Herma & Charles Ruffolo The NetworKing
8 RUF
Welcome to “RUF” magazine! I am blessed to be able to publish the first edition. It is my honor and privilege to introduce “RUF”! The focus of “RUF” (pronounced roof) magazine is on NetworKing. The power of having a vast network of peers, influencers, business professionals, leaders of countries…. well, it is immeasurable. How you decide to utilize your network will be based on your values, character and your actions. My philosophy is based on the old adage, “The more you give, the more you shall receive.” In “RUF” magazine we will provide articles, tips, techniques and stories of what works to build your network – and also on occasion, what does not work. Our intention is to equip you with the insight, ideas, knowledge and perspective to energize your network and empower yourself to do so. Your personal and professional successes are amplified through your focus on developing, maintaining and sustaining relationships that serve – yourself, your network….and communities and countries. As for me (I am RUF!)….for more than 40 years I carefully studied and investigated what works best in life and in business. An undeniable staple…is NetworKing. Through “RUF” magazine I wish to pass on the experience, knowledge and wisdom of many years of training, lecturing, speaking, my books, and hosting networking events throughout the world with all levels of society and walks of life. My desire is to deliver an understanding of the power of networking. Often I am asked, “How did you get to be so inspired, motivated, and enthused with such a positive attitude?”
My response is, “I keep the spirit and faith in networking alive in my heart and soul….and I pay it forward.” Your network begins at birth, continues through life’s passages, and concludes with your legacy. “RUF” magazine was developed to keep you hopeful and empowered by knowing, “that today is better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today.” Throughout the year, our design and articles will feature a NetworKing philosophy of life, which captures the beauty of stories of results built on faith, hope, trust, respect, integrity, empathy, perseverance and making things happen. Our features will demonstrate how people from all aspects of humanity use their ability to give back, generate good, interact, influence and provide pure, practical, realistic, and understandable examples of NetworKing at its best. In this beginning, know that I want the “RUF” magazine to inspire, motivate and encourage you and others in your network to access a power that you were born with... Yes, your birth right, the right to build and maintain relationships by NetworKing. I hope you enjoy reading and applying the knowledge you absorb in “RUF” magazine and have the faith to help others in your Network. Remember, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” THANKS for your support, confidence and making the “RUF” magazine a part of your daily NetworKing life!

OMAR MUNI LEEF JE DROOM
Omar Munie is a young talented Dutch designer; because of his creativity and drive he created a well known brand in the Dutch fashion scene. His signature handbags are being viewed as the perfect combination between functionality and design.
From a hopeful refugee to a successful designer Due to the civil war in his motherland Somali Omar fled to the Netherlands at the age of nine with his siblings. His aim here was to start all over again and focus on the future. The mother of Omar wanted him to become an
accountant, but at a young age
he quickly discovered his passion for creativity and craftsmanship. Omar went to the Fashion Academy where he worked hard to develop his talent. Shortly after that, Omar made his very first handbag which was later sold to his classmate. During his study years at the MBO, Omar established his company ‘Omar
12 RUF
Munie Clothing’. After only being in business for six months Omar was invited to the popular television show Life & Cooking and RTL Boulevard. He even flew to New York where he presented his bags and eventually sold his products at one of Americans biggest department store Macy’s. After his first year Omar even won the prestigious price of ‘Best student of the year’ and was awarded his own atelier at the Binckhorstlaan in The Hague. After this award many more followed, such as, “Best entrepreneur under 25”and “Most innovating entrepreneur of 2011”.
Living the Dream
Currently Omar Munie Clothing exists eight years and a flagship store has been opened at the Noordeinde in The Hague. Omar can proudly add many big names to his portfolio. He has designed handbags for the council of The Hague, KLM, Schiphol and training centre Baak. Also, his bags are worn by many celebrities such as, Hillary Clinton, Jane Fonda, Yfke Sturm, Jessica Mendels, Leontien van Moorsel, Edsilia Rombley, Caroline Tensen, Kim Feenstra, Inge de Bruijn, Quinty Trustfull, Jeroen Pauw, Hint, Paul Witteman en Fatima Moreira de Melo.
