CHLOE-JASMINE & STEVI RITCHIE

INTERVIEW

X Factor darlings Chloe-Jasmine and Stevi Ritchie may have just been let out of the Celebrity Big Brother house after four weeks in captivity, but a trip to Guernsey for the Gallery Christmas party was still at the top of their agenda.

When Gallery Met Chloe & Stevi

Chloe-Jasmine is no stranger to reality TV after starting her career on modelling show The Face in 2013. She then decided to showcase a few of her other talents in last year’s series of the X Factor; mentored by Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, she entertained audiences with her offbeat style and charming personality. Unfortunately she was eliminated in week two of the live shows, but not before meeting her future fiancé Stevi Ritchie. Appearing on the X Factor was Stevi’s first step into the world of show business and although he almost didn’t make it onto the live shows (Cheryl chose him to be the over-25s ‘wildcard’) his outlandish performances won over the voting public and he made it all the way to finish in sixth place. After the show he continued the whirlwind by proposing to now fiancée Chloe-Jasmine, and as a couple they bravely entered the Celebrity Big Brother house earlier this year. We managed to grab a word with the happy couple ahead of their performance at the Gallery Christmas party, covering everything from weddings to the big boss ‘SC’, and we even squeezed in a few questions about everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure – this year’s X Factor… Was Big Brother a test for your relationship? C: Yes, it was a huge test but we passed with flying colours. S: Yes, it was because nobody would put their relationship on the line like that, and it was a lot of pressure on us, but we came out even stronger. How did you celebrate when you got out? C: We attended the wrap party but were in quite a dazed and confused state. It’s a shock to the system facing normality again. S: Lots of lovemaking and romantic dinners LOL! What’s next for your careers? C: We’re both very busy with gigs and shows which is incredible. I’ve also returned to my model roots after a confidence slip. My aim every day is to wake up and be happy. S: I’m doing a project in Japan with Sony and SYCO Entertainment (Simon Cowell’s record label) in November and January. Then I’m doing panto, but I ultimately want my own TV show. What drives you?

FEATURE

S: My heart, I never quit. My daughter also keeps me going. How are your wedding plans progressing? C: Wonderfully! We have a date and a venue. I’m just struggling with dress choices. S: We are getting a guest list together too, it’s just little bits and pieces to sort now. Have you remained friends with your mentors from last year’s X Factor? C: They were all lovely human beings. We are constantly bumping into them and some will be attending our wedding!

S: Chloe has, I haven’t got Simon’s number, but they are both coming to our wedding. Simon Cowell is a bit of a hero of ours, what is he really like? S: Simon is awesome, kind, warm and down to earth. I love him so much. He gave me a big opportunity and I am so grateful. Stevi, what is the best piece of advice he gave you? S: He put his finger under my chin at six-chair challenge and said... ‘Don’t change.’ Chloe, What is the best piece of advice Cheryl gave you? C: ‘Be yourself.’ Have you been following the auditions this year, if so who are your top tips on who to watch? C: Louisa and Anton are spectacular, as is Ché Chesterman. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them all battling it out at the final hurdle. It saddens me to see the grief Mason is experiencing by being chosen. I stumbled upon some of his material on YouTube and his potential is amazing. I’m praying they bring the amazing Jennifer back somehow. Her voice is silk. S: Anton and Louisa are my favorites; watch them, they are awesome. What has been the most exciting part of your journey so far? C: Getting up every day and breathing. S: Everything has been exciting and unbelievable! I am so proud and grateful to be in this position. Every day is another day and you never know what it may bring.

C: The bus, the car or the DLR… On a more serious note it has to be passion. I believe nothing is more serious.

Traditions... Words: Claud De La Mare

Christmas traditions run deep in many families, and I’m not saying they are all bad - there are some I absolutely love. One of the things I deeply miss about Christmas Day is exchanging gifts with my sisters before our parents woke up, and before we even dared to touch Father Christmas’ stockings. Between my three sisters, dogs, husbands and parents Christmas has now become a far-flung affair, and it’s rare that we are all together. You see not only were these always the best presents of all (because no-one knows you better than your sisters), but the four of us got to spend a few hours together before the craziness of the day began. I look back now and I really miss that. These days though, as life gets busier, one tradition I really could do without is pre-Christmas visits. Usually I relish spending time with my friends and family, I live for the last-minute drop in and cherish a cuppa shared with a good mate; because if life is not built upon the unique relationships we forge with those around us then I seriously wonder what it is all about. That is apart from when it comes to Christmas time. No I’m not a Christmas Scrooge, I just don’t like to feel pressurised to see every single person I know and care about in the precious few weeks that precede the most stressful day of the year. Simply because ‘why?’ Why do I need to see them all? Are they all going somewhere, forever? Will the world fall apart if you don’t see all of your cousins before Christmas Day (I used to be a Falla so please appreciate just how many I have over here)? If these visits must continue I suggest that we bring back the unique Christmas

tradition of ‘mummering’, brought about in 19th century England and Ireland. Typically a group of friends or family would visit the homes of their community during the twelve days of Christmas in a fancy dress disguise and take part in a range of informal performances including dance, music, jokes or recitations. It’s up to the hosts to guess the mummers’ identity before offering them food or drink. In order to guess who it is they can poke and prod the mummers and ask them probing questions. Once they’ve been identified they can remove their disguises and spend some social time with their hosts and then travel on to the next home. Does this not sound brilliantly awesome?! It’s like rolling Halloween, The X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, The Great British Bake Off, Come Dine With Me, Question Time and Charades into one giant evening of fun, leaving only one question to be answered: ‘Why the hell has this tradition fizzled out?’ It would hands down be the highlight of my Christmas to host a gang of wouldbe strangers dressed up as Abba, jumping through hoops of fire as I poked them and asked them socially awkward questions. It would certainly put paid to those pointless pre-Christmas visits. So if you receive a surprise visit from HRH the Queen this Christmas, dancing her heart out to Bohemian Rhapsody, potentially with a pirouetting dog in tow, then it could be me, or not, I don’t want to give myself away too easily. It might just be the pint of Port you drank.

“Once they’ve been identified they can remove their disguises and spend some social time with their hosts and then travel on to the next home.”

LOVE TO HATE

Cake... Words: Nathanial Eker

I’ve got to say, I struggled to think of anything I ‘love to hate’ about Christmas; I love the lights, the cheesy music and the (generally) friendlier attitude everyone has around this time of year. However, what I cannot stand is the (sadly) now staple element of ‘fine’ festive dining: the Christmas cake. I don’t even know why we bother to give it such a proud title as that, as we all know it’s just the same old fruit cake, deceptively wrapped in a layer of marzipan and icing to make it look a bit more Christmas like. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I cannot stand it. I’m game for dressing up cakes to look cool and I commend some of the more imaginative designs, but really, what is the point? I can only speak from my family’s point of view, but we generally indulge in the classic Christmas pudding. A true, long-standing gentleman of a dessert that is sweetened by a cheeky bit of brandy butter, a sparkler in the top (steady on now) or a helping of Christmas (in name only!) custard. Not only a topclass dessert in taste and customisation, but it also has performance appeal going for it. It’s the only pud I know that can make children’s eyes widen and bring a nostalgic smile to Gran’s face as the brandy erupts (or the sparkler blazes for those of you who fancy your hand at pyrotechnics!) and the lights go out. So my question to you, dear reader, is this; with the scrumptious, heavenly and downright classic addition to the Christmas lunch that is the Christmas pudding, why do we still indulge in the most heinous, generic and dry ‘tradition’ of the Christmas cake? Looks aside, what does the monstrous Goliath provide other than an awkward exchange of ‘no

20

thanks’? I’m sure there are some of you out there readying your tenacious pens and keyboards to write to me explaining how wrong I am, how I am the Grinch of Christmas food etc, etc. But hear me out oh crusader of festive fancies and saviour of all things fruit and marzipan. I’m just saying, it’s time to retire the Christmas (or for you totally mad people out there, ‘Xmas’) cake. It begun in Rome, as, doesn’t everything? The Romans used to make simple cakes out of fruit and pine nuts as gifts, before it was anything to do with Christmas, obviously! Hence, if a cake was simply made out of necessity when pine and fruit were the only food around (horrific generalisation but lets roll with it), why do we still continue to make them? We have so many options of excellent cakes; carrot, lemon drizzle, chocolate and of course, the good ol’ Vicky sponge. Yet we continue to make these rock-hard stocking fillers. As a final anecdote, I recently asked a young family member what he wanted to leave out for Santa Claus this year and he replied, with ‘carrot and brandy.’ Not my favourite choice of booze but maybe Santa is classier than I. Desperate to be rid of the slice of Christmas cake my mum had gifted me (in October no lessº); I enquired ‘What about this?’ ‘No one likes that, especially not Santa!’, he replied. I rest my case. Nobody likes this really, do they? We’ve been dragged down by tradition and early Roman taste buds for too long. Focus your efforts on the almighty Christmas pud and leave this horrible period of fruit based fanaticism behind us so we can all enjoy Christmas, taste buds intact.

“A true, long standing gentleman of a dessert that is sweetened by a cheeky bit of brandy butter, a sparkler in the top (steady on now) or a helping of Christmas (in name only!) custard.”

Playlists... Words: Paul Chapman

Christmas, for most us, is a wonderful time of year. As well as the decorations, presents, days off work and general bonhomie, the festive period presents us with an opportunity for extreme gluttony, without fear of retribution, until the New Year lands and you discover your liver is the size of Luxembourg and you can no longer fit into your favourite jeans. In short, there is a lot to love about Christmas. There is, however, one aspect of Christmas that I can’t stand, something even more dire than the obtuse and impenetrable perfume ads, and that is the Christmas playlist. Specifically, the same handful of songs that all the radio stations, shops, pubs and even your friends play ad nauseam for a month, year after year after year. You know the songs I mean: ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ by Mariah Carey, ‘Last Christmas’ by Wham!, ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ by Slade, to name but a few. Whenever I hear any of these records, I want to hit things. Even ‘Fairytale of New York’ sends me into a violent rage. Woe betide any soft fruit or cuddly toys that happen to be in range. The purpose of all these songs, apart from making their writers a tidy profit, is to invoke feelings of festiveness, goodwill and excitement, so it’s ironic that they make me want to punch George Michael in the face. Now don’t get me wrong, I love music. I’m either listening to something on Spotify or I’ve got the radio on, so I know my artists from my Elbow, so to speak. And I haven’t got anything against Christmas records. Indeed, there was a time when I liked most of these Yuletide songs (not all of them; ‘Mistletoe And Wine’ has always made me want to self-harm), but the endless yearly repetition has ruined them for me. If we see or hear something too much, it generally loses all appeal, and that is exactly what has happened here (obviously there are exceptions, such as Star Wars, the Stone Roses’ eponymous first album and Angelina Jolie). Even though there is a year between hearing these tracks, they

are played so often in such a short space of time that they become the aural equivalent of waterboarding. The fact is there are thousands of Christmas songs, both original works and interesting covers of established tunes, that deserve to be heard. I don’t understand why we are subjected to the same tracks over and over again when there is a wealth of other music out there. If broadcasters, pubs and your mates insist on playing the same tunes, let’s at least try to intersperse them with some alternative festive records; that way, we’ll hear the played-to-death records less, which in my opinion, can only be a good thing. So instead of adding ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day’, ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ and ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ to your festive playlist, why not throw caution to the chilly wind and try out my alternative choices? Give yourself a break from Noddy, Mariah and Kirsty; you never know, you might find a new favourite. And if Santa reads this, all I want for Christmas is Sleaford Mods to release a festive tune. Have that, Wham!

“Now don’t get me wrong, I love music. I’m either listening to something on Spotify or I’ve got the radio on, so I know my artists from my Elbow, so to speak.”

