TIDBITS
New Year’s Bits
As the calendar turns over to the new year, we cast our eyes forward (past all this cold weather!) to an exciting year ahead, which includes the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. Tidbits wishes all our readers and beloved horses the very best for 2014. Setting the Bar to New Heights Ali Buchanan has shared the exciting news that Laura and Brent Balisky of Thunderbird Show Stables have recently completed all the required components to receive “High Performance Coach” certification with Equine Canada, under the recently revamped EC National Coaching Certification Program for Show Jump-

ing. The only other coach in Canada who is High Performance certified under the new program is Canada’s long time Show Jumping Team Chef d’Equipe Terrance (Torchy) Millar. In order to be eligible for the certification, coaches must have results from students at the FEI level, which Laura and Brent have in spades. Olympian Tiffany Foster was the pair’s protégé, training with them for several years before she began to work with Eric Lamaze. Of course, Laura herself is an Olympian, having represented Canada at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 with Lavendel 48. Within their own family, Laura and Brent have developed the considerable riding and coaching skills of niece Laura Jane (L.J.), who is currently ranked 16th on the North American World Cup League for the 2013/14 World Cup season with Prim Tidbits continued on page 8

Also having recently achieved a coaching milestone of her own, L.J. completed all the requirements to be certified as an EC Competition Coach in the discipline of Hunter/Jumper. Though some of us might prefer not to be reminded of the passage of time, it’s an impressive fact that Laura and Brent have been coaching and training Hunter and Jumper horses and riders from the grass roots to the international arena for over 30 years.

Over 100 auditors attended the day-long educational event, in which riders demonstrated the 2014 FEI Tests, while being coached by Ashley Holzer, Canada’s most accomplished Olympic Dressage athlete. FEI 4* judge Lorraine MacDonald provided live commentary from the judge’s perspective as the riders performed their tests. Courtenay Fraser and her horse Birkegarden’s Lukas rode through the new Grand Prix Special test for the spectators. “Lorraine used the loud speakers to provide a real time description of her judging,” says Courtenay. “As a rider, I found this method extremely helpful. With the judging verbalized as it was taking place, I was able to break down each movement a little more definitively. I’m certain that the spectators found this method very helpful as well.” Courtenay was equally impressed with Ashley’s coaching of the riders throughout the day. “I was also able to benefit from Ashley’s direct instruction,” she says. “I felt both Lukas and I improved as a result of Ashley’s teaching.” Courtenay felt that she went away from the symposium with a “clear understanding of the homework” she and

Jessie Fraser, Equestrian Director at QMS, says, “our team of coaches and students have already enjoyed successes this year.” At the recent Cowichan winter Series, Amber Heard, Jasleen Grewal, Miranda LeBeuf, Christine Coels and Lauren Bailey all came home with championships in their divisions. Several others, including Rita Liu, Kelsey Towe and Sofia Campos, were Reserve Champions. The students have also had a richness of education opportunities; Barb Soley and Richard Keller have both given clinics in Duncan this fall. “It has been an exciting start to the year,” says Fraser. eXpanDing their therapeutic reach The North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association (NFTRA) has received a big boost from Telus Vancouver Community Board, one which will enable NFTRA to launch a year-long youth program called ‘Developing Resilient Youth through the Horse-Human Connection’. The program will partner young people with horses in a safe, supportive, nurturing and fun environment. Among the goals of the program is to help youth develop effective communication skills, as well as to build confidence and trust. “Herd dynamics are powerful metaphors for leadership, teamwork, nonverbal communication, setting boundaries, and for illustrating group and family dynamics,” says Sharolyn Wandzura of Ears Forward Coaching. NFTRA will be taking its first group of students into the new program in 2014.

Mike Osinski of Olympia, WA has earned his FEI three star judging status, which is equivalent to what used to be called “I” status. Another recent promotion was earned by Kari McClain, another trainer and judge in Olympia, who is now a USDF ‘S’ ranked Dressage judge. Wondering why some people get into Tidbits while you don’t? Ms. Murdoch first became a member of equine canada in 1952. By 1989, had become a certified equine canada jumping judge working events in Ontario, and by 1992 was a qualified steward in Jumping and Dressage; serving as the FeI General Stewart for Dressage for many years. Over the past 24 years she has represented canada at both ec sanctioned and FeI events, her most recent being the 2013 cornerstone Spring into Dressage this past June. “Maggie was a mentor in our equestrian family, and a leader in our FeI education through the early years. However, I shall recall Maggie for her wicked sense of humour. She could tell a story and just leave you giggling. She had the gift of putting you at ease, a great asset when dealing with nervous competitors! She will be sorely missed,” stated Jan Stephens, FeI canadian Steward General, for Jumping and eventing. Ms. Murdoch was also an FeI Level 2 Para-equestrian Dressage Steward. She was chief Steward at the 2006 Pacific Rim International Para-equestrian Dressage competition held in Langley, British columbia as well as the 2010 WindReach International Paraequestrian Dressage competition held in Ashburn, Ontario. In 2007, Ms. Murdoch joined the canadian Paraequestrian committee (cPec), and remained a valued www.gaitpost.com

