NEWS & NEW MODELS Back to the DeLorean

The DMC-12, that famous car from the "Back to the Future" movies of the 1980's may be making a comeback... DeLorean Motor from Texas U.S.A. owns a lot of the car’s original tooling and parts, and has been refurbishing old DeLoreans for years. Thanks to new laws, they can now start building replicas of the DMC-12 which was first produced in 1982 and made it to a total of about 9,000 cars.

Bridgestone 4x4 Challenge After four qualifying and five elimination events, the finale of the 2015 Bridgestone Club Challenge was held at the Four Wheel Drive Club of South Africa's Base 4 near the Hennops River in November. With teams ranked by points earned on elimination events, starting order was reversed for the series decider, with top-ranked teams setting off last. The 30 finalists tackled an extremely demanding trail put together by route master, Sakkie Coetzee, and a new champion was crowned as Danie and son Daniel Tait took the laurels in their Suzuki SJ413 with a nearfaultless performance.

Rosslyn builds X3

The BMW Group reaffirmed its long term commitment to South Africa by investing R6 billion at its Rosslyn Plant in Pretoria in coming years. This investment will enable Rosslyn to produce the next generation X3, which will be sold locally and exported. Production will replace the 3 Series Sedan, which will be allocated to other plants within the BMW production network.

Chevy helps the Toy Run The Chevrolet Ute Force once again lent their support to the annual Toy Run that was held at the Benoni Sports ground on Sunday 29 November last year. Each year a diverse group of bikers from across Gauteng meet at designated points in the North, South, East and West of the Province to collect as many toys, toiletries and stationary as possible for underprivileged children. Beneficiaries of these goodies are the children from various children's homes, community crèches, feeding schemes and other welfare organisations across the province in South Africa.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS

Mitsubishi’s new direction

Mitsubishi Motors is charting a new course that will see the introduction of a more focused range of SUV and SUT models with hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and selfdriving technologies. The new direction follows worldwide research, which revealed Mitsubishi drivers' requests for dual purpose vehicles that have the quality, technology and that all-road prowess Mitsubishi is known for, but live comfortably in an urban jungle. The first results of this are the all-new Triton Sport and the next-generation Pajero Sport, which are expected in South Africa by the middle of 2016.

Opel’s Corsa is the Best

The exciting new Opel Corsa won the Award in the Best Budget Buy segment by South Africa's biggest newspaper, The Star. It surpassed five competitor vehicles to claim top spot. The Corsa was awarded for its impressive build quality as well as its more refined and roomy cabin for a B-segment hatchback vehicle, according to Independent Media's team of motoring journalists.

Toyota leads

60 years in the motor trade! “I’ve been going to the office for 60 years but I have never worked for a day in my life. I enjoyed every single day.” These are the words of Walter Martin (80), who retired after sixty years of selling General Motors vehicles on the West Rand at his family dealership, Tommy Martin. Martin loved his work so much that he often joked by telling staff he has a coffin at the office in case they needed to carry him out. Tommy Martin started as a service station in 1935 by the late Thomas Walter Martin.

In 1936 the garage turned into Tommy Martin's Motors and was awarded a General Motors franchise. Martin started at the family business in 1954 after leaving school. His first position was selling spare parts behind the counter before moving into vehicle sales under the then sales manager. After working at the company for five years Martin's father passed away in 1959. His mother, Gretha took over the business until Martin was called upon to steer the ship ten years later.

Toyota led the way in 2015 despite S.A. new vehicle sales recording yet another dip. In its 36th straight year as the market leader, Toyota (including Lexus and Hino) beat economic conditions to achieve 123,028 new-vehicle registrations. It's worth noting that since 2011, Toyota has successively increased market share and now holds a commanding 19,9% average market share. Toyota also finished the year on a high in December with 9,117 vehicles, placing it in pole position once again. Reflecting on the annual sales performance, Hilux with a total sales tally of 35,684 units for 2015 was yet again crowned as the nation's most popular vehicle.

