ISSUE #44 [DEVELOP]

This month we interviewed for, and recruited, a junior Editorial Assistant to join the Gallery team. Welcome to Tiffany! The process gave us the opportunity to meet with a number of our island’s young creatives, and the level of skill and talent mastered by today’s youth blew us away. I was left totally inspired, if not a bit daunted about how technologically out of touch I already am, and was left wondering – were the same opportunities open to me when I was younger or did I just let them pass me by?

Reflecting on the past made me feel old so I stopped this train of thought immediately and made the decision that this month our theme ‘develop’ would take the steer of showcasing the wealth of young talent our little island is involved in developing. The Gallery team rounded up the next generation of achievers from the worlds of business, sport, arts, music and cookery as well as their mentors in a feature which investigates ‘who are the local faces to watch out for in the future?’ With the wealth of learning opportunities available on our island we wanted to meet the next Alan Sugar and Gordon Ramsay. We also spoke to the charming Jason Moriarty, Chief Officer at Commerce and Employment, about his local roots and plans for the Digital Greenhouse, where the next generation of digital entrepreneurs will be nurtured. The Arts Commission is holding an exhibition this month featuring the portrait work of six young local artists, on the verge of leaving sixth form. We asked the students to tell us the stories behind their work and we are certain that they will captivate your imaginations as much as they did ours. In the business section you will find a synopsis on Dorfmeister Studios, founded by self-taught creative Karl Dorfner. He is in the business of creating 4D videos and recently produced a music video for local band Buffalo Huddleston – congratulations on their recent win for best unsigned act at the Best of British Awards. It’s been an inspiring month at Gallery propelling us to think about how we can develop what we do and make the magazine even better for you, our readers. We ask you to give us five minutes of your time and complete our Gallery survey, you might even win a bottle of bubbles, but what’s more you’ll have a say in evolving one of the most genuine mouthpieces of our flourishing community. We look forward to hearing what you have to say. Claud @Claudarelli

What your weirdest fear/phobia?

If you could have one superpower what would it be and why?

What’s been the most embarrassing moment in your life?

Teleportation. Living on Guernsey, it would save me a fortune in airfares!

Not sure what has been my most embarrassing moment but my middle name is ‘Westham’ - yes the football team...

Gallery’s editorial assistant

I have a weird phobia of people brushing their teeth in front of me. The sound of the bristles scratching against their teeth makes gives me shivers. I have to go in another room. I know, I am very odd…

Your funniest nickname? Tiff Toff Anna Frying Panna… My dad’s favourite thing to call me, even these days!

What animal best describes you? I would like to think I am similar to a wolf. Wild, slightly mysterious and free spirited.

Writer, explorer

If you could pick up Guernsey and place it anywhere where would you put it? New Zealand is one of the most beautiful and interesting countries I’ve visited but too far away from Guernsey, so I’d move us to them and enjoy the best of both worlds.

What word do you love the most and why? Omnishambles. Coined by the BBC’s The Thick of It and one of the latest entries to the Oxford English Dictionary. When everything’s falling apart it’s very satisfying and better than swearing!

What’s your favourite song at the moment? Jason Derulo - Cheyenne - can you guess why? The song lyrics are also pretty hilarious, all about boys - tee hee..

Would you rather be a cat or dog and why? Definitely a dog because they have more personality and are more fun!

BEHIND THE SCENES

This month we decided to shoot a contrast to last month’s futuristic editorial by going with a more classic style, inspired by a beautiful new range of autumn season clothing provided by the consistently stylish Katie at Free Love boutique, giving us a ‘Mad Men’ vintage feel. Interesting and unique locations that haven’t been used before can prove a little tricky on our small island, but fortunately the old Guernsey Tyres site in the Bordage was kindly made available to us by Qube Developments, and provided a wonderfully stylish backdrop to fit this month’s theme of ‘develop’ perfectly. Vintage wallpapers stripped back naturally over time to reveal crumbling

UPFRONT

paintwork, raw floorboards almost falling away underfoot and dilapidated window frames gave a wonderful rawness to contrast with the luxurious elegance of the clothing. The beautifully long-legged Nadine Davison proved to be the perfect model for us this month, exuding style and class, which was accentuated by her classically inspired hair and makeup provided by our talented hair and makeup artist, Shanine Levrier. To achieve the soft, contrasted feel of the shoot I used only natural light and made use of the large, old windows on location, positioning Nadine in areas of light and shade and shooting with a shallow depth

of field. We had a great shoot this month and a lot of fun as usual, hope you like the results! Best wishes Simon B-H Visit pg. 42 to see the full shoot.

MY ISLAND

Jason Moriarty Words: Tom Bradshaw

Proud Guernseyman Jason Moriarty seemingly works in his ideal job. With a passion for promoting the island coupled with impressive business and commercial acumen he is perfectly suited to the role of Chief Officer of Commerce and Employment. The 40 year old confesses that rarely a day passes when he hasn’t spent time at work. But he packs a lot into his personal life too – he’s a regular at fitness training, a keen runner and makes sure he spends time with his family and friends. ‘It’s a real privilege for me to work in a role which is all about working with and for businesses in Guernsey. I love being an ambassador for my island and convincing people as to why Guernsey is such a good place to run a business, live and work.’ Commerce and Employment’s remit is firmly focused around economic development across all sectors. It has responsibility for a vast range of affairs from financial services, the Dairy, Sea Fisheries, the States vet and company registration to exciting new areas including the Digital Greenhouse and Locate Guernsey. Jason leads a diverse department with a personable management style, with the aim of getting the best out of his staff and building strong relationships with industry. ‘I’m reliant on expert staff in techni-

cal areas as well as a team that will drive home wider developments. Being able to provide leadership around such diverse areas is extremely interesting and sometimes challenging.’ An only child, he was born and bred in Guernsey to local parents Heather and Morris and attended Vale School followed by Grammar. The family has always lived in the north of the island. He recalls a very happy childhood, with memories of jumping off the pier at Les Amarreurs and tea on the beach at L’Ancresse, among lots of fun family time growing up. After finishing his A levels Jason attended the University of Birmingham and studied Geography. On returning to Guernsey he achieved a place on the civil service graduate scheme. Over four years he completed a range of placements

in different government areas, learning different skills and disciplines. The programme continues to this day. ‘I had a fantastic experience which really kick-started my career and I’m always keen to encourage and support new entrants on schemes and rising talent within our organisation and community.’ Jason went on to spend a further 10 years in a number of different business development, policy and marketing roles in the public sector. In 2010 he was appointed Director of Marketing and Tourism for VisitGuernsey. ‘Across my career I have spent a lot of time off island promoting Guernsey and working with partners looking to invest in the island. This senior role was a milestone for me as it brought together all my experience and skills to date.

FEATURE

How do you like to spend your days off? I spend most of my free time catching up with family and friends. I still have best friends from my school days, friends from university and others I have met through various travels. It is really important to me to keep in touch. A sign of getting older I think, but I have also become mildly obsessed with gardening and this is where I get thinking time as well as relaxation.

Do you have any hobbies? I love running and have a few marathons and half marathons under my belt. Last year I completed a big project renovating my house, working with great local contractors on whom I absolutely relied, as my knowledge and ability were limited. This consumed my time for well over a year. It was a good experience but hard work. I’m delighted with the results, I learnt lots and am loving my new home.

What do you enjoy most about working in the civil service? It’s the breadth of opportunities and diversity of what I am involved in.

What are Guernsey’s best assets? Its natural beauty and dramatic and varied coastline, as well as the great community spirit – in general terms the community is very generous and charitable.

If you could change one thing about Guernsey what would it be? I don’t think we celebrate our successes enough, certainly from a business perspective. We are too modest and there are so many hidden treasures that we don’t talk about.

What is your favourite food? I am a vegetarian and I love vegetable Thai green curry.

Where is your local? Slightly unconventional, but I’m going to say Woodies at the Picket House. I get a strong large white coffee from there every morning, rain or shine.

What quote sums you up? ‘Treat others how you would like to be treated.’

What inspires you?

‘I really benefited working across different businesses, which gave me a real commercial perspective on things. This really helps me with my job today and linking this back to Government business.’ He was appointed to his current position in 2012. Alongside his main role Jason is a non-executive director of Guernsey Finance, Startup Guernsey and the GTA University Centre. He also currently has a seat at the table on the corporate senior management team of the States, including a role as ambassador for customer service. ‘This is a new challenge for me and something I am very excited about. It is all about the public sector reform agenda over the next 10 years and it’s a privilege to be playing a key role in this.’

People who take the initiative to go the extra mile. I also love it when people go out of their way to help others or make some gesture to brighten up their day, especially when it us unexpected. This inspires me both in work and in my personal life too.

What does Guernsey’s future look like? It looks bright, but as a community we need to keep reinventing ourselves. That said, the entrepreneurial spirit that I have been witnessing of late in Guernsey is very impressive.

Which charities do you support? I am Chairman of the Guernsey Teenage Cancer Trust. It is really important for teenagers and young people to have access to age-appropriate care and treatment if they are faced with such a difficult time.

What song would the soundtrack to the story of your life? There are several songs that resonate with me for different aspects of my life, but if I were to pick one it would be the blues song by Eric Bibb called Don’t Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down.

GUERNSEY WEATHER FOX

Stop and smell the fireworks Words: Guernsey Weather Fox

It’s been over a month since the nights started to grow longer than the days, but don’t despair, because it is only towards the end of next month that the days will stop shrinking and start growing again. I’m afraid we have to wait a further three months for the days to once again outgrow the nights. Except for swapping to the southern hemisphere, there is nothing we can do to hurry things along, so let’s just put on the right clothes and get stuck in. There are so many ways to enjoy the darker months (although I think that a new convention of four-hour lunch breaks would massively facilitate the task). However frustrating the lack of daylight may be, I defy anyone not to be intoxicated by a good hard sniff of the air on a still November evening. I’m not sure of the precise chemistry, but Mother Earth must be oozing something heady into the atmosphere, as she drinks the black-gold cordial of the decomposed summer. Indeed, when I expand my diaphragm and flare my nostrils, a cold blast just pummels the back of my skull, as though there’s just empty space in there. But almost instantly, my brain reminds me of its existence, by projecting a high-speed montage of images and tightening the cord in my spine until all the little hairs stand up on my arms and neck. Like déjà vu, I just can’t tell if it’s a memory or a premonition, but I find myself longing to stand by a bonfire, squeezing a mug of something hot, munching an XXXO hotdog (O for onions of course) and most

20

“ I was fascinated to learn that the Hindu festival of light, Diwali, also occurred at the same time of year as Bonfire Night, give or take a week...”

