Euro Bits Tidbits’ own Karen Robinson had the good fortune to once again be among a small group of journalists invited to the Global Dressage Forum in The Netherlands at the end of October. Unable to resist the likelihood of a major controversy within the top ranks of the FEI, Karen also attended the 2013 FEI General Assembly in Montreux, Switzerland, where events took a surprising turn. Global Harmony The Global Dressage Forum has become known for inviting controversy over its 13 years of existence. If the GDF can be trusted to serve as a gauge of the health of international dressage, then the discipline is currently in the best shape it’s been in years — maybe ever. A starwww.gaitpost.com
studded line up of presenters this year included Kyra Kyrklund, Jan Brink and, after many years of friendly persuasion by GDF founder Joep Bartels, Isabell Werth. While the mood at this year’s GDF was positive, it was by no means boring. Here are a few quotes made by presenters and

observers over the two days at the end of October: “In the whole Americas as it is today, there are only three countries that have three or more Grand Prix riders, and are able today to qualify a team for the Olympics”. FEI Dressage Director Trond Asmyr, who used the statistic to justify the reduction of Pan Am Games Olympic team qualifications in Toronto 2015 from two to one, to ‘compensate’ for the guaranteed spot given to Brazil as host country of the 2016 Olympics. “I really like it if they are a bit naughty, a bit awake. I don’t like the word submission. Horses should show their own opinions. They should buck once, and be a bit spooky. It doesn’t always look nice but it’s the kind of horse I prefer.” Isabell Werth, who took the daring step of bringing the often-naughty Don Johnson for her mounted demonstration. “When I saw Don Johnson the first time at seven I thought you were drunk when you bought him.” Michael Klimke, son of Reiner Klimke, on his way to complimenting Werth for the successful development of her current number one horse. “Not only judges, but riders are resistant to change. It’s amazing how many riders are coming and paying for a lesson but they don’t want to change.” Kyra Kyrklund, commenting on the reluctance of judges to use new tools to improve the quality of their judging in the freestyle. “I don’t like a really big walk, but a good walk. A really big walk makes it hard to get them out of the walk into piaffe. I like a horse with a quick walk rhythm.” Dutch breeder and equine talent scout Nico Witte, who gained fame for his role in the discovery and development of the stallion Jazz. “If you understand better what the scores mean, you might get more than depression from that low scoring judge.” Dressage analysis expert David Stickland, who delivered a presentation on how a closer look at the scores on the Prix St. Georges test can yield measurable value that can help riders improve their results in competition. Surprises in Switzerland The annual FEI General Assembly is often a non-event. By the time the delegates from the FEI’s 132 member federations start holding up their green ‘in favour’ cards and (much more rarely) their red ‘opposed’ cards, the disputes and resolutions have usually already taken place months, weeks, or days before the Assembly itself. This has been a year of great controversy for the FEI, whose Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

Good times for fans of the dying art of side saddle dressage, who were treated to a live demonstration of how it’s done by Dressage Canada Board Chair Sarah Bradley, who walked the walk with both legs on one side of the horse during the Pacific Regional Championships at Thunderbird in October. Bad times for Dutch Dressage star Anky van Grunsven, who bade farewell to the horse that made her career, the legendary Bonfire; he died at the age of 30 in late October. Bad times for members of the Hunter/Jumper community both north and south of the US border, who lost a beloved friend, ringmaster Clifford Haines, a native of London, Ontario, who died at the age of 64. Bad times for 2013 Burghley CCI4* winner Jock Paget of New Zealand, whose horse Clifton Promise, tested positive for the sedative Reserpine at that competition in September. Bad times for Germany’s most successful Dressage rider, Isabell Werth, who has been handed a six month suspension from the German federation after her horse El Santo tested positive for the ulcer medication cimetidine; Werth is appealing the suspension.

