Grateful Bits There are lots of thank you’s for this month’s Tidbits. There are so many positive, supportive people in the horse industry, and if everyone pays it forward, there are no limits to what our riders and horses can do. Spread the positive – big things begin with small actions. j. mackenZie
SHOW THANKS Jennifer Mckenzie had many thanks to give to everyone involved in the Southlands Spring Dressage Show. Jennifer, a local and very successful Paralympian, would like to give a huge thank you to the Show Committee at Southlands, “to Claire Maynard for perfect riding times, and Telf who changed the arenas with such speed and efficiency that we were all Jennifer & Absolute

totally thrilled. The Exhibitor’s party was great, Alison Martin’s trivia contest was fun, and of course there were those yummy piña coladas and margaritas!” Jennifer had a good start to her season with Absolute, with scores of 67 – 72%, high score in the freestyle, and winning the Jean and Cort Mackenzie award for the highest scoring Thoroughbred at the show. (Absolute’s dam is a half Thoroughbred.) She also gives special thanks to her coach, Brianna Frewin, and all her wonderful supporters.

Also, Corinne Graves, of Riverlands Equestrian Facility, announces that the Rising Stars sponsor Riverlands has just hired Young Riders graduate Esmee Ingham of West Vancouver. Esmee won Team Gold and Individual Bronze riding for Canada as a Junior at NAJYRC in 2010, and attained her FEI Young Rider status the following year while competing on the California CDI circuit with her long-time coach and mentor Wendy Christoff. After taking time out for university, Esmee is back in the saddle and keen to share her knowledge at Riverlands, offering training and coaching to horses and riders in the Sea to Sky corridor. Riverland’s owner, Elizabeth Green, said, “it is really great to see a talented Young Rider take the next step and become part of the industry — that’s what it is all about! There must be opportunities for Young Riders for the sport to continue. We’re delighted she is here!” Esmee & Riverland’s Rollo

EDUCATION APPRECIATION Jane McLeod of Finn Farm is thankful for a great two days of positive education, beautiful weather, great friends, a beautiful setting and good food — it all came with another David Marcus clinic at the Smienk family’s Dressage facility. Eight riders participated, from as far away as Vancouver Island and Mount Vernon, from Training to Grand Prix. “David’s clear and insightful style was enjoyed by riders and auditors alike. a real knack to see right away what the combination needs, and is able to explain his instruction in clear terms with encouragement and humour. By the end of their second lesson, both riders and horses saw positive results from the weekend.” David Marcus will be returning in late June or early July. CIRCLE THE WAGONS Red Wagon Courtenay & Freya Farm of Washington state has given Langley rider Courtenay Fraser a promising prospect to ride. The four year old mare, Freya Daula R, has moved to Canada and Courtenay is “excited for the opportunity to bring along such a talented youngster and to be working with such a great breeder.” VINTAGE AGILITY The Vintage Riders group was busy again. Kendra Kowalski of Vintage Riders Equestrian Club says the agility Milo rocks Shirrocco obstacle event held at Shirrocco stables was a successful two day club challenge. “Technical and particular, Jessie and Adam Blackmon set a clever course that gave them as much a workout setting up as it gave club members a tricky task! It was good physical practice and mental preparation for whatever riding the summer brings.” INTERNATIONAL APPRECIATION Karen Pavicic and her 2014 World Equestrian Games declared horse, Don Daiquiri, competed at the CDI3* in Compiegne, France, May 28th – June 1st. Karen rode her twelve year old Oldenberg gelding, through her new Grand Prix Freestyle for the first time for a score of 66.7%, for sixth place. The pair also earned a Grand Prix score of 66.92% for 12th place in a large class of

