WELCOME

Welcome to G allatin! W

hy Gallatin? It’s a question I heard often after moving here 19 years ago. At that time, my only reason was a career change that required me to be close to Nashville. Today my answer is “why not?” Gallatin is a beautiful community where people are warm and friendly, businesses take care of customers, and families can enjoy parks, greenways, and the lake. Gallatin is a city rich in history with a downtown square that has survived the test of time and is now home to local dining and boutiques. Add to that the many community events, reasonable cost of living, and quality public education, and you have a winning combination. Our mission at the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce is to help you SEE all that Gallatin has to offer through Support, Education, and Engagement with our city and local businesses. Take time to explore our growing community. I know your visit here will greatly exceed any expectation you may have. It may have started out as a career move, but Gallatin is now home. I hope you love it here as much as I do. Respectfully, Kathryn Kisner 2017 Chairman Board of Directors Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce

KYLE CORNETT, SERVPRO

Some small-town kids can’t wait to grow up and move away. Others, like Gallatin natives Brad Singleton, 28, and Jessica Carter, 25, leave for college and can’t wait to come back. Several years ago, Kyle Cornett and his wife, Kristi, were at a crossroads in Columbia, SC. Kyle was looking for the next move in his tech-based career, and both he and Kristi wanted a milder climate for their five children. “Everyone I talked to that had come from Tennessee always said they wished they could move back,” Kristi remembers. As Kyle began talking to recruiters, Nashville cropped up as a viable next step due to the multitude of tech jobs available. “There are so many career opportunities in this area,” Kyle says, who’s been in the tech industry a little over fifteen years. Now a Senior Dot Com Developer with ServPro since December 2014, Kyle worked re-motely in SC while his kids finished up the school year in Columbia. That gave them plenty of time to prepare for their entry into Tennessee—and to decide between putting down roots in Hendersonville or Gallatin. Between internet invest-igations and Kyle’s infrequent trips to Gallatin to meet with colleagues before their move, the 8

decision became clear: Hendersonville, though lovely, was too crowded for their tastes. Gallatin fit the bill, and they made it their home in June 2015. Kristi connected with a play group in Sumner County’s Stay-AtHome-Mom Group and made the library their second home. “Not only do we have five kids under the age of eight, we also homeschool,” Kristi adds. Hanging out and studying at the library so often was a fast route to getting integrated into their new city. “We all love it here,” Kyle says. He and Kristi agree that not only are the people gracious and friendly, the wildlife is great,

they’re close to Nashville without feeling like a suburb, and the climate is the perfect mixture of north and south. Plus, the city is far more unified than anywhere else they’ve lived. Both Kristi and Kyle are originally from Florida and lived near Tampa prior to relocating to Columbia. Both areas were nice, but they never felt like they were part of a town.

staying put in Gallatin. Since beginning his career with LifePoint more than eight years ago, Williams has bounced between assignments in Brentwood and Gallatin as he climbed the ranks of the organization. However, as a born and raised Gallatin native, Williams never once considered uprooting his family and leaving the area he has loved his entire life.

For newcomers looking to integrate, Kyle and Kristi recommend finding an activity—like a church or karate classes—and just jumping in. Their family counts Bledsoe Creek Park as one of their favorite areas in the city. “Don’t be afraid to step out and meet people,” Kyle advises. Kristi agrees, adding, “We integrated very quickly that way.”

“It’s because of the deep roots we have here,” says Williams. Both he and his wife grew up in Gallatin, and now their two (soon to be three) children are able to enjoy the same small-town perks in an up-and-coming city.

RYAN WILLIAMS SUMNER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER For some families, promotions mean selling homes and changing schools. For LifePoint Chief Operating Officer Ryan Williams, promotion meant

For Williams, living close to friends and family isn’t just nice; it’s a necessity. Throughout the past year, his youngest daughter has spent more than 100 days in intensive care, requiring frequent surgeries and home health visits. Without the support and help of his family, he and his wife would have had an even more difficult time managing their daughter’s care. The experience made it clear to Williams that it was important to live close to his extended family.

Gallatin’s civic calendar is filled with family-friendly events.

His love for Gallatin has been tested and proven in other ways. Earlier in his career, Williams and his family lived near Cincinnati, Ohio, and Springfield, Tennessee, cities at opposite ends of the spectrum. Those very different experiences reinforced his decision that Gallatin is the right place for his family. “You get the small-town, tightknit community culture, but still have the amenities that other upscale cities offer,” he says, noting that he remembers a time when Gallatin wasn’t quite as upscale. “When I was in high school, the fun thing to do was socialize with friends in a parking lot or play billiards at the local pool hall,” he adds. “There were only one or two sit-down restaurants back then.” What advice does Williams have for people new to the city? “Do your homework, but just get involved,” he says, adding that attending church, volunteering in the community, joining the Rotary Club, and getting involved in the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce are good places to start. “Gallatin is a great middle-ground between Small Town, USA and the big city.” WWW.GALLATINTN.ORG

MY JOB BROUGHT US HERE

Dr. Terri Holt - Sumner Wome

n's Associates

There are still plenty of wide ope

DR. TERRI HOLT SUMNER WOMEN’S ASSOCIATES For Louisiana native Dr. Terri Holt, all it took to come to Tennessee was a wild idea. After finishing her OB/GYN residency at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, she and her husband, Kyle, thought they’d try something new. While combing through hundreds of job listings, the Nashville area stood out. And, when she found an opening with Sumner Regional Medical Center, Gallatin seemed like the perfect spot. Dr. Holt moved to Gallatin first since Kyle had to stay behind in Louisiana for six months to finish up his active duty commitment in the Air Force Reserves. Alone in a new city, Dr. Holt was forced to find her tribe, and fast. “It was hard to move across the country alone,” she remembers. But, between her colleagues at the hospital, word of mouth, and plenty of exploration on the weekends, she began to carve her own niche. The longer she stayed in Gallatin, the better it got. After her first year and a half at the hospital, Dr. Holt was able to open her own practice, even recruiting some of her long-time friends and residency colleagues from Louisiana—Dr. Brandon Montgomery and Dr. Emily Bienvenu—to come work with her. “I’ve known these people for over eight years,” she says. “It has worked out so well.”

n spaces in Gallatin.

Her colleagues from Louisiana aren’t the only ones who’ve migrated this way; her in-laws are planning to move to Gallatin soon to be closer to Dr. Holt, Kyle, and their 15-month-old son, Rhett. Five years into her surprise arrival to Gallatin, Dr. Holt has no plans to move. “We never intended to stay here forever, but now we’re an established part of the community.” There’s plenty to love about the area, too. “Gallatin is just small enough,” adds Dr. Holt. “It’s bigger than where I grew up in Louisiana, but when we need that escape, we can just hop over to Nashville.” She counts Gallatin’s historic square as one of her favorite parts of the city, with all of the cute Mom and Pop shops to pick from. But, the best part of all? “Everybody smiles and says hello.”

