hadn’t held back on his selection for the German side, and when Patrick Stuhylmeyer’s Lacan hit the middle element of the Longines triple first time out it didn’t matter because his fellow-countrymen had already racked up foot-perfect runs. But second time out, pathfinder Marcus Ehning and his exciting new stallion, Comme Il Faut 5, hit the first element of the triple combination and although both Janne Freiderike and her classy gelding Goja 27, and Mario Stevens and Brooklyn made no mistake, three more clears from the Dutch put major pressure on fourth-line rider Stuhylmeyer second time out. By now the Swiss had lost their grip with eight faults to add, but the Swedes held firm with three great clears. Peder Fredricson’s brilliant campaigner, Lunatic, was officially retired before the class began this afternoon, but the rider has found a lovely stallion to follow in his footsteps in the nine-year-old H&M All In who never touched a pole all day. And although Douglas Lindelow and Casello fell victim to the penultimate oxer this time out, both Helena Persson (Bonzai H) and Henrik von Eckermann

These results see the Swedes and Dutch move up behind France at the top of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping 2015 Europe Division 1 leaderboard, but for many of the other teams there is still plenty more work to be done. FEi nATiOns CUP EVEnTinG 2015: BriTish TEAm TriUmPh AT sTrzEGOm An all-female team from Great Britain eventually beat an all-male trio from Australia after a tight competition at Strzegom (POL), fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup Eventing 2015. The three-man Australian team led after Dressage, with Andrew Hoy taking the individual lead on Cheeky Calimbo, but the Brits, who were third at that stage, were collectively faster across country to take a tiny two-penalty lead going into the final Jumping phase. Kevin McNab (Casperelli), the first of the Australian team to jump, eased the pressure with four faults; then, with excitement mounting, Britain’s Emily Llewellyn (Greenlawn Sky High) and Sarah Bullimore (Valentino V) both jumped clear. When Hoy hit the last fence, Izzy Taylor (GBR) had two fences in hand for Britain to win a second FEI Nations Cup Eventing leg this season, following victory at Ballindenisk (IRL) in

Taylor has been one of the most stalwart members of Britain’s FEI Nations Cup Eventing squad since the series began in 2012 and she did not let her team down, producing a perfect clear on KBIS Starburst to finish in second place, the only rider to complete on her Dressage score. Australia’s third rider, Christopher Burton (Haruzac), hit two fences to lose his overnight lead after Cross Country and drop to fifth, but his team was assured second place as none of the other five nations had three riders left in the competition. Belgium, making a first appearance in the FEI Nations Cup Eventing 2015 calendar, finished third, with the experienced Karin Donckers taking the individual honours on Fletcha van‘t Verahof. HTBC ADULT RIDER SUMMER CAMP Adult Rider summer camp was held July 3-5th at the beautiful home of Lynne & Jens Larsen at the Dot Ranch in Merritt. I’ve been hearing about this camp since it started about 3 years ago so this year my daughter kindly loaned me her horse, I scrounged some britches and attended myself! It was everything I expected — a fabulous group of people, gorgeous setting and wonderful lessons. Our coaches, Stephanie Goodman from Idaho and Jane Stone from Cobble Hill, BC did a fabulous job with exciting, inspirational lessons. The 3 days had us doing Dressage on the grass in the Hunter field, Stadium jumping in the meadow and then Cross Country back in the Hunter field. Thank you to both coaches! There were about 40 horses in attendance and campers, trailers & tents parked all around. The weather was meltthe-pavement hot, especially the first day so after lessons we all piled into trucks,

drove a little way up the highway and jumped into the river with floaties for a lovely hour long float back to the ranch site. Thanks to Josh (Steph’s husband) for the emergency trip to Walmart for floaties!! There were some bruises received at camp, mostly due to the river float although there were some unplanned dismounts as well!! Potluck dinners were enjoyed both nights on the front lawn with a rather wild gift exchange!! Thanks to Lynne & Jens for hosting and the work in prepping for this auspicious event!! Jens has been a busy jump-builder and had a great assortment of fences in the Hunter field, the most beautiful being the keyhole jump. There were many challenges conquered and goals achieved this weekend, certainly for myself after many years out of the saddle. Kudos to Deb & “Charles” for their keyhole accomplishment! All in all a terrific weekend enjoyed by everyone in attendance! — Submitted by Jan Mills