Dream Factory
The Dream Factory is a concept developed by Omar Munie which has been in the making for a few years now and it finally got the forefront. Based on his own experience and feedback from his surrounding that he gathered around since the past few years, this new concept ‘The Dream Factory’ was brought to life. The Dream Factory is a powerful concept with a load of positivity. It shows that those who have been unemployed for awhile continue not to give up. They put their strength into passion for craftsmanship instead of focussing on what they can’t do. In the Omar Munie Dream Factory only recycled or ?organic tanned leather? are used. Therefore, an old jacket can be turned into a new Munie bag and a blouse can be turned into a new Ipad case! The clothing pieces that are being used for some of the products are collected by Omar Munie Clothing.Orders are also made to use recycled material or in a different sustainable way for organizations that have a strong focus on sustainability and entrepreneurship. These kinds of companies will quickly be linked with the ‘Dream Factory’. KLM, BMW, Schiphol, Education centre Baak and Fairtrade coffee Moyee were the first to work with the ‘Dream Factory’

The Total Body Scan allows you to gain insight into your health. During this examination the vital organs and blood vessels are examined. In order to obtain the best possible picture of your body, we include the Preventive Cardio Package with our Total body Scan. We recommend supplementing the Total Body Scan with the Complete Laboratory Test to examine blood, urine and other factors that may play a role in your personal situation. Scans alone provide extensive detail about the internal structures, but not about the functioning of organs, such as the heart, liver, thyroid glands and the kidneys. When initially contacting Prescan, you will have a consultation with one of our staff. They will complete a Medical history intake form with you, which will assist in identifying and assessing health risk factors.Furthermore, we will discuss your concerns or any symptoms you may be experiencing. A team of medical specialists will carry out the examinations. The team is made up of a radiologist, cardiologist, a general practitioner and a laboratory physician. All results are analysed by our specialists.
Medical examinations
By means of preventative medical examination (medical check-up) you can get insight of your health status. Maybe you suspect that something is wrong, or maybe you just want an investigation of your health as a precaution. The preventative medical examinations that Prescan provides are for everyone who wants to know how matters stand when it comes to one’s health, just as a precaution or because there are unexplained symptoms. The Total Body Scan provides a complete picture of your whole body. During this examination the vital organs and blood vessels are examined. In order to obtain the best possible picture of your body, we recommend the supplementary Cardio-Plus program as well as the extensive laboratory tests of blood, urine and other factors that may play a role in your personal situation. More info about the Total Body Scan
Regular examination
Prescan has, in cooperation with the medical specialists developed the “Repeat Total Body Scan”. This examination is an annual monitoring based on the results of your last Total Body Scan. All you have to do is notify us that you would like to have periodic examinations, and we will do the rest.

ENERGY AND PERSEVERANCE CONQUERS ALL
Joseph
Oubelkas
is
an
author
and
entrepreneur who was born and raised in the Brabants village of Raamsdonksveer. At age 16 he started his HBO Information Technology study and four years later became one of the youngest IT engineers from the Netherlands. After establishing his own IT company, during a trip to Maroc, his life would change forever during a bizarre chain of events that ended in prison. In London I found a huge billboard saying “Energy and Perseverance Conquers All”. Why I love this line? Probably because I was a top sport fanatic for some years, competed in the national championship swimming, and water polo. And probably because it is a truth when it comes to setting up ambitious projects like MasterPeace. But there is more. I think I mainly love this sentence because it provides hope for all and especially for people who have to endure tough challenges, for instance peace activists in times of growing tensions. In the last two weeks I met two amazing persons, who are a true example of this encouraging saying: Joseph Oubelkas and Monique van der Vorst. Learn about their stories and get inspired. Monique became disabled at age 13. She started hand cycling, trained hard, finally became World Champion (three times) and by 2008 in Beijing she was a Paralympics medalist. Last year, after an accident, suddenly her legs started to move. After some months she could walk again and … got RUF 29
disqualified for this years Paralympics in London. Monique started to train on a bike and now she is ready to join the Tour de France. Disabled or not, it’s the character that makes you win. Check out the English website of this wonder woman: http://www. moniquevandervorst.com/Monique_Van_Der_ Vorst/Welcome.html Six years ago Joseph Oubelkas, 24 years, was imprisoned in Morocco on the suspicion of smuggling marihuana, after the police found a container filled with hash in the proximity of where Joseph happened to be at that time. That’s it. They couldn’t prove any connection, Joseph was innocent, but was sentenced to ten years. In those years his mother sent him 400 encouraging letters: ‘don’t let them get you down’, ‘do something positive’ and of course ‘we love you’. During captivity he taught Dutch and English to fellow prisoners, he ignored the fighting, started friendships, read books of Mandela. Joseph: “They can imprison your body, but your spirit is always as free as bird”. After 4,5 years they released him. He just published his beautiful book “400 letters of my mother”, see his website http://oubelkas.nl/ or listen to his speech (in Dutch): http://www.youtube.comwatch?v=M3EC8xS1k4 I always have mixed feelings about ‘using’ VIPs to promote your social cause. Of course it may get you get more publicity, but I tend to worry that one may think that you need to get rich or famous before you can support a cause. Without purpose you may actually enlarge the bridge between your initiative and the general public, do you understand me? But Joseph and Monique are different. I see them as new, young heroes, no arrogance there. If they say things like ‘energy and perseverance conquers all’ young people will trust them and get inspired. So you can imagine that I am very proud that they both decided to help the MasterPeace Education Project in the Netherlands with some performances.

