Pony Bits for the Long Trail It’s a long and windy trail ride from starting on a pony to riding in the Young Rider Championships, but it is a pretty well-worn path by now. These adorable little kids grow up so quickly to take part in the big leagues such as our BC riders that went to Kentucky this summer. There are lots of routes to choose, and you always have your horse to carry you on the way, whichever trail you pick, so no trail is the wrong one. The common line on the map is the support group that surrounds these kids, and helps point them in the right direction. Cheers to all of you! Unique. “Throughout the competition Lindsay rode accurate tests with determination and grace, making adjustments to improve each movement which was reflected in her scores and in the judges’ comments. Her commitment to the health and well-being of her horse was evident in the daily care. Her mom Liz was an amazing support; she was dedicated, detail oriented and always positive. As a coach it is always highly rewarding to be a part of a young rider’s journey, especially when it encompasses an event like the NAYRC, and I am once again grateful to have had the opportunity with Lindsay (and Liz) and am extremely proud of her accomplishments.”

t has been said that the hardest part of a major international championship actually takes place before the event even takes place. It is an enormous project to gain a place on a team for the World Equestrian Games (WEG). For 33 talented Canadian athletes and their horses, that goal has been reached. The Canadians who have earned the opportunity to compete at WEG 2014 will join the largest number of competitors from the most diverse list of nations in equestrian history at this seventh edition of the FEI’s multi12

