NEW Bits! The end of summer A

s some of you may already know, the Gaitpost Magazine has been sold, to me, Eleanor Klawer, as of October 1st, 2014. I have been the Editor of the Gaitpost for almost three years, and am thrilled to have this opportunity to take the position to the next step. Huge thanks go to Post Publishers, who started the Gaitpost back in 2001, and who have entrusted me to carry on their tradition of publishing excellence with their magazine. Acting as Editor for these past years has been a wonderful experience. I have been coaching for 25+ years, and running my own equestrian centre for 17. The Gaitpost position, which started as a temporary fill-in for the past Editor’s maternity leave, was a huge step out of my normal working routine, and an incredibly steep learning curve; it was, as it turned out, a really welcome one. I found a new form of creativity — coaching well requires its own form of creativity, no doubt — that felt right. I rediscovered how much I love to write, which had gotten lost somewhere along the way over the years. This job is the perfect blend of my passions — horses, reading and writing. I am fortunate to have found my dream job, and am excited about the future with Gaitpost Magazine. So where is the Gaitpost going? I think the Gaitpost is ideally positioned to help promote the horse industry, from grass roots to Grand Prix. I think we need to see and hear about the

achievements of kids on ponies, amateurs on their beloved horses, and the pros in the international ring, everywhere. I would love to have more input from our readers across Canada — send us your stories, happy or sad, and your photos that make you smile or think “Are they nuts??” You know the stories about your horse that have you and your barn friends rolling in the aisle? Share them with us. Consider us your extended barn family! The Gaitpost has always focussed on the FEI disciplines, but we would like to hear from other horse sport organizations as well. The longer I am in this industry, the more I realize that the similarities between the disciplines, when well done, are far more numerous than the differences. If you want your sport to gain more recognition, send us your show results, clinic reports, or year-end championships! The Gaitpost will get the word out for you. Let’s make riders’ names household words, like those of hockey players and golfers. Do you think there is anyone in the Netherlands who doesn’t know who Anky or Gerco are? The Gaitpost is also developing its online presence. We have updated our website at www.gaitpost.com, which now has greater clarity and ease of navigation. We have also updated the Photo Ad submission page online, and readers can interact with Gaitpost Magazine more easily through the website and Facebook.

We like to have a little fun each month, too. I have always felt that the Gaitpost is unique among horse magazines, as it has personality, some flair, and a sense of humour. I encourage everyone to send us your best stories and photos, and make the Gaitpost your magazine even more. Enjoy the ride! Eleanor Klawer

headlinenews Bit by Bit In Memoriam: Marie-Helen Lessard (1965-2014) September 30, 2014: The Canadian equestrian community is saddened to learn of the loss of Marie-Helen Lessard, 49, and her husband Steven Ratz, 57. On September 28, 2014 they passed away in a traffic accident. Marie-Helen, commonly referred to by her nickname MH, was a strong advocate in the development of the Canadian coaching program, a keen participant in Eventing and Dressage competitions and a revered instructor to her many students. She was a leader in the equestrian community and enjoyed much success running Eventing and Dressage shows at her farm, Equus 3D Equestrian Centre. Her many accomplishments included coaching, organizing competitions, volunteering, competing and officiating. She had recently achieved her FEI Eventing Level 1 steward accreditation, in addition to her English Competition Coach certification, Equine Canada Basic Dressage, Para-Dressage judging status and steward accreditations. With her exceptional foundation of experience, Marie-Helen was also the Chair of Dressage Canada’s Competitions Committee, sat on the Sport Council’s Competitions Committee, was a member of the Dressage Canada Board, and was an Equine Canada Learning Facilitator. “Marie-Helen was a vital part of the coaching program,” said friend and fellow coach Victoria Andrew. “She was one of those busy people who always got the job done. No matter how many events she was running, shows she was judging, committees she was working on or projects she was involved with, she always had time.” She is remembered by many in the equestrian community. Her undeniable commitment to all facets of the equine industry never went unnoticed. She continuously demonstrated her strong support of equestrian sport through her actions. Both Marie-Helen and her husband were educators. She taught French at Centennial Hylands Elementary School in Shelburne, ON. Her beloved husband was a vice-principal who had recently transferred to a new school, Westside Secondary School, in Orangeville, ON. They were supportive and loving parents of their two sons, Sebastien and Derek. 10

October 7, 2014: Legendary horseman George H, Morris was honoured on Saturday with the dedication of the main International Arena at Tryon International Equestrian Centre (TIEC). The dedication occurred prior to Amanda Flint of Long Valley, NJ victory in the $100,000 Salamander Resort and Spa Grand Prix at TIEC in Tryon, North Carolina. Mark Bellissimo, Managing Partner of Tryon Equestrian Partners, commented on the amazing transformation. “Our partnership had a vision to transform this property into one of the world’s great equestrian centres that would pay tribute to all those individuals that love horses, horsemanship, and the equestrian lifestyle. I am confident that this facility will become a major economic engine and generate tens of millions of dollars of economic impact into the local economy as well as create thousands of jobs in the Carolinas over the next 3-5 years.” During the dedication of the International Ring, George Morris commented, “I can tell you, this is world class. Due to my age, I have been to every horse show in the world and I can compare this to the great horse shows of Europe and Calgary, this is of that class, and will only get better and better.” In Memoriam — Cagney (1980-2014) October 3, 2014: Equine Canada and the Canadian Equestrian Team extend our heartfelt condolences to Eric Lamaze and everyone at Torrey Pines Stables on the passing of their beloved Irish Sport Horse gelding Cagney. Brought to Canada by Doug Henry, the statuesque Irish Sport Horse gelding was born in Ireland in 1980 and was sired by the famous Registered Irish Draught stallion Clover Hill. Bought by Eddie Creed for Lamaze, Cagney was quickly syndicated and later donated to the