She was also a member of the Para-equestrian Officials committee from 2006-2010. “Maggie was an incredible staunch supporter of equestrian sport in canada, and will be very missed by many in the community. Maggie was always a steadying figure whose integrity, depth of knowledge and experience always proved to be invaluable, particularly to those fortunate enough to have worked and mentored with her throughout the years. The equestrian community owes Maggie a great debt of gratitude,” commented Kerri McGregor, member of the Board of Directors, equine canada. Ms. Murdoch will be remembered for her passion, commitment and contributions to furthering excellence in canada’s equestrian sport. Headline News continued on page 12

ported by Horse & Hound on December 16 and 17. The formidable pair won this competition at Olympia last year and Dujardin, who was shortlisted for The Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswoman of the Year earlier this month, will be hoping to repeat that feat. Amongst those bidding to spoil Dujardin’s Christmas party is Edward Gal (Glock’s Voice) and Hans Peter Minderhoud (Glock’s Romanov) from the Netherlands who are regulars at Olympia. Charlotte’s GB Teammate, Carl Hester will compete Fine Time 13, the horse with which he won the National Championships with in September. A notable absentee is Dujardin and Hester’s London 2012 Teammate, Laura Tomlinson (nee Bechtolsheimer). However, Tomlinson’s stable jockey and Reserve National Champion, Lara Griffith, makes her Olympia debut on Andretti H. The Top Three FEI-ranked Show Jumpers in the world Scott Brash (GB), Ben Maher (GB) and Ludger Beerbaum (GER) are all triple handed with horses in the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Leg, presented by H&M. Scotland’s Brash, who recently clinched the Longines Global Champions Tour title in Doha, elevating him to No.1 spot this week in the FEI world rankings brings Bon Ami, Hello Annie and Ursula XII to Olympia. Maher has Aristo Z, Diva II and his London 2012 superstar Tripple X III and will also be reunited with Noctambule Courcelle in the Alltech Christmas Puissance, on whom he won the famous competition in 2010 and 2012. Legendary Beerbaum brings his three top horses Carinou, Chiara 222 and Zinedine. Six of the world’s best drivers include three 2013 European team gold medallists, Koos de Ronde, Ijsbrand Chardon and Theo Timmerman from the Netherlands; two 2013 European team silver medallists from Germany, Daniel Schneiders and Michael Brauchle; and driving on a wild card is two time world gold medallist, four time World Cup Champion and current leader in the FEI Driver standings, Australia’s Boyd Exell. Saturday, November 2, during the CSI4*-W Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. Originally from Normandy, France, Candele became a Canadian citizen in 2009 and has dominated the Canadian Show Jumping Championships ever since, winning in 2010 aboard Pitareusa and in 2011 and 2012 with Game Ready. This year’s victory came aboard Showgirl, a 13-yearold Selle Français mare previously ridden by fellow Canadian Equestrian Team member Jonathan Asselin of Calgary, AB. The Royal Horse Show marked the first competition for the new pair. Showgirl was acquired specifically for Candele by a group of owners led by 2008 Olympic Champion Eric Lamaze. Despite their unfamiliarity with each other, Candele and Showgirl thrilled the crowd during the $25,000 Canadian Championship Phase I on Friday, November 1, stopping the clock in the speed class in a blistering 66.16 seconds while leaving all the rails in place. Their domination continued the next day in Saturday’s $50,000 Canadian Championship Phase II, where, as the leaders, they had the luxury of being the final competitors on course. The pair laid down another impressive fault-free performance in the opening round of the $50,000 class to maintain their lead. Advancing to the second round, despite a few close calls and hard rubs, Candele and Showgirl pulled out another clear round, claiming the Canadian Championship title with a perfect score of zero. Beth Underhill of Schomberg, ON, took home the Reserve Canadian Championship title aboard Viggo, her 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, with a combined score of 1.62 penalties. Viggo has only recently returned to competition after a full year off due to injury, and in his first indoor competition in nearly two years, put in three clean jumping efforts. Angela Covert of St. Lazare, QC, rounded out the top three with a total score of 4.33 penalties aboard Utan, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by the Eastwood Group. The Ziegler Family Named 2013 Jump Canada ‘Owner of the Year’ December 1, 2013: Jump Canada named the Ziegler family of Artisan Farms the ‘Owner of the Year’ for 2013. It is the second time that Jump Canada has bestowed the honour on the Ziegler family, who were also the recipients in 2011. Carlene and Andy Ziegler’s interest in Show Jumping www.gaitpost.com
first began when their daughter, Caitlin, started riding ponies at the age of four at a small barn outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As Caitlin’s riding progressed, so did the involvement of her parents. Today, Artisan Farms continues to support the riding careers of Andy and Caitlin, as well as sponsoring Canadian Olympians Eric Lamaze and Tiffany Foster. Horses owned by the Ziegler family represented the Canadian Show Jumping Team in four Nations’ Cup competitions in 2013, including in Wellington, Florida, where Foster produced double clear rounds riding Victor to lead Canada to a second place finish. Demonstrating their unfailing support, Artisan Farms purchased three new Grand Prix mounts for Lamaze and Foster in May 2013. Powerplay, a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding (Casall x Limbus), and Quelmec du Gery, a nine-year-old Selle Français gelding (Pamphile x Jasper), were purchased for 2008 Olympic Champion Lamaze, while Verdi III, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Hors La Loi II x Cantus) was acquired for Foster. Lamaze, riding Powerplay, and Foster, riding Verdi III, represented Canada in the Nations’ Cup competitions held during the Spruce Meadows ‘Continental’ and ‘Masters’ tournaments before traveling to CSIO5* Barcelona, Spain, to compete in the c1.5 million Furusiyya Nations’ Cup Final where Canada placed sixth among 18 countries vying for the inaugural title. Lamaze and Powerplay produced one of only two double clear performances in the Nations’ Cup Final over two demanding days of competition. “It is a great honour to be named the Jump Canada ‘Owner of the Year’ for the second time,” said Carlene Ziegler. “It is our pleasure to support Eric and Tiffany and to witness their successes for Team Artisan and Team Canada. We have very high hopes for our latest additions, Powerplay and Verdi III, and look forward to the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy.” 2013 Edition of L’Année Hippique Now Available November 29, 2013: The 2013 edition of L’Année HipHeadline News continued on page 14

