Cayenne S E-Hybrid

Performance and efficiency – The new Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid proves that these two characteristics can be delivered in equal measure. This was demonstrated during a recent international media road test event, where the world's first premium SUV plug-in hybrid was put through its paces for the first time, over a total distance of more than 4,200 kilometres. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid on average consumed just 5.6 l/100 km with the best result coming in as low as 1.4 l/100 km, thus 2l/100 km below the NEDC fuel consumption level of 3.4 l/100 km.

The competition now prepares for two stringent evaluation days in March. These offer the panel an opportunity to reacquaint themselves with the vehicles on specific aspects including ergonomics, aesthetics, fuel consumption, build quality, environmental friendliness, safety features and value for money. The Jury members will also have access to independent performance test data, comparative pricing and specification data, as well as comparative parts pricing data.

Sometimes I wonder if car reviews are actually read and appreciated by the subject's prospective buyer. Whereas I'm sure that small hatchback and family sedan shoppers do a substantial amount of homework before hitting the showrooms, Text Hanjo Stier Images Audi South Africa do the punters of an Audi A8 long wheelbase do the same?

Surely the boutique hotels, chauffeur companies and human resource directors of this world don't scour the internet or print media for airbag counts and kilowatt figures of such cars.

extra length (13cm) makes it one of the biggest barges in the office car park but Audi have done a phenomenal job of masking its bulk with clean lines and understated details.

In all probability, almost none of them compare 0-100 times or cup holder size of an A8, S-Class, Seven Series, XJ Jag, Range Rover or Bentley.

Think of the Audi A8 long wheelbase as a beautiful, voluptuous lady wearing an elegant dress. She's a big girl alright but timeless fashion and tasteful make-up allow her to waft around this year's embassy ball with confidence. Other women m ay h ave c l e ava g e o r turquoise eye shadow but the ladyship A8 has style on her side.

In my humble opinion – and it is just that – they don't aspire to this longer A8 by dreaming of it at night and saving up for a decent deposit. The biggest Audi limousine ends up on their driveway because they have a good relationship with the brand (or dealer) and it attracts them on more emotional, unquantifiable levels. Looking at the hefty white specimen outside my house right now, I can determine a few reasons already. Yes, the

Another reason to consider this particular car is its unbelievably brawny engine. If you really want figures, this V8T model has a 4.2-litre twin-turbo Diesel V8 with 285kW or a colossal 850Nm. That last amount would be more at home in a big truck

brochure and thus endows the car with completely effortless performance. Delivered to all four 20-inch wheels via Quattro allwheel-drive, I even beat Audi's acceleration claim by sailing past 100km/h in just 4.51 seconds; and supreme comfort. None of the other Germans bring their turbo-Diesel V8 sedans to our shores so this V8T's only real adversaries are the Touareg and Range Rover. Refreshed in April this year Audi's flagship range boasts with all-aluminium bodies, improved insulation and better technology to further increase efficiency and refinement. The 8-speed automatic gearbox can get harsh when going from coasting to full throttle but other than that, it doesn't put a cog wrong.

Combined with the engine's immense twisting power, the V8T usually cruises at or below 1,500rpm. Its air suspension does a sterling job of isolating passengers from rough road conditions except for the sportier settings of the car's drive mode selection. This also puts the engine and gearbox on heat. Steering feedback is slightly numb (as it should be in a big luxury car) yet very quick, the A8L turning in with verve and not requiring much effort to snake around a mountain or valet parking area. However, I sense that you may be more interested in what life's like in the back of this R1,659,000* liner. For starters, the rear doors are just as large as the front ones so embarking astern doesn't feel like a second

class affair. Even when I had adjusted what felt like a hundred settings of the driver's seat to suit my six foot plus frame, there was still a surplus of legroom available for any VIP behind me. Over and above the cosseting ride and opulent space of this vehicle, rear passengers will enjoy individual climate control, privacy window screens and entertainment. I would highly recommend the decadent Bang and Olufsen Advanced Sound System for R85,000* which, in my mind, has no equal in the market. Despite the plethora of standard features, you can still make merry with the expensive options list to individualise your A8L. Our test car featured night vision and clever LED headlights yet the standard

The screen of Audi's MMI infotainment system rises out of the central dashboard which, in this car, was decorated with a stunning, matt, deeply-grained and dark brown wood. I caressed it a lot, sorry Audi. Other textures, materials and lighting also mesmerised me – as did the softclosing doors. PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS KIA: the most satisfying brand to own according to South African consumers.