Linde

insley Vince had spent years moving her business and clients from one barn to another before making the decision to break ground on a facility in 2005 in Burlington, ON, at the base of the beautiful Niagara Escarpment. Vince has travelled around the world riding for Canada and to her credit has an extensive list of highlights from her competitive career. As a junior, she won the CEF Medal at the Royal Winter Fair and earned 2nd place in the ASPCA Maclay Finals, she has made three World Cup Finals appearances, is a two-time Canadian Show Jumping Champion, and was named OHJA Jumper Trainer of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2012. “We

had stabled at many facilities throughout North America and Europe and had a good idea of what we liked and didn’t like,” she explains of developing her list of ‘must-haves’ for her facility, Linden Ridge. “Initially we only knew what kind of concept we were after, which included lots of light, good air flow, and privacy if the horses wanted it or the ability to socialize if they didn’t. We wanted to build something of our own that met all our needs to train, produce and develop horses and riders for all levels of competition.” Vince enlisted the help of longtime family friend and former co-worker, Mike Barker, who has in the past worked for Eric Lamaze and is

en Ridge someone that Vince praises for having operated in every facet of the horse industry. Barker, who also has experience working with Dutch Masters Construction, is the founding principal of Shift, a landscape architecture firm within which he offers services for equine facility design in addition to rural, residential, and urban projects. “I am not exclusively an equine facility designer,” he explains, “which I believe is helpful as it allows me to look at facilities from multiple view points. I understand the needs of horses and understand horse sport, but I can bring a fresh perspective from other types of projects.” What was developed on the Vince family’s www.gaitpost.com

Trinity Farm is a contemporary, clean, and horsefriendly facility that offers amenities to best develop and maintain horses at all levels who are happy and sound. Set on 32 acres, the 22-stall barn features 12x12 stalls with Classic Equine designed stall fronts that allow the horses to extend their heads into the aisle and socialize if they wish. Stalls are rubber-matted or equipped with ‘Softstall’ mats, doors are lined with rubber to prevent injury, and each stall provides a large window to maximize airflow and provide an open, relaxed feeling for the horses. “We get

Behind Barn Doors continued from page 15 a lot of comments on the rubber floor tiles,” says Vince. “They are super comfortable for people and horses to work on. In addition, they have the added bonus of being a huge benefit to safety — if a horse ever spins, runs, or gets loose, they don’t slip on the surface.” The high ceilings and fans create a bright and airy atmosphere and minimize the intense heat so common in Southern Ontario during the summer months. The aisles themselves are constructed with rubber-brick ‘Softstep’ tiles, manufactured by Champagne Edition, and the barn is outfitted with Dipterra’s organic insect control system, which uses the oil from marigolds to provide non-toxic protection from flies and mosquitos. Utmost thought and 16

November 2014

attention to every detail was taken to ensure the comfort and safety of the horses and to ensure maximum efficiency for humans with the facility’s construction and design. The state-of-the-art facility boasts large 115' x 225' outdoor all-weather ring with freedraining base and a customized Shift Landscape designed sand and fibre mix footing. Throughout design and development, Vince believes the choice of footing and the ability to maintaining consistent and safe rings were her biggest priorities. The decision to use Shift footing came at a cost — Vince temporarily sacrificed the construction of Linden Ridge’s indoor arena. “We were one of the first facilities in Ontario to have this free-draining, irrigated, European-style footing,” she explains. “It is expensive but worth every penny. When we made the decision to go with that system, we had to cut out a large piece of the budget somewhere else to make up for the expense, and we decided to put the indoor on hold. We are fortunate enough to be able to do things from scratch, so we only wanted to do them once and we wanted to do them right. Although the cost was a bit tough to handle, the footing is one of the most important factors in

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

a development and training facility. The nature of what we do dictates that we spend most of our time outside. Getting the rings right, so that we could train properly for the majority of our competitions, was hugely important. Rain or shine, the footing is great.” Linden Ridge also features a grass jumping ring with fences that mimic those found in the hunter derbies and natural obstacles found in Grand Prix rings around the word. In addition to all of this, there is access to the trails on the surrounding properties. When choosing an aesthetic tone for the facility, Vince tried to work with the natural surroundings and not overpower what was already a stunning backdrop. “We are blessed to be located in such a beautiful area,” she explains. “We tried to construct a facility that did not take away from what was put there by nature. We tried to work with greys to echo the stone on the escarpment, and we tried to keep the facility as green and open as possible.” The family felt strongly that they should make every effort to reduce their footprint on the land and be as environmentally conscious as possible throughout construction. An abundance of trees, bushes and grass have been planted around the facility, www.gaitpost.com

and Vince believes that in addition to it being better for the horses and environment it also provides an oasis for the clients. “The farm is a place where clients are as happy and relaxed as the horses; it is a tranquil, rural escape that is easily accessible from multiple communities and city centres.” Other environmental initiatives taken include the installation of automatic light switches to avoid the use of extra electricity; high ceilings with low energy fans throughout the barns to circulate air and regulate temperature; and the use of energy star appliances. The family is doing their part, and understands the value of farm land in an industry that relies heavily on natural space for its most valuable participants. “The driving force from an aesthetic point of view was to keep it modest but sophisticated,” explains Barker of the design. “This was influenced by the fact that I knew the site very well. The property is at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, so trying to compete with that from an architectural point of view is difficult if not impossible — especially with a horse barn. The barn is not ornate and as the landscape matures I think this is proving to be the correct decision.