discipline flagship event. The last two disciplines to announce the Canadian WEG Teams are also disciplines that will take place on the second week of competition in France: Show Jumping and Vaulting. bronze medalist Eric Lamaze. A total of five riders and horses are currently named to the team, but only four will ultimately be chosen to compete, with the fifth becoming the reserve combination: • Yann Candele (Caledon, ON) – Showgirl (14 year old Selle Français mare), owned by Watermark Group, • Tiffany Foster (Schomberg, ON) – Verdi III (12 year old Dutch Warmblood gelding), owned by Artisan Farms, LLC, • Eric Lamaze (Schomberg, ON) – Zigali P S (10 year old Dutch Warmblood gelding), owned by Artisan Farms, LLC, • Ian Millar (Perth, ON) – Dixson (11 year old Belgian Warmblood gelding), owned by Susan and Ariel Grange, • Chris Sorensen (Caledon, ON) – Bobby (12 year old Dutch Warmblood gelding), owned by Chris Sorensen and Britland Hughes. Lamaze’s individual bronze medal in 2010 is the only Show Jumping medal won by Canada at the WEG since its inaugural event in 1990. However, Canada has been a consistent top five finisher at the last few major Games; Canada’s Show Jumpers will arrive in Normandy with the podium in mind. Their stiffest rivals are likely to come from traditionally strong nations, such as the defending world champions from Germany, as well as the reigning Olympic champions, the British. Belgium is expected to be a strong medal contender, as is the host country France, which won silver in 2010. Canada needs to finish in the top five in order to secure an Olympic qualification for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Final Preparations The entire Canadian WEG Dressage Team has been training in Europe this summer, and all four team members have competed in European CDIs in order to be as ready as possible when they canter down centre line on August 25th and 26th. Three of the team members (Megan Lane, Karen Pavicic and Belinda Trussell) received $20,000 Canadian Dressage Athlete Assistance Program (C-DAAP) grants this spring to help them cover the enormous costs of traveling to Europe to train and compete. The strongest nations in the WEG Dressage team competition are not surprise contenders — Germany, The Netherlands and Great Britain. The most intense battle will be for individual medals, with a showdown for gold
expected to take place between Germany’s Matthias Rath on Totilas, the defending world champion horse (with his previous rider, Edward Gal), and the reigning Olympic, European and World Cup champions, Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro. Canada’s Eventing Team has had more than its share of challenges in the months leading up to Normandy, the latest being a horse substitution for team member Jessica Phoenix. A Little Romance, the horse named to the team in June, was injured in training, and has been replaced by Phoenix’s Pan Am gold medal-winning partner, Pavarotti, a 12 year old Westphalian gelding owned by Don Good. Canada’s Eventing Team needs to finish among the top six in order to gain a berth for Rio 2016. For more information on the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, visit www. Normandy2014.com. HEADLINEnews Bit by Bit gerMAn And dutcH toP HorSeS inJured August 21, 2014: the german national equestrian Federation announced their dressage team will be without Totilas at the world equestrian games in normandy. Totilas and his rider matthias rath showed impressive form during the day in training camp. shortly before the departure of the team for France, Totilas had a painful reaction to an existing splint. the team vet and the rider decided not to participate at weg for the sake of the horse. Fabienne meier Lütke, with D’Agostino, will replace matthias and Totilas. the 24 year old meier Lütke and her Hanoverian were on the gold medal team last year at the european championships. the dutch team announced that following a detailed veterinary check-up the sad decision was made: Glock rider edward gal must do without his best horse, Glock’s Undercover. earlier in team training, the son of Ferro still showed impressive form — yesterday morning however, he moved awkwardly. the vet diagnosed a problem in the cervical spine. despite physiotherapy, a slight inflammation is still causing pain for the kwPn gelding. in order to support his team, the ruling world champion edward gal will now participate with Glock’s Voice in the world equestrian games. This is just the second time in history the FEI has exonerated an athlete after a horse tested positive for a banned substance. “It is very important to the reputation of equestrian and New Zealand sport that no athlete should be knowingly involved in any act of doping,” Equestrian Sports New Zealand president Chris Hodson said in a statement. “That Jock Paget has proved his innocence, which requires a very high standard which has only been achieved in one previous case, is intensely satisfying and fully justifies the support which ESNZ has given him throughout.” In its 36-page decision, the FEI explains that a liquid supplement called LesstresseE, manufactured and distributed by Trinity Consultants, was found to contain traces of reserpine upon extensive testing. Both Jock, Kevin and other members of the New Zealand Eventing team had used the product for horses that suffered from stress at major competitions. substance case in 2009 — Jock explained he had started used Lesstresse in 2010 under the recommendation of Joe meyer, who had previously used the supplement in competition with negative testing results. the Fei’s report also shows that on multiple occasions, Jock had contacted roger Hatch, director of the product manufacturer trinity consultants, who “unequivocally confirmed” that Lesstresse did not contain any prohibited substances. after the Lesstresse testing confirmed reserpine contamination, trinity consultants agreed to a product recall. the bottles returned to the manufacturer were also independently tested and found to contain traces of reserpine, leading to the conclusion that the product had been contaminated before leaving the facility. the tribunal ultimately exonerated Jock on the basis that he established no fault or negligence for the rule violation. though the tribunal said it believes Jock did try to enhance the horse’s performance through the use of Lesstresse, that “does not necessarily mean that he is ipso facto barred from establishing the absence of fault or negligence.”
Based largely on the fact that Jock provided evidence he had consulted numerous times with the team vet and product manufacturer to ensure the supplement was free of prohibited substances — and that clifton Promise had tested negative four times after receiving the supplement — the tribunal ultimately ruled to clear Jock. Jock still loses his Burghley title, which was already stripped in april in a partial Fei tribunal ruling, as the horse competed with a banned substance in its system. the decision comes less than three weeks before Jock and clifton Promise will represent new zealand at the world equestrian games in normandy, and Jock said in a statement that he is hugely relieved. “i feel as though i had my career stripped from me and now someone has said, ‘hang on, you can have it back.’ it is complete relief,” Jock said. “i didn’t know if i would be cleared, despite knowing i had done nothing wrong. i knew it wouldn’t be as easy as turning around and saying ‘i didn’t do it’. i was fortunate that we were able to find the source of the contamination, trace it and prove it, and — most importantly — that i wasn’t responsible nor could have known.”

hives and your horse
It is important for horse owners to recognize the clinical signs of a hives reaction and know when to call the veterinarian.
D
uring my first two months as an intern at Paton and Martin Veterinary Services, the subject of hives, also known as urticaria in medical terms, has come up a number of times. The term hives refers to a clinical sign rather than a specific disease and is the most common skin condition of horses; affecting all breeds, ages and genders. They appear as raised, flat-topped bumps on the skin and can arise on any part of the body. These bumps represent a hypersensitivity, or allergic reaction, to specific allergens in the horse’s environment. As veterinarians, we see a high caseload of hives during the summer because many more allergens (insects, pollen, 18
september 2014
mold, hay, sawdust, etc.) are present in the horses’ environment at this time. Generally, hives are a non life-threatening condition and most horses make a quick uneventful recovery. However, it is important for horse owners to recognize the clinical signs of a hives reaction and know when to call the veterinarian. Etiology and Clinical Signs Hives are a hypersensitivity reaction to antigens that have been ingested (chemicals/ feeds), inhaled (pollen/ dust/ chemicals/ molds), or injected (drugs — Penicillin). Other causes include allergic reactions; whereby the skin or mucus