GUERNSEY WEATHER FOX

importantly getting high as a rocket on every lungful of that cold November air. It would be easy to say that this romantic feeling is sparked by some familiar smell or sensory combination that takes me back to childhood. Well that seems like a satisfactory explanation to me, however, I do wonder if there is more to it than that. As children we used to ask obvious questions, but we soon forgot about them, becoming bored of unsatisfactory answers, for example: who created God? What’s on the other side of the universe? etc etc. Well I was raised in the UK and I’d never heard of Budloe, so a couple of my pesky questions were: ‘Did people have fireworks night before Guy Fawkes?’ and ‘Do other countries, that couldn’t give a monkey’s about Guy Fawkes, have a bonfire night at the beginning of November?’ Well this article isn’t long enough to get to the bottom of that, but it’s clearly another case of cultural and religious borrowing/theft of each other’s festivities. For example, Budloe is thought to have predated the failed famous Catholic rebel, and it’s very hard to be specific about dates back then. After all, the Gregorian Calendar was only 23 years old when the gunpowder plot was exposed, and even that number is hard to trust, considering that the powers that were would occasionally simply remove days or entire weeks in order to force the square peg of Christianity into the round hole of harmonious planetary and stellar motions. Budloe’s origins are believed to have been Viking. The old burning of longboats morphed into the burning of a Yule log and it was believed to signify cleansing at the end of

the year, so it probably occurred closer to the winter solstice. So that festival seems to have diffused into about three separate celebrations over the past few centuries: Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year. All very interesting, but bringing it back to November, I was fascinated to learn that the Hindu festival of light, Diwali, also occurred at the same time of year as Bonfire Night, give or take a week. The reason that festival shifts slightly, from year to year, is because it isn’t pinned to a date or even a particular day of the week. It might be convenient when it’s on a Friday or a Saturday, but more importantly it has to occur on the darkest night of that particular new moon, so that people can make as much light as possible (in a very similar way to Budloe) to signify the triumph of light over darkness, or more specifically Rama-Chandra (Vishnu’s seventh avatar) over the demon king Ravana. These different November festivals all share common elements, and they all seem to reflect this human desire to do something quite opposite to hibernation. Which reminds me to remind you, don’t forget to check your bonfires for sleeping hedgehogs and other such critters, preferably don’t build them so early that they

FEATURE

might attract our little friends. As we go through this month, whether it be Budloe, the new moon of the 11th (Diwali), or any other night, don’t forget to enjoy the darkness at some point. Put a torch in your pocket and walk home instead of ordering a taxi, let your pupils dilate and your skin tingle before you get back into that warm house. The long range forecast for the month is just too uncertain to say whether it will be predominantly mild, wet and windy, or cool, dry and crisp. Either way, seek out those special moments, and feel free to send me your photos, they might even make it into next month’s article.

He went to the College’s drop-in sessions to join in with the catering apprentices and got totally hooked. ‘I finished my business studies course and decided I wanted to go into an apprenticeship and learn everything there was to learn about cooking,’ says Travis. ‘I thought the best way to do this was through an apprenticeship and going to work in an actual kitchen.’ Travis is committed to spending the next three years training but is hoping to travel around the world to learn more about different cuisines. ‘I have a real love for Thai food. I love everything about it, from the colours to the herbs, spices and textures and their presentation is fabulous,’ says Travis. ‘I would love to open my own restaurant, maybe bring a bit of Thailand back to Guernsey.’ Travis has only just started his course but Manager for Hospitality and Catering Steve Bacon has already marked him out as a high flier. He says they set high standards for students at the College in order to prepare them for the real work of work. ‘The bottom line is that we are teaching them to do things by the book so we are always working at extremely high standards to get them in the know.’

Music student Aspiring singer-songwriter Jesse Byrne epitomises what the School of Popular Music is all about, says its founder Tyler Edmonds. The 15 year old - one of the 200 students with the school – regularly performs at its events, wowing audiences with his soulful voice and unique take on covering modern hits. Originally a pianist, Jesse switched to guitar 18 months ago. ‘I love it - it’s easy to play, I like the sound and it gives me

24

the ability to accompany myself singing.’ He has lessons with Tyler every Friday and spends hours each week rehearsing in his bedroom. Jesse explains that performing is a rush. ‘The more you do it the more confident you get, and it’s a great feeling to hold people’s attention and have them listening to your music.’ To Tyler Jesse is a great example of what the school is all about. ‘He is getting to a stage now where he is really enjoying performing. I love performing myself and it’s great to have the opportunity to share that experience with other aspiring musicians. He has a real knack of taking modern songs and putting his own unique style on them. He plays songs that I don’t even like but I love his versions of them.’ The School of Popular Music offers tuition in a full range of musical instruments and singing. It has just moved into new premises above Kendall Guitars.

Head of Creative Arts Faculty, Elizabeth College sam o’neill

Year 13 student It was only when Sam O’Neill, a year 13 student at Elizabeth College, dropped Art in year 9 that he realised how much he enjoyed it. ‘I picked it back up at GCSE and now I’m doing it at A level,’ he says. Adam Stephens, Head of the Creative Arts Faculty, was delighted to welcome Sam back, particularly when, incredibly, he achieved full marks in his GCSE and did it again at AS level. Sam especially enjoys painting but has also experimented with installation: a

self-portrait made from laser-cut ply was recently shown at Six of the Best, an exhibition at Candie Museum’s greenhouse. This piece was partly inspired by Columbian artist Yosman Botero but the education programme based around the Gate House Gallery, Elizabeth’s College’s own exhibition space, has provided further inspiration. Sam is currently planning a collaboration with German artist-in-residence Philipp Valenta. Adam is impressed by Sam’s talent and attitude: ‘He’s an outstanding student in terms of his ability and also his work ethic; he has a real determination to succeed and he really listens to advice and takes it on board.’ Sam is hoping to do an art foundation degree at Falmouth, with a view to possibly pursuing a career in product design. Adam believes the future is bright: ‘The creative industries here are burgeoning and there’s an increasing demand for people like Sam.’

“ Emma is a fantastic example of how Young Enterprise helps young people develop and apply real business skills.” — Mark Ogier

The Athlete paul ingrouille

Coach, Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club ed mason

Athlete At the tender age of 16 Ed Mason has already shown tremendous athletic promise, having won the National Steeplechase Championships and taken home a silver medal in the 3,000 metres steeplechase at this year’s Island Games, making him the youngest Guernsey competitor to take home a medal in an endurance event.

The Eutrepreneur u

Area Board Member, Young Enterprise emma etheredge

Student Recognised as one of the standout achievers in the Guernsey Young Enterprise last year, 17-year-old Emma Etheredge has praised the scheme for confirming her desire to pursue a career in business. Run annually, the charitable programme offers teenagers in education the opportunity to form and operate a trading company, with access to expert advice from volunteer advisers from the local business community. The Grammar School student, who is

26

currently sitting A Levels in business studies, economics, media studies and English literature, was Managing Director of Young Enterprise company Vida. Its main product was Bailiwick Trumps, a local take on the card game Top Trumps. Emma was always interested in business: ‘Young Enterprise convinced me I wanted to pursue a commercial career. All the advisers were very inspiring. It is a fantastic opportunity I’d recommend to anyone.’ She has since been invited to join the local Young Enterprise Area Board, a role which sees her help with all aspects of the scheme’s administration and logistics, including adviser training, marketing and PR. Long-standing Young Enterprise volunteer and Area Board member Mark Ogier, a director of Longport Group, said, ‘Emma is a fantastic example of how Young Enterprise helps young people develop and apply real business skills.’

Ed has represented Hampshire in track and cross-country competitions since he was 12 but he only took up steeplechasing in 2014. Since then he’s won county, regional and national medals, often competing against athletes a year older than him. ‘I enjoy the challenge of the steeplechase and the competitiveness of the event in my age group. In the future I would like to go to university in America and hopefully pursue a career in athletics. My first aim is to make it to the European Juniors next year and the Commonwealth Games in 2018,’ Ed tells us. Paul Ingrouille is one of Ed’s coaches at the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club, where he trains at least three or four days a week. He says developing slowly and steadily has been key to Ed’s success: ‘The UK scene is littered with early maturing athletes who struggle to develop past their early teens. Ed’s progress has been steady and the result of his hard work and commitment to supplementary things. It is very rewarding to see him progressing past athletes who seemed beyond the horizon a few years ago.’

Keeping Guernsey beaches clean

Barclays taking action for children

A giant piece of driftwood and a huge fish were amongst the finds uncovered when 1st Central staff and volunteers from the Guernsey College Football Academy cleaned Petit Port Beach.

Action for Children is the latest local charity to benefit from Barclays’ support.

The insurance company, which is headquartered in Guernsey, carried out the clean as part of its focus on health and wellbeing. Around 38 adults and children, including volunteers from the GCFA, took part and collected piles of rubbish from the beach and from the bottom of the steps. ‘We are trying to promote health and wellbeing in our office and so the opportunity of all those steps was too good to miss,’ said Mike Leonard, 1st Central’s co-founder and Deputy Group CEO. 1st Central is planning to make beach cleans a regular occurrence next year, and the company is also looking into adopting a beach.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey Scout Association was given £500 towards planting trees in newly acquired fields and tidying up a pond area. Since the fund’s inception the Channel Islands Co-operative has paid out over £280,000 to assist environmental causes in the islands.

GROW A BEARD IF YOU CAN

Support your local growers this November Words: Nichole Sweetsur

Men of Guernsey - put down your razor and step away from the shaver! This month cancer charity Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) is looking for ‘500 good men’ to take part in a Guernsey ‘beard-off’. Yes, it’s time to get grizzly, all in the name of charity. The charity is encouraging men to grow a beard and help raise £40,000 to purchase a piece of high-tech equipment that will enable Template Prostatic biopsies to be performed on-island. ‘We need 500 good men to grow a beard this November,’ explains Owen Cole, MSG Consultant Urologist and MUG Council member. ‘The money raised by MUG’s Beard Up and Man Up campaign will contribute to the purchase of the specialist equipment we need to perform Template Prostatic biopsies on-island.’ ‘The Template biopsy technique has been developed in order to provide more accurate and extensive sampling of the whole prostate where cancer is suspected.

32

Template biopsies may be recommended in certain medical circumstances and currently men are sent to Southampton for their biopsies. Unfortunately the wait for this is about five months and men have to stay overnight for the procedure.’ Owen continues: ‘Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in Guernsey and this equipment, together with the specialist oncology nurse, also supported by MUG, will make a real difference to patients here in Guernsey.’ Registration to take part in the beard-off is £20.00 and it’s hoped that each of the 500 bearded wonders will raise sponsorship money as well. ‘This November we’d like all islanders to support their “local growers”. This will help us to ensure the money raised has tangible benefits for the men in our local community,’ says Male Uprising Guernsey founder Trevor Kelham. ‘It’s time to beard up and man up,’ continues Trevor. ‘But don’t be limited to a chin warmer or chinstrap, get creative with mutton-chops, sideburns or a goatee. We hope to see 500 islanders stop

shaving for the month of November and keep it local. Remember, if you are facially folically challenged you can always sponsor a friend.’ The charity has teamed up with the Fermain Valley Hotel, one of Guernsey’s most luxurious four-star hotels, and men’s barbers Manzur to encourage a little friendly competition amongst the beard growers. Anyone who raises over £200.00 should post their picture on the MUG Facebook page. Tim Coates of the Fermain Valley Hotel, Owen Cole and Trevor Kelham will judge entrants to find the MUG Beard of the Year Award. The winning whiskers will be rewarded with a beard trim and haircut at Manzur and an overnight stay for two at the Fermain Valley Hotel. The generous prize includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival, £50 dining credit which can be used in either Ocean or the Rock Garden Steakhouse and breakfast for two the following morning. ‘It’s time to beard up,’ urges Trevor. ’The money we raise stays on the island to benefit local men. Grow local, support local!’

