ON THE WALLS ... INTI Chilean Artist INTI was in Lisbon last July of 2016, invited by the platform Underdogs, to undertake an artistic intervention by the Olaias roundabout with the backing of GAU. The author uses the themes and palettes we have become accustomed to, and is the latest in a series of 3 works entitled “La Madre Secular” (The Secular Mother), which integrates a group of walls painted in Marseille, Paris and finally Lisbon. In the words of INTI: “These three pieces are a layman’s representation of the Madonna, where the sacred image of woman remains outside of the religious context.” Underdogs is the cultural platform of Alexandre Farto aka Vhils and Pauline Foessel, located in Lisbon, which seeks to promote artists connected to the new languages of graphic and visual culture of an urban inspiration. Created in 2010 and consolidated in its current form since 2013, the project is founded on three complementary areas: an art gallery, a public art program and the production and edition of artists. ©BC

LÓIOS Commissioned by Marvila’s local council, and with the support of GAU , the artist Hibashira brought colour and movement to the walls of the Lóios Sports Pavillion in Marvila. In the artist’s own words, there would be nothing better than to represent the sports that are practiced within it, drawing faceless athletes, so that everyone may imagine themselves in those stances, amid a sporting action.

CALÇADA DE SANTO ANDRÉ To mark the International Condom’s Day, the national artist Hibashira undertook an artistic intervention on the facade of municipal buildings numbers 81 and 83 of Calçada de Santo André, where GAT functions - Permanent Attendance Office. The opening took place on the 13th of February of 2016, along with an action to raise awareness, with a view to promoting the use of condoms as a means for the prevention of infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. The initiative is the result of a partnership between GAT and AHF - Aids Healthcare Foundation and also had the backing of the Urban Art Gallery, the Department for Cultural Heritage, the Department for Social Rights, the Municipal Direction for Housing and of several services of the Lisbon Town Hall. ©BC

RAM

The international collaborations of Portuguese writer RAM were a constant in his works for the year 2016, which is marked by the start of the project “Ram Lx Portals” which had the backing of the Urban Art Gallery. A set of portals created by 4 or, at times, even 8 hands, began appearing in the city, linking together countries and continents. In July it had the participation of Mario Martinez, Mars-1, an artist based in San Francisco (U.S.A.), who created a work located on Inácio Pardelhas Sanchez Street in the Liberdade Neighbourhood. In September, two Italian artists participated, ETNIK and Corn79, with an urban art intervention on a wall located on Dom Luís de Noronha Street number 41, next to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Our thanks goes out to the artists involved for offering these urban art works to the city.

ON THE WALLS ... FESTIVAL TODOS 2016

In its 8th Edition, the Todos Festival - A Walk Across Cultures returned to Santana Hill and to Mártires da Pátria Field, between the 8th and 11th of September. A project by Lisbon Town Hall in partnership with the Cultural Producers Academy, with the backing of the Local Council of Arroios, the Local Council of Santo António and multiple other institutions, TODOS promotes the meeting and dialogue between cultures through contemporary art, including urban art. With the backing of the Urban Art Gallery and at the hands of street artist Tamara Alves, a mural was conceived which the artist entitled “Es-

cape Into Life” and which she describes as: “a bodily call that dives into a mysterious reality that is imbued with wonders. “Starving hysterical naked”(Allen Ginsberg). The story that runs through the veins of the Lisbon neighbourhoods and the blood that flows through our bodies works as a time passage device and as a communicator of instincts. Nowadays we are multi-cultural, mad, of mixed beauty, grotesque, we speak 5 languages, we are of all religions and yet of none. We have the desire to see ourselves in one another, to live with one another, and how we do it ALL (TODOS) together.”

SKRAN During the month of July, Portuguese artist SKRAN made an artistic intervention on the outer walls of the changing area of the games field at Estados Unidos da América Avenue.

A project by the Local Council of Alvalade that had the support of the Urban Art Gallery of the Department for Cultural Heritage, that means to bring new life to the location and the city.

WALL OF DONA ESTEFÂNIA HOSPITAL

In a project by the Local Council of Arroios in partnership with the D. Estefânia Paediatric Hospital which also had the backing of GAU, national artists Miguel Brum and Nuno Barbedo aka The Caver, undertook an artistic intervention in June of 2016, on the containment wall of

the D. Estefânia Paediatric Hospital on José Estêvão Street, allusive and dedicated to the beneficiaries of that institution: young children and adolescents.