Behind Barn Doors continued from page 17 The farm is starting to develop a great feel and is not an object out of place with the landscape. The consideration was to allow for phasing over multiple years; this was planned into the original concept so it could happen efficiently and not end up as a haphazard finished farm.” The second phase of construction began in 2007. The Grand Prix field was stripped and relaid with amended soil, there was the addition of another 10 stalls, two additional grooming stalls, a second tack room for the clients, an equine treadmill area, drains in the floors of the two new wings, expanded storage areas, two more sand paddocks and two additional small grass paddocks. In 2009, a gazebo and outdoor seating area was added around the outdoor ring. Plans for the future include the indoor arena, indoor hot-walker and round pen. “These things take time to do ‘right’,” says Vince, “so we have to be patient and go one step at a time. Because we don’t have an unlimited budget, there are still many more stages to go.” Vince is proudest of several features at the facility, and notes that, save for a few minor changes, the collective vision changed little throughout the process of design and construction. “We have a lot of rooms in the barn,” she laughs. “At first, it was something we chuckled about but we use them all so much!” One of the most well thought-out features is the turn-out room, which is home to dusty halters, turnout blankets, fly masks and boots. “These things never had a place in any farm we were at before. They always were somewhere looking messy or getting stuffed, wet, somewhere. They now have their own room where they remain organized and out of sight.” There is a horse show equipment and storage room; a bright and airy laundry room with drainage in the floor and drying racks mounted on the walls; separate wash racks and grooming stalls, the partitions between which double as storage for brushes, supplies, equipment and also act as saddle racks; waterproof supply cupboards in the corner of the wash racks which were custom made and ordered from Flor18

ida; and a watering system that is efficient and eliminates any wrestling with hoses but are still manually filled to track water intake. “A place for everything and everything in its place”, Barker explains with pride. Vince even found a solution to a problem she frequently encountered in the chilly north: mucking. “In the morning the doors would all have to be opened, changing the temperature in the barn dramatically,” she explains. “The horses that were dressed for the closed-door climate would freeze. Next, tractors were frequently driven down aisles, which would fill the barn with fumes.” Her solution was to build a tractor room in one corner of the barn, where the tractor is parked down on an incline, and to muckout twice a day using wheelbarrows. “The whole system stays out of sight, with no fumes, and no change of temperature; it is a clean, simple, and efficient way to muck.” “Our facility is always, and likely will always be, a work in progress,” explains Vince, “but we wanted to achieve a safe environment that was easy for the grooms and horses to work out of, and a place where the horses would be happy, feel quiet, safe and settled. We wanted to create a facility that would enable us to do the type of training we needed to be successful in developing horses and riders for all levels of competition. The barn was built to really cater to the needs of the horses and enable their development.” With all of this in mind, what is she proudest of at Linden Ridge? “Form and function. Our facility isn’t fancy but it is simple and functional — we have everything that we need. The facility allows the horses themselves and the natural beauty of the land to shine.” “Money was spent on the correct things,” adds Barker. “There is great footing; natural obstacles are properly designed, constructed and maintained so the horses are educated about them when they need to face them in the ring; grass paddocks and sand paddocks are drained and maintained to that short of dangerous weather, horses are outside for many hours each

100-Day Trainer Challenge showcased five Thoroughbred ex-racehorses as they transitioned into new careers. New Stride promoted their journey throughout the 100-days and educated the public on the athleticism and intelligence of the breed as well as their suitability as a sport horse and useful riding horse. The Challenge culminated with a Thoroughbred Showcase at Thunderbird Show Park on October 4, 2014. The end goal is placement of the five horses into permanent homes through private sale. “Thoroughbreds are such an incredibly versatile breed,” said Bill Randall, President of New Stride Thoroughbred Adoption Society. “Our Challenge showed the public what these horses are capable of doing, ultimately promoting ownership of Thoroughbreds and helping to transition more horses into new careers.” Results: 1. Margaret Woloschuk & Svana 2. Rayme McMahon & Trick of the North 3. Estelle Baker & Remembering When 4. Alicia Harper & Lend Me an Ear

Note: Keelly Reggelsen & Almost Time had to withdraw from competition due to a minor health issue. New Stride is certain they would have been formidable competitors were they able to participate in the finale. Details about the Challenge can be found online at: http://newstride.com/tb-showcase/100day-trainer-challenge. New Stride is a registered charity dedicated to finding adoptive homes and new careers for Thoroughbred racehorses. The charity was founded at Hastings Racecourse in 2002 by a group of concerned owners, breeders and backstretch workers who sought to provide a dignified retirement for as many Thoroughbreds as possible.

