NEWS & NEW MODELS European Car of the Year

The new Opel Astra is "Car of the Year 2016" and therefore winner of the most renowned award in the industry! The 58-strong jury of automotive journalists from 22 European countries awarded the Astra a total of 309 points. Astra emerged as the winner from seven finalists. More than 40 new cars, from sporty roadsters to premium limousines and SUV’s, were among the contenders.

World’s Most Ethical Ford Motor Company was today named a 2016 World's Most Ethical Company for the seventh consecutive year by the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices. Ford is the only automaker to earn Ethisphere Institute's award. The World's Most Ethical Companies are assessed on a framework developed by the Institute. Honorees are given top ratings in five categories from ethics and compliance, corporate citizenship and responsibilities, the culture of ethics, governance and leadership, and reputation.

Continental wins tests

The ContiSportContact 5, an award-winning performance tyre from Continental, has dominated summer tyre tests in Germany with the popular size 225/45 R17. A total of 11 products from mainstream brands were tested, as well as three cheap offerings from the Far East. Continental emerged as the clear winner, scoring 278 out of 300 points - 11 points clear of a new competitor tyre.

Honda Type R nominated The World Car of the Year jury has voted Honda's Civic Type R as a finalist in the "World Performance Car of the Year". The nomination is the latest good news in a successful year for Honda's 'race car for the road'. The car hit overseas showrooms September last year and secured its first motorsport titles taking the drivers and constructors championship in the British Touring Car Championship. The two French publications “Echappement” as well as “L'Automobile Sportive” declared Civic Type R sports car of the year, with the latter being decided by readers themselves.

Two awards for BMW

Three awards go to BMW in the “auto motor und sport” readers’ vote "BEST CARS 2016": the new 7 Series and the second generation BMW X1 were the readers’ first choice in the categories for “Luxury Performance” and “Compact SUV”. And for the sixth time in succession readers chose the BMW 5 Series for the BEST CARS award in the “Upper Mid- Range” category.

Mahindra lights up matric lives Mahindra S.A. has initiated a social responsibility program in conjunction with Rotary South Africa to light up the lives of less fortunate matric pupils. The program donates various stationary and solarpowered, battery-operated lamps so that students from disadvantaged communities have sufficient light to study by after dark. The company will supply 5,000 lamps and pencil bags to matric pupils at selected schools in South Africa. MSA's logistics supplier has taken on the mammoth task of transporting this important cargo to the various handover points.

Supercars at Simola Hillclimb

Visitors to this year’s Jaguar Simola Hillclimb are in for a treat, with the most exotic line-up of cars yet in the event’s history. Aside from the largest-ever number of entries for Classic Car Friday and King of the Hill, this year is set to include a new SuperCar Shootout, an intriguing new category for hybrid-powered vehicles, and the first-ever Formula 1 car to take on “The Hill”.

MX-5 wins again

Jeep’s new line-up at Geneva Jeep ® and its legendary spirit returned to the 86th Geneva Motor Show with a stand "packed" with history and excitement where past models met those of today to celebrate the brand's 75th Anniversary. More than just an important achievement, this is also a milestone on the brand's ambitious future faced with the same determination which made 2015 the third consecutive year of sales success for the brand in the EMEA region and the fourth consecutive globally.

To celebrate the milestones, visitors were shown three outstanding classic models: a 1941 Willys-Overland MB, a 1946 Willys Wagon and a 1963 Jeep Wagoneer. As further confirmation of Jeep's path from the past to the present, all new 75th Anniversary special editions were showcased on the stand and should be available at dealerships across the region starting from the second quarter of 2016, featuring an exciting livery, celebratory badges, exclusive interiors and equipment.

Mazda took triple honours in the 2016 UK Car of the Year Awards. The all-new Mazda MX-5 was crowned both the Open Top Car of the Year and the overall winner of Car of the Year, whilst the Mazda2 won Best Supermini. The MX-5 has also just won the 2016 World Car of the Year award. It is the second Mazda to win the award, following Mazda2 in 2008. The third generation MX-5 was one of three finalists in 2006, as was the Mazda3 in 2014. In addition to taking the main award this year, the MX-5 has also been named World Car Design of the Year. It is the first time in the history of the awards that a single model has taken both titles.