DR. JOHN RIPPY RIPPY FAMILY DENTISTRY Rippy Family Dentistry has been a fixture in Gallatin since 1982 when Dr. Bill Rippy first opened the doors. In 2010 the youngest son, Dr. John Rippy, followed in his father’s footsteps and graduated from The University of Tennessee dental school in Memphis. He and his wife, Teresa, then headed north to Chambersburg, PA, to be close to Teresa’s family. John worked in a federally qualified health center, where he provided dental care to underserved patients for three years before he got the call from his father.

MY JOB BROUGHT US HERE

“Dad was ready to retire,” John says, “so we moved back to Gallatin in 2013 to take over the practice. It’s been fantastic ever since.” Convincing his wife to leave her hometown took a bit of work, but after three years here, she’s a loyal fan. “She loves it and doesn’t want to move back,” he adds. Teresa appreciates that it feels like a small town, like where she grew up. People recognize each other at the ball field, and colleagues live just around the corner.

Old Hickory Lake is a major draw for newcomers to Gallatin.

John continues to serve the patients of Gallatin, many of whom remember him from when he was a kid. When he was 15, he used to walk from Gallatin High School over to his father’s office and make reminder calls for the next day’s patients. Now, he’s the one overseeing the dentist’s chair. “But, nobody calls me Dr. Rippy,” he says. “That was my father. I’m Dr. John to the patients.” After his stint in Pennsylvania, it was a joy to return to a place where he had automatic, lifelong relationships. “That’s been the best part about coming back.” §

ledsoe Creek State Park is a beautiful haven of natural space in Sumner County, and the park is always looking for ways to enrich the visitor experience. Gallatin is precisely on the path of the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. Totality of the eclipse, lasting two minutes, 38.7 seconds, will occur just before 1:30 PM local DST time that afternoon.

SITES TO SEE

GALLATIN: THE PLACE TO BE FOR

RARE SOLAR ECLIPSE

Prime viewing location on the eclipse’s narrow path across the U.S. is expected to draw thousands to Gallatin.

T

he last total eclipse to come through Sumner County was the year 1478, and the next scheduled total eclipse to pass through this area will occur in about 549 years. This makes the August 21, 2017 total eclipse truly a once in a lifetime event. The total eclipse set for August 21, 2017 will enter the U.S. in Oregon and exit North America in South Carolina. The path of the eclipse, however, is quite narrow. Many who desire to see this rare event will have to travel to the eclipse’s 70-mile wide path, which runs through northern Middle Tennessee and right through Sumner County. “We are expecting visitors from all over the world to converge in Middle Tennessee, and particularly in Sumner County," said Barry Young, Executive Director of the Sumner County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Gallatin and Castalian Springs are on the center line of the eclipse’s path, which will afford viewers the longest possible glimpse of the total eclipse. The actual viewing of the total eclipse, otherwise known as totality, will occur for a longer period of time the closer you are to the center of the path. Viewing of totality will be as little as 30 seconds on the outer edges of the path and as much as 2 minutes 40 seconds at the center of the path. The center line actually goes through Triple Creek Park in Gallatin and Bledsoe Creek State Park outside of Gallatin near Castalian Springs. Young urges viewers to educate themselves regarding eye safety during the eclipse event. “Viewers will need to wear special certified protective glasses that are safe for direct solar viewing during the partial eclipse when the moon is moving in front of the sun and then after totality when the moon is moving away from the sun,” Young said. Glasses that are certified will be marked “CE” and will protect eyes from solar radiation any time one looks at the sun or the sun’s reflection. “The only time it is safe to view the sun directly is during the total eclipse, which will last almost 2 minutes 40 seconds if you are on the center line of the eclipse’s path,” said Young. On the center line in Gallatin, the partial eclipse will begin at approximately 11:59 a.m., with the total eclipse starting at around 1:27 p.m. local time. Totality will occur when the moon moves directly in front of the sun, and the skies will darken. “You will be able to see the sun’s corona and some stars during the total eclipse, provided we have clear weather,” Young said. The entire eclipse event, including the partial eclipse as the moon moves away from the sun after totality, will be over just before 3:00 p.m. local time.

Visitors from around the globe will be visiting Gallatin to view the solar eclipse. The Sumner County Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Gallatin Chamber of Commerce, Gallatin Leisure Services and the City of Gallatin are joining together to hold the Gallatin, TN Eclipse Encounter at Triple Creek Park from 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday, August 21, 2017. The free event will include music, food, vendors, and, of course, a great place to see the eclipse unfold. As details become available, eclipse fans can find information at www. solareclipsetn.com and on the Gallatin, TN Eclipse Encounter Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ gallatineclipse. Special activities and a special eclipse viewing are also planned for Bledsoe Creek State Park outside of Gallatin near Castalian Springs on August 21, 2017. Surf AND TURF

Gallatin’s natural assets are something to boast about, and the city offers a wide range of recreation options on land, water, and even the air. If you are visiting the area for the first time, here’s what the locals might suggest you do for fun.

GET ON OLD HICKORY LAKE

With no horsepower limits and stunning landscapes, scenic Old Hickory Lake is a year-round playground. Part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ massive lock and dam system, Old Hickory Lake reservoir contains 22,500 acres of water and extends 97.3 twisting and turning miles upstream. You’ll see everything from commercial barges hauling coal and sand to roaring go-fast boats towing water-skiers and wakeboarders. Though the sheer size of the lake can seem intimidating to pilots of smaller craft, there are plenty of nooks and crannies for investigation by canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard. Begin your adventure by launching your vessel at one of the many boat ramps in the Gallatin area, including those at Bull Creek, Peach Valley, Lock 4, Cages Bend Campground, Cairo, Gallatin Marina, and Bledsoe Creek State Park.

ENJOY A BITE

Boating is notorious for working up an appetite, and you’ll find plenty of dining options on and around Old Hickory Lake. Picnic against a lake backdrop at Lock 4 Park, Cages Bend Campground, or Bledsoe Creek State Park, and work off your meal on the walking trails, bike trails, and play areas. All three sites offer tables, grills, and shelters that make the experience rustic yet comfortable. If you’d rather be served than cook up your own food over a campfire, try Awedaddy’s, located just down the road from Lock 4 Park. Watch the boats come and go at Gallatin Marina, play a game of corn hole, and listen to live music while soaking up the Key West vibe.

GO FISHING

If fishing is your idea of a contact sport, you’ll be glad to know that Gallatin has a well-deserved reputation as a sports fishing paradise. Old Hickory Lake is a magnet for thousands of recreational anglers who come in search of crappie, rockfish, large and smallmouth bass, as well as a striped freshwater sea bass that can grow to 45 pounds. A number of tournaments cater to amateur fishing enthusiasts, including the Senior Bass Anglers Old Hickory Tournament, Goodwill Industries Bass Challenge, and Reel Men of God. Professional anglers love it, too, seduced by the lake’s reputation for producing state, national, and world-record catches. Many of

the world’s top pros have tested their skills here in highly competitive tournaments like the Walmart Bass Fishing League, Women’s Bassmaster Tour, Bassmaster Elite Series, Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic, and Cabela’s King Kat Tournament.