SOMETIMES AN ELUSIVE DIAGNOSIS

Forrest Gump said it the best and it is very easily applied to a horse showing signs of colic…colic “is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”.

O

ne of the most feared words in a horse owner’s life is hearing the word Colic. This time of year it is not uncommon to walk out to your barn at 9 or 10 p.m. to do the night check and find your beloved horse lying down in the stall. A quick check of the feed bucket shows that he didn’t eat his evening meal and the hay is strewn all around the stall. The reason is that Colic is not a specific diagnosis, but rather a symptom. The word colic is defined as abdominal pain which is most likely, but not always, related to the gastro-intestinal tract. In other words, there could be over 50 different causes of your horse’s colic. Because there are so many different types of colics they can present in many different ways. Some horses don’t eat and are very quiet, some are the type that don’t eat and get up and down 22

November 2014

while periodically looking at their sides, and some are the type that don’t eat and throw themselves on the ground and roll violently. The one thing they all have in common is “they don’t eat”. The other thing they all have in common is that the symptoms can change slowly or rapidly. Some horses start out bad and get better, while others may start out mild and become worse. Unfortunately, the degree of pain does not always correlate with the severity of the problem. These issues, along with others, make a colic case diagnostically challenging. The physical exam is usually the first step, and the first part of any good exam is a thorough history. Some of the questions you might be asked are: your horse’s age, when was the horse last seen normal and eating, when was the last bowel movement and was it normal size and

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

www.gaitpost.com

consistency, or if the horse has had previous colic episodes. There is other information that is also important to know, such as deworming, any medication, changes in hay or grain, or if there have been any other sick horses on the property. The second part of the exam evaluates the mucous membranes (gum colour and refill time), temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate and Borborygmi (also known as “gut sounds”). The colour of the mucous membranes should be pink, but can range in progressing severity from pale or white, dark red, or bluish/purple. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites can cause colic symptoms, so an increase in temperature, greater than 101.5F (38.5C) may indicate an infectious cause, while a decrease in temperature may be important in the most severe forms of colic as the horse becomes hypothermic due to cardiovascular collapse (such as “shock”). The heart rate is one of the most important indicators we have to determine degree of pain in the horse. A normal heart rate in a resting horse is between 28-36 beats per minute. A heart rate between 40-56 beats per minute is usually indicative of a mild to moderate degree of pain, while heart rates greater than 60 indicate a more severe degree of pain. Respiratory Rate is important but not a reliable indicator of pain as this can vary in each horse’s individual tolerance to pain. Borborygmi (gut sounds) are heard in the normal horse easily, frequently and consistently. The decrease or absence of these sounds is of noted importance in determining potential severity but not in telling us what is causing the colic. All of this information is giving us clues as to the severity of the problem but not necessarily the cause of the problem. When assessing the exam findings, we are trying to determine if your horse could be treated medically or if it is potentially severe enough to warrant needing surgical correction. Once again, it is unfortunate that no one single finding can tell us this answer, but it is the accumulation of these findings that help us to make these decisions. For example, a horse with a normal temperature, a heart rate of 44, normal gums, and decreased gut sounds is very different from a www.gaitpost.com

Dr. St. Laurent readies a naso-gastric tube.

horse with a normal temperature, heart rate of 60, dark pink gums and no gut sounds. The former most likely medical and the latter most likely surgical. Surprisingly enough, these two horses could both be presenting with a moderate degree of pain. Other diagnostics may be performed including, but not limited to, a rectal exam, nasogastric tube and/or ultrasound. The rectal exam will tell us about the amount of gas, impactions, displacements or torsions (twists) that may occur. This sounds simple and sometimes it is, but sometimes the findings are inconclusive. The naso-gastric tube allows us to not only administer fluids to the horse but also to see if the small intestinal tract is the problem and backing up fluid into the stomach, somewhat like a clogged pipe would back up into a sink. The ultrasound allows us to look into the abdomen in certain areas where our hands can’t reach, as well as assess whether there is fluid in the abdomen or thickened walls along certain areas of the intestine. Once again this is valuable information, however, this tool cannot examine the entire abdomen. As stated before, these exams might be able to give us an answer but they might also be inconclusive, leaving us with lots of unanswered

temperature, pulse, and respiration are all parts of the puzzle.

Vet’s View continued from page 23 questions and without a diagnosis. It is critically important for us to try and establish throughout the course of the colic symptoms whether this can be medically treated or may need surgery. The reason is that the longer the decisions are delayed, we know that the prognosis for survival can be adversely affected. If the time between colic symptoms is increasing, then your horse is most likely getting better. Likewise, if the time is getting shorter between symptoms, then the problem is getting worse. Unless symptoms and the exam findings are very severe, most likely we will try to treat your horse medically if possible. We don’t want to take your horse to surgery as much as you don’t want to take your horse to surgery. When we leave the farm your horse will do one of three things; get better, get worse, or appear to get better but then get worse again. The first two make decisions, although sometimes not easy, more decisive. One of the more difficult decisions to make is when the horse doesn’t seem to want to get better but never appears bad enough for surgery. At this point it is usually recommended to perform an exploratory 24

