NEWS & NEW MODELS General Motors milestone

Carbon-neutral oil range

General Motors celebrated 500 million vehicles built globally over the past 106 years - the most by any automaker to date. GM is the first manufacturer to achieve this milestone and remains focused on being the most valued automaker. General Motors South Africa (GMSA) is proud to have produced 2.76 million of these vehicles since it started operations in 1926.

Castrol is rolling out the first ever globally CO2 neutral Castrol Professional offering, in support of leading car companies’ green agendas. Castrol’s "co-engineering partners" are Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, MG, SEAT, Skoda, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo. Castrol Sales Director for Africa, Graham Noonan says CO2 neutrality is achieved through greener technology in the production of the lubricants as well as by investing in carbon-positive projects around the world, from reforestation in Kenya to landfill gas management in Europe.

520kw Jeep SRT8

Rob Green Motorsport has done it again - this time using an RGM-Whipple twin-screw ‘blower’ for this SRT8 Jeep's 6.4-litre HEMI V8 to produce 520kW and 1,000Nm… Tests at Gerotek revealed a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in a VBOXverified 4.74 seconds and 400 metres in 12.85 seconds at 177.2 km/h. As a finale, the big Jeep dispatched the standing kilometre in 23 anda-bit seconds at 230 km/h.

Scoobyfest 2015 Subaru owners were out in force at ScoobyFest, the annual ‘Scooby Do’ which brings fans of the brand together from far and wide. It was truly that, with owners Gert Brits and Anton Godfrey driving all the way from Namibia in their 2002 WRX STIs to be part of the event at Red Star Raceway near Delmas on March 21. Some 118 vehicles came out to play, which included a skidpan and muddy off-road track. It was a feast of blue mica, gold wheels, cerise detailing, and modifications of every kind; a showcase of the passion that the Subaru faithful have for their rides...

smart forgigs study with JBL

The smart "forgigs" study with audio partner JBL is probably the world's smallest concert hall on wheels. The high-end sound system in this fortwo has a total maximum power output of 5,720 watts. And that's not all: the smart forgigs with its 16 speakers, two 30cm subwoofers and five amplifiers hits up to 150db SPL and could also serve live concerts by street musicians, for example.

Audi Silver Arrow Awards

Ute Force heads to Namibia Soccer players from 12 schools in Windhoek recently honed their football skills in the Chevrolet Day of Play at the Katutura Youth Centre. Working in partnership with Dreamfields Project and General Motors' dealership in Namibia, Auas Motor Group, the soccer tournament aimed to bring schools together, unite communities and to enjoy soccer action with the Namibian Schools Sport Union (NSSU). The participating teams received brand new soccer kit, soccer boots, and One World Futbols, the soccer balls that are ultra-durable and nearly indestructible. According to Tim Hendon, Chevrolet brand manager, Chevrolet's Day of Play is a rally for communities to unite and to bring the beautiful game of soccer to the heart of

the community for everyone to enjoy. "Through Play, everyone's possibilities can become beautiful realities," said Hendon. Hendon said: "In the last two years Chevrolet has brought play to over 30 million youth across the globe and we are grateful for this opportunity in Namibia today," he said. Mr Gawie Koekemoer, Sales and Marketing Director at the Auas Motors Group, said the tournament success is largely attributed to the amazing collaboration with Chevrolet, Dreamfields Project and the NSSU. "Seeing the enthusiasm of so many youngsters and the enjoyment and excitement the game of football brings to all, shows the success of the Day of Play. We at Auas Motors are honoured to have been part of it."

on 8 May 2015. Among the award winners, the Avus Award category recognises Dealer Principals of the best performing dealerships according to strict criteria, as well as Dealer of the Year and the Dealer Group of the Year awards. The following Dealerships and Dealer Principals (names in brackets) were recognised in the Avus category: Cat. 1, 1st Place: Audi Centre Hatfield (Matt Boylan) Cat. 1, 2nd Place: Audi Centre Sandton (Denton Thiele) Cat. 2, 1st Place: Audi Centre Windhoek (Johan Pretorius) Category 3, 1st Place: Audi Newcastle (Omar Docrat)

Entries open for 2015 Ranger Odessey in Namibia Ford's 2015 Ranger Odyssey has officially been launched, with entries now open for those seeking an action-packed adventure of a lifetime. The third edition of the annual Ranger Odyssey will see a total of 20 contestants from around Africa navigating through the extremely challenging north-western region of Namibia on a 12-day expedition that will push each person to the limit. Following last year's exploration of the Kaokoland in the far north-east corner of Namibia, the new route for 2015 heads north-west and traverses the Damaraland region. The adventure starts off at Spitzkoppe and travels through Palmwag, Khuwarib and the barren and unforgiving Desolation Trail that follows the Huab River to Desolation Valley. Along with tackling some extreme offroading, from desert plains to soft river beds

Maserati raises millions for charity Thirty-five teams, including five bright red Maseratis, with 70 high-profile women have raised more than 18.3 million Rand for charities in Africa in a high performance dash across Europe from London (UK) to Cannes (in the south of France) during the Cash & Rocket Tour 2015. Organiser Julie Brangstrup brought together the 70 drivers who covered 1,717 km over the course of four days in a total of 35 bright red supercars taking turns behind the wheel during a European Tour that touched all the Fashion and Lifestyle Capital Cities.