www.gaitpost.com
membrane comes into direct contact with a specific allergen. Hives can also arise without any antigen stimulation. For example, some horses may break out into hives in extreme hot or cold weather, sunlight, or when sweating during exercise. After being in contact with the allergen, clinical signs can develop immediately and be shortlasting in nature or develop after several hours and last for several days. The classic signs are edematous lesions of the skin and mucus membranes called wheals — flat-topped nodules. These lesions will “pit on pressure” (i.e. after pressing on the area for 10-20 seconds, the imprint of your finger with remain). The wheals usually do not bother the horse, although some horses will become itchy. Hair loss is not a common finding. The size of these wheals can range from 0.2-30 cm and can be single, coalescing, circular, ringshaped, or doughnut shaped. Pathogenesis: How did my horse get hives? The development of hives results from immunoglobulins in our immune system reacting with an antigen (from a bug bite or pollen, for example) and causing a series of cellular reactions. Cells release histamine and stimulate dilation of blood vessels in the skin and increased vascular permeability. This all leads to protein leakage and inflammation, resulting in raised bumps on the horse’s skin. These wheals will appears within a few minutes or hours of exposure to the causative agent. Most of the time the lesions disappear as quickly as they arise — within a few hours. During an outbreak, the horse may also experience fever, anorexia or dullness. In rare cases, a horse may go into anaphylactic shock. A horse in shock will cough excessively, have trouble breathing, and/ or have severe diarrhea. If you notice any of these signs in your horse, contact your veterinarian immediately. Diagnosis A history of sudden onset and the clinical signs mentioned above are usually enough to determine whether or not your horse has hives. www.gaitpost.com
However, hives can be mistaken for other skin lesions. Wheals may look similar to dermatophyte (ringworm) infections. In this instance, confirming the diagnosis with a skin culture or biopsy would be beneficial in determining a treatment plan. Insect bites (Stomoxys and Culicoides) can often have the same inflamed, circular shape as hives. To differentiate between the two, carefully clip the hair over a single lesion. An insect bite will have a hemorrhagic focus in the centre of the wheal, whereas hives will not. There are several other tests that can be used to help determine the cause of a hives outbreak, including: direct skin testing, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Radioallergosorbent Test (RAST), and special hypoallergenic dietary food trials. Consult your veterinarian for more information. Treatment Acute onset of hives can resolve spontaneously without medical intervention within 24-48 hours. By far the best treatment is avoiding and reducing exposure to the allergen as best as possible. Oral corticosteroids such as dexamethasone or prednisolone are a common and effective treatment of hives in horses. Corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatory immunosuppressive drugs that must be used carefully and correctly. Be advised that the withdrawal time for dexamethasone is 24 hours, therefore it is not recommended to treat your horse with this drug during show time. It is important to discuss appropriate treatment with your veterinarian as misusing corticosteroids can lead to further complications in your horse. Schleese is excited to announce the introduction of a revolutionary new saddle fitting tool, The HorseShape Laser, to measure the horse’s back. A German initiative, this laser device takes a complete 3D image of the horse’s back shape within seconds to assist in custom manufacturing or custom fitting the saddle that will be then shipped to the client from head office. The measurements will be calibrated with the Arc Device to ensure the closest possible fit. A client may choose to purchase the scan so they can see the 3D image of their horse’s back for their records, but this service will be complimentary for any new saddle order that requires manufacturing. HorseShape is continuing to work on the technology to compare scans to clearly show clients how their horse has changed over time. The Horse Shape Laser is a wonderful addition to Schleese’s ‘toolbox’ of innovative measuring tools, including its Arc Device and SaddleSizer. This new technology is exciting, as Schleese can now complement its Saddlefit 4 Life saddle fitting techniques with cutting edge technology. The HorseShape Laser is exclusively available in North America from Schleese to any saddle fitter or saddle company, allowing any professional to improve the ultimate saddle fitting experience as well as lifting the standard of education in equine ergonomics & saddle fitting. he pinnacle of goals for young riders (ages 21 and under) is to qualify for and attend the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Kentucky each year. All the disciplines are represented, and showcase the rising talents in both horses and riders. It is a fantastic opportunity for young
riders to experience the true team effort and camaraderie that international riders encounter on a regular basis, and to gain confidence measuring up with the best young riders from all regions in North America. Two Young Riders gave us an account of their firsthand experience in Kentucky 2014. Lindsay Stuart, from the Lower Mainland of BC, competed on Unique and tells us of the group effort involved in getting them there. David Ziegler, who qualified and competed in Eventing and Dressage, tells of the long road to Kentucky, with the monumental task of getting two horses ready and rolling for NAJYRC. FroM LindSAY’S PerSPectiVe For the past several years I followed the BC www.gaitpost.com
riders who went to the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Kentucky. I read their blogs, watched the scores on Fox Village and watched the live stream hoping that one day I would be there representing Canada. In 2013, I was fortunate to go to the Championships as the groom for the BC Team, and that experience convinced me that I really wanted to be there in 2014 as a rider. The journey to North Americans was a full time commitment. Between riding and school there was no time for anything else. I wish I had counted the number of times I said to friends, “I can’t... I have to go to the barn,” but in the end it was all worth it. I would not have traded the experience for anything. It was rewarding in many ways, creating friendships and memories that will last a life time. The competition itself was all encompassing, but I know that the what we will talk about for years to come will have nothing to do with how our rides went, but the crazy things that happened during our two week adventure. It was eye-opening being at a multiple-discipline competition. I had the opportunity to walk the Cross-Country course, which gave me huge respect for those who actually ride it. I decided that jumping over solid objects that are taller than my head is just not for me, I will stick with Dressage. Unique and I were fortunate to arrive at the show grounds a week before the competition started. We got settled in and developed a routine before the stables got busy. It was really interesting to watch the venue being set up, flags, banners, fences, rings, tents, vendors, all got put into place over the course of a week. By the time the actual competition started, I was quite comfortable riding in that environment and I had Unique and my routine down, which eliminated a huge stress factor. As a person who gets nervous fairly easily, I found that I was really quite calm once the competition started. The days were very long, early mornings and late nights, but we were so busy and there was so much going on that the time flew by. The best piece of advice I was given before I