Heritage 90 Land Rover celebrated 68 years of history on February 29th as the last of the current Defenders left its Solihull production facility. To mark the occasion Land Rover invited more than 700 current and former Solihull employees involved in the production of Series Land Rover and Defender vehicles to see and drive some of the most important vehicles from its history. These included the first preproduction ‘Huey’ Series One Land Rover as well as the last vehicle off the production line, a Defender 90 Heritage Soft Top.

Peugeot wins the Dakar Rally 26 years after its previous success on the epic event, Peugeot has won the Dakar Rally for the fifth time. The two-wheel drive Peugeot 2008 DKR triumphed with its most illustrious crew on the event: Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret. • Peugeot won the Dakar on just its second participation in the South American event. • The Peugeot 2008 DKRs claimed nine stage wins out

of 12, including 7 one-twos and 2 one-two-threes. • Exactly 25 years since his first victory (on a motorbike), Stéphane Peterhansel sealed his 12th Dakar success. • Cyril Despres (with David Castera) and Sébastien Loeb (with Daniel Elena) were the big surprises of the Dakar. They finished 7th and 9th. • Three of the four PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs entered reached the finish.

Three models in the Lexus range received updates to their standard specification, in order to provide greater comfort, convenience, style and performance. Lexus' enigmatic Sports SUV; the NX, receives a subtle boost to its comprehensive spec level with the addition of a wireless mobile phone charger for all three grades (E, EX and F Sport). The dynamic F Sport model gets Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) including Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). The RC Sports Coupe now plays host to the acclaimed 2litre turbo-charged engine recently introduced in the IS sedan range. Outstanding refinement, a broad torque spread and great efficiency are some of its hallmarks. The Multi-media system in the range-topping LS luxury sedan has also undergone an overhaul, with functionality, some ease-of-use and display improvements.

The hardy Patrol - now with added luxuries

NISSAN spruces up the Patrol Times have changed since Nissan launched its first Patrol – the 4W60 – over 64 years ago, but one thing has not: Nissan Patrol owners swear by their durable offroader. In response to the feedback from this loyal and growing market of Patrol owners, Nissan has now introduced a range of additional creature comforts for their allconquering Patrol Station Wagon 3.0 TD 4x4 GL, all without touching the goanywhere mechanicals that make this hardy overlander a favourite.

The most visible alteration is the revamped interior, which now features a full grain leather upholstery on all five seats. These specifications bring the GL-model closer to the range-topping 4.8 litre GRX version of the Patrol Station Wagon. The all-new entertainment system on both the Nissan Patrol 3.0TD GL and 4.8 GRX features a touch screen with full colour navigation, USB and Bluetooth integration, while the GL model now has a two-zone climate control system as standard.

California T Handling Speciale Astra finalist

58 experienced journalists from 22 European countries will decide which vehicle is named European "Car of the Year” for 2016. The candidate list originally consisted of 35 new models released during the course of last year. Now the jury has cut the list to seven and these cars have qualified for the final of the "Car of the Year 2016". One of the cars in the top seven: The brand-new Opel Astra which has already won international awards such as SAFETYBEST 2015 and the 2015 Golden Steering Wheel in less than two months. The European Car of the Year award was founded in 1964. In recent years, Opel came out on top twice - with the Insignia model in 2009 and the Ampera in 2012. The winner of 2016 will be announced on the eve of the Geneva Motor Show on 29 February 2016.

The successful California T, Ferrari's front-engine V8 model with retractable hard top and 2+ configuration, is now available with the new Handling Speciale option. The HS option offers a series of specific calibrations and a set-up that lends an edge,

especially in the manettino's Sport mode. This incorporates damper settings as well as modified springs that make the car stiffer which results in even sportier feedback, aided by the new engine sound that increases as revs rise.

New warranty

Audi’s future

Hyundai Automotive S.A. has again set a benchmark with a warranty that lasts for 7 years or 200,000km. This confident new feature ensures greater resale value and more peace of mind for customers. The new, extended warranty covers an array of engine and transmission components of Hyundai passenger car and light commercial vehicle sold by Hyundai Automotive S.A. with entry from 1 Feb 2016.

