WELCOME

welcome to

H

ome. For me that is Gallatin, Tennessee. I have always heard that “Life takes you unexpected places, but love brings you home.” When you grow up in a small town in the South, you spend a lot of time dreaming of other places to live and how great they must be. In my story, that other place was Washington, D.C., and the funny thing is, while living there, all I ever thought about was coming back home. In 2012, I did just that, returning with a young family to the place that I love.

"Life takes you unexpected places, but love brings you home."

Our small city on the banks of Old Hickory Lake is filled with rich history, a true sense of community, and the kindest people you will ever meet. Over the last several years our city has seen incredible growth and opportunity which our strong local leadership has harnessed to better our city. In 2020, the Gallatin Chamber invites you to join us. We look forward to serving you and your business and helping you and our city continue to prosper in the coming years. If you are thinking about relocating your home or business to Gallatin, I would strongly encourage you to come visit and feel for yourself what “home” feels like. Our future is bright, and the best is yet to come. § Respectfully, Taylor Walker Chairman Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce Taylor Walker, Chairman Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce 66

ust east of Gallatin is Cragfont mansion, an impressive cut stone structure that was home to one of the area’s first settlers, Revolutionary war hero General James Winchester. Even today, the house and grounds reflect a grand style. To the neighboring families on the wilderness frontier, construction of this massive house sent a clear message: the Winchesters were here to stay, despite deadly attacks by Native Americans in the years prior. General Winchester’s own brother had been ambushed and scalped in 1794. Walk into Cragfont today and step into a treasure trove of cultural and architectural history. Don’t be surprised if you experience paranormal activity. In fact, the mansion has been featured on The Travel Channel’s “Haunted Live” television show.

Construction on the cut stone house started in 1798 and took four years to complete. Stone masons, carpenters, and joiners were brought 600 miles from Maryland through the wilderness to work on the house. A Native's Perspective

The Cook family enjoys one of Gallatin’s many greenways.

If you want to find an expert on GalLatin’s expansive city park system, loOk no further than Ashley Cline CoOk. Born and raised in GalLatin, Ashley grew up playing outdoOr sports, including softbalL, socCer, track, and basketbalL. She recalLs spending many hours at GalLatin city park facilities, especialLy Municipal Park. “It's neat to see how much the city’s parks have evolved since the 1990s,” notes Ashley. “I played softball at Municipal Park through city leagues and while I was in middle school. The baseball fields at Triple Creek Park opened when I was in high school, and the Gallatin team played there until they built their own field in 2018.”

active in the soccer league, which plays on fields at Triple Creek Park, and in the tee-ball league, which plays at Municipal Park. And they attend special events hosted in the park, such as the annual “Bold Enough Challenge Rodeo” and the carnival that punctuates the end of the soccer year.

Ashley’s husband, Matt, also a Gallatin High School graduate, spent just as much time on the city’s baseball fields. “He spent most of his childhood on the American Legion field at Municipal Park,” she laughs. “He played there every weekend and then twice during the week.”

As much as the kids enjoy playing sports in the parks, it’s the water that they love the most. “If it involves splashing or skipping stones, that's where you'll find them,” Ashley notes. “When they were younger, my kids loved wading in Town Creek where it comes close to the greenway. It’s nice to have that creek there, snaking along the line of the trail.”

After the high school sweethearts married, they found a home on East Main Street not far from the greenway entrance at Sherry Circle. “I spent those first years as a new mother on that greenway,” Ashley remembers. “I was pushing babies around in a double stroller trying to stay in shape.”

Lock 4 Park is another family favorite, with its mountain bike trails and miles of shoreline. “We bought Tucker a kayak for his sixth birthday and we've taken it to Lock 4 a few times to let him get in the water and try it out,” Ashley says. “We also loved the Fire on the Water Music Festival at Lock 4 Park.”

