After completing high school a year early and with university still more than 12 months away, her dad gave her the option of going to England to ride -- an opportunity that she gladly took. this experience solidified stephens’ lifelong passion for horses. stephens’ career in officiating started in the mid1970s with local stewarding and judging. ebi Metcalfe founded Stolen Horse International (quickly nicknamed the “Net Posse,” NetPosse.com) as a nationwide partnership of animal enthusiasts who could help spot and recover stolen horses. Now, with 11 years of experience helping horse owners track down their beloved mounts, the Net Posse has the wisdom and resources to help prevent thefts. The organization will always help track down missing horses, but is now focused on teaching horse owners how to deter theft and ID their animals with microchips so that the four-legged family members can be easily tracked. “NetPosse.com is a place for horse owners to learn to be proactive--not just reactive,” Metcalfe says. “If someone contacts the posse after their horse has been stolen, there’s only a certain

amount we can do. But if the horse has an ID and is registered, we have tracking data and a way to help locate and claim the horse.” The Netposse.com website offers the first allequine ID microchip registry deemed the ‘NetPosse Identification Program’ (NIP). First get your horse microchip, then register the chip for a one-time $20 registration. NIP members register their horses and tack— and add identifying photos for easy access when needed. NIP members can register all horses and tack in one database and have access to update records at any time. Additionally, NIP members receive free NetPosse.com listing reports if a horse or tack are ever missing. Look for packages that include a microchip and registration for the chip.

blood

Essential for survival, yet an average size adult horse can lose over 5 liters of it without dramatic consequences.

T

hat being said, even though a horse can lose such a big volume, veterinarians only require a few milliliters to send to the laboratory for analysis. In reality, only a few drops of blood can reveal a gigantic amount of information and help veterinarians choose the appropriate treatment for your horse. That is because blood contains such a high variety of components and every single one is necessary for the body to function properly. Blood is like a major transportation system. The heart pumps it throughout the entire body and it will deliver whatever it needs to and from the various organs of an individual. Oxygen, nutrients, hormones and white blood cells are amongst important components that travel through blood. Not only does it carry the good stuff, but it also transports toxins, waste and potentially infectious organisms. All of these blood

www.gaitpost.com

components can tell us valid information about a horse’s health. Here is a very brief overview of what we can actually learn from the lab results. The regular blood analysis The first and most well-known role of blood is to take oxygen from the lungs and deliver it to the cells in all the organs via the red blood cells. A low red blood cell count is called anemia and can be caused by a multitude of conditions. If the anemia is severe, organs may not receive enough oxygen and the patient may require a blood transfusion. The second type of cells examined by a regular blood analysis are the white blood cells. They are like little soldiers. They defend the body. They attack intruders, whether they are parasites, vi-

Vet’s View continued on page 14 December 2014

13

Vet’s View continued from page 13 ruses, bacteria or even some forms of cancer. When the body is under attack by a microorganism, such as influenza, it will produce and send out an increased number of soldiers to fight it off. An increase in white blood cells is most often the sign of infection or inflammation. This being said, we will know that the body is responding to an attack, but are unable to determine the exact cause. For instance, there is no way to tell which virus exactly is causing such an increase or even where in the body the source of infection is located. We can appreciate how severe the problem is in most cases by the amount of increase. If there are a lot of white blood cells, there’s a big problem to treat. On the other hand, if there are not enough white blood cells, it can mean that the body is unable to produce a sufficient army to defend it, meaning the problem is completely overwhelming or has happened so recently that the body hasn’t had time to respond. Next, we evaluate signs that the internal organs are working well. Toxins and unwanted products are carried via the circulation through the liver and kidneys, which act as filters among other things. Toxins will then be eliminated through urine, stored somewhere in the body or transformed into something harmless. When the kidneys or the liver aren’t working, they stop filtering the blood adequately. The amount of trash normally eliminated will rise in the blood since it’s not being evacuated properly. Again, in this situation, we will be able to determine that the kidneys are not working properly if a certain kidney enzyme goes up, but it does not tell us what or why. Is it a virus? Is it a cyst? Is it a tumor? But now we know which organ to look at. So far, the take-home-message is that through a regular blood analysis, we can gain extremely valuable information on what is wrong with a patient but, on the other hand, the cause is still unknown at this point most of the time. Additional testing Blood contains a lot of answers if you ask 14

December 2014

the right questions. Although the regular blood analysis is not precise, we can send off blood for very precise purposes. For example, we can test hormone levels, such as insulin or testosterone. We can use blood to test for specific viruses as well. Unfortunately, we need to test for each virus individually. Almost each piece of additional information is a different test. Therefore, you can probably appreciate how extensive and costly it can become. Minerals and vitamins that are present in very small quantities can also be evaluated, such as copper, zinc, selenium and vitamin E, for example. Even though they are present in the body in a very limited amount, an excess or deficiency can become debilitating. For example, a deficiency in Vitamin E and Selenium can cause white muscle disease, a severe condition causing muscle weakness that can be fatal. Those are not part of a typical or regular blood analysis but may need to be added on if a deficiency or excess is suspected. There are many other tests that we can run on blood for various reasons. We also find new or improved tests regularly. Blood has so much information because it is a reflection of what is going on through the entire body. It has many components and analyzing it can be very helpful in figuring out what is wrong with a horse. This information can be crucial in making the right treatment choice. Sometimes we can even detect problems before the onset of clinical signs in an apparently normal looking horse. On the other hand, the exact cause of the problem is harder to determine and often requires additional testing. It is important to remember that analysing blood does not replace a complete examination of your horse, but instead is added valuable information in determining the right course of action in a specific situation. Dr Marielle St-Laurent, DVM graduated from the University of Montreal in June 2010. She completed Paton & Martin’s internship program and is now a full time associate veterinarian. Marielle was a competitive Dressage rider prior to entering vet school. She recently got back in the saddle and started training and competing again.