STROLL A GREENWAY

Gallatin’s five miles of paved trails offer four seasons of refreshing outdoor fun. Bike, blade, run, or walk on wellgroomed, stroller-friendly paths next to babbling brooks, historic homes, and wildflower beds. Good options include the four-mile greenway link between the Gallatin Civic Center and Triple Creek Park as well as the Town Creek Greenway, which runs from the entrance of Triple Creek Park along Town Creek to Perolee Street in Gallatin’s Historic Woodson Terrace Neighborhood and continues along the creek to North Water Avenue on into downtown Gallatin.

RIDE A BIKE

Mountain bike enthusiasts flock to Lock 4 Park to experience the rolling BMX trails hidden in the park’s scenic woods. The 8.75-mile course is packed full of climbs, switchbacks, jumps, and berms. It’s safe enough for everyone, yet fun and challenging for even the most skilled rider. The trail is marked off into three different sections: orange, yellow, and green. Orange is a 5.7-mile loop for intermediate riders, yellow is the West Side Trail of 1.8 miles, and green is the beginner/east side trail of 2.1 miles. Special events like the Lock 4 Challenge, a Norba-sanctioned race, and the XTERRA Mountain Bike Triathlon draw competitors from across the region.

HAVE A PICNIC

There’s no shortage of places to dine in the great outdoors. Clearview Park has covered picnic facilities. Lock 4 Park, one of the most beautiful sites in Gallatin for picnicking and fishing, offers covered picnic areas with charcoal grills and paved walking trails. At Municipal Park, covered picnic areas complete with charcoal grills make it a favorite for family get-togethers. For larger gatherings, consider reserving the spacious event pavilion at Triple Creek Park.

TAKE A DIP

For decades the massive swimming pool at Municipal Park was a magnet for kids and families during hot weather. In 2017, this pool will be replaced by a new outdoor swimming facility at the Gallatin Civic Center that will feature a zerofoot entry and gradually increase in depth to about 5 feet. City leaders hope to open the new pool by Memorial Day 2017. The Civic Center’s expanded aquatics facility will be named after former Gallatin mayor and city council member Joseph “Tommy” Garrott, who spent decades advocating for the construction and later expansion of the Civic Center, which first opened in March 1994. Looking for a more luxurious experience? Foxland Harbor Golf and Country Club and the Club at Fairview Plantation both offer beautiful swimming pools for use by their members.

PLAY A SPORT

Visit Municipal Park on any spring or summer evening and you’re likely to see plenty of baseball. Little League, Kiwanis, and American Legion baseball leagues all play games on Municipal Park diamonds. The park also offers softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and basketball courts. Clearview Park offers outstanding summer youth programs, and Triple Creek Park boasts soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, two full-length football fields, a ten-hole disk golf range, and walking trails. In addition to providing a home base for Gallatin Soccer Club and Gallatin Youth Football League, the park hosts many disc golf tournaments throughout the year.

With so many miles of shoreline on Old Hickory Lake, it’s no surprise that two local favorites are close to the water. At one end of the spectrum is Awedaddy’s Bar & Grill at Gallatin Marina, a rip-roaring Key West kind of bar where the only thing better than the drinks is the delicious Key Lime pie. At the other end of the spectrum, just a few miles away as the crow flies, is Foxland Southern Grill. Part of the Foxland Harbor Golf and Country Club, this elegant restaurant serves southern inspired dishes using only the finest local ingredients against a backdrop of stunning courtyard and lake views.

FOXLAND SOUTHERN GRILL’S CHEF JULIO BREAKS NEW GROUND Foxland Southern Grill Executive Chef Julio C. Hernandez is putting Gallatin on the culinary map, one delicious bite at a time. A native of New York City, Chef Hernandez found his way to Foxland Southern Grill by way of Mexico, Argentina and Colombia. Though he started cooking at 14 and studied at the Culinary Arts Institute in Nashville for a short time, his real education happened in the legendary professional kitchens of New York City. He worked in Hell’s Kitchen on Restaurant Row on Fifth Avenue as well as restaurants in the Meatpacking District in Lower Manhattan. “I learned from some of the best, including the restauranteur Joe Bastianich,” says Chef Hernandez, noting that the Italian cooking style he learned during this period would play a major role in the evolution of his unique culinary style. When he moved to Nashville at the age of 21, infant son in tow, it didn’t take long for him to realize that he didn’t know a thing about good old fashioned southern food. “I was asked to make meatloaf and I didn’t know how,” he says of his first experiences cooking in Nashville. “It was the same with squash casserole. I didn’t have a clue.” So he set about learning the art of southern cooking, working with notable chefs to build his skills. Today, his creations are an intoxicating blend of American, Italian and Latin American influences that have won him a loyal fan base at Foxland Southern Grill and beyond. “Not long ago, we did a few cooking demonstrations at the Nashville Farmers’ Market and a lot of people were impressed,” he notes. “Several people who

We’re doing our part to get Gallatin’s name out there.” To Chef Hernandez, the way food is prepared is as important as the end result. “I run a ‘from scratch’ kitchen,” he emphasizes. “We are artisans who believe in a hands-on approach. Absolutely everything—from pastas to breads to sauces—is made in house. It’s just better that way.” §

Like many children born into family businesses, Eddie got an early start in the store. “As a child, I swept floors and cleaned and then helped with deliveries when I got a little older,” remembers Eddie, who joined the business full time after graduating from Middle Tennessee State University 28 years ago. Today, Eddie sees a bright future for his business and the community that has supported it for nearly three decades. “We’ve been here a long time and historically, most of our customers have come from a 20-mile radius of Gallatin,” says Eddie. “But these days, more and more of our customers are people who have moved here from somewhere else. It’s actually about a 50/50 split.” For Eddie, the influx of new faces is a good thing and he offers this advice for newcomers: “Shop local,” he advises. “Smaller businesses are often one step ahead of the trends. You can get more up-to-date products from smaller businesses, plus you’ll definitely get better service.”

CORLEW APPLIANCE & REPAIR

When appliances break (and they all eventually do), who do you call? If you’re like many people in the Gallatin area, you call Keir Corlew. For Keir, appliance repair is the family business with a history that stretches back to the 1940s when his grandfather opened a TV sales and repair storefront on Ellington Place in Nashville. “Dad worked in Grandpa’s business for a while before starting his own TV repair business in the 1960s and then transitioning to appliance repair in the late 1970s,”

The original old ho use in the developm ent now known as Kennesaw Farms

remembers Keir. “By 1982, I was helping my dad on the side and by the time I hit my early 30s, I realized that I could do this on my own.” Since making the decision to strike out on his own in 1997, Keir has developed a loyal and dedicated following. Though his specialty is refrigeration and ice machines, he works on washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, garbage disposals, ovens, dishwashers, and more, located in homes, houseboats, yachts, and recreational vehicles. “If there’s an appliance you can think of, I can probably fix it,” says Keir, who counts several household name country artists

among his clientele. “I’ve never been known to shy away from a tough project, even appliances manufactured outside the U.S., or those that run on alternative power sources like propane.” Though the storefront on Water Street once run by his father is now managed by other relatives, Keir carries on the family tradition of bringing problem appliances back to life. What does Keir enjoy most about his work? Making people happy tops the list. “Getting the job done right is the most important thing,” he adds. “When everyone’s happy, that’s the best feeling. I love it when people have confidence in me.”

