Legacy Businesses

LEGACY BUSINESSES:

Generations of Genuine Rae Lynn Silcox, Nancy Corlew, and Rob Corlew

Family businesses are a powerful engine of growth, especially in Gallatin. The city is blessed with many family-owned businesses that have stood the test of time. Who are these entrepreneurs? What’s their story? Gallatin City Guide profiles three of the finest.

Corlew Appliance Parts & Service

If you want to see what a true family business looks like, visit Corlew Appliance Parts & Service at 117 North Water St. According to business manager Rae Lynn Silcox, the launch of this legacy business dates back to the early 1960s when her uncle, founder Ray Corlew, started repairing TV sets. Eventually, he transitioned to appliance repair. The business, as it’s known today, has been around since 1985. When it comes to appliances, Corlew covers all the bases. Buyers can find reconditioned household units of all kinds, as well as a wide variety of parts. When appliances need service, Corlew

technicians venture out to homes to make repairs. They also have inside shop service for people willing to bring their appliances to storefront. “The majority of our business is appliance repair,” Rae Lynn notes. “We fix all kinds of appliances, from the largest side-by-side refrigerators to the smallest countertop microwaves. We’re also noticing that more people are attempting to do their own repairs. We’re seeing an increase in the sale of over the counter parts as people try do-it-yourself fixes.” What's it like to be the second genera-

tion working in a family business? It’s business first at work but family first at home. “People think that when you work with family, you have it made,” adds Rae Lynn, who has been working in the business for the last 15 years. “In many ways, you do. Working for my uncle has been a great experience.”

Historical Gallatin Legacy Businesses

In this family business, everyone does a little bit of everything. Rae Lynn works closely with Ray’s son, Rob, who’s also her cousin. Her aunt Nancy (Uncle Ray’s sister in-law) is also on staff. “We all have our jobs but we each have our specialties,” she says. “Customer service, selling parts, dispatching—we all do everything except for the repairs. Those are handled by John, a service technician who's been with us for 18 years, and his son, Little John, who has been with us for about a decade. Though they’re not Corlews, they might as well be. We’re a family business employing family. Everything about us is family.”

nearing retirement age, Johnny and his cousin, E.H. (Sonny) Garrott III, purchased the family business from their fathers. In 2000, Johnny purchased his cousin's share of Garrott Brothers and became sole owner of company. As Gallatin and Sumner County have grown, Garrott Brothers has been there to support the growth. Garrott Brothers Continuous Mix Concrete

Garrott Brothers Continuous Mix, Inc., a full-service ready mixed concrete supplier, has been providing concrete to clients in Sumner, Robertson, Wilson, Macon, and Davidson counties for more than 50 years. The business, currently in its third generation, is owned by John B. (Johnny) Garrott, Jr. According to Johnny, it all started in the late 1940s when his grandfather, E. H. Garrott, Sr., an engineer for the state of Tennessee, started an excavating business with his high schoolage son (Johnny's father), John B. Garrott, Sr. "When my dad got out of high school, he decided to work for his dad," says Johnny. "Grandpa hocked a bulldozer for a 2-cubic yard and a 3-cubic yard mixer, and they were in the concrete business as E.H. Garrott & Son.” It was 1950 and their first project was pouring city sidewalks on Main Street in Gallatin. A few years later, Johnny's uncles E.H. (Bud) Garrott, Jr. and Tommy Garrott joined the fold. Eventually, the company was renamed Garrott Brothers Continuous Mix, Inc. Johnny ended up joining the business after a brief stint in college. "My mom and dad took me to Vol State and dropped me off at the front door, and I ran out the back door as fast as I could," says Johnny. In 1989, with the original Garrott Brothers

Their largest project to date, Gap, Inc., often required production and delivery around the clock in order to meet construction deadlines. Today, the company is going strong, and Johnny is grooming a fourth generation--his son-in-law, Daniel Bugbee--to take over the business in the future. The Garrott Brothers’ legacy of community involvement also spans several generations. In addition to supporting many local events and causes, the company was a major catalyst in the effort to preserve the historic Palace Theater. In 1992, Johnny and his cousin purchased the Palace at auction and donated it to Greater Gallatin, Inc., the following year. The theater was eventually restored and reopened to the public in 2000. "You take from the community and you give back to the community," adds Johnny. "If it weren't for the people in Gallatin, Garrott Brothers wouldn't exist. The people here believed in us and made us what we are today. We are very grateful." The main office of Garrott Brothers Continuous Mix Concrete is located at 375 Red River Road in Gallatin. Gallatin Mini Storage

How does a family business start? Sometimes a light bulb just goes off in your head. That’s what happened to Albert Bennett. Employed in the silver refining business, Albert traveled the nation servicing customers that included hospitals, printers, and other companies using the photographic process to produce images. In 1978, while servicing customers in other parts of the country, Albert discovered self-storage out of the need for short term storage of materials. Nothing like it existed in Gallatin at the time, so Albert decided to bring the idea home. He bought property on Airport Road, built the first building, plastered the phone number on the side, and waited for people to call. At first, the only calls were from people wondering what the business was. Before long, people started renting. Eventually, the 440 units on Airport Road were filled. Albert and his wife, Ladye Lou Bennett, ran the business until 1995 when their son, Phillip, got involved. Phillip actually didn’t intend to work in the business. “When I finished college, I was working in graphic communications sitting in front of a computer all day,” remembers Phillip. “I started to realize that I wanted to do something different. When my dad asked me to help him run Gallatin Mini Storage, I said yes.” In 2006, the company added a second location near the intersection of Nichols Lane and State Route 109. “We opened the day the tornado hit Gallatin,” Phillip remembers. “Thanks to

that storm, we went from zero occupancy that Friday to more than 80 percent occupancy two days later.” Today, business is booming, though occupancy fluctuates with the seasons. “We tend to get busy during moving season, which starts when the weather breaks in late February and lasts through October,” says Phillip. “Things then slack off as the holidays approach.” Is a third location in the works? “We've talked about it, but we don’t want to stretch ourselves too thin,” Phillip admits. “We're a small, family-owned business and we tend to be hands-on. We don’t want to lose that attention to detail that we’re able to give our customers. It’s one of the reasons they keep coming back.” What is Phillip’s favorite part of doing business in Gallatin? “When you’re running a business that has been around since 1979, you get to know a lot of people,” he says. “Those people come back ten years later and you pick up right where you left off—like those ten years didn’t even happen. Gallatin is like that. Even though lots of new people are moving in, we tend to have that same kind of relationship with everyone. We’re in a growing, forward-moving community, yet we feel like we’re doing business in a small town. You can’t beat that.” Gallatin Mini Storage offices are located at 120 Nichols Lane in Gallatin. Sites to See HISTORIC ROSE MONT

By Kendall Masters, Site Director, Rose Mont

R

ose Mont was the home of Judge Josephus Conn Guild (1802 - 1883) and Katherine Blackmore Guild. The name "Rose Mont" references the once extensive rose garden at the north side of the house. A smaller replication of the rose garden has been installed near the original location outside the farm office. Originally, Rose Mont was a working thoroughbred horse and longhorn cattle farm of 500 acres, and the property owners also contracted materials found on the site. Original supporting structures of the thoroughbred business and farm are long since gone from the property, leaving only the original house and kitchen structures. The house was built from 1836 to 1842 with the center section, galleries, and detached kitchen constructed first, followed by the wings. At the time, Tennessee houses typically were plain, box-like structures modeled after late Georgian or Federal design. However, Guild was a frequent visitor to New Orleans and was greatly influenced by the unusual architecture found there. He incorporated Creole design elements in Rose Mont, including wide porches, large windows, open-air halls

and staircases, separate wings connected by loggias and galleries, a raised basement, and an extended roof. Even so, the main facade (east front) is based on classic Italian design (Villa Mocenigo) by Andrea Palladio, a highly regarded architect who lived and worked during the 18th century. Palladio's influence dominated the architecture of the South's plantations well into mid19th century. Guild was active in the thoroughbred horse races that were popular in Tennessee, which no doubt influenced his decision to start his own thoroughbred stud farm at Rose Mont. Another famous Tennessean who was influential in the thoroughbred race scene – and who was likely seen by Guild at local races –was President Andrew Jackson. According to F. Leigh Branham, a descendant of Guild, some of Guild’s more famous thoroughbred racers included Beeswing, Hiawatha, and Jack Malone. Beeswing netted Guild $14,100 during her run in 1839-1840 and was mentioned as one of the 12 fastest thoroughbreds in her lifetime. Hiawatha earned a $12,000 purse in Gallatin; he lived out his

life as a stud at Rose Mont and was buried on the Guild property. Jack Malone, while successful in producing good offspring, was ultimately sold by Guild to another local thoroughbred stud farm: Belle Meade Plantation, owned by William Giles Harding of Nashville, where Jack Malone sired many excellent racers. During the Civil War years, both Guild and Harding were taken prisoner together and held in a Union Army prison in Michigan. During their incarceration, it is possible that thoroughbred discussions between the men may have helped pass the time. Rose Mont has many events throughout the year, including but not limited to festivals, classes on various topics, and living history interpretations. A new tradition is “Run for Rose Mont” – the Rose Mont Derby party held during the Kentucky Derby race in May. There is really something for everyone at Rose Mont. The house can be used as an event venue for weddings, corporate events, and birthday parties. §

Gallatin's Parks: A Canine Perspective

With more than 500 acres of parks, nearly five miles of greenways, a full service public fitness facility, and endless recreational opportunities, Gallatin is a place that beckons everyone, even the family dog, to come outside.

