Toyota S.A. has retained its position as market leader with 7,528 sales during the holiday month of April. This put Toyota 1,767 units ahead of its closest contender, and resulted in a market share of 21,5% for the month. April remained a favourable month for Toyota on the SUV front with 985 Fortuner and 426 RAV4 units finding new homes, placing Toyota at the forefront of the large and the medium SUV segments.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter started this year with a new record: From January through March 2017, Mercedes-Benz Vans delivered about 45,000 units of the large and capable van to customers all over the world. This figure represents growth of about 10 percent compared with the prior-year period. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter therefore achieved its most successful first quarter in its history of over 20 years.

The Nissan GT-R remains the fastest supercar at the Simola Hill Climb, proved by Wilhelm Baard, Reghard Roets and the R35 Nissan GT-R. Baard repeated his successful 2011 King of the Hill victory by shattering the 40-second barrier on the last shootoutrun for a best time of 39.892 seconds. It is the first time in the history of the competition that a supercar broke this psychological barrier on the mountain road.

Following reports of a vehicle transporter catching fire on the N2 highway near George, the organisers of the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb confirmed that the truck was carrying vehicles that had competed in the event over the weekend. Thankfully there were no reports of injuries. One of the vehicles reportedly caught fire while in transit, resulting in the fire spreading rapidly and hence causing extensive damage to the vehicles.

South Africa's ultimate braai masters have received their ultimate car from Suzuki Auto S.A. - a new Grand Vitara 2.4i Summit valued at R442 900. Team Salty Flames, which comprises Chanel Marais and partner Nick Perfect, beat nine other teams to win the coveted title of Ultimate Braai Master in South Africa. As a reward, they take home a brand-new Grand Vitara and other prizes valued at over R1 million in total.

General Motors and Isuzu Motors recently announced their respective future plans for the Isuzu, Chevrolet and Opel brands in South Africa. Isuzu intends to purchase the GM light commercial vehicle manufacturing operations. The Opel brand was sold to PSA (Peugeot Citroen) earlier this year. GM intends to cease manufacturing and selling of Chevrolet vehicles in the South African market by the end of 2017.

JAGUAR F-Pace wins double award HYUNDAI Santa Fe reaches the Antarctic Hyundai Motor Co. recently made history when a nearstandard 2.2L diesel Santa Fe became the first passenger vehicle to be driven across the Antarc continent from Union Camp to McMurdo and back again. The car was driven by Patrick Bergel, the great grandson of the legendary polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. The epic journey, which took place in December 2016, was timed to commemorate the

centenary of Sir Shackleton's rather heroic Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914 to 1916, and was made into a short film by Hyundai. This was shown for the first time at an event on 20 April at the Hospital Club, London, in the United Kingdom. The 30-day expedition saw the Santa Fe, which was only modified to ride on giant lowpressure tyres, take on the almost 5,800km of icy terrain in bitter conditions.

The Jaguar F-PACE is the best and most beautiful car in the world after double success at the 2017 World Car Awards, scooping the prestigious World Car of Year and World Car Design of the Year titles. The performance SUV is the fastest selling model Jaguar has produced and is only the second vehicle to claim the historic double in the 13-year history of the awards. To win the pair of trophies, FPACE saw off the competition in a vote of 75 top influential motoring journalists from 24 countries.

Golf & GTi

“Driving the GTi feels fast with the DSG gearbox changing cogs without you even realising it...”

Volkswagen’s F Golf range continues to set the trend - we attended the recent launch.

When thinking about the Golf, my personal recollection is the vivid memory of my childhood friend, whose father owned a Golf GTi Mk2. It became a family member, a car that stayed in the family for 18 years. At the end, the car and family only separated due to unfortunate circumstances. In fact, until today it is likely that you’ll hear a similar story from GTi (or Golf) owners. Why is this the case and why do we stumble upon the Golf GTi brand so frequently? Why have 33 million Golfs found homes in the past 43 years (35 years in South Africa)? Well, Volkswagen South Africa invited us to see for ourselves. We would get two days and 600km on the open roads from Port Elizabeth to Graaf-Reinet just to experience the new Golf Mk 7 (facelift) range.

5-Series

5

“The new 5 Series is a hoot to drive and to be driven in.”

An A alluring blend of luxury, performance and refinement - this is the new 5-Series.