The very best in stand-up comedy returns to Guernsey this November when the Sure Festival of Comedy presents its Bonus Weekend. Stand up Guernsey will take place on Thursday 12th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th November in the familiar surroundings of The Johnson Suite at Les Rocquettes Hotel in St. Peter Port. “We like to keep the festival momentum going to satisfy local comedy fans’ appetite for laughter,” said festival coorganiser Nick Creed. “Previous bonus shows have proved extremely popular and we already have some exciting plans for the main festival in May 2016 which will be its tenth anniversary year.” Sure has been headline sponsor for the festival for the last five years and Nick said it’s been a great association which has helped them to develop one of the island’s favourite events. “Having Sure onboard means we can continue to punch above our weight in our ongoing quest to put a smile on the face of Guernsey!” Headlining the November shows is veteran of the UK comedy circuit Sean Meo. He’s well known as one of the sharpest, freshest and most consistently spoton gag merchants in the business and regularly headlines top venues such as Jongleurs and the Comedy Store. Time Out magazine said ‘he can turn out intelligent material with a speed that many other comics can only gasp at’ Also on the bill is accomplished and likeable comedian Jo Romero. She’s a former Daily Telegraph new comedian of the year and this August wowed audiences at the Edinburgh Festival with her new play ‘Scenes of a Sensual Nature’. Joining the line-up is Scottish come-

dian and impressionist Geoff Boyz. He’s been described by ID Magazine as one of the most versatile comedians on the London circuit. And holding the show together with his latest observations on island life is regular compere Geoff Whiting. He’s been described as one of Britain’s funniest men by the Radio Times. As a comedy booker and promoter, he’s opened over 100 clubs in the UK and books comedians for performances all over Europe. As a comedian on the circuit, Geoff sees promising new acts a lot earlier than most bookers. He gave Jimmy Carr his first-ever paid spot and has been instrumental in launching many other household comedy names such as Russell Howard, Sarah Millican, Russell Kane and John Bishop. “The Sure Festival of Comedy is a brilliant opportunity for local comedy fans to see some of the top comedians on the circuit right here in Guernsey,” said Renée Jordaan, Marketing and PR Manager from Sure. “The Bonus Weekend has a top line up and it’s another chance for family, friends and work colleagues to come together and have a laugh. “Sure is pleased to sponsor this popular local event and we’re looking forward to continuing our support and celebrating the festival’s tenth anniversary with some great comedians in 2016!” “We believe this is another great lineup,” said Nick. “We are proud to be attracting some of the best known names in the business and strongly advise people to book their tickets as soon as possible.” Tickets for all shows are available now, priced £20.00, exclusively online at www.happyci.com

URBANITY FASHION SHOW

Urbanity Fashion Show Photography Cheyenne Wylie The Event: As ‘fashion week’ kicked off around the globe earlier last month Guernsey hosted its own catwalk show with a stylish evening of high-end fashion, hair and makeup, supported by various local businesses and held at Urban Kitchen. The event was organised as an Autism365 fundraiser, raising money for local charity Autism Guernsey. The Highlights: DJ Oneofakind welcomed guests as they sipped on complimentary Champagne and nibbled deliciously crafted canapés. The FROW (fashion speak for ‘front row’ reserved only for the most fashion savvy) grabbed their seats as Nu-Concept Director Andrew Wicks took over the decks with his selection of deep and rounded beats, heralding the start of a very enjoyable evening. Male and female models highlighting the cream of Guernsey’s gene pool wowed the crowds with a captivating showcase of some of our island’s finest fashions and cleanest cuts. The talent from local Aveda hair salon Nu-Concept cemented their reputation for cutting-edge hair styling by creating a range of on-trend looks The Crowd: The evening was well attended by a warm and receptive audience, vocalising their appreciation with cheering whistles of support for the music, models and cultural couture on display. Our events reporter spotted the glamorous Dawn Glass with husband Ian, Julia and Bob Cooney, Nadia Newton, the Eisenbergs, Sam Edwards, Kelly Fay, Emma Stafford-Bell and Claire Allen from StartUp Guernsey to namedrop just a few. In addition to an evening of fun a wellsupported raffle raised over £600 for Autism Guernsey. Whoever said fashion is for the frivolous?

BECKY ROWE

New Opening Becky Rowe Jewellery Photography Tiffany Matthews The Event: With guests spilling out of the entrance of Becky Rowe’s new jewellery shop, it was obvious that the launch of her brand new collections were a huge success. With velvet animal heads, paintings of monkeys and giant cocktail glasses filled with Haribo, it was a real feast for the eyes and definitely an event to remember! The Highlights: Becky’s stunning collections did not disappoint and guests were also treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of her studio to see where the magic happens. From bespoke jewellery to candles, Becky is a designer with many talents. Skully and Angel Wings are two of her most recognised collections; they combine her personality and attention for detail in a selection of beautiful pieces. With her stunning stone necklaces being a huge eye catcher on the opening night, we can clearly see that her brain is bursting with plenty more new ideas and we should definitely ‘watch this space’ – especially with Christmas around the corner. The Crowd: Gallery spotted a few familiar faces all enthusing how ‘blown away’ they were not only with the jewellery but with her stunning scented candle range, and confirming that they will definitely be writing Becky’s name on their Christmas lists this year. Becky Rowe is now located at My-D House, Grande Rue, St Martin.

NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management ‘Night at the Movies’ The Event: For the second year running clients were treated to a Night at the Movies courtesy of Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management. A screening of ‘The Lego Movie’ took place on a high-definition 12sqm screen in the unique location of the Victorian walled garden at Sausmarez Manor. Despite rain showers 150 people attended along with their families, donning waterproofs and sheltering under a sea of umbrellas which were handed out at the event. The Highlights: This was a fantastic way to end the summer with good food and family entertainment. There was a festival feel as guests spread out on picnic blankets and deckchairs and were treated to BBQ, candy floss, fizzy drinks, Mr Whippy ice cream and plenty of popcorn. Featuring a host of stars including Chris Pratt and Will Ferrell, ‘The Lego Movie’ is an award-winning adventure comedy set in a universe populated by Lego people. It has gone on to win a number of awards worldwide and grossed £468.7million at the box office. The Crowd: A little rain couldn’t dampen spirits (or appetites!). The film was certainly a crowd pleaser with the young (and the not so young) giving it glowing reviews. It was a great chance for staff and clients of Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management to relax with their families and sing along to the infectious theme tune ‘Everything is Awesome’. Andy Finch, Head of Wealth Management in Guernsey, commented, ‘This year was another big success. Gloomy weather is always a worry for outside events but the crowd smiled through the rain and enjoyed the delicious range of summer food and drinks. It’s great that we could show such a popular film which all the family could enjoy together.’

Yew look good Words: Nichole Sweetsur

If you want good quality men’s clothing and like buying labels that can’t be found in other shops on the high street then head to the new menswear shop in the Pollet – Yew. Yew was opened by Manzur Asghar, one of Guernsey’s best-loved barbers, a few months ago and word of mouth is starting to spread. He’s handpicked a small but well-chosen selection of European labels that you won’t spot anywhere else on the island. ‘I’ve been a hairdresser for 30 years and I’ve spent that time observing what men wear and the kind of clothes that they go back to time and time again,’ explains Manzur. Clearly Manzur has a talent for fashion. Prices are very affordable and the clothes are seriously good quality. The rails are full of stylish smart-casual gear that will take gents from the office to the bar and back again.

52

01

Manzur grew up around menswear, watching his father who was a tailor from Pakistan. ‘He tailor-made suits and I regret not learning the craft now,’ he confesses. Manzur certainly understands what makes a good cut and quality fabric because the collections he has chosen are all well made and the kind of quality that will wash well and last for years. The collections are well edited and range from well-cut, butter-soft jeans to t-shirts you’ll want to collect, polo shirts, jackets and shirts. ‘I’ve picked brands from across Europe and tried to keep everything really affordable,’ explains Manzur. Gallery loves the MAC jeans, a fashionable brand in Germany that is already proving popular in Guernsey. The jeans, which are made from durable denim in classic styles, like the straightleg Arne, are very popular in dark wash or soft faded blue (£80.00). Manzur also recommends the Denim Is Everything brand. Known as D.I.E, these jeans are also around £85.00 a pair and have easy or tapered fits with great stitching details. This Brit brand has its home in cool Clerkenwell and the brand’s vibe stays true to denim’s roots. Choose from dark indigo, rinse or worn-in wash – they all look good and will look even better with wear. 6th Sense has a modern take on tweed with its modern and well-made jackets. A clear favourite is the affordable navy tweed jacket with suede patches which is a steal at £149.00. Bertoni, a Danish

STYLE

For a night out or a more casual look pick up a couple of Swade’s polo shirts. Sharp, original styles and great attention to detail make these an easy choice for weekend wear or a night out at an affordable £34.99. Manzur has tapped into more European style with Danish brand Blend. Yew is stocking their t-shirts, which are cool but not brash. The perfect antidote for anyone who is over the ubiquitous logoed tee, especially as they are a snip at £14.99. Based in Derby, Hawkins & Shepherd is bringing British style and top-notch tailoring to the boardroom. These guys don’t cut corners, using quality fabrics, superb craftsmanship and quirky details like contrast cuffs. Slip on a Giordano jacket and gents are good to go. The jackets have great attention to detail and look stylish with jeans or chinos. Other brands include Eden Park, a French label that also offers shirts, chinos and soft, naturally faded jeans. There’s Baileys for jumpers and Ikon shoes – heritage-style brogues which will complete any outfit. Soft leather wallets, card holders and money clips are very tempting and a silver hip flask is a musthave for every man. Manzur has tracked down very wearable collections and brands you might not yet know, but will most certainly love. Guernsey’s newest menswear store is friendly, relaxed and has affordable, great quality clothes – a winning combination. There are no rules for nails this season so pick a polish, anything goes. Keep it neutral with a nude or wearit-with-anything grey; alternatively choose moody blues, autumnal berries or shimmering metallics. Camouflage green and khaki are having a fashion moment and this shade works well on nails too. Dark, claret red is always a winner in winter or change it up with the deepest purple. Rodarte and Victoria Beckham went nude and natural for their catwalk nails and Chanel showed two-tone, but whatever the colour the shape is short and round and the finish is glossy. If your polish isn’t lasting, flaking and peeling nails could be the reason. Combat this with an application of Jessica Fusion (£18.50. BEAUTY

DEVELOPING GOOD HABITS

Developing good habits Words: Nichole Sweetsur Young skins have special needs. Raging hormones wreak havoc with teenage skin and developing a good skincare routine is the first step towards a clearer complexion. Award-winning beauty writer Alice Hart Davis wrote two books with her daughters about looking and feeling good. She went on to create a line of skincare for teenagers (and the rest of us), appropriately named Good Things. Who better for Gallery to quiz about making sure your lot are growing up skincare savvy? gallery: Why is it important for teens to develop a regular skincare routine? alice: Teenage skin is a bit all over the place thanks to the hormonal rollercoaster of puberty. Having a basic skincare routine gives skin some consistency and helps it stay calmer than if it is usually ignored, then randomly subjected to being scrubbed or doused with spot cream. gallery: That makes sense, so when is a good age to start and what are the basics you’d recommend? alice: Whenever your child shows an interest in skincare - that could be age 10 or 18. You don’t want to make it seem like a chore, so keep it simple. The basics are a creamy cleanser and a light moisturiser, even for oily skin. It might sound counter-intuitive, but you don’t want to use a harsh foaming face wash as this strips all the natural oils out of the skin, which will then try to rebalance itself by producing even more oil. Moisturiser helps keep the skin barrier in good condition; that helps keep dirt and bacteria from getting into the pores. gallery: What is the one skincare essential that transcends age or generations? alice: Sunscreen. Whatever age you are, it will reduce the amount of damage that ultraviolet light inflicts on your