M

y name is Artemis and I’m a Pudelpointer, a cross between the German hunting poodle and the English Pointer. When the editors of Gallatin City Guide asked me and my owners to visit Gallatin’s various parks and recreation facilities, I jumped at the chance. In the spirit of full disclosure, it’s important that you know that I was compensated for my time with hundreds of treats, dozens of belly rubs, and 10 hours of fetch. My owners are still recovering from that.

Greenways

I love to run. Thanks to Gallatin’s expansive greenway system, I can run as much as I want. When my owner picks up my leash, I get excited because we’re usually headed for the five miles of paved greenway trails that wind throughout the city. I love the four-mile greenway link between the Gallatin Civic Center and Triple Creek Park as well as the Town Creek Greenway, which runs from the entrance of Triple Creek Park along Town Creek to Perolee Street in Gallatin’s Historic Woodson Terrace Neighborhood. Sometimes, we bike into Gallatin’s historic square where I get lots of attention (people love my furry face) and sometimes a special yummy treat from one of the shops.

Parks

Arabella, one of my owners, gets me ready for a picnic lunch at Clearview Park. Maybe she’ll slip me a piece of hamburger under the table?

14

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

You might be surprised to know that dogs like history. I like to know how things came to be. That’s why I love it when my owners take me to Thompson Park, the city’s very first public park. Located just south of Gallatin’s historic square, this park was once home to an Olympic-size public swimming pool which is now covered by the popular Skate Park of Gallatin. I love watching the fearless skateboarders working to

perfect their tricks on the park’s built-in ramps, rails, and half pipes. Municipal Park is a great place for a dog. Trust me. My owners took me there to watch the kids play on their Little League team. This park is home to baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, three picnic pavilions, a leafy picnic area, and the city’s largest playground. I like it when my owners take me to Clearview Park, located just behind historic Union High School. Gallatin's Parks And just a few minutes beyond the city limits is Bledsoe Creek State Park’s new all-inclusive playground designed to accommodate all children, including those with disabilities. One of my owners is a little boy who needs a wheelchair to get around and this park is his favorite place in the world. Next to running around in the city’s parks and greenways, my favorite thing to do is eat. Nearly every park in the city has covered picnic shelters and leafy picnic areas. Some, like Triple Creek Park, have large event pavilions that can accommodate crowds. You can reserve those shelters at the city’s website at www.gallatintn.gov. No matter where we picnic, my owners grill up savory treats that always seem to find their way to my mouth, thanks to the littles who slip me scraps under the table.

Gallatin Civic Center

" I wish more than anything that I could go down the waterslides at the Tommy Garrott Aquatics Center."

Dogs can’t go everywhere so I’ll just pass on what I’ve been told about the Gallatin Civic Center. It’s a 65,000 square-foot facility built in 1994, and it’s available to all Gallatin residents for a small daily admission fee or an affordable annual membership. There are fitness areas, meeting rooms, a double gym, racquetball and basketball courts, and an indoor pool, which offers eight 25-yard swimming lanes and a roped off shallow end for free play and water exercise classes. One of my owners goes to the Civic Center every morning to play raquetball. In my opinion, the most exciting new development at the Civic Center is the Tommy Garrott Aquatics Facility, a giant outdoor pool complex that opened in 2017. It features Gallatin's first zero-depth pool complete with a splash pad, a 57-foot speed slide, a 134-foot waterslide, and a 167-foot waterslide. There are party areas, a kids’ train slide, a water tower, spray toys, umbrellas, two concession areas, and plenty of room to relax. Admission prices are super reasonable. I just wish that dogs were allowed. Maybe someday… The Civic Center’s second floor is home to an aerobics room equipped with a solid hardwood Exerflex aerobic floor supported by foam cushioning to absorb shock, reduce fatigue, and lower the risk of injury. The Civic Center also doubles as an event venue, hosting a number of concerts, sports competitions, craft shows, coin shows, and celebrations each year.

Golf

"I can’t get in the pool at the Tommy Garrott Aquatics Center so I’ll have to make do with a dip in Old Hickory Lake at Lock 4 Park!"

I’m not a golfer but my owners enjoy it and Gallatin’s temperate climate means they can play all year long. They like Long Hollow Golf Course, a well-conditioned, city-owned, eighteen-hole public course that features a driving range and golf instruction. Three other private courses serve the area. Gallatin Country Club offers a beautifully manicured nine-hole golf course, swimming pool, and clubhouse for its growing membership. Fairvue Plantation and Foxland Harbor Golf and Country Club, both on the city’s southwest side, offer their members worldclass golf and country club amenities. §

A Pet-Friendly Community

What does it take for a city to be considered a pet-friendly community? Dog parks, greenways, and wide-open spaces are a plus, but it takes more than that. It takes pet owners who are passionate about the well-being of their four-legged friends.

Dr. Bryan Bondurant, owner of the Critter Clinic, has been caring for pets since 1989.

allatin is a community that cares deeply about its animals. Whether you’re taking your pup for a leisurely stroll on the city’s beautiful greenways, romping with Rover at the dog park at Triple Creek, or meandering around the city’s historic square with your fur baby, Gallatin is a great place to have (and be) a pet. Several owners of local businesses that service or support pets explain what they do to make Gallatin a pet-friendly community.

Critter Clinic

Critter Clinic has a place in Gallatin’s history books. The current small animal veterinary practice was originally founded in 1939 as Arrendale Animal Clinic and later purchased in 1989 by Dr. Bryan Bondurant, who changed the name to Critter Clinic after a year. Since then, business has boomed. Critter Clinic moved into its current facility in 2003, and the staff has grown. Dr. Douglas (Bo) Crabtree joined the business as a partner, and two more veterinarians were later added to the staff, including Dr. Julie Becker and Dr. Lindsay Pounds. Companion animals are their focus. “We are a full-service animal hospital that can handle just about any medical care needs for dogs, cats, and a few other small animals,” says Dr. Bondurant, who received his Doctor of Veterinary

Medicine degree in 1985 from the University of Tennessee. “We refer our calls for exotics and large animals to other veterinary practices.” Critter Clinic offers a wide variety of services including ultrasound, x-ray, inhouse bloodwork, EKGs, blood pressure exams, eye pressure exams, laser surgery, laser therapy, stem cell implants, and more. “Almost all the cases we see, we can take care of,” says Dr. Bondurant, whose staff tends to dozens of skin-related, allergyrelated, or preventive health-related cases each week as well as problems with the liver, heart, or kidney. “We will occasionally run across cases that need extra expertise, so we refer these cases to specialty veterinary practices in Nashville, to the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Hospital, or another university research hospital.” The practice has seen an uptick in the demand for once out-of-the ordinary

procedures, including pet dentistry services. “More people are seeing the connection between a pet’s horrible breath, bad teeth and its overall health,” said Dr. Bondurant. “And yes, dogs can even have braces.” According to Dr. Bondurant, when it comes to animal medicine, the sky's the limit. “Most everything that can be done in human medicine can be done with animals. Veterinary medicine has evolved and we’re continuing to evolve with it.” Contact Critter Clinic at (615) 452-1477 or visit www.critterclinic.com.