Among the celebrities at the wheel of the Maserati Ghiblis were Jodie Kidd, Mollie King, Selita Ebanks, Nieves Álvarez, and Patricia Bright. The Cash & Rocket Tour convoy collected money for three worthwhile African non-profit organizations: Sumbandila in South Africa, Shine On Sierra Leone and OrphanAid Africa in Ghana. A charity auction, held during a gala dinner, managed to raise more than 10 million Rand/Dollars for benevolent purposes. The Tour wound up by raising over one million Pounds (more than 18.3 Rand/Dollars).

Simola Hill Climb 2015 Building on last year’s success, the 2015 Jaguar Simola Hillclimb showed once again why it is fast-becoming the premier highlight on the South African motorsport calendar. The tight, twisting 1.9km road leading to the five-star Simola Golf Club and Country Estate was visited by over 12,000 spectators in three days. All had come to see the country’s top names in motorsport unleash thousands of horsepower and compete for the coveted Classic Conquerer and King of the Hill titles. The pits hosted stock and lightly-modified cars, as well as extremely fast racecars and purpose-built hillclimb specials. Saturday and Sunday saw 80+ competitors vying to see who could conquer the Simola Hill in the shortest time and be crowned King of the Hill. The title went to Desmond Gutzeit, who took top honours in his R32 Nissan Skyline GTR, in a new record time.

and punishing rock trails, the contestants will witness some of the region's breathtaking sights. These include a crater in Palmwag that is a UNESCO heritage site, along with Brandberg which happens to be Namibia's highest mountain at over 2 600m. While the life-changing experience is an exceptional prize in itself, there's also the allure of the grand prize which includes the use of an Odyssey-spec Ranger for a year, along with R5,000 worth of fuel per month. The evaluation programme will determine who is tough enough for the 12-day Namibian adventure. Just 20 finalists will ultimately be chosen for the life-changing expedition which takes place from 23 July to 3 August. Dr. Neumann confirmed that, as the result of the greatest power-train offensive in Opel's history, the new Astra will feature state-of-the-art engines. Turbodiesel 1.7

the NamWheels Welcome to one of NamWheels' more regular features - our list of top 5 car-related items. In this edition we feature thee most impressive sound systems we've ever heard in a car. Please note that this excludes any aftermarket SPL monster installs; or our buddy Jonas' woofer-drenched Citi Golf Designa would knock everything off this page and make you deaf. Also be aware that this list is not an exact science as it does not include every car on the market and was compiled from the often wonky memories of our test team. SOUND SYSTEMS

Bang & Olufsen Audi A8, BMW 640d, Mercedes SL500

Those Danes who made the turntable your Dad is still going on about make some amazing in-car systems. All Bang & Olufsen (B&O to their friends) systems shine with amazing clarity, punch and roominess.

A word of warning though - most of these systems are an optional extra which will cost you anywhere from N$9,000 to N$90,000, depending on the car. However; we think that's a bargain for in-car sound perfection.

Bowers & Wilkins Jaguar XJ & XF-R

Some of the most sophisticated and detailed sound systems we've ever heard came from the British manufacturer B&W. Thus it's no surprise that their speakers were fitted to high-end Jaguars. Good show, old chap!

Unfortunately we've discovered that since we tested the big XJ and raucous XF-R, their audio systems changed to Meridian. While they're also fantastic, we prefer the yellow cones and crisp sound of Bowers & Wilkins.

Burmester Mercedes-Benz C& S-Class, S CoupĂŠ

Although we hadn't heard of these speakers before, Mercedes uses Burmester stuff in their high-end cars nowadays. Available as optional extras, prices range from N$10,000 (C-Class) to N$95,000 (some S-Classes).

It's most impressive in the biggest sedans of which we tested an S350 BlueTEC, S500 and S65 AMG CoupĂŠ (see page 13). As in the SL and C-Class, the S-Class uses parts of the front foot wells as a bass reflex chamber.