I want to thank my coach, Sandra VerdaZanatta, for teaching me so much and helping me to achieve my goal of competing at NAJYRC, and Emily Dick, Unique’s owner, for her support and generosity in allowing me to ride her fantastic horse and take him to Kentucky. I want to thank my parents and family for being so supportive throughout this whole process, as I could not have done it without them. Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has influenced my riding career over the last 9 years. It is a long road from Introduction to Horse Riding lessons to the North American Junior Young Rider Championships — it takes a village. from david’s perspective Since I was 16, competing in the North American Young Rider Championships (NAYRC) has been a goal of mine. Finally, at 21, my final year of eligibility, I managed to qualify in not one, but 2 disciplines, Eventing and Dressage. 26
september 2014
The journey began while I was Eventing in Alberta and British Columbia in 2007. We imported an exciting new prospect for me from Ireland — Topper (Peninsula Top Man). He and I both moved up the ranks in Eventing together to the Junior (CCI* level) rank, competing locally in the summer and wintering in Florida for a yearround competition calendar. At that time I was 18, (2011) I had aged out of the one star championships. My horse Topper was at the same time, beginning to show us he would not have the bravery to compete successfully at higher levels. In the winter of 2011, having finished high school that summer, I returned to Florida with Topper to become a full time working student with my now coach, Missy Ransehousen. After further assessment, we all agreed Topper would not be my Young Rider horse (CCI** level). However, with his lovely natural talent in the Dressage, we decided to keep him as a Dressage horse for my own education. While working for Missy, I met Critical Decision, (BG), who would later bring me a gold medal. Missy was still campaigning BG at the time with the intent of qualifying him for the 2012 Olympics, a goal that was cut short due to a strained hamstring sustained in March. Missy and I headed north to her farm in Pennsylvania, which she runs with her mom, legendary Dressage trainer Jessica Ransehousen. Topper and I were handed over to Jessica for intensive Dressage training, and it became my responsibility to rehab BG while Missy attended to her duties as US Para Dressage chef d’equipe. One day in August 2011, Missy and I discussed the possibility of me taking over the ride on BG as my Young Rider mount. The then 16 year old gelding still had so much fight in him and love for the game, and I quickly agreed. At the time, BG and I were forging our relationship, and Topper was taking to his new lifestyle as a Dressage horse, bringing home all the top placings at shows and jumping up the levels, always under the watchful eye of Jessica, former US Dressage team chef d’equipe and three-time Olympian. We finished 2011 having a success-

