NEWS & NEW MODELS MAZDA reports a steady sales growth Mazda has retained the sales momentum built over the preceding months with a NAAMSA reported total of 949 units at the end of July 2016. It was also a record month for the CX-5 which achieved the highest dealer sales in the medium SUV segment with 381 recorded for July 2016. Mazda grew January to July sales by 64% with 2016 Year to Date sales of 7,261 versus 4,694 units sold in 2015. This growth comes at a time where vehicle sales in South Africa are down by 17%, while passenger cars declined by 20% and total vehicle sales are down by 11% Year on Year.

VOLKSWAGEN factory tour vehicle birthday

KIA ranks best in J.D. Power results

Volkswagen's “FactoryTour” vehicle was three years old last month and has taken just short of 40,000 visitors into the Uitenhage Factory. The stylish 21-seater FactoryTour vehicle was custom built by Volkswagen employees using recycled and unused car parts. The novelty of their approach, using three cars, resulted in a comfortable, practical and stylish 21-seater vehicle.

Having transformed into an industry leader in design, quality and technology, KIA Motors reached historic new heights recently when J.D. Power recognised the brand as the highest scoring nameplate in its 2016 IQS (Initial Quality Study) out of all 33 makes in the U.S.A. Marking the first time in 27 years that a non-premium brand topped the rankings, KIA’s climb to the top was driven by segment-leading performances from the Soul and Sportage, while Cerato, Rio and Sorento all ranked in the top three places of their respective categories.

NISSAN launches 2017 model GT-R

TOYOTA remains top-selling brand

DATSUN GO goes on an epic road trip

CONTINENTAL’s new braking system

3,153 Hiluxes were sold in July, making it SA's favourite vehicle while eclipsing its nearest bakkie competitor by 840 sales. This helped lift Toyota's new vehicle sales to 10,224, or 3,410 deliveries clear of the second-placed manufacturer. This equates to an overall market share of 22,7%. As Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing points out, “what's more enlightening is that 23% of all dealer sales for the month can be attributed to a Toyota, Lexus or Hino, which means that every 4th vehicle sold, is one of ours."

The belief that city cars are merely urban runabouts was recently shattered by two Finnish adventurers. In 16 days they drove 9,800km across South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. Jarmo Kymenlathi and Vesa Eskola chose a Datsun GO for their epic road trip and the car emerged unscathed from a tough schedule of about 613km a day on the road.

Continental has commenced series production of its MK C1 Integrated Braking System (IBS) for the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia. The electronic brake system is more dynamic, lighter and compact than conventional brake systems. It also reduces pedal vibrations and has the same force / characteristics, providing greater control and comfort for the driver. With the MK C1, the brake actuation feature, the brake booster and control systems (ABS and ESC) are combined into a compact module that is up to four kg lighter than a conventional system.

Nissan recently announced the 2017 GT-R, which went on sale in July 2016 at Japanese Nissan dealers. The new GT-R features a fresh look both inside and out, as well as major performance enhancements and exciting new features. These updates represent the most significant changes made to the model since it was introduced in 2007.

Thousands of people across South Africa will benefit from community projects selected to receive grants from the Ford Motor Company Fund, as part of the Ford College Community Challenge (C3). C3 runs in collaboration with Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, and nonprofit organization Enactus to empower communities to become more sustainable, and thus improve working and living conditions. The winning proposals came from five of South Africa’s universities who each receive approximately ZAR 70,000 (about 5,000 US Dollars) per project as they set out to empower the disabled and elderly, also assisting with food security, job creation and economic development of the various impoverished communities.

Isuzu was named one of the top performing brands by customers in the latest Ipsos Quality Awards for sales and service experience in the LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) segment. The coveted Ipsos awards measure the vehicle owners' satisfaction when purchasing and servicing a vehicle. Isuzu scooped up two gold awards, one for Purchasing Experience (LCV) and one for Servicing Experience (LCV) and after achieving gold four years in a row, Isuzu earned the coveted platinum award for consistently achieving such excellence in the LCV Purchasing Experience.