RACE THE
Whenever I start to hang my head in front of failure’s face, my downward fall is broken by the memory of a race. A children’s race, young boys, young men; how I remember well, excitement sure, but also fear, it wasn’t hard to tell. They all lined up so full of hope, each thought to win that race or tie for first, or if not that, at least take second place. Their parents watched from off the side, each cheering for their son, and each boy hoped to show his folks that he would be the one. The whistle blew and off they flew, like chariots of fire, to win, to be the hero there, was each young boy’s desire. One boy in particular, whose dad was in the crowd, was running in the lead and thought “My dad will be so proud.” But as he speeded down the field and crossed a shallow dip, the little boy who thought he’d win, lost his step and slipped. Trying hard to catch himself, his arms flew everyplace, and midst the laughter of the crowd he fell flat on his face.
52 RUF
As he fell, his hope fell too; he couldn’t win it now. Humiliated, he just wished to disappear somehow. But as he fell his dad stood up and showed his anxious face, which to the boy so clearly said, “Get up and win that race!” He quickly rose, no damage done, behind a bit that’s all, and ran with all his mind and might to make up for his fall. So anxious to restore himself, to catch up and to win, his mind went faster than his legs. He slipped and fell again. He wished that he had quit before with only one disgrace. “I’m hopeless as a runner now, I shouldn’t try to race.” But through the laughing crowd he searched and found his father’s face with a steady look that said again, “Get up and win that race!” So he jumped up to try again, ten yards behind the last. “If I’m to gain those yards,” he thought, “I’ve got to run real fast!” Exceeding everything he had, he regained eight, then ten... but trying hard to catch the lead, he slipped and fell again.
Defeat! He lay there silently. A tear dropped from his eye. “There’s no sense running anymore! Three strikes I’m out! Why try? I’ve lost, so what’s the use?” he thought. “I’ll live with my disgrace.” But then he thought about his dad, who soon he’d have to face. “Get up,” an echo sounded low, “you haven’t lost at all, for all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall. Get up!” the echo urged him on, “Get up and take your place! You were not meant for failure here! Get up and win that race!” So, up he rose to run once more, refusing to forfeit, and he resolved that win or lose, at least he wouldn’t quit. So far behind the others now, the most he’d ever been, still he gave it all he had and ran like he could win. Three times he’d fallen stumbling, three times he rose again. Too far behind to hope to win, he still ran to the end.
They cheered another boy who crossed the line and won first place, head high and proud and happy -- no falling, no disgrace. But, when the fallen youngster crossed the line, in last place, the crowd gave him a greater cheer for finishing the race. And even though he came in last with head bowed low, unproud, you would have thought he’d won the race, to listen to the crowd. And to his dad he sadly said, “I didn’t do so well.” “To me, you won,” his father said. “You rose each time you fell.” And now when things seem dark and bleak and difficult to face, the memory of that little boy helps me in my own race. For all of life is like that race, with ups and downs and all. And all you have to do to win is rise each time you fall. And when depression and despair shout loudly in my face, another voice within me says, “Get up and win that race!”
A poem Stedman Graham uses to close his speech. The poem is “The Race” by Dee Groberg.