ful season at 3rd level. Then, as the snow started to fall in Pennsylvania, it was time to head back to Florida for BG and I to take advantage of the winter competitions. Skip forward to 2014, and BG and I have finally figured each other out, while Topper has been competing Prix St George since July 2013. In January, Jess and I headed to Wellington, FL to collect Topper’s qualifying scores for the NAYRC while BG stayed in Ocala with Missy. Topper competed three weekends in a row, winning five of his classes. Not too shabby for my Irish Event Horse. Once the last CDI was over, Topper and I booked it up to Ocala to reunite with BG. We trained in Ocala until the third week of March, until we went on to compete at the Carolina International (CIC**), finishing eighth and achieving a qualifying score in Eventing. One down, one to go. We pulled off our next qualifying score at the Jersey Fresh International in May. We had done it, we qualified in two disciplines! The ponies and I left for Kentucky on July 9th, spending a week acclimatizing before competition started. Topper went first. Competing in the Prix St. Georges Team test, and achieving a personal best of 68% in the test, to finish fourth individually. This helped our combined provincial team of AB/BC/ MB finish sixth overall. The next day really had me worried, with BG and Topper competing in the same stadium in rings next to one another. Thankfully, the secretaries were very accommodating, and BG went into his Dressage test, giving another personal best of 46 penalties, to take the lead early on in the Eventing. Topper went in 2 hours later and pulled off a great Individual Test, bringing home the Individual Silver.

concLuSion The focus and dedication required for sport at this level is impressive, but what all young riders need to learn from these riders’ experiences is that it IS achievable, and it does require a lot of support. So next time your mom fetches the hairnet you forgot back in the barn, be sure to thank her in a big way! You can’t do it all alone.

hile in Calgary recently, John Anderson whisked Desi Dillingham and the Gaitpost off to view the new Agrium Western Event Centre in Calgary’s Stampede Park. The Agrium will be the home of the inaugural Royal West horse show in October. Desi was at Anderson Ranch for the recent CDI, as Advisor for Dressage Canada. Desi’s experience is worldwide and she has worked with and at the best facilities in many countries; her efforts have helped bring British Dressage to the top of the international standings. Here is some of what she had to say about Rocky Mountain Show Jumping and John Anderson: “Dressage Canada can thank its lucky stars that someone with the experience and vision of John Anderson has opened his arms to our sport. This was my first visit to Calgary in a very long time and my first encounter with the one and only John Anderson! I was blown away by the panoramic views of the Rockies in the background, and really my first sighting of the ‘big sky’. The venue can hold its own anywhere in the world! Calgary is a ‘horse town’ and enjoys a booming economy. I think this coupled with John’s vision, enthusiasm and charisma the future is very rosy. Show jumping and rodeo are every day words in Calgary, but there are many other disciplines as well that will be delighted by John’s vision of something for everyone.”
AnderSon rAncH – ForwArd tHinking The facility improvements at Anderson Ranch are progressing at a rapid rate, with the new show barns under construction, and many new rings fully in service now. The ground has been broken for the new Derby grass field on the south side of the property, and next year competitors will be able to ride in one of the largest, and certainly the most scenic, grass rings in Canada. The show season for Rocky Mountain Show Jumping is in full-speed-ahead mode right now, with the Rocky Mountain Classics–CSI2* shows wrapping up in August. It will feature a division for international Show Jumpers, national Hunter/ Jumper classes, the CET National Medal Finals, an FEI Dressage Freestyle, and a multitude of other events including Terrier Racing — “evenings full of entertainment built around the horse,” according to Anderson. The Agrium Event Centre is a fabulous brand-new building, state-of-the-art in all ways, and a magnificent arena to show in. The 250' x 125' arena floor is the largest of its kind in Canada. Housing for horses includes 400 box stalls immediately adjacent to the arena, plus an additional 1,200 stalls on site, wash bays, a large outdoor covered area, and a 20,000 sq. ft. multipurpose space for warm up, a trade show or exhibition hall. Kidd, who will be reporting for CNN from the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy (FRA) later this month and at the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping Final in Barcelona (ESP) in October, is herself a talented rider and described her new role as “a dream job”. “This commitment from CNN is a major development and will increase the fan base for our sport enormously by getting equestrian out to massive new audiences”, FEI President HRH Princess Haya said.

