Lucky Number 13. These two digits can produce superstition in most people, give random Fridays a bad rep or make airlines skip entire rows...
While we’re on that subject, NamWheels is very keen to integrate as many of our reader’s wishes into future editions. What do you want to see in NamWheels?
My lovely wife made me realise that 13 is just a number and those bad vibes are probably in your head. Actually, thirteen is my better half’s lucky number because hardly anyone chooses the unloved and indivisible digits.
Let us know by sending us an email, ecard, sms, voicemail, tweet, Facebook comment, WhatsApp or mailing pigeon. And thanks to the magic of digital content, here are direct links to all these mediums where you may contact us:
Perhaps this scenario spurred us on to finally go ahead with this alldigital, 13th version of Namibia’s favourite free and independent motoring newspaper.
“What do you want to see in NamWheels?”
NamWheels has been around for almost two years and it took us a dozen printed editions to brave online-only status. For now, we’ll continue to print NamWheels every two months but digital editions like this one should bridge the gaps. Online publications bring a vast amount of advantages with them, never mind the reduced cost and environmental impact of printing. We can now share cool links, videos and online content with you!

As for lucky edition 13, these following pages hold our usual news and new model announcements from the industry, as well as road tests, technical knowledge and NamTrader classified adverts.
We’ve also launched a digital interactive survey for Your favourite car of 2016. Turn to page 13 for more details. There’s that number again... Hanjo Stier Editor
The first design drafts and business plans for NamWheels were done in 2009. It took almost five years to launch the free newspaper.

The event starts on 4 November with an Opel ADAM being given away every day for 31 days with a total value of over R7 million!
Nissan South Africa has created a special NP200 for bakkielovers seeking the perfect partner for their adventurous lifestyle, while allowing them to stand out from the crowd. The all-new Nissan NP200 ICE is the coolest half-tonne pickup to have rolled off Nissan’s Rosslyn production line. The South African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association has announced Volkswagen as the Manufacturer of The Year (MOTY) in the car rental sector for the seventh consecutive year. Ford's Everest is set to make an even greater impact on the local market when an expanded range goes on sale in November. With Job 1 for Everest production starting recently at the worldclass Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, it signals the start of a new era for Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) as it becomes a two-vehicle assembly facility that also produces the Ranger for export to 148 markets in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
SHAPE THE FUTURE WITH THE ICONIC PRIUS
TOYOTA sponsors Agri SA Awards For years, Toyota South Africa Motors has sponsored two coveted awards in the Agriculture industry. The Agri SA Toyota Young Farmer of the Year and Toyota New Harvest of the Year awards were presented to the winners at a gala event in Johannesburg on 27 October. Each winner drove away in a brand new Hilux worth just under R400 000. Jacques Beukes, a table grape and pears farmer from the De Doorns region of South Africa’s Western Cape received the 2016 Agri SA Toyota Young Farmer of the Year award. André Cloete, a farmer from the Overberg area won the 2016 New Harvest of the Year award.
The Next Generation MERCEDES Concept X-Class bakkie With the Concept X-CLASS, Mercedes-Benz Vans gives a concrete outlook on its new pickup, the X-Class. The first premium pickup will combine the best of two worlds. This is demonstrated with two design variants of the concept. The Concept X-CLASS powerful adventurer illustrates that the X-Class will have the strengths of a classic pickup - tough, functional, and with off-road capability. The Concept X-CLASS stylish explorer shows what will distinguish the pickup bearing the Mercedes star. The X-Class will be a true Mercedes from the hallmark brand design and comfort to the driving dynamics and safety. This will make Mercedes-Benz the first premium manufacturer to account for the changing customer requirements in the global segment of mid-size pickups, and it will make the tough one-ton pickup with seating for up to five persons the first to be attractive as an urban lifestyle and family vehicle. NamWheels attended the Concept reveal and will publish more details soon!