November 2014

to obtain a diagnosis and possible treatment. In the last 3 weeks I have seen all three types. In our regional area in British Columbia, most of the colics that we see are treated medically (sedation, Banamine, fluids), however in other regions of North America, there is a much higher percentage of horses with colic needing surgery. At Paton and Martin, we can treat your horse medically on the farm, or in the hospital where we can make informed, important, and critical decisions on a timely basis in case the need for surgery arises, thereby providing the best possible care for your horse. It is important to remember that some mild cases can turn bad quickly and some bad case may spontaneously resolve without explanation. So remember to stay calm, be patient and listen to what your horse might be telling you. Eric grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. he attended Central Missouri State University and Kansas State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in agriculture. he graduated from Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994 and began his career at Connecticut Equine Veterinary Clinic (a sport horse practice) on the East Coast. in 1998 he moved to the West Coast of British Columbia to work at Paton and associates and in 1999 became a full partner in the practice. his post veterinary training has been in Reproduction and acupuncture. dr. Martin’s drive to develop their facility was founded in his belief that the athletes in this area deserve the highest standard of care available. he is a member of the aaEP, BCVMa, CVMa, and the international Veterinary acupuncture Society. Eric’s interests include lameness and reproduction. an outdoor adventurer, he can most likely be found outside of work in the mountains or in the gym training in mixed martial arts.

Behind Barn Doors continued from page 18 day; and there are a variety of paddock sizes so those horses that aren’t comfortable outside become so over time. If there was ever a question about something that would improve the aesthetic of the farm vs. the comfort of the horses, the money went to the horses without sacrificing quality materials and thoughtful design.” What is Mike proudest of in the collaboration with his longtime friend in the development of Linden Ridge? “That we are all friends still after its construction!”

The prestigious Final is being held at CSIO5* Barcelona, in Barcelona, ESP, October 9-12, 2014. Canada handily qualified to compete in the final round following a three-way tie for third place in the first round of competition on October 9, 2014. With another technical, large course set by Santiago Varela Ullastres of Spain, Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, rode in as the first to go for Canada. The First of its Kind The Ins and Outs of Hosting North America’s First Select Online Foal Auction By Ann Daum Kustar

P

icture this: A tousle-haired techie pitching a ridiculous concept called the World Wide Web to a slick-haired suit behind a desk. Fastforward a few years — now we have a college kid explaining to a banker why he needs a loan to start a photo-sharing service where the pictures disappear forever seconds after they’re snapped. Now, that same college kid is turning down a $4-billion dollar offer from Google to buy his little app, SnapChat. So now imagine a traditional Germanparented North American Warmblood registry hosting an online foal auction, complete with iPhone-compatible bidding and daily Facebook updates. Well… why not?! The Rheinland PfalzSaar International (RPSI) decided to give it a try, and the results have been quite interesting. As the RPSI prepares to launch their 2nd Annual Select Online Foal auction, open for bidding November 11th – 16th, 2014, already interest has been strong, with 40+ entries from an impressive variety of bloodlines and breeding programs. Here’s a look at how it all started. Live auctions have traditionally been the method-of-choice in Germany for selling collec-

26

November 2014

tions of sport horses. The European verbands, or registries, host these auctions as a way to help breeders market their horses and breeding programs, as well as the registry itself, and thus continue breeding. So while the registry-hosted foal auction hadn’t been tried before in North America, the idea was a familiar one. But how to get 30-some mares and foals from all over the USA and Canada and a group of bidders together in one place to make it happen? Impossible! The distances, costs, and risks to the sellers are just too high. But add the internet and a liberal dash of Facebook, Google, Twitter and other social media to the concept of the traditional foal auction — and you have a mix that just might have the Europeans sitting up and taking notice. The most important piece of the puzzle for the RPSI, and what separates a registry-sanctioned select foal auction from any other kind of online sport horse auction, is the selection process itself. All foals entered have been personally inspected, and those in the Select section were individually invited to participate, creating a unique collection of foals being marketed in a

Canada’s Greatest Little Horse Mag

www.gaitpost.com

truly modern way. The other puzzle piece that fit everything together was the availability of great quality photos of all the foals, taken by JoAnn Cohn of the RPSI, from every site along the inspection tour and offered free of charge to members entering their foals. In the end, the planning and hard work paid off for many of the foal owners and shoppers. Jennifer and Armin Arnoldt of Dreamscape Farm in Langley, BC Canada consigned and sold two of their RPSI branded foals in the online foal auction – Bon Voyage DSF by Bon Balou, and Covert Affairs DSF by Checkmate. Armin explained what attracted him to the idea of a Select Online Foal Auction. “North American breeders need a better way to market their product. In Europe, the registries help with this, and it works out for everyone. But auctions in Europe work because they are nice and close. Here to enter a horse in a regular auction you need to take a holiday from work, get a hotel and travel across the country — and then hope the thousands you’re spending will actually pay off!” Armin said. “I thought this auction was a great idea, and had a really good result. With an online auction, what can you lose? If they don’t sell, so what? You get some exposure and marketing from it all, at a little price — how wrong can you go?” The results for the inaugural year were encouraging. Nearly 30,000 page views, bids totaling over $148,000 (not all reaching the foals’ reserves, however) and foal averages of: High Sales Price: $8,500 Avg. Total Price: $5,916.00 Avg WB: $7,341.00 Avg Pony: $4,791.00. The results for the RPSI Mid-Winter Mix Auction in January, 2014 were also promising. Total Lot Views: 20,330 Total # Bids: 197 32% Horses Sold Bids equaling a total of $150,250.00 www.gaitpost.com

High Sale: $8,500 Avg. Sale Price: $6,333.33. What’s next? The RPSI looks forward to offering the same great marketing and customer service, and a really superb variety of foals, for the 2014 Select and Open online auction in November, 2014, which looks to be even bigger than the 2013 auction. The RPSI will again offer a Mid-Winter Mix online auction in January, 2015, offering a sales venue for all ages of RPSI registered/inspected horses early part of the year, and of course the popular Stallion Service Auction in the early spring of 2015. Watch the RPSI facebook page for updated news, auction contests and more! The RPSI is excited to help bridge the gap between breeders and riders in this country, and through new programs like online auctions, help promote North American breeders and the outstanding sport horses and ponies they are producing.