47 years at VW On the 1st of April 1969, Julia Potgieter walked into work at Volkswagen for the first time. 47 years later, she will be retiring from Volkswagen with her head held high after an amazing career. At a special tea held in her honour she was able to reminisce with the VWSA Chairman and MD, Thomas Schaefer, about her years of service in the company. Julia is a special woman at VWSA, loved by many and respected by all her Finance colleagues. Not only is she the longest serving woman at VWSA, but currently the longest serving employee.

40 years of the W123 Mercedes At its launch in January 1976, the Mercedes-Benz W123 series offered a persuasive combination of elegance and technical innovations. The saloon was the first model to become available. The range was expanded a year later by the Coupé and, for the first time, an Estate model. Over the course of the next ten years almost 2.7 million vehicles were built, among

these also long-wheelbase sedans and special body chassis. The era of the 123 model series marks a particularly successful chapter in the success story of the E-Class, as the intermediate model from Mercedes-Benz was called from 1993 onwards. The new E-Class, which was just launched at the end of January this year, continues this success story.

Volvo XC90 wins! Bundu-bashing with an Italian thoroughbred!

MASERATI’s first SUV launched Maserati chose the 86th Geneva International Motor Show to introduce the first SUV in its hundred-year history: the Levante. As with many Maseratis from the past, the new car's name was inspired by a wind: the “Levante” is a Mediterranean wind that can change from a light breeze to an irresistible natural force in an instant, mirroring the character of the first Maserati SUV.

The new Levante is the ideal complement to the Maserati range which now covers the entirety of the global luxury automotive market. Performance, Exclusivity and Design are characteristics for this new Maserati which is based on the Quattroporte and Ghibli architecture. This has been refined to meet expectations of the market in which Maserati will compete for the first time.

The new Volvo XC90 took top honours at the WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year 2016. Facing tough competition in this year’s 12-vehicle strong line-up, XC90 was a worthy contestant, taking S.A.’s most prestigious motoring prize. Reflecting changing trends in buying patterns, XC90 is the second Volvo (following S40 in 2005) and the second SUV in the competition’s history to be crowned the winner. In addition, XC90 garnered accolades from multiple international publications, Car of the Year contests, and road safety awards.

OPEL shows GT Concept Opel’s GT Concept celebrated its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2016. This trendsetting sportscar expresses the continuous innovative strength of Opel breathtaking in its shape, reduced to bare essentials. The thoroughbred athlete with a front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive takes Opel's sculptural design philosophy to the next level.

The sports car is avant-garde yet purist, and renounces everything that disturbs the pure form. The GT Concept has no door handles or door mirrors. "The GT Concept shows what Opel stands for now. We are confident, ambitious, innovative and want to win over more customers with every new car," said Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.

Bolt

Audi Tata

LAUNCH REPORT

H New Tata is a Bolt of a surprise!

The newly-arrived Tata Bolt range of passenger cars is going to inject a healthy dose of brand perception-change in this country because of its muchimproved European styling, quality finish, ride quality and cabin comforts which the brand has lacked to date. The new Bolt is available in hatchback and sedan and a choice of two specification levels, XMS and XT, with only N$10,000 separating the two, because many features are standard across the range. This is the first important step in the Indian manufacturer's strategy of launching new passenger vehicles and it slots into the most competitive subN$160,000 slot in the local market. Competition in this segment is particularly tough with representatives from most strong brands pushing for market dominance.

Text Henrie Geyser Images Tata Motors South Africa

Tata still has the weight of so-so quality to carry but now, for the first time, is has stronger cards to play than just affordability. Although it has only sold just over 60,000 vehicles since coming to South Africa 11 years ago it has big plans for the future, inter alia, a campaign to create wider local awareness for the brand and also to improve the quality of its aftersales service. Key factors favouring the Bolt’s success include its competitive pricing, a choice of four models, an impressive list of standard equipment (in particular the infotainment) and ride quality, all of which moves it closer to price-similar competitors from Europe, Korea and Japan. I drove both versions at the media launch, and of the two, I prefer the hatch, which most Namibians and South Africans will probably go for as well.