McMillan Veterinary Clinic

McMillan Veterinary Clinic was founded in 1983 by Dr. Jerry McMillan and his wife, Linda. The staff includes three veterinarians, five veterinary assistants, two receptionists, and two ward technicians who feed, bathe, and exercise the up to 30 pets boarding at the McMillan facility at any one time. “Our team has 146 years of combined experience,” says Dr. Brad Mitchel, the clinic’s supervisory veterinarian and a five-year member of the practice. In addition to Dr. Mitchel, two other veterinarians are available to treat a wide range of disorders. Dr. Roland Abma, a

The clinic offers boarding and grooming for pets and a wide range of veterinary services including surgery, dental care, and internal medicine. “We can do everything from a routine spay or neuter to advanced orthopedic surgery,” says Dr. Brad Mitchell. “We have one of the nicest surgical suites in Sumner County.” What’s the best part about running a veterinary clinic in Gallatin? For Dr. Mitchell, it’s the people. “We know that our clients consider their pets to be family members,” he notes. “The citizens of Gallatin have always treated our clinic well over the years and we consider it a privilege to care for their pets.” McMillan Veterinary Clinic is located at 426 Maple Street in Gallatin. Morningside of Gallatin

Do people who move into retirement communities need to get rid of their pets? Not necessarily. At Morningside of Gallatin, pets are welcome. Their pet policy gives residents the flexibility needed to preserve cherished relationships with four-legged companions. “We all embrace the mentality that our residents are going to be happier, healthier, and enjoying better quality of life if their pets are here with them,” says Stephanie Harville, the facility’s Executive Director.

20

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Though residents are expected to provide basic care for their pets, staff members often support residents with tasks like taking a dog to a grooming appointment or changing a cat’s litter box. “We are all on board when it comes to helping with pets,” she notes. “Our staff works closely with families.” For Stephanie, one story in particular illustrates the passion Morningside staff members have for residents and their pets. Mr. Gentry, and his dog, Festus, moved into an assisted living apartment. Festus started having health problems and was eventually diagnosed with diabetes. “Our incredible nursing staff stepped in and created a medication administration record for Festus,” recalls Stephanie. “When the nurses went in to care for Mr. Gentry, they gave Festus his insulin shot. That says it all about our mentality here.” Occasionally, a pet-related challenge will arise but the Morningside staff almost always find a positive way to respond, Stephanie notes. Not long ago, a husband and wife moved in with their dog and cat. Family members had reservations about both animals coexisting peacefully. The couple decided that the cat needed to go, much to the chagrin of the husband who had loved the cat for years. The enterprising Morningside staff found a solution. “He’s a facility cat now,” Stephanie laughs. “He divides his time between my office, the TV lounge, and the library. Sometimes he even attends our staff meetings. Pristine Pup

Ever heard of an organic dog grooming salon? There’s one right here in Gallatin. Located at 154 North Water Street, three doors north of the historic Palace Theater, Pristine Pup is the brainchild of Katrina Lamb, an experienced dog groomer who owned a grooming salon in Indiana. After moving to Tennessee in 2010, Katrina worked as a groomer for a local veterinarian for nearly four years before making the decision to strike out on her own. The clever name was the byproduct of a brainstorming session with her daughter. “We were trying to think of a name for the business,” remembers Katrina. “She asked me what I wanted clients to walk out of my shop with, and I said that I wanted my pups to be pristine.” Pristine Pup offers full-service, allnatural dog grooming services along with short-term boarding, bathing, and nail trimming. “There's a need for

a natural approach,” says Katrina. “We take it slow and gentle, working diligently to earn the animal's trust.”

Diana Townsend, owner of A Safe Place for Animals, gets a puppy kiss from William, a hound dog she rescued after it was dropped at her shelter.

Katrina avoids the use of chemicals or sedatives. Dogs are not muzzled or restrained unless it’s necessary for safety reasons. “Smaller animals and those coming to us from shelter situations are afraid of grooming,” says Katrina. “My theory is that if you have a fearful animal that you're then putting on medications, you end up with a fearful, medicated animal. It only makes the grooming more difficult for the animal and for the groomer.” The Pristine Pup approach results in more cooperative pets who come to enjoy the grooming process. “We make them pretty and we make them smell better,” adds Katrina. “Pets love coming to see us.” For more information, call (615) 530-7877 or visit facebook.com/pristinepup.

A Safe Place for Animals What motivates a person to start an animal rescue? For Diana Townsend, it was all about giving vulnerable pets more options. Diana launched A Safe Place for Animals, a non-profit 501(c)3 alternative, in 2008. “We are a rescue-first shelter,” says Diana. “Since we don't receive city or county funding, we rely on an affordable veterinary clinic and pet grooming service to generate operating revenue. The company’s four employees include a full-time veterinarian and three kennel attendants who care for animals. “We average about 120 - 130 dogs and cats in the shelter at any one time,” notes Diana. “Some are strays, some are surrendered by their owners, and some come from Sumner County Animal Control. Some are even left on our porch.” Last year, after nearly a decade of renting space, A Safe Place for Animals moved into its own building, thanks to a generous donation by a local resident. The operation, now located at 905 Mallard Drive, is the largest non-profit animal rescue in Sumner County. “We have rescued more than 7,000 animals since we opened our doors,” adds Diana. Animal lovers who want to donate their time will find plenty of opportunities at A Safe Place for Animals. “We love volunteers,” says Diana. “We’re open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We need people who can help clean kennels, assist with fundraising, write notes to donors, and work on the computer.” To learn more about A Safe Place for Animals or to volunteer, call (615) 451-7342 or visit www.safeplaceforanimals. com. §

And Now for a Word from Ollie My name is Ollie. I'm a white boxer. I used to live at the Middle Tennessee Boxer Rescue facility. I was afraid I'd never find a forever home. But all that changed one day. When Richard and Elizabeth Suter came to meet me, I hoped and prayed that they would choose me. And they did! Actually, I chose them, they just didn't know it at the time. The first time they took me to the Gallatin Dog Park, I thought I was dreaming. I’d never had so much fun. They take such good care of me and love me so much. I feel like the luckiest dog in the world! [Ollie is the forever-companion of Richard and Elizabeth Suter of Gallatin.]

MEET

TOBY What does it take for an eight year-old boxer to become the face of a business? A little luck and great timing, says Jeff Derryberry, owner of Gallatin-based Derryberry Heat and Air. “Six months after losing our family dog, we were in Pulaski at a Wal-Mart,” says Derryberry. "We walked out of the store and someone in the parking lot was giving away boxer puppies. We decided to take one and we named him Toby. It was the right place and the right time for everyone involved. Toby’s spokes-pooch career started as a fluke. While participating in a local business networking group, Derryberry met a photographer who suggested that pictures of Toby might be a fun enhancement for the firm’s marketing material. The owner of a sign company, also in the group, got involved. “One thing led to another and soon Toby’s picture was on a vehicle wrap and on signs,” says Derryberry, noting that Toby has been featured in two television commercials and countless ad campaigns. “Next thing you know the whole Toby thing blows up and it's bigger than we are.”

Toby’s official headshot

How does Gallatin’s most famous pup get motivated to hit his marks? "Toby responds really well to treats," says Nick Brosche, Derryberry's Marketing Manager. “For example, we needed Toby to bark in one of the shots for a recent commercial. A little beef jerky did the trick.” Has success gone to Toby's head? “Toby is the exact same dog he's always been,” claims Derryberry. “He’s grounded, and he’s really good with kids and people in general. In fact, if you come into the shop you’ll see him. Kids love to pet him. When we have a presence at events, Toby’s who the people want to see.” §

Toby Speaks Want a glimpse at the real Toby? The editor of Gallatin City Guide took a few minutes to chat with Gallatin’s most famous canine. Gallatin City Guide (GCG): Yours is a real rags-toriches story. How do you feel about it? Toby: Who knew that I’d start out in a parking lot and end up being on billboards? I just didn’t see it coming. GCG: What’s the hardest thing about being the face of Derryberry Heat and Air? Toby: Responding to all the letters and emails I get. GCG: Do you have any special requirements when you’re on set? Toby: No teriyaki beef jerky.

GALLATIN

Means Business Governor Haslam Kicks of Tennessee’s Manufacturing Week in Gallatin.

True Success. Amazing Opportunities. That’s the short story on economic development in Gallatin over the last year. However, the long story is rich in details.

E

xisting industry grows. New industry moves to Gallatin. The national Business View Magazine does an 8-page spread on Gallatin’s success. Reader’s Digest names Gallatin as the Nicest Place in America. The city wins numerous national awards for its brand print and logo. New commercial development is coming out of the ground, creating exciting prospects for shopping and dining. New apartments and single-family homes are being built all over the city. There is so much economic activity that it is hard to know where to begin.