And huge thanks to Volker for his continued advice and support as well, he comes approximately twice a week and was also in France with Jan. My next competition is next week in Achleiten, Austria CDI4* where Volker will be advising me; unfortunately Jan cannot make it. It was a big trip to France (8 hours for Don Daiquiri) and Achleiten will be 10 hours from our home base of Ratingen, Germany. Wiesbaden CDI is this weekend and I will go there to watch — it is a beautiful show that I have been to one other time, and I can’t wait to see it again. And Totilas will be there too!” “Compiegne is beautiful. The venue is in a wonderful park, stabling was excellent (part of the Hippodrome) and there was some good food (beer gardens of course!) and vendors. It’s a lovely setting and nice atmosphere. I would definitely go again! The largest class was in the FEI Pony Division with 41 competitors! We stayed at the recommended show hotel where all of the officials and judges were staying, so it was fun to socialize with everyone after each day of competition. There was also a rider’s party at the venue on Saturday night. I’m pretty proud of Don Daiquiri and how well we represented ourselves, and although it was definitely not our best performance, it’s exciting to know that we are still competitive.” “There are so many people to thank! First of all, thanks to my husband, David, for being my number one supporter and encouraging me to chase my dreams. And of course all of my family, friends, clients and supporters at home and my wonderful sponsors, Asmar Equestrian, Omega Alpha, Comfort Equestrian, Neue Schule bits,
HEADLINENEWS Bit by Bit FEi BuREau alloCatES FEi WoRlD EQuEStRian gaMES 2018 to CanaDa June 9, 2014: the Fei bureau unanimously approved bromont/montreal as host city for the Fei’s flagship event, the Fei world equestrian games, in 2018. the decision came after the Fei evaluation commission’s report was presented at the start of the bureau’s two-day meeting at Fei headquarters in lausanne (sui). the bromont olympic equestrian park, venue for the montreal 1976 olympic equestrian events, will be the hub for the Fei world equestrian games in 2018. bromont/montreal is only the second host outside europe following the alltech Fei world equestrian games in 2010 which were staged in lexington, kentucky (usa). lexington was the other remaining bidder for the 2018 games. the bureau felt that both bids were impressive but that bromont/montreal was the stronger of the two. “we are really delighted to award the 2018 games to bromont/montreal,” Fei president hrh princess haya said after the bureau decision. “the bromont olympic equestrian park is an exceptional and proven venue, and will be the ideal location for the eighth edition of the Fei world equestrian games, our most global equestrian event. “we are now just 75 days from the opening ceremony of the 2014 games in the heart of normandy, when over 500,000 spectators and millions of tv viewers will watch the best equine and human athletes compete for world titles over two weeks of absolutely top equestrian sport. “and four years from now, the games will be heading
to canada, where we expect even larger audiences on the ground and on television as equestrian sport continues its global growth.” the Fei had reopened the bidding process for the Fei world equestrian games 2018 in july of last year when the canadian bid team for bromont/montreal was unable to provide the full public sector financial support that was required before an allocation could be made. confirmation that the canadian bid committee had subsequently secured substantial government backing was a crucial element in the decision. We are all very proud of her.” “It is wonderful for Lauren to have reached the top spot on the FEI ranking, I am very proud of her achievements,” said Mary Longden, Canadian Para-Equestrian team coach. “I have never had any doubt that she is capable of being the best.” Barwick’s teammates on the tour also hold down top spots on the ranking list. Jody Schloss of Toronto, ON is currently in third with 953, while Robyn Andrews of St. Johns, NL is fourth with 941. Two-time Canadian Paralympian Ashley Gowanlock of Surrey, BC is in seventh spot with 874. Canadian Roberta Sheffield, whose home base is in Lincolnshire, UK, is in 12th place with 688 points. Both the team and individual rankings may be viewed here. “This is a tremendous achievement for Lauren. It

under way. Whether this is to become the bestever WEG will not be known until after the closing ceremonies on September 7th. But what is in no doubt is that this will be the biggest-ever WEG in history, with a record 72 nations having declared entries in at least one of the eight FEI

Canada’s Medal Hopes Historically, Canada is not one of the top medal-winning nations at the WEG. In overall medal count, Canada sits 13th, with a total of seven medals. The 2010 WEG in Lexington, Kentucky, was a comparatively successful championship for Canada, with three medals: team silver for the Canadian Eventing Team, individual Show Jumping bronze for Eric Lamaze and Hickstead, and individual Reining silver for Duane Latimer and Dun Playing Tag. While all three of these disciplines have recently been strong for Canada on the world stage, there is one discipline where Canada is almost certain to challenge both the team and individual podiums in 2014: Show Jumping. 2014 has been a terrific year for Canada’s Show Jumpers, starting with a win at the year’s first Nations’ Cup in Wellington, Florida and a long string of individual successes from those who are likely to be on the WEG team. Within two weeks in May, Lamaze won two major Grand Prix events — at La Baule, France and Rome, Italy — proving that he has at least two top horses from which to choose for Normandy: Powerplay and Zigali P S. Lamaze’s disciple, BC native Tiffany Foster, has recently added an Olympic star to her list of top mounts: Tripple X, the horse that Great Britain’s Ben Maher rode to team gold at the London 2012 Olympics. Lamaze’s and Foster’s Nations’ Cup teammates, Ian Millar and Yann Candele, have both had consistently good results as well this year. “I’m always optimistic with our group,” says Team Chef d’Equipe Mark Laskin. “Canada has always had a history of great riders. The problem is to put the great riders with the right horses.” Laskin, who is based in Langley, BC when not traveling with the team, www.gaitpost.com

disciplines. The number of nations represents a ten percent increase over any of the previous six editions of the WEG. Nine countries have declared team entries in all eight disciplines. With no four-in-hand driving entries, Canada will nevertheless be well represented with teams in the other seven disciplines.