Styling is easy on the eye, except for the small wheels (only 14inch on the lower model) which are further emphasised by a high-ride body. Make-up includes the bodycoloured side mirrors and door handles, LED indicating lights, high-mounted brake lights, shapely rear light clusters and a spoiler which adds a touch of sportiness; this should appeal to younger buyers. The quality of the cabin is a marked improvement on Tata cars of the past, although there still is a scattering of clack-clack plastic trim around. The spacious black interior of the Bolt seats up to five adults, with claimed class-leading legroom for the rear occupants. Maximum luggage capacity is quoted at 210 litres for the hatch and 360 litres for the sedan.

Layout and treatment of the Bolt’s instrument panel have upmarket touches, no doubt thanks to the influence of the Jaguar and Land Rover style division in Coventry.

The Bolt feels stable on the trot. It is steady and easy to drive, even on our neglected roads, and predictable through the twisties, even when it’s being hustled along.

Air-con is standard, as are power windows and mirrors, adjustable headrests, central locking as well as remote fuel and tailgate opening.

Some of my fellow motoring scribes felt the engine was a touch lethargic but to me the 1.2-litre turbocharged engine's 66kW and 140Nm provide enough gallop, although this impression might change with four occupants and a full load of luggage aboard.

The star of the living quarters is the Hamman infotainment system (including a touchscreen on the XT) USB/iPOD connectivity, speed dependent volume, multi-function steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity and more. The ride quality and the good cabin insulation add to the pleasure of the Bolt's ride. The electronically assisted and speed sensitive steering is noticeably sharper than on previous TATA cars.

The five-speed manual gearbox transmits its power to the front wheels and it is a good partner to the engine, even though the highest cog is designed more for frugal fuel consumption than keeping up a rapid pace. There are also three different settings for engine response, Sport, Eco and City modes with Sport as the default setting.

Rich comfort features include climate control on the XT (aircon on the XMX), electric windows (front and rear), electrically-adjustable exterior rear view mirrors and remote openers for the fuel flap and luggage compartment. Safety features impressively include ABS with electronic brake distribution (EBD) and a corner-braking feature as well as two airbags, automatic door locking and daytime running lights. Vehicle security include an alarm and an immobiliser; as well as remote central locking. All models include a five-year / 100,000km warranty, a twoyear / 30,000km service plan as well as five years of roadside assistance. the NamWheels Welcome to one of NamWheels' more regular features - our list of top 5 car-related items.

top5 ABS

Ever wondered what all those fun, colourful lights on your dashboard mean? While we couldn’t explain all of them, here is our top 5 list of helpful driver aids. You know, the magic pixie stuff that makes your car behave when you may or may not have over-driven it. We’ve also included descriptions of how this magic actually works so that you won’t get a fright when the brake pedal aggressively massages you during an emergency stop... Feel free to send us comments or feedback: info@namwheels.com

DRIVER AIDS

A.B.S. Anti-lock Braking System

We firmly believe A.B.S. is one of the most important driver aids which has helped to prevent many accidents. Often mistakenly thought to reduce braking distances (which it does, to some extent) its

chief benefit is actually a degree of control under full braking. Where normal brakes lock up and prevent steering, the pulsating ABS system lends a little control to panicking drivers and their reflex actions.

E.S.P. Electronic Stability Program

A continuation of A.B.S., this system uses clever computers and sensors to detect what a driver’s intentions are and if the car is still obeying them. In plain English that means it can detect if a car is skidding or out of control

and take corrective actions by braking one or more wheels of the car. That does not mean it can save every mishap - E.S.P. only functions up to certain speeds and in some situations. If you’re too fast or reckless, it can’t help you!

(E.) T.C. (Electronic) Traction Control

Traction Control has many other names: T.C., E.S.C., A.S.R, etc. Think of it as a reverse A.B.S. system where sensors detect if the driven wheels are slipping (spinning faster than the given road speed) and use short brake bursts

to regain grip. Not only can Traction Control save your tyres, it becomes especially useful in slippery conditions. Namibians don’t have to trouble themselves with it but E.T.C. is a huge help on icy or snowy roads!

Parking Sensors

You don’t know what you have until it’s gone. We certainly believe in this saying because most of the press cars we drive have park beepers. If we suddenly drive a car that doesn’t have these, parking becomes a little

harder and slower. Because we do not want to dent someone else’s ride. We’ve also noted that most parking sensors can be overly sensitive but this is just a matter of getting used their response (i.e. in your own car).

