Editor-In-Chief

Okay. Hold up. I just had to look at my calendar and verify that it has only been 3 months since the release of the

Winter issue of Gallant Magazine. Three months! So much has changed since February of 2020. Our entire world as we know it is completely and utterly different. However, rather than share the same story of the corona virus that we have all heard and felt fIrst hand, I thought I would dedicate my little corner of this issue to the things that have in veritably triumphed and stayed intact. All of us have continued to persevere in some way, and through this all our bonds with each other have often grown despite these trying times. My bonds with people have helped forge many of the biggest impacts on my life. And while virtual, Second LifeTM still allows us this amazing ability to connect with people across the grid. When I graduated law school and had to move out of state, I left my home where I was raised and the friends I had always known. It was daunting to say the least, but at the same time, I was able to pack up my computer and bring it with me to all-new places. I could log in and visit the same virtual friends that I had chatted with the day before and hang out online like nothing had changed. I can tell you there was no small comfort in that. Many people reading this helped me get through some challenging times. This has continued to be the case in the past few months. Online we have a community that does not have to wear masks, quarantine or be home at a certain hour. Here we can hang out with our friends, share our worries and our hopes as we face challenges in a way that we always have. There is a huge comfort in being able to have this special place where things have not felt the same degree of change. I am so thankful that I have people here that offer me a sense of stability in this chaotic time. This is the time to appreciate those people that can keep you grounded when all you want to do is fly away – so thanks to all of you! This issue heralds the arrival of Spring and our journey into Summer. I always love the bright, vibrant light of this issue after our months of winter. Here we feature Home & Garden creator Nodnol Jameson, owner of the awe-inspiring creations of Kraftwork. Her talents grace many of our homes and decorations across the grid. Men’s fashion designer Alexander Powell is also a cornerstone of this issue, where we have a chance to highlight the sexy and sex-positive menswear offered by his store Thirst. We also have some of the most jaw-dropping and insanely talented photographers and stylists on the grid, taking us on a journey through the seasons as we traverse this impeccable edition. Sit back (at least six feet from others), grab a nice cold beverage and enjoy this deliciously hot issue of Gallant Magazine. You’ll quickly see why we are so proud of the talent that continues to deliver you a visual masterpiece each and every issue! Cheers,

CREATIVE DIRECTOR In the current state of the world, we are all ready for something beyond our four walls

and longing for a sense of normality. Spring presents the perfect opportunity for each of us to shed the gloom of a cold, covid-laced winter and blossom into a new beginning. The past two months I’ve never been more grateful to have Second Life™ to turn to. From late night Discord calls with friends and family to the weekend parties I’ve had the pleasure of creating, hosting, and DJing – I’ve managed to create my own ways of escaping a quarantined life! With this issue our talented creatives give each of us a chance to escape, for a moment, into a seemingly normal reality. This issue covers the Spring months of April, May, and June – a time of growth, color, and new horizons. Each image in this issue tells a brand new story. From the blue hued April showers to the fresh new heat that June brings, take your mind and your body on a journey through the past, present, and future. This issue was therapeutic, it gave me an opportunity to escape my own mind and put together a brand new puzzle with pieces from people all over the grid. Thank you to our photographers, writers, bloggers, and designers for their hard work on making their ideas come to life in Second Life™, each issue is an exciting journey for me to be part of. Thank you to Scar Requiem for working tirelessly behind the scenes and to the boss man, Divos Titanium, for continuously trusting that I will interpret his vision to the fullest extent. If you take one thing from this issue curated during a worldwide pandemic, I ask that you live in the moment and watch the world around you. Tell your closest family and friends you love them, don’t hold grudges, be kind to one another and most importantly dance a little! Without further ado, enjoy the Spring 2020 issue,

I

t has been a while since I have written an article for Gallant Magazine, especially with all of the talented writers who grace these pages. However, when the decision was made to spotlight Thirst as the Men’s Fashion feature designer for the Late Spring/Early Summer issue, there was really no choice in the matter. I felt it was my duty to write and share the journey of this incredible owner and store. I have had the pleasure of knowing Alexander Powell, the talented Thirst creator, for almost a decade in Second LifeTM. From his humble beginnings to his now renown store, Alex has become a prominent force in the Second Life™ world of apparel for men. AP.PAREL, did you say? For those of you that have been supporters of his work for years, AP.PAREL was the name of Alex’s FIrst store incarnation. Initially skeptical of the world of Second LifeTM, he joined this virtual community after his FIancé, Damien Powell, introduced him to the platform. An admitted gamer, Alex was familiar with the game, but always thought it offered more of a chat room vibe rather than any other type of experience. His impressions quickly changed, and Alex soon was surprised by the vast community Second Life™ offered and how user-content-created focused the platform turned out to be. With encouragement from Damien, Alex quickly began to experiment with mesh creations. A great complement to his real-life work and experience 3D modeling, Alex was on board with the possibilities that mesh could offer. One of my FIrst memories of Alex’s mesh was him assisting the Boystown community