unny skies were the order of the day for the $33,000 Maui Jim Grand Prix at Thunderbird Show Park. Forty-three horse rider combinations took the field to challenge the course set by International designer, Alan Wade. With fourteen advancing to the jump-off, only five would leave all the rails up. In the end, it was Langley’s Brian Morton aboard the 17 year-old Selle Français gelding, Spitfire, who rose to the occasion. “He loves his job, especially when he gets to go fast,” explained Morton. “I think in some ways he understands the game. He’s done it a long time and he knows what a jump off is. You just sort of say, ok buddy, here we go.” Karianne Boyce-Lockhart was first into the 38

ring for the jump off, but had an early rail on Ferro DC to finish with four faults. Langley’s Andrea Strain would post the first double clear on Djakarta, setting the pace at 46.49. Tiffany Sullivan from California would come close, but a careful ride to the final fence had her just off the pace at 46.72. In the middle of the order, Morton and Spitfire needed a perfect ride. Local favourites with the hometown crowd, the field quieted as Morton cantered to his first fence. Finding the perfect track and pushing for speed between each jump, the pair were flawless, coming home with a time of 40.81 to take over the lead. “I trust my horse, and I know in this position,

AMericAnS MAke it A FABuLouS FuruSiYYA HAt trick in duBLin tHriLLer August 8, 2014: On a day of extraordinary sport, Team USA made it a spectacular three-in-a-row with victory at the eighth and last leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping 2014 Europe Division 1 series in Dublin, Ireland. It was a roller-coaster ride from start to finish, with drama from the outset and intense pressure all the way through as the threat of relegation was hanging in the air. The British were one of three nations fiercely fighting to fend off a spell in Europe Division 2 next season, and they succeeded in style when filling runner-up spot at the end of the day. But for Ukraine it was deep disappointment as, despite lining up joint-third with France and Sweden, they remain at the bottom of the 10-team leaderboard and drop out of the top league for the near future at least. It was also an un-nerving day for the Irish hosts who failed to make the cut to the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping 2014 Final in Barcelona in October along with Ukraine and Switzerland when finishing joint-sixth alongside The Netherlands. Lying ninth in the final Europe Division 1 standings, the Irish must now wait to see how the second team that qualifies from Europe Division 2 fares at the Barcelona final before they will learn their fate for 2015. But for the Americans, there was never anything to fear as they qualified through their regional series two months ago and have been on a roll ever since. With the Alltech FEI World www.gaitpost.com

he never lets me down,” he explained. “That let me put the pedal to the metal.” While Vinton Karrasch on Coral Reef Follow Me II came close with a clear ride at 42.68, followed by a great round from Lisa Carlsen and World’s Judgement, Morton’s lead held. Riding last in the order was Rich Fellers on his 12 year-old Irish Sport Horse mare, Colgan Cruise. With fast feet throughout, it came down to a rail on the final fence, landing him in sixth place as the fastest of the four-fault rides.