Nelson Mandela famously said 'Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.' With this in mind, and to celebrate the recent Mandela Day, General Motors South Africa ploughed its efforts into education initiatives at the Adolph Schauder Primary School in Schauderville (S.A.). A beneficiary of GMSA's 2016 Adopt-a-School programme, the primary school was abuzz with 67 Minutes for Mandela activities. GMSA executives, employees and retirees unveiled new facilities whilst also serving soup and teaching Grade R's arts and crafts. The school now boasts a new library stocked with books donated by Oxford Books and GMSA employees, a vegetable garden cultivated by GMSA's retirees and the refurbished ablution facilities.

Ferrari Drop-top LAND ROVER OWNERS help Oude Rust Members of the Land Rover Owners Namibia gathered at the Oude Rust Old Age Home on 23 July to participate in a Fun Day with the residents. The aim of this event was to bring awareness to the plight of seniors and old age homes in Namibia, gather funds for the frail care medical short fall, as well as spending some quality time with the elders. Not only did the Land Rover Club collect N$ 30,000 from

member donations, it also handed necessity gift parcels with blankets, toiletries and refreshments to residents. A highlight for the old folks was an afternoon drive in Land Rovers (new and old) through a pre-planned route with mild off roading. Some seniors had so much fun, they commented that the route was too short and they would have loved to keep on going!

Ferrari has announced a new limited-edition special series LaFerrari which is aimed at clients and collectors who refuse to compromise on the joy of ‘al fresco’ driving even when they are at the wheel of a supercar. The new name and technical characteristics of the car will be announced at the Paris International Motor Show, as will the number of examples Ferrari will build. However, all available units have already been sold since a special preview to clients; after which the order books were closed.

TOYOTA Prius gets a refresh There are not many vehicles that can claim being "gamechangers" like Toyota’s Prius can. It was the first hybrid to be mass-produced when it was launched in Japan in 1997, thus making hybrid technology readily available to the car market. However, it was only with the launch of the second Prius generation (in 2005) that Southern Africa first tasted hybrid technology.

C 350 e plug-in hybrid made in S.A.

In keeping with the Prius name - which means "front runner" in Latin - the newgeneration marvel continues to build on its ‘green-car’ credentials and now comes with even more technical breakthroughs to reaffirm its status as the world's bestloved hybrid. In fact, Toyota had sold in excess of 3.5 million Prius hybrids before the launch of this fourthgeneration model.

Following its premiere in the S-Class, Mercedes-Benz now offers its advanced hybrid technology in the C-Class. The dynamism and efficiency of the C 350 e sedan makes it a convincing proposition in its segment. With a range of 31 kilometres in purely electric mode, it makes emission-free driving a local reality. A four-cylinder petrol engine together with a powerful electric motor, gives it a total

output of 205kW and 600Nm. The innovative C 350 e offers consumption figures of just 2.1L/100km and is equipped with air suspension (as standard) plus a Pre-Entry Climate Control system that can be controlled via the internet. The C 350 e with its latest plug-in hybrid technology is proudly manufactured in South Africa, a first for the East London plant.

EVOQUE milestone

TATA Evolve

OPEL GT awarded

The Range Rover Evoque reached a historic milestone recently as it celebrated its fifth year of production at JLR’s manufacturing facility near Liverpool, UK. With over half a million sold in more than 180 countries since 2011, the Evoque is Land Rover’s greatest sales success story. It is also Land Rover’s most efficient model, thanks to its British “Ingenium” engine which offers class-leading CO2 emissions and great fuel consumption.

Tata’s Evolve limited edition, which is based on the Xenon XT model, has found favour with many buyers looking for higher specification double cab pick-ups at a reasonable price, therefore an additional (limited) colour choice has been made available. At first only offered in white, Accordian Investments (Tata cars and light commercials marketer in South Africa), has listened to existing and potential customers by now adding this black as a limited exterior colour.

The Opel GT Concept, a star at this year's Geneva Motor Show, continues the brand's strong concept car tradition and embodies avant-garde design in a purist form. This idea has now also been recognized by the German Design Council, organizer of the renowned Automotive Brand Contest. The competition's top-notch jury chose the sports car of the future in the "Concepts" category for the "Best of Best" award.

AUDI presents its new R8 The all new R8 is the most powerful production Audi model ever built, designed for maximum dynamism in all of its technical aspects from the Audi Space Frame (A.S.F.) to its aerodynamics and newly developed quattro all-wheel drive. The naturally-aspirated midmounted V10 guarantees tremendous performance,

especially in the V10 Plus version sporting 449 kW. The R8 success story began with the first generation in 2007. Since then, the company has sold approximately 27,000 units worldwide. Launched in South Africa also in 2007, the Audi R8 found 345 homes in the local market during its life-cycle.

