HONDA reaches 100 million milestone

HINO continues to lead MAZDA perfume wins in customer satisfaction Design Award

MERCEDES-BENZ G’s break 20,000 mark

TOYOTA Prius racks up more awards

KIA Niro sets a new fuel use record

VOLVO breaks sales records again in 2016

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. recently announced that it reached the 100 million-unit milestone in automobile production. Honda began the automobile production in 1963 with their T360 mini-truck and the S500 sports car. A year later Honda constructed the first Honda plant dedicated to automobile production in Sayama City, Saitama Prefecture. The new plant began production of a further model, the iconic S600 roadster.

Hino South Africa, driven by their very successful, global Total Support programme, recently managed to retain top spot in the combined Scott Byers Competitive Customer Satisfaction Monitor for the eighth successive quarter. This benchmark survey has been conducted quarterly since 1986 by Scott Byers, which has more than 33,500 trucks and fleet operators on its database, which is updated continually.

The 20,000th Mercedes-Benz G-Class which left the Magna Steyr production line in Graz, Austria late last year was a white Mercedes-AMG G63. It’s the first time this has been achieved in one year. The G63 has various "designo manufaktur" features, for example manually applied "designo mystic white bright" paintwork and an interior featuring designo leather manufactured in the in-house sewing.

The Toyota Prius has been named the Best Family Car in the UK Car of the Year Awards 2017, proof that the world's most successful hybrid has evolved into a car that ranks as Britain's best all-rounder. The panel of independent judges, numbering some of Britain's most experienced motoring journalists, had wide-ranging praise for the multi-award-winning fourthgeneration Prius, which was launched last year.

Arriving at New York City Hall in downtown Manhattan, the new 2017 KIA Niro officially received a Guinness World Record® title for the lowest fuel consumption driving across the USA from coast to coast (hybrid car). The new record-setting mark is an incredible 76.6 mpg (3,07-litres/100km). The vehicle was not altered in any way for the attempt but is not for sale in Namibia or southern Africa.

Volvo Cars reported a third consecutive year of record sales for 2016, up 6.2 per cent to 534,332 cars. The record-breaking year was driven by growth in all the major regions, including double-digit increases in its two largest markets (China and the United States) and a very strong performance in Western Europe. Volvo is confident that 2017 will be another record year for sales.

"SOUL of MOTION" is a goldwinning perfume developed by fragrance and cosmetics maker Shiseido to symbolise Mazda's KODO - the Soul of Motion design philosophy. This new fragrance won a gold award in the packaging category at the recent iF Design Award 2017 for its design which ”captures the tension when muscle primes for action” and also gained the fragrance international recognition.

NISSAN celebrates with electric café LEXUS updates their IS range Lexus South Africa recently updated their IS line-up with the IS 200t and its two-litre turbo motor, as well as the IS 350 F SPORT utilising the revered 3.5-litre quad cam V6. There's an option of an E or EX grade for the 200t. The big news though is that these 2017 models receive a more aggressive exterior as well as an up-scaled interior with a newly updated infotainment system.

The upgrades also include a more imposing rendition of the Lexus spindle grille with new LED headlights which are standard fitment across the range. The rear gets pronounced LED taillights and all-new rectangular-styled chrome exhaust tips with a revised rear bumper. New wheel designs as well as new colour choices (inside and outside) complete the IS updates.

Nissan recently announced that LEAF owners worldwide have achieved a staggering milestone, having collectively driven an astonishing three billion kilometers. The carmaker celebrated the announcement by launching their new digital platform, Electrify The World, and by opening a pay with energy pop-up café in Paris, France. The café offers customers the opportunity to use cuttingedge technology to produce their own energy. They can then use this energy as a currency to pay for goods and services, allowing them to experience the full electric lifestyle for themselves.