24

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

“A couple of years ago when my board wanted to find an item to give prospective businesses – an item that signified Gallatin – I asked 25 people what that item should be and I got 25 different answers,” said James Fenton, Executive Director of the Gallatin Economic Development Agency. “I also asked numerous successful business leaders outside of Gallatin what they thought about our city. They told me they didn’t really know much about Gallatin and thought it was far away from Nashville.” Fenton said this lack of identity was not a crisis but a perfect scenario. “People didn’t think anything bad about us – they just didn’t know us,” Fenton explained. The city then launched a year of research to determine the honest, compelling

story that would sell Gallatin to outsiders but ring true with people who live and work here. Surveys and interviews with hundreds of people generated pages of data the city is now using to both improve its image and underline its assets. As a byproduct, the city now has a logo – something it has never had before. A community committee selected the city’s new logo that pays homage to the miles of shoreline and the surrounding expanse of hills and pastures. The logo includes the line, “True Grit. Amazing Grace.” This phrase speaks to the hard work and determination of the community, as well as its welcoming nature. The phrase can also be adapted to fit the various city departments as well as various community partners.

Business

Economic Development has chosen the adaptation of “True Success. Amazing Opportunities.” Here’s why: Gallatin is the employment hub of the region. In the last few years, Gallatin has announced 3,500 new primary jobs. Nearly 18,000 people drive into Gallatin for work every day with only 10,000 leaving the city each day, bound for jobs elsewhere. Gallatin’s population is booming – up nearly 50% in just 15 years. In 2000, the population count was 23,230. At the end of 2015, it was 34,473. If the trend continues, it will surpass 40,000 in 2020. There are four Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology within a 30-minute driving distance. Welch College has opened its new residential campus in Gallatin. In addition, Volunteer State Community College – ranked in the top 18% of community colleges in the nation – has launched a mechatronics degree. All these programs support the skills training necessary for today’s manufacturing workforce. The city and state have invested millions of dollars in road infrastructure – widening Airport Road to three lanes and widening 109 South from Airport Road to the new bridge with construction expected to begin in the next year for five lanes all the way to I-40. The extension of Albert Gallatin Avenue to SR 109 North may begin construction in 2018. All these factors – steady population growth, investment in infrastructure, steady housing growth, new commercial development, and a cohesive message about quality of place - combine to make Gallatin a prime location for continued new primary jobs and overall strong economic development. Axem Distributing, which wholesales and manufactures firearms parts, moved its corporate headquarters and plant to Gallatin from California and Kentucky. Bennett Tool & Die moved its entire operation from Nashville to Gallatin. Western Reflections expanded its plant in Gallatin and added new

Natives Return

NATIVE BY CHANCE,

Choice

Scenic Old Hickory Lake, a year-round magnet for water lovers, is the perfect setting for a sunset boat cruise.

Some people view their home town as a refuge and happily live out their years there. Others can’t wait to get away. What’s it like to grow up in Gallatin, move away, and then return home? Three natives explain.

Paige Brown

If you’ve lived in Gallatin for any length of time, you’ve heard of Paige Brown, our city’s mayor. What you may not know is that this ninth generation Gallatin resident wasn’t always thrilled about her hometown. “When I was growing up, I could see that there were no good career opportunities here unless you had a family business,” remembers Paige. “I couldn’t wait to get away. I wanted to make money and see the world.” And she did. After graduating early from Gallatin High School, Paige took her scholarships and headed south to Florida State University where she studied broadcast communications and dreamed of a career in TV news. She hosted Florida State’s weekly television show and joined the school’s collegiate circus, where she learned and performed aerial acts. Completing her degree in three years, Paige set out in pursuit of that broadcast news career, reporting and anchoring at TV stations in Tallahassee and Panama City. A few years later, encouraged by family members, Paige returned to Middle Tennessee to work for a production company that created shows for the Nashville Network. “I did so many fun jobs there, including the show Top Card and live spots for the show Nashville Now. What I loved most, though, was traveling across the country doing feature stories about people and places,” says Paige. “It was great fun.” A few years later, she took advantage of an opportunity to work for Nashville’s Newschannel 5 where she produced the popular Talk of the Town show and several other special projects. She spent eleven years at the station, eventually becoming executive producer. During that time, Paige lived close to—but not inside—Gallatin’s city limits. The final nudge came in April 2006. “I was producing Channel 5’s coverage of the tornado that devastated so many homes and businesses in the Gallatin area,” she remembers. “It was then that I realized that I didn’t want to work in television anymore. I just wanted to be home.”

28

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

"It took my leaving to really see what great texture and wonderful character our city has. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be."

A few job applications later, Paige was tapped to lead the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce. Eight years later, voters chose her to serve as the city’s mayor. What does Paige have to say to young people thinking of leaving Gallatin? “If you want to explore other places, do it,” she advises. “If I hadn’t left, I wouldn’t have developed the deep appreciation I have for our community. The Gallatin I left behind all those years ago is vastly different than the Gallatin of today. There are really good jobs here and our quality of life is beyond compare. It took my leaving to really see what great texture and wonderful character our city has. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”

Jim Hawkins

Why does a person return to his hometown? Attorney Jim Hawkins is a good person to ask. Jim graduated from Gallatin High School, where he earned the Eagle Scout rank and served as drum major for the marching band. Leaving home and working his way through college, Jim graduated from Centre College in Kentucky, where he majored in government and earned his high school teacher certification. He went on to earn a master of science degree in educational policy studies from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and then received his law degree at Duke University. After law school, Jim clerked for the Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court and lived in Nashville. He returned to Gallatin, practiced law, taught Sunday school, and bought a small farmhouse in Sideview, just outside of Gallatin. After three years, Jim joined BellSouth as an in-house counsel. He also got engaged to Betsy Rogers from Chattanooga, whom he had known ever since their families grew up hiking together on Mt. LeConte in the Smokies. Jim was tapped for various in-house legal jobs and business unit leader assignments at BellSouth, which meant frequent transfers. “I had eight different jobs in 14 years because I accepted challenging assignments and we were willing to relocate,” he remembers. “It was ‘a multi-time-zone’ existence.” Jim’s promotions took the family to Birmingham, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and then back to Birmingham. The terrorist attack in New York on 9/11 was a turning point. “It was a recalibration moment in many ways,” Jim remembers. “Betsy and I sat down and talked about the choices we were making. Where did we really want to live? Where did we want to raise our family? I was away from home more than half the time and our three kids were growing up without me. I was missing so much.” They came home to Tennessee. Jim accepted work in Gallatin that allowed for a more balanced existence. He spent six years as Managing Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, and then launched a general practice law office on Gallatin’s historic square in 2008. Jim became deeply involved in his children’s lives and has served

on the boards and committees of Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scout Troop 407, Children Are People, Gallatin Rotary Club, and Sumner County’s Adult Education Program. “It took moving away and coming back to Gallatin for me to truly appreciate how many wise, caring, and connected people we have in our community,” Jim said. “I grew up with many of the people I interact with today, and it has been wonderful to get to know them as adults.” Jim’s volunteer work with his children’s public schools and his deep respect for educators and school staff members propelled him to a successful run for the Sumner County School Board. “I believe that stronger schools make for a stronger local community,” says Jim. “It means a lot to me to get to know the hearts of folks throughout Sumner County's communities, to listen to them, and to work with them on things that matter.” Jim adds, “We're called to love and treasure our neighbors, and that means showing God's love for us through our love for others. That's how I want to live my life.”

Natives Return

Dr. John Rippy Sometimes the road home is long and winding. Dr. John Rippy knows. He trekked through the mountains of Wyoming and the rolling hills of south central Pennsylvania before finding his way back to Gallatin. After graduation from Gallatin High School in 1997, John attended the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga. During summer breaks, he lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and earned money guiding raft trips on the Snake River in the Grand Tetons National Park. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in economics and moved to Breckenridge, Colorado to work in a job auditing the financial records of ski resorts. “I got tired of that real fast,” John remembers, “so after one year I resigned and drove back to Gallatin without a plan.” It was 2002. Knowing he wanted to pursue another career path, John considered his options. When his father, Dr. B.J. Rippy, suggested John consider dentistry, it sounded like a good plan. Dr. B.J. Rippy had launched Rippy Family Dentistry 30 years earlier and John had helped with administrative tasks throughout high school. Dentistry was practically the family business. When dad retired, son would take over the practice. John began the journey to dental school at Volunteer State Community College where he completed prerequisite courses. After finishing the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the University of Tennessee’s Health Science Center in Memphis, John intended to return to Gallatin. There was just one problem. His father wasn’t quite ready to retire. “My wife was from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, a small town near Gettysburg, so we moved there,” says John, who found work as a dentist in a Federally Qualified Health Center that provided comprehensive care to underserved and uninsured patients.