The multiple world-record-breaking British partnership of Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro claimed the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage 2014 title at Lyon, France last April. The 2014/2015 Western European League qualifying season began at Odense in Denmark.

T

he equine stars have often been called “dancing horses” in recent years, particularly since Freestyle has come to the fore. Performing difficult and demanding movements to music has ensured increasing public interest ever since Holland’s Anky van Grunsven first broke the mold. Partnering the legendary Bonfire, and later Salinero, she turned the previously ultraconservative discipline into a fascinating and entertaining sporting spectacle during her 13-year FEI World Cup Dressage winning spree that began in 1995 and ended in 2008. During that time she lifted the trophy on nine occasions, and the Dutch head the leaderboard for most wins in the series with a total of 14.

www.gaitpost.com

Throughout van Grunsven’s career, however, she was always stalked by Germany’s Isabell Werth, who has claimed the FEI World Cup Dressage title twice. Werth recorded her first victory in 1992, at the age of 23, and the second at Las Vegas in 2007. She knows what it takes to sparkle under the spotlight having done it so many times, and she kicks off her 2014/2015 campaign at Odense in Denmark in top form, having been part of the gold-medal-winning German team at the recent Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. whom the Dutchman lifted the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage trophy in 2010. One of the most exciting prospects for the forthcoming season is the possibility of a head-to-head between the black stallion, which is now competed by Germany’s Matthias Alexander Rath, and the British duo who have taken the sport by storm over the last two years. Defending Reem Acra FEI World Cup champions, Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro, currently hold all the titles on offer in the sport. They set the world on fire when taking double gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and their magical quality is second to none. It seemed they were all but unbeatable until coming up against Rath and Totilas at Aachen, Germany this summer where the German pair came out on top. That means there is now a score to be settled, and Dressage fans all over the globe are hoping that the two greats will have a re-match at the Reem Acra season-closer under the bright lights of Las Vegas next year.

lizabeth Short, who was known to most people in the BC horse community as Liz Robinson, passed away at home in Union Bay, BC at around midnight on November 3, 2014 after a battle with Alzheimer’s and cancer. A native of Nova Scotia, Liz was a passionate member of the equestrian community since moving to BC in the nineteen sixties. Robinson Equestrian Centre, built in the late seventies, was a hive of all manner of horse activity throughout the next decade, from therapeutic riding programs to northern BC’s only horse trials. In addition to teaching, training and competing extensively, Liz was a Level I coaching examiner. In the nineties she returned to Nova Scotia to attend Acadia University, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Education (counselling) and earned a Governor General’s Medal for her Master’s Thesis on at-risk adolescent girls. Liz then returned to her other passion besides horses, working with children. She was an elementary school counsellor in the Coquitlam school district until her retirement in 2010. My mother taught me by example the values of kindness, honesty and hard work. A strong character, she will be remembered for her wicked sense of humour and love of a party as much as for her many achievements and contributions. Mom, the memories endure, but your absence is deeply felt. All of us at Gaitpost send our deepest condolences to Karen and her family. Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

As a rider who started later in life (about age 30), with bigger dreams than talent, Seven was a challenge for me to ride. He had an unbelievably bouncy trot and a propensity to do nothing unless asked absolutely correctly. Leslie Reid, with whom we were boarded at that time, used to have her riders do longeing lessons on him to improve their seats. I remember one rider getting on Seven, and as he launched into his trot, she shrieked, “Oh!! I need my sports bra!” After a few years, he was sold to a rider in Maple Ridge (who obviously had a better seat than I!) and she later sold him when he was about 15. A friend of mine in Langley, Georgia Fontaine, asked me recently if I had ever owned a horse named Seven. Surprised, I told her that I had indeed owned Seven. It turns out that Seven was sold to a woman named Jennifer MacKenzie, who was very badly injured in an eventing accident when she was young and was thereafter disabled. Jennifer and her mother were friends of Georgia and somehow my name came up in a conversation about Seven. My name was, of course, on his passport. They were discussing Seven because he had recently had his 30th birthday! There had been a retirement party for him at the Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre during the BC Disability Games where Jennifer, in her Canada colours, rode him around the Grand Prix field. I went to see him when I was in the Lower Mainland for the Mane Event. Jennifer and her Mom, Vi, met me at his barn on 8th Avenue in Langley. Coincidentally, Seven’s sister, Valentine, is there with him and their stalls are side by side. They are, of course, the best of friends. Seven was beautifully brushed, standing in the cross ties and waiting for his next treat. He is a dear old man, hardly recognizable to me because his face was very grizzled and white. The perfect “7” ,for which he was named, was blurred with all the

white hair on his face. But he still had great teeth and eats well and looked wonderful! The best part of this story is that I got to meet Jennifer and went to watch her have a lesson with her current trainer, Monique Fraser, on the beautiful Warlander mare, Lexy. In talking with Jennifer and her mother, I learned that Seven “had given her life back to her.” He had allowed her to ride again, to do what she loved to do. After acquiring him she went on to earn many championships as a para-equestrian rider. She has had Seven for 14 years now , and while he is no longer ridden, he is wonderfully cared for and dearly loved. It was very pleasing to think that Seven had allowed Jennifer to become such a great rider! When I owned Seven, an artist named Jenny Haddelton (well known to everyone in Southlands) painted a portrait of Seven. It is a lovely portrait of him, so young and handsome and a bit of a brat! It will soon be in Jennifer’s possession. It belongs with her. As we all know, the horse world is very small. When Seven was moved to Langley, we were located at the equestrian centre at the corner of 18th Avenue and 16th until Leslie built her barn

was sold to Leslie. Now Fionna taught me to ride him and it was an amazing journey. So safe, sensible and talented, he qualified me for many para equestrian endeavors. It was easy to love that big, black fellow and the confidence I gained was truly heart-warming. As Seven grew older, some arthritis issues became apparent and, with Fionna, we decided to give therapeutic riding a try. This was most successful too for Seven and he became a great favourite with many riders wanting him to be their horse. Retiring from that “job” coincided with the B.C. Disability Games in Maple Ridge, and at that time we all felt Seven officially would be retired. I rode him around the Grand Prix field all dressed in my Canada colours and with Burgi Rommel, who was judging that day, Marion Slatter Blitstein officiating and coach, Fionna Christensen, Seven received a standing ovation with many tearful but happy speeches and congratulations in his honour. He loved it all. Thanks, Seven, we all love you. HAPPY BIRTHDAY.