Now that her kids are older—son Tucker is six and daughter Vidye is four—Ashley finds herself using Gallatin city park facilities as much as she ever did—possibly more. Her kids are

Explore the four-mile greenway link between the Gallatin Civic Center and Triple Creek Park. Or check out the Town Creek Greenway, which runs from the entrance of Triple Creek Park along Town Creek to North Water Avenue and on into downtown Gallatin. The last section of the Town Creek Greenway, completed in 2016, continues from Wilmore Street along the creek to North Water Avenue ending at the Farmers Market. Greenway access points include the entrance to Triple Creek Park, Bentley Circle, Barton Drive, Perrolee Street, and Wilmore Street. There is also a trailhead with parking on East Broadway near Tennessee Hardware.

Play in the Park

Gallatin’s public parks make it easy for every member of the family to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Municipal Park is home to the city’s largest playground. Thompson Park, the city’s very first public park, is where you’ll find the ever-popular Skate Park of Gallatin. Clearview Park, located behind historic Union High School, features a wellequipped playground. Bledsoe Creek State Park’s all-inclusive playground gives children of all physical abilities access to outdoor fun. left behind in 1982 was vastly different than the Gallatin she came home to in 2015. “I can say four years in that I'm very happy that we moved back,” she says. “In some ways, it’s like I never left. It wasn't that way at the beginning, but now it is.” Not long after returning, Stephany and her parents decided to do what they’ve long had a passion for. The result: Bee Inspired, a boutique that specializes in home furnishings, décor, floral items, and more. “We want to inspire people to make their house a home, and to do it in their own style,” Stephany notes. “We have new things, we have antique things, and we have previously-loved things that we’ve restyled.”

STAY Bee Inspired owners Stephany Wilkes and her mother, Mary Lee Wilkes, also known as Queen Bee.

What is it about GalLatin that makes it such a desirable place to live? The editor of GalLatin City Guide posed this question to threE residents—one who never left, one who returned after thirty years away, and one who relocated here. One thing is clear: they are alL here to stay.

Stephany Wilkes

What’s it like to grow up in Gallatin, leave for a while, and then come back home? Stephany Wilkes is qualified to answer that question. Born in California to Gallatin natives, Stephany was living in Gallatin by the time she was a year old. She graduated from Gallatin High School, attended Volunteer State Community College, and earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Kentucky University. And then she left, living in Memphis for a few years and then Ohio, picking up a husband along the way. Thirty-three years later, Stephany is back home. “I really didn't think I would ever do it,” she admits. She and her husband had operated a successful business in Columbus, Ohio for several decades. But in 2009, after his health declined, they decided to close their company. Stephany eventually found work in the corporate world. Then, after selling their historic

home and discovering that Stephany’s employer was open to a remote work arrangement, the couple decided to move back to Gallatin. “My mom had health issues of her own,” she remembers. “I was trying to be in Ohio and Tennessee at the same time, and that wasn't working very well. I needed to have all the people I was caring for live in the same town!” Stephany’s husband had never lived outside of Ohio, but he was open to the idea. It didn’t take long for him to fall in love with Tennessee. “He was less resistant to moving than I was because I enjoyed living in the city,” she recalls. “I wasn’t sure that I would like being back in the small-town Gallatin I remembered.” H o w e v e r, the Gallatin Stephany

Now that she’s been back in Gallatin a few years, Stephany feels like she never left. “I've been here long enough now that I've reconnected with everyone,” she notes. “And our store is kind of a place where people come to get a little friendship therapy and retail therapy at the same time. Many of our customers are like that.” Stephany loves having deep roots in the community, especially now that she’s here to nurture important family relationships. “My father was born here and still has lots of family in the area,” she notes. “In the last year, I got to know my 94-yearold uncle before he passed away. He'd always been my uncle, and I'd always loved him, but I had never really gotten to know him on a one-to-one basis until we came back. Nobody was sick when we moved home, but it has kind of been a blessing that we've been here because I've been needed several times since we returned. As my husband says, ‘That’s why we came back.’”

jay ingrum

Attorney Jay Ingrum is about as close as you can get to “native” status without being born in Gallatin. Jay was born in Quantico, Virginia while his father, Bob Ingrum, was serving his country on the Marine base there. The family moved to Knoxville so Bob could attend law school at the University of Tennessee. “John Phillips, Jr. was one of Dad’s law school classmates,” Jay remembered. “After graduation, John was planning to come home to Gallatin to practice law and my dad decided to look for a job in Gallatin, too.”

