GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Tokuro Sakamoto titled Pattern. In this exhibition, he will show about twenty paintings describe the landscapes with dots and lines like pattern. Sakamoto depicts the landscapes on Japanese traditional paper based on the photographs that he takes. Removing redundant elements from the views, his representational paintings became abstract paintings. The scenes in his works have the commonality and give the viewers the feelings that they have seen before, even though Sakamoto painted the particular places. After experiencing his works, the viewers might feel déjà vu to the scenes described electronic cables, crosswalks, playgrounds, and natures. Sakamoto consciously attempts to interact with the viewers and connect the past to the present through his works. The paintings of Sakamoto are patterns like the Japanese traditional painting by Hehachiro Fukuda who painted water surface just by describing the ripples. His paintings, however, have a sign of life and reality from the depth of paintings. This is because the artist sees the daily activities of people who might be on the behind of the views and give their sign to the paintings. Sakamoto attempts to avoid the expression that enforced ego and keep his spiritual state nothingness like Zen. The description invites the viewers into the world of his works and provides the feeling of nostalgia by inspiring their memories and sympathy to his works. Tokuro Sakamoto lives and works in Yamanashi, Japan. He received a B.A. in Japanese Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts and studied Nihonga (Traditional Japanese Painting) at Hayami Institute of Arts. Combining acrylic paints and the traditional Japanese papers, Sakamoto successes to establish his won world in the paintings with the flat surface that is one of Japanese painting signatures. Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art owns his works in the permanent collections. This is his sixth solo exhibition in the gallery.
Artist Comment I feel that the landscapes I’ve seen in my daily life appear as paintings. On the other had, some times I feel the patterns around me look like abstract paintings. Whether natural or artificial, I’m interested in the repeated rhythm, the repetition, and the overlapping. My paintings are works to find small beauties in the nature forms accidentally shaped and the artificial forms shaped with lines and the rules. We already have the memories of various landscapes and paintings even before we encounter the new landscapes and the new paintings. I think many people see them while linking their countless memories. Always, I paint the world I know and exist around me. I attempt to express the point of views how we see the world. Trying to make an empty space in the center of my paintings, I create the paintings with the derivative points of views from the behind of the landscape I look at. Tokuro Sakamoto, 2016
