Recycle. Gallery recycles all its storage and packing materials, boxes and any old magazines that are returned. We don’t get that many fortunately. We love to know our readers hang on to previous copies but when you move or find that they’re taking up too much space, drop them down to the recycling bins in the car park off the Esplanade. If you want to find out more about recycling, call 01534 448586. We put this on the green strip to look eco innit... That’s smart!

hat a fantastic sun-run we’ve had so far. We’ve hit midsummers eve and are starting to cherish every minute of light we can set our beady little eyes on. There are those familiar sounds and smells in the air again. Strimmer and tractor engines firing up at strange hours, happy diners clinking glasses, watered gardens and the smell of fresh cut lawns and that unforgettable aroma of smokey BBQ meats! This month, Gallery Magazine focuses on all things BUILD. We challenge local architects to showcase their building skills and we interview construction specialists in our AGENDA review. Our exclusive test-drive this month is the brand new electric BMW i3 and we look at our developing relationship with the visiting Children of Chernobyl. Our talented style team show you how to build the perfect look for the summer and our Renegade Photographer shows off some of his sublime summer shots just for you. We have a super exclusive interview with Jamie Oliver’s main man and King of Catertainment - Christian Stevenson aka DJ BBQ! Keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page as lucky readers are going to get the chance to win a MEGA catertaining kit with our Weber BBQ giveaway and cooking gear – the perfect prize for all of your summer parties courtesy of those kind souls at B&Q! The Gallery Team continues to grow with the addition of two new members this month and I am proud to announce the arrival of Florence Eve Alford Chandler and Aoife-Marie Manning (pronounced Eefer just to clarify). Their impact on friends, family and deadlines is already immense and the Gallery Magazine team wish you the best health and happiness for the future! For best results, enjoy this issue of Gallery Magazine in the sun surrounded by good company! RON (uncle x 2)

Twenty-eight years after the disaster, there are more than 130 lifeline links with Chernobyl across Europe, including Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. The Guernsey branch of the Chernobyl Children Lifeline Link was set up on the island by Rod Brehaut and has been offering respite holidays to the children of Chernobyl for over 20 years. Each year, fourteen children from Chernobyl and the surrounding area are offered the opportunity to come on holiday to Guernsey for one month, which helps to build up their immune systems, savour various foods and receive eye tests and dental treatment (the latter normally undertaken without anaesthetic in Belarus) free of charge from Specsavers and Guernsey medical professionals. The children, aged between nine and ten, are nominated to come to Guernsey by their schoolteachers and are hosted in pairs by seven local families. During their stay, the children are able to learn more about Guernsey/British culture and have the opportunity to participate in a range of exciting activities that would not be available to them in Belarus. Candle making, trips to visit the Airport Fire Brigade, excursions to Herm and Sark and boating with the sea cadets are just some of the activities, which have been planned for the children during their time in Guernsey. On Sunday 15th June, Gallery Magazine was invited to meet with our friends from Chernobyl and their host families at a dip and dine party, generously arranged by the proprietors of the Perelle Bay Hotel, Gundega and Joao Freitas. When we arrived, the children were playing in the swimming pool – the majority having learned to swim earlier in the week thanks to swimming lessons provided by Beau Sejour, free of charge. It quickly became clear when observing the interaction between the children and their host families that a close bond has already been forged. Although an inevitable language barrier exists, both parties are able to communicate effectively using hand motions and sign language, occasionally using Google translate to learn new Russian and English words together. One of the words learned over the course of the first week by Dasha, a bubbly little girl aged 10, was ‘interview’ and she was BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

very keen to let her thoughts on her stay in Guernsey be known. Bouncing up and down on the spot with excitement and seemingly boundless energy, she explained in a mix of English and Russian (with the help of Gundega, who was on hand to act as interpreter) that she had been “swimming a lot in the pool” and that she very much enjoyed spending time in Guernsey. “I want to enjoy everything and enjoy life,” she tells us. Ania and Ola, also aged 10, shared this sentiment, declaring that they had been delighted by all the activities, especially appreciating the horse and carriage ride in Sark. They were willing to try anything provided it was interesting! As well as acting as interpreter, Gundega has also been hosting children from Chernobyl for the first time. She hopes to remain in touch with the two girls she is looking after, having already skyped with their families back home in Belarus. Anne and Terry Watt have been hosting children from Chernobyl for several years and continue to receive correspondence from the families of children whom they cared for over the years. Tracey and Nick Trott, who are hosting children for the second time, have two boys named Yarik and Sasha. Involved with the scheme since 2013, they heartily endorse the bridge with the Chernobyl charity, as it is a “worthwhile cause that is rewarding for both sides”. Tracey particularly enjoys seeing the children reach milestones during their stay, such as learning to swim or learning to ride a bike. As the afternoon drew to a close, the time came for Gallery Magazine to slip away, leaving the children of Chernobyl to laugh and play with their host families in the Guernsey sunshine. When the children return to Belarus, they will be taking home a big bag of supplies, including clothing, a year’s supply of vitamins and over-the-counter medication for their families (such as cough medicine and painkillers which are difficult to acquire in Belarus). English books, which they can share with their school friends and uncontaminated seeds for planting, are also provided. The people of Guernsey are helping these amazing children to build for the future. The Chernobyl link is not just a holiday – for the children (and host families) it is truly a life changing experience.

TOM DAWSON

A crack shot with a rifle and a camera, Etienne roams the island looking for the best stories to shoot. We haven’t featured him in the contributor section for a while but upon hearing the tragic news that he may be saying goodbye to his iconic 1980’s Ford Fiesta, I had to include him! We support your decision to switch to a van but we will never forget the Red Devil!

The slightly older version of Tom Dawson has recently unveiled himself to the Island’s residents. The recent birthday boy celebrated in style and now Tom Dawson V2.0 is ready for action. All of his stats have increased including his flair for design and unparalleled virility.

Co-op help Les Voies school create an outdoor learning space, we hope they leave the wheelbarrow!

Co-op have helping hands Hundreds of young, elderly and underprivileged islanders from across the Bailiwick will benefit this year from funds donated by The Channel Island Co-operative Society’s Helping Hands initiative. Among 35 Channel Island recipients this year are 15 charities, youth groups, schools, church congregations and social-welfare care providers in Guernsey Helping Hands was set up to provide a financial boost to good causes. This year there were 98 applicants for a share of just over £16,000. Among this year’s recipients in Guernsey is Les Voies School in Collings Road, St Peter Port. As part of their Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, secondary school children have been creating an outdoor learning space and sensory garden for primary school children. The school received £500 from the Society’s fund.

The Lloyds Bank Foundation has contributed £30,000.00 towards supporting the role of Guernsey’s specialist urooncology nurse, which was secured by Male Uprising Guernsey earlier this year. The significant contribution, which is spread over three years, is an important step towards the charity’s fundraising goal and was awarded by the Lloyds Bank Foundation in response to the charity’s application. The funding for the urooncology post is made through HSSD and the total cost over three years amounts to around £130,000.00. MUG has raised considerable funds to secure the post and the contribution from the Foundation has been gratefully accepted by the charity.

Tony Mancini, Executive Director in the firm’s Guernsey office, said that they were excited to participate in the programme proven to enrich employee health and wellbeing. “Many of our people can spend a lot of their working day seated at their desks. We want to empower and encourage them to incorporate some beneficial physical activity into their daily lives. The GCC provides an effective and enjoyable way to achieve this.”

Local company makes water a ‘Shore Thing’ A group of RBC Wealth Management staff, joined by family and friends, spent a sunny Sunday at L’Eree, along with La Societe Guernesiaise, participating in a beach clean and low water wildlife survey. The beach clean was used to highlight RBC Blue Water Day - an annual initiative that encourages RBC staff around the globe to get involved in local activities that help ensure water resources are fit for swimming, drinking and fishing, both now and for generations to come. RBC staff spent their time at L’Eree participating in la Societe Guernesiaise’s ‘The Shore Thing’, which is an initiative working with schools and community groups to collect information on marine life of rocky shores around BritainVolunteers were provided with cards displaying images of different species, such as varieties of crab, shellfish and seaweed, that they were tasked with finding. Jessi Jennings, Marine Biology Section Secretary for La Société Guernesiaise said: ‘Surveys like this are an important indication of the effects of climate change on our shores. Following each survey, we upload our findings to The Shore Thing database so that any changes on a national level can be monitored. This type of survey is relatively straightforward so everyone can get involved. It’s a really good way to introduce youngsters to our diverse coastline as well as helping to increase local knowledge of what can be found in our rock pools”. GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

Barclays supports Scouting

Staff from Barclays in Guernsey have been supporting Scouting in Guernsey by helping to clean, paint and plant at Les Maingys Activity Centre, the local Scout Headquarters. The bank has supported the Scouts in Guernsey for several years. Previously the organisation has received grants from the Barclays Champion Charities programme but this year staff have got involved by giving up their time to volunteer.

Mitch Buchannon wishes he had one of these.

Carey Olsen raise money at sea The Channel Islands Air Search and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) have been nominated as the chosen charities to receive funds raised by this year’s Carey Olsen Inter-Island Yacht Race. The sponsor, Carey Olsen, hosted a seventies’ themed party and prize presentation for the skippers and their crews after the race on 7 June in a marquee at the St Helier Yacht Club with all proceeds going to the cause. The Channel Islands Air Search is a voluntary service providing a rapid airborne search and rescue service using an Islander Aircraft in and around the Channel Islands. The operating area covers some 4,000 square miles of water surrounding the Channel Islands and the adjacent French coasts. The service has been running for 33 years and costs around £90,000 per year to maintain.

Guernsey language lives on through translation service A translation service provided by the Guernsey Language Commission is resonating with islanders who are keen to celebrate Guernsey’s own language. Users of the free service, which has received sponsorship from Fletcher Sports, have included crafts people and those creating locally-themed merchandise for sale. The most unusual request to date has come from somebody planning a Guernsey French tattoo. Michelle Mahy now has the legend “Caontinue à Batté” – “beating on” - near her heart to mark the detection of a heart condition. Chairman of the Guernsey Language Commission Deputy Darren Duquemin said: “One of our objectives is to encourage people to be proud of Guernsey’s language. This can be done in a number of ways and the translation service is a great way of facilitating and supporting interest in and enjoyment of Guernésiais. We hope that many people will continue to make use of it.”

Each year the Safety Calling Challenge involves all 10 and 11-year-old school children attending half-day safety workshops, organised by the Guernsey Child Accident Prevention Group. During the workshops they are shown a video about making an emergency 999 call. Sure has given £5,000 to cover the costs of shooting a new video as the old version had become dated and was no longer usable. ‘This financial support from Sure has enabled us to shoot a fresh, up-to-date version that will hopefully get through to these children the importance of making an emergency call,’ said Yvonne Le Page, chairman of GCAPG and Health Promotion Manager.

I’M NEARLY 22 YEARS OLD AND I’M WRITING THIS ARTICLE FROM MY GARAGE. IT’S SLIGHTLY LACKING IN THE SCANDINAVIAN CHIC DEPARTMENT THAT I’M SO FOND OF, BUT AT LEAST LIVING IN A CORRUGATED IRON CLAD BOX BRINGS ME CLOSER TO NATURE, THE PATIO FURNITURE AND THE WASHING MACHINE. The reason I suffer as I do is because quite plainly there is no affordable housing for young people on the island. I live alongside my family in their modest three-bedroom house, but in the converted garage; like the social gremlin I am. I spat my drink out like they do on telly when I heard recently that a friend had managed to get herself a mortgage already despite being a year younger than myself. Turns out it was for a bedsit with a mezzanine, but no one scoffs at a mezzanine. When I have seen what looks like a pretty sweet deal, a nice modern flat in town for ONLY £900 a month… it’s often the case that a wide angle lens has had a lot to do with its appeal. With prices like that it’s no wonder people are desperately shacking up to find a partner just to share the cost of rent. Despite this, it seems like there are building sites everywhere, which includes the incessant catcalling I get from those builders (I don’t). What’s becoming more apparent is that these new developments springing up aren’t just any old housing developments, I’ve been inside one of the recently finished apartment blocks and there was a bloody water feature where you go to collect your post. I’m all for ridiculous displays of wealth, Stephanie and Dom are my favourite Gogglebox couple, but I feel like my face is being rubbed in it a bit here. The way this issue has been addressed in the local media says it all. Channel TV recently announced: ‘Channel Television can reveal that the prospect of truly affordable homes is being promised in Jersey.’ That just made me realise, what’s the point in anything being unaffordable in the first place?

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Surely by its nature something that is unaffordable is never going to get sold? This shouldn’t be a news story - as if the idea of being able to afford a place to live was the stuff of fairy tales. The Guernsey Press are calling it ‘crisis point’ for many families who are being forced to leave their homes and that’s ridiculous. There was an article recently that exposed the severity of London house prices, meaning it was actually cheaper to live in Barcelona and commute every day than to live in central London itself. As someone currently looking for a place in London, I’m increasingly seeing little difference between the house prices here - at least to rent, to the prices in the capital. It means that a lot of young workers like myself have to annoy their parents for a few more years, it must be even worse if they don’t have a garage to shove them in. This in turn has created a generation of wimpy boys who don’t know how to make toast yet. These toast virgins though are among a class of school leavers who are walking into £25k a year finance jobs even though in the UK they’d be begging for a work experience placement at McDonalds. The higher wages island-wide do tend to be cited as a perfectly logical reason for the higher house prices. Factoring in the overall cost of living though, perhaps it doesn’t always add up in our favour. What seems to be the case is that a lot of prime development ground is being dedicated from the off, to new builds and for the boat-shoe wearing sector of our community. That’s great, but I’d like to see more evidence of plans in place for affordable housing going through too. I hope the Cour de Parc development has a few luxury features for its tenants anyway, perhaps a Orchid plantation in the lobby? It really is lovely if you can afford to sit atop your penthouse suite surveying your empire. But spare a thought for the rest of us with nothing to look at but washing.

BUILDING YOUNG MINDS

WORDS Grant Runyon | ILLUSTRATION Will Bertram

T

he desire to build is one of a small list of things that separates mankind from monkeys. Other primates are content to weave a bed out of twigs and grass or, at best, hide under a pile of cardboard boxes at Durrell, but it is only Homo Sapiens who has raised his eyes above the forest floor and yearned to construct a stairway to the heavens.

The history of civilisation revolves around these proud monuments to the human spirit. Picture the mournful swelling of the Taj Mahal’s iconic dome, the martial grandeur of Rome’s Colosseum, the third floor of Minden Place Car Park; these are the things that separate us from the beasts, and the people who live in Sark. Little humans, themselves often no more than filthy, screeching apes, often experience the desire to build even before they learn to talk. I like to think this is the moment when they first glimpse a momentary understanding of the higher purpose to which all

creativity strives, but it’s just as likely that they have yet to master the coordination necessary to crawl across the room and smear their own poop across the wall. If you look at it like that, a child trying to make a seesaw out of Duplo is a truly beautiful thing. As kids get older, most abandon construction and invention in favour of shouting and breaking things somebody else has built. This is a shame - whilst many animals make noise and kick things, only humanity has the potential to build a functional replica of London Bridge with Meccano. Those with the spirit to build are a minority even within our species, which is why they should be honoured. Civilisation has need of those with the patience to assemble a Lego Death Star, whereas people who are more interested in poop smearing will only ever be truly useful if our fate rests on the need for their equivalent skill in making stinky, unpleasant Facebook comments. Join me in saluting the builders of the future, although obviously I mean metaphorical rather than actual builders. I hope Lego doesn’t teach kids how to stop work every fifteen minutes, read The Sun with their shirts off and overcharge you for a sack of gravel.

BUILDING MAKES SOCIETY POSSIBLE

Birds, beavers, ants and badgers also build, but humanity does it best. Without buildings you don’t have society, you just have a bunch of people sat around getting sunburned and trying not to get eaten by lions. One day somebody had the bright idea of building a wall out of stones and mud and 30,000 years later you have symphonic music, hospitals and the George Foreman Grill. Lions remain where they belong - either outside being shot at by rich people, or in a zoo, surrounded by walls. Take that, lions. A child enclosing Spongebob within a tower of protective plastic bricks is responding to this same inherent instinct - the desire to protect, to order, to civilise. This is wonderful, but do consult a brain-doctor if you come home and little Alfie has covered the bedroom carpet with miniature concrete towers, imposing stadiums and tiny statues of himself invading Lego-Poland.

THE MOST TALENTED PEOPLE IN HISTORY HAVE BEEN ARCHITECTS, SCULPTORS OR DESIGNERS

Leonardo; Michelangelo; Raphael - not just sewer-dwelling vigilantes but some of the brightest lights of the European renaissance. Aside from a devotion to the teachings of Master Splinter, one thing these creative titans all had in common was that their interest in art and culture spilled over into the practical spheres of architecture and invention. Whole cities evolved into living works of art under the influence of these noble spirits, a feat which has yet to be reproduced for what passes as an artist in today’s world. Tracy Emin has never designed a cathedral; the closest thing she’s managed is a tent full of her dirty pants. Banksy hasn’t got a single fountain-lined plaza on his résumé, the only thing Rolf Harris is building is a strong defence case and Damien Hirst probably couldn’t put up a sandcastle without a massive arts council grant. The thing that unites these lesser artists? As children, I believe they owned Etch-A-Sketch and Spirographs rather than Lego or Sticklebricks. Well, maybe not Damien Hirst, he probably started off pickling My Little Ponies.

THE LEGO SET IS A METAPHOR FOR ALL FUTURE ENDEAVOURS

Many modern toys seem purposely designed to stunt a child’s fragile mind. The ownership of a Furby teaches them nothing about the future, other than that society finds annoying noises and garish colours somehow endearing. This is only useful if you intend to grow up into Lady Gaga or the star of a TV show about Essex. Lego, on the other hand, teaches us lessons about planning and perseverance the minute we first open the packaging. A child will soon learn that, although Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy is pictured on the outside of the box, the contents are seventy six bags of anonymous bricks and the promise of hours of work. They will learn to wield the strongest magic of all - imagination, and possibly some very dangerous curses. Harry Potter Lego contains the lesson that magic isn’t real, but that achieving anything in life is complicated, laborious and extremely painful if somebody leaves sharp bits of plastic hidden in the carpet.