Step into this unassuming building tucked away at 224 North Locust Avenue and enter a world of possibilities. Everything you need to create a completely customized home is available here. Owned by Ashlee Nash, a Gallatin native and Middle Tennessee State University-degreed interior designer who purchased the business in 2015, Binkley Nash continues a Gallatin tradition that began in 1968 when Billy Binkley opened Binkley Furniture House. (If you’ve lived in Gallatin for a while, you may remember Billy, his son, Mike, and his wife, Lenora, working in this thriving business.) In addition to high-end lines like Hooker Furniture, King Hickory, Fairfield, and Bradington Young, Binkley Nash offers interior design consultations, floor plan development, and guidance selecting interior elements like paint color, granite and lighting. “My clients want a high-end custom look,” says Nash. “Because my business is small without lots of overhead, I can offer products at a much more reasonable price. People are really happy to discover that they don’t have to drive into Nashville to get what they need.” Personal service has been a Binkley trademark since the beginning, and Nash kicks things up a notch. Enter her store and you’re likely to be greeted by Anna Jayne, Nash’s adorable toddler daughter. “She loves being here with me and my customers enjoy her,” says Nash as she balances Anna Jayne on her lap. As Gallatin has grown, Nash has found her customer base shifting. “Before I bought the business, most buyers were from Gallatin,” she says. “Now, it’s split pretty evenly between local customers and people from out of town. Buyers come from as far away as Williamson County and southern Kentucky because I carry brands that most furniture stores don’t.” Though Nash is passionate about her work as an interior designer, it’s the relationships with her customers that she finds most satisfying. “I consider myself very blessed to be able to do what I love,” she says. “People come here as customers but they leave as friends.”

When Anchor High Restaurant (now "The Rudder") in Hendersonville was ready for renovation, Wallace got the call to rebuild the 5,000 sq. ft. building floating just off the shore of Old Hickory Lake. For Wallace, more exciting projects are in the works, including a renovation on a home in Lebanon that Paul and Linda McCartney lived in during the 1970s. Wallace loves his community. “Gallatin is a great city, one that has been very good to me,” he says. “I try to stay actively involved in charitable organizations around town, like the annual Rotary Christmas Auction, and contribute to Habitat for Humanity of Sumner County. It’s important to me to give back to the community that has always supported me."

A household name among Gallatin natives, Randy Jones Construction has been in business for more than 40 years. After graduating from Gallatin High School and attending college, Randy spent a few years in retail and at his father’s cabinet business before launching the firm that bears his name in 1976. After a downturn in construction activity due to soaring interest rates in the late 1970s, activity started to pick up. Randy’s brother, Ron, joined the firm in 1985 after earning degrees in business and finance from Middle Tennessee State University. Today, the brothers are benefitting from the overflow from Nashville’s housing boom combined with a rebounding real estate market and interest rates at a 40-year low. “At any one time, we usually have 20 – 25 homes in various stages of construction,” notes Ron, adding that they’ve observed a shift in the types of homes buyers are requesting. “In the last few years, 100 percent of our work has been custom projects, mostly for young professionals and for older adults who are downsizing out of larger homes. We’re not building the 4 – 5 bedroom twostory homes anymore. Most of our projects are in the 1,500 – 1,800 sq. ft. range with bonus rooms or screened in porches.” As builders who limit their work to residential construction in Gallatin, the brothers have a fondness for the city. “We use local subcontractors and

106 PUBLIC SQUARE – HOME TO INNOVATION Late in 2016, one of the most eagerly anticipated commercial spaces in Gallatin opened for business. Originally known as the Suddarth Building, the 10,500 sq.- ft. structure at 106 Public Square has been lovingly revitalized and is now home to a growing number of entrepreneurs, creatives, and small business owners. Clay Haynes, a Managing Partner at Oak Tree Partners and the brainchild behind the renovation, hopes this will be a milestone project for downtown Gallatin. After buying the building at public auction in 2015 with no idea what he would do with it, a vision for the space gradually came into focus. He imagined creating a Class A office space that would house members of Gallatin’s entrepreneurial class. “I wanted to demonstrate a proof of concept that you can take a historical building and fully revitalize it in a way that makes economic sense,” says Haynes. “I also wanted to preserve the building for another century in a way that meets the needs of the next generation economy.”

No detail has been overlooked during the design process, with fixtures and finishes chosen to complement the structure’s beautiful original elements including skylights, oak floors, chestnut support beams, and tin ceilings. “The architecturally perfect light fixtures came from Portland, Oregon, and the energy efficient ceiling fans came from a company in Lexington, Kentucky,” notes Haynes. “The dry wall removes volatile organic compounds from the air, and we’ve put a lot of thought into sound transmission so that each office is private but flooded with natural light as much as possible.” The exterior façade has not changed, yet the building’s state-of-the art amenities, such as ultra-high-speed internet access, a community café, reading areas, key fob access, LED lighting, and a small fitness center, have been a magnet for small business owners. “Creating an energy efficient space is the right thing to do,” adds Haynes. “It’s one important way to honor the building’s 100-year history.” Haynes finds himself drawn to Middle Tennessee’s historic suburban towns, seeing a mixture of magic and potential in their historic downtown squares. “I can’t tell you how many people who’ve talked to me about the 106 Public Square project have some sort of connection to that building,” says Haynes, “including descendants of the Suddarth family, people who worked in the businesses housed there over the years, or people like me who waited for the school bus in front of that building. I’ve realized that what attracted me to the square is what attracts so many others: a deep sense of place.” 34 |

HILTON GARDEN INN TO ANCHOR BAKER CROSSING DEVELOPMENT A Hilton Garden Inn, convention space and a retail center are in the works for Gallatin, thanks to the passion a local businessman has for his community.

The Antiques on Main Building is set for renovation

Based on leasing activity at 106 Public Square, Haynes has a hit on his hands. “We have built a user-friendly office space that intentionally lowers the barriers to entry for individuals who want to take the next step in growing their small businesses,” says Haynes. “But what excites me the most is how the local business owners are responding to the vision for this space. While I take a lot of pride in the structure’s physical characteristics, the greatest power in this office is generated by the community that’s taking root. I’m thrilled with the diversity of businesses that are calling 106 Public Square their home.”