with one of their SET parties, and his mesh contributions helped create an amazing escape for people on the weekends. His creations as well as his sense of humor quickly made him a staple among the community. Alex eventually expanded his portfolio to male clothing. After seeing how the market catered to a majority of females, he expressed that he wanted the men of Second Life™ to have more options “because we like to look sexy too!” He opened his fIRst store AP.PAREL, although when he now looks back at his original designs he cringes. Soon after The Mesh Project body came out, he began adapting his workFLow and designing his creations with mesh bodies in mind. After a few years honing his craft, Alex decided it was time to rebrand. He chose the name Thirst for his new store, a nod to the idea that he wanted to empower a male avatar to feel it was ok to be sexy and be a thirst trap. Thirst introduced bolder, brighter and louder colors offering skimpier cuts of underwear and daring fetish wear that does not hold back from showing it all. Alex wants men to feel very comfortable being sex-positive, and he hopes Thirst can be an outlet to allow a form of self-expression to achieve that idea. Alex has grown to be a highly soughtafter designer on the grid, attending many of Second Life™’s most prominent events. He often gets excited seeing supporters comment and react when he posts teasers of his upcoming products. Alex is often inspired by real-life, queer designers who push the boundaries of menswear, such as Pump, Marco Marco, Andrew Christian and more. However, he is quick to point out that Thirst does not just cater to the gay community of Second Life™. He is proud of the fact that he many straight fans as well.

Being a content creator on Second Life™ does at times come with a cost. He shared that he at times takes on more than he probably should and deadlines can be hard to meet and a bit stressful – not to mention make it challenging to find time to hang out with family and friends. Also, the technology is constantly changing, so it requires you to have newer software to give you a visual, competitive edge on the grid. Alex shared too that it can be disheartening to work on an item for so much time and then receive a negative review from a quick-to-pounce reviewer. However, Alex was quick to follow this up by sharing sage advice for those looking to get into content creation: “Do not beat yourself up if your items do not look like top tier creators of Second LifeTM. Use it to drive yourself and push you to learn your craft. Use references but do not blatantly copy – you will FInd your own groove and style eventually.” Alex also shared his thoughts for the creators of Second Life™ as well, expressing that new designers should be welcomed and events should not be as elitist. He further shared “Creators should be encouraged and supported so their potential is not stiSFIed before it has a chance to bloom. If the only thing creators are after is a buck, he feels they will likely burn out quickly.” When looking to the future, Alex says he will continue to release more items for his supporters to enjoy. He has really loved his Jock’d underwear subscription program because these are not made for events, they are made for his fans and allow him to be creative at his own pace. These new underwear creations will continue to be released as Thirst propels into the second half of 2020.

Alex was very thankful as he spoke about his store and the Thirst journey. He was thankful to Adham DeCuir and the Boystown team, as well his late Blogger Manager, Jason Leaves. Jason’s support and hard work is memorable, and he helped shaped the success Thirst enjoys today. Alex also thanked his FIancé Damien for all he has done to bring him to Second Life™ and launch the brand. He is thankful to be able to experience this success with Damien. And lastly, Alex wanted to say a big thanks to everyone who has supported Thirst. He looks forward to the coming years and cannot wait to bring everyone new, sexy items! As a Thirst blogger from the jump, I feel I speak for us all when I say we are waiting with bated breath!

econd Life™ gives residents the ability to create the virtual world you see before you, allowing for its players to import creations to the grid. It is almost ingrained in people who join Second LifeTM to want to strive to make something of their own, and this virtual experience is saturated with creativity on so many different fronts. It all starts with the creative people behind the avatars. One such innovator, who has called Second Life™ home for more than 10 years, is Nodnol Jameson, the creator of KraftWork. Inspired by one of her favorite sync bands or early electronic music, KraftWerk, Nodnol Jameson (or Nod for short) opened KraftWork during the Fall of 2016. A store that is known for its wide array of styles and concepts for home decor furnishings, Nod describes it best, “My brand is not a ‘one style’ only brand. We prefer the freedom to make anything we want, any style we decide. I think my identity is not to have an identity at all.” A while back Nod was gifted a partially decorated sim by her partner, Allagash, and together they created a photographic sim called “West of the Rain.” This sim was designed to be a place where people could hang out and take photos. However, during the middle of the last decade, Nod’s home of Brazil was in the midst of an economic crisis. Nod found herself without a source of income. She could venture out and try to FInd something, but in truth she wanted to stay closer to her daughter. At the same time, she