OPEL Astra wins S.A. Car of the Year title

FORD issues recall for Fiesta ST

The new Opel Astra is the Wesbank South African Guild of Motoring Journalists' 2017 Car of the Year, making South Africa the thirteenth country where the Opel Astra has been recognised as a Car of the Year since its global introduction in 2015. The latest accolade comes on the back of a multitude of awards both here and abroad for the 11th-generation Astra. The most significant of these is the European Car of the Year for 2016, widely considered the most prestigious prize in the world of motoring. It also picked up the 2015 SAFETYBEST Award and the 2015 Golden Steering Wheel.

Ford South Africa announced an expanded safety recall to include the 1.6-litre engine in the Ford Fiesta ST. In the affected vehicles, a lack of coolant circulation could cause an engine to overheat, resulting in a crack in the cylinder head. This process can result in a pressurized oil leak and, if it comes into contact with a hot engine, there is a risk of fire. "The safety of our customers is our top priority, and the expansion of the safety recall is a precautionary measure on the Fiesta ST," said Jeff Nemeth, President and CEO of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

This is the fourth win for the German manufacturer in the South African Car of the Year competition. Facing tough competition in this year’s 10-vehicle strong line-up – vehicles which all represent the best of the best from a wide cross-section of segments and price points – the popular Opel Astra is a worthy contestant, ultimately taking South Africa’s most prestigious motoring prize. Car buying patterns of the southern African public are changing and Astra reflects those changes in terms of offering both value for money as well as new and innovative technology.

Now it has received a fresh appearance with a few new body panels and wheels. First launched here in 2014, Grand i10 has been a solid seller, presenting a perfect fit - in terms of size and price between the entry-level i10

February this year marked exactly 10 years since the Nissan Qashqai first went on sale, and the Japanese brand celebrated in style with customer events and media activities all across Europe. Nissan was first to reach the 10-year milestone for one simple reason – a decade ago, there was no vehicle which s u c c e s s f u l ly m i xe d t h e practicality and desirability of an SUV with the size, efficiency and performance of a compact hatchback.

With its V12 engine, portal axles, electric fabric top and exclusive rear compartment, this very special all-terrain vehicle, which is limited to 99 units, meets the expectations of customers who demand the very highest standards. As it is only manufactured in left-hand-drive, it will not be introduced to the Southern African market.

BMW recalls thousands of cars TATA BOLT does well in NCAP crash test VOLKSWAGEN up! gets an up!date The Tata Bolt sedan, which was introduced to the local market in 2015, has earned a four-star safety rating from Global NCAP. This model is fitted with two front airbags and has ABS brakes as part of its standard equipment. David Ward, the SecretaryGeneral of the Global NCAP said: "It is encouraging to see a major Indian brand like

Tata improving the safety of their models." The affordable new Bolt, in both sedan and hatchback guise, has a well-appointed cabin with an impressive list of standard equipment that make these newcomers from India strong contenders in a category which is dominated by other makes from Europe, Korea and Japan.

Volkswagen's compact car, the up! is now more colourful with sharper lines, sporty design and extra standard features. The new up! arrives in South Africa with new colours and wheels, new interior design and new comfort features. With over 4,800 units sold in South Africa since its market introduction in 2015, the new

up! will continue the success story of Volkswagen's rising star. A myriad of changes catch the eye when you see the new up! for the first time. The newly designed headlights feature LED daytime running lights, while a modified bumper with redesigned front trim strips and a more contoured bonnet give it a sharper, sportier look.

BMW recalled thousands of vehicles due to possibly faulty airbags, including their new 7 Series for a potential fault in the SRS control unit. Following other makes, BMW recalled about 840,000 cars in the U.S.A. from the 20072015 model years to replace their Takata airbag inflators. Other issues befell the X3 and X4 ISOFIX child seats, as well as the front driveshafts in the X5 and X6 resulting in over 200,000 U.S. recalls.