BOSE Alfa-Romeo, Audi, Infiniti, Nissan

While lacking the window-flexing abilities of its rivals mentioned above, the American BOSE systems have graced some excellent cars with their well-rounded and crisp sound reproduction.

Our most recent meeting was in Audi's mad RS Q3 where these quality speakers made every journey an absolute pleasure. You'll also find these in some hot Alfas, most new Infinitis and Nissan's 370Z.

Harman / Kardon Various

This name is a familiar sight in many BMW's and Mercedes', for very good reasons. Either available as standard on top models or for a moderate price on lesser cars, the Harman Kardon speakers are a good purchase.

Sometimes lacking in mid to low frequency grunt, they can't match any of the systems listed above, plus we found some of them too enthusiastic in the treble department. Still, a well-deserved mention in our top 5.

STANDARD STUFF Can't afford one of these cars or monster systems? Don't dispair, neither can we. In our experience, the standard or premium audio systems in mid-range BMW or Volvo cars tend to offer decent bang for your buck. Given a clean audio source, some of Volvo's sound systems will even tolerate full volume without distortion.

NOTICE ANYTHING?

Yup, most great audio brand names start with a B. It's a good rule of thumb, also with home audio setups - stick to stuff that starts with the letter B.

Ford se titaniese strydwa teen die Beierse wielemakers

Text Dr Hans Heese Images Ford Motor Company of South Africa

badges on a small bakkie - surely that can't be right?

Disappointment. It comes in many forms, be it last weekend's innings of your favourite sports team, the current state of my bank account or tomorrow's weather. The perfect antidote to disappointment is an unexpected surprise and we most certainly got one while reviewing the Chevrolet Utility Sport. Most of the odds were stacked against this little pick-up. For starters, I don't like pickups. Secondly, this car commits a huge car crime in my eyes by being popular and abundant. Common, if you like. And last but certainly not least, it arrived just as a 630 horsepower Autobahn monster left. Coated in Switchblade Silver with snazzy 15-inch alloys and most Namibians' favourite feature – fog lights – the little bakkie made a good first impression. A quick peek inside its spartan interior initially made me recoil but then I started questioning why it's 15 times cheaper than Mr. 630. For starters, it's a million times less complicated, can't park itself and has neither bejeweled headlights nor carpets made from the gowns of Tibetan monks. And although it's a bit smaller than an Autobahn bully, half of this N$201,600 vehicle is essentially an empty rectangle for carting your stuff around - a load bed. Crucially, the dimensions and maximum payload of this cargo area can't match the Utility's fiercest rival but Chevrolet offers a broader spectrum of models and engine choices. The model you see before you is their 77kW / 161Nm 1.8 Sport which renders the 68kW / 120Nm and N$8,000 cheaper 1.4 Sport completely pointless. The only advantages of purchasing the weaker Sport model are allegedly lower average fuel consumption and that the two models are visually identical. Nobody at the KFC drive-through will be able to tell the difference – we certainly couldn't – as the 1.4 matches the 1.8 spec-to-spec and has the same Sport badges. Its standard kit includes remote central locking, power steering, air-con, CD/mp3 radio, Bluetooth and other such bla-bla's. More interesting are the follow-me-home lights, auto door locks, power windows and exterior mirrors, trip computer, auto lights and ABS brakes with EBD.

If you or your overzealous company driver/s can do without all of the abovementioned (and a few other things), save yourself sixty grand and go for the base 1.4 Utility. And if you trust your employee/s with even more grunt underfoot, the 1.8-litre engine is also available in poverty spec at a decent price. Back to this 1.8 Sport, it took a while for my 1.95 meters to find a comfy driving position in the hard plastic landscape of the Utility's interior. Once suitably positioned, I discovered extra space behind the seats and an overall ruggedness to the assembly of this cabin. I'm hopeful that it will outlast your five year lease. The instruments are a strange concoction of digital and partly reversed analogue with a digital coolant gauge that won't budge above one third. Window, mirror and ventilation controls are easy to use with only the sound system (with its display in a pod atop the dash) needing a round of practice. As for driving the little bakkie, it didn't take long for me to realize that you don't need 630 horses to have fun with. Quite the opposite, actually. That amount of power isn't fun, it's downright frightening and you can never use it for more than a few seconds. A Chevy UTE Sport, on the other hand, can go flat out almost all day. Pedal modulation and steering feedback are commendable and, provided you've caught the right ratio from the snappy box of five cogs, the naturally breathing 8valve motor hangs on your right foot beautifully. Top speed is a claimed 193km/h and 0100km/h took us 10.9 seconds. If not pushing too hard, it even handles well. So there you have it. Other company owners may be comparing TFT sizes and LED counts at the country club but you have a zippy, nippy, practical pick-up at a fraction of the cost which won't cost you an internal organ in maintenance. And the word “Sport” on its flanks is no disappointment.