GUERNSEY WEATHER FOX

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? Words: Guernsey Weather Fox

Because this article was written at the beginning of November, it was a long shot (to say the least) for me to take a punt on a white Christmas, but nonetheless I expect that many readers will be scouring every line for a clue. The UK Met Office three-month outlook for the late autumn/early winter period (Nov, Dec and Jan) gave 3 to 1 odds for it being warmer than average, rather than colder. Coupled with that information were similar odds for the same period to be wetter than average. It’s not surprising that these two statements go hand-in-hand at this time of year, when the nights are almost twice as long as the days. You can almost guarantee that the mercury will plummet after a calm, sunny day, whereas it will barely drop a degree on a windy night with thick cloud. Lovers of Dickensian-style Christmas scenes needn’t look too disappointed though. There is still some hope for you. After all, the UK Met Office’s assessment of the odds is extremely broad brushed; not only is it averaged across the entire

22

UK area but it is also averaged across a period of three months! There is still so much room in there for localised cold events. So, what would it take to get a white Christmas in Guernsey? Well first of all it would take something pretty exceptional, because history tells us that it’s fairly unusual to get a single settling-snow event between November and April, let alone on the specific dates December 24th/25th. I suppose it’s as harmless as playing the Channel Islands Christmas Lottery, but it would certainly be a safer bet for snowlovers to simply wish for one snow event during the entire cold season, rather than pinning it to Christmas. We were left with little more than a lousy dose of sleet by the end of last winter. As for the previous winter, well that was the warmest on record so it never even came close. However, nobody who was in Guernsey three winters ago could forget the spectacular event of March 11th and 12th. We had already received one minor covering of snow in January that year (less than one month after Christmas). Even after that overdose of excitement, I don’t think anybody entertained the

idea that we would soon be almost kneedeep in the stuff. March 12th was amazing; it was my birthday and the weather treated us to an impromptu day off. We went sledging, made some fantastic new friends, drank wine for the rest of the day and then made accidental snow angels in the midnight moonlight, before climbing into bed. Perfect! But I’ll probably forget all that much sooner than the Guernsey children, who will cherish those magical memories for the rest of their lives. To explain it meteorologically, firstly I have to say that it was nothing to do with the heavy snowfall in Eastern USA. People ask me every year if New York’s snow is going to blow our way the following week, but the answer is relentlessly ‘no’, because thousands of miles of relatively warm ocean lie between us. In fact, a super-cold Eastern USA creates a greater temperature contrast with the nearby Atlantic, which leads to the development of more vigorous Atlantic depressions that actually tend to drag milder southwestern air over Guernsey. What led to our perfect snowstorm was a locking of horns between a cold

Polar Continental air mass and a milder but (most significantly) wetter Tropical Maritime air mass. This kind of stalemate between air masses is far from rare, but the usual result is just prolonged gloomy greyness and drizzly rain. The essential ingredient that turned it to snow in March 2013 was the exceptionally cold air that was carried from such places as Siberia by a persistent northeasterly wind. Being much denser (and therefore heavier), it wedged itself underneath the warm wet air that was simultaneously attacking from the southwest. The battle raged over our heads for the best part of two days, with persistent rain turning to snow en-route from sky to surface. In the end, the cold dry air prevailed and the warm wet air was deflected away. This meant that, although the following week was dry and actually quite sunny, the island remained white in many places because it was just too cold to thaw. If you want to be the first one to spot this type of weather returning to our island, then you can check the five days’ worth of UK Met Office weather charts (produced by real people, not machines), or the 10 days’ worth of ECMWF charts (computer produced), or even the 15 days’ worth of GFS charts (also computer produced). These are all easy to find on numerous websites, so just Google them if you don’t already check them habitually. You can work out the true origin of our air by keeping track of the isobars. The air in the lowest 5000 feet of the atmosphere roughly travels along them (always progressing with low pressure on the left and high on the right). If a few successive charts indicate that the flow will travel fairly directly to Guernsey, from right up near the Arctic Circle (like some kind of icy motorway), then all we need is a lowpressure system to come knocking from the south or west and maybe, just maybe, it will happen again. Or failing that, just keep checking my online forecasts (because I don’t miss much). Happy holidays everyone! See you in 2016, GWF.

COMMUNITY NEWS ONLY FOOLS AND (04) DONKEYS BIKE RIDE Following the success of the Mule Bretagne Brittany Bike Bash in 2014, the team are working with local charity Only Fools and Donkeys to organise a second ride in June 2016. The Mule Normandie Ride of Remembrance is a five-day bike ride with riders having the choice of two routes each day - 50 -55 or 75-80 miles and cyclists riding in groups depending on their cycling speed. The ride raises money for Only Fools and Donkeys, which has raised just short of £90,000 since it was founded in 2010.

Waitrose Admiral Park has donated funds to Guernsey’s School of Popular Music. Through the Waitrose Music Matters Scheme, £500 has been donated to the organisation after the partnership’s branches were invited to nominate local musical groups and organisations to apply for a one-off contribution towards new musical instruments, equipment or to help fund an upcoming concert or production.

HOPE FOR A CHILD TREK CHINA! (02)

They will be using the funding to record a song with local charity Autism Guernsey that will be going on sale to islanders later this year, in time for Christmas.

Guernsey-based charity Hope for a Child has raised more than £14,700 with an adventure that took them along the Great Wall of China. The team of 12 spent five days completing their journey along one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Branch Manager of Waitrose Admiral Park, Ian Burdekin, said, ‘Music is an important feature of life in every community and Waitrose has a long-standing tradition of supporting projects of this sort.’

The team was made up of Cindy Cochrane, Emily Wild, Jess El Mettouri, Jo May, Kate El Mettouri, Kim Davies, Lee Orviss, Nicky Wild, Rachel de la Haye, Rachel Kimber, Sue Merrill and Tyler Horey. Emily Wild, Hope for a Child’s Fundraising Events Manager, said that the experience was fascinating right from the start. The money raised from the Great Wall of China Trek can enable Hope for a Child to continue working with 1,500 families in Malawi for a whole year, supporting them on their journey out of extreme poverty.

MUSICAL TALENT MATTERS TO WAITROSE (03)

BRIGHT IDEAS RAISE HUNDREDS AT 1ST CENTRAL (01) Staff at 1st Central raised more than £400 by donning bright tights, baking cakes and challenging each other to undertake dares. Bright Tights Day aims to increase awareness in the local community about gynaecological cancers and to ensure that more women know the signs and symptoms. ‘The 1st Central team is relatively small but we didn’t want that to stop us raising a significant amount so as well as asking everyone to wear bright tights and make a donation, we decided to hold a cake sale and then as the day progressed, a number of dares were made,’ said Mike

Leonard, 1st Central’s co-founder and Deputy Group CEO. ‘It was great to see the men getting involved and wearing tights so we challenged one to walk to the shop to buy bacon rolls and it carried on from there. To raise more than £400 is quite impressive given our size but we hope it will make a big difference.’

CARITAS CHEF WAGES TO BE PAID BY ABN AMRO (05) Funding from ABN AMRO will enable the Caritas Community Charitable Trust to employ a part-time chef for its community café. The café in Mill Street, which is run entirely by volunteers, is open six days a week and serves more than 300 customers every week. ABN AMRO has stepped in and agreed to cover the cost of Len Le Prevost to work two days a week for three months until the end of 2015. ‘Employing a chef will also allow us to extend our daily changing menu as we are building up a loyal customer base. The café welcomes everyone and through God’s abundant love, we are breaking down barriers between those that have very little and those who have plenty’, said Reverend Richard Bellinger.

Get ready for the party season with B Creative’s 5th Birthday celebrations on Monday 14th December at St Stephen’s Community Centre. ‘It is such a privilege to be able to teach dance to children, youths and adults. Not content with their recent purchase, the Cornerstone, they have also taken on the Golden Lion. YBG

YBG Networking Evening Photography: Tiffany Matthews The Event: With a very informative talk followed by canapés and conversation, it was definitely an evening not to be missed. The event was organised by YGB, a non-profit organisation that give its members an opportunity to make new business connections and friends. The evening was based around the topic of ‘lifestyle’ and we were briefed about the issues we face as an island compared to other islands around the world. The Highlights: The speaker for the evening was Chris Brock from Island Global Research. Chris had taken a number of interesting survey results and gave an engaging 20-minute talk, backed up by ‘splat’ charts and graphs, about the 100 islands he analyses around the globe, from us in the Channel Islands to Antigua and the Caribbean. He covered points from ageing populations to income tax and gave a fantastic visual presentation to show Guernsey’s performance against the other islands. The talk was finished with a few questions from the YBG audience members and were answered with detailed explanations by Chris. The Crowd: There were lots of familiar faces in the crowd. Russell Meakin from IBZ.TV said, ‘The YBG drinks events are always good! The talk was interesting and there are always plenty of networking opportunities.’ Gallery also spoke to many other YBG members such as Ryan Francis from Sure, Chloe Kemp from Collas Crill and Annalisa Spencer from Lovell Ozanne, who all agreed that they had a fantastic evening and are already making space in their diaries for the next event.

CATHERINE BEST

Catherine Best launches her latest designs Photography: Tiffany Matthews The Event: At the event, held in the now famous windmill, Catherine Best showcased her latest jewellery collections just in time for Christmas, featuring everything from Tahitian pearls to Tanzanite stone. Catherine’s skill in creating stunning statement pieces, using some of the rarest gems in the world, is as apparent as ever. Her daughter, Vikki, was also there to show clients around and talk about the new designs. Bringing some cutting-edge designs to the collection, Vikki showed us the new ear cuff she was modelling during the opening, designed by herself and called ‘Sea Spray’. Catherine told Gallery, ‘It was lovely to see such wonderful, loyal clients appreciating our collection and enjoying our jewellery.’ The Highlights: In addition to Catherine’s stunning collection she had asked friend and talented pen designer Jack Row to join her with his range of beautiful handmade, bejewelled pens. His story began when he designed pens for a university project and he has now been asked by Harrods to work with them and launch his first collection in their shop; a diamond-encrusted Jack Row pen will cost up to £6,000. Jack told Gallery how he really enjoys what he does and was very grateful to be asked to come over for Catherine’s opening. The Crowd: With a constant flow of people coming through the showroom doors, Catherine was ecstatic with how the day went and to top it off talented chef James Ferguson from Cooked prepared and served an array of delicious canapés. So, need a present that says more than just Happy Christmas? Pop down to Catherine Best where you will find the perfect gift for that special someone.

MIND, BODY, HEALTH, SELF

WELLBEING

WELLBEING

Mind, body, health, self Words: Nichole Sweetsur

MIND

HEALTH

It should be a time of joy, but for some the festive season can be stressful. One of the easiest ways to de-stress and take time out is running a hot bath and closing the door. I’ve tested dozens of bath oils in the pursuit of calm and nothing, but nothing, beats Aromatherapy Associates Deep Relax Bath and Shower Oil. Vetivert, patchouli, sandalwood, wild and Roman chamomile combine to create a heady, soporific scent that will quickly calm and soothe a busy mind. Yes, it’s expensive, but it’s worth every penny. £39.80. Karma Beauty.

Beat the post-Christmas bloat without drastic juice-only fasts or impossibleto-stick-to diets. Therapist Sarah Brown recommends the Nature’s Sunshine Healthy Starter Programme. You eat a healthy diet alongside a 10-day course of cleansing herbal supplements and a good-for-your-gut probiotic supplement. There is also a minty liquid Chlorophyll which helps to rebuild and replenish our red blood cells, so will quickly boost your energy levels. It’s antioxidant and anti inflammatory too – a good winter immunity booster to boot. £54.13. bodyology.eu.nspshop.com

BODY If you’re keen to cut down on the amount of chemicals absorbed through the skin from your body care products then you may want to reconsider the type of deodorant you are using. Many antiperspirants contain aluminium-based compounds which form a temporary plug within the sweat duct to stop the flow of perspiration to the skin’s surface. There’s no conclusive evidence that these are harmful, but more and more people are going aluminium-free with their deodorant choice. Try the new Undercover Agent from True Organics of Sweden. It works by lowering the skin pH value so odour-forming bacteria cannot multiply rapidly and also contains potassium alum – a natural mineral salt which prevents the growth of odour-causing bacteria naturally. Not all natural deodorants deliver on their promise. This one does. £9.95. Bella Spa..

SELF A little pre-party pampering is in order this month. Cold weather, alcohol and late nights are not kind to our complexions, so book a facial now with Sasha and Stacie. The Lava Shell Therma Facial is deliciously warming and the heat of the shells intensifies the benefits of Spa Find’s marine skincare ingredients. This one ticks all the boxes for this time of year when skin often needs a moisture boost thanks to the drying effects of central heating. The lava shell massage also boosts the skin’s circulation, banishing puffiness and bringing back a glow to your cheeks. £55.00 for 60 minutes. Sashaandstacie.co.uk.