Blind-Spot Assist

At first we thought this was just another stupid nanny device which beeps at things we already spotted. Until that one night we changed lanes and almost grazed a big white BMW. Thank you, Blind Spot Assist.

The system has been constantly developed and one evolution now offers warnings when pulling out of a tight parking bay - it will warn of any approaching vehicle or person. That is incredibly helpful!

NOT COOL

P

Which driver aids are more bothersome than helpful? Everyone at NamWheels agreed that the following systems are (usually) just a nuisance: • • • • • •

Voice Control High Beam Assist Gear Shift Indicators Infra-red Night Vision Automatic Parking Brake Radar-guided Cruise Control

DISCLAIMER

We can’t stress enough that these systems are

FOLLOW-UP

not fool-proof! Please don’t rely on any of these to save or counter your reckless driving - in fact, rather invest in an advanced driving course.

SPAR Beach Clean-Up

14 December 2015 - 1 January 2016 In a previous edition, we told you about an amazing local initiative to clean up beaches around the Henties Bay area. NamWheels recently chatted to the main man behind the clean-up and he shared the following with us: We started just after 9AM on the morning of 15 December at the Henties’ municipality offices with the town area, North and South dune. The rest of the +/- 120km beach area was covered during the following two weeks. The last day of the clean-up started on 1 January 2016 at 07h15 in the morning; after the new year’s celebrations in the Omaruru river. We ran around like ants collecting the many “casualties” of the previous night’s parties... and yip, some party animals were still going strong!

In total about 2,570kg was picked up this year. It’s less than last year (by about 500kg) and as one of my guys said: ”Eke dink die mense, hy kom nou reg”.

“...about 2,570kg was picked up this year.” Yet again, a special thanks goes to the MD of Powerbat / SWANIB Cable, Johan Le Roux, as well as Anna-Marie, the B2B manager at VIVO Energy (SHELL), for their personal involvement with the clean-up. Without you guys I would still be on the beach… and also to “Ouma en Oupa” for their support - thank you very much! The biggest THANK YOU goes to our sponsors for making this possible and such a big success, without you this would not be possible:

*Nedbank Namibia *Spar Namibia *Vivo Energy Namibia (Shell) * Powerbat/Swanib Cable * LR Parts Whk/Swk * Super Tyres * Namibian Breweries – Vigo/Draught * Cadbury Chocolates * Tuffy Plastic Bags * 1FM Radio * Vita Juice * NamWheels * Hentiesbaai Spar * Lions Club Hentiesbaai I’d also like to give a special thanks to the public for your support on the beach during the clean-up days. Your words of appreciation to the guys walking long distances in the hot sun - that is why we do this, to create a better Namibia for all and make it the cleanest country in Africa. See you again in December 2016!

Audi Toyota

LAUNCH REPORT

@NAMWHEELS

Hilux

Pluspunt.

Audi Hyundai LAUNCH REPORT

H name, Old new car - we attended the launch of the new Hyundai Tucson.

Sometimes you’re allowed to change your mind more than once. In the case of Hyundai, who has been gradually upping the quality and designs of their products, it’s most certainly permitted. Their first (local) compact SUV was the Tucson, followed by the ix35 which has been replaced by this… Tucson. That’s right, Hyundai’s compact SUV is in its third generation and for reasons which don’t really matter, it went back to its original name. Tucson first appeared in 2005 and sold 22,716 units in five years, followed by about 33,700 ix35’s sold until early this year; that makes up a total of 56,408 unit sales and regular market segment dominance. The competition hasn’t been asleep though which meant that

ix35 slipped from first position in 2014 to third spot in 2015 – behind the newer Toyota RAV4 and Ford Kuga. Nissan’s fresher X-Trail is also in hot pursuit so it was high time for Hyundai to give its G2 (Medium-size SUV) contender a boost. Besides a new old name, Tucson shines with “Fluidic Sculpture version 2.0 Design” in its bold and striking lines. Projection headlights, LED daytime lights and two-tone bumper trim with shiny skid plates make up the Tucson’s new look. Depending on the model and options you’ve chosen, it rides on newly-designed 17, 18 or 19-inch alloys. Inside the cabin you will find all modern conveniences like climate control, cruise control, chilled glove box, reclining rear

seats, start button and multifunction steering wheel. An optional DVD/multimedia infotainment system with 3D navigation, reverse camera and smartphone interface can be fitted at dealer level for around N$15,000. Other novelties include door handle and puddle lights, rear cross traffic alert (when pulling out of confined parking spaces), lane change assist and blind spot detection. The updated vehicle stability control provides crucial driver aids like hill start assist, as well as advanced traction control and ABS with corner torque vectoring. All new Tucson also feature six airbags, clever seatbelts and ISOFIX anchors to achieve the coveted five stars in a recent EuroNCAP crash test.

