We love to know our readers hang on to previous copies but when you move or find that they’re taking up too much space, drop them down to the recycling bins in the car park off the Esplanade. n the 1950’s the idea of using turbine engines in cars was gaining traction, with major names such as Rover, Fiat, and Chrysler all producing road legal concept vehicles that created awe and excitement wherever they went. They were considered the supercars of the era, but the 1970’s fuel crisis shifted the focus to smaller fuel-efficient piston engines, with the knowledge being lost and forgotten. Jumping forward in time to 2000, the idea of incorporating helicopter turbine engines into road legal vehicles was radical and extreme. The turbines fitted to the motorbike came from Rolls Royce, who expressed their concern and disapproval of such an outlandish idea. Helicopter turbine engines are built to power Helicopters, not motorbikes.
Over the last 3 years, Zef has created a Guernsey based team of experts to develop the technology and safety aspects to a world class standard, resulting in close relationships with many of the best manufacturers within the automotive world, including (and most importantly) the support of Rolls Royce.
When flying a helicopter at 1000ft, being able to shut the turbine down in the event of a problem is not a luxury pilots have at their disposal. As the turbine bike is land based, the ECU can shut the turbine down in the event of any issues, allowing Zef to simply coast to a halt, check data, tweak various things and ride again safely.
The motorbike now features a one off prototype MOTEC ECU and countless sensors that gather data from around the bike to ensure that key safety parameters of the turbine are kept in line with Rolls Royce specs. In the event of anything going astray, the turbine can be shut down within milliseconds or fuel altered to bring it back in line. The bike even features laser sensors that detect growth and deformation of the tyres north of 200mph (to avoid tyre failure), which have never been used in this way before.
But the culmination of all their hard work was achieved this year when Zef reached a blisteringly fast 224.9mph (over a mile from a standing start), setting the world land-speed record on a turbine powered motorbike. More amazingly, this was achieved with no fairing or aerodynamic aid and upright bars. Pushing their specialist turbine engine to the absolute limit and monitoring performance means that ironically, they have become the perfect PR team for Rolls Royce Helicopter Turbine engines.
With obvious concern about adverse publicity in the event of turbine failure, Rolls Royce had little interest in any conversation, until the testing and success started to materialize. The concept of placing ex-military or out of service turbines in a range of ‘garage built’ vehicles including motorbikes is not novel. Problems arise when it is done by amateurs or companies seeking PR and ‘youtube hits’, rather than focusing on world-class engineering and real world results. After reviewing (in detail) what has been done over the last 50 years in the world of turbine powered road vehicles and meeting those in the USA who had experience with the concept, Zef Eisenberg quickly learnt from personal experience that the engineering quality and standards were lacking – even downright dangerous.

Recently Qualified turbine engineers and proud brand ambassadors, the team (and bike) has been invited to take centre stage on the Rolls Royce stand at the World Heliexpo in Amsterdam this month, with sponsoring by TAG Heuer and regular invitations to Goodwood festival of Speed. Such is the new and original data being created, companies from around the world are approaching the Madmax team for access to their expertise and data, to ensure safer turbine operation, land speed racing and tyre use at speeds far in excess of tyre design. All from a little island that has a speed limit of 35mph! Safety is the name of the game and the Guernsey based team is rewriting the rulebook; exploring previously unchartered territory in their journey into the world of land based turbine technology and propulsion. The Madmax race team is a small, but dedicated bunch and the job requirement for every team member is to be a petrol head with specialist skills. James Larbalestier is Head of engineering; having trained as a toolmaker and CNC operator, is ideally qualified to design and produce the bikes specialist components, such as the one-off gearbox and one piece carbon fibre/Kevlar fuel tank, weighing just 2kg! components to ensure everything is operating 100%, allowing Zef to focus on just piloting the Turbine Bike. Then there’s Dave Inder, the head of electronic engineering, responsible for the bespoke ECU, programming, sensors, maths and aerodynamics, and of course Julie Brown who looks after all the logistics. Zef explains; “Without the competence and complete trust I have in my team, I wouldn’t feel safe or so focused on riding the bike to world record setting speeds.” Much to the surprise of most people, the world record turbine bike is designed and constructed in Guernsey using a multitude of specialist suppliers and the in-house team. Zef explains, “it’s this small niche network of locally based experts that have made the success of the bike so much easier. Had we undertaken this monumental project in the UK we’d be spending the majority of our time sitting on a motorway – it would have taken so much longer. People don’t realise the wealth of experience that we have here in Guernsey.” And there lies another facet to the Madmax story. It’s projects like these and the dedicated people involved that promote Guernsey’s excellence on the world stage. The good folk of Sarnia will never be able to compete with the likes of China in mass production terms, but in the area of prototype and small niche manufacturing, Guernsey can definitely flourish. It’s quite a beautiful place to work from too…
Gallery would like to thank Zef and the team for inviting us into their workspace and showing us some fantastic toys, and yes they can be persuaded to build you your very own road legal Turbine bike for the small sum of £150,000, subject to options! For more information simply visit the www. madmaxworld.com for updates, pictures and videos or ‘MADMAX race team’ on facebook.

MANS WORLD
It’s a man’s world - manly men around the globe WORDS Grant Runyon ILLUSTRATION Pod Hughes
Godfather of Soul James Brown famously sang that “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” and who are we to disagree? I’m certainly not going to argue with a man in a cape who looks like a gargoyle and can scream loud enough to shatter a breezeblock. What JB says goes, whether it’s down to his flagrant disregard for the importance of commas or a rather simplistic understanding of gender politics. The Hardest Working Man in Showbusiness did not deal in subtlety, and James Brown’s world was so manly that he wrote it three times just to make sure you got the message. Our ideas about gender have progressed from those expressed by shouting, sequinned soul singers of the seventies, but that’s not to say that the world has become dramatically less a man’s one overnight. If anything, the uncomplicated machismo of the real man’s man has become even more symbolic as men around the world gradually understand that they don’t really deserve to get paid more for doing the same job as a woman, or that the ability to reach the top shelves and
take out the bin bag shouldn’t confer any special social privileges. Gender inequality is a complicated thing, especially for men who achieve the terrifying realisation that women work harder, live longer and only need our input for a couple of minutes to get on with the baby making business. It keeps me up at night, which is why there’s something reassuring about the cultural presence of completely exaggerated manly men. When I start worrying about having to compete with
#1: AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK MAN
It’s fair to say that Australia is a nation of manly men. Some people say this is a result of accelerated natural selection due to all the poisonous animals, some argue it’s the genetic legacy of British convicts, others will claim that the government adds special hormones to their terrible beer. What most people can agree on is that Aussie man generally doesn’t struggle with complex notions of masculinity - being a man’s man is about watching sports, drinking a lot and cooking meat outdoors. If you can survive a hostile environment and kill dingoes and kangaroos with your bare hands, all the better. Aussie expats often get annoyed with these narrow stereotypes about their nation, but it is an indisputable fact that, if the Queen ever comes off their banknotes, the Australian government has a secret contingency plan to issue currency with pictures of Crocodile Dundee, Alf from Home and Away and Mad Max.
#2: MEDITERRANEAN SEXY MAN
Europe doesn’t have an outback, and the only dangerous animal in the region is Silvio Berlusconi. Therefore, regional images of alpha masculinity are less about mastering a hostile environment than they are about looking good, living well and pursuing the deadliest game of all: woman. This is why when we come to imagine the stereotypical man of the Mediterranean we think of the tanned, moustachioed casanova and the sexual magnetism he generates by sleeping during the day and consuming a seafood, olive oil and tomato-based diet. The countless artists, scientists and philosophers produced by this part of the world might bridle at being thought of as people who only drink vino and arrange ‘bunga bunga’ parties, but speaking as an Englishman I would say that you should stop complaining if women world-wide are happy to assume you are an amazing lover who cooks a mean lasagne.
#3: RUSSIAN RUGGED MAN
For once, the media can hardly be blamed for peddling exaggerated notions of Russian masculinity because so little exaggeration is required when you are talking about a country ruled by a man who hunts bears with his shirt off and does judo with Steven Seagal. Vladimir Putin is on a one-man crusade, both to expand his borders and to ensure that the world sees Russian man as a cross between Ivan Drago and Zangief from StreetFighter 2. It’s true that the whole “human rights and honest government” thing tends to get sidelined in favour of another press shot of the President putting out forest fires with a helicopter, but nonetheless there is a part of me that wishes that David Cameron would appeal to the voters by stripping to his pants and going Rambo in Middlesex.
16
women on equal terms, I just think about Batman or Ray Mears and everything is okay. Whilst Batman is universal, every culture around the world has its own version of the manliest man. A man that we can all look up to, who doesn’t fuss about pain or discomfort, doesn’t talk about his feelings and is better than anybody else at taking the bin bag out. Join me in saluting them, because I fear they might be a dying breed.
#4: SCANDINAVIAN WOODCUTTER MAN
Archaeologists have discovered the surprising fact that up to 50% of buried viking warriors were actually female. This certainly complicates our historical understanding of the swarthy, bearded pillagers of legend, but luckily the aura of manliness in the region is so intense that revelations about lady vikings just seem to confirm the Scandinavian belief that there is no contradiction between being both socially progressive and as hard as a frozen reindeer. Like his Russian cousin, Scandinavian man has been shaped by a challenging environment, although in this case it produces the unusual stereotype of a strapping, bearded lumberjack who can spend months alone in sub-arctic darkness without complaint, but nonetheless emerges at the start of summer to provide for his family by constructing a lovely sauna and some minimalist flatpack furniture.
#5: AMERICAN COWBOY MAN
America is a nation where ideas of manliness are strongly connected to taming the wilderness, with a firearm if necessary. Unlike Russia, this is hard for their leaders to pull off. George W Bush tried very hard to translate his natural lack of sophistication into a Reaganlike cowboy ruggedness, but America has a free media and so most people were well aware that his only connection to the land comes from the amount of it he inherited prior to ever doing a day’s work. American manly men aren’t born into power, but rather hard-bitten individuals who master the landscape and themselves on their own terms. Thanks to the US entertainment industry there’s a great many professionally grizzled male role models to choose from, but I like to ignore Clint Eastwood and Vin Diesel in favour of John Wayne, if only because his real name was Marion.
#6: BRITISH SECRET AGENT SURVIVAL MAN
British men like to imagine that the world sees us as a nation of James Bonds (charming, sophisticated, womanising alcoholics), when the reality is that the more often foreign nations encounter British people on holiday the more they come to regard us simply as alcoholics with as much charm as a busload of football hooligans. Deep down we know this, which is why we keep electing hopeless posh blokes to lead us whilst gradually shifting our cultural icons from smooth-talking sophisticates of the Sean Connery persuasion to witless pint-sinking bantermeisters like Danny Dyer. If there’s a ray of hope for the concept of a uniquely British manhood, it’s Ray Mears, who combines the uncomplicated masculinity of a grumpy PE teacher with the ability to hand-carve camping equipment using a blunt spoon. He may not be the equal of Vladimir Putin wrestling a tiger, but if society ever collapses, British man will be the best equipped to reconstruct it, one garden shed at a time. FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CLUB... LET’S ALL TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB… FOLLOWING THE PATH OF THE WARRIOR IS FRAUGHT WITH OBSTACLES. IT IS A LIFETIME OF TRAINING, CONDITIONING AND PERSONAL SACRIFICE AND A COMMITMENT TO LEARNING THAT IS NEVER-ENDING.
There are many men (and women) in Guernsey who have made such commitments – addicted to perfecting their chosen discipline in a bid to become masters of their art form. There are numerous fighting styles and Martial Arts to choose from in Guernsey. Judo to Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to Muay Thai, Kung-Fu to Karate. As different as each discipline is, they all share the exact same ethos; to strive to become a better person, mentally and physically. Striking with your hands, feet and elbows or learning specialist moves to disable an opponent can seem violent to the uneducated, but in essence, it is about learning to deal with danger without any aggression involved at all. It is taught across all the fighting styles that aggression is the path of the doomed. Bruce Lee was a pivotal figure in showing the Western World the benefits of training in Martial Arts and following a spiritual regime of peace and positivity. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (more commonly referred to as the UFC) is now one of the biggest sports on the planet and although can seem barbaric, takes a monumental amount of training and devotion to become a contender. In the decades that the sport has been around, there has never been a fatality in the Octagon. It is the perfect example of athleticism, hard work and dedication to be the best of the best. The scene is growing in Guernsey too, with some of these athletes embarking on professional careers in their chosen sport. They are the modern day Gladiators and some are the Ronin of their fighting systems. To pass on their knowledge to those willing to learn is a great honour and four of Guernsey’s finest have agreed to talk about their everlasting journey. Taking the ups with the considerable downs and learning to quite literally, roll with the punches; a league of extraordinary gentlemen… Special thanks to the Amalgamated Boxing Club for allowing us the use of their facility.