LEXUS RC 200t is a true GT This term describes the new RC 200t from Lexus to a tee, epitomising the original 'GT' concept. Its latest iteration in 200t guise is the most recent addition to the range and this model adopts a keen focus on balance and overall driveability to deliver an accomplished Grand Tourer experience.

The term 'GT' is often thrown around when referencing svelte, two-door coupé s. But what exactly is a 'GT'? It originates from the Italian 'Gran Turismo' that loosely translates to 'Grand Touring'. In other words, it’s a vehicle capable which is capable of covering long distances in great comfort and style - at considerable pace.

FORD Focus RS with AWD technology

features mark this special edition KB as a workhorse. X-Rider boasts an uprated towbar with 2.1-ton braked trailer capacity, LED daytime running lights and remote keyless entry. Owners will also get luxurious leather seats with X-Rider logo. The leather-trim steering wheel has a full selection of satellite controls and red stitching.

Ford's new Focus RS pioneers the Ford Performance AWD system, along with advanced technologies which deliver exceptional cornering speed, thrilling performance and unbridled driving enjoyment. With a specially engineered 257kW version of Ford's new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, the Focus RS is the fastest-ever RS model, achieving 0-100km/h

in 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 266km/h. "The all-new Focus RS is a serious machine with highperformance technology and innovative engineering that sets new benchmarks for driving exhilaration on the road and track," says Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager at the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

The All-New Jaguar F-PACE is now available in sub-Sahara African markets. Designed and engineered to offer agility, responsiveness and the refinement that all Jaguars are renowned for, it combines this with everyday versatility. Having been developed using Jaguar’s own Lightweight Aluminium Architecture, FPACE combines purity of line, surface and proportion with F-TYPE-inspired features.

ROAD TEST

Toyota

Fortuner

SPEC SHEET

2.8 GD-6 4x4

‘n Gerieflike insetsel is die ka m e ra wa t o u to m a t i e s aktiveer sodra jy die voertuig in trurat plaas.

Captiva

2.2D LT

Fresh styling, a keen price and seven seats - is this the ultimate family vehicle?

Text Hanjo Stier Images General Motors S.A.

SPEC SHEET

There's one question I keep getting asked and, wouldn't you know it, just this morning someone once again enquired what the best car was that I drove recently. Quite ironically, I mentioned the Chevrolet Captiva, which caused a fair amount of consternation as it's certainly not a superb automobile. So why did I mention a mediocre car? To deal with the mediocrity of it first , the Captiva is an elderly model from the General Motors stable which can trace some of its roots to the defunct Daewoo Motor division. This Korean brand built sensible, ordinary cars and that ethos is still quite tangible in some rebadged Chevrolets of the present; Captiva included. Although the body shows modern proportions for a mid-size SUV, the ageing design has been tinkered with regularly to keep it fresh. Its most recent injection of youth includes new light clusters all

around, various trim items and luxuries inside and out. Touchscreen infotainment with CarPlay and Bluetooth; it's all here. The Captiva cabin design is plain and sober; you won't find crazy shapes or daring contours among the sensible switchgear, soft-touch material and hard plastics. The fit and finish is below par by today's standards and as another sign of its age, I found the trip computer buttons oddly placed... near my right knee. Your initial movements and first driving experiences in a Captiva won't be too encouraging either. The doors don't thud closed like an Audi, there are no crisp German displays and you'll search in vain for any sort of extravagance or opulence in here. Oh yes, and the driver's seat rocks backwards and forwards as you drive. Shoddy quality then? Besides a few random infotainment system resets, I don't think so.

Below-average quality would be more fitting because nothing fell off, rattled or expired in my week with this Captiva 2.2D LT; and everyone commented on how vastly spacious and comfortable its big, seven-seater cabin was. Even the big and handsome 18inch alloys with 235 rubber fitted to this model couldn't detract from its relaxing and unstressed driving experience. The Captiva, perhaps as a result of its age, still rides like most family vehicles used to; before everyone decided that they needed 30-inch rims and Formula 1 suspension on the school run. Equipped with a 2,231cc in-line four-cylinder Turbo-diesel engine, this 2.2D version can call upon maximum power of 135kW or torque of 400Nm. Although it is a tad noisy (and smelly) at idle, I'm happy to report that this engine's power delivery and everyday response is excellent – certainly back on par with rivals.

