TOYOTA Hilux tops the sales charts
FIAT produces two millionth 500
NISSAN reaches new sales records
BMW electrification corporate strategy
HINO on the move with WESBANK S.A. SUZUKI hits sales record in South Africa new factory and model Motoring Experience
The Toyota Hilux has topped the sales charts in the month of July, also claiming top spot as South Africa’s bestselling model year to date – the new Hilux is ahead of its nearest competitor by 613 units. Further amplifying Toyota’s chart-topping performance in the latest sales report were stellar showings by Corolla / Auris / Quest in the passenger vehicle segment. These three models racked up a total of 1,480 units.
Shortly after celebrating its 60th Anniversary in July, the Fiat 500 marked yet another auspicious milestone with the two millionth unit produced. This feat was the most recent success of the ‘great little car’ that has broken records and reaped many awards in its long history. The impressive total of six million cars sold in sixty years of history includes over four million units sold of its 1957 forerunner.
“Nissan has achieved record results in global production and sales in the Jan-June 2017 period,” said Executive Vice President Daniele Schillaci, the global head of marketing and sales at Nissan. In South Africa, there was marginal improvement in new vehicle sales during June 2017. Sales of bakkies, panel vans and minibuses were up 8%. Nissan South Africa sold 1,067 NP200s, 1,130 NP300s and 137 Navaras.
Electrification is one of the central pillars of the BMW Group’s corporate strategy Number One > Next and the company has announced that all their model series can be electrified, with full-electric or plug-in hybrid drivetrain in addition to the combustion engine. Additional electrified models will appear soon, and the next generation of BMW vehicle architecture enables further fully-electric vehicles.
Suzuki Auto has hit another milestone in July 2017, after recording the highest sales month since its inception in South Africa in 2008. The Japanese brand recorded total sales of 744 units, which represents a jump of 27% over June sales and an equally impressive jump of 68 units over its previous record. Under the 700-unit barrier, Suzuki achieved its best sales in September of 2014, when 676 new vehicles were sold.
The Hino truck brand may be 75 years old and its history can be traced back 100 years, but Japan's leading heavy and extra-heavy truck maker is moving ahead strongly in the 21st century. The production is increasing, exports are growing, a hightech factory has just been commissioned near Durban in South Africa and a very important new generation Hino 500 range is being rolled out worldwide.
The WesBank SA Motoring Experience, staged at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and Conference Centre from September 1-3, will make use of six themes to ensure that it caters for all interest groups in terms of the wider world or motoring. This means that this year’s programme will range from test drives and interactive motoring to a 4x4 experience, super cars and pit access to elite classics and motorsport legends.
FORD upgrades its conveyor system VOLKSWAGEN spirit of Amarok The third annual Spirit of Amarok competition saw various teams from South Africa, Australia, Botswana, Germany, Namibia, Russia and the United Kingdom battling it out to be named the toughest amateur 4x4 precision driver. This prestigious off-roading challenge took place in the wonderful Kalahari Desert from 13 to 19 August 2017 and was once again hosted by the motorsport legend and Amarok brand ambassador, Sarel van der Merwe. The event saw a total of 21 teams of two (one driver and a navigator) from all over the world showcasing their offroading skills.
Van der Merwe explains the details: “This international competition tests the 4x4 technical skills and abilities of the drivers in some of Africa’s toughest terrains and this year will be no different.” In this year’s challenge, apart from the most spirited team award, there are prizes to be won for the top team from each country, the top three countries, as well as the top three teams overall. The prizes include trophies, medals and cash prizes, whilst the overall winning team will get awarded with the coveted Wolf Trophy. For more information visit http://spiritofamarok.com

The Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has invested more than R125million to upgrade a 3,000m long vehicle conveyor system at the company’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, South Africa. This was done in order to increase production capacity for the locally-built Ranger and Everest. The investment forms a part of FMCSA’s manufacturing expansion plans to increase the plant’s capacity by 22% from 27 jobs-per-hour to 33 jobs-per-hour by January of 2018. This follows the move to a two-vehicle facility last year when the Ford Everest joined the Ranger on the Pretoria assembly line.