Electrification, digitalization and piloted driving: Audi has made these future trends of the automotive industry the focus of its appearance at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES). User-friendly operation is an Audi strength, and now the brand with the four rings is expanding its operating and its display concept (HMI, or human-machine interface) with new solutions.

Corsa Sport

Summer I is a time for relaxation and fun in the sun. Or testing cars?

Text Hanjo Stier Images Galimoto Media

SPEC SHEET

Where did you go on holiday? Henties, Cape Town, Thailand or maybe your uncle’s plaas? At the risk of sounding terribly spoilt, I did so much traveling in 2015 that I spent my entire holiday at home. Either with my feet up, my nose in a book, hands on a game controller or floating in a cool blue swimming pool. Although none of this requires the use of an automobile, there are always errands to run and people to visit around the festive season. Like most motoring journalists I could’ve pulled my own car out of the garage, blown the dust and cobwebs off, and just used that to zip to any X-mas-y appointments. However. It appears that everyone at NamWheels was on their best behaviour last year because the Santas at General Motors gave us the use of a press car for the entire holiday period. How nice is that! And it wasn’t just any old banger, shortly before the school holidays

started they delivered a metallic green Corsa. To give it its full name, you’re now looking at an Opel Corsa 1.4T Sport in Mint Green. Depending on how the light falls on it, we agreed that the colour’s name should rather be changed to Caribbean Gift Shop Dolphin Statue Turquoise. Other paint hues are also available but I grew fond of this one for a few reasons. First and foremost, it’s distinctive and rare. Not only would we easily spot our funky little friend in an overcrowded parking lot, we also failed to see another Corsa in this colour. As the days rolled by and the new year was born, we also discovered that this colour reflects sunlight and hides dirt equally well. Before I get completely carried away and start writing love poems to its coating, let me touch on the car itself. Opel launched the “New Germans” in quick succession and

there’s no doubt that this Corsa, the Adam (trendy supermini) and the Mokka (compact SUV) deliver on their maker’s promises of style and sophistication. The sales charts will also back this up, as Opel uses new engines and innovative technology in all of these models. Although our test car had the lively 1.4-litre fourcylinder turbo-petrol you’ll also find in other GM products, Opel can also sell you a Corsa with a relatively new 1L three-cylinder turbo-petrol motor. Having spent quite some time with both engines in all three models, I can vouch for the fact that they don’t have to fear the competition in terms of power and efficiency. Time and time again this car’s comprehensive and cheeky trip computer would encourage me to change up early; and the resulting torque was impressive. Opel lays claim to 5.9L/100km average consumption and we averaged a decent 7.9L/100km on

three tank fillings (max 45L) used mostly for city driving. Head for the long road, slot in sixth gear and cruise carefully to achieve the manufacturer’s claim. We also measured 0-100km/h in just 9.16 seconds and 400m in 16.54. Other things I can report on are the excellent manual air-conditioning and an easy-to-use infotainment system with smart-phone app controls (including navigation). You also get front power windows and mirrors, zooty seat fabric, a 285L boot with 60/40 split folding rear seats, as well as a light and fluffy City Steering Mode. More luxuries include auto wipers, cruise control with speed limiter, leather-covered adjustable multifunction steering wheel, ambient lighting and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Safety arsenal contains stability control, hill start assist, ISOFIX points, six airbags, rear parking beepers and a reversing camera.

There’s even more standard stuff and an additional option package (with auto parking) available – visit your nearest Opel dealer for the complete low-down. Every driver agreed that the Corsa Sport quickly integrated itself into their lives because of its punchy engine, versatility and ease of use. To come up with some criticism I’ll have to nit-pick here… The fuel and temperature gauges are a series of light bars which can be misleading at times. The sporty wheels make for a harsh ride over bad roads and uhhhh, there’s no volume knob. Hashtag whatever, this is a great little car. I’m not just saying that because it was given to us as a holiday car. My wife liked it so much that she started looking at prices on the web (from N$268,000) and two neighbours came around for a lengthy demonstration. But most importantly, I got a big lump in my throat when they eventually came to collect our summer love.

