FIRSTWORD 6 | theRUF

I want to thank you all for believing in The RUF Magazine and helping me lead others to share their stories, experiences, successes and failures with thousands and thousands of readers across the globe from all walks of life. I am humbled by your support and very grateful. Collectively, our stories are impacting lives in a positive manner. I salute you! This edition of The RUF magazine focuses on leading your network, which is a network that you were born with and one that continues to grow based on your ability to lead your network throughout your life. I recall being told to remember those who I thought are or were good leaders, and those who are or were poor leaders. I was taught to copy, apply and imitate the characteristics of the good leader by their way of life, which included keeping the faith. I was also taught not to carry forward the values or characteristics of a poor leader. One of my favorite quotes is by Charles Spurgeon who said’ “A good character is the best tombstone. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forgetme-nots have withered. Carve your name on hearts, not on marble.’’ My plan is to do just that, and I invite you to join me. Everyone has their definition of what leadership is and how to measure a good leader. Whatever you think or have read about leadership, please remember “management” is objective and measurable; however, “Leadership” is subjective. It’s virtually impossible to measure, because it’s based on leading your Network. Leading your Network is a reflection of your value system that is a combination of values you were taught, the values of others, and adopting your own values. Your value system is the foundation of how you choose to network. The best value and norm system is one that does not have you looking over your shoulder. Values express your choices regarding why you do things and why you will not. As a leader of your Network, you are entrusted with responsibility. How you prepare yourself for that role, and how you learn and embrace the values inherent in that role, determine your success to lead your Network. The demonstration of your values attracts others’ interest in being associated with you and be part of your network. Think about it…the same is true for each of us. When we witness how others show up in the world we determine those with whom we want to collaborate or share friendship. In your journey of life, you are building a memory, and those memories become your story. Let it be a story that touches the lives and the hearts of others, sometimes without you even knowing!

Many would have us believe that networking is measured by financial success and that we live in a world in which everything is material or where power matters most. Some see the world as a ‘dog eat dog’ where you ought to get back at people or where lying is the right thing to do in a time of need, and anger is somehow a good thing. I do not include those sorts of people in my network. Those behaviors do not serve a higher purpose. This I know - leading your network is based on a value and norm system that holds firm regardless of circumstances and is based on a code of ethics. These high standards reflect your qualities and distinguish you from others. The resulting traits enable you to respond positively to the actions of others and maintain strong convictions while cherishing your desired outcome. By staying true to who you are, you instill confidence while showing consideration for others in your network. You adhere to strong moral principles with resilience in the face of difficulty while digging deep for the power to achieve or reach your success. And in sum, you will have the opportunity to apply the cardinal rule of networking, which includes displaying an intense feeling of deep affinity to help others. If you can understand and receive the knowledge of these elements of networking, everything will be different in your life and the result is YOU, as an effective leader of your Network. Networking is enjoyable and I love to make it fun. Your ability to lead others is directly influenced by your attitude. Your attitude and, subsequently your actions, set the tone for leading your Network. Day to day, task to task, minute to minute, you communicate your attitude through your actions. Your ability to lead your Network is acquired through the experiences of everyday life. It requires constant study, hard work and frequent practice. Because you are dealing with people and their emotions or dreams and fears, it also calls for a strong dose of imagination and a positive, upbeat demeanor. Optimism spiced with a strong sense of humor goes a long way toward becoming a respected leader. Lead your Network to success but remember, to be a Leader you have to be a Follower!

GENERAL (ret) WESLEY K. CLARK

the election

Leading

This article was first published in Huffington Post.

Every Presidential Campaign in the United States is uniquely important to determine war and peace, to set right national spending, the budget deďŹ cit and the economy, or perhaps to ďŹ x the future alignment of the increasingly partisan US Supreme Court. Each is also unique, as with the current campaign with a challenge from a third-party wealthy businessman, an election decided by the Supreme Court, the women, African American and Hispanic candidates! But this Presidential campaign season has been dominated by the antics of Donald Trump. Bursting onto the national political stage with bluster, bullying personal attacks, sloganeering and backpedaling, he has crafted a powerful style to seize the airwaves and draw attention to himself. His picture is everywhere with the blond mop of hair, the domineering gestures, and the beautiful family. He is a billionaire businessman adroitly transferring his audience winning TV personality to the political stage.

But actually, it is the underlying story of this election that is much more important, for this is an election of outsiders, on both the right and left. The American political system is at a critical inflection point. Old orthodoxies are being challenged, familiar coalitions are at risk, and new directions are needed. Why? And what qualities will this require of the next President?