NOMEN In October of 2016, Lisbon Town Hall opened a new urban art mural, by the artist Nomen, in homage to Professor Moniz Pereira.

We leave here our invitation to all those interested to come and visit this new work of urban art and also, why not, to practice a sporting activity on the Moniz Pereira Track.

ON THE WALLS ... EDIS ONE – 2 WORKS In 2016, Lisbon artist Edis One initiated a new project, entitled “Edis One & Cork & Tile X They Exist Refugees”, executed with typically Portuguese materials - tiles and cork. As well as the works he has developed in his atelier, he also created two works within the city’s urban art space, located on the wall at the top of Forças Armadas Avenue and on a vacant building in the Padre Cruz neighbourhood, at Rio Caia Street.

(MORE) URBAN ART AT José Gomes Ferreira Park On the initiative of the Local Council of Alvalade, national creator Hugo Lucas returns to José Gomes Ferreira Park, with new urban art interventions, this time at the entrance of this municipal park. We invite all those interested to a visit through nature and art. In 2014 Hugo Lucas was the winning artist of the competition set forth by the Municipal Direction of Urban Environments in partnership with GAU, for artistic interventions in the 4 pre-fabricated structures that constitute the Centre for Welcome and Visitor Support of the then recently inaugurated Adventure Park - a green recreation area whose principal use is the practice of adventure and sports activities. Under the theme of “The Woodland of Alvalade reinvented in 4 acts”, the artist resorted to an imaginary inspired in the natural kingdom and in the vast array of botanical elements that characterize herbaceous, arbustive and arboreal species, with the goal of promoting the visual integration of these structures into the Park’s surroundings.

In October of 2016, the Quinta Marquês de Abrantes neighbourhood in Marvila received an artistic intervention authored by the LICUADO collective, a team of artists from Uruguay, located in Marvila, at Alberto José Pessoa Street. This was an initiative to with a view to raise peoples’

awareness of urban art, within the local community of this neighbourhood, which will welcome the next edition of MURO Lx_2017 – Lisbon Urban Art Festival.

URBAN ART AT Chelas Valley Urban /Horticultural Park On the initiative of the Municipal Direction for Green Structures, Environment and Energy of the Town Hall of Lisbon and with the backing of GAU, the artist MOAMI made an urban art intervention at 2 recently opened facilities - Bar/Café and Washrooms - at the Chelas Valley Urban /Horticultural Park , located between Santo Condestável Avenue and Avelino Teixeira da Mota Av., in Marvila. Here we share images of the currently finished works of urban art and we welcome all those interested to visit them as well as the Park, which is 16 hectares in size, contains also a great horticultural area, a Children’s Park and a Skate Park. ©HC

ON THE WALLS ... VHILS IN MADRID Alexandre Farto aka Vhils made one more of his memorable works, this time around on the facade of Carlos III of Madrid University, in the Spanish capital. Executed in the month of November, within the 14th Edition of the Exhibition Culture Portugal, organized by the Portuguese Embassy of Madrid, this artistic intervention illustrates the face of Portuguese Nobel Literature Prize Winner, an homage to, José Saramago.

VHILS IN LISBOA This is the first intervention on a building that is non-destructive, created on the facade of GS1 - a company located in Lumiar, which presents a reflection on the chaos of contemporary life and the valuing of what it is important to retain amidst this process - identity and human life.

The work is composed of 49 panels in high-relief which reveal an image inspired in QR Codes - part of the line of work of this company - in the faces and the “ almost archaeological” exploration of the wall, that is characteristic of Vhils’ works.

RESTLESSNESS DAYS

It was with great satisfaction that GAU associated itself once more to EGEAC in the 3rd Edition of “Restlessness Days”, promoted by Fernando Pessoa House and the José Saramago Foundation, between the 16th and 30th of November of 2016. The urban art component of this initiative was under the direction of illustrator Andre da Loba who made an artistic intervention at São Bento Street, number 640. The national creator developed a work dedicated to the memory of the city and of

the two great figures of literature, Fernando Pessoa and José Saramago. In the artist’s words: “Restlessness, is, in Pessoa, the dislocation of Self, the frenzy of the mind. In Saramago it is rather the dislocation of They, the moral and political provocation. On this wall an emotional storm is represented, wherein both agents can be one same person, in the mirror, or the Other, in interaction. It is about to rain...” .

