The first car on CMA is expected to be launched in 2017. All future Volvo cars will be built on just two fully scalable and wholly modular vehicle architectures. SPA and CMA are the cornerstone of Volvo's product renewal and growth strategy, involving the replacement of every car in its line-up in the next four years. This process started with the XC90.

MAN in Nam

Dating back to 1906, the family-owned Namibian company, Metje + Ziegler Group, officially opened a MAN sales and servicing dealership in Windhoek on 20 October 2015, to meet growing demand for both MAN and Volkswagen trucks and buses. The organisation has an extensive dealer network that includes multi-branded commercial vehicle as well as passenger car facilities. The new dealership, Autohaus Windhoek Truck and Bus, caters for both MAN and VW heavy commercial vehicles. Both new models are sold with Renault’s five-year / 150,000km warranty as well as a three-year / 45,000km service plan.

CHEVROLET budget beaters General Motors South Africa has three new limited edition Chevrolet models. The funky Spark Curve, the beefed-up UteWorking and the laidback UTESURF share one quality: added value. The Spark Curve starts life as the zesty 1.2 L, but gets more visual sparkle thanks to a set of 15-inch alloy wheels and eye-catching side decals. The interior receives mats as a standard fitment. The Spark Curve is limited to 150 units. Chevrolet’s popular Utility gets two limited edition models: the “Working” and the “Surf”. The former gets some common-sense addons which should help to add value to any business. With a sensible cab protector and rubberised load box, the UteWorking gets body decals and a set of wheel covers to stand out. A tuner/CD is also

included and the bakkie can be specified with or without air conditioning. There are just 200 units to be made. Aimed at the other extreme of the Ute buyers profile is the UTESURF, designed to have special appeal for the fun-loving individuals. The UTESURF gets a tubular stainless steel sport bar as well as a roof rack/spoiler combination which makes it simpler and safer to carry lifestyle accessories. The 250,000th Utility was built on 6 November 2015, making it one of GMSA’s biggest successes.

TOW VEHICLES

Land Rover

No fewer than four vehicles with the British green oval can schlep up to 3,500kg - the Defender, Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. And all of them look completely at home next to a dressage arena.

Jokes aside though, here’s our little list of cars that can tow big loads, arranged by number of models and total weight. Please note that we based this list on manufacturer’s figures and advise that you confirm any data with your local retailer.

Mercedes-Benz

Get yourself one of the big Mercedes-Benz SUV's (G-Class, GL/GLS or ML/GLE) which all pull 3 tonnes without breaking a sweat. Even their sedans and hatchbacks aren't bad for smaller loads. Also see page 11!

Feel free to send us comments or feedback: info@namwheels.com

Toyota

No big surprises here, the Japanese giant has lots to offer if you need to move a trailer, boat or a few trees. The big Land Cruiser 200 can tow 3.5t while the Hilux and Fortuner load depends on model and engine size.

Volkswagen

The people's car champion is the Touareg which can also haul 3.5 tonnes, while every Amarok model manages at least 2,800kg and the Kombi / T5 does 2.5 tonnes. Even their hatchbacks and sedans do well.

Audi

If you think Audis are soft targets for bankers and insurance agents, think again. Every Q7 handles 3.5 tonnes and all Q5's make it to at least 2,000kg. The TDi engines shared with VW make towing a pleasure!

So it’s finally holiday time and you’re off to the coast with your boat to visit the in-laws. Or perhaps your daughter got a new horse for Christmas? In both cases you have our sympathy.

SMALLER STUFF Can't afford one of these powerful rides? Don't dispair, neither can we. Smaller or less powerful vehicles which can tow 1,500kg+: BMW 3Series & X1, Chrysler Grand Voyager, Honda Accord & CR-V, Hyundai ix35, Infiniti Q70, Kia Sportage, Lexus IS350, Mazda BT50, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport & Triton, Nissan XTrail, Ssangyong Korando & Actyon, Subaru Forester & Outback, Tata Xenon, Toyota RAV4, Volvo 60 Range & V40 Cross Country, VW CC.

Cabriolet

Some things just shouldn't work, but do. The Audi S3 Cabriolet is one of them...

Text Hanjo Stier Images Audi South Africa

Certain combinations just sound awful - but aren't. Snoek and jam, leather and lace, symphonies and rock music, you get the idea. There are similarly strange combinations in the world of cars which, in theory, should be ghastly. We’ve just spent a week with one of them and it’s called an Audi S3 Cabriolet.