Jayne was rock solid and 21-year-old Katie Dinan continued to amaze with her gifted gelding Nougat du Vallet. Springsteen was also attracting attention throughout the week as her father, rock legend Bruce Springsteen, was on hand to watch his daughter in action. But Jessica showed she’s entitled to attention on her own merits rather than her family connections. She was on fire when winning yesterday’s Winning Round at the Dublin fixture and cruised through two fabulous
rounds to help clinch another historic victory for her country. “I’ve never been on a team before at this level and I was nervous today, but my horse is incredible and we have a great partnership — he’s so brave and confident. I couldn’t ask for more from any horse, and he’s not as strong as he looks!” she said with delight. gerMAnY toPS FuruSiYYA euroPe diViSion 2 QuALiFier in BrAtiSLAVA August 9, 2014: While their Europe Division 1 counterparts were enduring a bruising encounter in Dublin (IRL), Team Germany’s Europe Division 2 team galloped to victory at the seventh and penultimate leg of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup Jumping 2014 series in Bratislava (SVK). for fourth place by just a single fault when posting 20 in total, and Austria lined up seventh with 24 ahead of Czech Republic in eighth place on a total of 29 faults. The Germans established the lead in the first round and then held off a strong challenge from the Swiss and Canadians to post their win. First-round clears from Germany’s Joerg Oppermann (Che Guevara), Thomas Kleis (For Success) and Lawrence Greene (Arrivederci 7) meant that Heiko Schmidt (Chap 47) didn’t have to go into the ring, but when Canada’s Jordan Macpherson (Piccobello du Val de Geer), Jaclyn Duff (Pater Noster) and Elizabeth Gingras (Zilversprings) did the same, Jill Henselwood still chose to jump her horse (Quidam Blue). Posting 19 faults, her score didn’t count, but the Canadians were still on level-pegging with the Germans at the halfway stage, both on zero, while Switzerland, the USA and Slovakia were next in line when all carrying just four faults into round two. The Austrians with eight, and Brazil and Czech Republic with 12 and 13 respectively also made it through. The Germans began to get the upper hand when Oppermann returned another clear in round two while Canada’s Macpherson picked up four faults, and when Duff collected eight second time out for Canada, and Kleis only left one on the floor for Germany, then the writing already seemed to be on the wall. Gingras steadied the Canadian decline with her lovely double-clear, but Henselwood added another seven faults to her scoreline so Team Canada racked up a total of 11 at the end of the day. ricHArd SPooner tAkeS tHe $33,000 cSi*** SteLLA ArtoiS oPen weLcoMe August 14, 2014: The Summer Classic kicked off recently at Thunderbird Show Park. USA champions Rich Fellers and Richard Spooner topped the order, with Spooner taking the win. “I knew I had to leave one stride out in the first line and one stride out in the second line and after that, I could cool my jets and kind of cruise home,” Spooner explained “It’s a big advantage to get to watch the guy in front of you.” The pair would hold on to the top spot through the final rounds, taking the win with a time of 34.05. “You’re much better off to follow Rich than be followed by Rich, so it worked out in my favour,” noted Spooner. “I think if the tables had been turned you would have seen an opposite result.” Vinton kArrAScH LeAdS tHe wAY witH $100,000 cSi***-w FAcet AdViSorS worLd cuP August 18, 2014: Fans gathered at Thunderbird Show Park for Sunday’s $100,000 CSI***-W Facet Advisors World Cup Qualifier were treated Discipline Reports continued on page 42

In a field of thirty competitors, seven would advance to the jump off, with California’s Vinton Karrasch putting in the winning round aboard his new mount, Coral Reef Follow Me II. Vinton Karrasch and Coral Reef Follow Me II were next. A new partnership, Karrasch and the 9 year-old Westphalian stallion placed second in the $33,000 Maui Jim Grand Prix. Sailing over the first few fences, Follow Me got a good rub on the International Gems fence, drawing a gasp from the crowd, but the rail stayed up and Karrasch galloped across the final fence to big cheers and a time of 45.62. A forward gallop throughout from Susan Hutchison on Ziedento was just off the pace at 47.01. “You’ve got to be happy with a double clear,” she said. Brenda Riddell and Dutch Amouretta delivered a solid round, clear with a time of 51.71 to land in third overall after Tiffany Sullivan and Tristan posted eight faults. “This level is new for my horse and I, so I was

Riders from the Island to Alberta all met each other to enjoy the hospitality and hard work of Sonya and King of Topline Stables as well as all the workers and volunteers. The weather gods were in our favour as well, who could ask for more? With many campers on the grounds it made for a very enjoyable weekend away. The use of the terrain at Topline Stables is phenomenal as they make great use of the hills, steep banks and good footing in open fields and gallop stretches towards the pond with such a variety of well designed and exciting jumps it makes Cross-Country such a blast. Besides the Eventing on the August long weekend, Topline Stables offered a 2 phase the day before the event from Starter to Preliminary level, which was very welcoming for the riders to join in on and make great use of the long weekend.

