Monika Buch
(Valencia, 1936; actualmente vive en Utrecht), fue la primera y única española que estudió en la HfG de Ulm (Escuela Superior de Gestaltung o Escuela de Ulm), institución concebida como la heredera de la revolucionaria Bauhaus. Monika Buch, de padres alemanes, pasó su infancia entre Alemania y España, donde su familia se desplazó para evitar la Guerra Civil y la Segunda Guerra Mundial, respectivamente. En 1956, después de finalizar sus estudios en el Colegio Alemán de Barcelona, su madre le presentó un recorte de prensa con un artículo de “Die Zeit” sobre la inauguración del nuevo edificio de Max Bill para la Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG), hecho que le impulsó a viajar a la ciudad alemana de Ulm y cursar estudios en dicha escuela entre 1956 a 1958. Tras su etapa en Ulm, se trasladó a Utrecht donde cursó los estudios universitarios de pedagogía y psicología infantil. Durante dos años centró su actividad en el campo del diseño de juguetes en la fábrica holandesa ADO, pero desde 1972 se dedicó en exclusiva a su trabajo artístico, con investigaciones centradas en la interrelación forma-color. La muestra que ahora Galería Rafael Ortiz dedica a Monika Buch consta de una selección de piezas sobre papel y sobre tabla, realizadas por la artista valenciana justo en ese periodo, entre los años 1973 y 1979. Su obra se fundamenta en lo que aprendió en la HfG. En palabras de la propia artista: “Siempre parto de una idea o una cuestión que quiero resolver. Me interesa la percepción: qué es lo que veo y por qué, por eso me gusta trabajar en un tema con variaciones. La estética es importante pero muchas veces más en un segundo plano. Una obra puede ser bella o agradable de ver, pero para mí tiene que tener algo más, algo interesante que te llama la atención o que atrae tu mirada cada vez y quieres descubrir lo que te inquieta”.

(Valencia, Spain,1936; now living in Utrecht, The Netherlands), was the first and only Spaniard to study at the HfG of Ulm (Gestaltung School or Ulm School of Design), an institution conceived as heir of the revolutionary Bauhaus. Monika Buch, born in a German family, spent her childhood between Germany and Spain, where her family moved to avoid the Civil War and the Second World War, respectively. In 1956, after finishing her studies at the German School in Barcelona, her mother presented her a press clipping with an article from “Die Zeit” about the inauguration of Max Bill’s new building for the Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG), which prompted her to travel to the German city of Ulm and study at that school between 1956 and 1958. After her time in Ulm, she moved to Utrecht where she studied Pedagogy and Child Psychology. For two years she focused her activity in the field of toy design in the Dutch factory ADO, but from 1972 she devoted herself exclusively to her artistic work, with research focused on the form-color interrelation. The exhibition that Rafael Ortiz Gallery now dedicates to Monika Buch consists of a selection of pieces made by Buch in that period, between 1973 and 1979. Her work is based on what she learned at HfG. In the artist’s own words: “I always start from an idea or a question that I want to solve. I’m interested in perception: what I see and why, that’s why I like to work on a subject with variations. Aesthetics are important but many times are secondary. A work can be beautiful or pleasant to see, but for me it has to have something more, something interesting that attracts your attention or that attracts your gaze every time and makes you want to discover what it is that worries you”.