This makes them rather wobbly and indirect during spirited driving and that odd sensation is generally heightened when you do this exercise with a stiffer, more powerful car. Like an Audi S3.

There’s a tiny amount of sideways shimmying in the rear-view mirror but other than that, it feels rock solid. Even over nasty ridges and speed bumps. The next thing to strike me in a pleasing way was its potent but smooth power delivery, a major factor which puts a twisting effect on roofless cars.

We shouldn’t have been worried. The company with four shiny rings has been building convertibles The Audi A3 is a premium for many years and thus hatchback available with knows a thing or five about Not so the S3 Cabriolet – thanks to the silky sixtwo or four doors and, in vehicular solidity. speed S-tronic dual-clutch one of its most extreme forms, a 210kW (286hp) They also have a lot of jolly automatic transmission beast of an engine. Our test car’s optional 18inch, 225/40R18 wheels tried their hardest but the ride was still acceptable for most occupants. Fast and successive road undulations can briefly lift you out of the firm and supportive sports seats but, unless you drive like a bandit, the car remains composed and true to your projected path. With the top down, wind buffeting really sets in from 80km/h onwards but you can order an optional deflector to combat this. The Audi S3 Cabriolet also has a few features which all convertibles should have – please take notes, other car manufacturers – like a roof which operates at speeds up to 50km/h and a button which commands all four side windows.

In a late and shameless act of desperation, we took this headless rocket on an extensive Sunday drive, across vastly differing As you can deduct from all roads and many mountain this, the cabrio didn’t put a passes, just to find tangible single wheel wrong; and it faults. just got better. Bakkies

KB

Isuzu has spruced up its KB and upped the bakkie stakes...

The bakkie war is set to become more intense following Isuzu's introduction of a number of enhancements, new features as well as the addition of three new models to expand and strengthen its popular range of KB single- and double-cabs. The three new models are a KB250 Fleetside Extended Cab, a KB250 Fleetside Double Cab and top-of-the-range KB300 LX Double Cab 4x4 with automatic transmission. Three additions extend the range to 18 models with three body types - single, extended and double cab. It's a popular boast in this segment of the market to describe bakkies as 'car-like' and high standards have been set by the likes of Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger and double cabs, in particular, have become more like conventional passenger vehicles in terms of cabin comfort, ride quality, driver aids and safety. The S.A.-built KB has a strong reputation for being tough and reliable workhorses but the addition of a higher-specced auto version certainly moves it firmly into the comfortable, carlike category as well. At the media launch of the revamped KB range, I spent most of the time at the wheel of this pleasant flagship and although I am not by nature a bakkie fan, I was pleasantly surprised by its classy living quarters, fancy onboard kit and the way it behaved on stretches of sandy, rocky tracks, back roads and tarred motorways. Like all bakkies it still feels a little bouncy and tail-end loose but this will no doubt improve considerably with a bit of weight on the back (the vehicles at the Media launch were all unloaded). This smooth five-speed auto shifter will certainly find favour with the segment of the market that uses double cabs for fun rather than work. The auto transmission is a good match for the 3.0-litre DTEQ

turbo-diesel under its hood and the combination works well, whether the going gets rough or cruising along on the motorway. In spite of its lively 130kW / 380Nm output Isuzu claims a combined fuel consumption of 7.9 litres per 100km. Fuel consumption across the range varies from 7.7L/100km to 8L/100km (like all fuel consumption figures claimed by manufacturers, these are achieved in perfect laboratory conditions and should not be regarded as realistic usage). New features are particularly noticeable in the double and extended derivatives where a new standard feature is a class-leading touch screen infotainment system with navigation, internet, WiFi, and smartphone integration. The screen in question - a highdefinition 1080p TFT unit with a generous 6.5-inch dimension also acts as the display when browsing, or when using the DVD player. It integrates with another new standout feature on all double Cab KB’s: a Rear Park Assist reversing camera, which is not only convenient when backing up - especially when hitching a trailer - but is also a valuable safety feature. A passive entry and start system (PESS) is a keyless entry with Start/Stop ignition button which is now also standard on all LX-grade models with the four-door body style. Leather is now also an option on these derivatives. All double cab KB’s are now armed with LED daytime running lights (replacing the fog lamps), and LED technology incorporated in the rear clusters. Lower down the pecking order are the Fleetside worker bees operating in a segment where reliability, load-carrying and low operating costs are more important than cabin comforts but even though they are sans the real fancies they all have a radio / CD with Bluetooth.