What is a Dan grade? In most Martial Arts, Dan grades are a sign of expertise in the chosen discipline. With Shotokan and most Karate styles, there is a structured grading system and most clubs hold grading sessions every 4 months – so you can progress through the nine steps to achieve your first ‘Dan grade’ over a period of time. It’s very difficult to pass first time and very unique. The average time taken to achieve a first Dan grade is about four and a half years. After the first Dan you must wait a minimum of two years before attempting second Dan, three years for third Dan and so on.

Years training? Vlade – 45 years Paul – 38 years, 27 in Shotokan Karate
Whats the regime? Get up in the morning for a 4 mile run or gym for an hour. Then shower, work, then up to boxing club for an hour and a half or more training. I live it 24/7.
What’s the regime? The club has established classes 3 nights a week so we’re both kept busy. Training never changes and level of fitness has to be higher than the students because you have to lead by example. The basics of Karate is aerobic with lots of up and down movements with fast punches and kicks – it’s performed fast to simulate real fighting conditions. When we practice blocks we have to imagine it’s the hardest block we ever have to make. When we train together, we train as though it’s actually happening so our reactions are as fast as they can be. Favourite fighter? It’s fair to say we look up to the top instructors (Sensei’s) in Great Britain as our inspiration. We have three chief instructors who visit us on rotation - Andy Sherry, Frank Brennan and Billy Higgins. It’s invaluable as we’ll never stop learning. Most memorable moment? Vlade – When I competed in the European Nationals for Serbia and won my fight. It felt like I was in front of everybody but was about 500 people. Paul – When I was a younger grade I took part in the first Commonwealth Karate Championships, held in Guernsey. I was Captain of the team and we won Bronze. Plans for the future? Vlade – I am training for my 6th Dan and will heading to Japan and the world championships. Paul – I have my 4th Dan coming up in April next year and will head to the Liverpool Red Triangle Club. My last amateur fight in front of 2000 people. That was a big one, and Graham taking me into the corner for my last fight. Plans for the future? To have the British and Commonwealth titles. I have a commonwealth title shot in December, early January. You’ve got to be committed and training takes up a lot of my time. I have 2 little girls; I like to spend that time catching up with them whenever I have a spare moment. Special message? Thanks to my sponsor, Islands Waste for all the support and my family.

38 Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Special move – One of my favourites is an arm bar. It can be expressed from many different positions. From a standing attacking position or from the back or from the side.
Years training? – 22 14 years in this discipline, but Martial Arts has been my life for some time. Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Self defence initially which then expanded through friendship. I realised that I could fight standing up with my kick boxing experience, but had no idea how to protect myself or fight on the ground. The UFC presented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to me and that’s what encouraged me to find the right people in the UK, links from Brazil (his instructors are all from Brazil) and it went from there. What’s the regime? Three hands-on physical sessions a week and a fourth Q&A session where we (myself and the training squad) will talk about theory and movements, specific moves that maybe weren’t grasped throughout the week. I’ll do one or two extra conditioning sessions on top of the usual routine. So as many as six per week. Conditioning is cardio and muscle endurance to maintain strength outside the normal sessions. From pushups to running or anything that keeps the fitness levels up qualifies. Favourite fighter? Traditionally Bruce Lee, as this form came from Kung-Fu originally. As I’ve developed it would be my instructor, the man who gave me my Black Belt; Braulio Estima. Most memorable moment? Being able to meet Mauricio Gomes (a JiuJitsu legend) and his son Roger Gracie, who gave me my Blue belt, my first belt. Those were the most memorable days when life was all about Martial Arts when I used to train every single day. It created that energy and made me want to learn (and keep learning). It developed from being in the presence of Mauricio Gomes. Plans for the future? To grow the sport even bigger in the Channel Islands and educate people in the way of JiuJitsu, and to have somewhere I can have clean mats to put down and have a training facility to call ours. An official Dojo would be nice! Why should people look into following Jiu-Jitsu as a discipline? Martial Arts becomes a way of life and what makes Jiu-Jitsu unique, there is a heritage from the Gracie family and from the UFC. You can see things and recognise lifeskills through it. It educates you through technique but also self-discovery. It’s a very complete psychological Martial Art in how it devotes you to become a better person. Not through fighting or aggression but simply discovering yourself.

Chris Moon is an extraordinary human being. He has been witness to and victim of a series of experiences that professionals claim he shouldn’t have survived. “From that I’ve deduced we should be careful who we listen to,” explains an articulate and energetic Chris. Motivating men and women all over the world is what Chris does.

uring a flying visit to Guernsey last month as the guest speaker for the ICSA Guernsey Annual dinner, Chris sacrificed some of his valuable time in between meeting local athletes and school children to talk to Gallery about his reason for moving forward. Chris readily admits that he is very privileged to have survived a number of events that threatened his life. Powerful words from a man who in the face of adversity, has looked death in the eye numerous times and now dedicates his entire existence to inspiring people, regardless of their status, to lead and conquer their fears. “Sometimes the worst things that happen to people in life can provide the biggest opportunities for us to grow and see the bigger picture,” explains Chris who is keen to pass on his experience to others.

Chris Moon was blown up on 7th March 1995 in Mozambique whilst clearing landmines. Life before that was filled with passionate direction as an army officer then leaving the British Army to work for a charity but continuing to train civilians in safe landmine clearance. A development background in Agriculture, engineering and management brought together all of his skills to clear landmines and it was this skillset that equipped him with the tools he needed to save lives and prevent injury. Accident rates were incredibly low in all of the operations he ran, with road traffic injuries greatly outweighing explosive ordinance disposal accidents at the time. His catastrophe occurred whilst engaged in the least dangerous thing he had ever done. Walking in a safe area that had been previously cleared. One landmine that was impossible to detect (for all sorts of complex technical reasons he explains) had remained on the site and Chris took the full brunt of the explosion. “They just couldn’t find it. I always said that
if my blokes ever missed a mine then I’d want to be the first to know about it – it’s not exactly what I meant,” says Chris. After he suffered immense damage to his body he focussed on every reason that he had to live – to find more opportunities to be happier. An example of this infectious selflessness is how Chris explains his accident; calmly stating “I knew I couldn’t die because it would grossly affect the funding for my programme.” Point of principle, he returned to Mozambique a year later and completed a marathon, running exactly 13.1 miles out to a location with a friend as support and back again.. A metaphorical nod and wink to the horrific circumstances that conspired to end his life a mere 12 months previous. Less than a year after leaving hospital he completed his first marathon to raise awareness for landmine casualties in Cambodia, with only 3 weeks of distance training. The disastrous injuries that weakened his body strengthened his soul to immeasurable lengths and ironically, granted

We asked Chris if there is something thing he wanted to convey to Gallery readers, what would it be?
Chris believes that the whole of our existence is about being positive and not getting dragged down by the negativity of life that we sometimes experience. He explains this perfectly as we talk, explaining, “We have the ability to control not what happens to us but how we allow it to affect us. We have more choices than we realise. The biggest limits in life are not what affect us externally but what develop naturally, internally in our heads.” Updating his therapist qualifications to do more work one to one is the next step for Chris. He understands so much more now on how people can make the best of terrible circumstances, driven to provide advice as a consultant/tutor and as a public speaker. “There is a common misconception that people have about when I was blown up - that it was the worst possible thing that could have happened to me. It couldn’t have been further from the truth,” he explains. Having never allowed himself to have a ‘down’ moment about it, Chris has faced the limitations, but also the gargantuan amount of opportunity that has opened up because

of the fateful day in March 1995. This is a process he is eager to pass on to people; “When I wake up in the morning I remind myself – life is what it is and we have to accept reality for what it is. And then take a positive perspective and then make the best of it. Focus on what we have not what we’ve lost. Focus on what we can do.” When he was the first amputee to become a long distance runner he was alone – having already left the military, so had to undertake his own rehabilitation and teach himself how to heal. Having this experience taught Chris that it is a process of physical and
3. Enjoy life and the journey and spread some sunshine. Chris believes that a lot of people that embark on motivational speaking careers seem to be selling a concept of blind positivity. ISLAND FACTS: MAN ISSUE SPECIAL
10 WORDS STARTING WITH THE LETTERS XY
It’s true everyday is a school day, although we’re not promising that this information will be worth retaining for much longer than it takes you to read through the top 10 words starting with XY, but here they are nonetheless.
32
Xylan n. - A gummy substance of the pentosan class, present in woody tissue, and yielding xylose on hydrolysis; wood gum.
Xylose n. - An unfermentable sugar of the pentose class, C5H10O5, formed by the hydrolysis of xylan; wood sugar.
Xylem n. - That portion of a fibrovascular bundle which has developed, or will develop, into wood cells; -- distinguished from phloem. Xylograph n. - An engraving on wood, or the impression from such an engraving; a print by xylography. Xyloid a. - Resembling wood; having the nature of wood. Xylograph n. - An engraving on wood, or the impression from such an engraving; a print by xylography.
Xylotomy n. - Art of preparing sections (transverse, tangential, or radial) of wood, esp. by means of a microtome, for microscopic examination. Xylophone n. - An instrument consisting of a series of strips of wood or glass graduated in length to the musical scale, resting on belts of straw, and struck with two small hammers. Xyster n. - An instrument for scraping bones. Xystus n. - A long and open portico, for athletic exercises, as wrestling, running, etc., for use in winter or in stormy weather.
Being as this is our XY issue and given the unique nature of the island this seemed like the perfect opportunity to provide you with some interesting facts about the Isle of MAN(N)... The Isle of Mann exists. OK, most of us are well aware of the Isle of Mann, but did you know the island is smaller than Singapore and slightly larger than Guam with a population of about 80,000 people. It is also referred to simply as Mann with 2 n’s. They have their very own Gallery magazine. But it’s worth noting that they are unlikely to hand out a birthday party invite to our friend Micheal the dwarf, we suggested they did after he hosted our party last year, but they’re a bit touchy about dwarves up there. Like our fair island the Isle of Mann is a Crown dependancy and therefore is NOT part of the United Kingdom. The original language on Mann was called Manx. Manx is a Gaelic language similar to some types of Irish Gaelic. The last native speaker of Manx, Ned Maddrell, died in 1974. The symbol on the Isle of Man flag is the triskelion. While it looks like something someone with a bunch of spare doll parts might have put together, the triskelion is actually an ancient symbol. On Mann it is known as the Three Legs of Mann or Tree Cassyn Vannin in Manx. Manx cats have no tail. The Manx cat is a breed of cat which comes from the Isle of Man which is known for being tailless. The breed also exhibits very large hind legs and a rounded head. It feels like this is in some way symbolic Mann is the motorcycle racing capital of the world. The week-long Taste Guernsey food festival took place recently and on 5th September the event took a Love Food Hate Waste twist as chefs demonstrated to members of the public how to turn humble left-overs into gourmet delights. Love Food Hate Waste teamed up with the Taste Guernsey chefs who showed islanders how easy it can be to use up leftovers that might otherwise be thrown away.
The chefs had a range of store cupboard items as well as typical left-overs and during a live demonstration in Market Square, taught onlookers how to turn the ingredients into a tasty, wholesome meal. It is estimated that on average local households could save as much as £600 a year simply by cutting down on the amount of food they throw away.
EY hosted their annual Alumni event at Hojo on Thursday, 18 September. Their alumni community is made up of people who have worked for the firm in the past and provides an opportunity for their current and former employees to reminisce and catch up. The
guests were treated to Mojitos on arrival and an array of canapés were on circulated throughout the evening, which proved very popular at what was a thoroughly enjoyably event for all.

