RAMSON 1995-2014 Ramson and Brian Morton winning the 2011 $15,000 USHJA Hunter Derby at Evergreen, Washington.

Ramson, You are dearly missed and loved by everyone at Cobblestone Farm. We wish to extend our heart-felt gratitude to our veterinarian, Dr. Kristin Poirier of Wise Vet Services, and our Barn Manager, Shirley Hedgecoe, for providing the best care possible for Ramson at the end of his life.

Recovering my inner superhero i love to defy gravity. I live for speed. Even though you take such great care of me, with amazing food, water, grooming and love, sometimes I need a little something extra to take the edge off my aches and pains. But now I’m in recovery. Thanks to Recovery EQ by Purica my pain is gone, and my energy is back big time. I’m trotting, cantering leaping and flying again — recovering my “inner superhero.”

Recommended for horses that want to soar and fly (or want to get rid of joint pain). Not recommended for horses who want to sit on the couch all day and watch tv. We cannot guarantee that your horse won’t stop talking about how great he feels. Pure Recovery. Pure Relief. Pure Wellbeing.

www.RecoveryEQ.com

This is the fine print. We want your horse to feel fine. We love healthy and happy horses. Send us a pic of your super hero horse and a story and we’ll enter you in a draw to win a years supply of Recovery EQ. ? facebook.com/RecoveryEQ

TIDbitS

Year of the Horse It’s the Year of the Horse, and no matter the age, child or “vintage”, we all need to remember the joy of horses. When things get difficult, whether in training or elsewhere, recapture that feeling whenever you can, put yourself back on track, and remember why we do what we do with these amazing animals.

a magical day Isauro Flores sent this glowing review of Odysseo to Tidbits to share with everyone. His bounding enthusiasm for what he witnessed behind the scenes is as much a pleasure to read as Odysseo was to witness. “Thanks to Ingrid going to adjust the County Saddle used by the main rider who does the Dressage solo at Odysseo, we were invited to stay and live a day in horse heaven. From 0800 to 2300 hours we witnessed the training, dedication and love that go into producing such a 8

show. Imagine being surrounded by passionate horse men and women working with their steeds, practicing and fine tuning their craft. During their ‘gymnastic’ time every rider is mounted on their horse to work for a full hour at the walk — flexions, shoulder in, travers, and demi volts. Heaven. A place where they still value the walk. Then the new horse arrivals were trained for their loose work routine, one at a time, patiently and lovingly taught to come, move, or follow. No wonder the horses perform so well. They are

An Excellent Vintage Vintage Riders First Aid Clinic.

Tidbits continued from page 8 given the time and methodical training required to form a strong bond. After all the practice came the actual show. We were up at the control centre with headphones listening to the cues for light, horses, and riders — the synchrony was mesmerizing, and all in French with the corresponding sense of humour! These horses lead an amazing life. They go out several times per day for walks and short training sessions. They are allowed to be horses and the performers are horsemen before they are showmen. They train them so well and have such a bond with their horses that the horses give their all, willingly. What a treat – Odysseo is a testament to the giving nature of horses, and to human and horse becoming one.” Stamping Horses Every year is the year of the horse as far as I am concerned, but Malaysia has come up with a lovely stamp celebrating the horse. It is great to see so much mention of the horse in mainstream media – let’s hope the horse will eventually become as much a part of our culture as it is of the U.K. and Europe, where top riders are the household names, and not spoiled, entitled celebrities

Kendra Kowalski let Tidbits know that the Vintage Riders Club is off to a good start for 2014. At an Equine Emergency First Aid workshop, hosted by Lisa MacBurney of Dragonfly Acres, twenty members spent two days in the barn practicing their skills. Everyone came home with new first aid kits, and the hopes that they wouldn’t have to use them too soon! The ladies learned many essential procedures and they made notes in the makeshift classroom of chairs set in a cleaned out double horse stall. Very tolerant horses were much appreciated. Everyone received a manual and was served a very good lunch and all agreed that this clinic was a great start to the New Year. QMS Spreads the Word Queen Margaret’s School is letting everyone know that they have new QMS Pony Club Entrance Scholarship. Announced at the US Tidbits continued on page 12

A little girl’s dream come true — Elise duke and Cookie.

Tidbits continued from page 12 was. She had to spell her name twice for me! Elise began taking lessons from Hawley shortly after our encounter. Hank (Livingstone) was her lesson horse! She was such a lucky girl! Hank was amazing. He took great care of her. He responded well

and was very patient with her. You could see it in his big, beautiful brown eyes that he knew he was carrying precious cargo. Elise fell in love with the sport and was convinced that she wanted to be a champion Eventer, just like Hawley. That’s when our lives changed. Shortly after that, Hawley told us that she found a great pony for Elise. Hawley told us that the pony was a sweetheart and would take Elise to the next level. I trust Hawley immensely, so I knew that this was the right move. Five days later, there was a beautiful Connemara pony waiting for my daughter. Hawley knew exactly how she wanted to present the pony to Elise. The great thing about Hawley is that she remembers what it’s like to be a little girl in love with horses. Hawley brought Elise over to the stall and….SURPRISE!!! It was a day our whole family will never forget. Elise is in love!!! We’ll be happy no matter what she decides to do, but as far as Hawley goes, she will always be our friend we found on the side of the road.” Never forget your inner little girl…