CRAZY RIDES

Chevrolet Lumina UTE SSV

By far not the most powerful (or current) car here, the last Chevy Lumina we tested - a silver SSV bakkie with a six speed manual gearbox - certainly left a lasting impression. And some black stripes on the road.

With so much torque going to the featherlight rear end, burning rubber is child's play. What we didn't expect was wheel spin into second, third and fourth gear; and we have the video to prove it.

Renault Megane RS 265 Trophy / Cup

If passenger reactions are anything to go by, this 265 horsepower Renault deserves its place on this list. Unsuspecting co-drivers will shriek, yodel or giggle once full throttle is applied to the Megane's growling engine.

However. When even seasoned passengers start grabbing your leg because you've just torque-steered across two lanes, you know that you're driving a scary car. The RS / 265 models border on over-powered. Also try: Ford Focus ST or Opel Astra OPC

Jaguar XF-R

The beautiful Jaguar XF uses the company’s brutal 5-liter supercharged V8 to produce in excess of 500 horsepower - and mountains of torque from idle speeds. It’s also the smallest sedan in which you’ll find this vicious engine.

DISCLAIMER

Although the XF-R can behave itself nicely, that instant torque can give everyone the fright of their lives. The only thing that came close to this instant savagery was the old (supercharged) Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. Also try: Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG or E63 AMG

SMALLER STUFF Can't afford one of these crazyfast and crazy-money vehicles? Don't you despair, neither can we. If you’re looking for a spot of excitement on a budget, try these budget pocket rockets on for size: • Opel Corsa Sport (look left!) • Chevrolet Sonic RS • Suzuki Swift Sport • Renault Clio RS • Volkswagen Polo GTi (pg.10)

5

Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG Coupé

463kW. 630hp. 1,000Nm. Merc's flagship Biturbo V12 should be much higher up this list but it's incredibly refined and easy to drive. The real danger is when you unleash all that power for longer than you should...

0-100 takes less than five seconds but it's the big car's in-gear acceleration which is utterly scary and illegal. Nothing much will keep up with you on the highway... in supreme luxury and with a concert-grade soundtrack. Also try: S63 AMG or a nuclear explosion

Audi S1 Sportback

Surely we don’t need to remind you that excessive speed and power is extremely

After stuffing a very beefy engine into their smallest car, Audi had no more room for the safety net that is their Quattro AWD system. As a result, the S1 (3-door or Sportback) can get skittish under full throttle, much like the

Astra OPC, Focus RS, Megane RS, etc. What secured it the final spot on our list is that it most likes to wrestle you into a different lane at triple-digit speeds. That’s right, this thing torque-steers at 120km/h!

dangerous! Should you own or purchase one of these, please drive carefully and obey the rules of the road!

Vitara

Suzuki

H Suzuki has a new compact SUV with an old, trusted name. We attended its recent launch.

Cars can be so boring. White and silver boxes stuck in an endless march to work, seas of grey metal in a dark multi-story office car park with the odd yellow specimen parked under a tiny sign proclaiming “Reserved for Marketing”. Suzuki certainly recognized this with the launch of their brand-new Vitara. Although the Vitara isn’t the first car to offer refreshing looks and colours – it competes with the Nissan Juke, Opel Mokka, Renault Captur and the Citroën Cactus – the original Vitara from 1988 could claim that it was one of the first compact SUV’s - long before we all realized that we needed a compact SUV. Suzuki may not be at the cutting edge of innovation but they definitely know how to read and respond to their customer base. With the bulk buying power in southern Africa looking for wheels in the lower *cough* cheaper segments, Suzuki released no less than seven affordable new models in the last 18 months. Added to that, their footprint has grown to an impressive 42 dealers (including two in Namibia) and the happy crowd at Suzuki Auto South Africa report that there’s more growth on the way; despite tough market conditions. Our compact SUV market is certainly on an upwards swing, more so than its full SUV counterpart. So much for the reasons why this company decided to bring their new Vitara into our midst. Its original incarnation was sold locally from 1994 to 1998 and although they only shifted 1,103 units in that time, the occasional sighting proves how hardy and well-loved the first-generation model was. At this new Vitara’s recent launch, we were also assured that this car does not replace the bigger, slightly ageing but robust Grand Vitara. The newcomer is related to Suzuki’s SX4 (crossover) model but shows marked differences in size which include a 375L boot and 185mm of ground clearance.