Clients and staff from Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management in Guernsey enjoyed a night at the movies with a high definition screening of “How to Train Your Dragon” in the walled garden at Sausmarez Manor in August. Despite the weather staff and clients donned their waterproofs and brought along
their picnic blankets and deck chairs to watch the film with their families. To complete the movie experience guests were provided with refreshments including a BBQ, ice cream, candy floss and of course, popcorn.
Building on its tradition of bringing together some of the world’s most talented photographers, the fourth Guernsey Photography Festival kicked off with a VIP opening evening at St James. Guests were invited to discuss the material on show and build the excitement about the impending cascade of stunning imagery about to land
on our shores. It returns with a month packed of mind blowing exhibitions, screen projections, live music performances and fantastic education & community projects. A visual feast and mind-stimulating experience to enjoy in the beautiful surroundings of Guernsey.

From jobs in Manly to a manly job...
JACKAROO IN TRAINING Words : Adam Kennedy
Doing a shot of beer and horse crap.
W
rapping elastic bands around calves’ testicles was hardly the Aussie dream I had in mind when I set off for Sydney back in September 2012, but two months later, that’s exactly what I was doing…
After a couple of months looking for work in Australia’s harbour city, I was faced with the prospect of working behind a bar in Manly alongside countless other disillusioned backpackers. Despairing at this thought, I stumbled across “Travellers At Work” (www.taw.com.au) - a website dedicated to helping backpackers and expats sort all of their admin, finances and ultimately, find work in Australia. The part of the site that caught my eye was the offer of a GUARANTEED JOB upon completion of a “jackaroo” course. I was sold at the idea of a guaranteed job; I had no idea what a jackaroo was but the more I researched it, the more it fascinated me. For the uneducated (like myself) a jackaroo (or a “jillaroo”) is Australia’s equivalent of a cowboy or ranch hand. The jackaroo works long, physical days in the unforgiving outback heat, usually in pretty poor conditions for a less-than-pleasant boss and at lower than average pay.

Why would anybody sign up for such a thing? Well, it’s about as authentic an Aussie experience as you could hope for: hoards of backpackers jump on the bus to do the Aussie Experience, clinging to the coastline to head through Surfer’s Paradise, Byron Bay and smoke weed in Nimbin all the while missing out on the Australian interior – the birthplace of most of the Aussie stereotypes us Poms love to parody. Whilst the backpackers jostle for position to dance on tables in the infamous Cairns nightspot “The Woolshed”, jackaroos are busting a gut in real woolsheds in the middle of nowhere. The course began with a half-day drive from a hostel in the Sydney CBD to a town called “Coonabarabran” where a mixed bunch of ragtag travellers and I were met by a chap named Craig Pickett, owner of the “Outbackpackers” ranch; my home for the next week and the last outpost before being shipped off much deeper into the outback proper for our guaranteed jobs. From the very first second, it was clear what we were all in for. Craig was heavily under the influence of XXXX Gold, with a warm can of it still hanging loosely from one hand. His other hand strayed lecherously close to a female trainee’s backside as he belched his way through an expletiveheavy introduction to the ranch and what
we might expect from our week there. He was soon barking orders, pointing us to our redback-riddled sleeping cabins and advising us of our new (derogatory) nicknames for the week as well as the camp’s only two rules: Under no circumstances should you ever say the word “mine”. A penalty of twenty on the spot press-ups was incurred for any breach of this rule, regardless of where you may be/what you might be doing. Expect the unexpected. That night we gathered around the camp fire for the next day’s instructions and were told how we’d passed the first test. Craig had not been intoxicated earlier and although obnoxious, was not the stereotype he made out to be. He was preparing us for the type of straight-talking, “no B.S.” so typical of employers in this part of the country. Somewhat relieved and a lot more relaxed, we all made to go to bed when Craig requested three volunteers to meet a farmer to do some chores for early the next day. The farmer was a partially deaf alcoholic with a very short temper and a strong dislike of Germans. In an act of bravado, and eager to secure a job at the end of the course, two German lads put their right hands straight up in the air (Craig made sure to make a tasteless joke about that) and

were joined by a Glaswegian lad with an almost indecipherable accent. They were to get up at 2.00am and meet the farmer at our ranch entrance. We’d just finished breakfast the next morning at about 5.45am when three blearyeyed jackaroo wannabes traipsed through the door after spending almost four hours in the dark and cold. Craig was impressed: that’s the longest anybody had ever waited for his non-existent, hotheaded friend. Third and final rule for the camp, no heroes. Lesson learnt. Apart from the occasional enforced drinking/knife-throwing games (when one of the Germans ended up pinned to the floor with a knife through his foot we spent the week working a minimum of 12 hours a day in the scorching outback heat. Fixing fences, reversing 4x4s (trailer ‘n’ all) around muddy slalom courses, de-barking logs, learning how to tie all sorts of hitches, basic tractor maintenance, shearing sheep, mustering up cows on horseback, herding sheep on quads or rounding up horses by dirtbike…we did it all. We were constantly learning new skills. Lest we forget, castrating the bull calves…
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Just thinking back to that sweltering afternoon in the bullpen makes my eyes water, but as an integral skill for any jackaroo worth his salt, training in this area was a must. In teams of three, we set about castrating scores of bulls by wrestling them to the ground and pinning them there to be “banded” and given vaccines. Banding
At the end of the long, hard week, we were each called into Craig’s office for a summary of how he thought we did and whether or not he would find us a job. One of the girls came out crying after a thorough dressingdown and the Scottish guy wasn’t far off it after his de-brief either. When my turn came, I was astonished to be told, “AK, I

In time, the circulation would be cut off and gravity would claim two little bovine prizes. We each had a go at the business end of the three-man job, but after one lad’s nose exploded from a kick to the face from an anxious wee calf, I was soon nominated “calf wrestler” – not just for my team, but every team. I took down over thirty calves and Craig took pleasure in sending bigger and bigger ones my way to gauge my breaking point.
think you were born for this.” As a result, Craig had found me a ranch hand job in the outback and I was good to go. I had to do a shot of beer and horse crap to celebrate. Sadly, Craig’s ranch (and indeed, his company) was ravaged by bushfires not long after this, and the job offer fell through as a consequence. I can’t say I’ve gone on to use the skill of calf banding in my everyday life since then, but the short but hard time I worked there gave me a unique insight into the testosterone-filled world of the jackaroo. It’s a job that takes balls.

ASDASDF
The stag do: done right it is the mother and father of all knees-up, but unfortunately you only get one chance to get it right. We know that organising the celebration to mark the end of your friends bachelorhood can be a stressful time, so we’ve put together this guide to help you negotiate the possible pitfalls. After all no one wants to be responsible for letting down the groom on his last weekend of freedom.
STAG DO CHECKLIST DESTINATION
Obviously the priority for most stags will be leaving the island, the age old mantra of ‘what goes on tour, stays on tour’ loses its edge a little if you’re popping across to Gorey for a nice lunch and a few beers at the Dolphin, although this option does provide the perfect second stag, for the b-list mates that didn’t make the off island cut. Therefore we’d recommend you consider first whether or not your going big and opting for a transatlantic flight, or playing it slightly safer and taking advantage of the islands ever improving transport links in to the UK and Europe. Which ever option you choose, don’t forget your passport, if nothing else it’ll provide solid proof of your identification, just in case...
WHO DO YOU INVITE
This is another tricky one. The rules on stags are slightly different to hen parties, mainly because most men will jump at the chance of a weekend away getting ‘on it’ with their friends, and not be worried they’ve not actually been invited to the wedding. It’s simple, just stick to this one golden rule: If they will make the stag do better, or if them not being there will make the stag feel bad, they’re in. Otherwise, send ‘em a postcard.
FANCY DRESS OR NO FANCY DRESS?
Fancy dress might sound expensive, ridiculous and slightly humiliating, but that’s the whole beauty of it, surely? It’s an essential part of making sure your night is memorable, since garish costumes will stick in your memory even when you’ve had 16 drinks and tearfully chucked up in the corner of a club somewhere, they’ll also make it easier to identify your lesser spotted fellow stags. If not everyone wants to get involved then be sure to find the stag a suitable outfit and dress him up, something that’s going to both humiliate him and make him look as repulsive to the opposite sex as possible, is usually a good place to start.

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT...?
Zorb Football
As crazy as its name suggests, this is as unique as it is hilarious. Five a side, cup games, league games, indoor, park, beach and street, the beautiful game like never before. Strap yourselves into your own one man body zorb and split off into teams. Rather than tackle, use the more effective barge to win the ball off your opponents, sending them flying end over end in the process. When in control of the ball, if you can stop yourself howling with laughter for long enough, dribble it forward before smashing it home past the goalie, but beware, a barge could come from any direction!
Pros: It’s likely to be an unforgettable 60 minutes of fun guaranteed to have the you belly laughing long after the final whistle blows. Cons: We’re not sure there are any, even if you don’t love football it looks like epic fun.
Stuntman Training
Most Stag Dos generally involve somebody falling over, into or off something, but at a stuntman training course, trained staff will teach you and your mates how to do it with destructive style. Involving physical and mechanical activities, the British Action Academy www.britishactionacademy.com) teach courses with the best in the business at Pinewood Studios, where they shot the majority of the Bond movies and was most recently, Morgan Freeman’s testing ground for the Batmobile in The Dark Knight.
Pros: Unique and reasonably dangerous, yet in safe hands. Cons: Certainly no pre-match drinking. Cost: Upwards of £100 depending on the activity.
Horror Camp Live
Horror Camp LIVE! (www.horrorcamplive.co.uk) is an overnight immersive experience, based in the fictional Campground Mass Acre in Lancashire. During your 13 hour stay you’ll become part of an interactive living horror game, you’ll be challenged to undertake a series of dare games, during which you’ll be split up from the rest of the group. Every campers experience will be different, but all will include content which is intended to shock, scare and entertain. The campsite is available exclusively to groups of 30 or more. But they cannot admit campers under the age of 18.