“I dragged my wife away from her hometown to come back to mine,” he says. “It was a big change for her... Now, she loves it here so much there’s no going back.”

After three years in Pennsylvania, John and his wife were considering the possibility of settling in Chambersburg. “I was on the verge of buying a dental practice when Dad finally called and said he was ready to retire,” remembers John. So, in 2013, John returned to Gallatin. “I dragged my wife away from her hometown to come back to mine,” he says. “It was a big change for her. At first, I wasn’t sure she would be willing to stay. Now, she loves it here so much there’s no going back.” What's it like to come back to your hometown? “It's exciting running into people I grew up with,” he says. “Everyone knows who I am and that’s nice. You come back and then you realize that this is where you're supposed to be.” §

SUMNER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER:

Ahead of the Curve

At Sumner Regional Medical Center (SRMC), the leadership team and staff are continuously exploring ways to advance the hospital’s mission of making the communities of Sumner County and the surrounding areas healthier. SRMC leadership team hosts the grand opening of the hospital’s new helipad.

A

s SRMC the hospital continues to live out its vision of creating a place where people choose to come for healthcare, where physicians want to practice, and where employees want to work, Sumner Regional’s more than 50-year legacy of caring for Gallatin and the surrounding communities is stronger than ever. Inviting the best physicians into northern middle Tennessee and supporting them is one of the most important drivers of the hospital’s ability to offer the best possible healthcare to the communities it serves. During the past year, SRMC added more than 30 new physicians in a number of service lines, including radiology, internal medicine, gastroenterology, neurology and tele-neurology, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery. And while delivering high quality patient care close to home is the single most important contribution made by SRMC, there are many other ways the hospital makes a positive impact in the Sumner County community and beyond. In creating excellent workplaces for its 1,300 employees, the hospital made $13 million in capital improvements in 2016, including opening Gallatin’s first free-standing Emergency Room at Sumner Station, opening the new Carpenter Cancer Center at Sumner Station, completing a renovation of the hospital’s endoscopy lab and the construction of a second cardiac catheterization lab, adding a new helipad for emergency transport, and managing and distributing an annual payroll of nearly $60 million. Sumner Regional Medical Center is proud to take a leadership role in Gallatin and the surrounding communities and is

committed to delivering needed healthcare to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. In fact, in 2016 SRMC donated more than $5.28 million in healthcare services to those in need. SRMC was also proud to partner with and support a number of organizations that provide greatly needed services and education to residents. In 2016, the hospital provided more than $65,000 to support programs. The hospital is also committed to ensuring fiscal responsibility – both at the hospital and in the community. In 2016, SRMC paid a total of $2.3 million in taxes and provided numerous sponsorships and donations to local organizations. SRMC is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is governed by a local board of trustees. The hospital is also one of the largest non-government employers in Sumner County. SALVUS CENTER:

Extending a Hand to the Working Uninsured “I have a job but no health insurance.” That’s the reality for a growing number of Sumner County residents. As the debate over federally-mandated health insurance rages, Salvus Center is quietly and diligently executing its Biblically based mission to care for those who are sick and in need. Located in Gallatin, Salvus Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a Safety Net Clinic that provides healthcare to working individuals whose employers don’t offer health coverage. The clinic provides primary health and dental care, diagnostic services, disease prevention, prescription assistance, and preventive services. Fees are based on a sliding scale.

34

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

For Salvus Center President/ CEO Jennifer Flanagan, the clinic meets an important need. “There are so many people in Sumner County who aren’t covered by an employer’s group insurance plan,” says Flanagan. “Some are self-employed. Others are in their 90-day waiting period for health benefits from an employer. Still others are working jobs where benefits aren’t offered. And some will never be insured. We’re here to bridge the gap.” The Salvus Center Medical office is located at 556 Hartsville Pike #200 in Gallatin. The Dental Center is located at 1005 Union School Road in Gallatin. There’s something about a Gallatin address that is very attractive for business owners. Just ask Lisa Grissim, FNP, owner and founder of Profiles Laser and Medical Aesthetics, which relocated to Gallatin last year. “Gallatin is growing and we love the city’s sense of community,” says Grissim, whose thriving medical aesthetics practice had already outgrown two locations in Hendersonville. “The building we purchased is a perfect balance of homey and professional. Our clients love it.” Launched in 2007, Profiles Laser and Medical Aesthetics provides expertise in non-surgical solutions to aging. “We have an outstanding team of experienced and highly-trained professionals with a passion for understanding each client’s unique needs,” states Grissim, whose staff has 20 years of experience providing Botox and dermal fillers, and 40 years of experience in aesthetics, laser, and skin care services. Profiles also has the distinction of being the only local firm that has achieved National Diamond Level status with Allergan. “Only 3 percent of the companies offering Allergan products achieve this status.” Profiles Laser and Medical Aesthetics helps clients deal with

When a business decides to change its name, it’s a big deal. Just ask Patrick Johnson. Co-owner of the Chris Grinstead Agency for the last six years, Johnson purchased his business partner’s share of the Gallatin-based insurance firm in late 2017 and unveiled a new name on December 1, 2017. Now known as Allstate Johnson Family Agency, Johnson’s firm gives Gallatin residents easy access to Allstate’s comprehensive line of home, auto, and other insurance products.

more than the external effects of aging. “We're not just a med spa anymore, though we definitely started that way,” notes Grissim. “Not long after I launched the business, I could see that we weren't serving our patients if we didn't help them address aging from the inside out. I became a nurse practitioner so I could prescribe bio-identical hormone therapy and offer other services that address the root cause of aging-related issues.” As part of their holistic anti-aging service menu, Profiles Laser and Medical Aesthetics has added new capabilities including IV infusion therapy that boosts the immune system and increases energy, and a program that addresses cardiovascular disease from the point of inflammation. “We’re incredibly excited about The Bale Doneen Method,” Grissim adds. “We test for advanced inflammatory markers, genetics, and then develop a program with patients that ensures that they won’t have a heart attack or stroke. It’s a revolutionary new approach.” Profiles Laser and Medical Aesthetics is located at 1184 Nashville Pike. For more information, call (888) 343-0878 or visit profileslaser.com. §

In an industry where everyone claims to have the best service, Allstate Johnson Family Agency takes the notion to a higher level. Each client is like a member of the family. Staff members give their personal cell phone numbers to clients. The firm’s Good Neighbor Program offers added protection. “When we work with anyone who lives within about a 20-mile radius of Gallatin, we don’t just go to their home to meet them, we stop by to meet their neighbors, too,” says Johnson. “That way, if a problem happens on client’s property when they’re away, the neighbor can call us.” Community involvement is a core value for everyone at Allstate Johnson Family Agency. “Our primary success metric is community engagement,” notes Johnson. “That’s why we’re involved in a number of organizations including the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce and Sumner County Anti-Drug Coalition. We consider ourselves Gallatin’s biggest cheerleaders.” Johnson loves doing business from a Gallatin address. “I call our city a little big town,” he laughs. “Gallatin is small enough that you can know everyone and large enough to allow lots of businesses to thrive. It’s a family-oriented place where you can feel connected, not a corporate town where you don’t know your neighbors.” Allstate Johnson Family Agency is located at 612 Hartsville Pike across from Sumner Regional Medical Center. EDUCATION:

The Key to a Bright Future Dr. Del Phillips, Sumner County Director of Schools

A Gallatin address puts you close to top-notch educational facilities, including a highly-ranked public school district, prestigious private academies, and universities where students can complete bachelor’s degrees and beyond. Gallatin-area educational institutions are equipped to help every member of the family achieve their educational goals.

Sumner County Schools Keeping Pace How are Sumner County Schools staying ahead of Gallatin’s rapid growth? Dr. Del Phillips, Superintendent of Sumner County Schools, shares a few highlights. Jack Anderson Elementary Classroom Addition: Completed in August 2017, this project added new classroom space to accommodate the growing number of students and redirected drop off/pick-up traffic to the back of the building. The additional queuing space created by this project is a welcome relief to motorists caught in long lines on and around Shutes Lane. Guild Elementary Classroom and Cafeteria Addition: The addition of a new wing will add much-needed classroom space along with a new, larger cafeteria that will make lunchtime much easier for students. Improvements to the driveway and traffic patterns include moving the student drop-off/pick-up location to the back of the building. Expected completion: December 2018. Station Camp Middle School Classroom and Parking Addition: This project includes a 12-classroom addition and more parking for the elementary and middle schools to alleviate congestion during special events. Expected completion: Early 2018.