BUILDING IS THE ONLY SENSIBLE RESPONSE TO OVERPOPULATION

THE OWNERSHIP OF A FURBY TEACHES THEM NOTHING ABOUT THE FUTURE, OTHER THAN THAT SOCIETY FINDS ANNOYING NOISES AND GARISH COLOURS SOMEHOW ENDEARING. THIS IS ONLY USEFUL IF YOU INTEND TO GROW UP INTO LADY GAGA OR THE STAR OF A TV SHOW ABOUT ESSEX

The talent to build a Meccano ferris wheel may be a rare one amongst humans but there’s one talent which is unfortunately less unusual, and that is the talent to build more humans. We’re all at it, filling up the available space on this planet with useless babies who will grow up to want semi-detached houses and a parking space near the office. Who will build these semi-detached houses? It is only through the talents of the builders and planners that all these new people have enough food and anywhere to live that isn’t a filthy bolthole underneath some rocks. Without the sort of people who play with Meccano and train sets, we would doubtless descend into incest and cannibalism within a matter of months. Yes, parents - the child assembling a farmyard scene is the agriculturalist of the future; the Playdough baker will grow up to bake loaves to feed the hungry. It’s true that the ones who prefer GeoMag and KNEX might end up wearing white coats and accidentally designing a new kind of nuclear weapon, but it’s still better to grow up wanting an apocalypse button in your Lego bunker than whatever it is the Furby-owning child will be playing with outside when the bomb goes off.

PET OF THE MONTH

CAROLE LE BRUN & RUBI

W

hen Carole put Rubi forward for our Pet Selfie competition in May she was playing the odds. Carole and her husband are true Ridgeback fans, entering all three of their lovely pets. Rylie and Bear were popular but it was Rubi that beat off 315 other pets to be crowned Gallery’s Pet Selfie of 2014.

RUBI

24

It was therefore fitting that we meet Carole, Rubi and their friends and learn a bit more about them so in this month’s extended Pet of the Month we hear about Carole’s love for these gentle giants.

My husband had always wanted a Rhodesian Ridgeback since he first read about them when he was just 16. Sadly we lost our Dalmation to old age and a few months later decided the time was right to get a Ridgeback. That was 1986 and since then we have had seven. We currently have 3 at home; Rubi, Rylie & Bear. Rubi & Rylie are the parents to Bear from a litter we bred nearly 4 years ago. The litter resulted in 9 puppies but sadly one was still born. It was an amazing experience, very time consuming, and not one to be taken lightly. It was lovely to see them grow day by day and watch their different personalities develop! I still worry about the puppies and always will as we chose to breed a litter, but it's wonderful to know that they are all in a loving home. There were a few hiccups in the first year, but we check up on them and all are now happy.

GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

A Ridgeback is not for everyone. When they are puppies they grow fast; one minute you can pick them up but a month or so later they will have grown so much that you would find it hard to pick them up and cuddle them. They are the biggest couch potatoes at home but get the lead out and they are raring to go. Unless of course it's raining, then nothing will get them out. They have been known to 'cross' their legs for 24 hours rather than go outside and get wet! They are hounds, and hunt with their nose, but also use their ears and eyes, so some sort of obedience is a must, even it it's only a recall. They can, however, suddenly turn 'deaf' if they smell rabbits, rats or squirrels. There should be a warning in the breed standard for the Ridgeback as they are the biggest ‘counter surfers’; as they are quite tall, food is not safe to be left within reach as they literally stand on their tiptoes to get it, and they can make it disappear within seconds! Ours have always been bought up with our children, and they make lovely family pets, providing both children and dogs are bought up to respect each other. We now have two Grandaughters, and the oldest one who is 3 1/2 adores them, and they adore her. All in all a wonderful breed and I could write so much more, and although I love all dogs, this breed has a very special place in my heart.

Rubi: Hunting rabbits and rat's & squirrels when they go over to the UK. Carole: Loves dogs and all animals, and showing her dogs. HATES:

INTERESTING FACT:

Rhodesian Ridgebacks were originally bred to go on safari with hunters in South Africa, they would hold the prey at bay until the hunters arrived, this was normally Lions, which is why some people call them 'Lion dogs'. They have a 'ridge' along their back, the hairs grows the other way, most people think it's brushed that way, but they are actually born with it. Although occasionally some are born without a ridge, they are still Ridgebacks. MOST IMPRESSIVE THING EVER DONE:

Rubi qualified for Crufts for life at the age of 2 years old and we have entered several times since she qualified, but it proves very expensive.

would probably be a Princess, she doesn't like laying on the floor and 'insists' on laying on the settee/bed and believes it's beneath her to do otherwise. If Carole were an animal she would want to be loved and spoilt as much as my dogs are.

WANTS: Rubi would love to have an

enormous wooded area where rabbits, rats and squirrels lived so she could hunt them all day. Me: Another puppy, but my husband would probably leave home.

BURNING LOVE

PIE’S UP

A Cheshire teenager has been quizzed by police after pushing a custard pie into a teacher's face on his last day of lessons. Teachers did not see the funny side when Jacob Dowdle played the prank at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys. Officers later called at the student's family home in Hale Barns last week and took him to the station for questioning. And Mr Dowdle, 18, was expelled after the school discovered a video of the incident had been posted online. He has apologised in writing and is begging the school to reverse its decision. He has launched an online petition, backed by TV comedian Jason Manford. "People were playing pranks all day, and when the teacher came out the conservatory I was being egged on by mates. It was just a rush of blood to the head. "I regret what I did. I sent a letter of apology to her - but I've been told she never wants to hear from me again." The student and his family have been told the punishment is permanent exclusion, although he can return to take his A-level exams. School headteacher Tim Gartside said: "Jacob Dowdle's behaviour was not a prank. His slapping of a teacher in the face was a planned assault. "The school will always take a firm stance with students who assault staff in any way."

Men in China are using a massage technique which involves flaming towels being placed over their privates to enhance their love lives. Dubbed ancient Chinese Viagra, this fire therapy, similar to cupping and acupuncture, has been used as a therapeutic method in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. After heating, a herbal medicine is used that helps promote blood circulation, claim practitioners. Ken Cho, a 33-year-old banker, is among those who goes once a week for the red-hot treatment on his nether regions. He said: “I have tried all sorts of therapies in the past to keep my sexual performance up to speed but this is by far the best.” Xian Smui, a practitioner of the art, said: “Burning alcohol on the towels creates heat without burning the organs of the patient beneath. “Although I use it primarily on sexual organs, it is a useful form of therapy for arthritis and back pain sufferers too.” Right.

PRINTED FRUIT?

Yes, now apparently it’s a thing. Cambridge-based, “Dovetailed” has developed a 3D printer they say can make edible harvests on demand. The device uses a molecular-gastronomy technique called spherification which combines liquid droplets to a desired shape, allows the creation of bespoke fruits in seconds. No specialist knowledge of cuisine or molecular-gastronomy is required to "rapidly create fresh and organic 3D fruits on demand". Dr. Vaiva Kalnikaite, Creative Director and Founder of Dovetailed, says: "We have re-invented the concept of fresh fruit on demand." Chief inventor Dr Gabriel Villar added: "With our novel printing technique, you can not only recreate existing fruits, but also invent your own creations. Oooh fancy.

ROGUE TANK

A pair of pranksters got the shock of their lives when they climbed into a rusting old WW2 tank perched on a monument in Ukraine - and started it up. The tank was atop a memorial in Kostiantynivka, an industrial city in eastern Ukraine, when the jokers who were both mechanics clambered aboard and began poking about inside. Built in 1943, retired in 1945, and placed on the pedestal in 1994, the mighty diesel engine stunned the mechanics when it roared into life after they bent some wires in the ignition and played around with them. "No-one was more surprised than me when she kicked into life," said Dimitry Koskalovin, 23, who clambered into the tank with his pal Mikhail Stakavan, 22. "We let it rip for a few minutes and then did a runner. We never meant to pinch it or anything."

ou could almost envisage that Guernsey was designed. Our perfect triangle with its coastal beaches, cliffs and harbour inspire many of us to ponder how we can contribute to the future of our island. Guernsey, like its geography, is multi-faceted; full of a wealth of ideas across the spectrum from the environment to housing and architecture, from health to education, from our green spaces to transport, from protecting nature to the sea that surrounds us… the possibilities are endless.

Welcome to I am Guernsey. Livingroom and PF+A have got together to launch a new competition to spark the imagination of anyone with a passion for the island in which we live. We know there are thousands of people passionate about Guernsey life and we want you to contribute to the thinking of how we can make Guernsey the best place on earth to live. We don’t want to stifle your ideas by making suggestions or giving you a theme. This is about anything you think would enhance island life. I am Guernsey is more than a concept. We hope that the ideas generated in this competition will form part of planning for the future for Guernsey. I Am Guernsey is open to two age groups: under 18 years old and over 18 years old. Anyone with an idea is eligible to enter. All entries need to be submitted digitally. The competition is now open and will close on Friday, 10 October 2014. ARC

the charitable art of ARC words : Adam Kennedy | Linda Garnham

L

inda Garnham was barely 16 when she joined the Women’s Royal Army Corps. Following training, she got to travel up and down the UK as ambulance and staff car driver and even drove around VIP’s like the Duchess of Kent, Princess Anne and Margaret Thatcher (not to mention transporting the soldiers that stormed the Iranian Embassy back in 1980 – so covert that the purpose wasn’t known until afterwards).

Whilst in the Army, Linda was particularly inspired by her experience teaching a physically and mentally disabled young boy to swim. The pride of transporting VIP’s paled in comparison and she soon realised that helping others was her true calling. In 2000, Linda began her career as a childcare officer for children’s services – a job she does to this day. Along the way, Linda was fortunate enough to be sponsored by Mary Perkins to do some full-time charity work – something that she committed to as a sabbatical for four years.

34

This move came about when an army friend asked her to join “Operation Angel” (lead by Sally “Angel of Mostar” Becker) to provide aid to Bosnia and Kosovo. A badly organised trip to a dangerous, war-torn area of eastern Europe encouraged Linda to do it better. On returning to Guernsey, Linda started the “ARC Of Albania” charity recruiting volunteers to take over 100 tonnes of aid (food, clothing, medical supplies and toys) to Kosovan/Kosovar refugees and orphanages. After multiple trips delivering aid, “ARC of Albania” was changed to simply “Aid Reaching Children”. The 2001 earthquake in Gujarat, India was a clarion call for Linda to get back into action. She had scarcely seen the TV footage before arranging for two trucks worth of blankets and tents (donated by Guernsey folk) to be sent to India. In the process, ARC also collected over £13,000 from generous islanders. When the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami hit South East Asia, Linda put out an immediate appeal for supplies and volunteers. The old post office on Guelles Road was secured for eighty volunteers to sort through thousands of locally donated items and filled two containers.

Of all the places hit by the floods, ARC’s aid went to Sri Lanka and this time Linda went along too to see things first-hand. Under the guidance of The Salvation Army, Linda and the team ended up assisting various projects in Hikkaduwa. Her time there was spent helping with various projects, providing food supplies, fishing equipment and even sewing machines whilst gauging who really needed help versus those simply looking to exploit the charitable venture. Eventually, ARC’s efforts (along with £50,000 raised by Guernsey residents) went to a place called Balapitiya where a derelict house was turned into a boys’ orphanage that now houses fifty children. On one trip, Linda attended a large blaze – Eighteen shelter homes caught fire when a lady tried to extinguish her fallen candle with a petrol container she mistook for water. A real Guernsey effort ensued as ARC worked with Guernsey woman Judy Moore to collect clothes and Guernsey’s ‘Mines Awareness Trust’ to transport them. Linda and her team then worked with a local lady named Deepika to ensure fair distribution. Deepika later proved instrumental in helping ARC get the unwanted Playzone from Checkers (now Waitrose at Admiral Park), to an orphanage in Galle. MAGNIFIQUE: EVENTS IN FRANCE

GET MARRIED IN A

FRENCH

CHATEAU!

LOCAL couples and families can now celebrate their dream-wedding day in France, thanks to a unique new Channel Island company dedicated to providing the finest wedding services for islanders. A Guernsey couple, Ingrid and James Colmer, created ‘The Chateau Bee’ service whilst organising their own wedding in a Brittany chateau. The couple fell in love with the incredible setting and yearned to share their experience with others. They decided to create an event company devoted to organising and designing private functions in France for Channel Islanders. Ingrid’s native French skills and certified wedding and events knowledge, combined with James’ design proficiency, ensure the couple offer all of the romance of France to islanders without any of the hassle associated with language barriers or lack of industry experience.

“Our aim is to create a bridge between France and The Channel Islands. For the last two years we have criss-crossed the different areas of France, building up our network of suppliers and sumptuous venues. From Versailles-like chateaux to rustic Provence vineyards,” explains Company Founder, Ingrid. “We have also incorporated islanders in our adventure by promoting the best artists and professionals from the Channel Islands.” The priority for the team at The Chateau Bee is to provide the client with astounding choice. Finding the perfect place to say your vows, surrounded by your nearest and dearest can be a daunting task. Our fair Isle has a limited number of venues to choose from and depending on prime date windows, can cost more than expected. But imagine swapping a local, familiar venue, for rugged coastlines, sunny lavender fields flanked by snow-covered mountains or picturesque orchards located on grand country estates. All of these exquisite choices are available due to the extensive links and affordability

of The Chateau Bee packages and their expansive wedding network across France. This includes Michelin star catering, accommodation for loved ones, transport links and wedding specialists to document your day with images and film. Its simply jaw-dropping value. Weddings are events that last more than just a few hours – and the service also arranges activities and gatherings prior to and after the big day. Designed to give you and your guests the best possible experience together – a trip that you’ll never forget. The advantages of getting married in France certainly are numerous; historical venues, gastronomic food and scenic destinations to name but a few. “It is also a great opportunity for all of your relatives, as they can make a holiday of it and have many activities organised for them, for instance a wine tasting trip or an afternoon on the golf course.” “Best of all, getting married in France is budget-friendly,” says Ingrid. “You can get a chateau for a weekend (or more) at very

SHORT HOP TRAVEL

PARIS

GALLERY TRAVEL INSIDER:

Steeped in tradition, boasting ‘culture for all’ and ‘art for art's sake’, Paris hosts plenty of inspiring and often elaborate events, which makes it a popular hot spot for budding city goers. With direct flights from Blue Islands, it’s easier than ever to experience all that this city has to offer. From ultra-arty affairs to enchanting experiences and a little light-hearted pleasure, here’s the cream of the crop.

CLUBBING IN PARIS

From tropical parties that take place in carparks to small, buzzing underground watering holes with a reputation for drawing in the crowds, Paris boasts a distinctive and elective party sound. In fact, dozens of collectives and promotors are pushing a number of new and exciting events this summer, all with an idiosyncratic feel. ALTER PANAME – the city’s freshest and most controversial venue – showcases a hungry appetite for all day (and all night) partying in the French capital and is one of the newest emerging venues to hit the Paris clubbing scene. For techno, take a stroll to the Social Club located on 142 rue Montmartre, where the signature drink comprises a shot of mint vodka, or alternatively, ZigZag, just a short walk from the Champs D’Élysées. This particular venue boasts a sound system suitably in tune with its glamorous surroundings, as well as concert hall-style balconies, an ample dance floor and a stage graced by an impressive lineup of Parisian house DJs. With a flight time of just 1 hour 20 minutes, you can spend as little or as long as you desire in this exciting city.

SERIOUS ABOUT SEAFOOD

With deliveries from the Med and Atlantic arriving on a daily basis, Parisians, just like us, take their seafood rather seriously. For a true taste of the sea, visit ECAILLER DE BISTRO (22 rue Paul Bert), owned and run by Gwen Cadoret (one of France’s great oyster-producing families). It’s here that you’ll find superbly fresh shellfish brandishing a reasonable price tag. L’llot, on the other hand, serves towering plates of fruits de mer, smoked and marinated fish,

38

alongside other enticing marine treats – the clientele consists of web designers, gallery owners and hipster types and is located on 4 rue de la Corderie. For a decent chip butty (yes even in Paris) take a trip to the SUNKEN SHIP on 39 fur des Vinaigriers. Owned and run by two Brits – an excellent chef and an extremely accomplished cook – it’s here you’ll find everything from battered bream to mushy peas. As well as enjoying a fine culinary experience on arrival, Blue Island passengers can now enjoy a similar encounter on board – from freshly baked pastries to made-to-order sandwiches, the new locally sourced menu, which runs in partnership with renowned chef Shaun Rankin, is a welcome addition to the Blue Islands complimentary inflight service.

ALL THAT JAZZ

With its heady outdoor culture, summertime in Paris has gained a rep for being somewhat of an alternative reality. With a constant stream of festivals, including semi-improvised street performances and rock concerts, there’s something to suit all. If you’re a fan of jazz, head on down to the PARC FLORAL, where you’ll witness a series of quasi-free jazz productions, all performed on an open air stage up until the Monday 28th July. Just remember to pack a picnic! For more information and news on the line-up, visit www.parisjazzfestival.fr. If you’re looking for jazz with a little more edge, acquaint one of the city’s more avantgarde clubs such as New Morning, situated in the Northern suburbs.

BASTILLE DAY

Celebrating the country’s successes in becoming a republic, Bastille Day marks the beginning of the French Revolution. Similar in nature to that of Independence Day, La Fete Nationale – which takes place on the 14th July – is not to be missed. Expect to witness everything from top-notch fireworks to a traditional military parade along the Champs-Elysées and finally, when night falls, an upbeat dance party.

PARIS PLAGE (PARIS BEACH)

From July 10th to August 26th, the banks of the Seine are transformed into a fullyfledged beach, complete with sand, cafes, open-air bars, live concerts, games and boating expeditions. Since its launch in 2003, it’s attracted millions of visitors to date.

A CINEMA EXPERIENCE WITH A TWIST

Forget indoor screenings and use the warm, balmy summer nights to your full advantage. From the 23rd July up until the 24th August, both locals and tourists head to the ultramodern PARC DE LA VILLETTE to watch one of 36 movies showcased on an ample-sized outdoor screen. The best bit? Entry is completely free.

A STRESS-FREE JOURNEY

You can fly direct to paris from as little as £89 from both Jersey and Guernsey with Blue Islands, which certainly takes the hassle out of travelling when it comes to UK transfers. Convenient flight times and an exciting new inflight catering experience mean you can begin your holiday from the moment you step on board. Visit www.blueislands.com to book your next city break!

P

am and Les Hilton are a couple with a selfproclaimed amateur interest in art and sculpture. When their favourite tree, a magnificent Monterey pine, suffered severe damage during harsh weather conditions and having previously lost several stunning trees on their property, they were determined to come up with an ingenious and creative ‘re-build’ solution in order to save as much of the pine as they could.