CKY MOUNTAIN O R SHOW JUMPING

THE CURTAIN CLOSES ON THE ROYAL WEST… By Eleanor Klawer with John Anderson …but 2014 was just the warm-up act! With the last big class of the tournament, The Spirit of the West Cup, there was immense satisfaction all around as organizer John Anderson declared “And that’s a wrap!” It was a huge undertaking, putting on a big indoor competition in a new facility for the first time, and the consensus is that Rocky Mountain Show Jumping got it right with all the fundamental requirements of a good event. The footing received great reviews — no small achievement when it had to be trucked in, laid in, groomed perfectly for nine days of showing, and then trucked out again! The horses concurred, as evidenced by the success of the Four Bar competition, where as many as eight horses www.gaitpost.com

made it to the final jump off round, jumping extremely well and confidently off the footing. The stabling was great, the prize money was incredible, and the competition ran to schedule with remarkable timeliness. On these factors, it was, John was told, as good as any indoor tournament in North America! Of the future, John said “It was great to knock the first indoor competition right out of the park, but there is more to do — I want to make it a Grand Slam at the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 of the World Series! Our focus this year was on the tournament, developing a prodRocky Mtn Show Jumping continued on page 22

John jokingly said, “If I screwed it up, I didn’t want crowds watching it! Next year, more emphasis will be on getting people in the seats. 22

December 2014

We plan on having over $500,000 in prize money next year! Calgary knows this sport, and hosting the Longines North American World Cup Qualifiers for 2015 – 2017 will bring even more top riders to Calgary, and more fans to the stadium.” Even though RMSJ has been operating for almost twenty years, they are still considered new kids on the block. People tend to be wary of what they don’t know, understandably. What the Royal West did for John Anderson and the future of show jumping in Western Canada is to bring huge credibility to the table. “People can now believe it when I say I am going to get something done!” says John proudly. John is appreciative of the people that had the faith and belief in what RMSJ could do, including Werner Deeg, an FEI 4*course designer at the top of the sport, who has been a solid supporter and did an outstanding job of building the big courses over the length of the tournament. John Taylor of Jump Canada came out to watch the Royal West, and has announced that the Jump Canada and CET Medal Finals are going to be packaged together, and rotated annually across the country. Peter Holmes designed the CET Medal courses, and as a course designer from the west coast with numerous Regional Finals under his belt, it was his first opportunity to work on the National Finals. The Medal Finals this year were exciting, as a West Coast rider, Haley Stradling, won in front of more hometown fans than would ever have been the case in Toronto. This is definitely going to be a tournament to watch in the future. Even though the crowds weren’t huge, the atmosphere was relaxed and fun, and the competition electric. With full stands, horses and riders will build off the energy, and the competition will only get better. With John’s plans and goals for the future of the Royal West and show jumping in Canada, there will be no resting on his laurels. Dynamic energy is the Alberta way, and John is 100% Albertan! The curtains may have closed on the 2014 Royal West, but behind the scenes the lines are being practiced and the plans being choreographed for an even better Royal West in 2015.

antina, a B.C.-bred Oldenburg mare by Sir Donnerhall out of the Brentano II mare Brize, is causing quite a stir. Dubbed Santina Ballerina by her many fans, this lofty beauty has won championships plus highest score of the show at each of her outings this year, including high score at Devonwood with an 80.4. Her year end winnings after her four shows are: 1. U.S.D.F. Northwest Regional Champion in both Training and First Level; 2. Idaho State Champion Training; 3. 1st place in U.S.A. Oldenburg Champion Training; 4. 3rd place U.S.A. Oldenburg Material Horse of the Year (4-5 yr olds); 5. U.S.D.F. 10th place out of /600 Dressage Horse of the Year; and 6. U.S.D.F. 10th place Material horse of the Year ( 4-5 yr olds ). One year ago, Santina was out riding the range chasing cattle and buffalo under Western tack. Her owner Elizabeth Smith of Bellevue, Idaho wanted her to have some general life experiences and some time to grow into herself, as she is so big. Then, on November

www.gaitpost.com

1st, 2013, Santina came into Dressage training under the careful and skillful hands of Nadine Schwartsman of Les Bois Dressage in Boise, Idaho. The pair haven’t looked back since. Nadine says, “This girl just wants to be a Dressage horse and the work is easy and fun for her. She is naturally smart with a lovely attitude, ‘exquisite movement’ (to quote one of her judges), and a natural balance that is surprising for a young horse that stands 18.2 hh.” With Nadine being such a tall and elegant rider, she fits Santina’s height perfectly and the picture they make is breathtaking! Nadine also brings in Arthur Kottas (of Spanish Riding School fame) from Vienna every few months to keep their training moving along the correct path. There is a positive side of this story for B.C. breeders as well. Nadine’s husband, Roman, has been heard numerous times chatting at the various shows, “I’m never going to Europe again to buy horses, I’m going to B.C.!” Santina is now poised to follow in the hoof prints of her famous aunt Brentina, (who lives less than five miles down the road), elegantly trotting right out of Idaho, hopefully onto the world stage eventually.