Sedan & Hatch

Can the hatch give the sedan the boot?

*Please check all prices with your Namibian dealership(s)

Some while back I made the bold statement that Mazda is Japan’s most progressive mainstream manufacturer having taken this mantle away from Honda, a company that appears to have been on something of a siesta in the last few years. I mention this because I had very high expectations of the new Mazda3, two versions of which graced my driveway early in 2015. Indeed, the launch event in the latter part of 2014 heightened my expectation levels but I must again make the point that launch events mostly encompass open road driving which doesn’t always emulate real world use. Week 1 of my longer term association was spent in a 1.6 Dynamic manual sedan while week 2 was spent behind the wheel of a hatchback in Astina trim with auto transmission and 2.0 power. Both cars were painted in the same rather garish crimson paint (Soul Red) and both were identically kitted-out with black interiors. Styling is a very subjective matter, I agree, but I’m going to declare a marginal preference for the sedan. Whichever configuration takes your fancy though, there’s an undeniable flow to the bodywork which fits in rather well with Mazda’s much-hyped Kodo Soul of

Motion design philosophy. From the distinctive family nose and long bonnet up to the Bpillar, no differences can be detected.

the inner bonnet area) and that the remote-release fuel filler flaps, along with the boot “hinges” on the saloon are disconcertingly flimsy affairs.

Thereafter, the different treatment is self-obvious albeit that the hatch features unusually heavily-raked C-pillars that impinge really badly on rear three-quarter visibility from the driver’s seat.

Boot carpeting in both models is of no better than average quality while utilitarian metal rods are used as bonnet props that are annoyingly placed in terms of access to the otherwise welllaid-out engine bays.

Both versions are notable for the superbly consistent uniformity and narrowness of all panel gaps and for the ease of door opening/closing but as a person who is somewhat obsessed with paintwork, I must dish out a few brickbats in the manufacturer’s direction.

In fairness, some of these "short cuts", as I will euphemistically call them, are by no means unique but because of my higher expectations, I have to declare a measure of disappointment.

The colour of the paint on the bumpers and the grille surrounds is markedly darker than that on the bodywork proper and virtually every panel is afflicted with fine orange peel. Sadly, although a superficial inspection would lead you to believe that gloss levels are acceptable, this is not the case as the clear coat lacks depth and clarity and would appear to be less resistant to stone-chipping than that of some rivals, It also didn’t escape my eagle eye that the inner boot and hatch surrounds are devoid of clear coat (as is, not unusually,

Happily, the interior execution passes muster. Both cars were decked out in fail-safe black livened by red stitching and perforated leather seat facings. The seats, electrically activated in the Astina, are excellent. Well-shaped and smartlytailored, the multi-adjustable front pews provide excellent posture and support from the shoulders to the thighs. And thanks to the adjustable steering position, there’s no reason not to find the perfect driving position and there’s no cause to complain about stowage space. Those in the rear are also well off thanks in part to the space-liberating benefits of a long wheelbase.

Angle of recline is spot on and knee room in particular is surprisingly generous. There’s a less claustrophobic feel in the back of the sedan but the hatch deserves mention for providing more shape to the seats than you’ll find in most hatchbacks. The dashboard in both Mazda 3 derivatives is of the soft-touch variety and is neatly laid out with a 7-inch semi-detached info screen, complete with nav in the Astina, dominating the upper central area. While most of the trimmings are actually hard to the touch, Mazda has done an excellent job in disguising this fact such that the overall effect within either cabin is classy and stylish. Hidden within the smartlyexecuted cabin are front, side and curtain airbags. The instrument cluster in both is best described as minimalist with the centre dial housing a speedo on the 1.6 and a large rev counter on the 2.0 which makes do with a digital speedo. All pertinent information is digitally displayed in the righthand cluster. Equipment levels in both these iterations are very generous with auto-everything on hand including Bluetooth.

Naturally, the Astina trim is the best-equipped but may I suggest a visit to the Mazda website for precise details.

Braking too was powerful and progressive; the power steering provided decent feel and acceptably fast responses.

Both test models were imbued w i t h M a z d a ’ s S K YA C T I V technology which in basic terms describes the company’s drive towards greater efficiencies from engines to transmissions to bodywork that uses lighter but stronger steels.

The 2.0 mill in the hatch was understandably meatier but it too is rather long in the tooth and requires revs to deliver its best as max power of 121kW arrives at 6,000 rpm while the torque peak of 210Nm is only achieved at 4,000rpm.

The 1.6 MZR engine in the sedan produces a middle-of-the-road 77kW at 6,000rpm with a torque peak of 121Nm at a heady 4,000rpm.