Pros: Great if you’re looking for an alternative to traditional camping holidays and you’re a massive horror movie fan. Cons: Not for the feint hearted. Cost: £89.99 per camper GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

t was a warm June evening in 2010 when Janet and Trevor Wakefield were walking through London and stumbled across the Elephant parade. Hundreds of brightly painted elephants scattered around the capital to raise money and awareness for UK conservation charity Elephant Family. It wasn’t until later on, however, that the spectacle sparked an idea in Janet’s head that lead to one of Guernsey’s most popular and successful public art displays; The Donkey Parade.
44
Organised for Janet and Trevor’s charity, The Guernsey Adult Literacy Project (GALP), the parade was hugely popular with islanders and visitors alike and a year later came the second parade – this time the Guernsey cow. GALP, a charitable trust, was established in 2006 to help tackle the problem of adult literacy on the island, providing adults with the opportunity to develop and improve their literacy skills. In the UK there have been several research projects and reports that have highlighted the issues of poor literacy skills in the adult working population. Although similar research has not been carried out in Guernsey, concerns around poor basic skills have been recognised
as an important issue by various States departments and employers. GALP works in partnership with other organisations including the Social Security Department, the Prison and the Probation Service. The charity also works with employers, providing literacy training in the workplace. GALP does not charge fees to those clients who are not in a position to pay. Consequently, the charity welcomes donations and sponsorships as well as arranging various fund-raising activities. With this is mind, GALP are attempting something a little bit different for their next project! Many people commented on the popularity of the animal parades, especially the

donkeys, of which the island is especially proud. These comments encouraged GALP to think about creating a permanent donkey statue, which can be enjoyed by the entire community for many years to come. Local artist Mark Cook has created a statue depicting a life-size donkey with her foal lying at her feet. Mark created the full size model in the traditional way using clay on an armature made of wood and metal. This clay model is currently in a UK foundry where it will be cast in bronze. Mark used a local donkey, named Matilda, as his ‘model’ for the statue, so it can confidently be said that the statue depicts a genuine Guernsey Donkey! After planning permission has been granted, the plan is for the statue to be located in a central St Peter Port location for all to enjoy.
Mark used a local donkey, named Matilda, as his ‘model’ for the statue, so it can confidently be said that the statue depicts a genuine Guernsey Donkey!
As well as the Donkey and Foal statue GALP are organising the ‘Donkey Trail’. Local artists will be asked to create drawings of Guernsey scenes including one or more donkeys. The drawings will be etched on brass plaques, which will be positioned all around the island and, unlike the Parades, will be permanent fixtures. GALP will produce a map, similar to the ones created for the Donkey and Cow Parades, so that visitors and locals will be able to travel round to find the plaques and take brass rubbings of the drawings. An opportunity to discover new areas of the island and a fun activity for all the family. The plan is to have the statue and plaques installed for next spring so that everyone can spend next summer taking the rubbings. If you would like to create one of the drawings, or would like to find out more about how GALP can help you, please get in touch with Trevor or Janet on 07781 102568 or by emailing trevorgalp@ suremail.gg – they would love to hear from you.

Sitting pretty. Little ones grow up so fast and those early days with a new infant are precious, which is why photographer Dani Stevens specialises in capturing these cherished moments for new parents. While Dani photographs all ages, she is the only specialist in bump to baby photography in Guernsey and has been capturing newborns as young as five days since 2008. Her goal is to create customised and creative portraits of children that capture those amazing little details - the tiny toes and toothless grins - that are so fleeting. Having undergone specialist photography training with internationally acclaimed photographers in newborn, maternity and portrait techniques from Australia, Canada and the US here and in the UK, Dani is experienced in putting parents and their infants at ease to produce magical results. ‘True expressions and smiles are only truly visible when we take the time and care to develop a relationship with the baby and their family,’ said Dani, who is in the process of extending and refurbishing her beautiful Bordeaux Studio. ‘I make every effort to have a relaxed and fun atmosphere in my studio and the results will be something to treasure.’
In addition to newborn photography, Dani offers maternity photography, which is best done one month before the due date, or two months for twins. Dani’s aim is to help soon-to-be mums look and feel confident and beautiful, and to celebrate this incredible moment in a their lives. Dani also offers indoor and outdoor family portraits with siblings, as well as birthday cake smash sessions, the perfect way to capture that first or second milestone. This Christmas, Dani will be offering minisessions, which are ideal for truly special Christmas gifts. However, due to demand, it’s best to get booked in early, for sessions taking place at the end of October or early November. ‘Having photographs of your little one’s tiny features while they are brand new is so important and so special. Ask any parent and they will tell you that those first few weeks go by so quickly, as your child grows and takes on new characteristics,’ says Dani. To see Dani’s work visit Dani Stevens Photography on Facebook or visit danistevensphotography.com. To book your photo session call 07781 446630 or email contact@danistevensphotography.com
Newborn photography, Dani said, is 30% technical skills and 70% posing techniques and soothing the baby. The studio is heated to exactly 24/25 degrees Celsius, as when babies are naked they can’t effectively regulate their body temperature - for maximum comfort. Dani only books one client a day to ensure the best possible service. Safety is also paramount. ‘The safety and comfort of your baby is extremely important to me. I have had much training and I am experienced with babies and want you to feel your little treasures can be trusted in my arms.’

THE WINDS OF CHANGE
Words | Marc Winn
For me, Burning Man is the best place to live on earth for one week. Humanity’s grand challenge is to replicate the ‘extraordinary ordinary’ in Guernsey, all of the time.
BURNING MAN THE EXTRAORDINARY IN THE ORDINARY
L
ast month, around 65,000 people met in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for Burning Man, which, to me, is one of the greatest events on earth. I was lucky enough to be there with a group of 15 people from all over the world.
I am not going to try to explain what Burning Man is, since explanations have been attempted so many times before, without success. Not even those who attend can describe this festival, so those who have not been can hardly be expected to understand it. All I can say is that you should go at least once in your life if you want to truly understand human potential. To see it as just a hedonistic arts festival fundamentally underestimates its impact on the world. For me, it is a societal outlier that challenges the very notion of what is possible for humanity. It is an event that any person and any community can learn from, in profound ways. It is ironic that the festival has the same population as Guernsey. It is also roughly the same size. And yet the output of these two societies is staggeringly different. What it teaches me is that if you throw away the rulebook and boil life down to a simple set of principles, you get surprising results.
The 10 principles at Burning Man are: radical inclusion gifting decommodification radical self-reliance radical self-expression communal effort civic responsibility leaving no trace participation immediacy. These carefully crafted principles form the basis of an experimental society, and have an incredibly positive impact on human behaviour. The most breath-taking thing of all is the resultant power of the extraordinary in the ordinary. The principles of Burning Man show what it means when no person lets a piece of litter fly past. It shows what it means when people give, with nothing expected in return. It shows what it means when every handshake becomes a hug. To be immersed for one week in a simple new reality is a life-changing experience. Our human race is capable of creating an extraordinarily different way of operating than it has now. It is in new ways of engagement, and in the accumulation of small interactions, that the reinvention of humanity lies. What fills me with hope and warmth is that it can happen to any of us, at any time. Burning Man never ceases to inspire me to believe that we are all capable of so much more - with just the small things in life.
46
Creating a world that brings out the best through the minutiae of life is the path to a greater humanity. Nothing is required from us to change this world, other than displaying the kindness and compassion that already lies within us, and is available to all of us today. We live in an incredible world full of incredible people capable of incredible things. They walk by us every day. The simple challenge we face is to let out what is already there. All that separates us from our best selves is the environment we live in. When we release ourselves from the constraints of the dehumanising environment we all share, and move on to a more human set of principles, we create the conditions to release us from ourselves. There is a better world that already lies within us. Burning Man has the power to show each and every one of us the way to letting that out. For me, Burning Man is the best place to live on earth for one week. Humanity’s grand challenge is to replicate the ‘extraordinary ordinary’ in Guernsey, all of the time. What a world that would be! Big hugs. Marc

GALLERY GROOMING GUIDE
9818-800Y Stainless Steel Grooming Station. Yes, it’s a ‘station’
This month Gallery’s had a bit of a brush-up and a shave. We’re looking at beards, the essential grooming gadgets and, yes, something for the weekend as well. Welcome to the modern man’s guide to grooming. words | Nichole Sweetsur
Beards are back More and more men are opting out of shaving. They’re sporting a beard, bushy or well-trimmed, and eschewing smooth cheeks and moisturised skin for a more macho look. Male celebs from Jake Gyllenhaal to Hugh Jackman and George Clooney have cemented the trend and the beard is definitely on the up this Autumn. But if you want to look less Grizzly Adams and more groomed you’ll need to invest in a few well-chosen products. Firstly, you need to keep that beard clean and free of bits of stray food. Step two is to moisturise the beard and the skin underneath so it looks luxuriant and healthy and, thirdly, remember the beard will need a regular trim. OK, so you don’t need a specific beard wash; a regular facial wash that is moisturising and not too harsh will do the job. But if you really want to get on board with your beard try the Billy Jealousy Beard Wash (£16.00. LookFantastic.com) (right). This is sulphatefree so it won’t irritate or dry the skin – hence no flaky skin, the beard equivalent of
68
dandruff. Bulldog Sensitive Face Wash (£4.49. Boots) is also free of sulphates and easier on the wallet. Next up, beard oil. Yes, you do need this. Apply a small amount after washing, every day. This little bit of oil is going to soothe the skin
and make your beard feel soft, which will score more points from your partner. Dr K’s Beard Tonic is a winner (£14.99. Amazon). It’s got apricot kernel and jojoba seed oils and some other essential oils that will leave a fresh, clean scent behind. Nothing too overpowering, I promise. Keeping the beard nice and tidy requires an electric beard trimmer, which makes it easy to get an even gradient of growth down to the Adam’s apple. The Wahl Lithium Ion 9818-800Y Stainless Steel Grooming Station (£59.99. Boots) (top) is, as the name suggests, no mere beard trimmer. It would be a good buy if you also shave your head and has an impressive four-hour battery life. A more basic model, the Boots Grooming Solutions Stubble Control, is only £14.99 and is a good entry-level gadget for the newly bearded.