And on the Democratic side, the long-anticipated front runner faces a 75 year-old Senator whose passion ignited the youth vote in a struggle that exceeded the pundits’ expectations, and drew small dollar contributions like never before. The media pants for the threat of an upset! The more the controversy, the higher the audience share - and this is the media’s lifeblood!

The recovery from the missteps of the Bush Administration which include two wars (one totally unnecessary), tax cuts, cheap money, lax economic supervision and regulation, and a crippling recession which devastated the wealth and economic security of most Americans. It has been long and arduous. Despite President Obama’s determined leadership on the economic side, and with six years of an increasingly obstructive and unruly Congress, it took years to replace the jobs lost in those few tumultuous months in 2008 and early 2009. Even now, many of the most lucrative of the blue-collar jobs seem gone forever. Labor force participation is down. Almost a million homes remain in default, enroute to foreclosure. College costs are still rising, along with student debt loads. Income disparity is the worst among developed nations, with median family income down 8% in real terms since the 2008 recession, and almost all gains in national income going to the top 1%. It is simply a fact that the old macroeconomic formula of low interest rates, low inflation, more open international trade, and the magic of the free market hasn’t worked as effectively as it did in 1985, 1995, or even 2005. Our vitally needed redeployment from the Mideast has raised doubts among some about the consistency of America’s aims, and our reliability as an ally. The long war against terrorists continues, while the American Dream, some say, is a fading memory.

The sound bites and fury within the parties arise from fundamental economic realities. On the Republican side many white male voters, especially in the Northeast, are less inclined to go along with now traditional value laden Republican platform focused on God, guns and gays. It has always been a bit of a sham, for a party that is fundamental anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-regulation, pro-trade, and pro-national defense. Now big business can no longer provide easy support with policies that are inimical to the economic interests of most Republican voters. Even the naked anti-government platform of the Tea Party has lost much of its appeal. These white male voters, and many of their families want government to work for them. They want jobs, and rising incomes. They want their social security and Medicare coverage. They are fundamentally “nativist,” a long strain in American politics, and don’t buy into the diversity that is characterizing modern America. Above all they sense that the era of low interest rate, low inflation freetrade isn’t working for them.

All this is the tinder for a political bonfire, but that tinder has been whipped into a fury by a media that feeds on conflict. Imagine, a challenger labels the former governor and son of one of America’s 4 most distinguished political families, “low energy” to his face! He calls another candidate “Lying’Ted.”

In consequence, we witnessed the Republican Party tearing itself to pieces. Donald Trump, the billionaire outsider led in delegates, decisively, after his crushing win in New York’s primary election and subsequent votes He is nakedly America-first. He’ll renegotiate trade deals, deport millions of undocumented immigrants, and toughen-up American response to threats if you believe his rhetoric. The early Establishment candidates are gone. The free trade, pro big business moderates like Jeb Bush are long gone. Ohio Governor John Kasich was the last in the race, and now he is gone. For two weeks, mainstream Republicans seemed to be converging on first-term Texas

10 | theRUF

Senator Ted Cruz. He is a Tea Party, doctrinaire, ambitious, right-winger himself far from the Republican mainstream. He is deeply unpopular among Republican colleagues. He became, for a brief period, the principal means of preventing Donald Trump from getting the Republican nomination on the first ballot of the July nominating convention in Cleveland. And then perhaps, some say, they would have taken delegate votes from both leading candidates for a second or third ballot, which would have bestowed the nomination on someone who better represents the mainstream party values. However, that ploy was a no-go when Cruz faltered badly. So, now the nomination is going to Trump. And he is scrambling to unify the Republican Party, even as he declares it is unnecessary. Who would have predicted nine months ago that the nominee would be Trump? No wonder the media loves this 2016 election! On the Democratic side, the underlying stresses of free trade, out-sourcing and foreign competition, together with income inequality, have surfaced so powerfully that many young Democrats want their politics plain and simple, not nuanced, subtle or practicable. They seem to discount both the great strides made by President Barack Obama and the tremendous experience and capacity that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton could bring to the Presidency. Before Hilary won the nomination, Bernie Sanders ran on an economic platform which had three most distinguishing planks - to break up the big banks, make college tuition free, and reform the campaign finance laws. All were worthy ideas perhaps, but were presented with a passion and simplicity that ignores considerations of practicability. To millennials, it sounds refreshingly new. To baby boomers it sounds like old time, pie in the sky political promises that would never be kept. Both Conventions, Democrats in Philadelphia and Republican in Cleveland, are now being organized despite the stresses and fractures to party unity. How they bring it all together to project unity and initiate their campaigns will be interesting indeed.

