MARCH 21ST 2015
TOMPKINS THEATRE, HEREFORD
0EVENING MENU0 and
PROGRAMME
2BONJOUR1 WELCOME TO OUR y fantastically FRENCH affair!
The aim of this evening is to raise £3000 to help with our joint project with the Rotary club of Franschhoek to purchase a car for the hospice. 12 members of our club will visit South Africa in April to present the car to the hospice.
The Franschhoek Hospice cares for 265 patients in the community by providing nursing and palliative care usually through home visits. Many of these patients are among the poorest in the community, many from seriously deprived/disadvantaged townships. This work requires requires Hospice to own, maintain and operate a small fleet of cars and emergency response vehicles: hence transportation is a major item. Hospices do not receive any Government funding in SA and have to rely entirely on charitable public donations and occasional lottery funding. Below is an extract from an email from Hospice CEO Colleen Douglas: This year we were fortunate enough to employ a Community Care Worker with a drivers licence. The object of this was to be able to reach the outlying farms and also extend our Health Promotion and Prevention services such as TB screening, sputum collection, Woman’s Health which includes, Cervical screening, Family Planning and Men’s Health especially MMC. Part of the health promotion and family planning is condom distribution, male and female and you would be astounded by the numbers that we distribute. We are the only Palliative Home-Based Health Care Service provider in the community providing these services and much more. All of this is FREE. We do it with love and dedication, not only the Caring side of Hospice but also the Enabling side. We are a staff of 16, all females and I am extremely aware of all of our safety and especially when the Sisters are on night calls. We service our cars on a regular basis. Each car has a book where the daily travelling is recorded, petrol, and this is then checked along with tyres etc at the end of the month and reported at the monthly MANCO meetings which is held on the first Monday of the month. As you can see from above this is an extremely worthwhile cause and already builds on our project in the HIV Hospice in Cape Town to provide sun shelter for the classrooms and wash rooms which we will also be visiting whilst we are over in SA.