WHAT IS
NETWORKING Words by Charles Ruffolo, The NetworKing
Where did you go yesterday and to whom did you talk? Did you make any new connections? If not, why? Too shy? Just don’t know how to connect? Don’t think it’s that important? Maybe your response is that you honestly don’t have the time or you simply can’t be bothered or, worse yet, you’re convinced that networking is just not for you. Wake-up call Whether you realize it or not, you’re missing out on a whole dimension of life. As a Professional Networker, Trainer, Speaker, Author and Publisher, I can guarantee that every single person with whom you come in contact has some connection to your life. Networking helps you discover that connection. If you remain isolated in your own vacuum and don’t intentionally reach out to people by networking, your life will be stripped of the infinite opportunities inherently available through a multitude of daily interactions. Throughout each and every day, there are countless opportunities to
56 RUF
connect you to people, places and things that can benefit your life and, in turn, benefit others. Will you choose to ignore those opportunities or will you choose to network your way to success? Anyone can network… and everyone does! Good news is that anyone can network and, in fact, you already do. Networking is the silver spoon that you were born with and, regardless of your nationality, status, career, inclination, wealth or lack of it, that spoon can feed you in greater ways than you’ve ever imagined. Once you become aware of the choices served up by a menu
G
of effective networking, you’ll never go back to a diet without it. Unfortunately, the power of your everyday connections often goes totally unrecognized and untapped. If fostered, these connections, can change your life if you acknowledge their power and utilize them properly. The alternative is to live with broken threads. Fortunately, networking works for children, college students, housewives and househusbands, the successful and those who aspire to success, the maid and the master, the idolized and the indigent. It is by no means limited to the corporate executive or the already influential person. In fact, that’s precisely my aim in writing this book – to show the average person how to network just as easily and effectively as the person who seems to have all the right bells and whistles already at his or her disposal. There is absolutely no one – I repeat, no one, exempt from the pervasive power of networking. Once you learn the simple but practical art of networking set forth in this guide, you’ll never regard casual interactions in the same way again. Once you get into the habit of networking, you’ll realize that anything – and everything – is possible. What is networking? Webster defines networking as “making connections among people or groups of a like kind.” I say that networking is being able to help or benefit from contacts with individuals with whom you have a direct or indirect relationship, in short, a positive process of mutual support. It’s about linking common interests that surface throughout life, about making connections among people you meet on a daily basis. It’s about gathering and exchanging information, assistance, ideas, resources and advice. It’s about benefiting from those vital links, and giving back in return.
Networking is not rocket science. It’s a common sense way of life. But you have to learn the ropes or the loop of success won’t swing your way. Networking is, indeed, a behavioural and organizational skill, but those are just fancy terms for something so basic and commonplace that you already do it without thinking. The problem is that you most likely network on such a nominal basis that you may not recognize it and, therefore, it barely impacts your life the way it could. Networking is a philosophy of life. It’s about not settling for the status quo. It’s a philosophy built on trust, respect, honesty, integrity and making things happen with a lot of enthusiasm. It’s an art of interacting with and influencing people while listening to their needs and wishes. And it’s a science of chemistry between people in all walks of life. It’s pure and practical and, above all, it works. Contrary to popular opinion, networking is a lot more than marketing or selling. It’s literally a way of life. Personally, networking helps me to deal with some of life’s minor annoyances as well as with my most challenging obstacles and opportunities. It helps me to identify clients and increase my profitability. It means exposure for me – as it will for you – in untold ways. There’s is no reason why you can’t learn how to foster and build a network from the ground up, and then make it a ritual in your daily life, the same as I have with mine. When you do, you’ll experience countless rewards. Once you make it a habit, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without consciously networking all the time. It’s addictive – hopefully the best – or better yet the only – addiction you’ll ever have. In my own business, The NetworKing BV, I put forth, in my training sessions, some basic management techniques
RUF 57
AND WHY
DO IT? “Networking is by far the easiest,
most efficient and least expensive way to success … no matter what your goal.” that are essential to networking. Anyone can apply them. It doesn’t take a Ph.D., or any degree at all, for that matter, to become an effective networker – just basic awareness of the process, application and practice. You can network more effectively. Don’t be duped into thinking that it’s too tough or that you’re just not outgoing enough to swing it. I know for a fact that everyone, no matter what his or her level of education or predisposition, can learn to network. Why do it? Without networking, you’ll have a much more difficult time finding a job, locating the perfect house, hiring the right employee, attracting the right partner or spouse, acquiring new clients, making a sale, or just about anything else you set out to do in life.
58 RUF
Perhaps you’ve wondered: “Why am I never asked to do this or that?” My response: Do you wait or do you create your own opportunities? “Where can I find new markets?” My response: Anywhere and everywhere that people meet. “How do I gather valuable information?” My response: Do you want the short or the long route? Networking will cut your time and effort in half. As you know, today’s marketplace is fiercely competitive. You can be as street smart and book smart as they come, but if you don’t know how to connect with other people, no amount of diplomas, degrees or savvy will pave your way. Networking will.