I guess that in a world of metric measurements it is not that kosher to describe the new generation 5Series BMW as a “mile muncher” but that alliterative description does fit the bill. If you’re familiar with previous BMW model nomenclatures (such as E28 or E39, for example), you might be rather puzzled as to why this newlywrought model carries the new G30 moniker... but that is not nearly as relevant as what lies in store for motorists looking to get their hands on a thoroughly convincing luxury sedan endowed with typically BMW sporting genes. The G30 clearly spent some time in the gym during its gestation as it’s shed up to100kg compared with its predecessor. You can thank the use of more aluminium and stronger steel for this just as you can thank the BMW styling studio for making the newcomer look a fair bit sleeker than its mildly portly predecessor. Sadly though, the world is moving away from sedans, and that even includes premium iterations such as this, so the marketing people will have their work cut out to convince potential buyers that the new “Five” really is the way to go. On launch, four models were listed, these being the 1,995cc 520d, the 1,998cc 530i, the 2,993cc 530d and the range-topping 2,998cc 540i. The first two models listed are each propelled by four cylinders which mean that lovely BMW six-cylinder thrum is a thing of the past thanks in part to the clean air merchants. But for traditionalists, 530d and 540i retain the famed BMW six-cylinder configuration albeit that their turbocharging stifles the glorious exhaust note we all drooled over in the past!

Next up was the more sporty 540i (250kW) which put its 50% greater displacement to good use with real surging acceleration and a delicious yet restrained thrum from under the bonnet. The penalty is extracted at the pumps but our average figure of 12.2L/100km isn’t too bad. Without a doubt though, the star of the G30 show is the 195kW 530d. The likely demise of the turbodiesel engine within a decade is rather hard to stomach when a power plant like this one delivers such a convincing performance while consuming fuel at just 7.7L/100km even with rather liberal use of the throttle. Here’s a compression-ignition motor that masks any knocking uncannily successfully at low revs while also delivering a pleasant if subdued hum at higher revolutions. And no-one can sneeze at a 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds. All models feature the familiar and smooth-acting ZF eight-speed auto which sees service in the 5-Series’ competitive makes too, albeit that each manufacturer tweaks software to suit. Refinement too is top class. Wind noise is beautifully masked and mechanical commotion for the most part is non-existent. On some older, coarse tar surfaces, road roar can make itself heard but given the size of most wheel/tyre combinations, this is hardly surprising. Two issues though did surprise us to some extent. The variable-ratio steering for example, even with Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steer) on board, feels a little woolly around the centre position and for me, a little too light at all times.

Our first on-road acquaintance was with the 200kW twin-scroll turbocharged 530i, which only betrayed its four cylinder layout at very high revs..

Many drivers will probably like the easy feel but for a sporty BMW, it feels just a tad disconnected. In the same vein, I have little doubt that the majority of drivers will like the slightly soft suspension set-up which enhances the long-distance comfort with no loss of control.

Power delivery is linear which tells you that turbo lag is not an issue and for the most part, there is more than adequate muscle on hand to deal with all terrains... including steep mountain passes.

Let’s just say that the new 5-Series has moved more in the direction of the 7 Series in terms of dynamic feel which could just account for the “Business Athlete” tag bestowed on it by its makers.

Open the door of any model and you will be greeted by a classy interior finished to very high standards and equipped with all the latest gizmos, the extent of which is dependent on how far you wish to dip into the nearendless options list. Its cabin material selection (with the small exception of the mostly-hidden steering column shroud that looks and feels plasticy) is impeccable and the car’s seat comfort / adjustability, including any rear passenger space, is nigh on perfect. The new dashboard design however, lacks the modernity and drama of that in the E-Class while the overall execution doesn’t match the subtle yet classy simplicity delivered by an Audi but the cabin still feels really good and sports an amazing array of modern niceties. The configurable virtual instrument display is very clear and informative while the 5-Series’ updated central infotainment screen will keep you entertained for an eternity. When it comes to tech, this Beemer takes second place to no-one. For example, the list also includes a night camera, on-board wi-fi, a concierge service (which successfully passed our test), as well as such niceties as massaging seats with configurable side bolsters. Further, and I’ve only hinted at how many options are available in terms of the car’s dynamic configuration, the number of comfort and aesthetic combinations such as wheel / tyre and colour / interior demands that you visit a BMW website such as you’ll find at www.bmw.co.za The new 5-Series is a hoot to drive and to be driven in. It has morphed into something of a compact 7-Series through offering a raft of luxuries and a relaxed drive underwritten by peachy refinement levels. Under the skin, there’s a sporting BMW waiting to be unleashed when the mood takes. So, the latest G30 iteration may not be the plushest of the luxury middle weight sedans, nor is it the outright sportiest, but this new BMW blends the two attributes better than any of its rivals so it retains its crown as the best all-rounder, full stop.