inability to keep the discipline of Endurance out of the news with shocking reports of doping and catastrophic horse injuries has led fingers to point straight at the FEI President HRH Princess Haya. The President’s own husband, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has been at the centre of the doping controversies, which reached a climax this summer when a box labeled ‘horse tack’ was seized from a Dubai government plane at a London airport and found to contain hundreds of doses of illegally imported drugs. The mood leading up to the 2013 FEI GA in Switzerland was one of great scepticism on the part of some of the world’s most powerful equestrian federations. France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and The Netherlands had spoken out against the FEI’s lack of action in bringing Endurance’s mounting problems under control. Princess Haya was accused of being in a position of conflict of interest, and there were even a couple of federations that went so far as to suggest the best solution would be for her to step down before her second term as President comes to a conclusion in 2014. But in Switzerland, things took a turn in a direction that perhaps only a few who are far inside the depths of the FEI’s leadership could have possibly predicted. Here is a basic outline of what took place, given in a series of quotes:
Mark Samuel of Canada, Chair of FEI Group IV.
“We have a serious problem to solve. We may not like the media coverage, and we may not agree that it’s all correct. But the levels of doping and injuries are unacceptable.” Andrew Finding, Chair of the FEI Endurance Strategic Planning Committee (ESPG) that was appointed to ‘clean up’ the discipline, as he opened a two hour presentation on how the FEI is proposing that this difficult goal would be achieved. “Endurance is the only discipline in which no technical riding skills are required as a prerequisite to compete, and in which riders are not required to have at least a basic knowledge about horses; and the problem with that is, you are asking the horse for a big, long effort in Endurance.” ESPG member Jean-Louis Leclerc of France, who also identified the intimidation of FEI officials (primarily the vets) by riders and trainers as an unacceptable but frequent occurrence in FEI Endurance competitions. Tidbits continued from page 9 “90 percent of the problems in Endurance come from three federations. My fear is that we will see a vast majority of responsible riders around the world paying for the excess and scandals of a small minority.” Pierre Arnould of Belgium, a member of the FEI Endurance Committee, identifying the Middle East as the root of the problem. “When you have something that is good and beautiful, normally you keep it. Therefore, we ask her to stay another term.” A member of the Belgian federation, which before the FEI GA was one of the most vocal critics of the FEI with respect to Endurance, making an about-face and publicly declaring support for the President, not only to fulfill her current term, but also to remain for a third term. “Based on the media, we came here thinking we should be asking for her resignation, and here we are asking her to stay another term.” USEF CEO John Long, shortly before the FEI President received a standing ovation upon returning to the Assembly, having recused herself while the delegates discussed a petition signed by 100 national federations in support of changing the FEI statutes to allow her to remain for a third term. “I’ve always said that the best job I could do as President would be to make myself redundant. My greatest success would be to be able to walk out and say, ‘you don’t need me anymore.’” Princess Haya, in a press conference following the GA in which she reiterated a statement made in September that she intends to stick to the two-term limit she herself ushered into the FEI statutes shortly after her first term began in 2006.
a royal InVITaTIon Even though it was a bit too much of a journey for her to accept, Karen Pavicic was thrilled to be invited to compete at the Royal Invitational Dressage Cup at this year’s Royal Winter Fair in November. Invitations were offered based on the current Dressage World Rankings. “I am truly honoured to have been chosen for this prestigious competition, and disappointed that we are unable to participate this year,” says Karen. “I would love to one day be able to compete there.” Karen and her Grand Prix partner Don Daiquiri may not have been in Toronto in the flesh, but their image was circulating widely through the Royal; the pair is featured on the month of December in the 2014 Dressage Canada calendar, which was on sale at the Royal. VISIT from a KInG Jay Jay Rogers hosted a clinic in October with US Show Jumper Kyle King at Gloucester Downs in Aldergrove, BC. “The clinic was an inspiration to riders from as far away as 150 Mile House,” says Jay Jay. The youngest pupil at the two day clinic was six year old Devin, who learned the importance of balance, flexibility and the ability to land on your feet for those inevitable moments when you come off a horse. “You couldn’t wipe the smile off Devin’s face,” says Jay Jay. Excellent weather allowed the clinic to be held outside. Kyle also gave an evening lecture, speaking about what it takes to bring a competition horse to top fitness. From the use of hill work to nutrition, he stressed the importance of treating the horse like a human athlete, and including a variety of activities in the daily program. “Kyle left us all with a new respect for his love of the horse and his attention to detail in their everyday care,” says Jay Jay, who expects to bring Kyle back for clinics on a regular basis. wIndSor wInnerS Kari Brown of Windsor Stables in Aldergrove reports that Windsor’s year-end trophy show was Tidbits continued on page 12

The folks at Windsor are already looking forward to 2014, whose season gets under way in May. Up In the Air Despite the fact that the venue for the 2015 Pan Am Games Eventing Cross Country course, Will O’ Wind Farm, was tentatively announced over a year ago, a final agreement has not yet been reached between TO2015 and the farm’s owner, Geoff Morgan. A number of issues have stood in the way of a contract, including the fact that the venue is privately owned, and is not part of the Caledon municipality where all the rest of equestrian sports will take place during the 2015 Pan Am Games. Rumours of a second venue being considered have left concerned members of the Canadian eventing community worrying that time will run out on the organizers to put together a two star course worthy of a major in12

ternational championship, and that legacy value for Canadian Eventing will be lost. Adding further uncertainty to the situation is the fact that the course designer who had been contracted to design the Pan Am Cross Country, Wayne Copping of Australia, underwent heart bypass surgery in November and is unable to travel until March 2014. A Leg Up on Life Susan Lund sent along some exciting news about Bailey Payne, daughter of Leigh Payne, who passed away on December 30, 2011. Shortly before she lost her battle with cancer, Leigh told her friend, Hunter/Jumper trainer Claudia Cojocar, that she was worried about the future of her beloved daughter Bailey, who had not yet decided on a career. “Claudia promised Leigh that she would see to it that Bailey had money to pursue her education so that she would be able to support herself,” says Susan. “Thanks to Claudia’s promise and many very generous people, The Bailey Payne Education Fund was established.” Bailey has now enrolled in her first course as she works toward becoming an Emergency Medical Responder, with the help of Susan. “The EMR

program is the first step towards a career in Emergency Response or Paramedicine,” says Susan. Once certified, Bailey will have the opportunity to pursue a variety of careers, including an ambulance attendant, life guard or a fire fighter. Susan and Claudia want to extend their gratitude to “everyone who helped make Leigh’s dream for her daughter a reality, and we wish Bailey every success in her new career path.”

