Toyota South Africa Motors stood out in the 2016 Vehicle Quality Survey by Ipsos with a total of twelve gold awards; namely five in the passenger category and seven more in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) category. This once again demonstrates Toyota's true commitment to quality. The Hilux was certainly a hero for Toyota in the Ipsos survey by achieving the best quality score for the Petrol Single Cab.

The new Volkswagen Passat range has been extended with the introduction of the 2.0 TDI engine. Until recently the new Passat was only offered with petrol engines. The 130kW 2.0 TDI completes the model range of the eighth generation Passat. Its new four-cylinder 1,968cc engine is compact, lightweight and fuel-efficient, and it was designed to deliver great fuel economy as well as sporty performance.

HINO South Africa, one of our neighbouring country's leading truck manufacturers, recently sponsored the first joint “Brake and Tyre Watch” event which was attended by truck operators, Hino dealers and a large number of Hino S.A. staff. It certainly proved an eyeopener for all who those who were at Donkerhoek traffic control centre, near Pretoria Gauteng, for that informative road safety check.

As part of the BMW Group’s centenary celebrations BMW South Africa refurbished two of its classics, the legendary M1 and S.A.-exclusive 333i. The company always valued the preservation of its brand heritage, thus it purchased the BMW M1 from a customer in the mid 1980s and used the vehicle as part of its classic collection. The car was later joined by an E23 BMW 745i, E28 BMW M5, E30 BMW 333i and 325iS.

Montecasino, Opel and elite guests buckled up for the longest Opel ADAM convoy in South Africa. A 31 car convoy drove from the Williams Hunt Fourways dealership in Cedar Square Fourways to Montecasino, as part of the latest promotion Monte Madness. The promotion kicked off on the 4th of November with an Opel ADAM being given away every day for 31 days with a total value of over R7 million!

Nissan recently introduced its new drive system called ePOWER. It marks the first time that this technology is available for consumers, a significant milestone in the electrification strategy under Nissan Intelligent Mobility. e-POWER borrows from the EV technology perfected in the Nissan LEAF but adds a small petrol engine to charge the battery when necessary, eliminating the need for an external charger.

Explorer Mike Horn set sail to start the longest leg of his Pole2Pole expedition yet, the crossing of Antarctica. Mike will cover over 7,000km while crossing the continent, the South Pole only being the halfway stop. Aboard his sailing vessel, the Pangaea, Mike and his crew spent two months in Cape Town preparing and working on some of Pole2Pole's socioenvironmental projects. NamWheels report out soon!

General Motors S.A. started delivering a facelifted version of the sixth generation Isuzu KB to approved GM dealers in Southern Africa. The 2016 Isuzu KB boasts some styling changes to the front fascia and rear tailgate as well as a new instrument gauge cluster in the cabin. Other major changes for the 2016 KB are its new projector headlamps with LED day time running lights and new alloy wheels (18" for LX models), a new rearview camera (on LX double cabs), and the new instrument cluster’s design with improved functionality and gear shift indicator for manual models.

Tata has introduced a limited edition derivative of its Indica hatchback as an added-value offering. The new model, known as the Indica Flash, is based on the Tata Indica LGi, with several distinguishing features and significant additions to the list of standard equipment. The new Tata Indica Flash is specified well above the norm (or standard specification of its main competitors) in the market. At a price of about N$135,000 it is only N$6,000 higher than the standard Indica, while the value of those added features and its equipment far exceeds that amount.

The Unimog Prototype One completed its first test drive on 9 October 1946. Chief designer Mr. Heinrich Rö ßler tested the prototype without a bonnet and while it was fully laden with wood, on rough forest roads. The Unimog’s prehistory is closely linked to the difficult post-war period. In 1945 and 1946, there was a dire lack of food. It was this situation that gave Mr. Albert Friedrich, who for many years was head of aircraft engine development at Daimler-Benz AG, his idea of an agricultural and rugged motorised vehicle which should help to increase agricultural productivity.

The latest version of Ford's SYNC communications and entertainment system is set to make its Southern African debut quite soon when the high-tech new SYNC ® 3 is launched in Kuga, Mustang, Ranger and Everest. Ford SYNC® already enables drivers of 15-million vehicles worldwide to voice-activate essential in-car features like phone or multimedia. The system has also made a significant contribution to safety, simply by enabling drivers to remain focused on the road while accessing the system’s range of available communication and media features.