Etios Sprint

WHY YOU SHOULD SERVICE YOUR CAR

Audi

SAFETY FEATURE

Servicing your car makes it last longer and perform better

You’re joking, right?

What options are there?

Nope, afraid not. There are people who don’t know that a car needs regular maintenance. We once met someone whose three-year old car had done about 40,000km without a single service. When asked why, the owner replied “because it doesn’t need one, it’s running just fine!”

• If your car is still under warranty and/or has a service plan, only take it to the dealer you bought it from.

So, dear car owners: even if your beloved chariot is “running just fine”, it won’t be forever if you neglect to service it!

But, why?

• Independent (non-approved) workshops are a good option for older vehicles and often represent the most affordable way to keep your car going. In any case, shop around for the best prices!

To simplify it, your car has MANY moving parts which either need lubrication, periodic attention or eventual replacement. If one (or more) of these fail, it could lead to your car performing badly, causing extensive damage or breaking down!

• Doing it yourself is definitely an alternative if you have an older vehicle and a keen sense for car maintenance. Some brand workshops even sell do-it-yourself service kits for older cars.

What should I budget?

OK, what else?

If you don’t have the luxury of a maintenance or service plan (which pays for some or all work), the servicing of your car may get expensive. We strongly advise spending as much as you can, even investing in preventative maintenance, but if your wallet is suffering you could consult an expert mechanic to advise you on which items are the most essential to your car’s health.

Modern cars usually tell you when they need a bit of servicing but as your car gets older, it’s advisable to schedule more regular maintenance. If you do a lot of mileage, the service intervals will be much shorter, but even someone who drives very little should have their car checked (at least) once a year. Regular services will also be a bonus if you ever want to sell your car!

• Should your vehicle be out of warranty or any service agreements, it’s always advisable to take it back to the brand dealership as they best know the product and servicing procedures.

SAFETY TIPS

TRAFFIC LIGHT Our keen sense of eyesight informs us on a daily basis that some of y’all don’t know (or remember) what a traffic light is for. Here is a quick refresher course for everyone’s benefit:

RED MEANS STOP Seriously, STAHP! A red light means that the other side is now green and any attempt to cross the intersection will either cause a crash or a very unpleasant meeting with Dik Frik in his ‘Cruiser bakkie.

AMBER MEANS CAUTION When the middle amber (orange) light comes on, ideally you should stop for the imminent red light but if you are already in the intersection at the time, you may pass. Amber DOES NOT mean speed up! What always appeals to us is how customisable it is. And judging by the ones on the road, people really do.

What you need to know: The Range Rover Evoque actually started life as the LRX concept car from 2008.

Some people are repulsed by its looks but we're ignoring them. Also, we don’t care about its numbers, specs or irrelevant technical terms.

Completely overwhelmed by the public's approval, Land Rover simply had to build it; the first Evoques appeared in 2011 and are a huge success for the brand.

Watch out for: Evoques are You don't consider buying an expensive (but exclusive) Evoque, you yearn for it. Same goes for the Discovery Sport, which looks like an Evoque, but it replaced the Freelander which isn't a real Discovery. Get it? Me neither. Some more facts: What you need to know is that any Evoque is a thing of style and class.

GREEN IS GOOD The green light at the bottom is your friend. When it’s on, all is well with the world. You may proceed. Your ex wants you back, that itchy rash disappears and you win the lottery. Do we have lotto in Namibia?

DKW

Audi

GESKIEDENIS

Text Dr Hans Heese Images Various sources

in 1933, kort na Hitler se bewindsoorname, deur Haak's Garage in Pretoria en Johannesburg bemark. Waarskynlik was alle voertuie swart – tensy ek iets gemis het.