Traction is provided by a frontwheel-drive-biased all-wheeldrive system which can send up to 50% of power to the rear wheels. New Tucson has also received significant ride improvements when compared to its popular ix35 predecessor. Most notably, this includes the feedback from customers and deals with notable areas of the previous model - such as the revised suspension setup with extra strengthening and softer damping for better ride quality.

1.6 turbo-petrol four cylinder motor nicked from Hyundai’s own Veloster. In this application, the directinjection turbo-charged petrol motor produces up to 130kW of power at 5,500rpm or a handy 265Nm of torque between just 1,500 and 4,500rpm. Transmissions include a sixspeed manual or automatic shifter as well as Hyundai’s new seven-speed DCT; a dual-clutch automated manual gearbox.

That also goes for ball joints and various steering components to give Tucson a sharper and more controllable feel.

An even bigger innovation is the manufacturer’s new 7-year or 150,000km warranty which applies to all new Hyundais with very few limitations for certain components.

At present, customers may choose between two power units: the 2-litre four cylinder petrol engine (115kW/196Nm) carried over from ix35 or a new

Depending on engine choice, Tucson is either built in Korea or the Czech Republic and this influences the choice of paint colours (seven vs. eight).

Prices range from N$369,900 for a 2.0 Premium Manual (add N$20,000 for Auto), N$453,900 for 2.0 Elite Auto, N$433,900 for the 1.6 TGDI Executive and N$518,900 for a range-topping 1.6 TGDI Elite DCT. The old Hyundai virtue of value for money may have gone but it has been replaced by modern design and high specification levels. At the Tucson’s recent launch, comparative charts revealed that the Korean manufacturer is certainly competitive in the marketplace when looking at similarly-sized rivals and their standard features. Prices (March 2016): 2.0 Premium (M) N$369,900 2.0 Premium (A/T) N$389,900 2.0 Elite (A/T) N$453,900 1.6 TGDI Executive N$433,900 1.6 TGDI Elite (DCT) N$518,900

LAUNCH REPORT

A4

H Audi’s A4 needed to catch up to its competitors - which it has.

2016 appears to be a big year for motor manufacturers. Toyota recently launched the successor to its legendary Hilux bakkie, Hyundai has brought back the Tucson name with its new SUV while Honda unleashed its beastly Civic Type R on our poor, unsuspecting roads. Although they couldn’t be any more different, Audi has now countered with the launch of their brand-new A4. There’s no doubt that this new B9 model is hugely important, especially when Audi execs at its recent launch underline this with sobering statistics. The brand recorded a global 3.6% year-on-year growth but their comparatively old A4 lost 18.6% to its competitors on the southern African market (at 14,953 units). South Africans (and Namibians) love their compact luxury sedans so this B-segment enjoys a 70%

sedan occupation where the A4, 3-Series and C-Class have been battling it out for decades. The segment makes up almost half of the (overall) luxury market which is currently experiencing a steady annual decline. Nonetheless, Audi is confident in its new product and has premium plans which focus less on bulk / fleet sales and emphasize quality service on individual levels.

Text Hanjo Stier Images Audi South Africa

The drive trains are up to 25% more powerful and 21% more efficient, there’s a wide range of infotainment systems and driver aids available while a lot of time was spent on aeroacoustics – how quietly it drives. In this regard it had a superb starting point by being closely related to cousin Passat from VW. Audi threw words like “sporty”, “functional” and “understated” into the launch presentation, all of which are absolutely true.

All new A4’s are built in Germany and will be followed in the next year by a new Q5 (SUV), A5 Coupé, A5 Cabriolet and A5 Sportback.

I would also add “spacious” as it’s 16mm wider and 25mm longer than before.