60

skin, which will help it stay healthier and look better for the future. I say ‘ultraviolet light’ rather than ‘sunshine’ because a lot of this damage is done not by the ‘burning’ UVB rays that get going when the sun is hot, but by the ‘ageing’ UVA rays which are present in daylight all year round. It’s a topic that bores youngsters silly, so we have added UVA and UVB protection into our Manuka Honey Daily Moisturiser so that is covered, too. gallery: You’ve left out some typical skincare ingredients, why? alice: We’ve kept the formulas free of sulphates (the foaming agents sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate) as they can irritate sensitive skin; we prefer not to use paraben-based preservatives as these are something consumers are keen to avoid, and we keep clear of mineral oils which are great for keeping moisture in the skin but which can provoke breakouts in young skin that is prone to blemishes. gallery: What do your two daughters use from the range? alice: Molly, who’s at uni, will use anything she can raid from my sample shelves; Beth is a fiend for face masks and likes the Manuka Honey Radiance Face Mask. gallery: What do you use? And why? alice: I’m horribly spoiled with my job - I get to try all the latest products as they are launched, but yes, many of the Good Things products have a permanent place in my bathroom. These include our bestselling face wipes - they are thicker, softer and damper than other wipes out there so are brilliant to get off the worst of my makeup. The Manuka Honey Creamy Cleanser is another favourite which I’ll use after the wipes; I massage it in and remove it with a hot damp flannel. I use various fancy

high-tech skin-boosting serums, like Estée Lauder’s new Renutriv serum or Skinceuticals’ Resveratrol-BE serum and then, to stop my skin feeling dry, I’ll layer on the Good Things Argan Oil Moisture Boost Facial Serum for a shot of extra hydration. At night, I use an anti-ageing retinol serum every other night and once that has sunk in, to keep my skin moisturised and limit the irritation from the retinol, I’ll add a soothing layer of Argan Oil Time Rewind Day Cream. gallery: You’ve gone on to develop other ranges. What age is the Manuka Honey skincare aimed at? alice: It’s for young women in their 20s who want great, effective, inexpensive skincare that is a pleasure to use and which will do a brilliant job at keeping their skin clear, radiant and healthy. gallery: You’re a beauty expert, but did you learn from your daughters when you wrote the books together? alice: Oh yes! I think the main things I learned were not to over-complicate things and to go back to basics to explain why we do what we do when it comes to skincare. With adults, if you say, ‘Cleanse, tone, moisturise,’ they generally know what you are on about. Right at the beginning of the work on our first book, Molly said to me, ‘Mum, what do you mean, “cleanse” your face? Is it the same as washing? Or is it different? And do you need special stuff for it?’ All very good questions, and which deserved a proper answer. I also learned to keep it brief. If you start giving a teenager a multi-part answer they will have glazed over and then it’s game over. Good Things is available from Boots, priced from £4.49.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids play a vital role in brain health and deficiency has been linked to a decline in cognitive function. Known as the ‘building blocks’ of neuron function, omega-3 oils play an important role from cradle to grave and various studies link deficiency to depression, Alzheimer’s and anxiety. However, not all omega-3 oils are the same; those high in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) will best support brain health which is why experts are recommending squid oil supplements. Tuck into some calamari and try Bioglan Calamari Gold 1000mg. £34.99. Holland & Barrett.

NEW EATS

NEW EATS: THE ZIGGURAT

Worth the climb Words: Claud De La Mare

There’s a new hotel in town, a haven of Middle Eastern charm tucked away at the top of Constitution Steps, but don’t let the climb put you off. Gallery was invited to sample some of the dishes from their new restaurant…

The brainchild of local creative Genevieve Langford, the Ziggurat is not your average hotel; tastefully decorated with an eclectic nod towards ancient Mayan, Aztec and Middle Eastern cultures, it’s clear that a great deal of care and attention has been put into its creation. Gen explained the thinking behind the name ‘Ziggurat’: ‘When we first started talking about developing the hotel - and what we might call it - we tried to summarise what this little hotel in the heart of town made one think of. The first thing that stood out was ‘steps’! It was this that led it to be called Ziggurat. A Ziggurat is a stepped shrine, a little like a pyramid but with four sides. Each Ziggurat was devoted to a god or a goddess of the city, and ours is devoted to Ishtar - the goddess of love and war - who you will see immediately on entering the hotel.’ We are met at the door by charming Hotel Manager Paul Hanson, as if we are entering an exclusive private townhouse, and welcomed upstairs into the bar and dining room. The eye is at once drawn to the stunning views of St Peter Port and our neighbouring islands surrounding the dining area. There is something really magical about seeing land from land; perhaps it’s a trait of being a born and bred islander. You can enjoy a drink at the bar or on the large, south-facing, outside terrace

64

before you dine, perhaps taking shelter in one of the rather fun garden sheds complete with their own sound and heating systems – also perfect for late night drinking and e-shisha smoking. Or snuggle up and enjoy the view from the warmth of the cosy private dining room just next to the bar, and within shouting distance of Martin Lielbardis, their extremely well informed Bar Manager. The restaurant itself has been designed with traditional rugs and elegantly framed silver jewellery adorning the walls, rich colours and pink granite worktops creating a stylish but inviting atmosphere. Our food arrives and is almost as much of a treat for the eyes as the hotel’s interiors. Brightly coloured dishes loaded with a Middle Eastern feast that would find itself at home on any high Sultan’s banquet table. Our favourite dishes were the spiced beef and potato falafels served with Moroccan chutney, we’ve never tasted falafels so light, and the lemon and coriander couscous and sweet potato wedges took us to another level of food heaven. Sweet potato surely is the food of the gods, it must be something about the balance of sweet and savoury. The highlight of our meal had to be the lamb tagine; delicately spiced, well balanced in flavour and packed full of goodies like dried apricots and aubergine.

“ A Ziggurat is a stepped shrine, a little like a pyramid but with four sides. Each Ziggurat was devoted to a god or a goddess of the city, and ours is devoted to Ishtar - the goddess of love and war - who you will see immediately on entering the hotel. ” — Genevieve Langford

Dessert was healthy and light spicy grilled fruit skewers with a maple glaze, just perfect to finish our Moroccan feast. With full tummies we raised a Fez to Restaurant Manager Danielle Bennett in admiration. Gen explained the concept behind the menu: ‘We wanted to create something different for Guernsey and the food is a major part of that. The concept is simple, sharing and sociable. We intend to create conversation around the food and serve it up in an artistic and aesthetic style.’ Gen makes a wonderful host, ensuring her guests are well catered for, which of course they have been by her friendly and engaging team. As their website says, ‘We would love to take the time to sit down with you to share coffee, drinks, ideas and hear a little about your life story. This is our work, our passion and where we spend the majority of our time, so it is important we enjoy the Ziggurat experience as much as you do.’ You get the impression that these guys actually care about what they do and welcome you with genuine enthusiasm. The public have embraced the team’s hard work, ‘Feedback has been incredible so far. There seems to be a strong need for different things in Guernsey. When locals come up to eat and drink they say they actually feel like they have stepped out of Guernsey for the night. They sit in the garden admiring the amazing views over St Peter Port and feel slightly separated from it, in their own little oasis.’ The restaurant opens at 6:30pm for dinner, and the bar from 5pm every day. Look out for their Sunday brunches coming soon, featuring bloody Marys, good music and Sunday papers hotelziggurat.com.

EVERYDAY SUPER FOOD

RECIPE TEST

KITCHEN LIBRARY

Everyday Super Food — Jamie Oliver Words: Katie Whitford

Jamie Oliver is the latest celebrity chef to ride the wellness cookery wave with his latest bestseller, Everyday Super Food. His aim is to supply us with tasty, nutritionally balanced recipes using everyday ingredients that are sensible on the calorie count. He’s also been careful not to bust any budgets here, estimating that each portion of his recipes costs on average just £2.50. Oliver has worked with his team of nutritionists and has travelled the world to learn the secrets of longevity from its healthiest inhabitants. Rather than preaching, his philosophy is to ‘help you get it right on the food front, most of the time’ and he helpfully suggests using this book for the weekdays and espousing his Comfort Food at the weekend, as a sustainable approach. Sounds promising already. Tantalisingly photographed as ever, and with Oliver’s trademark patter, it’s

66

very easy to delve into. Mostly a collection of trustworthy recipes with a bit of healthy lifestyle advice on the side, it’s clearly organised into a no-nonsense structure of Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snacks and Drinks so we know exactly where we stand. Each page has a manageable list of ingredients, clear instructions, a calorie count and nutritional facts. It also gives an estimated time to prepare, which simplifies recipe selection (although his Portable Jam Jar Salads look scrumptious, I felt the 20 minutes’ preparation time a bit over the top for a packed lunch, but perhaps that’s just me).

It’s been really hard to choose a recipe to review as I’ve been poring over the mouthwatering options (I’ll be coming back to this volume) but I settled on the chicken & garlic bread kebabs with blood orange, spinach and feta. The ingredients are simple - I had most of them already - and the calorie count is 444kcal so suited my hubbie, who’s following Mosley’s Fast Diet and needs a modest evening meal twice a week. Usually it’s in the form of ready-made soup, so this was a real treat for once. ingredients: I was able to get everything I didn’t have already from my local shop without great expense. Blood oranges were out of season, so I used some common-or-garden ones and they did just fine. taste: Flavoursome and innovative with the enticing aromas of bay and rosemary. ease of recipe: The instructions are simple and Oliver’s cheeky banter is fun to follow; don’t forget to ‘muddle in’ a tablespoon of oil and make sure the chicken gets ‘super-crispy’. verdict: We enjoyed this dish and feel healthier already!

TASTING NOTES

TASTING NOTES

Try something new this Christmas… If you’re guilty of being a rather unadventurous Champagne drinker, always sticking to the big names, pushed to us in the impersonal atmosphere of the busy December supermarket as we battle to get in and out without losing our minds - then pay attention, this one’s for you! La Maison de Champagne is a boutique store for small producers of Champagne, just because you may not have heard of the name before doesn’t mean that it is any lesser in quality or taste. In fact it can often mean that more love and care has gone into the process. LMDC aims to provide the very best Champagnes from these smaller houses that cannot be found in large supermarkets or wine importers because the quantities required are much larger than the small supplier can provide. The result is that our little boutique is a

68

treasure trove of Champagne that will exceed the expectations of many of the major labels and what’s more they come without the premium price tag. The best way to sample a selection is to either come in for a tasting or sign up to the subscription to receive 24 different bottles over the course of a year. What better gift for 2016 then to take a year-long voyage into the unknown world of luxury Champagnes? No more staring at the supermarket shelves in despair. There’s a wonderful world of Champagne out there that you never knew existed; let us pop your cork and welcome you to the wonderful world of bubbles. Tastings at La Maison de Champagne are now available Monday - Friday from 5.30pm, starting at £149. Please contact info@champagne.gg or call 01481 740603 to book.