Combining their love of sculptures inspired by the natural world, with the unusual talents of a UK based chainsaw artist, the couple managed to make the most of what many would have deemed to be an irretrievable situation; by turning the damaged tree into an impressive and eyecatching living sculpture which perfectly complements the stunning vista of the neighbouring St Saviour reservoir. Woodcarving has been considered an art form by many different cultures throughout the course of history – however, the concept of using a chainsaw (an instrument more often associated with destruction than creation) to create intricate 3D designs and artworks is still relatively new, with the first fast-paced and adrenaline fuelled chainsaw sculpting competitions taking place in America during the 1960’s and 70’s. Today, notable chainsaw artists include former lead singer of The Runaways, Cherie Currie, and the widespread adoption of this edgy ‘rock and roll’ branch of wood carving has led to a ‘chainsaw fraternity’ growing in the UK, with sculptures being commissioned from UK artists by several golf clubs, parks and individuals up and down the country.

the Hiltons decided to commission a sculpture of a buzzard (5 foot high) to be carved out of the crown of the pine tree. Buzzards are birds of prey that Les had previously seen in Guernsey and with the site’s peaceful natural setting, the buzzard seemed like a majestic and fitting candidate to replace the branches of the pine tree. The carving of this Guernsey buzzard was a particularly ambitious project as it is to date, the highest sculpture that Burgess has ever been requested to craft. In order for the project to go ahead, the trunk of the pine had to be scaffolded (by C A Duqemin Limited) and a large working platform built in order to allow for easy movement. Once the scaffold was in place, the sculpting could begin - astonishingly the entire five foot sculpture was completed within the space of a day, using various different sizes of chainsaw to sculpt the body and ‘carve’ detail. The only other tool used was a chisel to finish off the beak and eyes. As pine is a light colour, part of the wood was burnt lightly and then treated carefully with oils and preserves in order to highlight the delicate and finely detailed feathering. The Hilton’s property is a light and airy living space, which borrows design elements and natural finishes from many places around the world. Whilst strolling around the garden, it quickly becomes clear that this couple are ‘eagle-eyed’ curators of unusual and beautiful outdoor sculptures undoubtedly, the jewel in the crown of this collection (which includes orb fountains and bonsai trees) can be seen when you look to the skies and are greeted with the majestic sight of the five-foot wooden buzzard, emerging from the rich gnarled bark of the aforementioned Monterey pine. Gallery Magazine would like to thank Pam and Les Hilton for allowing us into their home.

Having witnessed the exciting chainsaw sculpting art process first-hand whilst on holiday in the USA a few years ago, and seeing an unusual opportunity to preserve what they could salvage of the rich depth and texture of the Monterey pine trunk, the Hiltons managed to get in touch with Tim Burgess, a UK chainsaw artist based in Manchester and agree a commission. Burgess, an artist who recently retired from a career as chief superintendent of the Manchester Metropolitan police force, now specialises in carving large birds of prey out of tree trunks. NIGHTLIFE

Jersey Live Festival with JT returns this August for its 11th edition at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity, Jersey, headlined by Ben Howard and Ellie Goulding and featuring a raft of stars of indie and dance music including Klaxons, Duke Dumont, Lucy Rose and Mark Knight, and we’re pleased to announce the latest wave of acts to be added to the lineup. We’re delighted to welcome London-based four-piece Bombay Bicycle Club to the festival for the first time, with the indie-rock outfit’s first number one in the UK album charts earlier this year (their fourth album So Long, See You Tomorrow) elevating them to the upper reaches of the British music royalty. Since first emerging on the UK music scene after winning a competition to perform the opening slot at V Festival 2006, the band have gone from strength to strength, with headline tours worldwide, an Ivor Novello nomination (for Best Album in 2011 for Flaws) and the Best New Band prize at the 2010 NME Awards. Their blend of electronic, folk and rock influences combines with an uncanny ear for a melody, resulting in numerous indie anthem, from ‘Always Like This’, ‘Lights Out, Words Gone’ and ‘Feel’ being just a few of them.

Also performing on the Main Stage over the weekend is acclaimed guitarist and folk singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner. With four Top 10 charting albums to his name, including his 2007 debut Hand Built By Robots and 2012’s Write It On Your Skin, Faulkner’s heartfelt lyricism and idiosyncratic playing style have made him a huge star. Having performed at countless festivals worldwide, including Glastonbury, Lollapalooza and Isle of Wight Festival to name just a few, he certainly knows how to make the big stage his own, and with songs like ‘Dream Catch Me’ and ‘Teardrop’ awaiting our festival audience, this set has all the ingredients of a Jersey Live classic.

“THERE’S NOT LONG TO GO UNTIL THE BIGGEST WEEKEND OF THE YEAR FOR LIVE MUSIC FANS, AND I’M OVER THE MOON TO HAVE ADDED BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB TO THE LINEUP. WE’VE BEEN HOPING TO GET THEM TO THE FESTIVAL FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW SO IT’S GREAT TO HAVE THEM COMING TO THE FESTIVAL AT LAST! NEWTON FAULKNER IS ANOTHER GREAT ADDITION – HE’S A FANTASTIC SONGWRITER, GUITARIST AND LIVE PERFORMER, AS I’M SURE HIS MANY JERSEY-BASED FANS WILL AGREE.” CO-ORGANISER WARREN HOLT

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE PAR 4 FIELD:

Jersey Live Festival this year has an expanded Par 4 Field, with live shows, interactive installations and games galore for kids during the day, and more grown up entertainment after dark, with bands like festival stalwarts Dreadzone already confirmed. We’re pleased to announce a number of new additions to the area: Kids will hear storytelling from The Roald Dahl Museum with interactive performances of his famous ‘Revolting Rhymes & Dirty Beasts’, as well as being entertained by magician, musician and comedian Fred’s Flying Circus – whose varied audiences have ranged from Madonna to Prince Phillips! We’ve also added some unusual décor to the area, not least a 30-foot long whale, inside which is a museum of deep sea wonders! Last, but by no means least, we’re very pleased to welcome back to Jersey Live global beatboxing star Schlomo who returns with his Beatboxing Adventure for Kids show after debuting here last here last year on the Dance Stage. Widely acknowledged as one of the most adventurous performing artists around, he’s collaborated with artists as diverse as Jarvis Cocker, Bjork, Ed Sheeran and DJ Yoda, appeared at Edinburgh Fringe with his one-man theatrical show ‘Mouthtronica’ and held the position of Director of the world’s first beatboxing choir. The grownups love him, we’re sure the kids will too. We’re also honoured to welcome to Jersey Live legendary broadcaster, reggae DJ and Member of the British Empire, David Rodigan MBE. Having started out his reggae broadcasting career in 1978 on BBC Radio London, Rodigan has over 30 years as top dog in the bass-heavy atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dance halls, accruing an encyclopedic knowledge of Jamaican music along the way. His credibility was ensured when he began clashing with Jamaica’s champion DJ, Barry G on JBC Radio in Jamaica before going on to clash with all the top Jamaican sound systems in the West Indies, the USA and England, and in 2012 he won the ultimate clash victory when he took the Champion Trophy at World Clash Reset in New York. With a regular show on BBC 1Xtra and as a staple of the festival circuit, some might say that at the age of 63, he’s at the height of his powers. We’re delighted to have him playing on the Hospitality and Par 4 Stages over the weekend.

SHLOMO’S ADVENTURES IN BEATBOXING

THE RINKY DINK

Aside from the music, the key ingredients that make Jersey Live so special are its unique setting – as the British Isles’ most southerly festival destination, Jersey enjoys more sunshine per annum than any other place in the UK, and Jersey Live’s delightfully quaint rural surroundings in the Parish of Trinity have to be seen to be believed – and its warm and welcoming crowd. Many a visitor has discovered the island through venturing to Jersey Live and made it a holiday destination of choice for years after; with miles and miles of stunning beaches, cliff top walks, unrivalled restaurants and vibrant St Helier nightlife, who can blame them?

PRINTED MATTERS As a publisher, we’re in love with printed items. If we had the room for our very own screen printer, our workspace would be flooded with joy and smiles on a daily basis. We’re lucky enough to know a few people who have their own…

I

ris and Dora Designs takes its name from the daughters of its founders. Diana Rodriguez and Denyse McGahy started the business to produce beautiful artworks and functional household items with materials that they source ethically and ensure are environmentally friendly. The business is a story of local economic success, evolving over the 18 months. The two initially bonded over a passing interest in needle felting and a deep love of books. They started cutting into remaindered book pages and stumbled across the work of papercut artists such as Rob Ryan and the Cuban-American artist Elsa Mora.

The options were to have the designs printed offisland, or learn the trade themselves. They went for the latter, initially working from a kitchen table before moving to their studio above Rex Stationers in St Peter Port.

” 44

Their visual language is very local in inspiration. Many of their papercuts are of Guernsey scenes and maps. They came to screenprinting as a way of reproducing their intricate papercuts, which are extremely time-consuming to make. The options were to have the designs printed off-island, or learn the trade themselves. They went for the latter, initially working from a kitchen table before moving to their studio above Rex Stationers in St Peter Port. Screen-printing has allowed them to use colour, and while they still papercut many of their designs, they also draw with pen and ink and are experimenting with more painterly ways of screen-printing. They do most of the work themselves (including rolling their own lampshades!) but have a local network of skilled artisans who help them: a sail-maker, a greenhouse carpenter and a seamstress. Over the summer they are opening a small showroom underneath the studio, which will expand the space available for printing. They also run workshops and open-access sessions and welcome anyone – no experience necessary – to come and join them! Learn more - call 07781 464 586

grapefruit essential oils are just the thing to get you going in the morning and you can afford to be generous with it. £7.99 Boots. A little bronzing shimmer looks great over tanned legs and shoulders. The new Clarins Shimmer Body Oil contains hazelnut oil, which is very nourishing. It’s a limited edition online exclusive for summer so get it while you can. £38.00. clarins.co.uk

Heat–proof make up

Make up has a tendency to slip and slide in the warm weather and whilst there are some great long-lasting formulas out there (like the Bobbi Brown Shadow Sticks) rather than investing in new eye make up, buy a new base to help your favourite shadows stay true, all day long. Lancôme La Base Paupières Pro does just that and comes in six shades to suit all skin tones. It’s creamy, yet waterproof and works well as a skin perfector when you just want to rock a bare faced look. Use under an eyeshadow and

it will stop your colour creasing or fading. £21.00. Creaseys.

Hair rescue

Heat and perspiration do nothing for your hair but I’ve discovered a trio of rescue products from Pantene. The Pantene Pro-V Dry Shampoos absorb excess oils, dirt and grease on the hair and give it a pick-me-up. Choose from Refresh, for between washes, Color Savior, which promises to bring back shine and Volume Booster to give hair a little lift. Blondes can go brassy with sun and pool chlorine and the Color Wow Brass Banned Mousse for blondes is a clever idea for summer. It’s alcohol free, so it won’t dry hair that’s likely to be already a little dehydrated and the lavender tint counteracts the brassy tones. £16.50. victoriahealth.com

Skin saviours

If you are out on the beach, in the sea or have been sitting in the sun your skin can

quickly dry out. The Eau Thermale Avene Water Spray is a lovely way to spritz a bit

of life back into your complexion. Leave one on your desk for hot afternoons and also add it into your skincare routine for a moisture boost. Spray on after cleansing and then apply your serums and moisturisers as normal. £3.15. Boots.

Clinique Smart Custom-Repair Serum

is a new multi-tasking serum that claims to target visible skin damage and also that which lies beneath the surface. It balances soothing ingredients with potent actives. In total there are 37 patents and together they address dull, uneven skin tone; lines and wrinkles; loss of firmness; decreased hydration levels and suppleness. The cocktail of ingredients targets only where needed and switches on as required. It’s a one step anti-ager that’s perfect for anyone who wants to simplify their skincare routine. £48.00. Creaseys.

t’s often hard to know where to start when you’re faced with so many products and decisions when putting together your perfect look for Summer, so we spoke to CREASEY’S cosmetic team to get some hot July tips...

Where else on the island would you get this much knowledge on top international cosmetic brands.

Meet Julia from Clarins

Meet Nicky from Lancôme

Meet Sara from Benefit

Julia recommends the all-NEW Radiance Plus Golden Glow Booster (£15.00). Just mix this amazing serum with any moisturizer to gradually build up a natural looking tan. Once you have your golden glow, you can give your lips moisture and shine with the Colour Quench Lip Balm (£14.50). Top off with the Truly Waterproof Mascara (£17.50) to double the volume and have 12 hours of make up wear for your lashes. Then use the must-have refreshing fixing mist Fix Make Up (£18.30) to ensure an unrivalled make-up hold.

Nicky has some exciting new products in-store this month with the new City Miracle Foundation (£27.00/£35.00). Available in three shades, this gorgeous base makes your skin look just peachy! Smoothing like a primer, it beautifies like an illuminator, hydrates like a moisturiser and corrects like skin care. It also contains SPF50. You can enhance your cheeks with Lancôme Blusher (£22.50) and brighten and boost your skin using Nicky’s favourites; the Advanced Génifique (£68.50, 50ml) or reduce fine lines with the Génifique Yeux Light Pearl (£38.50, 20ml).

Sara has been eagerly anticipating the launch of Benefit’s They’re Real! Pushup Liner (£15.50); it’s a lashhugging gel liner in a pen with an AccuFlexTM tip that makes it beyond easy to get close to the lashline! Sara has to wait until early July when the liner is launched, so in the meantime, her three favourite Benefit basic items are the classic and popular They’re Real! Mascara (£16.50), POREfessional (£20.50) a PRO balm that minimises the appearance of pores and the cute, but essential, Gimme Brow (£15.00) that is one of the brand’s top-sellers!

Build upon your already flawless look by adding some delicious floral fragrance with the NEW Miss Dior Cherie Blooming Bouquet (£68.00, 100ml).

Tracey’s favourite products this July are the quick fix Chubby Stick Tint for Eyes (£14.00) and Chubby Stick Moisturising Lip Balm (£14.00). With a selection of colours available, Tracey recommends using these for those quick two-minute makeovers when timing is tight. If you want to provide your skin with the best age defence too, the Clinique BB Cream (£21.50) will also give you a great base to work on - add a final cheeky glow with the Clinique Cheek Pop (£17.50) and you’re all set!

Camille constructs a refreshing look with the NEW Clear Difference Advanced Blemish Serum (£48.50, 50ml) for the base. If you’re keen on reducing redness, minimising pores and getting clearer complexion; this is the serum for you. Using Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation (£24.00), (there’s 20 shades available!) you can then place the finishing touches with Camille’s favourites: Pure Colour Envy Lipstick (£20.00) (we love the wicked pink colour ‘Infamous’) and add definition with the Sumptuous Extreme LashMultiplying Mascara (£18.50).

For Amy, the staple product of any season is the YSL Touche Eclat (£21.00) to build any brilliant look. Cheeks and lips are the blueprint for complimenting a summer glow and YSL’s Baby Doll Kiss and Blush (£22.50) lets you have the best of both worlds. Teamed with YSL Baby Doll Mascara (£20.50) to define your lashes in either black, brown, blue and purple and the YSL Couture Palette (£35.00), which comes in a range of colours; they’re the perfect additions to your summer look!

HAYLEY’S LOOK

GET THE LOOK words | Hayley Webb

Colours can make or break a look, so look no further for this seasons key shades and how to wear them. Summer 2014 has gifted us with some inspiring colours to mix with fresh trends worn in a bold way; it’s an exciting time to experiment with your make-up! WHITE/PEACHY CREAM White eyeliners can do so much and are a great addition to your make-up bag. Use on the bottom waterline to open up the eyes making them look bigger – swap this with your usual black liner and blend in some dark brown tones over the bottom of the eyelid and under the eye for big, sultry eyes without lots of eyeliner. It works wonders on brows too, by adding a little under the arch of the brow bone it’ll highlight and enhance the shape of the brow. This can also be achieved with concealer, just make sure it’s blended in. White and peachy tones can also be used on the lips for a nude look – this will work great with a dark purple smokey eye to land right on trend.

ORANGE

‘Radiant Orchid’ is the official colour of year 2014 and works great on eyes, lips and nails. The lilac tones are a lot softer and will work on most skin tones and ages. Matte colours on the eyes will give a soft, toned feel but go bolder on the lips for a little edge. A darker purple shade blended in the eye crease will give a subtle depth – try Shadowy Lady or Fig 1 by MAC.

MAC’s new Kelly Osbourne range has THE purple lipstick. Call Voisins in Jersey for your MAC fix and they’ll post to Guernsey for just £3.50! Butter nail varnish in molly cuddled is perfect; add Nails Inc top coats for a long lasting finish. Choose from matte or high shine finishes to change up your look. Both available from allbeauty.com

BLUE Bright orange lips are huge this summer! Don’t be scared of the bold tones, just a little smudged into the lips work for a more subtle look or go all out with a strong matching lip liner to really make it pop.

A throwback to the nineties no make-up bronzed look is the way forward this summer for those who want a less made-up look. Dior’s self-tanning bronzer achieves this perfectly. Start with small amounts and build up to make sure the shade doesn’t go over the top. Wear this with a highlighter just above the cheekbone and under the eye for a flawless beach babe look. Add white eyeliner and a smidgen of mascara on the top lashes and build up the eyebrows for a fresh modern look with a nod to the nineties.

64

PURPLE

Blue make-up can force a shudder to those who wore it in the eighties, but using the right shades and applying properly can have a great effect. It’s all over the catwalk too! Electric blue eyeliners work well with any look to give an updated, modern twist. Urban Decays ‘Electric’ palette has two bold blue shades for the more daring – the other shades are perfect for a Brazil inspired ‘world cup’ look. Go bold! It only comes round every four years!

DJ BBQ

The summer is here and what better way to kick-start the celebrations than with the biggest BBQ Chef on the planet. DJ BBQ (Christian Stevenson) has won BAFTA’s, DJ’d for Bill Gates and now he’s a best selling author. It was only a matter of time before Jamie Oliver called him up to share his skills with a new book – The DJ BBQ Book, which has gone straight to the top of the sales charts. Say goodbye to sad burnt sausages and hello to Bodacious burgers and Rad Rum Ribs!

Gallery Magazine sat down with the one and only King of Meaty Treats to find out what makes him sizzle… Who is DJ BBQ? The better question is, “Who isn’t DJ BBQ?” DJ BBQ is a guy who likes to catertain. I cook beats and meats. I’m all about cooking on live fire; sweetwoods, hardwoods and charcoal. What is your average day? Crazy!!!! Monday I was hosting the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards for Scuzz. Steel Panther were the event hosts. Darth Vader (David Prowse) was there as was loads of legends like Joe Perry from Aerosmith, Black Stone Cherry, Michael Monroe from Hanoi Rocks, Dying Fetus, Orange Goblin, etc. Then yesterday I was working on a BBQ that was powered by a DJ Soundsystem. The flames reacted like an equalizer! Today I’m going crayfish hunting and Sunday I’m doing food demos and signing books. Everyday is a random adventure!

people; who is the most interesting person you’ve cooked for? Probably my kids. They are amazing and brutally honest! Tell us a little about your new book? How did it come about? Jamie Oliver said that I needed a TV show if I wanted to launch a cookbook. Then FoodTube went crazy and he got me a book deal with Penguin. Jamie wanted to test the waters to see if a digital platform like FoodTube could help with promoting the books. And it worked. My book went number 1 (on Amazon) the week it came out.