Hair today…gone tomorrow Not sure what to do with the barnet this season?
Tania Trustum from The White Room assures me that men’s hair trends haven’t changed too much over the last few seasons and classic cuts continue to be fashionable. Lynne Kendal-Falla of Bijoux Boutique suggests finishing your style with the Fudge Matte Hed firm-hold texture paste: ‘It creates a dry, matte style in all types of hair and if you work it evenly through dry hair it gives a ‘lived-in’ look.’ Or, take your classic cut and make like the quintessential English gent with a 1950s-inspired razor-sharp parting and slicked back, glossy finish. Essential products include Toni & Guy Men Styling Pomade (£6.99. Toni & Guy) or American Crew Pomade (£13.45. AllBeauty) for a modern take on an old-school styling essential. If you’re feeling a bit more daring, then Tania says 1990s-inspired looks that are exaggerated - extremely short and tight sides with disconnected fringes, or longer lengths throughout the top are also worth experimenting with. ‘The fringe is going to take the lead running into autumn/winter this year - whether you’re wearing your hair with a parting or pushed back.’ Lynne agrees, she suggests gents look to Superman, Henry Cavill. ‘He has great hair and sure knows how to wear a fringe during the day and night, whether it’s swept back or falling to the side.’ Hair loss, or ‘male pattern baldness’, affects over half the male population and 25% of men start to experience some hair loss by the age of 20. There are a lot of lotions and potions on the market promising results and slowing down hair loss is now viable. If, like Wayne Rooney, you want a more comprehensive result you’ll need to consider a treatment like FUE or the Direct Hair Implantation Technique, which is now available at Aesthetic Skin Clinic in Guernsey. WATCH YOUR MOUTH Words | Nichole Sweetsur
S
mile and the world smiles back. For a lot of people, this isn’t as simple as it sounds. Smiling with confidence needs a mouth of healthy teeth and men don’t always prioritise their health. ‘There are no real differences in men and women’s teeth but I see more men than women coming in for an emergency appointment, which says a lot about their approach to preventative health measures,’ says Dr Nav Khaira of Rue Maze Dental Practice.
GET GUM SMART
Regular check-ups lead to fewer complicated treatments and mean that your dentist can keep an eye on your gum health. Known as ‘the most common disease in the world’, 83% of all adults show signs of gum disease. If left unchecked it will lead to tooth loss and there are links with other issues such as heart health. ‘It’s a silent disease,’ states Dr Khaira. ‘Bleeding gums are the first sign of the problem, however by the time you see blood some damage will have already been done.’ Having regular check-ups means the problem can be spotted and managed with the right treatment at the dentist and also at home. Remember, smoking makes you more vulnerable to gum disease, so it’s another good reason to give up the habit.
ERASE THE YEARS
Men who have lost their smile confidence and who are starting to look a little ‘more mature’ might want to consider the antiageing effects of improving their teeth. ‘As we age our teeth move and can start to look a little crooked and they tend to become discoloured.’ Brightening up your smile is a subtle way of taking off the years. Dr Khaira has moved on from using a lot of veneers to a more restrained and understated approach. ‘I’ve created what I call the ABB system. I align teeth; bleach them with an at-home system and use bonding to even up the height of teeth. The result is an improved smile without needing to be very invasive or expensive.’ The techie bit is the Inman Aligner, which is a removable brace that uses opposing forces to gently but quickly straighten front teeth. It works within 6 – 18 weeks and is ideal for people who don’t want to wear full braces or wear them 24 hours a day. Dr Khaira also favours at-home whitening treatments. ‘I like the effect you get with the tray system you use at home and it’s good for people with sensitive teeth.’
GADGETS
Technology-wise the buzz phrase in dentistry right now is ‘acid neutralising.’ Colgate has recently introduced a new toothpaste with this technology and claims it’s been in development for eight years. The formula contains Arginine – an essential amino acid found in saliva that could stop and even reverse early tooth decay.
Over in the Oral-B camp, their new electric toothbrush – the Pro 6500 Black Smart Series with Bluetooth technology - links with your phone to time your brush and has pressure sensors to give feedback on how hard you are pressing. It’s over £200 and can be ordered from Rue Maze.
PROTECT YOUR ASSETS
Anyone who plays a contact sport like rugby or hockey must have a gum shield and whilst off-the-shelf models are well priced they don’t offer the level of protection a custom-made shield will give. ‘For a gum shield to do its job it should touch all teeth and the bone above equally,’ explains Dr Khaira. As the dentist who fits and supplies Guernsey’s rugby team with their gum shields, he knows what he’s talking about. To custom-fit a gum shield Dr Khaira will make an impression, have the shield made to order and carefully check the fitting. Luminous pink, white, striped and ultrabright colours are in demand. Not so much to make a style statement on the pitch, but more for practical reasons. ‘Once I explained that they’re easier to spot on the grass, the whole team has gone for something bright,’ laughs Dr Khaira. Whatever the colour, a custom-fit gum shield is the best option and worth the investment. ‘They are not as expensive as you’d think and whilst kids do outgrow them quickly, the ones you buy in sports shops rarely mould to the mouth very well.’ www.rmd.gg

FOOD REVIEW
THE BOAT THAT ROCKS The Boathouse is one of those very special places that has become a frequent delight for many islanders. It’s situated on the Victoria Pier and is a fine example of excellent service, management and food so good that you’ll likely to go back time and time again. First thing to note is the atmosphere. It is a place I frequently visit early in the morning to enjoy coffee and even then, bottoms are on seats, usually sitting outside under the front canopy or on the rear decking space. The marine chic aesthetic of The Boathouse is warm and wholly relaxing, as is the service and manner of the staff that work there. The restaurant offers a wide selection of menu choices, from cooked breakfasts, smoked salmon and gallettes (served 9am – 1130am) to a range of fresh sandwich plates and mains (the mountainous Guernsey beef
72
burger in a brioche bun looked incredible), available all afternoon that are guaranteed to stifle that office hunger. An evening menu of fresh fish, steaks and picking plates is served until 9.30pm with a fine selection of wine to compliment. We dined in the large decked area at the rear of the restaurant, which has its own charming ambiance. We were shown to our table and orders were taken with genuine gusto. My guest began his meal with a starter of white tomato soup, pesto cream and a single serving of neat garlic bread. It was seasoned perfectly and it was claimed that the opening dish was the best starter soup he had ever tasted. My option was a goats cheese mousse with slices of roasted beetroot, gently caramelized to give that sweet flavour with the slightest chew to the consistency, and a lemon and black pepper dressing. A light and slightly sweet starter option that I thoroughly enjoyed. The flavours were balanced and portion
size was perfect for the beginning of our three courses. The presentation was reminiscent of Michelin starred restaurants I have frequented in the past. Without exaggerating, even the soup was presented with its sliver of neat garlic bread, like a work of art. Our main choices were even more spectacular. A vegetarian tartiflétte – a mixture of potato pieces, onion and reblochon cheese in a creamy sauce, topped with Breadcrumbs and a poached egg. The tartiflétte sat on top of a thin but firm, sweet onion and cheese base that complimented the textures of the dish and was a thing of absolute beauty, in looks and taste. A dinosaur sized T-bone steak arrived for my guest. The cut was so big it drew immediate attention from nearby diners who stopped the closest member of staff to request the same dish. It arrived with an assortment of sauces but their peppercorn creation was the overall favourite. It was sweet with a gentle

Beererfest It’s coming...that time of year where it’s justifiable to eat out every day of the week if you like. Tennerfest is upon us and it’s spawned something new. This year you’ll be able to drink it. Yes, Tennerfest now has its own beer.
spice and perfect for dipping the side order of golden brown chunky chips. Delicious!
Tennerfest is now in its 17th year. Originally conceived as promotion to boost Tourism during the traditionally quieter month of October,Tennerfest has developed into much more. It’s enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. Participating restaurants collectively serving upwards of a quarter of a million covers during the event! Inflation has obviously eaten into (Sic) the £10 and the tenner of years ago has an actual value now in excess of £15. The event still has menus starting at £10 but, with the additionof menus priced in £12.50, £15 £17.50 and £20 categories. All menus represent fantastic value for money and new this year is a Gourmet category which has no price restriction. The ‘asmuchasyoulikerfest’? The organisers tell us that demand from restaurants to take part each year is still high demonstrating that the appetite for the event continues to go from strength to strength.Highlighting the diversity and choice of food available in the islands, there are Cafés, Bistros, Gastropubs, Seafood Restaurants, Italian, Indian and Chinese restaurants as well as the more traditional hotel restaurants.
Grilled tomato and mushrooms accompanied the steak; even these minor garnishes looked like they had been lovingly prepared as separate dishes. Presentation of our plates was exceptional yet again, so much so that another group of envious Boathouse guests were keen to comment on the striking appearance.
This year sees a brand new website and look for the event and the launch of our very own locallybrewed, limited edition bottled “Tennerfest Craft Beer” which has been specifically created byLiberation Brewery to complement all types of food.
As my eyes drifted from table to table I soon realised that every diner was treated to the same high standards of food delivery and presentation. The great thing about the Boathouse is that even if you’re indulging in their lunchtime sandwich snack selection (instead of a large meal) the dishes resemble something totally special before the tasting has even begun. Plenty of polite staff with noticeable customer and floor awareness ensures waiting times for food and drinks are practically non-existent, which adds to the entire experience. At this point we were concerned about space and not wanting to admit to our gluttony, moved on to the dessert menu, choosing a Banoffee Cheesecake with Coconut custard (a beautifully sweet finish) and an infamous Boathouse white coffee which I believe is the best tasting cup you can get on the island. It’s reassuring that this fabulous food spot is the first port of call for many of the visitors coming on to land for the first time. The nature of the service and the effort that goes into the food (and the great wine selection) sets a high standard and is sure to impress all. Special evening menus and large bookings are welcomed. To book a table at the Boathouse Restaurant call 01481 700061 or just turn up. If you decide to take a chance and not book, get in early as it fills up fast! You have been warned!
Ged Kelly, Director at Hamilton Brooke, the ad agency that created the promotion says:“We are looking forward to another great Tennerfest this year, we love our new branding and enhanced website and are particularly excited about launching our own limited edition bottled Tennerfest Craft Beer. ...this yearwill see almost 190 fantastic menus to tuck into! All Tennerfest menus can also be viewed online at www.tennerfest.com

here fertility is concerned we tend to focus on female reproductive health. However, we all know it takes two to tango; therefore male health and conception should also be addressed.
A
fter all, statistics suggest that at least one third of fertility problems lie with the male partner. Whilst male fertility is not considered ‘pub chat’, the increasing incidence of problems conceiving (1 in 7 couples in Britain) makes it a highly relevant topic. This is where Nutritional Therapy can make a difference, by changing a few simple diet and lifestyle factors you can greatly boost your fertility, potentially reducing medical bills and not to mention stress. Read on to discover how certain nutrients can act as natural Viagra, or which foods may boost your sperm count, further still how foods can physically resemble the body parts they benefit!
74
To begin it’s important to consider factors that may be adversely affecting fertility:
quality. Sources include pesticides, plastics, tap water and non-organic dairy products.
ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE – both are mutagenic and can damage sperm. They also block zinc absorption, which is critical for male fertility since zinc is more highly concentrated in sperm then any other tissue.
RECOMMENDATION – switch to filtered water and opt for local and organic fruit, vegetables and dairy. Local produce will also optimise your intake of essential fertility nutrients, which are often lost during long transportation periods.
RECOMMENDATION – cut down on alcohol and coffee, preferably avoiding both whilst trying to conceive, since as little as 1 coffee a day can decrease fertility. Check your zinc levels through a simple test, available from Lamberts Healthcare (www. lambertshealthcare.co.uk) and increase foods rich in zinc like turkey, shellfish and pumpkin seeds.
HIGH STRESS – during times of stress we
EXPOSURE TO XENO-OESTROGENS – these are compounds that do not belong in our body and mimic the action of oestrogen, negatively affecting sperm count and
produce the hormone cortisol, which helps us meet the demands placed upon us, however unfortunately this is at the expense of testosterone production. RECOMMENDATION – try to identify
stressors and find ways to manage them. Take 30 minutes out of your day to unwind and relax, helping control cortisol levels, allowing for that all important testosterone production!