or six-speed auto shifter, delivered to either the front wheels or all four wheels (AllGrip), depending on the model chosen. Average consumption claim is a laudable 5.8L/100km and CO2 emissions around 140g/km. Choose between the GL, GL Plus and GLX specifications which all include seven airbags, 5-star crash test rating (new 2015 standard), ISOFIX anchors, child locks, ABS brakes with EBD, Brake Assist and ESP (stability control), daytime running lights, skid plates, alarm, immobilizer and remote central locking. Further standard equipment includes front power windows and mirrors, an adjustable multi-function steering wheel, trip computer, a CD / radio sound system with Bluetooth and USB / mp3, pollen filter, 60/40 split rear seats (up to 710L space) as well as multiple hooks, holders and hidey holes. Splash out on a GL Plus or GLX and you’ll even get toys like LED lights, panoramic sunroof, chrome and suede trim, cruise control, All Grip driving mode selector, keyless start, two extra loudspeakers (tweeters), hill hold and hill descent control, parking sensors, more storage solutions, extra interior lights and 12V sockets. Its best defence against boredom is an eightstrong colour palette of which five are twotone combinations that marketing types dream of. You can also make merry with the paint inside the new Vitara to liven up its functional cockpit. At the launch we found the seats, driving position and ride comfort to be exceptionally good. Performance isn’t on turbo rival standards but then neither is maintenance or longevity. I would describe its power as “adequate” while space and comfort were superb on our launch route; which included 80% dirt roads. I also noted that the new Vitara is fitted with Continental rubber and a temporary spare wheel.

Borrowing styling elements from its ancestor, Vitara has bonnet and fender bulges as well as other small details which give a nod to the original. Its modern proportions even hint at a luxury British SUV. The rear end is somewhat reminiscent of an SX4 and the drive train could be accused of the same…

Prices start at N$252,100 for the base model and you’ll pay 30 to 70 grand extra for fancier and automatic versions. AllGrip derivatives come in at N$309,600 or N$338,900 and all prices include a 4-year / 60,000km service plan. More importantly though, the Vitara undoubtedly retains its ancestor’s cheerful demeanour.

A 1.6L four cylinder petrol engine offers up to 86kW or 151Nm through a five-speed manual

And in the right colour combo, it’s certainly not boring.

Duster

Audi Renault

LAUNCH REPORT

25 000km

Jeeps H have always been rough and rugged. We tested the softer, more fashionable Renegade.

Remember that nasty recession in 2009? Car makers certainly do; especially the big American trio of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

That model is only available with a 2.4L fourcylinder petrol engine, while the others offer a choice of 1.6L petrol, 1.4L turbo-petrol or 1.6L turbo-diesel.

Despite budget cuts and government bailouts, the automotive ménage à trois could not save all their brands and saw the end of Hummer, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and others.

To make things even more confusing (let’s agree on “diverse”) you also get an all-wheeldrive 1.4T and no less than three gearboxes; depending on model.

The future of Opel / Vauxhall didn’t look too rosy at some stage and while Ford soldiered on (probably due to the popularity of their FSeries bakkies), the freshly divorced Chrysler Group quickly jumped into bed with Fiat to join forces and start some engineering sharies between Europe and America.

Our spinach-hued “Limited” 6-speed manual press car was propelled by the feisty (Fiat MultiJet) 1.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder with 103kW or up to 230Nm.