We have very good horses and riders.” “It’s nice to come to a competition where the grand prix is not the only thing that is important. This is really a magical event. It is great to see all the top teams come together,” continued Lamaze. “This was an unbelievable result for our team tonight, especially in this company,” remarked chef d’équipe, Mark Laskin. “This is as difficult and prestigious as a major championship, and I’m so proud of my riders. It says a lot when we can leave Ian Millar at home, and be second in a

In a competition that epitomised the concept of the Furusiyya series, which has opened up the sport of Nations Cup Jumping to a whole new range of countries over the past two years, the talented, keen and hungry Australian quartet pushed their considerably more-experienced opponents all the way. And suddenly the boys and girls from Down-Under have staked their claim as a force to be reckoned with over the coming years.

This competition was open to the six nations that failed to qualify for tomorrow night’s gala Furusiyya Final, and it was some surprise to find the Americans and the defending Furusiyya champions from France amongst the starting line-up. The French slotted into third this afternoon ahead of Spain in fourth, Venezuela in fifth and the three-man team from Qatar in sixth and last place. With b300,000 on offer there was plenty to play for, and several Chef d’Equipes decided to give their fifth team members an outing. Margie Engle stood in for Kent Farrington in the US side while James Paterson-Robinson came into the Australian line-up in place of Edwina TopsAlexander. Kiwis triumph in Boekelo thriller but Germany are invincible as series champions October 12, 2014: New Zealand scored their second victory of the FEI Nations Cup Eventing 2014 season with a fine win in a thrilling and competitive final leg at Boekelo (NED) CCIO3*. An all-female British team ran the Kiwis close to the wire, coming second by just 1.6 penalties, but it wasn’t quite enough to regain their position at the top of the FEI Nations Cup Eventing 2014 leaderboard. Britain remained in second place overall, four points behind the series champions Germany, who clinched victory despite an unusually off day at Boekelo. France, whose Thomas Carlile took the individual honours on Sirocco du Gers, finished sixth at Boekelo but it was good enough to put them into third place in the final series standings. The British team was in the lead after Dressage at Boekelo, with the USA in second place and the Netherlands third, but an exciting day’s Cross Country over what Australian team member Paul Tapner described as “the best Sue Benson course I’ve seen” considerably re-arranged the leaderboard. There were 54 clear rounds from the 85 Cross Country starters but the ground was soft and it took until the very last rider on course, Ireland’s Joseph Murphy on Westwinds Hercules, the only rider in the competition to finish Cross Country on his Dressage score, before the optimum time of 10 minutes 30 seconds was achieved. The British achieved four good clear rounds, but time penalties eroded their lead, especially when anchorwoman Laura Collett, third after Discipline Reports continued on page 36

RMSJ ROCKS THE ROYAL WEST WITH AMY METCALFE! By Eleanor Klawer with John Anderson

J

ohn Anderson never ceases to amaze with his “Let’s make it happen” approach to everything, and yet again, he has come up with a new idea and is running flat-out with it. Amy Metcalfe, from Red Deer, Alberta, is an up and coming singer/songwriter who recently signed with Royalty Records of Edmonton. She recently released the single “My Heart Beats 1,2,3” and it is in the top 100 on iTunes. Amy approached John and Rocky Mountain Show Jumping a while ago with an interesting concept: “Rodeo always is affiliated with big country stars like Toby Keith, for instance. Why not Show Jumping?” You see, Amy is a dyed-in-the-wool horsewoman. She grew up Eventing in Alberta, and progressed to Show Jumping, with a little Dressage in there for good measure. There is a great video out there of

Amy competing at RMSJ, when she was 14, riding a paint! Rocky Mountain was her first “big show” in the Show Jumping world, and has felt an affinity ever since as a result. When Amy reached out to John, she was met with his usual enthusiasm for a great concept. This, I think, may be a partnership made in heaven. Amy is going to perform at The Royal West on opening night Friday, and Saturday, singing the anthem and doing a half hour set with a full band, and she will be back for the last weekend of the show as well. John has recorded Amy singing both the Canadian and the American anthems, for future use at his shows, and Amy is developing an album with horse-inspired songs, with John Anderson’s backing. Dedicated to Show Jumping, Amy hopes the album will ap-