Now to consider specific nutrients that enhance fertility and the foods they are found in: VITAMIN C - potent antioxidant that protects sperm against damage. High levels are found in berries, kiwi fruit, citrus, tomatoes and dark green leafy vegetables.
LYCOPENE - another antioxidant, low levels of which have been observed in men with fertility problems. Lycopene is found in red fruit and vegetables, particularly tomatoes cooked with olive oil to enhance its absorption. SELENIUM - an essential mineral that helps the maturation of sperm. Sources include Brazil nuts, garlic, mushrooms and asparagus.
Finally they say ‘you are what you eat’, so up your intake of these fertility shaped foods: FIGS - they grow in pairs and are packed full of seeds, and happen to contain nutrients that enhance sperm mobility and increase sperm count. COURGETTES, cucumber & bananas - packed full of potassium and vitamin B6, nutrients that strengthen muscles, including men’s genitalia! OYSTERS AND CLAMS - rich in folic acid and zinc both vital for semen quality.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
ARGININE - a building block of protein, which increases testosterone and considered a natural Viagra! Arginine is found in pork, poultry, dairy produce, chickpeas, walnuts, spirulina and quinoa.
Beyond dietary sources of these nutrients clients often ask whether they should consider taking supplements. Unfortunately, there is no straightforward answer and nutritional status should be assessed individually. However, research indicates that few of us have the right levels of many nutrients due to modern day living, poor soil quality, processed foods, pollution and stress. For anyone trying to conceive, I recommend a targeted multivitamin and mineral for that extra boost! To find out more about nutrition and fertility, or how nutrition may help with other health concerns then search Claire Mahy Nutrition Guernsey to find her Facebook page.

WORDS BY ALEX WARLOW
MEAT THE CUTS
t’s strange to think that one day a hungry homo erectus looked at a cow minding its own business and decided it looked like it might be tasty on the inside, but thank God they did. We as humans have never looked back, the steak has its own day of national appreciation as many know, on March 14th. It has become a moniker of good taste and man’s mastery over the animal kingdom. Fad diets come and go over the years, but the general consensus is “meat good”, it’s massively high in protein and vitamins that can’t be found in any other food source like carnosine.
76
Beyond that though, the prime cut - the steak has become synonymous with indulgence and masculinity. You could have a scrap outside the takeaway with your biggest foe, but the way to solve it like men is to sit down with a 12 oz sirloin and see who’s first to throw the fork in. The most recent winner of a Texan steak eating challenge was a Ms Molly Schuyler, who in May this year ate two 72 oz in under twenty minutes. If unlike Molly you want your meal to at least touch the sides, it’s good to be armed with some knowledge of the beast you’re about to devour.

Ribeye
Sirloin
Fillet
Rump
T-Bone
The ribeye is cut to about an inch thickness and is characterised by its marbled appearance due to the distribution of fat around the flesh. Fat might not be your friend if you’re still working on that beach body, but if you’re more about the flavour the fat’s where its at.
The sirloin can be found nestled between the fillet and rib and it’s a case of the leaner the better, so one for the more health conscious carnivore. Of course you can always make up for your good behaviour with a rich sauce and sides which compliment the meaty flavour perfectly.
The fillet is the leanest and traditionally the most sought after cut for connoisseurs. The low fat content can mean a less robust flavour so the supplier is important. To end up with a quality fillet on your plate, you have to start by looking at the conditions in which the cow is bred.
A rump steak man has a real appreciation for the backside, arguably the most flavoursome cut and also one of the least expensive. A trade secret in many ways, the rump has been overlooked in recent years, but its certainly not one to turn your nose up at.
Because it’s found at the thicker end of the spine, there’s significantly more bone in a T-bone, it’s your classic cartoon depiction of a steak. It’s essentially a ‘double steak’ - part sirloin part fillet. If you want the ultimate caveman experience in the comfort of a restaurant setting, this is your best bet.
WHERE
TO GO
IN
GUERNSEY
In just a year The Hook has gained a reputation as a steak restaurant despite its original focus being on bringing sushi to local diner’s plates. Proprietor Sam Jarrold is about to introduce meat from suppliers Piper’s Farm in Devon. The Hook offer ever changing specials with the prime cuts as well as a Chateaubriand for two.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
It’s often considered that the rarer you take your steak the more refined you are. Some chefs have been known to refuse to cook steak at the other end of the spectrum ‘well done’. The less the steak is on the heat the rarer, redder and bloodier the steak will be. The French are famed for taking it one step further and serving steak ‘bleu’. Of course you can also go for a steak tartare dish where no heat is applied at all: it’d just diced, raw steak. If you’re cooking steak at home, make the ‘ok’ sign with your thumb and forefinger. Press the flesh just under
The restaurant has a trendy following and is well known for its calibre of highly finished plates of food. Their most famous steak is the porterhouse, similar to the T-bones, it’s a double steak known as the ‘lover’s steak’ - part sirloin part fillet for him and her. They also offer unusual side dishes such as lobster mac and cheese and creamed chilli and coriander sweet corn.
your thumb with your other hand, this is what a rare steak should feel like. As you swap the forefinger for the next finger along the tense in your muscles will mirror how medium rare, medium and well done steaks should feel to touch after cooking. Dave Matheson says: “We don't advise any of the larger cuts with more marbling to be cooked rare or blue as you want to make sure the fat is cooked and all the flavour is in the meat. Fillet due to its leanness can be cooked less.”
One of the most recent steak restaurants to open up in Guernsey, the Tower Hill eatery is known for providing rustic, the on-the-bone steaks. They are also one of the only main steak restaurants on the island who are able to boast the use of local produce with their steaks being sourced predominantly from Meadow Court Farm.

TECHNOLOGY
THE GREAT TIME SAVER?
words | Tony Brassell
One of the most fundamental messages we always give to new businesses is to use modern technology as much as possible to save time. There is a belief amongst many that starting your own business will free up time and life will be easy. Nothing can be further from the truth.

ll of a sudden you are responsible for your accounts, contracts of employment, tax returns, invoice creation, quotations, health and safety, compliance, transport, stock control, company returns if you are a limited company and of course doing your job! What used to be a 9 to 5 existence when you worked for someone else is now a lifetime of work, every waking minute of every day, if you want your new business to be a success. So how do you get your time back. The answer is to use technology. I was at the recent B2B Event at Beau Sejour and watched a great demonstration of time saving technology in the field of accounting. This was a system that could generate invoices, keep your books, provide instant banking information and give you access to your accounts through any device, phone or tablet. That automates the banking, invoicing and bookkeeping for you and if you have an accountant, that system also gives him access to your books so he can monitor how your business is progressing, in real time. Answering the phone can also be a bind when you are a one man band so some form of answering service or virtual PA can save you a lot of time and avoid you missing important business opportunities.

Using a client management system (CMS) can give you access to all your client records and enable you to communicate with all them by email in one go. You will be able to send out an email with details of a special offer or new product in a matter of minutes. Promotion can also be carried out by using Social Media to the extent that for some businesses, websites have become a thing of the past. We know businesses that solely use Facebook as their means of communicating with their customers, providing them with offers, product details and news, all bang up to date. Again all possible with just a few minutes of effort every week. Add to these basics things like file sharing in the cloud, collaboration through Skype, providing expert clinics on Youtube and telling people about your expertise in Linkedin and you have the recipe for business success.

“ ”COMMUNICATION IN A DIGITAL AGE I think the biggest change in communication is silence. With one click you can purchase, connect and communicate without noise.
Words | Simon Torode, Founding Director, Livingroom Estate Agents
C
ommunication in business has undoubtedly has seen enormous changes in the past decade. Businesses are now built around their communicative possibilities and every evolution is seen as a further opportunity to create revenue and better quality of service to clients. Internet wizards and PR agencies with digital clout are now intrinsic to company growth.
Smart phones and tablets are an extension of our personalities - storing our chosen apps that reflect our lifestyle choices that fundamentally describe us as people. So much information is accessible and all captured in the hand.
I think the biggest change in communication is silence. With one click you can purchase, connect and communicate without noise. I was born in the 70’s and have lived through vibrant noisy offices that are slowly being silenced, becoming computer-focused with perhaps too little verbal communication to clients. In my industry, verbal communication will never wain. It is key. I do, however, believe in online technology and, in 2012, along with my partner, Richard Hardie, invented TVM (Transparent Vendor Management TM) which offers our clients the ability to log in, review their sales process and interact with us with complete confidentiality - perhaps the easiest way when surrounded by colleagues in an office environment. TVM also works brilliantly with multi-ownership or for those who are unable to communicate between themselves in difficult divorce and dispute situations.
In addition to the obvious choices of companies, such as Amazon, that offer global dominance in this field, a perfect example of an online company with superb customer service skills is Made.com. Made was created to showcase furniture designers and their works to the world. By firstly offering attractive functionality on their website through to keeping their customers posted at every stage of their delivery through real time order tracking. The follow up aftercare is also exceptional. All of the stages of sale sit on the web. Achieving a feeling of personal response, rather than automated, is a difficult job but Made manage to achieve this effortlessly. For me, a successful online company is one that can balance being human with productivity – even if the human element is slightly contrived but carefully considered. In June 2014, we launched a competition called I am Guernsey. We wanted the competition to have a distinctly digital focus – partly because of the environmental impact of paper wastage but also because it allows us to use social platforms to engage islanders in interactive conversation with us and each other online. We believe that this is the future of efficient communication in Guernsey and that it is our responsibility to lead by example. Social media has changed and is no longer just the domain for the younger generation. We are seeing more and more people of every age using it to communicate. Facebook has recorded that their growth has been made possible by the engagement of internet users aged 45 years and older. By the end of 2013, Facebook boasted 1.23 billion monthly users, adding 170 million in just one year. One in five Twitter users are over the age of 50. In 2013, Twitter grew by nearly 80% with users aged between 55 and 64. I am fascinated by communication in a digital age. There’s so much to learn and, even if today’s technology is obsolete, tomorrow will herald the next big thing and the one after that will always be just around the corner.