And then the general election will begin, ending with the vote on the first Tuesday of November, to decide the next President. Our next President will have to pull together a worried, splintered nation, forging a new consensus, and moving forward in perhaps new directions. What qualities will it take? An authoritative new and very readable recap of our nation’s forty-four Presidents. The greatest Presidents who I believe were Lincoln, Washington, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt worked hard to build teams and to forge consensus, they were measured in their rhetoric, and judicious in their policies. They thought strategically, saw the “big picture” and reached out to gain public support across all constituencies. The good Presidents brought previous experience in government, statecraft, or both to their office. And, a few Presidents had glaring weaknesses such as lack of conscientious attention to detail, or succumbing to Party rhetoric and slogans. Of course, the United States has changed over the past two and a quarter centuries. Everyone 18 and over, with few exceptions, can now vote. The world has shrunk, thanks to modern technology, so timely and effective communication is increasingly important. And issues, especially issues of foreign policy, have become much more immediate. The Presidency is no place for beginners! As I travel abroad, I am constantly approached by anxious men and women who are wondering what is happening in America, and for good reason. The American President’s decisions, actions, and inaction affect the whole world. I have supported Secretary Clinton. I believe she is by far the most qualified and capable person in either party to become the next President. If people abroad could vote, she would win in a landslide. But for Americans, this election is far from decided. Stay tuned for more drama, hype, and anxiety, as we wait and work for Hillary’s win in November!

Your Identity – The Time Is Now At no other time in history have we the need—or better opportunity—for people to create or retain ownership of their lives. It is time for each of us to be the leaders of our lives, to claim our rights as human beings. History will show this time as a transitional age—an age of human reform. As experience changes in this new economy this time of challenges presents a huge opportunity to retool and rebuild—from within. While some view the world as crumbling around us, others see a chance for a new beginning. Our time is now.

Our nations and communities need to focus on selfleadership before we are prepared to lead others. These leaders pave the path to creating economic change and much needed change in education, which is the only roadway to sustainable impact at all echelons, industries and countries. My experience working with communities throughout the years has brought me to understand that developing selfleadership and leadership capacity in our youth is essential to making our world productive and ensure our future growth as a global society. I also understand that transformation begins with ourselves and individuals who have a strong sense who they are and recognize and embrace their Identity. Those of us who work on ourselves first to become self-directed learners and realize our competitive edge will be based on understanding how to take knowledge, information and education and make it relevant to our skills, talents and 12 | theRUF

abilities. I learned throughout my life that all of us are equal because all of us have 24-hours. My ability to achieve success will always be what I do within that 24 hours to create good habits and exceptional skills. The more I have the more I can give. That is true servant leadership. When we self-actualize, we reduce the risk of letting others define us. We are not limited by labels. We are free to define who we are, and thus do what needs to be done for ourselves, others and collectively. It opens the door to freedom on many different levels. The process of ‘knowing thy self’ is one that traverses time. As Aristotle said, “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Our identity and our ability to create excellence in our lives are the possibility and opportunity for each of us to claim. Enjoy the journey.

Jurenne Hooi is CEO of the MaDi Foundation.

JURENNE HOOI

Leadership is about being responsible for your own decisions

Jurenne Hooi is a generalist with extensive experience in management, innovation and research. Since 2005, she has been CEO of the MaDi Foundation. MaDi supports residents of some districts in Amsterdam and the municipal Diemen by helping to solve problems in their social, civil, personal and financial situation. Jurenne is an enthusiastic people manager with ‘flamboyant’ traits and who loves to connect with people and connect people. She believes humor (including self-mockery) is important and ... she is completely into celebrating Carnival in Curacao!

The fight against poverty I believe my role in the fight against poverty is quite modest but hard at the same time. The point is that we can never completely get rid of poverty. It is not a problem with a straightforward solution, even though people tend to wish for simple solutions. There are various and complex processes to take into account when you are trying to solve poverty. You have to consider the context of the systems in which you are working. 14 | theRUF

However, this doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do. I see superb developments in the fight against poverty. I also see our customers develop their own strength to build a better life despite their situation. Social workers have an important task in supporting our customers in finding their buttons of intrinsic motivation which allow them to take initiative and make progress on their own. They are the ones that are doing the job! As far as I am concerned, this is the most important part of the whole process.

Poverty in everyday life MaDi supports over 5,000 residents in Amsterdam SouthEast and Diemen on a yearly basis. Poverty plays a major role in our work. Poverty is about people, about families and neighborhoods. It is about everyday things we tend to take for granted which are not affordable for the people we serve. For example, it is about children going to school without breakfast and people who don’t go to the dentist, because they can’t afford to pay the bill.