More than 7,500 of the thirdgeneration Hyundai Tucsons were sold in southern Africa in the 13 months since its South African launch last year – claiming a 16,5% share in the SUV’s segment. That is one of several good reasons to put a body kit on this popular SUV model, as well as four big and very handsome black alloy wheels and a pair of exhaust pipes to create the bold and beautiful Tucson Sport.
Officially, on the specification sheet, this seventh derivative of Hyundai’s very popular SUV will be known as the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 TGDI Executive Sport. This exciting new model is powered by a turbocharged 1,6-litre petrol engine that delivers 150kW peak power and 295Nm of torque, and boasts the comprehensive Executive level of features found in other derivatives in the range.
The GWM range stretches from the much-loved H5 SUV, which was just re-introduced, to the Steed 6, a premium double-cab that plays with the market leaders in this contested segment – at an unbeatable price. But GWM vehicles initially gained traction on the local market through the appetite for hard work, be it on the construction site or the farm. And these roots haven't been forgotten with the Steed 5 range of bakkies that's willing and able to roll up its sleeves and get its hands dirty.

MERCEDES reveals X-Class Besides bringing the bold design of their acclaimed Concept X-CLASS pick-up to production with a largely unchanged shape, the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class is uniquely versatile in terms of its area of application – it can be used as a rugged, allterrain pickup but also as a vehicle for urban lifestyles and family activities. LUCKY still determined as ever
AUDI RS 3 Sedan and Sportback
From being a TV star to the surrogate mom of many an orphaned cheetah cub that come to N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary in Namibia, Lucky has lived quite the life. You might remember Lucky as the three-legged cheetah which captured the hearts of viewers in the Golf television commercial back in 2009. The TV commercial told the story of Lucky and Marlice van Vuuren (co-founder of
With high-tech suspension, a new five-cylinder engine with best-in-class performance and a sharper look, the all new Audi RS 3 Sedan and RS3 Sportback are at the top of their class. RS-specific interior details and the unmatched sound of the 2.5 TFSI engine complete the emotional experience. The Audi RS 3 Sedan is now available with RS 3 Sportback following in November 2017.
the N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary) who shared the touching story of Lucky the cheetah whose hind leg was amputated due to damage which was caused by a gin trap. Despite this obstacle Lucky can be seen running and jumping in the commercial and at the end of the advert she lets her hair loose in the back of a Volkswagen Golf with the windows down.
Five-cylinder engines are a great tradition at Audi. In the 1980s they made a decisive contribution to the brand, making a comeback in 2009 when the 2.5 TFSI was fitted in the TT RS. In 2011 followed the first RS 3 Sportback, in 2013 the RS Q3 and the RS 3 Sportback in 2015. It is now joined by the new RS 3 Sedan with which the brand is expanding its international offering.
HILUX Black edition
DUSTER Auto
F40 wins Concours
S.A.'s best-selling vehicle, the all-conquering Toyota Hilux is now available in specialedition “Black” guise. Exclusive to the flagship 2.8 GD-6 double-cab range and available in a choice of three striking hues – Glacier White, Chromium Silver or Graphite Grey – this special edition comes with a host of designer touches, created to elevate the Black above its more subdued stable mates. It’s a small premium (approx. N$27,000) over the regular model, for a lot more spec.
In keeping with consumer needs the Renault Duster range has been enhanced with the introduction of the new EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) Model. EDC is a 6-speed automatic gearbox with 2 clutches, for optimized efficiency with the ideal gear selected via an electronic control unit. This “dry” dual clutch system combines the comfort of an automatic gearbox and the responsiveness of a manual – offering flexibility and fuel efficiency.
A beautifully prepared 1989 Ferrari F40 was the overall winner of Concours South Africa 2017, held at Sun City from 4 to 6 August. The iconic Ferrari celebrated 40 years of the manufacturer in the late 1980s; it was also the final project overseen by the great Enzo Ferrari. This immaculate example, one of just a handful in South Africa, is owned by Keith Rivers, one of the founder members of the Tiger Wheels organisation.