The Departmento, an amplifying and dynamizing platform for free-to-access culture, organized from the 16th to the 19th of June in Xabregas the first edition of “POSTER”, which had the backing of GAU.

Since September of last year the artistic intervention of Mamba-de-Jameson takes up the walls of Pensão Amor. Authored by Atelier Contencioso, this work means to create a dynamic presence on the exterior of this emblematic building at Cor de Rosa Street, enveloping it in organic forms that are based on the natural ‘coats’ of several animals, from birds to scaly serpents that so strongly are related to the forbidden fruit.

POSTER is a public exhibition of art and words which has the street as its native environment. Words, photography, drawing, illustration and mixed media, take on the poster format as their base. A public gallery out in the open that integrated the collage and exhibition of posters, conceived by artists, designers, photographers, writers and architects that were both Portuguese and International, then printed and glued to the walls of one of the new creative areas of Lisbon.

SWEET N’ EIGHT – NE WORK IN BENFICA

Here we show the new artistic interventions of ParizOne and several guest artists (Edis One, Morta, among others), created throughout the year of 2016 on the dividing wall shared with GAU, located on Calhariz de Benfica Road.

Organized in partnership with the Local Council of Carnide, EGEAC and GEBALIS, the MURO | Urban Art Festival Lx_2016 involved a vast array of activities with an epicentre at Padre Cruz neighbourhood, in Carnide. As well as artistic intervention, the great event of urban art of 2016 integrated: Photography Exhibitions by GAU and Agência Calipo; A Films Show organized with the Municipal Video-Library; International Conference with representatives from Festivals and Programmes dedicated to urban art, namely, the Mural Arts Program of Philadelphia (USA), the Nuart of Stavanger (Norway), the Asalto in Saragoça (Spain), the Upfest of Bristol (United Kingdom) and the Inward held in Naples (Italy). Thought to be “of” and “for” everyone, MURO promoted, on the streets of Padre Cruz neighbourhood, over 60 works created by national and international authors, invited by Ana Vilar Bravo, Lara Seixo Rodrigues, Miguel Negretti, Pariz One, Pedro Soares Neves, Vhils|Pauline Foessel, the group of curators of the Festival, as well as the Urban Art Gallery. To this list can be added during the Festival several other artists that of their own initiative wished to be associated with the event, which translated into a movement of spontaneous participation, that greatly enriched the Festival.

Of note is the project “Incursions by Urban Art”, organized in collaboration with the Department of Education of Lisbon Town Hall in the schools of Carnide, the promotion of workshops for children and senior citizens, such as “Lata 65”, created by Lara Seixo Rodrigues and also, guided tours around the neighbourhood. MURO also included a set of shows presented by local institutions and associations, in the scope of community intervention, such as street theatre sessions, performance, marionettes, reading and capoeira. The Festival also ventured “Outside the Neighbourhood” and occurred in other areas through the exhibition “Muros da Glória”, at Lisbon Airport with a set of works executed in its interior and also exterior scaffoldings, in Entrecampos on the wall of Adriano Correia de Oliveira Street, and generally all over town, through a new phase of the project “Recycle the View”, with artistic interventions spread out through all the city of Lisbon.

BIP ZIP PROJECT “CREATING CHANGE THROUGH URBAN ART | Boutique da Cultura and Crescer a Cores Associations In June of 2015 Boutique da Cultura envisioned an intervention project within the scope of urban art. It dared Crescer a Cores to join this project and both Associations ran for the program BIP-ZIP by Lisbon’s Town Hall. The project received a very high number of votes and was approved, having begun its activities on the October 15th of 2015. From the 24th of June to the 31st of July of 2016, about 30 interventions, that took place in the public spaces in Padre Cruz neighbourhood, resulted from this project. Each of these interventions was always preceded by a strong involvement of the residents, in a very interesting interaction with the guest artists. Following the Awareness Initiative “Pairs Formation in Urban Art - Local partners in Padre Cruz Neighbourhood” promoted by GAU, Boutique da Cultura has made available since January of 2017 a regular guided tours service (in Portuguese and English) around the nucleus of street art works that can be seen in the neighbourhood. MORE ON THE WALLS… KOCTEL