What are your plans for the summer/any events coming up? I’m doing a Pop-Up with Turner & George Butchery in Hyde Park for the first two weeks of July. Camp Bestival as well as The Big Feastival. This summer is going to be crazy with loads of things happening! What do you like to do in your spare time/how do you unwind? What is spare time? I try and go for a skate at my local bowl. Have you ever been to Guernsey? Nope, but I got some crew there. I really want to visit… Do you like BBQ’ing? Do you like music? Do you like to catertain? If the answer is yes to all three of these questions then you’ve just qualified to win our amazing prize!

GIVEAWAY

How long have you been doing this? I’ve been BBQ’n since I was eight years old and DJ’n since I was nineteen. Preferred music to cook to? I like all music. Funk, Soul, Rock, Indie, HipHop, Metal, Classic rock, future disco… whatever. But if I had to choose the perfect album to BBQ to...Kings of Leon’s debut, Youth and Young Manhood. How did you get into cooking? My father taught me how to BBQ from an early age. He learned from his father and so on. What is FOODTUBE and how did you get involved with Jamie Oliver? Foodtube is an original YouTube channel for food. We do live shows, recipes, cooking hints, tips, and techniques. It’s now the number one network in Europe. Third in the entire planet! Not bad for only launching 18 months ago. I met Jamie as a DJ at his 15 minute meals book launch party. We approve of the LYCRA – where do you get them? My lycra catsuits are handcrafted and designed by the one and only Alice Vandy. What is the strangest place you’ve cooked? Probably in a 1976 School Bus that I used to live in. We made snowboarding movies in the 90’s and for a film called Day Tripper, we travelled around the planet in that school bus. We know you’ve cooked for a lot of BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

What is your favourite dish from your new book? It’s got to be my Dad’s Iowa Flank Steak. It reminds me of home. I love the flavours from the marinade. Do you have any tips for the perfect BBQ? Set up your BBQ for the indirect method. This way you have safety zones where you have no charcoal and direct heat under your meat. It’s all about goofproofing your cooking.

FOOD REVIEW: DEERHOUND

This months dining review was enjoyed at the Deerhound Inn; a country farmhouse restaurant filled with character, a brilliant menu and cracking service.

DINNER, DEER?

T

here is an undefined ambience as soon as you walk through the door to the Deerhound Inn that invites relaxation and conversation. A generous background buzz of laughing and chatter from the other diners improved the eating experience. Fun and thoroughly enjoyable.

We were greeted and made to feel welcome immediately (as were all the guests after and during our arrival) and promptly shown to our table where the standard drinks orders were taken. The floor-space is arranged so that there is plenty of light without grand open spaces and where the rustic tones of traditional countryside dining blend naturally into a contemporary finish. The outside terrace and grand pergola installation to the rear of the Deerhound Inn was inviting, sheltered and primed for intimate dates, larger groups (private parties are welcomed because of the amount of space) or family dining. Diners who choose to enjoy meals outside are flanked by bright patches of vibrant blooming flowers and strategically placed hanging baskets, with numerous outdoor heaters to provide additional warmth, the inclusion of which spurred great nostalgia – as if we were back on our favourite French vista.

The wine list is worth a mention, with notes for wines complimenting certain foods and special lists to accompany the Summer Seafood Menu. The only thing missing outside with my cold glass of beer was sand beneath my feet and the sound of the sea. We started with prawns and sweet chilli with slivers of garlic bread, all prepared fresh which reflected in the taste. Main orders consisted of Fresh Guernsey Crab Spaghetti with chilli, garlic and capers tossed in olive oil from the Summer Menu. The portion size was exactly right, the seasoning was balanced, the crabmeat was juicy but not overpowering and the plate was devoured enthusiastically. It took preference over other the other delightful choices from the Summer seafood menu, which included the Char-grilled Tuna Steaks, Fresh Salmon and Smoked Haddock chowders served with Irish Wheaten and Poached scallops with asparagus in a light Guernsey cream and basil sauce. I had sampled the burgers before and knew the fresh homemade tower of beef (locally sourced meats from Jason Hamon at Forest Stores) was a hunger killer. In a bid to diversify, I chose the large plate, mammoth rack BBQ ribs, wrapped in a warm tangy blanket of the house BBQ sauce. The meat was perfectly cooked and fell from the bone and a healthy side of skinny fires complimented the entire feed.

The large portion was the perfect fuel for my gargantuan hunger but the small plate option would have likely sufficed! Desserts were just as enjoyable and we feasted on American Waffles with toffee icecream and the Tiramisu Gateau. We took our time with the last course and finished off the calm summer evening outside with a post-dinner coffee under the flowered pergola. An immensely calm space during our mid-evening dine that contrasted to the happy hum emanating from indoors. We recommend the Deerhound Inn if you enjoy sharp service and well prepared food. Summer specials are in abundance and diners are definitely spoiled with their locally sourced meat policy and extensive wine list. The standard menu is also imaginative and varied. This family friendly restaurant is a prime location for lunching and all-week dining. It’s well priced, serves perfect portions for the hungry or the diet conscious and delivers with super efficient service. It’s a drive and dine restaurant so if you want to sample its charms don’t leave it too late (or you’ll have to wait). Lunch: 12pm – 2pm Monday to Saturday Dinner: 6pm – 9pm Sunday lunch: 12pm – 2.30pm

BREWING UP A STORM

THE STORY BEGINS, AS MANY STORIES DO, WITH A DRINK. Words by Louise Le Pelley

W

hen Jack GervaiseBrazier and Ross Gledhill arranged to meet up and have a chat over a drink at Christies, little did they know that they would find themselves a few months later as “two young guys in an industrial unit at South Side,” building Guernsey’s first ever Micro Brewery and putting the finishing touches to two brand new local craft beers.

Many men dream of having beer on tap and for these two entrepreneurs, the dream has become a reality thanks to the creation of the White Rock Brewery Co. The first two craft beers, bearing the tongue-in-cheek and distinctly Guernsey brand names of ‘Wonky Donkey’ and ‘Lost Tourist’ are now available in over 22 places over the island.

Ross Gledhill began experimenting with brewing as a student at University – at first because it was cheaper than going to the pub, however his experimental student pastime quickly turned into a passion. His knowledge and flair for the operational running of the Brewery paired with Jack’s entrepreneurial business knowledge (having spent ten years working in investment and owning his own recruitment company in London) is a winning combination - over 12,000 pints had sold by the end of March 2014, with an 80% increase in sales month on month. The Cornerstone at 2 La Tour Beauregard (CAMRA – that’s the Campaign for Real Ale - Bailiwick of Guernsey’s Pub of the year 2013) was the first establishment to stock Wonky Donkey (a ‘New Age Best Bitter’) – with 70 pints being sold in the first 45 minutes of its release. At the Herm Beer and Cider festival, which took place in early June, White Rock’s ‘Wonky Donkey’ was the first cask to sell out. It is evident that there is a demand for the ales – it seems as if the people of Guernsey are embracing these local products, brewed with passion and pizzazz, wholeheartedly. The Brewery is even starting to get requests online from tourists and overseas ale connoisseurs, who are keen to sample these elusive craft beers that can only currently be found on Channel Island shores.

twitter, with a streamlined and sophisticated website (designed by local advertising company Betley Whitehorne) currently in development. The business runs 24/7, with flexible delivery times available. If you have a sudden craving for a cask of Wonky Donkey on a Sunday afternoon, you can guarantee that the team at White Rock Brewery Co. will be able to meet your demands. Jack admits that the team is not short of enthusiasm… especially when it comes to meeting ad hoc requests! Although Jack and Ross are looking to expand the business, with future plans including the installation of a bottling plant and exporting their products to Jersey, plans for the summer include the development of seasonal ale and providing casks to local events such as the annual Chaos Festival. Looking to experiment with local produce such as brambles and honey in future recipes, both Jack and Ross believe that Guernsey has fantastic resources that should be promoted and used as much as possible. They are genuinely interested to hear what the public are craving with regards to the craft beer market and with access to both UK and New World hops, given a month’s notice, the team at White Rock Brewery Co. can even work with clients in order to produce a beer to their personal tastes. Ideas to develop beers to commemorate local events are already in the pipeline. In fact, on the 21st June 2014, the White Rock Brewery launched their first charity ale in honour of Ellie Carey – all proceeds from the night will be applied to the Eleanor Foundation shallow well programme in Kagera Province, Tanzania. We can only see this impressive business going from strength to strength (if you’ll excuse the pun) - and look forward to seeing many new brews, on tap and bottled, being introduced to Guernsey over the coming years.

As a business, the White Rock Brewery Co. continues to learn, develop and grow. Money generated is re-invested into the business and feedback from the public is actively being sought out via Facebook and

ARCHITECTURE

Why ‘modern’ architecture is not just glass boxes.

‘Modern’ is often misconstrued as an architectural style, when in fact the word simply means current and up to date. It is architecture that is designed to suit the progressive nature of our lives, informed by the way we inhabit and use the spaces between. It is also a design approach that utilises the latest technologies to effortlessly integrate them with our everyday life and produce buildings with a reduced environmental footprint. It explores new ways of using materials and creating a tactile and aesthetic contrast between finishes. ‘Current’ architecture should challenge the way things are done, embrace new ideas and progress as we do.

72

The way people live has changed, and buildings must evolve to support this whilst remaining adaptable to the further changes we will go through. Open plan living space is simply a response to modern family life and promotes social interaction in a world where it is all too easy to lock oneself away in front of a computer screen. In the past, houses were designed with multiple smaller un-insulated rooms and small single glazed windows that were quicker to heat and minimised the heat loss. With readily available modern products, large open spaces can be heated and ventilated efficiently and heat loss through high performance glazing is negligible when offset against the energy benefits of solar gain and natural light. As important as open and clutter free multi use space is, it is also necessary to balance this with smaller more intimate breakaway spaces, and ample storage for our possession-rich generation.

There are countless technical solutions currently available to build more efficient homes including high performing insulations, mechanical ventilation, low energy heat source and other renewable energy generators, but also many traditional ways that are often overlooked. Simply orientating a building and locating glazed elements and dense thermal mass to benefit from the natural path of the sun, can provide your heating requirements year round through solar gain. The buildings form and massing can enhance this further, maximising the thermal efficiency and optimising passive ventilation. Informed spatial planning will also give the user better control of the various zones of the building and eliminates the energy demands and construction of unused space. >>

“Guernsey is often criticised for being anti-change, but in truth it is advancing at a very fast pace due to the support of the Islanders. I feel it is my role as part of the construction industry to stay ahead of this and provide the most ‘up to date’ built environment for this development to flourish”. Dave De La Mare The advancement in technology over the past decade should be recognised in all new construction. Our local regulations are far more relaxed in some key areas than those of many other parts of the world, and so it is our responsibility to ensure that we are surpassing these and achieving the very best we can to build for our future. I think ‘Modern’ architecture should challenge convention; it is about utilising everyday materials in different ways. This can be achieved using traditional materials with a more refined approach to the finish, new products in contrast to established detail, or just in a way that new machinery allows that material to perform differently. A polished structural concrete slab provides a seamless and robust floor with limitless available aggregates and coloured toppings, however it is far more than just a finish. It is insulated below with integrated services, heating and structure within, meaning the slab itself can become the floor finish. The thermal mass of this floor means it retains heat for far longer giving a more stable and controlled ambient temperature and eliminates further material and labour during construction. In essence, this single design intervention reduces construction time, cost and energy use. Detailed finishes can be manipulated to create variation and interest whilst maintaining the same beneficial properties that the material inherently holds. A reinforced concrete wall cast against timber planks visually softens an inherently hard material and gives it scale, however it is honest to its construction creating a feature and eliminating the need for further finishes.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Guernsey is often criticised for being anti-change, but in truth it is advancing at a very fast pace due to the support of the Islanders. I feel it is my role as part of the construction industry to stay ahead of this and provide the most ‘up to date’ built environment for this development to flourish. Encouraging a sustainable future does not just mean efficient low energy buildings, but also designing buildings that can adapt to meet our differing needs and accepting that things need to progress. Architecture must respond to the current and anticipated needs of the users with an honest balance between performance and aesthetic, but most importantly, it must continue to move forward and test the unknown.

Claire’s new homegrown business ‘Simply Bespoke’ is all about helping others create a comfortable lived in looked, often full of perfect imperfections. “I inherited a love of all things antique from my mother, and a childhood spent visiting antique and junk shops in the Cotswolds. There is a distinct smell in these places that still gives me butterflies as you never know what delightful find you’re going to uncover. Today my passion is in styling and sourcing furniture or artefacts to finish off a space or room, including children’s bedrooms. I often distress pieces or upholster to achieve the desired effect. These pieces show, you don’t have to spend a fortune to give a room a unique and comfortable feel.” We asked Claire to create a mood board of pieces to fill a living space with her personal touch.

or the past 10 years, Stonetech has been supplying Guernsey with premier natural stone products and services. Now they’re bringing into the limelight the most innovative and contemporary sink and tap designs. Whatever you’ve imagined the ideal kitchen to look like, Stonetech are promising to meet and surpass your ideas and expectations. Precision, perfection, superior quality and style - Stonetech’s mantra ticks all the boxes. When I arrived to meet Mark, Stonetech’s owner, outside the Vale based workshop and showroom he is instantly welcoming. He imediately comes across as a super skilled and hard-working individual, passionate about his work and customers. He enjoys talking about the latest technology in carving tools and machinery, especially his newest ‘toy’: a Breton NC 250 . This is a machine so efficient that it will sculpt the most daring shaped worktop in no more than 2 hours. When I asked whether I could have a star shaped marble kitchen worktop, Mark smiles ‘Stars, hearts, even the shape of Guernsey, whatever you have in mind, we will do our best to recreate your idea.’ Before the Breton NC changed his life, Mark used to cut the stone traditionally. Now, with the help of his new machinery and a computer, he can concentrate on polishing the stone by hand into the desired finish. ‘This machine does it all. It’s like the Rolls Royce of all stone cutting machines - really good, and really reliable. The work I used to do in 3 hours before, I can now complete in no more than 20 minutes.’ Stonetech has the ability to design the most sophisticated and elegant kitchen worktop stations. For the romantic, vintage

and antique lovers, they will soon have a machine called The Beaver in the workshop. Mark tells us about it; ‘You hold it on the edge of the stone and all it does is nibble, giving a well done, chipped look all around the edges’. This unpolished, natural looking effect will only be found with Stonetech. Not only in Guernsey but across the whole of the British Isles.

When I asked whether I could have a star shaped marble kitchen worktop, Mark smiles; ‘Stars, hearts, even the shape of Guernsey, whatever you have in mind, we will do our best to recreate your idea.’

In order to meet the high standards of the brand, Stonetech has started a fruitful collaboration with the internationally acclaimed British brand, 1810. The company is renowned for providing the best quality stainless steel products, which are metallurgically incapable of rusting or corroding in normal household conditions. Moreover, the taps are all fitted with a Neoperl aerator, a new innovative fitting which will provide a non-splash, creamy water flow. Taps have a warranty of 2 years, while all sinks have an excellent warranty of 75 years (yes, it does sound like a lifetime guarantee to us!). Stonetech are also looking to remove the kettle from your daily routine. The company will soon be stocking the latest tea-making technology: boiling water kettle taps. The water will be delivered at a constant 98 degrees temperature. Your perfect cuppa, instantly, without having to see the kettle again. If you’re thinking of a specific tap, such as the abstract, square mono-bloc model or

a comfortable and stylish pull out spray tap, Stonetech will have sinks and taps to meet every preference, design style and budget. Whether you’re redesigning your old kitchen, moving to a new home or simply wanting to replace your sink or tap, Mark is happy to find the perfect package to suit. ‘I can advise my client exactly what sinks will fit in their base units, or I can recommend products according to certain factors; for example, a big family who do a lot of cooking, will be best going for a 3 compartment sink’. You will have no less than 45 durable, insulated sinks to choose from and 21 taps. ‘We currently have a small showroom available, but we are working on the eight display showroom to be complete in the next few months.’ Until then, you might want to head down in person, so that you can ‘see the colours for yourself and feel the materials’ with Mark’s advice. He can furnish you with a full product catalogue with close up images, from which you can work together with the experts on a custom one-of-a-kind kitchen. As far as kitchens go, Stonetech is bringing you a tactile future and a ‘quality carved in stone’. Towards the end of our interview I understood what made Mark’s work so special: his perfectionism, his passion for excellence and his determination in satisfying the most particular customer preference. ‘People should go for Stonetech because of good turnaround, honesty, workmenship, quick service, the best prices around and the fact it’s made locally’. GET THE BEST SLEEP CYCLE - CHOOSE LATEX!

How would you like a “mattress of champions”. Did you ever consider your matress could have a code name such as NLX200R?! Latexco, although maybe a new name for many, is the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of latex foam for the bedding industry. Thanks to Latexco’s new patented process, the latex components are made with 100% latex foam, which guarantees pure latex comfort. Latexco latex foam does not cause allergies either.. In the production process, Latexco ‘vulcanize’ the natural latex, exposing it to high temperatures, eliminating the proteins in the untreated latex which can cause a contact or respiratory type allergy. Many will compare the benefits with Memory foam. However, memory foam is sensitive to your body temperature, shape and weight, whereas latex is not temperature sensitive and therefore gives you instant comfort and support. On average, you will turn between 30 and 60 times a night. The natural elasticity and ‘bounce’ in latex means less effort is needed to turn during sleep, helping to cause less disturbance in your sleeping patterns and conserving your energy levels so you awake feeling more rested and energised.

POLISHED PLASTERS

Interior designers and architects have fallen in love with Venetian marble polished plaster and recognize it as a choice of decoration for an alternative to today’s repetitive off the shelf look. Far more than simply a painter or a plasterer, Steven Glass is a Master Decorator – an artisan bringing the stunning techniques of Italian Stucco Veneziano (Venetian plaster) to modern & traditional Guernsey architecture. You may not consider the extensive range of specialist plasters - textured plasters that create beautiful antique or rustic effects. Or gold and metallic plasters, or with a pearl sheen? You can create a finish that resembles stone or polished marble. Marrying authenticity with originality and working intimately with architects, builders and designers – Surface ‘creates innovative solutions for each unique project’. One exciting product is ‘Tadelakt’ polished plaster, a specialized finish created in morocco and used extensively in their ‘hammam’ spas and Bathrooms. Architects have now come to explore this product as a viable alternative to tiles. Totally waterproof it can be used throughout the bathroom and shower area to create a seamless, timeless, bathing sanctuary!

PROFILE: RIHOY&SONS

STANDING THE TEST OF TIME Rihoy & Son, one of Guernsey’s longest established building contractors; family owned and run for the past 90 years, has been involved with some of the island’s largest and most prestigious housing developments.