With nominations in nine of the 22 categories, KIA Motors continued its history of outstanding performance in the 2014 Standard Bank People's Wheels Awards, presented at a gala event at the Montecasino Ballroom in Fourways, Johannesburg. More than 60 000 votes were cast over 22 categories in the 2014 survey with the public boldly declaring that the striking KIA Rio is the year's best “Compact Commuter”. A former winner of its category, the KIA Picanto ended in second place in the “Budget Buys” category, while the merging of two compact SUV categories saw the KIA Sportage move down to second place in the 2014 results. The sporty KIA Cerato Koup finished in third place, after the

BMW 2 Series and Audi TT Coupe, in the “Sport Coupes” category. The record number of responses in this year's survey saw KIA Motors emerge as the 2014 Brand Champion, unseating Mercedes-Benz at the top of the honours list, with Audi in third place. The win represents a giant leap for KIA Motors, which ended in third place in last year's rankings. David Sieff, Marketing Director at KIA Head Office commented, “It's nominations and awards like these that really lifts the whole Kia team and everyone should be excited that we continue to make great strides in bringing fantastic product to the South African motorist...”

CLS

Updated

A four-door coupé is a contradiction on wheels. We spent a day with the new Mercedes-Benz CLS at its recent launch.

Launched in 2005 and updated five years later, this sleek sedan combines the grace and lines of a coupé with the space and practicality of a four-door sedan. Mercedes recently gave the car some mild tweaks and invited us to witness these ourselves. A four-door coupé doesn't really exist yet here it is, parked outside a boutique hotel ready for eager journalists to test.

The Mercedes-Benz South Africa staff was quick to point out more new details in an amazing light and laser presentation while quietly slipping in some interesting statistics. This model range sold over 120,000 times worldwide, southern Africa making up about 4,400 CLS sales and adding to the firm's local success in the luxury car market. Customers looking for more irrationality will be sad to learn that the CLS Shooting Brake (station wagon) will no longer be available on local soil.

This second generation shows much bolder lines and stronger brand DNA with its wide face where its new light clusters are the biggest giveaway that the CLS just received a minor As a sort of compensation, the mild-ish update to this face-lift.

Honda's affordable new 7-seater

Mobilio

Value for money is high on most car buyers' agendas so the cheaper segments of our market are bustling with new vehicles.

Honda already offers the compact Brio hatchback and sedan at reasonable prices but has just launched another budget car: the Mobilio. Honda did substantial research in sub-Saharan Africa and found enough demand for vehicles which mix economy with space, comfort and practicality. They also discovered that whereas the MPV (multipurpose vehicle or van) segment is declining, its entry-level section shows an upwards trend. That means small van-like cars such as the Toyota Avanza, Nissan Lavina and Suzuki Ertiga are in high demand because they are

SPRINT REVIEW

C220 BlueTEC

SPRINT REVIEW

Avantgarde 7G-Tronic

What you need to know: The new C-Class was introduced earlier this year so this car commands a lot of attention. It's available with turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel engines, of which this is the smaller one. What you concede in performance, you'll make up in fuel savings. Merc claims 4.3L/100km. Some more facts: Looks like a small S-Class, rides more like a BMW than a Mercedes. The adaptive damping system “Agility” comes as standard, as do booming bass sounds and

a comprehensive active 'n passive safety package. Available in 11 exterior and five interior colours, depending on model and options selected. A fresh C220 BlueTEC costs R459,000*. If you tick ALL the boxes, it will add another R294,250*. We suggest LED Intelligent Lights (R20,000*), Media Interface (R3,250*) and upgraded interior trim but make sure it isn't all-black as the car is well-insulated and ten minutes of direct sunshine turns it into a cauldron.

Where we went: A friend's house, burger restaurant, the Kwikspar down our road and the International Airport. The obligatory two large suit-cases and two pieces of hand luggage fit into the 480L boot just fine. Rear leg room is impressive and our car's active steering made parking a doddle. You should watch out for: Although Mercedes-Benz charges extra for the 7GTronic automatic gearbox, most C-Classes leave the factory with it already preinstalled.

Pathfinder 2.5 dCi SE Automatic

We can't comment on the six-speed manual 'box as we've never seen it in a CClass. If you somehow find one, you may want to steer clear. Most Mercs should be automatic.

W h a t i t i s : N i s s a n' s Pathfinder is a big, hardy SUV with a generous body on an old-school ladder frame chassis. Unlike a bakkie, it has car-like rear suspension. Available only with (selectable) 4WD, you may choose between an auto turbo-diesel V6, manual or auto 2.5 fourcylinder turbo-diesel. This is the latter model.