peal to horse-lovers and the general public alike. Equestrians will understand the horse connection in her songs and lyrics, but they won’t be so obviously horse-involved that non-horsey people can’t relate. Her theme song, “Ready to Fly” is finished already, and the title alone elicits visions of the power and strength of a jumper. Amy dove into horses with the devotion and intensity that is proving to be a trademark of her young life. When promised a horse at 8 years old, and it didn’t materialize, Amy was determined “to be the most annoyingly persistent child possible”, and turned into a horse the moment she came home from school, dropping to all fours and cantering about the living room. Her parents saw the writing on the wall and soon bought her a horse, and Amy was on her way. She was the same way with her music. Always singing, always gravitating towards a stage, running around with a microphone, recording herself… Amy jumped in with both feet. She started piano at age 6, and picked up guitar in Grade 10. While obsessed with her music, Amy was very private about it – she was afraid it was one more reason to be bullied at school – and when her mom heard her singing a grad song that she wrote, she told her to audition to play at grad. Amy was reluctant to do so, but when her mother and her teacher conspired to make it an assignment, Amy followed through, won the audition, and her first public performance ever was in front of 4000 people in a hockey arena for grad. She hasn’t looked back. John Anderson and Amy Metcalfe are going to be a powerful combination. “John’s forwardthinking and likes to work outside of the box, which I love,” she says. “This is a collision of my two passions, music and horses, and it just feels right.” John is excited about Amy’s collaboration with Rocky Mountain Show Jumping, and is happy to bring another level of entertainment to the Royal West. A great horse show has more than just classes. “It has to entertain and engage the audience,” he believes, “and then people will keep coming back.” John also believes in giving back, as eviwww.gaitpost.com

denced by RMSJ’s donation this summer to Stars, the helicopter ambulance service that serves Alberta, and the upcoming Derby Night Gala fundraiser at the Royal West. They hope to raise over $100,000 for breast cancer research that night, as a result of selling $65 plates at the Chicago Chophouse (260+ of which are already sold!), and a silent auction including a loaded F150 from Woodridge Ford! Make sure you get to the Royal West to catch the excitement, and be sure to look up Amy Metcalfe’s music on iTunes. It is going to be a great show, in every sense of the word…

Thomas Carlile (FRA), 27, won the FEI World Breeding Eventing Championship for Young Horses on home ground at Le Lion D’Angers last year aboard Sirocco du Gers. “I have a fantastic horse,” he said. “He’s only eight and this was his first CCI3*. They don’t come much braver and more honest than him. My main aim was to give him confidence, and I was determined not to fall in the water - it was much too cold!” he added referring to the nearmiss in the first water complex when the horse tripped and the rider lost his stirrup. The combination were recently sixth in the eight-year horse class at CIC3* Blenheim (GBR). This past weekend could not have been better. It rained lightly Friday night but luckily the rest of the weekend stayed dry for us all! Saturday night, the restaurant did a $5 steak dinner for the competitors and of course on Sunday there was the popular free pancake breakfast! This time I was riding one of my upcoming horses, and a student’s horse. The Show-jumping course was a nice confidence builder for my young gelding and the cross country like usual was challenging with a tight optimum time. In the end, once again, Jack Polo and his friendly office staff did a great job making the “Mary Swanson Horse Trials” a successful one to remember! Thank you MREC and all the staff for your hard work and dedication to our sport. It is truly appreciated by everyone. — Submitted by Kerry Groot lori Moffatt & Stellaire

their Dressage but it made for a very relaxing afternoon with lots of time to Groot get Cross Country Kerry at MREC courses walked. The Cross Country offered some new questions for horses and riders as it not only had some colourful and thoughtful decoration but incorporated the hilly terrain Shea Labrenz at MREC as well. All divisions had to come down one particularly steep hill which had some riders a bit tense but they all rode it well. The hills took a bit of a toll on some of the horses that weren’t as fit as ones with maybe a bit more Thoroughbred blood in them. Horses were looking a bit “quieter” in the second half of the training and preliminary courses! Thanks to the Winship’s for putting on a fun event and supplying us with marshmallows and hotdogs for the Saturday evening bonfire party. The organizers did a great job brushing off the dust and getting back at it using a scoring and entry program that didn’t exist when the event last ran. 20th Anniversary Fall Classic Breeders Sale

High Selling Performance Horse Carousel’s Flamboyant.

High Selling 2 Year Old Elegance.

T

3-Bars Winner Tannis Skinner & Errigal.

he 20th anniversary of the Fall Classic Breeders Sale saw highs from the past few years. The average of the performance horse section improved, with the high selling horse Carousel’s Flamboyant sold to Tess Novacek of Rocky Mountain House, AB for $35,000. Bred by Carousel Ridge and expertly shown by Shauna Cook, this lovely son of Beaulieu’s Conquest received the high selling cooler from Victory Tack Shop. Three-year-old Suri KW, bred by Sheri Dumonceaux and consigned by Bernie & Doreen Kulcsar of Key Warmbloods, sold for $27,500 to Shadow Ridge Stables of Ladner, BC. This lovely daughter of Sir Gregory was capably trained and presented by Jenneke Hoogendoorn. High selling 2-year-old was Elegance bred by Dr. Heather Smith-Oberten and the Sparks Innovations cooler went to repeat purchaser Rosemary Church of Calgary. The West Hills Veterinary high selling cooler for Broodmare/Weanling/ Yearling was presented to broodmare Del Carmen bred by Shauna Cook and presented to thrilled

new owner Courtney Kremeniuk of Madden, AB. The 3-bars competition, sponsored by Horse Sport Magazine, was hotly contested and eventually won by Errigal, ridden by Tannis Skinner and owned by Malcolm Campbell. Equusure Insurance and Dudley’s Outdoor Escape sponsored the balance of the gala evening which featured a superior Dressage demonstration by Sheri Dumonceaux and her student Joanna McCarthy; a stallion showcase that included Calidostar, Tacorde, Zeno CWB, and Sovereign Hit; and, a highlight of the evening, a vaulting demonstration by the Razzle Dazzle Vaulting Club of Olds which featured members of the 2014 World Equestrian Games Canadian team. The sale saw an overall mild increase in average to $8,850. The performance horse average improved to $12,979 from $10,330 in 2013; however, the 2-year-old average experienced a dip to $4,641. The consignors brought a great product well-presented and the sale has continued to be an advantageous venue for buyers who attend.