"I wilL telL anyone I meEt that GalLatin is the center of the universe. I wouldn't think about living anywhere else."

In 1976, Bob Ingrum landed a job as Assistant District Attorney for Robertson and Sumner County. Jay’s mom, Gail Smith Ingrum, found work as a teacher in Sumner County schools. The family settled in Gallatin. Jay grew up in a football-loving family and came of age during Gallatin High School’s football heyday in the mid to late 1970s. “In those days, Gallatin football was king and there was no other place to be on Friday nights,” remembered Jay, who grew up hearing stories about his father’s exploits on the college football field, including matchups with football greats Roger Staubach and Terry Bradshaw. After graduating from Gallatin High School in 1989, Jay went to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication. His first job, working in public relations for McNeely Piggot Fox in Nashville, taught him something important. “I realized how I wanted my life to be,” he remembered. “I wanted to be my own boss and make good money. I wanted to be able to spend time with my children when they were born. I wanted to be a part of the community, and I wanted that community to be Gallatin.” Jay didn’t have to look far to find an example of how to make that vision a reality. “My father had that kind of life, so I decided to do what he did,” said Jay, who worked his way through Nashville School of Law at night while waiting tables, working on loading docks, and working as an insurance adjustor during the day. “I graduated from law school in June 2000 and married my wife, Julie, three months later.” Today, Jay works as an attorney alongside his father and his father’s long-time law partner, both of whom have been practicing law for more than 40 years. “This is truly a family firm,” Jay noted,

Jay Ingrum with his father, Bob Ingram.

adding that Phillips and Ingrum has grown to seven lawyers and ten paralegals. “Josh, John Phillips’ son, is now on staff, and many other staff members have family connections.” How does the Gallatin Jay grew up in compare to the city today? “Gallatin was a rural farm town and much more isolated,” Jay said. “It was harder to get to Nashville—there was no Vietnam Veterans Boulevard—so you didn't leave town all that much. Today, Gallatin is coming into its own. The city’s growth means that there are now places to shop and eat that we never thought we’d have. I remember when there were no sit-down restaurants. It's great to see all these successful people who want to move here and call Gallatin home.” When it comes to being a supporter of Gallatin, it’s hard to top Jay Ingrum. “Nobody loves Gallatin and Gallatin High School like I do,” laughs Jay. “I will tell anyone I meet that Gallatin is the center of the universe. I wouldn't think about living anywhere else.”

Sarah Long, the owner of Petite Perle Ice, sells authentic New Orleans-style snoballs out of a food truck that travels all over Middle Tennessee.

sarah long

It took Sarah Long a lifetime to get to Gallatin. But she’s glad she’s here. She’s home. A native of Kaplan, Louisiana, a small town in the southwest part of the state, Sarah knew about Tennessee—her family vacationed here several times each year—but moving to Gallatin had never been on the table, that is until she needed to find work. Promised a job at a local pharmacy, Sarah moved herself and her five children to Gallatin in 2015. Eventually, she met a local man whose family had lived here for generations. They married two years ago, creating a blended family of seven children ranging in age from five to 19. Today, Sarah is known around town as the snoball lady. She sells authentic New Orleans-style snoballs out of a food truck that goes all over Middle Tennessee. Sarah opened Petite Perle Ice in March 2019 after completing Startup Gallatin, the city’s business incubator program for entrepreneurs. When it comes to these delectable shaved ice treats, Sarah knows a thing or two. “When I was growing up in Kaplan, there was a snoball stand that we’d go to after softball practice,” she remembers. “My friend’s uncle owned it and we would hang out there. When I decided to open a business here in Gallatin, I started out with a completely different idea of what I wanted to do. But then I decided to recreate this treat that I loved so