POP Up Your Life!

of the camera with a brief message to encourage the participants. That was a huge boost for the participants and the staff of the project. Nobody expected that to happen! That’s something you’d only dream about. She is such an amazing woman and leader!

POP up your Life

MaDi is implementing a new approach called POP Up Your Life! to make change happen. In the next three years, MaDi will cooperate with Stedman Graham (Oprah Winfrey’s significant other) who is a specialist in Identity Leadership Development, author, entrepreneur, and above all a great role model. The POP Up Your Life! approach is quite unusual. The program is aimed at reinforcing the personal strength of the participants by creating a Personal Development Plan (abbreviated as POP in Dutch). The dreams of the participants are the starting points for their POP. Participants discover that it doesn’t matter where you come from, because it is far more important to know where you would like to go. This principle is the starting point to work toward success, to break the cycle of poverty, and to shape the supporting society in Amsterdam South-East.

A wonderful surprise At one point during the POP Up Your Life! project the participants where chatting with Stedman Graham using Skype. All of a sudden Oprah Winfrey appeared in front

My definition of leadership In my view, leadership means first and foremost that I take responsibility for all of my decisions and choices, even when they aren’t the best. Leadership also means to show humility when needed, and to practice self-reflection regardless of my role as CEO and who I have in front of me, even if that is a child.

The importance of the surroundings in conversations

In personal and business conversations I am interested in creating a good ambience. In business I tend to have an intuitive leadership style alongside other leadership skills. This means I don’t just listen to the words that are spoken, but I also observe what happens non-verbally. Furthermore, it is useful to look at the physical environment since this can also say a lot about the topic or the person you are working with.

Taking responsibility The first step to taking responsibility is easy. You just ask yourself the same question again and again: “What is the consequence of my action or my decision?” Depending on the answer, the next logical step is a decision to make a change or not. A little self-reflection never hurt anyone!

Leadership in prison JOSEPH

OUBELKAS

Because of my unjust imprisonment for 4.5 years in several Moroccan prisons, I’m being frequently asked what I think of leadership. During the hardest and most difficult moments in life you have to endure the situation, even though you didn’t ask for it. Everyone in his or her life will meet such a situation at least once. The question then is: how do YOU cope with it? When they ask me what leadership means to me, I answer that it’s all about self-reflection and perspective. If you dare to take a critical look at yourself, you can learn a lot from it. How do you make the best of things? What’s the most important thing to focus on? I also learned not to pre-judge people during my imprisonment. For me, it’s the best way to get people on my side. That’s how my cellmates became my companions. That’s how I created my own world behind locked doors. I love it when I can win people over. Not by imposing my will upon them, but because they want it themselves. I believe that is the essence of authority. The highest goal that can be accomplished from leadership is if people voluntarily want to work for you, acting as ambassadors. Finding the leader inside you is a learning process that needs time and space. Before that comes the issue of knowing who you really are. Most people don’t even know that, so how can you possibly cultivate any leadership? Stedman Graham speaks about identity and I think that’s one of the first keys to successful leadership.

In my case, that journey consists of adapting at the right moments. When I was suddenly locked up at the age of 24, I was not able to do that. My world had collapsed. After a while, the hopelessness turned into a question: How fast can I deal with this situation and will I be able to look ahead? Sometimes I hear from the readers of my book ‘400 letters from my mother’ that they see me develop into someone who is in charge of his own life. I realize now that I’ve become a leader who has learned to adapt quickly. I am someone who is better at coping with disappointments and setbacks, and capable of coming up with constructive solutions. In other words: I’m getting the hang of dealing with life. Inspiring leaders have self-confidence and choose their own path. The trust that others put in you is an incentive to move forward. My mother was my strongest support during the years behind bars and without her and her 400 letters, I would never have emerged from prison in such a strong state. In addition, Nelson Mandela was a huge source of inspiration. I consider him a partner in misfortune and he also formed close friendships with his fellow prisoners and even the guards. I should also mention a book by Martin Gray, “For Those I Loved”, which is one of the best books I’ve ever read. His willpower and perseverance strongly confirm my belief that it makes more sense to be positive in life. They chose to be a leader in their own way. So what is your choice? Read the story of Joseph Oubelkas in de first edition of RUF magazine.

