Mitsubishi Motors S.A. has reaffirmed its commitment to child safety by supporting Wheel Well, an organisation committed to children’s invehicle safety. "Safety is one of the biggest considerations when families shop for an SUV such as the ASX," according to Mr Braam Faul, the National Marketing Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa. "Although we emphasise the benefits of our vehicles' safety features, more emphasis will be placed on child safety in the future." Research shows that less than 10% of children in S.A. are properly restrained.

FIAT’s New 500

AUDI R8 is World Performance Car The Audi R8 Coupé has been named “World Performance Car 2016”. The World Car Awards took place at the New York Auto Show. With a total of four awards, the R8 is the most successful model in World Car Awards. The previous R8 had already won two World Performance Car awards (2008, 2010) and a World Car Design of the Year award (2008) in the prestigious competition.

The second generation of the high-performance sports car from Audi was able to win over the jury of 73 leading automotive journalists from around the world. This makes the R8 a winner on the road and the racetrack - it contains the know-how acquired from the brand’s many wins in motor racing. The new Audi R8 Coupé will be launched in South Africa in July this year.

Fiat 500: the 'great little car', of which nearly 3.8 million were sold, was born in 1957. Fifty years later, Fiat chose to capitalise on that heritage and launched the new 500; it was an immediate success. Eight years later, with over 1.5 million sold; the New 500 is preparing to take on new market challenges without forgetting its own deep roots. Featuring refreshed exterior and interior design, it has not grown in size but sports more technology, engine versions and customisation ideas: only in this way can the icon evolve.

BMW celebrates its 100th birthday

The new Tiguan, which kicks off a new SUV offensive by VW, is due here in late 2016. It’s the first Volkswagen SUV to be based on the modular MQB platform, and sets new standards in design, comfort and functionality. This does not compromise its off-road abilities which include a rugged all-wheel drive system and premium class technology for use on and off the highway.

With more than 500,000km on his ‘96 Opel Kadett, Gavin Wiseman says it’s not just a means of transport, as he affectionately refers to it as his "Opal" (old pal). Mr. Wiseman purchased the Opel in 1998 from Reeds N1 City with 44,000km and said that is has never missed a beat mechanically, despite the high mileage. The Ford Motor Company is investing 2.5 billion Rand to expand operations in South Africa at its Silverton Plant in Pretoria, to produce the allnew Ford Everest, along with the new Ford Ranger that was launched last year. This investment will create about 1,200 new jobs at Ford South Africa and within the supplier network. Silverton joins AutoAlliance in Thailand, Chennai in India and JMC Xiaolan in China as production hubs for Everest.

MAZDA produces one-millionth MX-5 Mazda’s MX-5 reached one million units on 22 April; the company began making the roadster at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima in April 1989. “From the first generation to today's fourth-generation model, the reason we have been able to continue selling the MX-5 for all these years is the strong support of fans around the world," said the

SOUTH AFRICAN Festival of Motoring The South African Festival of Motoring will take place at the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit in Midrand (Gauteng, South Africa) from 31 August to 4 September 2016. Among the major companies confirmed as participants at the show are: BMW, Porsche, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz. S.A.'s largest automotive finance house, Wesbank, has already been confirmed as the headline sponsor.

SUZUKI has a new, compact workhorse! The brand-new Suzuki Super Carry compact bakkie made its world dé but recently – and Southern Africa is the first market outside of India to introduce the newcomer. The ultra-compact bakkie, with cab-over design and a large load deck, is aimed at business owners seeking a lightweight workhorse with low running costs.

Super Carry benefits from the brand’s enviable service reputation and reliability. Now in its 11th generation, Super Carry was launched in Japan back in 1961 under the Suzulight banner. NISSAN GT-R drifts at 305km/h Nissan has set the Guinness World Records title for the fastest ever drift. The record was broken with a speed of 304.96 km/h and a 30° angle using a specially-tuned MY16 Nissan GT-R. The Japanese drift champion Masato Kawabata clinched top spot from former record holder Jakub Przygoń ski of Poland.

The record was set during a special event at the Fujairah International Airport, UAE. The record-breaking Nissan GT-R was developed with the support of Nismo specialists. It was tuned to 1,380hp and adapted so all the power went to the rear wheels. It was prepared by GReddy Trust and tested extensively at Japan’s Fuji Speedway.