SOPHIE LE LIEVRE

ARTIST PROFILE

Behind the Scenes of Cinderella Words: Alexa Moore

Sculptor Sophie Le Lievre may only be a few years into her career but she’s already worked on high profile projects like Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella and next year’s Tarzan. However, she is never happier than when she can come back to Guernsey to work on her own projects. Gallery caught up with Sophie in her St Martin’s studio. Watching Sophie Le Lievre at work it quite quickly becomes obvious why she is in such demand on big-budget film sets. Talking about her experiences on set her hands are always busy, moulding a small lump of clay into an elaborate piece of decoration for her latest work, which is a private commission for a garden sculpture. She’s back in Guernsey after nine months working on the set for the live action Beauty and the Beast film, starring Emma Watson and due for release in 2017, which saw her work on constructing and sculpting the elaborate sets, including ballrooms, villages, and forests, as part of a large construction team. It was one of Sophie’s tutors who suggested that she try her hand at sculpting and enrol on the Technical Arts and Special Effects course at Wimbledon College of Art. ‘I had a fantastic tutor and I really owe her for explaining the work you can do in film, I didn’t even know it was possible to do that sort of thing,’ said Sophie. There she learnt a variety of techniques and skills, including prosthetics, model-making and puppetry, and was taught by several talented tutors, including sculptors from Madame Tussauds. After graduating with a first-class honours degree, Sophie worked for a few model-making and special effects companies on everything from ice cream adverts to huge live events. During this time Sophie was part of a team rigging lights in Fatboy Slim’s giant octopus at the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, and was also involved in making the huge sleeping baby and Lord Voldemort’s hands. But her break in film came when she was approached by her current boss

70

who had got in touch with Wimbledon College looking for graduates who could sculpt for her next film. The project was Cinderella and Sophie’s impressive work has led to more film work for her in the last few years. ‘Every single year it’s got better in different ways because I’m learning more but I also have more responsibility,’ she said. Cinderella called for large elaborate sets and detailed sculpture and was shot in the legendary Pinewood Studios. You can see Sophie’s work on the intricate gold embellishments of the palace gates and doors, wooden staircase details and stone relief sculpture at Cinderella’s house, set into the walls. ‘A lot of what we make is only panned over in the film, so you don’t often get to see the finer details,’ she said. The sculpting department worked on Cinderella’s carriage, large stone figures and huge fountains in the palace courtyards. ‘People might think a lot of the sets and backgrounds are CGI but much of it is actually handmade.’ Sophie says she is lucky to have worked on films with plenty of embellishment where she has been able to do a lot of work in clay. Her work on films is, of course, dictated by what’s needed for the look and feel of the set design but Sophie said she does sometimes have some artistic licence. There are great designers, architects and draughtsmen on the films, but when it comes to drawing certain sculptures, they leave it down to reference photos for the sake of speed and ask for a mixture, which does stretch your creative abilities as an artist.’ Sophie’s private clients often have some ideas about the kind of artwork they want but they rely on her creativity to bring the project to life. ‘If someone says, “I’ve got this space

but I don’t know what to do with it” or they would like a garden sculpture and they tell me they like spheres or the shape of a leaf, I can work that into something for them. I’ll do some drawings and see if they like it and go from there.’ From Hollywood all the way back to Guernsey, Sophie’s work in film has offered her some fantastic opportunities, but she’s never happier than when she can work on her private commission work as it gives her the opportunity to be in complete creative control. ‘I love just messing round and coming up with ideas and making my own things.’ If you’re interested in commissioning Sophie for some private work you can contact her on s.r.lelievre@gmail.com.

Our intrepid photographer Simon Boucher Harris was on holiday in the beautiful Bali this month, and proving that there is no rest for the wicked he kindly sent us this stunning shoot which took place in a paddy field. We love the contrast between the rural backdrop and the exotic opulence of the model’s dress. ARTIST REVIEW

Generation Creative Six young local artists were selected for Faces & Figures: Student Exhibition 2015, showing at the greenhouse gallery in the Guernsey Museum at Candie Gardens. The Guernsey Arts Commission’s annual student exhibition showcases a variety of art, design and photography from the end-of-year shows, highlighting the strong creative talent consistently emerging on the island. Kindly sponsored by NatWest, this year’s work focused on experiments with portraiture used not just to provide a likeness but also to evoke aspects of the subject’s inner self. Gallery found out the story behind each of the students’ work... BERTIE CHARMAN ELIZABETH COLLEGE

I was presented with the title of ‘Faith, Family and Community’ for my photography coursework and immediately jumped to the word ‘faith’. I knew from the start I didn’t want to look at faith in the sense of religion, but as a basis of having faith in something or relying on something it was appealing to me photographically. I decided to ask my friends and family what they relied on or had faith in and then photographed them. I felt the photographs themselves would’ve been incomplete without a personal message or quote from the subjects involved, therefore I asked each person I photographed for a few lines to better inform the viewer why they had faith in what they did. I ended my project by taking self-portraits of what I myself had faith in. GILES QUIGLEY ELIZABETH COLLEGE

My relationship with my father is a unique one: whilst predominantly spent in a state of joy and laughter, what is calm and collected on the surface can be misleading. I see my father as a great man and my hero, although a mood lies within him and can often be triggered by a stubbed toe or a boring day at the office. The idea of my work was to present a different side of my father and challenge the viewer to think how the work affects the impression of the subject and to relay that emotion through the brushstrokes. With this work came challenges, disfiguring my father’s face to a point where he was scarcely recognisable was tricky. I’d never before had such a strong emotional attachment to a piece, taking my work to new heights. To feel somewhat vul-

My assigned brief was ‘Journeys’ so I wanted to express visually how a journey progresses and forms through time physically and emotionally. I was particularly intrigued by the idea of combining maps and human anatomy into one, thus expressing the level of development a human goes through in a specific journey. I left certain parts of my work incomplete to emphasise the fact a journey is taken over a long period of time. This also highlights the growth and personal discovery a person requires to complete their future and their persona as a whole. The overall message I wanted to convey is that a journey is not only exclusive to that one individual but also strangely inclusive to everyone else who plays a role in structuring your life.

ROSEMARY DESPRÉS GRAMMAR SCHOOL

I always strive to create work that is different, and so my whole photography project centres around animal corpses, with the aim to romanticise and present death in varying lights. A good example of my work would be my coloured pencil drawing of my cat, Richard, composed on top of a girl’s head. This piece encapsulates the role of identity and typical adolescent confusion. Recently I have used paper to design bird sculptures, these have been influenced by the artist Diana Beltran Herrera, which connote the fragility of so many birds’ plights, dipping into extinction. SAM O’NEILL LADIES’ COLLEGE/ELIZABETH COLLEGE

Having been given the topic of ‘Relationships’ to base my work upon, I decided to consider an alternative approach to the subject. The definition of relationship is ‘the way in which two or more concepts, objects or people are connected, or the state of being connected.’ In developing these ideas I was able to establish a sense of understanding of the importance of how an observer relates to the work before them, i.e. the connection between an object and a person. I felt this connection was not only dependent on what is seen, but also how it is seen – an idea from which the concept of creating an illusion-like, perspective-based work stemmed. SOFIA OGIER COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION

My final year’s show piece is dedicated to the memory of my Avó which in Portuguese means Nan. I believe that art is made with passion and in turn passion involves emotion therefore all artwork is created by emotion. For this particular piece the original idea came from the meaning of flowers. I wanted to portray the meaning behind each flower and therefore I used different types of paper to do this. For each individual flower I used the difficult techniques of Japanese origami and Kirigami. Just like real flowers my project developed from a seed of an idea, then blossomed into this beautiful memorial for my Avó.

The Talk of the Table

Whether entertaining formally in the dining room or informally in the kitchen, dressing the table thoughtfully shows that you, as the host, have made that extra effort to be ‘creative director’ for the occasion. With the Christmas season around the corner, the thought of cooking can be daunting in itself, so below are a few tips that are sure to give you and your guests joy for the season ahead. Focal Point As the focal point, I usually suggest a bunch of fresh flowers as a minimum. For added colour and texture a simple tablecloth, or placemats laid directly on the table, start to create the backdrop of your event’s story. Placemats tend to be lower in maintenance and are more versatile, as well as suitable for traditional or modern tables. I love these because there are endless permutations for mixing and matching them with coasters, embroidered napkins and napkin rings! Plates Tableware, the plates and serving dishes, can be layered into a coordinated colour scheme mixing plain and pattern, so that the plate or bowl for the starter is placed over the dinner plate, layered over a decorative charger and so forth. Whether basic, vintage or luxury, tableware can make a statement and tell a story about the host’s heritage, wedding or travels.

Glasses Stemware should feature at least a wine glass and water glass or, for more formal settings, a white wine glass, red wine goblet and champagne flute. It can be fun to mix coloured glass and crystal if it ties in with your florals. Cutlery Cutlery should include a salad and entrée fork, with knives and dessert silverware to suit what’s being served. This can be a lovely opportunity to show heirlooms, or mix and match fun pieces such as perspex or bamboo-handled cutlery.

HAVE CONFIDENCE IN A POSITIVE HOUSING MARKET In September two of the largest UK lenders announced that they would be offering 95% mortgages with rates of around 4.2% fixed for two years. Whilst this is great news for the UK market which is well on its way to recovery, and will no doubt boost confidence both in the property market and give borrowers who have been struggling to save 10% deposits a helping hand to get on the market, is it likely to happen in Guernsey? Lending in Guernsey is different from the UK with most lenders setting their criteria for the islands exclusive to that of their UK counterparts. Guernsey lenders tend to allow higher multiples of incomes with 5 times being the norm compared to 3.5 to 4 times income in the UK. That said, however, if the major UK high street lenders who have offices in Guernsey do decide to launch 95% mortgages then there is likely to be the chance that they will also look to have 95% mortgages in Guernsey. So, what impact would this have on our market? If we, as

The practice has a combined total of over 100 years of involvement in the Guernsey construction industry. brokers, have access to 95% borrowing that is sustainable for the medium to long term then this is great news for our clients. All too often we are advising clients to continue saving towards their first property which is easier said than done if you are a rent payer. If, however, clients only need a 5% deposit then this is the difference between having £15,000 in savings compared to having £30,000 in savings for a £300,000 purchase price. This would be great news for our first-time buyers and would in turn have a knock-on effect further up the property ladder because people marketing their properties to these clients would be able to sell and move on further up the property ladder, and so on for their vendors. As in the UK, the launch of a 95% mortgage would show a lenders’ confidence in the Guernsey market which would in turn give purchasers confidence which can only be a good thing. Sentiment is a major factor in any market and if the confidence is there then we will see an increase in property transactions and a return to a positive housing market. At Oracle we hope this is more a ‘when’ rather than an ‘if’ and we look forward to having some positive news in the not too distant future.

BE CONSIDERATE WHEN IMPROVING YOUR HOME If you’re thinking about spending some of your hard-earned money on home improvement projects next year, keep a few things in mind. What you’ll get back on your investment into improving your home will depend on a few variables: the value of your house, the value of comparable houses on the island, the condition of the housing market, how soon you sell after making improvements, and the quality of the project itself. The most important thing to consider is not spending more than you can recoup - sure, this seems obvious, but you’ll be amazed how many people decide to throw vast amounts of money into a house that they will find extremely hard to recoup when the time comes to sell. That fancy side extension that takes out half of your usable outside space can actually have the adverse effect in the eyes of your potential purchaser. Here at Sarnia we offer our customers a free service where we will advise on potential resale figures before you make that important decision to renovate.

Mourant Ozannes’ highly skilled and experienced Guernsey property law team is focused on providing expert residential and commercial property advice and a truly personal service. Combining an enviable speed of response with technical expertise, Mourant Ozannes work tirelessly on your behalf and keep you fully informed at every stage of your transaction.

Mark Torode, Partner An Advocate with more than 10 years’ experience at the Guernsey Bar, whose client base was founded on a vast network of contacts but which has grown due to his reputation for dynamism and problem-solving.