HAFSA LALOUCH

Our horizon is

never quite at our elbows When Charles Ruffolo (Ruf) asked me whether I would like to write something for his magazine, I felt thrilled and apprehensive at the same time. These feelings are not hard to explain. It’s because Charles and his Giving Back movement mean a lot to me. Giving Back taught me to be confident in approaching people and ask questions, and to see the world and its people as a land of opportunities and stories. I learned to be engaged and to network. Charles does this by example. He shared his story with me and my fellow Giving Back-ers, mentors, friends and associates. I carry this with me during my journey in life, socially and professionally. I have discovered the strength and joy of giving back and so I try to act accordingly. After all, it was Henry David Thoreau who said: “I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well. Unfortunately, I am confined to this theme by the narrowness of my experience.”

What I learned from that night as I got to meet such amazing people with various backgrounds and different views, is that giving also means receiving. It teaches you about the satisfying nature of connecting, which I will gladly continue through my lifetime of new being comfortable with new experiences and meeting people of different ages, social status and professional backgrounds. This has helped me tremendously in becoming a successful businesswoman.

One example I would like to share occurred during one of Charles’ NetworKing events. A fellow networker and I decided to go up to members that were by themselves and introduce ourselves. We did not have a spiel or any promotional intention. We just wanted everyone to feel at ease, enjoy, and give them an opportunity to tell their story. Surprisingly, I connected with someone who would later introduce me to my new boss at one of the top ad-agencies in the country and overseas.

I find the ability to network and give back to be a very relevant and critical lesson in today’s world, which seems to have shifted from a face- to-face to a face-to-screen view. Conversing never seemed as uncommon and arduous. In view of this, I am most appreciative that I get to call myself a member of Giving Back and NetworKing family. Most importantly, I get to call Charles a dear friend.

Yacht Upholstery Stoffeerderij Calypso is a company with a permanent team of thirteen team members who passionately practice their profession. This has resulted in a great company with a good and loyal customer base of which we are very proud. Last April the second generation of the family joined the management team of the company to ensure a confident prospect for the future. Father and son will continue to develop the company and its customer base even further. The (re)upholstery of yachts and ships is a profession in its own right. It requires precise tailoring, refined detailing and the necessary material knowledge to handle sunlight and moisture in the longer term. In short, there are high demands on the skills of the upholsterer. Calypso has extensive experience in this area. We renovate existing upholstery, develop completely new seating from scratch and manually produce seating and bed mattresses. Customers have very specific needs when they build yachts and they know exactly what they want. We take the time to identify the needs of the customer. Subsequently we ensure that the base part is custom made. We must also consider characteristics of the materials we are working with, since some materials stretch a lot and others do not stretch at all. Once the base part is finished we provide a proper protective layer between the foam and the cover to ensure both materials will last long. Customers can then choose between a coating directly placed against the outer wall or a coating on boards which are mounted against the wall. The advantage of the latter method is that it is sufficient to renew only a board in case of damage or discoloration. Yacht upholstery is not limited to the upholstery of sofas and chairs, but it also includes the upholstery of wall and roof panels, leather steering wheels, blinds, wall coverings, steering stands, loose cushions and custom made mattresses. If you are interested in the services our company has to offer, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone or email. 20 | theRUF

Be good for goodness sake Goodness does not have to be complicated. It just has to be illuminated.

KRISTIN ANDRESS & DR. RON JENSON

Goodness appears in many forms. Sometimes it is in telling the truth to ourselves and others. Sometimes it is lending a helping hand or simply a smile. In business, often Goodness appears in making an introduction as Charles Ruffolo, the NetworKing, so often does to benefit his friends. And, Goodness appears when we take a moment for ourselves to reflect gratitude for our life’s work, our loved ones, and the gifts we are given. The reciprocation of Goodness is necessary for leading a pleasant, productive, and prosperous life. When there is an absence of Goodness, it is palpable. The result is anger, anxiety, unhealthy competition. We have seen it on stages, in media, at various echelons of society, our personal relationships and most certainly in politics. It makes us uncomfortable and it certainly does not pave the path to a positive future. Whereas, exhibiting Goodness brings us together. It counteracts the negativity. Witnessing Goodness brings a lightness of being. Sometimes, a simple act of kindness even gets us through our day. Imagine if…in your acts of Goodness…you were the one helping others through their trials, and leading them to triumphs. Now, that is a good feeling. Illuminating Goodness means we have an opportunity to focus on what is going well in our lives and what can be better in our communities and cultures, and thus, our world. It means we consciously ask the question, “What can I do? Or an 22 | theRUF