is confident in Canada’s prospects going into Normandy; that confidence is based on tangible results: “We are the only country in the world to be in the top five at the last three major Games.” While there were no Para Dressage medals for Canada in Lexington in 2010, the current world number one ranking of Paralympian Lauren Barwick, coupled with top three team and individual results at CPEDIs in North America and Europe this spring, place Canada in a strong position for WEG. Barwick, who is from Aldergrove, BC, is Canada’s most successful Para Dressage rider. She has the luxury of two Normandy-qualified horses, Equine Canada’s Off To Paris and Barwick’s own Ferdonia 2. Canada’s Para Dressage Team is likely to be one of the most successful teams for Canada in France this summer. Rolling out the Teams The first Canadian WEG team to be announced was Para Dressage in early June. Barwick is joined by fellow BC native and Paralympic teammate Ashley Gowanlock. Countdown to Normandy continued from page 15 member team. Five Endurance riders from Alberta and BC qualified for WEG with their results at the CEI3* 160 km race in Fort St. John in May. The WEG Endurance Team of five combinations is scheduled to be announced after June 20th. Wendy Gayfer, Equine Canada’s Manager of non-Olympic disciplines, says that the plan to hold a Reining selection trial was dropped when it became unnecessary. “The purpose of the selection final was to determine which 4 riders would make up the team,” she says. “We had 6 qualified

riders. Two riders chose to ride as individuals, so by default the remaining four riders became the team and there was no need to hold the final. The WEG criteria allow for a team of 4 and up to 2 individuals.” The WEG Reining criteria state June 30th as the date on which the team will be announced. A total of seven vaulters, all from BC and Alberta, are qualified for Normandy; for the first time, Canada has qualified both a squad and pas de deux for WEG [see page 39]. A team announcement is expected by late June. The Canadian Eventing, Dressage, and Show Jumping WEG teams will be announced between the end of June and late July. Rumours have circulated that the more popular WEG events, such as the Dressage Freestyle and Individual Jumping Final, sold out immediately when they were released for online purchase in March. However, as of mid-June tickets were still available for all the Dressage and Show Jumping events. Tickets for a half day of the Team Dressage could be purchased for as little as five Euros. Surprisingly, the only events to be sold out are not historically big spectator draws: the Endurance race, and the Eventing Dressage, as well as the Eventing Show Jumping. s Spruce Meadows begins its 39th year of competition in “The Year of the Horse,” Spruce Meadows President Linda Southern Heathcott reflected on what Ron and Marg Southern started nearly 40 years ago, and what it means to the venue and the local community. “We are students of their work ethic, their dedication to our sport, and their commitment to Spruce Meadows, as well as their commitment to Calgary, to Alberta, and to Canada,” Southern Heathcott expressed. “Our team has worked very hard to really honour what they have built, in every way, in every aspect. What you’ll see this year is a beautiful facility, still continuing to grow and ever-changing to make it better for all of our visitors, whether it’s media, athletes, corporate sponsors, or the fans. We want to be a venue for each and every person, from every walk of life.” One of the largest capital improvement projects for the coming year is the construction of Founders’ Plaza, which will be unveiled in 2015.

This new upgrade will allow people to better enjoy competition in the All Canada Ring and will give an opportunity for Spruce Meadows to thank and honour those that have been supportive of Spruce Meadows for decades. Among those include Canadian Pacific, the new title sponsor of the $1.5 Million CP International during this year’s ‘Masters’ Tournament; the many corporate sponsors that have been a part of the Spruce Meadows family for years; those athletes that have come to compete from the beginning, like Ian Millar and Rich Fellers; and the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) Mounted Regiment, which has brought pageantry and majesty to Spruce Meadows. Southern Heathcott noted, “Founders’ Plaza will be the next phase of our beautification. It will be really special because it’s a place to recognize those that have helped us over the years. They believed in our team. We have many corpo-

on Gram negative bacteria. Consequently, if we find out that we have an Aerobe Gram positive bacteria and we are using an antibiotic good for Gram negative, it will not work. We sometimes have to combine 2 or even 3 antibiotics if we have a mixture of different bacteria causing the disease. Once they have grown the bacteria, they can also test some antibiotics and see which ones are effective on those specific bacteria. We call this a sensitivity test and it is extremely useful information to have on hand. Why? Because if we find out that the bacteria are still growing in the dish even though we apply penicillin to them, for example, we can assume that if we give Penicillin to the sick horse it will most likely not work. On the same train of thought, if we have a sick horse on antibiotics and he’s not getting better, we have to wonder if a) it is an actual bacterial infection or could it be something else like a virus or tumor b) it is an antibiotic that is effective against that specific bacteria or c) it is a combination of multiple types of bacteria and only parts