I mentioned all of this because it explains the heritage of our latest test car, the brand-new Jeep Renegade. The Jeep brand is part of this new Fiat / Chrysler marriage and the Renegade is their newest attempt at building two different cars using the same starting point. A Renegade is actually a Fiat 500X; or vice versa. Unlike early attempts at badge swapsies (like the Dodge Journey a.k.a. Fiat Freemont), the 500X and Renegade differ from each other inside and out. Both cars are built in Italy and, having driven them almost back-to-back, I couldn’t spot any major relation between them. Where the 500X is round and cheeky, this Renegade is square and bulky. In fact, I would go so far as to describe the Fiat as attractively modern while the Jeep looks alien and almost disproportionate. These looks are a strong point though, carving opinions in two neat halves of recoiling horror and inquisitive joy. Our test car’s Commando Green paint job didn’t do it any favours either, gathering nicknames like “Three-day-old Guacamole” and “Seventies Bathroom” on top of insults for its bizarre shape and soft-roader nature. “That’s not a real Jeep” was uttered many times, aimed at this model’s front-wheeldrive only architecture. Jeep South Africa currently sells three models – Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk – of which only the latter one features a proper fourwheel-drive system with low range and crawl ratio.

As can be expected, the little engine struggles below 1,500rpm or when asked to lug a full load uphill; other than that, it’s a marvel of engineering which lends this Renegade punchy performance and decent efficiency. Drive it nicely and Jeep claims you’ll get 16.6km/L – we averaged a commendable 14 over our week of mixed driving. Give Renegade the spurs and it whooshes past 100km/h in 10.9 seconds - our Hulk-coloured machine managed an impressive 10.6! The little Jeep is easy and smooth to pilot; most testers enjoyed the driving position as well as the cabin’s versatility and quality. Safety and luxury items are comprehensive but the Renegade offers even more… In order to set itself apart from the 500X (and frankly, any other compact SUV / Cross-over), the vehicle is peppered with Jeep emblems, caricatures, hidden maps and a collection of the Renegade’s main logo, X. Quite a few of these are hidden so patient hunters will find that this car has more exes than Taylor Swift. Yet again, our Pea Soup test car caught an equal amount of flak and praise for these adornments. Same for its price of N$385,000 although you will find cheaper and dearer versions either way. Throughout our test I grew increasingly fonder of the Renegade, and not just because I like freaky cars and freaky colours… There’s a good car hiding underneath that silly veneer, and while it’s no Wrangler or Cherokee, I think it’s exactly what Jeep needs right now. The belated matrimony between this crusty American pioneer of 4x4’s and the lively Italian fashionista has produced a bizarre but interesting offspring. Mazel tov!

SPRINT REVIEW

SPRINT REVIEW

“...true mile-muncher...”

Polo GTi

“...the Polo GTi is one of the best.”

Some facts: The BMW 3Series has always been the sporting driver’s choice and I’ll get straight to it – it still is. While other car makers are trying to infuse dynamism into their machines, the boffins at BMW just keep filing away little-by-little at this winning recipe. In fact, this new model looks like they haven’t filed at all…

More information: Among the fresh additions is BMW’s cellular-based connectivity package. Next to live traffic updates, detailed maps and internet browsing you also receive a Concierge (butler) service. A call to this centre was met by miniscule VOIP delays and an extremely helpful gentleman with a European accent.

BMW South Africa claims average fuel use of four point something litres per 100, we got 7.2L/100km for a week of mixed driving. The four-way “Adaptive M” driving mode selection (N$14,000) makes a marked difference in the vehicle’s responses while handling (with the N$19,700 Sport Line option fitted here) was excellent.

Our only other complaint is pricing. You’ll need to start at N$483,000 and budget quite a bit more if you’re addicted to gadgets. As is usually the case with South African press demonstrators, this one was groaning under the load of almost every optional extra you care to mention. Its final price was close to that of a decent 5-Series.

Some facts: Volkswagen has refreshed its Polo range with more efficient engines and better technology, at the same time giving the hotheaded GTi a good seeing-to. Where once pounded a 1.4litre heart, the new Polo GTi now has a growling 1.8-litre with 141kW; available as a DSG or Manual.