even better question, “What must I do for the sake of myself or another?” In a time when there is terrorism and fear broadcasted each day, there is equally as much Goodness transpiring and the intention is to instigate even more Goodness. The good stories are need to be told, shared, beamed into the social media world, at our kitchen and dining tables and certainly in our board rooms. When we each take a stand for speaking of and demonstrating Goodness, we also take a stand for not allowing meanness or aggression. It is our right – and our responsibility to speak into the Goodness and elevate it…and not simply withstand the badness. Let us make that shift in our thinking and our actions. A fundamental trait of a good person is, perhaps obviously, to display Goodness. In any given day you will perform many roles - a parent, a business owner, a student, an employee, a friend, a public servant and more. Being a good person who reflects Goodness is who you are or who you choose to be each day. When Goodness happens…guess what happens? Your team members strive to do their best. Your family desires to share time together. Your business relationships flourish. Your protégés wish to emulate behaviors that produce positive reactions and results. Your opportunities become infinite. You…receive fulfillment. Goodness begets Goodness and the ripple effect is cumulative. Be Good for Goodness Sake.

What’s holding you back? Behind every adoption story is a child who cannot be with his or her biological mother. My life started as an “unfairy” tale. I don’t, however, consider myself as a survivor of my past. It rather makes me stand up for others. Now, giving back is a logical way of living for me. I always want to cross borders and cultural boundaries to feed my curiosity, get off the beaten track, and find the invisible force of my internal drive. I’m in charge of changing my life into a fairytale. It is called freedom.

‘Everybody can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.’ -Nelson MandelaThere are many people though who live without any sense of freedom. The challenges of today accelerate the need for change. For example, there have not been this many child refugees since the end of the Second World War. With the effects of climate change we’ll see a rising sea level and severe weather worldwide. Moreover, recent data shows that 793 million people still go to bed hungry. Youth unemployment causes problematic situations everywhere. We are all in this together. We need to do something. In 2015, world leaders adopted a new global development framework, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aims to eradicate poverty and inequalities and spur economic growth while respecting planetary boundaries. This is a great start for sure. The next step is thinking on a local level. It is important that local change makers identify local goals, priorities and opportunities related to sustainable development. One person impacts their family, community, country, and the world. Who will be that person who can translate these global goals into local business?

CÉLINE VAN DORMALEN I like thinking about local inspirational leaders who are making a change already. I have encountered many of these inspiring people. An example is my biological mother who I learned was running for mayor in her hometown. She was at a global UN conference for indigenous leaders. Now, she’s a social entrepreneur empowering her people with local projects. Last year I attended a youth leadership seminar where I met Charles Ruffolo (Ruf) for the first time. With his innovative network approach he influenced a new generation of leaders. The organizers of the seminar asked the audience which speaker they want to have next year. I suggested Ilco van der Linde, the co-founder of MasterPeace. MasterPeace is an award winning global grassroots non-governmental peace movement, currently active in more than 40 countries around the world. MasterPeace creates a globally interconnected network of partners, change makers and social enterprise opportunities to empower local leaders. There is good work underway by many. A couple of months ago, I told Ruf about my desire to do something on a global level. He replied, “What’s holding you back?” Ruf will be pleased to know that this month I started as the Regional Director Europe at MasterPeace. Together with my colleagues who are also change makers, we lead the way to a more sustainable world with less (armed) conflict. Nothing is holding me back anymore.

LEADING YOUR NETWORK “You can influence others by learning about what they want and then showing them how to get it. That’s leadership.”

Charles D.A. Ruffolo

-Charles D.A. Ruffolo, The NetworKing

William Shakespeare wrote, “All the world’s a stage…and all the men and women only players.” Perhaps he was right, but I tend to disagree. Imagine, if instead, we see ourselves as the leading woman or man? How would that change the trajectory of our interactions? Yes, I just disagreed with Shakespeare; however, imagine the cast of ‘characters’ in your life. This cast is a culmination of your network. Everyone plays a part, actually, a very important role. As I am known as the NetworKing, I could tell some tales about my characters! Fortunately, most are quite good because I distinctly care about those who are in my network. I look at it like this - in our personal and professional lives, we cast a net. In business, that net…is what works for us and allows us to also serve others. Leaders see. Leaders learn. Leaders realize their credibility with their network is fundamental to their success and those in it. If you sit at the back of a theatre, the cast won’t see you, but those centerstage in their networks know how to be seen and respected by the cast needed to network

32 | RUF

their way to success. They lead, and their network follows.