The jump-off was a thriller, and Allen’s performance was described by many as one of those “I was there!” moments in the history of any sport. Dutchman Maikel van der Vleuten cut every corner he could, and when he stopped the clock on 35.22 seconds it seemed that surely that was as quick as they could go. But Allen has one of

MCLain Ward aCES intErnationaL diviSion at CSi4*-W toronto, thE royaL horSE ShoW November 11, 2014: Often, equestrian sport is decided in mere fractions. Tenths, or even hundredths of seconds are not unusual deciding factors at the uppermost levels. McLain Ward won the $34,000 Jolera International Jumper class by more than four seconds over his closest rival, Jessica Springsteen. Following a fantastic “all-Canadian” opening weekend at the Royal Horse Show, the prestigious international division began. Twenty horse and rider combinations tackled the track, set by Guilherme Jorge of Brazil, whose subtle angles and exact placement of jumps somehow managed to create a course which was both twisty and turny, yet wide open and galloping all at the same time. “I tried to give a few options to the riders in the turns but also in the strides and gallops,” explained Jorge following the class. “The first class this afternoon also had some horses which will go tomorrow in the World Cup, so we are already building up from 1.45m this afternoon to 1.50m tonight. But the ones on top tonight really tried to go fast as well. McLain is always a very fast rider.” www.gaitpost.com

Adding to the “burn pile” out back will clearly be the skinny fence eight, the undoing of many riders, falling for nearly one third of the riders. Many went fast, but not many went fast and left the jumps up — the critical combination.

Although the pair has only been together since February, the synergy is already evident, having won a good Grand Prix in Washington as well as jumping well in the Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows this fall. “It did seem like he was a bit of ‘overkill’ for this class tonight,” laughed Ward, praising his compact, catlike partner; “but it really helped out at the Canadian Flag jump following the inside turn — he really made a hell of a move to get over it!” “I had the inside turn to the fifth jump in my original course walk plan and I knew it was doable. As I was coming up to the ring I was mentally flipping back and forth as to whether it was necessary or not though. But when Conor did it then it changed the situation.” Not only did he jump clean, he did it in an incredible time of 57.36 seconds. Springsteen was his closest rival, clocking in at 61.82 seconds. Third went to this afternoon’s winner and the winner of this class last year, Ireland’s Conor Swail, finishing on 62.34 seconds. Springsteen, of Colt’s Neck, NJ, comes into The Royal hot off three big wins indoors in Washington, including the puissance competition with Stone Hill Farm’s Lisona, her mount for the evening. It should come as no surprise that they handled the class just fine — their winning height of the puissance wall was six feet, ten inches. “She can jump anything you point her at!” proclaimed Springsteen broadly. “Laura (Kraut), my coach said not to go crazy, not to be frantic or hectic. She did all the tight turns easily tonight, and felt amazing. I’m really happy.” Earlier in the day, Conor Swail took first in the $20,000 International Power and Speed with Susan Grange’s Game Ready. “Coming into The Royal my three horses feel really good,” said Swail. “Game Ready jumped a lovely round today, the course really suited him. There were some tight turns and rollbacks and www.gaitpost.com

he is very good at those. He turns very quickly and jumps across the jump fast. So I knew going in it was very winnable.” Last year’s Leading International Rider, Swail actually injured himself just prior to the Big Ben class in 2013, but still considers The Royal a “lucky show” for himself. “Even though I was injured last year, the horses really like it here and I really like it here. It’s one of my favourite shows of the year. And it’s always nice to start well here, it’s nice that between the three horses it feels like every class I have a chance to win. That’s a great feeling.” Haley Stradling Captures Jump Canada Medal Final November 11, 2014: Haley Stradling of Aldergrove, B.C., won the Jump Canada Medal Final on November 11, 2014, during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. hawk Canadian Show Jumping Championships and Horseware Indoor Eventing. The energy was palpable and the competition fierce. Records fell as the previous champions of each division were dethroned. Captain Canada, Ian Millar of Perth, ON, is no stranger to pressure, having been crowned the Canadian Champion now for the eleventh time, and having competed at a record ten Olympic games over the span of his career. Millar managed to maintain his top place finish through three rounds of jumping, accumulating just one time fault in the process. Millar entered the Championship as the odds-on favourite, the clear one-to-beat in the field of 23. “It’s never easy to do,” stated Millar emphatically at the conclusion of the evening. “I’ve been second a bunch of times too. But when you’re expected to win — it puts the pressure on. It’s easier to be coming from behind when nobody has expectations.” Having competed so extensively and so successfully for so long, Millar has a unique perspective and ‘long vision’ for the class and for The Royal, as it relates to the development of future Canadian Team riders. “The Greenhawk Canadian Championships are a great opportunity to showcase our national riders and give them a chance to get in the ‘big part’ of our sport. It was a full house here tonight, with good sponsors and serious prize money. The format of the competition with the last ten coming back — there’s definitely pressure there and everybody feels it. And that’s how you learn to ride on a Nations Cup team,” Millar explained. When asked about his history at the Royal specifically, Millar drew closer and softened his voice, just a little. “I’ve been competing at the Royal since at least the late sixties… It never gets old. It really is one of the best indoor competitions in the world. It has it’s own character with such a strong agricultural underpinning - and it’s such a family event. We had a little spook in the corner, which caught me off guard, but otherwise I was happy with my test and happy with my horse.” “I can’t wait to ride my freestyle tomorrow,” added Pavicic. “It is a super fun Freestyle with