Tips for a Happy & Healthy Festive Season Beat the Festive Hangover

Take Some ‘OM’ Time

Endless office and cocktail parties over the festive season can leave you feeling a little worse for wear. To help prevent the dreaded hangover take charcoal tablets before you go out and milk thistle just before you go to bed to help cleanse the liver and flush out any unwanted toxins in the body.

The festive season can be stressful with Christmas shopping, social events, entertaining kids and deadlines to meet; it can all take its toll emotionally, physically and financially. By practising yoga and meditating for just 20 minutes a day you will connect back to your mind and body. Remember, a physical and emotional cleanse go hand in hand, it’s important to free the mind from toxic thoughts too.

Don’t Overeat We’ve all saved ourselves for a special event, only to be so hungry by the time we get there we eat twice as much as we normally would. Try eating a small meal 30-45 minutes before you head out to keep your hunger at bay. Take a Mid-week Cleanse Don’t wait until January to start your diet, select 2-3 days a week that you cut out gluten, dairy, sugar, alcohol and caffeine. It might seem a lot but when you

This collage shows the glamourous golden-age-of-Hollywood-type women in amorous poses with male figures suggested only in silhouette. Webb creates a vacant space where the romantic hero should be; using collage technique to define that empty space by pattern or texture-in this case a starry night sky.

The Flood is an exploration of the power of nature; both its impressive beats and the force of wind and waves. “It feels like the beginning of a new chapter in my work; I wanted to simplify things, create more space. This piece is about the power of nature; the wind, the sea.

Ryan created this piece for the British Heart Foundation’s Mending Broken Hearts Art Appeal, and all publishers’ profits go to the BHF. This intricate, whimsical and romantic composition is typical of his work, which always features text as the emotional key of the work.

This signed limited edition silkscreen print combines photograph of Kate Moss with imagery from Ferguson’s painting of a pine forest, a photographic detail of a pink dress and a garland of jewels in abstract collage composition.

REVIEW

Simon Evolves Words: Caroline Mauger

It’s all change at Simon Says – in fact things have been spiced up considerably. Gallery couldn’t wait to investigate how this healthy eatery has reinvented itself. Back in July I wrote a review of Simon Says, but the fresh green health food takeaway has listened to feedback from customers and made some big changes. I caught up with new chef Noi Robertson to find out what’s on the menu and why she’s found her ideal job. Noi’s father taught her how to cook so when, at the age of 21, she left her home in Thailand, near the Cambodian border, she found work running the bar and restaurant at a backpackers’ resort in Koh Samui named Jah Peace. What makes a girl leave this paradise island for another quite different one, Guernsey? Love, of course! Noi met Leon at Jah Peace and they came back to his home to start a family seven years ago. Koh Samui’s loss is our gain as Noi has brought her expertise and love of Thai food to Simon Says, and she’s on a mission to introduce us to a bounty of new flavours. ‘My philosophy on food is to keep it simple and really fresh,’ says Noi. ‘I love spicy food and I have toned it down but I want everyone to get to know me and then I can slowly bring in new dishes – and spices.’ Thai cuisine is naturally low fat and dairy-free and, in line with Simon Says’ original objectives, gluten-free and vegetarian lunches are readily available. There’s a blackboard listing Today’s Specials, which when I visited included Thai chicken or vegetable noodle soup, fresh mango salad and spring rolls. It’s not all Asian cuisine: there’s also rainbow pearl barley and feta salad and classic chicken Caesar salad. The refrigerated shelves are packed with a selection of freshly made sandwiches and boxed salads, along with a lovely range of soft drinks from Heartsease Farm. With flavours like fiery ginger beer and blackcurrant crush, you’ll be keen to try them all. The choice of protein pots and complimentary dressings seems to have ex-

panded, so you can customise your salads however you like. The cakes on the counter are delicious and there are samples to try, which is helpful when you can’t decide which one to choose – toffee or carrot is today’s dilemma. Of course you can still get your smoothie fix – Tea Tox is especially popular as a Monday morning pick-me-up - and thankfully Bean 14 coffee remains on the drinks menu. Another welcome change is the price list, with sandwiches ranging from £2.99 to £3.99 and salads starting at a very reasonable £3.50. Noi showed me the beautifully rustic, boxy shelves which house the brand new deli section. There’s all sorts for sale here: quinoa and seeds, dipping sauces and spreads, Tea Pigs infusions, Itsu soups and wasabi peas. I was most tempted by the coconut butter spread – how scrumptious does that sound? Noi is thrilled with the feedback she’s received in these early days of her ravishing menu and, with her background in restaurants, it’s refreshing to work during daylight hours and have time for her young family. The ethos of Simon Says hasn’t changed all that much: the team still wants to provide us with healthy, tasty food we can grab and go. We all know that when time is short, whether we’re slogging at our desk or running around town, it can be tempting to reach for something carb-laden and unhealthy. With lunches and snacks prepared on-site that will put a spring in our step and a glow on our cheeks, Simon Says makes it easy to stay healthy without any hassle. And with Noi on board, what’s on offer is simply better and more exciting than ever. Do pop in and see for yourself. Visit Simon Says at No.3 Commercial Arcade or email info@simonsays.gg

RED CARNATION CHRISTMAS

No one does Christmas quite like the Red Carnation Group; from flying in their own crew of professional Christmas decorators to mince pie petits fours, it’s the details that make this time of year so special. This year the Red Carnation team have generously shared some special tips with you, our lucky Gallery readers, on how to add the finishing touches to your special day. Read tips from award-winning chef Simon McKenzie of The Old Government House on creating an exceptional, stressfree Christmas dinner, and wine recommendations from top sommelier David Legoupil. THE ULTIMATE CRANBERRY SAUCE A colourful cranberry sauce makes the perfect accompaniment to a traditional turkey Christmas dinner. Fruity and slightly tart, its flavours will cut through the fat of your meat and gravy; add the juice from the orange for an extra zing! Cranberries 400g Water 100ml Caster Sugar 50g Orange Zest 1 Moscatel Vinegar 15g •P ut all ingredients into a pan, apart from the vinegar, and simmer for 20 minutes on a low to medium heat. •T urn down the heat if the mixture starts to bubble, stirring occasionally. •R emove from heat once the sauce resembles a jam like consistency •S tir the vinegar through and remove the orange zest before serving. THE CRISPIEST ROASTIES Family bonds might be the tightest but get the roasties wrong and be dis-communicated without a backwards glance. Choose your fat wisely; use the leftover fat if cooking meat, vegetable oil for vegetarians or goose fat for poultry. Potatoes Dependent on your crowd Garlic Bulb Thyme Handful Butter 100g Salt and Pepper To taste •P eel and chop potatoes then put into a large saucepan covered with cold water. top tip: cut potatoes evenly so that they all cook in the same time. •B ring the pan to the boil, but only for a couple of minutes, until the potatoes are parboiled. top tip: as the water comes to the boil it opens the pores of the potato and releases the gluten particles. Run under cold water before roasting to wash off the excess gluten. They will feel slimy, but the result will be light and fluffy.

•D ry off potatoes before putting into the heated roasting tray and salting. top tip: heat the oil with the thyme and garlic before adding the potatoes to infuse the flavours directly into the oil. Use only salt not pepper. • Place into a preheated oven at 180 degrees for 25-30 minutes. • Drain into a colander and put to one side until required. top tip: don’t let your roasties sit in the fat; this will make them squidgy and greasy. •J ust before serving heat butter in a large frying pan along with more thyme and garlic, fry potatoes until warm. Serve. KEEP YOUR KITCHEN CALM THIS CHRISTMAS WITH SIMON MCKENZIE •G et some roastie practice in over the next few weeks by sampling a range of different types of potatoes. My favourites are red skins or bakers, but yours might be totally different, it’s down to personal preference. Remember that potatoes will also change with the seasons so find the right one for you and nail it on the day. •D on’t feel under pressure to have everything ready at the same time, if your kitchen is small or you are limited with oven space then stagger your cooking. • Once your turkey is cooked wrap it in cling film, you can leave it like this for up to 2 hours and it will stay nice and moist. Just before serving heat up some fat in a roasting tray and re-seal it by lightly frying the outside, making it nice and crispy. Then pop it back into the oven for 10 minutes at 200 degrees ensuring it is hot throughout before carving • I like to make life as easy as possible on Christmas Day and even do my veggies the day before! Blanch them then put straight into iced water, drain, season with salt and butter then put into your serving dishes. Cover with cling film then all you need to do is pop into the microwave before serving. • Inject some life into your turkey with a bit of flavour; you can rub herbs like sage or thyme under the skin or give it a salt rub using Maldon salt and orange zest. Do this the day before and let the flavours really penetrate down into the meat. •T aste everything as you go along, if it tastes good to you your guests will be sure to like it too. DAVID’S CHRISTMAS DAY WINE Côtes du Rhône is always a nice wine to enjoy with turkey and my selection would be Cornas, Les Terres Brûlées, from Jean Luc Colombo. Les Terres Brûlées (The Roasted Earth) is the most elegant Syrah from the Cornas appellation. From a mixture of 20 to 60-year-old vines, this wine is a subtle blend gathered each year from different plots. The tannins, powerful but elegant, are softened by a well-managed two-year maturation in oak. The wine has an intense ruby colour with aromas of raspberry, liquorice, coffee and a long spicy finish. 100% Syrah is not cheap! But it’s Christmas so treat yourself! Available from Waitrose.

FEAST WITH NO FUSS

KITCHEN LIBRARY

Feast with no Fuss Words: Katie Whitford

I adore Christmas cookery, from preparing a Christmas pudding on ‘Stirup Sunday’ to baking edible gifts through Advent and, finally, to preparing the big feast itself. The trouble is, these days, I’m not in a position to while away hours, let alone whole days, in the kitchen. My reality is three young children and a busy home life. My days of French Glazed Apricot Tart from scratch are probably on hold just now, to be frank. But I still enjoy special cookery and am not prepared to throw in the tea towel just yet. You don’t need hours to spare, but you do need to be smart about it. So, how best to create a memorable, homecooked feast for friends without the lastminute fuss? I needed four courses with as many prepare-ahead credentials as possible. If that wasn’t too much to ask for, I wanted to keep it relatively healthy too. Tall order? With impatient toddler in tow, I scoured the Guille-Allès library for its best Christmas cookery volumes and, in minutes, found just what I was looking for: Dips in Minutes from Mary Berry’s Christmas Collection, Pumpkin Soup with Wild Mushrooms from Christmas with Gordon, Roasted Carrot and Squash Salad from Jamie Oliver’s Everyday Super Food and Seasonal Fruit Salad from Nigella Express. The undisputed queen of the prepare-

68

ahead meal, Mary Berry, has no shortage of delicious, 100% reliable recipes in this book and her Dips in Minutes did exactly what they were supposed to. I chose to assemble three out of the five dips - red pepper and herb, spiced mango and blue cheese. Truly, they were quicker to prepare than it would have taken me to get readymade ones from the shop, yet so much nicer. The crudités were all crunchy vegetables rather than carb-rich options. And I used low-fat everything! They were able to sit in the fridge for three whole days before I needed them. I was also doubly pleased with myself that I was able to save some of the jar of red peppers to use in the Jamie Oliver salad later (I so hate waste).