Lead and they will follow Even if you consider yourself more of a follower than a leader, there are some basic management skills you can apply to enhance your leadership posture in your network. As with most things in life, there’s a human dimension to networking. How you succeed at networking depends a great deal on how you lead. By focusing on the human dimension of networking and applying your personal attributes to inspire or even instigate, you can lead your network to success. Leading your network with conviction is paramount to networking your way to success. Without a lengthy business school lecture, I’ll share some of the foundations on which you can build your own brand of leadership. Everyone’s style is different, of course, but if you develop your own flair for leadership, you’ll be sitting front and center for your lifetime.

Principles of leading your network: 1. Know your network. You can’t energize and lead a network if you don’t know who you need to lead. 2. Build trust. Are you reliable? Why or why not? Work at becoming more reliable. Keep your convictions and promises, or don’t make them. 3. Display ethical standards. You know what’s right from wrong, so live by it. 4. Demonstrate character. Your character will demonstrate your true colors. Make sure it’s a rainbow or perhaps a mosaic. 5. Prepare for the worst. Things do not always work out as we would like. Have a back-up plan and remember, we’re dealt the cards of life and have to play them. 6. Take your network with you. Too many people forget to bring their network with them as they explore other networks. Name-drop when and where appropriate. 7. Combine and share your network. There are more contacts out there to go around than you may think. By combining your network with others, you expand and feed both. There are a lot of opportunities that you can’t readily see, but others in your network may recognize them for you. The same thing works in reverse. Reciprocation results in growing relationships. 8. Connect with your network. This means doing things with the people in your network, socially and/or professionally, and making an effort to understand their needs and wants. 9. Lead your network. Provide purpose, direction and motivation by demonstrating the value of your skill set and what you bring to the table. 10. Give to your network. This is the cardinal rule of networking. The challenge is to give without a hidden agenda. Remember, all things work for the best. The giver does receive, even if that is not your intention.

Basic leadership principles Leadership is the art of using direct or indirect power to influence the thoughts and actions of others in such a way that they succeed in achieving high performance and desired results. Leaders are not born. They are made. You don’t inherit leadership the same way as you do hair or eye color. It’s a skill that can be learned and perfected with practice. The first premise is to realize that every person and organization is different, so leadership modes will be different depending

on your particular situation. The environment in which you lead is shaped by everything that goes on around you, by who you are and what you know, as well as by the participants and what they know. In order to lead your network, you must interact and energize with respect, integrity, honor and reliability. These values are crucial. Only then will you be able to inspire others through purpose, motivation, support, vision and direction, with the result of accomplishing a certain task. Business management is objective and measurable – you want to get from point “A” to point “B”, and your performance can be measured. Leadership, on the other hand, is purely subjective. It’s virtually impossible to measure. The ability to lead is acquired through the experiences of everyday life. It requires constant study, hard work and frequent practice. Because you are dealing with people and their emotions, dreams and fears, it also calls for a strong dose of imagination and a positive, upbeat attitude.

The end goal When you can act and bring together everything within your power to provide purpose, direction and motivation in the lives of those with whom you come in contact, you’ll be ready to lead your network. It’s all about bringing the best and the most out of you and others. Leaders set the culture for organizations and make the difference between mediocre and exceptional performance. The ultimate “ABC’s” of leading your network consist of: • Action - the behavior put forth to accomplish a given task, based on what your character tells you is right for the situation • Basic knowledge, the information and skills required to get the job done properly; and • Character, that combination of values and attributes that underlie your ability to get things done and influence others to follow you. Combined, that’s leadership. Once you’ve applied the attributes of a leader, your next step is to pump up your network with motivation and enthusiasm. Now…go forth and lead your network. In doing so, they will learn the crucial facets of leadership too.

Margriet De Schutter

I am on the right track now Margriet de Schutter is a former short track skater. She made the award-winning documentary Going Deep for Vancouver and is author of the book, Stop & Continue. She is also the founder of the online platform Extopsporter. nl. She travels throughout the country to give lectures and workshops on dealing with (major) changes and life setbacks for athletes, organizations and companies. 41 | theRUF

Short track skating

From frustration to idea

Since I was a little girl I dreamed about becoming a short track skater. I wanted to be a skater at the Olympic Games. It was my one and only goal in life. I trained hard and often, but I failed to get my legs into the lowest deep-seated position that is required in short track speed skating. I discovered I had physical limitations in my ankle and calf muscles, which meant I could never be the athlete I wanted to be and would never be able to participate at the Olympic Games. I am thankful the people around me have never pushed me in a certain direction. I knew that I - and no one but me - had to make a choice. I decided to quit skating.

