Katsumi Hayakawa Lines September 3 (Sat.) - October 8 (Sat.), 2016 GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku
GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku is pleased to present the fifth solo exhibition of Katsumi Hayakawa titled Lines from September 7th through October 8th. In his early works, Hayakawa applies many layers with different paints and chips away at the layers with a power drill. In this manner, the artist succeeded to express perspective and neo-futuristic spaces. Since 2009, he has developed the active motif and the stereoscopic plane expression by making the perspective in his paper works. The works seem like that we look down at the urban constructions. This exhibition consists of his latest three-dimensional installations and wall works with paper and glue borrowed architectural elements. Looking down at the elements of Western modernism “dot, line, and surface” like Kandinsky and Mondrian used, we can also see influence of Japanese culture in the lines that used for describing rains and lattice doors in his Ukiyoe works by Hiroshige Utagawa, and in Japanese comic books such as drawing the expressive effects. According to the artist, he can’t help but be fascinated by the trite super retro visual language dot, line, and surface. In this exhibition, Hayakawa strengthens the simple and minimal composition by employing the idea of Adolf Loos in his essay Ornament and Crime. The concept of Loos dose not connect to his artworks visually, however, it might connect to his internal themes that are the similar issues Loos suggested in the book such as unequal society, poverty, and the conception of minimalist in the contemporary society. Katsumi Hayakawa was born in 1970 in Tochigi, Japan. After graduating from Nihon University in 1992, he went to the United States and received his M.A. from School of Visual Arts in 1998. Hayakawa has exhibited at Daniel Silverstein Gallery in New York, McClain Gallery in Huston, Nou Gallery in Taipei, Galeria YUSTO / GINER in Malaga and Micheko Gallery in Menschen. His works is held in the Museum of Malaga, LOUIS VUITTON Collection and some public collections.