Not that far behind the power outputs of the three-litre KB’s are two models powered by an upgraded, high output version of the 2.5-litre DTEQ direct injection common-rail turbodiesel that kicks out 100kW and 320Nm. The improved torque enables the payload of the single cab Fleetside model to increase to a class-leading 1,221 kilograms. In the crucial field of safety and occupant protection all the LE and LX models (as well as the two new Fleetside models) now have electronic stability control (ESC) and by year-end (when this safety feature is added to the Fleetside single cabs) all KB’s except for a pair of base specification single cabs will be equipped with ESC. ESC uses a network of sensors to determine the yaw angle of the vehicle - in other words, whether it is over-steering or under-steering, and commands the bakkie’s braking hardware and engine management to intervene individually or in tandem. The KB range now has a fullhouse of the safety features not so long ago associated with smart sedans. As well as the new stability / traction control pairing, the triumvirate of ABS, EBD and EBA covers all models with the exception of 2.5 LEED (Low pressure turbo) models. The two base models now have a height-adjustable steering column, and the LE versions also have cruise control. LX single and Extended Cabs, and all LE models look and feel much more upmarket thanks to smarter fabric in the living quarters. Already a strong player in the bakkie segment, the spruced up KB is sure to increase its grip on this market. All vehicles come with a fiveyear / 120,000km warranty and roadside assistance as well as a service plan for five-years or 90,000km .

Passat

H Volkswagen’s brand-new Passat is blessed with perfect timing...

Recent events have shoved the giant car maker Volkswagen onto its back feet but the colossus is using this situation to leap up with new focus and new products.

You’ll have to wait for the new A4 to get this level of top-class safety and assistance systems, intuitive infotainment and the HDquality instrument cluster.

Although it’s probably coincidence, their timing couldn’t have been better to introduce the new-generation Passat in southern Africa.

Optional extras include a full three-zone climate control with rear settings, adjustable heads-up display and the “Discover Pro” navigation with an 8-inch VGA screen and 10Gb hard disk drive.

You may think that the Passat is an old man’s car or sales disaster which explains why Volkswagen is so desperate to destroy any of those connotations. Yes, the older models weren’t particularly exciting and yes, they never inhabited our country in great numbers but VWSA alleges that “this model should change that.” The Passat is one of Volkswagen’s most successful models ever, also in new-money China. Local retailers are banking on this new (B8) model’s more executive look and premium feel to capture market share from the perpetual German trio of Audi, BMW and Mercedes in the (increasingly premium) Bsegment sedan. Spearheaded by a marketing campaign called “Think New”, Passat is based on the VW group’s MQB modular platform. With only the engine position fixed, all its dimensions were maximized for comfort and space, resulting in a lower bonnet, lower roof height / line and less front overhang than its predecessor. Remarkably, the new sedan is shorter and lower but boasts an increased wheelbase and lighter, tighter bodies (up to 85kg less than before). This provides occupants with better cabin space and comfort levels, as well as improved acoustics and increased luggage capacity (up 20L to 479L). The car’s new looks will play a big part in capturing buyers and I believe that VW got it right. Going from a wide face and powerful stance at the front, the “Tornado Line” sculpted profile crease and trademark VW C-pillar lead to strong rear shoulders and distinctive tail lights, all wrapped in crisp lines and elegant proportions. Add the high-quality interior and delicate chrome detailing (inside and out) to end up with a sedan that’s probably most like its own second cousin, the Audi A4.