Fresh Face at CTRA Outgoing Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association Executive Director Jennifer Barnes van Elk is excited to be handing the reins over to Anne Muir, a thirdgeneration member of the Cowichan Valley community. With 14 years of experience as a fund-raiser and community development coordinator for the MS Society of Canada, Anne also has a background with horses and competition. “We credit strong community support with enabling us to expand to better meet the needs of a diverse and growing participant population,” says Jennifer, who remains with CTRA as its Communications Officer. “It is wonderful to welcome Anne Muir during this phase of development and positive change. Anne is an incredibly accomplished professional and a perfect fit for this important role.”
Trust the French Paris was the scene of a 4,000 person demonstration in early November which also included 200 horses and ponies being led or ridden through the streets. The protest was against a dramatic tax increase proposed by the French government that would see the VAT at riding schools increase from seven to 20 percent. An estimated two million people take part in equestrian sport in France. Opponents of the tax hike predict that a third of the country’s 7,000 riding Tidbits continued on page 14

Rescue Horses and Veterans: A Good Fit November 11, 2013: On this past Veterans’ Day, The Homes for Horses Coalition salutes both our veterans, and our members that are helping them to reclaim their lives, as they give new life to horses in need. The entire mission of member organization Horses4Heroes is focused on serving military heroes and their families. Through Operation Free Ride, thousands of military men, women and their children have registered for and/or received free horseback rides at host facilities from coast to coast. In addition to recreational programs for military families, Horses4Heroes offers therapeutic programs to veterans such as Back in the Saddle, a four-week empowerment workshop, and Unfinished Business, a program for veterans with PTSD and others who need to say “good-bye,” or get over a loss or difficult situation. Wherever and whenever possible, Horses4Heroes uses rescue horses in these programs. At Zuma’s Rescue Ranch in Colorado, the ZEAL Program combines Animal Assisted Coaching and Ex-

periential Learning to help veterans rebuild trust and confidence, as well as refocus their attention to giving to the horses while healing their broken minds and bodies. “The skill developed working through life’s challenges with equine therapy partners is one that cannot compare to traditional educational models, says Jodi Messenich, Executive Director of Zuma’s. “The partnering with horses once destined for slaughter brings a level of compassion coupled with a desire to help another being. Those life lessons are creating compassionate hard working young men and women to lead our next generation.” The Soldier Buddies program at Riding Star Ranch in Florida matches returning military soldiers and military veterans with at-risk youth between the ages of 12-22. The military veterans serve as positive role models and help instill morals, character, and essential life skills to their young “Buddies”. Together, the Soldier Buddies care for a program horse, including learning how to ride, and even how to drive, in the structured equine-assisted environment. The human benefits of the program include learning responsibility, compassion, self-esteem, trust and teamwork among other social and life skills. The horses involved in the program benefit from the socialization and retraining while receiving loving, hands-on care from the Soldier Buddies. These aspects are vital to the re-homing and adoption of the rescue horses. Cindy Gendron, The Homes for Horses Coalition Coordinator, says, “These are just a few of our members that have witnessed the symbiotic relationship that rescue horses can have with humans that need healing. It’s an honor to observe how these and other members are helping veterans face unique challenges by allowing them to bond with horses facing their own.” Celebrations Conclude on Final Day of Inaugural US Dressage Finals November 10, 2013: Emotions ran high as the final six champions were crowned Sunday at the inaugural US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan in Lexington, KY. I saw Livingstone for the first time as a longlegged, 4-year-old when I was a working student for Teresa Washtock. I could barely get a bridle on him as he would put his head straight in the air every time I tried! I came off of a 14 hh Arabian, so this was a big change even trying to get on Hank. My mom fell in love with him from the first time she saw him. I was still a little on the fence, as I could not ride him at all! My mom remortgaged the house so we could afford this $7,500 OTTB (off-the-track Thoroughbred). Then the magic began. Under the watchful eye of my mom and the wonderful Pamela Arthur, my amazing journey began. The first year I had Hank (as he is fondly known), I could barely get him to pick up the right lead, and would get jumped out of the tack. There were many days of frustration, but my mom kept telling me how lucky I was. Little did I know. I started Pony Club with Hank at the D level, and won the D Rally and Fittest Horse Award. The following year, he won the Pony Club C Rally and Fittest Horse. Maybe my mom and Pam were on to something! Through the next few years, Hank and I graduated to the 2* level when he was only 8 years old, and I had been the only one to ride him. We went to NAYRC in 1998 and were the only pair www.gaitpost.com

here are a few words that bring up dread in the mind of a horse owner: Colic, Navicular and Laminitis. Today, we’ll be addressing the latter. Laminitis is the medical term for what horsemen in the past called “Founder”. Laminitis has been around for as long as the horse has existed, and very little was known scientifically about this condition other than guessing and some educated theories. Over the last few decades, exhaustive research has made great strides in determining what is actually happening inside the horse’s foot. The disappointing part of all this, however, is that we are still a long ways away from knowing how to prevent this from happening to your

horse or how to treat it successfully. For those of you who have not had to watch a horse suffer from this condition, I will try to make a complicated syndrome less complicated by explaining in simpler terms what is happening to the horse. The horse’s body is supported by the hoof wall which is analogous to our finger nail. The bone inside the hoof wall is called the coffin bone, and this bone is attached to the hoof wall by millions of interdigitations called “lamina”. This is where it gets a little tricky. During an episode of laminitis, “something” sets off a cascade of events that changes the blood supply to the lamina. Without a blood supply there is