ISUZU KB is tough-as-nails Some things you just can't kill - which certainly includes the Isuzu KB bakkie. Proof of this can be found on South Africa’s West Coast in the hamlet of Vanrynsdorp, where the diesel mechanic Danië l Kotze lives with his young brood and a fleet of old Isuzus: this entails three kids and seven of the tough-asnails KB's.

The newest is a 2008 KB250, with well over 400,000km. But the prized possession is a (slightly faded) metallic blue 1979 model, which came via his grandfather and father. It joined the family in 1983 and did over half-a-million kilometres with its original engine, much of that mileage as a hard-working 'plaas' bakkie, explains Danië l.

www.NAMWHEELS.com

the NamWheels Welcome to one of NamWheels' more regular features - our list of top 5 car-related items.

top5

So we thought of doing something fun for this top5 list but the local motor industry isn’t exactly fun at the moment; quite the opposite. With that in mind we came up with a slightly more serious list - things we consider vital when purchasing a vehicle. Tough times and lacking funds should not be a reason to stop dreaming about your next car. We hope that these tips will encourage you to go out there and find your dream car! Feel free to send us comments or feedback: info@namwheels.com

CAR BUYING TIPS

PRICE What can you afford?

Your dream car’s price comes first because it’s the most obvious hurdle - can you actually afford the price? Even if you negotiate a better deal, it is NOT a good idea to buy any vehicle with all the money you can currently afford.

The car’s maintenance and repairs (see below) are extra costs, never mind insurance, fuel, tyres, and so on. Plus, you don’t want to cut back completely on other luxuries like dining out, entertainment, hobbies, gadgets, etc. Speaking of which...

LIFESTYLE What is the car used for?

Unless you just need something cheap to go from A to B (Aranos to Bethanie?), most modern cars have become an extension of their owner’s personality and their lifestyle. From humble and cheap to fast and flashy, everyone has different needs.

Make sure you look at all available options in the market and think about what you will use the car for. For example, a double-cab bakkie can do just about anything but won’t be as economical in town as a smaller hatchback.

UPKEEP Can you afford to run the car?

This is a very important point which often gets overlooked. Only a new car will drive without any maintenance for a while but eventually, even that will require a service, new tyres, a battery or new windscreen. Have you got the money for that?

By stretching you budget too far, these necessary items could be out of reach and eventually cause your car to break down or lose value faster. Purchase something more affordable and budget for repairs to always have peace of mind.

AGE New, demo or pre-owned?

This is very simple - new cars cost the most money and are progressively cheaper as they get older. While you may be tempted to buy an old car for little money, the amount of repairs and upkeep (see above) may be very high.

We at NamWheels advise that you shop around and also speak to workshops if you’re interested in an older car. As a safer alternative, why not buy a demo or used car from a reputable dealer?

CONDITION Do you have to spend more?

Last but certainly not least is the condition of that vehicle you’re eyeing. If it’s brand-new (or a demo unit) you don’t have to worry too much. Some used vehicles come with warranties or extra guarantees - be sure to study the terms of these.

If it’s an old/er car in your radar, be sure to inspect it carefully and go for an extensive test drive before handing over money. Better still, take the car to a reputable workshop or the brand’s dealership to have it checked out!

SCARY STUFF Be very wary of these when you are looking at a car: • Not in the owner’s name • Missing or no documents • Outstanding fines or license • Balloon or residual payments • Code 3, rebuilt or salvage title • Private loans or loan sharks • Rust, damp or bad repairs • Unlicensed or scrapped • Dodgy meeting areas

Kia

SPRINT REVIEW

Sportage 1.6T GT-Line

What you need to know: Kia's new Sportage is closely related to its Korean cousin, the Hyundai Tucson. Besides sharing a lot of technology, the relation is evident in both vehicle's stylish looks. Where a Tucson shows flowing lines, the Sportage was penned with more determined strokes of the pen. NamWheels doesn't like the bulging, Picanto-like nose but, as in most new cars, this aids pedestrian safety and crash test ratings. The rest of this Sportage version 2.0 is well proportioned with stylish details. Inside it's the same story, especially in this top-ofthe-range model featuring two-tone leather trim. More facts: At N$600,000-ish it has a shocking price tag but retaliates with many toys and safety devices. Bluetooth, LED lights, climate control, USB, cruise control, climatised front seats, heated rear furniture, wireless phone charging, keyless entry and a start button are just SOME of the standard features in this top model.