much as a kid. I wanted my snoballs to be authentic, just like the ones I got from my friend’s stand back in Kaplan, Louisiana. Most people think that just because you buy a machine and you start shaving ice that you’re making snoballs, but that’s not the case. Shaved ice is shaved from a bag. Snoballs are shaved from a block.” What does Sarah love most about her new hometown? The strong sense of community and the undeniable hospitality of the locals top the list. “When I moved here, I had nothing and this community built me up,” she remembers. “The people just loved on me. They made sure I had what I needed. They took care of me. That’s why I decided to stay here.” Sarah is passionate about giving back to the community that supported her when she needed it. Today, she extends that loving spirit to the dozens of new people she meets every day. “When we go somewhere in town, I’ll see someone I know and my husband, who has lived here for almost 50 years, will say ‘You know more people than I know!’ and he’s right! And I wouldn’t have it any other way.” §

Adding to Our Success

Low unemployment. Evolving job skilLs. Realignment of site priorities.

T

oday’s companies – nationwide and internationally – continue to shift their needs when looking to locate a new business or expand an existing one. Manufacturing and distribution have been the mainstay of employment opportunities in Gallatin for several years. The companies here and the jobs they created have helped sustain Gallatin and have provided the city with a strong foundation for growth. Gallatin supports these companies to ensure their continued success. At the same time, we have worked to diversify employment opportunities in Gallatin. During the past two years, we have honed our strategy and focus. We began with the completion of the City’s Strategic Plan. The #2 goal of the City’s plan is “Resilient and Diversified Economy.” The Gallatin Economic Development Agency’s Board of Directors reinforced this goal and challenged staff to pursue highly automated manufacturing and technology firms, along with a variety of management and professional jobs.

26

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

While GalLatin continues to grow at a pace of 270 people a month, the unemployment rate continues to run very low – consistently below 3%. This makes hiring a challenge for every business. As a result, companies are introducing more and more automation into the workplace. A great example of this is Axem. Axem is located in our industrial center and employs less than 20 people, yet it creates more product than similar companies that have four times the employees. Highly automated with robotics and programmable machinery, Axem is productive 24 hours a day. Fewer employees, higher productivity, higher skill sets, and higher pay. They are exactly the type of company that will add to Gallatin’s prosperity. Pursuit of technology-related companies has become a clear #1 goal for the Gallatin EDA. Our efforts paid off when Archer Datacenters announced they had chosen Gallatin as the home

of their first of potentially several data centers nationwide. Currently under construction, this center will eventually house up to 200,000 sq. ft of computer equipment (data hall space) but will require less than 20 employees, all with high-paying jobs.

here to grow

Axem, a company now headquartered in Gallatin, makes small firearms parts using advanced technology and robotics.

The #2 goal of the City’s plan is “Resilient and Diversified Economy.”

We still want new jobs in Gallatin, but we are being more strategic about the types of new jobs we add. We announced several new headquarters and existing industry expansions in 2019. These came with more than 500 jobs, less than 40 of them in the manufacturing sector. Approximately 400 of them were in the consulting arena.

Gallatin’s Vol State Community College provides advanced training through its new Mechatronics facility.

Companies like these are able to locate in different places around town, not just in the industrial center. Locating in different areas in the city benefits restaurants and other retail businesses. Consequently, Gallatin has four new retail centers which are now open, under construction, or in progress. Again – Gallatin already had a very solid manufacturing foundation. The city also benefits from an extensive health care community, two colleges, and a diversified employment base. Our focus on technology and corporate offices will only add to our success. §

InNovate – one of GalLatin EDA’s strawtegies – became the theme of the agency’s anNual Manufacturing Day lunch honoring the city’s existing industries.

ant to see a community filled with thriving churches? Come to Gallatin! In addition to meeting the needs of their congregations, most of the city’s churches are actively working to improve the lives of others through a variety of ministry efforts. Here’s a recap of just a few of the ministries that are making a difference in our community.