hey abound in exceptional talent and good works; yet, they are your typical unsung hero. They rise to the occasion in a time of need and shine best in trial’s darkest hour and seasons of severe tests. Such a person is one whom we would call a diamond in the rough. Like naturally occurring diamonds, they appear quite ordinary, even rough on the outside, but their beauty and worth comes from the extreme pressure under which they are formed and the harsh process of cutting and polishing that are used to reveal their inner beauty and value Every one of us is a potential diamond in the rough. to our Maker, others, and ourselves. Are we willing to endure the pressure, the cutting, and the polishing of the Master Jeweler to bring out the diamond within us? Most of us are not. But, for those of you who really want your diamond to break out in magnificent radiance and stunning beauty, read on! Let’s take a look at diamonds and see how their formation and qualities parallel the lives of true believers. A diamond is just carbon (essentially the same thing as charcoal) in a very concentrated form. Yet, when mined, cut, and polished, it becomes the most precious gemstone in the world. Diamonds are formed about 161 km (100 miles) below the Earth’s surface, when carbon is subjected to a temperature of at least 400°C (752°F)

and 435,113 pounds per square inch (psi) or 30 kilobars of pressure. Where diamonds are formed, the pressure exceeds 700,000 psi and temperatures over 1200°C (2192°F). As we try to imagine the extreme temperature and pressure under which diamonds are formed, it brings to mind the fiery trials which children of God must undergo to develop true godly character. 1 Peter 1:6-7 describes the beautiful outcome of being tested by God’s fire: “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Clarity – a measure of its flaws, or inclusions that can be seen in the diamond Carat – the weight of the diamond (in milligrams) Colour – ranging from icy white transparent to light yellow. Here, too, we can see some similarities with the life of the believer. Cut The more we come under the sharp edge of God’s Word and allow it to pierce and shape us, the more valuable we will be for His Kingdom. Someone once said that God cannot use us until He has first wounded us. This wild human nature and spirit must be broken in order for God to effectively use us. His desire is that our lives be transparent and flawless. We must be sincere and true (1 Cor. 5:8).
The conditions of high pressure and temperature way beneath the Earth’s crust must be ideal for carbon to form into diamond. Slightly less than this, we end up with graphite (a soft black mineral) instead of the extremely hard, clear crystal we know as diamond. That’s why we have to be willing to endure the pain of trials and godly discipline if we want God’s character to be perfected in us. James puts it this way: “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (Jas. 1:2-4).
Clarity As the apostle Paul says, we must not have “spot or wrinkle or any such thing,” but rather “be holy and without blemish” (Eph. 5:27). Like flawless diamonds we must reflect and disperse light because we are the light of the world to disperse the darkness of this evil age (Matt. 5: 14-16).
A diamond is the hardest known mineral. It’s so hard that it can only be scratched by another diamond. It’s the unique molecular structure of the carbon atoms that makes a diamond very hard. As we allow Christ to live in us we will have His diamond-hard strength to withstand the pressures of life and not be easily scratched or wounded by the words or deeds of others.
This character is developed, not inherited. It cannot be bought, it must be earned. It cannot be achieved by avoiding God’s divine process. We must be willing to endure the Master Jeweller’s refining process. It is this process that will shape and refine us from being diamonds in the rough to become sparkling jewels. A verse from the old hymn, How Firm A Foundation puts it very beautifully: “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply. The flames shall not hurt thee; I only design. Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.”
Shaping Diamonds Before diamonds become beautiful jewels, they must be cut and polished by hand or machine using steel or diamond blades or laser. The cut diamond is then polished by a rotating wheel coated with an abrasive diamond powder. God’s purpose is to refine and perfect us. He will use whatever means necessary to bring us to the point of being “a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Eph. 4:13). Diamonds are judged according to the four C’s: Cut – the geometric shape into which it has been cut
64 RUF
Carat and Colour God’s diamonds will be judged, not by the colour or roughness of their exterior, but by the content and quality of their interior, in a word, by their character.
The world’s biggest and most prized diamonds adorn the Royal Sceptre and Imperial State Crown of the British Monarchy. These precious gems are worth an incredibly vast sum. But even these cannot be compared to those who will shine like diamonds in the Heavenly Father’s realm on that day when He makes up His jewels (Mal. 3:17).