Pinto Worlds
BC GOES TO THE he last 10 years have been filled with changes for Marianne Warland. That is how long it has been since she has been back to the Pinto Worlds! After a car accident in 2008 and having to sell her beloved TT Harvest Moon (Harvey, 2004 two time Reserve Pinto World Champion), a death in the family, and selling of the family farm due to expansions in South Delta, Marianne is back with enthusiasm. Marianne purchased Fancy Cutie (Clint) in December of 2013 from Paint horse breeders Sandy and Darrell Winterowd, owners of Paint Creek Stables in Ely, Iowa. TJ Wells is their farm manager/trainer, and has been working with Clint from the beginning. After several conversations over the phone with TJ, the talk turned to him coming to Vancouver to teach a Western Pleasure Clinic. It was TJ’s first round as a Clinician, but what a success. This was to be the last event at the Warland’s old farm. TJ was a breath of fresh air! With new ideas and techniques, this solidified Marianne’s belief in him. She asked TJ if the Pinto Worlds would be possible and if he would be interested in showing Fancy Cutie in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There was a lot of stress and waiting, but at the last minute it came to reality. Marianne went down to Tulsa to help TJ with Fancy Cutie. This was also to be TJ’s first ride at The Worlds. Marianne said, “I have to admit I had goose bumps watching TJ and Fancy Cutie jog into the arena for the first time.” The pair rode to top ten cuts into the finals for all their classes and received two top ten and one top eight individual placings out of upwards of 44 horses entered. Not bad for first timers.
“It was a pleasure to get the opportunity to take Fancy Cutie to the World Show. Thanks to Marianne for having me ride him and the Winterowds for raising such a nice horse,” said TJ. Who knows what the future brings, but we know plans are already being made for 2015 Worlds. There have been requests for another Western Pleasure Clinic with TJ. Watch for dates and venue to be announced later this year. AnotHer SucceSS StorY It has been a long six weeks for local Langley rider Kirsten Chamberland and her five year old Paint gelding Sure Enough Sensational. It has been an even longer six months. Pinto Worlds continued from page 57 all around mare, A Sexy Sensation last November, “One Event Manny” had to step up and learn some new events, and rather quickly. Riding with Moore Performance Horses since she was four, Kirsten’s 14-18 career was on the home stretch, so Chris and Jodie Moore made the difficult decision to send the pair south to jump with Rod Safte and Roger Deromedi. Despite having only 3 months under their belt, this pair validated that decision by accumulating an impressive array of titles along the way:
Pinto World Champion Novice Youth Hunter Hack, 3rd overall Pinto 14-18 Ideal English, and top tens in 14-18 English Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Discipline Rail, Bareback Equitation, Working Hunter, Novice Working Hunter, Hunter Hack, and Hunt Seat Equitation Over Fences. Roger rode Manny to World Champion Open Hunter Hack, and Reserve World Champion Open Working Hunter, as well as third in the Green. The following week led them to the Paint Youth World Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, where they ended up Reserve World Champions in 14-18 Working Hunter and Novice Working Hunter, as well as top tens in Ideal Paint, Discipline Rail, Novice Hunter Hack, Hunter Hack, and Hunt Seat Equitation Over Fences. They also made the Finals of Hunter Under Saddle. Kirsten earned a spot on the Kansas State Equestrian Team this coming September, and we look forward to hearing of her successes in collegiate competitions.

HTBC ADULT RIDER CAMP
O
n July.7-9th, the 2nd annual HTBC Adult Rider Camp was held at the Dot Ranch in Merritt, BC, and hosted by Lynne and Jens Larsen. There were 43 participants at all levels, from all over BC. We had amazing coaches: Jane Stone from Cobble Hill, and Stephanie Goodman from Boise, Idaho. We also had a few exciting additions for camp this year. Participants were thrilled to listen to Roger Friesen, Sport Psychologist for a lecture on “Mental toughness and focus”, and many took advantage of booking a private session with him during the camp. Another super addition was an interactive talk and demonstration by Blaire Owen: Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, on “Incorporating additional fitness into our
busy equestrian lives.” There was also the chance to brush up on ground work, and many people learned how to introduce natural obstacles such as ditches, banks, and water to their horses from the ground. We also had the chance, of course, to enjoy fabulous food and socialize at the evening potlucks. On behalf of the BC Adult Rider Program, thank you so much for coming and we can’t wait to see you all next year. — Submitted by Brandy Saunders