HTBC ISLAND CLINIC REPORT Gillian dorosh & Mr. Jetson

June 6th and 7th riders from all over Vancouver Island participated in the Horse Trials British Columbia (HTBC) Spring Clinic at Avalon Equestrian Centre in Duncan, B.C. We were graced with wonderful weather over the weekend, great footing, and a large variety of Cross Country jumps to school over. The Tiana sorvin HTBC Clinician for the weekend was Jane Stone, who coached riders ranging from Introductory to Preliminary over the course of the weekend. Groups met in www.gaitpost.com

sarah Clark

the large outdoor riding ring and quickly moved to the field to warm up over the rolling terrain, trotting and cantering up and down hills. Balance was a key topic over the weekend; your horse shouldn’t be relying on you constantly. Riders were encouraged to practice giving their horses the rein while having the gait stay the same. After warming up over some smaller Cross Country jumps, groups moved on to incorporate the technical parts of any Cross Country course; ditches, water, and banks! Jane made sure to impart on us

the importance of having a strong, stable position when approaching these types of obstacles and not taking them for granted. Every ditch looks different! Riders were able to put together courses of jumps, employing all the skills that they had learned over the course of the weekend. The HTBC Spring Clinics are a great training resource for riders and allow for learning in a fun supportive environment. A special thanks to Horse Trials BC for organizing the clinic, to Avalon Equestrian Centre for hosting it, and to Jane Stone for her excellent coaching. — Sarah Clark

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Well, summer is certainly upon us and has brought the new challenge of some very warm temperatures to our sport. We had a very well attended event at the Topline Show Park in Salmon Arm, BC with temperatures into the high 30s. But the weather man was looking out for all of us even so, and brought us some nice showers for the Monday Cross country day. Maple Ridge Equestrian Center is preparing for their event as I write this and though there have been some smoky days, both the courses and the weather look great! We are so pleased to have 2 BC riders going to Kentucky for the Adequan/ North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Tosca Holmes-Smith and Renee Kalkman. So proud to have these two represent our Province and send our best wishes with them as they make their way to Kentucky. www.gaitpost.com

Looks like a good eventing summer! Let’s be fire smart as we walk around the cross country courses though! Happy Eventing! Julie Johannson President, Horse Trials BC

Product Reviews

DYNAMINT LEG AND MUSCLE SPRAY Dynamint Equine Rub has been a staple in many barns for years, as a leg brace and tightener, and our tester has used it on legs after hard workouts, or massaged it into muscle-sore backs. Now Integrated Bio-Systems has developed the same great product in a spray, which makes application so much easier. We like the consistency of it in this form — it is dilute enough to spray but not so watery that it runs off the leg before having a chance to rub it in. It can also be used under leg wraps without fear of blistering or burning, and we also appreciate the fact that Dynamint is clear and won’t stain wraps or white socks when applied. Among its ingredients, Dynamint contains peppermint oil, which has a great cooling action (fingers tingle for hours after application!), and also is known for its ability to increase blood flow. Eucalyptus oil is a rubefactant which has superior skin-penetrating qualities, and tea tree oil and calendula are both natural antiseptics and emollients. Our tester routinely rubs down lower legs, in part to find any little cuts which

often have the tendency to blow up way out of proportion to their size, and to give tendons and ligaments a little attention. The antiseptic properties give much-appreciated peace of mind. The mint/eucalyptus aroma is really strong, and that smell, in this tester’s mind, equates with effectiveness, and leaves her with a good feeling that she has done something positive for her horse. Dynamint Leg and Muscle Spray is a Canadian product and can be found in many tack shops. Integrated Bio Systems Inc is based in Abbotsford, BC. For more information, go to integratedbiosys.com.

hen the Langley Farm Federation started a programme called ‘A Pony Goes to School’, their motivation was teaching elementary school children about horses. They hoped that some of those kids would become the next

generation of riders and come to appreciate the Fraser Valley’s rural lifestyle. When Haidee Landry’s calm, quiet mare that was relied on for the past three years to visit school kids was scheduled to foal around the same time as the annual Pony Goes To School visit, the Federation found a stand-in, and it wasn’t just a horse by another name. On May 22nd, Exodus, a 14-year-old male llama, made the trek to Willoughby Elementary to teach kids all about llamas and, by extension, the Valley’s rural lifestyle. In the meantime, the original pony, Playin For Sugar — or Mini Me, as she is known around the barn — gave birth to a handsome colt. Mighty Me is sired by Simply A Spark, full brother to the famous Working Cowhorse sire, and Breyer horse, Shining Spark.