In 2015, when Gallatin business owner Hemel Surati bought an 8.15-acre parcel of land along Tulip Poplar Drive between Nashville Pike and North Belvedere Drive, he envisioned a large retail plaza on the property that would house, among other things, one of his two liquor stores. But once he shared his plans with relatives in Pennsylvania, the project snowballed. “We could all see that the time was right for Gallatin to have a full-service hotel and convention space,” remembers Surati. The family evaluated a number of hotel operators for the project, finally settling on Hilton Garden Inn. In September, the Gallatin Planning Commission signed off on a final master development plan for the first phase of the new development that will be known as Bakers Crossing. Plans include a four-story Hilton Garden Inn hotel with 99 rooms, a

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ANTIQUES ON MAIN?

In addition to 106 Public Square, Oak Tree Properties is the driving force behind the upcoming renovation of the Antiques on Main building on Gallatin’s historic square. Haynes says that the project is still in the early design phase. “We’re looking at a lot of different options,” says Haynes. “Our goal is to make the building accessible while keeping as much of the historic texture as possible, including the structure’s beautiful barrel vault ceiling that was recently exposed.” While Haynes isn’t able to confirm speculation that one or more nationallyknown restaurant concepts may end up in the space, he confirms that his company is thinking big. “Our goal is to take this very large building and divide it up responsibly in a way that will make it easier for people to bring new businesses to our downtown square,” he adds. “Our firm is very focused on adaptive reuse and historic revitalization. It has become our niche.”

Additional phases of the development would include a second 99-room hotel; 32,600 square feet of retail space; 7,500 square feet of office space; and 6,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space on the property. Surati sees the hotel and convention center complex as something completely new for Gallatin. “It’s designed for businesses and organizations that want to host large-scale conventions where people can meet, eat, shop, and stay all in the same place,” he says. Ultimately, Surati sees this as a city center project. “It will be a destination venue, one that will draw people from all around.” Though Surati won’t divulge the retail roster planned for the complex, he admits that the prospects are very good. Surati also plans to relocate Liquor World from its current location on North Belvedere Drive to the new retail plaza. What compelled Surati to choose Gallatin for this high profile project? “I have a soft spot for the city,” he says. “We already own two liquor stores here. I’m on the Gallatin Chamber board. What’s new on the economic and community development front? Plenty—and things show no signs of slowing.

BRISK GROWTH CONTINUES

As a result of industrial growth Gallatin has experienced in the last five years, the city is seeing action in support areas with retail, hotel, and conference center projects all in the works. Meanwhile, the industrial expansions keep coming. Gap Inc., the San Francisco-based retail giant, announced a $3.1 million plan to expand the company’s Gallatin distribution hub, a move that has taken employment from 600 jobs to nearly 1,300 jobs in less than a year. ServPro Industries, Inc., the national cleaning and restoration company headquartered in Gallatin, is investing $730,000 in an expansion that will create more than 200 new jobs in Sumner County. The Bradford Company, a reusable packaging manufacturer, is investing $5.1 million over the next five years to expand operations at its Gallatin facility, adding 25 new jobs. Western Reflections, a manufacturer and distributor of decorative and clear insulated glass doorlites, broke ground on a 50,000 sq. ft. addition that will increase jobs there by 15%. Hiring at all companies continues at a brisk pace and WorkInGallatin.com, the Gallatin Economic Development Agency’s one-stop portal for employment opportunities at Gallatin employers, sees thousands of hits each month.

SPECIAL CENSUS CONFIRMS GALLATIN’S GROWTH

In 2016, city leaders’ suspicions that Gallatin’s population

had substantially increased since 2010 were confirmed by a Special Census that measured growth from 2010 to 2015. The 15% population growth revealed by the Special Census means that the city will receive an estimated $500,000 boost in tax revenue for the general fund budget beginning in the 2016-17 fiscal year.

SUMNER COUNTY REGIONAL AIRPORT SEES IMPROVEMENTS

Major infrastructure improvements at the Sumner County Airport have also positioned the city for future growth. A $6.1 million project to reconstruct the airport’s 6,300 ft. runway, move the parallel taxiway in order to comply with current FAA safety guidelines, and install LED airfield lighting and precision approach path lighting was completed in 2015. The scope of the work is the largest to occur at the airport since it was built in 1962. The airport now has a new manager and offers upgraded services, including a restaurant.

AIRPORT ROAD TO BE MOVED, WIDENED

A 1.5-mile portion of Airport Road north of Cairo Road and east of Steam Plant Road will be relocated up to 81 feet west of its current location, according to Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) reports. The road will also be widened from two lanes to three lanes, which will include two travel

INDUSTRIAL CENTER ROAD EXTENSION PLANNED

A planned road extension is expected to spur further development at the Gallatin Industrial Center. The TDOT road project, estimated to cost more than $600,000, will extend Gateway Drive 1,060 feet east from the new Beretta U.S.A. facility, and a new 1,750-foot road will be built connecting Commerce Way to Gateway Drive.

The project includes a new bridge over the railroad tracks between Blythe Avenue and North Water, a new four-way intersection at Ensure Gallatin’s prosperity by serving as its Blythe Avenue, and a new road extending from this new catalyst for progressive and diverse economic four-way intersection over to development through community growth. SR 109.

In June 2016, the Gallatin Economic Development Agency Board identified five goals for short-term pursuit:

Nashville’s status as the latest “it” city has created a vibrant regional economy that benefits communities like Gallatin. Faced with a tightening labor market in the manufacturing sector, city and county leaders throughout the region have been working together to develop strategies to diversify the employment base. As a result, the Gallatin Economic Development Agency’s mission, objective, and initiatives have been adjusted to reflect the change in focus.

1. Franchise headquarters 2. Aviation or related business/industry 3. Start-up companies 4. Manufacturing with more white collar, front office jobs on site 5. Tech companies, primarily data centers

The long-awaited State Route 109 project between the by-pass and the Cumberland River bridge is moving ahead (See separate article). OVATION MUSIC AND STUDIOS

Though Ovation Music and Studios specializes in music lessons, recordings, and instrument retail and repair, the founders say that at its soul, it’s a mom and pop place trying to spread the music love in a world of corporate shenanigans. The aptly named Samantha DeTone is one of the many nonnatives who came to Tennessee expecting a short stay. While attending The Blackbird Academy for studio engineering, Samantha fell in love with the easy-smile culture of the area. Her parents owned an Ovation Music and Studios store in Florida, and when it became apparent Samantha wanted to remain in Tennessee, the family decided to open a second location in Gallatin. In fact, the Gallatin operation has been so successful that her parents sold their business in Florida and have relocated to Gallatin themselves. Ovation is prospering under its family-centered leadership. Living and working together are Samantha, her boyfriend Randy, and Neve, their popular puppy. The family works with all ages and skill levels—from 5 to 75 and from novices to experts. In addition to music instruction, they set-up mentor programs, assemble bands for their students, and book gigs in local establishments. They have also added a “Mommy and

MOORE LIFE URGENT CARE

As the founder of Moore Life Urgent Care, Dr. Wayne Moore provides urgent care services that work cooperatively with existing medical resources in Gallatin. In addition to offering services during regular daytime hours, he also provides off-hour assistance when a patient’s regular physician is not available. Hailing from a family of eight doctors, Dr. Moore is driven to better the health care of all Americans through the avenue of emergency medicine. As the former Director of EMS for Washington D.C., Dr. Moore protected everyone—from the homeless to the President of the United States. Eventually, an offer to become the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry brought Dr. Moore to Nashville. Additionally, his aspiration has been to create a legacy for his daughters Kamilah and Kimiko Moore, both future physicians.