25 YEARS OF APAV Within the scope of the celebrations of its 25 years of existence, APAV promoted the creation of an urban art mural entitled “Introspection” with the backing of the Urban Art Gallery. This mural is authored by artists Frederico Draw and Rodrigo Alma, of RUA Collective, who collaborated voluntarily. The mural “Introspection” was created not only to mark the 25 years of APAV, but also to express the mission to associate with the community which it is a part of. This work may be seen at Dona Estefânia Street (at the crossing with Travessa da Escola Araújo), near to the headquarters of APAV.

A cocktail of colours may now be savoured with the eyes on the walls near the children’s park of Maria de Lurdes Pintassilgo Garden, in Lisbon. The work is by street artist Koctel, and the analogy is the artist’s own, while he talks to us about his aesthetic universe, the inspiration for his work, the shape and paths he has taken in his career as an urban artist. Despite its geographical proximity, Portugal is not a frequent destination in this artist’s travels, who on his trip to Lisbon wanted to mark it as a first with one of his vibrant pieces. That wish became a reality through the Arroios Local Council and also PSI Restaurant, which made its creation viable, the backing of the Urban Art Gallery. We welcome both children and adults to come and enjoy the work. ©JV

CENTRE FOR INNOVATION OF MOURARIA The installations wall of the Centro for Innovation of Mouraria / Mouraria Creative Hub, opened in May of last year as an Incubator geared towards the Cultural and Creative Industries, currently exhibits an eclectic nucleus of artistic interventions.

With there being a group of pre-existing images by the author Camilla Watson, a challenge was proposed to APAURB – Portuguese Association of Urban Art who, with the aid of local writers, integrated two multi-coloured bands with a Greek-inspired geometric pattern, created from patches made up of tags. Following suit, CIM in partnership with GAU made a Call For Artists for the creation of another work, of greater scope and that would evoke themes associated with that neighbourhood. Godmess was the artist the jury chose, and his work builds an almost cubist synthesis, with a vibrant palette and touching on many planes, portraying architecture, tiling, population and the experiences that are particular of life in Mouraria. This will be a space for the support of business start-ups in the fields of design, media, fashion, music, jewellery, tiling, among others, integrated within the network of Incubators of Lisbon.

P28 – BELÉM PANEL BILLBOARD is a project of public contemporary art, created and developed by P28 in partnership with the Sonnabend Collection and Travessa da Ermida, the aim of which is to manipulate advertising displays so they may become the recipients of manifestations of contemporary art. This concept arose from the need to rehabilitate and revive these displays that in their genesis were conceived for several purposes - advertising and political propaganda - reorienting / subverting their original intention through making use of their great potential as a vessel for communication for the masses. Here we highlight the latest intervention on display, located on India Avenue, authored by the British creator Jason Martin (1970) who lives and works between London and Portugal. ©JV

ENTERTAINMENT AND PEDAGOGY TOURS Guided tours of the urban art of Lisbon have definitely conquered the public’s interest. We are very pleased to receive requests for tours from journalists, authors, tourism, entertainment and pedagogy professionals both national and international, as well as from primary and secondary schools, universities, recreational and leisure associations, cultural and social associations, to summarize, from a diversity of entities and audiences. To provide information and help the public know about urban art in the city was, in 2016, one of the greater goals of the Urban Art Gallery and we hope it will continue to be so for many, many years to come.

BOTTLE BANKS With the goal of encouraging art among their “younger” students, the São Cristóvão School contacted GAU to give their young ones the opportunity of painting on two bottle banks. In this edition we share images of the bottle banks, painted by the children of São Cristóvão School, on a lively day, dedicated to urban art and creativity.