Helping to make the best out of the 1.6L turbo-petrol fourcylinder engine's 130kW and 265Nm are a seven-speed automatic gearbox, intelligent all-wheel drive (with AWD lock), three drive modes, full stability and traction control, some paddle shifters, a taut suspension and fat 19-inch wheels with superb levels of grip. Where we went: The typical destinations of any modern urban dweller but mixed with some unplanned medical appointments. If you don't watch your step of a late evening, you'll end up with weeks of doctor, chiro and physio visits. Happily, the Sportage is comfortable and capable. Except for one thing... Watch out for: That awful gearbox! In its default and “Eco” modes it was so jerky at low speeds that I broke a manrule and actually opened the owner's manual. Here I learnt that the twin-clutch unit can behave like an automated manual 'box at low speeds. Which it does – and thereby ruins an otherwise decent automobile.

DCT

READERS’

RIDES

At speed, the DCT ‘box is fine; although not as responsive as those of its more established counterparts. Downshifts are good, the up-shift commands can linger a little. Slow starts (especially uphill) mimic a slipping clutch and can result in warning lights. Red-lining the perky motor is impossible, the silly gearbox shifts up when IT wants to. Not exactly sporty but ok for a soft-roader. A positive note is that – on the move – this transmission is rather well matched to the engine's low and mid-range clout. Seven ratios means that it usually cruises at or below 2,000rpm; resulting in claimed average consumption of 6.5L/100km. We call B.S. - our mixed route average was closer to 10. Why you'll want one: Style, gadgets, relative rarity (at the moment) and an overall wellpolished product. If you do a lot of open-road driving, this DCT model is probably ok. But if you spend a lot of time in slow traffic, we advise a VERY elaborate test-drive before you sign on the dotted line!

Giulia

Audi Alfa Romeo

LAUNCH REPORT

Bellissima! F We drive Alfa's gorgeous new Giulia.

The passionate relationship (for Alfisti, at least) started 55 years ago when the original Giulia, the Tipo 105 Berlina, and its subsequent sub-types became the first Alfa model range to be built in South Africa in substantial numbers. From CKD kits assembled at CDA (Car Distributors and Assemblers) in East London production moved to Rosslyn where Super and TI models were built. Interestingly, after 1970 South Africa was the only country producing Giulia models in right-hand drive. It was also the birthplace of some rather interesting and exclusive Giulia derivatives, like the 1972 1600 Rallye – which was a more powerful 1600cc version of the 1300 Super with the 1300s singleheadlight body shell, and the 2000 Rallye, which had a 2000 Berlina engine fitted to a 1600 Super body.

But then, in 1978, production of the Alfa Romeo Type 105 was discontinued, and for nearly forty years the name Giulia disappeared… Its legacy was sustained (well, kind of) by the Type 116 Giulietta, the 75 (the last rear-wheel drive sedan from Milan for about 30 years), the 155, 156 and the 159. But then in 2015, as part one of Alfa Romeo's revival plan, the new, reinvented Giulia was unveiled in Arese Italy, to high acclaim. With its pseudoGermanic looks it may have lost some Italian sensuality and finesse, but it also has gained confidence and poise.

alloy wheels accentuate its purposeful stance and, coated in the signature Competizione Red, the QV Race Edition looks mean and menacing. Ultra-light materials abound. Carbon fibre is used for the bonnet, roof, front splitter, rear body inserts and the driveshaft, aluminium for the doors and wheel arches, and aluminium composite for the rear cross member – keeping weight down to1,524kg. Its overt sportiness is further reflected by real carbon fibre interior accents, front Sparco carbon fibre seat shells and sporty seats, stylish leather and alcantara upholstery.