Jaguar Land Rover revealed its first electric vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Jaguar I-PACE Concept was shown alongside the all-new Land Rover Discovery. Jaguar Land Rover is working towards a clean future, with ultra-clean diesel and petrol engines, B.E.V.s, P.H.E.V.s and M.H.E.V.s all in its strategic plans. By the year 2020, J.L.R. will offer customers the option of electrification on half of all its new cars, C.E.O. Dr Ralf Speth confirmed. The Jaguar I-PACE Concept is an electric fiveseat performance S.U.V. with supercar styling, sports car performance and S.U.V. space.

HONDA launches new BR-V Honda (Motor South Africa) has just added a third new model to its highly regarded range of sport utility vehicles (S.U.V.s). This new Honda BR-V joins the established CR-V and the popular HR-V, introduced in South Africa last year. While instantly recognisable as a member of the Honda family, the new BR-V features bold, distinctive styling and a sporty, agile appearance,

linked to the raised stance and rugged appeal expected of a SUV. Its front and rear bumper garnishes, roof rails and 16inch wheels are key visual elements, while the striking front grille, with its bold, chrome-embellished crossbar, prominent Honda logo and streamlined headlights, endow the new BR-V with a distinctive personality that is unmistakably Honda.

Southern Africa's top selling passenger model, the Polo Vivo, has been rejuvenated with the addition of a striking special edition, Storm. The special edition Storm, on sale now, is based on the 1.4i Trendline Vivo (63kW) hatch variant. It differentiates itself from other derivatives by a set of front fog lights with chrome surrounds, metallic black 15inch Tosa alloys, glossy black side mirrors and black decals on the side. TOYOTA Hilux SRX models Toyota just introduced the upgraded Hilux SRX models. The most significant change is from the previous 'narrow- body' to the new 'wide-body' construction. The Hilux SRX now stands wider, taller and more prominent. The change brings integrated over-fenders (as on Raider models) paired with a wider, front bumper design.

This adds 55mm to the width of SRX derivatives. The Xtracab models already boast the 'wide-body' construction, as such all three body shapes now share the same exterior width dimension. The exterior mirrors have inherited turn signal lamps, whilst retaining the durable ‘matte black’ treatment and electric adjustment.

Hyundai F has added two Turbo-Diesel engines to the striking Tucson. We give you all the details.

Hyundai’s new Tucson has been making waves since it arrived in our market around March of this year. Besides its somewhat perplexing name change from Tucson to ix35 and back to Tucson again for this third generation S.U.V., it has also garnered a lot of praise from the local media. Chicks dig it. No really, they do. South Africa’s “Women on Wheels” awarded the Tucson their coveted 2016 Car of the Year award. Dudes seem to be smitten as well, judging by the equally favorable comments of the men-folk at the recent Hyundai launch. This event was held to introduce a pair of important newcomers to the range – turbo-diesel engines. Good news for Hyundai and not so much for their competitors as the Korean brand was recently voted 35th best (globally) with 6th place in the automotive list and 5th in terms of volume.

Since March of this year, South African sales figures also show a sterling effort – 20% share in the Tucson's market segment which climbs a further 2.6% with fleet sales. Back to the two new turbo-diesel motors though and first up is a 2litre four-cylinder (carried over from the ix35) with respectable maximum outputs of 131kW and 400Nm.

How much is 2,000 bar? A lot. So much, in fact, that this engine achieves the highly coveted Euro 6 emissions standard. Its outright power of 85kW may be less than that of its senior 2L counterpart but this 1.7 produces up to 280Nm of torque from just 1,250rpm. That's a smidgen over idle!

Although its emissions may only conform to Euro 2 standards, this trusty unit is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and it should become any suburban parent's darling.

Hyundai let us loose with a whole fleet of their 1.7L Tucsons and I teamed up with two co-drivers to give the newcomer a thorough test on highways, congested city traffic and a fair bit of dirt road.

A bigger novelty is self-igniting engine number two in the shape of a very advanced 1.7-litre fourcylinder turbo-diesel motor with new-age trickery like exhaust gas recirculation, intelligent valve lift control, lightweight construction as well as some state-of-the-art fuel injectors which are capable of producing pressures up to 2,000 bar.

Currently available with a sixspeed manual gearbox and frontwheel-drive, we were all suitably impressed by the little motor.

THE NEW HYUNDAI H-1

Top (sixth) gear clocks 2,000rpm at 120km/h but isn't suitable for speeds under 80km/h. All three of us deliberately drove in high gears at slow road speeds to test Hyundai's torque claim.