no oxygen to the tissue, and without oxygen the lamina dies and the hoof wall starts to separate from the coffin bone. If that wasn’t bad enough, things get further complicated by the inflammation that ensues by restricting the blood supply even more so than before, thereby creating more “laminar” damage, and then you have a vicious cycle. When the lamina dies at the toe, the bone starts to pull away from the hoof wall (called rotation of the coffin bone) and is further exacerbated by external forces of the horse’s body weight and tendons. In some severe cases, the entire circumference of the coffin bone pulls away from the hoof wall (called sinking). These conditions are extremely painful to horses. So imagine someone pulling your fingernail off very slowly, and now imagine someone asking you to stand on it and walk around. There are certain factors that we know of that can initiate or predispose a horse to laminitis and most horses can fit into one of three categories: Inflammatory/Acute Gastrointestinal illnesses: These include, but are not limited to, grazing on lush green grass, grain overload, colic, and systemic illnesses; Metabolic or Endocrine (Hormonal) disturbances: Cushings Disease, Metabolic Syndrome/Insulin resistance, and Obesity; Trauma: Excessive weight bearing on one limb, and excessive concussion (road founder). Diagnosing laminitis is usually very simple and is the least challenging part of the whole process. Most horses have a very typical stance characterized by the front feet extended out, sawhorse type stance, leaning back on the hind legs or constantly shifting weight left to right or front to back. They also move like they are walking on glass; shuffling their feet and making very short strides (i.e. picture yourself walking across gravel barefooted). They all have an elevated digital pulse and varying degrees of heat or warmth to the foot depending on what stage of laminitis they are in and its severity. Hoof tester response can be quite dramatic at times and is most severe at the toe just in front of the tip of the frog. On www.gaitpost.com

radiographs, it is quite obvious when a horse has rotated, as seen on the accompanying images. Treating laminitis can be just as frustrating as trying to prevent it, and just because one treatment worked on one horse does not necessarily mean it will work on another. During the early/ acute stage it is extremely important to treat the inflammation first. This is best accomplished with ice and anti-inflammatory/endotoxic drugs such as flunixin meglumine (also known as Banamine). In cases where the underlying cause is known, such as illnesses or hormonal disturbances, treating it can be of great benefit. There are a variety of other treatments as well that aim to increase the blood supply to the foot. In chronic cases, one of the most rewarding treatments is the use of Wooden Shoes. We have been putting these on horses with chronic laminitis for the last 3-4 years with great success at

It is paramount to understand the changes that are or have taken place inside the foot, and the only way to do this is with good quality radiographs. It is equally important to understand the forces that are being applied to the damaged structures and how to counter their effects. After the radiographs are taken, the foot is trimmed to a more correct shape and balance. The shoe is then custom made by us to fit the newly trimmed foot and the break-over is bevelled into the wooden shoe itself. The wooden shoe is capable of absorbing concussion and it is much easier to shape than a metal shoe. The wooden shoe is then applied to the foot with hoof impression material for sole support, wood screws and cast material. In our experience, the horses are instantly more comfortable following their application, and as the horse moves, the wood wears itself to the correct shape that

is most comfortable for that particular horse. By improving the way the horse moves, we improve the blood supply to the foot, decrease the inflammation, improve the abnormal forces, and allow the laminar structures to begin healing. Followup radiographs are then taken in 4-6 weeks, and the shoes may or may not need to be re-set, depending on the progress that was made. A reset usually means making a new pair to fit the new foot. It is not unusual to see changes occurring as early as 4 weeks in many cases. We have been highly successful with these shoes and it is very rewarding for us and owners alike to see the relief in these horses’ eyes as they make their way across the barn aisle or to their stall to eat. If you have any questions about these shoes or feel that your horse might benefit from wooden shoes, please call our office. Eric grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. I cannot thank you all enough. Thank you Mom and Pam Arthur for all your time and patience. Thank you Buck for always believing in Hank and I, and finally getting us to make time at our last Rolex! Hank, I love you more than words. You may not have won a Gold Medal at an Event, but you have won my heart and many others. He is one of the most expressive horses I have ever met. With almost human eyes, Hank could tell you with just one look whether you were doing something right or wrong. Hank, as many of you know, likes things done his way… so by God, that’s the way I do things. He has his own set of quirks that I don’t dare try to battle. He navigated me to a third place finish. When I say he navigated me, I truly mean it. When I was off of my line to a massive corner, he literally pulled me back on to the correct line and some how jumped it clean, no thanks to me. I know I’m just one of many that can say stories like this. Hank has taught me an indescribable amount in all areas of Eventing. He taught me how to groom, ride, and coach… how many horses can you say that about? I can’t describe in words what Hank means to me. According to manufacturer Racing blue, Storm promotes buffering of lactic acid in muscles by boosting muscle carnosine synthesis, allowing horses to work at maximum speed and power for longer. CLINICREVIEW
Robert Dover clinic at High Point Equestrian Club in Langley, BC.

O
n October 19th and 20th, the impressive High Point Equestrian Club hosted American Dressage rider Robert Dover. Robert Dover has competed in six consecutive Olympic Games as well as four World Championships and seven World Cups. This impressive wealth of experience and Robert’s relaxed manner made for a productive clinic for auditors, riders, and horses alike. CONTROL IS INSIDE POWER There was a consistent message to his lessons, even though he was presented with horses of varying levels of training, and of all shapes and sizes. Many horses were strong in the bridle, and Robert got riders to let go, go forward, and be ok with them moving over the ground in a big way. “Drop him a bit in his movement so all he feels 24

is his own athleticism, not just pulling, and let him find his own sweet spot.” Pressing the horse up, using the piaffe mechanic to get the passage mechanic, disallowing the horse’s wrong answers and praising the correct response – all things we inherently know, but Robert was able to reproduce in horse after horse in this clinic. LET YOURSELF BOUNCE A LITTLE These aren’t words you hear from a clinician very often! If you are always braced against the horse with your thighs, for example, the horse is always going to think, “am I stopping?” What is the first thing you do when your horse is running away — brace with your upper leg to start the whoa. Robert rode several horses during the clinic, kept it very loose and relaxed in the saddle,