Riding Pop Art (Amsterdam X Cabochon), a 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Moreen Nicoll and Rusty Holzer, Jill Irving of Moncton, N.B., finished in third spot with a score of 67.367%. Rounding out the top four was Brittany Fraser of New Glasgow, N.S. riding Countess (Don x Solos), her 12-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, earning a final score of 65.733%. ing his 17 years, the big chestnut gelding who carried his rider to a double of series victories in 2011 and 2012 and who was runner-up at the opening leg of the series in Odense, Denmark two weeks ago, produced a lovely performance to post the highest score of 80.300 in the Grand Prix Freestyle. But the Dutch duo, who also claimed team and individual Freestyle bronze at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy two months ago, were closely followed by Germany’s Fabienne Lutkemeier and D’Agostino FRH in runner-up spot while another former FEI World Cup Dressage double-champion, Germany’s Ulla Salzgeber, slotted into third with Herzruf’s Erbe. There were some very bright lights shining, with an eye-catching performance from fourthplaced Danielle Heijkoop and Kingsley Siro for The Netherlands and a strong result for Sweden’s Patrik Kittel partnering the promising 10-year-old mare Deja who finished fifth. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season so far, however, has been the emergence of Denmark’s Agnete Kirk Thinggaard and the 11-yearold Jojo AZ as a real force to be reckoned with. The pair, who finished fourth in the Dutch Championship earlier this year, lined up sixth in round one at Odense, and they showed that was no fluke when doing exactly the same this evening when, once again, they left some very big names in their wake. Such is their success-rate of late, that they now share the top of the Western European Leaderboard alongside tonight’s winners with a total of 37 points to date. The Danish rider combines her sporting ambition with a great deal of common sense, and the 31-year-old, who has only returned to competition after an eight-year absence while rearing her three young children, set tonight’s first serious target with a mark of 77.400 when last to go before the judging break. Together, Thinggaard and Jojo AZ presented a Freestyle that was a pleasure to watch, including rock-solid piaffe, seamless transitions and tremendous symmetry with the musical score. www.gaitpost.com

Last time out they finished sixth behind Hans Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Flirt. Tonight the Dutch pair had to settle for ninth place despite some very nice work from the 13-year-old mare. Thinggaard remained at the head of affairs until Patrik Kittel threw down a mark of 77.850 with Deja, thanks in no small measure to the Swedish rider’s proficient production of clockwork passage. With three now left to go, Germany’s Salzgeber raised the bar when posting 79.325 with Herzruf’s Erbe, the horse with which she finished third at the Reem Acra Final in Leipzig, Germany in 2011. But she was immediately demoted by Cornelissen and Parzival who bounced through their always-captivating routine and finished with their usual flourish to score 80.300. Only Lutkemeier and D’Agostino could spoil their party now, and the German pair very nearly succeeded when earning a mark of 80.050 for a lovely test during which the 14-year-old gelding maintained an attractive outline. Cornelissen talked about how she keeps this great horse in such good shape at this late stage in his career. “I try to do as much of his work outdoors as I can, on the racetrack and in the woods, doing piaffe and passage, that’s how I train him now rather than in the arena, although of course sometimes you have to go in the arena, especially before a competition. One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of the new Calaveras County Perpetual Trophy (by artist Olva Stewart Pharo) to the very first US Dressage Finals Grand Prix Freestyle Adult Amateur Champion, Janne Rumbough of Palm Beach, Fla. The crowd went wild and clapped to the beat of Rumbough’s Mary Poppins-themed music as her gray PRE gelding Junior (by Gaucho III x La Nina by Brioso VI) seemed to relish the electric atmosphere of Alltech Arena, earning a winning score of 70.708% over fellow Region 3 competitor Aileen Daly (Aiken, S.C.) who rode her Hanoverian gelding Windsong (Weltmeyer x Lara by Laurie’s Crusader) to second place with 65.250 It may have taken North Forks Cardi four days to travel across the country from Battle Ground, Wash. Nobody told him that he’s only 14.3 hands!” said Wisdom. “All he has to do is go out there and be the rock star that he knows he is. And you saw what happens! He has an ego the size of Texas. His round was far from equitation, but it was certainly effective. “After walking the course tonight I really thought it was going to ride a lot smoother than last night, more like a little hunter round!” laughed Maynard ruefully. “But once you get in there, and the crowd is bigger and the lights are dimmed and they’re playing the music but you can’t even hear the music… You just get going, you try to get all the right distances but I just had the reins on the buckle and was really ‘in the back seat’ just trying to steer!” Maynard explained that although it was a tad erratic from a steering perspective, he never doubted whether his horse would jump or not. “I felt pretty confident I was going to get the turns, but the triple bar caught him by surprise. I saw a distance coming out of the turn and I knew he wouldn’t see it until the last stride. he world-famous Calgary Stampede Park hosted over 400 horses from around the world to compete in the brand new state of the art indoor facility at the Agrium Western Event Centre. Hosted by the Rocky Mountain Show Jumping management team and the Calgary Stampede, the Inaugural Royal West presented 10 days of elite equestrian competition for spectators and competitors alike. The Royal West offered the premium VIP experience for the show’s generous sponsors and their glamorous guests in luxury suites overlooking the stadium, and on Saturday, October 25th, the Royal West hosted a glitzy Derby Gala in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The Inaugural Royal West Tournament kicked off the first night with a vast turnout of

thirty-seven FEI riders competing in the $40,000 Norton Rose Fulbright CSI** Cup. Tamie Phillips took the lead early on in the class and held it throughout with a blazing fast time of 64 seconds and change aboard her nine-year-old mare Cat Balou. Canadian Olympian Jill Henselwood, one of Royal West’s most decorated FEI riders, had a great evening finishing second aboard Bolero HX and fifth aboard her second mount Quidam Blue, setting herself up to be in a great position heading into the next rounds of competition. Beda Wachter and On the Rocks closed out the top three with the clock stopping just milliseconds behind the top two riders. Internationally, Venezuela was well represented in the results with Andres Rodriguez and Caballito finishing fourth.