is it psychological, or is it pain?
I
wish horses could talk, at least to tell us where they are hurting. Sometimes there can be clear indications, such as a severely inflamed area, inability to bear any weight on one limb, or rolling constantly in severe pain. Most of the time, however, signs are more subtle and only a very attentive owner or someone that knows the horse extremely well can tell that a horse may have a problem. When faced with a behavioural issue, a crucial question should always be asked: is it from pain? Even though it may not be the first thing that comes to mind, it should always be considered. This article will outline some behaviour that can indicate pain and when veterinary care may be required. 16
January 2014
Lethargy This is the horse that is just not quite right. No specific signs are necessarily noted but he doesn’t have as much energy or his usual attitude. This is a very important sign to recognize, monitor and investigate. It can certainly be due to overtraining and fatigue. It can also be the beginning of renal failure, stomach impaction or other severe illnesses or diseases. Sometimes horses will lose their appetite, which gets noticed rather quickly by owners if they don’t eat at all, but it sometimes goes unnoticed if they only eat less or take much longer to finish their food. Another great example is horses with Cushing’s disease. Owners often think that their horse is
Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag
www.gaitpost.com
“slowing down” from aging but once treated, they can regain a lot of energy and act like a young horse again. Canter problems Although they can be triggered by rider error, picking up the wrong lead frequently, switching leads behind or completely switching lead on the lunge line or with an experienced rider is often a sign of discomfort. On the first and last beats of the canter, there is a single leg in contact with the ground supporting the entire body weight (i.e. the right front and the left hind on the right lead canter) which does not happen in the trot where there are always two feet on the ground at a time. As a result, sometimes the canter feels completely different if you switch direction when it is painful on a single leg. This is sometimes expressed by the horse by bunny hopping, which can be described as cantering with both hind legs touching the ground almost simultaneously while roaching the back. This is done in an effort to share the weight between both hind legs and/or to relieve the pressure from the rider on the horse’s back. Jumping issues Some horses are known to refuse jumping obstacles. It can definitely be the rider’s fault or those scary flowers that are just not the same ones that you practiced with at home. But if a horse that consistently used to have clear rounds is all of a sudden refusing to jump for no apparent reason, it may be from apprehension due to the pain from any of the legs or back. In the same line of thinking, horses should jump straight or in the direction indicated by the rider. If they repeatedly jump crooked, this may also indicate a problem. Contact troubles A horse that has sharp points on his teeth digging in his cheeks can pull to one side, have trouble going to the contact or be fussy. Along the same idea, oral ulcers, pinches from the wrong bit or oral lacerations can cause the same signs. Head shaking syndrome can be very diswww.gaitpost.com
ruptive and make a horse un-rideable. TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) pain can also be responsible for contact problems. Although the head is where we point a finger first, neck pain, back pain, muscle stiffness and even lameness can also bring contact challenges. The fact that a horse has had an abnormal behaviour or gait for a long time doesn’t make it normal. It only means that the horse has been dealing or coping with it as best as he can. Sometimes low grade lamenesses may have been going on for several months or even years before they get noticed. It is usually not “the way the horse moves”. There are several other behavioural abnormalities which are too extensive to list, but include cold backs, pulling on one rein, being spooky or hyper reactive, kicking during meals, rearing, self-mutilation, etc. When faced with a behavioural problem, there are a few questions that your veterinarian will ask and knowing the answer will increase the chances of finding the root of the problem. Those include: when did you first notice the problem? Under what conditions does the problem occur, does it happen every time? Does it change if someone else handles the horse? What precedes the behaviour? Has it worsened lately or is it stable? If the behaviour problem occurs under saddle, is it in both directions? At all gaits? At the beginning of the ride? Does it get better as you ride? Of course some of these issues may be behavioural or training related and due to the personality of the horse or the horse/rider combination. Sometimes horses find their work hard and riders need to push them to achieve their athletic performance, but asking a horse in pain to perform a specific task may leave him resenting work and cause further problems down the road. In conclusion, horse owners need to know their horse very well and notice small behavioural changes or even realize that some of the long-time issues may be pain related. A horse does not have to be head-bobbing lame to feel pain and even a small amount of pain can cause

In trying the horse, it confirmed everything that we thought.” Zigali P S will join Lamaze’s current top string, which is lead by Powerplay, a nine-year-old Holsteiner gelding (Casall x Limbus), purchased by Artisan Farms in May of this year. With Powerplay, Lamaze enjoyed strong results at cSIO5* Spruce Meadows Masters in calgary, AB, and was one of two riders to produce a double clear effort in the c1,500,000 Furusiyya FeI Nations’ cup Final at cSIO5* Barcelona, Spain. “Powerplay is my leading horse, and we need to try to preserve him for next year’s World equestrian Games,” explained Lamaze, who has contested the past five consecutive World equestrian Games, winning the Individual Bronze Medal in 2010 with the great Hickstead. “In talking with Andy and carlene, they were very supportive. Once we realized what we had in Powerplay, we also realized that we need to aim him at major events and championships. Powerplay needs a back-up, and Zigali is capable of jumping at the same calibre. Having a second top horse will make Powerplay’s schedule a little easier, and allow me to do more shows. It makes it fun, and it makes it exciting!”