H

aving established effective partnerships with commercial developers and social housing providers, such as the Guernsey Housing Association, the firm has worked to create a wide range of homes. From One, St Julian’s Avenue with 29 luxury one, two and three-bedroom Local Market apartments and three Open Market penthouses, to 80 properties at Rue Jamouneau, which marks the culmination of the regeneration of the old social housing estates in the Bouet, Rihoy & Son is leading the construction industry; the fourth largest contributor to the island’s economic wellbeing. Rihoy & Son, which has 180-plus staff, is the main contractor on One, St Julian’s Avenue. The development has not only seen a significant increase in quality housing stock in a previously underused site in the centre of Town, but it has also provided employment and much needed turnover for those involved, including the main subcontractors.

84

One, St Julian’s Avenue is in its final stage of construction. Rihoy & Son is currently working on the internal fit out of the former Vauxlaurens Brewery site, which forms the majority of the landmark development’s final phase. Each apartment and penthouse has been designed to the highest standards with modern touches and underground car parking with lift access to all apartments. The development will also be one of the very first in Guernsey to offer superfast fibre broadband throughout. Not only has the project made good use of an underutilised site in the island it is also in tune with today’s modern way of living; providing comfortable low maintenance accommodation a short walk from the centre of Town and the heart of the financial services district. Externally, the original 19th century façade has been retained and the courtyard boasts brick arches to create the warehouse

character of the development. The project is set to be complete at the end of July 2014. Rihoy & Son was the first contractor in Guernsey to attain Chartered Building Company status in 2001. The company joined 312 other British companies in the scheme, which is run by the Chartered Institute of Building. Rihoy & Son’s most recent completion of a major housing project was Rue Jamouneau, a Guernsey Housing Association development in partnership with the Housing Department. The development was completed on time and within budget in May. The development is designed to accommodate a broad selection of residents, with 54 properties for rent and 26 for partial ownership. There is a range of dwelling types, from single bedroom flats to bungalows, through to four bedroom houses. These properties have been designed by local architects

to provide a pleasant and friendly environment to build community.

which the Guernsey Housing Association will pay back using rental income.

All of the properties are designed to ‘lifetime home’ standards and so cater for people with a wide range of needs. In particular, the 10 ground-floor apartments, seven bungalows and seven of the three-bedroom houses are designed for wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility.

It is just three years since the last property on the Bouet was demolished. Rihoy & Son has been instrumental in the development of this project. The firm built Rue Clouet, which was the first phase in the redevelopment of the Bouet housing estate. Rue Clouet was shortlisted for the People’s Choice Award at the Guernsey Design Awards 2014, one of 13 developments listed.

The development incorporates outdoor spaces to encourage community within the estate, with separate areas for school children to play with seating for supervising parents, teenagers to meet together and play basketball or football and an area for adults to sit and enjoy. Energy efficiency was paramount in the design of these properties; hot water and heating supported by solar panels, insulation levels that exceed current standards and air tightness values that make these properties cost effective to run while protecting the environment. It is intended that the design of the development will encourage those living in Rue Jamouneau and Rue Sarchet to form friendships and community in their new environment. The development is now fully occupied. Land and a grant from the Housing Department funded 30% of the total cost of the development. The remaining 70% was funded from a bank loan,

Rue Clouet, constructed for the Guernsey Housing Association, was an £8m. project and involved the building of 55 one and two bedroom modern housing units aimed at elderly residents. The flats were designed with a simple layout, with each unit having its own front door. Thermal and acoustic requirements surpass current building regulations, with each unit having high levels of insulation and solar panels. The inclusion of cobbles to slow traffic on the estate makes it pedestrian friendly, and a mixture of coloured render and timber cladding has created an interesting exterior design, which keeps maintenance to a minimum. Rihoy & Son’s largest project with the Guernsey Housing Association, Le Grand Courtil, is on track for the completion of Section One, Phase One, by October. The £25m. project, which will provide 84

units of extra care housing on the site of the former Longue Rue residential home, has required extremely careful planning due to its close proximity to the existing care home, which is still in operation. Good communication with the care team and neighbours has been the key to progress so far. As well as being the largest project Rihoy & Son has carried out for the Guernsey Housing Association, it is the most technical. Quality is good and so far the Guernsey Housing Association and end users are happy with the product. Rihoy & Son is responsible for coordinating the design and build elements of the project and construction has required the importation of a tower crane, with a 35-metre-long jib, from the UK. While Section One of Le Grand Courtil will be completed in its entirety by the start of October, the final six flats will be handed over at a later date. Work cannot begin on these until the old building has been completely demolished. For more information about Rihoy & Son visit jwrihoy.com or http://www. linkedin.com/company/jw-rihoy

What’s the biggest structural development you’ve been involved in?

What’s the biggest structural development you’ve been involved in?

I worked in Rome for a few years back in the early 00’s. There I was involved in a few large development projects including the Warner Brothers Roman HQ and a number of developments for the Vatican. Locally my biggest projects are very large private local and open market homes.

What’s the project you’re most proud of?

I spent a number of years as a general builder running a small outfit in the UK, during that time I was able to take projects the whole way from initial design through to built reality, and be hands-on throughout. I’ve got a sore back but have very fond memories of those days and I’d have to say that those projects I’ve designed and then physically built myself are some of my favourites. My first hands-on project of note was in London in 2000. A cool experimental home which went on to be featured on Grand Designs and won numerous awards; I was the Site Foreman and onsite designer and got to work with a number of great collaborators to make it happen. The Grand Designs link remains my main claim to TV stardom, the house is still owned and loved by the same client who’s now a close friend, so it remains a part of my life. At the end of this period I designed and built a large contemporary extension to a 16th Century Guernsey farmhouse for my parents, seven years later it’s still a great success and the nerd in me finds it very interesting to monitor the building’s performance every-time I nip round for a coffee.

What’s your favourite building?

There are far too many great buildings to pick just one! The building which first caught my attention as a teenager was the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, but I love Palladio’s classical designs, the Modernist Eames House, the work of FAT and the work of Anupama Kundoo (who I think describes herself as an ‘organic modernist’…!) I’m an architectural chameleon and proud, I think a successful building is one which responds to its context and the client’s unique brief, not a style per se, that’s very much the ethos of the practice.

What’s your favourite architectural city?

It’s a cliché, but you can’t go wrong with the eternal city of Roma! Not just the great piazzas, landmark buildings and higgledypiggledy atmospheric historic centre but the suburbs and lesser known areas like the EUR and San Lorenzo too.

What are your plans for the future?

Mainly to ensure that CCD has another 30 years of success ahead! We have a great team and fantastic clients, we’re always looking to make use of the most advanced tools and techniques and I hope this impresses our clients and keeps our staff excited by the great variety of work that we undertake.

What advice would you give to would-be architects?

Do it! It’s a long road to qualify (minimum 7 years) but a hugely rewarding and satisfying profession to be in. I think it helps if you have a desire to innovate or change things around you. A wild imagination is critical but architecture isn’t pure art so you have to have a pragmatic/professional side too. The downside, it you can call it that, is that it does take over your life.

What would be your dream project locally?

All architects have a little Socialist within them so I’d love to do a social housing development. The parameters are especially tight on this sort of project so I’d relish the challenge. Other than that I’ve always wanted to design a brewery (I’m delighted to say I’ve recently been commissioned to do exactly that! Although off island.) I’d also love to do a Museum, I think in the world of civic architecture that’s the pinnacle for any Architect. A spiritual/ religious space would also be a wonderful challenge. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

In 2006 I was extremely proud to have the opportunity to oversee the repairs to the 1466 South Transept & Spire roofs at Town Church. We shrouded the entire spire completely with scaffolding to repair the late medieval roof timbers and conserve the 1721 leadwork. For over 30 years our Practice has looked after the Town Church with Andrew Dyke, the late Nigel Cresswell, and Tim Cuttle before me, and I am thrilled to continue this legacy.

What’s the project you’re most proud of?

The restoration of the 15th C farm house at Les Caches for the National Trust. A very rare chance to ‘restore’ a building to how it would have looked around 1800, using traditional techniques and materials, such as wattle & daub, thatch and clay dug from the bottom of the site (now forming a natural pond teeming with wildlife).

What’s your favourite building?

La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona - over 130 years and still under construction! A truly fascinating piece of architecture on so many levels.

What is your favourite architectural city?

I have a real affinity with Edinburgh and my wife and I return as regularly as we can. It is such a unique place - the juxtaposition of the medieval Old Town, which has organically evolved down the natural hillside from the castle, and the formal layout of the Georgian New Town is so striking.

What are your plans for the future?

To carry on advising on Guernsey’s important historic building stock and to continue our successful practice.

What advice would you give to would-be architects/surveyors?

Learn how to be a good photographer, always carry a camera and a sketchbook around with you and really ‘look’ at buildings.. Try to think about what is behind the façade of a building and how is it constructed.

What would be your dream project locally?

A bunker conversion would be fun. We are going to have to start considering the conservation of our German Occupation structures soon, although they were very well built some are deteriorating too quickly! It does bring up an interesting philosophical debate.

My first hands-on project of note was in London in 2000. A cool experimental home which went on to be featured on Grand Designs and won numerous awards; I was the Site Foreman and on-site designer and got to work with a number of great collaborators to make it happen. WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU TAKE 3250 PIECES OF LEGO, FIFTY GALLERY MAGAZINES AND FIVE TALENTED GUERNSEY ARCHITECTS? SOME VERY INTERESTING CREATIONS ESPECIALLY FOR THIS MONTHS BUILD ISSUE! WE CHALLENGED A SELECT GROUP OF CLEVER TYPES TO DESIGN AND BUILD A STRUCTURE BETWEEN TWO GLORIOUS STACKS OF GALLERY MAGAZINE TO SHOWCASE THEIR SKILLS. THERE WERE NO LIMITATIONS TO THEIR CREATIVITY OR STYLE AND HERE’S WHAT THEY PRODUCED…

Our challenge was to create a structure that would span between two piles of Gallery magazines, stacked 5 copies high. This seemed like an easy task at first but upon open the box of 640 Lego pieces, it soon became clear that it was going to be far from easy. Normally, a Lego structure would start with a square large base, but this box contained multi-coloured, random sized pieces and no base! The most obvious choice of a structure was a bridge, but a bridge is just too simple. We needed to expand on that idea and create an unique and unusual structure. But, with no instructions, this was going to have to evolve brick by brick. All the bricks would have to be separated into their different sizes and colours. After a bit of trial and error, the pieces were placed one by one, starting as a few supporting columns and slowly turning into a perfectly symmetrical structure. The end result is Lego structure that came out of pure imagination and acceptance of no limitations. The biggest challenge we faced was creating something that was colour coordinated, not just a random mess!. Our structure demonstrates that with a bit of creative thinking, the impossible is possible.

Every proposal should develop beyond the given brief and maximise the available potential. Architecture has no set formula; every project and every site is different and the design should respond to its location and orientation. The outlook and spaces between are as important as the building fabric in how we perceive a space and how it makes us feel. The building is simply a means of shelter that guides you towards these spaces.

DLM Works model is a response to some of the first questions raised when looking at any new project: How can material be used differently to create interest, texture and benefit the structural integrity?

Lego has given children an understanding of construction for many years and will continue to for many more. The modular nature of the product means that it has never changed, and over the years the range has been added to in a way that allows it to do more. This echoes the construction industry and in the same way the basic blocks will continue to form the core structure.

COMPANY PROFILE: DLM Works is a chartered architecture practice established by local architect David De La Mare, who returned to the island two years ago to focus on high quality bespoke architecture. The objective is to offer a tailored one to one package to our clients by integrating a blend of experience across various scales, sectors and in several countries.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

What are its maximum capabilities and how does it perform most efficiently? How does it respond to its surroundings and orientation?

The practice is built on a complementary framework of architecture, product design and construction, generating innovative design and quality workmanship to create a positive impact on our lives and the environment. Our design is influenced by the way people inhabit the space and an understanding of how the proposed construction impacts the design at every level. Our services incorporate design, planning and building license applications, contract and project management and construction; easing communication to ensure no detail is overlooked between paper and production. If you’d like to meet to discuss any potential ideas please don’t hesitate to get in touch. info@dlmworks.com

TRAVEL

We didn’t want to go down the route of making a building or a bridge; I guess this would’ve been too obvious. Our model is the FIFA World Cup – one of the most iconic and easily recognizable objects. From the outset we tried to make it curved using the square blocks, just to add another element to the challenge. Four spirals support the gold globe, which represents the human figures on the actual trophy. We also played with the idea of a football scene, Brazil vs. Netherlands, using the Gallery magazines as a football stand. COMPANY PROFILE: SOUP Architects is a multi award winning boutique architecture and design practice with studios in London and Guernsey. Specialising in contemporary housing with a contextual modernism approach, we offer RIBA Chartered Practice services, working on projects in the UK, Channel Islands and France.

AGENDA INTRO

Guernsey’s innovative approach to

wealth management words : Fiona Le Poidevin, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance

T

he global financial crisis has precipitated some major changes in the wealth management industry. The developed economies have struggled to deliver growth and they have largely been outperformed by the emerging markets which are now the largest sources of new wealth. Indeed, saddled with debt and experiencing low growth, the governments of developed economies have taken measures to widen their tax net and boost revenues.

With these centres also mature in terms of the provision of wealth management services, the opportunities to provide asset protection, succession planning and tax planning are now much more niche. Guernsey has significant experience and expertise in establishing and administering trust, company and family office limited partnership structures as well as providing private banking services. However, the transforming environment is leading to a change in the way in which these are delivered. Fiona Le Poidevin is Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, the promotional agency for Guernsey’s finance industry. Her role includes business development and the promotion of Guernsey’s finance industry in the Island’s target markets including Europe, the US and the emerging markets, technical research to support promotional activities and liaison with industry associations and government. Previously a senior tax manager with a Big 4 accountancy firm, she has over 15 years’ experience working in financial services in both the UK and Guernsey. Miss Le Poidevin is a Chartered Accountant, a member of the Institute of Directors and holds the IoD Diploma in Company Direction.

At the same time, we are also innovating so that local practitioners have the widest range of tools at their disposal to meet the increasingly diverse needs of their clients. In the last 18 months, Guernsey has introduced foundations legislation, world-first image rights law and register, the first aircraft registry in the Channel Islands, known as the 2-REG, and a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) law. These developments mean that clients can increasingly use Guernsey as an all-encompassing hub for protecting and managing their assets and wealth. At the same time, government is also responding to external developments by ensuring that we do not put ourselves at a competitive disadvantage to other jurisdictions but we do sign up to meet international standards where there is a global level playing field. These are key messages that Guernsey Finance is conveying to those clients and their advisers who we meet when promoting the Island’s finance industry on the international stage. Indeed, as wealth creation shifts from the developed to the developing economies, so our work is increasingly global. Asia, the Middle East, Russia and Latin America are firmly on the radar and figures from the Guernsey Financial Services Commission show that during the last few years a growing proportion of private wealth business is coming from Asia and in particular, China. Yet, it is also critical to protect our traditional sources and especially the City of London which feeds us work from near and far. Guernsey has always been good at adapting and that is what we must continue to do if we are to remain successful in providing wealth management services in the future. Fiona Le Poidevin is the Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance – the promotional agency for the Island’s finance industry.

ONLINE BANKING

BANKING ON TECHNOLOGY

I

Racheal Coleman, Senior Bank Manager, NatWest, discusses the growth of mobile and online banking and the role of the High Street – ‘the best of both worlds’.

f you think back to how you did your banking 20 years ago and compare it to the present day, it's likely it has changed beyond all recognition. As technology has developed over time so NatWest has responded to the needs of customers to develop new and convenient ways of banking. At the core of this focus, we make sure our teams are in the right place at the right time and doing the right things to improve the customer experience. This means that whilst, customers are increasingly choosing to manage their finances on the go; the traditional high street branch network continues to play a significant role.

Digital

In a report by the British Bankers’ Association (BBA)1, mobile phone banking transactions made by British customers have nearly doubled in a single year, new industry figures compiled by the BBA show today. Customers are now making more than 5.7 million transactions a day using smart phones and other internetenabled technology.

96

At RBS Group in the UK, the busiest branch is now the ‘virtual’ one with over £30 million transferred every day through the mobile banking app. By placing the power to manage their money in their hands, mobile banking service is transforming the way our customers do their banking. At the touch of a button personal and business customers can check their balance, transfer money between accounts, view their transaction history or pay their contacts. Offshore NatWest was the first bank to provide mobile banking for smartphones. Since introducing an app for both personal and business customers, the Bank has continued to lead with innovations providing customers with choice and flexibility and today remains the only bank providing clients with a multi-currency app. Among the latest app features for personal customers is ‘Get Cash’ which enables customers to withdraw money without using their bank card at an ATM. The customer chooses the amount they wish to withdraw from the app and a secure cash code is sent to their phone which is then valid for three hours at any RBS Group cash machine.

GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE THE AGENDA SUPPLEMENT

With technology evolving the customer experience, how do these developments fit with branch based banking? Traditional Another new facility is the ‘Pay Your Contacts’ service which enables a customer to pay anyone with a Visa debit, credit or prepaid card using just their mobile number, even if they are not a bank customer. A revolutionary way of paying someone, it has countless uses; one of the more obvious is a quick and easy way of sending the money owed when splitting a bill with friends at a restaurant. The NatWest offshore app, which is available to customers with accounts held in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar, has been used in over 160 countries and had over 460,000 log ins in the last 30 days. Since the launch of the first mobile app in 2011, there have been two million transactions made using mobile devices. Since then, the bank has continued to lead with innovations providing customers with choice and flexibility and today remains the only bank providing clients with a multi-currency app.

A dedicated team answer customer queries through the webchat service offered within online banking and answer customer queries received through the Bank’s Channel Island Facebook and Twitter pages. Complementing mobile, is a preference towards social engagement. A dedicated team answer customer queries through the webchat service offered within online banking and answer customer queries received through the Bank’s Channel Island Facebook and Twitter pages. Social media provides a proactive role of providing feedback quickly. Across our social media accounts we engage with approximately 7,000 followers, focusing on their needs and providing excellent service. Over 77.5% of our most popular tweets relate to Helpful Banking advice for money management, how to bank on-the-go, security and saving tips.

The most important advantage of the digital revolution for the branch is that it has freed staff up so they can spend more time with customers when they need it in branch. Deloitte2 recently found elderly and retired people were the fastest adopters of digital services, bucking a perception that younger customers are fuelling the appetite for online banking platforms. By contrast younger people are increasingly meeting branch staff to discuss their financial needs. For business customers, the iPhone app enables them to easily access and manage their finances on the move. Their relationship manager is on hand when they need to talk through development plans and lending requirements and provide support through difficult decisions but the app gives them greater control of their money so they can focus their attention on running their business and serving customers.