More info: Most testers and GTi buyers (also of the Golf GTi) prefer the rapidity and convenience of VW’s DSG but yours truly believes that a hot hatch should be manual. Drop the clutch, burn rubber, short shift or hit the limiter – that’s what hot hatches are meant to do. And the Polo GTi is one of the best.

We didn’t: Its back-breaking ride. You have been warned. This is one of the hardest cars we’ve driven recently, not helped by the supportive but firm sports seats. Audio quality isn’t that impressive (mid/bass can get too heavy) while fast changes to second gear can sometimes find the reverse gate.

That’s right; you’re actually looking at the latest Dreier from München. Not a whole new model but the usual mid-life refresh each car range receives. Retaining its edgy good looks and efficient cockpit is great news for the resale values (either way of 2015) so BMW spent most of their time on efficiency and new technology.

We liked: Weighing down the nose of this accomplished sedan is BMW’s four-cylinder turbo-diesel, which means that this 320d has 400Nm and the bouncy 3-Series front end was slightly less so. This metallic blue press car’s 8speed automatic gearbox (an option of N$24,400) did well to smooth out the power delivery.

We didn’t: Like most ultramodern cars, surpassing the 320d’s grip levels takes some rather rough driving. In this application, it also required red-lining the diesel engine. Eww. Ride comfort is good (if you stay away from any lowprofile tyres) with sufficient space for four adults, five if the ones at the back all like each other.

Why you will want one: BMW’s 3-Series isn’t just good at dynamic driving, this little Diesel is a true milemuncher and the recent updates to the range bring it up to date with innovative tech. Your 320d won’t be unique on the road but it’ll give you years of sheer driving pleasure; and should be easy to sell, too.

The seven-speed DSG (dualclutch automatic) is every commuter’s friend, this sixspeed manual version is the enthusiast’s choice with an additional 70Nm over the DSG’s 250Nm. You may also choose the Sport suspension button to make the engine even growlier and, quite unbelievably, firm up the already solid ride.

We enjoyed: The response and power delivery of that lively turbo-petrol engine with snappy gear changes and direct steering combine with loads of grip and agile handling to make this a real hoot to drive. The optional LED headlights are highly recommended and the new infotainment system gives lots of vehicle and trip info.

Why you’ll want a Polo GTi: Exceptional versatility of a normal Polo with the speed and excitement of a Golf GTi. All styling details are subtle and tasteful and the build quality is top drawer stuff. Drive it nicely and it can be fuel-efficient, but honestly, is that what you bought a GTi for? I didn’t think so.

H Ons eie Kalahari-Ferrari!

Toyota has given its Auris another chance at success...

If you wanted a small family hatchback a decade or two ago, you probably drove out of a Toyota showroom. Going right, presumably.

The subsequent RunX still garnered a bit of success but handed a losing batten to the Auris – or Corolla hatchback, as Europeans call it.

These days, if you’re craving a sensible car around 250 to 300 thousand, there are hordes of choices with the latest tech. But not many Toyotas…

Personally I wasn’t nuts about the Runks or Oros, yet my test drives of both revealed that they were slightly dull but highly practical automobiles. In other words, proper Toyotas.

The evergreen Corolla sedan – now in its 67th generation or something - is still marching into the record books but its successes leave me sceptical. How many people do you know who drive a modern Corolla? Reps, companies, rentals and other fleets – that’s where its strength lies. Things don’t even look half as good for its hatchback twin, the Auris. Roll back a few years and our roads were crawling with every imaginable Conquest and Tazz model.

Perhaps their pricing was too steep and they failed to keep pace with the more affordable and better looking rivals from Korea? Whatever the case may be, Toyota isn’t giving up the fight that easily. This was brutally evident from the press car they dropped off at my house the other day, coated in paint so vibrant that even yours truly was lost for words initially. Mostly, I couldn’t decide if it was poison yellow or radioactive green.