While its power output is not earth-moving, the new engine's response from just 1,250rpm is highly impressive – smooth and quite linear. Passenger space and comfort is commendable, the ride is pretty acceptable too as long as you stay away from huge wheels. The two-litre Diesel Tucson is available in Elite trim while the 1.7-litre comes with Executive specifications which include the usual powered -this and autothat, pleather, as well as multiple driver aids. The Korean S.U.V.’s active and passive safety arsenal includes six airbags, some ISO-FIX child seat anchors, ABS brakes with VSC and ESC stability control. You also get blind-spot assist, a rear cross-traffic alert (which warns you of approaching danger when reversing out of a confined space), hill start assistant and a five-star EuroNCAP (crash test) rating.

Other standard items fitted to this S.U.V. include climate and cruise control, Bluetooth, rearview camera as well as a huge panoramic sunroof (Elite model only). Any potential owner may also order an aftermarket eight-inch touch-screen media and sat-nav system which seamlessly fits into the vehicle's dashboard. Colour and wheel choices get a bit tricky as the Tucson is built at two different factories – the older 2litre auto’ in Korea and the superclean 1.7 manual in the Czech Republic. This will also affect one or two interior specifications but at least the default paint colour choices like whites, silvers and greys are available from both locations. Prices for the 1.7L start at about N$461,000, while the cost of an R2.0 Elite Auto will be announced later. Petrol models cost between N$382,000 (2.0 Premium M) and N$540,000 (1.6TGDi DCT AWD).

All box-fresh Hyundai Tucsons are delivered with a five-year 150,000km warranty (with two additional years and an extra 50,000km for the drive-train) as well as five years or 90,000km worth of service plan. Compared to main rivals, the new turbo-diesel models are in the ballpark for pricing with a few niceties and extra features here or there. If one considers the new Tucson's well-received styling and all the technical updates, Hyundai most certainly has a strong contender on its hands; that huge warranty and the service plan should seal the deal. Toyota Hilux 26% of votes

No huge surprise here, the Hilux is one of Namibia’s favourite vehicles because of its great versatility, excellent reliability and dealer count. The new model features daring new looks and crucial drive-train updates.

Audi A4 and VW Tiguan 12.5% each

We have a tie! Happily these two (and No.3) come from the same stable so the VW Group products can also claim to be well-received with Namibians. The updated A4 is superbly refined, the brand-new Tiguan even more so.

VW Golf GTi Clubsport 10% of votes

In solid third place lies the limited-edition Golf GTi Clubsport, proving that Namibians like a fast car. While this model may be rather exclusive, its popularity explains why 70% of all Golf sales in southern Africa are GTi’s.

Isuzu KB Facelift 8% of votes

Who claimed that South Africa is a “bakkie country”? Well, they should visit their northwestern neighbour because plainly, we are just as crazy about a versatile workhorse with leisure capabilities.

Honda Civic Type R 7% of votes

Just missing out on fourth spot is one of the hottest machines to have come from Honda. Although not limited in numbers, this hatch is even wilder than the GTi in third place. We do like powerful cars in Namibia, don’t we?

powerful and sophisticated - the BMW 440i made us nostalgic...

Between my mid to early eighties automotive recollections of colourful Mercedes’, a Series 3 Landy, Diesel Golf and a Venter trailer with brown vinyl top, there shimmers my aunt's white 323i Coupé ; complete with BMW six-pot hum.

Top gear around 120km/h puts no more than 2,000rpm on the dial and thanks to 450Nm of torque, there's no real need for kick-downs. The various drive modes can be useful but we award its default “Comfort” the best balance for everyday driving. Sport Plus is great for hard and fidgety hooliganism while Eco Pro retards the 440i's spirit and considerable thirst. Drive it nicely and you may dive under 10L/100km. Give it horns and you certainly won't.

Although this 440 could be seen as the 323's spiritual successor, its encounter with my carloving uncle is a pure but happy coincidence. We have a meeting with expert restorers for one of his latest project cars, and the 240kW BMW is perfect for our lengthy drive down sweeping B-roads to a distant town.

There's nothing like a few hours between rusty wrecks and charming classics to reset your perception of contemporary cars. Our hosts may not have been fans of modern vehicles but did acknowledge that this new BMW 4-Series possesses a tasteful mix of elegant lines and sporty, interesting design details.

After an immediate agreement that the turbopetrol six-cylinder sounds as good as it should, we also concur something else while rumbling over suburban streets – the 440i errs on the side of uncomfortable. Most likely the fault of “M-Sport” goodies fitted to this car... we both wish for a slightly more lenient ride.

Its interior is just as stylish with reasonably intuitive controls and some wonderful BMW hallmarks. Barring the strange gear lever and updated, sophisticated iDrive system, my uncle approved of the classic BMW instruments and driver-focused dashboard curve; which their white 323i also had. The slightly cramped rear quarters? “Typical coupé trait.”