Chevrolet claims average Diesel use of 7.8L/100km from the 65L tank and while our weekly average was around 9.5, a bit of effort should certainly reward you with eight or thereabouts. Put your foot down and, besides wet traction issues, a Captiva 2.2D should hit 100km/h in 9.8 seconds (we got 9.46 at sea level) and run out of puff at 192km/h. Not bad‌ Fans of those snappy dual-clutch gearboxes look away now. This car carries an old-fashioned but oh-so-smooth six-speed slusho-matic. It lacks paddle shifts but offers a tip-shift function; which I ignored. Yet again, like most good family cars once had, this Captiva relies on a wonderfully stretchy torque converter and slow, butter-smooth gear changes. If, like me, you're suddenly feeling a warm appreciation for the old Chevy's family friendliness, just wait for the best bit.

This sizable and simple SUV, which doesn't have costly optional extras to choose from, can be yours for a mere N$431,300. Pardon the rather strong language but that's a HELL of a lot of car for the money! Included in that very keen price is a 5-year/120,000km warranty, 3year/60,000km service plan and all modern amenities like ABS brakes with EBD and BAS, full stability control with hill assist, power windows and mirrors, six airbags, child locks and ISOFIX anchors, eight speakers and LED daytime running lights; among others. So what if the cabin lacks quality and the driver's seat is wonky. So what if the gearbox is relaxed and the badge has little street cred. If you want an Audi, buy an Audi. If you want a cheap and cheerful, big and comfortable, brawny and economical vehicle which the kids can mess in, say hello to your new car.

10 PRESS RELEASE

f/NAMWHEELS

FIAT

AUG / SEPT 2016

Fullback

H Bakkies tend to be Japanese. This one has a sexy Italian accent...

Following its premiere at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show, the newest addition to the Fiat Professional range was revealed at a special event held 100 metres below ground level. Backed by over a hundred years of history and their excellent reputation in the global LCV industry, the Fiat Professional brand is making another leap forward with the launch of the Fullback, completing its current extensive range of products and services tailored to the needs of professional customers. With Fullback, the brand makes a strong entry into the mediumduty pick-up segment in the EMEA region, where 650,000 units were sold in 2015. Finally we are ready to enter into this segment and to replicate the great international success of the brand here. The new Fiat Fullback will play a leading role in the segment with robust construction and reliability. This new work hero is the result of understanding the needs of professional customers but it's also perfectly at ease when used for leisure, thanks to its great versatility. Fullback is ready to take on any challenge, hence its name, which is derived from the key position in rugby or American football the last man in the line of defence and also a defender in attack - a player who is capable of dealing with any situation. This is well summarised by the claim: "Built for your work. And for your life". Fullback has sporty proportions with its forward extending cab and a reduced front overhang. It has a touch of Italian style in line with the new stylistic mark of the brand. The sides have distinct ribs that streamline the body and the rear is well connected to the cab. Fullback interiors reflect the functionality of a work vehicle as well as the comfort and elegance of a high range SUV. Perfectly in line with the best of the competition in terms of

configuration, dimensions and engines, Fiat Professional's new pick-up will be available with two engine options on the double cab - a 2.5-litre diesel with a power output from 100kW to 131kW; the single cab comes standard with a 2.4-litre petrol engine that delivers 97kW.

warranty and 5-year/100 000km service plan. Mopar - the FCA brand for services, Customer Care, original accessories and original spare parts - has created a dedicated line of accessories to enhance the stylistic and functional features of the new Fullback.

The petrol engine is provided with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the diesel engine offer is aligned to the best competition and can be combined, according to each market's offer, with a manual or automatic transmission, both with five speeds. At the time of launch the diesel is available with a manual transmission.

Among these, the main elements worth noting are those dedicated to the rear load compartment, designed to satisfy both the work and leisure needs of customers.