OPEL updates the Corsa range Opel has revised the Corsa models range resulting in improved specifications for some models as well as price drops across the range. These changes came after intensive market research conducted by the S.A. team, with over 600 B-segment hatchback owners polled. It resulted in rationalisation of the Corsa range, with the
model line-up reduced by one derivative and the rest changing specs – some of them significantly. The most severe revisions come at the bottom of the price range. The Essentia still spearheads Corsa on the affordability front with a new 1L 3-cylinder mated to a sixspeed manual gearbox, for better value and efficiency.
AMG celebrates 50 years with a growl After 50 years of delivering great driving performance, Mercedes-AMG has given the world a rather recognisable voice: the signature growl of an AMG engine. To celebrate AMG’s fifthieth anniversary, the brand is calling on fans to imitate this sound on their social media channels, tagging MercedesBenz South Africa and using
the hashtag #AMGgrowl. To kick off the campaign, Mercedes-AMG compiled videos with their ‘Friends of the Brand’, including fashion designer David Tlale; the musician J’Something of Mi Casa; TV personality Jeannie D and the environmentalist Kevin Richardson, among others, doing an impression of the distinctive growl.
RANGE ROVER Velar ready to order VOLKSWAGEN’s new Golf R and GTD Following the launch of the new Golf TSI and Golf GTI facelift in May, Volkswagen South Africa has introduced two additional performance models in the Golf range namely, the Golf R and Golf GTD. With over 350,000 Golfs sold in southern Africa since its launch four decades ago, the updated seventh generation
Golf is once again redefining its hotly-contested market segment by bringing 'big car' technology to the compact family car class. The Golf R’s popularity in South Africa (and Namibia) continues to strengthen and together with the GTI make up nearly 60% of Golf sales in South Africa. Sales figures for Namibia weren’t mentioned.
HAVAL lists reasons to look at the H2 1) Haval last year sold over one million SUVs in China. 2) Haval is the luxury subbrand of GWM, which enjoys the full backing of the giant mothership in China. 3) The new H2 is redefining what cynics thought about Chinese vehicles. 4) More Haval products are set for our market. 5) A five-year / 100 000km
warranty and five-year / 60 000km service plan, and five years roadside assistance are standard. 6) The H2 boasts a five-star C NCAP rating, helped by its standard six airbags. Yup, six. 7) Equipment levels, they're lavish. 8) Even the most respected motoring media has been rapturous about the H2.
The new Range Rover Velar is now available to order at Land Rover dealers across South Africa. Customers can also use the Land Rover Configurator to customise their own Velar. It’s the fourth Range Rover family member and it brings a whole new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance – as it is the most customisable, to date. Pricing in South Africa for the Velar starts at ZAR947,700.
PEUGEOT’s new 3008 SUV Peugeot recently launched the new 3008, the brand’s first and most advanced SUV, is apparently taking the CSUV segment by storm. the NamWheels
top5
Welcome to one of NamWheels' more regular features - our list of top 5 car-related items. Times are tough. You’re living on two minute noodles and your shoes have holes in them but you saved plenty of big notes (and a meaty deposit) for a shiny new car. Of course you could always look at a more affordable second-hand car (which offers better value) but we are focussing on new cars only. What to get, what to test-drive? We at NamWheels love to help with our list of cars you should consider. Feel free to send us comments or feedback: info@namwheels.com
AFFORDABLE CARS
TATA Bolt 1.2T XMS
This was a very tough call but we put this cool new Indian hatchback first because of its good specifications and great turbo-petrol engine. It costs about 160 thousand and there’s an even posher model for ten grand more. Great value!
SUZUKI Celerio 1.0 GA
If you want an affordable little runabout - look no further. It costs about N$143,000 while the Celerio GL with better specs is a bit more; and also available as an auto. Eager and frugal little engine but no service plan with this model.
VW Take up! 1.0
Brand reputation, dealer count and our love for this superb little car should’ve given it first spot but the entry-level “Take up!” is expensive (at least 170 grand) and low on specs. The better “Move up!” is above 180k.
HYUNDAI Grand i10 1.25
We should’ve put the Hyundai i10 on this list but it lacks some essential safety features and “The Grand” is a much better car. Expect a very perky engine, more versatility and superior specifications for a budget of around N$200,000.
SUZUKI Swift 1.2 GA
You want value for money? The ageing but excellent Swift costs just N$162,900 for this GA entry-level model. Not very powerful but easy to drive and extremely fuel efficient! For more ride height, see our Ignis launch report in this issue...