I
n Europe, Warmblood and Sport Horse stallions must first be approved by a “Verband” or Breed Registry to be able to breed and register any offspring. With the approval from the registry, the stallions must then perform a 30 or 70 day “test”. This test is to determine whether the stallion is of good character, rideable, has good gaits, good jumping form, and has the endurance to gallop and jump Cross Country. Each stallion must show adequate ability in all things to “pass”. The NA 70 Day Stallion test is held at Silver Creek Farm in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. At this time, there is only one 70 Day Test for all North American Sport Horse Stallions. This in itself is quite a journey for any stallion owner to embark on, for not only the cost, but the location as well, adds a tremendous element to the test. For the third year, Jennifer and Armin Arnoldt of Dreamscape Farm in Langley, BC have sent a stallion(s) to the test. This year they have much to celebrate as their homebred Fabian DSF 2008 Oldenburg (Freestyle x Oladaula x Heirarch) was the Champion Stallion www.gaitpost.com
of the test. Fabian DSF was purchased as a young FEI Stallion prospect by Martha Diaz (USA). She has developed him into an outstanding young stallion. This is the second North American Stallion by Freestyle (Florestan x SPS Paloma) that has been licensed at the NA test. In 2010, Farscape DSF, 2007 Westfalen (Freestyle x Pacific Sabra x Pacific Sunset) was the first NA bred and approved Westfalen Stallion. Farscape DSF was third overall in the 2010 test. Farscape DSF has been showing very successfully on the West Coast with many wins in the Hunter Ring. This year, Checkmate, 2009 Oldenburg (Check In x Rio Zeus x Zeus) had a very good test. He shows a fantastic “Hunter form” under saddle and in the chute. He was third in the jumping and sixth overall (at press time). Checkmate was one of three stallions licensed at the test this year with the Hanoverian Verband (Germany) and the American Hanoverian Society. Checkmate will begin his long journey home in a few days and get a well deserved vacation. — Submitted by Lynn Blake, Shadowridge Farm

Winter is upon us, no doubt about it. Even on the “temperate” West Coast, winter can bite, and preparation is the best prevention of all the cold-related problems that arise with horses and their management in sub-zero temperatures. Winter Check continued on page 22 www.gaitpost.com

Winter Check continued from page 21 WINTER BARN MANAGEMENT Check the weather channel often. If temperatures are going to drop below zero, or below your area’s norm by a significant amount, winter proof your barn. Close your loft doors and windows, start closing the exterior doors and keeping them shut, and close windows. Pay attention to ventilation. If your barn has adequate ventilation, your windows should not fog up, condensation should not cover everything, and your barn should not smell of ammonia. Open windows just enough to get the airflow to eliminate these problems. Pull your hoses inside after draining them, so you can use them easily when temperatures rise again (and find them when the snow falls!). Keep your horses inside to keep the barn temperature up and the water flowing. Turn out half the barn at a time, again to keep the barn warm. If you keep supplies (hay, bedding) outside, bring as much in ahead of time to make the work easier. Have de-icer on hand for your sidewalks and parking lot. Shovel paths to the manure pile and bin before using a wheelbarrow on them — then there is less ice, and a smoother surface for the next few days. If starting up heat22

ers in the tack room or lounge, make sure the dust has been blown off and nothing is stored close to the heat source. WINTER FEEDING Horses require more calories to maintain their body temperatures in cold weather. Keep in mind that the energy required might be balanced by less activity and more stall time, if they are kept indoors. The goal is to keep them healthy and rideable! Generally, in most barn situations, horses tend to need less grain, more water, and more hay. The hay should be given in small amounts frequently, or use a slow feeder to keep the gut active. The bonus with feeding more often is that they drink more frequently, and this helps keep the pipes from freezing. A wet mash or wetting their usual grain ration is a good way to jumpstart the digestive tract with fluids, and help prevent impaction colics. Horses in consistent exercise routines such as school horses have been shown to be at a lower risk of colic. A significant change in activity level will increase the risk of colic, so force yourself to get out there and ride your horse! Don’t park him until the temperature comes back up.

There are many suggestions for preventing snow balling up in their shoes, but it is best to ask what works best in your area. Indoor arenas can be harrowed frequently to prevent freezing, and to bring up the moister under-footing which will help keep dust down until sprinkling can be resumed. WinTer riding Bundle up! Use pocket warmers in your gloves — they come in adhesive thin packets for your toes as well. If going for a hack, use a quarter sheet to keep your horse’s haunches warm and out of the wind if he gets sweaty. Keep your head warm — use a thin toque under your helmet. WinTer TraveL So you have to haul your horse somewhere in less than ideal conditions. Plan ahead — charge your cell phone, plan your route and give someone else a copy, have emergency numbers including a vet in the area, an alternate truck or trailer provider, and your destination’s contact information. Keep the temperature in your trailer comfortable for your horse — cooler is actually better, without a gale blowing through it, as the heat and humidity builds up quickly in a fully enclosed trailer. ter months. Putting away a damp horse in cold weather is poor horsemanship and hard on the horse, and cooling out a hairy horse can take hours, so do him a favour and clip at least on the neck and shoulders where he sweats the most. A cooler will wick away moisture and still keep him warm, and when he is dry, his regular blanket can be replaced. Putting him away damp under a heavy blanket just prolongs the chill. Blanketing does not reduce their ability to stay warm naturally, nor will they be warmer with a full hair coat than with a wind- and water-proof blanket. It is also advisable to change blankets periodically to avoid pressure spots perpetually in the same spot. Winter should be the training season where you advance with consistent work at home. Cold weather shouldn’t stop you, and working in the cold is better for the horse than standing still. Preparation makes it bearable, and puts you one step ahead of the competition that would rather stay in by the fireplace!