Toyota was top performer in South Africa for the fourth consecutive month in 2016; the new Hilux and Fortuner helped the brand head off its nearest competitor. Toyota recorded 8,791 sales in April; a lead of 2,529 units over its nearest rival. The new Hilux already found 3,221 homes and the freshlyminted Fortuner achieved a segment-leading 846 sales - a figure it notched up in just 14 retail days.

Especially at higher speeds, I found that I had to change down too often, sometimes two or three gears, because the motor lacked torque. I hasten to add that this car

only had 2,500km on the clock and was probably still waking up. Another noteworthy item was the Astra’s automatic start/stop system. Usually, these tend to awaken when you depress the clutch but here it only wakes up when you release the brake; like an automatic. Yet again it’s not a concern and never presented realworld issues; it just takes some getting used to. One thing I could certainly get used to was the Astra’s frugal consumption. Opel’s optimistic average claim is 5.1L/100km but we got an admirable 6.5 on the open road and seven to eight in town. Filling the Astra’s 48L tank (at a current cost of about 600 bucks) translates into a range between 600 and 700km. Like most of its rivals, Opel offers various engines and trim levels for the Astra. Every model has decent specifications and thus, not many options left to tick. There’s also an automatic 1.4 turbo. Prices range from about N$260,000 to N$411,000 with this 1.4 Sport nudging the upper end of that scale.

It appears that the car industry is in rude health because every week we witness the launch of a new model. Usually another crossover, designed to plug a gap nobody had thought of yet. Thank Goodness there are still vehicles that don’t try to be everything to everyone – like the new smarts. Our bulging egos and rapidly reducing attention spans have given birth to vehicles that try to blend every imaginable scenario into a four-wheeled shape but – caution, spoiler alert – the end results tend to be compromised in all the wondrous ways we want them to work. Not so with a smart, especially the tiny fortwo city car. The manufacturer published a very poignant commercial a few years ago which pokes fun at our crazy love for city 4x4’s. It sees a fortwo failing miserably at offroading and a large SUV crawl past a tiny city parking bay – which the fortwo city slicker then takes. Like, LOL. The fortwo first saw light of day back in 1998, its “smart” name apparently harking back to the cooperation between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz: “Swatch Mercedes ART”. With just two seats and less than three meters in length, this truly is the perfect city car. So perfect, in fact, that it has found over 1.5 million owners. Powered by 600 or 700cc turbopetrol three-cylinder engines, it was replaced by generation two in 2007. This was sold until recently with a comparatively enormous 1-litre engine and additional luxuries on some models.

Over the years I’ve made a few conclusions about cars and I’m more than happy to share one of them with you now. If you’re after a fast, exciting car, run your finger to the most powerful end of a showroom price list and slide it down one notch. That’s right, don’t buy a BMW M3. Buy a 340i.

If bigger really is always better probably depends on who you ask so let’s keep our minds out of the gutter and firmly pinned on automobiles.

With global trends of dwindling resources and heavier traffic, rising taxes and fuel bills, it’s no wonder Audi decided to shove its Q7 flagship SUV into the gym.

Our GPS testing equipment spat out a GTi-scaring 6.63 seconds to a hundred kays an hour. Another test I subjected this car to was mild off-roading of the farm / veld variety; which it aced. (N$32,000 extra) for excellent ride comfort and stability. The only real drawback is the car’s sizable body which you don’t want to scratch. That also applies to the Q7’s use around town, as illustrated by one of our testers when she had a meeting in the city centre and nervously asked “don’t we have another car?” The Q7 is big. It’s amazingly easy to drive and feels quite light on its feet but we urge any potential owners to order every available parking aid option. One thing I wanted to yank out of the car was its auto-parking brake. Although selectable, this bothersome nanny comes on when you least expect it. In slow traffic. While parking. Or when crawling into your messy garage. Added to the grabby brakes (at low speeds), it’s probably just a safety net between the Q7’s heft and inexperienced drivers.

Does that mean that this huge car is a pointless, flashy, gross ego extension? Maybe for some but we found the new Audi Q7’s calling through a combination of many factors. Take one long journey, throw in country roads in varying states of disrepair, add a dash of dirt or rain, mix with at least four tall adults and blend until happy. Yes, there are cheaper, smaller and more efficient ways to travel but if you like to partake in big trips with many people of the big variety, an Audi Q7 will be just what you need. Its smooth V6 even sounds good and can be relatively fuel-efficient - Audi claims 6.3L/100km while our average for the 2-ton behemoth came to just under nine. The privilege of driving Audi’s biggest car will set you back at least N$980,000 without spaceage options. So it isn’t just about size, it’s how well you use it...