Ignis
AUG / SEPT 2017
“...very effective in the ever- expanding city, yet practical enough to take the dirt roads on a family weekend.”
Cheeky F and cheapy - we attended the launch of Suzuki’s new mini-city-SUV, the Ignis!
#LikeNoOther was the main topic at the recent launch of the brand-new Suzuki Ignis. First shown at the 2015 Paris Motor show and launched in South Africa at the end of May 2017, this car should attract an abundance of attention. Even before its release, the Ignis has been voted a runnerup in the World Urban Car award. The reason for this is that the Ignis can’t be seen as either a Jimny or Swift, but rather a combination of the two iconic Suzuki models. Ignis is Latin for “fire”, by the way. With a length of 3,700 mm, 1,690mm width and 180mm of ground clearance, it’s slightly smaller than a Swift, yet just a bit closer to the road than the Jimny. Although it’s only front-wheel drive, the Ignis 1.2 litre engine (61kW/113Nm) is well suited to the urban jungle and a bit of rural terrain. The four-cylinder definitely delivered, even on the longer stretches of its launch route. At an indicated 120km/h it’s doing around 3,000rpm. With five gears running relatively low revs, the Ignis claims fuel consumption of 5.1L/100km; and 0.2 less for the automatic. 0-100 takes 11,6 seconds. The Ignis carries the same HEARTECT chassis as Baleno, resulting in a lower overall mass. The combination of its McPherson struts, coil springs with gas filled dampers, antiroll bar (front suspension) and coil springs with an antiroll bar (rear) makes the drive very comfortable. Clinging to the bends, the little Suzuki’s rather light weight (850kg kerb mass) also helps it to comfortably sweep over any bumps. Inside, the Ignis seems a lot bigger than from the outside.
The front and back of the cabin is large enough to house 1.80m adults. The luggage room of 260L can expand to a sizeable 469 litres with the rear seats folded. Both the GL and GLX models feel roomy and comfortable inside with the two-tone black and cream scheme creating a joyful and ‘hip’ atmosphere. The GL and GLX models also come with several add-ons such as electric windows, remote central locking, power steering, radio/MP3/CD/USB (Bluetooth in the GLX model) system, air-conditioning, 12V power socket, Dual SRS front airbags, ABS, EBD, electronic brake assistance, side impact protection, Isofix anchors and of course child-proof rear door locks. The GLX also features a start / stop button, climate control, rear speakers, front tweeters and an information system which displays average fuel consumption, driving range and average speed. Another option is the central touch-screen that can connect with iOS and Android devices. Ignis exterior design follows Suzuki DNA with features like sharp daytime running lights, a large front bumper and large air intake. The GLX features front fog lights and cool LED daytime running lights, the GL has halogen lights. Besides its higher ground clearance, Ignis also looks a bit more “buff” with bolder wheel arches. Combined with 15” black alloys and a chrome accent around its front grille, the GLX model is especially appealing and aggressive. Already respected for its success with Jimny and Swift, Suzuki keeps improving their line-up. We recently drove the new Baleno, one of the best handling and practical cars in the market segment.

With the release of the Ignis, it is clear that Suzuki wants to continue innovating. Allow me to make a Harry Potter reference - Ignis is like Hermoine Granger’s handbag. It looks small from the outside yet is a comfy and spacious “home” on the inside. Yes, luggage space may be small with four people inside, but the Ignis is bigger than its small hatchback competitors. The added ground clearance is an absolute benefit and the car has little body roll around corners. The 1.2 GLX will also be sold with a five-speed automated manual gearbox. This means that no clutch will be needed for gearshifts. The driving quality is very good with little road noise, comfy seats and an easy-touse info system. The Ignis GLX model features a lot more practicality inside, although both the GL and GLX models will have the same space and comfort inside. Suzuki, as it always does, has managed to think innovatively about this new model. Being a small hatchback, it will be very effective in the everexpanding city, yet practical enough to take the dirt roads on a family weekend. The Ignis, like the Swift and Jimny before it, is sure to stand out on the roads. This then is exactly what Suzuki is looking for, to create new cars in innovative forms. All of the Ignis models will come with a promotional FIVE year / 200,000km warranty and a two-year / 30,000km service plan. Navara
AUG / SEPT 2017
“It's taken Nissan rather too long to get these new models into the market...”