To trace its history, the compact Audi premium sedan sold over 12 million times since the Audi 80 arrived in 1972.

“Comfortable and solid” certainly wouldn’t go amiss either as this seems to be the hallmark of the MQB platform.

A4 made its debut in Southern Africa around 1994 and racked up 110,000 sales. This new model may look surprisingly like the preceding version but is actually made of 90% new parts.

The easiest way to spot a new A4 on the road is by its door mirrors, which are actually planted on the doors. You could also employ a scale to find differences of up to 120kg.

Most notably though, all fresh A4’s have slightly different front and rear light clusters where Xenon headlights are standard on all models; and Matrix LED’s are an option. The A4’s interior leans on the design of the Q7’s with its stubby gear lever doubling as a wrist rest for MMI infotainment controls; all models feature Bluetooth. Occupants can expect a 24mm increase in head room, 11 and 23mm more leg room (front, back) and a 480L boot to stow their luggage. You also get the choice between three models lines – Standard, Design and Sport – with optional S-Line or Design packs. Audi also offers A4 customers the fabulous Virtual Cockpit (fully digital instrumentation) with 3D navigation and enhanced vehicle information but this requires the inclusion of their full-fat MMI system option.

Other optional goodies include Audi’s smartphone interface for iOS and Android devices, as well as Audi-developed 32-gigabyte removable Android tablets for the entertainment of anyone residing in the rear seats. There are many more options so check with your nearest Audi dealer for detailed specs, colour and trim combinations, extras and engine choices. At the moment you may opt for either a 110kW / 250Nm 1.4 TFSi or 140kW / 320Nm 2.0 TFSi (both turbo-petrol) with a 185kW / 370Nm 2.0 TFSi expected soon and a 140kW / 400Nm 2-litre turbo-diesel arriving in October. Avant station-wagons are not expected locally but an S4 arrives in 2017 and RS4 a year later. The launch route took us into the Karoo via mountain passes where this A4 showcased its solid and comfy ride with amazing frontwheel-drive agility in the corners.

Steering feedback isn’t pin-sharp but praiseworthy for a luxury sedan with a further drive select option to remedy this. All models were fitted with dualclutch automatics but the 1.4T can be had with a six-speed stick. While it may not develop heaps of power, my co-driver and I happily agreed to call its efforts “adequate” with superior fuel efficiency. Go for the 2-litre petrol or diesel model if you’re always in a big hurry. In summary, Audi has played it very safe with the looks of their latest A4 while improving almost every other feature. The Mercedes C-Class may get you more looks and BMW’s 3Series creates whiter knuckles but this car walks a sophisticated path for the marque with four rings; which is exactly what they wanted.

KB250

Isuzu L spruced up its KB range - we test the KB250 4x4 Double Cab.

Bakkies are hugely popular in this country, just like "utes" in Australia and "trucks" in Yankeeland, and Namibians have a vast choice of brands and models in 4x2 or 4x4, single or double cab guises to pick a load-carrying chariot of their choice.

Although our test vehicle was still relatively new, it already had scuff marks on the loading bay floor, sides and back of cabin as well as the load gates.

The steering is easy and the visibility is good. Braking is sharp and the clutch action is gentle. All-round visibility in this bakkie is excellent while modern communication and entertaining goodies include MP3, USB, Aux and Cell-phone connection.

Opel

SPRINT REVIEW

What you need to know: The Opel Adam is a modern, stylish and compact city car in the mould of Audi’s A1 and the desirable Mini. Arriving rather late to this party of trendy runabouts, Opel even named it after its founding father and gave it plenty of style and proper technology to stand a fighting chance. Buyers in southern Africa do not get as much choice as those overseas but local specifications and prices are reasonable; and reasonably competitive. To offer buyers even more choice, Opel has launched some special models which include this limited-edition

Jaguar

Adam Rocks

“Adam Rocks” as well as the freshest release, “Adam S”. Some more facts: Opel’s Adam Rocks is limited to 150 models in S.A. so you best be quick about buying one. We also hope that this Sprint Review helps buyers in the (currently booming) second hand market. Ace number one for this little rascal – its exclusivity means that you won’t spot one on every street corner. Billed as a quasi-softroader, Rocks rocks up with beefier wheels and hardened black plastic cladding around its extremities and wheel arches – much like you would find on a Volvo Cross Country or Subaru XV.