To Dr. Moore, a welcoming community and a beautiful lake make Gallatin the perfect location to set up his practice. Since launching his urgent care practice, Dr. Moore has added more services. He and his wife now provide medical weight loss assistance, flu shot administration, sport physicals, cosmetic services, and services for employers such as workplace injury response and pre-employment screenings. “Our ultimate goal is to provide quality service to the citizens of Gallatin and surrounding communities,” says Dr. Moore. “Our building houses more than just an urgent care center; we lease office space and ultimately plan to have multiple practices under one roof to respond to trends in retail medicine.”

Hundreds of pieces are stored in their warehouses and many more are available for viewing online. Worthington Galleries’ service menu also includes private sales and consulting, art authentication, restoration, auctions, art consulting, lessons, and classes. “We wanted to open a multi-purpose gallery, one where people could come in and appreciate art like they would in a museum, but also one where

GO BIG LOGOS

Go Big Logos makes signs—awesome signs. American-made and officially licensed, Go Big Logos uses precision manufacturing technology to create wall art for college teams in the Power 5 Conferences. The University of Tennessee was one of the first schools to approve Go Big Logos’ designs, so the firm’s parent company, NIC Global, moved their manufacturing process to Gallatin. NIC Global has an established reputation in Gallatin with over ten years of operation. For Vice President Troy Wood, Gallatin is as good as it gets. “The Gallatin Chamber of Commerce and the city’s economic development team have been great supporters of our growth,” says Wood. “We have a proven team here and know that they will produce high quality product.” Market reception to Go Big Logos’ product has been so positive that the company plans to expand their logo production to professional teams in the future. For now, their focus remains on the college football market and the pivotal role they play in helping loyal fans express their inner fanatic. “It all starts with our employees,” continues Wood. “Our team is the best in the industry and Go Big Logos wall signs are a great reflection of their creativity and commitment.” §

NATIONAL CHAINS with

Local Owners

A number of nationally known franchises make their home in Gallatin. Meet a few of the locals running the show behind the scenes.

BATTERIES PLUS BULBS – DAVID & KATHIE JUNKER

Before launching their business, Batteries Plus Bulbs owners David and Kathie Junker didn't think much about batteries. But when David's company moved overseas, he decided it was time to launch a business of his own. After much consideration and pulling from his experience as a Maintenance Coordinator and Environmental Health & Safety Manager, David chose a Batteries Plus franchise to begin a new chapter in life. His interest and experience in all things mechanical, electrical, and electronic helped in his choice. Kathie, a freelance photographer, saw this as her opportunity to be his partner not only in marriage, but also in business. Batteries Plus took off, eventually expanding to carry a wide variety of bulbs and offer device repair. The firm carries every type of bulb and battery imaginable. “Customer service is our strong point,” Kathie says. "We treat everyone that walks in like they're family. Customers don't always know what they need, so we help them figure it out. Our sales associates and technicians are well trained and eager to help.”

Greg Garretson & his team

at Chick-fil-A in Gallatin

After 30 years living in Macon County, Kathie and David made the move to Gallatin in April to be closer to their business and family. In October, they'll celebrate nine years in business.

CHICK-FIL-A—GREG GARRETSON

After selling a business in 1999, Greg Garretson— franchise operator of Chick-fil-A—wanted to find a great town so he could open a great business. He took a hard look at the Nashville metropolitan area to see which location might have the best chance at supporting a new endeavor. Gallatin seemed like the best spot for many reasons, especially the appeal of raising his children in such a wonderful community. He considered several different franchise companies, each with their own set of pros and cons. "But nothing stood out like a Chickfil-A franchise,” he says. “The Cathy family, who own Chick-fil-A, are wonderful partners." Chick-fil-A’s corporate values and their business model made it a no brainer for Greg. Chick-fil-A is known for great customer service and delicious chicken, but they also encourage community involvement among their franchisees, an emphasis that Greg didn’t find in other franchise opportunities he considered. Chickfil-A supports a number of groups and organizations in the area, and he adds, “We try to help and treat everyone with honor, dignity, and respect.” 50 |

Morningside, and Stephanie says, “It adds another layer to our care of seniors when pets can be a part of it.”

BUFFALO WILD WINGS – JULIE LAMB

For Julie Lamb, community, hospitality, and career converge in one spot: Buffalo Wild Wings, known to regulars as BW3. Julie is a food service industry veteran, having worked as district manager for both McAlister’s Deli and Beefy’s. Around eight years ago, after she caught wind that Buffalo Wild Wings was planning a new location in Gallatin, and she applied for the job—just before BW3’s groundbreaking ceremony—which eventually led to her current role as Community and Guest Liaison.

Stephanie Harville - Morningside of Gallatin

MORNINGSIDE OF GALLATIN – STEPHANIE HARVILLE

Gallatin native Stephanie Harville has lived all over Tennessee, thanks to her career in nursing home administration. After working in Chattanooga, Tullahoma, Lynchburg, and Hermitage, she reached a point in her career where she wanted less stress and more time to raise her family. Morningside of Gallatin, a 40-unit assisted living facility in Gallatin specializing in residential services for seniors, was looking for an executive director. Stephanie seized the opportunity to move home and hasn’t looked back. Coming home to Gallatin fit in more ways than she expected. The town welcomed her family back, and she counts the people of Gallatin—and Morningside—as big factors in her success. “I always thought of Morningside as a reputable provider of senior services,” she says. But after joining the team, it became obvious very quickly that Morningside had a special group of unusually dedicated, high-caliber employees, shining brighter than any other place she’d ever worked. And the proof is in the numbers—the average turnover in the health care industry is 100%. Last year at Morningside, it was only 18%. Offering superb residential services for seniors and boasting an award-winning staff aren’t Morningside’s only claims to fame. The facility is also pet-friendly, which allows Stephanie to combine two of her greatest passions: helping seniors— and pets. Bunnies, dogs, and cats count among the critters at

Throughout the years, Julie has discovered that there’s way more to BW3 than just wings and burgers. When asked about her favorite part of the job, Julie says, “Being able to give back to the community.” As a corporation, Buffalo Wild Wings is very philanthropic. The Gallatin location supports schools, local baseball and football teams, and holds a variety of fundraisers. “We do this for people who need it,” she says, pointing out that sometimes people get in car accidents or motorcycle accidents and need assistance. “People come to us and ask for help. We’ve never turned someone down.”