Has F the wait for the new Nissan Navara been worthwhile?
It's been a long time coming because a lot of time was spent ensuring Nissan's latest bakkie can master local conditions. The company said the same thing at the press launch in Australia so one wonders just how different our conditions might be. For now, the new Navara is built in Thailand which is surprising but let's rather concentrate on what fresh ideas the new Navara brings to bakkieville. Regular readers know that I am not a likely bakkie buyer and have no desire to drive off-road. The biggest load I’ll carry is an overnight bag for a car launch in a neighbouring land. The bakkie has weaseled its way into the nation’s psyche and Nissan is keen to reassert itself in a category it was ensconced in until it allowed the likes of Ford to muscle in, largely as result of having middle-aged offerings. It has long been my view that Nissan produces some of the best engines in the business, so it came as no surprise to me that the new motor in the Navara is the star of the show. Under the shapely bonnet of the new model sits a 2.3 litre four cylinder diesel invigorated by twin turbochargers which help immeasurably in producing a set of figures that underline just why this mill works so well, right across the rev range. Its very competitive 140kW arrives at just 3,750rpm while peak torque of 450Nm is there from a dawdling 1,500rpm to 2,500rpm. That means that the engine is almost always offering maximum pull whether in slow conditions or on the open road, where it is pleasantly muted. At cold start-up it can be a little clattery but otherwise it goes about its business with due decorum and provides the kind of power to at least match most of the 3.0 litre brigade with the exception of the V6 Amarok. I should disclose that three 4x4 models made up the range at launch, being the 2.3D SE and LE 6-speed manual as well as the 2.3D LE 7-speed auto.
That should tell you all are identically powered just as they are all fitted with Nissan's big talking point- the 5-link rear suspension with coil springs. If ever there's one aspect that lets a bakkie down, it's unladen ride. Leaf springs and a solid axle, in conjunction with an elevated ride height and ladder frame chassis can’t produce a cushy drive so how does the Navara resolve this? On paper, it does so by better location of what is still a solid rear axle, thanks to the first in class five links. The use of coils for springing in place of nearuniversal leaf springs was a move intended to provide more progressive and cushioned reactions to road imperfections. Does it work? I have to be honest and say not quite as well as the brand publicists might like you to believe, but that doesn't mean the changes haven't wrought some improvements. Considering the unladen state of both vehicles we tried, there’s less hop on corrugations and a more cushioned feel to the ride when bumps are encountered, but that doesn't mean that this bakkie has become a limousine and load carrier rolled into one. On undulating tar roads, the isolation of the chassis from external disturbances is better, as is overall refinement. Open road cruising is pleasant except on corrugations and any pockmarked dirt roads, where the rear end is less assured but it's better than you'll find with the Hilux, Ranger and Isuzu KB. As for transmissions, the sevenspeed auto works really well, changing smoothly and without too much slip. It's definitely the transmission of choice for any regular off-roaders as it takes away a lot of work load in trying conditions such as encountered in the dunes we tackled. Having said that, the six-speed manual passes muster thanks in part to a light and progressive clutch but be aware that the shift action is endowed with a longish throw and a rather deliberate movement across the gate.
Text Richard Wiley Images Various sources
Nissan claims best-in-class drive angles, as proved most convincingly in the dunes. Bestin-class payloads average out at a tonne, with 3,500kg braked towing capability. Further, you'll find all models are offered with shift-on-the-fly 4x4 plus low ratio transmission and an electronic locking rear diff. The two LE models have hill start and descent assistance. In terms of size, the Navara has resisted the growth trend and is therefore easier to handle in urban shopping centres while still having the capacity to carry five occupants, albeit those in the back will find themselves sitting rather upright. Specification levels depend on the chosen model but whichever meets your needs, you'll find a well-trimmed and comfortable cabin up-front, albeit that softtouch surfacing is hard to find. Some of the niceties include a rear air vent, powered sliding rear window, sat nav, keyless start, cruise control, Bluetooth, a host of air bags and more. Let's just say the specification levels on the new Navara are generous. It's taken Nissan rather too long to get these new models into the market which means they may have to claw back lost ground, but the Navara is well-equipped to do just that. It's somewhat understated – a Nissan trait, maybe – but there's an inherent honesty here which means that you won't find acres of chrome adorning the neatly-styled body and you won't need a harbour master's licence to park it. Any bakkie aficianodos should definitely give it consideration; especially because the engine is a strong all-rounder promising good fuel consumption of about 7.0l/100km (combined cycle). The pricing for Nissan’s range of Navara bakkies starts at around N$520,000 and that includes a warranty for six years or up to 150,000km as well as a service plan of three years or 90,000km. Diesel noises and beautiful, topless lines - does this combination work?