4G AND YOU
Words | Peter Zunino Airtel-Vodafone’s Head of Marketing
D
o you remember life before email? For businesses that had previously only used fax and phone, email brought huge change; 4G is going to be as big a jump in technology. It’s going to make work smoother, faster and more efficient. Our global partners Airtel and Vodafone have seen changes as significant as the coming of email when 4G (also known as Long Term Evolution – LTE) has been launched in other jurisdictions. LTE technology is advancing in two ways: first, the wireless spectrum is being used much more efficiently, so that more data can be carried over less bandwidth (4G isn’t about better mobile telephones, but rather a faster and clearer transfer of data). Second, because 4G is more efficient, the way in which mobile technology is used will change. EFFICIENT USE OF WIRELESS SPECTRUM The Channel Islands’ bandwidth for 4G has been allocated and the operators are busy planning and implementing the infrastructure. 4G will mean greater efficiency of data transfer and much faster data speeds. By next year, when our 4G network is installed, the question will be how will businesses change given greater access to faster speeds. USING 4G TECHNOLOGY 4G will make everything work better. Small firms will be able to conduct their entire business without the need for a central office. All documents can be stored on a cloud and – no matter how large – can be downloaded so much faster than is currently available. You will be able to have virtual meetings with clients or colleagues on the other side of the world while sat in your garden. The sound and picture will be vastly improved – there will be none of the buffering of 3G, and you will be able to share files, videos and anything else in real time without any delay or problem. Communication and knowledge will be much faster. So what can businesses prepare for this new way of working? First, don’t get tied in to any long term technology contracts. The days of the landline are numbered particularly for small businesses – so don’t sign up to anything that involves one. Now that the three incumbent operators each have a 4G licence, you are going to see strong competition in the market. However, there is a caveat. Competition will only be successful if businesses respond to it: if you are dissatisfied with your operator, then change. To be dissatisfied without changing not only means that the operator that has your business can get away with trying less hard to keep you. It also means that competing operators will wonder how much more competitive they have to be to win your custom. So be flexible. You have a choice of three – use them.

WHAT 4G MEANS FOR BUSINESS Words | Dave Newbold Chief Operations and Technical Officer, JT
I
n a world of baffling technology and confusing technical language, 4G is a development that can be summed up very simply: it’s all about the speed. 4G means that mobile data connections will be around 100% faster, so when using your mobile device away from a Wi-Fi network – and it’s important to stress that this is as relevant to tablets as it is to phones – you’ll get far faster connections and much quicker loading times. Speed is essential for conducting business from wherever you are, but the improvements don’t stop there. As the new network will be more robust and better able to handle periods of peak use, it is this reliable experience that will really appeal to businesses. 4G will deliver better quality streaming on video-calling apps such as Facetime or Skype, and for those using Cloud based services such as file sharing or remote applications, 4G also means easier and better service. JT has committed to investing £12 million into delivering a stateof-the-art 4G network across the Channel Islands through a fiveyear partnership deal with a world-class provider to deploy not just the standard 4G network, but a new LTE Advanced network that is effectively a generation ahead. This means we’ll all benefit not only from a brand new system that is up-to-date, but more importantly, one that is expandable and can be regularly upgraded to ensure we can take advantages of new developments as they arise. This is great news for any business wishing to really explore the wide reaching advantages that 4G can offer now and in the future. Mobile data speeds in the Channel Islands are already ahead of UK averages, but the new network is going to widen that gap even further – given that 4G take-up in the UK has been quicker than any other technology, we’re confident that the increasingly tech-savvy Channel Island users will be keen to embrace it. But, the point is that for a device capable of picking up both 4G and Wi-Fi, your connection should be seamless, wherever you are. This is because together, both our 4G network and our Gigabit fibre programmes – which effectively un-locks unlimited broadband speeds – will soon mean that our coverage is almost universal. In summary, 4G means that while on the move you’ll be able to work far more effectively enjoy seamless real-time video calls to keep in touch with the office and clients all over the world; safe in the knowledge that the network won’t fail you. At JT, we have consistently offered mobile data speeds that are significantly faster than the nearest rival. This is why we’re so keen to bring this opportunity to businesses as soon as it becomes available, which takes us one step closer to achieving our vision; to become the partner of choice for global telecommunications innovation.

ake note of the image above. This is a car with a presence so large it requires multiple parking spaces to accommodate a sizeable vehicular ego. Curly haired demi-racist and Top Gear Ambassador, Jeremy Clarkson, once described the Bentley Cruising Series as “a quiet and spacious sensory deprivation tank for wealthy old people.” Surely he’s not refering to this car?
The Bentley V8 Sport series is the leaner, steroid enhanced model that represents all the hard work those boys at Bentley have injected into this monster model in a bid to tempt the younger buyers back into the luxury British racer club. The grand styling is still there; its just been repackaged for younger tastes and the result is a Bentley that will make every head turn when rolling through traffic lights or to simply hear which direction the V8 S roar is coming from. Gloriously oversized wheel arches define the side profile and rear of the car whilst the intimidating yet iconic Bentley grill, sits loudly and proudly where it should be. It’s noticeably smaller than previous continental models but still packs an incredible punch. Its distinctive shape adds to the handling experience too, especially when driving through the narrow Guernsey lanes or at moderately higher speeds and corners. The seemingly compact Sport Series doesn’t play to its size when thundering along the coast or into navigating the dreaded Death Star sized ‘gulley lanes’ that should only feasibly allow for bicycles or horses. COMPACT GADGETS
MAN GADGETS Words : Patrick Cunningham
T
his month I was given the topic of ‘manstuff’. Normally I end up scouring the Internet for days looking for interesting and wacky products, however in this case I am spoilt for choice. Simply put, there is a lot of awesome manstuff out there. Read on for a dose of this online awesomeness.
Furtif Evercut Knife Every man needs a good knife and these Furtif Evercut knives do not disappoint. With drop-dead gorgeous anti-radar panels on the handle (just in case you need to use it in stealth mode) and a sinister, titanium-carbide blade that stays sharp for 25 years, this knife will have you ordering your family about like Gordon Ramsey in no time. “Tarquin, I’ve seen better chocolate soufflets come out of the f*****g cat!”
Apple iWatch
As the first new product line from Apple since the devastating loss of Mr Jobs, the Apple Watch has Apple fanboys wetting their pants in fits of manic delirium.
102
With many, many awesome features such as the ability to sense taps in addition to touches, a haptic feedback motor (meaning that it can buzz when things happen) and a built in heart rate monitor, Apple have once again redefined the boundaries of technology! Actually, no they haven’t. Samsung have had their Galaxy Gear watches on the market for ages already, so Apple is pretty late to the game. However, my belief is that the hype surrounding this launch will bring wearable computers to the masses. I’m pretty excited about the potential for wearable computing and I’ll certainly be investing in a smart-watch of some sort over the next few months.
Specialized S-Works Venge Di2 2014 Road Bike
The Specialized S-Works Venge bike is the very pinnacle of amateur cycling aspiration. Personally when I look at it, my eyes go funny, I break into a cold sweat and my knees go weak. This is the same effect that Angelina Jolie has on me. With a retail price of over £7000.00 it is certainly not cheap. You would need to be either very wealthy with an understanding wife, or slightly insane to spend this amount of money on a pushang. Apparently this bike is so light, that when you take it out of the box it actually floats upwards and shimmies about on the ceiling. This is why Specialized recommend using a leash. You would be pretty gutted if you stopped off in Torteval for a loo-break wearing nothing but lycra, only to witness your pride and joy sailing off into the distance when you emerged from the public toilets.
Weider Speedweight 120
Whisky - The Manual
As soon as men reach the age of 35yrs old they instantly develop a deep appreciation for high grade, single malt whiskey. It happens to all men, comes out of nowhere, and is generally linked with a yearning for slippers and a cravat. For men aged 34yrs old or less, the drinking of single malt whisky generally results in bouts of aggressive coughing and near death experiences. Sometimes they bleed out of their eyes. In order to satisfy these boozy urges, Dave Broom, an international whisky guru, crystallized his many years of hedonistic whisky abuse into his latest book, “Whisky, The Manual”. A quintessential part of any gentleman’s library, this book will give you gravitas amongst your friends as you debate the subtle, vanilla notes of Alberfeldy 21 and the effects of the Scottish referendum on the UK economy.
The sign of a true man is an enormous set of guns. Most women say that they prefer a good personality to big muscles, however we all know that isn’t true, don’t we guys? Big muscles mean loads of birds. This is why every man should have a decent set of dumbbells to hand at all times. They need to be very, very heavy to extract maximum gun-building capability and visual effect. The Weider Speedweight series is very clever as you can vary the weights easily, up to a staggering 120lbs. This means they look the business, but also give you the option of dropping the weights down a few notches when no one is around. You can then rapidly smash it back up to 120lbs for a couple of power reps when that fit bird on the cross-trainer glances over (if you’re using them in the gym obviously). Otherwise, you’d just be hanging around a gym with your own weights set which would be weird.

How to… STORE IMPORTANT STUFF SAFETY
A SLIM, SMART STUNNER
Smartphones appear to be growing in size as well as in popularity! But a large phone isn’t the ideal fit for everyone – Included in Sony’s latest announcement of their new Xperia range is the all new Sony Xperia E3. This slim and resilient phone sports a range of smartphone essentials, including a 5MP camera and a quick and responsive Quad-core processor as well as a stunning 4.5” display and an exceptional battery life of up to 49 hours! The Xperia E3 weighs in at 145g and just 8.5mm thick, this handset truly is slim, resilient and ready for anything. So if you’re looking for a truly compact and great value smartphone, look no further than the Sony Xperia E3 for only £99 or on JT Pay Monthly from £11.99 per month. Visit the JT Store today to take a look at our great value range of the latest Sony Xperia handsets, and find the Xperia fit for you!
Whatever you’re storing – contacts, calendar information, documents, or pictures – make sure that they’re as secure as possible. You have to consider security with treasured family photos and important documents. The cloud is great for storage, but there are two things you should do to reduce the risk of losing your data: Back up your private data on your home PC, rather than the cloud. Having your most important documents on a hard drive will mean that they are secure. If you choose cloud services, change your password so that it’s more advanced than 1234. A recent poll showed that 40% of mobile users still use 1234.
PETITE BUT POWERFUL The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is a phone that snubs the trend for ‘ever so slightly bigger’ smartphones, choosing instead to embrace the practicalities that come with a smaller handset. Whilst its competitors clamour to tell you that their screen is the largest yet, the S5 Mini prefers to remind you that there’s huge value in a phone which fits comfortably in the hand whilst you type a message. If that’s not practical enough, then the fact that the S5 Mini is water, sand and dust resistant, making it ideal for use in Jersey whether you’re on the beach or walking in the rain, should make you take notice of this petite but powerful phone. Talking about power…power is another element of the S5 Mini that makes it stand out from the crowd. The Ultra Power Saving feature minimises battery use when it’s running low by turning the screen to black & white and closing down unnecessary features, making sure you maximise the time you stay connected. Small, powerful and tough is just the start of the S5 Mini story! It comes with one-touch fingerprint security, an 8 megapixel camera and a heartbeat monitor that syncs with the S Health app and Samsung’s Gear and Gear Fit activity trackers so you can easily check your fitness data at any time of day. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini runs on Android Kitkat 4.4 and is available for free in the Sure store when you subscribe to the Smart400 plan (£36 per month).