Fullback is available in a 4X2 version (rear-wheel drive) in the single and double cab, as well as a 4X4 version (all-wheel drive) in the double cab; the latter will be the one most appreciated by those who, for work reasons, need to reach areas that are far away from asphalted roads or drive down tough off-road trails, with a (part time) 4x4 manual selection and rear differential lockers (e locker), the Fullback is capable of getting you through the toughest terrain. Built for the most challenging missions, Fullback boats a large load capacity and a high degree of strength, which is mostly due to its ladder frame chassis. In detail, Fullback has a max. height of 1,780 mm, up to 1,815 mm width and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. The length varies depending on configuration: it reaches 5,220 mm with the Single Cab and 5,345 mm with the Double Cab. The load compartment length also varies - 2,265 mm for the Single Cab and 1,520 mm for the Double Cab. Its capacity is more than one ton and its towable weight is up to three tonnes. The bakkie is available in three models, namely a Single Cab 2.4 Petrol 97kW 4x2 STD, a Double cab 2.5 diesel 100kW 4x2 LX and Double cab 2.5 Diesel 131kW 4x4 SX. The range comes standard with a 3 year/ 100 000km vehicle

These include front nudge bar, side steps, load body sports bar and rear bumper. These locally produced components will be available as a set or individually depending on the customer's needs and all are available in polished stainless steel or black powder coated stainless steel. Manufactured by Artav, these Fullback cosmetic accessories can be ordered with the vehicle or fitted as an after-market accessory by Fiat Professional dealerships. Furthermore, a tow bar, designed in collaboration with Bosal, as well as roof bars from Thule, make it possible for customers to take full advantage of the vehicle during their leisure time with different solutions available for transporting all sorts of objects, such as roof boxes, windsurfing gear, kayaks, and bicycles. The Fullback range is completed by various accessories that are a perfect fit with the technical and stylistic features of the model: the kick plate customised with the name of the vehicle, the side chrome-plated mouldings that protect the doors, chrome mirror covers, rear parking sensors, rubber or fabric protective mats, underbody protection, fog lights with DRL function and valve covering caps sporting with the vehicle logo. Whilst most of these accessories will be available from launch, several imported items will only become available in the coming months.

SAFETY FEATURE

#NAMWHEELS

CHOOSING THE CORRECT

LANE

WHY: It’s important to follow lanes

BEFORE: Plan your route

OOPS: In the wrong lane. What now?

First and foremost, for your and every other road user’s safety - being in the wrong lane can cause serious accidents! Big intersections, traffic circles and highway on/off-ramps only work if everyone knows which lane they’re supposed to be in. No less important is the social aspect of picking the correct lane(s). Being in the wrong lane can lead to road rage from fellow road users!

It may sound silly but the easiest way to ensure that you’re always in the correct lane is to plan your route before departure - especially if it involves roads you haven’t travelled on before. Change lanes in good time, usually one intersection before a turn or junction. If multi-lane streets cause you stress, it may be wise to plan your route around those.

Don’t panic. And more importantly, DO NOT stop or swerve across multiple lanes to reach your goal! Continue in the current lane and, when possible, turn into a quiet street or stop to find another route. If you’ve missed a turn-off or road, simply go “around the block” or double-back at the next off-ramp. In traffic, turn around only when it’s safe to do so!

Pre-owned footprint

PUPKEWITZ AUTO

Pupkewitz Auto on the corner of Bell and Armstrong Streets in Windhoek opened its doors in May this year as part of the Pupkewitz Group's aim to capture more of the pre-owned vehicle market in Namibia. As a leading new vehicle retailer, the group identified a stronger used car market as the ideal opportunity to enlarge its pre-owned dealership footprint beyond that of its franchised (brand-specific) outlets.

Expansion plans The new, multi-brand Pupkewitz Auto is an in-house franchise with a further eight to 10 branches planned. The second branch in Windhoek's Independence Avenue started trading in July while the Swakopmund dealership should be open soon.

Premium strategy Pupkewitz Auto is not just another used car dealer and differentiates itself through key aspects of the business. Chief among these are its "wholesale to the public" strategy where fleet and bulk purchases allow enticing prices for customers. Besides a broad spectrum of all popular makes and types of vehicles, all units in stock are young models with less than 100,000km and no accident damage. 80% of stock retains a part of its manufacturer warranty but Pupkewitz Auto offers additional warranties as well.

Customer benefits Furthermore, customers can benefit from special business hours from Monday to Thursday where the business operates from 8am to 7pm (and 8pm in summer). An in-house F&I Business Manager offers convenient finance options with all major banks and Pupkewitz Auto can supply a comprehensive line-up of vehicle accessories, safety and convenience features, as well as insurance and financial policies.