THEbanner HaWley bennett-aWad clinic What are the ingredients for a great weekend? Take a bunch of enthusiastic Eventers, place them in a perfect footing covered arena, add one dozen or so brightly coloured jumps, and finally, add a 2 time Olympic-level coach and watch the transformations happen. On February 8th and 9th , 2014 Nikki Ayers of Harmony Farms Eventing in Langley hosted a very successful jump clinic with the very talented Canadian Olympian, Eventer Hawley BennettAwad. My group of four riders started after lunch so we were able to warm up and scope out the jumps. Nothing too daunting that made Juno and I want to run and hide but it did appear to make one think. When Hawley arrived with her bright pink snow pants and puffy white jacket, she had us introduce ourselves then right to work. Our first exercise, Hawley had us start on a circle with two jumps spaced evenly apart for the

rider to navigate the horse to either get seven or eight canter strides. Hawley would request the number and would coach us through it. This was good to get the rider to think of line, pace, balance, shortening and lengthening. Not as easy as it may seem! I would not be wrong to say that, as that is how the rest of the exercises went. Personally, I enjoy the technicality of a good jump course, I may not be able to produce perfection in the first round but the skills you have or think you have shine through. That is what makes a great coach like Hawley, she sees where one is struggling and explains what you need to do, and to do it with ease. As Hawley said, “you are only riding your horse for one hour a day, ride with accuracy.” Banner continued on page 18

Well I have to say, “Hats off to you Nikki, you were able to safely navigate the many trucks and trailers with ease and were able to keep the flow of traffic going. You have many talents!” When Juno and I entered the arena on day two, we were greeted with a ‘skinny’. As I knew this was part of the venue for the day it did not make it any easier to digest. I had an eek and a woo hoo, all in the same breath. Hawley had us working on bending lines and on skinnies. The lesson was about accuracy and control. After each round Hawley would talk to you, and make you feel like you could do this, then have you repeat once, maybe twice, until it flowed. Well it all came to an end, and I am happy to say Juno and I both learned what we needed to work on to make this eventing year a success. Huge thanks to Nikki Ayers and Hawley Bennett-Awad for a successful weekend! Thank

A Shining Star Orion (1996 – 2014) By Karen Robinson

I

n their four years together, Alberta native Pia Fortmuller and Orion put themselves on the Dressage world map, competing at some of Europe’s most famous venues, including Aachen. Pia’s goal for Orion this year was to be a member of the Canadian Dressage Team at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France. At 18 years old, Orion was as fit and sound as he’d ever been. “Orion was in fabulous shape,” says Pia. “At our last international competition we won the Grand Prix.” But horses are a heartbreaking combination of strength and fragility. On January 19, 2014 Pia lost Orion to colic that was discovered in surgery to have been caused by intestinal tumours.

20

march 2014

A Timid Warrior Pia’s and Orion’s paths were separate but parallel for a number of years before she purchased him as her first Grand Prix horse. Bred in Holland at Hoeve Livonia, Orion was by one of the world’s most successful Dressage sires, Jazz, and out of a Consul mare. Imported to North America as a stallion, Orion was purchased by Patricia Hatch as a four year old. Having developed some undesirable stallion behaviours by the time he was six, he was gelded before moving into Top Fox Farm in Langley, where he would eventually develop into Leslie Reid’s second Olympic horse. Having had a late start to his training, and possessing what Leslie calls “an incredible flight instinct”, Orion was a challenging horse in the early

days. Langley horse trainer Dean Kucey spent a number of months working with Orion when Leslie was away in Europe campaigning Mark toward his Olympic performance in 2004. Leslie also credits her protégé Ashleigh Luca-Tyson for being a valuable link in Orion’s development. “Ashleigh rode him for a year and showed him. She helped me a great deal when I had him in Arizona, and rode him through some tough times.” Throughout the period that Orion was gradually beginning to show the qualities that would make him a Grand Prix horse, Pia was training at Top Fox Farm with Leslie. She completed her BA at Simon Fraser University while riding, teaching and learning at Top Fox for five years. “During the time I was at Leslie’s, I remember how much I admired Orion; he was always a horse that captivated my attention,” says Pia. “But I would never have thought that I would be so honoured to call such a special horse my teammate one day.” Although she frequently picked up rides on various horses at Top Fox, Pia rode Orion only once. “When I rode passage with him (it was Orion’s absolute strength), it was pure inspiration to feel such talent,” she remembers. When Leslie and Orion competed at the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong, Pia and her mother Dagmar were in the stands cheering them on. Following the Olympics, Orion was delivered to Steffen Peters in San Diego to be sold. Pia didn’t expect to see him again. THE STARS ALiGN When her studies were finished, Pia sought Leslie’s advice about her riding career. Leslie told her she should go to Germany to further her riding. She put Pia in touch with her long-time friend Leonie Bramall, a rider originally from Vancouver who has developed an incredibly successful training and competition career in northern Germany. It was Pia’s decision to accept an invitation to take her horses to Leonie’s stable that would bring Orion back into her life. After spending nearly two years in California, Orion had not sold. Leslie decided to send him to Leonie with the plan that he would be campaigned in Europe and sold there. When Pia travelled www.gaitpost.com