Balance & Choice

It is this balance between mobile and traditional that is designed to give the customer the best of both worlds. There will always be a place for traditional banking, where branch and telephony teams and relationship managers are on hand to meet with customers and discuss their specific needs, for example whether may relate to a mortgage or account application or just a general question. However, for everyday transactions, banking has changed beyond recognition and technology is driving this trend. Our commitment will remain to serve customers through a wide range of channels and we will continue to invest in leading edge developments to enhance our proposition and our established branch network, which is by far the largest of any of its competitors across the Bailiwick. This year the bank is supporting customers on this journey with live demonstrations available in larger branches to walk through its mobile service proposition, providing customers with opportunities to learn about the mobile revolution and how the new services can be used, in combination with the branch to help our customers bank with us in the way most convenient to them. . Pop in to branch to find out how we are making banking easier!

BUSINESS BUZZWORDS

STAR T ER F OR TE N :

why the business buzzword is a thing of beauty A great man once said “if the business world is a club sandwich, then communication is its mayonnaise”. This is a maxim you can live by, although I wish he’d been clearer about whether bacon represents middle management and if lettuce is human resources. You can’t always count on the same sandwich being on the menu in the global business environment, but one thing you can be sure of is that the best way to communicate with staff, clients and customers alike is through the new international language of the buzzword. Along with its brothers, the confusing acronym (KYC; TIM WOODS; BDSA) and the meaningless metaphor, the buzzword has exploded out of the box and gone viral on a global scale. It’s a new paradigm for the corporate knowledge base that will soon replace old fashioned-language - that legacy system with its outdated last-gen reliance on concepts like “meaning” and “subtlety.” The buzzword is bleeding-edge, bespoke and best-of-breed - we’re already in linguistic beast mode and that’s before we’re even halfway through the alphabet. If you’re a change champion with efficiency in your DNA, then I’ve no doubt I’m preaching to the choir. We aren’t just singing from the same hymn sheet, we photocopied the hymn sheet, locked the doors and handed it out at a team meeting before anybody had a chance to get coffee or investigate why the building was on fire. That’s why it breaks my heart when any organisation isn’t on the same page - I care so much I cry myself to sleep when failing to secure buy-in from one-change resistant stakeholder results in a beautiful project being kicked into the long grass. If a passion for communications is your core competency, then you’ll recognise a lot of what I’m saying. If not, why not run a few of these learnings up the flagpole and see which way the wind’s blowing?

Shoot leaves and eat: why the buzzword is above the rules of language

Some people use language as a way of describing ideas, actions and physical objects. This is fine if you’re writing poetry or designing a bridge, but William Shakespeare or Isambard Kingdom Brunel were probably never tasked with lifting morale following an especially tense Q2 compliance audit. Shakespeare wrote most of his plays himself, and therefore had no need to inspire his team to give 110%, 24/7, 365. Also, Excel wasn’t even invented then. No, these guys were strictly focussed on the low-hanging fruit, so they never learned what a game-changer it can be to arbitrarily mis-use words to make a situation sound more complicated or critical than it really is. Suddenly turn a noun into a verb and you’re already thinking outside the box;

98

use five words when one will do and you’ve filled up the empty spaces in somebody’s brain with your total commitment to the vision. Action this, task that, impact those - if you bend the laws of language people will soon understand that you’re like a tiger in the jungle, a shark in the ocean - an apex predator. If you stop moving goalposts you die, and the law of the jungle is up-skill or go hungry.

your staff, as a boss should be like a doctor or scientist in that people will respect you more if they never quite understand exactly what you’re talking about. It’s also far quicker to master the language of corporate doublespeak than it is to become a real expert in anything. You don’t get to the top by being an expert in anything other than getting to the top. I think Bruce Lee said that, although it could just as easily have been Rusty Lee or Dave Lee Travis. Finding solutions identifies problems

As a corporate consultant, I do a lot of good in the world by helping people perceive problems that without me they never would have realised existed. Sometimes this is inefficiencies in a supply chain, sometimes it’s not enough managers and too many people being paid to work rather than think. Language is important here, because until you have modern-sounding jargon to describe a problem it might as well not exist. Likewise, if you haven’t got the right language to describe the future you want, it might never happen. Very zen. I’ll leave it up to you how to leverage this particular advice, but a wise man once said “death is only in the mind. I call it end-of-play”.

Buzzwords add action and excitement to everyday life

Using language to describe things accurately is all well and good, but sometimes you need to motivate people in a way that facts and objectivity just can’t deliver. That’s when a skill-set full of buzzwords and colourful, inappropriate metaphors is your secret weapon. Want more detailed analysis of the figures? Boring! Tell people you want to ‘drill down’ and you make them think those productivity stats are a rich seam of resources hidden deep beneath the earth. Money is always in a pot. Don’t tell people things, cascade them. Don’t give people a reason to do something, incentivise them. Don’t tell them what you want, give them a steer. I promise you, making language sound constantly exciting doesn’t just energise your people going forward, it forces them to internalise your mental language of success. It’s how great organisations become world-class, and also how Charles Manson inspired his followers to kill all those people in the 60s.

Jargon: because everybody likes to think they’re dealing with an expert

I cut my teeth in marketing, and if there’s one thing I understand it’s that making clients think you know what you’re talking about is more important than actual knowledge. People love to feel like another person has everything under control, something understood by all great leaders, like Steve Jobs, Donald Trump and Pol Pot. This is just as important when addressing

Every sentence must inspire the people around you

If we all had blue-sky thinking in our skillset then the world would run like clockwork. There would be no silos to break down, and all ducks would already be in a row. It sounds like paradise. Unfortunately we live in the real world, a world where not everybody is a team player. You can either give up, and accept that your total dedication to mission sets you apart from the common man, or you can be an evangelist and try and take the people with you, like Jesus of Nazareth or Tom Cruise. You just need to understand that every opportunity to communicate is also one to motivate, and that inspirational posters, “thought for the day” emails and daily team pep talks are just one part of a 360 degree, holistic approach to the total inspiration of your co-workers. If you ever see anybody flagging in their commitment, and you’ve already gone down the HR route, chain them up in the basement over the weekend with the annual business plan PowerPoint on loop. By the time you get back online the following Monday, to touch base and give them some quality face-time, they’ll be as happy to see you as a dog you’ve just let out of a hot car. At the end of the day, there’s no I in “freedom”. JERSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE THE AGENDA SUPPLEMENT

BUSINESS BUZZWORDS

Like a boss...

Gallery’s handy A to Z of management terminology WORDS Marcus Halberstam

The international stock photo people longest thumb award goes to.....

A Action D

Deliverables

E

Escalate

Sometimes simply telling somebody to “do” something isn’t exciting and dynamic enough. You’re not just the regional sales manager asking somebody to finish a spreadsheet, you’re the director of the next Avengers movie ordering Scarlett Johansson to dial it up a notch in the catsuit department

B...............Best practice

Translates as “any and all practice that doesn’t involve anybody being fired or the office blowing up”. Nobody ever talks about “second best practice” in their annual report, although in many cases this would far be more truthful

C

Cascade

“I can’t be bothered to tell everybody myself, so I’m telling you to tell somebody else to tell them. Please action that.”

100

An intangible category of things that can be actioned, synergized and leveraged. Beware, stranger - this is wizard’s language! Stay well away unless you too are a giant wand

Only meaningful in the sense that it is the precise opposite of “cascade” - “I’m telling you to tell somebody to tell the boss. Pardon me whilst I draft my excuses and clock off before you get out of his office with an executive stress toy wedged up your accounts receivable”

F

Fire fighting

Not literally fighting real fires, as that would constitute a health and safety issue. Instead used to conjure up the image of strapping, swarthy men in uniform facing mortal danger, except to describe a process that involves a team leader providing excuses over email to explain why a project is slightly late

G........... Going forward

Few people understand that this annoying phrase is actually a profound metaphor that skirts existentialist philosophy, Eastern mysticism and Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time, all of which your boss has definitely read and understood 110%. “We will do this thing (either leveraged or synergized) onwards from all points that are not the present moment, because time is but an illusion and we are all stardust. Om.”

H Headcount

The word “employees” makes many managers uncomfortable, as it implies real human beings with feelings, families and a pension entitlement. Instead “headcount” is something you’d use to describe cattle, prisoners or bodies after an earthquake

JERSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE THE AGENDA SUPPLEMENT

I Incentivise O Outcomes U Utilize Essential for all those times when using the word “encourage” doesn’t make you sound enough like somebody who experiments on caged animals for a living

This generally means “results,” but in a way that somehow implies that any negative ones were not the responsibility of the speaker

J...... Joined up thinking P............ Paradigm shift Any kind of thinking that incorporates basic logic and doesn’t involve you making terrible decisions without informing your manager. A generally useful skill, unless you work for a company that only produces clown cars and experimental jazz

K KYC

A brand of bottom lubricant you’ll need if you didn’t bother to check the veracity of that photocopied Nigerian passport

L Leverage

Meaningful only in the world of physics. In the office, “leverage” is merely another alternative to “use” for men in expensive suits who are charging by the hour to teach middle management how to use words like “leverage”

M Milestones

“Tremble, adventurer, for beyond this point there is no turning back! Congratulations, thou hast successfully negotiated a maintenance contract for the purchase of our new photocopier. Your name will be recorded in the project management minutes so that future generations may know thy bravery”

N..... Not invented here

“Something else does the job we want perfectly well, but if we adopted it we wouldn’t be able to keep ourselves busy inventing an alternative that offers half the functionality at twice the price.”

Snazzy phrase used by people who struggle to understand that evolution and change are not just buzzwords to slide into the annual report, but rather the natural order of things and the way that all intellectual development is made possible. Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity was a paradigm shift, your plan to bill clients monthly rather than quarterly is not

Note the American spelling. “Utilized” is for those situations when saying you would “use” something doesn’t make you sound enough like a scientist telling Jeff Goldblum how to blow up an alien spaceship with the pornography on his laptop

V Viral

this originally meant “rapid transmission through a user-generated buzz occurring outside traditional communications media,” it now means “our corporate Movember picture got more than a hundred likes on Facebook”

Q Quantify W Win-win situation

If you use this word instead of “explain”, studies show that you will make the ladies think you are Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise. Even if you are a lady yourself

“A situation that is not an utter disaster for either party”. A compromise that is literally impossible when either party has engaged the services of a lawyer

R........... Rocket science X X-factor Nobody seems to know what rocket science actually involves, only that the vast majority of things are apparently not as complicated. Presumably actual rocket scientists talk about things being much more complicated than being a middle manager who delegates his workload to somebody else.

A term deployed when attempting to make a product or person sound thrilling, spectacular and one of a kind. If this is truly the case, comparing it to a tired talent show full of fat George Michaels and hairy singing dinnerladies might not be the metaphor you were looking for

S Steer Y YOLO “We took everyday words like “guidance” and “direction” and replaced them with something that shouldn’t even be a verb, but makes it sound like your boss is a half-naked drunken Roman whipping your buttocks to make you pull his chariot a bit faster. We are business consultants, and we will not rest until plain English is completely destroyed”

T TIM WOODS

Despite his name, Tim Woods is from Japan and will teach you how to draw flowcharts and cover your wall with post-it notes. This will somehow promote efficiency, according to Mr Woods and his equally inscrutable cousin Toshinori Six Sigma

Either the currency of a place you launder money, or something that Barry from accounts says when he’s having a second pint on Friday lunchtime. You aren’t cool, Barry, calm down or you’re going to end up getting in trouble with HR again

Z Zumba An African city where the boss’s secretary can spend YOLO to get liposuction and a facelift

Investec promote Nick Leale Anna Lisa Detassis and Chris Blin. Masters of language and keeping calm while sitting in precarious locations

Changing Accent A thriving local business, Accent Language School, has been acquired by Italian-born local resident Anna Lisa Detassis. The school was founded in 1990 by former owner Chris Blin. Accent, now in its 25th year, employs some 30 part time specialists and teachers, offering seven languages both locally and off island. For the first time this year, Accent is partnering with the prestigious Choisy College to offer intensive French language courses for local students just across the water in St Malo. Mrs Detassis, who has been teaching Italian and German at a number of local schools, has more than 20 years’ experience in senior roles in marketing, communications and business development. She moved with her young family to Guernsey in 2008, working in the financial industry as a marketing specialist. Mrs Detassis has always been passionate about different cultures and languages, speaking six of them fluently. Having worked at Accent on a part time basis for the past two years, Mrs Detassis has helped to develop new opportunities such as the after-school language club run in a number of local primary schools. Leveraging the successful language franchise “La Jolie Ronde”, tailored for three to 11 year olds, which Accent introduced to the island many years ago, over 120 pupils each week are learning four different languages.

Investec have promoted Nick Leale to Head of Financial Intermediary Business Development following the retirement of David Fitch earlier this year. Mr Leale is a founding member of IBCI’s offshore lending business and more recently responsible for the business development and relationship management of the offshore financial intermediary lending business. Nick was educated in Guernsey, joined Investec in 2000. He spent three years from 2002 to 2005 working at Investec in London before returning to Guernsey to set up the offshore lending business in 2005. In his new role, Mr Leale will be supporting the bank’s established business development teams in their activities across the target markets and jurisdictions, including Guernsey, Jersey, Switzerland and the Isle of Man.

Praxis appoints new director

C5 Alliance Group has appointed two senior consultants within its business solutions division to the position of director. Marc Beavan and Matt Thornton both have extensive experience within the industry and will play an instrumental role in shaping the Guernsey arm of the business going forward. Marc Lainé, managing director of C5 Alliance Guernsey, said that the appointments were a result of the excellent achievements of both consultants as well as the positive evolution of the company as a whole since the acquisition of Itex last year.

The Praxis Group has appointed Rebecca Honey to the board of directors of Praxis Trust Limited. Rebecca is Director of Trust Operations at the firm and also plays a role in developing client relationships and engagement.

“Marc and Matt are both remarkably talented and dedicated members of C5 Alliance and this is illustrated by the admirable results they achieve. Each has been involved in extremely large-scale projects, yielding consistently impressive results for clients. Much of this work is on a par with the activities of international technology giants and it is encouraging to see projects of this level take place in the Channel Islands.

BECAUSE DO BUSINESS QUALITY IN STYLE MATTERS

Having joined the Praxis Group in 2008, Ms Honey worked as a trust manager with the responsibility of overseeing the day-to-day management of the trust administration department before being promoted to associate director in 2012. She is also a longstanding member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators having been admitted to the Institute as an associate in 2005. Ms Honey said: “I’m looking forward to the new challenges that come with being a part of the board and helping Praxis build and strengthen their client relationships.” Rob Fearis, Praxis Group director, said: “With over 16 years’ experience in the financial services industry Rebecca brings a wealth of experience to her new role and we expect her to have a positive impact on the overall direction of the business.”

In a nutshell, we primarily look after high net-worth individuals, arrange investment time horizons, assess appetites for risk and establish particular objectives they want to meet. We then prepare an investment proposal for the client to ascertain their needs and expectations and if the client is happy, we’ll arrange signing of mandates that provide authority for us to manage their finances on a regular basis. We also offer advisory services and ensure that we’re proactive with provision for all of these fields. We invest in a mixture of asset classes whether its cash, bonds, equities or alternatives (could be hedge funds, commodities, property or private equity). We try and diversify the portfolios in the best way we can, not only for return purposes but to mitigate risk. We take it very seriously, always. So you tailor the schemes for each individual? There’s no one way to look after people and their wealth or investments. Every bank or institution has a slightly different way of doing it but broadly, we utilise models to assess risk and adapt to take into account any specific objectives that they have. How long have you been in finance? I started managing money in September 2005 and the investment management department is the area of finance that is best suited for me. I’ve been with SGPB Hambros since 2001 – coming up to twelve and a half years, eighteen in total. Much of that in a client based money management role.

Describe a typical day in the office There is no typical day. There are dayto-day processes such as checking off trades to ensure they’ve all been processed correctly. I spend at least one day a week out of the office either in Jersey or London or somewhere else in the UK. There’s quite a lot of variety. We monitor the markets so the Bloomberg terminals at our desks are giving us prices and trade information constantly. Whatever we’re doing we always keep an eye on what’s going on. A lot of my spare time is utilised reading and doing research. It simply makes the job easier. What do you enjoy about your job? Without a doubt it would be meeting the clients. There are a lot of interesting people in this business. If there are individuals who have been successful with their finances then there is usually something special or unique about them. It can be inspiring to meet them. What’s the most important characteristic to have to be an investment manager? It would have to be a sense of humour. Also, accepting that you can’t get everything right. You can make all the correct analytical decisions in the world based on fundamentals but the market can sometimes do the exact opposite in the short or even medium term. Is there a phrase or mantra that you live your life by? Always be aware of the consensus view but always be prepared to challenge it. Integrity is so important. Always put the client first.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I’ve been training hard for local marathons, building mileage and conditioning myself. It’s my favourite way to unwind and I enjoy the competition. It’s similar to work in the sense that to out-perform an index, you have to be driven and constantly build. It requires that discipline and the competitive streak helps. Tell us something that no-one else knows In 1990 I was the youngest ever Channel Islands snooker champion. I played right through from junior to Island Team level, spanning twenty-five years! Do you have any advice for those considering a similar career? If you’re prepared to apply yourself, you may have to work harder than the person sat next to you, then you can achieve what you want to achieve. It’s slightly corny but if you are prepared and focussed to succeed in a certain area then it’s surprising what can be built and how far that can take you. Can you give me any hot stock/ investment tips? No. Who’s going to win the World Cup? Controversially I didn’t think England would make it out of the group. I think Argentina will take it but it’s them or Brazil.

BUSINESS BITES Barclays’ connect with online hub

Businesses in the Channel Islands can benefit from Barclays’ innovative Connector service for free, whether or not they are a Barclays customer. Barclays Wealth and Investment Management are encouraging Island firms to make use of the free service. All companies need to do is to register and create a profile containing information about their business the more detail added to the profile, the easier to match it to opportunities, discussions and content that may be of interest.

Carey Olsen: lead offshore legal adviser

Carey Olsen is the number one offshore legal adviser to London Stock Market (LSE) clients according to the Corporate Advisers Rankings Guide (Q2 2014). The law firm increased its LSE clients by four, compared to the previous quarter, and has 40 more clients than the next ranked offshore law firm featured in the guide.

CICRA supports roaming charge cap

CICRA (the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities) has backed a decision by JT to cap its roaming charges The pan-Channel Islands telecoms operator, JT, announced two services for mobile phone users that will avoid a ‘bill shock’ where possible. Mobile phone users will be able to put a spending cap on their accounts to manage their roaming costs by opting-in for a monthly limit of £50 on their accounts. Customers will receive a message notifying them that the limit has been reached and data access will continue to be blocked, not affecting calls or texts.