Demo Passat available for test drives

This system features 3D navigation, multiuser Bluetooth connectivity, voice control and is Apple Car Play and Android Auto ready. Other add-ons (depending on the model) include R-Line goodies and wheels as well as leather trim, clever seats, glass sunroof, ambient lighting, keyless access, fold-away tow-bar, adaptive cruise control, rear-view camera with park pilot and a thumping-great 700 Watt DynAudio sound system including subwoofer. The line-up includes 1.4 TSi 110kW Manual (N$381,700) or DSG (N$402,100), 1.8 TSi 132kW DSG (N$447,100) and 2.0 TSi 162kW DSG (N$478,600) with TDi models expected to make an entrance in 2016. VW includes a 3-year/120,000km warranty and a 5-year/100,000km AutoMotion Plan with the purchase of every Passat. As for driving this car, I can honestly state that interested buyers need not travel more than a few hundred meters to discover that the new generation Passat is as comfortable, sophisticated and responsive as its maker alleges. It’s smoother than a 3-Series, softer than a CClass and more comfortable than an A4. A new multi-mode response system is standard across the range and adapts to the driver’s inputs, switching between modes if need be. On the Eastern Cape launch route, I made sure to cycle through the frugal “Eco”, normal “Comfort”, eager “Sport” and flexible “Individual” settings to test their effects. While every mode had its own appeal, I always detected an underlying smoothness and solidity to this car’s behaviour – even when fitted with 18-inch R-Line alloys. This excellence wasn’t just picked up by yours truly; the new Passat recently won a landslide first place in the 2015 European Car of the Year competition.

Honda SPRINT REVIEW

SAFETY TIPS

Dangers of mobile phone use while driving

Some facts on the CR-V: The Honda CR-V has been around for almost 20 years and happily it’s a car that our market carried almost from the start. With inoffensive looks, no-nonsense tech and clever interiors, the CR-V not only sold very well but also commands some impressive resale values. Always available as a petrol four-cylinder with the odd turbo-Diesel in between, this range has just received a mild facelift and new toys. Choose between a 2L auto or manual in two trim levels or a 2.4 allwheel-drive automatic; also in two spec levels. We tested the N$409,900 Elegance 2.0. More info: Some say CR-V is an acronym for “Compact Recreational Vehicle”, which I don’t doubt. While it’s not the smallest vehicle around, it certainly drives and feels like

something more compact. As with most modern Hondas, the interior’s versatility is simply gobsmacking. Like its predecessor, this car can open its rear doors to almost 90 degrees and fold its 60/40 split rear seats completely flat. Honda gives you two options to do this: a chord next to the seat(s) or handles in the cargo area. In both cases you only need one hand to start the collapse; same goes for the two-stage reverse process. What he said: The other day an acquaintance approached me for some car advice. At first cringing through the obligatory “so what do you think of…” my face instantly lit up when they concluded with “a Honda CR-V?” This is one of those no-brainer cars, no matter its spec or price. “Go for it” I said.

This new face really suits the car; brings it up to date. The interior is still fantastic with that high gear lever position and loads of storage options. Honda’s new touch-screen infotainment system is quite easy to use – Bluetooth finally connects when asked to – but it looks a little foreign and doesn’t have a volume knob; only buttons. What she said: I love the CRV’s spacious interior. From ample leg and head room (no matter where you’re seated) to the cavernous boot which is perfect for a shopping trip with the girls or school bags and kiddie paraphernalia if you’re in the family way. The ride is super comfy. This car just fits a person well. No fiddling or discomfort, all the right seat position to height ratios and an easy drive all together.

My only complaint is that I found the lower gear ratios to be a bit ‘pap’ and, given the typical poor torque offering from Honda, you do find yourself changing down a lot in town or hill driving. You will also need to be a bit careful when pulling away in first gear or reversing up an incline, you’ll need a bit more gas than you might like. Other than that, a really fantastic drive. Why you will want one: Exceptional versatility and Japanese reliability blended into a good SUV. These naturally-aspirated CR-V’s won’t match turbodiesels (or turbo-petrols) for power or economy but they’ll probably out-last any rivals and give them a bloody nose in the second-hand yards, too.

Cellphones are an extremely dangerous distraction for the driver of a moving vehicle because they reduce or stunt the reaction times crucial for negotiating traffic. Even more dangerous than phoning while driving is texting (or browsing) on a mobile phone while behind the wheel. The main causes of accidents while using a mobile phone include loss of the driver’s ability to recognise potential dangers, maintain their speed and direction, or keeping safe following distances.

A good driver should employ constant visual searches in any road situation and the use of a mobile phone seriously diminishes this ability - some studies allege that the risk of a collision is up to four times higher than normal. Here are a few tips for those of us who have to communicate while on the move: • Stop the vehicle in a safe spot if you need to phone or text. • If possible, ask a passenger to answer calls or messages on your behalf. • WAIT until you get to your destination!