to Germany with her three horses, Orion went with them. Leonie quickly identified Orion’s talent, and she encouraged Pia and her mother to consider buying him as a first Grand Prix horse. “He was 13 at the time and I was a little nervous about taking on an ‘older’ horse, but I remember ever so clearly a conversation I had with Leslie,” says Pia. “The one thing that Leslie guaranteed was that Orion was one tough cookie and would hold up to every challenge I presented him with. Leslie was most certainly right; Orion stood true to his name, a true warrior.” Pia struggles to identify individual highlights of Orion’s show career in Europe, because there were so many. “Some very memorable moments that come to mind are my very first Grand Prix at a national show in 2010, and then my first international Grand Prix that same year, which was in Hungary.” Pia’s and Orion’s first international win, in Lipica, Slovenia in 2012 was a milestone achievement, as were the pair’s two appearances at Aachen. The process from brains to blueprints took about six months, and Riverlands broke ground in the fall of 2007. The subsequent construction took 18 months, with the horses moving into their new home in the fall of 2009.

S

ituated on 1,260 acres in the Pemberton Valley, Riverlands Equestrian is worth the drive up the Sea to Sky highway. Surrounded by mountains that make the corridor the playground of many winter sport enthusiasts, the facility is decidedly outside of the horse mecca of Langley, BC, but would be at home on any list of the world’s top facilities. The main barn houses 12 horses in 15' x 15' stalls, each of which is outfitted with exterior view windows, ventilation options and thermostat controlled automatic waterers. There are an additional four stallion stalls measuring 15' x 20' and a quarantine/foaling barn with three 15' x 15' stalls that has been approved by Agriculture Canada’s Government vets for the quarantining of imported horses. The facility’s list of amenities is impressive: four grooming stalls with Infra Red Solariums, aisles paved with no-slip rubber bricks, a covered round pen and automatic horse walker, an architect designed veterinary examination and treatment room with custom built stocks, veterinary lab, dedicated farrier room, and heated tack rooms. After a particularly bad hurricane season at their home in the Bahamas, Elizabeth Green and Marc Cheval decided to search for a new home

for their horses. Finding favour with the potential of a more sustainable lifestyle coupled with less chance of natural disaster, they embarked on a global property search that culminated in the purchase of the Riverlands property in 2006. The farm ticked all the boxes on their wish list, which included agricultural land to grow food and hay for the horses in accordance to organic farming methods, the property’s own water supply and the ability to harness sustainable sources of energy to provide power. “We looked at a couple of places before Marc found Riverlands, quite by chance through a friend who had been looking to buy land in Canada,” Elizabeth explains. “We aren’t in the thick of it, say like Langley, but the space provided by the property and its many different terrains does facilitate the training of horses in a way that wouldn’t be possible in a more restricted area and enables the business to offer more services to clients as a result.” One of the first challenges encountered in the development of Riverlands was its location. The sheer scope of the property necessitated a local’s knowledge of the lay of the land. Given the scale of the landscape, one of the biggest challenges in terms of the architectural design was to

Behind Barn Doors continued from page 23 stories as they re-lived their experiences! The idea was to take the best elements of those barns and translate them into this environment to create a facility that meets the horse’s needs and that was adaptable to support a number of sport horse related activities and disciplines. Being client friendly was also top of the list because, given our location, we knew that clients would want to make a day of it if given the chance, and possibly visit with their families. As everyone who’s visited Pemberton knows, there’s a lot to do here if you like the big outdoors in addition to the Whistler ski resort being on our doorstep.” The impressive list of amenities at Riverlands make it more than just a pretty face. When it came to the safety and comfort of the horse, no expense was spared. The barn is complete with full alarm and fire suppression systems covering the stalls, which are also monitored by live cameras. To minimize risk of fire, bedding and hay is stored in separate buildings. “It was very important that the barns were naturally light and airy and that the horses could see outside all year round. The skylights were a great investment and the stall windows can be opened in a number of 24

ways to increase ventilation. These items added to the cost but made a huge difference to the quality of life for the horses and the staff.” Attention to detail was also maintained outside, where a variety of different sized turnout paddocks are available to support the different requirements dictated by horses training programs, gender or lifestages. All paddocks have shelters and non-freezing automatic waterers. “The horses also enjoy the health benefits of eating Riverlands hay,” explains Elizabeth. “Being on such a huge acreage has enabled us to provide them with a consistent diet of high quality hay grown on the property, where we seeded a variety of blends to suit all dietary requirements.” The indoor arena is impressive. Insulated and accessed from the main barn by a covered breezeway, the 30m x 80m ring employs many of the same philosophies that carry over from the main barn. It is lofty, airy, bright and inviting. The couple spent a great deal of time researching footing before settling on a Polymer sand that is virtually dust free and does not freeze. They made the decision to put different footing indoors and outdoors in order to recreate the challenges horses sometimes face at shows moving