Friendly and welcoming The friendly and professional staff of Pupkewitz Auto looks forward to welcoming you at their premises (corner of Bell and Armstrong Street, next to Old Power Station) for all your motoring needs. You'll find plenty of free parking and quite possibly your next dream car!

New

LENDING

KNOWLEDGE

What you need to know: Where before you could get a vehicle loan (bank approval dependent) with various options, the new Namibia Credit Agreement Act has stricter requirements for anyone wanting to finance a new set of wheels. Why, Larry, why? In essence, the act was made to protect consumers who may have overstretched their finances to buy a car. At the same time, it also protects the motor retail industry and banks. 10% deposit, 54 months The new act dictates that any finance application requires (at least) a 10% deposit and a contract period no longer than 54 months.

So what’s changed? Before the act came along, some companies would offer loans with no deposit and/or longer contract periods (like 60 or even 72 months). This is not allowed anymore.

What about interest rate? Speak to your bank or the financial manager about the prevailing interest rate, what deals they offer and if you may choose a fixed or linked interest rate.

Anything else? Yes! RV’s (residual values) or balloon payments are also on the naughty list from now on.

Who benefits from this? Mostly you, the consumer. Instead of paying too little for a car you cannot afford (and possibly getting a very nasty surprise in the future) this new act encourages people to save up longer and buy cars they can afford.

Will this affect my current car loan? No, but do confirm that with your financial institution. All new applications would be subject to the new rules. Are these terms fixed? Some institutions may allow bigger deposits (above 10%) or a shorter period (less than 54 months).

KNOWLEDGE

Rules

TERMINOLOGY Purchase Price The vehicle’s cash price, let’s assume N$ 300,000

Deposit Part of the purchase price you pay upfront, now at least 10% = N$ 30,000

Interest Rate The prime lending rate in percent - e.g. 10.75%

RV / Balloon A future payment option which is not allowed.

A negative outcome will be reduced (non-cash) sales of vehicles.

Contract length Number of instalments (months) you have to pay. Now set at a maximum term of 54.

Positive side effects include fewer repossessions and a used car upswing.

Carbon Tax

Another tax? As of July 2016, new and used vehicles, light bulbs and tyres sold in Namibia are subject to a carbon tax. What’s a carbon? Carbon emissions are a major contributor to environmental damage like global warming. Most vehicles produce carbon dioxide (among other things) which is a nasty side-effect of burning fuel. By taxing vehicles for these emissions, the consumer may think twice about buying (or maintaining) an old / dirty car with heavy CO2 emissions. OK. What else? The carbon tax also applies to filament light bulbs (N$3) and new or used tyres (N$10).

Light bulbs. Really? Yes, really. Old (filament) light bulbs consume more energy than the modern, clever ones like L.E.D. bulbs. By taxing old bulbs, people are encouraged to switch over to the more environmentallyfriendly ones. Tyres, especially discarded ones, are also considered big pollutants and aren’t easy to recycle, thus they are subject to a tax as well. Right. How much? Based on the vehicle maker’s claim, every gram above 120 (g/km) of CO2 emissions is taxed at N$40 to N$100 - we had conflicting sources. NamWheels will soon publish a top list of vehicles which emit less than 120g/km!

Filament-type light bulbs

N$3 each

Pneumatic tyres

N$10 each

Passenger vehicles < 5t

N$40-100 / gram above 120g/km

What you need to know: We somehow haven’t had much exposure to the Ford Figo except for a tired specimen we picked up from a rental company.

Your logo here!

w w w. 8 2 5 . c o . z a facebook.com/825Media

Also part of the whole parcel was something Ford calls the “Powershift” automatic, some new dual-clutch automated gearbox of sorts. But more of that later. Leaning on its brand design – as everyone does – the Figo sedan won’t stop traffic with its looks nor will it cause projectile vomiting. Decent proportions, clean lines, cool alloys. It’s ok. Some more facts: Opting for this Titanium version will give you full climate control, a cool multi-function steering

wheel, a highly adjustable driver’s chair, four additional airbags, electronic stability program, hill start assist and the very talented Ford SYNC multimedia system over and above the normal Figo sedan standard features. Its instrumentation is basic, the messy Ford dashboard isn’t. All seats are comfortable and support four adults on long distances, five will be a push. Figo sedan’s boot takes up to 445L, a VW Polo Vivo sedan capitulates at 432L but an Etios sedan swallows 562L (Also see page 5). The Toyota is not available as an auto, though. Where we went: To work, home, work, home, etc. A small stint on the highway proved that this new Figo sedan happily cruises along with traffic and, like all 1.5litre mills, its 82kW/136Nm engine is quite eager and revhappy.