– ingredients: All readily available from the local supermarket, with the exception of millet, which needed a trip to the health food shop. taste: Delicious, with some unusual flavours, particularly in the Jamie Oliver salad. ease of recipes: Straightforward, as they needed to be. cost: Between £45 and £50 for six people, with plenty of leftovers. my verdict: With a bit of forethought, I was able to come up with a winning, stress-free menu - all the feast without any of the fuss, and a much more relaxing evening as a result. You can’t say fairer than that.

gordon ramsay’s pumpkin soup (or butternut, in my case) was done in stages over a few nights to fit in around my other commitments. Admittedly this involved roasting the butternut squash at a ridiculous hour and even foraging in my garden in the dark for fresh rosemary (I’d mislaid the torch)... but then the oven did the hard work and the rest was easy. Ever on the lookout for ways to simplify things, I substituted the wild mushrooms for chestnut ones instead, which were also a lot cheaper and easier to come by, although I guess wild mushrooms would be a bit more special. I was glad that I could double-up my silly o’clock roasting with some of the ingredients for Jamie’s salad (below), so actually it all felt most efficient. The soup (freezable) was velvety smooth and packed with flavour. And it only had a bit of double cream and butter added... Having pre-roasted the carrots and squash for jamie’s roasted carrot and squash salad the previous evening, the rest of the preparation was easy. That jar of roasted red peppers came into its own again for an unusual pepper and nut dressing and the results were reassuringly rainbow-coloured (aka healthy). I’d never had a milletbased salad before but it was crunchily tasty and a good substitute for couscous or rice. Whilst not strictly marketed as a ‘festive’ recipe, the bright colours and jewellike pomegranate seeds won me over and apart from a little last-minute assembly, everything could be done beforehand. I can’t imagine Christmas cookery without a bit of Nigella in the mix, but finding a ‘healthy-ish’ prepare-ahead dessert in nigella express was rather tricky. I’m naturally drawn to the comfort end of the spectrum when it comes to celebratory desserts and would have loved to have tried her Ice Cream Cake or, at a push, her No Churn Pomegranate Ice Cream but I reined myself in and found a bit of a compromise in her Seasonal Fruit Salad. It’s simplicity itself with a bit of overnight alcoholic steeping doing all the work. I like the way it coordinates with the main course salad in its use of pomegranates and the colour orange (I hadn’t realised just how orange the whole meal would turn out to be - the ultimate Dutch supper, perhaps?). Back to the dessert - the key to its amazing flavour is a slightly naughty mixture of brandy and Cointreau so this is a bit of a concession, but what’s Christmas without a treat? I think it would also taste great with a bit of vanilla-flavoured mascarpone on the side, but that would be quite wicked.

RED ONION

Fresh from the field, Michelle Schofield was looking to enjoy lots of sports and to get something to eat. Although it’s known as a busy town party bar at the weekends, The Red Onion is a vibrant eatery and the perfect post-game eating venue.

WINNING!

What to do in Guernsey when an old friend comes to visit? Obviously going out for food and drinks is high on the agenda. Katie was over for something of a sporty weekend, without actually going to the bother of playing any sport. Having played for Guernsey Ladies rugby and spent time as part of an offshore rowing four, this weekend had events that involved both sports. After arriving early Saturday morning, the first stop was a visit to Footes Lane to enjoy a double bill of rugby. The ladies started with a closely fought game against local rivals Jersey, getting ahead in the first half and then hanging on in the second as Jersey pushed hard in the closing stages. The men’s first fifteen were in action after and despite playing one of the teams near the top of the table and on paper, perhaps a team that we might struggle against, they also came out winners. Needless to say the day’s drinking started early and lunchtime bubbles were in order to celebrate a double Guernsey win. Sunday morning was spent paying respects to the fallen of our armed forces with a moving parade, hymns and 70

readings outside the war memorial in St Peter Port. After a quick change from uniform to civvies we were on the hunt for somewhere for lunch. Continuing the sporting theme for the weekend we decided to try the Red Onion. This self-styled sports bar is conveniently located in the centre of town, just around the back of Accessorize (so not necessarily easy to spot whilst just strolling along). The football kicked off at 13:30 and with two premier league games being shown that afternoon it seemed the perfect place to base ourselves before Katie headed back to the UK on the evening flight. The bar and dining areas are spacious with options to sit in a cosy booth and enjoy your own private screen and choice of sports, seats at the bar or one of the upstairs tables where you have a view of the chefs toiling away in the kitchen and large screens in every direction to ensure no one misses any of the action. The menu is American diner; think burgers, hotdogs, fajitas, ribs and loaded potato skins but with good vegetarian options and several stir-fry, noodle and rice dishes offered. The pizzas also looked pretty tasty. A good range of bottled lagers and San Miguel, Carlsberg

“ Having lived in St Peter Port for nearly five years, a keen spectator of most sports and with a preference for snacking on something more filling than a packet of peanuts; The Red Onion is the ideal location for when you and a bunch of friends want to watch the game, catch up or just enjoy some reasonably priced after work drinks.

and Carling on tap coupled with an extensive cocktail menu at reasonable prices should keep most diners happy. Even better and a fairly unusual find outside of a supermarket these days, was a bottle of Prosecco for under £17.00 – happy days! Not able to decide between a starter of baby ribs or cheese and bacon loaded potato skins, I convinced Katie to share starters with me so I could sample both. Service was swift and efficient and it was not long before a plate of food, large enough to pass as a main course in many restaurants, arrived. The sauce that came with the potato skins was so tasty that we were soon dipping the ribs in it as well. For a light bite or a quick starter at £5-£7 from this place would probably be enough to satisfy most people. One of my all-time favourite foods is chicken fajitas and the Red Onion did not disappoint. A huge platter of sizzling loveliness appeared and I was tucking in with almost indecent haste. The burger that Katie ordered came with a generous portion of fries and a side of slaw. No complaints from her either. The waiting staff kept drinks topped up and made sure we had everything needed without us feeling that they were standing at our shoulder throughout the meal. At our request they left a good twenty minutes between clearing the

”mains away before returning with the

dessert menu. I think only a lack of breakfast meant that I had any room to squeeze in a dessert, but I can never resist sticky toffee pudding and I am glad that I found that extra pudding spaced gap. Local Guernsey ice cream is always good but coupled with the warm, soft gooiness of a lovely toffee pud helps raise it to greatness. The chocolate brownie looked equally yummy and reason enough to come back again soon. I am not sure how I have missed this place. Having lived in St Peter Port for nearly five years, a keen spectator of most sports and with a preference for snacking on something more filling than a packet of peanuts, the Red Onion is the ideal location for when you and a bunch of friends want to watch the game, catch up or just enjoy some reasonably priced after-work drinks. A three-course meal for two with drinks can be had for under £50 but mains, that are pretty big in size, start at £9-£11 and there is a range of cheaper sandwich and snack options also available. A substantial lunch here and I was full for the day; did not even entertain the thought of dinner later on. Red Onion, I will be back.

What we ate. A great selection of American-inspired tastiness, topped with an amazing Brownie with local ice cream

“There’s this group coming down from Liverpool and my daughter thinks they might do something. So I think I’d like you to go down to Teddington TV studios on Sunday and ask them if they’ll come up to London for a shoot next week. ” — Fiona Adams

FIONA ADAMS

ART/DESIGN

ARTIST PROFILE:

The First Lady of Pop Photography Words: Alexa Rowe

There is a good chance you will know Fiona Adams’ photographs even if you have not heard her name. Her now iconic ‘jumping’ photo of the Beatles is one of the most famous pictures from the 1960s when she photographed everyone from Twiggy to Otis Redding. So how did a Guernsey girl become the most prolific pop photographer of the 1960s? Surprisingly, quite a lot of it has to do with a trip to Alice Springs on a Vespa. Gallery met Fiona to find out more about her fascinating life.

It was while she was working as an assistant photographer for London County Council in the late 1950s that Fiona Adams made the snap decision to go to Australia. After graduating from an art college photography course at 18 and working in a couple of jobs she felt she was not progressing. Her role mainly involved printing photos rather than taking them, which tended to be what women were restricted to at the time, and she found it a little tedious. Fiona convinced her friend Anne, who was a nurse, to travel to Australia with her. The friends took advantage of the £10 tickets being offered by the Australian government to encourage people to emigrate to the country. Fiona worked for a photographer in Perth for a few months and saved up to go travelling round the country. After taking a post boat up the coast, they spent 10 days driving from Darwin to Alice Springs on a Vespa scooter, sleeping in the open air. Despite a couple of scares with some dingoes and buffalo, they reached Alice in one piece but found they had missed the weekly train to Adelaide by a few hours. Fiona was taken on by a local photographer and ended up staying in Alice for 18 months. ‘That was one of the best experiences I ever had. I don’t think I could have done the job I did in London when I got back if I hadn’t been in Alice because it was a small place like Guernsey so you had to tackle everything from portraiture and commercial work to weddings and even documentary filming. It was great experience, much better than college.’ On her return to London after three years in Australia Fiona initially had a little trouble finding a job and after a fruitless visit to a photographer in Oxford Street she passed an employment exchange. ‘I nipped in there,’ she said. ‘I thought it was a long shot but I might as well ask.’ They did have a job with a teenage magazine called Boyfriend and she was tasked with taking photos of pop groups and celebrities including Cilla Black and Adam Faith. Towards the end of the week Fiona was asked to approach a new up-and-coming band: ‘Mr Wormsley the editor said, “There’s this group coming down from Liverpool and my daughter thinks they might do something. So I think I’d like you to go down to Teddington TV studios on Sunday and ask them if they’ll come up to London for a shoot next week”.’ The group was the Beatles and they all knew Boyfriend and agreed to appear the following week. Fiona was keen to try interesting locations for her photos so she took the group to a Second World War bomb site. She asked the band to stand on a wall and she stood amongst the broken rubble to take the famous photo, which took just two shots. John Lennon and the band’s London

manager, Tony Barrow, chose the shot for the cover of the Twist and Shout EP. Fiona ended up staying at Boyfriend for a year. ‘I was photographing all these people of the moment,’ said Fiona, ‘Especially the Beatles but also the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix. It was brilliant.’ Fiona then moved on to a new teenage magazine, Fabulous, again photographing celebrities where she stayed for a number of years. ‘I got fed up with photographing groups of four or five people; I did it for five years and I think with any kind of creative job you need change.’ She moved to American Express and took photographs for them all over Europe but Fiona then decided to move across the Atlantic. She was able to move to New York when American Express offered her a job taking photos for their holiday brochures and travelled to destinations like the Caribbean and Hawaii. Fiona then moved to Angola to be with her husband Owen, who was working for an oil company there. For the next few years she concentrated on raising her family and travelling the world with Owen’s work, living in a variety of different countries including Norway, Mexico and Ecuador. She eventually came back to Guernsey and took up photography professionally again in 1988 after Owen was made redundant, and worked for a number of local advertising agencies, companies and individuals doing a huge variety of work. Fiona has never officially retired but she said the digitalisation of photography held little interest for her as she was not keen on sitting in front of a computer and it was quite alien to how she had worked and produced prints throughout her career. There was renewed public interest in Fiona’s work from the 1960s when the National Portrait Gallery put on an exhibition called Beatles to Bowie in 2009 and the curator wanted to use some of her photographs. As Fiona had moved so many times since leaving London the industry had lost track of her but the curator contacted her through an agency which used to sell her prints in London. When she met with the curator of the exhibition she found out that not only was she the only woman working in pop photography at that time, she was also the most prolific photographer. ‘I was the only photographer who worked full time in the pop world because others were freelancers. I had five years working in the magazine world so I produced more images than any other photographer.’ You can see some of Fiona’s work and buy prints from www.fionaadamsphotography.com

GOOD NEWS FOR THE GUERNSEY PROPERTY MARKET. Figures released from the Policy Council today show that the mix-adjusted average purchase price for Local Market properties was £446,519 in the third quarter of this year which is 2.2% higher than the previous quarter. This is the first quarter in which positive quarterly growth has been recorded since the second quarter of 2014. The Guernsey property market is going through its toughest time in many years so it is good to see some positive news, however, has the worst now passed? We believe it is too early to tell as this is just one positive quarter so it should not be taken out of context. Quarter three is still 4.2% lower than the same quarter in 2014. If the next bulletin shows positive returns then any potential buyers may have missed the opportunity to buy at the bottom of the market. Lending criteria hasn’t changed much over the course of the year, if anything it has got a little tighter but to counter this

Much has been reported about the decline of the property market in Guernsey in the last five years or so. Below are the conveyancing statistics from January until the end of October since 2010:-