BRILLIANCE LIVES IN THE EDGE The line between positive and negative tension is a hair’s breadth. Brilliance is so near the edge, that riders don’t want to go there, because it ceases to be fun past the edge. Finding that balance on the edge is the challenge. A HALF-HALT AWAY FROM PERFECT The work Robert did with most of the horses was to learn to take variations of the posture of the passage through piaffe to extension and back to collection. Animation and energy was the result. When the horse loses his concentration through either his lack of understanding or doubting his physical ability to do the job, he thinks he is going to get into trouble. To escape the pressure, he leaves in one way or another. The rider needs to breathe through the horse’s lack of understanding and get back on the job with praise as soon as possible. Reduce the pressure. Horses that are pushed early, without consideration of who they are as emotional beings, eventually burn out. They need positive feedback constantly. The worst thing to do is punish these “heartbreak horses”, as it is what they are already expecting. NO COMPROMISING Canadians, Robert says, are just happy to be taking part at the top levels. We don’t feel like winners, and we “work hard at being mediocre”. While this takes us slightly aback, is he not right? Are Canadians not the polite ones, always saying “No, please, after you”? Our culture is famous for it! Perfection, confidence, consistency, with no compromise, and to truly believe we are worthy and deserving of winning — that is what Canadians need. We are completely capable of achieving Robert’s consistent message, which was to be in The System or have A Plan. On an individual basis, as well as a National basis, Canadians need a strong, consistent plan to succeed, and they will. www.gaitpost.com
Some tips from Robert: · Riders need to immerse themselves in the System as best they can, with the best people they can. · Read books, absorb everything, and watch all riders. · Never stop learning, or looking for harmony. · Tell your horse he is awesome for every little progression. · You are just a half-halt away from perfection. scott hayes

The Banner continued from page 21 the Duncan Pony Club. Since then, Violet has worn many hats, including Regional Commissioner for the entire Islands region; she was also instrumental in putting this National level competition together. Canadian Pony Club would like to thank Violet for her many years of dedication and hard work that has, in turn, benefitted countless young riders and their present (and future) horses. Another noteworthy volunteer who hails from the BC Lower Mainland region is Melanie Rupp, who coordinated the travel and administrative details for the BCLM girls, thereby making this exciting opportunity possible for them. What exactly is Quiz? Well, typically, National Quiz is divided up into two different competitive divisions, C (intermediate level) and A/B Affiliate (upper level). Affiliate members of Pony Club are between 21 and 25 years of age, but it’s not about how old you are, it’s about how much you know. Picture the TV show Jeopardy, with questions focused entirely on everything to do with equines, and you might start to get the picture. Competitors at the 2013 National Quiz contested three (or more!) different sections, one written, one visual and one game. In the C division, Thea Rogak of Vancouver Pony Club topped the competition, ending with a final mark of 57.03. This score is significant in that not only was Thea two points ahead of her nearest competitor, there was also a mere ten points separating 2nd and 26th place. In
other words, the competition was tough, but Thea was much tougher! In that same division, Laura Forde of Richmond Pony Club placed 5th, and for both girls, it was their first time at National Quiz. In addition to Rogak and Forde, Emily McCallum took time out of her busy first year university schedule to complete the team, which ended up first overall, while Caitlin Edge, who had recently moved to 100 Mile House, even took the time to drive down to the lower mainland for a practice prior to the competition. In the AB/Affiliate division, Kaya Hunter of Vancouver Pony Club was first by three points over second place. Kyara Hunter of Glen Valley Pony Club, another first-timer, was 7th, and together with Sam Thirkell and Marlies Kerkhoven of Mission Hills Pony Club, their team also placed first. The Canada/USA Challenge was also held. In this competition, C team members could choose to write an additional test, and then challenge the US team — all done in front of the audience at the awards banquet. Members winning now can go forward to compete at the International PC Quiz, to be held in Lexington, Kentucky in 2014. Kudos to Marta Macintosh, who helped coach the BCLM girls to victory. This makes it a clean sweep for BCLM under Marta’s tutelage — including three years in a row for the AB team. And that is truly what Pony Club is about: education about horses, without losing sight of the fun that horses bring to our lives.

FIRST DECADE ENDS - NEXT ONE BEGINS FOR HORSE EXPO The first decade of The Mane Event ended on a high note in Chilliwack, BC after three successful days of non-stop activity at Heritage Park. Over 23,000 spectators, participants, attendees and shoppers came through the doors over the weekend. As usual, one of Sunday’s highlights was the Trainer’s Challenge final which ended with Kerry Kuhn of Kansas being named the Champion after a count of the final scores revealed that they were extremely close. “Everything can change with this obstacle course, and it really did,” said judge Miles Kingdon. “This has been the toughest judged final session that we’ve ever done.” Judge Mark Grafton agreed, saying, “It was a real fun challenge because all three of those trainers really shone at different points.” “It was really about the horse and I’m just thankful that I didn’t get in his way any more than I did,” said Kuhn, after accepting the championship. “I don’t really want to say that I was competing against these guys, maybe just hanging out with them, learning from them,” he said, referring to Paul Clarkson of Australia, and BC trainer Cayley Wilson. The stands were filled to capacity for the reining and cow work clinics presented by Al Dunning, a major force within the AQHA as a competitor, a judge and as the 1996 Professional Horseman of the Year. “I had a great crowd here at The Mane Event,” he said. “I don’t remember a better crowd than I had here; it was really an educated crowd.” Dressage clinician Anne Gribbons, who is