Lexi, as she is known to her friends and family, achieved the ultimate success in her first appearance at the Royal, when she and her horse Alezan 7 won the Jump Canada Medal Final following a rare second ride off for the title. Neither Lexi nor her 17 year old Westphalian gelding had experienced the pressure cooker of

that storied indoor show, but they arrived in Toronto with a secret weapon in the form of their coaches, Brent and Laura Balisky. The Baliskys have guided more than a few students through the Jump Canada and CET Medal Finals, including a rather long list of winners and top three finishers. It goes without saying that they were able to give their student the tools to handle the Royal with the confidence she needed to win. Royal Road Lexi has been training with the Baliskys since she was 11 years old. Like many youngsters from North and West Vancouver, she and her older sister Olivia began riding at North Shore Equestrian Centre when Lexi was nine. The girls’ budding passion led to the Perry family’s decision to step a little deeper into the sport and buy a horse, which is how they met Brent and Laura. “When we started riding with them, our parents would drive us out to Langley three times a week,” says Lexi. Once Olivia, who is now studying at the University of Victoria, got her driver’s license, she took over the chauffeur duties. Lexi, who turns 19 in January, has avoided the daily commute entirely by moving into an apartment at Thunderbird Show Stables so that she can be there full time. “I work part time for Brent and Laura and I ride four horses a day,” she says. When she bought Alezan 7 (known in the stable as Alex) two years ago, Lexi says she kept an open mind as to what the future would bring the partnership. “We were unsure of what we wanted to do, but we knew in the backs of our minds that the Jump Canada Medals were an option,” she remembers. One thing that Lexi was sure of, however, was that she wanted to pursue her riding in the jumper ring in addition to equitation. Alezan was purchased as a four legged mentor — a mature horse with more experience than his new rider. “He knows his job,” says Lexi. In 2012, Lexi and Alex competed in the CET Medal division, but 2013 was the pair’s first time in the Jump Canada Medal classes. “I wasn’t the top qualified rider from BC at the end of the qualifying season,” she explains. “I had done only two Jump www.gaitpost.com
Canada classes all summer, before doing the fall finale at Thunderbird.” Lexi and her coaches are sensitive to the fact that Alex is an older horse, and they are careful with the amount of jumping he does, both in training and at competitions. Team BC Lexi refers to the other young riders from BC who also traveled to the Royal as her team mates. In addition to the expertise of her veteran coaches, Lexi also gained insight from the other riders who had experience at big indoor shows. Having flown to Toronto with her mother, Susan Drury, and Brent nine days before the Jump Canada Final, Lexi joined her horse, who had shipped by land with another horse from BC, Megan Champoux’s horse Euro (Megan and Euro finished fifth in the Jump Canada Medal Final). Before arriving in Toronto for the competition, Laura had traveled to Lexington, KY with another student, Haley Stradling, who had qualified to compete at the Maclay Medal Finals. Haley would go on to finish third in the CET Medal Final and seventh in the Jump Canada Medal Final riding Duvel. Although her horse had little indoor experience, Lexi was impressed with how well Alex coped with the atmosphere at the Royal. Following the first round, she was among the four riders asked to come back into the ring for the ride off. It is extremely rare for the judges to ask for a second ride-off in a Medal Final, and Lexi says that she had no time to be nervous when she and Jessica Blum of Ontario were asked to perform a second test immediately following the ride-off. “I had been hoping I would be in the top two after the first ride off, but I certainly wasn’t expecting a second round,” she says. “The second test was quite short, with only two jumps, followed by a hand gallop and a halt. I knew that whatever I did had to be 100 percent. All the little things would stand out because the test was so short.” Lexi had the good fortune of going second, after Blum. “It gave me time to watch the first rider go and to see how I could change it to make it a better round for me.” Better it clearly was; Lexi was

A Royal Victory continued from page 29 announced the victor shortly afterward. Onward and Upward With the Jump Canada Medal title in hand, Lexi is looking forward to 2014. She and Alex also competed in the CET Medal Final at the Royal, finishing eighth. She says that pursuing the CET Medal Final again is a possibility, but she also understands that one needs to keep an open mind with one’s plans. “My goals are al-
ways changing. I always want to improve my riding, and I don’t want to get stuck on one thing year after year.” Riding is also not the only pursuit on Lexi’s list, which includes post-secondary education and some world travel. This past summer, Lexi and her father Dennis flew to Germany and came home with a nine year old mare named Cyra de Laubry. Lexi has already competed with the new horse at Del Mar in California, where she was pleased with her results in the 1.3m division. “In Thermal we will have to see how it goes, but I hope to do the 1.4m division with her,” says Lexi. “The new horse is going really well.” She may have earned her success with hard work and dedication, but Lexi fully recognizes the importance of the support she has received from her family and coaches. “I really need to give so much thanks to my parents for sticking with me this long in this sport. It’s not an easy sport in which to succeed. I’m grateful for them believing in me and letting me do this. Brent, Laura and L.J. have also given me many opportunities to succeed.”

The other two venues have put in bids to host just one Final, with Hong Kong (HKG) putting in a bid for the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final and ‘s-Hertogenbosch (NED) bidding to host the FEI World Cup Dressage Final. London’s O2 Arena, which was renamed the North Greenwich Arena for the Olympic and Paralympic events staged there during London 2012, is the proposed venue for the British bid for the joint-Finals in 2017. The Century Link Centre, which hosts sports events and concerts, has been put forward as the venue in Omaha, Nebraska for the American double bid. AsiaWorld Expo, venue for the Longines Hong Kong Masters and which is situated next to Hong Kong International Airport, is the venue proposed for the Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final. Indoor Brabant, which hosted the double FEI World Cup Finals in 2012, has been put forward as the venue for the FEI World Cup Dressage Final. The FEI has also confirmed that all three applicants — Wellington (USA), Lexington (USA), and Bromont/Montreal (CAN) — have been accepted as Official Candidates in the bid process to host the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 following assessment of the Bid Questionnaires by the FEI Evaluation Commission. Site visits by the Evaluation Commission will precede presentations by the bidders to the Commission and to the FEI Bureau.