Its power dome, strong waist lines and distinctive kink in the C-pillar is elegant and graceful, yet aggressive. And in top-line Quadrifoglio Verde its svelte and new attire is even more uncompromisingly assertive.

The well-designed dash is dominated by the integrated Connect Nav 3D system and all the Giulia’s main controls, including the red start button, are incorporated in the new steering wheel.

A distinctive front splitter and huge air intakes, rear body inserts, strategically placed air outlets and huge 19-inch

Two user-friendly knobs on the gearbox tunnel adjust the Alfa DNA Pro selector and the hi-tech infotainment system.

The sedan’s aura of exclusivity is completed by a plaque reading Race Edition number (here, 13 of 30) and a highquality Harman Kardon sound theatre system. In terms of Giulia’s interior refinement the QV matches the best its Teutonic rivals can offer (and even surpasses it with a decidedly more elegant infotainment screen solution), and underneath the skin Alfa returned to the original Giulia blueprint; mating a powerful engine with rear-wheel drive in a lightweight four-door body.

It also provides best-in-class emission levels (189 g/km CO2) due to an electronicallycontrolled cylinder disabling system and features massive carbon ceramic brake discs (which are exclusive to the Race Edition). A host of driver aids such as the Integrated Brake System (IBS), an active suspension, Torque Vectoring system and an Active Aero Splitter, are included in the package, plus the full complement of safety systems.

However, in the new QV model the hallowed light alloy twin overhead cam four-cylinder engines have been replaced by a highly advanced Ferrarideveloped full aluminium 2.9litre V6 BiTurbo petrol engine.

Everything inside the Giulia QV – from the position and fit of the leather and alcantara clad seat, the steering wheel (embossed with the new Alfa Romeo logo), the big gear paddles to the control knobs and the pedals – just feels right.

It delivers a whopping 375kW and a maximum twisting force of 600Nm, and coupled to an 8-speed auto gearbox, it's claimed top speed is 307km/h and acceleration time from 0 to 100km/h is 3.9 seconds.

Push the red button and the muted, urgent burble-gurgle from the twin-turbo V6 warns you of the motor’s suppressed potential. Turn the DNA Proselector past the “Dynamic”, “Natural” or its “Advanced”

Efficiency (a first on an Alfa Romeo) to Race mode. Hold on tight to the sporty steering wheel, and squash the car’s accelerator… With the Bi-turbo V6 engine bellowing – mimicking more Wagner than Verdi, more Beethoven than Puccini – the QV effortlessly sprints to over 200km/h, its trick Chassis Domain Control smoothly harnessing all the banshee forces. And this is what makes the new Giulia QV so exceptional. Even at its performance limits all inputs of the car seem so uncomplicated. You do not have to fidget with numerous settings to get it to perform, and you don't need to worry about what it might do next. It will tell you, instantly and timeously. The carbon brakes are deadly, its handling and body control is exemplary, and even in Dynamic mode the ride isn't harsh or unpleasant.

Alfa Romeo has put lots of time and effort into this car, and the result reflects this. I t's a proper super sedan, one that can confidently take on the best from M, AMG and RS… and it's a more than worthy successor to the original Alfa Romeo Giulia. But, at $1.4 million for the QV Launch Edition and about $1.6 million for the Race Edition, it isn't cheap. Its lesser 2-litre petrol turbo siblings with their 4-cylinder MultiAir engines (147kW at 5,000rpm and up to 330Nm of torque from 1,750rpm) are sold in Base (N$555,000), Super (N$625,000) and Stile Pack (N$695,000) trim levels. This is quite steep compared to similarly specced BMW 3Series, Merc C-Class and Audi A4 models, and will surely test the strength of the long relationship with Alfa Romeo and Giulia – as seemingly only suitors of considerable means need apply…