Where we went: The Cederberg and surrounds, using both popular access roads into Kromrivier. We also trekked further east into the Nature Reserve where the Pathfinder laughed at overgrown farm tracks, big drainage ditches, sizable mud pools and rocky inclines. 4WD and Low Range weren't used very often.

Five-speed auto' shifts smoothly and always keeps the 140kW / 450Nm engine in its power peak. Highway cruising at 120km/h is surprisingly quiet and relaxing. The car's vastness and fake chrome grill took some flak but nobody can accuse the Pathfinder of copying others. It certainly looks unique.

Why you'll want one: It's new and desirable with added dynamism and specs. Our real-world fuel use hovered around 7L/100km from the 41L tank but high milers should easily do better. Mercedes-Benz seals the deal with a full sixyear/100,000km service plan.

What else: There's a newer version available overseas but this supersized hunk of metal is still very impressive. Interior space is immense, quality more utilitarian - it feels like an American car. Depending on folded seats, cargo capacity is 190L (seven-seater), 515L or a colossal 2,091L.

What we loved: Two people's entire weekend luggage on the humungous rear seats leaves the cathedral-sized boot empty. Radio, ventilation and instruments are basic but easily understood. Front seats are comfy but gave us back-ache after a few hours. The ride is super-comfortable.

Why you should buy one: Big space, big comfort, big presence. This automatic 2.5 dCi SE costs R505,800*, the manual is R15,700* cheaper. Posh models cost much more. A big 3-year / 100,000km warranty and 90,000km service plan are included. Nissan has 115 dealers in South Africa and five in Namibia.

TIPS: FUEL SAVING

Avoid short trips.

We Specialize in dyno tuning and upgrades to 4x4, SUV and MPV vehicles.

GTi

Text Hanjo Stier Images Peugeot South Africa

I am writing to you today from the comfort of a sea-side villa where the beach is within spitting distance and a particularly jovial dog has been avoiding capture by its owner for the best part of ten minutes. Why did I come here? Among other things, to get my head around Peugeot's new 208 GTi.

For the last few months, my garage has housed a whole flurry of hot hatchbacks; in all shapes, sizes and from all corners of the world. This is a good thing.

Where Peugeot's 206 GTi still used a naturallyaspirated 1.6-litre motor, this new 208 range-topper benefits from a modern 1.6-litre, direct-injected, high-pressure, turbocharged four cylinder developing an astonishing 147kW (200hp) at 5,800 rpm and 275Nm from just 1,700 rpm onwards.

Efficiency and economy are current trends with car makers and buyers so I think it's brilliant that the hot hatch segments have adapted quickly; and That means it'll rocket to adapted well. 100km/h in 6.8 seconds (t'is true, we clocked 6.4 at Every new pocket rocket sea level) and its speedo which has the satin sheet needle can easily reach the pulled off it at a motor early 200's. show can brag with a smaller engine but bigger All the while, it claims to power. Other versatile and hot hatchback-worthy items are 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, ABS brakes with EBD and EBA, ESP, six airbags, auto lights and wipers, ISOFIX anchors, full size spare wheel, the world's tiniest adjustable sports steering wheel with buttons, parking sensors and auto-steer park assist. More luxuries come in the shape of climate control, a cooled cubby hole, onboard computer, cruise control and speed limiter, 60/40 folding rear seats, some leather trim, very comfortable sports seats at the front and a radio / USB / Bluetooth audio system with navigation and touch screen monitor.

but all this is irrelevant as tall; more importantly the 208 GTi is all about the though, this car is almost devoid of turbo hesitation way it drives. and, given the slightest As mentioned, the front whiff of petrol, will shoot sports seats look hard-core forward like a naughty but are actually complete little puppy whose owner Red to black gradients, softies with good support – thought it was ok to drop silver accents and red something that's mirrored the leash. stitching plaster a crisp, by the typically French It goes and goes and goes! suspension. modern cabin. dollied up with extra chins and fins, bigger bumpers, GTi badges along its flanks, stylized exhaust pipes and pointy chrome bits on its grille.

Just like its siblings, the 208 GTi's instruments have been raised from behind the steering wheel to their new position just under the windscreen. A few seat and steering wheel adjustments fix any visibility issues but the odd-numbered markings and generous red zones on some gauges take a while to fathom.

Priced from R309,900* with very few optional extras left to tick, you also get a 3-year / 100,000km warranty and 5-year / 60,000km service plan with what I think is a That teeny steering wheel proper, modern hot hatch. is linked to a very direct mechanism and, together Lots of power, fun, easy to with a crisp six-speed park, blessed with great manual gearbox, helps to handling, versatile and elevate the 208 GTi's fun frugal enough for that trip factor to even higher levels. to the seaside.