GATEWAY TIRE – BRAD CUNNINGHAM

Cars are in Brad Cunningham’s blood. He has been in the automotive field for 22 years and he comes from a long line of car guys—even his grandfather has owned several car dealerships in the Middle Tennessee area. About two years ago, Brad held a position with Car Quest in Mt Juliet and caught wind that Gateway Tire had started the hunt for a capable store manager. Brad’s name was recommended by some friends immediately. It wasn’t long after that he snagged the job and made the move to Gallatin—eventually settling into Elk Acres, the neighborhood right around the corner from the store. Gateway Tire is known primarily for full-service repairs and tires, but Brad aims to expand that reputation. “Most people think we’re just a tire store, but really there’s a lot we do that people don’t realize,” he says. Their store also works with lawn/garden equipment, ATV’s, even tractors. “If it rolls and it’s round, we can help you!” And after living in Gallatin for almost six years, he says that the best part of doing business here is the blend of good people, repeat business, and competition. Close enough to Nashville but still far enough away to maintain that country feel, Gallatin is a perfect blend of booming business and community. (continued)

VOL STATE LAUNCHES

CYBER DEFENSE DEGREE PROGRAM

T

he computer hacking of major corporations, government offices, and banks is a growing threat. Fortunately, there is a solution: cyber defense. Volunteer State Community College is responding to the growing demand for these skills with a cyber defense degree program, part of a rapidly growing realm of information technology education being offered at the college. The reason for the expansion comes down to employment prospects. Companies are desperately looking for qualified applicants. Cisco estimates there are one million open cyber-related positions worldwide.

New programs at Vol State respond to a growing need for cyber defense expertise.

opening of the Students celebrate the k Humanities Building Steinhauer-Rogan-Blac

“Vol State prides its self on being responsive to the workforce needs of our community,” says President Jerry Faulkner. “Every evening newscast and daily paper demonstrates that there is a demand for qualified technicians in the cyber defense field.” A Georgetown University study estimated that approximately 7,000 computer and mathematical science jobs in Tennessee will require at least an associate degree by 2018. Tech job openings in Middle Tennessee have climbed from 872 in 2014, to 1,548 in 2015, according to a Nashville Technology Council report. The Brookings Institution now ranks Nashville as the top metro area in the United States for tech employment growth in a 2016 report. “Vol State prides its self on being responsive to the workforce needs of our community,” says President Jerry Faulkner. “Every evening newscast and daily paper demonstrates that there is a demand for qualified technicians in the cyber defense field.” IT jobs have been in demand for some time. But increasing cyber security issues make cyber defense a lucrative career for people with the proper training. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Cyber Defense Analysts in Tennessee can make from $50,000 a year to $67,000 a year with a degree and $100,000 or more with a degree and certifications. The national median salary for Information Security Analysts is $90,120. Vol State offers a comprehensive program that combines the foundation of the Computer Information Technology (CIT) degree program with specific cyber defense courses. It gives the student the preparation they need to enter the workplace or expand their learning. The program is proving popular. Dozens of students signed up for the cyber defense degree concentration before it was even publicized. For more information, visit http://www.volstate. edu/CyberDefense. §

WORLD-CLASS HEALTHCARE:

Just around the Corner

Gallatin is fortun ate to have world -class healthcare within the city limits.

Sumner County’s largest hospital, Sumner Regional Medical Center (SRMC), is proud to have expanded over the last year to offer even more advanced and convenient health care services to residents of Gallatin and its neighboring communities.

T

o accommodate the rapid growth in the area, one of the highest priorities for SRMC’s leadership team has been to expand and enhance the level of emergency care provided both by the hospital’s main campus and at Sumner Station, the hospital’s health and wellness campus located on Big Station Camp Boulevard off of Vietnam Veterans’ Parkway. As part of this effort, the hospital requested and received a Certificate of Need to build a freestanding Emergency Room at Sumner Station, slated to open in early 2017, which will provide 24-hour access to life-saving care for large portions of the Gallatin community. The new ER will alleviate travel times for patients who need immediate care, which will be provided by the same board-certified and emergency medicine-trained physicians that treat patients at SRMC. The hospital also received funding from LifePoint Health, SRMC’s parent company, to build a second cardiac catheterization lab at the hospital’s main campus, increasing the emergency

medicine team’s capacity to provide interventional cardiac care. SRMC is proud to provide the fastest cardiac intervention times in the region, and a new cardiac cath lab will enable the hospital to maintain the quickest possible response times for a greater number of heart attack patients. Another opportunity to improve and expand emergency care was earned in 2016 when the hospital was awarded Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers, following a rigorous onsite review by experts with the American Heart and American Stroke Associations and The Joint Commission. Certified primary stroke centers consistently set a higher standard of care for stroke patients in their communities. And with the hospital’s teleneurology affiliation with Vanderbilt University Medical Center and an expanding neurosurgery program at SRMC, the hospital continues to focus on delivering high quality care to all patients affected by stroke, right here at home.

HEALTHCARE

Providing high quality care is the most important priority for the staff and SRMC, so they were proud to be named a Top Performing Hospital in Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission again in 2016. Furthermore, SRMC is proud to have been awarded the highest possible safety rating from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that evaluates and reports on the quality and safety of American health care.

SRMC is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is governed by a local board of trustees. The hospital is also one of the largest non-government employers in Sumner County. For more information about SRMC or to find a physician, visit www.MySumnerMedical.com or call (615) 328-8888. ยง

KROGER MARKETPLACE

Kroger Marketplace added a clothing department to their one-stop marketplace last year. From national name brands to their own private label, Kroger has the fashion of the whole family in mind. To ensure customer satisfaction, they’ve outfitted their apparel department with fitting rooms and welltrained personnel. Each apparel associate is trained to provide meaningful feedback to customers in order to make reasonably priced items look like they’ve come from an expensive boutique. Kroger got into the apparel business in their Marketplace stores after listening to feedback from customers who said they preferred apparel offerings over the furniture that had previously been available in Marketplace stores.

THE RED TULIP

The Red Tulip is in the business of gifts. Whether you’re looking for baby gifts, birthday gifts, customized gifts, or a just-because gift, The Red Tulip makes it easy to provide the perfect token of love or thanks. Launched by Gallatin native Rachel Mullins and her mother-in-law Margaret Mullins, The Red Tulip was born out of necessity. “We used to have to drive 45 minutes into Nashville just to buy wedding invitations,” remembers Rachel. “At the time, eleven years ago, there were no options in Gallatin—so we decided to fix the problem. We never thought we’d be open eleven years later, but here we are.” The

population explosion in the Gallatin area generates a constant stream of new customers. “I meet three to five new people a day,” she adds. Caring for customers old and new is a passion for the owners. “I’ve been called back to the shop after I’ve left for the day for many a gift emergency,” says Rachel, “but those are the sort of services I'm happy to provide. We love it that our customers often become our friends.”

SOUTHERN GYPSIES BOUTIQUE

No matter your shape, size, or style preference Southern Gypsies Boutique has clothing for you; and if it doesn’t, Gypsies’ “father store” will. Owner Kayla West hatched her boutique from her obsession with clothing; however, she soon realized she was only serving half of Gallatin’s populace. So she asked her “outdoorsy” father to open a shop dedicated to men in the back half of her store—thus Red Fox Outfitters was born. Now the combination store truly accommodates all genders and styles. “We are here to cater to our customers,” says Kayla. “We want to help everyone, and provide clothes in all shapes and sizes. Essentially, we just want customers to come in, and leave happy with an amazing outfit that they absolutely love.” Red Fox Outfitters has also added a new hunting line designed to make it easier for customers to enjoy the great outdoors.