GFSC 2013 Annual Report Published

Guernsey’s Financial Services Commission has published its annual report and financial statements for 2013. One of the key messages it contains is that overall costs fell by almost £1 million or 7.5% compared to 2012. During the second half of 2013, the Commission commenced a significant change programme, which saw a restructuring of its Supervisory and Policy Divisions. In addition, the Commission established a Conduct Unit to provide more focus on consumer issues such as mis-selling; an Innovations Unit to undertake analysis of some of the more complex financial services ideas that the Commission is asked to license; and a dedicated Enforcement Division. All of this was achieved while reducing overall costs.

Guernsey earns admirers in South Africa

Guernsey is a prestigious financial services centre, according to wealth management practitioners at this year’s STEP conference in South Africa. Fiona Le Poidevin, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, led a delegation to South Africa, which included exhibiting at the event in Johannesburg. Miss Le Poidevin said “there was a real sense in South Africa that Guernsey is the ‘place to go’ for wealth management services and an acknowledgement that our heritage in financial services has created infrastructure and expertise which just cannot be found in other jurisdictions. Across all four key pillars of Guernsey’s finance industry – banking, investment funds, wealth management and captive insurance – there are long and strong links with South Africa.” BECAUSE DO BUSINESS QUALITY IN STYLE MATTERS

New look for Touchstone and launch of NavOne Touchstone, one of the leading providers of wealth management administration systems, now has a new corporate identity and has re-launched its Microsoft’s Dynamics NAV based system. The company has launched a new, more modern identity, and re-branded its TrustDynamics and FundDynamics systems to ‘NavOne’ following many enhancements over the past year to its system, which is built on the latest version of the Microsoft Dynamics NAV2013 R2 platform. “We are delighted to be launching NavOne. We believe this is a world-leading wealth management system powered by the latest version of Microsoft’s leading business software platform - Microsoft Dynamics NAV2013,” said Peter Le Brocq, Managing Director of Touchstone’s Wealth Management division. Used by small to large trust and fund administration companies, family offices and specialist practice management firms across 20 global jurisdictions, NavOne enables the business to increase operational efficiencies and reduces administration costs. Touchstone’s NavOne system was recently launched to existing and new clients at The Grand Hotel in Jersey. Over 100 industry practitioners attended the launch event to watch the system demo and also to listen to Guest speaker Phil Newman, NAV Channel Manager from Microsoft Dynamics NAV, as he shared details about the Microsoft Dynamics roadmap, the continued evolution of NAV, and the importance of the NAV platform within Microsoft Dynamics. This launch also comes at a positive time for the company as Touchstone was voted ‘Technology Vendor of the year’ at the Citywealth Magic Circle Awards 2014 held in London on 8th May. The awards were voted on by industry peers as well as a panel of judges made up of industry practitioners.

Guernsey gets exposure in the US

Guernsey’s funds industry has been showcased to some of the leading private equity managers and advisers in the US at the SuperReturn US conference in Boston in June. “It provides an opportunity to get in front of nearly 400 practitioners. This year many of the private equity houses are concentrating on investing into the US market. This is because there are strong returns available domestically and the US is currently outperforming many other markets. However, the extent of the financial crisis in the Eurozone means that there are potential investments in Europe offering a lot of upside and US managers will still pursue those where there is a clear case for strong returns,” explained Fiona Le Poidevin.

Guernsey wins on Securities

Guernsey has been named ‘best in class’ for Insurance Linked Securities (ILS) at the Professional Adviser International Fund and Product Awards 2014. Guernsey Finance made a submission for this year’s awards. ILS is an asset class that has gained significant momentum during the last few years and is particularly attractive to investors because returns are uncorrelated with the general

financial markets. Guernsey’s expertise across both the investment and the insurance sectors and its proximity to London and Zurich means that the island is well placed to meet the needs of the marketplace.

Insurance fraud not problem in C.I

The insurance industry is taking a tough approach to fraud as national figures show that the value of fraudulent claims has risen to a record £1.3 billion. The latest figures from the Association of British Insurers show that insurers detected 118,500 bogus or exaggerated insurance claims in 2013, equivalent to 2,279 a week. The average fraud detected across all types of insurance products was £10,813. While there was a small fall in the number of detected frauds, their value, at £1.3 billion, was up 18% on 2012. But in the Channel Islands, the problem of insurance fraud is not as serious. ‘The figures from ABI are quite shocking when you consider that insurance fraud is not a victimless crime and actually impacts on every person with an insurance policy. Fraudulent claims take time to deal with, but it also increases premiums,’ said Rossborough director Tony De Sousa.

Using a qualified advisor In your 20’s or 30’s and without a pension yet? With rules changing and new qualifications required, the job of the mortgage and pension broker is a constantly changing dynamic. We spoke to Mark Chipperfield of SPF and asked him why people should consider taking action sooner rather than later.

“W

e have built our business on personal service, professional advice and relationships based on trust and have no allegiance to any product or lender. Coupled with our expertise means the solutions we offer represent the best deal possible for our clients,” explains Associate Director of SPF Private Clients, Mark Chipperfield.

It involves dealing with members of the public who may be starting on the road to adulthood and are looking for advice on financial protection, life protection and health benefits, management of pensions and cash release planning. The services also lead into retirement age, specifically pension schemes to protect capital and give clients an income on top of their standard state pension. “There’s a whole range of ways for us to help clients build for the future. To provide help, support and advice to people who aren’t sure what to do with their money. One of the key parts of this job is not just making those preparations for people but to also manage savings from all arrangements made so that clients are sure to save.”

People do tend to shop around for brokers, deal with banks and independent advisors and they have funds sitting in accounts earning 0.1% and are looking for a better return. Often, they are still looking for 100% capital protection and this is where Mark and SPF come in. “It’s important to remember that people are inquisitive and want to tweak or add to structures that they have set up with us. It’s a responsibility that I am very happy to accept, ” explains Mark. Having been in the industry for more than thirty years, Mark is the perfect candidate to ask his opinion of the Guernsey system and his predictions for the future and how to build towards it.“From a layman’s perspective, it’s always been the case that financial advisors, apart from their regular clients, have had to seek out new business and with the new qualification requirements that are coming in there’s going to be change in the way that consumers have to think in Guernsey.

comes back to qualifications and consumer expectation, highlighting that professionals need to be well qualified to do this job. Mark is fortunate enough to have attained every qualification he needs but there is potential for a mass exodus from this sector of finance. There could be a large proportion of current advisors that disappear from the market when the new qualification requirements kick in. Qualifications demonstrate that the professional you are dealing with has essentially gone through years of suffering! They must be clinically up to date with products, the market and expectations. When asked about the best tools to use to build a successful business profile, Mark emphasises the importance of ‘drive’. “One has to pursue and be persistent in order to build success in their lives,” he explains. Mark backs Argentina for the World Cup...

There is a real danger of social exclusion that the regulators are very keen on avoiding and people will have to engage with people like me rather than wait for contact. The worry for something like pensions is that if it’s not looked at within a reasonable period of time, within two or three years, individuals can start to fall adrift of where they want to be.” He outlines that the main part of the build

ELISHA BENSTEAD

SENIOR ASSOCIATE AT PWC Age? 21 Employer / position? Senior associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers CI LLP Uni attended? I chose to take the Higher Apprenticeship (CI) route meaning I joined straight from my A-levels at Blanchelande College. Course undertaken? A Levels studied – Maths, Geography and French. What did you want to be when you were 8? A primary school teacher. Favourite way to relax? Sunbathing on a beach somewhere hot. What made you choose the company you work for? From a young age I’ve always been slightly different to my friends. At the age of 9 I took up motorcycle trials which is mainly a male dominated sport. In fact, when I first started, I was the only girl in the Channel Islands to compete. On a similar note, after completing my A-levels, I wasn’t keen to follow my friends going off to university but rather preferred the idea of going straight into work instead. PwC appealed to me as they offered me the opportunity to study towards a professional qualification, whilst earning a competitive salary and gaining exposure to a variety of interesting local and international clients. What sort of professional training do you take? Upon joining PwC I opted to study towards the ACCA professional qualification. The choice between ACA and ACCA is up to the individual but I felt that the structure of the ACCA qualification was more suited to my preferred learning style. Nobody has ever said exams are easy and the accountancy ones are no different but, providing you are willing to work hard and take advantage of the strong support mechanisms that PwC offer whilst you are studying, they are definitely achievable. What do you do on an average day? I currently work in PwC’s audit department. On an average day, I head to a client’s office along with my team for that particular job. There I have face to face contact with the client and I’m responsible for the completion of various tasks to ensure the accounting records of that company are accurate. I love the variety this job offers – working with a number of teams within PwC, building relationships with a diverse range of clients which operate in different industries and completing a multitude of tasks. It definitely keeps each day interesting!

MORE ABOUT PwC

From auditing their financial data and planning their taxes, to identifying the risks they face and supporting them with strategic decisions, we work with our clients, creating cutting edge solutions for them. We work hard to attract locally grown talent back to the Islands, offering many training contracts to local school leavers, undergraduates and graduates from all degree disciplines. Also, work experience at PwC is open to both students completing their A-levels and to those at university. You can access useful information about current training and working opportunities with us, as well as work experience placements for 2015, by visiting www.pwc.com/jg/careers

“You’ll be working and studying with intelligent and inspiring people, building strong friendships and valuable professional relationships. With over 184,000 people in 157 countries across our global network, one you’re qualified, the world really is your oyster.”

108

What is your next step? I hope to obtain my ACCA professional qualification this summer and then I aim to complete a dissertation to gain a BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting with Oxford Brookes University. This is a great additional opportunity available to those who follow the ACCA study structure. The attraction of gaining a professional qualification and a degree by the age of 21 really appealed to me when I chose this route. After that I’m a bit undecided but one thing is certain, the opportunities available to me will be endless. What advice would you give to yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now? Before I joined PwC, I applied for work experience here which gave me the reassurance I needed that accountancy was right for me and that PwC was the company I wanted to work for longer-term. An added bonus of gaining valuable work experience here was it made the application process for permanent employment much smoother for me, as I was familiar with the environment, and I haven’t looked back since!

CHRISTINE HUME

EXECUTIVE AT EY Age? 25 Uni attended? University Of East Anglia (UEA) Course undertaken? Accounting and Finance What did you want to be where you were 8? A swimmer Favourite way to relax? Yoga and watching films

What made you choose the company you work for? Before I went to university I decided to take a gap year and applied to EY. I was offered a one year contract and I really enjoyed the role and working environment. When I started university EY offered me further work experience during the holidays and to me this demonstrated their flexibility and willingness to support local graduates. Because of the whole experience I was eager to apply for their graduate training scheme and haven’t looked back. What sort of professional training do you take? The professional accountancy qualifications EY offer is ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) or ICAS (Institute of Chartered Accountants Scotland). The difference between the two is the learning styles; ACCA suits those who prefer to study and work at the same time and ICAS is intense block study over a few months per year. I chose ACCA as my preference however there is a balance between the two within my peer group and what is nice is the support you have as depending on the qualification you all study at the same time. What do you do on an average day? It is hard to define an average day in assurance as it depends on the type of client you are working on which does make the job interesting. Usually the day begins with checking emails and catching up with the team you are working with before heading out to the client’s site. I am also a member of our Sports and Social club so some of the day may be arranging events for the office which is another aspect of EY I really enjoy. What is your next step? I have just completed my final exams and I am anxiously waiting for my results. Because I have focused on my studies I am going to take a few months to decide on my next steps. However a secondment abroad has always appealed to me and this is one of the perks that attracted me to the firm. What advice would you give to yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now? The best piece of advice is to research potential employers. This is so important as you need to understand what the company is about, do they hold the same values as you, what awards have they won, what are the career opportunities? I would also recommend applying for a summer internship; this is invaluable in helping new graduates make informed decisions about their future, but apply early as spaces fill very quickly. We are already recruiting for 2015!

In various guises, Tim has worked in the construction trade for 28 years, first in the supply side and then progressed into the technical field of project management. Multiple developments and titles ensure that his days are always varied.

O

bviously the tower of paperwork Tim has to deal with daily is not such a rewarding or pleasing physical measurement to observe, but projects coming to fruition are what excite him. “My favourite element of the business is when I get to go home and reflect on what has physically been achieved; whether its plumbing, blockwork – something measurable that I can see is always satisfying,” he explains

Currently, Tim has a new build housing development that is 95% complete as well as major renovation and islandwide projects to keep him busy. Controlling the trade contractors and ensuring each sector has targets and materials is an essential part to completing work within the specified timeframe. Looking forwards toward the finished product/completion of sales is also an essential element to his business. Tim’s current project is rather interesting. His desire to build modern and highly energy efficient homes that retain

The perception of modern houses is that they are simply box developments which isn’t the case. It’s recognising traditionally aesthetic properties with all the features and benefits of a modern home. His current project homes exceed environmental standards by 31% and he is passionate about the difference between building an ordinary house that meets the standards, or choosing to build something that exceeds those standards, ultimately reaping the rewards and longer term benefits.

It’s clear that by putting financial terms on energy usage and fuel efficiency is usually enough to spark most peoples interest in building for the future. The housing market in Guernsey is clearly over-catered for and we can see for ourselves the amount of houses available to buy.

His personal opinion on the state of the Guernsey housing market is insightful; “planning regulations for environmental have eased, and The States of Guernsey seem to be taking a relatively pragmatic view towards environmental changes and are keen to encourage change as much as they can. The market has moved dramatically and Guernsey is waking up to the opportunities of environmental builds and fuel prices have been rising instead of falling; accelerating way beyond the rate of

“The days are gone where you can just build a box. Homes need to be well thought about, well constructed and well finished. It’s the standard now. The same rules apply irrespective of the cost or sale market you’re providing for.” His world cup prediction? It’s got to be the Dutch.

BMW I3

electricdreams Gallery test drives the brand new BMW i3 Range Extender – a car that could revolutionise travel in Guernsey.

T

he era of all-electric cars is upon us and the BMW i3 Range Extender represents the sum total of dedicated research and enthusiasm from the iProject wing of BMW – a team committed to developing technologies for zero emission motoring with futuristic vision.

With design in mind, the BMW iTeam have been understandably wary of gravitating towards the disastrous NEV (neighbourhood electric vehicle) aesthetic of the atrocious

114

‘G-Whiz’. Distancing themselves from the pod-car approach, they have created something that redefines consumer perception of a fully electric vehicle, with smoother lines, alloy wheels, suicide doors and a drive system that allows cross-country travel at the push of a button. This model is an elite marathon runner with unlimited flexibility. It has a selection of driving modes to choose from that allow increased distance for a slight sacrifice of top speed, or a faster ride at the cost of reduced range. As expected, it’s the economic values of the BMW i3 that impress the most. Simply put, it’s sustainability packaged into a concept-designed vehicle.

Purchase of an i3 model provides a portable charging lead with standard plug attachments as well as a base dock that transforms power for faster charging at home. On a full charge, the i3 achieves 200km in the most efficient driving mode. For the worrying types (or ultra prepared) the Range Extender model packs a module in the rear of the car that enables drivers to engage a petrol system in case of battery depletion. A 9-litre fuel tank in the nose of the car ensures that those long journeys to Waitrose or the numerous lengths of the West coast on a warm summers day will not strand the intrepid Guernsey driver. But it is a very exciting option for those wishing to journey further afield in this outstanding car.

The BMW i3 is a lightweight, ultra-eco friendly car. This model in particular is crafted from recycled alloys and carbon fibre blends with an internal, minimalist finish of reclaimed wood, further reducing the carbon footprint in all aspects of the build. BMW have invented a whole new design language for the cabin, stripping away useless buttons and dials by incorporating them into multi-systems with a clutter free finesse. Media systems (Bluetooth/Mp3 dock and USB), GPS and numerous diagnostic systems have been integrated into a cockpit that reimagines simplistic driving. It is a minimalist car with refined notes of luxury. Driver position is higher than average and road vision and peripheral views are clear and unobstructed. Vehicle information is displayed via multiple screens above the steering column and main dashboard that is clear and vibrant without being obtuse. It’s a fine example of modern efficiency and technology with lashings of style. It has various driving modes allowing for extended ranges and top speed limitations. Most interesting of all is the ability to travel hundreds of kilometres on a single charge (economy plus mode) at a relative cost of approximately £1.50 per week. Not only will this car drastically change the way we spend money on travelling, it will also change how fast we can get to our destination. The impressive drive system is capable of hitting 0-62mph in a spritely 7.2 seconds. The power response is immediate; there is no coiling of springs, maximising piston movement or delay in acceleration. The batteries are primed and power is accessed instantly which results in a truly unique driving experience. The BMW i3 glides around corners with ease due to its low weight distribution and solid traction. Because there is no thunderous roar, launch signal or sensory overload, the driver (and passenger) is tricked into the BMW’s fluidity and gentle ride. It’s like being at the wheel of a supercharged dodgem and is genuinely reminiscent of driving silent vehicles as a child. Exciting and invigorating, sparking conversation and smiles every time a corner is turned or a coast road is navigated. A clever Motor-Braking function ensures added security when slowing. The main brakes (and rear warning systems) engage gently when pressure is relieved from the accelerator and a 360-degree parking system allows for maximum safety at all speeds. Built for efficiency and wrapped in absolute comfort, the BMW i3 is the perfect mode of transport for Guernsey. The Aero detailing, subtle but eye-catching fusing of colour with smooth lines, compliment its beautiful curves making it a vehicle that everyone should own. Special thanks to Jeremy and P-Diddy for use of the car.

thinking of doing a full restoration. It just keeps going that way! I got the Morris back in 1994 and it was the first car I bought. I picked it up with my Dad from Somerset and he drove it back as I was only sixteen at the time. I hope to have it finished for the car show at Saumarez Park on June 22nd. How many hours a day/week do you spend on the project? Or how long have you spent on this particular vehicle? Sometimes you’re out there all week; other times you need to walk away for a few weeks. It’s definitely a love/hate thing. I’ve been working on this car on and off from the age of sixteen and it’s still not finished. Projects like this never are! Would you consider selling it? NO! GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

What makes this one so special? At the start it was just a bit of fun, but now so many people have put in time over the years it’s like part of the family. Is there anyone else on the island that aids you/helps/has interest with this kind of thing? Lots of my friends and family! Especially my Dad and Uncle (who came over to Guernsey on holiday and spent most days on it) to name but a few. If you could own any car what would it be? A 1979 Dodge Charger. What was your ‘pin-up’ car when you were growing up? That would have to be the Lamborghini Countach. What age did you pass your driving test? Was it first time? When I was 17, first time! When did this passion for cars begin and where did it stem from?

I got the Morris back in 1994 and it was the first car I bought. I picked it up with my Dad from Somerset and he drove it back as I was only sixteen at the time. I hope to have it finished for the car show at Saumarez Park on June 22nd. Not sure what age it was but I have a picture of me helping my Dad change a wheel on his car. It was a black and white photo so it was a while ago. I blame my Dad! Was there anyone one person/driver that inspired you? I think it’s a TV thing nowadays. People like Chip Foose and Gas Monkeys garage. They give good ideas and give you motivation to have a go.