These figures relate to residential and commercial property. They demonstrate clear downward trends in respect of numbers and values of properties conveyed. But do they tell the whole story? irrational. This is heightened by the fact that most of us are amateur traders in the housing market, and when the stock is our homes then emotions will have a much greater impact on the way in which we conduct our business. However, markets are cyclical. Property may be a long-term game with an unpredictable near-term outlook, but we have all experienced cycles before. Demand for Guernsey properties will rise. That is inevitable. Prices will rise as a direct result. The intuitive amongst us who buy near the bottom of the market will do very well indeed. In the last month we have seen the first green buds of recovery in the property market. Enquiries are up, there has been competition for properties, the States has invested in Locate Guernsey, and lenders which have been dormant are launching new and innovative products. On top of this, the market in Jersey has strengthened considerably. Without a shadow of doubt, whiffs of optimism are pervading the gloom. Confidence is returning. Statistics tell a story, but by their very nature they are historic and when taken over a relatively short period of five years they can provide nothing more than a snapshot of part of a cycle. History tells us that there will be a bottom to this cycle. Perhaps it is time that we rationalised our fears…

PROPERTY SHOWCASE

Private Paradise Words: Caroline Mauger

Le Gaillard d’Arrière is a beautiful and original home set within a plot that offers an idyllic lifestyle. Locations don’t get much better than this: opposite Port Soif bay, Le Gaillard d’Arrière is a stone’s throw from this popular beach yet, tucked away down a private lane, is secluded and tranquil. Before you even get to the house itself there is much to discover: at the front there’s an orchard, a play area and a water-filled quarry that is home to ducks, moorhens and lots of fish, including carp. The property borders the Dunes Nature Reserve but, with a pergola and a landing deck upon which sits a pair of kayaks, you have your own personal reserve - with benefits. An al fresco dining area overlooks the quarry, the first of many spots where you can relax outside. Closer to the house is a double garage with a workshop, summer room and dog kennel, besides plenty of space for parking. Everything is enclosed to keep children and pets safe, so you go through gates to reach another place to play: the heated pool, complete with pool house housing its own shower room, which could double up as guest accommodation, a home office or utility room. The current owners have a table tennis table and two more seating arrangements, one of which is particularly great for barbecues. The advantage of all these different options is that you can always find a sheltered corner, even when the west coast is at its most breezy. There’s an abundance of interesting greenery - lots of olive trees have been planted in recent years, as well as umbrella ferns and fig and apple trees in the orchard. The house is oak framed, giving a rustic feel throughout, and it has a reverseplan layout to make the most of the fantastic views. Underfloor heating warms the ground floor; a spacious entrance hall leads to four double bedrooms, the master having a dressing room and an en-suite bathroom with a claw-foot bath, separate shower and double basins. Another bedroom has an en-suite shower room and the remaining two share the family bathroom. The bathrooms have recently been redone and are lovely, complementing each other with white metro tiles, Belfast-

84

style basins atop wooden bases and terracotta floor tiles. A second kitchen with a Belfast sink is at the rear of the house, presently known as the boot room as you can enter here and store your shoes. The first floor is completely open plan, its beams and solid beech floors making a real feature of warm, honey-coloured timber. The layout is extremely versatile: you’d want a dining area, a snug and a living room, perhaps also somewhere to study, but with so much space you could come up with the arrangement that works best for the way you live. Clever design means that light and airiness reign but without sacrificing the ability to get cosy: there’s a fireplace with a wood-burning stove where you could snuggle up to your heart’s content. The kitchen has been refitted by the current owners, with new granite tops and a Rangemaster oven. The fitted units echo the built-in furniture in the bedrooms and hallway: made locally, it’s all bespoke, hand-painted and top quality. Like the living areas, flexibility is key in the kitchen, as a number of units are free standing. The large, square terracotta tiles complement the smaller rectangular ones in the bathrooms. Le Gaillard d’Arrière is French for quarterdeck, and there’s definitely something nautical about the wraparound balcony on the first floor. Like the captain of a ship, you can survey your surroundings from every angle: looking out over Port Soif you can see if the flag is flying outside the kiosk, and from the rear there’s room for more seating so you can watch the children in the pool without

getting splashed. The house has three entrances, one of which is upstairs, accessed by steps up to this wonderful balcony. If you were to buy this house you’d do well to take some interior design tips from the current owners, who have really enhanced the natural feel of their home with their choices of finishes and fabrics. Happily, many of the fittings will be staying, including gorgeous pendant lights and chandeliers, the free-standing kitchen units and a Samsung American-style fridge-freezer. Le Gaillard d’Arrière is more than just a house, it’s a complete lifestyle in a great location. Richard Hardie, Managing Director of Livingroom, is sure it will be snapped up quickly: ‘This home offers the best of coastal living in Guernsey, set off the road with sea views, land, quarry pond, safety for family and pets and proximity to the beach. It’s a very exciting prospect for the local market.’ Livingroom is the sole estate agent for Le Gaillard d’Arrière – for full details go to livingroom.gg.

Get dressed for Christmas Create a Christmas table to remember with these tips from interior designer Michele Hilton… Decking the halls and setting the table for a traditional Christmas doesn’t necessarily call for boughs of holly and poinsettias. And in our hemisphere, it’s usually nicer to give a nod to the warmer, seasonal colours ranging from pomegranate and plum, to cognac and cinnamon and through to yew and spruce. Opulent For a unique play on the traditional Christmas colours, I always suggest a mix of jewel tones – such as amethyst and emerald or ruby and peridot. These saturated colours offer a similar richness and formality to any table and bring a festive flavour, further accented with rich and fleshy foliage such as amaryllis, hydrangeas sprinkled with eucalyptus, or pinecones and nuts. At a more formal table, a white wine glass, red wine glass and water glass will be expected and can allow for further experimentation with the colours in your chosen theme. This is the ideal opportunity to bring out your best porcelain and the silver candelabra. If you choose not to use a tablecloth, placemats are a colourful alternative. Have fun mixing and matching the colours of dessert plates across the table, for example, or within a layered setting so that the richness of your entire palette has an opportunity to come through. Understated For a more understated approach to Christmas décor, whether your home is classic or modern, using pops of colour at a predominantly white table featuring hints of gold or platinum is always a safe bet. In this scenario, the accent colour could usually be introduced through the napkins or napkin rings, white wine glass or ‘hock’ and tea lights surrounding a gorgeous floral centerpiece. I always suggest a low floral arrangement so that guests can see each other during the dinner, and tea lights in a less formal setting. Minimal Metallics and pearlescents are always a reliable go-to for an elegant, sleek approach to decorating your dining table and halls. Use one primary metallic such as silver, and mix away with smaller details and accents in gold, pewter or copper. Florals in this scheme can also be minimal, e.g. branches, pinecones, or just bunches of evergreen or pears. And most brilliantly, tabletop accessories in these tones are practical, given they can be mixed and matched again and again at dining occasions all year round! PROFILE

PROPERTY PROFILE

A winning combination Words: Caroline Mauger

Dunnell Robertson Partnership brings together a wealth of experience in both architecture and building surveying, a fusion that brings advantages to residential and commercial clients alike.

What should you concentrate on first when you consider a building project or property purchase, its problems or its potential? Since the fields of architecture and surveying each take a different focus DRP is ideally placed to evaluate both, and to provide residential and commercial clients with a complete property service from the outset. DRP was established in 1997 by Chartered Building Surveyor Andrew Dunnell and Drew Robertson, who has many years’ experience working in architectural design. As key appointments have been made since that time, the practice has grown with additional qualified senior staff. These include Director Kieran Lee, who is a Chartered Building Surveyor involved in the surveying side of the business, and Chartered Architect Mitch Sneddon, who has been appointed to the Board of Directors after four years with the practice. The senior staff are supported by a longstanding group of professionals who make up the rest of the team at DRP. ‘Surveyors bring a different view

98

on buildings: sometimes architects can be focused more on the appearance of a building whereas surveyors will consider good long-term detailing and lower maintenance liabilities,’ says Andrew. Mitch points out that it is the close teamwork between the different specialisms available that gives the practice the edge and enables clients to make an informed decision. ‘Our fields integrate and gel together,’ adds Kieran. ‘I’ll be talking in terms of what a property is worth and what work needs to be done and Mitch can come along to discuss the possibilities and potential of a building.’ It’s probably fair to say that many of us are unsure about the range of services offered by a surveyor, perhaps having commissioned a survey on a house we hoped to buy and awaited its arrival with trepidation. As Andrew explains, ‘Some perceive a survey almost as an insurance policy but to my mind it’s something that helps you understand what you’re buying and what comes with the territory. We see the whole range of properties and clearly a client will need to have different

expectations if they’re buying a modern house or a 16th-century farmhouse that might always have to deal with some damp. ‘Any building surveyor can prepare a survey to prevent someone from buying a property. It should be a constructive process and it’s about seeing that property in context, helping the client to understand it and, if they’re going to go ahead, how to manage it.’ Kieran is more involved in a different realm of surveying: commercial premises including office buildings, retail units and warehouses. ‘There are many common construction issues with residential and commercial properties but there are also other specific issues arising from the different forms of construction that tend to be used for larger commercial properties. Our clients are either refurbishing them, buying them or taking out a lease on them, and may have lease obligations to consider,’ he explains. Repairs are not always the landlord’s responsibility and the condition of a property at the beginning of a lease often

A WINNING COMBINATION

“ Some perceive a survey almost as an insurance policy but to my mind it’s something that helps you understand what you’re buying and what comes with the territory.” — Andrew Dunnell

has no bearing on the work that may be needed before handing back the building when it ends. So clearly, a tenant should be fully informed before taking on any lease. Integrity is central to the ethos of DRP. ‘We want to be able to look people in the eye and say we give objective advice,’ says Andrew. ‘For example, we might advise against a particular course of action because it won’t add value or will work for a client but will be difficult to sell in the future, which doesn’t always mean you’ll get the job. I spend my life going into houses that have been extended but they don’t work; if a client wants additional accommodation we’ll only make suggestions that will allow it to function properly as a home. The other scenario is getting involved in development work; we’ll spend a lot of time looking at a site and if we have to, we’ll say you can get x units and the end value is likely to be y so you won’t make a profit – we try to be honest about whether it’s going to be feasible.’ Projects include a number of prestigious developments such as Number One St Julian’s Avenue, the Crown Club at the OGH, the Duke of Richmond Hotel, the conversion of the old Woolworth’s building, Envoy House and the refurbishment of Cambridge House in Le Truchot. An exciting current project is the former CI Tyre Yard on La Charroterie. ‘The site has a history of difficult planning applications but we are delighted to have achieved full planning for 23 residential units,’ explains Mitch. ‘Alongside the Tyre Yard is Chateau de la Montagne, a protected building for which we have achieved planning permission to convert into three dwellings – together the two sites are a good example of an innovative new build and the recycling of old buildings.’ The variety of work keeps things interesting for the practice. ‘We’re working on a very high-profile public building to bring it into the 21st century, and also working with the GHA to develop three sites for social housing, and a number of inspiring individual houses. It’s having the ability to work on those different types of project that keeps things vibrant,’ says Mitch. ‘We bring the same level of detail and pride in what we do to all of our projects, we want our client to be delighted with the end result.’ The newest member of the board is proud of the teamwork at DRP: ‘We’re quite pragmatic but innovative in our design; the range of skills we have has contributed to our reputation for achieving results where others can’t.’

PROPERTY

Director Profile: MITCH SNEDDON Mitch started his career as an architect in Glasgow, where he worked on a wide range of projects including refurbishing and converting listed buildings. He has also worked on a number of industrial, commercial, heritage and MOD projects across the UK. Moving to Guernsey 12 years ago, Mitch has been involved with some large-scale projects in the island including the waste to energy scheme, GHA social housing developments and schools projects, including St Sampson’s High School and the Sixth Form Centre. Mitch is Secretary of the Guernsey Society of Architects, an organisation which represents Chartered Architects in Guernsey and promotes good design and professionalism within this sector of the industry. All members must be ARB and RIBA qualified and registered. Having joined DRP in 2011, Mitch was recently promoted to the Board of Directors.