In other bidding news, the FEI has received bids for the senior FEI European Championships in 2017. Gothenburg (SWE) has applied to host Jumping, Dressage, Para-Dressage and Driving (Four in Hand), Rotterdam (NED) has put in a bid to host the Jumping, and there are two bids to host the Eventing Championships, one from Strezgom (POL) and one from Fontainebleau (FRA). “It is gratifying that our key events are attracting such strong interest from bidders,” FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos said. “We have got a very impressive portfolio that includes the FEI World Equestrian Games, our FEI series and the Championships. It’s testament to the value of these events that so many countries are vying to host them.” In Memoriam: Jim Dunn OAM (AUS), 1946-2013 James (Jim) Lavington Dunn, former Chairman of Equestrian Australia’s Eventing selectors, has passed away after a long illness. He was 67. Jim Dunn acted as Chef d’Equipe to the Australian Eventing team and his proudest moment was leading in his team to collect gold on home ground at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, a historic third successive Olympic team gold for Australia’s Eventers. equestrian sports in Australia and at Olympic level as a coach, manager, administrator and judge. In the same year, he was also inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He was Chairman of Selectors for more than 20 years and during that time formed a close bond with national coach Wayne Roycroft and Australian team veterinarian Denis Goulding. A native of South Australia, Jim Dunn was an FEI 3* Jumping Judge and FEI 4* Eventing Judge and had officiated in Australia and New Zealand, as well as in Great Britain, Indonesia and Malaysia. He was Chairman of the National Eventing Committee from 1981 to 2009, President of the South Australian Branch from 1988 to 1994, and a member of the South Australian state branch committee, sitting on its board from 1976 to 1997. He stood down as Chairman of Selectors in June 2012 due to ill health, but remained on the selection panel under the Chairmanship of Georgia Clifford. also been sent to the National Federations as part of the ongoing consultation process. The ESPG asks for comments from the National Federations on each of the recommendations, grouped together into four categories: Foundation for Growth; Culture and Behaviour; Structure and Governance; and Communications and Marketing. Both immediate and longer-term actions are detailed, and the ESPG, while agreeing that consultation is a necessary part of the process, is also keen that much of the proposed plan should be put into action without delay. The Group urges immediate actions be implemented as soon as possible. Feedback from the National Federations will be incorporated into a final set of proposals which will be further debated at the Endurance Conference in Lausanne (SUI) on February 9, 2014. At that session, it is proposed that the National Federations set Key Performance Indicators as part of the discussion. FEI News continued on page 37
Endurance Strategic Planning Group seeks National Federations agreement for proposals The Endurance Strategic Planning Group (ESPG) has sent detailed proposed recommendations to the National Federations requesting rapid feedback. The proposals are designed to address the issues within Endurance and are specifically geared towards reducing the incidence of doping and injuries, as well as putting in place a strategic plan to support the long term sustainability of the sport. The seven-page consultation document, which details a total of 37 recommendations, is a follow-up of the ESPG presentation of its proposals during the FEI General Assembly in Montreux (SUI) earlier this month. Success in implementing these proposals depends on the willingness of everyone involved in the sport to be self-disciplined and to take personal responsibility.” He reiterates one of his most powerful messages from the Endurance session at the FEI General Assembly. “Apply these values of clean sport, welfare, integrity and partnership and we live and work together. If you do not subscribe to them, our message is, simply, leave us,” and finishes with the line, “Failure is not an option.” “We believe there is a bright future for the sport. Happy St Nicholas Day and enjoy the free app! in memoriam: Jan ranZiJn (ned), 1945-2013 Jan Ranzijn (NED), a former Para-Equestrian Driving World Champion, has died following an accident during his work as a crane operator. He was 68 years old. From Warmenhuizen in the province of North Holland, Jan Ranzijn was a regular and hugely respected member of the Dutch ParaEquestrian Driving team. He was crowned World Champion in the Grade I horse pairs on home ground at Hellendoorn (NED) in 2006. Other highlights during his competitive career were team gold at the 2012 FEI Para-Equestrian Driving World Championships in Breda (NED), where he also claimed individual bronze behind his compatriot Jacques Poppen, and team silver at the 2010 World Championships, also in Breda. He drove as a singles competitor in 2008 and 2010, and also competed in able-bodied Driving competitions in The Netherlands with a horse team. After his double medal success in Breda last year, he spoke of his love of the sport and of his pride in the home-bred eight-year-old Friesian gelding Nico van de Haffriehoeve, “Being 67 years old, I realize how fortunate I am that I can experience this. I enjoyed the competition very much and I enjoy driving every day. Nico is getting stronger, so I hope to be part of this wonderful team again in two years.” He had already started his preparations for next year’s World Para-Equestrian Driving Championships in Sandringham (GBR). “Jan Ranzijn was a highly respected athlete, www.gaitpost.com

his month’s cover girl is Kuchi, the first Gypsy Vanner born on U.S. soil. Kuchi won the Grand Champion Halter Class at the Gypsy Feathered Horse Classic in Perry, Georgia, in 2006 and 2007. Kuchi’s sire, fabulous The Gypsy King, imported in 1998, and was one of the first sixteen Vanners to come to this country. He was trained in Dressage and known to Breyer enthusiasts because of his best-selling model. Kuchi was also a model for Breyer. Her dam was the famous Bat, who in 1996 became one of the first two Vanners ever imported to the US.
The name “Gypsy Vanner” is a perfect fit. It refers to a horse selectively bred by the Gypsies of Great Britain and Ireland, and the word “Vanner” is defined as, “a horse suitable to pull a caravan.” The ideal Vanner resembles a small Shire, with more feather (leg hair), a “sweeter” head (more refined) and more colour, although the breed is based more on its sturdy conformation than colour. Kuchi is showing third level Dressage, and is a crowd pleaser at breed shows with her Spanish walk.