Discipline Reports continued from page 41 ing out the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 on a high note on September 5 in Normandy, FRA. The final day of Vaulting kicked off with round two of the FEI World Pas-de-Deux Vaulting Championship at the Zenith venue in Caen, FRA. Canada had two entries return after solid performances in round one on September 4th. Todd Griffiths of Cardston, AB, and Brooke Boyd of Olds, AB were Canada’s highest placed Pas-de-Deux pair. A relatively new team, they decided to join up as a Pas-de-Deux pair less than a year ago. Together, they brought down the house with a repeat performance of their high-energy choreography set to swing music. The duo scored 7.676, bringing their tworound total to 7.674 for eighth place overall. Griffiths and Boyd were delighted with their result, especially since this was a brand new freestyle for them. Just a few months before the Games, they decided to switch up everything from their music to their choreography to

their costumes. Round one of the Pas-de-Deux marked the first time they ever performed the new freestyle at a competition. Finishing the Pas-de-Deux in 10th place overall were two-time VaultCanada National Pas-deDeux Champions, Angelique and Jeanine van der Sluijs of Olds, AB. Together, the sisters finished the two-round Pas-de-Deux championships on a total score of 6.904 for their rain-themed performance set to piano music. Later in the Eventing, the six-member Canadian Vaulting Team entered the arena one last time for an encore of their stunning freestyle in the FEI World Squad Vaulting Championship. Joining Griffiths, Jeanine, and Angelique were Haigen Pavan and Shianne Hofer from Olds, AB, as well as the team ‘flier’ for many of the lift components, Dallyn Shields of Didsbury, AB. The first full team to ever represent Canada at the Games, the six vaulters were invited forward into the Freestyle Final after finishing 10th place in the round one Freestyle on September 3rd.

Product Reviews by Eleanor Klawer

e. klawer

Follow-up: Whoa Dust Arena Dust Control

B

ack in September of 2013, I reviewed Strathcona’s dust control product called “Whoa Dust”, a non-toxic, easy to handle product that I put in my indoor arena. My findings were favourable, especially in comparison to Magnesium Chloride, the most often used arena dust control solution. It was less expensive, easier to apply, and as effective, and the bonus was that it is environmentally safe and it didn’t rot my boards and doors like the salts do. Water conservation is always an issue when on a well, and so I was very pleased with the resulting decrease in frequency of sprinkling. It isn’t a miraculous, you-will-never-sprinkle-again product, but if you really know how much water you normally apply to your footing, you will know it makes a significant difference in gallons and time. Alex of Strathcona Animal Bedding asked me to try the same product on my outdoor arena, which is about 6” of hogfuel over a sand base. It is a very large ring, and I usually do not sprinkle the footing as it is just too much water to cover that surface area, and as a result it becomes dusty after a long dry spell. I did the application as per Alex’s instructions, and dragged out the hoses, and gave it a good cover. A light

www.gaitpost.com

rain came up that night just to help us out. My assessment of the results was similar to those of the indoor – the ring held its moisture in the full sun probably four times as long as it would have in the previous also-baking-hot summer, with a little harrowing. My impression is that Whoa Dust also somehow changes the texture subtly – making it slightly “bound together” and less loose in general. Please contact Alex at 1-888-913-3150, if you have any questions regarding Whoa Dust. We all owe it to the aquifers and our neighbours to be thoughtful about our water use. EquiCrown Medical Compression Leg Wraps OK, so these are really cool. These are wraps for horses based on human medical compression bandages, technology that has been around for years for humans, and finally adapted to horses. They fit really well and, through compression, reduce swelling or stocking-up. As an overcautious horseperson, my concerns were: Could they constrict too much? No, they have very good measuring guidelines and seem to stretch just enough, consistently. Could they slip if swelling

Tack ‘n’ Tales continued from page 59 goes down? Not in a dangerous way – they are just stiff enough that they won’t slide and bind if they get loose. Do they get too hot underneath? No, not at all. Can my horse get them off? Well, if my attention-deficit Bling wasn’t able or interested, I think most horses would be fine. Can they get left on? Yes, 24/7 if necessary, and you can ride in them. Are they washable? Yes, easily into a hot washer and dryer, and this helps to regain elasticity if necessary. They are very well made, and I was very happy with the Silver wraps that seemed to clean up some scratches scabs that were lingering on my old guy in the field. Strathcona has thought of every consumer’s concerns and has an applicable policy to keep them happy, or so it seems! These wraps will be a fixture for my barn – for shipping, for showing (when the horses are stuck in a stall), and for first aid when required. Talk to Strathcona! This is a very interesting product…
