VOLKSWAGEN recalls millions of cars

Sales of electrified BMW’s in the first 3/4 of this year have exceeded those achieved in the entire 2016; in September, electrified sales topped the 10,000 mark for the first time in a single month. With the electrified line-up already totalling nine models, a total of 10,786 (+50.5%) BMW i, BMW iPerformance and MINI Electric vehicles were delivered in September, bringing the year-to-date total to 68,687 (+64.2%).

Ford South Africa is now the official vehicle sponsor for Orlando Pirates, bringing two of the country’s most popular vehicle and sporting brands together for the first time in a three-year partnership. The partnership agreement, which formally kicked-off at the Orlando Stadium on 26 September, encompasses a three-year deal, in which Ford will supply Orlando Pirates with various vehicles across its impressive portfolio.

Volvo Cars has announced that the next generation of the XC90 SUV will be built in its new manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina, from 2021. This takes Volvo Cars’ total investment in its US manufacturing operations to over USD 1.1 billion and will raise the total of new jobs created at the Charleston site to nearly 4 000. The plant will start production of the next generation S60 in the third quarter of 2018.

Mercedes-Benz is the most valuable European premium automotive brand according to the latest rankings of the "Best Global Brands 2017" report published by the wellknown US brand consultancy Interbrand. Coming in at ninth place, the brand is the only European company to rank in the top 10 of the most valuable brands. Compared with last year, the value of the brand grew by 10% to $47.83 billion.

Volkswagen recently issued a recall for over 1.8 million cars in China because of faulty fuel pumps. The defective pump can cause an electronics failure and the vehicle’s engine could stall. VW will replace the pump’s control module in affected cars starting in December. It is unclear if this is part of a global recall but VW rissued a similar fuel pump recall for more than 280,000 vehicles in the United States.

Honda is one of the world’s top 20 brands, according to research by Interbrand in its latest ‘Best Global Brands’ study. Honda has moved up by 3% to be ranked as the 20th most valuable brand in the world. Interbrand puts its value at $22.696 billion. Mr Philip Ross, Senior Vice President of Honda Motor Europe said that “The power of the Honda brand highlights our influential position in the market.”

Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled its next-generation drivetrain technology, and announced plans for its first electric car-sharing program. Alongside the debut of the high-performance i30 N and the sub-compact Kona SUV, the carmaker also revealed the first in its new ‘Smart Stream’ powertrain line-up, combining a Smart Stream 1.6-litre T-GDi engine and Smart Stream wet 8-speed dual clutch transmission.

NamWheels attended Killarney’s 70th and the board unveiling

KILLARNEY turns 70 years old The Killarney International Raceway in the Cape Town northern suburbs recently celebrated its heritage and seventy years of racing since 1947. Four veterans who’ve helped to develop the track were honoured with special service awards. Alderman J-P Smith, as the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Social Services, unveiled a very special commemorative board depicting the track’s history. Sarel van der Merwe, Springbok, eleven times SA Rally champion and racer at the Le Mans and Daytona race tracks, also delivered a special birthday message.

More than a hundred guests who had raced at Killarney or had some connection to the beloved track, gathered at the Clubhouse for the awards presented to Adrian Pheiffer (86), Denis Joubert (82), dr Harry Wade (89) and Brian Hoskins (70). The chairman of the Western Province Motor Club (WPMC), Mr Gavin Cerff, and Killarney’s executive manager, Mr Des Easom, presented the awards together. Ald Smith also congratulated Killarney for being one of the city’s assets... because it was built, financed and expanded without government support or the taxpayer".

FIAT upgrades its Panda for 2017 Fiat Chrysler Automobiles presents the refreshed 2017 Fiat Panda, with the range including the 4x4 and Cross versions for the first time in nearly a decade. Since its local launch in 2013, the range expanded from the “Easy” and “Lounge” versions with front wheel drive for use in the city, to also include the highly anticipated 4x4 and a Cross version, so-called city SUVs. The new Panda represents a new personality and comfort developed to also emphasise different expressions of the model; city car, 4x4 and Cross, all united by its function and relative simplicity. A compact exterior coupled with clever interior space should meet every buyer’s requirement.

HONDA Quest wraps up in Namibia Just twelve days after leaving Windhoek, the Honda Quest convoy finally arrived back at their starting point, tired, happy, content and richer for the experience. Over the course of 12 days, 10 of which were competition days where teams could score points on various skills and tasks, these twenty finalists covered over 2,000km, some over the harshest terrain that this rather arid and sparsely populated country can offer.

Honda Quest did not aim to pick purely the most skilled riders, but instead set out to pick the most versatile team. They were looking for people who showed a keen sense of adventure and were curious about their surroundings. The Quest organisers also wanted to know who would get along with their fellow competitors and could thus contribute to team spirit, as well as taking the initiative with special tasks.

As the very first commercial vehicle manufacturer in the U.S.A., Daimler is now testing connected trucks in so called “platooning operations” on public roads in the US. This was announced at the North American Commercial Vehicle Show (Sept 24th to Sept 28th) in Atlanta. Truck platooning improves safety within these vehicle convoys with connectivity and the automated driving supports truck drivers while enhancing efficiency through closer distances between the connected trucks.