ntibiotics are one of the most common class of drugs used in equine veterinary medicine. There are several antibiotics available, and when a veterinarian chooses one antibiotic over another, there are a lot of things that play into that decision. Why? Because each antibiotic works very differently. Antibiotics are used to control bacterial infections. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections. Knowing exactly the cause of a disease is obviously the ideal situation. Veterinarians can send a sample to the lab where they will culture and grow the bacteria to identify which one we are dealing with. There are 2 key characteristics that are most helpful in determining which antibiotic would be most appropriate. The first one is whether the bacteria grows with oxygen in its environment or not (aerobe vs anaerobe). We have antibiotics that work only on aerobic bacteria and vice-versa. The second characteristic is called Gram negative vs Gram positive and has to do with whether the bacteria retain stain or not when we use the specific Gram dye to look at them under the microscope. The Gram positive bacteria have a different outer membrane or shell and some antibiotics will only work on Gram positive bacteria while other ones will only work
www.gaitpost.com
of them are sensitive to the antibiotic. Sometimes, unfortunately, we can’t get a sample to identify the specific bacteria causing the problem. Also, when a horse is sick, you want to start treatment promptly, and waiting for the lab results to come back to start is not always practical. In those cases, the decision is based on which bacteria most commonly causes that specific disease. For example, septic foals usually have Gram Negative Aerobe organisms and veterinarians will therefore choose antibiotics that cover this specifically. Now that we know that there are a lot of characteristics and different combinations possible, the question is, why not give a combination of antibiotics that covers every possibility? Obviously the cost would be higher but the main reason is that there are several side effects that can be the result of inappropriate use of antibiotics. First, the body contains a lot of “good” bacteria in the digestive system and on the skin that are necessary for normal everyday function. The antibiotics cannot differentiate between the “good” ones and the ones that are causing the disease, and, therefore, they attack all of them. A very good example of a possible side effect of antibiotherapy is diarrhea. Some of the bacteria in the gut will be killed while others overgrow and the normal digestion and absorption becomes compromised. In addition, a big problem we are faced with is antibioresistance. This is when bacteria becomes resistant or immune to an antibiotic and that are supposed to be effective against them. For example, we have Gram Positive Aerobe bacteria that do not get killed by an antibiotic that is effective against Gram Positives and Aerobic bacteria. Resistance is directly linked to the overuse or incorrect use of antibiotics. Using the antibiotics for 3 days instead of the recommended 7 days can play a big role in this. On the same note, using an incorrect dose or using antibiotics frequently when there are no actual bacterial infections will contribute to antibioresistance. This is a growing concern both in human and veterinary medicine. Once a bacteria has become resistant www.gaitpost.com
to an antibiotic, we need to use something else that may be stronger with more side effects, but bacteria will eventually become resistant to this new product as well. There are now some bacteria that are resistant to multiple and very strong antibiotics, and there is no other treatment available. Bacteriology and antibiotherapy is a very vast and complicated subject, but the take-home messages are that antibiotics are drugs with side effects and should not be used if it’s not medically indicated. When using antibiotics, following the instructions on when, how much and for how long to administer is of the utmost importance for two reasons; to avoid side effects and to assure that the antibiotics work properly. FEI celebrates pivotal decision on international sport horse movement
T
he Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) is celebrating reaching a major milestone in its drive to improve the international movement of high-level sport horses, after a pivotal decision by global members of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Representatives from 178 countries attending the General Session of the World Assembly of OIE Delegates in Paris (FRA) gave a resounding green light to the adoption in principle of the “high health, high performance horse” (HHP) concept within a new OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code Chapter. This significant step means that there is now a specific OIE mandate to work with governments around the world to ensure a harmonized

process for moving top-level sport horses for major international competitions. The HHP concept will be rolled out in 2014, and Korea has already implemented import requirements based on this concept for the 17th Incheon Asian Games 2014 (September 19th – October 4th). The news comes less than 18 months after the FEI and the OIE embarked on a three-year public-private partnership in response to a clearly expressed demand from countries for help in improving the cross-border movement of toplevel sport horses. The OIE delegates’ endorsement of the HHP concept also follows last November’s creation by the FEI and IFHA of the International Horse

Sports Confederation (IHSC), the first formal alliance between the world’s leading governing bodies for racing and equestrian sport, which has a primary goal of improving horse transportation. Several international conferences organized for government veterinary and animal health experts around the world over the last three years, including in Hong Kong, Panama City and Mexico, have also contributed to the support of HHP. “This is a landmark development in global access to equestrian sport. It means our athletes, who are working so hard to represent their countries at key international events, including the Olympic and Paralympic Games, have the opportunity do so in future with practical and safe horse movement approaches from governments around the world,” explained HRH Princess Haya, FEI and IHSC President. “We are extremely grateful to everyone within the OIE, FEI and the racing world, who have seen the necessity for this, and have dedicated themselves to enhancing horse sport and further opening up the economic benefits for communities working with horses. We’re now looking forward to the job ahead, and to working to create the conditions necessary for success.” “We have worked with the FEI for over ten years to identify practical national veterinary requirements, and we have recently advanced further quickly, presenting government experts around the world with solutions to meet their specific requirements based on the OIE standards of compartmentalization and harnessing our public-private partnership. This has been key to today’s outcome,” said OIE Director General, Dr Bernard Vallat. “Our members fully understood the need for finding a way with all details needed to better recognise the lower risk of moving such highly supervised horses within OIE Standards, and the HHP concept does that. There has also been a recognition of the economic impact of the equine industry and this concept will allow countries to tap into the potential income associated with increasing numbers of FEI and horse racing events.” www.gaitpost.com
“It is vital for the growth of equestrian sport that horses can move safely and easily to compete at the world’s biggest events”, said Louis Romanet, Chairman of the IFHA and Vice President of the IHSC. “This latest development follows intensive efforts by the OIE, FEI, IFHA and veterinary and government experts around the world to adopt an improved specific approach to international movement of our top-level sport horses, and this will have a deep impact on the future of both international racing and FEI sport.”