STELLA’S BOUTIQUE

Stella’s Boutique is quirky by design. This faith-based boutique offers a hodgepodge of fashionable items and acts as a revolving door for whatever is new or fresh. Offering a mixture of new clothing lines and consignment items, the only constant at Stella’s is that its line-up can’t be found anywhere else. Owner Paula Rainey, a Gallatin resident for more than four decades, launched Stella’s (named in honor of her beautiful and eclectic mother) when there were only a handful of other fashion retailers in the Gallatin area. Now, three and a half years later, Paula is excited about the explosion of fashion opportunities. “Gallatin has been on a crazy growth spurt,” says Paula. “The city has turned into a true shopping destination, drawing people who wouldn’t come if there were only one or two shops to choose from. And that’s a good thing.”

TENNESSEE HONEY BOUTIQUE & GIFTS

Southern charm with a bite of whiskey and a rustic soul: so says the tagline of Tennessee Honey Boutique & Gifts, and so follows the style of its clothing. With a range of clothing lines that include boho chic, modern prep, and southern edge, with mostly handcrafted accessories—Tennessee Honey is a boutique for the everyday woman. The life trajectory of owner, Brittney Yates, has always built towards owning a charming boutique in a vibrant, up-and-coming southern town. From her fashion merchandising and design degree to her occupation as a corporate buyer in Nashville, Brittney’s whole career has been about fashion. And the results have been fantastic. “The Gallatin community has been great,” says Brittney. “We didn’t know what to expect with

It’s easy to find the lat est styles in Gallatin’s many boutiqu es our first business venture, but the response has been crazy! Gallatin is such a community driven place, where people are so amped about shopping local and small.”

VELVET ANTLER BOUTIQUE & GIFTS

One of the newer shopping destinations in Gallatin is Velvet Antler Boutique & Gifts. Though this budding boutique is barely a year old, it’s geared toward providing a unique experience to all patrons. “We aren’t just a clothing store; we try to have a little bit of everything,” says owner Deanna Martin. “We offer a variety of products, from skincare to monogramming and beyond.” Before opening their doors in late 2015, Deanna and her husband spent nine months renovating the store, completing nearly all of the work themselves. She knew that starting a business on Gallatin’s historic square would be a wise investment, especially after having seen her Mississippi hometown boom in a similar fashion. So far, her instincts have been proven correct. “It helps that downtown Gallatin is flourishing and the community is coming together,” she adds. “People are turning away from the malls towards stores that provide them a unique experience. When customers leave our store, we want them to feel like their business was appreciated.”

GALLATIN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

GALLATIN, TENNESSEE

TRUE GRIT. AMAZING GRACE.

J

ohnny Cash once said “Be yourself and there are few limitations in life.” Turns out that’s the philosophy of a lot of iconic people and places. Spend some time in Gallatin, Tennessee, and you’ll discover what we’re talking about. Located about 20 miles northeast of Nashville, Gallatin is that rare town that’s perfectly comfortable with its own place in the world. Sure, the folks in Gallatin love being able to spend time in a very large, very cool city like Nashville whenever they want. But what they love even more is being able to come home to what they regard as their own little corner of heaven — a town filled with true grit and amazing grace that is both remarkably simple and simply remarkable. The thing is, the people of Gallatin have got some attitude. They would rather focus on enjoying their own lives than worry about keeping up with the Joneses, with Nashville or anyone else. Strong character and strong opinions mean they do things their own way, with an eye toward what works not what’s trending. And they’re refreshingly unconcerned about trying to impress people — which is what impresses so many people who come here. Maybe Gallatin’s attitude comes from age and experience. The grit and grace sure do. Both have been here for a long, long time. Gallatin is no newly minted suburb or bedroom community; it was established in 1802 as the seat of Sumner County. Even before it was formally incorporated, it served as home base for independent-minded people of legendary grit and courage – from long hunters to patriots – looking to settle Tennessee. That same spirit is alive and well today . . . in hardworking men and women who support their families, their community and their country. You heard right. It’s still cool to be patriotic in Gallatin. That grit is evident in the tenacity of entrepreneurs who have risked it all for a dream. In the faces of students – whether pursuing a degree or work skills – on the main campus of Gallatin’s groundbreaking Vol State Community College. In the wear and tear etched into the bricks of beautiful buildings hundreds of years old. And the calluses on the hands of blue collar workers and farmers whose strength and will are the cornerstone of the American dream. Not to mention, in the dents and dings on the town’s many trucks (Chevy, of course!) whose work ethic, endurance and ageless style embody the spirit of Gallatin. Anyone who has ever watched the two local high school teams play football (especially against each other) are familiar 89 |

with Gallatin grit. Grit is also at the heart of the success of big companies like Servepro, Berreta and the Gap (along with many others) who decided to settle in a small Tennessee town and have reaped the benefits tenfold. Grit truly is that “extra something” that separates successful people and places from the rest. But room to grow, supportive leadership, a prime location, and a lower tax structure don’t hurt either. For every example of grit in Gallatin, there is a beautiful grace note, too. Most towns lean more toward one quality or the other. That a place known for its hard-working grit would also be filled with such amazing grace makes Gallatin both distinct and distinctly appealing. Even before you enter the city limits, you’re aware of the natural grace — the abundant trees and rolling hills, sweeping green pastures and the curves of long driveways leading to historic estates – that are reminders of the city’s gracious horsebreeding past. You’ll see it on mornings when the fog rises off the Cumberland River, and in the relaxed beauty of Old Hickory Lake. You’ll hear it in the peals of church bells that ring out every Sunday. You’ll find it in neighborhoods with some of Middle Tennessee’s finest homes, where kids still ride bikes and you can still borrow a cup of sugar. It seems that grace is the gentle glue that elevates neighbors to friends and friends to family. Most of all, though, you’ll notice Gallatin’s gracious hospitality. No one is a stranger here. In every store, every restaurant, every church or school or event, you’ll be greeted with gusto. In fact, tolerance and a “live and let live” mindset are all part of the Gallatin attitude. Turns out when people are comfortable being who they are, they’re equally comfortable with you being whatever you want to be. Of course, people here don’t really try to analyze it all that much. They just know the spirit is real. If you’re in Gallatin, you’re part of Gallatin. It’s that simple. Here’s the truth about grit and grace. These aren’t qualities you can manufacture (although many towns have tried). You can’t retrofit them into your downtown or instill them into the character of your people. Grit and grace are as old as the hills that define the Gallatin landscape. They grow from your roots. From your character. And that’s why the people of Gallatin consider themselves so darn lucky. Because they love being able to live with the freedom that arises from that rare combination of grit and grace. It’s Gallatin’s secret sauce. And none of the ingredients are artificial.