An overall consumption of 8.4L/100km was recorded over the week’s use.

While it spins smoothly and is satisfactory on a motorway cruise, it lacks low speed torque and can sound strained under hard acceleration. To keep pace with the European competition, Mazda needs a small capacity turbo four rather urgently. For the record, the 1.6 averaged 8.1L/100 over a week which was dominated by urban driving but a check on the motorway revealed that a figure in the low sevens is entirely possible. Happily, the positive-shifting 5speed manual box in the sedan made cog-swopping a pleasure as did the light clutch with its smooth take-up.

Notwithstanding these few remarks, the engine combined nicely with the responsive and smooth-shifting 6-speed auto that did rather well in masking the low speed torque deficit by dropping cogs with alacrity. In both instances, the overall level of refinement is very good for the class provided the engines are not asked to run at break-neck speeds. Extraneous noises are well suppressed and directional stability is beyond reproach meaning constant steering corrections just aren’t needed. In the case of the 1.6, tyre size is 205/60R16 while the 2.0 rides on heftier 215/45R18 rubber. That should tell you that the smaller-engined car offers a

more supple ride which is the case but the 2.0 rarely feels uncomfortable and rewards with more direct responses to the helm and a sportier feel overall. For the technophiles among you, the new 3 rides on MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, a combination which has been successfully engineered to provide the aforementioned pleasing driving qualities. Now comes the time to disclose which version I preferred. Mazda’s Kodo design philosophy expresses itself best in the sedan but that’s not to say the hatch is a boring box. Far from it as both are class leaders on the appearance front so let me hedge my bets and state that the ideal 3 in my book would be a sedan powered by Mazda’s excellent 2.2 Turbo D which unfortunately is a pipe dream for the moment. Aside from the few cosmetic flaws I highlighted and the fact that the 1.6 motor in particular needs a torque infusion, the latest Mazda3 in whichever iteration takes your fancy, is a hugely competitive contender that combines great design with excellent comfort and equipment levels underwritten by a good value proposition.

Subaru

Some background info: The artist previously known as Impreza WRX Sedan is now just a WRX, thanks to Subaru culling the hatchback version. Heavily infused with World Rally genes, this car has a turbo-charged petrol flat-four (Boxer) engine which sends up to 197kW or 350Nm to all four wheels. Controlled by rather clever computers and a central differential, the “Symmetrical All Wheel Drive” system also does active torque vectoring, vehicle dynamics control and traction control. In plain English that means a WRX has extremely intelligent power distribution, phenomenal grip and plenty of driver aids. The 2015 models also feature an upgraded audio system with Bluetooth and touchy screen, rear view camera, aux, USB, CD, radio and voice command. WRX also has a multi-display pod with turbo boost gauge, climate control, keyless entry and start, sporty

seats with WRX logos and Subaru’s idea of leather. More facts: With a raft of airbags, the WRX also has a five star crash test rating. Its boot can take up to 460L and the rear seats (60/40 foldable) will comfortably accommodate two adults – three at a push. Subaru claims an average of 9.2L per 100km which is entirely possible if you drive it nicely. Go for the new automatic (CVT) model to save more fuel and your left leg in rush hour traffic. The Manual WRX has a heavy clutch and the CVT isn’t as slow or dreary as you may think. It costs N$16,600 more than the Manual and – hand on heart – spoils the fun in corners due to that slippingclutch sensation. Where we took it: The shops, a mountain pass, smooth highways, bumpy byways and coffee with a sister. For such a mean-looking thing with lowprofile tyres, it actually rides

WRX

quite comfortably. With a semi-aggressive start, our Racelogic box recorded a best 0-100km/h time of 6.44 seconds. The CVT did 6.05... You should watch out for: Introverts beware; this is a low-slung, body-kitted, darkwheel brawler with rumbling quad exhausts and a huge bonnet scoop. The interior still feels a bit low rent but history tells us that they last forever. Same for the rest of the car, if it’s been properly cared for. I’d look at upgrading the brakes. Why you’ll want one: Lots of bang for your buck. No really, a lot! Starting at N$478,400 including a 3-year/75,000km maintenance plan and 3year/100,000km warranty, a Subaru WRX can easily keep up with more expensive and powerful cars. It lacks their refinement or top speed but will probably outlast them and cost less to maintain. Good car.

ROAD SAFETY: SEATBELTS

SEATBELTS

SAVE LIVES It's a widely known fact, backed up by many studies, that seatbelts are still the most effective way to reduce fatalities and serious injuries in a vehicle crash. Unfortunately, many people still lose their lives in crashes on our roads where some of them may have survived if they had worn a seatbelt.