Gallatin First United Methodist Church

Gallatin First United Methodist Church connects with many of the congregation’s neighbors through its extensive music ministry. The church expanded its musical program in 2018 to include a Master’s Creative Arts Camp for children. During the week-long event in June, professional music instructors provide instruction in voice, winds, percussion, strings, keyboards, and art. The camp also offers basic music theory training. The camp’s daily schedule includes private and group lesson experiences as well as large ensemble rehearsal time. The church subsidizes the cost of the camp so fees for participation are nominal. Eighty-six students, grades three through nine, participated in the camp in 2019 – nearly double the number of children who attended the previous year. Another camp is planned in 2020. Senior Pastor James C. Johnson reflects on the GFUMC music ministry: “Our action statement is 1 John 3:18 (NRSV), ‘Let us love not in word or speech but in truth and action.’ Music is one of truest languages of humanity. Through music, we work together for truth and the deepest sense of self-less love as we find our way to play together the music of the heart.” 30

First Presbyterian Church Gallatin

One of the largest of the many ministry projects at First Presbyterian is The Foundation for Children are People. First Presbyterian is heading into their seventh year of this joint project between First Presbyterian and Children Are People, a local non-profit after-school program that works with atrisk children. During several months of the school year, First Presbyterian invites some of the students of Children Are People to the church once a week to work on creative projects. Fifteen to twenty children ranging in age from eight to fifteen participate each week. Classes vary each year depending on the children's interests and the skills of volunteer teachers. Class subjects in the past have included sewing, cooking, baking, painting,

HERE TO worship jewelry-making, cake decorating, flower arranging, woodworking, songwriting, crochet, photography, videography, and a variety of crafts. Some of the children have taken lessons in guitar, piano, violin, and drums. Last year, the students put together and painted their own ukuleles from kits—and the year before that, they recorded a music video.

St. John Vianney Catholic Church

One of the most visible ministries at St. John Vianney is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Serving the Gallatin community since 2010, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a group of volunteers who offer person-to-person assistance for those who need financial assistance with expenses such as rent, utilities, car-related costs, and medical bills. The Society also provides emergency assistance by helping those in need secure food, clothing, prescription medication, furniture, and household items. Support begins with an in-home interview so Society of St. Vincent de Paul volunteers can carefully assess the situation and recommend the best shortand long-term solutions. Through the time spent with those in need, Society of St. Vincent de Paul is living the Gospel Message of serving the poor. Last year, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helped 832 individuals in need. St. John Vianney Catholic Church provides a hotline for people to request help from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Calls are returned within 48 hours. The hotline is available 24 hours a day at (615) 452-2977 extension 11.

First Baptist Church, Gallatin

Offering nearly 40 distinct ministries that create ways for people to make a difference in their church, in the community, and in the world, First Baptist Church, Gallatin is an active and thriving worship community. Ministry opportunities include music, visiting the sick, recovery, drama, intercessory prayer, scholarships, and more.

freedom church

The Freedom Church family believes in partnering with parents as they raise their children. That’s why one of the church’s signature programs is the kids’ and student ministry. The ministry’s goal is to help children grow their faith in

God and reach their full God-potential. Each week, Freedom Church creates exciting environments that captivate kids and students as they learn about a God who loves them and wants a relationship with them. Freedom Church’s kids’ and student ministries have dedicated and caring adult mentors who love investing in young lives. Life is not easy for young people, and Freedom Church wants them to know that there are people who care about them, but even more importantly, that God loves them to the extreme.

First Baptist Church Winchester Street

At First Baptist Winchester, the capstone ministry is the Unlimited Potential Community Development Corporation. Founded in 2001, this faith-based 501(c)3 nonprofit is the brainchild of Dr. Derrick L. Jackson and members of First Baptist Church Winchester Street. Realizing there were critical needs to be met in Gallatin and Sumner County at large, Dr. Jackson set out to establish a not-for-profit organization dedicated to community and economic development through building human, social, and physical capital in the community. Unlimited Potential's impact in the community can be seen in its 2015 development of the Community Life Center, which is a 14,000 square foot facility that offers a full basketball gym, state-of-the-art weightlifting facility, and a Pilates and Jazzercise space to individuals who would not otherwise have access to such facilities. In 2018, Unlimited Potential acquired two duplexes and began offering affordable housing in the Portland and Lebanon area. In addition to the growth of Unlimited Potential’s physical presence over the years, it has also grown its program offerings by providing classes for first-time homeowners, a staywarm shelter for people experiencing homelessness, and a summer camp focusing on literacy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and personal development.