Sumner County Leadership Academy How do you create a great school system? You start by growing strong leaders. That’s why the Sumner County Leadership Academy was created. It all started with a casual conversation between Benny Bills, a long-time Sumner County school administrator, and Charles Lea, then-Executive Director of Union University in Hendersonville. “A few conversations later, Associate Professor Mike Shackleford entered the mix and the rest is history,” says Renee Dauer, Union University’s Campus Director and chair of the school’s Adult and Professional Studies program.

Renee Dauer, Union University Campus Director/Chair of Adult and Professional Studies Program

Designed as a partnership between Sumner County Schools and Union University, the Sumner County Leadership Academy was created to give aspiring school leaders the tools needed to not only be a leader but lead in strategic ways and transform schools. Participants listen to guest speakers from schools and universities throughout Tennessee, work on leadership projects, enjoy networking opportunities, and engage in deep conversations that tend to alter perspectives. “We help teachers approach the educational process like entrepreneurs,” says Mike Shackleford, who directs the program. “The goal is to break the norm of what happens in schools and expose participants to unique experiences and ideas.” The program is intense. Participants meet in the summer for three days and in the fall for two. Extensive pre-work is required and a leadership project is part of the fall curriculum. Participants receive three hours of graduate credit if they enroll in Union University for an advanced degree. Teachers pay nothing to participate; the program is privately funded by local companies and education-minded community groups like the Hendersonville Chamber Foundation and Wilson Bank and Trust. Since its launch in 2012, 145 educators and administrators have completed the program’s demanding curriculum. Participant groups vary. Some are comprised of teachers who aspire to administrative roles like principal and assistant principal in the Sumner County school district. Other groups are made up of administrators and teacher leaders who want to hone skills that will make them more effective in their current roles. “The goal is for every-one to come together, share experiences, and be pushed to think differently whether they become a school leader or not,” says Dauer. Getting in isn’t easy. “It's a competitive process and there are always more applicants than spots,” says Shackleford. (continued)

Welch College: Making a Difference The opening of Welch College last year makes Gallatin a member of a very exclusive club. Just 5 percent of Tennessee cities have a residential college campus within their city limits. Since 1942, Welch College has fulfilled its mission to educate leaders to serve Christ, His Church, and His world through Biblical thought and life. It continues that mission today at its new state-of-the-art campus in Gallatin. Welch offers 40 majors with its top programs including theological studies, pre-med/ nursing, business, teacher education and music. Approximately 400 students are enrolled annually from nearly two dozen states and several foreign countries. The new Welch campus is located north of Station Camp High School between Bison Trail and the Stone Creek subdivision. Buildings housing the school’s administrative offices, classrooms, science labs, library, dormitories, a gymnasium, and a student center were completed in 2017. A Fine Arts building which houses a multi-purpose auditorium, the music department, and dining facilities opened in fall 2017. “This $30 million investment makes Welch one of just two postsecondary institutions with a main campus in Sumner County— and the county’s only residential college,” said Dr. Charles Lea, Professor of Educational Leadership and Special Assistant to the President for Adult Education. “As we look to the future, we want to provide more programs that have a direct impact on Gallatin and the surrounding area.” They’re already off to a good start with several new programs and partnerships in the works. A nursing education collaborative launching this year will enable students to attend Welch for their first two years, then go on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at a partner university while continuing to live on the Welch campus. The schools’ community service requirement means an influx of nursing students will be volunteering in area healthcare and long-term care facilities. “Our students give more than 10,000 hours of community service each year,” says Dr. Lea. “This helps students develop a strong bond to the community.” In a dual enrollment program piloting this year, students at Station Camp High School can walk across the street and take college courses at Welch. Officials are working on developing similar dual enrollment programs with other high schools in the area. 42

Education Welch, nationally known for top-ranked associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs, is also expanding its menu of graduate degree programs. Students can now earn a master’s degree in ministry and theology, and a master’s degree in education will be developed during the 2017-18 academic year. “Our goal is to create unique opportunities in education instead of mirroring what's already being offered,” says Dr. Lea. Welch is also a key player in Tennessee Reconnect, a statewide initiative to help adults enter higher education to gain new skills, advance in the workplace, and fulfill lifelong dreams of completing a degree or credential. “We offer many programs for students taking advantage of Tennessee Reconnect scholarships,” notes Dr. Lea. The school’s Enriched Adult Studies Program offers degrees in education, business, and ministry. Business students can focus their studies in highdemand fields such as manufacturing, supply chain logistics, and healthcare management. Students interested in ministry careers can participate in a unique certificate program taught entirely in Spanish. As Gallatin grows, Welch will grow along with it. “We are very excited to be up and running on our new Gallatin campus,” adds Dr. Lea, “We view these programs as a way to support the community that has extended such a warm welcome to us.”

Runners pull out all the stops to dress for the annual Gallatin Shamrock Run, which raises money for Gallatin Chamber Foundation

Business Supporting Education The Gallatin Chamber Foundation is the Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce’s 501(c)3 component that exists to fund innovative education programs in Gallatin schools. The Gallatin Chamber Foundation School Improvement Awards are awarded each fall to Gallatin K-12 public school teachers to use for special projects in their classrooms. The Gallatin Chamber Foundation sponsors the Gallatin Shamrock Run each year. All proceeds from this event are used to help fund the awards. In 2014, the Foundation’s inaugural year, more than $5,000 was raised. Since then, contributions have soared, with more than $20,000 raised in 2017. §

SMALL BUSINESS

BIG IMPACT Behind every small business is a story of inspiration, grit, and persistence. What motivations and circumstances drove the leaders of four successful Gallatin-based small businesses to launch their enterprises? Gallatin City Guide investigates.

Startup Gallatin Gallatin residents with bright business ideas now have a way to bring their dreams to life. It’s called Startup Gallatin and it’s a 10week training program that equips aspiring entrepreneurs with the insights, relationships, and tools needed to turn business ideas into action and turn a passion into a sustainable and thriving business. The first forum will debut in early 2018 with additional forums planned for later in the year. Participants in each Startup Gallatin will complete a ten-week training program, meeting for three hours each week at Gallatin’s business incubator located at 106 Public Square in Historic Downtown. The program wraps up with a funding pitch session when entrepreneurs present their business plans to a panel of public and private investors for a chance to win a cash award of up to $3,500.

Clay Haynes is hosting the 10-week Startup Gallatin program at 106 Public Square. To learn more or to apply for an upcoming Startup Gallatin, visit www.startupgallatin.com.

Program organizers have licensed the training materials from a Chattanooga-based firm called Co.Starters that focuses exclusively on the startup and growth of lifestyle small businesses. The program is currently in use in more than 55 cities across the U.S. “We chose Co.Starters because they have a demonstrated track record of success helping individuals seed and grow their business,” said K. Clay Haynes, the Gallatinarea developer coordinating the launch of Startup Gallatin. “After two years, 87 percent of the businesses launched using the Co.Starters program are still in operation, averaging almost $250,000 in annual revenue and employing between two and five employees. That’s an impressive success rate.”

According to Haynes, entrepreneurs must meet three basic qualifications to participate: 1. Have a business idea that they would like to grow in Gallatin. 2. Be willing to share their idea with a group of their peers to refine the concept. 3. Commit to the full 10-week program.

Absolute Business Solutions If you’re looking to start a business, experts tell you to look for a problem to solve. That’s what Rene’ Vander Wielen and Michael Weber did. In 2014, the mother-in-law/son-in-law combo started making plans to relieve headaches for the owners of small businesses.

Both had worked with small businesses throughout their careers, “Many small business owners and both were familiar with the most common pain points business don’t have the time to give owners faced. “Technology, finances, accounting and IT the attention and accounting are an ongoing they need. CenterStage Performing Arts Academy Six forward-thinking creative entrepreneurs had a dream: to create a place where talent could be nurtured and children could get experience performing without having to make the trek to Nashville. That dream became a reality in 2015 when they purchased CenterStage Performing Arts Academy in Gallatin.