For today's review I could tell you all sorts of things which nobody cares about. Horsepower, airbag count; none of these boring things matter. Perhaps they would for another type of vehicle but not the new Mercedes-Benz CClass Cabriolet.
So were there any negatives? Well, I dreaded the first press of that silver start button because of the agricultural propulsion – but this turbo-diesel didn't sound as coarse as expected.
All you need to hear – because you already know it – is how achingly pretty it is.
It still seemed a bit odd in a sleek drop-top but I would equate it to Cindy Crawford's mole or David Beckham's voice. You still would.
Yours truly is not the biggest fan of Merc's new design language: blunt and aggressive faces with high-brow rear ends.
The ride wasn't always smooth over rough ground – completely normal for today's cars with their low-profile tyres.
Coated in deep metallic blue with multispoke AMG alloys and just enough bling, this C220d press car quickly changed my opinion. What a stunner.
This C220d also had a drive mode selector with TWO Sport modes, both of which made it sound and handle worse. I ignored them and simply enjoyed the car's leisurely cruising abilities.
Inside, it's the same story. Sumptuous leather, silver highlights and piano-lacquer plastics adorn a modern cabin with stateof-the-art infotainment and plenty of creature comforts – like seatbelt butlers. Rear legroom is ok for small adults on longer trips (or vice versa) and the pair of front chairs can be heated in three stages with an optional neck scarve. This chairmounted device gently blows a stream of warm air at your neck if you should decide to drop the sturdy fabric roof on a cold winter’s night.
Its nine automatic gears slot in perfectly to any speed you choose although there isn't much outright power – 125kW or 400Nm, for those who care.

The well-insulated top folds away in mere seconds and can be operated while driving at slow speeds. There's also a button which controls all four side windows. Do take notes, other drop-top manufacturers, for those are perfect cabrio credentials.

More important is the fact that the C220d claims 5L/100km and we easily got six or seven. Thanks to its 66L tank, we were comfortably headed for 1,000km range during our week of testing so this beauty can even stretch a tankfull of Nam Dollars quite nicely... This Cabriolet’s price of about N$800,000 (depending on the spec) includes a six-year unlimited mileage warranty and six-year 100,000km service plan but you probably don't care about that either. You just want it for the looks but happily, the C220d Cabriolet can do a lot more than look pretty.

HOW TO DRIVE IN FOG / MIST
YES PLEASE!
HELL NO!
• Prepare - radio, internet, signs, anything that can warn you about your route and take precautions.
• Never take the occurance of foggy or misty conditions lightly, they can lead to big accidents.
• If you encounter mist or fog, adjust your speed accordingly and be very alert to road conditions and other road users. Watch out for pedestrians!
• Do not speed or overtake in bad visibility as you may not be able to see approaching vehicles or spot potential hazards in time.
• Keep a larger following distance and generally more space between yours and other vehicles.
• DO NOT tail-gate (closely follow) other vehicles or assume that another driver can see better!
• Turn on your vehicle’s headlights or (if fitted) the fog lights.
• DO NOT use the main beam “brights” as these reduce your vision and blind other vehicles.
• If you feel that conditions are unsafe, find a safe area to pull over, well away from traffic.
• DO NOT drive with your hazard / emergency flashers as they are only for stationary use and will distract or confuse other drivers!
• Always keep your windows clean, on the outside and the inside. Consider an anti-damp product. • Turn down your music and open a window to possibly hear any potential dangers. • Use your windscreen wipers and demister.