Cat Balou and Tamie went eighth in the order of 37 horses and managed to hold the winning time throughout the entire class. “I went early in the class and my original plan was to put in an efficient fast ride, but not to use her up for the upcoming week of classes. I ended up being a bit lucky as other people rode a bit faster but had rails here and there to add to their time. I think it was a good strategy, in the end it really paid off.” Thirty-six horses competed in round one of the Cup class with fourteen jumping clear, making it to the second round jump off. Course designer Werner Deeg set a technical track that caught many riders in the challenging triple combination. The second evening of competition at the Royal West Tournament ended in victory for Jill Henselwood and Quidam Blue in the $40,000 SynOil Energy Services CSI2* Cup. Henselwood and Quidam Blue, rose to the occasion, securing the Cup class win. “I thought that tonight’s course was a little more technical and that he’s starting to stretch us a little bit, which is great for the development of our athletes. It was a really good Show Jumping event, it pushed us to go fast in the jump off!” Henselwood knows how to prepare for the structure of a series competition. “Any championship that you do is such good practice for when it’s an Olympic games or a Pan American games. There is just that little bit of pressure that your performance stays consistent, that you put on top scores every day, not every second day.” World’s Judgement and Lisa Carlsen placed second with two clear round performances. Henselwood’s student, Jaclyn Duff and Pater Noster finished in a close third place finish. Caballito and Andres Rodriguez kept it consistent with their second fourth place finish in the series. The Final phase of the Royal West International Championship series concluded with an exciting win for Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez and Caballito. Securing the win in the $40,000 Kubota Canada & Tractorland Cup pushed Rodriguez to the top of the leaderboard and a silver medal podium finish in the series overall. www.gaitpost.com

Winning the first phase on Thursday and then to win overall in my hometown is just such a great feeling. I am so impressed with my horse and her performance this week. This show is only going to get bigger, and I can’t wait to see where it goes in the future.” Canadian Olympian Jill Henselwood and Quidam Blue once again put in a fast performance with just a rail in the jump off capturing the Bronze Medal in the series. With their sights set on big international competitions coming up, particularly the 2015 Pan American games, Henselwood felt the Royal West was the perfect opportunity to develop and train her string of horses for international success. the developing rider championships The developing rider tour is heavily sup-

Peninsula Riversong finished first and fourth to claim the overall title in their age category. Dereusa S owned by John Van Den bosh and ridden by Femke Van den Bosch put in a solid performance ending up third in both classes. Rounding out the day in the highly competitive Seven/Eight Year Old Division was Rabenschwartz owned and ridden by Patrick Billes. Rabenschwartz won the first class and finished third for a combined score high enough to be awarded the championship in the category. Carousel’s Bling, owned by Carousel Ridge and ridden by Shauna Cook, narrowly missed winning overall with an impressive first and second place finish. Kyle King aboard Paul Politeski’s talented 10 year old gelding Quigley, claimed the victory in the ACTC $33,500 CSI3* Classic sponsored by Dagmar Fortmuller. Twenty-nine riders attempted the technical track set by course designer Werner Deeg. With such a strong set of riders competing at the Royal West, Werner set a fast technical track that challenged riders to start with a big open canter to clear the wide-set triple bar placed at the beginning of the course, and then to reorganize for the closer set related distances at the latter part of the track.

Quigley and King have a big future in the International ring and future FEI competitions. “Quigley is a funny guy! He’s a bit quirky, he was fighting me a bit in the warm up, but thankfully didn’t show any of that in the ring. Quigley is green for a ten year old, but I think he’s the horse of my career. He’s one of the scopiest animals I’ve ever sat on, I think he’s truly a meter sixty horse.” Dagmar Fortmuller generously sponsored the event, and echoed King’s praise of the new venue, and Royal West President John Anderson. “It’s a great facility! I very much enjoyed it, this was a great showing of the sport here tonight. I would’ve loved to see John win, he was close with the third place finish on Terrific, I think they tried very hard tonight.” Tamie Phillips and Cat Balou finished second in the class, followed by Royal West’s own John Anderson aboard Terrific. Southern Pride and Karen Cudmore finished fourth, with Jill Henselwood and Bolero HX rounding out the top five. The Running Fox CET National Medal Finals wrapped up at the Royal West Tournament with a newly crowned Champion for 2014; British Columbia’s Haley Stradling! Haley is trained by Laura Balisky, Brent Balisky and Laura Jane Tidball and credits her support team for her win aboard her best friend’s horse, Stanley SM. “I want to thank her for trusting me with him and allowing me to take him here to the Royal West. Stanley performed amazing, I couldn’t ask for any more from him. He really put himself together for me and kept himself going every single day.” Running Fox has sponsored the CET Medal

Finals for 14 years, providing Walsh halters and coolers to the top eight, as well as a Childeric saddle to the overall Champion. Owner, Debbie Smith made the trip down to support the program at the Royal West. “It’s so nice to be appreciated! The competitors came a long way for this competition and did a great job. I’m so happy for Haley Stradling for capturing the win, and I’m really proud to be the sponsor of this class.” 2014 Reserve Champion, Chelsea Walsh won both the first phase and the jumping phase today, but just missed out on the Championship title after her ride in the final four ride off. Chelsea is trained by Erin Taylor. Sixteen riders competed over the two phases of the CET Finals, hailing from four different regions across Canada. The National CET Finals are one of the most prestigious Medals in Canada for an aspiring equitation rider to win. RMSJ President, John Anderson, expressed his gratitude to the Jump Canada committee for allowing a Western indoor venue to host the Medal Finals. Zilversprings and Elizabeth Gingras claimed victory in the $33,500 Miller Thompson Open Jumper CSI3* Classic Thursday evening in front of a sizeable crowd at the Royal West Tournament. Gingras and Zilversprings competed successfully the first week of the Royal West, but kept just missing out on securing a victory until the Miller Thompson Classic. “It feels surreal! I’m very, very excited. Last week he jumped clear in all of his first rounds Royal West Wrap-Up continued on page 44