still had her sim, but realized it was lacking key items they really wanted to include. Allagash suggested that since Nod is a trained architect, maybe she could take those talents and apply them to Second Life™. With this in mind, Nod took the initiative and made that idea a reality. First, she partook in modeling classes for a well-known 3D program, which ended up taking a couple of months to complete. Then, she spent an additional four months of working on items just for KraftWork. “At the beginning, we had ideas and I wasn’t able to make them, my skills were not enough. It can be frustrating and stressful, but we never gave up,” Nod said. She added that her partner, Allagash was always pushing her and keeping her head above the water, acting as the creative mind behind it all for a while until Nod felt she was comfortable enough to trust her instinct and help drive the creative front too. From that point on, KraftWork has been a titan amongst home decor brands, bringing fresh ideas and a truly unique connection to the community through Nod’s appreciation of collaboration. Nod’s team is very important to her. She referenced her daily schedule, and how she could not achieve much of it if not for her friends and family helping her along the way. A typical day for Nod starts with “coffee to survive”, reviewing her schedule, then spending 12-15 hours a day working with 3D programs, texturing, uploading, organizing her store and marketplace, checking social media and interacting with

her customers. Luckily, KraftWork has a manager, Melly Lecker, that helps Nod with the social media and behind the scenes activity. Along with a manager, KraftWork has Allagash who is Nod’s guide to everything. And then there is Doc Mercury, who is a Group Moderator for the brand. Then, there are the influencers and offIcial bloggers. Not to forget her amazing friends and frequent collaborators like Kunst and Kub, two brands that KraftWork frequently works with. It is all of these people that help support and inspire Nod to continue on and help make KraftWork what it is today. Inspiration was brought up alot during this interview with Nod. Even from the early stages of KraftWork, Nod talked about her first line of products called “Marfa”, a line of furniture that included the basics; chair, bed, tables, and frames. This idea was conceptualized by Allagash. He visited a small Texas down once called Marf, home to Donald Judd, a modernist artist that started there in the early 70’s and developed this whole super minimalist modern design district. When KraftWork FIrst opened, much of it was inspired by minimalist designs based on Donald Judd’s work. Another unique take on inspiration includes the Pop-up Personalities Project she has currently running with other extremely talented individuals. About a year ago, Nod wanted to shake things up at KraftWork. She didn’t have an “ofFIcial” blogger group yet, just a small group of people

F E AT U R E D

D E S I G N E R

F E AT U R E D

D E S I G N E R

she individually invited. They had access to her items and could basically ask for anything they needed. With that small group of people, she thought of creating a new project. They would be responsible for coming up with an entire concept for a release from KraftWork. She would sit down with them and talk about Second Life™ and concepts that might be good to see. They would touch on colors and textures; share real life experiences together, like a truly tight-knit group of creatives. This is exactly what Nod loves to see in Second Life™, the beautiful creativity that this platform can produce when you bring people together and listen to everyone and not just believe you know what is absolutely wanted or needed. If you ever wanted to talk to Nod about anything, an issue, a request, an idea, a complaint – anything feel free to send her a notecard or message in-world. Nod really enjoys talking with her customers and sharing the love amongst them all. I think that is most likely why KraftWork has worked out so nicely for Nod, her customers are loyal and are appreciative that they are listened to as well. One way that Nod achieves this really great relationship with her customers would be a bi-annual survey she releases to hear feedback and ways to improve from those who are purchasing her products. Nod noted once, when she did this survey, the top answer was to improve her skills on making textures. “So I went and learned a texture program [that taught me]

F E AT U R E D

D E S I G N E R

F E AT U R E D

D E S I G N E R

how too unwrap maps in a better way,” she said. And guess what, she no longer has issues or complaints about her textures. She took those issues and worked on it for her customers and for herself. She mentioned that her worst fear would be for people to “waste money” on her products. She strives to constantly keep improving herself to keep producing quality pieces through KraftWork. Nod also spoke about the mental aspects that come with running a business online. Nod touched on a few things, like losing track of time. She spoke about sitting for hours and forgetting to get up and move around, getting so focused on something that you do not want to stop. She said that is a definite drawback of having as much freedom as you want, you need to learn to stop and smell the roses, as it were. A positive about working from home would be that Nod is able to spend more time with her daughter. As Nod put it, “[she] is [her] daughter’s Uber™ driver. [She] can go and pick her up anytime she’s needs,” she said. “Having the freedom to be with loved ones, and not having to put something off because of work has to just… just be the bee’s knees, you know? Freedom does have it good and bad attributes, but remembering who you are, what you care about and who you love guides you though the pitfalls that freedom can have.”

“I have said this before, I am just going onwards and upwards, keep doing what I am doing and trying to bring things that make sense for buyers, thatbringthemjoy, thathelpto retain them on the grid, that offer some sort of nice roleplay mood. Not a big ambition, just keep working,” Nod said. Nod also wants to invite everyone to her “home”, which is her store, to just look around, no pressure to buy anything, just to know that she is working hard to make the coolest items she can in Second Life™. Additionally, there is a Carousel at a primo location on the KraftWork sim too. Now you do not have any reason why you should not visit KraftWork sim and explore to your hearts content.
