High Expectations. Low Anxiety. The Galloway School is a community where learning is joyful, individuals are valued, and self-discovery is encouraged.

Galloway students confidently embrace challenges while developing the knowledge, skills, and cultural competence to thrive as enlightened contributors in their chosen pathways. With an average class size of 15 and a student-teacher ratio of 8:1, Galloway students are encouraged to play the game of learning— not the game of school. For over 50 years, Galloway has been a front runner in educational thought and practice. We are guided by the belief that learning should be fun and engaging; students don’t have to be stressed to be successful.

Early Learning Grades PK-4

Middle Learning Grades 5-8

Beginning with our youngest students, Early Learning is focused on nurturing intellect, prioritizing the creative process, and encouraging relationships, all within the context of a safe, daily routine. Children are given a voice in the classroom and are encouraged to develop their independent and collaborative work and study skills.

As students move into Middle Learning, they experience increased opportunities and responsibilities. Students have multiple teachers and classes, and they learn valuable time management and study skills to help them navigate this new environment.

On average, each grade level has two classrooms with three or four teachers per grade level. In addition to daily instruction in core subjects, the curriculum is enriched with specialist classes, and students enjoy a number of off-campus activities and overnight field trips.

Beginning in seventh grade, students also have more options for core and enrichment classes. They may choose from over 40 elective classes, ranging from 2D and 3D Animation to Social Change on Broadway.

Upper Learning Grades 9-12 In Upper Learning, teachers give students encouragement and freedom to pursue their passions and take responsibility for their learning and their actions. Students stretch themselves by choosing challenging and varied courses that will both prepare them for college and expand their knowledge of who they are. Students have the ability to select from 16 different AP classes, one post-AP class, and more than 110 unique courses ranging from Advanced European History and Advanced Game Production to Astronomy and Stagecraft. Teachers inspire a depth of understanding and challenge students to question and think for themselves. Students leave Galloway courageous lifelong learners and engaged citizens who are balanced in mind, body, and spirit.

The 71 members of the Class of 2020 are attending 52 different colleges and universities across the US, Canada, and Scotland!

Experiential Learning Some of the deepest learning in life happens outside of our daily routines and familiar surroundings. Galloway provides a wide variety of opportunities that expand student learning beyond the walls of the classroom with off-campus and international field trips, outdoor education leadership adventures, and service-learning experiences in the local community. All three levels of the school suspend their regular schedule for 1-2 weeks to offer students the opportunity to take a deep dive into a single topic of study. These immersive opportunities cover a wide range of topics with an emphasis on experimentation, collaboration, and creativity.

“Our students learn more than just core academic subjects; they learn about themselves, who they are, and what role they want to play in making our world a better place. –faculty member

THE HAPPENING Early Learning teachers select an overarching theme, while each class is given a sub-theme to explore over the course of a week. Past themes have included A Journey through the Decades, the Wild West, Myths and Legends, and more!

IMMERSION Middle Learning students take a week to explore themes such as compassion, belonging, sustainability, advocacy, and courage by engaging in field trips and service projects. Past trips include the Kendeda Building at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the MicroLife Institute, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, Ponce City Market, and the Atlanta Beltline.

EXCURSION Upper Learning students choose from a variety of topics to study over the course of two weeks—both domestic and internationally. Topics range from studying immigration and justice to filmmaking from script to screen. Past trips include exploring evolution in the Galapagos Islands, studying conservation and culture in Trinidad, touring Cuba, and writing the resistance in England.

Arts “Participating in the arts at Galloway encouraged me to come out of my shell. The theatre company gave me a community of friends that make each day better than the last. –Galloway student

The arts at Galloway are grounded in the educational philosophy of the school. We offer experiences in music, dance, theatre, technical theatre, and visual arts that kindle self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, and creative expression. Our gifted faculty of teaching artists highly value the creative process and believe in nurturing individual expression while creating connections across disciplines, so the arts are integrated into the curriculum at every level. We regularly celebrate student work at every level with gallery showings, concerts, and performances. Opportunities abound for Middle and Upper Learning students who wish to explore these art forms on a deeper level, and participation in performances is open to all students.

Athletics Our athletics program includes offerings from Pre-K all the way through 12th grade, and 80% of Galloway students participate in athletics. Galloway has over 20 acres of athletics complexes for our student-athletes to train and compete. Beginning in sixth grade, student-athletes can participate in a variety of competitive sports across three seasons. Our open participation philosophy welcomes every level of athlete to join one of our 40 teams across 10 sports and experience the life lessons learned through dedication to a sport.

“I love the exciting atmosphere at Galloway games, and my coach brings a lot of energy and experience to every single game and practice. My teammates help inspire me to be my best on and off the court.” –Galloway student

Community Students, teachers, parents, coaches, and staff are all vital members of our community. We all consider ourselves lifelong learners and support each other in that endeavor. We learn together. We respect each other. We celebrate each other. And we care for one another. Galloway’s community represents 65 zip codes across metro Atlanta, and families have numerous opportunities to connect with and support each other through parent education sessions, cookouts, book clubs, volunteer opportunities, and more. Our school’s founder and the Board of Trustees were careful and deliberate in making the school inclusive from its beginning in 1969. They were committed to forming a school that was economically, socially, religiously, and racially diverse. Equity and inclusion are integral parts of our mission, history, culture, and identity. Our parent organization, Families of Color United for Success (FoCUS), holds monthly meetings with school leadership and guest speakers. Students are encouraged to join clubs such as Minority Empowerment Club, Political Activism Club, Intersectional Feminist Club, Self Empowerment Club, and the Gender and Sexual Diversity Alliance. Galloway also hosts the BOLD Summit, an annual gathering of passionate educators of color who are looking to grow in their careers and make an impact on education through leadership in an independent school.

On the eight acres in the heart of Chastain Park that Galloway calls home, extraordinary learning happens each and every day. Galloway graduates are mature and confident individuals who can think critically, who recognize their role in the world, and who have the skills to succeed in life beyond our walls. When you step into our classrooms, you will sense that learning is a process, and our students are at the heart of it. Teaching and learning here at Galloway is a shared journey that is both intentional and relevant, fundamental hallmarks of a Galloway education. Teachers and students are partners in learning, and the exceptional relationships that grow as a result are key to helping students learn how to learn and to discover more about themselves and the world around them. I look forward to sharing with you the vision of our school and our commitment to delivering a transformative educational experience for each Galloway student.