Volkswagen se nuwe
NOVEMBER 2016
Tiguan

H Thousands of kilometers through Namibia with an Opel Mokka - what’s it like?
We all know them, those long ribbons of tarmac which lead us to the next town. Usually dead-straight, kissing the hazy horizon and made from 50 shades of grey. Out here you need a proper car, something comfortable with great tunes and a fuel-efficient engine.
We weren't in a haring hurry. With plenty of time to get to our various destinations, we slotted smooth music into the radio / CD / mp3 / USB / Aux / Bluetooth sound system and cruised at (or below) the speed limits. The result? Relaxing journeys with an overall average fuel use of just 7L/100km. Opel Between all the testers at NamWheels claims 6.4 from the 52L tank. we've probably driven most Namibian tar roads with every type of car you care Had we not explored various towns to mention. Whichever one you fancy, rest assured that we gave the Mokka a thorough testing over thousands of Namibian kilometers; and it never failed to impress. If you're looking for an agile, frugal, city SUV which can also handle long distances (and the odd farm track), we highly recommend this new Opel!

H Mercedes has made its new C-Class more dynamic than ever - but is it any good?

Acceleration Video! I can vividly remember the first Mercedes C-Class, a gracious yet demure car whose understated elegance and multitude of models lured new customers to the brand. By adding more vitality to each subsequent model, the C-Class caught up to its dynamic rivals while attracting younger drivers.
What that means, though, is that the CClass handles more like a sports sedan. Especially when selecting Sport or Sport+, our test car alienated its roots even further. Snappy power, nippy cornering and hard up-shifts with exhaust burps are very unMercedes but oh-so exciting.
This new model range aims to continue in this tradition by doing the jolly painful split between trusted Benz values and sporty, modern demands.
Deactivating the ESP will even loosen that rear end and our C250 smoked its way to 100km/h in just 6.4 seconds, hitting 400m in 14.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250km/h; all of which is the work of a Judging by first impressions, they pulled it 1,991cc four cylinder turbo-petrol and its off. Its interior is even more astonishing with premium surfaces on multiple levels and a swooping centre console. Condensed button clusters and a multi-function knob (with built-in touch pad) control a superb infotainment system via a seemingly detached, high-res monitor. Compared to the first C-Class, it’s very... umm, bling.
Having spent some time in traffic and on the open road, I’m confident that one could get 7L/100km in both scenarios yet the 250's tempting power reserves may be the undoing of your economy run. One thing’s for certain though, this car cruises and eats kilometres like a proper Mercedes. We felt that road noise was a bit high which is thanks to the (admittedly, stunning) 18inch alloys fitted here. A set of 17-inch wheels might have quieter rubber and could also improve low-speed ride quality.

HALOGEN

NOVEMBER 2016
XENON or H.I.D.
A concept as old as the lightbulb itself, halogen lights have a small filament (very thin wire) which lights up when current passes through it. You may think halogen lights are verby but don’t write off their trusted technology, the ease of fitment and comparatively low replacement costs. • Affordable price, wide choice • Comparatively easy fitment • Least amount of light intensity • Resistance to shock
?
+ -
High-intensity discharge (H.I.D.) lights are a more recent invention and Xenon its most popular form. Its gas (instead of wire) also lights up when annoyed with electricity. H.I.D. lights come in various states / temperatures which affect the colour and brightness of the light. The brighter and often blue/purple beam is superior to halogen lights. • Brighter light • In most cases, better spread • Purchase & replacement price • Costly installation

L.E.D. or Light-Emitting-Diodes have been around for many years but only recently appeared in automotive lights when they reached the required brightness and control. These lights tend to give the best illumination but beware of the local by-laws about the amount of lights on your vehicle! • Excellent light • Long lifespan • Expensive to buy or replace • Multi-beam units upset the law