Still not convinced? Here are three good reasons why you should wear your seatbelt: • They can save your life in a crash • The risk of serious injury can be less • It only takes a moment to put on

During a car crash, any occupants are still travelling at the vehicle's original speed as the impact occurs. When the vehicle finally comes to a stop, unbelted occupants weigh multiple times their own body weight and slam into the dashboard, windshield or other parts of the interior; often with fatal results.

Seatbelts (or safety belts) are designed in such a way that, during a crash, they also distribute the forces of rapid deceleration over larger and stronger parts of your body - like the chest and hips. Most seatbelts even stretch a little to slow you down more gently and increase stopping distance; some even pre-tension before an impact.

Seat belts are designed to absorb the forces of a crash while keeping you in place so that you are less likely to strike the windshield, steering wheel, dashboard or a fellow vehicle occupant. Seatbelts also prevent you from being thrown out of a vehicle.

And last but certainly not least, the humble seatbelt can actually help the driver to remain in position (and thus in control) during accident avoidance or a primary collision. In the latter case, it gives the driver a chance to prevent a further crash.

NOT WEARING A SEATBELT WHILE DRIVING IS ALSO ILLEGAL!

New T6 Kombi coming soon!

I may have made a slightly huge mistake. Desperate for clever ways to start some of my recent reviews, I encouraged readers to remember certain vehicles. Except that now I’m staring at the Big Daddy of most people’s motoring past and feel a bit sheepish using the same angle: do you remember the old VW Kombis?

While I find some DSG’s to be jerky, drive to these front wheels is extremely smooth. The turbo-diesel’s big torque output ensures plenty of shove while the last ratio in this ‘box is geared for better fuel efficiency. Volkswagen claims an average of 8L/100km from the 80L tank and we’re delighted to confirm this.

Thanks to its 3m wheelbase, 11.9m turning radius and 165mm ground clearance, it easily traversed the rather rough farm tracks leading to our merry camp site. The only disappointment – shared by fellow Kombi aficionados – is that you can’t fold the seats to make a continuous bed, as you could in the old cars.

My wife certainly does. In a clear demonstration of her vs. my parents’ automotive choices, she immediately took command of the pilot’s seat, fired the beast up and started spilling colourful tales of her family’s many vacations while skillfully threading this direct descendant of Mnr Kramer’s Volksiebus through afternoon traffic.

Driving hard, uphill and/or in town will tilt 10L/100km but a relaxed cruise can dip into the mid-sevens and many of our journeys ended with 89L/100km on the instrument cluster's basic multi-function display. This unit, together with various trim, convenience and lighting features, is reserved for Comfortline Kombis and their more luxurious interiors.

All seats tilt and fold in many ways yet the only way to get a flat surface is with a set of spanners and some of my camping buddies. Which boils down to the same thing. Still, everyone in attendance was curious and had mostly praise to bestow on Volkswagen’s big people mover.

Meanwhile, I was silently listening on the passenger seat and trying to drink in the whole Kombi-ness of it all. Geez Louise, this is a massive car. And at 4.89m from nose to tail, our test car isn’t even the longest available model. Other noteworthy dimensions are 1.99m height and 1.9m width (excluding mirrors).

All Kombis feature eight seats, Climatic air-conditioning, sun rollers, full size spare wheels, a radio/CD sound system, eight speakers, two airbags, a full raft of 3-point seatbelts, ISOFIX anchors, alarm, immobilizer, reading lights, 12V sockets, as well as ABS, EBD, ESP, an electronic differential and EBC (engine brake control).

Available in either Trendline or Comfortline trim, you can also choose from two engine specifications and up to three gearboxes; this seven-speed "DSG" dual-clutch automatic transmission being the latest addition to the range and previously only available in long wheelbase Comfortline or Transporter/CrewBus models.

Where old Kombis only had one sliding door, these new ones have one on either side. Presumably this is to help with catching obstinate children or assisting tourists who insist on embarking from the wrong side of the road. Both slidey doors feature child-safe locks, heatinsulating glass and sliding windows.

Our Kombi’s 2.0 TDi engine makes 103kW or 340Nm to reach 100km/h in 14.7 seconds (we got a blistering 12.26 at sea level) or an alleged top speed of 172km/h. Trendline models can also be had with a weaker (75kW/250Nm) engine while luxurious Caravelle models get the uprated 132kW Bi-TDi motor.

After finally having nicked this Kombi's key off my spouse, I rapidly set off for a guys' long weekend of camping and general misbehaving. Traveling at the posted limit is no sweat for this bus, road holding is commendable for a two-ton bread box and overtaking at highway speeds simply takes a bit of forward planning.