Started in 1798 and completed in 1802 by General James Winchester, Cragfont was regarded as the finest mansion house on the Tennessee frontier. The house typified the grandeur and style of the best of the late Georgian period homes. The General named his mansion "Cragfont" because of its position on a rocky bluff with a spring at its base. The mansion is open for public tours from April 15 through November 1, and you can host weddings and other special events on the grounds.

Goddard is also a STEM school, which gives kids early exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math. “We have a lot of great teachers who work really hard to create a fantastic environment for young children,” Leisa notes. “Overall, it's just a great place for children to learn, grow, and make friends.” All Goddard Schools are highly visible in the communities they serve. “In the ten years since our Hendersonville location opened, we’ve made it a point to give back to the community that supports us with programs like Santa Cop, food drives for the Samaritan Center, event sponsorships, and generous charitable contributions to organizations such as Gallatin’s Salvus Center,” she explains. Leisa believes that being a part of the Goddard franchise family offers tangible benefits. For one, the owner of each location is supported by a team of directors who oversee the talented staff. “Our dual management model is very effective,” she says. “The directors are on site every day managing the school while I work to market the school and be visible in the community.” Another advantage involves know-how. The Goddard School’s corporate headquarters employs many of the country’s leading authorities on early childhood education, which means that franchise owners like Leisa are running their schools using the latest best practices. The formula is clearly working. The school has been voted Sumner Parent Magazine’s Best Preschool in Sumner County for eight of the last nine years. And in 2018, the school edged out 499 other franchise owners to win Goddard Corporate’s coveted Humanitarian Award, which recognizes the Goddard School location that does the most to support their local community. Also, Leisa Byers was named Franchisee of the Year in 2015. Despite all the awards, Leisa hasn’t lost sight of her primary goal. “When children graduate from the Goddard School, they’re ready for the next phase of their education,” she added. “We take pride in the fact that we can provide a warm, welcoming space where children can learn and grow.”

work together GalLatin has more than its share of power couples who have a positive impact on the comMunity. Let’s meEt threE of the city’s most dynamic duos.

son graduated a few years ago; the other will graduate in the class of 2020. “We carry that Green Wave spirit with us even more now,” laughed Stephanie.

Richie & Stephanie Harville

“When you're young and you're in school, you have big dreams and want to travel the world,” said Richie. “The irony is that we're back in the same town we grew up in and we wouldn't have it any other way.”

If you look up Gallatin Fans in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of this dynamic duo next to the definition. Stephanie Harville has spent her entire career in health care and nursing home management, with the last 14 years as executive director of Morningside of Gallatin Assisted Living. Richie Harville has worked for the Gallatin branch of Wilson Bank and Trust for nearly a decade. The couple were both raised in Gallatin and were high school sweethearts. After they graduated from college and decided to get married, they struck an agreement: they would go where the opportunity was. Initially, Stephanie had the best job prospects so they packed up and moved to Chattanooga so she could work as a management trainee for a nursing home. Eighteen months later, they moved to Lynchburg, Tennessee when Stephanie was tapped to run a nursing home across the street from the Jack Daniel's distillery. Eventually, they found their way back to Middle Tennessee, and then to Gallatin. Since returning to live in their hometown eight years ago, Richie and Stephanie have immersed themselves in community service. They are both members of the Gallatin Rotary Club; Richie is a past president. Both have been active members of the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce, where Stephanie is currently a board member and Richie is a past board member. They have both served on the Rosemont board and they’re active in the Cairo Community Club. Richie is on the board of Gallatin Economic Development Agency. Richie and Stephanie are especially proud of the fact that their two sons have had the opportunity to attend Gallatin High School. One 56

Stephanie agrees. “We’ve each been able to make a positive contribution to the community,” she added. “It’s great to come home and be an insider in the community we love so much.”