from warm up ring to competition rings where there is different footing. “As it snows over the winter in Pemberton, we wanted to ensure that the horses would maintain a feeling of space and freedom in the indoor. We spent a lot of time and money researching footings and it worked-we haven’t had to change or add a thing since we’ve been open. Combined with our private roads, cross-country trails with natural fences and acres to gallop across, the farm really provides an opportunity to get out there and work on horse’s fitness and do some cross training – essential in producing happy, well rounded athletic horses.” Riverlands could be considered one of the benchmark equestrian facilities on the west coast of Canada, but more than a marvel of equestrian architecture and design, it is exciting for what it brings to the area. “It has been very rewarding to see our dream materialize. We’re still somewhat at the beginning of our journey as a barn, but in terms of the facility, it provides a great opportunity for training and coaching in the Sea to Sky corridor and for educating the next generation of horsemen and horsewomen. And now it’s down to the team — we have some great people working for us to bring it together and make it happen, and we’re looking forward to the future. You know you’ve done something right when all’s done at the end of the day and the horses are tucked up in bed, but the clients don’t want to go home and you’re looking for something, anything else to do, because you want to stay at the barn just a little bit longer”

CHOOSE A MENTOR

A

s stated last month, the E.C. coaching rubrics clearly outline what is expected within each context. Now — what about mentoring and choosing a mentor? Ideally, an individual would work through the EC Learn to Ride Program with an experienced and knowledgeable coach of their choice. Here the rider would learn all the intricacies and technicalities of learning to ride well. We in Canada are fortunate to have many excellent coaches to teach us to ride.

But what about learning to teach or coach riders? Here the coaching candidate needs a mentor who is not only knowledgeable in riding skills but more importantly the candidate needs a mentor who is familiar with our national coaching system. The candidate must be guided on how to teach and coach this demanding sport. It is not good enough for coaches to just tell riders how to do it, expecting that the student has then learned. When a candidate applies to become an EC certified coach or Instructor they must know how to write a lesson plan. They need to be familiar with the Long Term Equestrian Development Model and work within this model. They must teach to a standard within the “context”. They need to address different learning styles and have excellent teaching and/or coaching skills. They need to show respect and be worthy of respect. The candidate needs to be able to analyze performance and a) detect errors and b) correct errors as needed. Upon completion of the evaluation, the evaluators meet with each individual candidate to discuss how the day went. Here the candidates have an opportunity to express their feelings and perspectives. An Action Plan is put in place so that if the candidate has been unsuccessful in any area they know precisely what needs to be improved in order to meet the standard. Written results are also forwarded to the candidate. Finally, some advice to future EC coaching candidates: first of all, learn the skills. One cannot teach what one does not know. Secondly, spend time working with a mentor who is familiar with our national program. Be prepared to put time into learning how to effectively teach and coach! Good luck and enjoy!

range of topics relevant to the sport of Dressage and aimed at the development of horses and riders alike. The majority of Canada’s team contenders were there to partake along with other Canadian competi-

tors and professionals. The overall caliber of the competition and the show grounds is unlike anywhere else in North America. The CDI Grand Prix’s have thus far had a minimum of 30 entries! The numbers are comparable to Europe! This is very, very exciting for the sport as a whole, to see so much talent and enthusiasm in one place. Also, this has been a great opportunity to meet, compete against and befriend our east coast counterparts with whom we west coast riders rarely cross paths. In between horse shows, the horses live at Brilliance Stables in Loxahatchee Groves. The rural area is lined with canals that are teeming with tropical birds, turtles and alligators. We had snapping turtle walk right by the barn and have spotted 2 small alligators so far. The facilities are beautiful and the training has been excellent. Outside of the usual training regime, Kat and Ashley had the opportunity to ride with Dirk Glitz, a German trainer based out of California. Karen has also trained with Volker Moritz, who is a member of Dressage Canada’s team of experts, and she has also worked with Lars Petersen at his beautiful facility in Ashley Moore on Bjorn H at the White Fences. White Fence Horse Show. The horse shows thus far have been very successful for all three of us! This month’s show schedule is much more rigorous and we are looking forwww.gaitpost.com

celebration of education conference a success! T hanks in part to a Canadian Pony Club grant, our BCLM region enjoyed a resoundingly successful Celebration of Education Conference held February 1–2 in Langley, BC. We hosted the BC Island, and BC Interior North regions, as well as friends and family. Our venue was filled to capacity at 150+ registered guests and clinicians. The saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”, combined with a living breathing “Painted Horse”, gave people a perfect picture of the internal workings of a horse. Along with this anatomically correct picture, other visual tools were used to illustrate how the digestive tract works and how illness caused by ignorance can be prevented. their own horses, reinforcing their understanding on how to promote and maintain a healthy digestive tract. Building on the painted horse presentation was a second lecture on feeds, feeding and environment, which provided supporting information and practical suggestions on how to keep your horse healthy, especially relevant in the current sub-zero temperatures. Lectures were interspersed with hands on activities and demonstrations; attendees enjoyed inspiring freestyle dressage performances, inhand showmanship, long lining, and a jumper round. “How to walk a course”, brought everyone to