WORKSHOPS APRIL’S 25TH | At the invitation of the Prime Minister’s Office, GAU participated in the celebrations of the 25th of April, by organising an urban art workshop that took place at the Official Residence of the Prime Minister, with the support of street artist Catarina Monteiro aka Glam. IDADE FESTIVAL | The Urban Art Gallery was present at the Lisbon Idade Festival that took place between the 1st and 3rd of October at the Estrela Garden. In a partnership with GLUM l Urban Musical Cleaning Group, an urban art workshop was held with the guiding hand of the artist Filipe Gusmão, where several refuse bins were painted that were later used in the musical presentations. The GLUM Project presupposes the creation of different groups of Urban Musical Cleaning in the different neighbourhoods of the city. On stage, work utensils are transformed into musical instruments and the most unlikely artists were revealed. An initiative that not only promotes environmental education, but also social cohesion. STUDY IN LISBON - ERASMUS | GAU was, once again and with great enthusiasm, the partner of “Study in Lisbon”, for international students week which occurred between the 10th and the 14th of October, through the organisation of two activities: a guided tour and an urban art workshop. The urban art guided tour covered the most recent set of works in the Padre Cruz neighbourhood, executed within the scope of MURO Lx_2016 - Urban Art Festival of Lisbon. In the workshop it was “all hands on deck” or, in this case, on spray cans, experimenting with the aerosol technique with the guidance of the artist Ozearv, in an urban art workshop held at the free painting panels at Largo da Oliveirinha. The International Students in Lisbon were officially welcomed by the city and by its Mayor, Fernando Medina.

LATA’65 | During 2016, we held many Lata’65 workshops in partnership with Local Councils of Lisbon. An initiative aimed at a Senior audience, conceived by Lara Seixo Rodrigues, financed by the Participative Budget of Lisbon (2013/14), which seeks to bring awareness to this age group of the growing importance of this form of artistic expressions. Following an afternoon of work done in a room, which also had the support of the artist Adres, as well as an historical framing, the stencil technique was taught, a form of street intervention that is simple to learn. Each participant was encouraged to create their own TAG (signature) so that they may later be part of the creation of a mural.

The Action for Raising Awareness in Urban Art was held in the Padre Cruz neighbourhood: “Training of Partners - Local Partners” in November of 2016, encompassing theoretical and practical sessions and guided tours, in a total duration of 13h30m. The initiative by GAU and the Department for Development and Training of Lisbon Town Hall, also had the partnership of the Local Council of Carnide’s Assembly, the Resident’s Association of the Padre Cruz neighbourhood, the Local Council of Carnide, of project BIP ZIP “Criar Mudança através da Arte Urbana (Creating Change Through Urban Art)” of the Boutique da Cultura Association and the Crescer A Cores - Associação de Solidariedade Social. At the end of the Action,

participants were trained to take visitors on a guided tour of the urban art works located in the Padre Cruz neighbourhood, held within the context of “MURO Lx_2016” - Urban Art Festival” and of project BIP ZIP “Criar Mudança através da Arte Urbana”. Following on from this Action, from January 2017, the Boutique da Cultura Association began a program of regular tours of the group of works in the Padre Cruz neighbourhood, at an affordable cost which allows the project to be sustainable. The public’s interest has been significant, as all guided tours to date have been completely sold out.

MEGAFONE LAUNCHES Launch of the first edition of “CONVOCARTE”, a Digital Magazine for the Sciences of the Arts of the Faculty of Fine Art of the University of Lisbon, on 15/01/2016, dedicated to the topic of public art which contained the article “Some Determining Factors for the Impact of Urban Art in Lisbon” conceived by author Silvia Câmara of GAU. CONFERENCES, COURSES AND SYMPOSIUMS Participation in the Conferences “Participative Processes in Art and Science - Participative Urban Art. Various Visions”, held at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, on the 25th of February. Participation in the Summer Course of the Complutense University of Madrid, entitled “Comisariados alternativos. Nuevas narrativas en museos (Alternative Commissions. New narratives in museums)”, at the invitation of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, held on the 4th and 5th of July, where GAU presented the municipal strategy of Lisbon for graffiti and street art. Participation in the Symposium “As Cores de Lisboa (The Colours of Lisbon)”, held on the 17th and 18th of November at the Archive Room of the Paços do Concelho, organised by the group Amigos de Lisboa (Friends of Lisbon) - an institution of reference in the defence, investigation and valuation of the heritage of our city. Through the communication “Graffiti e street art: as novas cores da cidade (Graffiti and street art: the new colours of the city) GAU shared the municipal strategy for urban art, and projected images of some of the most emblematic urban art works.