The first would prove to be the best; when Eric Lamaze and his 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding partner Powerplay blazed around the course with no faults, no one was able to catch them without fault. They set a time of 39.52 seconds for victory. McLain Ward almost had his third win of the day, but it was not to be when he and Zander

pulled the top plank at the final vertical in the jump-off. Their fast time of 37.51 seconds gave them second place. Pablo Barrios (VEN) and Zara Leandra finished third with four faults in 39.78 seconds, while Sameh El Dahan (EGY) and WKD Pepperpot placed fourth with eight faults in 42.34 seconds. Lamaze and Powerplay, owned by Artisan Farms LLC, have had a successful spring including a win in the CSI 5* Grand Prix in La Baule, France. “They’re coming into Spruce Meadows in really good form,” Lamaze noted. “I have a lot of confidence in them. It was a year ago that I rode Powerplay for the first time, and it was a different ending from tonight. He’s come a long way in one year. It’s a different horse now.” Lamaze described Powerplay as “a bit lazy” and laidback. He laughed, “He’s not the most fun horse to ride in the morning. He’s a funny personality. He’s very spooky; he’s afraid of a lot of things, but he’s brave at the same time. He’s not really a horse that I think I would get along with, but we’ve formed a partnership. We like each other, and I have a lot of respect for him.” Schooling before the class, Lamaze said he could feel the tension of the riders and sensed the importance of the first day. Leading the victory gallop is something that he will savor from his memories. He expressed, “I love coming to Spruce Meadows. No one will ever get tired of winning here. It’s always special to win any event, especially in the International Ring. There’s a lot of other guys fighting to win. McLain had a fantastic day. I thought for sure he was going to go for a hat trick, and it looked that way until the end. It’s really not easy. These jump-offs are won with very fast rounds. It’s really good sport. We take it seriously.” “In the old days I took it for granted with this little horse Hickstead,” he continued. “It was a lot easier to win classes. Now that I look back, I wished I enjoyed them a lot more. With La Baule, Rome, winning here, I’m really enjoying myself. I have a new respect for how hard it is to win. These horses are very good horses, but for a long www.gaitpost.com
time, one was so extra special that it made my job very easy. I really appreciate now when it goes my way.” Lamaze also complimented the footing in the International Ring. “I don’t think I’ve ever ridden on better grass footing than tonight. It’s to perfection. As a rider, this is fantastic. The horses love it, it’s not slippery. tremely high quality of horses and riders at the Spruce Meadows Summer Series, so he has to be exact in his design. “The time allowed is playing a big part. The footing here, the horses are jumping really comfortable out of it, really confident. That makes our job harder, but in a good way. We don’t want to overdo it in the first week, but I think it’s going to be a really good competition on Saturday,” he said. First in the jump-off was the new combination of Tiffany Foster (CAN) and Artisan Farms LLC’s Tripple X III. They set a quick leading time of 41.99 seconds, which would hold up for second place at the end of the class. Eight horses later, Lamaze and Powerplay, a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding by Casall x Limbus, who were able to catch Foster’s time. They made quick rollbacks on course and lowered the leading time to 40.86 seconds. “The final line, I did one less stride. Tiffany asked me before she went if she should do eight (strides) in the last line, and I said since she didn’t know the horse all that well, it wasn’t a great idea. So I knew where to beat her!” Lamaze joked. Foster retorted, “I even asked him to go slow, and he didn’t. Today I said to Eric, ‘How fast should I go?’ and he said, ‘Just go as fast as you’re comfortable and feel.’ So I thought, ‘Alright, I’ll go pretty fast!’ He just keeps getting better and better. Foster said that her relationship with Tripple X III felt strong from the beginning. “The ones that I’ve ridden so far jump big jumps and [have] been really, really scopey, brave, and safe. He feels pretty fast,” she revealed. “This is the seventh class I’ve ever jumped him in. When I tried him, he felt pretty comfortable already. For us, this Grand Prix score was an important part of fulfilling the final phase of our WEG criteria, so that has been a real focus and I’m really pleased with how it went. I couldn’t have asked for more than what Capital produced yesterday. I thought that Capital and I put in a clean, harmonious, correct, powerful test, and that is exactly what I was looking for.” Marcus added, “This puts us one step closer to representing Canada at WEG, and I am very excited about that. It was also the first competition that Butternut Ridge has sponsored. I want to sincerely thank my owner, Deborah, not only for her support of me and her horses that I ride, but of this class as well.” A stone bruise resulting from a rock becoming wedged in Chrevi’s Capital’s shoe prevented the pair from competing in the $12,000 Grand Prix Freestyle, presented by Butternut Ridge.