Building the future together How two local companies are forging the way in the design and construction of the next generation of homes Sustainable building solutions There’s no question that energy saving is a hot topic. With fuel costs rising and the effects of global warming on our climate becoming more evident, we have all woken up to the necessity of conserving our resources. In 2010 Norman Piette launched its Ecohomes division in response to the demand for sustainable solutions in building. These buildings not only use less energy to construct, but most importantly, continue to do so for the lifetime of the home. Ecohomes offer two methods of whole house construction, traditional Timber Frame and Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) which complement other locally manufactured products, including roof trusses and metal-web joists. SIPs are the next generation of construction offering unparalleled energy efficiency, high build speed and low site wastage. The panels are made from a sandwich of timber-based boards and a highly insulated core, they are incredibly strong load bearing components which, can also be used to form the roof allowing the home owner to create large vaulted ceiling to maximise roof space. From the outside you wouldn’t be able to spot the difference in appearance from any other property that was traditionally built, whether it’s an ultra-modern home or a cosy cottage.

100

The real difference is in the interiors, which are more spacious, easier to heat and keep warm in winter and, more comfortable and cool in the summer. As official Delivery Partner for the Kingspan TEK Building System, Ecohomes is able to offer a complete SIPs building solution which includes design, manufacture and site installation.

‘‘

People are becoming more concerned about the impact that traditionally built homes have on the environment, and many more simply want to save money by living in the most energy efficient building possible. Steve Powell, Executive Manager, Ecohomes

’’

With over 200 SIPs homes now completed on the island, it’s clear that Guernsey is rapidly becoming aware of the benefits of sustainable construction and Steve Powell from Ecohomes explains why it is a growth industry. “People are becoming more concerned about the impact that traditionally built homes have on the environment, and many more simply want to save money by living in the most energy efficient building possible. At Ecohomes we design, manufacture and install systems to fulfil that need, whether it’s for a large development, a contemporary house, a traditional cottage or even a small extension.”

THE INTERVIEW

THE INTERVIEW

A man of many parts Words: Tom Bradshaw

With the utmost enthusiasm for everything he does, Tim Langlois leads a lifestyle that will leave many feeling exhausting just reading about it. A dedicated family man, the father of two juggles his busy day job at Specsavers with managing his successful photography business and still finds time for a whole range of extra-curricular activities. Committed to Christianity, the 36 year old is an active member of Shiloh Church and has led worship at its Sunday evening services for eight years as well as hosting a range of meetings for young members of the congregation with his wife SarahJane at their home. A keen runner, he is also passionate about musical theatre and uses both of these interests to raise tens of thousands of pounds for local

106

charities. His most recent fundraiser – the Let’s Swing St James concerts in October, which were heralded as a phenomenal showcase of local talent – raised £10,000 for The Eleanor Foundation. He said he is inspired in all pursuits by his love of making people happy. But how does he have the energy to keep going? ‘Thankfully I have never needed much sleep. I’m also not a stressful person – I never get anxious about things which I think keeps me healthy and alert. I like to be positive, my glass is always half full. Of course I get concerned about things, but never worried – there’s a difference. ‘When I am 70 I will probably get tired and slow down. I also have a wonderful and supportive wife in Sarah-Jane who encourages me in all things and helps in every aspect of what we try to do.’ Born and bred in Guernsey, Tim has always lived at Cobo. He has one older brother called Nic and is the youngest of a large clan of Langlois cousins. Tim attended La Mare de Carteret primary and secondary before sitting his A Levels at the Grammar School. Inspired by Nic’s interest in photography, Tim chose the subject as one of his A Levels and fell in love with it. He went on to complete a degree in photography at Plymouth University. Another formative moment at the Grammar School was when his friends Dawn Porter and Tom Lawrence convinced him to sit theatre studies. ‘I was initially doing environmental sciences but felt it was not for me, and Dawn and Tom told me to change and I am so glad I did. I was quite shy at secondary school but the sixth form was when I found myself. I really enjoyed theatre studies and fell in love with drama, and it really boosted my confidence.’ During his second year at university Tim got involved in a musical theatre group and first stepped on stage as an extra in a production of Grease. In his final year he became chairman of the group and coordinated a production of West Side Story. After graduating in 2000 he moved back to Guernsey where he met his now wife Sarah-Jane. Two years later he set up Langlois Photography, making it one of the longest standing on the island. ‘I started doing friends’ weddings and then friends of friends – both myself and Sarah-Jane soon realised we could make a good business out of it. ‘In the early days I loved the idea of doing it full time, but it wasn’t going to be financially viable. I now feel I have the best of both worlds with the security of the day job and the ability to pick and choose photography work so that it doesn’t impact too much on my family time. ‘My wife and children are my priority

and I fit my photography in around them.’ It’s a work-life balance which sees him working full time at Specsavers and utilising his evenings and weekends for photography. He is responsible for all aspects of Specsavers’ online marketing. ‘I love the diversity of my role. Sometimes I pinch myself and think I’m just little Tim from Guernsey but I get to visit the offices of Google, Facebook and Twitter all the time and they rely on me for my input on how Specsavers wants to feature in these digital spaces. ‘I love the challenge of working with new technology and finding out about developments in social media before they’re made public. Not many people get to do that and I feel very privileged.’ Beyond his role he said Specsavers was a great place to work. ‘I feel very valued here, it is a lovely company to work for.’ The job involves a lot of travel, with overnight or longer trips very often. Whenever possible he uses journey times and nights in hotels to catch up on photography work. ‘I utilise every spare moment, but I never let my day job and the photography interfere with each other.’ Tim said his passion for photography stemmed from his love of making people happy. ‘Even if people don’t like having their photo taken they tend to love the results. Photography enables you to capture moments that would otherwise be forgotten and make every special moment last.’ He and Sarah-Jane work as a hus-

band-and-wife team, which he said is well received by clients. ‘Whether it be a wedding or an event we never want to get in people’s way but aim to put them at ease and have fun with them.’ Tim’s faith is very important to him. ‘I was brought up in a Christian home. The way my dad dedicated his life to church really inspired me. He is my role model as a father and husband. ‘We could not live without our faith – it comes before everything and defines us. God has blessed us so much with our family and home. How busy my life is could put a strain on a marriage, but having a faith keeps us strong and together.’ Amateur dramatics has played a big part in Tim’s life since graduating. In 2003 he played the part of Joey Vegas in a local production of Fame and went on to perform in a musical every other year alongside annual entries in the Eisteddfod. He took a break from performing in 2008 to free up some time for his newfound interest in running. The following year he ran the London Marathon, raising £18,500 for a local family in need in the process. It was a feat that spurred him on to doing more high-profile fundraising. ‘I want to teach my children how fortunate we are and how much power we have to help other people. ‘Raising that much with the marathon made me realise how much of a difference one person can make if they put their mind to it.’ In October 2013 he combined his passion for fundraising and performing by staging a charity concert at St James. The successful James Bond music night

in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust established what is now a biennial event. The second installment this year, Let’s Swing St James, featured a big band and a range of local singers performing a first half of swing numbers followed by a more upbeat second half of contemporary pop. The money raised will fund four wells in Tanzania, providing around 4,000 people with easy access to fresh drinking water for the first time in their lives. ‘It was phenomenal and probably one of the best concerts people will see at St James in a long time. The level of talent over here is amazing. I have some big ideas for the next event in two years time and can’t wait.’ In the meantime he is now rehearsing for GADOC’s 2016 Easter musical Les Misérables in which he is playing the part of the innkeeper Monsieur Thenardier. Whatever spare time Tim has is devoted to his family. The four of them can often been found in Saumarez Park, all on micro scooters, or in the playing field by Cobo playing football and doing running races. ‘We are a family that loves adventures, and Sarah-Jane and I just love watching our kids growing up into the wonderful characters they are.’

PROSPECTS FOR LOCAL COMMERCE IN 2016 Words: Tom Bradshaw

Guernsey is a great place to do business but we can’t afford to get complacent about it. That is the collective opinion of a range of industry leaders as they look forward to the opportunities and challenges facing their sectors in 2016. There is a lot of optimism for the year ahead, providing that government and industry work together to ensure the right infrastructure and trading environments. Innovation and creativity will be key in terms of finding new ways to do business in an increasingly digital world. There is also scope for a lot of successful collaboration across sectors, with calls for the finance and creative industries to work together

more effectively. Ensuring an affordable cost of living, including economic and reliable transport links, also remains essential in supporting local commerce. Speaking to Gallery last month, Commerce and Employment Chief Officer Jason Moriarty said Guernsey’s future looks bright. ‘The entrepreneurial spirit that I have been witnessing of late in Guernsey is very impressive,’ he said. ‘But as a community we need to keep reinventing ourselves.’ As 2015 draws to a close, Gallery spoke to representatives from finance, IT, creative, retail and property about their views for the year ahead.

KEEPING FINANCE COMPETITIVE With the Guernsey finance industry facing one of the most challenging periods in its history, innovation and an effective review of regulation are going to be key for 2016. That’s the opinion of Fiona Le Poidevin, Chief Executive of the Channel Islands Securities Exchange. Attracting the next generation to a career in finance and ensuring that every organisation has succession planning high on its agenda are also vital. ‘The last couple of years have been challenging, particularly 2015. While the market has remained stable we haven’t seen much growth. We need to ward off the competition from other major centres.’ She has high hopes for the revision of laws programme, which the Guernsey Financial Services Commission is completing next year. ‘This is seeing the regulator and industry working together to improve regulation. It is all about attracting the right kind of business while also retaining the right standards of regulation so that we remain a respected jurisdiction. There is a lot of pressure on lower tax jurisdictions and we need to be mindful of that. Guernsey needs to be nimble in adapting to changes in regulation globally.’ She said there was great potential with new innovations like fintech to help set Guernsey apart. The CISE has committed to helping fintech companies raise capital and grow. ‘Similarly to fintech we need strategic direction across the finance arena. In terms of the main areas of focus, local funds are doing well but are facing challenges from other domiciles so we can never be complacent.’ She added that succession planning is very important for any organisation. ‘You need to have the right people and be able to identify future leaders.’ Fiona, who previously headed up Guernsey Finance, the promotional arm of the local sector, said the industry as a whole had to work on youth engagement and attracting the next generation into finance. ‘At the moment lots of graduates leave the island. That is not too much of a problem in the short term and young people can gain a lot of experience working off-island. But you need to bring them back eventually so their skills and expertise benefit the island.’

EMBRACING CREATIVITY Guernsey needs to fully recognise and support the role the creative industries can play in the economy, according to one of the island’s most experienced creatives.

FINTECH INCUBATOR Recognising fintech as a major opportunity for Guernsey, Jamie Vidamour is dedicating much of his time to promoting its growth. The innovation consultant has established a monthly fintech meet up which he said is all about showcasing the amazing talent and innovation already going on locally. The first event, which took place last month at Urban Kitchen, focused on what is needed to grow and support the local fintech industry. ‘I have always been interested in technology and the ways it can help people to do their job and better serve their customers. And that is what fintech is all about – it’s using technology to change the way

110

the finance industry operates. The term disruption is used a lot. There is nothing special about Guernsey in terms of its location, but we have all the right skills and expertise to make us a leading light. There is already lots of successful local fintech activity, especially around foreign exchange trading and digital wealth management.’ Jamie is also a member of Lightbulb, a local community of creatives and emerging technology enthusiasts which formed in April 2014. ‘We have a very successful and widely respected finance industry coupled with lots of local creativity and innovation. The key for 2016 is to bring those two elements together,’ he said. ‘The new Digital Greenhouse is going to be key to this. Organisations like Lightbulb will also play a role in terms of building communities.’

‘The States has been quick to think about fintech but has yet to understand the opportunities to link that up with the creative industries – that is where there is huge potential,’ said Graham Daldry, Creative Director for Specsavers, which houses Guernsey’s biggest creative agency with a global client base. ‘We need to link up the development of technical and creative skills more effectively across the board. Jersey is making more of the right noises and there is the danger of getting left behind.’ Inadequate connectivity is still a hindrance to the local creative industry, he said. ‘Commerce and Employment seems to understand the connectivity issue, but lots of businesses still struggle on that front. There are half a dozen really good small agencies on the island and we have an international creative department at Specsavers. We should be streets ahead of Jersey.’ Graham said the small population will always mean there is a skills gap, but it is improving. ‘We have a very good output in terms of young creatives coming out of the sixth form and College of Further Education with a broader range of skills than we used to have, but it could still be better. There is a lack of web development and more technical skills.’ Graham is on the board of Creative Industries Guernsey, an initiative run by volunteers to promote the industry. ‘Over the last few years more young people have wanted to stay here, partly because of the financial crisis, but also because of the buzz we have created. But CIG needs investment to maintain this momentum.’ He said the Digital Greenhouse is great and the island desperately needs it. But he is concerned that it is currently too orientated towards fintech. ‘The creative industries can attract investment from outside the island too, drawing business in, particularly for the finance industry, which requires creative services as well as financial services.’