Ace number two? It retains the Adam’s diverse colour and trim palette which we suggest making full use of.

SPRINT REVIEW

be durable and the gearbox on this test unit was also a pleasure to operate.

Where we drove: To the airport, a few highways and byways, small town traffic and a busy city centre.

If you’re buying a secondhand Rocks, best inspect its underside and suspension for signs of ill-placed off-road use.

It was in the last application where Adam Rocks pulled out a few more good cards with its easy controls, nippy performance and handling.

Why you’ll want one: The easy drive and compact size of an Adam with that small injection of active lifestyle looks at N$286,000.

One of our drivers moved from a workhorse bakkie to this and almost crashed it.

Opel calls it “the smallest and coolest crossover” - which we won’t argue with. Don’t buy this car as a farm vehicle but consider it for irregular use on good dirt roads.

Watch out for: Not much, actually. We believe that Opel’s 1-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine (85kW/170Nm) is proving to

Just keep in mind that it doesn’t have a spare wheel.

XE 2.0d

What you need to know: The XE is Jaguar’s latest attempt to stir up that German pot of 3Series, A4 and C-Class. With new technology and Jaguar’s stunning design, XE should stand a better chance than its predecessor. If it weren’t for that annoying exchange rate… Prices are hardly competitive but in this second test of an XE we came away impressed yet again. It’s as stylish and feels as special as a Jaguar should. Space isn’t that great at the rear (ditto for the rivals) but comfort and luxury are top class. Even this R-Sport model has a reasonably pliant ride. Some facts: Choose between three engines, a 2-litre turbopetrol (177kW) or this turbodiesel (132kW) and a 250kW 3-litre supercharged petrol V6. Depending on model, Jaguar offers you a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic gearbox and up to five design and trim lines.

This XE 20d R-Sport model costs about N$730,000 with a full maintenance plan. The auto’box is included, as are sporty add-ons, split rear seats, climate control, Marie Biscuit spare wheel, rain sensor, (front) power seats, start/stop system, keyless start and fancy touch-screen infotainment system with Bluetooth. Where we went: To be honest, not very far. This test car arrived in a flurry of other cars, flights and visitors, so we barely clocked up triple digit mileage in the process. At least we subjected it to city commuting and a bit of highway driving; which it absolved with absolute ease and relative comfort. The engine is a bit noisy on idle and at full chat, the lower and harder Sport kit begs caution over speed bumps but other than that, this XE glides along serenely.

Performance testing yielded 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds, incredible brakes and lenient ESP which even allowed the odd tail wag. Watch out for: Besides the initial purchase price and depreciation, dealer count is rather poor. We only picked fights with the Jaguar voice command and found the rear visibility poor; make sure you specify the optional reversing camera. As per usual, we did not achieve the claimed fuel consumption (5.1L/100km) but 7-8 should be possible. Why you’ll want one: The swivelling heads of strangers, those smudge marks on the driver window and occasional chit-chats with fellow Jaguar owners. That’s because this car is quite rare without looking silly or overly ostentatious – quite the opposite, it radiates beauty and sophistication.

SAFETY FEATURE

@NAMWHEELS

BREAKDOWNS

BEFORE: Preventing a breakdown

Maintenance Make sure your vehicle is maintained properly by having it serviced regularly, paying close attention to the cooling and electrical systems as these are prone to failure with age. Usual suspects that may perish include hoses, plugs, pumps, belts, wires, the battery or starter.

Pre-drive check Before setting off, check that your car starts and runs as it should. Any difficulties or irregularities may spell an imminent breakdown. Make sure your mobile phone is charged in case you need to call for help. Don’t forget to test all the lights on your car and also check the tyres!

DURING: Dealing with a breakdown

Safety Few drivers knowingly head for a breakdown so your car may stop in an unsafe area. Park or push it out of traffic as soon as you can; when it is safe to do so. If the area looks unsafe, stay in your vehicle and call for help with your mobile phone!

Safe zone Your vehicle should have a warning triangle (as in the picture) which you must set up a few metres behind your car. If you are stopped in fast traffic, a concealed area or the dark, double the distance!