If you do decide to go through with the renovation works, keeping a photographic record of all works that were carried out is essential. A surveyor will need to see these and if they are not present they will assume the worst and report this to the bank in the survey. Something as simple as taking photos will greatly assist the surveyor in creating their report for the lending bank. We are seeing an increase in surveyors requesting specialist reports, such as Timber & Damp and Drain surveys, before they will consider recommending lending to the banks. Some key areas to concentrate on within your home are kitchens and bathrooms where you can tell if money has been well spent or not; they’re the most expensive areas of the home in terms of construction. They’re also where people spend a large majority of their time in their homes. ‘Kerb appeal’ is so important when selling your home. Landscaping and good property maintenance determines whether your home feels inviting from the outside, and could be the make or break on a weekend drive-by with the increased number of properties available in the current market. Cleaning the gutters and fixing that wonky drainpipe are simple jobs that will have a large impact on that all important first impression.

SHOWCASE

PROPERTY SHOWCASE

The Urban Farmhouse Words: Caroline Mauger

La Colline is a rare find: a listed farmhouse close to the centre of St Peter Port. Gallery was intrigued to find out more about this unusual Open Market property. If you were looking for a period home in St Peter Port, you’d expect to find a Victorian or Georgian townhouse, but when it was built around 400 years ago, La Colline was a farmhouse. ‘It was once on the outskirts of town, but town grew,’ says Richard Fox of Martel Maides. La Colline occupies a corner plot where St Jacques meets Upper St Jacques, and it feels like a serendipitous find. The house has been extended over the years and, as its story has unfolded, every attempt has been made to preserve its character and style, as you’d expect from a listed property. The current owners have not only converted the roof space into two extra bedrooms and a study, but they have also refurbished throughout, ensuring that only the best materials and craftsmanship have been employed. As you enter through the front porch you find an entrance hall with an original Victorian mosaic tiled floor and remodelled 17th-century wooden panelling. This leads off to the kitchen and study on one side, both examples of how old and new can work together in harmony. Whilst traditionally old farmhouses can be rather dark, everything has been done to keep this one bright and airy: clever detailing, design and paint finishes help to maximise the light. The glossy white units in the kitchen are a case in point, topped with polished granite on the worktops and central island. Two Siemens ovens and a wine fridge happily coexist with an Aga, sitting in an alcove with an exposed wooden beam above. The study is a recent addition, built in a traditional style which echoes the

82

architecture of the original building and has a pitched roof. Bookworms and scholars will love all the built-in bookshelves here. This room overlooks one of the most charming parts of the house: the vinery. This southfacing, L-shaped construction has been completely rebuilt and, with its stoneflagged floor, it’s perfect for dining with an al fresco feel, whatever the weather. There are blinds to stop it getting too hot, as well as mature vines providing shade, beauty …and grapes. Doors lead from the vinery to the dining room. Both this room and the adjoining sitting room have a period feel, but in slightly different ways. The elegant dining room has window seats and a fireplace with a slate-tiled hearth; the sitting room is cosy and rustic, with original beamed ceilings and a big stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove. Once it would have been the fashion to have exposed wooden beams, but painting them white gives a fresher feel. A utility room and double bedroom with a large bathroom next door complete the ground floor. This would make a great guest suite, although there are plenty of options with two further bedroom suites on the first floor. Both of these bedrooms are spacious enough to compete for the title ‘master suite’ and they have Georgian fireplaces, built-in wardrobes and deep windowsills that show how thick these farmhouse walls really are. Whilst one bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, the other pips it at the post by having a walk-in dressing room and an adjoining bathroom with a

PROPERTY

bath and separate shower. The fireplace in this true master suite is particularly beautiful, with highly original, curvy detailing. When the owners converted the roof space they didn’t just add two bedrooms, they also made a quirky second study, accessed by climbing a ladder. If you were involved in top-secret research, this would be the study you’d choose! The pair of bedrooms have dormer windows and share a bathroom with an open shower stall. From the garden you can admire the way La Colline has been lovingly restored: the stonework has been repointed and is bright and clean, and the new catslide dormer windows look like they have always been here. This suntrap of a garden has lots of lovely features: a lawn surrounded by ornamental borders, a kitchen garden and a shed. Double gates also give you extra parking to the rear, should you need it in addition to the area at the front. Richard is confident that La Colline will soon find a buyer who loves its history and originality: ‘It’s a beautifully restored property and a little oasis of the countryside close to the heart of St Peter Port. You expect farmhouses like this to be in St Saviour’s; it’s particularly rare to find one in this location.’ La Colline is being marketed for sale by Martel Maides, visit martelmaides.co.uk for more information.

Finishing touches Rugs, lighting, glassware and throws - these are the finishing touches that truly make a house your home. ‘Well-chosen accessories will help to transform your interior style – it’s all in the detail,’ says Katie Le Tissier, Bonsai’s interior designer. Bonsai’s Home showroom has a brilliant collection of decorative accessories by exciting designers that will fit perfectly with your décor, or give a room an instant update. ‘We love designers who take a functional item and elevate it to become a thing of beauty,’ says Katie. ‘It’s amazing what difference new cushions or a cosy wool throw can make to an old sofa. Lighting can also change the look and atmosphere of a room quite dramatically. It’s especially effective now the afternoons are darker.’ For a typically British style, eclectic or quirky touches make a great talking point – adding something unexpected to a room gives it more character and personal style. ‘Using accessories to experiment is easy and doesn’t have to be expensive,’ assures Katie. ‘Be bold. Playing around with lighting, ornaments and soft furnishings is a brilliant way to introduce more colour to a room or change it seasonally.’ The Bonsai Home showroom has also become the destination for out-of-theordinary gifts with a special area showcasing smaller items like candles, watches, tableware and picture frames. BROCKHURST

hurst’s unique heritage. Richard Hardie, Managing Director of Livingroom and Council Member of NTG, admits that it was a huge project: ‘It’s amazing to essentially be bequeathed a house like this but big houses cost money and this really was a full renovation.’ The interior of the house is simply gorgeous, oozing quality, class and superb craftsmanship. Sara Lampitt and Cathy Rowe have made understated yet bold colour choices, exemplified by the dark sage paintwork on the drawing room fireplace and Georgian panelling. Every detail is spot-on. They have made classic choices that work in a period home but suit contemporary tastes, from beautiful light fittings and metro tiles to bathrooms that have a Victorian feel but avoid pastiche. The kitchen is Shaker-style, handmade locally by Peter Head; painted Swedish Blue, it’s timeless but just that bit different. Every room is light and airy, with lovely high ceilings. Downstairs the floors are solid oak and the entrance hall leads to a huge drawing room with original windows, one of them a bay. There used to be a lean-to conservatory attached which Richard says was ‘like a sauna’ but this has been replaced by an orangery that fits better with the architecture of the house and has a solid roof. Steps lead down from the entrance hall to a basement wine cellar – the exception to the light and airy rule - and at groundfloor level you’ll find the cloakroom, utility room and garage: if it’s pouring with rain you can jump out of your car and walk straight into the house. There are two bedroom suites on the first floor. One has tall windows surrounded by Juliet balconies but the master suite is the pièce de résistance with a bigger ensuite and a dressing room. An ingenious detail is a Guernsey cupboard that has been converted into a special shoe cupboard; it might not satisfy Imelda Marcos but for most of us it would do nicely. There are a further two en-suite bedrooms on the third floor, the views getting better as you ascend. From the fourth floor you can see right out to sea. This level would work as two bedrooms or a complete living area; put a desk in the bay on the landing and you would feel rather like Victor Hugo in his writing room. The little cast-iron fireplace and baby slipper bath in the top-floor bathroom are adorable features. A walled, south-facing garden is the icing on the cake at Brockhurst. The rental cost includes the services of a gardener to ensure it remains looking good. There

A National Trust treasure Words: Caroline Mauger

Brockhurst, arguably one of the finest townhouses on the island, was bequeathed to the National Trust of Guernsey and if you’re an NTG member, you can see for yourself what an astounding job they have made of restoring it to its former glory. There’s something fabulous about a period property that has been expertly restored: you can revel in its history without having to put up with the ill effects of damp, draughts and questionable plumbing. When Brockhurst, a magnificent four-storey Regency house on The Grange, was acquired by the National Trust of Guernsey in 2000 for one golden guinea through the generosity of Mrs Florian Carr, it had all of these problems and more. The expiration of the existing lease in late 2013 gave the Trust the opportunity to evaluate the property’s condition and consider its future. Two years of painstaking planning and restoration work are now complete and the result is incredible. CCD Architects and contractors C.A. Duquemin had to take the house right back to deal with wet rot, dry rot and beetle damage, install new wiring, plumbing and heating and improve thermal insulation and ventilation. All that whilst respecting Brock-

is a swimming pool but a clever idea was to cover it over with decking. Should a tenant choose to have the pool reinstated they can do so at their own expense, but Richard suspects the decking will be a more popular option. The National Trust of Guernsey is rightly proud of this project, and the team will be hosting an Open Day in November. Brockhurst is being offered for rental on the Open Market and will provide the Trust with valuable income once the cost of the renovation has been recouped. ‘We’re very excited for members to see Brockhurst,’ says Richard. ‘The National Trust of Guernsey has a very strong membership and we have some big plans ahead. This project was urgent, essential work and now that it’s complete, we are able to pursue some exciting schemes that had to be put on hold. An appeal to restore our Towers into Landmark Truststyle properties will be launched in 2016 and, in a new direction for the Trust, they will be available for visitors and islanders to book, so watch this space.’ Our island’s heritage buildings are precious – it’s good to know they are in safe hands. Images courtesy of Livingroom, you can view more on their website livingroom.gg. The Open Day for members and friends to view Brockhurst will be on Saturday 14th November. Go to nationaltrust.gg to become a member and for more details.

ISLANDS MUMS

quality of life for families.’ If you’re an entrepreneur you might know Sasha through her work with Startup Guernsey and Beer Code Design, a tech and creative meet-up founded by Sasha and now known as the Lightbulb Community. Earlier this year the opportunity to purchase Guernseymums.gg arose, and Sasha had the vision to take it to the next level. ‘The decision had already been made to rebrand to Islandmums.com and what attracted me was that here was a strong brand that was loved by local families and mums especially,’ explains Sasha. ‘I saw the potential to make the business more tech-savvy and take it to the next level.’ Islandmums.com is an online business which operates through its website, social media and a digital newsletter. This year the site has been completely relaunched, the business rebranded and an array of features added to make it the go-to platform for local families. Sasha speaks of new payment solutions and platforms – but at the heart of the company is a desire to help improve life for families in a number of ways:

THE INTERVIEW

Family Friendly Words: Caroline Mauger

Islandmums.com is dedicated to making life better for families in Guernsey. Gallery caught up with its Chief Mummy Officer Sasha Kazantseva. Sasha Kazantseva understands how becoming a parent changes everything: one minute she was considering a tech start up in Silicon Valley and the next she was relocating to Guernsey, getting married and celebrating the arrival of twin daughters. Having previously worked for Google in Moscow, L’Oréal in London and technology companies in Singapore, Bangkok and Ulan Bator, our small island must have been something of a culture shock. ‘If I’m honest I felt like my life would end!’ admits Sasha. ‘But once I started meeting like-minded people I fell in love with Guernsey and its wonderful

