iles from the nearest road on the great plains of Hungary, the Papp Lukács brothers lived off the vegetables they grew and the animals they reared. Their way of life was hardly touched by modernity – though they did own a radio, and rode mopeds to market. Over several seasons in the 1980s, photographer János Stekovics made a fascinating record of their rural lives, which is now a book

ános, and István divided their work so János was in charge of farming and stables – where he often slept in winter rather than his unheated bedroom – while István was housekeeper and chief cook

he twins travelled to market on mopeds – the only motorised transport they used. The nearest village was eight kilometres away ... and they only reached the nearest road halfway there. The money they earned was spent mostly on bread, coffee, sugar, and batteries for their radio

Regardless of the season, the twins washed outside at the well. Their homestead was not connected to the electricity grid, either, and was lit by kerosene lamps

y the well that supplied all their water. It was 8m deep and dug by hand. Laundry was washed here, and drinking water provided for both brothers and their animals. At its peak the farm had four horses, six cattle, five pigs, 20 sheep, 16 geese, 18 chickens, four dogs, five cats and a few ducks on the pond