one of a very small select group of FEI 5* judges, also commented on the knowledgeable audiences. “They were very tuned in and they really listened,” she said. Show jumping Olympic gold medallist and renowned trainer Joe Fargis talked about what the focus of his training sessions. “If I had to narrow it down to one thing I would say it is to be clear to the horse about what you want. The horse is a very generous creature and many of us riders/humans give conflicting signals to them,” he said. “If every person agreed with just one thing I said over this weekend, and took it home and practiced it, I would be very, very happy.” A presentation was made to the Barker family, recognizing their efforts over the past ten years, from the conception of The Mane Event as a comprehensive, equine specific educational event to the major horse expo that it is today with events in both Chilliwack, BC and Red Deer, AB. “It is hard to believe that an event of this magnitude is put on by only the four members of the Barker family, with a very small core group
brought in to help on event weekends,” said media consultant Jan Mansfield. “The Mane Event is so well run and such a great environment, that the international clinicians they bring in regularly ask to be invited back, and exhibitors sign up as soon as the weekend is over to ensure they have a place in the trade fair for the next one.” “We are well underway with planning for next year’s events to begin our second decade,” said Gail Barker. The weeklong festival celebrating the horses, heritage and hops of the Bluegrass took place at the Alltech Arena in the Kentucky Horse Park from October 29-November 3. The Alltech National Horse Show continued a tradition of equestrian excellence while celebrating its 130th year — the longest run of any indoor horse show in America. More than 500 horse-and-rider combinations competed in various events during the week, with a total estimated attendance of more than 18,500 spectators, riders and event organizers throughout the week. Sadie Boschert of Midway College won a trip for four to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy on Friday, November 1, as part of Alltech’s first Barn Night in the Bluegrass. The event, which drew 400 participants, invited local youth horse enthusiasts to show spirit for their respective barns by donning festive attire and creating banners. The first year of Savor Kentucky brought in more than 1,000 attendees, often standing elbow to elbow as they talked and sipped from commemorative pilsner glasses, discussing which of the more than 25 local brews were their favourites. Bourbon fans lined up around the 360-degree wood bar, conversing with representatives of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and garnering samples from more than 35 bourbons.

epresentatives from National Federations on four continents made impassioned pleas for HRH Princess Haya to reverse her decision not to stand for a third term as FEI President during the FEI General Assembly in Montreux, Switzerland. The calls came after 100 National Federations signed a petition requesting the convening of an extraordinary general assembly as soon as possible for the purpose of amending the Statutes in order to prolong the term of the FEI President. Princess Haya excused herself from the discussions, stating that it was inappropriate for her to be in the room when issues of governance relating to the Presidency were being debated. Representatives from Belgium, Mauritius, 36

Sudan, Chinese Taipei, USA and Jamaica made passionate speeches, calling on Princess Haya to reconsider the decision not to seek a third term when her Presidency ends in November 2014. “It’s ironic to think that, from the media perspective, we were told that we would be coming here to seek her resignation, but in reality we’re seeking her return,” United States Equestrian Federation Secretary General John Long said. Following the speeches, Princess Haya returned to a standing ovation from delegates. The Bureau, which met immediately after the General Assembly, has agreed that the extraordinary general assembly will be held on the second day of the FEI Sports Forum in Lausanne on April 29th, 2014.

BRITAIN WITHDRAWS FROM FEI WORLD EqUESTRIAN GAMES 2018 BID PROCESS The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) has confirmed to the FEI that it is withdrawing from the bid process for the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 and will not now be putting in a formal bid. The FEI had received four formal Expressions of Interest by the September 30th deadline, one from Britain, two from the USA – Wellington and Kentucky – and a repeat bid from Bromont/Montreal in Canada. However, BEF Secretary General Andrew Finding has now informed the FEI that Britain will not be going any further in the bid process. In a letter to FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos, Andrew Finding wrote of his “considerable regret” at the withdrawal, stating that there was insufficient time under the terms of the new bidding process for the British Federation to secure the necessary funding and identify a host venue by November 15th, the deadline for receipt of formal Bid Applications.
“While it is of course disappointing that the British Equestrian Federation has decided not to go ahead with a bid for the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018, we still have three strong candidates in the mix from Wellington, Kentucky and Bromont/Montreal and look forward to receiving their formal bid applications by November 15th,” Ingmar De Vos said. Host city candidates will be announced on December 2nd, 2013. Formal presentations will be made by these candidates to the FEI Bureau at its Spring 2014 meeting, prior to the announcement of the host city for the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018. FEI News continued from page 37 (ESPG) session at the FEI General Assembly in Montreux, Switzerland. The Group had been tasked by the FEI Bureau to develop a strategic plan for the sport for the next decade and a series of recommendations for a permanent solution to the issues within the sport, particularly those related to the increased levels of positives and high numbers of injuries and fatalities. During the two-hour session, the Group highlighted a series of far-reaching recommendations designed to tackle the problems the sport is currently facing. ESPG Chair Andrew Finding (GBR) opened the session with a hard-hitting message, “We are all responsible to find the solutions for the problems we face today. We need a clear vision and a strong strategy for Endurance sport, and where better to develop this than from within the equestrian community that cares about the future of this sport so much. By working together we will achieve this. The strategic plan we

propose sets out a vision and a set of values we will expect everyone to adhere to if they genuinely want to be an active part of our family. Those who do not should be asked to leave us.” FEI Veterinary Director Graeme Cooke presented statistics on the trends in positives, which had spiked in FEI Regional Group VII but are now starting to show a decrease. He also provided data on the officially reported serious injuries and fatalities in the sport, stressing the urgent need for a radically improved reporting system. Included in this is the Injuries Surveillance System (ISS), which adopts a more consistent approach using modern data management techniques. This is being used initially in Endurance, and then rolled out across other FEI disciplines with the support of the University of Glasgow. The Group will now present a consultation package to National Federations by the end of November, including feedback from the session. Its conclusions will be finalized by the end of January and will then be presented at an Endurance conference to be held in Lausanne (SUI) in