I went back to college and I was searching for a field of study. People sometimes say, “The best idea often arises out of anger and frustration.” I wasn’t really frustrated or angry at the lack of support for retired athletes, but I did know it could be better. I knew that many people could not understand that athletes find it difficult to quit their sport. They would say, “So tell me, what can be so difficult about quitting one of your hobbies?” I wanted to make a documentary to create awareness of what can happen when athletes quit a top-level sport, and to provide support for retired athletes. My plan was to follow three former athletes to allow the viewer to see what can happen to you when you stop.

To continue or to stop? My decision to stop competing in a top-level sport was not made in one day. I was in denial for a long time. I kept thinking that maybe I could still go to the Olympic Games. I thought my injuries needed to heal first or that maybe a miracle would happen. I kept on thinking of reasons not to quit. At one point, however, it was clear to me: I really wanted to quit. Then, however, I discovered there was a lack of support for athletes who quit a top-level sport. You hear athletes often say that they fall into a black hole when they quit their sport and I completely understand that. Your goal is gone. You don’t train anymore (or at least not as much as before). Your previous teammates don’t play the same role in your life anymore. Everything becomes different than before. The world you lived in seems gone.

Creating a documentary Since I had never made a documentary before, I decided to participate in a workshop to learn how to create it. My idea and pitch enabled me to win the Scenario Prize at the Northern Film Festival. Winning the prize meant that I could work with a professional production team to make the documentary. The jury put in one condition - the documentary should be about myself and not about three other athletes. The documentary was created by Thom Verheul (producer and director), Ismael Lotz (camera operator and editor), and me. In making the documentary I could see myself from a distance and I received new insights about my life and myself. In this way, it was a kind of therapy for me.

“Stay true to who you are and let go of any obstacles”

A change of career I have always been interested in different types of media. As a skater I was interested in the way a camera crew filmed and how they interviewed people. I already had an affinity with TV, camera’s etc. which made the process of creating a documentary simpler. I had collected information and data to make the documentary, but due to the fact that the content had to be about myself, I couldn’t use that information anymore. I was disappointed, as I wanted to share it realizing it could be valuable to other athletes. The solution was to build a supporting website. The website Extopsporter. nl is an online platform where people can find information and inspiration about life after being an athlete in a top-level sport. The Prometheus publishing house asked me to write a book after they had seen my documentary and read the information on my site. Based on these three products (my documentary, my site and my book) I am now giving lectures on to how to deal with setbacks and changes, and how you can use your vulnerability to become your strength.

Identity Shortly after I quit short track skating I asked myself the question, “Who am I when I don’t skate?” My identity seemed to be based on the girl that skated. I knew deep down that I was more than a skater, but skating had been such a big part of my life that it was only logical that my identity was based on skating. I had to rediscover who I was. Participating in a toplevel sport automatically means competition. When I started my own business, I felt the urge to be the best. I wanted to perform well. I came to realize that I did not have to be the best. I can just be myself and enjoy the moment. I set a new goal, which is that I can be satisfied at any time and I am allowed to be amazed at the little things in life. Changing my thinking and attitude allowed me to have many beautiful things come my way. I feel alive more! I may be myself more. I am allowed to be Margriet, and that is enough. I tell my story and if it inspires people. I see that as a bonus. I was recently privileged to experience people getting emotional when they heard my story. Isn’t that the best feeling in the world? It is such a privilege to be of significance to someone else!

A seemingly perfect world People did not understand that I wanted to make a documentary about something at which I had failed. They thought it would be better if I showed that I had succeeded. What I understand, though, is if nobody talks about failure and setbacks, then they don’t seem to exist and are not part of our lives. This is exactly

how we keep this so called ‘perfect world’ alive. I would love to break these thoughts of a seemingly perfect world. Setbacks are often seen as something negative. I’d rather think setbacks provide us with useful information. They give you opportunities to learn or change direction. You can use failure to become stronger and more aware of where you want to go in life.

Good enough If I had to give myself a message it would be, “You are good enough, just the way you are. Just dare to be Margriet!” In this seemingly perfect world we need to do well. We have to be successful and happy. I’d like to live in a way that everything I do is right, but that is not how life works. I’d love people to admit that some days things are very challenging. Let’s create a world where we can admit that. I believe we can be the best we can be if we allow people to be honest about life. I truly believe I am on the right track now and I love to share my ideas with others. I enjoy knowing that being me is good enough.

Margriet in a nutshell If you do all that you can to be you, you can never go wrong. Stay true to who you are and let go of any obstacles that prevent you from being who you are. Allow others and yourself to live in peace. Dare to see the good in other people, especially in the light of the current events around the world. Trust others to see the good in others and in you too!