their feet. Wave after wave of students practiced “striding” a set 12'–24' distance, then repeated this without the aid of a placing pole or measuring tape. With repetition and explanation, an excited buzz rose from the crowd as they discovered the concept of measuring a distance — this was an epiphany to many — a mystery unveiled! The lecture continued in the warm lounge with a question and answer period on rules and regulations, which provided more insight into the vast “official” rules related to competition. Hands down, BCLM has the best innovative, interactive and entertaining method of learning in the form of Quiz Games like Pyramid, Jeopardy, Pictionary, and Charades, which our winning BCLM Quiz Kids proudly demonstrated. Observers roared with laughter, fully involved in the games all the while learning more about horse physiology, handling, and tack, proving that having fun is great way to learn! Participants, demonstrators, and clinicians, www.gaitpost.com

ranging in age from seven to 75, dined on fresh gourmet sandwiches by Cobs Bread, prepared by BCLM volunteers. Fresh fruit, sweet breads, and beverages helped keep everyone focused, satisfied, and fulfilled. This event was truly a wonderful learning experience for all attendees, rounded out with a generous variety of speakers and demonstrations, including a display of tack and equipment in our own ‘ID’ room. We clearly hit the mark with our first BCLM Education & Celebration Conference. BCLM Pony Club and Canadian Pony Club are volunteer run organizations. Without people who step forward and take on events, activities that are as fulfilling as this event has been would never happen. BCLM offers our thanks and gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this weekend. Thank you on behalf of BC Lower Mainland Pony Club.

Clinic Review continued from page 33 derbird Show Park for hosting and sponsoring the 3rd Annual Dressage Through the Levels Symposium!

BLING GOES TO SCHOOL Submitted by Eleanor Klawer I have participated in several clinics with Ellen Bontje over the last few years, on several different horses, and continue to be impressed with how consistent her message of harmony is to the rider, and how kind and understanding she is to the horses. This year I rode Bling with Ellen, and in the symposium we did First Level 34

march 2014

Test Three. Anyone who knows Bling knows this was a challenge. Bling is special — short bus kind of special at times, but from day one (I bred him and take full responsibility/blame for him), he has had a cocksure attitude, and has always made me laugh even when wanting to murder him. He is a force to be reckoned with and has an ego that can be spotted from space. To be described as a juvenile delinquent or requiring buckets of Ritalin is being kind to our Bling. Bling has been called, among other things unmentionable, a bad date, as he is always trying to remove people’s clothing, and our working students became known as “Bling’s squeaky toys”. You get the picture. Bling is like no other horse I have ever encountered, but he always comes to work with his ears forward. Bling has taken a lot of time to mature physically and especially mentally, but has been worth the wait. It was a perfect convergence of factors — In September, I sold the gelding I had been showing, Bling grew up enough to tolerate Dressage, and Ellen came to town in November. Being a grandson of her Olympic horse, Silvano, didn’t hurt, but Ellen seemed to genuinely like the horse, and he certainly liked her! We started walk/canter/walk transitions on a volte around Ellen, and when he understood, she praised him and walked out to pat him. The video is very funny to watch because after that, after every transition, he would turn his head to look at her as if to say “Did you like that?” She understood him and he wanted her approval…that is her strength with horses, I think. I had one lesson with Ellen before the symposium, and she looked sympathetically at me when I told her Ali had persuaded me to demo the First Level Test Three. It was a stretch, no doubt. He learned the canter loop three days before we rode the test, and had never done a Dressage test before. It promised to be at least entertaining, and I warned friends not to sit in the first row. Lorraine

MacDonald was very tactful in her comments, and I thought the judge was generous — I was a busy, busy woman up there. At the end of the test, and Lorraine’s encouraging comments (I think she thought I would be devastated by the test), I said to Ellen “That was his best test EVER!” which it was, being his first. I am sure Lorraine thought I was a little off kilter because I was beaming broadly after the test. I was tickled pink by his performance! Being at Thunderbird for the first time, with a big crowd and the accompanying noise and movement made no difference to Bling whatsoever. He was no cheekier there than at home, and to be honest, I think he liked having an audience. My old FEI horse would have been in spasms going around that ring… We came away from the clinic and symposium with a sense of confidence and purpose (though Bling’s purpose may be quite different from mine), and on talking to other riders, coaches, and auditors, I think most felt the same. This is a wonderful format, and Ellen an excellent coach. The fact that she is here every year at least twice allows for some continuity and familiarity which goes a long way in the learning process. The symposium shows progression in several ways: in each test ride as the coaching and comments improve the ride, in progression through all the levels for the weekend, and also shows horse and rider progression from one year to the next, as many riders return the next year at the next level. Everyone should plan to attend consecutive years — it shows best what Dressage is all about, and not just grinning idiots on hyperactive chestnuts. Next year, Third Level, what the heck. We’re goin’ for it. It’s good to have goals. No surcharge for entertainment. Thank you to Horse Council BC and Ali Buchanan for making it happen, and for inviting Bling and me to the party. SOME MORE POSiTiVE EXPERiENCES AT THE HCBC SYMPOSiuM: I am so happy that we have such a productive and positive symposium to learn from. My students, Kim Spencer and Bounce P (adult amateur) www.gaitpost.com