A main goal of the effort, Para-Reining athletes could one day earn a spot to represent their nation at international Para-Reining championships. The goal of the USPeA is to foster growth in the Para-equestrian disciplines. From local horse shows to international olympic Games, the USPeA will provide Para-equestrians the knowledge of what they need to succeed. The USPeA connects with the international olympic Committee (ioC), the Federation equestre internationale (Fei), USA Reining and USeF which provide Para-equestrians the top equestrian resources.
FEI News continued from page 38 February. The National Federations will be asked to develop and set the key performance indicators: the measures for success. This process will start at the Endurance conference in February. The conclusions will be shared with the FEI Bureau in March 2014 and, in conjunction with the final Bureau decisions, will then be made public at a special Endurance session at the FEI Sports Forum in Lausanne at the end of April. “There is a problem to resolve, it is serious and systemic,” the ESPG Chair concluded. “I am confident that it can be resolved, but no committee and no plan on paper can achieve anything without the commitment of people,” the Chair of the ESPG said. “I urge you please to work with us in a spirit of positive determination to succeed. Failure cannot be an option.”

J
ordan Macpherson of Toronto, ON was crowned the 2013 National Talent Squad Series Champion in front of a hometown crowd at the Royal Horse Show on November 10. Riding Aanwinst, an eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by JEM Stables Inc., Macpherson made a clean sweep of the Final, winning both phases to earn a total of 14 points. Her initial win came on November 7 in the $8,000 Alfred Rogers National Talent Squad Series Championship - Phase 1. Renowned course designer (and 1976 Individual Show Jumping Olympic Silver Medalist for Canada) Michel Vaillancourt set a challenging track for an against-the-clock speed round.

But, Macpherson and Aanwinst tackled the multiple combinations and tricky broken lines, putting in one of only three clear rounds and crossing the timers in just 63.04 seconds. McLain Ward takes the $100,000 Hickstead FEI World Cup Grand Prix in Toronto November 6, 2013: In a masterful display of horsemanship, America’s McLain Ward (Brewster, NY) and Rothchild blazed a path to victory tonight in the Ricoh Coliseum, taking top honours in the $100,000 Hickstead FEI World Cup Grand Prix presented by GroupBy for the fifth time in his career.

Discipline Reports continued from page 51 “The Hickstead class”, as it is now known, was renamed to honour the great horse Hickstead, following his passing in 2011. Hickstead carried Canadian Eric Lamaze to an individual gold medal, and Team silver in jumping at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Harrie Smolders of the Netherlands finished second aboard his firecracker of a mare, Regina Z. Of twenty-four horses to tackle the initial round of sixteen jumping efforts on course, just seven were able to advance to the jump-off designed by 1976 Olympic silver medalist, Michel Vaillancourt. “I thought it was a really smart course,” said Ward when asked about the biggest challenge out there tonight. “There were a lot of places to have four faults, but not one terrible spot. He got you softly in a few places.” Ward followed Smolders in the second round, and was able to observe the incredible turns and angles the pair executed, in hopes of duplicating and improving upon their time. Ward pushed Rothchild to an incredible pace, and admits luck was on their side at the Toronto skyline wall, where the bricks moved, but did not topple. Alexandra Perry takes Red Ribbon in 2013 Jump Canada Medal Final at Royal Horse Show November 6, 2013: Alexandra Perry of Vancouver, BC obtained a hard-fought win on November 5 in the 2013 Jump Canada Medal Final at the CSI4*-W Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. the height of 1.10m, and included multiple broken lines, tricky angles, and both one- and twostride combinations, Perry was called back into the ring as part of the top eight riders for the flat phase aboard her 17-year-old Westphalian gelding Alezan 7. The judges put all eight riders through rigorous testing in the flat phase, which accounted for 40 percent of the overall marks (with 60 percent awarded for the over fences phase). The top four riders from the flat phase were then asked to move forward into an additional jumping test over a shortened course. The following riders joined Perry in the testing phase: Jessica Blum of Gormley, ON, Savanna King of Calgary, AB, and Dannie Murphy from Charlottetown, PEI. The four riders lined up and were called on to complete the test one-by-one. Challenges within the test included cantering directly from the line up to the first jump, and counter-cantering a jump. In a rare occurrence, at the completion of the first test, the judges asked for their top two riders — Perry and Blum — to participate in a second test, this time involving hand-galloping a jump, halting, and trotting directly back to the line up. At the end of this year’s four-part Final, Perry was given the top spot, followed by Blum in second place, King in third place, and Murphy rounding out the top four. Perry’s coach, Canadian Show Jumping Team veteran Laura Balisky, was also overjoyed by the win. Discipline Reports continued on page 54

eventing report Third time lucky for Fox-Pitt in tense finale at Pau November 8, 2013: William Fox-Pitt had three shots to clinch Les Étoiles de Pau (FRA), first event of the FEI Classics 2013/2014 season but, in a nail-biting finale, it took the Briton until his third and last ride, Seacookie TSF, to secure the top prize. After an outstanding day’s Cross Country, Fox-Pitt was in the rarefied position of holding the top three places. However, his triple winning chance began to shrink alarmingly when Neuf des Coeurs, third at that stage and jumping out of order, hit five rails and plummeted to eventual 15th place. To add to the tension, his next ride, Cool Mountain, lying second, dropped a rail, and therefore a place, to third. Then Phillip Dutton (USA) and Mr. Medicott, who had been lying fourth behind the Fox-Pitt trio, provided breathing space by hitting a rail. This gave Fox-Pitt a fence in hand to win on his Cross Country leader, Seacookie TSF, and only using up that margin, he finally clinched victory. “It’s always nerve-racking coming into the Show Jumping when you’re in the lead, but hav54