FORD’s new Kuga

HYUNDAI launches its hot i30 N

HAVAL shines at SA Festival of Motoring

The i30 N, revealed to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is Hyundai Motor’s first high-performance car under the N line up. Built on the New Generation i30, the i30 N has been developed from the ground up to deliver maximum driving pleasure in everyday life on the road, as well as on the track. N was born in Namyang, at

Well, that was quick! And what exactly are we talking about? The incredible uptake and enthusiasm the South African market has shown for Haval, which is not only one of the best-selling SUV brands in the world, but also a luxury subbrand of GWM – a nameplate that, in turn, has a proud 10year history in Mzansi.

Hyundai Motor’s global R&D Centre in Korea, and honed at the Nü rburgring, home of Hyundai’s Test Centre. The N logo symbolises a chicane, the ultimate corner where the i30 N has been tested thoroughly and has proven its ability. i30 N is inspired by Hyundai Motorsport’s experience in WRC since 2014.

Indeed, it's quite remarkable to consider that it was only a couple of months back that Haval debuted on our shores with a compact SUV in the guise of the H2. Since then, customer demand has exceeded all expectations, while even the most critical motoring media has been positively rapturous about Haval.

The new Kuga has arrived in South Africa, offering one of the most technologicallyadvanced SUVs with five-star safety and improved fuel efficiency. Ford is the second-largest SUV brand in the world and every model is backed by Ford’s global SUV expertise and robust 50-year heritage in the segment. “We are thrilled with the new Kuga offering,” says Tracey Delate, General Marketing Manager, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

FERRARI unveils its new Portofino The Ferrari Portofino is the new V8 GT set to dominate its market segment, thanks to a wonderful combination of outright performance and versatility, in addition to a level of driving pleasure and on-board comfort unknown on the market. Capable of a massive 600 horsepower and sprinting from standstill to 200km/h

in a blistering 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot and generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats suitable for short trips. the NamWheels Welcome to one of NamWheels' more regular features - our list of top 5 car-related items.

top5

Do you long for more action in motorsport? Well, we might have the answer for you... With the last European round just completed in Buxtehude, Germany, the exciting FIA World Rallycross Championship now heads to South Africa for the 12th and last round of 2017. If you are not yet familiar with the sport and need to know a bit more, here are five reasons why Rallycross might tickle your fancy. We’d love to hear from y’all, so feel free to send us your feedback to: info@namwheels.com

REASONS YOU SHOULD WATCH

RALLYCROSS

POWER!!

The full-spec supercars are small and light. The total minimum weight is 1,300kg and these fire-spitting vehicles are equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged engine producing 600hp (447 kW) and 900Nm. Need to put that into perspective? That is more than

double the amount of power you get in the similarly sized new Golf R. So, what does all this power mean? Well, you’ll get from zero to 100km/h in 1.9 seconds. That is faster than any current F1 car...

They are sideways. A LOT.

Secondly, that huge amount of power has to be put down somehow. Although the RX cars wear sticky Cooper rubber, the mixed surface (gravel and tar) makes for some serious sideways action. The degree to which these cars are sideways almost

for the whole of the race was shown earlier this year in Hockenheim. A DTM (touring car) race looks fast, almost well behaved, as those cheeky little RX cars mimic a bunch of five-year olds who have just been released into a room full of trampolines.

It’s short and fast!

A Formula 1 race takes around 1,5 hours while a normal RX race is done in less than five minutes. Sometimes an RX weekend may see 70 different races in the space of just two days! Most RX tracks are only about one kilometre long

and lap times are between 40 and 60 seconds. A race weekend includes four qualification rounds with about five races each. The top 12 proceed to two semi-final rounds, the top three will move into the finals. From there on the round winner is chosen.

There’s a lot of talent.

The WRX is certainly not short of talent with new drivers making their debut every year. Here are just a few of the most well-known names: • Sebastian Loeb, 9x World Rally champion • Petter Solberg, WRC and 2x WRX champion

• Mattias Ekström, WRX and 2x DTM champion • Timo Scheider, 2x DTM champion • Ken Block, Gymkhana Hoonigan and DC shoes owner • Johan Kristoffersson, 2017 WRX champion

It has lots of action!

Due to the mixed surface of gravel and tar (and six powerful cars on the grid), some “love taps” are bound to occur. IMG World RX director, Paul Bellamy, noted at the recent Killarney track launch that light touching would not be frowned upon.

Yet this never seems to be the case, with the cars and drivers taking a significant beating. Secondly, the fast transition between surfaces can be tricky and, if the driver isn’t careful, the car may end up in the barriers!

BOOK NOW! Make sure you book tickets and get a ride or flight because...

the last round of the 2017 WRX season is held at Cape Town’s Killarney Raceway on 11 & 12 Nov 2017! If you missed it, don’t worry, the WRX will be back next year.

That said, both the third and second rows can fold down completely flat and expand the luggage space from 193 liters to 813 liters (third row folded up).