EQUIPMENT: Carry these in your car A few litres of water, tow rope, gloves, torch, high-visibility clothing.

Flush for cash? We tell you which big Mercedes coupé to buy.

SPEC SHEET

No sooner had the ink dried on my S65 and S63 AMG Coupé reviews and someone pitched up at my house with this S500 Coupé. Now; I’m not the sportiest person on the planet but I believe that getting three in a row – especially three of a kind – is called a hat trick or something. Never mind that I tested all three Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupés in reverse order; from most to least powerful. Never mind indeed because it confirmed something that I had been suspecting for some time. The cheapest, pardon, most affordable model is actually the best to drive and hence it receives my full recommendation. I’m sure that at this level of investment (two to three million) nobody walks into the showroom and strokes their chin while eyeing all three models. Good luck finding such a showroom, by the way.

They don’t turn their pockets inside out and look under the sofa cushions to reach for a more powerful model. No, buyers in this segment can afford all three cars (and then some) so they’ll have unique reasons for choosing a certain version. Allow me to identify these. You will order the S65 AMG Coupé because it’s the most powerful and expensive one. Perhaps you even enjoy the V12's tug-boaty soundtrack and unholy power outputs (463kW/1,000Nm). There’s no shame in buying the less powerful S63 AMG because I found its power deficit (of 33kW or 100Nm) a bit easier to launch and the thundering V8 feels just as fast in traffic. This S500 model has even less grunt but in the greater scheme of motorised things, its 335kW (or 456hp) and 700Nm are still sufficient to pitch it jolly close to supercar territory.

And after driving the mental S65 or bonkers S63, I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that an S500 Coupé feels the most controllable and civilized. It isn’t even that far removed in terms of specifications, as it shares many a wondrous gadget with the other two. AMG look? No problem, just order the body kit. This pearl-white "Edition 1" press car had exactly that, contrasted beautifully by a bright red and black leather interior. Don’t worry; there are plenty of colour and trim options you may pick for all three Ess Coupés. They also feature self-guided and dual-vented everything with few space-age optional extras left to tick. Should you be a fan of racing and track driving, don’t buy any of these giants and go straight for a Mercedes-AMG GT or GT S.

For occasional drag racing, some tree stump removal and Autobahn shenanigans, the two AMG’s will be your best bet. Normal people, who just want to cruise in opulence with more power reserves than you can shake a tree stump at, buy this S500. Hand on heart, at no point during my weekly routine did I drop my shoulders and think “come on…” There are some noticeable but brief thinking pauses in the slowest drive / gearbox modes when going from slow coasting to half or full throttle but all this can be fixed by selecting a sharper mode or taking manual control of the gears. I took a lot of manual control of the gears. A 500 coupé likes to burble around town at 900rpm (no jokes!) and because I’m a bit obsessed with engine noises, I quickly discovered that this

turbocharged vee eight has thee most chilling induction howl in its mid-range; from about 2,500 rpm onwards. Not like a small-block burble, more akin to the coyote howl of a Maserati or Rover V8. You don’t even need to floor the far right pedal to achieve these wailing sounds, nor are they intrusive or annoying. In fact, leave the car in auto mode and it doesn’t emit as much as a faint rumble while changing up at no more than 1,600rpm. And the slightest prod of throttle calls upon huge amounts of torque; at any speed. Pair all that to the intelligent suspension and the multiple driver aids to create a rather amazing cruise ship. Depending on model and options, it can lean into corners like a motorbike, flatten out speed bumps or potholes, follow traffic all on its own, steer itself and brew a delicious cup of espresso.

OK, that last one’s a lie. Still, this 500 looks identical to the other S- Coupés and I noticed that it got the same amount of attention as its AMG sisters. All four side windows can be dropped simultaneously for that pillar-less look, the big active massage seats are also identical to the AMG’s, as is their instrument and infotainment system with twin monitors, plus this car’s higher-profile tyres gave it slightly better ride comfort. If it sounds like I’m slating the AMG’s, I apologise. They are phenomenally exciting and uniquely scary in their own ways. Still. If I somehow had ninety eleven million bucks, I would happily order a new S500 (N$2,089,000) and use the N$639,000 or N$1,262,000 saving over an S65 or S63 AMG to turn unleaded into spine-tingling V8 howls.

Safari Rally