I can’t believe it.” Phoenix immediately called the mare’s breeders and owners, Don and Anita Leschied of Woodslee, Ontario “and we were all crying on the phone.” Although the mare dropped one rail during the Show Jumping phase of the three day to pick up four faults and finish with a score of 59.80, the ride was enough to move them into top place (they had been in second after Saturday’s Cross Country phase). As winner, Phoenix received the Todd Sandler Challenge Trophy. A Little Romance is by the Thoroughbred stallion A Fine Romance. The mare is “the sweetest horse and I love her,” said Phoenix. “She is incredibly obedient to ride and has so much heart like Exponential (Phoenix’s 2012 Olympic mount) and Pavarotti (her Pan Am gold medal ride.)” Lisa Barry of The Plains, Virginia, finished in second in the CCI 3 star with FIS Prince Charming, a 10-year-old grey Thoroughbred gelding. MuStang poWDER hoRSE tRialS Starting Friday May 16th and running until the 19th, returning after a ten year hiatus, Mustang Powder Horse Trials 2014 was a great success! Located in Chase Creek, the facility is made up of 240 acres, owned by both the HolmesSmith and Marks families. This was the only FEI level event to be held in BC this year, running CCI* and CIC* levels and was comprised of riders from Alberta, BC as well as several from the USA. Rain held off for Saturday, letting riders get through their Dressage tests relatively dry, but cross country was not so fortunate. The course was exciting, posing many questions for both horse and riders. The rain did leave the footing somewhat slick, which lead to many riders having time faults. That being said, it was great to ride a course that incorporated open fields, some wooded areas and some impressive hills! The sun made another appearance for stadium, held next to the old water complex. This made for a smaller ring with some tighter turns, over a slightly rolling terrain needing a well planned ride to make it through the course clear. After a great weekend at a beautiful facility, I would like to say big thank you to the Holmes-Smiths, Marks and Rowans for organizing and hosting this event, one that will hopefully become an annual stop for all event riders in the north west! — Submitted by Elizabeth Penner

Bettering her previous individual qualifying score of 7.097 with 7.444, Jeanine, who was a member of the Canadian Equestrian Team (CET) at the 2010 WEG, also earned a second qualification score for the women’s CVI3* Individual division. Alisa Schmidt of Chilliwack, BC, finished in eighth place with 6.872. Schmidt, who was also a member of the CET in 2010, has already qualified for WEG at CVI Pacific Cup earlier in the month. Team Alberta’s Northern Lights Squad members, Todd Griffiths, Jeanine Van der Sluijs, Shianne Hofer, Angelique Van der Sluijs, Brooke Boyd and Dallyn Shields, executed their CVI 3* Squad performance to earn 6.668 which qualified the entire group for WEG. This is the first time a Canadian Vaulting Squad and Pas de Deux have qualified to attend the games.

Begins Another Season In World Class Style
Brian Morton and Spitfire in the World Cup qualifier.
MORTON UNBEATABLE IN SEASON OPENER World Cup Show Jumping returned to Langley’s Thunderbird Show Park as the facility welcomed competitors from around the world to their 41st season opener, The Canadian Premiere. On May 25th, it was a Canadian who triumphed in the $25,000 International Gems Grand Prix. Langley’s own Brian Morton held the lead for all but two rounds in a packed field of riders representing five nations. Mexico’s Enrique Gonzalez and Zephyr VDL were first into the ring for the jump off, posting a time of 43.99, but Morton was quick to answer the challenge, shaving close to two seconds off his time aboard Atlantis T. That time would hold through rounds by Jamie Barge, Ireland’s Jennifer Crooks and Karianne Boyce-Lockhart, but it was 18-year-old Amelia Vernon who bested Morton’s time of 42.12. www.gaitpost.com
With shouts of ‘go’ from coach Jenn Serek on the sidelines, Vernon galloped across the final jump with a time of 40.63 and a promise that her 13 year-old Dutch Warmblood, Udolente, could ‘have all the bananas in the whole world’. But Vernon’s lead was short lived. Morton and Spitfire pushed hard and were the only pair to break the 40-second barrier, followed by Andrew Ramsay on Absie who were just off the pace with a time of 40.22. “I was hoping I wasn’t going to have to work as hard as I did, but when I saw Amelia Vernon overtake my time, it just inspired me to go get the lead back,” said Morton. “As always when I ask, Spitfire was there for me and answered the call beautifully.” After six years together, Morton and his 17 year-old Selle Français gelding continue to de-