Getting a full deck of gold stars for crash test safety is vital but it was also evident that the Mitsubishi engineers focused tremendously on the off-road capability, fuel usage (8.1 liters per 100km) and The modern Sport produces Although initially getting a bit general quietness of the new maximum torque at around of criticism from some users Sport. 2,500rpm which definitely on the day, the infotainment had its benefits out there in system offers Bluetooth, USB, Introduced with two new the dunes, but we will get to Radio, as well as a reversing derivatives, the Sport now this later. camera. comes as a 2.4L D4 MIVEC

Both these modes stunned the media as it helped the sports utility vehicles move through the loose warm sand of the Atlantis dunes. A driver-selectable response system lets its pilot choose between Gravel, Mud/Snow, Sand and Rock; this definitely helped to adapt the engine, suspension and traction to the different surfaces.

“...only one vehicle had to retry an obstacle due to lack of speed (by the driver)...” The Sport also features a much more comfortable and luxurious interior with a new “flappy-paddle” gear selector system, air-con vents right across the interior; and three rows of seats.

It may lag behind in modern standards, but still does the job at hand. All-in-all, the Pajero Sport’s new interior has undergone some considerable quality refinements and I certainly Experience from other SUV's felt that it was extremely has shown that the third row comfortable and more SUVof seats might be ineffective like. for children above the age of four years yet, with the Sport, Mitsubishi has always been the third row has adequate renowned for their 5-star space for two medium-sized safety ratings, but let’s not adults. dwell on this right now.

With the turn of a knob, the driver can select two-wheel drive high range (2H) and four-wheel drive high range (4H) up to around 100km/h. Unfortunately, but rightly so, the diff-lock and low range (4HLc and 4LLc) can only be selected when the SUV is standing still. During two fun-filled hours in the dunes, Mitsubishi had faith that their machinery would tackle all the obstacles without the need of a shovel.

Their faith did not betray them... only one vehicle had to retry an obstacle due to lack of speed (by the driver). Our initial encounter with the 2017 Pajero Sport may have been rather short-lived but provided all the information we needed. Yes, the infotainment system is somewhat outdated, but other than this, we struggled to find anything worthy of criticism. The new Pajero Sport ticks all the boxes in terms of space, practicality, fuel efficiency, practicality, road comfort, price; and above all, off-road capability. The family SUV market is currently enjoying very high demand in Southern Africa and the rivalry is fierce. It is my belief that Mitsubishi might just have managed to set a new all-round bar. One that will be rough to compete with.

8 HANDIGE PADGEWOONTES OM AAN TE LEER deur Franco Theron

Sluit uit enige afleidings

Hou 'n veilige volgafstand

Kyk rond

Bly Links, steek Regs verby

Volkswagen SPRINT REVIEW

Amarok V6

Prince (not King) Proteas What you need to know: The VW Amarok was launched in 2010, mostly for a few bakkiemad countries in the southern hemisphere. After its makers and owners had to endure a couple of cringe-worthy jokes about two litre milk and juice bottles, the Amarok finally got this flagship 3.0 V6 TDi model with its recent refresh.

9L/100km from the 80L tank. V-max is apparently 193km/h while 0-100km/h should take around 8 seconds or so... our performance tests at sea level confirmed this. During these, we found a mild launch control and left the 2,820kg bakkie in automatic Sport mode, resulting in a few runs of about 8.3 seconds. Its short first gear kept grazing the 5,000rpm redline while the equally tight second ratio repeatedly met the 5,200rpm limiter; resulting in a slight loss of momentum. Changing the first few gears manually (via shift paddles) at around 4,500rpm resulted in a much better 0-100 time of 7.8 seconds.

The 2-litre TDi is still available from 103 to 132kW (BiTDi) in single or double cab form but the TSi turbo-petrol has left the bakkie party. You may also choose between a six-speed manual or eightspeed automatic gearbox, rear-wheel drive or 4Motion and four trim levels. This V6 Amarok only shipped in auto 4Motion but appears to be slightly sold out. Where we drove: Being the flavour of the moment, I had Some more facts: The 3-litre to just-about wrestle the keys engine kicks out maximum to this Amarok V6 TDi from figures of 165kW (224hp) or a my colleagues... but during mountainous 550Nm from as our short time together I took low as 1,400rpm. Volkswagen it to suburbia, a farm, a stable claims average Diesel usage of yard, some bumpy roads, an

office complex and quite a bit of open road. The solid cabin and reasonably firm ride are commendable for pick-up / leaf-sprung standards. Watch out for: Full throttle may catch you off guard! With eight gears and big torque, the engine’s power reserves seem limitless but, as I mentioned before, the gearbox can get overwhelmed by the gigantic wave of torque. Amarok’s size is also challenging – expect a length of at least 5,2m, a 1,8m height and about 1,95m width without side mirrors. Why you would want one: Duuude, that V6! What was once the reserve of Navara owners has now come to the refined Volksie bakkie – sixshooter Diesel power. And as an added bonus, this engine doesn’t sound anything like its growly 3L relatives in, say, an Audi A6. It produces husky, whistling noises like a bus or truck… which suits the butch Amarok well.