MAKE Mercedes-AMG MODEL SL63 ENGINE 5,461cc V8 Turbo-Petrol 430kW 400Nm DRIVETRAIN 9-speed Auto, RWD ABS, EBD, ESP PERFORMANCE 0-100km/h: 4.05 sec. 0-400m: 11.79 @ 204.43 Max km/h: 250* CONSUMPTION 10.1L/100km TANK / RANGE 75L / 740km BOOT SIZE 240 - 381L WARRANTY 2 years / unlimited km SERVICE PLAN 6 years / 100,000km TYRE SIZE Model dependent SPARE WHEEL No, Repair Kit PRICE Many, many Dollars

Thunderous Audi's sounds and wondrous power - this is the new SL63 AMG.

The name Mercedes-Benz always stood for luxurious automobiles and within the brand’s own pecking order, the letters “SL” tend to crown most price lists. Although slightly removed from the SL abbreviation (Sporty and Light), there are few cars on the market with an illustrious heritage like the Mercedes SL (see below). For those wanting even more – especially in terms of power – the in-house tuning division AMG is here to help. The SL 400 Biturbo V6 or SL 500 Biturbo V8 are sold with AMG looks as standard but if their power outputs were somehow not enough, there are two full-on MercedesAMG models on offer. Topping the charts is the monstrous SL 65 with over 600 horsepower from its Biturbo V12 engine; and a hefty price tag which almost encompasses an SL 400 AND SL 500.

The silver SL 63 I just had on test for a week seems more civilised by comparison and costs a “mere” two point five million bucks (April 2017). Let me assure you that it is far from civilised though; that became abundantly clear within the first few meters with this 5.5-litre Bi-Turbo V8. 430kW or 585hp are hard to disguise or keep quiet, even if Mercedes and AMG have done a sterling job of keeping the SL 63’s looks relatively discreet yet still purposeful within their brand design. This SL 63’s freshly-updated R231 basis is a pure twoseater (with small storage binnacles behind the seats) and the magic of a retractable roof in metal and glass; or optional dimmable glass. Heated seats provide relief for topless winter excursions while additional extras turn them into fully-climatised furniture.

Compared to newer Merc products, the SL dashboard features a comparatively small built-in infotainment screen as opposed to the bigger, free-standing devices in A- or C-Class. The gigantic twin monitors (with digital instruments) of E- and S-Class will surely make their way to the SL with the new model in a few years.

Except when it’s cold, then it keeps roaring away merrily for half a minute or until your neighbours know that you’re taking the AMG to work. Power goes to the SL’s rear wheels via a 7-speed MCT (dual clutch) AMG automatic gearbox which begs caution at parking speeds because it feels unresponsive and jerky. Like any other DCT, really.

You may paw your own way through the cogs with shift paddles and a Manual mode but – especially at full throttle – the gearbox does a good job itself. Except perhaps in the “Race Start” mode (a type of launch control) which generated too much wheel spin and hence, slower acceleration times during our multiple runs for performance tests.

Other than that, I had no critiques inside the stylish roadster. Its AMG seats are superbly comfortable and supportive with (optional) active side bolsters.

Once on the move, this ‘box is a real marvel of modern transmissions and perfectly ties into the car’s multiple drive modes.

Subtle AMG badges around the cabin join up with the embossed logo on the stubby gear selector to remind you that this is something rather special.

The default “Comfort” setting underlines the SL’s touring abilities, while “Sport” and “Sport Plus” progressively agitate the SL63's V8 engine, gearbox and air suspension.

In plain English that means it’s one of the fastest topless cars money can buy. So fast, that first gear is restricted and never delivers full power.