Justin & Heather Hays This Gallatin power couple juggles careers and two young children, yet they still find time to make a difference in their community. As Macon County Bank & Trust’s city president and commercial lender, Justin Hays is a familiar face in Gallatin’s business community. Born and raised in Gallatin, Justin graduated from Gallatin High School, earned a degree in business management from Volunteer State Community College, and then entered the banking field. After working his way up the ranks at two nationally known banks, Justin was approached by Macon County Bank & Trust to run its new Gallatin location and build the bank’s commercial lending business. Heather Hays, also a Gallatin native, is a well-known leader in Gallatin’s education community. After graduating from Gallatin High School, Heather left to attend Tennessee State University to earn her bachelor’s degree. She later earned a master’s degree from Lipscomb University and taught fifth grade at Guild Elementary School in Gallatin. Eventually, she returned to Lipscomb to earn her Reading Specialty Endorsement. Heather now serves as a Title I Reading Specialist and Teacher Leader at Guild. Both are active in the community, each in their own way. Justin is a 2017 graduate of Leadership Sumner and current president of that organization’s board. He is president of the board for Gallatin Childcare Center, a needs-based non-profit daycare center that caters to lower-income families in Gallatin, and a member of the

here to work together Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Heather’s community involvement centers around Guild Elementary, where she focuses on creating a learning environment where faculty can contribute, and children can excel. She’s heavily involved in planning events at Guild to help make sure that families are immersed in the school’s positive culture. Justin and Heather both love their hometown. “We grew up here and we both have a ton of memories,” said Heather. “I enjoy raising our children here because there's just so much to love about Gallatin. We’re very fortunate to have such a great school system.” For Justin, the people make the difference. “I know that it’s a cliché, but I have had opportunity to work in a lot of places through my banking career, including other cities in this area,” Justin added. “We really do have the best citizens in Gallatin. I can’t think of any other place I would rather live.”

randy & ashlee nash For Ashlee and Randy Nash, their story began eight years ago with a blind date at a local Mexican restaurant. The date had an unusual ending. Randy misplaced his debit card, so Ashlee had to buy their first meal together. It was an auspicious beginning for this couple, whose Sumner County roots run deep. In fact, the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce played a role in their relationship. Ashlee was one of the leaders of the Chamber’s organization for young professionals and Randy was serving on the Chamber board. “All the ladies at the Chamber were mutual friends of ours,” Ashlee remembers. “They were thrilled when Randy and I got together.” Born and raised in Gallatin, Ashlee left town to study interior design at Middle Tennessee State University and then returned to begin

her career. A few years later, she purchased a local furniture store that had been in operation for nearly 50 years. That was five years ago. Today, Binkley Nash Furniture & Design provides furniture, accessories, interior design, and custom window treatments to clients throughout Middle Tennessee. “It’s such an honor and privilege to own and operate a business in my hometown and to build relationships with those new to our community as well as those who have been here for generations,” Ashlee says. Randy grew up in the Shackle Island area of Hendersonville and began working in the funeral service industry at the tender age of 14. After graduating from Nashville’s John A. Gupton College, Randy began his career as a funeral director. He now oversees operations at Crestview Funeral Home and Memory Gardens and has emerged as a leader in his industry. Randy is currently serving as president of the Tennessee Funeral Directors Association, a 500-member organization that includes 230 funeral homes in the state. Randy is as passionate about community service as he is about his work in the funeral industry. “I jumped in feet first with the community and got involved with the Gallatin Chamber back when Paige Brown was leading the organization,” notes Randy, who is completing his eighth year on the Chamber board of directors and is the board’s immediate past chairman. He also serves as the chairman of the Friends of the Gallatin City Cemetery committee. A graduate of Leadership Sumner and a former member of the Leadership Sumner board of directors, Randy also spent a decade working as a reserve deputy for the Sumner County Sheriff's Office. Though looking after two babies and running a thriving business have reduced the time Ashlee has available to serve in civic roles, it hasn’t diminished her commitment to her hometown. “When you shop with a local business, you make an impact on that person's family directly, and it goes directly back into that community,” Ashlee notes. “When my customers spend their money with me, I turn around and give that money right back to the community. It’s a great thing.”