DISCIPLINEREPORTS Sweden’s Tinne VilhelmsonSilfven and Don Auriello won the third leg of the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Western European League series in Sweden.
Two-in-a-row for Tinne and Don Auriello in Stockholm
I
t was smiles all round in Stockholm, Sweden where Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven clinched victory in the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage qualifier on home turf for the second year in a row. Riding the brilliant Don Auriello, the 46-yearold rider headed The Netherlands’ Edward Gal and the exciting Glock’s Voice, while the Dutch duo of Hans-Peter Minderhoud and Glock’s Romanov slotted into third. It was an important day for Vilhelmson-Silfven, underpinning the strength of her relationship with the 11-year-old gelding who continues his impressive upward curve of confidence and capability. It wasn’t all plain sailing, with a few stumbles interrupting an otherwise excellent performance, but such is the quality of this horse’s work, and of his belief in his rider, that 50

they quickly recovered to come out on top. Sweden fielded five of the 15 contenders in the class, but it was Denmark’s Nanna Skodborg Merrald and Millibar who finished fourth ahead of Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee B in fifth. These two young riders are making a big impression this season, the former also finishing fourth on home ground at the opening leg of the 2013/2014 Western European League qualifying series at Odense in October, while von BredowWerndl has been making her presence felt in every leg so far. It was Skodborg Merrald who held the lead at the halfway stage of the competition after posting 76.425 following a performance filled with life, and lightness of movement. The Danish-

Winning rider Vilhelmson-Silfven was presented with a brand new Volkswagen as part of her prize. When asked his opinion of the winning horse, Minderhoud paid Don Auriello and his rider the highest of compliments. “He’s super, he goes in such a nice frame and he’s a very happy athlete as we all can see”. Vilhelmson-Silfven agreed. “He’s the perfect horse to compete on because he loves to be in the arena. He loves attention. bred Millibar wasn’t the only horse to be a little spooky in the atmospheric Ericsson Globe arena, and might have scored even higher if he hadn’t broken his stride on the final line. But his talented 24-year-old rider clearly demonstrated the skill that has earned her six national titles and which saw her take a double of wins with this good horse in the Under-25 classes during this summer’s ECCO FEI European Championships in Herning, Denmark. Von Bredow-Werndl put in a strong challenge with a powerful and polished ride on the handsome Unee BB who lined up fifth in the Grand Prix. But their score of 76.325 left them trailing their Danish rivals with just four horseand-rider combinations left to go. The Netherlands’ Hans-Peter Minderhoud then set a new target with Glock’s Romanov who posted 78.750, only to be immediately overtaken by Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello who racked up a massive 81.950. That was always going to be a big score to overtake, but the result was still far from assured as, last in, Edward Gal set off with Glock’s Voice. The Dutchman has been riding this horse for some time, but the stallion missed 12 months of competition due to injury before returning this season to win both the Grand Prix and Freestyle at Rosendaal and at Arnhem in The Netherlands in the spring. He was subsequently purchased to join Gal’s large string, and the 11-year-old son of De Niro made his FEI World Cup Dressage debut an impressive one, scoring 79.275 to clinch runner-up position.
Discipline Reports continued from page 51 turf in Stuttgart. “It was unbelievable! I was speechless when I came out of the arena!” said the 31 year old rider who posted a personal-best Freestyle score of 89.775 at the end of a spectacular test. The golden girls of German Dressage were all in fine form this afternoon, and the four members of the side that clinched the team title at this summer’s Blu Hors FEI European Dressage Championships in Herning, Denmark were holding the top four places as the competition drew to a close. Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven spoiled the party just a little when, last to go with Don Auriello, slotted into third, behind runners-up Isabell Werth and El Santo NRW, and pushing Fabienne Lutkemeier and D’Agostino down to fourth and Kristina Sprehe and Desperados FRH into fifth place in the final analysis. It confirmed once again that German Dressage is in great shape, and a colossal power to be reckoned with. It was further reinforced by the perfor-
mance of yet another promising newcomer to the top level of the sport. Jessica von BredowWerndl has all the credentials to suggest that she has what it takes, and the 27-year-old former Junior and Young Rider double-champion and holder of multiple German national titles steered Unee BB into seventh place, close behind The Netherlands’ Patrick van der Meer and Uzzo.

The USA’s Beezie Madden, top-ranked female in the Longines Rankings, has dropped two places to fourth with 2,451, just one point ahead of Marcus Ehning (GER) in fifth. Scott Brash started riding at the age of seven and competed in his first show two years later, rising quickly through the ranks to become Scottish number one. He made his international debut in 2010 and was selected for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky the same year. In December 2011, he took over the ride on Hello Sanctos, the horse he partnered to Olympic and European team gold. The latest triumph from Great Britain’s hottest Jumping prospects came at the Longines Global Champions Tour in Doha (QAT), when victory in the Grand Prix boosted Brash to the overall title — on his 28th birthday!