Our GPS performance testing revealed a mild launch mode and 0-100km/h time of 10.02 seconds. Ford claims 12! What to watch out for: That automated box of gears. Like the early DSG attempts from Hyundai and Mercedes, this unit is very jerky and feels indecisive... especially when going from coasting to half or full throttle. One tester came back from their first Figo drive and thought it was broken... A little button on the lever gives you a degree of gear control but left to its own devices, it’s pretty awful. Why you’ll want one: The space of a small sedan at a reasonable price, mixed with modern technology and the convenience of an automatic. We would only advocate this budget sedan to people who can’t - or don’t want to - pilot a manual because the Titanium trim and modern gadgets are only available in this model with this gearbox.

GTi Clubsport Volkswagen Golf

GTI what? Golf GTi N$470,000 (6M) 162kW / 350Nm N$490,000 (DSG) GTi with Performance Pack 169kW / 350Nm N$530,000 (DSG) GTi Clubsport N$600,000 (DSG) 195 - 213*kW / 350 - 380*Nm GTi Clubsport S 228kW

P.O.A.

Golf R N$600,000 (6M) 206kW / 380Nm N$630,000 (DSG) *10-second overboost function

Faster than a GTi but milder than a Golf R - meet the new Golf GTi Clubsport

More than forty years after its birth, the Golf GTI certainly doesn’t need an introduction anymore. For those who still need a reminder, this legendary Volkswagen Golf was among the first “hot hatches” in the world by combining entertaining performance with the everyday practicality of a sensible hatchback model. Seven generations later, the fast Volkswagen has spawned countless competitors - and quite the collection of models. The hard-core, 206kW, four-wheeldrive Golf R sits atop the (non-GTI) pecking order. It is armed with every imaginable performance-enhancing substance pumping through its hairy chest; ready to defend Volkswagen’s honour. The regular Golf GTI offers 162kW or 350Nm and – in the humble opinion of the author - an extremely complete package of dynamism, practicality, quality and efficiency.

Anyone who somehow needs more oomph could specify the optional “Performance Pack” which cranks up peak power (to 169kW) and driving dynamics a few more notches. This new GTI Clubsport neatly slots in between that Performance Pack and the Golf R, not just price-wise. Maximum power is up substantially to 195kW (or 265 horsepower) but torque remains unchanged at 350 Newton-meters. More crucially, this version of the Volkswagen Group’s amazing 2-litre EA888 turbo-petrol four cylinder engine occasionally allows up to 10 seconds of over-boost - to 213kW. Combined with even more cosmetic and mechanical go-faster bits, VW South Africa calls it “the fastest GTI”. Its overseas name-badge is actually Clubsport Edition 40 but we only got our first Volkswagen Golf GTI’s 34 years ago so that name has been omitted here.

Text Hanjo Stier Images Volkswagen of South Africa

Like previous “Edition” models, this GTI enjoys a limited production run and distinguishes itself with unique styling features. The most obvious among these include new front and rear bumpers with aerodynamic advantages, BiXenon headlights with LED daytime lights, side skirts and black side decals a-la the 1976 original, larger chrome tail pipes and a two-piece rear roof spoiler. Those striking 18-inch “Belvedere” wheels you see in the second photo of our mini-gallery come as standard; VW’s 19-inch “Brescia” alloys are an optional extra. Interior highlights, beyond the solid quality and sporty details of a normal GTI, are part-velour sports seats (at the front) with honeycomb pattern and GTI badges as well as a velour sport steering wheel featuring a red 12 o’clock marking. Racing bucket seats at the front are an optional extra.