The business partners—Kayla Witty, Natalie Klein Hudson, David Klein, Laurie Klein, Nathan Schneider, and Daniel Hudson—quickly went to work. What started as a dance studio with about 80 students was transformed as the new owners boosted the school’s offerings. “We added a music program and a theater program and grew our student base to about 150,” says Kayla Witty, Director of Education. “The music program, directed by Nathan Schneider, features two choirs and private lessons for voice and several instruments, and the theater program produces musical variety shows and acting shows.” The new owners have spared no expense to make their dream a reality. Led by David Klein, Director of Operations, and Daniel Hudson, Chief Financial Officer, the team gutted the 10,000-sq.-ft. building in 2016 and completely reconfigured the space. “We went from two dance studios to five, added four private lesson rooms, created a huge lobby, and renovated the bathrooms,” says Natalie Klein Hudson, Director of Performance. They also added a massive state-of-the-art performance hall complete with professional lighting, a sound system, and chandeliers. “We did it so we can host our own shows,” says Natalie. “We’d always had trouble finding a venue in Gallatin large enough for the kinds of shows we were doing. We had been doing them at the Palace Theater or going into Hendersonville. The parents of our students preferred to stay closer to home.” Even though they are entering their third year of business, CenterStage already has a claim to fame. A group of 13 dancers from CenterStage has been invited to represent Tennessee at Dance Excellence, an international dance festival held in Los Angeles in April 2018. The dancers will be taking master classes with dancers from Broadway and will have the opportunity to perform at Disneyland. “Just one studio from each state is

Scrub Squad What does it take to build an empire? Sara Elwess knows. This 30-year-old central Oregon native has built a thriving business creating order for families and businesses throughout the Gallatin area. It all started when Sara moved to Gallatin in 2015. Her aunt cleaned house for a handful of people and asked Sara to help her out. A few months later, when her aunt decided to leave the housecleaning business, Sara could hear opportunity knocking. After recruiting her cousin’s husband, Samuel Marksberry, to be her business partner, the business took off. It’s no surprise. Before launching her company, Sara spent 15 years in the cleaning business, mostly in management roles for small operators and franchisees of large, nationally known brands. She had cleaned it all: residential, commercial, moveins, move-outs, new construction, car detailing, and more. Over the years, Sara had paid close attention to the way her

“I knew that I could combine my cleaning industry know-how with Samuel’s business and IT background to create something totally different.” employers conducted business. “They were all making the same mistakes and creating unhappy clients,” says Sara. “I learned from every one of them.” Sara took this knowledge and set out to create an organization that would deliver a better experience for clients. “I knew that I could combine my cleaning industry know-how with Samuel’s business and IT background to create something totally different,” says Sara. Samuel Marksberry agrees. In addition to overseeing business operations, he serves as the chief evangelist for the business. “I make sure everyone has the tools they need to create the kind of experience we want our clients to have,” says Samuel, the company’s chief executive officer whose IT expertise is behind the company’s approach to business systems. “If a problem happens, I’m able to resolve it almost instantaneously. This is a big deal in the cleaning business.”

The company’s approach has created an enthusiastic group of clients who aren’t shy about recommending Scrub Squad to their family and friends. In less than two years, the company has tripled its client base. “We haven’t done any marketing,” admits Sara. “Our growth has been 100 percent word of mouth. We have clients in Gallatin, Hendersonville, Bethpage, and Cross Plains.” What’s the best part about running a business in Gallatin? For Sara, it’s the people and the flexibility that being a business owner offers. “I’m a single mom with four kids,” she says. “I can shape my work schedule around the needs of my life. That's huge.” For Samuel, it’s the city’s diversity and small-town feel. “I love the historic square,” says Samuel, “and the people in Gallatin are amazing.” Though their focus is currently on Sumner County, they hope to expand Scrub Squad into adjacent counties in the future. “Our plan is to leverage our existing business structure so we can serve people throughout Middle Tennessee,” says Samuel. “We’ve got a great service. We want to create something that puts Gallatin on the map.” For more information, contact Scrub Squad at (615) 947-5263. §

Moves & Expansions

Moves & Expansions Gallatin is booming! Just look around and you’ll see new construction all over the city. Gallatin City Guide profiles three local business owners whose roots in Gallatin are getting a little deeper.

Perkins Drug Adds Second Location

Hilton Garden Inn Comes to Gallatin

In early 2018, Perkins Drugs & Gift Shop, Gallatin’s longest continually-operated business and one of the city’s most beloved pharmacies, added a second location in the Fairvue area. For owner Andrew Finney, the move came after many years of planning. “We knew that we needed a presence on the west side of Gallatin because that’s where much of the city’s growth is happening,” Andrew says.

It’s full steam ahead for Hemel Surati. The Gallatin business owner and developer has cleared every hurdle in the journey to making the ambitious Bakers Crossing project a reality. The first shovel of dirt was turned in May 2017 and the initial phase of the project, which includes a Hilton Garden Inn and convention center, is expected to be complete by the end of 2018.

Finding the right location was a key factor. Finney wanted to be close to Nashville Pike and near growing developments like Fairvue and Kennesaw Farms. “Our research told us that people on the west side of Gallatin tend to drive into Hendersonville to shop,” Finney says. “There are eight different pharmacies between Perkins’ east-side pharmacy and the Green Lea Blvd. area. We have many loyal customers who come from the west side of Gallatin but a large number of residents do not because of convenience. We opened the new location because we wanted to make sure there's no geographic reason that people are not coming to our store.” Perkins Drugs anchors a multi-tenant building at 879 Green Lea Blvd. For more information, call (615) 452-6111 or visit perkinsdrugs.com.

Moves & Expansions

Developer Hemel Surati stands at the construction site of the Hilton Garden Inn. Expected to open by the end of 2018, the hotel will anchor the new Bakers Crossing development on Tulip Poplar Drive.

Though the start date for the project’s second phase is undetermined, plans include a boutique-style hotel with condos on upper floors and retail space on the street level. “We’re evaluating a number of different hotel brands,” says Surati. “A boutique hotel will be a great asset for the area.” Surati says his company plans to make Gallatin its home base for the hotel development arm of his family’s company, which is currently wrapping up 14 hotel projects in Pennsylvania. The Bakers Crossing project will be a model for more like it in other cities. “Everyone wants to be in ‘it’ cities like Nashville and that has sent real estate prices through the roof,” he says. “Our goal is to enter smaller markets where the cost of land is lower so we can spend most of our money on the actual development project. We will be the guys who do one or two projects per year with these projects being drivers for growth in every market we enter.” As a Gallatin businessman, Surati is used to working closely with local entrepreneurs and looks forward to the

opportunity to forge mutually beneficial partnerships. “We are totally open to joint ventures,” he notes. “If someone in town says he has a concept for a cool restaurant, we are willing to sit down and talk.”

Children’s Dentistry: New Location, New Name If you build it, they will come… Just ask Dr. Andy Reed. After just five years in business here in Gallatin, his pediatric dental practice will soon be expanding into a spacious new facility located at 1710 Nashville Pike in the Kennesaw Farms development on Gallatin’s southwest side. At the

same time, his practice, now known as Children’s Dentistry, will get a new name: Sumner Pediatric Dentistry. A lot has happened since Dr. Andy launched Children’s Dentistry of Gallatin in 2011. “I’m originally from the Nashville area and thought Gallatin might be a great place to settle, but honestly, I wasn’t 100 percent sure,” admits Dr. Andy. “I knew that our services could benefit Gallatin and Sumner County, but we wanted to test the market before making our commitment.” Dr. Andy initially cared for patients in both Gallatin and Clarksville before making the decision to establish permanent roots in Sumner County. He opened his own private practice at

and as the city’s only board-certified pediatric dental specialist, the practice has boomed. By their third year in business, Children’s Dentistry of Gallatin had already experienced growing pains at their 1,800 sq.ft. office and Dr. Andy began looking for the perfect site to build a stand-alone dental facility. “My wife and I took our time because we wanted to be strategic about choosing our final practice location,” he notes. “Most of Gallatin’s future growth will be on the city’s southwest side, and that’s where we wanted our practice to be.”

Since its launch, Children’s Dentistry of Gallatin has amassed an enthusiastic fan base and has been tapped as the best pediatric dentist in Sumner County several years in a row. For Dr. Andy, the staff’s skill level is their primary differentiator. “When you’re working with children and special needs patients, choosing a board-certified pediatric dentist can mean the difference between a child looking forward to their experience or absolutely dreading it,” says Dr. Andy. “We hope to make coming to the dentist fun for our patients, while giving them access to state-of-the-art care that promotes excellent oral health. We love our patient family and we love serving our community.”