In an exciting four-horse jump-off with over 4,000 fans cheering them on, Jacobs and Flaming Star topped Tim Gredley (GBR) and Unex Chamberlain Z, Jessica Springsteen (USA) and Vindicat W, and Catherine Pasmore (USA) and Bonanza Van Paemel for the win. Anthony D’Ambrosio set a challenging course for Saturday night’s Grand Prix. Fortyfour entries showed in round one and just four were able to advance to the jump-off. All of the jump-off competitors then had faults through the short course. Charlie Jacobs and Flaming Star finished on top with one rail down in the fastest time of 48.62 seconds. driving report Second victory in a row for IJsbrand Chardon in Budapest December 1, 2013: Ijsbrand Chardon (NED) has won the fourth leg of the FEI World Cup Driving 2013/2014 in Budapest, Hungary. Chardon drove his experienced team of Lipizzaner horses to victory ahead of his compatriot and European Champion Theo Timmerman and local favourite József Dobrovitz (HUN). Hungarian O-course designer Gábor Fintha had laid out a very nice course in the Lászlo Papp Sports Arena with fast and technical parts, which was much appreciated by the drivers. After a less than satisfactory first competition in Budapest, Chardon decided to go back to basics and switched his new leader horse, with which he finished third in Hannover, for the
experienced Inci. This resulted in two amazing clear rounds, which contributed to a fantastic atmosphere in the arena, and Chardon and his team of Hungarian Lipizzaner horses had great support from the enthusiastic spectators, many of which had seen him win the FEI World Cup Driving in 2012. And this time he finished more than 23 penalty seconds ahead of Timmerman and Dobrovitz. Theo Timmerman had set himself the goal of using the first competition in Hannover and his wild card start in Verona to get into the right rhythm for his next four events. After his fifth place in Hannover and his second place in Verona, his aim was to do well in Budapest. He started off very fast in the first round and an unfortunate ball off the last cone luckily did not stop him qualifying for the Winning Round, in which he was second to go. The reigning European and Dutch Champion has been driving his indoor team for several years now and the experience was paying off. After a flying start, Timmerman slowed down a bit after he had a knock down in the second marathon obstacle and he finished just over one second faster than Dobrovitz, securing his second place. József Dobrovitz, who is from the town of Vecsés, around 20 kilometers away from Budapest, had strong local support. He qualified for the Winning Round despite knocking two balls in the first round, thanks to the magnificent high speed of his team. The successful Hungarian driver used a new Lipizzaner horse in the lead of his team, but the speed resulted in another two knockdowns, and he had to settle for third place.

Stuttgart-winner Daniel Schneiders decided to go for a safe round. He took his mixed team of German, Dutch and English horses through the course at a good speed, but unfortunately had one ball down, to finish in fourth place. Fifth place went to József Dobrovitz junior who, like his father, also drove a new horse in the lead of his team. József ’s nephews, Mark and Kristof Osztertág, both received a wild card in Budapest, resulting in a true family affair, with four Dobrovitz family members on the start list.
reining report canada’s Lisa couLTer Breaks ground as reining rider and coach November 27, 2013: Lisa Coulter of Vernon, BC recently made history in the sport of Reining as both a rider and a coach. As a rider, Coulter made her mark on the 2013 USA Reining Series, finishing as the inaugural Open Division Reserve Champion. USA Reining is a newly-established affiliate organization of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) that was launched in May of 2012. The organization held 10 Reining competitions throughout the 2013 season. The series culminated with the CRI1*/2*/3* Oklahoma City competition, held in conjunction with the 2013 AQHA World Championship Show, which took place November 8-23 at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, OK, USA. After tying for fourth place on a score of 214.50 in the Oklahoma City CRI on Novem-

I’m really very proud and excited. It’s an elite group to be ranked with and it shows that Canada is very strong competitively.” Her mount for the series was Western Whiz, a 10-year-old Quarter Horse gelding owned by Robert Thompson. France, Germany and Great Britain win at Salon du Cheval de Paris November, 2013: The third leg of the FEI World Cup Vaulting 2013/2014 in Paris-Nord Villepinte (FRA) saw victories from France, Germany and Great Britain. World Champion Joanne Eccles (GBR) dominated in the female division, while European Champion Jacques Ferrari (FRA) and Germany’s pas-de-deux Pia Engelberty and Torben Jacobs celebrated their first wins in the series. A total of 22 Vaulters from seven nations travelled to the famous Salon du Cheval de Paris event to showcase their carefully choreographed performances. Jacques Ferrari, the 25-year-old fitness coach from Saumur in western France, was a major draw in Paris. He won all his international competitions in the 2013 summer season, as well as the European Championships in Ebreichsdorf (AUT) in August, and continued this success seamlessly in Paris. In both freestyle-to-music rounds he scored the highest marks with his Lucifer act on Poivre Vert, lunged by François Athimon, and finished with an overall score of 8,765. “We had a medium beginning but a better second round, because we tried not to make the same mistakes twice”, Ferrari said. “I was not fully satisfied with the performance as we are now working on a new freestyle for 2014. Industry News continued from page 40 placed under the girth, would slide around and become disconnected from the box that records the data. Dr. Stevenson worked with his colleague Jeremy Oakes, a biomedical engineer, to try to develop a better system. What they’ve developed will truly change the scope of the study entirely, as they fashioned the electrodes from a material called Elastosil and mounted them in the neoprene cover of a Professional’s Choice girth. The wires are secure inside the neoprene, and the underside of the girth is totally smooth, preventing any irritation of the horse’s skin. Dr. Stevenson and a handful of other riders have already tested the girth at different events around the U.S. this year, and he reported today that the new equipment works beautifully. Now the study has an excellent method for recording echocardiograms during Cross Country, meaning data can be collected in a much more efficient way.
The box that records the echocardiogram data is connected to the girth.