Royal West Wrap-Up continued from page 43 but had a rail in the jump offs. It’s also our first major FEI victory together! It’s extra exciting to jump double clear today and to also mark our first career win together.” Twenty-six riders negotiated the technical track set by Werner Deeg. The fast paced track caught many riders in the first round, especially at the technical line to the triple combination coming home to the gate. The course pushed riders to negotiate the course quickly, something that Gingras is not normally comfortable doing. “I think that the practice from showing here last week has helped me win today. I mean this is why I came here; to practice. I wanted to learn to be a faster rider and to be better for next season. I tend to like to stay out in the corners; to make sure I’m straight and set up for the next jump, but that’s not something that you can do here if you want to win. I really wanted to learn to be a faster rider indoors, and the tracks here have pushed me to learn that skill.” Zilversprings and Gingras are a relatively new partnership in the FEI competition ring, but have really blossomed together at the inaugural Royal West. spirit of the west cup The final evening of the inaugural Royal West came to a close with Elizabeth Gingras and Zilversprings winning the first annual $100,000 Spirit of the West CSI3* Cup presented by Big Interactive and C&V Portable Accommodations. Fresh off of their Thursday evening win in the Miller Thompson FEI Classic, Zilversprings 44

and Gingras put in a confident fast double clear ride over the technical and fast paced track set by course designer Werner Deeg. The field of twenty-seven horses squared off with only six jumping clear and making it into a fast paced jump off. The daunting track caught many of the riders at the beginning of the class as fifteen horses jumped the first round before a clear round ridden by Tamie Phillips and Cat Balou. Royal West President John Anderson finished second in the class by just a fraction of a second aboard Terrific. The Leading Canadian Rider award was based off of the combined results over the two weeks. Based on the points of the combined six FEI classes, John Anderson and Terrific won the leading Canadian rider title and the prize, a Ford Escape. John and Tournament Manager Caroline Jones ran a tight ship that resulted in a fantastic two weeks of Show Jumping. “I want everyone to know that this was just a dress rehearsal! Now that we’ve been in the venue and understand the intricacies of running an event here, we can tailor the event in coming years to be even better. In 2015 the Royal West Tournament will be back with more prize money, and more bums in seats. Building up our crowd of spectators, is what’s really going to make this whole event electric!” With the addition of the Longines World Cup Qualifier to the Royal West, in the next three years coming the Tournament is going to become a destination for International FEI competition. The RMSJ team would like to thank our generous sponsors, our exhibitors and everyone who made the event possible. For John Anderson there really is only one thing left to say “As they say in Tinseltown…. That’s a wrap!” developing rider championship Results 0.75M Jumper: Gold: Takoma / Jacey Boulanger; Silver: Miss Baxter / Taylor Fielding; Bronze: All that Jazz / Hayleigh Hollingworth. 0.85M Jumper: Gold: Wise Guy / Austin Krawitt; Silver: All that Jazz / Hayleigh Hollingsworth; Bronze: Sun West Orion / Emily Eades. ec coaching system:

what the heck are ‘rubrics’? foxcroft farm

Continuing our discussion of the E.C. Coaching system and the evaluation process.

D

uring the last decade, at EC coaching meetings, there has been much discussion on rubrics. At first, being unfamiliar with the term, I (as Master Evaluator for B.C.) did my research in order to understand. I have since embraced the concept! The Oxford dictionary defines rubrics as “explanatory words”. This sounded good but I needed to know more so I went to everyone’s friend, Google. Here I learned much more: In education terminology, scoring rubric means “a standard of performance for a defined population”. They are to support student self-reflection and selfassessment as well as providing communication between assessor and those being assessed. They are typically linked to learning objectives and

46

December 2014

are used to assess or communicate about performance or tasks. A scoring rubric is an attempt to communicate expectations of quality around a task. Because the criteria are public, a scoring rubric allows teachers and students alike to evaluate criteria, which can be complex and subjective. It is aimed at fair and accurate assessment, fostering understanding and indicating a way to proceed with subsequent learning/teaching. In a nutshell, what this means for coaching candidates, is that all the information is there for them. There are no surprises! One of the main changes in the EC system is the concept of “competency based”. That is good news in anyone’s book! Another shift is that the focus has become on teaching/instructing (Instructor of Beginners) and coaching (Competition Coach, CC Specialist and High Performance). This also makes sense. A good instructor/coach needs to be a) competent at the skill and b) able to teach or coach the skill. So — how to prepare for this coaching evaluation? At first glance it can seem like a daunting task! But it need not be. The first step is to make sure that you are competent in the skills and the level or “context” in which you want to teach/coach. That is usually best done under the guidance of a certified coach. Each person is an individual so it is impossible to say how long this will take. There are many variables, such as dedication and work ethic (how many times during a week you ride, how many lessons you take), talent and skill of both you and your chosen coach — remembering that “perfect practise makes perfect” — the horse, etc. The second step is to work under a mentor who can help you learn to teach or coach. This can be more challenging for many. Ironically,

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

often the most gifted riders find teaching to be a difficult skill to master. Good riding came so easy to these top riders, due to their natural talent and instincts. Coaching, with competition in mind, brings many more challenges. For example, what should a coach do differently at a horse show than they might do while training? How does the coach know if the student “gets it”? Obviously good performance is an indication that the rider understands — but what if the performance is not good? What if the rider/horse does not perform well? Does that mean that the rider doesn’t understand, or might there be other factors to consider? What does the coach do under these circumstances? If you are considering working towards certification (or changing “contexts”), please join us on Thursday, Jan 29th 2015, 7 pm at HCBC office for a free information session. Campbell Valley Equestrian Society Needs Your Help! Submitted by CVES

plurge on a $20 annual membership. There is no other membership around that gives you so much for so little. We build and maintain the riding rings, round pen, bleachers, and cross country course at Campbell Valley Park for the benefit of any and all horse (and some dog) people wishing to use these facilities. When we were asked for a round pen, we built one. It only takes money (and the approval of Metro Vancouver Parks!). Thanks to our hardworking volunteers the rings are regularly harrowed, the fencing checked for damage and repaired, cross country and stadium jumps are maintained, Cross Country schooling days are scheduled over the spring and summer months as well as Dressage schooling shows and a Two Phase Event in September. Our biggest Event is our annual (for the last 25 years) August Horse Trials which brings riders from all over the Pacific Northwest for three days of fun and competition.