106

The Family Card The popular annual Family Card allows cardholders to take advantage of a multitude of offers, giving good discounts with local family-friendly enterprises, including shops, cafes, beauty and fitness services and classes. ‘When I started we had about 20 offers and we now have over a hundred,’ says Sasha. New this summer was a partnership with Sark Tourism and Sark Shipping to make visiting this gem of an island more affordable for families. The Family Card 2016 is now available for pre-order on the website and at £25 it really does pay for itself in no time. Supporting Local Business Sasha has made it easier for businesses to come on board with offers; by not charging them for advertising their offers, she wants Islandmums.com to be an ideal platform for them to reach families. Sasha feels strongly about keeping it local: ‘Guernsey is struggling with intense online competition and that’s only likely to get worse, so we’re helping to keep money on the island and helping to promote smaller businesses that maybe don’t have the skills or the revenue to reach new customers and properly do marketing and sales as well as PR.’ Supporting Parents You know Sasha isn’t just paying lip ser-

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

vice to her desire to help small businesses when you hear that Islandmums.com are launching courses for parents to start their own enterprises. ‘Small Business Essentials in partnership with Startup Guernsey will look into the fundamentals of starting on your own, whether it’s a business, you’re freelancing, it’s a sole trader operation or you want to do something part-time as a kind of hobby alongside another job.’ The first workshop will take place on 18th November as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. According to Sasha, encouraging women in particular is essential: ‘As an ageing island, we are potentially facing a demographic timebomb,’ she says. ‘We’re going to have a small working population compared to the older generation and we’re missing out on getting more women involved in our economy, which is really shooting ourselves in the foot. When they have children, a lot of women drop out of the corporate system which is a great shame because it has an effect on their confidence and longer term earning - and tax-paying - potential. Keeping a foot in the system means you still know what’s going on, you’re still meeting people, networking and building your skills, even if perhaps you’re just volunteering for a cause or doing something part time. ‘Starting your own business has never been easier or cheaper, and I really think that’s one of the ways for women to make family and work life more flexible. Running your own business is not for everyone but I think at heart we’re all entrepreneurs to some extent. ‘We also absolutely must sort out our maternity and paternity legislation and figure out how to fund it sustainably – Guernsey is one of the few countries in the world which does not have one, well behind many African countries. Such legislation is a long-term investment into Guernsey’s future.’

They work on a variety of clients from global brands to small boutique companies across the UK, the middle East and Asia. 01481 727699 | thepottingsheddesign.com

Islandmums.com has partnered with two charities. ‘One is Edible Guernsey and we launched the Summer Growing Club for children under 10 which was so popular we’re looking to extend it next year. We don’t want to lose our agricultural heritage and Edible Guernsey has some fantastic new ideas of how we can, as an island community, have a sustainable way of cultivating our own produce.’ The company also has a partnership with Home Start Guernsey. As Sasha explains, ‘The charity focuses on supporting families, especially those who are going through problems or finding it hard to acclimatise to being a parent.’

‘ IP Freely... or When an Image is Right’ Words Jay Aylmer

At The Potting Shed Design we deal with ‘image’ all the time and have created image brands for hundreds of companies - but not often do we encounter any requirements to take the brands to the level of registering their Intellectual Property and/or Image Rights. It is not our area of expertise (we simply paint the pretty pictures) and it’s not something we would ever advise upon. We are fully aware that the island is forging the way as a place of world class IP and Image Rights, delivered and grown by people such as David Evans and Jason Romer of Collas Crill IP. Recently, we were involved with a project in which we were looking to market a service to the Middle East, and as we had a stake in the project the old grey matter started looking into the advantages, requirements and solidity of registering your IP and Images Rights in Guernsey. Our

BUSINESS

project aside, what I discovered was the number and levels of global companies that have registered in Guernsey… the list was truly astounding! It’s not secret information, but it’s not exactly bedtime reading, trawling through the registry for who has registered what, but I was truly excited to find the following companies registered in one way or another in Guernsey: • apple iphone • gap • starbucks • the fa • banana republic • kellogg’s • coca-cola • nikon • exxon mobil • intel • arsenal • heineken • red bull • levi strauss • timberland • m&s • ferrari It just goes to show what an incredible job this small island has already done in relation to Intellectual Property and Image Rights which not only fills me with a great deal of confidence in marketing and registering our product in Guernsey, but also in the fact that it will be taken seriously when trading it into places like the Middle East. Long may it continue.

If you want to know what’s going on or have a parenting question, go to Islandmums.com. A calendar and regular what’s on guides keep you informed and the team is building up a bank of information on topics such as the education system, nurseries and childminders and what to do if you are pregnant.

It’s clear that Islandmums.com, with its network of freelancers and part-time employees, practises what it preaches. ‘We’d like to be a voice for mothers and really advocate their rights in Guernsey,’ says Sasha. As rewarding as parenthood is, it has its challenges – it’s good to know someone’s got your back.

Local creative agency Dorfmeister Studios has produced one of the world’s first 360-degree-view music videos. The four-minute showcase of ‘Summertime in Guernsey’ is sound-tracked by popular local group Buffalo Huddleston’s song Sky High. The film incorporates a range of local landscapes and pastimes, interspersed with footage of the band performing live at the Terrace Garden Cafe. Viewers are able to change the direction they are looking through every angle, enabling a highly interactive experience of which no two viewings will be the same. Launched a week ahead of Facebook’s recent announcement of including 360 videos in its newsfeed, the local film positions Dorfmeister Studios as a leader in

this cutting-edge new medium. It is just one of the agency’s services, which range from traditional video production to all aspects of computer-generated imagery and virtual reality. The company, which launched last year, is the brainchild of Karl Dorfner, a creative who has been working on developing CGI for the past 14 years. He is already highly renowned locally for the quality of his work in architectural and product visualisation - both in still images and three-dimensional animations. ‘The Sky High video has served as a showcase of what we can now do and we are really happy with how it turned out. ‘Beyond entertainment, 360 video and VR have many applications, such as

educational resources and all types of marketing from tourism to retail.’ A current project he is working on is a virtual reality reconstruction of the bombing of the White Rock in 1940, featuring commentary from eye-witness Molly Bihet. ‘With VR you can experience historic events, which is a very exciting educational proposition. I hope to have the complete experience with the headset available at the library and for it to be viewable in all schools on tablet devices.’ Karl set up his own business K3D in 2003, which evolved into Dorfmeister Studios last year to reflect his expanding services. This summer he moved into a new town centre premises in Berthelot Street. Commenting on how the Sky High

video came about, he said: ‘I’d invested in all the technology and wanted to put together a 360 video showcase of island life, with lots of different landscapes and lifestyle stuff in a documentary style.’ He worked on the video in partnership with long-time friend and experienced photojournalist Torr Priaulx. Karl and Torr decided on a number of scenes they wanted to capture, including sailing, socialising on the beach, cycling and rock jumping. Filming took place between July and September. The 360 technique involves capturing video footage in every direction from a central point. This is done with six GoPro video cameras mounted at different angles on a stand, collectively filming a full spherical field.

CASE STUDY

CASE STUDY

Frith Sykes ‘Made in Guernsey’ is the central theme of this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week in Guernsey. To mark the occasion Startup Guernsey have hand selected a selection of local entrepreneurs to profile on their website. The Startup team allowed Gallery the exclusive scoop on new business Frith Sykes, a partnership between sports performance consultant Jeremy Frith and educational psychologist Rachel Sykes... Tell us about your business Based on our different backgrounds and strengths, Frith Sykes delivers workshops and training based on people achieving their personal best, whether in sport, education, business or their personal lives. We both work part time with the Guernsey Sports Commission and the States of Guernsey Education Department. We first worked together in the summer of 2011 under the GSC umbrella, linking sport, education and performance and presenting to parents, athletes and coaches. This then extended to the corporate sector and to teachers in the public sector. Our work is based on psychology research by Carol Dweck and ‘growth mindset’ (rather than ‘fixed mindset’) in particular. In 2013 the Education Department approved our request to work in schools and this extended to some paid consultancy work in Guernsey’s private schools. Having developed some of our own resources and research, we recognised that there were business opportunities outside our work as employees and we registered a company, partly to protect some of our intellectual property. We created a website and opened a bank account, drawing on help from a friend with the company administration. Using some of Jeremy’s cricket connections we worked in Holland with national cricket age squads and soon afterwards we were given the opportunity to talk at a TEDx event. We made contact with others working in our field and this created opportunities to present abroad, including Scotland, Ireland, Europe and the United States. We are committed to taking a community approach to our work and some of it has been free of charge or on an expenses-only basis. The Behavioural Insights Team con-

110

ducted a study with 26 job centres in the UK delivering a ‘growth mindset’ intervention to staff. As a result staff took a more optimistic view of their clients’ capabilities and ability to get back into work. We have since provided training for Guernsey’s Social Security staff with really positive feedback and people asking for more. We are working with five professional football club academies to conduct a research study with Bournemouth University – Notts Forest FC, AFC Bournemouth, Bristol Rovers FC, Portsmouth FC and Reading FC. We work with the coaches on their review process, focusing on the players’ motivation and wellbeing with Bournemouth University measuring the impact. A major coup was when we were on a panel in Scotland with Carol Dweck herself. She has been cited by the BBC as one of the most influential psychologists ever. We worked alongside her for five days and she was referencing our work in some of her talks. What inspired you to take the leap and work for yourself? Our motivation came from the opportunity to share our passion for our work more widely. It’s very rewarding to be involved in positively changing a community. Another reason for formalising our business partnership was to protect the intellectual property that we’ve created. As our existing ‘day jobs’ are part time we also realised that we could devote some time to Frith Sykes. We enjoy working together and pushing each other on to greater achievements. How did Startup Guernsey assist? One of their mentors, Marc Winn, has been hugely helpful by giving us the platform to speak at TEDx and by generally encouraging us to think big. We also benefited from some advice from David Stanley, a lawyer volunteering for Startup Guernsey. What were the biggest obstacles or perceived barriers? We were cautious about how much time Frith Sykes might involve and also about not knowing what we didn’t know about starting a business, so this is where the

Startup Guernsey Co-working Wednesdays were helpful at the start. In particular, we were unsure how much to charge and when we should charge – we were in danger of sometimes being too nice! We’ve had some frustrations when things haven’t turned out as we’d hoped, or we’ve missed opportunities. We’re also learning how to juggle personal commitments, for example finding time to travel for work and also spend time with family. What’s next for your business? We need to sit down together and plan the next steps. Luckily there’s a pub equidistant from both our houses. We are publishing a book and will make use of this to promote our work.

NEWS RAPID EVOLUTION AT PR FORUM (01) Trends shaping the communications landscape globally were explored by a diverse lineup of visiting speakers from digital, international and academic PR practices at the Channel Island PR Forum. The rapidly evolving digital communications environment was a central theme of the Forum and was debated in a panel session. They argued that with technology significantly shortening attention spans online, this presents a ‘golden opportunity’ for PR practitioners to act as ‘content creators and storytellers’ to engage with audiences in creative ways. The event was introduced by Sarah Pinch, President of the CIPR, who emphasised the organisation’s current focus on ethics and gave an update on the work it was doing to address the identified gender pay gap in the industry, which she described as ‘unacceptable’. The CIPR Channel Islands PR Forum 2015, which was sponsored by Orchid and had BL Magazine as its media partner, raised £155 through ticket sales for iProvision, the CIPR’s charitable fund for PR professionals in need. The event also formed part of national Ethics Month.

ANNIVERSARY SUCCESS Ravenscroft’s assets under administration have reached more than £2 billion for the first time. In its interim report the company, which is the only independent stockbroking and investment management company in the Channel Islands, saw assets under administration reach £2.06bn, a 42% increase on its 30th June 2014 figure of £1.45bn. ‘To achieve such a milestone is a great way of celebrating our 10th anniversary,’ said group Chief Executive Officer Jon Ravenscroft.