The rear air-conditioning (once activated by the master switch) has its own controls, there are enormous storage binnacles in the front doors, a card holder and covered 12V socket on top of the dashboard, as well as daytime running lights in case someone somehow overlooked a gigantic rectangle on wheels hurtling towards them. Right. Should you wish to buy one of these comfortable vans, set aside at least N$549,500 for this specific model. The simpler Trendline is N$62,000 cheaper while the long-wheelbase costs a reasonable N$8,000 more. All Kombis are shipped with a 3year/120,000km warranty and a maintenance plan for five years or 60,000km . The new T6 model (see photo top right) is expected soon which means you'll find runout stock of this accomplished T5 model at great prices! Dawid and his red shoes are not included but, judging by the many happy faces and vibrant stories this car drew out of my loved ones, the Kombi retains its best feature: it’s ready for your new road trip memories.

Coupé

H Huis se prys. 'n That's what the new S65 AMG Coupé costs.

Not only did my most recent test car grab the crown for the most expensive car I’ve ever driven, it also sparked furious debates about the unsavory question of price and value. Three million bucks is what the brand-new S65 AMG Coupé will cost you, without options of course. And while you could get yourself a pretty lekker huis for that kind of cash, there are a few things you should know. For a shocking start, this isn’t even the most expensive Benz available – that honour goes to fully armour-plated versions of other big Mercs and they tend to cost at least double this. Yes, double. Secondly – and I find this quite important – the S-Class Coupé is a car for the filthy rich. Double-platinum rock stars, Oscarnominated actors, oil tycoons, property moguls, investment bankers and anyone else who’s long passed the point of complaining about DSTv or converting to energy-saving light bulbs. Another consideration is the car’s maintenance which should be palatable under its 6-year/100,000km warranty and maintenance plan but be warned that these leviathans cannot be run on a shoestring budget. A rear tyre costs N$4,900. The shocks are N$28,000. Each.

The 65 AMG version is for the über-mega rich who want to make the ultimate statement of excess while enjoying the best technology and performance that Mercedes-Benz can offer in a two-door coupé. Order the AMG GT if you want even more sportiness but get this massive coupé for crossing countries with three friends. Just don’t forget your trust fund’s holding company’s platinum petrol card as the 6litre 36-valve twin-turbo V12 uses at least 12L/100km to produce 463kW (630hp) or 1,000Nm from 2,300rpm. With a 92L tank, that translates into a 760km range on the open road and about half of that around town. Why? Twelve cylinders use a lot of juice, even under partial load and when they grant you this level of performance, you simply have to indulge in it. Drop all four windows to hear a hoarse, tug-boaty gurgle in the lower rev range or stomp on the far right pedal for a sonorous 12-pot growl; and white knuckles. Even with 285mm wide lawn rollers for rear tyres, this car struggled for grip in first and second gear, only unleashing its biblical thrust from 120km/h onwards.

Our best 0-100km/h time was 4.46 seconds (claimed 4.1) but passing the 400m mark is way more revealing: just 12.6 seconds at almost 190km/h. The AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed automatic transmission can even get stroppy during such hooliganism, popping or crackling between gears in Sport and Manual mode (with beautiful metal paddles). In its default “Comfort” mode, unless you drive like a complete moron, the big AMG feels composed and surefooted. You need to be alert on full throttle but – trust me on this – it never lasts more than a few seconds because of traffic laws and your sense of self-preservation. And once the novelty of wincing passengers wears off, you’ll soon discover that half-throttle forays are more enjoyable for more of the time. They will also bring consumption back under 25L/100km. No jokes. The Mercedes S65 AMG Coupé may be over-motorised yet that’s its biggest party trick - riotous power reserves and that wonderful feeling of tapping from a bottomless barrel. Its air suspension also offers three modes – Comfort, Sport and Dynamic Curve for leaning into corners like a motorbike. Yet again, no jokes.

Paired to those massive tyres, countless selectable driving aids and the adaptive suspension with road scanning, you can enjoy excellent comfort, superb grip and good turn-in from the half-alcantara AMG steering wheel. Point its massive nose at a highway and the S65 Coupé impresses even more. Perhaps I should finally talk about this car’s design which is so far removed from Mercs of old that people stop in traffic to take photos, make random u-turns and give chase or – when parked – may drape themselves over the car for some selfies. If you’re new in town and looking to make friends, this car can help.

cornering lumbar support, heating, venting or multiple massages. Alas, the rear pews aren’t as generous nor do they offer the same amount of leg room. Over and above stuff like powered and auto everything, an S65 Coupé also spoils you with gigantic TFT (split-view) infotainment screen and instruments, Keyless Go, Night Vision, changeable perfume and ambient lighting, 3D navigation and a high-end Burmester surround system. Those are just a few of the many, many standard features in this vehicle because Mercedes-Benz fitted every conceivable automotive luxury to the S65 AMG Coupé.