PRESERVING THE HIGH STREET Retailers must embrace the cruise ship trade and focus on how they can differentiate themselves from online competitors, said the Managing Director of one of Guernsey’s biggest shops. Peter Creasey, who runs the family business of the same name, said 2016 was full of opportunity for Guernsey retail. The main challenge continues to be attracting the right staff and having the appropriate skills on the shop floor. Ensuring the island has adequate transport links also remains critical, he added. ‘We need to keep the island affordable for young people and to maintain it as an attractive destination for visitors.’

He said the Internet poses ongoing pressures as it has brought the world to local consumers’ doorsteps. But there is a balance to be found between the retail offering online and that on the high street. ‘Shopping is still very much a social interaction so we are not negative about the Internet at all. We can’t stop our customers from also shopping online and we wouldn’t want to. But we can offer them something they can touch and feel, and buy and take home the same day.’ The biggest opportunity for next year is the cruise ship market. ‘When I read all the negative stories in the local media about the cruise ships I always hope that the visitors aren’t reading them as we don’t want to do anything to turn them away. It presents a massive ongoing opportunity for retail and the island economy as a whole. I’m sure any UK town would give

their right arm to have an influx of 100,000 visitors over a summer season. We should applaud Visit Guernsey and Guernsey Harbours for bringing us that business. The big drive for us at Creasey’s is to ensure we stock the right products that these visitors want to buy.’ He said another big opportunity was visiting yachtsmen and women and he hoped the harbour team was working on keeping the Victoria Marina full with visiting boats all season. Early next year Creasey’s will embark on a renovation of its Bordage premises. ‘We are finally turning our attention to this store, which has always been the poor relative of our portfolio. This reflects our confidence in the future of the business and in Guernsey retail. We are a major employer locally and are not going away.’

BUYERS HOUSING MARKET Renewed confidence in the local housing market is essential for 2016. Advocate Mark Torode said local market property is the foundation of the economy. But sadly confidence in property is at an all-time low and that needs to change, the Mourant Ozanne’s partner added. ‘Guernsey is still a great place to live and people need to take a deep breath and have faith going forward. Some very astute investors believe that this could be the best possible time to buy. ‘We are seeing some green buds of recovery. In recent weeks a couple of houses have gone on the market at sensible prices which have sold for asking price within a couple of days. There is lots to be optimistic about, the market will pick up again.’ The number of transactions to date in 2015 are 12% down on 2014 and the average transaction value is 13% down. ‘The local property market has experienced a double dip. After the initial crash it started climbing back up in 2011 but then there was a downward trend again.’ Mark said one of the reasons for this was the lack of lenders. ‘Lloyds, Skipton, HSBC and NatWest are the only mortgage providers on the island. They are doing a fantastic job, but there is plenty of room for other players.’ He blamed the strict guidelines being set on borrowing in the UK but said that Guernsey should be treated differently. ‘The Mortgage Market Review is restricting some banks from lending over here but we shouldn’t have to follow UK protocols as Guernsey is a unique microcosm. You really have to feel for first-time buyers. The cost of living is going up but there is little scope for borrowing.’ The problem is exacerbated by the lack of starter homes on the market. ‘When developments like Charroterie Mills opened they were great as they presented affordable housing when it was

112

easier to borrow. But as soon as there were signs of recession, anyone with savings started snapping up these starter homes as investments, so the majority of them have become buy-to-let.’ He said some local businesses like Swoffers and Savills were doing great things to help people onto the property ladder but States support was also needed beyond the remit of the Guernsey Housing Association. ‘Whether the States go back to a first-time buyers scheme or grant, or come up with something completely new like a Bank of Guernsey, we need some entrepreneurial spirit to support those desperately trying to buy their first home.’ Looking at the open market, Mark has high hopes for 2016 with the recent appointment of Richard Le Tocq as the new head of Locate Guernsey, a initiative which encourages businesses and high-net-worth individuals to the island. ‘I hope he gets out there and jumps on Jersey’s coat tails, as we are every bit as attractive as a potential place of residence but they are strides ahead of us at the moment with how they market themselves.’

Barclays investment specialists Henk Potts and Nick Gordon were joined by former Sunderland AFC Chairman Niall Quinn and former Southampton FC Executive Chairman Nicola Cortese, with Sky Sports presenter Ed Chamberlin moderating. Despite the fact that there has never been so much money in football, many clubs and players that have been successful on the pitch are far less successful when it comes to managing their money. The panel highlighted the financial challenges facing the football industry including its international nature, which requires an understanding of international financial markets and the changing global dynamics.

pension scheme and the reinsurance market, according to pensions funding expert Ian Aley, who recently spoke at a panel debate hosted by Guernsey Finance. He explained that, while cost was a key factor behind using a captive, the fact that a captive allowed pension schemes to maintain control by facilitating a ‘principal-toprincipal’ approach with the removal of third parties in transactions was equally important. He added that traditional insurance companies acting as an intermediary would have other product lines, potential future business and business they have written in the past to consider. ‘Consequently, they are restricted in terms of the level of credit exposure they are willing to take to a reinsurer. So, in reality, if you’re doing a transaction of scale, you’re now looking at an average price rather than the optimal price,’ said Mr Aley. Paul Kitson from PwC said that the potential impact of life expectancy risk on pension fund deficits and balance sheets was a ‘big driver’ in why companies were looking to hedge longevity risk. He suggested that over the last 10 years there had been approximately £200 billion added to the liabilities of UK pension funds.

TODAY’S YOUTH Words: Jay Aylmer One of the most fundamental challenges Guernsey and the creative industry face in the next 5-10 years is the ‘talent drain’ for young creatives. It’s not a new thing, in fact far from it, but as Guernsey accelerates its charge to become a centre of excellence for the creative industries, a tech hub and entrepreneurial ‘mecca’, then we have to address the reality that a great deal of young students who are engaging with design, architecture, software development and so on, might not come back to the island post-degree. This can become extremely damaging. The number of kids communicating with the Creative Industries Guernsey committee for advice and knowledge is truly encouraging. The talent and willingness is without doubt here in abundance on our island. We need to nurture these youngsters and show them what our industry has to offer to encourage them to spread their wings. Then pray that they come back in some form over the next 5-10 years to a thriving industry. I see it as the job of the creative industries today to lay this groundwork.

AWARDED WORLDHOST RECOGNISED BUSINESS STATUS

This leads to the issue of whether the talent we require for our creative industries to succeed should all be homegrown, or be brought in from offisland, or a mix of the two? My personal view is that you need a mixture for the island’s creativity to truly succeed and to evolve. There is a catalyst effect when local and off-island creative talent is combined and the results are truly incredible. Anyone who feels that the silo approach to local talent is healthy is mistaken, us creative islanders need international stimulus.

Co-operative Travelmaker has gained national recognition for its commitment to customer service, after being awarded WorldHost Recognised Business status.

With that said, Guernsey and the creative sector need to go back to the beginning and feed the local talent to show them what we have to offer on the island. The more school placements, academies, summer schemes, scholarships etc that we have on the island, the more chance we have of retaining the obvious talent in the future.

The status is given to businesses that have trained 50% or more of their front line staff using a WorldHost programme and have signed a commitment to delivering excellent customer service. Travelmaker’s customer service was highlighted earlier this year when it scooped two national tour operators’ awards; the company, which has Guernsey and Jersey branches that have been arranging travel for Channel Islanders for many years, has been shortlisted for the Travel Trade Gazette UK Travel Agency of the Year for the second year running.

EXPERIENCE AND CONFIDENCE THROUGH AN INTERNSHIP Words | Helen Shoreson

Head of HR, Deutsche Bank Channel Islands

This year’s interns plus Emily Atkinson (far right) who is just coming to the conclusion of her one year graduate placement.

G

uernsey’s local finance industry has experienced growth over the past year, with the number of jobs in the industry, which remains the largest employer in the island accounting for more than one fifth of all jobs, increasing slightly over the past 12 months to 6,760 people.

The scheme sees candidates spend ten weeks with a specific team at the Bank, whilst they are also assigned a mentor to help guide their progress and make sure they get the most out of their experience. The scheme gives interns the chance to receive real work experience, learn new skills and gain confidence so that at the end of the placement, they are better placed to compete in today’s tough job market.

This includes a range of opportunities for undergraduates, and on one hand is good news for those considering career options in the local industry. On the other hand, however, this also underlines just how important it is for those thinking about putting themselves forward for the best roles to stand out from the crowd. Undertaking an internship is a tried and tested way to get a head start on your future career.

Last year, one Channel Islands intern successfully applied for a 2015 internship within the Bank’s Corporate Finance division in London and has now been offered a place on Deutsche Bank’s Global Graduate program after their university studies.

Deutsche Bank’s well-established annual summer internship programme provides a structured introduction to working for a global institution. Each year, the Bank looks to recruit bright, enthusiastic and ambitious undergraduates for the program and this summer, its Guernsey office welcomed three such people, Sophie Caseby, Andrew Inder and Rachel Hart, who all worked in different areas of the business. 122 122

” Beyond time in the office, interns also get involved in the Bank’s social and community projects. This year, for instance, interns raised money for the Bank’s nominated charity MindGuernsey, through a range of activities such as a spin-a-thon in St Peter Port. Evidence clearly points to the value of undertaking structured work experience and

internships. According to the latest High Fliers Research, for example, one third of 2015 graduate vacancies will be filled by candidates who have worked for the hiring organisation during their studies. In the banking sector, that figure rises to about 50%. The outlook after graduation certainly looks much brighter for those with an internship under their belt. Many previous interns at Deutsche Bank have experienced career success since their work experience too. Last year, one Channel Islands intern successfully applied for a 2015 internship within the Bank’s Corporate Finance division in London and has now been offered a place on Deutsche Bank’s Global Graduate program after their university studies The current job marketplace is competitive but Deutsche Bank is committed to nurturing the business leaders of tomorrow. If you’re an undergraduate and would like to take part in a unique scheme with a leading organisation that will set you up for success in the future, you can register your interest now by sending a copy of your CV to helen. shoreson@db.com. Gym / Dinners Out / Catching up with friends & family Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? White D’or, The Rock Garden & Red all evens Favourite Possession? True petrol head – it’s between the car and the motorbike!

What made you choose PwC?

It was actually following a management course at Loughborough during my second year. On the course we were engaged with top consultancy, accountancy, and engineering employers to work alongside them in performing tasks in teams. Each employer representative was a team leader, I was fortunate enough to work for numerous leaders. But one stood out. The PwC team leader was so impressive and on point that I was inspired to apply to PwC. I was offered a placement at PwC in Guernsey and took it. I took a big step away from my degree discipline and I haven’t looked back since.

What sort of professional training do you take?

I have recently fully qualified with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, ACCA. It suited my learning style perfectly, with its ‘drip feed’ style of learning. Being a globally recognised qualification, the prospects have really opened up since achieving membership status. This went hand in hand with the PwC professional training and experience gained on the job, which is second to none.

What do you do on an average day?

Being at a senior associate level I tend to be involved in more of the project management and complex areas of assurance engagements, such as investment valuations. I am entrusted with the responsibility of a number of client portfolios to look after on behalf of the engagement manager. Regularly I get the opportunity to deal directly with investment

managers, advisors and administrators, in turn getting the chance to travel with the job. I have responsibility for coaching junior team members, ensuring the engagement keeps momentum and deadlines are met. Challenges motivate me and my current role without doubt does just that.

What is your next step?

I’m thoroughly enjoying the time out of exams. Not having any revision worries to think about is a definite plus point. It means I can focus more on my career aspirations and work life balance. I’ll be looking to further my managerial, commercial and business acumen in the coming months. I’ll take the opportunities to travel with the firm as they arise and continue to leverage the knowledge and talent at PwC into my learning and career development.

What advice would you give to a graduate considering the experience you have now?