If you need a final reminder, just press the engine start button. The 63’s 5,461cc V8 wakes up with a short bark and soon settles into a dogfrightening low rumble.

Furthermore, there is a hardcore “Race” mode and an “Individual” setting which lets the driver choose the best combination of those aforementioned options.

If you’re lucky, second gear will unleash full potential briefly (amidst a squirming rear end) before third gear engages and you REALLY start accelerating.

Mercedes claims 0-100km/h in 4.1 seconds and our best was a decent 4.05 (without Race Start) while 400m came up in just 11.79 seconds at 204.43km/h.

The SL 63 AMG is brutally fast. Although it’s blessed with a stupendously broad power band and hardly has any turbo lag, its mid-range punch is of the unbelievable kind. Plant your right foot between 3,000 and 4,500rpm to get neck-snapping response and almighty acceleration. Kickdown at 120km/h and 160 arrives just 2.8 seconds later. All the while you will be subjected to the Bi-turbo V8’s thunder soundtrack... which goes from a deep grumbling murmur at lower speeds to loud machine-gun fire at full tilt. The beauty of this car is that you can switch to Comfort mode and cruise in peace and quiet. Every tester highly recommends the optional B&W sound system for this. The Vario Roof only operates at walking pace but it’s now got a fully automated boot protector.

*Manufacturer claims. Vehicle bravely provided by Mercedes-Benz S.A.

Roof up you get 381L of space; with the origami roof stowed about 240L. The petrol consumption is disastrous in town or when you are gunning it (I saw 29L/100km once) but it’s easy to achieve 12L/100km on a steady open-road cruise. The brakes are excellent, its LED headlights even more so, rear visibility is superb with the roof down and it even has a feature to lift its nose over speed bumps. Does that justify this SL’s 2.5 million dollar asking price? I certainly think so, not just for that mind-blowing power but just for the accomplished and exotic SL platform. Plus - you don’t see one every day... For those on a tighter budget, or who just want to cruise in style, the lesser 400 or 500 models should also do the job perfectly.

Mercedes SL Lineage

Thought we were kidding? The Stuttgart drop-top with “Sport Leicht” on its rump can trace its ancestry back further than most modern automobiles.

W198 1954 - 1963

W121 1955 - 1963

W113 1963 - 1971

R107 1972 - 1989

R129 1989 - 2002

R230 2003 - 2012

R231 2012 - present

Here’s where it all started. Made from Daimler’s 1950's race cars, the 300SL coupé with its tubular frame and “gull wing” doors quickly gave birth to the more affordable (but still jolly expensive) 300SL roadster. Prices for the coupé have long passed 1 million US$.

Born out of necessity for the booming market in a post-war era of prosperity, the “little SL” was only made as a 190SL and often falsely accused of being the “lady’s roadster”. What they lacked in speed, these SL’s made up for in grace, style and a good dose of reliability.

Eventually gaining the nickname “Pagoda” SL because of its concave, pagoda-like hard top roof, the W113 had big shoes to fill because it replaced both the legendary 300SL range and the smaller Type 190SL. It did so with understated style and good performance.

Early in the 1970's, the new SL range was unveiled to instant success and this model would go on to be one of the longest-produced Mercedes models of all time. The R107 “Bobby Ewing” SL (from the hit TV show Dallas) was built for an almost unprecedented 17 years.

Just in time for the modern 90's, the sleeker but more humble R129 series brought new technology and power with it. From ABS brakes, an automatic roll-over bar, electric soft top and fully integrated safety seats to new multi-valve engines and even a 6-litre V12!

At the start of the new millennium, Mercedes-Benz brought even more safety, luxury and innovation to the SL badge. The R230 boasted with advanced driver aids, refined drive trains and more luxury gadgets. This was the first SL with a folding metal roof.

The current range was updated (facelifted) a year ago but is a soft evolution from the previous model. Everything has been made more efficient, lighter and easier to use. The R231 is everything the modern SL should be - fast, comfortable, safe, efficient and stylish.