Channel Island superstar DJ - and Airtel-Vodafone Brand Ambassador - Hannah Jacques looks at the XPeria Z3
The boys at Sony have been busy. I mean really busy. They’ve come up not only with the latest handset, but a whole range of new and wonderful other gadgets alongside. They arrived in Guernsey at the start of October, so getting to try them all out would even take too long. The main item is the Xperia Z3, which has a big 5.2-inch display, a rounded aluminium frame, and tempered glass panels. All very nice looking. It’s also slim, light, dust-proof, water-resistant (two things which are becoming the norm), and has a 20.7-megapixel camera with a 25mm wide-angle lens. It’s also damn fast (a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor kind of fast). For most companies that would be enough. But not Sony. Alongside their flagship, Sony have unveiled an updated SmartWatch; a BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Z3 Compact; an E3 smartphone; and a very very thin Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The Sony SmartWatch is now in its third generation and now competes well with the like LG and Moto, and it looks a bit like Samsung’s Gear 2 Neo. The 'Compact' version of the Z3 has a screen that’s 4.7-inch, while the lowercost Xperia E3 smartphone has a 1.2Ghz quad-core processor and 4.8-inch display. Finally, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is an extremely thin 8-inch tablet. Yes, of course they all work together and look great. From a gaming point of view, what I like about them all (the Z3, Compact and Tablet Compact) is that they can all stream and play PlayStation 4 games away from the console, using PS4 Remote Play. I’ve just got to decide which to use.

heerleading is often considered an American activity but we have a winning team here on the island. The Atlantic Angels are a senior level two cheerleading team with members from 10 -26 years old and impressively, the current National Champions after winning their division at the Bournemouth International Championships in July!
The team was formed in 2000 and has been going from strength to strength ever since, travelling to the UK every year to represent Guernsey at the National Championships. Twenty member strong, the team trains twice a week for a total of four and a half hours practicing jumps, stunts, gymnastics and dance which make up the four main elements of an allstar cheerleading routine.
104
The commitment of the athletes goes beyond the compulsory training hours, as they also practice their routines and work on strength and flexibility in their own time. The sport requires not only physical strength and stamina but flexibility and coordination, pushing the athletes to their limits for the 2 minutes 30 seconds it takes to perform their full routine. Once a year they have an American coach visit from one of the top cheerleading gyms in the world. He works with the team to learn new skills and choreograph dynamic routines for the upcoming season. The time spent with such a highly regarded coach really pushes and focuses the team to continue to improve and watching them in action is truly spectacular.
The team is a non-profit organisation and all the coaches are volunteers. Even the athletes have to pay for all their own travel, accommodation and competition fees. The team are currently looking for sponsorship or donations to help them travel to Nationals next year in order to defend their coveted National Championship title! Gymnastics is a large element of asdfsdf cheerleading as a sport and as such, the team has spent the last two seasons pushing for new skills and developing them to improve their scores at competition. They are currently looking for a sponsor for a sprung floor, which will allow them to further improve and perfect their gymnastics. For more information about the Atlantic Angels and how to get involved contact Jo Griffiths on 07911 712069 or visit the Facebook page – atlanticangelsguernsey

SPORT NEWS FALLA INGROUILLE 2014 GUERNSEY JUNIOR OPEN With nearly 40 players taking part, including 10 from Jersey and England, there was plenty of high quality squash on show at this year’s Falla Ingrouille Guernsey Junior Open, which took place at Beau Sejour. The tournament is sanctioned by England Squash & Racketball as a bronze event and always gives a chance for Guernsey’s top juniors to take on some of the best players from Jersey and UK. Top seed in the Boys U11 was Jersey’s Charlie Taylor and despite being only nine years old showed that he will be a real star in the future by comfortably making his way through his group to the final where he played Guernsey’s Marco Phillips. Phillips played really well to push Taylor but the sublime racket skills of the Jersey junior shone through as he won the final 3-0 to take the title. Guernsey’s Director of Squash Martin Watts said: “The Junior Open is a really important event for us to attract players from outside of Guernsey. We thank all the players who travelled over and to Falla Ingrouille for once again supporting this event.”

NEW 6 A SIDE FOOTBALL LEAGUE The Friends of KGV are delighted to announce that Leisure Leagues, the largest UK supplier of small-sided football is coming to the 3G pitches here in Guernsey. The leagues are due to commence on 5th November. They have over 3,000 teams playing each week in around 200 different leagues throughout the British Isles. Leisure Leagues will be kicking off a new 6 a-side football league on the all weather pitch in Guernsey on Wednesday 5th November 2014. There will be a total of 24 teams playing across multiple divisions between the times of 7-9pm and each game will last roughly half an hour. All teams that register before the big kick off will receive a free kit (shirt & shorts) for every player and free entry to the league. Medals and trophies will be presented at the end of the playing season. Grading matches will take place on the opening day to determine which division best suits each teams playing ability, and if teams require specific kick off times due to work or social commitments they will be accommodated. All team spaces will go on a first come, first served basis so don’t miss out! New teams looking to register can do so by visiting the Leisure Leagues website link which can be found on our website. CLEMENTINE WINS BRONZE AT EUROSAF! Rising Star Clementine Thompson has had a very busy year sailing all over the world. This year she has competed in Italy and Denmark, as well as taking part in the Eurosaf Youth Sailing Championships held in Gydina, Poland. Clementine placed third in the competition! Clementine sailed a highly tactical race, and took advantage of the intense competition between the German sailor in first place and the Polish sailor following in a close second. The two sailors were so busy covering each other they did not notice Clementine taking advantage of shifts and gusts to take the lead. She clung onto this lead tenaciously, finally winning the medal race. This secured her third place and the bronze medal, her first medal at a European championships and arguably her greatest achievement to date!

WORDS Grant Runyon ILLUSTRATION Luke Moss
Back in the era of communal showers and professional sportsmen who smoked on the pitch, the relationship between fitness and masculinity was quite straightforward. Real man’s men spent an hour or two fighting over a ball and swearing at each other, and then another three hours in the bar drinking approved manly drinks and eating Big D peanuts. Everybody involved was hairy, wore Old Spice and modelled themselves on either George Best or Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes. They looked great, charmed the ladies and usually dropped dead at 52 from a heart attack. These were the days when darts was considered exercise because it was technically a sport. Runners and cyclists did exist (mostly in Africa or France), but if you’d asked a man what yoga was he would have guessed it was a side dish that came with poppadoms. Pre Bruce Lee, the western world’s experience of martial arts

involved being punched in the head by an off-duty bouncer in gym shorts, and the only concept of extreme fitness understood by most blokes was those massive bodybuilders who ate thirty raw eggs for breakfast and had competitions to see who could drag a truck across Newcastle using only their wedding tackle.
Male identity is both more comfortable and more complicated than the dark ages of the 1960s, and so men’s relationship to fitness has evolved. Traditional bastions of masculinity like rugby clubs and truck testicle dragging competitions still exist, but blokes who want to cultivate the appearance of being the manliest of manly man’s men are going to need to work a little bit harder than that to stand out. If you want to project an aura of extreme masculinity you’ll need to think of something unique, especially given that you live in a safe, comfortable island that is only marginally tougher than a chihuahua wearing a leotard. You could just do regular exercise, and let the results speak for themselves, or you could adopt a fitness lifestyle and try your hardest to get noticed. If you’re leaning towards the latter, we’ve picked out some places for you to start.

MAN VERSUS NATURE
If you want to get one up on your triathlon mates, and possibly even the mud runners, make sure you tell everybody who’ll listen that you only do these vanilla events as training for an extreme marathon held in a dangerous foreign location. You might look butch running around a muddy field in Essex, but it’s even more manly to sign up to do a similar distance in the Amazon jungle, up a Peruvian mountain or in Death Valley (the clue’s in the name). By surviving these races you can present yourself as some kind of grizzled post-apocalyptic survivor who eats rattlesnakes and sleeps in a pile of rocks, which is a look guaranteed to knock the ladies off their feet. You might even think that just running is too easy, even if it does involve surviving jungles of poisonous plants, hostile natives and deadly snakes. In this case, you should consider challenging nature more directly by climbing up things (mountains, rocks, skyscrapers), ideally without ropes, oxygen or shoes. There’s also “The Running of the Bulls” in Spain, which is less about actual fitness (or even running) but makes you look manly even if you risk proving Darwin’s point by getting gored to death by a tonne of enraged chilli con carne. Manliness rating: 8/10 (Bear Grylls has run out of toilet paper)
VIOLENT FITNESS
Have you seen Fight Club one too many times? Have you never recovered from discovering that WWF wrestling isn’t real? Do you have a signed poster of Chuck Norris under your bed? If all of these are true and you aren’t currently serving time at Her Majesty’s Pleasure then perhaps you can become super-uber-mega-manly by joining a dojo, learning some real life Streetfighter combos and getting proper hench by savagely battering a sandbag for three hours a day. Even the softest of martial arts will build core strength and make you at least stand in a hard way, and anything involving sparring or arm bars will cause enough facial bruising to make Philip Schofield look like Tyler Durden after a matter of weeks. Stick at it and eventually you will be tough enough to adopt a daft nickname (Grant ‘the chinchilla’ Runyon) and step into the octagon to test yourself against a 16 stone psychopath who looks like a fairground mechanic and has tattoos on his face. The only downside to all of this is, that despite all the progress achieved under globalisation it has not become any cooler or even socially acceptable for a white man to own a pair of nunchuks.
EXTREME RUNNING
Triathlon (also known as swimming for a bit, then cycling, then running) has a long and noble history that allegedly stretches back to the ancient Greeks. However, it came into its own once cunning marketers worked out they could sell participants a special bike, special shoes and a special wetsuit in order to take part. Once you added in a special bracelet that connects to your iPhone and automatically brags about your transition times to your peer group, triathlon was ready to go big time in the world of workplace fitness oneupmanship. On the other hand, lots of women do it now, so if you want something more ostentatiously rugged you’ll need to sign up for an extreme endurance race instead. If you aren’t familiar with the likes of Tough Mudder or Nuclear Races, try and imagine a school cross country organised by the drill instructor from Full Metal Jacket, populated by anxious white collar workers in their early 30s but carried out in an environment designed to slightly inconvenience a soldier. You’ll run through mud, navigate treacherous (albeit insurance risk assessed) obstacle courses and occasionally carry heavy objects. If that doesn’t sound enough like punishment, you can also do them in the winter, at night, with no underpants on. The reward is a profile photo of you covered in slime and looking like you’re desperately holding in a rectal prolapse. Manliness rating: 7/10 (Forrest Gump carrying Lieutenant Dan)
SPORT
HASHTAG GYM CULTS
Prior to the 1990s, gyms were something most people simply used to lose weight or to get fit for other sports. The only people who visited more regularly were competitive bodybuilders, who were manly to the extent that waxing your chest and being so muscled you need help to use the toilet is manly. Today, chest waxing has spread to the general population, and it’s no longer unusual to eat protein bars whilst commenting totally objectively on another straight guy’s tight glutes and rippling, oily six pack. It’s okay to take pictures of yourself flexing your muscles, as long as you put them on Facebook with a cheesy motivational caption about giving 110%. As a lazy vegetable those certainly motivate me every time I see a friend showing off his pecs I get one step closer to getting off the couch, putting down the Doritos and buying some steroids off the internet. If you ever find your gym commitment wavering in favour of more interesting activities, then you might get better results by signing up for something like CrossFit, a.k.a. the fitness equivalent of Scientology. Yes, it works, but you lose manliness points for being obliged to constantly talk about CrossFit, tweet about CrossFit, get married to CrossFit and shun friends and family members who aren’t quite as enthusiastic about CrossFit as you are. Manliness rating: 6/10 (Dolph Lundgren in a mankini)
Manliness rating: 9/10 (Giant Haystacks has got you in a sleeper hold)