ing a fence in hand helps,” said a relieved and thrilled Fox-Pitt, who was clocking up the 12th CCI4* win of his outstanding career and his second victory at Pau within two years. “Seacookie jumped clear when he won Blenheim CCI3* last year and when he was second at Kentucky in April. When he had a rail down this time, things did get a bit tense again, but he went on jumping well and it was my lucky day, I guess.” The sensation of the day was France’s Maxime Livio, a CCI4* debutant, who used all his experience riding in international Jumping competitions to conjure a clear round from the 12-year-old Anglo Arab Cathar de Gamel. This moved them up to second place and a career best. “My idea is to go into a competition feeling I can do it or there’s not much point being there, but to be second is fantastic,” said Livio. “My Dressage wasn’t 100%, you can always make it better. Across country, my horse was quite tired at a few points and I had to calm down, so I hope to see those few seconds [over the optimum time] disappear in the future.” Olympian Eventer Hawley Bennett-Awad Shines at Prestigious Pau CCI4* October 28, 2013: A formidable field headed for Les Étoiles de Pau CCI4* in the French Pyrenees. Twelve nations fielded some seventy five horse/ rider combinations. Competitors included Olympic Games medalists and the top seven best competitors on the International ranking list. The pair finished the course with 13.2 time faults placing them 23rd. Canadian Eventers Close Out North American International Competition Season November 5, 2013: Canadian Eventing athletes closed out the international competition season in North America, competing on two coasts at the CCI Galway Downs International Three Day Event in Temecula, CA, USA and the CCI 1* Virginia Three Day Event held in Lexington, VA, USA. In California, Kiyomi Foster of Surrey, BC; Canada’s only CCI3* entry in the division at Galway Downs, placed in the top ten riding Tasman Sea, her own 16-year-old New Zealand Thoroughbred gelding. The pair led off their first CCI 3* competition in 14th place on a Dressage score of 63.7 penalties before tackling Ian Stark’s (GBR) Cross Country course. Foster and Tasman Sea faced tough questions on course, earning 20 jump and 7.2 time penalties and ending day two on 90.9 penalties. Sunday’s Show Jumping round proved to be difficult with the pair taking down four rails for 16 faults and 3 time penalties, finishing on a final score of 109.9, which was good for ninth place. 56

Royal Victory for Canada’s David Marcus November 8, 2013: Canadian Olympian David Marcus of Campbellville, ON, won the Grand Prix and placed second in the Grand Prix Freestyle in the $20,000 Royal Invitational Dressage Cup held November 6 and 7 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. Limited to the best riders in the nation, the top four Canadians in the world rankings were invited to contest the $20,000 Royal Invitational Dressage Cup. The win was even more special as the Canadian Dressage Athlete Assistance Program, founded by Marcus’s owner, Deborah Kinzinger, was also the presenting sponsor of this year’s event. Riding his 2012 London Olympic mount, Chrevi’s Capital, Marcus earned a score of 70% from the panel of judges for his Grand Prix test. London Olympic alternate, Diane Creech riding Devon L, placed second with a score of 67.80%. Marcus is in the unique position of having two grand prix mounts, and gave the nod to Chrevi’s Capital over Don Kontes, also owned by Kinzinger, for the $20,000 Royal Invitational Dressage Cup. Chrevi’s Capital handled the atmosphere and comfortably performed the Grand Prix Freestyle in front of approximately 4,000 spectators in the Ricoh Coliseum. The program, compiled by Dutch freestyle designer Joost Peters, allowed Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital to execute several difficult movements set to the music of George Michael and Wham!. The judges rewarded the pair with a score of 72.917%, reversing the top placings of the previous day’s competition and

was a really good ride. He’s a really talented, talented horse,” Creech raved about Devon L, who she broke herself and has been riding for over 10 years. “It’s a pretty electric atmosphere, so I think that every horse starts getting a little bit worried. But, I was very happy with him and he felt very confident in there today. I think he had just as much fun as I did,” continued Creech, a Pan American Games Team Silver Medalist and alternate for the 2012 London Olympics.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
ALL PHoToS DiViNeeqUiNe.CA
Well another Eventing year has come and gone in BC and what a great year it was! And to round it all out, Horse Trials BC held the 2013 Annual General Meeting and Denim and Diamonds Awards Banquet at Harrison Hot Springs on October 26th. It is always a pleasure to talk to our members, but this year was special for me as I was able to present the Horse Trials BC Tray of Honour to Heinrich Meister and Rolf Wedler — two dedicated, hard working gentleman who have been a part of the Island 22 Organizing Committee since its inception in 1988. We have so many talented riders, and it was nice to see some of our BC talent like Sabrina Glaser-Levere have such a great year eventing in BC. The New Strides Group was once again very supportive of our riders who have taken Thoroughbreds from the track to a new career, and they were on hand to present their awards. We are very pleased to have such a great association with New Strides. As we look ahead to the year to come, we are pleased to have two event sites returning to the calendar in BC, in Johvale, which is located in Pritchard, BC, and Avalon Farms, in Duncan, BC. With 11 events on the calendar, including an FEI completion at Chase Creek in Chase, BC, 2014 looks to be even better! It has definitely been an honour to represent such a great membership this