JURIES Backing and participation of GAU in the Jury for the Graffiti Exhibition of Almada of 2016, organised by the Almada Town Hall, with live paintings that were made on the 10th and 11th of September at Tenente Valadim Street (Cova da Piedade – Romeira). Backing of the organisation of and participation in the Jury of the Urban Art Competition of the Montijo Town Hall, held in June. Montijo Town Hall wished to give greater dynamic to the historical centre of the town and to reinforce the connection between art and plastic expressions through creative projects to be implemented in public spaces, awakening the community’s interest in contemporary art culture, while simultaneously fighting the indiscriminate and disorderly use of graffiti in the town.

PUBLICATIONS STREET ART LISBON, VOL 2 Backing the edition of the book “Street Art Lisbon, vol 2”, in partnership with Zest Editors, which brings together works by National and International artists that coloured the city of Lisbon from 2014 to 2016, in a format akin to the 1st volume, (with GPS coordinates for the works and a map of works in the city included), this is an album that is fully illustrated that pays homage to those that continue to make Lisbon a world class urban art centre. The launch event took place at the MUWorkspace space, with live painting, artists present and musical entertainment.

Backing of the publication of the book “Da Rua para o Mundo: Etnografia Urbana Comparada do Graffiti e do Parkour (From The Street To The World: A Comparative Urban Ethnography of Graffiti and Parkour)”, by Lígia Ferro, auxiliary guest professor of the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto. This is an edition by the Social Sciences Press of the Institute of Social Sciences.

Backing of the book “Street Art Portugal”, in partnership with Zest Editors. It contemplates a group of works made throughout the country in the last years by artists of several nationalities that work within the universe of urban art.

EDITORIAL

CONTINUES ...

2016 was the year when the first great event that brought together the several different dimensions of the municipal urban strategy took place. Due to this, in this edition our attention is naturally focused on “MURO - Urban Art Festival Lx_2016”, which took place between the 30th of April and the 15th of May, and which also closed an eight year cycle of work developed by the Urban Art Gallery, the project of the Department for Cultural Heritage of CML dedicated to the graffiti and street art of Lisbon. We believe there could be no better way to mark that date than to publish the 8th Volume of the GAU Magazine.

The MURO | Festival of Urban Art will continue its path, in another Council of the city. This time around, the chosen territory is Marvila, and it will take place from the 25th to the 28th of May. It is a part of the Iberian-American Cultural Capital event, which is celebrated in Lisbon in 2017 and which will provide the meeting and sharing of experiences of urban art artists that come from some countries that are a part of the Iberian-American Community. In the field of artistic production we foresee the making of a group of 15 large-scale works, on the walls of buildings located in the Quinta dos Alfinetes and the Quinta Marquês de Abrantes neighbourhoods, among other interventions.

After the Festival was held and after the pilot-projects that we have come to develop in the last years in the Municipal Neighbourhoods, we can confirm that the coming together and connection between Art and the Community is a fruitful path for urban art in Lisbon, through which the peripheries can become new centres for action, contributing to a reviving of life in public spaces, and to the creation of new lines of identity and bonds of belonging for the residents of the city.

The programme for the Festival also encompasses guided tours and workshops in urban art, concerts and shows, talks and debates, photography exhibitions and other street entertainment activities, in 4 festive and celebratory days between the urban art community and the population of Marvila and of the city, and its visitors. Now you know, between the 25th and 28th of May, you are all invited to visit MURO | Urban Art Festival LX_2017. The meeting point is at the Municipal Library of Marvila. We hope to see you there!

The strategy that GAU has come to value in the past years considers that urban art , beyond its artistic value, is a tool for the democratization of access to culture, of social and creative inclusion, and of encouragement of intergenerational dialogue. Lisbon is currently considered one of the most relevant cities globally within the realm of production in the fields of graffiti and street art, but it was not only “MURO” that consolidated that position of relevance. Many other initiatives, in the various fields of work of the Urban Art Gallery occurred throughout 2016, namely artistic intervention by national and international artists, entertainment and pedagogy activities, projects that back investigation and reflection, backing of editions, participation in the debate on urban art, encouraging awareness, inventorying works of street art in the city, and furthering international relations and the sharing of experiences and best practices in this domain with other countries.