Is Gallatin the Nicest Place in America?

(See page 26)

We think so—and we’re not alone. In late 2017, Gallatin was named Reader’s Digest’s Nicest Place in America. Local voters turned out in record numbers to cast ballots for their favorite city, catapulting Gallatin to top honors. The prize was a cover story in the November 2017 issue of Reader’s Digest magazine. Read the full story at https://www.rd.com/true-stories/ inspiring/nicest-places-gallatintennessee/.

Local Fact

CRAGFONT was the home of General James Winchester, a protagonist of the American Revolution, a pioneer in the Middle Tennessee wilderness, a soldier against indigenous Americans, a brigadier general in the War of 1812, and co-founder of the City of Memphis The construction of Cragfont was started in 1798 and finished in 1802. It was the finest mansion on the Tennessee frontier and typified the grandeur and style of the best architecture of the late Georgian period. Named Cragfont because it stood on a rocky bluff with a spring at its base, the house is furnished with Federal antiques, some of which are original to the Winchester family. The basement holds an authentic weaving room.

Thousands of people had their eyes on the sky at the Gallatin Eclipse Encounter at Triple Creek Park on August 21, 2017.

Total Solar Eclipse: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event It was the party to end all parties on Aug. 21, 2017 when a full solar eclipse swept across the U.S. from Salem, Ore., to Charleston, S.C. The center of totality ran through Gallatin’s Triple Creek Park where more than 20,000 visitors from as far away as Japan descended to view Middle Tennessee’s first total solar eclipse since 1478. Gallatin enjoyed the longest viewing length of totality with two minutes and 40 seconds of darkness. The last solar eclipse that took place in the continental U.S. was visible only in the Pacific North in 1979. Outside of 2017, the next visible one in 2024 will pass just north of Tennessee.

Interesting Fact About Gallatin The first horse race in Tennessee was in Gallatin in 1804. President Andrew Jackson and his wife Rachel were in attendance. Gallatin was the center for horse racing in America before a law outlawed it in Tennessee. Fox hunting and steeple chasing were extremely popular, drawing tourists from surrounding states and even overseas. Foxland Hall’s Laura Branham received the first Sportsman of the Year Award from the Kentucky Horse Breeders Association.

Are You Credit Invisible? If you’re a credit-worthy person without a credit report, you’re not alone, says Pam Ogden, founder and president of Gallatin-based Business Credit Reports, the world’s largest independent provider of business credit information. “There are 45 million credit-invisible people in the U.S. who pay their bills on time but don’t do the kinds of things that show up on a credit report,” Ogden notes. “When these credit-invisible people try to apply for a loan or other credit, they’re often turned down because there’s no credit report for the lender to access.” Fortunately, a company called eCredable is helping credit-invisibles establish credit by pulling 24 months of credit history from telecom, internet and utility providers to create a credit score some lenders use when processing applications for credit cards, personal loans, auto loans, and home loans. “If you’ve been turned down for credit because you don’t have a credit report, you need to know about this,” Ogden adds. “You can get a credit report in less than 24 hours.” For more information or to apply, visit www.ecredable.com. §

UMBRA COFFEE:

Born in the Shadow of the Eclipse The next time you’re on Gallatin’s historic square, if you notice a tantalizing coffee aroma, follow your nose into Umbra Coffee, one of the latest additions to the city’s foodie scene. You’ll find locallyroasted coffee, espresso-based beverages, and a limited selection of food to complement the brews. “We’re offering a cutting-edge coffee experience without the attitude typically associated with modern coffee establishments,” says owner Darren Reynolds, a Seattle native whose 15 years of experience in the coffee business includes stints owning and operating his own café in Washington State and managing Tin Cup Coffee’s roasting and retail operations in downtown Nashville. Umbra Coffee is a dream come true, and not just for the espresso purists elated to have a third-wave coffee shop inside the city limits. It’s an answer to prayer for anyone looking for a comfortable, centrally-located place to meet. Situated on the ground floor of the beautifully-renovated community co-working space at 106 Public Square, Umbra has a quiet ambiance that makes it the ideal gathering place. On any given day, you’re likely to find Bible study groups studying scripture, college students preparing for tests, local business owners meeting with clients, and families taking a breather after shopping. What’s in the name? According to Reynolds, a celestial event provided the inspiration. “A friend of mine told me that Gallatin was ground zero for the 2017 eclipse,” he says. “I did a little research and discovered the word “umbra,” which is the term for the shadow of a solar eclipse. Ultimately, Umbra Coffee was born in the shadow of the eclipse and derives its name from our city being the best spot to view the event in Tennessee, and, as I like to say, ‘If you’re in the Umbra, you’re in the right place at the right time.’” For more information, call (615) 461-0242 or visit umbracoffee.com. §

RightCare Wellness and Aesthetics

RightCare Wellness & Aesthetics is the next logical step for nurse practitioner Stephanie Urell, who launched RightCare Family Practice in 2014. “In 2016, after two years of tending to the needs of elderly patients in long-term care facilities in Gallatin and the surrounding areas, I opened an outpatient clinic,” says Urell. “Many of the people I met were interested in aesthetics services and I was encouraged to expand my practice in that direction.” In September 2017, RightCare Wellness & Aesthetics opened for business. Staffed with two nurse practitioners and a medical doctor, the clinic offers state-of-the-art laser systems that perfect the skin and erase years from the face and body, along with injectibles and other rejuvenation services. “Our training gives people a measure of confidence,” Urell notes. “We’ve invested many years to become experts in skin, body, anatomy, and holistic care.” When you visit RightCare Wellness & Aesthetics, expect to walk into a professional environment with caring people. “We may be medical professionals but we’re really down to earth,” adds Urell. “It’s easy to talk to us and share your concerns. It’s the kind of environment that sets the stage for great outcomes.” RightCare Wellness & Aesthetics is located at 323 Steam Plant Road in Gallatin. For more information, call (615) 989-7907 or visit rightcarewellness.com. §

5 Steps to Building Business Credit If you own a small business or hope to launch one someday, it’s important to build good credit. How do you do this? Pam Ogden, President/CEO of Gallatin-based Business Credit Reports, the world’s largest independent provider of business credit information, offers the following tips: 1. Establish your Business’ Identity. It’s helpful to form an LLC or corporation and establish an Employer Identification Number with the IRS. Then, open a bank account and establish a business phone line using the company’s identity. “Having an identity separate from that of the business owner not only protects the business owner from liability, it shows the world that the business is legitimate,” says Ogden. “Building a professional website with a unique domain and business email address is also very important.” 2. Know about Business Credit Bureaus. The three largest are Experian, Dun & Bradstreet, and Equifax. These credit bureaus build credit profiles on businesses when lenders and other credit issuers report the payment behavior of their credit customers to them. When companies pay 74

GALLATIN, TN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

their bills on time, this timely payment activity is reported to the credit bureaus. Likewise, when a company is late on its bills, that poor payment behavior is also reflected on the company’s credit record. Just as there are FICO Scores on consumers, each credit bureau has credit scores on businesses which are powered by the business’ credit profile. “Lenders, suppliers, and sometimes even customers use the company’s credit profile and scores to make credit decisions on the company,” notes Ogden. “Companies with good credit receive lower interest rates, higher credit limits, and better terms from suppliers and lenders than companies with poor credit.” 3. Build a Strong Credit Profile. According to Ogden, you can start by opening a few business credit card accounts. “Accounts for commercial gas cards, charge card accounts from big-box retailers, and regular business credit cards are usually reported to the business credit bureaus and are a terrific way to start building credit,” she notes. “Establish a credit line with suppliers and ask if they report their trade data to the credit bureaus. If they don’t, have them visit BusinessCreditReports.com. BCR can help

them report their trade data to all three big credit bureaus for free.” 4. Establish Creditworthiness. To get credit, you need to have credit. One option is DUNS File, offered by Dun & Bradstreet, which helps companies establish a D&B credit record and D-U-N-S Number in just a few days. eCredable is another company that helps budding businesses establish credit by pulling 24 months of credit history from telecom, internet, and utility providers and reporting that payment history to the credit bureaus so it appears on your business credit record. 5. Don’t Pay Late. Finally, the most important thing to do is to pay all bills on time. “It’s one thing to get a credit record in place, but if that credit record shows unreliable payment behavior, it won’t do your business any favors,” adds Ogden. “Suppliers and lenders will require lessfavorable terms and may not want to issue credit at all.” For more information, contact Business Credit Reports at (615) 989-7006 or businesscreditreports.com. §