and Hannah Rae Beaulieu on Pharaoh (FEI Junior) were able to see where they are at before the show season begins. The positive feedback from Ellen and Lorraine really helped their confidence and gave them a boost to continue to train and work hard!! — Submitted by Andrea Taylor The symposium provided a great opportunity to introduce my horse Wilhelm to the Prix St Georges test and establish a baseline for where he was at in front of an FEI judge. I found it beneficial to hear Lorraine’s comments and marks as I was riding; it allowed me to make relevant changes immediately within each movement. As a clinician Ellen’s experience is invaluable and she always provides riders with effective exercises to improve performance. We have worked together for many years so I appreciated that the format of the symposium allowed us to discuss my horse’s specific needs in order to create a positive, confidence-building experience for him. — Submitted by Sandra Verda-Zanatta Save the Date for Next Year! Orion continued from page 21 don, and the next spring were the reserve combination for the 2013 World Cup Final. “The last Grand Prix where Orion and I competed was in Poland in November, and we won,” she says. “It truly was the best Grand Prix that the two of us had ever completed.” CONQuERiNG THEiR FEARS, TOGETHER As special as these achievements are to Pia, what matters more to her is the bond that she and Orion developed. “The reason it worked so well between Orion and me is because we both needed each other, which created a strong bond between us. He had been for sale for almost two years when I got him. He needed someone who believed in him, and I needed a Grand Prix horse to show me the ropes at the top level. Orion and I both had trouble with our nerves. We both really depended on each other; it was through this mutual trust that we learned to gather strength and courage from one other. And it was this trust that allowed us to shine brightly as a team.” Leslie remembers that Orion’s greatest quality was a work ethic that never failed, not even during his most fearful moments. “You could always trust him to go there and do it. He would never quit. ‘No’ was just not in his vocabulary.” The greatest lesson Pia learned from Orion was to enjoy the journey, including every low moment along the way. “When we were able to finally tackle our fears it made the success that much more meaningful, and brought us even closer together.” When asked about her disappointment that WEG is no longer a goal for this year, Pia believes there is something else that is much more important. “Just because I was planning on Normandy, Orion didn’t know that. All he knew was that he was in great shape, that he was the number one horse in the barn, and he most certainly knew he was the king of my heart. Orion had the best life that I could give him, and that means a whole lot more to me than my personal goals.” Pia’s journey with Orion was made possible with the support of many people along the way. “The list of people I would like to thank is endless, but the one individual who stands out like www.gaitpost.com

no other is, of course, Leslie, who trained Orion and made it possible for us to become a team.” Pia is also grateful to Heike Kemmer, who trained her and Orion to many of their successes. Pia’s boyfriend Lars was at her side during her last moments with Orion at the vet hospital. “Lars organized a bracelet to be made from Orion’s tail hair. I will wear this bracelet every single time I ride down the centre line from now on. It will forever remind me to fight with all my heart, just like my warrior Orion always fought for me.”

ancouver’s Tiffany Foster and Victor claimed victory in the $125,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round V – Section B held Thursday, February 6, at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. Two weeks earlier, the pair enjoyed the exact same placing, winning the $34,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round III – Section B on January 23. In what was the largest starting field in the history of the WEF Challenge Cup, 116 horses attempted the first round track set by 2012 London Olympic course designer Bob Ellis. A total of 30 were successful, including the three Canadian entries of Foster riding Victor, Eric Lamaze aboard Zigali P S and Yann Candele with Showgirl.

All three would repeat their faultless form in the jump-off, but Foster showed the men how it was done, putting the pedal to the metal and slicing all the turns to stop the clock in 44.04 seconds. Twelve more horses would follow, with only 2012 Olympic team gold medalist Ben Maher of Great Britain posting a faster time of 43.44 to win Section A with Urico, and putting Foster in the top spot in Section B. “He is really confident and comfortable here,” said Foster of Victor, her partner of the past four seasons and her 2012 Olympic mount. “He’s really fast, and now it’s getting fun because I know him so well and I can go really fast with him! thrilling Furusiyya opener at Al Ain; Qatar and Saudi Arabia qualify for Final February 6, 2014: On a day that was filled with many surprising twists and turns, the Ukrainian team won the opening leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping 2014 series at Al Ain (UAE). It was no simple triumph, as they had to battle to the bitter end against a powerful challenge from Qatar that forced a two-way jump-off against the clock. The Qatari side lost the top step of the podium by the narrowest of margins at the end of the day, but are on the road to the Furusiyya 2014 Final in Barcelona (ESP) in October along with the third-place side from Saudi Arabia, so for both these countries it is already “mission acwww.gaitpost.com