1.6 million crashes a year in the U.S. caused by using a mobile phone texting while driving is

6 times more dangerous than drunk driving

85 metres distance travelled at 60km/h when texting for five seconds...

THE GL-WHAT?

LAUNCH REPORT

Confused? Don't worry, we also took a while to grasp what is going on here.

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz renamed most of their off-road vehicles, the Geländewagen lends its first letter (G) to all other off-roady Mercs.

GLC

G-Class - name unchanged The original, boxy, robust and jolly expensive off-roader.

Text Dr Hans Heese Images Various sources

GLS

CUSTOM BUMPERS

KNOWLEDGE: OFF-ROAD ACCESSORIES

Are they worth the investment?

Benefits We tried to be all diplomatic about this but there’s mostly (only) one reason why someone would fit one of these to their vehicle - they look freakin’ awesome! Other, less visual benefits of having one bolted to your fourwheel-drive vehicle usually include an improved approach angle and better low-speed protection.

Bolt-ons Another nifty feature of these is that they come (or can be customised to carry) features like bull bar, lights, winch, recovery and jacking points - all in one bumper!

Caution A word of warning though - most modern 4x4's have airbags which rely on sensors in (or near) the front bumper. By changing the structure of the bumper, you may be at risk of the airbags not deploying correctly! Fitting a different bumper may also alter the crumple zone of your vehicle and put you (and others) at risk of injury in a potential crash. Check with your car’s manufacturer or an approved fitment centre to see if this may be the case.

BEACH Clean-Up

H Henties Bay was just the starting point for this amazing local initiative...

Namibia is undoubtedly one of the When was that? Where do you clean?

Unfortunately, some foul elements seem to think that the world is their garbage can and in Namibia it’s no more evident than at the beautiful coastline. One local hero Johan Mostert had enough of this...

How did this start? I go to Henties Bay at least twice a month and I was sitting on the beach with a friend of mine; near “Grys Duintjie”. We had a few beers and noticed all the paper and trash flying around on the beach. That’s when I said “Listen, I’m gonna start cleaning the beach!” Upon my return to Windhoek I spoke to a few suppliers and every single on was immediately on board, also because I don’t charge a lot of money for this.

We’re going to start again this year around the 15th of December, just before the main rush of holiday makers. For the first three days we’ll do Henties Bay town itself, which also includes Omdel. Then we focus on the beach front, which will be the “North Dune”, “South Dune” and the central part. A few days after that, we start at Mile 108 and work our way down, from the Ugab River mouth till Wlotzka’s Baken - which is about 140km of beach. We’d also like to include Langstrand this year.

What happens to the trash?

No, no! I often call up my regulars at short notice and clean the beach during a quick weekend visit.

In the streets we find cans, plastic bags, bottles and other rubbish. After New Year’s parties we find anything from cameras and cell phones to braai grids and booze. It’s important to note that about half the stuff we find on the beach appears to have been washed up from the sea - foreign languages on the packaging give it away...

We regularly meet up with the guys So Henties is the cleanest from the municipality and they’re town over Christmas? very willing to help! I’ve also built a brand-new trailer for this year, previously we used a sponsor’s trailer but there were a few things I wanted to improve. My new trailer has the correct track for driving on the beach, as well as steps for my guys to stand on.

MAIN SPONSORS

Your sponsors?

Yes, companies buy space on my vehicles or trailers and the money covers our fuel, wages, etc. Other sponsors provide us with meals, sweets and refreshments for the breaks we take between cleaning. We’re not after profit, nor do I have any more advertising space to sell at this time. One Landy is entirely sponsored by Nedbank’s Go Green Fund. It’s a great position to be in And the vehicles? I’ve got a trusted group of people I like to use. I also contacted the secondary school in Henties Bay and asked for 15 to 20 kids to help us out - especially the ones who don’t go away on holiday. Instead of being bored, they help us clean the seaside and we pay them per bag of trash. The kids are excluded from our New Year’s clean-up because we find alcohol, knives and other adult things! My parents also help out as they think it’s a very noble cause. My Dad “Oupa” brings his Toyota Hilux to join my fleet of Defenders and off-road trailers.

Mini

(en eie ervarings)

H Meer as vyftig jaar gelede is die oorspronklike Mini bekendgestel.