56

December 2014

This takes more money! Our funding comes partly from grants – sounds easy – ask and you’ll get – not so easy, in reality. The grants we do get are directly related to our membership numbers. More members mean more money to maintain and improve the facilities. We offer discounts to our members on Dressage shows, Cross Country schooling days and our August Horse Trials, which more than covers the cost of a membership. If you have ever used the riding rings or round pen to train or school your young horses, English or Western, done relaxing trail rides or galloped across the rolling fields, you should support our ongoing work by becoming a member. If your friends and family aren’t riders but sit in the bleachers to watch you, they can become supporting members for just $5.00 per year. Help support our efforts and become a member. The membership form is available online at www.cves.ca — easy!

HTBC YOUNG RIDERS CLINIC he HTBC Young Riders clinic was a great success. The clinic was held at the wonderful Windsor Stables over two days with Jumping and Dressage lessons both days. In the six lesson groups, there were people from all levels attending, hoping to get some winter homework. For me, the day started early with a Dressage lesson with the lovely Jane Stone. We started right from the basics with everyone gradually increasing the difficulty until we were working on movements from our level. There was lots to learn with some especially interesting tips from Jane, out of the research of Andrew Maclean. One in particular had a very quick and positive effect with my horse in the lengthen stride, which we had struggled with previously. The second lesson of the day was jumping with Maeve Drew. We started with grids the first day and courses the second day. There was plenty educational work on pace and setting the horse up for the fence using Maeve’s five rules: 1. Direction and line, 2. Pace, 3. Balance which goes hand in hand with 4. Rhythm, and 5. Timing. The five steps really seemed to improve people’s (including my own) approaches and inevitably jump. Both the coaches were excellent to work with and gave very good pointers which we all learned from. A big thanks to Maeve and Jane for coaching! Also a huge thanks to Windsor Stables for the use of their beautiful facility. There were three nice rings and tons of room for parking and walking horses around. The 20' by 60' indoor worked wonderfully for the Dressage, and the large outdoor was great for the Jumping. Also, the use of the hog fuel ring made warm up before lessons so much easier.

I would also like to thank Diane Spencer for helping to set up the clinic. Overall it was a great success and a wonderful learning experience. Now we all just have to keep it up all winter! — Respectfully submitted by Mareesa and Dayna Kelly

As the national team coach of Canadian ParaDressage Team, Taylor coached Lauren Barwick to individual silver and bronze medal finishes at the Games, riding Off to Paris, Equine Canada’s 13-year-old Oldenburg mare. Taylor is a seasoned international Dressage competitor who became involved in ParaDressage when she donated her own Grand Prix horse, Dior, to Barwick to ride at the 2004 Paralympic Games. Named as a national team coach since 2007, Taylor has become an integral part of the ongoing success of the Canadian paraDressage program and team, which currently is ranked sixth in the world. “I am really proud to accept this award on behalf of the whole Canadian Team — especially my fellow Team coach, Mary Longden,” said Taylor, who had to be NCCP certified to be eligible for the award. “It takes a hard-working, focused group of people to help the team members to do their job — in this instance, win — at the world level.” Discipline Reports continued on page 60

vaulting report FEI World Cup Vaulting 2014/15: surprise win for Austria’s pas-de-deux dynamo in Munich Excited fans at the opening qualifier of the FEI World Cup Vaulting 2014/15 in Munich’s iconic Olympic Hall were treated to a double Austrian victory today from Lisa Wild and pasde-deux dynamo Stefanie Millinger and Evelyn Freund, with Viktor Brüsewitz scoring the home win for Germany. The Salzburg-based Millinger and Freund, who came sixth at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014, stole the show with a nearperfect African-themed routine, pushing their compatriots Jasmin Lindner and Lukas Wacha the pas-de-deux world and FEI World Cup champions — into second place. “We can’t believe it. It is our first World Cup victory, and it feels so good”, said Freund, standing with Millinger, both with tears in their eyes. “We were counting on being in the top three, but this result is just amazing”, added their coaches Marissa Jöbstl and Roswita Haigermoser. And they had even more reason to be happy another star from their club UVT Salzburg WalsSchullergut secured the best result in the female individual competition. Lisa Wild had spectators on the edge of their seats with her backflip off her horse Robin, lunged by Nina Rossin. She stunned judges and fans when she first revealed a backflip landing back on her horse at the FEI World Vaulting Championships 2012 in Le Mans.

Discipline Reports continued from page 60 She left the Munich spectators in awe again at her talents, and with her clean performance in the Olympic Hall, she proudly claimed her top spot. “This is a really great day for me!”, said Wild, who unfortunately did not qualify for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy this summer. “I’m so happy for her, because she has shown a lot of self-confidence here in Munich after a difficult season”, said her coach Jöbstl. “Now she has proved she is back at the top level of the sport.” The recent rule change to extend the oneminute routines for individual vaulters by 20 seconds was welcomed by Viktor Brüsewitz, world number three, who was ecstatic with his first FEI World Cup Vaulting qualifier win in Munich. Vaulting on Adlon with lunger Alexander Hartl (GER), he said: “I will never forget Munich, because this is my very first World Cup victory, and thanks to the rule change I had more time to enjoy it!”