Artisan Farms also owns Lamaze’s mount, Zigali P S, who placed third in Section A, and are part of the Watermark Group that owns Candele’s mount, Showgirl, who was fourth in Section B. “I have to give all the credit to Eric,” explained Foster, 29, following her victory. “Since last September, I don’t jump Victor at home anymore; only Eric rides him. He does all the work and I get all the glory!” Foster has also been enjoying incredible success with her entire string of competition mounts, including the up-and-coming horses Melody des Hayettes Z and Brighton, all owned by Artisan Farms. “I have a super group of horses and I have to thank Andy and Carlene Ziegler and Artisan Farms,” said Foster, who is based with Artisan Farms in Wellington, Florida, and Vrasene, Belgium. “They are unbelievable owners, and I am really happy that their support is paying off!” Based on their success in the $125,000 WEF Challenge Cup Round V, Foster, Lamaze and Candele are all qualified for Saturday night’s $370,000 CSI5*-W World Cup Grand Prix, presented by Rolex.

The London 2012 Olympic bronze medal winning team from Saudi Arabia looked the ones to beat as the competition got underway, and seemed set to cruise home with one of the two available spots for the series Final on offer at this single qualifying event for countries in the Middle East region. But the uncharacteristic elimination of pathfinder Ramzy Al Duhami got things off to a shaky start, and their 21-fault finishing score left them vulnerable. Discipline Reports continued from page 41 opener, but only four completed. Syria slotted into fourth place with 34 faults while the UAE, already lying fifth after the first round, retired from round two. Meanwhile it was all over for Jordan by the halfway stage after elimination for two of their four riders. Only three countries — Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates — were chasing the two qualifying spots. Many of the riders were making their 5-Star Nations Cup debut, so course designer, Frenchman Frederic Cottier, had the difficult task of creating a track that would suit both first-timers and others with immense experience. He found the key in a track that didn’t prove easy for either, long distances to big oxers leading to numerous mistakes, and problems for some at the water jumps despite the helpful addition of poles on top. The water-ditch at four led to a wide oxer at five on a long distance, and this proved the undoing of many. That was followed by the one-strided triple combination — vertical, oxer, vertical —

at six, and another wide oxer at seven. There was another long run from the water at eight to the oxer at nine and then a left-handed swing to the vertical three from home which was followed by the tricky penultimate double and finally a vertical to bring them home. The biggest surprise of the opening round, however, was the error made by the hugely experienced Al Duhami who, having cleared the oxer at five, turned left-handed to fence 10 instead of swinging wider and running down to the triple combination at six. There was a gasp of disbelief when he jumped the last three fences only to hear the bell ring for elimination — not the start that the country whose Equestrian Fund is so generously sponsoring this hugely successful new series was expecting. And when HRH Prince Abdullah Al Saud and the lovely grey, Davos, left the oxer at fence two on the floor and Kamal Bahamdam’s Noblesse des Tess met the oxer at nine on a very long stride to have that down, then the five faults collected by anchorman, Abdullah Al Sharbatly and Unique brought the Saudi firstround total to 13. As round two got underway it seemed it really should be a walk in the park for the Ukrainians, even though they had only a one-point advantage, but Rivetti’s Vivant lowered the third element of the combination and the oxer at nine before Onishchenko returned with 15 on the board. The fabulous mare, Carlina, that was so successful for Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer before being sold to the man who has created the newlook Ukrainian side, had been superb on her first tour of the track, but this time had two down before Onischenko decided to circle before fence nine which added a further five faults to his tally. So when Ferenc Szentirmai and Quickdiamond followed their opening clear with a mistake at the bogey fence nine and then Kirchhoff concluded with a single time penalty, the scoreboard showed a total of 13 faults after two rounds. Exactly the same as the Qataris who piled 12 further faults onto their scoreline despite another wonderful clear from Al Thani and his bay mare. It was a real surprise when Al Rumaihi

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

provided seven of those faults with Palloubet D’Halong who initially seemed to have established a very nice relationship with his new rider. Al Ajami had lowered two fences while Al Emadi collected five faults before Al Rumaihi set off for the second time, knowing that another clear would now clinch it for his side. But the lines of communication between horse and rider suddenly broke down on the turn to the vertical at fence 10 where the chestnut gelding fell into a trot and then, completely disorganized, couldn’t jump the fence which was now right under his neck. With Ukraine and Qatar on level pegging after two rounds, the addition of eight more faults would see Saudi Arabia already settled into third place as the jump-off began. Rivetti was chosen to take on Sheikh Al Thani against the clock and, first to go, the Qatari rider produced a brilliant turn from the oxer at five to the vertical at ten to stop the clock on 27.24 seconds in a supercool and typically beautifully-ridden round. But Rivetti is a master at speed, and although the 16-year-old Vivant had made a double-error in the previous round, there would be no mistake this time out as they scorched home 0.72 seconds quicker. “It is just the start we were looking for,” said Ukrainian team manager, Najib Chami, afterwards. “This is our first show for the year and we’re glad to have made it. We are building our team ahead of our Division 1 shows,” he explained. Ukraine will take no points from the competition because they compete in Europe Division 1, the most high-profile of the four Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping leagues that will be staged across the globe over the coming months. Former Hungarian rider, Ferenc Szentirmai, is looking forward to the start of the European season. “The team plans to go to La Baule (FRA) and Rome (ITA) and this is a very big year for us” he said. He has been with the Ukrainian team for four years now but pointed out, “I had to wait two years before I could compete in Nations Cup and World Cup competitions so this was a big www.gaitpost.com

