Artist Statement This is a three-dimensional installation and wall work made out of paper and glue. The pieces are initially read as a whole - a pulsating arrangement of regular shapes and volume then as an assemblage of individual components that make up the holistic sculpture, systems of patterns and motifs emerge from the collective. Painstakingly handcrafted piece-by-piece, I play with the compositional idea of void vs. solid in the careful presentation of work. While examining the impression of architectural density, the pieces maintain the delicate nature of the material at hand. The series of Reflection, which is one of collection in Louis Vuitton, is made of about 15000 pieces of mirrors and paper cubes on which various lines and signs are printed. Each mirror is neatly placed facing each other so that they create diffused reflection and give the viewers a visionary illusion. The viewers cannot recognize if they see the actual printed sign or a reflection in the mirror. This is my study of uncertainty of the way of seeing and ambiguity of recognition.

Artist Statement I am interested in architectural design and portable lifestyle, and work with Legos and Plexiglas. I chose Legos because they are associated with architectural forms. These ready-made objects are based on industrial and mechanical functions. I am fascinated with the fact that all kinds of Lego blocks can fit into each other whether they are old or new or from different places, and fit amazingly well together. In that sense, I think the idea of Legos’ function represents our contemporary global lifestyle. I am also interested in Legos as toys. Toys are childish and innocent, and they connect to nostalgia. Recently I have been focusing more on a fashion concept in art. Art and fashion have become very close to each other; they form a synergy. Art had a more privileged status in the past; but now art has become more popular, and thus has found increasing acceptance in venues inclined toward fashion and social networking. In the past, interaction with art was largely focused on the appreciation of the works. Now we also want to communicate with art rather than just look at it, to participate in the action and become part of it. Thinking about the relationship between collecting and shopping, I was wondering, where should the line be drawn between art and fashion? Is art for collecting and is fashion for shopping? Is art becoming an activity of creating fashion, for shopping? People try to express themselves through fashion. Instead of owning art for one’s own appreciation, many prefer to own it to show who they are. In my recent work, I created sculptures made of Lego, Plexiglas, and home-interior detail items like door-knobs, handles, etc. They all contain sculptural and architectural elements, but in the context of this new work, the result is fashionable handbags. Each of the handbags combines minimal art with architectural spaces. They have intimate space, but more importantly, they suggest something like accessories that one might want to carry for purposes of fashion self-identity, rather than merely keep at home for personal aesthetic interaction. The more art resembles fashion, the more the consumption of art resembles a more popular or practical consumerism.

Artist Statement I want to highlight my invariant through my transmuted artworks. James J. Gibson who was an American psychologist defined that invariant is constancy that show up by variegating something. Like the concept, I attempt to release attachment to the artworks and face them fully with being myself. As a results, my works change in such a way as to adapt to changing environments or conditions. However, I believe that there is something never changed and it is my invariant. In my early works, I depicted peaceful nature against white walls. On the surface, the combination of nature and the artificial objects, conjured an image of coexistence. Yet, I remained constantly aware of the fact that environmental destruction is a negative aspect of humanity. Thus, encountering the consequences of human’s self-centered tendencies in nature induced a deep, candid response from myself. After the devastating earthquake that hit Japan on March 11, 2011, my works changed. The event made me realize that the world does not consist of a linear timeline and there are huge differences between real experience and just seeing events; rather, it moves in complicated and violent ways, with each “now tied to causes and effects that happen all over the world. After I had this realization, my attention shifted to how express it. In latest works, I attempt to present the chaotic world such as the images of disasters that is mixed the analog world that I have actually seen and experienced, and the digital world that I earned images from TVs and computers. Reacting the reality that changes from moment to moment like creatures, I try to be faithful to now without regard to the pass and without anticipating the future. By this means, my works has changed naturally after my experience. Expressing my feeling and thinking flexibly, I can discover new things included in myself. I believe that I can know and tell my invariant by continuing to produce my artworks.

About GALLERY MoMo GALLERY MoMo was established in 2003 at Roppongi, Tokyo and has opened new space in 2008 at Ryogoku, Tokyo for the lager space. For a space of finding new young Japanese and international artists and curators, GALLERY MoMo at Roppongi has reopened as GALLERY MoMo Projects in 2013. Mainly, GALLERY MoMo represents Japanese artists who were born in 1970’s and 1980’s, capture their real mental situations and express the present days through their own style. The gallery believes the worlds the artists depicted have connections with global worlds. The mission of the gallery is to introduce the international artists who have unique concepts and original styles to Japan and the Japanese artists to other countries.