Leather is standard on the XR, as is the new multimedia sound system with touchy screen. It’s got good audio quality, an easy user interface, cool blue colours to match its other controls, a reverse parking camera, loads of inputs but no volume knob – touch buttons and the steering wheel knoppies can help here.

Oh, and the clutch clunks on the fire wall when fully depressed – although this wasn’t felt by all drivers. That typed, lots of praise was garnished on the Auris XR seat heaters, two 12V sockets, highly efficient climate control with its cool toggle switches, the autodimming rear view mirror and comprehensive trip computer between the main instruments.

My OCD is not a fan of current Toyota (and Lexus) dashboard designs but I will note that the bizarre shapes, angles, layers, 1982 LCD clock and the mix of materials certainly look funky and interesting.

Complaints only arrived from tall occupants who bemoaned limited passenger knee room and (front) windscreen wiper coverage, as well as a strange driving position and the lack of steering wheel reach.

All testers agreed that the interior has also improved with better quality materials and (mostly) soft surfaces to touch.

The few silver highlights, soft leather and white stitching help to accentuate various elements; lifting the cabin ambience.

Toyota calls this hue “Citrus Yellow” and most of us thought that it suits the Auris’ sharp and modern shape; there are also more conservative colours you may choose from.

As is customary for Toyota, the gearbox and all pedals are easy to operate.

Motorisation is also customary Toyota equipment with a 1.6L in-line 4-cylinder petrol giving up to 97kW or 160Nm for 0100km/h in ten seconds (we clocked just over nine) and a top speed of 200km/h. Claimed average CO2 per km is 145g and petrol consumption 6.2L/100km (claimed average) from the 50L tank - our lumolime specimen managed nine. Achieving six litres per hundred will take some doing and eat into the XR’s performance even more which is – by the modern (turbo) standards - not exactly exhilarating to start with. The lack of (rather costly) turbo plumbing is balanced by a revhappy nature and fairly instant, naturally-aspirated response. Other sensible hallmarks are 140mm of ground clearance, ABS brakes with emergency assistance, front and curtain

airbags (including knee-bag), 16" alloys with decent 205/55R rubber, a full size spare wheel and a 360L boot with one-touch 60/40 rear seat recline to give you a completely flat surface. The Toyota Auris XR’s asking price of N$305,000 includes a 3-year/100,000km warranty as well as five years or 90,000km worth of service plan. In this price bracket, the Auris XR is outgunned performancewise by turbo competitors but it offers good specs and various models; including a Hybrid. It’s also got the reputation and dealer count that comes with its badge, plus a sense of longevity thanks to that relatively simple engine. You could almost say that it’s a no-nonsense car but, and I’m delighted about this, a higherspec car with a colour like this actually looks quite cool.

Text Dr Hans Heese Images Volvo Cars South Africa

SPEC SHEET

‘n Volvo S60 T6. Hoekom?

So leer mens elke dag nuwe dinge.

KNOWLEDGE: OFF-ROAD ACCESSORIES

SUSPENSION COMPONENTS Which setup should you choose?

Main Benefits For any four-wheel-drive vehicle, its suspension is one of the most crucial parts of the vehicle’s off-road ability. While there are many different types of suspension setups, even minor alterations can improve the ground clearance, wheel articulation and ultimately the amount of grip.

Ride Height Aftermarket components can “lift” your 4x4 to a more desirable height for any off-roading applications. Other than better clearance of obstacles (and towering above traffic) another benefit is that a lifted car can usually accommodate bigger wheels.

Damping / Response Thanks to a huge selection of aftermarket suspension components, 4x4 enthusiasts can also change the damping or response of their car’s suspension. This can drastically alter the way your vehicle copes with the terrain you wish to traverse.

Custom / Adjustable Now we’ve reached the cream of the crop when it comes to various suspension setups. Requiring the replacement of most components and more work on the vehicle itself, this is usually the reserve of professional or hard-core 4x4 drivers. The advantage is that you can adjust your car to whichever terrain may lie ahead!

Tydrenmotors

Text Dr Hans Heese Images Various sources