Butch Ford presence and new gadgets - we test the updated Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Right, so you live in Suburbia, have a couple of kids and lead an active lifestyle. Where before a “Kombi”, some station wagon or 4x4 double-cab may have done the trick, your next automotive purchase must tick all those boxes.

barely tested them. A bit of dirt road and a few soaked ditches were all we traversed while testing its 2 High, 4 High and 4 Low setting. This Chevy has the right ingredients that will surely help a skilled driver to get to their destination off-road.

Stand around any respectable Namibian braai and most attendees would strongly advise Toyota's recurrent Fortuner, but we at NamWheels would like to suggest the new Chevrolet Trailblazer...

The interior is a good blend of hardy utility and car-like finesse with many impressive gadgets and a few stylish features scattered around the cabin.

That's right, Chevy has a sizable and rugged seven-seater SUV with the choice of two beefy Turbo-Diesels, manual or automatic gearboxes, rear or four-wheel drive and various trim levels.

We awarded gold stars to the funky logos and chrome highlights, selectable rear air-con, touch-screen media/navigation unit, comprehensive trip computer and the horde of driver aids.

We tested the second-best 2.8D 4x4 LTZ (Automatic) model for a week, and this SUV was delivered to us in tasteful grey metallic with black leather.

Besides stability and traction controls, this butch beast offers you park beepers, reverse camera, lane departure warning, blind spot assist, collision warning and hill coasting or braking functions.

This Trailblazer – any Trailblazer – need not fear the competition when it comes to size and dimensions. It's a big boy (4.9m length, 1.84m height) with a towering driving position and rather commendable minimum ground clearance of 221mm. Chunky chrome details, fat 265/60R18 tyres and fresh light clusters complete a modern stature. The brawny 2.8L Duramax four-cylinder turbo-diesel develops up to 144kW or a colossal 500Nm in a rather noisy but otherwise impressive fashion. Its huge torque band peaks at 2,000rpm and the motor is usually kept in its happy place – the mid-range – by a stretchy, CVTlike, automatic gearbox. Full throttle is hardly necessary and the 2.8L never ventures beyond 3,500rpm because it doesn't have to. LTZ will even lay down rubber during spirited starts. Its steering and handling are sedate and spongy, well within tolerances of this vehicle class. A plus point is its rear coilsprung suspension. This also helps with the car's off-road abilities although I hasten to add that we

That's quite impressive for this utilitarian vehicle category, although some direct competitors offer similar goodies. At roughly N$625,000 the Trailblazer is well within the ballpark of chief rival pricing, trading a few grand for a gizmo here or kilowatt there. Unfortunately it is the thirstiest at a claimed 9.5L/100km and we struggled to get it below 11L/100km on our mixed driving routine. The 76L fuel tank is also not the largest of its segment. Another criticism hit the middle seating row position – which is too far forward because of the far rear seats. These are only suitable for small peeps and leave little room behind them: 205L and a small hidden compartment. Flatten them again to get 1,229L and fold the middle ones for up to 1,830L. Other than that, the sturdy Trailblazer with its many new features seamlessly integrated into our busy lifestyle and, barring a few narrow parking bays, never really worried us. It may be expensive but you get lots of metal for your money. Never mind space, brawn and gadgets.

Rumours speak of snoring from the back. Some road trippers noticed a slight hardness from the (optional) 18-inch wheels fitted here so it is probably a good idea to stick with the (standard) 17 inchers if you dislike tarmac travel. Claimed average Diesel use is 8.8L/100km from the 80L fuel tank; our overall trip average for the minigetaway confirmed this. Once all relatives had been evicted from the big boxy VW, I even did a 0-100km/h test… it managed a best time of 11.94 seconds. That's all good and well but has very little to do with the Kombi's core purpose - its ability to swallow an entire family and head into the countryside.