said Morton. Show organizers are ensuring that riders put their best foot forward with a $450,000 investment that incorporates the most advanced and scientifically engineered footing in North America. Eight railcars of silica sand alongside 20,000 lbs of synthetic textile and close to 2400 tones of equestrian sand & crush rock, were recently installed in the Park’s Grand Hunter Ring, bringing the total investment to over 168,000 square feet across three rings, following the conversion of the FEI WarmUp and Thunderbird jumper rings last year. Nayel Nassar & Lordan.
Thunderbird continued from page 41 liver. Spitfire will challenge the field again next weekend in the $55,000 Purica Recovery EQ CSI2*-W World Cup Qualifier. “I think he’s as good as he’s ever been, I just have to manage him and what shows we go to,” explained Morton. “That’s one of the things that is wonderful about Thunderbird, the footing is so good that it’s an easy place to jump an older horse — and Spitfire has had a lot of great results here because of that.” Morton hopes to double down in Sunday’s Qualifier with Nicole Grafton’s bay, Atlantis T, after laying down a fast round at the top of the order and holding the lead for most of the class. In the end, the pair held on for fourth. “I was thrilled with him. He’s a new mount for me and he’s a young horse,” noted Morton. “He really stepped up to the plate. However it finished, I was going to be extremely happy with him.” In addition to prize money, Morton earned the $1,000 bonus for sporting a pair of SSG Digital gloves under the ‘Go Clean for the Green’ promotion and a stunning ring from International Gems, which he promptly earmarked for his wife, Maria. “It’s going to be a wonderful thank you for my beautiful wife. She works very hard behind the scenes and supports me in an enormous number of ways, so she’s very deserving of that,” 42

THE FUTURE’S SO BRIGHT FOR NAYEL NASSAR There were plenty of shades in the stands as 59 riders took to the field for Friday night’s $33,000 CSI*2 Maui Jim Grand Prix at Thunderbird Show Park. Under sunny skies, Egypt’s Nayel Nassar made a successful return to British Columbia’s horse capital, besting an international field in the hunt for points on the World Cup circuit. Aboard his 10 year-old Hanoverian gelding, Lordan, Nassar put it all on the line, literally, as the only rider to take an inside track and ultimately, the win. After a tough first round through Peter Holmes course, fifteen riders advanced to the jump off. Canada’s John Anderson was the first into the ring, riding clear and setting the pace with a time of 44.38. Enrique Gonzalez of Mexico followed, but tipped a rail at the second to last fence to finish out of the top spots. After Brenda Riddell posted a clear round at 47.03, it was Nassar’s turn on Lordan. Known for speed, the pair made a tight turn to take the inside track to fence two. “I saw it when I walked the course and I thought there would be a couple other people who would do it,” he explained.
Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag
www.gaitpost.com
As the only pair to try it, the gamble paid off. The crowd erupted in cheers as Nassar galloped to the final jump, leaving little room for the field to challenge with a lightning fast time of 40.22. “My horse has a really little stride so I knew I had to be crafty somewhere,” noted Nassar. “I just hoped he wouldn’t spook at the water, but I cut the turn shorter than it already was and he handled it well.” Alec Lawler of the USA went clear on Agamemnon, alongside Israel’s Danielle Goldstein on Carisma, but only American Andrew Ramsay on Welfare came close, riding quick and pushing to the final fence to finish with a time of 41.81 and moving into second. “This is obviously a big year for us with the World Cup finals just being done and the World Championships just around the corner and it’s exciting,” noted Nassar. “My horses are in great form and we’re just trying to pace ourselves for the summer so we can be ready for WEG in September.” In September 2013, Nassar made a crosscountry trip to HITS Saugerties for the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix, winning the class on Lordan. Born in Chicago, raised in Kuwait and riding in California, he was Egypt’s reserve rider at the London 2012 Olympic Games and hopes to qualify for Rio in 2016. In addition to prize money, the top finishers in the class picked up a pair of sunglasses from sponsor, Maui Jim. Now the fastest growing premium polarized sunglass maker in the world, the brand got its start in 1980 as a small company selling sunglasses on the beach in Lahaina, Hawaii. morton magnificent in world cup qualifier at thunderbird Riders from nine nations took to the grass for Sunday’s $55,500 CSI*2-W Purica Recovery EQ World Cup Qualifier at Thunderbird Show Park, with just eight besting a tough course set by Peter Holmes to advance. It took ten rounds and a lot of rails to get the first clear ride from Israel’s Danielle Goldstein, but Canadian Brian www.gaitpost.com