Mechanically, the Clubsport shines with new spring and damper tuning, a progressively variable steering rack and the XDS front differential for improved agility, cornering and traction in every imaginable driving situation - especially spirited ones. The reduced tendency to under-steer or lift-off over-steer helped a similar setup to klap the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 49 seconds. While we didn’t go to such extremes, the local launch included numerous mountain passes, closed highways, busy byways and some drag racing on a race track. With four adaptive drive modes, you may choose between the fidgety “Sport”, balanced “Normal”, softer “Comfort” and a very customizable “Individual” mode. For such a powerful front-wheeldrive vehicle, the Clubsport puts its power down well and will obey an experienced driver’s commands with great composure.

GTi Heritage

After hundreds of kilometers at various speeds, my co-driver and I agreed that this feels like a GTI with software tuning and better running gear; but it’s available brand-new with a warranty and service plan. At N$600,000 the new Clubsport is N$110,000 more expensive than a GTI (with DSG) but only N$30,000 cheaper than the Golf R DSG. More than a golden middle child, the Clubsport is also aimed at fans and collectors with its limited production run of a few hundred units only being available until the end of 2016. For those die-hard GTi aficionados, Volkswagen hinted at the hard-core, 228kW, stripped-out, two-door and manual-only GTI Clubsport S making its way to South Africa soon. With just 47 units coming to South African shores, you best place your order now. Long live the GTI and its many, many derivatives!

Image Source: Netcarshow.com N.B. These are local / ZA specs while photos are of international models. Other high-performance Golfs like VR6 or Golf R have been excluded from this list.

Yes, yes, we know - we’ve published this feature before! But wait, there’s new information included now. Go on, have a look:

Mark I from 1976

Mark II from 1983

Mark III from 1991 Mark IV from 1997

Mark V from 2004

Mark VI from 2009

Mark VII from 2014

Here's where it all started, with a very simple recipe: small car, peppy engine.

Bigger and better than Mk1, the "Jumbo Golf" GTi came with 8V and 16V motors.

The difficult third album, and one most (local) fans want to forget. Fun to drive but pap.

One of the biggest changes in GTi history, this was the first turbocharged model.

Another big step up for GTi with a new engine and lots of modern technology.

Not wanting to mess with a winning recipe, Mk6 was a soft evolution from Mk5.

More fine-tuning and minor tweaks make the seventh version even better.

DRAG WARS

Serious Fast machines, superbikes, a whole lot of fun and a new Namibian record!

Team RMC of Namibia with Speed & Sound hosted 16 fast cars from South Africa at the recent ‘DRAG WARS’ held at an airfield in Okahandja on Saturday 23 July 2016. This was the third installment of this amazing cross-border saga between Namibia and South Africa and, quite fittingly, took three months to plan and organise. As you can probably judge by these photos taken on the day, both the competitor and spectator turn-out was fantastic and the day was jampacked with drag-racing action, including a brand-new Namibian record! But more of that later... The event saw official “Nationals leg 4" and privateers compete together with an impressive line-up of cars from South Africa and was crowned by a Speed ‘n Sound scouting at Windhoek’s Action Arena in the evening of the same day. The wellknown South African magazine was scouting for feature rides to include in future editions.

There were some seriously fast cars, and DRAG WARS was even graced by expensive supercars - including a McLaren and Nissan GT-R! And let’s not forget the line-up of superbikes that also competed. One of the event’s main organisers, Team RMC, shared this with us: “So the day finally arrived yesterday. After three months of planning we could make Drag Wars happen. The third and very special installment.

Text and images SMit Biz

5. The first Namibian ever to run a 10 second quarter-mile. 6. The first time a Namibian driver puts up the fastest time of the day. Huge Congratulations to De Waal Theunissen on your 10.4 second run! And a big thank you to our South African guests, the Speed and Sound crew, our Namibian Race Team, our sponsors and partners, spectators, supporters and most of all, Team RMC for making this happen!”

Here's why: 1. The most ever entries recorded at any of our events. 2. The most cars from South Africa ever brought up to participate at any of our events. 3. The widest range of cars ever seen at an official drag meet....from a 1.6 bakkie to a McLaren supercar. 4. The most 10 second runs ever seen in Namibia.

SMit Biz would like to thank Team RMC, Speed & Sound, 1FM, Monster Energy for this amazing event! If you like our work give us a shout for a quote and remember to visit our Facebook page (search for ‘Smit Biz’) to view our DRAG WARS gallery with over 370 high-resolution photos! Also, keep an eye on our Youtube channel (search for Smit Biz) for the video of Drag Wars to be released soon.