Justin & Heather Hays

Randy agrees. “I love being a part of the Gallatin community,” he adds. “It’s like that old TV show “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name.” § 2020 CITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY

O’Charley’s Restaurant + Bar Located on Nashville Pike, O’Charley’s Restaurant + Bar offers classic southern food, American comfort staples, a kids' menu, and a full bar. This Nashvillebased chain of restaurants strives to be the favorite local spot in every market they serve. Based on the number of cars in their parking lot on any given night, they are succeeding! What are the most popular items on O’Charley’s menu? Best-selling entrees include the Slow-Roasted Prime Rib, hand-rubbed with herbs and spices, and the Famous Chicken Tenders Dinner, which features hunks of chicken dipped in buttermilk, hand-breaded twice, and cooked fresh to order. Locals go crazy for the Ooey Gooey Caramel Pie, a slice of heaven that features creamy caramel in a graham cracker crust topped with real whipped cream, milk chocolate shavings, and pecans. And then there’s Free Pie Wednesday, where customers purchasing an entrée can get a free slice of any O’Charley’s pie—a promotion that has become a Gallatin institution.

If your taste buds are on high alert and you’re in the moOd for great eats, there’s no shortage of dining options in GalLatin. Round up the family and head out to one of the city’s many eateries with a regional or national presence. You’lL find restaurants you know and love, including BufFalo Wild Wings, Captain D's, Chickfil-A, Logan's Roadhouse, O'Charley's Kitchen + Bar, WhitT’s Barbecue, Cracker BarRel, two McDonald's locations, and many more. These restaurants draw big crowds from throughout northern Middle TenNesSeE, so plan acCordingly!

For Service Manager Tabatha Gregory, running a restaurant in her hometown is fun and gratifying. “My customers are my friends,” notes Tabatha, who has worked at the Gallatin O’Charley’s location for the past 15 years. “I love the fact that the people coming to my restaurant are the same people I see in the grocery store and sit with at ballgames. They’re the teachers in my kids’ school and the professionals we rely on. I love being a part of this community.”

Buffalo Wild Wings This lively sports bar chain dishes up wings and other American pub grub amid lots of large-screen TVs. “We are the Great American Sports Bar,” says Michael Gregory, General Manager of Buffalo Wild Wings’ Gallatin location. “We’re run by locals, and our goal is to provide the best experience, service, food, and everything we have to offer to our guests.”

In addition to fan-favorite bar food items like mozzarella sticks, nachos, fried pickles, and their legendary wings, Buffalo Wild Wings also offers a selection of sandwiches, wraps, greens, and more. There’s even a kids’ menu. “Everything is a best seller,” Gregory notes. “Our bar food is amazing, our wings are the best around, and our beer is the coldest you’ll get anywhere.” Though Gallatin’s Buffalo Wild Wings is part of a large national chain, they have managed to avoid being just another disconnected corporation doing business in the city. “We’re definitely community-connected,” adds Gregory. “On our leadership team, we’re all locals. And we strive to give our team the best environment around.”

Chick-fil-A This fast-food chain serves all things chicken, including sandwiches, strips,

and nuggets, along with salads and sides. Top quality has always been the Chickfil-A approach to food, and because chicken is at the center of their menu, that means serving only whole, boneless breasts of chicken with no fillers or artificial preservatives. All chickens are antibiotic-free and sourced from farms in the USA.

Chick-fil-A

For Greg Garretson, owner of the Gallatin Chick-fil-A, his eatery is about more than just food. “Building relationships with our customers is important to us,” he says. “Many of the people who eat at our restaurant become our personal friends.” Gallatin’s Chick-fil-A location is also committed to making a difference in the community by sponsoring events and programs, including Gallatin Child Safety Day (Chick-fil-A was the title

sponsor) and the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, which provides person-toperson service to individuals in need. If you’ve walked into a Chick-fil-A and felt a warm welcome, it’s no accident. Everyone's job at Chick-fil-A is to serve. Whether it's treating customers like friends, or serving our communities like neighbors, they believe kindness is a higher calling—and it shows! §