What’s the average time scale for a build project? Pick a time, double it then add a few years. Then you might be close. Does being located in Guernsey have any disadvantages when trying to build a personal project? It can do. You can’t just pop in to a specialist and have a look at products so it has to be done on the phone, which can get stressful at times. Probably the reason I drove with my partner and my 2-month old daughter for 7 hours to take my motor to the engine builders is so I could have a proper chat with them to decide a specification to work to! What’s your favourite element of the build? Getting to drive it! I rebuilt it for the Charity Sprint in 2011 but only got my runs in when the motor went. It had only done thirty miles! Some drive time will be nice this summer, I hope…

KING OF THE

GARDEN PARTY

Words : Patrick Cunningham

T

his month I shall be reviewing a selection of items that will take your garden party to the next level. With accoutrements like these, your guests will spend their entire visit seething with envy!

Dutchtub

This portable tub is seriously cool and it is powered by a wood fired convection heater attached to the side! Liven up your work office party by sticking one of these in the foyer, or take it down to Cobo to watch the sunset with a pint. Even as a permanent fixture in your garden it would be an immensely popular contraption. For those that don’t appreciate bathers there is even a ‘loveseat’ version, designed for two. I wouldn’t take that one down to Cobo.

Check out www.weltevree.nl for more info

A Half Pipe

If you are the owner many hoards of screaming children (and miserable husbands), then this half pipe will provide the perfect distraction for them, allowing you to relax and enjoy the garden party with your mates. The holy grail of toys for both kids and adults alike, your half pipe will turn your garden into the coolest hang out on the block. Just watch out for drunk teenagers and compound fractures, both of which could get you in a lot of trouble.

Planetarium Firepit

I can picture it now. Everyone sat around the firepit singing kum by ya and listening to grandad’s stories of the 2nd world war while granny necks another glass of sherry. This stunning large firepit from Avant Garden would make a fantastic centre piece for any evening garden party, protecting your carefully

118

manicured lawn from the ravages of the fire above and providing an atmospheric setting for the ghost stories and inevitable heavy drinking that ensue when someone lights a camp fire. Check out www.avantgardenguernsey.com for more info

Forno Toscano Outdoor Pizza Oven

As everyone who has ever cooked pizza knows, it’s all about the oven. This Italian, handmade pizza oven is designed for use outdoors and will turn you into a true pizzaiolo. It burns wood and can reach temperatures of over 400 degrees celsius in just 15-20 minutes. The doughy delights produced by this beast would, I’m sure, be beyond exceptional. Just don’t try that spinny thing with the dough because it will make you look like an idiot. Check out www.williams-sonoma.com for more info

Life Size T-Rex Statue

Now seriously, who wouldn’t want one of these prowling about in their garden? Perfect for the paleontologist in your family, this realistic t-rex statue will be the source of much amusement and educational debate. There may be a small dash of ridicule in there from your more discerning guests, but just think of the educational nous that your kids would gain from this grizzly, life size replica. Probably not great for the younger, more sensitive kids in your family.

Making light of the idea that things couldn’t get any better than Apple’s Retina Display, the G3 truly pushes the boundaries of image reproduction, delivering incredible colour and sharpness on an impressive 5.5 inch display which perfectly reproduces images from the excellent 13 Megapixel camera.

The G3 is LG’s flagship smartphone for 2014 and, judging by the initial reception, it looks ready to compete with the more established players. Across the board, the G3 is a superb device that looks set to push competitors hard with its combination of usability, form and function.

It will be hard to find a finer screen than the newly released LG G3’s Quad HD 538 pixels per inch stunner!

Those LG designers have also caught onto the idea that selfies are very much a part of our world, so they’ve not skimped on the front camera which weighs in at 2.1 Megapixels and can be operated with a single, simple gesture. The G3 is as stylish as it is impressive. Finished in a metal style but built from polycarbonate, the G3 looks great but doesn’t weigh down your pocket. It runs on the Android KitKat operating system and offers its own Google Now-style daily information system called, Smart BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The LG G3 is available in a range of colours and is free, when choosing the SmartUltimate plan (£46 per month), from the Sure store, now!

So I get not one but two Samsung smartwatches to review at once, and they are both brilliant. Even though the Gear is only six months old, Samsung have brought out Gear 2 Neo. It’s a slimmed-down version without the camera and other extras that the original one had. Oddly I prefer the Gear 2 Neo. It’s lighter and neater, and cheaper. It links to your handset, so that you can make and receive calls, has a good music function, and lets you monitor emails. It also monitors your health and not only tracks but also customises your exercise, but what caught my eye was what it does while you’re at rest and watching TV. The Gear 2 Neo has a built-in infra red laser that can be set up to change channel for you! Fantastic! Now if you’re too lazy to reach for the remote control, you can do it with your phone. It is a fantastic piece of kit which is based on the growing fitness trend, which brings me on to the Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit. It’s a cross between a fitness tracker and a smartwatch and looks fantastic. You can monitor and log exercise such as walking or cycling, and get smartphone functionality like the ability to reject incoming calls or control music. It’s well designed, comfortable and looks great. So my next decision is which one to choose. Hmmmm.

GALLERY BODYBUILDS

ERY’S H GALL N T I W T FAS PLA USCLE ITNESS BUILD M MERGENCY F E 5 STEP

WORDS J. Falcon (sports scientist)

It is a proven scientific fact that massive, beefy men with 0.5% body fat are not just vastly more attractive to the opposite sex, but also more prosperous, intelligent and successful at getting scientist types in a headlock until they agree to write exactly what we tell them. I am personally so ripped that my shoulder definition is visible on Google Earth, and the real reason Google is banned in China is that even looking at my swole body from above was messing up the one-child policy. If you’re brave enough to admit you want to be like me, then I hope you’ve been following my last set of fitness tips to the letter and so probably have a body like an airbrushed picture of He-Man. If not, I expect you cry when you look in the mirror at night, and unlike me you don’t do this because you’re so beautiful it hurts. Well, Gallery aren’t paying me to make you feel bad (I do that for free) but rather to shoulder you weaklings like a bag of cement and keep pumping til you’re in better shape. The problem is, this issue hits the streets in July, so if you’re a bro and you’ve not been on a 100% protein shake diet since at least January there’s every chance you’re already embarrassed to take your shirt off on the beach because you’ve got triceps like a famine victim. I’m comfortable de-shirting in The Pollet, in the supermarket, at funerals, and you could be there too if you’d only spent winter shredding instead of sledding. Luckily for you, you don’t have to get on eBay to obtain last-minute tickets to the gun show. There’s been a terrible accident in your fitness regime, but you got picked up by the slambulance and the doctor is about to give your muscles the kiss of life. Nurse, get ready to inject the patient with 300 grammes of protein and an emergency beef transfusion - STAT.

Step 1: When it’s too late for regular fitness, it’s time to go extreme You can get acceptable results just by eating less and lifting a lot of weights, but if you want to be certified 100% beef in record time you’re going to need to get involved with a 360 degree fitness lifestyle programme developed, copyrighted and then marketed by American businessmen. All the trends are big in Guernsey - Tikkaram Sphincter Yoga, BootyPump, Taebo-Capoe-Jitsu, Pilates Paddlekite boards, Spincycling, Jog of War; but the one I most recommend is HotCrossFit. This targeted programme of posting hashtagged gym pictures of yourself on Facebook has successfully enrolled many Guernsey people in the Shrediversity, and you probably already know somebody who’s just dying to talk to you about it. They’re like Hare Krishnas who lift. Remember, it doesn’t matter how much you work out - if you don’t get up every morning and repost an inspirational quote about dedication you’ll probably die fat on the toilet like Elvis.

Step 2: Regular food is for herbivores, babies and people in intensive care Sport scientists have proven that it is impossible to get fully swole if you just eat normal food. You won’t be nominated for a bro BAFTA by Dame Judi Hench eating normal supermarket fare, you need to adopt a fad diet. How do you know it’s a fad diet? If you have to talk about it to other people, subscribe to a meal planning website or join a Facebook group. Atkins, raw food vegan and the anal juice cleanse plan will all get you a ticket on the tonk train, but Paleo is the best. Paleo was born when archaeologists discovered that some cavemen dealt with knowing that the protein shake wouldn’t be invented for 1 million years by becoming so swole that dinosaurs couldn’t be bothered to eat them. A daily programme of high set, low rep training and a diet of raw chicken is believed to have produced lean caveman gains. The only thing these early bros feared was the dreaded Tyrannosaurus Flex, but science thinks modern Paleo followers are safe because T Rex went extinct when he failed to concentrate on his arms.

Step 3: Fitness technology adds cutting edge science to your gains Unlike paleo man, today’s swoldier on the battlefield can benefit from thousands of years of scientific brogress. Some people might point to antibiotics or the moon rocket as the pinnacle of scientific achievement, but as far as I’m concerned antibiotics are for the animals I eat and the only rocket fuel I need is a creatine energy drink. Where scientists should be most proud is in the realm of proven, 110% efficient fitness technology. It must work, as you can’t lie in a TV infomercial. Where would humanity be without the power plate, home ab cruncher machines and those weird fitness shoes that women think will make their bottoms smaller? Along with the modern marvel that is anabolic steroids, scientists probably play these inventions down as they miss working for Soviet Russia and are ashamed of being too busy in the lab to lift twice daily.

Step 4: Never be afraid to show off your fitness regime and lean sexy body Never forget that the object of all this work is a body you can show off, under any circumstances - remember what I said about funerals, there are always chicks there waiting to be put back in a good mood. Some people used to believe in working out in secret, emerging into the light to dazzle their audience like James Brown, Godfather of Swole, but this is a wasted opportunity to show the public your fifty shades of gains. I recommend working out in public as much as humanly possible, whether this is at the busiest time for the gym, lifting weights in front of a window onto the street or simply doing 200 press ups in the toilet paper isle at the supermarket.

Step 5: Ignore all safety warnings So-called doctors will tell you that hitting the gym for seven hours a day and living on pure protein will lead to cardiovascular danger and an early death, but I’m a qualified sports nutritionist and I’ll tell you that this kind of advice is why there are so many weak old people about. Take a look at Hulk Hogan - dude is like 90 and the only side effect from years of steroids is a glowing moustache and the ability to bench press two fully loaded wheelchairs. The only medical advice he took is from President Rawnald Reagan, who told the Hulkster that he was a real American and that he could elbow drop Ultimate Warrior with impunity. If you need to get big quick, you need to treat having small muscles like a medical emergency and go hard like day-old porridge. That pounding in your head is nothing but the sound of your body being beaten into submission by the most effective fitness supplement of all: raw willpower.

GUERNSEY VELO CLUB This month, Gallery Magazine was invited to take part in one of the biggest sports on the island with one of the most committed teams – the Guernsey Velo Club. Having seen our Sport features in previous issues, the invite was extended and we happily accepted. The challenge this time? To take part in a regular Tuesday night training session called “The Chain Gang”. It sounded like a lot of fun.

“The training session is setup to be more intense than an actual race” explains Josh Gosselin from the Guernsey Velo Club. “It’s a seventy minute ride at top speed covering a distance of approximately 60km.” These tasty nuggets of information did not unnerve me. I met Bradley Wiggins once during the Olympics and used to ride a trendy bike in London; what level of harm could running the ‘Chain Gang’ gauntlet possibly inflict? Another rider pipes up and calmly states, “if you haven’t been sick then you haven’t been trying hard enough.” Undeterred, I proceeded to don the extra small team Jersey that members had kindly provided for me. The crop-top exposed my entire upper torso and this spawned much merriment and laughter from my teammates. “My mother loves me just the way I am,” I think to myself as I waddle

part in riding teams and it’s a wheel that’s set to keep on turning.

The crew numbers were growing with each passing moment as we talk tactics and correct procedure. It’s at this point that I begin to realise just how large this cycle family is. You may have noticed over the last few years that cycling fever has swept across Guernsey and on any given day it seems that half of the island is out on a bike, head to toe in Tour De France jerseys and cycling colours. The growth is due in part to the heroic actions of local professional riders, their success at competition level and the absolute dedication of sports managers who encourage local schools and clubs to get involved in this wonderful sport. This years Commonwealth games squad is the largest ever selected and reflects the growing skill and passion for the sport. It’s clear that the involvement of these schemes is Guernsey’s way of enabling and nurturing athletes for the future. Children as young as four years old are already taking

“It’s a pro mentality that really counts” explains fellow rider, Aaron Bailey. “Although it’s a team sport, as an individual, if you’re not putting the training in to contribute to the team performance then it could mean the difference between winning and losing.” As we sit in the sun enjoying waters and coffee, all I can think about is having a cigarette. I don’t. I think it might upset the group and I justify it as marginal gains in my pre-ride training schedule. An executive decision to improve my performance for the good of the team. I finish my Cappuccino and head to the bikes where everyone is getting ready to depart on the first part of the course - a formation sprint to the corner of Richmond.

Although it’s a team sport, as an individual, if you’re not putting the training in to contribute to the team performance then it could mean the difference between winning and losing.

” As we set off, Josh explains the logistics of what we’re about to do but he flies off ahead of me at lightning speed and I have to fiddle awkwardly with my gears to ensure I catch him. We quickly form two columns of approximately ten riders riding tire to tire, the whole time Josh is shouting instructions into my ear and guiding me through the process. This in itself is an unnerving experience, travelling at high speed in such close proximity to other riders and a technique I rapidly develop respect for. The leading rider on the right hand column

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

peels to the left and the next rider increases pace to take the lead, whilst the last rider on the left column feeds into the next. It’s a strategic activity that is designed to improve speed and team awareness but also test the stamina and dynamic power of the riders over an extended period of time. We hit Richmond in minutes, glide into the corner, around an island of houses and back onto the main road where we prepare for round 2. The way back to our checkpoint is more challenging due to gradual inclines and headwind but the race-pace effort finishes back at Vazon where we re-group to discuss braking techniques. At pace, I find myself intermittently out of rhythm with riders in front so I compensate with my brakes to level my speed. I discover that the squad utilise the line of riders ahead of them to sit comfortably at speed and swing out marginally where the heavier air (and its natural resistance) slows them down. Their experience and

years of refined technique ensure this is safe practice – it builds my respect for the sport immediately. Essentially, the art of riding successfully is akin to a game of chess. Riders must be strategic and calculating; not exposing themselves and only showing their strengths at just the right time. Three more of these and I am ready to keel over yet the squad haven’t even broken a sweat. Fighting back the sweeter variety of saliva, I thank the team and wave them off as they set out to the Imperial Hotel and back to L’Ancresse to repeat the same high-speed game of cat and mouse. GUERNSEY GOLF SCHOOL LAUNCHES NEW JUNIOR AWARDS SCHEME AND ‘GIRLS ONLY’ ZONE

JUNIOR golfers in Guernsey can now work towards a new awards scheme on their journey to becoming handicap golfers. The Guernsey Golf School, sponsored by ABN AMRO, has launched a series of ability-linked awards for its modular pathway programme. It has also launched a monthly Saturday afternoon session for girls. Young golfers aged seven and up will be assessed on their swing, chipping, pitching and putting and will receive a colour-coded golf bag tag for each level they complete. ‘We’ve seen our Monday night programme grow and grow in recent years; we now have more than 50 children on levels two and three,’ said golf professional and school director Phil Sykes.

AO HALL HELPS TWO ROWERS TO REPRESENT GUERNSEY AT COMMONWEALTH LEVEL

GUERNSEY will be represented for the first time at the Commonwealth Rowing Regatta in Scotland. Former Elizabeth College pupil Robert Hall and his Jersey-born pair partner Rufus Scholefield, both 20, will compete in the men’s pairs against England, Scotland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Wales and Northern Ireland at the games in August. ‘I wouldn’t be flying all the way up to Scotland and back if I didn’t think we had a chance at winning,’ explained Mr. Hall. ‘Rufus and I both fully believe we are capable of bringing Guernsey’s first Commonwealth Regatta medal home this August.’

Mrs Walker has been the charity’s patron since her arrival on the island in 2011. Members of the club put on the performance at the Styx Community Centre, to thank their sponsors, including their current main sponsors Trust Corporation and Fund Corporation. The club is celebrating its 20th year and with the help of Trust Corporation and Fund Corporation is organising a special event on Saturday 18th October at St Pierre Park Hotel.

HOME ADVANTAGE HELPED GUERNSEY STATES MEMBERS WIN THE INTER-ISLAND TROPHY THE annual fixture between States members from Guernsey and Jersey, which is sponsored by Investec Asset Management, saw plenty of pre-game joking between the deputies with Jersey members claiming they were bringing the trophy to Guernsey for a day out. But in the sunshine and at a new KGV venue, Guernsey was triumphant with 156 runs in 23 overs, losing just two wickets. They beat Jersey who batted first, who scored 155 in 30 overs, losing five wickets. ‘All the politicians from Guernsey and Jersey look forward to this annual event and while there is always a lot of banter, there are also some serious discussions which take place over lunch. We’re incredibly grateful to Investec for their continued support’ said Deputy Lowe.

Thornton, a Guernsey Triathlon Club junior development member who turned 17 the day before Sunday’s race, finished as first youth and 20th place overall out of a field of 1600+ athletes. Mark Naftel, president of Guernsey Triathlon Club said: ‘It’s great to see young Guernsey triathletes competing on the bigger stage at UK events, particularly with Max hoping to represent Guernsey in the Jersey Island Games in 2015.’

With it being the ‘build’ issue, here are some facfs about the most significant loss of a building in our lifetime; The Twin Towers

1. 9/11 was not the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. A bombing in February of 1993 killed six people. 2. On any given workday, up to 50,000 employees worked in the WTC twin towers, and an additional 40,000 passed through the complex. 3. The rescue and recovery clean-up of the 1.8 million tons of wreckage from the World Trade Center site took 9 months. 4. Passengers aboard United Flight 93, heard about the previous airplane attacks and attempted to retake control of

130

A roof conversion

the plane from hijackers. As a result, the hijackers dilberately crashed the plane in a Pennsylvania field instead of at their unknown target. 5. While video accounts of the WTC attack aired immediately, no video footage of the Pentagon attack was publicly released until 2006. 6. Though both the police and fire departments had emergency response procedures, the two departments did not have a coordinated response plan to a major incident.

7. In 2001, New York City fire evacuation procedures only required mandatory evacuations for floors immediately surrounding a fire. After a plane struck Building 1 of the WTC, Building 2 employees were initially told to stay in the building. 8. 18 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the World Trade Center site. 9. And lastly for all you conspiracy theorists...If fire caused Building 7 to collapse, it would be the first ever fire-induced collapse of a steel-frame high-rise.