If you’re an undergraduate: I would push to do as much work experience now as is available. If your university allows it, take a placement year to start to build your Curriculum Vitae. If this is undertaken at PwC, you will start your placement in a graduate intake group and be able to get some accountancy exams under your belt. If you’ve already graduated: I would recommend a career where a professional qualification is offered. It’s a tough few years, but the opportunities post qualification are endless and there’s a lot of fun to be had along the way.

SENIOR ASSOCIATE AT DELOITTE

23 Uni attended? University of Southampton Course undertaken? Aeronautics and astronautics What did you want to be where you were 8? Racing driver Favourite way to relax? PlayStation Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? Red in Guernsey Favourite possession? iPhone

What made you choose Deloitte?

After deciding on a complete change in direction following the completion of my degree, I began researching different options and a career in accountancy stood out to me. The Deloitte Graduate program caught my attention, offering a comprehensive training program with the opportunity for rapid career progression and international travel. Speaking to new starters at a careers event they ran highlighted the great social aspect there is to life while working at Deloitte. One year on and it was definitely the right decision for me.

What sort of professional training do you take?

I started my ICAEW training after my 1st week in the office. The qualification consists of 15 exams taken over 3 years and I am fully supported by Deloitte with a dedicated training manager. The course is taught at BPP in blocks of 2 to 3 weeks. They provide fantastic support allowing you to contact them 24/7 if you have any questions.

What do you do on an average day?

Working in audit allows me to work on a wide range of clients from insurance to property, so I get insights into many different types of companies. Each audit client has its own specially selected team with the right mix of skills and knowledge; I work on some audits with just 2 colleagues and others with upwards of 10. All this variety allows me to interact with lots of different colleagues, undertake lots of different tasks and learn skills earlier in my career than counterparts in city offices have the opportunity to. Staff social events happen at least once a month so there’s always something going on and you very quickly get to know everyone in the office.

What is your next step?

Working in Audit at Deloitte has provided the best possible start to my career and provided me with exposure to multiple industries that I would have never got elsewhere. I have one year left to complete my exams after which I will be qualified, which will give me near limitless opportunities, thanks to the recognition the ICAEW qualification receives internationally. Hopefully though I will be able to take a secondment to New Zealand for a couple of years.

What advice would you give to a graduate, considering the experience you have now?

Be prepared to work hard but most of all enjoy the experience. The training to become a Chartered Accountant is certainly intense and requires a lot of self-motivation but there will always be someone there to help. All you have to do is ask!

JODIE

RENOUF 22 ASSOCIATE IN ASSURANCE AT EY

Uni attended? University of Plymouth Course undertaken? BSc (Hons) Economics What did you want to be when you were 8? I wanted to be 9 Favourite way to relax? I like to spend time socialising with friends; good food and good company. I enjoy walking the dog, particularly on the beach Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? I love Christies What’s your favourite possession? A ring I was given for my 18th birthday

What made you choose the company you work for?

I always wanted to gain a professional qualification after university. A friend of mine took part in the EY Summer Internship program and spoke very highly of the firm and her experience there. After some research and talking it through with my friend I was keen to apply as there is nothing stronger than a personal recommendation!

What sort of professional training do you take?

I am studying towards my ACCA qualification, this is globally recognised and equivalent to a Masters. I was surprised at the breadth of material you study and can see now why it’s such a well-respected qualification.

What do you do on an average day?

My day to day work varies a great deal and was one of the things that appealed to me as you work on several different clients, in different teams, sometimes in the office, other times at client sites, so not your typical office job! It’s great because you get to meet lots of different people which is something I really enjoy and of course you also have structured time away from the office for your studies at college.

What is your next step?

My aim is to become ACCA qualified in the next 3 years, after that I have no set plans but I know there are plenty of opportunities to travel within EY which is very tempting. It would be fantastic to work in another country and experience a different culture whilst having the security and career development by still being part of EY.

What advice would you give to a graduate, considering the experience you have now?

Take advantage of all the career networking opportunities that are available to you during your final year of university. The more time you spend talking to professionals the more comfortable you’ll be when it comes to interviewing. Keep an open mind; you never know what opportunities are out there. And finally, when looking for employment, don’t just think about the job, make sure you are working for a firm you believe in and who will support and invest in your development.

MORE ABOUT EY ”At EY we’re much more interested in the kind of person you are and the things you’re naturally good at than what degree you studied at university. So we want you to be yourself and show us what you’ve got and how far you want to take your career. Everyone’s opinion is valued. After all, diversity of thought and ideas enables us to provide better services to our clients. In return for your input, we’re committed to giving you the experiences you need to progress and develop as well as the learning and coaching to help you to excel. We have trainee opportunities in Assurance and Tax and work experience opportunities for local A-level students and undergraduates”.

NEW PHONES

REVIEW

License to thrill DJ - and Airtel-Vodafone Brand Ambassador - Hannah Jacques reviews the Alcatel POP 2 We’ve brought you reviews for the Sony Z3+ and Z4 and now it’s the turn of the next generation of Xperia Z series models, the Z5. At first glance the Z5 doesn’t hit you as the flashiest model on the market. Mind you, that’s not to say it doesn’t look good. Whilst it may not have the sleek curved edges and corners of the Samsung Galaxy S6 or iPhone 6s, this boxy model has an understated design with a frosty back that looks just great – especially in the yellow model, my personal fave! And if it looks good enough to be Bond’s phone in the new ‘Spectre’ movie then it’s sure as hell good enough for me! The Z5 boasts an impressive 23MP camera that does extremely well in most situations, its Intelligent Auto settings do most of the work for those of you who aren’t completely camera savvy but still like the crispest of pictures to decorate your Instagram page with. What makes me the happiest about this phone is its battery’s longevity. I’m not afraid to admit I’m one of those smartphone users who tends to burn through my battery a lot quicker than I probably should do. But fortunately for me, it’s actually pretty hard to do that with the Z5. After a full day of heavy usage that included streaming, taking hundreds of photos and even making a few old-fashioned phone calls from time to time I was still left with over 20% battery at the end of the day. In conjunction with the Z5 Sony have brought us a smaller version, the Z5 Compact. For those of you who like phones the size they used to be. Essentially they are just the same phone in different sizes with the Compact doing everything its big brother can do with

134

a few subtle differences. Whilst the Z5’s 5.2-inch screen is full HD at 1080p, the Compact’s 4.6-inch screen is 720p. The Z5 has 3GB of RAM whilst the Compact only boasts 2. Two slight differences that most users will never even notice! They even both hold a fingerprint reader that sits nicely on the side of the phone for a change. With some help from the tech team at Airtel-Vodafone, here are some of the specs – the handset works on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and features Android’s Lollipop 5.1 operating system, with an upgrade to v6.0 (Marshmallow) due shortly. It also comes with 32GB of memory with a memory card slot of up to 200GB. I think what Sony have done with this phone is fantastic. Whilst they may have saved a bit of money on the design side of things they’ve more than made up for it in producing a phone that steps up in terms of performance. With this step-up they’ve given us a phone that could well be the market-leader in being an all-round smartphone. Bold claims for a bold phone.

How to protect yourself from roaming fraud this festive season MATT’S TOP TECH TIP FROM AIRTEL-VODAFONE Thieves who steal handsets can potentially use the SIM card to rack up large roaming charges, to premium numbers for example. Here are 4 top tips to help protect yourself from fraud when travelling abroad: 1. Lock your SIM with a unique password; 2. Lock your phone with a unique password; 3. R eport your lost/stolen phone immediately to your mobile network provider. If with Airtel-Vodafone, call 121 or email 121@airtel-vodafone.com. Barring will be implemented on the device as soon as your call, voice message or email is picked up by an Airtel-Vodafone representative; 4. T ake care of your SIM/handset as much as you would your passport/wallet.

Get appy APP TO HELP YOU PROSPER Recommended by Paul Chapman Wally (iOS, Android) - Smart personal finance. Goodbudget Budget Planner (iOS, Android) - Expense tracker and personal finance manager. Budgt (iOS) - Monthly finances, day by day. In these financially turbulent times, it’s fair to say that most of us would like a bit more money. Although additional cash may not be forthcoming from your employer, with a bit of careful budgetary planning you can save yourself a small fortune over the course of a year. Maintaining a budget has been a pain in the bum in the past, but now there is a raft of budgeting and personal finance apps that aim to simplify the process and set you on your way to greater prosperity. Here we look at three of the most popular.

Wally (iOS, Android) is a personal finance app that aims to bring all the financial information you need into a simple interface so that you can quickly take control of your finances. Set a savings target, spending budget and income, all of which can be viewed on the main screen. Expenses are quick to create and can be tracked easily, along with money saved and saving goals. One of the app’s strongest features is that it allows you to scan your receipts, automatically inputting all the details of your purchases for you. And if you have your location services turned on, Wally will automatically identify and categorise the venue. But perhaps best of all, it’s free to use. Goodbudget Budget Planner (iOS, Android) is an app that brings the popular envelope budgeting method to your smartphone. You create ‘envelopes’ for each of your budget categories, for example groceries, utilities and petrol, and then allocate a certain amount of money to each envelope. Once it’s all set up it’s easy to record and track how much you’re spending from each envelope. Where the app comes into its own is with its budget-sharing capabilities: if you’re

25 years ago, and it’s a trend that’s set to continue. So as long as we continue to exercise, eat sensibly and look after ourselves, and as long as medicine continues to advance, we’ve got a pretty good chance of living to a ripe old age. I cycle, eat broccoli and make sure I have plenty of fruit (grapes mainly. In the form of wine), so I’m hopeful of a good innings.

Words Paul Chapman It was Mr Spock, the pointy-eared, halfhuman, half-Vulcan first officer of the USS Enterprise who said ‘dif tor heh smusma’. If your Vulcan is a bit rusty, he was, of course, saying ‘live long and prosper’, a worthy sentiment I’m sure you’ll agree, and something we would all like to do. It’s a well-known fact that people now live longer than they did even

Where I struggle is with the prosper bit. Everything is so expensive these days. Utilities, food, petrol and travel, to name but a few, seem to be getting ever more costly and yet we don’t appear to be getting a better service. For example, the price of the full Sky package is now ludicrous, whereas its customer service is clearly inversely proportional to the ever spiralling costs. Besides the cost of everything you need to live in the modern age, there has been a surge in recent years of something else vying for the contents of your wallet, and that is the charity fundraiser. Years ago you had Children In Need, Comic Relief, occasionally a mate raising some cash for a worthy cause, and that was about it. Nowadays, not a week goes by without a friend riding a unicycle backwards up Kilimanjaro for

tracking your finances with a spouse, family member or friend, it’s easy to sync your budget across multiple devices including smartphones and the web. Goodbudget has a comprehensive set of reports across the app and the web and is free to download, although it does offer in-app purchases. Budgt (iOS) is a lightweight budgeting app with a clean design. It focuses on expense tracking in a simple and intuitive way. Create a monthly budget with income and recurring expenses and the app will tell you how much you can spend each day, based on what you have already spent during the current month. You can set up your own categories of expenses, set reminders to prompt you to keep track and, if you’re going on holiday, Budgt will take care of currency conversions for you. The app also offers Apple Watch functionality and is available for a one-off fee of £1.49. December is an expensive month, and the New Year offers us the chance to make resolutions to improve our lives, so why not use technology to help get your finances in order? You never know, 2016 could turn out to be more prosperous than you think. .

orphaned zebras, or growing their nasal hair for Tibet. And I feel obliged to donate. Charities couldn’t do their great work without the financial support of the public, it’s just there seem to be so many of them. Their appetites seem to be increasing exponentially, as do their feet. And the rest of them, come to that. Then there’s books, toys, swimming lessons, nursery, football coaching, accidentally purchased iPad games, not to mention the new TV needed after my son threw a ball at the old one a week before the World Cup started. And the less said about the iPad that one of my daughters put in the microwave, the better. Even a quick trip to the local shop ends up costing a fortune as I’m bullied into buying exorbitantly priced children’s magazines with tacky free gifts stuck to the front. Our house is now full of random bits of plastic, separated from whatever other parts made up the toy, never to be reunited. Or played with again. My chances of prosperity are slim; realistically the best most of us can hope for is to live long and get by, which is fine. Unless, of course, you’re the manufacturer of cheap plastic tat.