NOVEMBER 2016
CO2 TAX
Someone S is getting rich from the new CO2 tax, and it’s not even in the right way... Most things in life are bad for you or come at a price and now the air we breathe is more expensive, too. With motorised vehicles being branded the easiest, pardon, biggest scapegoat of global warming, the new CO2 tax is here to punish us for destroying the earth with our dirty, dirty cars. So what is CO2? Carbon-dioxide is a very naughty greenhouse gas which is produced by your car using fuel to move from A to B. Since most people yearn to reach B and we all require fuel to do so, our leaders now ask a chunk of cash from each vehicle sale. Some years ago, a report by the European Union accused motor vehicles of producing 20% of their CO2 output, passenger cars making up a feeble 12% of that.
Electric, hydrogen and hybrids are en vogue, but what’s the electricity production (or battery manufacture and disposal) doing to the poor wittle rain forest? Not content with hacking away at a tiny symptom instead of the major cause, our government recently jumped aboard the CO2 gravy train to force a get-rich-quick tax scheme upon us. Why is it short-sighted? You see, the tax is raked into the country’s coffers according to how much CO2 your new ride puffs out. As CO2 emission is proportionate to engine size, power output and consumption, a small 4-cylinder city runabout will be liable for less tax than the exotic V12 speed machine.
A glaring oversight in this equation is that nobody has thought any further than tomorrow morning and even vaguely considered the notion of a vehicle’s average mileage and lifespan. In other words, usage. No. What we needed was a system that punishes the rich, cripples new car sales and champions the use of boring little economy cars. Most manufacturers now shy away from the big-capacity engines and go for small engines with forced induction (e.g. turbos) to achieve similar power but lower emissions than huge engines. The principle is good because it encourages manufacturers to delve into exciting new technologies, moving the automobile forward.
Imagine 12% in your offspring’s matric exam. Or your salary slip.
Good little car, bad expensive car! It’s a brilliant scheme. Undeniably socialist, but still brilliant. The amount is already included in every car’s price, so the consumers (that’s us) just absorb the umpteenth new car price hike.
The downside is that big, naturallyaspirated engines are dying out very quickly and petrol-heads across the country would do well to buy that meaty V6 or V8 dream car now.
Despite those laughably small numbers, global consciousness and mean greenies insist that cars are destroying the planet and should be outlawed or watered down.
On average, this means that the city runabout will cost a few Dollars more and the flashy car will up its asking price to the tune of, oh, a second-hand city runabout.
Most mechanics will also tell you that huge engines don’t work as hard as tiny turbo motors and hence need less maintenance. So they last longer, too.
Text Anonymous Image Various sources
But back to average mileage and lifespan. For argument’s sake we chose southern Africa’s favourite passenger car, the VW Polo. Good little economy car.
But... Each VW Polo would have produced 10,891,671g in the same time - yup, ten million. And let’s not forget that there was only one Bentley and 1,700 Polos.
As its evil counterpart, we took a Bentley Continental GT from a local car search website. Bad big car!
Which means all Polos would have produced 18,515,840,700 grams of CO2. Times nine (years) makes 166,642,566,300g of CO2 emissions for every Polo built since 2007.
On average, the Polo/Vivo is sold 1,700 times per month, and the Bentley sells at a rate of under one per month. To keep this fair, we agreed on a round one per month. Anyway, by digging a bit deeper in said car website it turns out that, of all the Polos for sale, their average mileage was 74,093km. The 2007 Bentley, which is also older than the average Polo, did 30,000km. I hope you spotted where this is going? A 2007 Polo (with the smallest engine) produces 147g of CO2 per km and the Bentley bellows out 330g of the same stuff per km. If sales figures remained constant since 2007, each horrible Bentley produced 9,900,000g of CO2. Times 12 (sales per year) and nine years makes 1,069,200,000 grams in total. About a billion.
Thus, a 1.4L Polo is, by this equation, 156 times more harmful to the planet than a Continental GT. And let’s not forget about lifespan. After how many years is a multi-million dollar Bentley scrapped? Exactly. So the next time you see a Bentley, give it a warm hug because it’s one of the most environmentally-friendly cars ever made! What they should’ve done is just add another levy to the fuel price. Shout at the website if you want to, but it makes the most sense. If my Polo uses less fuel than your Bentley, I pay less. If I drive further than you do, I pay more. And the more Polos there are, the more fuel they need which, by the way, equals much more money...