Our test mule got maximum attention due to its matt grey designo paint (N$52,500), matt black 20-inch AMG wheels (a no cost option), Swarovski crystals (N$47,900) in the intelligent LED headlights, Magic Sky roof (N$60,000) and the only option worth having in a 250km/h tank - carbon-ceramic brakes (N$120,900).

Combined with its stylish looks, supercar power outputs and unbelievably clever chassis, this vehicle probably represents the pinnacle of modern motoring.

The exterior’s bold lines are contrasted well by the softer, more gently flowing interior. The huge AMG front seats are exceptionally comfy and offer active

But to be completely honest, I am not the clientele this car is aimed at. They have five companies, thirty fleet C-Classes and three huisies by die see.

Does that justify its outrageous price? Yes, I think it does. Would I buy an S65 two-door? No, I’d rather buy a C-Class and a holiday home.

KNOWLEDGE: TYRES

Know your

TYRES TYPES OF TYRES

BIAS / CROSS-PLY This is an outdated method of constructing a tyre which uses diagonal cords and successive plies at opposing angles basically that means the hardy inside of the tyre forms a cross pattern. The advantage of cross-ply tyres was superb comfort, but their flexible nature meant increased rolling resistance, less control and less traction. Some of these are still made in limited quantities for collector vehicles.

RADIAL

You'll find these on most modern vehicles, some sources saying that radials conquered 100% of the new car market in the 1980's. Using ply cords or steel belts laid at approximately right angles, advantages of this rigid tyre include longer tread life, better steering control and low rolling resistance. Downsides are a harder ride and less grip at low speeds.

RUN FLAT

A tyre that is designed to resist deflation when punctured and - in some instances - to keep going at low speeds for limited distances; depending on the type of tyre. Run-flats tend to have thicker sidewalls and weigh more than a regular tyre, which results in a harder ride, higher rolling resistance and reduced fuel efficiency. Advantages are a degree of safety and no need for a spare tyre - in the right conditions.

GESKIEDENIS

Borgward

Text Dr Hans Heese Images Various sources

Op 1 Januarie 1958 het die Cape Times as volg oor Gerald Wolman se span berig: "The smart Wolman Motors team of three Borgwards, a Goliath and a Lloyd drew whistles of admiration at the scrutineering on Monday night.

"Painted in team colours of grey and maroon, they are to take part in the saloon car and other preliminary events this afternoon."

As a belated happy birthday to Namibia, we've made a wee list of some cars which were also born in 1990.

ASIA Rocsta

HONDA NSX

HYUNDAI ELANTRA LOTUS OMEGA

MERCEDES 500E

RENAULT CLIO

VOLVO 940/960

Derived from a military 4x4, the South Korean Rocsta was a four-wheel drive vehicle built by Asia Motors Corporation until 1997. The company was a subsidiary of Kia Motors but closed its doors in 1998. The Rocsta was built with a 1.8L petrol or 2.2L diesel.

The NSX ("New Sportscar Experiment") was built by Honda (sold as an Acura in the U.S.) until 2005. We've had the pleasure of driving one; and it's amazing how advanced it was for its time, with tight handling and an 8,000rpm V6 wrapped in an easy-to-use sportscar.

Yup, 1990 also saw the birth of a great name at Hyundai; although this range was not to the standard of modern Hyundais. This first model ran until 1995, the sleek version in today's showrooms is the South Korean's fifth Elantra model which was launched in 2011.

As another M5 hunter, this W124 was hand-built by Porsche for Mercedes. It used the 500SL's 5L 326hp V8 engine. Only made with left-hand-drive, we know of two in South Africa and one in Namibia - but rumour has it that it's a 6-litre version... Built until 1994 as the E500.

The French maker's first version of their best-seller unfortunately didn't come to Southern Africa but was sold elsewhere from 1990. Its debut was, quite fittingly, at the Paris Motor Show of the same year. Generation II appeared in 1998 and that's the version we first saw.

It was a scarce car in Namibia, due to sanctions against South Africa in this period. The 900Series cars from Sweden were the last rear-wheel-drive Volvos and among the first to assume the company's new model codes, in this case "S90" and "V90" towards the end of their production in 1998.

Using a Vauxhaul (Opel) Omega sedan, Lotus shoved in a twin-turbo straight six (3.6L) with 377hp to give BMW's M5 a headache. Also called Lotus Carlton, only 950 were built until 1992 with a six-speed manual gearbox. Top speed was 283km/h.