Morton was right behind her, clear with the fastest first round time to guarantee a jump off. And when the class wrapped up twenty-eight rounds later, Morton was still on top. “I had the advantage of riding first on my young horse, so after that trip, I knew exactly what I had to do when I went back in on Spitfire,” said Morton. Morton was back in just ten rounds later with his Selle Français gelding, Spitfire. “When I had a rail down in Friday’s Grand Prix, I thought, OK, Sunday’s my day,” noted Morton. “Spitfire rose to occasion, as he always does, and was outstanding.” Goldstein was first in for the jump off, but tipped a rail late in the round to leave the door open for the rest of the field. Morton followed and was quick to prove the course could be mastered and setting the pace with a time of 35.63. “The jump off course wasn’t that long and in some ways that favours me,” explained Morton. “Spitfire is 17 and I need to think about fatigue.” Mexico’s Edoardo Sanchez-Navarro looked like he had the speed and covered ground with his 9 year-old gelding, Alfie Scappino BMW, but the pair were just over the time to beat with 35.82. “When I finished I said, ‘I think I was really fast today, but I was not quite fast enough,’” he chuckled. George Tidball
G
eorge Murray Tidball passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 3rd at the age of 83 years. Our ever optimistic father lived his final days in Naramata, looking over the lake with a glass of red wine in hand. George was born in Carstairs, Alberta. His mother Margaret thought he was such a beautiful baby she nicknamed him Bud (short for rosebud). He started his education in a one room school house, graduated from Penticton High, failed his first year at UBC (rooming with an apprentice brewmaster), and then graduated top of his year as a Chartered Accountant.

July 2014
In 1952 he married his great love and business partner, Dianne. George and Dianne left secure incomes to roll the dice over and over again. During his first job as an accountant with Alcan in Kitimat, George so impressed a visiting Harvard professor that he was offered a scholarship. George and his wife Dianne and three children went to Boston and two years later he graduated at the top of his MBA class as a Baker’s Scholar. George then moved his family to Chicago and pursued a PhD in economics with Milton Friedman. Tired of being a poor student, he took a

position with consulting firm McKinsey and Company. He drove back to the West Coast in a Volkswagen Beetle to be a consultant for MacMillan Bloedel. Dianne missed the child-friendly fast food at McDonald’s, and urged George to visit their headquarters on a business trip. McDonald’s President Ray Kroc was impressed with thirty-four year old George’s brazenness, youth and Harvard qualifications. George brought McDonald’s to Richmond in 1967. He sold out of MacDonald’s and created his own restaurant chain, The Keg and Cleaver, in 1971. The Tidball family moved out to Langley and started Thunderbird Equestrian Centre, now rated number two in North America. He was involved with many other business ventures including The Old Spaghetti Factory, A&W, and Apex ski resort. If you asked George to highlight his accomplishments he would include placing fourth in a pro team roping competition at the Cloverdale rodeo and winning a golf tournament at 81. He was proudest of all his children and grand-
children’s successes and their work ethic. As well, it gave him great joy to be part of the journey to success of his friends from the McDonald’s and Keg days. His best friends range from cowboys to heavy equipment operators to CEOs. He was predeceased by his parents Bert and Margaret Tidball and his brothers Bill and Larry and many special nieces and nephews. George is survived by his loving sister Sara Lee and brother Jim and many special nieces and nephews. He is greatly missed by wife Dianne; children Kathy (Mark), Stephen (Trish), Jane and Laura (Brent) as well as grandchildren; Christine, Jill (Max) and Scott; George (Trisha) and Stephanie (Quinten), Laura Jane, and Matthew. Two great grandchildren Rees and Logan lit up his life. No flowers please. Donations to the Dianne Tidball Legacy fund at Thunderbird Show Park would be much appreciated. Thunderbird Show Park will be hosting a public celebration of George Tidball on Sunday, June 22nd at 2:00 pm.

Thunderbird continued from page 43 rounds, but were a few seconds off the pace. Former Olympian and Pan American Games medalist, Enrique Gonzalez (MEX) were the only ones to try an angled track through the combination mid-course, and the gamble almost paid off. He looked fast to the final fences, but finished with a time of 36.07 and high praise for Morton. “I thought the only room that he left was the turn to the oxer, which I think I did faster, but I paid for it after when I couldn’t make the nine strides to the next jump,” noted Gonzalez. “This is a sport that hinges on hundreds of a second.” For Morton, hearing the Canadian national anthem and leading the victory gallop are sweeter when you can do it on home turf. The Vancouver-native is a regular at Thunderbird and always draws huge cheers from the crowd. “We both love competing here and plan a large part of our season around these tournaments,” explained Morton. “I feel a lot of support from everybody and it gives me that little Thunderbird continued on page 57

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

ummer is almost here, but what a spring it’s been for Eventing in BC! Mustang Powder offered a great FEI event in May. It was nice to see the 13 CCI* and CIC* riders running on such a great venue. A little bit of rain didn’t even get them down. A big thanks to Nick and Ali Holmes-Smith, and Gail and Laurie Rowan for putting it all together! Remember that the Adult Rider Summer Camp is quickly approaching (July 7-9), so don’t forget to send in entries soon, as we need enough time to book additional clinicians if necessary! By popular demand, we are also adding two more components/electives to camp this year — “in-hand” groundwork (introducing or ali holmes-Smith & spartacus
gaining confidence over natural obstacles such as water, banks and ditches), and a Pace Clinic (weather permitting). Check out the registration forms and information on the HTBC website (horsetrialsbc. com) and see you at camp! Also save the date — November 15th is the HTBC AGM and Awards Banquet. We hope to see you all in Harrison Hot Springs! Ride safe!— Julie Johannson President, Horse Trials BC