Shortly after this conclusion, we merge onto a dual-lane highway and I finally get the chance to open the taps completely. With lightning response and a bewitching combination of growls and fizzing, the 3-litre turbo-charged engine repeatedly chases 7,000rpm through its equally-eager eight-speed gearbox. 120km/h comes up in no time and we both take delight in slower traffic as it grants us more opportunities for repeating this orchestral performance. At some point we discuss if the car is possibly overpowered but as it cruises (or commutes) as calmly and quietly as you wish, that's simply a matter of opinion.

A few things we establish even before reaching our destination is that the monster engine's torque is probably its most impressive feature, delivered through that superb eight-slot 'box in perfect harmony.

It's one of the few vehicles that bring seller's remorse to my uncle's voice. “We should have kept that little Bee Emm… not only was it great to drive but it would also be worth something today” he grumbles while carefully dropping into the passenger seat of my Estoril Blue BMW 440i Coupé press car.

Most buyers would choose the optional extra because its harder suspension and 19-inch wheels suit the powerful two-door, while all the cosmetic enhancements included in this N$32,000 option raise the coupé 's street cred. Uncle Dearest is quite happy to learn that the package is not mandatory and smaller wheels are available.

The second half of our journey included an impromptu stop at a wine farm where the 445L boot easily swallowed almost a dozen cases of the cellar’s finest. Other noteworthy statistics include a 60L fuel tank, (limited) 250km/h top speed and 0-100km/h in five seconds. Our GPS tests confirm that. Pricing starts at N$840,000 and seems openended when you delve into BMW's options bin. I'd done a bit of research and my passenger was interested to hear about the many luxury and convenience gadgets on offer. Even more so, a choice of 16 paint hues, 17 leather and 13 trim combinations or 14 wheel designs between 17 and 19 inches. By the time I pulled carefully into the steep driveway (4-Series' only have 130mm ground clearance) we settled on the final statement for this review. Here goes: the BMW 440i Coupe is graceful and stylish, relatively exclusive and practical, quite fast and exciting but too hard with the M-Pack. And if you have one, don't sell it after a few years!

What you need to know: The new Renault Captur is a reasonably fresh sight on our roads, based on the compact Clio hatchback and squarely aimed at the mushrooming (B-segment) compact S.U.V. market. Other car makers offer similar products with Nissan’s weird Juke and the odd Ford Ecoboost riding on small hatchback platforms.

Some more facts: Sunsetspecific details are dark 17inch alloys, Diamond Black paint and “Sunset Orange” highlights for the roof and exterior mirrors. Even more orange zest can be found on the seats, air vents, centre console and front seat map pockets with lumo-orange string that kids can use to drive their 'rentals mad.

Where we went: The office, home, some friends, a few longer trips and the mall’s parking lot - natural compact SUV hunting grounds. While the pearl black paint attracts dirt and heat, it looks superb combined with bright orange and gets plenty of attention. By the end of our tests, every test-driver approved of the Sunset.

This “Sunset” Captur model is a limited edition of 100 models, built to celebrate the arrival of Renault's 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine to this range. It joins the tiny but efficient 900cc and 1.2-litre turbo-petrol motors of other Captur models which have, since its introduction in May 2015, pushed this Renault model into second spot for S.A. sales in its segment.

The 1.5 dCi is Renault's bestselling engine worldwide, proving its SUV credentials by doing duty in the more rugged Duster.

Underneath its striking coat, the new Captur Sunset hides a comfy ride and super-light controls with good feedback.

Its 66kW arrive in a relatively rev-happy fashion while the 220Nm provide decent shove from 1,750rpm. Keep it in the right gear (of five) and it pulls well. We clocked 0-100 in 12 seconds; Renault claims 13.1.

Watch out for: The price of around N$303,000 is a few grand more than the (now available) 1.5 dCi Dynamique model. The regular Captur will not have these bespoke goodies but it offers a wider range of colours – including a bright orange. The Renault after-sales reputation may be a bit dented so check out your dealer's workshop and CSI!

Why you'll want one: For starters, a great little turbodiesel engine in a modern, practical SUV with 170mm of ground clearance and a 377L Road holding is on par for boot – expandable to 1,235L. this class, fuel consumption isn't. Renault lays claim to The Sunset limited edition 3.6L/100km but in the real bits look fantastic but you'll world we still saw sub-fives. do just as well with a regular With a 45L tank, that means 1.5 dCi Dynamique model. 1,000km per tank is quite And it falls below the CO2 tax threshold… doable...