day for me!” He was delighted with the performance of his horse, Quickdiamond. “Something happened to my other horse so I had to ride Quickdiamond today even though he has never competed at this level. I was very happy with him” the rider said. Team anchorman, Ulrich Kirchhoff who claimed individual gold for Germany at the Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA) in 1996, said, “We took of a bit of a risk, but we were able to deal with it as we have the experience. In the end we pulled it off and it was very good.” And the result was a delight for the businessman who has brought riders from a wide variety of countries together to create the Ukrainian side. “For me this show has been a big success. It is my first FEI Nations Cup competition at 5-Stars. We had a great result in the first round and I’m very happy for this. It’s a great way to start (the year). MCLAiN WARd ANd WINGS SOAR TO ViCTORY iN $34,000 SPY COAST FARM 1.45M SPEEd CLASS February 5, 2014: The 2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF) began its fifth week of competition on Wednesday with a win for two-time U.S. Olympic Team Gold Medalist McLain Ward and his mount, Wings, in the $34,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.45m speed class. Shane Sweetnam (IRL) and Cyklon 1083 led the way through a large part of the class, but were bested by Ward and Wings at the very end and finished in second place. Week five of the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival, sponsored by Rolex, ran February 5-9, 2014. The week featured CSI-W 5* competition, including the $125,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 5 on Thursday afternoon, the $34,000 G&C Farm 1.45m on Friday, the $370,000 FEI World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix FEI CSI-W 5* presented by Rolex on Saturday night, and the $84,000 Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Classic on Sunday afternoon. The FTI WEF, held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, FL, features 12 weeks of worldclass competition through March 30, awarding $8 million in prize money. Great Britain’s Robert Ellis is the course designer in the International Arena at PBIEC for week five. Ellis set the track for 67 entries in the $34,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.45m speed class with 17 clear rounds on course. McLain Ward and

Wings got the win with a time of 58.82 seconds. Shane Sweetnam and Spy Coast Farm LLC’s Cyklon 1083 finished second in 59.04 seconds. Darragh Kenny (IRL) and Postage Stamp Farm LLC’s Prof de la Roque placed third in 59.26 seconds, and Peter Wylde (USA) finished fourth in 60.52 seconds aboard Winley Farm’s Wiesielottie. Ward had an extra token of good luck in his pocket for Wednesday’s class in the form of a small crystal that he had been given by Canada’s Tiffany Foster. He has had some top finishes over the last few weeks, but kept having an unlucky rail that kept him out of the winner’s circle. As Ward left the arena after his win, he pulled the crystal out of his pocket, stopping for a photo with Foster. The crystal just may have had a positive effect. “We had a little inside joke,” Ward laughed. “Tiffany says I never smile, so she gave me a crystal the other day and she said it would bring happiness. I have won two out of three classes since I have had it, so we are all giving the credit to the crystal.” Ward has had some great rounds with his veteran mount Wings, a 16-yearold KWPN gelding by Lexicon x Columbus, and was happy to finally get the win with him on Wednesday. “He has just been a little unlucky,” Ward acknowledged. “He has had a little ‘fourfault-itis,’ but he has been jumping really well. He has had the fastest time in two other big classes with some cheap four faults. He is a good old horse. He knows the job. He’s careful, and he is always fun to ride.” It seemed like the time of Shane Sweetnam and Cyklon 1083 might not be beat as the class went on, but Ward and Wings put their experience together and did it with ease. “He is a very fast horse,” Ward described. “He has a big stride, and he is quite quick. I just tried to be really neat everywhere. I was fast from jump one to two, and he just covers the ground very easily. He doesn’t waste much time.” “He is a funny horse,” Ward said of Wings. “He is what they call ‘ever green’ if you ever saw it. He is afraid of everything, and he is 16 years old now.” “I bought him actually last year for my wife and he ended up being a little too careful for her, and I kind of took over

the ride. The first two shows didn’t go very well and since then he has won a class at almost every show he has gone to, so I am not giving him back,” Ward laughed. “He is a little quirky, a little spooky, he is a little bit his own character, but he has quality, which always pays off.” Ward commented on Bob Ellis’s course, noting, “I like Bob’s courses. They typically can be a little twisty, so you need a very rideable horse, but he is very good and this is a big week. It was right on height, which is what you would expect. We are trying to make a plan with these bigger shows and have the horses come in fresh and ready to compete, so it was a nice start.” A $6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m speed class was also held on Wednesday with a win for Yann Candele (CAN) and Carolla Z, owned by Liz Currie. Week five of the 2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival will continue on Thursday with the $125,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 5 in the International Arena.