ELIAN’S COMPREHENSIVE RANGE OF AIFMD SERVICES (02) Elian Fund Services has strengthened its Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) capabilities with authorisation to provide professional depositary services in Luxembourg. Authorisation from the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) enables Elian to be appointed Depositary by managers of AIFs. Elian Director Paul Lawrence said the approval bolstered Elian’s comprehensive range of AIFMD services. Mr Lawrence added: ‘We have received significant interest in our depositary offering in the UK, and look forward to applying our skills and experience to the Luxembourg market. We will also apply for depositary licences in Jersey and Guernsey during 2015 as we consolidate Elian’s depositary capabilities.’

GUERNSEY AT THE FOREFRONT OF FINANCIAL REPORTING (03) The Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers (GACO) October seminar covered the introduction of the Information Gateway Online Reporter (IGOR), an online portal for the purpose of collecting and exchanging Automatic Exchange of Information. The Guernsey Association of Compliance Officers Chairman and Carey Olsen partner Mark Dunster said it is a key objective for the association that Guernsey continues to be an early adopter of the highest reporting standards: ‘Part of that process is ensuring that the business community both understands what is required and is supported in delivering those requirements.’ Guernsey Income Tax office Compliance and International Manager Lee Harris, who is the project manager for IGOR, demonstrated the new system which allows registered organisations in Guernsey to submit and review reports related to their organisation in line with the latest compliance regulations for US FATCA and other inter-governmental agreements.

KEY ROUTE INTO EUROPE FOR AIFS Figures from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) have underlined the strong relationship between Guernsey’s fund industry and the European marketplace. Data reveals that Guernsey was the third largest non-EU fund domicile, behind only the US and Cayman Islands, for the number of non-EU AIFs and non-EU AIFMs marketing into the EU Member States of the UK, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Finland, Denmark and Belgium for the nine-month period up to March 2015. The Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) has previously reported that, in addition to the UK, managers have used Guernsey’s National Private Placement (NPP) regime to market AIFs into other key markets. In response to AIFMD, Guernsey introduced a dual regulatory regime through which it is possible to continue to distribute Guernsey funds into both EU and non-EU countries. Dominic Wheatley, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, said: ‘Guernsey’s response to AIFMD has been first class and has ensured the island is ideally placed to continue to provide access to Europe. The European Securities and Markets Authority’s July recommendation that Guernsey should be granted a ‘third country’ passport under AIFMD was encouraging and we now eagerly wait to see how the European Parliament, Council of the European Union and the European Commission will follow this advice. Extending the passport would ensure that Guernsey is able to operate on a level playing field with its European counterparts in the future.’

more than 11% of total spend, with 42% of household goods now bought online. Paul said: ‘The high street experience is evolving. The Internet allows us to research online and compare products from our own living rooms when we want. I wanted to create an online business that serves a local audience, and keeps the money locally. The trouble is that money is going off island and traditional retailers are closing. People are buying products on the Internet at their convenience, where there is more choice and often better value. Mypad offers a credible online business that operates locally and employs Channel Island people. This is the future of retailing.’

‘Guernsey Chamber of Commerce is delighted that an internationally known economics specialist will be the guest speaker at this year’s Chamber Annual Dinner,’ said Tony Rowbotham, President. ‘Gus’s long involvement in economics and his career at the UK Treasury and head of the Civil Service for six years will undoubtedly provide rigorous and interesting content in his keynote speech. We look forward to welcoming him to Guernsey.’

ONLINE FURNITURE BUSINESS LAUNCHES IN GUERNSEY (05)

With Guernsey shoppers estimated to be spending more than £60million a year online a Channel Island retailer has launched an online furniture store to keep money in our islands. Paul Clark has almost 30 years’ experience in retail. He launched Mypad, an online furniture based business in Jersey, two years ago with the aim of improving on what the local furniture retail landscape provides, and is now bringing the concept to Guernsey. The latest Internet retail sales figures from the UK’s Office for National Statistics show that the value of online sales there more than doubled in the five years to 2014, reaching an annual average weekly spend of nearly £719 million. While figures for Guernsey are not collated, Internet sales in the UK represent

NEW PHONES

REVIEW

Alcatel POP 2 DJ - and Airtel-Vodafone Brand Ambassador - Hannah Jacques reviews the Alcatel POP 2 Meet the Alcatel OneTouch POP 2, the next generation of Alcatel POP phone packed full of smartphone essentials without the price tag. This lightweight but surprisingly robust model comes in a bright and glossy 4.8” case, making it ideal for those who don’t like the almost tablet-sized smartphones of today. Its size, weight and the fact it won’t break the bank make the POP 2 a great first phone for the kids, especially those who become a bit carefree when it comes to parties and holidays. You know the ones.. While some phone manufacturers opt to cram their phones with unnecessary bloatware, the POP C2 – much like its younger sibling – arrives with some genuinely useful additions. It’s great to see the likes of the Amazon Appstore included alongside Google Play, while there’s also music streaming app Deezer and a handy barcode scanner loaded onto the barebones Android installation. Instead of usually uninstalling apps that saturate the phone, I’m surprised to see

iPhone 6S NEW, IMPROVED AND TRULY AWESOME Since it set the smartphone world alight back in 2007, the iPhone has maintained its position as the handset that other manufacturers aspire to beat. Given the strength and depth of competition, this is an incredible record and amazingly, it is one that Apple has been able to extend with the iPhone 6S. If you thought iPhones couldn’t get any better, then you were mistaken. The 6S

some I’d actually use. What this also means for Alcatel’s latest release is that it doesn’t bog down the POP 2 and the performance benefits as a result. Now what really excites me about this phone is its 4G capability. I couldn’t believe it either, a supposed ‘bargain blower’ that offers the fastest mobile data support available. It makes browsing the web a breeze, you can surf social media with ease and watching your favourite YouTube clip has never been so easy. We all know what that buffering sign does to our stress levels. With some help from the team at AirtelVodafone, here are some of the specs – it includes a 4.5” display, android OS, 5 MP camera and a microSD card slot for extra storage capacity. With a healthy battery life that provides over 25 hours of music playback – yes please! – this phone offers all the essentials of a smartphone and takes away all the worries of getting a single scratch on something that comes with a big price tag. This is a phone that’ll serve you well and is certain to surprise you as well. Great news is you can get it for free with Airtel-Vodafone when you switch your number to them on pay-as-you-go and top up £30. Simply visit www.switchandsave.gg

takes the new iOS 9 operating system, adds the faster and smaller A9 and M9 chipsets, strengthens the body with aviation-grade aluminium and improves an already impressive camera to give the market a truly superb phone that will have iPhone aficionados buzzing for months and, most importantly for Apple, will likely attract new customers in their droves. The 6S is available as a standard size or in a ‘Plus’ version with similar dimensions to the iPhone 6 and it comes in four colours, with the gold and rose gold looking particularly stylish. Its 12Mp camera is outstanding and integrates brilliantly with the multimedia functions that have made iPhones so popular. You can take, edit and share images and video more

How to… Download iOS9 without taking up too much space MATT’S TOP TECH TIP FROM AIRTEL-VODAFONE Back up your iPhone to your computer or to iCloud first, just in case something goes wrong with the update. Secondly, you’ll want to download the update over a strong Wi-Fi connection. If your iPhone is running low on storage space, try downloading the app to your computer and updating via iTunes.

Recommended by Paul Chapman Print Studio (iOS, Android) Easy photo printing Printic (iOS, Android) Free worldwide shipping FreePrints (iOS, Android, Windows Phone) Free prints delivered to your door Digital photos are great. You can take a picture and instantly see how it looks. If the lighting’s wrong or granny’s got her eyes shut (again), you can retake the photo as many times as you like to get it right before sharing it on social media. This ability is obviously a vast improvement over the old way of developing your photos: dropping your roll of film off at the lab and not knowing how your pictures were going to turn out until you

got them back hours, or sometimes days, later. But you had something you could touch and put on display, which sadly isn’t possible when your photos never leave the confines of your camera roll. Happily, ‘there’s an app for that’, and here we look at three that put a 21st-century spin on photo development. print studio (iOS, Android) is a beautifully designed and easy-to-use app that makes ordering prints from your phone and Instagram photos a snap (pun intended). A wide variety of print sizes are available, but it doesn’t stop there; you can also order photobooks, framed and ready-to-hang prints, magnets and badges, greeting cards, posters and photobooth-style photostrips, all without leaving the sofa. Additionally, you have the option to buy unusual displays for your pictures, including a reclaimed Santa Cruz barn wood frame. printic (iOS, Android), like Print Studio, allows you to create photobooks, posters, magnets and calendars, as well as 3x4” Polaroid-style prints. A clever and engaging user interface contains basic editing tools and lets you choose photos from

the day-to-day, general looking after sort of stuff, there is another aspect of parenthood that is, to my mind, far more profound, and it is my duty to help my kids develop into the best people that they can be, so that they reach their full potential and become good, honest, tolerant citizens.

Holding the baby INSIDE THE MIND OF A TECHNOLOGY-LOVING, WINE-SWIGGING, STAY-ATHOME DAD. Words Paul Chapman I’m a father to three runny-nosed, loud and excitable children. I love them dearly, as any parent does (love their own kids, not mine. Although mine are very cute. And noisy. Really noisy) and I would, of course, do anything for them. Besides doing all

It’s not an easy task; there are challenges at every turn and I have to make sure I steer my children on the right course, or at least point them in the right direction. I will have to advise, nurture and support them in everything they do, assuming it’s not armed robbery or working for the Daily Mail. None of this is easy to do, mainly because I still feel like an 18 year old and have been winging it since then. I will have to draw on my own experiences to ensure my kids don’t make the same mistakes I have and pass on what I’ve learned so far to help them get off on a good footing. My daughters are currently at pre-school so, at the moment, I don’t feel the need to start bombarding them with nuggets of wisdom. They are in a safe little cocoon at their excellent nursery, and mainly interested in fairies

Yes, you read that correctly. You only have to pay for the cost of postage and packaging. A range of other print sizes is available at a very reasonable price, and you’re not limited to choosing photos from your camera roll; the app can also access Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, Flickr, Google Photos, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. The app itself is free and the service provided represents excellent value. The days of traditional film development may be over for most of us, but these apps, along with many others, make it possible to free our photos from the confines of our phones and turn them into something tangible.

and CBeebies. My son, however, is in year 1 at primary school and seems to have developed the absorbency qualities of a sponge. He’s sucking up everything around him and inevitably, not all of it is ideal (I won’t tell you what I caught him drawing the other day, but it would have made Russell Brand blush). So I’ve started gently advising and guiding, or mentoring him if you will. One of the first important things I have taught him, something that will stay with him forever, is how to flick your pants up in the air with your foot and catch them on your head. Not only has my son learnt a new life skill, it has also provided opportunities for more father/son bonding. In a practice pant-flicking session the other day I managed to launch my undercrackers into the air and land them on my son’s head. No mean feat, I’m sure you’ll agree. I’ve thought long and hard about the next lesson I can pass on to my boy. I don’t inadvertently want to try and get him running before he can walk, so to speak, I need to pace it gently. So over the Christmas holidays I shall teach him the art of making fart noises with nothing but a cupped hand and an armpit. When he’s grown up, at least he won’t be able to say I didn’t try.
